Syria-Lebanon-Iran
State Officials Trash Obama's Syria "Policy"
Hat tip to the Dallas Morning News. Several sites found in a search, but I selected the Slimes for its' well-known even-handed fairness in the support of the administration.
More than 50 State Department diplomats have signed an internal memo sharply critical of the Obama administration's policy in Syria, urging the United States to carry out military strikes against the government of President Bashar al-Assad to stop its persistent violations of a cease-fire in the country's five-year-old civil war.

The memo, a draft of which was provided to The New York Times by a State Department official, says American policy has been "overwhelmed" by the unrelenting violence in Syria. It calls for "a judicious use of stand-off and air weapons, which would undergird and drive a more focused and hard-nosed U.S.-led diplomatic process."
Sort of like bombing North Viet Nam in the 60s.
The names on the memo are almost all midlevel officials ‐ many of them career diplomats ‐ who have been involved in the administration's Syria policy over the last five years, at home or abroad.

While there are no Champ appointees widely recognized names, higher-level State Department officials are known to share their concerns. Mr. Kerry himself has pushed for more red lines stronger American action against Syria, in part to force a diplomatic solution on Mr. Assad. The president has resisted such pressure, and has been backed up by his military commanders, who have raised questions about what would happen in the event that Mr. Assad was forced from power ‐ a scenario that the draft memo does not address.
Scenario - Libya or Iraq? Maybe Somalia? Maybe Yugoslavia.

#1  I'm confused about what these people want. Do they want a war with Russia? Do they want ISIS to take over all of Syria? Do they want more Syrian refugeescolonists in Europe and America? Do they want a full on fucking ground war involving US troops in Syria?

Because those are the options. If they think they're going to get a Western style democracy in Syria they are hallucinating very badly.

Europe
Europe's migrant adventures
Vatican brings more Syrian refugees to Rome

[Ynet] Following Pope Francis' lead, the Vatican has brought a second group of Syrian refugees to Rome. The Vatican said Friday nine refugees, including three children, were accompanied by Holy See security personnel on their trip from Athens Thursday. They had been living in Kara Tepe refugee camp after arriving on the Greek island of Lesbos by sea from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
Two of the arrivals are Christians.

Austria wants to help Hungary seal off its Serbian border to migrants

[AlAhram] Austria on Friday offered to help Hungary secure its border with Serbia, which is already well-protected but where migrants colonists continue to cross in a bid to reach northern Europe.

Hungary has long been criticised by its European partners for its treatment of migrants colonists, having sealed its border with Serbia last year with razor wire and making illegal border crossing a criminal offence punishable by jail. Austria's government was one of those that criticised the measure by the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The Austrian daily Die Presse said this week that Austrian soldiers could be sent to patrol the border under the plans.

The Austrian defence ministry says around 150 migrants colonists arrive in Austria every day from Hungary -- where most of them are registered -- having travelled from Greece through Macedonia, Bulgaria and Serbia.

Currently Austria is not sending any back to Hungary following a court decision last September that prevented an Afghan family being returned because of "inhumane conditions" in Hungary.

Smugglers Switch To Poland To Avoid Fortress Europe

[Breitbart] Moving to outflank the fences and walls of Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, people smugglers are now inserting their customers into Germany from the unguarded East.

The border between Germany and Poland, now totally open thanks to the Schengen borderless internal zone is becoming increasingly busy with illegal traffic as smugglers avoid Germany’s fortified southern borders. German newspaper Die Welt reports the smugglers and their charges are hard to miss in Polish border town Slubice, where the illegals are driven up to the border and then left to walk into Germany, unstopped and unchecked.

A leaked police paper has outlined the extent of the problem, which it claims is exacerbated by a "significantly reduced" number of police assigned to patrol the frontier, with many redeployed to man immigration stations along the southern border. The report claims there were 114 illegal crossings "detected" across the Eastern border in May, in addition to an unknown quantity of migrants colonists who slipped by unnoticed.

The report lamented "the border to the East is completely open!", and that the smugglers "laughed" at the few border guards left.

The problem of invisible migration brought by the migrant crisis is one the German government is presently trying to wrestle with, as they attempt to assess just how many people are actually in the country. The latest academic estimate of the figure puts totally undocumented illegals -- those with which the German government has no contact or control over whatsoever -- as around half a million.

The invisible illegals are a particular problem for Germany’s police because they cannot find legal employment or access state benefits, and therefore rely on crime for sustenance.
More Breitbart stories in the migrant situation can be found here, including the perhaps-not-shocking news that half of Germany's Turks regard Islamic law as supreme over German law. The Daily Mail's collection of migrant, immigrant, and what native Brits have to put up with is found here, including the usual migrant rapists and the fact that the French now hate the EU even more than the Brits do.

Hacker Pleads Guilty to Giving Stolen US Military Data to ISIS
[PCMagazine] A pro-ISIS hacker this week pleaded guilty to stealing more than 1,000 military personnel files and sharing them with the terrorist group.

According to the Department of Justice, 20-year-old Ardit Ferizi (a.k.a. Th3Dir3ctorY) admitted to gaining high-level access to an unnamed US company's client list last summer. The Kosovo native provided that data to a member of ISIS, who tweeted the personal details of 1,300 US military personnel in the name of the Islamic State Hacking Division (ISHD).
The article links to a US Justice Department release, which has more details here.

Iran Air cleared to resume flights to Europe
Hurrah -- free passage to Europe for Revolutionary Guardsmen, Hizb'allah's Lions of Islam, and anyone else willing to be used for joint objectives. Brilliant choice, guys.
[IsraelTimes] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
eases restrictions against Iran Air and is allowing most of its planes to resume flights to Europe.

EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc says Thursday that a successful "technical assessment" was carried out at Iran Air in May, weeks after she visited the country.

She says the EU can now "allow most aircraft from Iran Air back into European skies."

Iran’s air safety record has been spotty, with parts nearly impossible to get for the country amid world sanctions over its nuclear program.

Israel to build underground wall around Gaza Strip
[Ynet] Yedioth Ahronoth reveals Israel's plan to build a concrete wall tens of meters deep underground and aboveground to counter the threat of Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, attack tunnels. Senior defense official: 'a confrontation with Hamas is inevitable, it must be the last one.'

Israel's defense establishment's plan to build a concrete wall tens of meters underground as well as aboveground along the Gazoo Strip border was revealed by Yedioth Ahronoth Thursday morning.

It has previously been estimated that such a project would cost tens of billions of shekels. However,
some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them...
under the new plan the construction costs are estimated to reach NIS 2.2 billion.

The wall will stretch along the 60 miles of the southern border around the Gazoo Strip, and will in fact be the third defense system of its kind Israel has built along the border.

The first 60-kilometer barrier was constructed in 1994 following the Oslo accords while the second system was built following the decision to disengage from Gazoo in 2005. Neither of the efforts, however, provided comprehensive solutions to the threat of attack tunnels.

