Child refugees stuck in camps in northern France are being forced to have sex with traffickers in return for the promise of passage to Britain, a UN report warns today.

Hezbollah to split Badreddine's responsibilities following his assassination
[Ynet] The Lebanese Shiite terrorist organization is making a number of changes to its inner workings, among them finding a successor for the top commander, who was killed in Syria in May.
This should prove interesting...
After one of its top commanders, Mustafa Badreddine, was killed in May, Hezbollah has decided to make a number of organizational changes. Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, which is affiliated with the Stiite terror organization, reported on Friday that Hezbollah plans to make a number of new appointments, even though its general council hasn't convened in the past two years, due to the turbulent state in the region vis-à-vis the war in Syria.

The reorganization was set to start after the conclusion of Lebanese municipal elections in May. Al-Akhbar reported that Hezbollah's Jihad Council (its parliamentary wing) had to be reorganized following the death of Badreddine, who was considered the heir of long-time Hezbollah military commander Imad Mughniyeh.

According to Al-Akhbar, Badreddine's various authorities are set to be split among several people and bodies, some in Syria and some in Leb, with Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah overseeing the move. In order to lessen the workload on Nasrallah, some of the powers of the Hezbollah Shura Council (the overall governing authority) will be expanded as well.

The organization has reportedly begun searching for someone who could replace Badreddine in Syria, as his current stand-in is not of Hezbollah's founding generation.

While Asharq Al-Awsat, an Arabic-language newspaper published in London, reported that Badreddine's replacement is Mustafa Mughniyeh, terrorist Imad Mughniyeh's eldest son, the report's validity is somewhat doubtful.

KDPI claims at least 20 Iranian soldiers killed in recent clashes in Shno
[RUDAW.NET] More festivities between Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) broke out on Thursday in a second day of violence in the Shno area of Iran.

A KDPI blurb issued on Friday, states, "A group of political cadres who were accompanied by a Peshmerga platoon went to the villages of Sergiz and Qereseqe [in Shno]. Our cadres and Peshmergas came under fire by forces of the Iranian regime. The ensuing battle in this village lasted for 10 hours and continued in several other places of the region until around 23:00 on June 16."

The KDPI accused the Iranian forces of shelling "the villages of Sergiz and Qereseqe in the most brutal way, causing civilian deaths and destruction of property."

The group did not release numbers of civilian casualties but claimed to have killed more than 20 Iranian soldiers, stating on Twitter on Friday, "We have the identity of more than 20 killed [Iranian Revolutionary Guards] soldiers & commanders."

Also on Friday, IRGC forces ambushed Peshmerga in the region of Sarokani in Piranshar. "The Peshmergas managed to break the Iranian ambush without any casualties. The battle lasted for one hour," the KDPI confirmed in a blurb on their website.

Thursday’s festivities come after similar violence on Wednesday in Shno where at least six Iranian forces were killed.

The IRGC also issued confirmation of the skirmishes in a statement published on their website. "In a clash that happened between the Iranian forces and Death Eaters in the northwest of Iran, 12 of the bad boyz were potted and we have captured weapons, ammunitions and classified documents."

The Iranians announced that three of their forces were killed and they warned they will not let anyone destabilize the security of their borders.

The KDPI’s Operational Command confirmed that an undisclosed number of its Peshmerga were killed and said it would "release the names of our martyred Peshmerga in due course."

The KDPI and its other branches ceased armed activities against Iran some years ago to seek a political solution. But leaders say they have recently moved some of their fighters into towns and the border areas.

In May of 2015 KDPI deployed its Peshmerga forces to the border between southern (Iraqi) Kurdistan and eastern (Iranian) Kurdistan.

The KDPI was founded by the president of the first Kurdish republic in Mahabad, Qazi Muhammed, in 1945. The current leader of the party is Mustafa Hijri and its headquarters are based in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Following the establishment of the Islamic republic in 1979, the KDPI and other secular political organizations opposed the republic and a war between the Kurdish movement and the Iranian regime lasted until the mid-1990s.

On the occasion of Newroz, Mustafa Hijri announced that the KDPI would send Peshmerga and political cadres to eastern Kurdistan (Iran) in order to facilitate closer interactions with the Kurdish people.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan must deny safe havens to terrorist and extremist groups: Pentagon
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Pentagon has said Pakistain should deny safe havens to the terrorist and myrmidon groups in its soil in a bid to help improve the security environment of the region.

The Department of Defense in its report to Congress "Enhancing Security and Stability in Afghanistan" stated "Pakistain must play a role in reducing the threat from terrorist and bad boy groups in the region."

The report further added that consistent mid-level military-to-military dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistain on specific issues, such as the shared threat from Islamic Sstate ‐ Khurasan, and occasional discussions at higher levels of the military and government early in the reporting period were encouraging.

"However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
sustained Pak efforts to pressure the Haqqani Network and the Taliban and to disrupt active threat

streams are necessary to help decrease violence in the region, to reduce the threat posed by these groups, and to achieve lasting progress on counterterrorism issues," the report said.

It also added that The United States continues to support the re-invigorated efforts of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group, which includes the Afghan, Pak, and Chinese governments, to set conditions for an eventual Afghan-led, Afghan-owned grinding of the peace processor with the Taliban and other bad boy groups.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
it said the prospects for a successful dialogue this reporting period were hampered and complicated by the Taliban’s April 19, 2016, HPA in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
, the Afghan government’s subsequent response imploring Pakistain to take more direct action against myrmidon groups seeking safe haven in Pakistain, and the death of Taliban leader Mullah Mansour.

"The United States continues to be clear with Pakistain about steps it should take to improve the security environment and deny safe haven to terrorist and myrmidon groups. These conversations continue to affect not only U.S. dialogue with Pakistain on security and stability in Afghanistan but also during discussion of other issues in the U.S.-Pakistain bilateral relationship such as security assistance," the report added.

This comes as the Afghan officials have long been criticizing Pakistain for failing to take actions against the groups using the Pak soil to carry out attacks in Afghanistan.

The Afghan officials believe the notorious Haqqani terrorist network and the Taliban group leaderships are based in Quetta and Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Iraq
Iraqi forces open 2nd front south of ISIS-held Mosul
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iraqi forces opened a second front on Saturday in preparation for an assault on the ISIS stronghold of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, a day after government troops declared victory over the Lions of Islam in Falluja.

Elite counter-terrorism forces and two army divisions, backed by US-led coalition air strikes, advanced from a northern refinery town towards an airfield seen as key for a move to retake Mosul, security officials said.

Mosul is Iraq’s largest northern city and ISIS’ de facto capital in the country.

Government troops cleared two villages and pressed around 20 kilometers (12 miles) along a desert route west of Baiji, the first advance past the town since its recapture in October, the security officials said.

Defense Minister Khaled al-Obaidi said the assault marked the launch of operations to push ISIS out of Qayara, about 115 km (70 miles) north of Baiji, where an airfield could serve as the staging ground for a future offensive on Mosul, a further 60 km north.

Army troops on a separate front pushing west from Makhmour for the past three months have made only halting progress on the opposite side of the Tigris river.

"The launch of operations to liberate Qayara will not give the Lions of Islam a chance to catch their breath," Obaidi said on Twitter alongside a picture of Humvee military trucks snaking down a desert road.

Iraqi forces entered the center of Falluja, an hour’s drive west of Baghdad, on Friday morning after a four-week operation that sent its tens of thousands of residents fleeing to overwhelmed displacement camps nearby.

Prime Minster Haider al-Abadi had declared victory over the Lions of Islam by evening, but police sources said on Saturday that government troops had not yet entered seven northern districts held by ISIS and were still clearing southern areas.

