Clinton Foundation Said to Be Breached by Russian Hackers
No need to worry. The information is protected by the strongest encryption known to man: Clinton Foundation accountability- and traceability-proof accounting subterfuge methodology. Of course, if they do manage to penetrate it, they'll have all kinds of dirt they can use to influence her politics. Yeah, let's elect her. What could possibly go wrong if I choose to remain ignorant about it?
Fair point: the Foundation security is so good that they have to restate their financials multiple times to the IRS -- even their own accountants can't get to the truth.
The Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation was among the organizations breached by suspected Russian hackers in a dragnet of the U.S. political apparatus ahead of the November election, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The attacks on the foundation's network, as well as those of the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, compound concerns about her digital security even as the FBI continues to investigate her use of a personal e-mail server while she was secretary of state.

A spokesman for the foundation, Brian Cookstra, said he wasn't aware of any breach. The compromise of the foundation's computers was first identified by government investigators as recently as last week, the people familiar with the matter said. Agents monitor servers used by hackers to communicate with their targets, giving them a back channel view of attacks, often even before the victims detect them.

Before the Democratic National Committee disclosed a major computer breach last week, U.S. officials informed both political parties and the presidential campaigns of Clinton, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders that sophisticated hackers were attempting to penetrate their computers, according to a person familiar with the government investigation into the attacks.

The hackers in fact sought data from at least 4,000 individuals associated with U.S. politics -- party aides, advisers, lawyers and foundations -- for about seven months through mid-May, according to another person familiar with the investigations.

Thousands of Documents

The thefts set the stage for what could be a Washington remake of the public shaming that shook Sony in 2014, when thousands of inflammatory internal e-mails filled with gossip about world leaders and Hollywood stars were made public. Donor information and opposition research on Trump purportedly stolen from the Democratic Party has surfaced online, and the culprit has threatened to publish thousands more documents.

A hacker or group of hackers calling themselves Guccifer 2.0 posted another trove of documents purportedly from the DNC on Tuesday, including what they said was a list of donors who had made large contributions to the Clinton Foundation.

The Republican Party and the Trump campaign have been mostly silent on the computer attacks. In an earlier statement, Trump said the hack was a political ploy concocted by the Democrats.

Information about the scope of the attacks and the government warnings raises new questions about how long the campaigns have known about the threats and whether they have done enough to protect their systems.

The Clinton campaign was aware as early as April that it had been targeted by hackers with links to the Russian government on at least four recent occasions, according to a person familiar with the campaign's computer security.

U.S. Inquiries

The U.S. Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation and National Security Agency are all involved in the investigation of the theft of data from the political parties and individuals over the last several months, one of the people familiar with the investigation said. The agencies have made no public statements about their inquiry.

The FBI has been careful to keep that investigation separate from the review of Clinton's use of private e-mail, using separate investigators, according to the person briefed on the matter. The agencies didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Clinton spokesman Glen Caplin said that he couldn't comment on government briefings about cyber security and that the campaign had no evidence that its systems were compromised.

"We routinely communicate and cooperate with government agencies on security-related matters," he said. "What appears evident is that the Russian groups responsible for the DNC hack are intent on attempting to influence the outcome of this election."

The DNC wouldn't directly address the attacks but said in a written statement that it believes the leaks are "part of a disinformation campaign by the Russians."

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks didn't respond to e-mails seeking comment about the government warnings. The Republican National Committee didn't respond to e-mail messages. A Sanders spokesman, Michael Briggs, said he wasn't aware of the warnings.

IDing the Hackers

The government's investigation is following a similar path as the DNC's, including trying to precisely identify the hackers and their possible motives, according to people familiar with the investigations. The hackers' link to the Russian government was first identified by CrowdStrike Inc., working for the Democratic Party.

A law firm reviewing the DNC's initial findings, Baker & McKenzie, has begun working with three additional security firms -- FireEye Inc., Palo Alto Networks Inc. and Fidelis Cybersecurity -- to confirm the link, according to two people familiar with the matter, underscoring Democrats' concerns that the stolen information could be used to try to influence the outcome of the November election.