A senior Defense Ministry official on Thursday announced at a press briefing that the next confrontation with Hamas would be the last one. The question of how this announcement is consistent with a plan to build a wall, which is essentially a defensive program, is open to interpretation.

"We have no desire to rule over Gazoo, and as long as there is no alternative government there, we have no business being there," said the bigwig. "But on the other hand we cannot conduct a constant war of attrition. Therefore the next conflict has to be the last conflict in terms of Hamas ruling the Strip. We are not looking for an adventure, but a confrontation with Hamas is inevitable. It is an ongoing and growing threat and we need to be prepared for it. "

In a parallel effort, the IDF is currently erecting a wall around sections of the border with Leb, adjecent to which a number of Israeli towns are located. Construction of the wall was decided following public proclamations by Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, to attack civilian towns and hold on to them for a day or two.

At present, there a fence already exists along the border, but the wall is intended to make an infiltration of enemy forces even more difficult.

Orlando gunman was ‘verbally abusive, aggressive’ as far back as 3rd grade
[IsraelTimes] School records show young Omar Mateen often spoke of violence and was repeatedly suspended in later years for hurting classmates
Acting out the culture of his Afghan heritage?
He received a five-day suspension on Sept. 13, 2001, two days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Classmates have said it was because he celebrated the attacks.
As early as third grade, the Florida nightclub shooter talked frequently about sex and violence and before finishing high school was suspended for a total of 48 days, including for fighting and hurting classmates, school records showed.

In the years since, other people reported having disturbing run-ins with Omar Mateen, including a bartender who said he stalked her nearly a decade ago and sent so many uncomfortable Facebook messages that she blocked him on the social network.

New suspect charged over Brussels attacks
[IsraelTimes] 30-year-old Youssef E.A accused of involvement in March 22 attacks that killed 32 people at Brussels airport and metro station.

A Belgian man has been tossed in the slammer
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
and charged in connection with the Islamic State

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
suicide kabooms that killed 32 people in Brussels in March, prosecutors said late Friday.

The 30-year-old, named as Youssef E.A, is one of several charged over the March 22 attacks that struck Brussels airport and a city metro station. The man has been charged with "participation in the activities of a terrorist group, terrorist murders and attempts to terrorist murders, as a perpetrator, co-perpetrator of accomplice", Belgium’s federal prosecutor said.

It added in a statement that several suspects linked to the bombings took part in a reconstruction Friday at an apartment in the Brussels suburb of Etterbeek. The flat is believed to have been "used as a safehouse" by the attackers and as the point of departure for the attack at Maalbeek metro station, the statement said.

Osama Krayem, a Swede of Syrian origin who has been charged over both the Brussels bombings and November’s jihadist attacks in Gay Paree, took part in the reconstruction. He is suspected of buying the bags used for the Brussels suicide kabooms. Caught on CCTV minutes before the metro bombing alongside suicide kaboomer Khalid El-Bakraoui, he decided not to go ahead with detonating his own device, according to his lawyer Vincent Lurquin.

Brothers Smail and Ibrahim Farisi, 31 and 27 years old respectively, also assisted with the reconstruction. They are suspected of renting the flat to the attackers and cleaning it a day after the bombings.

A 31-year-old man arrested in June, identified by prosecutors as "Ali E.H.A" and named by media as Ali El Haddad Asufi, has also been linked to the apartment and took part in the simulation.

Bilal El Makhoukhi, a 27-year-old Brussels resident arrested in April, also took part, although his suspected role in the Belgium attacks is not clear. He was sentenced to five years in jail in 2014 after going on trial alongside several members of Sharia4Belgium,
...the Antwerp-based Salafist organization that had campaigned to introduce Sharia law to Belgium before single-handedly making Belgium the highest per capita supplier of jihadis to Syria in Europe. There was a big trial in Antwerp in 2015, but most of those convicted were in absentia...
a group that sent jihadists to Syria. He is reported to have been injured fighting in the war-torn country.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Reports: 'Fierce Clashes' between Hizbullah, Regime Forces in Aleppo
[AnNahar] Verbal disputes between Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
and its ally the Syrian army escalated into unprecedented "fierce festivities" in the past two days in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, a media report said on Friday.

"Several fighters from both sides were killed, amid reports that groups of Hizbullah fighters were bombed by regime warplanes," the Saudi daily Asharq al-Awsat reported.

And as Syrian opposition source noted that "it is not the first time that the two allies engage in festivities," the Syrian opposition's National Coalition official Samir Nashar told the newspaper that "the fighting resulted from an exchange of sectarian insults and mutual accusations of betrayal on the battlefield."

The festivities led to "the death of an officer and seven members of the regime forces, who responded by shelling the Nubol and al-Zahraa area in the northern countryside," Nashar said, adding that the fighting also "spread to Aleppo's southern countryside, especially the al-Hader region and the areas around Khan Touman."

Another National Coalition source told Asharq al-Awsat that "the disputes between the two sides are not new."

"They are the result of Hizbullah's acting as an occupation force in addition to its prevention of regime troops ‐ who have a habit of trashing and robbing houses ‐ from approaching or entering the areas that fall under the control" of the regime and its allies, the source said.

Separately, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Friday that at least 14 Hizbullah fighters have been killed and 20 others maimed in 72 hours of festivities with the Qaeda-linked al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front, Islamist fighters and rebels in Aleppo's southern countryside.

Hizbullah's intervention in the conflict alongside regime forces has helped Damascus achieve several military victories and allowed the party to clear most of the Lebanese-Syrian border region from rebels and jihadists.

Since 2013, the Lebanese, Iran-backed party has sent thousands of combatants -- between 5,000 and 6,000, according to the expert on Hizbullah Waddah Sharara -- to help the regime fight both rebels and jihadists.

They send 2,000 fighters at a time in rotation, Sharara says.

Experts say Hizbullah has lost 1,000 to 2,000 fighters in the conflict, including senior commanders.
Update from An Nahar at 4:10 p.m. ET: Hizb'allah sez reports of clashes are lies spread by malicious lying liars just to make themselves and their mean friends feel better.

An investigation was opened into the incident and to locate the perpetrators of the attack.

Police also blocked off a main thoroughfare in the adjacent Arab neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber and set up a checkpoint "in order to allow residents to go back to conducting their ordinary daily routine while protected from life-threatening lawbreakers," a spokesperson said in a statement.

Armon Hanatziv has been the scene of several terrorist attacks since violence erupted last September, including a deadly stabbing on a public bus that left three dead. Last month, two elderly women were stabbed and moderately injured in the East Jerusalem neighborhood.

Third Brazil Minister Resigns over Corruption Scandal
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Brazil's interim president Michel Temer lost the third cabinet member of his month-old administration to a swirling scandal when his tourism minister resigned Thursday after being accused of taking bribes.