Iraqi troops engaged the gunnies on Baghdad Street, the main east-west route through Falluja, firing rockets at their positions and taking sniper fire and mortar rounds.

Counter-terrorism forces took control of Falluja hospital, a nest for the Lions of Islam who set fire to large parts of it before fleeing, and were clearing the eastern al-Dhubat neighborhood, a military statement said.

Live footage broadcast on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
from outside the hospital showed smoke rising from the hospital and elite commandos celebrating with an Iraqi flag.

Falluja, an historic bastion of the Sunni insurgency against US forces that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, in 2003, and the Shi'ite-led governments that followed, was seen as a launch pad for recent ISIS bombings in Baghdad.

The International Organization for Migration said on Saturday more than 81,000 people had been displaced by the fighting in Falluja, which had a population about three times that size before the ISIS seizure in early 2014.

"Needs: tents, water, supplies," the agency tweeted.

Western desert route
Militants tried to slow the troops’ advance north of Baiji with mortar attacks that killed two coppers and maimed three soldiers, said army Col. Mohammed Abdulla from Salahuddin operations command.

Two suicide boom-mobiles were taken out by air strikes before reaching their targets, though dusty weather was making it difficult to target Lions of Islam and slowing the advance, military sources said.

A front man for the US-led coalition said Apache attack helicopters had conducted operations in support of Iraqi forces in the Tigris river valley, where the advance is situated.

The government forces were advancing along a desert path west of the main highway linking Baghdad to Mosul which is lined with mines and runs through villages that have a heavy ISIS presence, said Col. Mohammed al-Assadi, an Iraqi army front man.

Senior officers in the counter-terrorism service have told Rooters the forces would not enter ISIS strongholds in the area, such as Shirqat and Hawija, to avoid getting tied down in secondary battles.

The desert route also leads the troops further away from the Makhoul mountains east of Baiji, from which ISIS has been launching mortars in and around the town for months.

Prime Minister Abadi has said Iraqi forces will retake Mosul this year but, in private, many question whether the army, which partially collapsed when ISIS overran a third of the country in June 2014, will be ready in time.

Retaking Qayara and a nearby refinery with a production capacity of 16,000 barrels per day could also pinch ISIS' finances.

India-Pakistan
The long game
[DAWN] THREE down, two to go. A second consecutive government inching, muddling its way towards completion. And a democracy that feels, once again, unsatisfactory -- stale, desultory, adrift.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way.

Transition was supposed to lead to gradual improvement, stability opening up space for structural change and a deepening of constitutionalism and democracy.

Round one was the trickiest and, with it, the lowest expectations. Get to the finish line, a full term, in whatever shape and it would be success enough.

Zardari delivered that, and pretty much just that.

Round two was supposed to bring more. Five years removed from a military government, building on a historic achievement of a full term, the pace had to pick up. It hasn’t.

It’s easy enough to see where Nawaz has screwed up. He’s got it grossly wrong on militancy -- the defining challenge of our times. On India, he seems to think hope is a strategy. And on the economy, neither jobs nor equity are a priority.

But, because of the democracy deficit, he could get all of those things wrong and still end up a success -- if he figured out how to reduce the democracy deficit.

He hasn’t. And there’s nothing to suggest he will.

Three years, three terms, four decades of politics, six of life -- only the incorrigibly optimistic can believe Nawaz will come around to reinventing himself now.

And that’s the problem: you can’t see continuity leading to the change that democracy is supposed to bring.

'We shall not take anyone in' HUNGARY tells EU it's FULL
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] Prime Minister Viktor Orban has joined forces with justice minister Laszlo Trocsanyi and the interior ministry to hold talks on Hungary’s immigration policy. European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
quotas for the number of migrants colonists each member state is expected to take in will also be discussed.

So far this year Hungary says it has registered 19,140 asylum applications and more than 14,000 migrants colonists have crossed its southern borders illegally.

Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office Janos Lazar said: "We shall not take anyone in in Hungary, we do not need immigration in Hungary."

Hungary passed a law on Monday that allows police to send illegal migrants colonists detained within 8 km (5 miles) of its southern frontier back to Serbia, drawing criticism from the UN refugee agency.

A razor-wire fence built along Hungary's southern border with Serbia and Croatia has helped to sharply reduce the number of migrants colonists from the hundreds of thousands who last year moved up from the Balkans towards northern Europe, especially Germany.

Belgium Charges Three Amid Reports of Plot to Attack Soccer Fans
[Bloomberg] Belgian authorities charged three people in connection with a suspected terror plot amid a broadcast report of a plan to attack fans gathering to watch the national soccer team.

The trio of Belgian citizens were accused of "having attempted to commit a terrorist murder and for participation in the activities of a terrorist group," Belgium’s federal prosecutor said in an e-mail Saturday.

The country’s terror alert will remain at level 3 out of 4, Belgium’s government said earlier Saturday, after security forces raided properties across the country and locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
12 people. The prosecutor didn’t confirm a report by broadcaster VTM that the holy warriors were planning to attack fans -- possibly on Saturday -- while Belgium’s soccer team played in the Euro 2016 tournament.

Counterterrorism forces across Europe have increased security during the soccer championships, particularly in La Belle France where the tournament is taking place until July 10.

Prosecutors identified those charged as Samir C., born on Jan. 13, 1989; Moustapha B., born on March 14, 1976; and Jawad B., born on March 3, 1987. The other nine people who were arrested during the overnight raids were released without charge, prosecutors said.

Prime Minister Charles Michel called for calm and said public events will go ahead with heightened security.

"The security services have obviously been extremely vigilant," Michel told news hounds in Brussels after an emergency meeting with Cabinet members and counterterror chiefs. "We will continue our fight against extremism, against radicalism, against terrorism."

In total, police questioned 40 people during raids on Friday night and Saturday morning. No arms or explosives were found, the prosecutor said.

Belgium has been on a high state of alert since holy warriors allied to the Islamic State

group killed 32 people in suicide kabooms at Brussels airport and on the city’s subway. The federal government has deployed soldiers on streets around prominent buildings and introduced increased security checks for travelers and commuters.

Security Protection
Since Friday evening, several members of Belgium’s federal government, including Prime Minister Michel, have been subject to heightened security protection, broadcaster RTBF said, without saying where it got the information. The overnight anti-terror raids were not linked to the threat to politicians, RTBF said.

A Belgian citizen, identified only as Youssef E.A., born on Aug. 4, 1985, was arrested and detained in connection with the March attacks, the federal prosecutor said in a statement sent by e-mail late Friday.

Separately, a French terror probe is under way after Larossi Abballa, who swore allegiance to Islamic State, stabbed a policeman and his partner to death on Monday and may have planned similar attacks on rap stars, public figures and the media, according to Sherlocks. Abballa, the attacker, was killed by police inside the couple’s house near Gay Paree.

The Gay Paree prosecutor on Saturday said it’s investigating and requesting detention of two other individuals, Charaf-Din Aberouz and Saad Rajraji, following the slaying. Aberouz, Rajraji and Abballa had been convicted in 2013 in a previous terror case.
An Nahar adds:
According to state broadcaster RTBF and daily Phlegmish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, Prime Minister Charles Michel, Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, Interior Minister Jan Jambon and Justice Minister Koen Geens, are among a group of 30 people who, along with their families, have had their personal security stepped up since Friday.

RTBF added that there is no link to the most recent raids.

The court acquitted Mursi of charges of having supplied Qatar

Iraqi army seizes hospital, jails as military ops continue in Fallujah
[RUDAW.NET] Military operations against remaining Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) murderous Moslems in the liberated town of Fallujah are ongoing and late on Saturday three secret ISIS jails were broken up and a main hospital was recaptured in the embattled town.