A spokesman for Baker & McKenzie didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. DNC spokesman Luis Miranda said the party worked only with CrowdStrike.

If the Democrats can show the hidden hand of Russian intelligence agencies, they believe that voter outrage will probably outweigh any embarrassing revelations, a person familiar with the party's thinking said.

So far the released documents have revealed little that is new or explosive, but that could change. Guccifer 2.0 has threatened to eventually release thousands of internal memos and other documents.

Line of Attack

Sensitive documents from the Clinton Foundation could have the most damaging potential. The Trump camp has said it plans to make the foundation's activities a subject of attacks against Clinton; the sort of confidential data contained in e-mails, databases and other digital archives could aid that effort.

An analysis by Fidelis confirmed that groups linked to Russian intelligence agencies were behind the DNC hack, according to a published report.

The government fills a crucial gap in flagging attacks that organizations can't detect themselves, said Tony Lawrence, a former U.S. Army cyber specialist and now chief executive officer of VOR Technology, a computer security company in Hanover, Maryland.

"These state actors spend billions of dollars on exploits to gather information on candidates, and nine times out of ten [victims] won't be able to identify or attribute them," he said.

Google Accounts

Bloomberg News reported Friday that the hackers who hit the DNC and Clinton's campaign burrowed much further into the U.S. political system than initially thought, sweeping in law firms, lobbyists, consultants, foundations and policy groups in a campaign that targeted thousands of Google e-mail accounts and lasted from October through mid-May.

Data from the attacks have led some security researchers to conclude that the hackers were linked to Russian intelligence services and were broadly successful in stealing reports, policy papers, correspondence and other information. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for President Vladimir Putin, denied that the Russian government was involved.

Russia uses sophisticated "information operations" to advance foreign policy, and the target audience for this kind of mission wouldn't be U.S. voters or even U.S. politicians, said Brendan Conlon, who once led a National Security Agency hacking unit.

"Why would Russia go to this trouble? Simple answer -- because it met their foreign policy objectives, to weaken the U.S. in the eyes of our allies and adversaries," said Conlon, now CEO of Vahna Inc., a cyber security firm in Washington. Publishing the DNC report on Trump "weakens both candidates -- lists out all the weaknesses of Trump specifically while highlighting weaknesses of Clinton's security issues. The end result is a weaker president once elected."

Russia Link

Russia has an expansive cyber force that it has deployed in complex disinformation campaigns throughout Europe, according to intelligence officials.

BfV, the German intelligence agency, has concluded that Russia was responsible for a 2015 hack against the Bundestag that forced shutdown of its computer systems for several days. Germany is under "permanent threat" from Russian hackers, said BfV chief Hans-Georeg Maassen.

Security software maker Trend Micro said in May that Russian hackers had been trying for several weeks to steal data from Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union party, and that they also tried to hack the Dutch Safety Board computer systems to obtain an advance copy of a report on the downing of a Malaysian aircraft over Ukraine in July 2014. The report said the plane was brought down by a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile.

The cyber attacks are part of a broader pattern of state-sponsored hacking by Russia focused on political targets, with a goal of giving Russia the upper hand in dealing with other governments, said Pasi Eronen, a Helsinki-based cyber warfare researcher who has advised Finland's Defense Ministry.