Presidency sources told AFP that tourism minister Henrique Eduardo Alves had submitted his resignation after a key witness accused him of accepting 1.5 million reals (around $445,000) diverted from state oil company Petrobras.Brazil tourism minister Henrique Eduardo Alves

Alves, a member of Temer's center-right PMDB party, joins former transparency minister Fabiano Silveira and former planning minister Romero Juca, who were both forced to resign over leaked phone recordings linked to the scandal.

Temer and Alves were among some 20 politicians named in the latest batch of allegations to emerge in the explosive scandal.

Sergio Machado, the former chief executive of Petrobras subsidiary Transpetro, said in a plea deal with prosecutors that both men asked him for money from an illegal kickbacks scheme that diverted some $2 billion from the national oil giant.

Machado said Temer asked him for about $430,000 to fund an ally's campaign for mayor of Sao Paulo, according to documents published Wednesday.

Major Ganfouda site captured, but three soldiers killed in mortar attack
Three soldiers were killed when a shell exploded at the customs storage depot in Bengahzi’s Ganfuda district last night. Seven others were wounded. All were members of 309 Brigade, from Tobruk. Two of the wounded are in critical condition, Libyan National Army (LNA) spokesman Ahmed Mismari told the Libya Herald.

According to him, the brigade had moved into the depot on Thursday evening around the breaking of the fast at sunset, inflicting heavy losses on the remaining militants, both in terms of lives and equipment. IS forces, he said, had nonetheless managed fire mortars into the advancing troops.

Mismari meanwhile again warned residents not to return to Buatni, Sidi Faraj or Hawari until they were cleared on mines. The areas were littered with them, he said, and sappers were having difficulty dealing with them partly because of the scale of the problem and partly because they lacked sufficient equipment.

Yesterday also saw helicopter strikes on militant positions in Suq Al-Hout and, in a related development, the Libyan news agency LANA reported an LNA source claiming that an air raid had injured a top militant leader whom it named as Ahmed Hassan Almsheti.

According to the source, Almsheti is wanted in connection with several assassintions in 2013 and 2014, including that of American teacher Ronnie Smith, shot dead in December 2013 while out jogging in Benghazi.

ISIS extremists execute whole family for trying to escape Manbij city
I wonder if Allah will eventually be found to have declared them all martyrs for Islam, and taken them straight up to Paradise?
URFA – Militants of the Islamic State group (ISIS) on Friday executed six civilians from one family for trying to escape the city of Manbij in northern Syria, activists reported.

ISIS jihadis arrested members of the al-Darj family while trying to flee the war-torn city of Manbij heading to Aleppo.

“They were executed by firing squad in front of hundreds of Manbij residents. There were two children among the victims,” local media activist Nasser Taljbini told ARA News.

“By executing the family in public, the ISIS radical group was trying to deliver a message to all civilians who are still residing the city of Manbij, threatening anyone who would leave to face a similar fate,” Taljbini said.

ISIS has been using civilians as human shields in the military operations in Manbij, local sources told ARA News.

This comes amid continued clashes between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and ISIS militants in the vicinity of Manbij city.

The SDF is trying to close the 98-km border pocket of Manbij that has been used by ISIS for years to move its jihadis in and out of Syria.

Kuntzman awarded the National Defense Service Medal
It's the Duffel Blog
WASHINGTON, D.C. – A journalist from the New York Daily News has been awarded the National Defense Service Medal in recognition of his honorable service during a time of crisis, a Pentagon spokesperson announced today.

The recipient will also be eligible to receive disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs within the next decade.

Gersh Kuntzman, a veteran journalist of 30 years, put down the pen to take up the sword on Wednesday, traveling from New York to Philadelphia to experience the thrill of firing a military-grade weapon similar to the one used in the Orlando terror attack.
As one wag on the net put it, he handled the "AR-15 Bazooka"...
Kuntzman’s battle-weary, critically-acclaimed memoir, “What is it like to fire an AR-15? It’s horrifying, menacing and very, very loud,” quickly gained widespread acclaim, including the notice of many active-duty service members, who lauded his steadfast heroics.

Maoist militants release video of captive police chief
[Mindanao Examiner] Maoist militants have released a video clip of a Philippine police officer they captured during a raid last month in Davao Oriental province as proof he was still alive and said the captive is being investigated for his alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.

The New People's Army militants have declared Chief Inspector Arnold Olgachen, police commander in Generoso town, to be a prisoner of war. He is currently being investigated by a kangaroo court after a packet of methamphetamine or shabu was allegedly seized from him by the insurgents.

Rebel spokesman Rigoberto Sanchz said, "POW Olgachen is currently being investigated for his involvement in the unbridled illegal drug trade in Governor Generoso town and in Davao Oriental."

In the video clip, Olgachen introduced himself as Generoso's police chief and went on to say that he is being fed and treated fairly by his captors.

He said, "I am PCI Arnold Olgachen, Chief of Police of Governor Generoso Municipal Police Station, which was attacked last May 29, 2016. I am currently a prisoner of war of the NPA. I am doing okay, they did not harm me. They treat me humanely, they provide food for me. I am hoping they will release, that is my request to them."

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has given up efforts to secure Olgachen's safe release after learning from the NPA that militants confiscated drugs from the police officer.

Duterte, who has publicly declared war on illegal drugs, said Ongachen's fate is now up to the insurgents. He said, "You have a kangaroo court. Sentence him to 20 years of hard labor. I said I'd be harsh (on illegal drugs). I'm sorry for that guy."

It's a death sentence...

Kerry concedes: Terrorism is a bigger threat than climate change
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
this week acknowledged twice that the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and the threat of terrorism around the world is a bigger threat than climate change, even though he has insisted in past years that climate is the bigger threat.

Kerry revealed his subtle change of thinking during his trip to Europe, where he twice indicated that when it comes to global threats, terrorism is first, and climate change is a very close second.

"[L]et me just say that one of the greatest challenges of our times besides the fight against extremism is to deal with the enormous battle of climate change," he said in Denmark Thursday. The phrase "besides the fight against extremism" indicates he sees terrorism as the top threat.

He made a similar comment in Norway on Wednesday, when at first seemed prepared to say climate is the bigger issue, but then conceded that terrorism ranks at the top.

After that has been processed for each victim you will know if an attack was inconvenient, serious or catastrophic for JF'nK.

GOP AGs warn Dems: if climate skeptics can be prosecuted for ‘fraud,’ so can alarmists
Punch back twice as hard.
If Democratic attorneys general can pursue climate change skeptics for fraud, then also at risk of prosecution are climate alarmists whose predictions of global doom have failed to materialize.

The “cuts both ways” argument was among those raised by 13 Republican attorneys general in a letter urging their Democratic counterparts to stop using their law enforcement power against fossil fuel companies and others that challenge the climate change catastrophe narrative.