According to a statement issued by Iraqi Terror Combat Forces, three secret prisons were found by the forces and a main hospital in downtown Fallujah was seized. The hospital was, however, destroyed after ISIS set it on fire upon their retreat from the area.

During the operation to take the hospital, Iraqi soldiers entered the building slowly, fearing that the murderous Moslems would use patients as human shields, Brig. Gen. Haider al-Obeidi told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named, adding that they did not find any patients inside.

Retaking Fallujah is the final step to wiping out ISIS' foothold in Anbar province.

Over the past year, Iraqi forces backed by US-led Arclight airstrikes have, city by city, regained large parts of the country. But the biggest prize, Iraq's second largest city, djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, and surrounding territory in the north, remains under Islamic State control.

Friday evening, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi spoke on national TV from the joint command center, congratulating the troops on their victories.

"We promised to liberate Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
and it has returned to the embrace of the nation," he said.

ISIS took over the city in early 2014. It was the first area to fall into its hands before the murderous Moslems overran most of Anbar and much of northern Iraq.

Blame follows the bombs in Khurmatu
[RUDAW.NET] Various groups are throwing around accusations of blame for the instability in Khurmatu following multiple kabooms in the town that killed two and injured twelve on Saturday.

Kurdish officials in the town believe the presence of Shia militias contributes to the insecurity and violence.

"Due to our problems with Hashd al-Shaabi [Shiite militia] in the past, we were watching them all the time and paid close attention to others. Those behind the kabooms benefit from tensions between us and the Hashd," said Hassan Baram, a Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) official in Khurmatu.

Kurdish forces and Shiite militia have a history of problems in Khurmatu, located on the route from Kirkuk south to Baghdad. Deadly festivities between the two forces rocked the multiethnic town in April, killing at least 30 people. In May, a joint military force was established consisting of Peshmerga and Shiite militia to provide security for the town.

But there is a lack of trust between the two forces.

Shia officials reject the suggestion they are responsible for the lack of security and say that foreign hands are behind Khurmatu’s instability.

Abu Sara, one of the leaders of Asa’ib Ahl Al-Haq, a Shiite militia told Rudaw, "Those who make trouble are not us. It is foreign hands because The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and many others sent their spies to create fights between Shias and Kurds and they urge the parties not to pass one day with stability. So we do not understand why our PUK brothers accuse us of instability and problems as they know ISIS is behind the kabooms. It is true that before there was a problem, but we made a deal and peace with the Kurds."

"I think ISIS, seeking Dire Revenge for their failures in Pir Ahmed, Zanjari and Habw villages, is creating these kabooms. We work together for the stability of the town because our religious and ethnic fellows are living in Khurmatu and it’s our duty to protect them," added Abu Sara.

The PUK believes that part of the problem is the plethora of militia trying to operate in the town that is too small to accommodate so many diverse forces. "All those different gangs are present in Khurmatu, causing instability in town," Baram said.

"Khurmatu is like a diversified and colorful military base. Such a small district cannot contain all those brigades, battalions, foreign and internal forces. The Kurdish authority should try to expel those forces from the town and the security of Khurmatu should be handed to the security forces," he explained.

The people of the town have suffered for so long and they just want the troubles to stop. "After 2003 we no longer had the Baath regime’s brutality around but then the PUK allowed the Shia militias into Khurmatu and now it became trouble for us," said Jasim Muhammed, a citizen of Khurmatu.

Today three kabooms hit Tuz Khurmatu in three different locations, at three different times. Two were killed and 12 maimed.

SDF forces break ISIS defense lines and reach trapped civilians in Manbij
[RUDAW.NET] Forces of the Manbij Military Council say they have broken the Islamic State

's first lines of defense in order to reach trapped civilians who need urgent help such as water and food supplies.

"Concerning the trapped, we are trying to deal with the matter. Before we target any place we try to make sure there are no civilians in there, and this is one of the foundations of our operations. I can say that this campaign has been successful at every level. So far no damage was done to any civilians, no mistakes on the fronts between us and the civilians. We are being very careful and we are dealing with the matter very seriously," Sharfan Darwish, official front man of the Manbij Military Council said.

According to Nasser haj Mansour, adviser in the Syrian Democratic forces: "Manbij Military Council forces are working to rescue civilians from the jaws of ISIS and also working to open safe corridors from within the city. The stay of civilians inside the city is not because of the military council siege of the city but because ISIS is trying to use them as human shields."

General Commander of the military council, Adnan Abu Amjad, reported that his forces have managed to free more than 1,000 square kilometers of the Manbij countryside, and have killed and maimed nearly a thousand members of ISIS.

He claimed that the bodies of about 500 dead ISIS turbans lay in the hands of the military council.

"Our forces are now advancing towards the city and the siege is almost complete on the city. Our troops are rapidly advancing into the place where there are no civilians." Adnan Abu Amjad said.

Doctor listed on psych-evaluation carried out on Omar Mateen by G4S says she never saw him
  • [DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] Psychologist, Dr Carol Nudelman, said she didn't evaluate Orlando shooter Omar Mateen for his position at security firm G4S in 2007

  • However, her name appears on the document in Florida's state records that cleared him to carry a firearm as a private security guard

  • G4S officials called the discrepancy a 'clerical error' and said Mateen had been evaluated, but by a different psychologist

  • Company didn't move Mateen to unarmed position despite evidence that concluded comments he made were serious enough to transfer him

  • 'What I do know is that in September 2007, I was not living or working in Florida, I was not performing any work for Wackenhut, and I did not administer any type of examination to Omar Mateen,' Nudelman said in the statement.
So it's a lazy Sunday and I have time to ask a whole bunch of questions:
  • How many other evaluations did G4S fudge? Because it sure looks like they fudged this one.

  • And did they let Omar go through because they didn't want to appear to be "Islamophobic"?

  • Or did they have orders from DHS?

  • Did they make up for it by doing extra-careful screening on all potential employees named "Bubba"?

  • And hey, isn't this the same company moving illegal aliens around for DHS?

  • Anyone think that DHS and the FBI are combing the G4S employment files right now looking at every OTHER security guard that was supposedly vetted by this doctor?

  • And boy howdy, didn't the good doctor find a set of attorneys like real fast?

  • Another question: parse the good doctor's statement carefully. She says she didn't evaluate Omar, but she DIDN'T say that she didn't sign the document. Did she?

  • Oh, oh, oh, pick me -- did the doctor get paid for any "evaluations" after she left the firm? It would a little hard to explain a cancelled check, now wouldn't it?

  • And for bonus points, was this documentation planted a while back by some organization on behalf of a "sleeper" agent?

One injured in gun battle
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: At least one person was seriously maimed in crossfire between two groups in a village in Banigala late on Friday evening, police said.

The incident took place over a dispute regarding the parking of a cycle of violence in front of the Farooqia Mosque in Banigala. Asif Khan had gone to the mosque for his Zuhr prayers and parked his cycle of violence in front of the building. Police said volunteers performing security duties prohibited him from doing so.

One of the volunteers, Raja Aqib, the secretary of the mosque committee, was among the people who asked Mr Khan to park elsewhere. Police said Mr Khan began arguing with them.
"Do you know who I am? Do you know who I am?!?"
A scuffle broke out between the two parties, and the situation was defused with the interference of elders. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
when Mr Khan and his homies 10 other people came to the mosque to perform their Asr prayers, the conflict erupted again.

Once more, elders intervened and informed Mr Khan and his lover companions that parking in and around the place of worship was prohibited during Ramazan, as directed by police and the local administration. Police said the group threatened the elders before leaving.

They said Mr Khan and a dozen others ‐ armed with weapons, iron rods and batons ‐ came to the mosque after iftar and began searching for Raja Aqib. They then went to his house, located near the mosque, and called him outside. Police said the men beat Mr Aqib and destroyed vehicles and homes around the mosque, and began firing indiscriminately.