-Land of the Free
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen(D) People Getting The AR-15 Are "Buying It To Do Bad Things"
Democratic New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said certain types of firearms like the AR-15 are the kind of guns that should be banned. She added that people trying to purchase the weapon ‐ which is popular among American gun owners ‐ are "buying it do bad things."
My AR-15 is hurt. It has never done a bad thing and feels left out now...
"Well, I think people need to have their voices heard, and what I've heard from people in New Hampshire is they think there's reasonable legislation that we can pass including things like looking at the types of weapons that so easy for people to get," the New Hampshire Democrat said on Mitchell in the Morning on Monday.
Considering the hoops you have to go through to buy one, I guess this cock splash has never tried to buy it.
"The fact is, the AR-15, the gun that (Omar) Mateen used, that's a weapon of war; it's advertised as being able do technologically advances in killing people that previous weapons have been unable to do and somebody who is buying that kind of a weapon isn't buying it for target shooting," she said. "They're not buying it to go out and hunt deer. You don't need an AK-47 or an AR-15 to hunt deer. They're buying it to do bad things and we need to recognize that and address it."
My .270, which is used for deer was modeled after the Mauser 7mm rifle which WAS a weapon of war. So is it only being used for "Bad Things" too? Also remember that the AR-15 is a very popular varmint and coyote rifle as well.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation says there are anywhere between 5 million to 10 million AR-15 rifles in the United States, according to CNBC. The gun used in the Olrando shooting was not an AR-15, but a Sig Sauer MCX rifle, a similar appearing rifle.
Ooooo... scary looking like the AR! BAN IT!!!

They will keep beating this drum until we are completely disarmed.

#8  Yes, we buy it to do bad things. We buy it to not be a slave. We buy it to be responsible citizens of our Republic, not the feral Mob the Democrats lead. We buy it to safeguard our families and their futures, at the potential cost of our own. Even knowing that cost, we still buy it, learn it, practice with it and enhance the skills we hopefully never need.

I saw a study a while back that indicated that wasn't just the Masshole effect - they pointed to other states like New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania as contributing to this problem (and being a NH native back when it was a red state, I'm calling it a problem).

On International Yoga Day, Ban spotlights importance of healthy living in realizing Global Goals

...boodling on the grand scale...
Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon today urged everyone to embrace healthier choices and lifestyles and to commit to unity with other human beings, regardless of ethnicity, faith, age, gender identity or sexual orientation.
So twist yourself into an improbable position and contemplate your belly button.
"Practicing yoga can also help raise awareness of our role as consumers of the planet's resources and as individuals with a duty to respect and live in peace with our neighbours," Mr. Ban said, marking the second International Day of Yoga, since the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution last year dedicating 21 June to the practice. "All these elements are essential to building a sustainable future of dignity and opportunity for all," he added.

Top U.S. Army general: These 4 nations are the most dangerous to US security
[Business Insider] On June 20, Gen. Mark Milley, the US Army chief of staff, ranked four nations as the most dangerous to US national security: Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

Meanwhile, BOEING just penned massive contract with Iran, one of the largest supporters of state sponsored terrorism in the world.

Congressional 'knee jerk' anti-gun legislation shot down
[Politico] One day after the deadliest U.S. mass shooting in nearly three years, the Senate voted down a pair of gun-control measures that were designed by Democrats to put Republicans on record on the charged issue.

The votes, which came in connection with GOP legislation to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood, marked the first roll calls on the Senate floor this year that would enact tougher restrictions on firearms. And despite a continued push from Democrats and gun-control advocates, as well as scores of fatal mass shootings nationwide -- from churches to community colleges to a center for people with developmental disabilities -- not a single lawmaker changed position from an ambitious gun overhaul effort that failed more than two years ago.

#1  'No gun sales to people on the 'Terror Watch List' seems to be such common sense that people don't want to listen to arguments against it. They refuse to understand that it would provide - as it stands - no protection against abuse and no recourse (or extremely difficult recourse) against errors.
I'm pretty sure the people who were pushing it were quite aware of its problems but figure it's a 'win-win' for them - if it's voted down (as it was) they get to demonize gun nuts for supporting terrorists, and if it's passed they would get to abuse it for all sorts of 'convenient' purposes.

Hillary Clinton most bought, paid for candidate
h/t Instapundit
"Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I’ve ever known in my life." -- Frank Sinatra, as Maj. Bennett Marco

"His brain has not only been washed, as they say ... It has been dry-cleaned." -- Khigh Dhiegh, as Dr. Yen Lo

These lines from the 1962 classic film "The Manchurian Candidate" came to mind after I listened to President Obama’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton.

The president said, "I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office."