Consider carefully the legal precedent and threat to free speech, said the state prosecutors in their letter this week, headed by Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange.

“If it is possible to minimize the risks of climate change, then the same goes for exaggeration,” said the letter. “If minimization is fraud, exaggeration is fraud.”

The letter comes as Exxon Mobil fights off subpoenas by two prosecutors — Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude E. Walker — for decades’ worth of climate-related documents and communications with academics, universities and free-market think tanks. New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and California Attorney General Kamala Harris have also reportedly launched probes.

I like the 13 AG's reasoning. It was good for a laugh and in a way, I like anything that jabs at these left wing PC tyrants who are pushing their agenda. And perhaps it is best to push legislation at the State level. However, I'd be concerned that any such prosecution would have the effect of stifling 1st Amendment rights on either side. I'd rather see an argument based on protecting the 1st Amendment rights of individuals. However, SCOTUS has shown itself to be untrustworthy to protect individual liberties.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Aid convoy reaches 37,500 in Homs
An aid convoy carrying food, medicines and other emergency supplies for 37,500 people has reached al Waer, a besieged suburb of the Syrian city of Homs, a U.N. aid agency said on Friday.

“The convoy to al Waer was completed late last night and the team has returned safely to their base,” Jens Laerke, spokesman for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said. A second convoy, to supply the rest of the estimated 75,000 people in al Waer, is planned in the next few days.

A separate convoy, to Afrin in northern Aleppo, had also gone ahead but a delivery to the Damascus suburb of Kafr Batna had not, due to “last minute logistical complications”. The U.N. hoped it would proceed in the next few days, Laerke said.

The delivery to al Waer means only two besieged areas are still out of reach since the countries backing the U.N. peace process launched a weekly “humanitarian taskforce” meeting to push for better aid access in March.

The U.N. hopes to send convoys to the last two areas – Arbin and Zamalka in outlying suburbs of Damascus – within days, U.N. humanitarian advisor Jan Egeland said on Thursday, although the U.N. and Syrian government disagree how many people are there.

Egeland said aid agencies need sustained access to civilians, rather than the familiar “stop-go” situation whereby Syria’s government switches approvals for convoys on and off and some aid convoys get only conditional or partial clearance.

He noted that not a single siege had been lifted, despite apparent progress in aid access this month.

Riad Hijab, coordinator of the opposition High Negotiations Committee, said al Waer, the only part of Homs city not under government control, was on the brink of humanitarian disaster, and blamed the U.N. for capitulating to the government’s “siege and starvation tactics”.

“Al Waer’s residents have come under enormous pressure – because of dire humanitarian conditions, bombardment and starvation imposed by the Assad regime – to agree to a local truce.

“The United Nations Damascus office has helped the regime enforce the terms of this truce”, he said in a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

A campaign group this week accused the United Nations of letting the Syrian government dictate how aid is distributed, effectively allowing it to use starvation as a weapon of war.

Bangladesh
Three killed in 'shootouts', part the third
An alleged robber
Well, technically he's now a dead alleged robber...
was killed in a “gunfight”
Even the writers in B-desh know it wasn't really a gunfight...
with police at Satighata Bazar on the Jessore-Manirampur road in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
No doubt the Lavender mod will tell me where that is...
Far northeastern Bangladesh, on the border with Myanmar.
That's on the map, same as everywhere else in the world, O pink one.
That's salmon, dammit!
And this is periwinkle, an equally old fashioned but differently purple flower.
The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Nor will it be known until some poor mother comes to the morgue looking for her wayward son...
Elias Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotwali Police Station, said on information that a gang of robbers were preparing to commit robbery on the road,
...where the pickings were better than in a banana grove...
a team of police conducted a drive there around 2:30am.
Lining them up and mowing them down...
Sensing the presence of the police, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting the police to fire back. One of the robbers was injured in the gun battle, while his associates managed to flee the scene, he added.
You'd think by now the Bangla-coppers would like, oh, throw a cordon around the road, or the banana grove, or wherever, and catch the associates? But no-o-o-o-o, it never happens, does it?
The injured robber was rushed
Hah...
to Jessore Medical College Hospital
Not a Level 1 trauma center, but that doesn't matter because...
where doctors declared him dead.
Busy night for Dr. Quincy...
Police claimed to have recovered some sharp weapons and a piece of rope from the spot.
The rope was on the spot because that's what had been used to bind the wrists of our unfortunate unknown robber just before he was caught in the crossfire...

Iraq
15 Iraqi militia die in fighting in Tuz Khurmatu
ISIS has killed 15 members of the local security forces in attacks on villages in northern Iraq, officials said on Friday.

The attack was launched late Thursday on villages west of the restive town of Tuz Khurmatu, which lies in an ethnically mixed area 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Baghdad.

The ensuing clashes killed 15 members of the police, of a Turkmen paramilitary organization and of the Kurdish peshmerga.

“Twelve people, six members of the police and six of the Hashed al-Turkmani were killed in the fighting against Daesh (ISIS),” said Abu Ridha al-Najjar, the local leader of the Turkmen group.

“The attack began in Birahmed area last night,” he said of a cluster of villages west of Tuz Khurmatu.

The Hashed al-Turkmani is a local branch of the Hashed al-Shaabi, a national umbrella organisation dominated by Tehran-backed Shiite militias.

In and around Tuz Khurmatu and other areas in Iraq’s Turkmen heartland, Shiite Turkmen fighters belonging to these militias fight under the banner of the Hashed al-Turkmani.

Mullah Karim Shakur, a local peshmerga official, said three Kurdish fighters were also killed in the fighting.

The attack was claimed by ISIS in an online statement. The jihadists still hold nearby areas, such as the town of Hawijah and parts of the Hamreen mountain range.

Tuz Khurmatu is in an area theoretically under Baghdad’s authority, but the autonomous northern region of Kurdistan has a military presence there and claims the area as its own.

The town has been the scene of deadly skirmishes between Shiite Turkmen and Kurdish forces in recent months.

Psychologist Who Tested Mateen For Security Job Did Same For Another Killer
The psychologist who administered the test that established Orlando killer Omar Mateen as mentally fit to carry concealed weapons as a private security guard did the same for another South Florida killer who worked for the same company.

Carol Nudelman, who had an office on Red Road in South Miami, administered the tests that determined Mateen was "mentally and emotionally stable," according to an application for a Class G firearms license released Wednesday by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. It’s unclear from the application whether the evaluation involved anything more than giving him a standard written test.

Nudelman years ago also had administered a psychological test to Paul David Ahern, another guard at security company G4S, then known as The Wackenhut Co. Ahern killed two people and maimed two others in 1998 at his condominium community in Kendall. He is serving a life sentence.