In retaliation, villagers climbed onto the roofs of their houses and began firing, resulting in a shootout.

Individuals were maimed in the crossfire, including one man from the side of the attackers, police said. They said the attackers then left the area. Banigala police confirmed the incident, and said one of the injured people was shifted to a hospital. No further details were available at the time this report was filed.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the prisoners were released during an operation led by the Afghan army and in coordination with the other security institutions including the Afghan Air Force.

A statement by MoD said the command and control center of the Talibs was also destroyed during an Arclight airstrike carried out by the Afghan Air Force.

The statement further added that the raid was conducted in Nahr-e-Saraj district and at least 6 snuffies were also killed.

The anti-government armed bad boy groups including the Taliban bandidos holy warriors have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as the Afghan commandos released at least 23 snuffies during a similar raid in this province nearly a month ago.

The operation was conducted in Marjah district of Helmand to destroy a prison run by the Talibs and release the hostages.

Germany blasts NATO for 'warmongering' that risks reviving 'an old confrontation'

Anaconda drills, which he claims are used to counter "Russian aggression", are counterproductive to security within Europe.
Betcha he wasn't fond of Pershing missiles back in the day, either.
He claims the "warmongering" could inflame the standoff with Russia and alliance troops hold instead "renew discussions about the benefits of disarmament and arms control for security in Europe."
So we know which side he's on.
But Moscow has pointed out it has no plans to reignite a tense standoff with the West in the future.

The Anaconda drills have become NATO's largest exercise in Europe since the Cold War.

Russia slammed for striking Syrian rebels
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Russia launched a second air strike on US-backed Syrian fighters battling ISIS, even after the US military used emergency channels to ask Moscow to stop after the first strike, a US official told Rooters on Friday.

The official, who spoke to on condition of anonymity, said a small number of Syrian fighters were killed in Thursday’s air strikes in southern Syria.

The Pentagon has criticized the strike near al-Tanf, saying it raised concerns about Russian intentions in Syria and promising to bring up the matter with Russia. No Russia or Russian-backed Syrian ground forces were in the area at the time.

"This was an attack on forces first of all that were fighting ISIS. And obviously that’s the first thing that’s problematic about this Russian conduct," US Defense Secretary Ash Carter told news hounds, using an acronym for the radical group ISIS.

"The Russians initially said they were coming in to fight ISIS, and that’s not what they did."

Asked about the incident, the Kremlin said on Friday it was hard to distinguish between moderate and bully boy rebels on the ground when it came to targeting air strikes in Syria because they were frequently fighting close to one another.

Carter did not get into details about the sequence of events but told a news conference that "the channel that we have to communicate with them in instances like this wasn’t professionally used."

Erdoğan vows to reconstruct military barracks in Istanbul's Gezi Park
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to reconstruct the historic Taksim military barracks in Istanbul's Gezi Park, a project that sparked country-wide protests in 2013.
Delusions of grandeur. He's behaving more and more like Il Duce...
"One of the subjects that we have to be brave is Gezi Park in Taksim. Look, I am saying once again. We will construct that historic building there," Erdoğan said on June 18 speaking at an event in Istanbul.

The president also said the project might include a corner where German, French or the American history would be showcased to tell the world what they had done in the past, referring to the German parliament's recent approval of the 'Armenian genocide' bill.

Erdoğan also said that a huge opera building would be constructed in Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM).

The Gezi Protests started as a sit-in by a small group of environmental advocates to stop bulldozers from razing the park, one of the few green spaces left in Taksim neighborhood, to build a shopping mall. However, it quickly spread across Turkey, as millions of citizens took to the streets in mass demonstrations that shook Turkey throughout the summer of 2013. It later developed into a revolt against what protesters said was the increasing authoritarianism of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Eight protesters were killed during the unrest, while a police officer also died after chasing protesters during the uprising.

Afghanistan
Taliban shadow governor for Ghazni killed in an airstrike
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Taliban’s shadow governor for the southeastern Ghazni province was killed in an Arclight airstrike in this province, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said Saturday.

According to a statement by MoI, Mullah Qasim was killed along with his other fighters in an air raid in Aab Band district.

It was yet not clear if the Arclight airstrike was carried out by the Afghan Air Force or the United States Forces in Afghanistan.

The US President Barack Obama
That’s just how white folks will do you....
granted broader role to the US Forces in Afghanistan to assist the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces in their fight against a resurgent Taliban.

Teh US forces were earlier carrying out regular Arclight airstrikes against the loyalists of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
MoI said at least two other bandidos faceless myrmidons were maimed and several vehicles and cycle of violences were destroyed in the raid.

According to MoI, Mullah Qasim had a major role in terrorist activities in various parts of Ghazni province and his death will have a positive result on security situation of the province.

Radiohead Listening Party in Istanbul Attacked by Islamists
[VARIETY] A group of radical Islamists attacked a listening party in Istanbul where Radiohead was holding a listening party for fans in support of their new album.

The men reportedly stormed the record store, Velvet Indieground, in Istanbul, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, and used pipes to violently beat fans running away from the venue for drinking alcohol during the holy month of Ramadan.

"Our hearts go out to those attacked tonight at Velvet IndieGround in Istanbul," Radiohead said in a statement. "We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support."

It’s unknown how many people were maimed in the uproar or the severity of their injuries.

One of the store’s owners allegedly posted about the encounter on Reddit, saying, "I am the person that’s speaking in that video. I am the owner of that periscope account. They were determined to kill us. We were beaten by more than 20 men with pipes in their hands, beer bottles were broken on our heads. I don’t even know how we made it out. I will share the details later guys, just hoping that no one will die."

The event was part of a global listening party in support of Radiohead’s new album, "A Moon Shaped Pool," and included specially curated playlists, games, and limited-edition vinyls.

Two men throw acid on their brother
[DAWN] LAYYAH: Two men allegedly threw acid on their brother to dissuade him from pursuing the marriage dissolution case of their sister in a court of Karor Lal Esan.

Muhammad Tariq, a resident of Mauza Murad Ali, was returning home after appearing in the family court for marriage dissolution of his sister Bashiran Mai when his brothers Muhammad Ramzan and Muhammad Sajjad, who were following him on cycle of violence, threw acid on him and sped away.

Tariq suffered burns and was taken to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital from where he was shifted to the DHQ hospital due to his critical condition. Dr Mehboob Qureshi, the medical superintendent, said Tariq suffered burns on left side of the face, his lower abdomen and legs.

Karor SHO Muhammad Riaz told Dawn that police had started the paperwork but haven't done much else under section 336-B, 7 ATA against Sajjad and Ramzan.

Why the ‘lone-wolf’ terrorist is a myth
[NYPost] President B.O. says don't worry, the Orlando terrorist was just another "lone actor" operating in isolation, unconnected to any larger group of supporters. In fact, these so-called "lone wolves" are running in packs, and suggesting otherwise gives the public a false sense of security.

In fact, suspects in all but a handful of the roughly 90 ISIS terror cases prosecuted in America since 2014 were part of a group of up to 10 co-conspirators who met in person to discuss their plans or who made contact via text messaging or e-mail, Rooters found in a recent review of Justice Department case files.
Yet Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson echoed Obama, saying Omar Mateen was "self-radicalized" without any religious, ideological or operational support from friends, family or others in the Moslem community.

"What we do know at this point is it appears this was a case of self-radicalization," Johnson said. "He does not appear to have been part of any group."

#1  In fact, mosques are the connective tissue in all these attacks and plots.