Really? She would be equal to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan and himself? Notice President Obama didn’t say she is "more qualified," because that would diminish him, and when it comes to narcissism, Mr. Obama and the Clintons make Donald Trump look like a shrinking violet.

In his effusive praise of Mrs. Clinton, the president did not mention any specific accomplishments that might qualify her for the office. That is because there are none. There is a lot of symbolism, of course, but no substantive results as secretary of state, an unremarkable single term as a senator from New York, and eight years as first lady when, in 1993, she couldn’t get the Clintons’ health care reform legislation through a majority Democratic Congress. There is, however, a long list of dubious and possibly criminal "achievements."

Orlando Shooting: Excellent Piece by Marine Tim Lynch
[Michael Yon] Tim is a retired Marine infantry officer. I spent much time with Tim in various provinces in Afghanistan, such as Nangarhar, Kabul, Kandahar, Helmand, Nimoroz.

Good Lord almighty we went everywhere together, often alone or with just one other man, an ex-Aussie Soldier named Shem.

First time Tim picked me up in Kabul to take me to Jalalabad, Nangarhar, there was a bag beside me in the backseat filled with grenades. I said I'll just help myself to a couple of these.

We were going down roads sometimes passing burning and blown-up, shot up vehicles. IED holes, and people who obviously were Taliban and associates, yet somehow we got away with it. You had to be there to believe it.

I was not advertising this at the time due to the obvious peril, but we both learned a lot about the war which left both of us ahead of the curve when writing about it.

This morning I checked Tim's website and saw that he posted on the Orlando shooting. Our thoughts are parallel on this.

Hollywood doubles down for the Hildebeest
[Wash Times] Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign is about to get another infusion of cash thanks to Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, Leonardo DiCaprio, and their activist allies within the entertainment industry.

Mr. Weinstein is hosting his second fundraiser for the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Monday night in New York City. Academy Award winner Mr. DiCaprio, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Matthew Broderick will serve as co-hosts for the event.

The New York Post, which first teased details of the event June 16, said roughly 50 guests will be in attendance at Mr. Weinstein’s Manhattan home. Donations will benefit the Hillary Victory Fund.

Fashion designer Anna Wintour teamed up with Mr. Weinstein for his first fundraiser for Mrs. Clinton. Attendees at that event were granted a picture with the former secretary of state for a $2,700 donation, the Washington Free Beacon reported Monday.

Mr. Weinstein has also donated at least $250,000 to the Clinton Foundation.

#6  Judging strictly by the TV ads during the California primary, the money is not being used very wisely. The Beest kept running the same ad over and over and over. It featured Morgan Freeman's voice. His voice was soothing and there was soothing music in the background. But he used a whole lot of fancy words to say absolutely nothing. After a few days it was extremely annoying.

Car bomb kills at least six Jordanian border guards
[DW] An attack on the Jordan-Syria border claimed the lives of at least six Jordanian border guards and injured over a dozen others. A statement from Jordan's military Tuesday said, "At 5:30 a.m. a car bomb exploded in the Rukban district opposite the Syrian refugee camp, killing or wounding several Jordanian soldiers."

"Six soldiers have been martyred and 14 others were wounded in the terrorist attack," a Jordanian official said, calling the count a "preliminary toll."

The military said "a booby-trapped car" attacked a berm, which runs along the border. They said several other vehicles involved in the attack have been destroyed. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack was reportedly launched from the Syrian side. It reportedly took place a few hundred meters from the Rukban camp for Syrian refugees, where the borders of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq meet.

Meet the Folckomers
[Charleston Post and Courier] A scuffle over Confederate flags Saturday at The Battery landed two tourists in jail.

The S.C. Secessionist Party was putting on its weekly display of Southern flags. A woman walking by broke two small Confederate flags off a parked truck and ran away with them, according to a Charleston police report. Party founder James Bessenger, 27, took off running after her.

A man stepped in front of Bessenger and kept grabbing him so he couldn't chase the young woman, according to the report. Police were called.

Police identified the woman who broke off the flags as Lydia Folckomer, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y. She told officers she grabbed the flags because they upset her.