The week before the shootings, Ahern had been issued a temporary security officer’s license by the state. His psychological exam had been administered by Nudelman, according to a 1998 news article from the Miami Herald.

Mateen, who killed 49 people early Sunday at a gay club in Orlando, had also worked as a security guard for G4S. He held two licenses from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services: a Class D security officer license and a Class G firearms license.

EgyptAir flight data recorder recovered
The Egyptian investigation committee said the flight data recorder of the EgyptAir plane that crashed last month killing all 66 people on board was recovered early Friday from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, one day after the plane's cockpit voice recorder was also retrieved.

The announcement came two days after officials said they had found the wreckage of the Airbus A320 and had started mapping its debris on the seabed. The latest findings raise hopes that investigators will be finally able to determine the cause of the crash and whether the plane broke apart in the air, or stayed intact until it struck the water.

The EgyptAir Airbus A320 was flying to Cairo from Paris when it crashed on May 19 between the Greek island of Crete and the Egyptian coast.

The wreckage was believed to be at a depth of about 3,000 metres. Previously, search crews found only small floating pieces of debris and some human remains.

On Friday, the committee said in a statement that the vessel John Lethbridge, contracted by the Egyptian government to search for the plane wreckage, pulled the data recorder out of the sea in stages. It added that it managed to "successfully retrieve" the memory unit of the recorder which is the "most important" component. While the statement didn't elaborate on the condition of the recorder, but it implied that the memory unit had been safely recovered.

The two units, the so-called black boxes, are tucked into the plane's tail.

The committee said that the data will be downloaded and analyzed once it arrives from the port city of Alexandria, where they will be transferred from the site of the crash.

Earlier in the day an official in the committee said that the investigators had already started analyzing the cockpit voice recorder after it arrived in Cairo overnight.

Three killed in 'shootouts', part the second
An alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” between his cohorts and police at Bariura in Sarail upazila early yesterday.
Bariura? Do they have any good restaurants there?
Define good. Then define restaurant. There I think is intuitively obvious at this point.
The deceased, Jibon Miah, 30, was the son of Maharam Miah in Munshihati village in the upazila.
Poor Ma, not even mentioned at the time of sonny boy's untimely passing...
Being tipped off
Mahmoud the Weasel feathers his 403b...
that a gang of robbers were preparing to commit robbery
Because that's what robbers do, you know...
Dhaka-Sylhet highway, a team of police conducted a raid there around 2:00am,
That's why this is part 2 of our story...
claimed Rupak Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge of Sarail Police Station.
It's a good claim. You going to argue with him?
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers,
Oh, how their spidy-senses tingled!
the robbers opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate, he said, adding that Jibon died on the spot.
The big spot on the road with the blood stains, right where Rubel died earlier that night...
Jibon stood accused in nine robbery cases, police said.
So he beat the odds on robbery a few times...
A homemade gun, seven bullets and three sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, said Sub-Inspector Abdul Alim.
If only Jibon had thought to get an Armalite concession instead of making homemade guns...
Three policemen -- constables Johirul Islam, Abdul Aziz and Robiul Islam -- of Sarail Police Station were injured in the incident, police claimed.
Padding the workmans comp claims?

China-Japan-Koreas
Norks crack down on messaging app users
North Korean users of foreign messenger applications such as Kakao Talk, Line, and WeChat will be arrested on the spot on suspicion of espionage, according to a new order handed down from the authorities. Sources inside the country interpret the move as Kim Jong Un's aggressive reaction to the capability of Chinese cellphones to facilitate the import and export of information into the isolated country.

As recently reported by Daily NK, the North Korean authorities have ramped up efforts to label Chinese cellphone users as traitors and pursuing strict punishments against them. To this end, North Korean authorities doubled down on the use of signal detectors to trace illicit international calls and zero in on the location of foreign phone users.

However, the messenger apps allow users to circumvent detection by this equipment, prompting the regime to respond with new threats specifically targeting users of these communication applications.

“A measure has been enacted that orders the immediate arrest of ‘traitorous’ residents who use foreign messenger applications. The regime further threatened that those caught will not be offered clemency under any condition,” a source in Ryanggang Province told Daily NK on June 2.

“Offenders who are apprehended will be processed according to the discretion of the arresting agency-- i.e. the State Security Department or the Ministry of People’s Security. Those taken in will be charged with espionage associating with the enemy and dispatched to a political prison camp.”

According to the source, the regime first began showing interest in foreign messenger apps in May 2014. At the time, residents who continuously used Chinese cellphones were arrested, and through the course of the investigation process, the authorities discovered that information was being sent back and forth through apps such as the South Korean texting service Kakao Talk.

“At that time, the authorities decided to define such activity as espionage and handed down an order to strictly punish offenders,” he said.

The crackdown on messenger services therefore strengthened from that moment on. The South Korean service Line and the Chinese service WeChat also became targets of surveillance at that point.

“These days, Line and Kakao Talk are explicitly mentioned in lectures [routinely delivered to residents by the authorities]. That’s how serious the crackdown has become,” a separate source in Ryanggang Province said.

This, he went on to say, is unprecedented--hitherto, there had been no mention of foreign cell phone applications at official lectures. Such a proactive measure reveals Fat Boy's Kim Jong Un’s acute awareness of the adverse effects foreign information and defections pose to the stability of the regime, further highlighted by his blustery accusation that South Korea kidnapped 13 North Korean restaurant workers who recently escaped their posts in China and fled to seek asylum in the South.

ISIS holdouts continue to hold Mabij
KOBANE – The Islamic State group (ISIS) is still fighting hard to keep Manbij city in northern Syria, and so far fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have not entered the city, US Colonel Christopher Garver, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman, said about the ongoing Manbij operation.

The SDF-led Manbij Military Council last Monday announced the final phase of the Manbij campaign to capture the city and to save the civilians trapped inside the city, after capturing more than 1,000 km2s from ISIS.

According to US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, the Manbij operation “is particularly critical for helping to seal the Turkish border and cut off the flow of foreign fighters in and out of Syria — a challenge that affects all NATO member nations.”

US-led coalition spokesperson Colonel Garver said so far no Kurdish or Arab fighters have entered the city.

“Nobody on the attack has gotten into the city yet. They are around Manbij. They still have to fight their way up to the city,” Garver said.

“It’s hard to rate their [ISIS] effort one way or another. They’re still fighting hard to try to keep Manbij,” he said. “The SDF forces have encircled Manbij, closed those lines of communications running out of Manbij. So we’ve seen forces kind of flowing back into the city.”

“The fighting for Manbij has continued to be significant and at times heavy. Daesh [ISIS] continues to defend the area with machine guns, indirect fire, and IEDs,” Garver added.

The US coalition spokesperson said hundreds of ISIS fighters are still in Manbij and they’re continuing to defend the city. “There are also indications that Daesh may be holding large groups of civilians as hostages and forcefully compelling citizens into fighting for them, as we have certainly seen before.”