Sunni mosques that provide literature from Ibn Taymiyyah, Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and the book "Milestones" by Sayyid Qutb provide fertile ground. Seeds sown and fertilized with Salifism, Takfiri thought, and Absolution via Martyrdom spring up in the new zealots and in the desperate...and we reap this bloody harvest.

Former Gitmo prisoner vanishes in South America
More on this story from yesterday.
A former Guantanamo Bay prison living in Uruguay has vanished under mysterious circumstances, The Washington Post reports.
Oh how mysterious! Where, oh where could he be?
Law enforcement is now searching for the former detainee, Jihad Ahmed Mustafa Dhiab, a Syrian national, the paper reported Friday, citing a U.S. official.

“We are coordinating with officials in Brazil and Uruguay to determine his whereabouts,” the official told the paper on background to discuss a sensitive incident.

Officials believe Dhiab, imprisoned at Guantanamo in 2002 for suspected ties to al Qaeda, may have entered Pakistan Brazil illegally.

According to Uruguayan media, the country’s interior minister said Thursday Dhiab’s can make international trips, but Brazil hasn’t allowed him to enter the country previously, the Post reported.

Another Uruguayan government official told the Associated Press that Dhiab traveled legally to Pakistan Brazil, according to the Post. He hasn't been seen since June 6, a Brazilian online news outlet, Plus55.com, reported Friday.

“If Brazilian authorities didn’t allow his legal entry, they can send Dhiab back to Uruguay, but that’s a problem for Brazil,” the news outlet quoted Uruguayan Interior Minister Eduardo Bonomi as saying.

Dhiab went to Uruguay with five other Guantanamo Bay prisoners in 2014 in a deal between the south American country and Uruguay and the U.S. to resettle detainees seen as posing little threat. He spent 12 years at Guantanamo without being charged after his capture in Pakistan.

Droning Mullah Fazlullah
[DAWN] IN Pakistain, anger has greeted the killing of Afghan Taliban head, Mullah Mansour, by an American drone on Pak territory. When senior US officials visited army chief Gen Raheel Sharif
..Pak chief of army staff, meaning he pulls the strings on the Nawaz Sharif puppet to make it dance and sing and not do much at all....
at the Rawalpindi GHQ, he expressed strong displeasure at the violation of Pakistain’s air space and demanded that Tehrik-e-Taliban head, Mullah Fazlullah
...son-in-law of holy man Sufi Mohammad. Known as Mullah FM, Fazlullah had the habit of grabbing his FM mike when the mood struck him and bellowing forth sermons. Sufi suckered the Pak govt into imposing Shariah on the Swat Valley and then stepped aside whilst Fazlullah and his Talibs imposed a reign of terror on the populace like they hadn't seen before, at least not for a thousand years or so. For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan...
, together with other TTP bully boys, be targeted by drones. Linked to Al Qaeda, TTP has a history of savage atrocities committed against the people of Pakistain, its children, and armed forces. This demand was duly applauded across the country.

‘Law enforcement’ via leaks
[DAWN] A PARLIAMENTARY committee tasked with drawing up the terms of reference for a judicial inquiry into the Panama Papers leaks is deadlocked with an increasingly frustrated opposition threatening to take its protest to the streets if the issue isn’t resolved soon -- and what do we get?

Well, we get the video of the imprisoned Dr Asim Hussain, bosom buddy and confidant of former president Asif Ali Zardari whose PPP is among the opposition parties now raising the possibility of resorting to street agitation.

In the leaked video, lapped up by TV channels and reported by all media, Dr Hussain is seen and heard telling his interrogators how corrupt the former president’s adoptive brother, Owais Muzaffar Tappi, is. Tappi, along with Asif Ali Zardari’s sister Feryal Talpur, was at one point seen as the de facto Sindh chief minister.

What is the revelatory angle in this whole episode? Anyone who has even a passing knowledge of the PPP’s working knows well that Tappi, up to his departure to foreign lands, and Ms Talpur, on an ongoing basis, are the ones who make all the crucial calls in Sindh with the soft-spoken Syed Qaim Ali Shah quietly serving as the rubber stamp.

Yes, Mr Zardari’s family members and friends are reputed to have their hand in every pie from postings and transfers to award of government contracts to land deals with dodgy developers or wherever a profit is to be made, and are never to be found far from the action.

The interesting aspect of this leak, notwithstanding questions regarding the legality and ethics of its release, is that it is being traced to Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan by the media. Mr Khan can forgive a million sins including the murder of the innocent by anyone with a religious agenda, no matter how odious, but hates non-religious forces with a passion.

Clueless in D.C.
[DAWN] WHEN we have tense relations with three of our four neighbours, clearly our foreign policy cannot be deemed to be a brilliant success.

As a further mark of its abject failure, we have been unable to sustain good relations with our principal benefactor and the world’s sole superpower, the United States. The goal of any foreign policy is to maintain good ties with neighbours; to promote security and trade; and to enhance the country’s image abroad.

By all these measures, successive governments since the 1980s have failed. Even when 9/11 gave us a chance to rehabilitate ourselves in the world’s eyes, we chose to continue using jihadists and mercenary forces of Evil as proxies to further our agenda in Kashmire and Afghanistan.

Lewinsky allegedly freaked out after Clinton's affair with VP's daughter

"President Bill Clinton had an affair with former Vice President Walter Mondale’s daughter -- while multitasking with at least two mistresses in the White House -- according to a tell-all by a Secret Service officer who guarded the Oval Office.

Gary J. Byrne's account of walking in on Clinton and the gorgeous Eleanor Mondale, then a TV journalist, is the first eyewitness report of the long-rumored affair.

"There before us was E! Network host Eleanor Mondale . . . and President Clinton in a compromising position, that is, making out on the Map Room table," Byrne writes of the alleged Christmastime tryst around the middle of Clinton's presidency.

Proof positive that women are selfish.

Turkey launches latest corvette
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s goal of self-sufficiency in defense as he launched a new warship on Saturday, Anadolu reported.

Speaking at the launch of the TCG Burgazada, an indigenously produced corvette, at the Istanbul naval shipyard, Erdogan said Turkey would soon “be in a position to make our own aircraft carriers. Turkey, especially, cannot stall on defense industry and military issues because of our strategic geographical location.”
Sure buddy, go build a Nimitz, or even a Charles de Gaulle...
The president has previously said Turkey’s defense industry will be self-sufficient by 2023, the centenary of the declaration of the republic.

The Burgazada is the third Ada-class corvette produced under the MILGEM project. The first was the Heybeliada, launched in 2008.

The ships, which are named after the Princes’ Islands off Istanbul, are designed for search and rescue, patrol and anti-submarine warfare duties and are armed with a 76 millimeter gun, missiles and torpedoes and carry a Seahawk helicopter. The ships have a displacement of 2,400 tons, a maximum speed of more than 29 knots (33 miles an hour) and a range of 3,500 nautical miles.
So they're better armed, have longer range, and are faster than an LCS. And a lot cheaper, I'll bet. Hmmm....

12 girls found living in Pa. home; homeowner faces sex charges
[CBSNEWS] FEASTERVILLE, Pa. -- An eastern Pennsylvania man is facing child sex assault charges after police say they found 12 girls living in his home. He allegedly admitted to fathering the youngest child -- a six-month-old -- and a three-year-old child with the oldest girl, 18.

Police nabbed
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
51-year-old Lee Kaplan at his home in Feasterville, about 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia, June 16 after receiving a complaint about the health and safety of numerous children in the home. According to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Lower Southampton Township Police Department, a resident at the home told neighbors that no children lived there.

When police responded, they discovered the 12 girls. They allege Kaplan admitted to having sex with the teen when she was 14 and fathering the three-year-old as well as the six-month-old. The 18-year-old also told police that she was the mother of two of the children and said she was not married to Kaplan, according to the affidavit.