The man who grabbed Bessenger was identified as her father, Paul Folckomer, 50, of Brevard, N.C. He told officers he grabbed Bessenger to keep him from chasing his daughter.

The daughter was charged with malicious injury to real property. Her father was charged with simple assault. They spent the night in jail and were released on bail Sunday afternoon.

Former Secret Service Agent Gary Byrne - The Hildebeest's unhinged rage
[Breitbart] Hillary Clinton once threw a Bible at the back of a Secret Service agent's head, part of a pattern of unhinged rage that the now-presumptive Democratic nominee exhibited, as exposed for the first time in former Secret Service agent Gary Byrne's grueling insider account of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Byrne’s forthcoming book Crisis of Character--in which he details how the Clintons operated during his time in the U.S. Secret Service, where he protected the first couple for eight years in the White House in the 1990s. During three of those years, he was posted right outside the Oval Office. The book comes out next week.

"The First Lady had a different sort of liveliness," Byrne writes in an excerpt obtained exclusively by Breitbart News. "She once threw a Bible at an agent on her detail, hitting him in the back of the head. He bluntly let her know it wasn’t acceptable. He told me that story himself."

Byrne goes on to report that for Secret Service agents, being assigned to Hillary Clinton’s detail "was a form of punishment handed down by passive-aggressive middle management."

White House Feigns Ignorance About Orlando Terror Transcript Edits
[Breitbart] Why is the Obama administration hiding the truth about the terrorist 9-1-1 phone calls?

The White House feigned ignorance that President Barack Obama had anything to do with the redaction of the transcripts.

"The decision about the release of the transcripts is one that was made solely by Department of Justice and FBI officials," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said to reporters during the daily press briefing.

He insisted that Obama had no role in the decision to redact the text of the text to distract from the motives of the attacks.

The text of the transcripts used the text [omitted] in the place of the shooter's references to the Islamic faith, being an Islamic soldier and replaced the word "Allah" with the word "God."

Earnest said that the Justice Department and the F.B.I had decided to redact the transcript "consistent with their assessment about the best way to advance the investigation."

He said that he hadn't seen House Speaker Paul Ryan's call for the administration to release the full underrated text so that Americans could have a clear-eyed understanding of the threat posed by radical Islamic terrorists.

#7  F.B.I had decided to redact the transcript "consistent with their assessment about the best way to advance the investigation"

Josh Earnest's statement above is as stupid as the original deliberate deception (redaction/edit).

While the FBI is all sorts of jacked up already on this crime. The local police killed Mateen, not the FBI (one of the local police was shot in the head doing so). The FBI shows up late, after interviewing this guy twice, and further - fails to follow up on the gun store owners report, seizes the 911 tape and not only redact it, but edits (changes Allah to God) the transcript of the tape? I don't buy it - even a first year FBI agent knows that editing a transcript is an intentional deception/lie and will get them fired - it kills an investigation, it does not advance it. It is obvious that DOJ directed this mess.

Ignorance, Incompetence, not buying that either - this was deliberate deception. Lynch should be fired for directing this edit to happen, stupidly propagating it, and for blaming it on the FBI. Same pattern of conduct at DOJ as deliberately deceiving the Judge on Obama's deportation amnesty policy. The head of this fish is rotten.

While there are excellent individual agents and analysts...In regards to the FBI as an institution - I agree with you. When they refuse to learn the language of the threat, do not study the culture of the threat, and do not cultivate the authorities to address it...then they will remain mired in incompetence, ignorance and ineffectiveness...and we will continue to pay the price for this indifference.

#11  "FBI is ignorant & incompetent" - a long tradition of that in the US government, from 1812 when federal authorities couldn't be bothered to notify their military officers on the frontier that war had been declared against Great Britain, to February 1941 when the Martin-Bellinger assessment / prediction of the Dec 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor was consigned to the round file so thoroughly that even modern historians don't mention it.