However, the SDF-led Manbij Military Council has been exercising great care in its application of firepower against Daesh in the city to avoid collateral damage and especially civilian casualties, the coalition said.

Colonel Garver also denied rumours that the coalition gave the SDF restrictions to stay 15 to 50 kilometers away from the Turkish border to appease Turkish concerns.

“It’s inaccurate, because the plan to reseize Manbij and clean Daesh out of that area is an SDF plan. It is not a coalition plan,” he added.

“We’re providing support, we help negotiate with the Turkish government and the other forces involved in the area. But it is not a coalition plan… it is an SDF plan,” he said. “So, if any YPG [People’s Protection Units] unit or any of the other forces that are a member of the SDF wanted to move somewhere, they would clear that through their chain of command,” he said.

Team Hillary horrified at 'Trump That Bitch' T-shirts at Trump rally
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Republican Donald Trump's supporters are coming under fire from Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign which is upset that T-shirts reading "Trump That Bitch" and Confederate flags were on display at a Tuesday North Carolina rally for the presidential candidate. In a fundraising email, the campaign said the displays proved Trump "is a toxic threat to the very values we share."

#10  Blossom - Don't forget Hamilton and Burr Wiki on them
The duel was the final skirmish of a long conflict between Democratic-Republicans and Federalists. The conflict began in 1791 when Burr won a United States Senate seat from Philip Schuyler, Hamilton's father-in-law, who would have supported Federalist policies (Hamilton was the Secretary of the Treasury at the time). When the Electoral College deadlocked in the election of 1800, Hamilton's maneuvering in the House of Representatives caused Thomas Jefferson to be named president and Burr vice-president.[2] In 1800, the Philadelphia Aurora printed extracts from a pamphlet Hamilton had earlier released to the public known as, "Letter from Alexander Hamilton, Concerning the Public Conduct and Character of John Adams, Esq. President of the United States", a document highly critical of Adams,[3] which had actually been written by Hamilton, but was intended for private circulation only. Some[who?] have stated that Burr leaked the document, but there is no clear evidence for this, nor that Hamilton held him responsible.

Hamilton’s animosity toward Burr was severe and well-documented in personal letters to his friend and compatriot James McHenry. The following quotation from one of these letters on January 4, 1801, exemplifies his bitterness:

"Nothing has given me so much chagrin as the Intelligence that the Federal party were thinking seriously of supporting Mr. Burr for president. I should consider the execution of the plan as devoting the country and signing their own death warrant. Mr. Burr will probably make stipulations, but he will laugh in his sleeve while he makes them and will break them the first moment it may serve his purpose."[4]

12 Kurds die in fighting with Iranian troops
Just a reminder that the Kurds have lots of enemies.
ERBIL – Clashes erupted in the city of Shanu in western Iran on Friday, where Kurdish rebels attacked an Iranian army base, officials sources reported.

The Peshmerga fighters of Iranian Kurdistan launched an offensive on government troops near the Hamza army base in Shanu, which led to heavy clashes.

“The Kurdish fighters hit the army base with several mortar shells, killing at least three Iranian forces and wounding a dozen more,” spokesman of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP-I) Dara Natiq told ARA News.

“The Iranian army responded to the attack by using heavy weapons, targeting the Peshmerga positions,” Natiq said.

The clashes resulted in the death and injury of 12 Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, according to the official source.

“The ongoing operations by the Peshmergas are aimed at showing the Iranian authorities our ability to infiltrate into their power centres,” Natiq told ARA News. “The tyrannical government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has left the Kurds no other choice than taking up arms and fighting for their rights.”

Meanwhile, leadership of the governmental Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRG) said in a statement on Friday evening that their forces were able to repel the offensive, describing it as a “terror attack”.

“The clashes of Hamza army base have ended, and the terrorists were forced to retreat,” IRG official spokesman Mohammed Bakbur said.

Nothing done to stop Kenya from erecting border wall with Somalia
Somali lawmaker Mohamed Omar Dalha has accused the federal government of failing to stop Kenya from building a barrier along its border which has effected life of local residents.
"Smuggling takes too much effort. That lack of goods has had a deleterious effect on local quality of life," he said.
tl;dr: "My wife is mad I can't get her new nylons no more."
Dalka who is also the deputy chairman of Somalia’s parliamentary committee for foreign affairs has stressed that the parliament has done its best to deal with the issue, and paid an assessment visit to the border. He urged the federal government of Somalia to act quickly and halt Kenya’s plan to erect illegally a separating wall inside Somali territory that denies access citizens to travel freely.
Act how, exactly?
In 2015, Kenya has started construction of a 435-mile wall along its porous border with Somalia as part of efforts to shut out Al Shabaab militants who carried out deadly attacks in its soil.

51% of U.S. Muslims want Sharia
60% of young Muslims more loyal to Islam than to U.S.

That rather explains the problem, doesn't it. In the past, immigrant groups became loyal to America. Irish, Germans, Italians, Poles, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc. Africans who were horribly mistreated by slavery and segregation were nevertheless loyal to America and fought in its wars. Now we have a new immigrant group, and their children, the young ones referenced in the subtitle, aren't loyal to America.

This will not end well. Most Americans are willing to give a downtrodden people a break, but in return they expect immigrants to become part of America.

Baltic Dry Index falls to 587, down 11 points.
The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Friday due to lower rates for capesize vessels.

The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was down 11 points, or 1.84 percent, at 587 points.

The capesize index lost 49 points, or 5.02 percent, at 927 points.
Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were down $405 to $6,533.

The panamax index was up one point, or 0.18 percent, at 546 points.
Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, increased $9 to $4,361.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index rose one point to 555 points, while the handysize index fell three points to 311 points.

Iraq
Iraqi Special Forces Retake Fallujah Government Building
[Iraq Sun] Forces soldiers recaptured a Fallujah city municipal building from Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
fighters Friday after a nearly month-long battle to reach the city's core.

Once a stronghold for IS krazed killers, Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led Arclight airstrikes, have been able to push IS out of the city center, marking a symbolic victory for the coalition forces, Iraq's federal police chief said.

"The liberation of the government compound, which is the main landmark in the city, symbolizes the restoration of the state's authority" in Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
he said.

IS captured Fallujah in 2014, but after heavy fighting over the past month, Iraqi forces have been able to retake nearly half of the city. In this latest offensive, troops entered the city around 6 a.m. and were met by very little resistance from the IS krazed killers.

"There is a mass flight of ISIS (IS) to the west that explains this lack of resistance. There are only pockets of them left and we are hunting them down," Lieutenant General Abdulwahab al-Saadi said.

According to security officials, many IS members fled the city this week in the run-up to the offensive by posing as civilians fleeing the conflict.

Protestors warned to continue mass protests and unless government takes action and ensures the release of the passengers who were kidnapped on Baghlan highway recently.