CBS Philly reports police believe all of the children are originally from an Amish community in Lancaster County. Police say they are working to find an expert in Amish culture to help them conduct interviews with the children. Police say the 18-year-old was living with Kaplan after some kind of business agreement with the girl's parents.

According to an affidavit, the girl's father told an officer he gave his daughter to Kaplan after he helped the family out of financial ruin. He told police he thought it was legal after he did some research online.

It was unknown if any of the other girls were subject to any abuse, officials say.

Neighbors told CBS Philly that they complained about the home three years ago, after suspicions about things not seeming to be right.

"I really can't believe it, because I really thought it was his own daughter. It looks like his own daughter to me," one neighbor said.

According to people who live nearby, the girls were rarely let outside and didn't go to school.

Kaplan faces a number of charges including statutory sexual assault and aggravated indecent assault. The girl's father is charged with conspiracy of statutory sexual assault and children endangerment. His wife is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

DNC Financial Records Stolen By "Guccifer 2.0"
[THESMOKINGGUN] Though the Democratic National Committee contends that no financial, donor, or personal information was stolen during the breach of its computer networks, that claim is belied by an assortment of internal party documents provided to TSG by "Guccifer 2.0," the vandal who has claimed credit for the hacking.

The hacker forwarded an assortment of Excel spreadsheets containing the names, e-mail addresses, occupations, and phone numbers of thousands of individuals, many of whom are listed as Democratic donors.

According to metadata embedded in the spreadsheets, the documents were created by various Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee staffers.

The pilfered records include entries as recent as April, proof that "Guccifer 2.0" was recently rooting around in the DNC’s system. The hacker has ignored TSG questions about why the DNC was targeted (or whether the incursion was a Russian intelligence operation, as suspected by a security firm hired by the Democratic party).

In e-mails, the hacker wrote of possessing "lot of docs that I don't have time to study" and declared, "Fuck all the illuminati and rich clans which try to rule the governments."

Along with recording contributions from financiers, lobbyists, and other major donors, the spreadsheets include detailed records of funds being provided to the party by elected officials (and whether the DNC is meeting its monthly goals).

One spreadsheet tracks the big donors who have shelled out for expensive "packages" connected to next month’s Democratic National Convention. With the party convening in Philadelphia, the "packages" carry names like "Liberty Bell," "1776," "Independence Hall," and "Constitution." But not all "packages" carry Philly-centric branding: Former congressman Richard Gephardt, now a lobbyist, has opted for the "Pelosi 150."

Kalash girl says she converted to Islam of her own volition
Follow-up to this article from two days ago.
[DAWN] The dispute over conversion to Islam of a Kalash girl was resolved on Friday when 14-year-old Reena recorded her statement before a judicial magistrate, saying she had converted out of her free will, according to a government official.

On Thursday, the girl’s decision to embrace Islam sparked a clash between the Kalash tribe and members of the Moslem community in Chitral’s Bamburate Valley, forcing police to use teargas to disperse the mobs. The clash erupted after the girl was reported to have gone back on her conversion and the Moslem community accused the Kalash tribe of forcing her to do so.

Deputy Commissioner Osama Waraich visited the valley on Friday and convened a jirga of elders from both sides, according to a dawn.com report.

Mr Waraich told DawnNews that both sides had agreed that the girl’s statement would be treated as final and they would accept her decision. The administration brought the girl to Chitral town from her village on Friday and presented her before a judicial magistrate.

The girl recorded her statement before a magistrate, saying that she had not been forced to convert to Islam, said the deputy commissioner.

He said the girl’s family and the Kalash community had accepted her statement. "It is now up to the girl to decide whether she lives with her Kalash family or the Moslem community."

A villager earlier told Dawn by phone from Chitral that the girl had embraced Islam on Wednesday "under the guidance" of a local Moslem, left her home and decided to stay with the man’s family in the same village.

But Luke Rehmat, a Kalash activist, said the girl, a student of class IX, had a change of heart on Thursday, saying that she had made a mistake in converting to Islam and returned to her home. Following this, he told Dawn, a group of villagers started marching on the Kalash quarter of Bamburate village. They alleged that the girl’s relatives had forcibly taken her away from the Moslem home and compelled her to go back on her conversion.

The activist also claimed that the villagers attacked a Kalash house with stones and sticks.

The Kalash community elders and the girl’s family were of the view that the teenager was lured and forced to change her religion.

About 3,000 Kalash live in Bamburate, Birir and Rambur Valleys -- all in southern Chitral. Their youth have been converting to Islam in large numbers of late, prompting activists to launch a campaign for preserving traditions of the ancient, diminishing tribe.
Eohippus Snore8229 shared this lovely link about the Kalash tribe the other day. Quite a few of the young Kalashes appear to be choosing Islam over their traditional paganism.

Teenage 'militant' killed in Bangladesh 'gunfight' after Hindu attack
[DAWN] DHAKA: A teenage suspected holy warrior being held in jug in Bangladesh was rubbed out Saturday in a shootout, police said, days after he allegedly hacked and critically maimed a Hindu lecturer.

Police said Golam Faizullah Fahim, a 19-year-old Moslem, who was in jug for questioning, was killed when officers came under attack in a farmland area after taking him to a river in search of his associates.

"Miscreants fired at the police van as we came near a jute farm. A shootout ensued. After the shootout we saw Fahim was shot and maimed. He died after we brought him to a hospital," Sarwar Hossain, police chief of Madaripur, where the shooting took place, told AFP.

Locals in Madaripur caught Fahim on Wednesday after he and two other suspected Death Eaters attacked and maimed 50-year-old mathematics lecturer Ripon Chakrabarti, a Hindu, police said.

The attack was the latest in a wave of brutal assaults on secular activists, writers and religious minorities by suspected Islamist holy warriors.

Police later told news hounds Fahim was a college student and was a member of banned Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir
...an al-Qaeda recruiting organization banned in most countries. It calls for the reestablishment of the Caliphate...
Hizbut Tahrir (Party of Liberation) is an international holy warrior group outlawed in several countries, including Bangladesh.

Six suspected Islamist Death Eaters have now been rubbed out since Bangladesh launched a nationwide crackdown on local jihadist groups in the wake of a spike in murders of secular activists and religious minorities.

The drive has seen more than 11,000 people including 194 Death Eaters nabbed
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
over the past week despite widespread criticism by local and international human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
groups.

Rights activists also questioned the incidents of deaths in police custody, saying the Death Eaters were rubbed out in "cold blood" in encounters staged by officers.

Nearly 50 people have been killed over the last three years in a wave of gruesome murders targeting Hindus, Christians, Sufi Moslems, secular activists and foreigners, with most blamed on or claimed by Islamist holy warriors.

Many of the victims were hacked to death with machetes.

This month alone, an elderly Hindu priest was found nearly decapitated in a rice field and a Hindu monastery worker was hacked to death, while a Christian grocer was found murdered near a church.

The holy warrior Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group has grabbed credit for the Hindu priest's murder and other recent attacks.

But authorities instead blame homegrown holy warrior groups and say international groups such as IS and Al-Qaeda have no presence in Bangladesh.

Although it is officially secular, around 90 pc of Bangladesh's 160 million-strong population is Moslem. Some eight percent of the population is Hindu.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
The Perils of Leading by Common Sense
[IranWire] Iran’s reformists often put down former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a “populist,” and refer – disdainfully — to his eight years in office as the only populist era in post-revolutionary Iran. This is nonsense. The Revolution was led by perhaps the greatest populist of all: Ayatollah Rudhollah Khomeini.