Britain
How Brussels spends YOUR money as if it grows on trees
h/t Gates of Vienna
A strange atmosphere hangs over Brussels. On the one hand, there is Donald Tusk, President of the European Council (representing all 28 EU governments), warning of Armageddon if Britain votes to leave the European Union on Thursday.

As he told a German interviewer last week: 'I fear Brexit could be the beginning of the destruction of not only the EU but also Western political civilisation in its entirety.'

But you won't hear a squeak on the subject from most people in the vast glass-and-steel bureaucratic palaces across this city. As an EU fromage of great magnitude, Mr Tusk can get away with saying this sort of thing. Lesser Eurocrats are under strict orders to say nothing on the subject, for fear of adding any further heat to the issue. There has even been a ban on using the word 'Brexit' in official communications.

Given the whopping great perks and privileges bestowed on those who work for the European Union, no one is going to step out of line. In any case, most people here still cannot really believe that we pesky Brits really would have the temerity to abandon the Grand Project. But then, if you live in this hermetically sealed bubble -- a world of long lunches, long weekends and retail discounts worth 36 per cent -- your grasp of normality is somewhat distorted.

During a week here in the gilded capital of Europe, I have been amazed by the gulf between this place and the real world.

Just take the wage bill of the 47,000 people who work inside the bubble. Since 2010, it has been British policy to disclose the number of government officials earning more than our Prime Minister, who gets paid just shy of ÂŁ150,000. In Britain, the latest figure stands at 319.

And the equivalent number for the EU? According to documents leaked ahead of the last European elections two years ago, EU tax perks mean that at least 10,000 EU employees are taking home more than David Cameron.

Many are mere middle managers. Among the extra perks are the ÂŁ240 monthly allowance for stay-at-home spouses and the ÂŁ100-a-month allowance per child. On top of that, European taxpayers spend an estimated ÂŁ80 million each year in school fees for Eurocrats' children.

Report: New evidence of rising 'Obamacare' premiums
h/t Gates of Vienna
Premiums for popular low-cost medical plans under the federal health care law are expected to go up an average of 11 percent next year, said a study that reinforced reports of sharp increases around the country in election season.

For consumers, the impact will depend on whether they get government subsidies for their premiums, as well as on their own willingness to switch plans to keep the increases more manageable, said the analysis released Wednesday by the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation.

FBI, DOJ release new, full transcript of Orlando shooter's 911 call
h/t Gates of Vienna
Under pressure from Republican leaders, the Justice Department on Monday afternoon reversed itself and released a full, uncensored transcript of the Orlando terrorist's 911 call on the night of the massacre, calling the morning’s furor over omissions in the document "an unnecessary distraction."

An earlier version of the transcript had deleted the word "Islamic State" and the name of ISIS leader "Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi." Omar Mateen made the 50-second 911 call in which he claimed responsibility for the terror attack and pledged allegiance to Islamic State's leader at 2:35 a.m. The call came just over a half hour into the June 12 slaughter at gay nightclub Pulse.

Massive Cache Of Weapons Of War Found In Near German Mosque
Here's the link to the report on Mr Tipi's website. Tipi is a hessian state MP for Merkel's party.

All of this hasn't been reported in the mainstream media but this verifies that a state MP is indeed reporting this event.

Not sure if/how the application of tinfoil hats and/or grains of salt is advisable.

An arsenal of weapons of radical islamists was excavated in NRW, North Rhine Westphalia. The "Top secret assignment" took one week and brought heavy war arsenal to the surface. This is what Hessian delegate Ismail Tipi (CDU) says.

According to information of the hessian CDU delegate Ismail Tipi a "top secret assignment" of the SEK in North Rhine Westphalia took place. In the cooler room of a vegetable vendor near a mosque, weapons were found and seized. "According to my information at this particular operation, an arsenal with heavy war weaponry was found.

The danger of arming of the fundamentalists and willing to resort to violence salafists in Germany is very high. This was shown clearly by this secret operation", said Tipi on Friday at a press conference.