"People have gathered to raise their voice against the recent fear and chaos created by the Taliban on the main highways, Taliban kidnap civilians and innocents," protestor Fawzia Kofi said.

"Government leaders must hear the voice of the people of Afghanistan," MP Ahmad Behzad said.

"We do not want to disrupt the system and the government. We have one demand and that is to secure our security," a protestor said.

"The protest became violent. The protestors were maimed and the police adopted harsh action against them," another protestor Mastoora Arzo said.

Two protestors were maimed during the demonstration.

Afghanistan has never accepted Durand Line as border since 1893: Karzai
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The former Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
has said Afghanistan has never accepted Durand Line as border between Afghanistan and Pakistain and will never accept it in the future.

In an interview with BBC Urdu, Karzai termed the formation of Durand Line a ’result of British imperialism’ in the region.

He said Afghanistan has never accepted this border since 1893, nor will they ever accept it in future.

"When Pakistain came into being in 1947, they received it this way, so we are not blaming them but Durand Line is a blow which no Afghan can ever forget. We do not accept this border but will not fight over this issue," Karzai added.

Thousands of trapped residents took advantage of the Lion of Islams' retreat to flee, some swimming across the Euphrates River to safety.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter said it was "too early to tell" if Iraqi forces control all of the city. "There is still some fighting to be done."

Carter said the U.S. military supported the Iraqi forces with advise and air support.

Abu Sayyaf release gruesome decapitation video
[AsiaOne] The Abu Sayyaf released a gruesome video showing the beheading of Canadian hostage Robert Hall. The video starts off with two terrorists standing over Hall, who is made to kneel down before them, with the Daesh flag in the background. The 90-second video appeared to have been shot in the jungle.

During his last moments, Hall is seen wearing an orange t-shirt and black sweatpants, and his hands seemed to be tied behind his back. One of the terrorists held Hall's head while the other hand is seen holding a knife. Throughout the video, another terrorist, wearing a ski mask, stands behind Hall and recites an Arabic prayer, which lasted about 45 seconds.

Immediately after that, Hall is forced to the ground while the terrorist with the machete proceeds to hack off his head. As this is happening, Hall can be heard groaning. Hall's severed head is then held up and paraded in front of the camera while the terrorists shout Allahu Akbar several times.

It is believed that the video was taken in Jolo. Preliminary intelligence reports indicated Hall was beheaded ten minutes after a 3 p.m. deadline lapsed in the mountains outside Jolo's Patikul town.

In Manila, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte's national security adviser said Duterte's new government would "take a stronger action against lawlessness in the south".

Hermogenes Esperon said, "We cannot allow this situation to continue, this should end once and for all."

Some Notes from the Orlando Massacre

Let us first dispense with the notion that any new government activity could have prevented the attack in Florida. Despite the interlocking draconian gun laws in the US, ongoing governmental spying and intrusion into private lives, a government contractor legally got his hands on a semiautomatic rifle and ammunition to use with ill intent.

Let us also forever dispense with the notion that government activity intended to prevent massacres is a social good. We know now from the reaction of our political enemies that the government and its supporters only are interested in taking property not rightfully theirs, and lives for the dubious social good of crime prevention, and to settle political scores. We are seeing the demise of civil liberties in what is supposed to be a bastion of freedom every time a bad guy guns down more than three people in one setting.

Also, let us dispense with the idea that the press was wrong about the rifle used. I have read a lot on news outlets about how the press is so dumb they couldn't distinguish between a standard AR and the Sig Sauer weapon the Bad Guy used. But both rifles are identical in fire controls and basic operation, both use gas blowback to cycle new cartridges into the firing chamber and both can be loaded semi-automatically from a magazine.

The distinction is small, and ultimately worthless. We all can have a good guffaw at the expense of ignorant writers wielding large megaphones, but what they are doing is attempting to move public opinion -- votes -- in a direction that will even further reduce or destroy civil liberties. Not a thing funny about that, rather it is something to be challenged at every turn.

Unfortunately Gersh "OhMiGersh" Kuntzman refused to take a lesson from his mendacity.

***

According to a retired USMC gunnery sergeant I know who lives in Florida, four Orlando police officers had a chance to end the massacre before it even began, but, alas, they were terrible shots. Despite four trained police officers confronting the shooter with their own firearms, they failed to place one shot sufficient to end the crime.

***

We haven't heard much about the SWAT entrance that ended the incident, but the rumor is that some of the hostages may have been shot by the police.

***

I had heard warnings about ammunition prices spiking in the wake of the Orlando massacre. But so far, six days after the incident, ammunition prices overall are mixed. I don't expect them to rise much until just before the holidays, or if something drastic happens to the costs of the inputs.

***

A curious note from Florida, however: The number of AR pattern 5.56mm rifles available for private sale dropped by 42. Florida is a large market anyway so a tiny change in sentiment about keeping or selling one certain class of firearms will cause a spike, but usually spikes happen over a period of several weeks, not just one week. Possibly sellers are holding onto their rifles in anticipation of higher prices in the event of an AR ban or new regulations.

***

The shooter fired more than 200 rounds during the 3.5 hours he was in the night club, dropping about 100 individuals. Incredible shooting on his part. Most mass killers are lousy shots, but not the Orlando mass killer. I also keep hearing reports about people being shot six or seven times, but it could be some victims were hit with fragments, or they were hit with rounds passing through others.

Loads.

#2  Thanks badanov

I get why the AR community is pointing this out; they have been under threat and insult for a long time.

But yeah, it isn't like they are mistaking a Harley for a scooter. I wasn't familiar with the MCX, and at a glance and even after reading the attributes and dis/similarities, pretty dang similar.

And yes, the gun grabbers will wield the AR meme even if they know the difference.

Buddhist shot in front of his home in southern Thailand
[ThaiPBS] A Buddhist Thai civilian was shot and injured as he was sitting in front of his house in Pattani province Thursday evening and a police car which rushed to investigate the attack was hit by a roadside bomb explosion.

The victim, Sanan Maprasom, was later rushed to the Yaring district hospital for treatment and doctors later reported that he was safe. Police said the suspected militant, riding on the pillion of a motorcycle, opened fire at Sanan's house with an automatic rifle and sped away.

A police squad from Ratapanyang police station was rushed to the crime scene to investigate. While their armor-plated pick-up truck was approaching the area, a roadside bomb blew up, causing damage to the vehicle, but the men escaped unhurt.

Turkish Air Force bombing northern Iraq
Turkish Air Force is bombing the positions of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist group in northern Iraq, said the message from the General Staff of Turkish Armed Forces. Turkish Air Force has destroyed 14 strongholds of the terrorists, according to the message.

Earlier, Turkey's Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey will continue military operations against the PKK until the terrorist group is completely destroyed.