Here’s how the distinguished historian, Ervand Abrahamian, puts it. Khomeinism, like other populist movements…. “elevated its leader into a demigod towering above the people, and embodying their historical roots, future destiny, and revolutionary martyrs. Despite all the talk about the people, power emanated down from the leader, not up from the masses. Thus the title of imam should be seen not as purely religious but as the Shia-Iranian version of the Latin American El Lider, El Conductor, Jefe Maximo (Chief Boss), and O Pai dos Pobres (Father of the Poor).”

Populist leaders — whether Jefe Maximo or Supreme Imam – present themselves as men of the people who talk good old common sense. It takes a brave citizen to point out that the leader’s “common sense” masks simplistic foolishness.

In fact, many officials – including some the leader’s inner circle – know perfectly well that his populist proposals are misguided and simplistic. But when I ask why they don’t speak up, they turn pale, and mutter: “I’ve got a family to support.”
Take Chairman Mao, another populist demigod, and his 1950s Great Sparrow Campaign in China. Determined not to have to rely on Western (imperialist) powers for wheat, he set out to make China self-sufficient. Sparrows eat grain so, he reasoned, no more sparrows equals more grain. All over China, peasants shot sparrows by the millions. They even posed for photograph with heaps of the dead birds to show their loyalty to the Chairman and the Revolution. It was a disaster. With no birds to prey on them, insect populations exploded and feasted on the wheat crop. Grain production shrank. Famine followed.

Here in Iran, now only was our first Supreme Leader Ayatollah Rudhollah Khomeini a demagogic populist, but so is our second and current one, Ali Khameinei. He, like Mao, makes poor policy based on common sense dressed up as – in his words — “scientific expertise,” i.e. not something ordinary citizens can criticize or question.

Let’s take the example of the so-called “Economy of Resistance”, Khamenei’s answer to globalization. Basically, he says Iranians should minimize trade with the US and Europe, and make everything ourselves. He’s afraid that stronger commercial ties will bolster non-Islamic values in Iran (and he may be right – but that’s another story). Recently the Supreme Leader, speaking to a group of young militia members, praised Iran’s ballistic missile program. It was proof, he said, that the country has no need of outside expertise or imports. Iran’s factories might be outdated and in need of modernization, he said, but the new equipment should be made in Iran with the help of “talented Iranian youth.”

“If gifted Iranian minds can fire a missile 2,000 kilometers with an accuracy of 10 meters, why can we not also re-fit machinery and equipment in our industries, including car manufacturing?”

Clearly the leader has only a rudimentary understanding of business and the global economy. There are dozens of reasons why it doesn’t make sense for Iran to pursue a policy of industrial isolationism, starting with the enormous cost for inferior results.

I wonder if he’s familiar with the words of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the isolationist Soviet Union, which had bankrupted itself making sophisticated weapons at the expense of almost everything else. He said: “when a country can put a satellite into space, but still has to harvest potatoes by hand – there’s something wrong in its approach.”

No one dares contradict the leader – not in public anyway. After all, who wants to be the first to point out that the emperor is naked? But it’s no secret that Pakistan – with a population well over 150 million – has neither distinguished itself in war nor been able to offer educational opportunity to most of its talented citizens.

In fact, many officials – including some the leader’s inner circle – know perfectly well that his populist proposals are misguided and simplistic. But when I ask why they don’t speak up, they turn pale, and mutter: “I’ve got a family to support.”

Such is the tyranny of “common sense”.

Donald Trump says Orlando massacre would have been averted if the victims were armed
  • [DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] Speaking Friday, Trump said armed club-goers would have stopped Mateen

  • He said that Mateen being shot - 'boom, boom' - would have been 'beautiful'

  • He also mocked Obama for calling for restrictions on gun sales

  • But earlier he'd said he didn't want guns sold to those on FBI's 'watch list'

FBI questions member of mosque attended by Orlando gunman
FBI agents on Friday questioned a member of the Florida mosque attended by Omar Mateen, the man who shot 49 people to death at a gay nightclub, as new information surfaced revealing the killer had exhibited chronic behavioral problems during his youth.

Academic records obtained by Reuters showing Mateen was frequently suspended as a student - at least twice for fighting before he was transferred to a special high school for potential dropouts - added to a disturbing portrait of the long-troubled gunman who committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Mateen, the 29-year-old private security guard shot dead by police at the end of the June 12 massacre in Orlando, has been described by his first wife - whom he divorced after a brief marriage - as an abusive, mentally disturbed man with a violent temper.

Others who knew him recalled Mateen, a U.S. citizen and Florida resident born in New York to Afghan immigrants, as a quiet, socially awkward individual who kept largely to himself.
"He was a quiet man..."
The FBI has acknowledged interviewing Mateen in 2013 and 2014 for suspected ties to Islamist militant groups but concluded he posed no threat. Still, evidence in the Orlando case points to a crime at least inspired by extremist ideology.
At least. The official facade is cracking...
Authorities have said Mateen paused a number of times during his three-hour siege at the Pulse nightclub to place cell phone calls to emergency 911 dispatchers and to post internet messages professing support for various Islamist militant groups.

Nevertheless, Mateen appears to have been "self-radicalized" and acting without any direction from outside networks, although his second wife, Noor Salman, had known of his plans to carry out the attack, U.S. officials have said.
We actually don't know that. We don't know who he talked to, who his acquaintances were, and who elsewhere in the world knew about him. One focus is correctly on the mosque: if he had an outside handler, that's where the handler would be...
FBI agents turned their attention on Friday to at least one of Mateen's fellow worshipers at the mosque he attended near his home, the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce. In what was the first such known interview in connection with the nightclub shooting, two federal agents met with the man at the mosque for about 30 minutes ahead of Friday prayers, according to Omar Saleh, a lawyer for the Council of American-Islamic Relations who sat in on the session.

"We were meeting with some agents," Saleh told Reuters, declining to identify the person interviewed. "They were asking questions relative to the incident that happened on Sunday."
Why does a member of CAIR sit in on official interviews in a terrorist investigation?
As details about Mateen's background continued to emerge, transcripts and disciplinary records furnished to Reuters on Friday showed Mateen was suspended at least 15 times during his enrollment in Martin County, Florida, public schools, mostly in the eighth and ninth grades.

Two of those suspensions, within a week of each other in May of 2001, were listed as discipline for "fighting with injury" during his freshman year at Martin County High School. Days after that second suspension, Mateen was transferred to Spectrum Junior-Senior High School, a dropout prevention center run by the district, records showed.

He returned to Martin County High in January 2002, stayed there for another year, then withdrew from mainstream high school and enrolled instead in adult education classes through April 2003.

His academic performance was mixed, a combination of high grades and failing marks, in contrast to his mostly dismal report cards from elementary school.

India-Pakistan
Call for proper procedure for conversion of religion
[DAWN] Time is running out and we need to do something before it’s too late. The Kalash incident has left a grave question mark on the safety of religious minority communities, said the patron of Pakistain Hindu Council and PML-N MNA, Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, at Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
Press Club on Friday evening.

Speaking at a presser on the forced conversion of a girl from Kalash, Dr Vankwani said there was a need to punish those who forced individuals to convert and misused the blasphemy law. He said the government should come up with a proper procedure for those who wanted to convert and give six months to the individuals to learn about the religion before they decide to convert.

On Thursday, hundreds of local residents clashed with members of the Kalash tribe in Bumburate, Chitral, after a teenage girl claimed that she had been forced to convert to Islam.