The conflict between Turkey and the PKK, which demands the creation of an independent Kurdish state, has continued for over 25 years and has claimed more than 40,000 lives. The UN and the European Union listed the PKK as a terrorist organization.

Six militants, four security officers killed in Dagestan
[RFE/RL] Four security officers and six militants have been killed in Dagestan. Local law enforcement officials say the casualties are the result of two separate counter-terror operations conducted on June 17.

Preliminary investigations indicate that one of the militants killed might be Gasan Abdullayev, a commander of Islamist militants wanted since 2009 for his involvement in a series of attacks against security forces. Officials say Abdullayev was also known for publicly pledging allegiance to Daesh.

Bangladesh
Three killed in 'shootouts', part the first
Three people, including the prime accused in a police official murder case, were killed in “shootouts” with law enforcers in Pabna, Brahmanbaria and Jessore yesterday.
Patience, dear reader, we'll get to all of them...
*happy sigh*
The dead are Rubel Hossain and Jibon.
Jibon who?
Identity of another deceased could not be known.
Known but to God, and likely mourned by Him alone...
Rubel, son of Idris Ali of Diar Baghoil village in Pabna's Ishwardi upazila, was the prime accused on twelve systems in the Assistant Town Sub-inspector (ATSI) Sujaul Islam Suja murder case, police said. Suja was found dead on a field near Pakshey Railway Station on October 5 last year. He was posted at the Pakshey police camp.
Whacked a Bangla cop? I'm a little surprised the RAB didn't take care of Rubel themselves...
Ishwardi Police Station's Officer-in-Charge Biman Kumar Das said law enforcers arrested Rubel from near his home around 11:00pm on Tuesday. Later, a police team along with Rubel conducted a drive to arrest his associate Ibra Hossain.
These stories just write themselves...
“When police reached Natunpara area near the Padma river
Just try finding that on a map...
around 11:30pm,
Isn't that a little early? Or was the Natunapara area booked solid? It's like with June weddings...
Rubel's associates opened fire on them,
"Cheez, it's the law! Open random, aimless fire!"
forcing the law enforcers to fire back,” he said.
"Forced" is perhaps not the right word, but perhaps the Bangla police translator didn't know the right word...
Rubel was caught in the line of fire
...between the two cops putting one behind each ear...
and died on the spot,
"Which spot?"
"THAT spot!"
while his accomplices managed to flee the scene.
As if they'd never been there in the first place...
His body was sent to Pabna Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
"Here's another one for you Dr. Quincy!"
"Great Sam, stack him in the back with the others."
Sub-Inspector Hasan Toufik and three constables were slightly injured in the incident, police claimed.
A hernia, a boo-boo, a hang-nail and a bruised ego...
One firearm and two bullets were recovered from the spot, the OC claimed.
But no shutter gun, that's reserved for the RAB. Sergeant Choudhry makes sure of that...

Number of Child Soldiers in Somalia May Top 5,000: UN
A top official with the U.N. Children’s Fund says there could be 5,000 child soldiers in Somalia as al-Shabab continues its recruiting campaigns. In an interview with VOA Somali, Susannah Price, UNICEF chief of communication, said the recruitment and use of young children as soldiers was documented, and at surprisingly high numbers.

“This is a very, very … disturbing situation,” Price said. “Indeed, there could be up to 5,000 child soldiers. We know that al-Shabab has a recruiting campaign for children sometimes involving persuasion. They may be giving money or food sometimes. The children in the [displaced persons] camps are an easy target.”

In the past, an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 children — sometimes as young as 9 — were enlisted in the Somali armed forces, according to UNICEF.

This came as the African continent on Thursday commemorated the Day of the African Child under the theme “Conflict and Crisis in Africa: Protecting All Children’s Rights.”

Somalia signed the UNICEF Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), making Somalia the 195th state to ratify the convention. The ratification means that Somali children now have legally binding rights with the CRC, providing the framework for the government to promote and protect those rights.
Boy howdy, given that Somalia signed, why do they have child soldiers? Someone seems to have slipped up here...
Price called on Somali leaders to prioritize the protection of children’s rights and the creation of a safer environment for Somali children.

“It is very important to focus on peace building and to call on all leaders to look at the children, to protect the rights of children and allow them to get the rights every other child in the world is entitled to,” she said.

The Day of the African Child focuses the spotlight on children’s rights in an effort to remind the continent’s governments that the issue needs continued attention.

Boko Haram militants kill seven police in attack in Niger: military
[REUTERS] Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
gunnies killed seven soldiers and injured others in military barracks in southeastern Niger and stole weapons, the Nigeria-based radical group said in a statement on Friday, according to SITE Intelligence Group.

Before the statement was issued, military sources had said that gunnies from Boko Haram attacked a town in Niger while a delegation of ministers were visiting, killing seven gendarmes and wounding 12 in a shootout. They said none of the ministers had been hurt.

The attack happened on Thursday in a region that hosts refugees and internally displaced people who have been forced from their homes by the Islamist bad boys, officials said.

Boko Haram said in the statement that "a detachment from the soldiers of the Caliphate carried out an attack on military barracks of the Nigerien apostate army in the town of Ghafam in the area of Diffa ... A quantity of weapons and various ammunition was taken as spoils."

Neighboring Chad has sent troops to help Niger in a planned counterattack against Boko Haram after the gunnies seized the southern Niger town of Bosso in an attack that killed 26 soldiers.

Niger's government has called on former colonial power La Belle France, which already has 3,500 troops spread across five countries in West Africa, to strengthen military operations against the Nigeria-based Boko Haram and other holy warriors.

Niger's defense minister, Hassoumi Messaoudou, told Radio La Belle France International on Friday that regional leaders needed to "rethink Boko Haram" and called on regional forces to defeat the group in Nigeria.

New York MoMA Apologizes for Dropping a Film Critical of North Korea
A glimpse into the posh art world of New York City as it relates to odious dictators...
The Museum of Modern Art has acknowledged it wrongly canceled the New York debut of “Under the Sun,” a documentary about North Korea that has been criticized by that country and Russia.

A slyly subversive look at the reclusive state by the Russian filmmaker Vitaly Mansky, the film had been scheduled to be shown at the museum’s 2016 Doc Fortnight festival on Feb. 19-29. But an email exchange provided by the film’s German producer to The New York Times shows that a festival organizer, Sally Berger, an assistant curator at MoMA, expressed concern in late January about screening the film after reading an article suggesting that any organization that did so risked retribution from North Korea.
Turns out that Ms. Berger had worked at MoMA for 30 years or so, and some of her colleagues are quite unhappy that she got the axe for "one little mistake". Then again, they're likely as liberal progressive as she is and don't understand the big deal about North Korea...
In the emails, Ms. Berger referred to a major hacking attack on Sony Pictures that the United States has described as retaliation by North Korea for a 2014 film satire of the country, “The Interview.”