According to the PML-N politician, forced conversions should be stopped as they give the country a bad name.
Not because they're a stench and an abomination, mind you.
He said every time he travelled abroad people came up to him and complained about the human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
violations in Pakistain.
Someday perhaps there will be mass forced conversions of Moslems to Rosicrucianism, or Mormonism, or perhaps even the Church of the Risen Elvis. I'll be long dead by then, but I promise my ghost will be laughing its ephemeral ass off. Maybe if the End Times actually come the trees will be calling out "Jew, there is a Moslem hiding behind me! Come and kill him!"
He said there were four cases of forced conversion being heard by Sindh High Court, including one where a Hindu doctor was being blackmailed and assaulted by the driver of an ambulance. He started listing other cases where Hindu girls from Karachi and Tando Allahyar were raped and forced to convert to Islam.

"Where are our rights? Is this Islam?" he asked a room full of journalists, adding that politicians, political parties and religious leaders need to work together and come up with a solution where an individual is given some time to study and learn about the religion before converting, similar to the procedure followed in India.

"We need to focus on equal rights," he said. "If things go on like this then it will only get worse."

Pakistain Hindu Council president Hotchand Karmani demanded that the government take action against human rights violation. He said incidents of forced conversion in Kalash and Sindh should be stopped.

Mr Vankwani blamed the Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) for not doing their job and fighting for the rights of the minorities. He said the PPP politicians belonging to minority communities did not do anything, as they were "only interested in running wine shops".

Trump’s Appeal to Radical Middle Is a Wake-Up Call to Conservatives
[NationalReview] Donald Trump clinched the GOP nomination by exploiting vulnerabilities few were aware existed. When the 2016 race began, almost no one seemed to have understood that a plurality of the Republican party had a fundamentally different set of policy preferences from those of doctrinaire conservatism. Trump saw this opening and took full advantage.

Trump’s positions follow the contours not of movement conservatism but of American folk nationalism, often known as Jacksonianism. As Walter Russell Mead, my boss over at The American Interest, has noted, Jacksonians characteristically emphasize anti-elitism and egalitarianism while drawing a sharp distinction between members of the folk group and those outside it.

In domestic policy, this translates to tough-on-crime stances and stubborn adherence to traditional views on social issues (and, historically, opposition to civil rights), and to advocacy of government assistance for “deserving” members of the folk group. Looking abroad, they are uninterested in Wilsonian nation-building projects or promoting global order, but if they feel the nation is threatened, they are willing to fight back by whatever means are necessary. Sound familiar yet?

Trump and his supporters need to mend fences fast, or he is going down in the biggest flames since McGovern. This will be even worse if the Democrats are forced to replace the felon they have now with just about anyone else.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
What is it like to fire a Daisy bb gun?
The People's Cube
What’s it like to fire a Daisy bb gun? It’s an experience I’ll never forget. Everybody knows bb guns are scary looking and ought to be banned, but I thought I would try to shoot one without any preconceived notions. What I encountered changed me forever.

I took a deep breath and determined to enter a Wal-Mart. A “greeter” met me with, “Howdy, welcome to Wal-Mart.” I’m from the north. We don’t say “Howdy”. I sneer back at the micro aggression and strain to hold back tears of rage. Barely controlling myself, I asked where I could find a bb gun. He directed me to “sporting goods”, still smiling and gloating over his slyly delivered offense.

I go to the “sporting goods” section, a perfect charnel house where implements of sulfur, death, and destruction are openly and brazenly sold. I notice a bb gun just lying on a shelf. I reach for it as if it was a poisonous snake, wondering if it will go off when I pull it off the shelf. That’s right, a shelf. Where anybody could get it. I go to the counter and the death merchant asks me if I wanted bbs to go with it. He even had the audacity to offer me “Copperhead” brand bbs! How could this inbred hick not know that I see a therapist twice a week to treat my herpephobia? I buy the gun and the recommended bbs. I’m dizzy going out to the parking lot. A passing stranger, attired in a camouflage assault t-shirt, asks, “Sir, you okay?” “How dare you assume my gender!” I shout back. “Sorry, just checkin’,” he said as if my health was any of his business. But the worst was yet to come.

I went to a wooded area to fire the bb gun, a Daisy 509 Buck, probably made by Bushmaster. I bruised my knuckles operating the cocking lever. Taking aim, I closed my eyes, gritted my teeth, and pulled the trigger. The sound of the spring loaded plunger going “boing” startled me. I became disoriented watching the bb arc towards its target. The “dink!” sound it made bouncing off a coke can was horribly loud. The recoil was horrendous, like a bazooka or some other recoilless weapon, and it dislocated my shoulder. I vomited and cried. I still have PTSD. Anxiety. Irritability. Nightmares. I may never again be the same.

But enough about me, at least for now. Worst of all, these weapons of mass destruction are available to the general public. It’s time we stopped listening to the paid lobbyists of the National BB Gun Association who assure us that bb guns are hardly ever used in the commission of a crime. They scare me, they should scare you, and they ought to be banned.

Yemen foes swap prisoners in Taez battleground
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Yemen's warring parties exchanged dozens of prisoners captured in fighting for third city Taez on Saturday following mediation by local tribes, the chief mediator said.

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...

Loyalist officials in the besieged city confirmed the exchange and said it was a local initiative unconnected to UN-brokered peace talks in Kuwait.

Those negotiations, now in their ninth week, have made no major breakthroughs, even on the prisoners issue.

Earlier this month, the militias released 187 prisoners while Soddy Arabia

freed 52 children it was holding.

But that was far short of the target set by UN mediators for 50 percent of all prisoners to be released before the start of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan.

The peace talks have also had little impact on the fighting for Taez despite a UN-brokered ceasefire that took effect on April 11.
Just hours before the prisoner exchange, the rebels rained rocket fire on several parts of the city, residents said.

There was also heavy fighting for the town of Kirsh on the main highway to Taez from the southern port city of Aden, where the government of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi is based.

Despite a 15-month-old intervention by a Saudi-led coalition, the Houthi militias and their allies still control the capital Sanaa and most of the central and northern highlands, as well as the Red Sea coast.

Grand jury to investigate Orlando shooter's widow
Federal investigators digging for clues in the Orlando nightclub massacre are zeroing in on Noor Salman, the widow of gunman Omar Mateen.

What did Salman know of his plans and what might she have done to stop him? Authorities have been trying to pin her down after she apparently gave conflicting statements about what she knew of his intentions in the hours before the attack.

A U.S. attorney plans to bring evidence before a federal grand jury to determine whether charges will be brought, according to two law enforcement officials. The process could take some time, as investigators need to finish collecting evidence and establish a timeline for Mateen's activities leading to Sunday's attack at the gay club Pulse, in which 49 people were killed, the officials said.

Salman, Mateen's second wife, has been cooperating with various law enforcement agencies.
Salman told investigators that Mateen told her he had interest in carrying out a jihadist attack -- but she denied knowing of any specific plans, according to two law enforcement officials.

She initially denied that when Mateen left the house Saturday that she had any idea he was going to do something violent. But in subsequent statements, Salman conceded she had a suspicion he might be planning an attack, perhaps on Pulse, the officials said. According to one official, she knew "for a while" Mateen had thoughts of wanting to do something violent. He had been talking about it for months, if not years.
Hard for her not to know as she had participated in the scouting trips...
According to the second official, Salman told investigators that on Saturday she said she tried to tell him not to commit violence. But she didn't call police.

Mateen and Salman had been married since 2011. They have a 3-year-old son and lived in Fort Pierce, about two hours from where the massacre -- the deadliest shooting in U.S. history -- occurred.

Additionally, it appears that Mateen used Facebook before and during the attack, according to Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson. In a letter to Facebook Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg asking for the company's assistance in the investigation, Johnson said that Mateen used the social networking platform to "search for and post terrorism-related content."

Mateen's messages include declaring his allegiance to ISIS and calls for the U.S. and Russia to stop bombing the terror group, according to the letter. One message reportedly said "now taste the Islamic state vengeance."