The Extremism expert also assumes that more weapons stocking took place in other cities. For instance the Hamburg intelligence service for constitutional protection also speaks of a heightened number of supporters of armed jihad.

#5  Interesting in translation...the 'cooler room' is a grocer's walk-in refrigerator. I have no sense for how 'massive' is used as it's root is not found in the original news brief. The room may have been big or the weapon count, many. I do not have a sense that either is accurate.

More interesting is the reporting of this as one of many suspected weapon caches across the country. Consider then that Orlando went out to buy his weapons. Either there are not domestic caches in/near FLA, they were not made available to the OP out of concern for exposure, or Orlando was not a sanctioned member of a cell and while sponsored, acted as an individual. If it can be said that there is, then this is good news.

37 WIA, 9 KIA in Chicago Weekend, Including Teen and Mex Singing Star

[Breitbart] The bloody violence in Chicago took no time off for Father’s Day as the final tally ended with 37 shot and 9 killed. The dead included a 17-year-old, shot with a rifle, and a Mexican man who was on his nation’s version of the TV show The Voice, shot three times in the head.

One of the last people killed during the weekend was a 17-year-old teen shot in front of a Catholic Church with what police claimed was a "high-powered rifle."

The teen was shot by an assailant who drove up next to him and immediately opened fire, leaving "literally dozens of empty shell casings on the street," according to Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy.

Chief Roy said the shooting was likely gang-related.

#1  Pleonasm (pliːənæzəm); Greek: πλεονασμός, pleonasmos, from πλέον, pleon, "more; too much") is the use of more words or parts of words than is necessary or sufficient for clear expression: examples are black darkness, burning fire, or people's democracy. Such redundancy is, by traditional rhetorical criteria, a manifestation of tautology. That being said, people may use a pleonasm for emphasis or because the phrase has already become established in a certain form.

#2  Profiling is a major part of any police work. He looked suspicious so I pulled him over. He was driving a low rider car in Beverly Hills, it will get you pulled over. Driving a low rider truck anywhere in Florida will get you pulled over. It's profiling. So what. The police are charged with looking for something out of the ordinary and investigating it. It's all good.

Fifth Column
Police Probe Afghan-German Airport Worker After Links To Orlando Killer Omar Mateen Uncovered
[Express.co.UK] Omar Mateen had been in touch with a Frankfurt Airport worker denied access to America earlier this year.

The 57-year-old man was from Afghanistan and reportedly wanted to visit mass murderer Omar Mateen at his home in Florida.

American immigration officials denied him the right to enter the country.
In this day and age I'm almost afraid to ask if the officials were disciplined...
Now the FBI are probing Mateen's relationship with the Afghani man after he carried out the massacre at the Pulse gay nightclub, killing 49 people and wounding 53 others.

Frankfurt Airport was the site of an Islamist terror plot in 2011 when an airport post office worker shot and killed two US airmen and wounded two others.

German officials are working with the FBI to determine if Mateen was linked to a wider Isis network of terrorists in Europe.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Send in the Clowns. Oh, They're Here
The folks at Maxon Shooter Supplies and Indoor Range, who claim to be TAH fans, sent us a link to the story about them in the Chicago Sun Times, wherein the Times sent Neil Steinberg, one of their reporters, to write about his experience buying and firing an evil black, scary gun (known in journalistic circles as an assault rifle). Steinberg does the handwringing thing about guns and journalistic integrity thing during his drive to Des Plaines, Illinois to the Maxon "lemonade stand" as the owner described it to me.
I call it the Hobby Store.
"Driving to Maxon Shooter Supplies in Des Plaines on Wednesday to purchase my first assault rifle, I admit, I was nervous. I'd never owned a gun before. And with the horror of Sunday's Orlando massacre still echoing, even the pleasant summer day -- the lush green trees, fluffy white clouds, blue sky -- took on a grim aspect, the sweetness of fragile life flashing by as I headed into the Valley of Death.
Such melodrama! He sounds like a wannabe action writer.
He's almost a Hemingway - our 'Hemingway'.
Earlier, in my editor's office, I had ticked off the reasons for me not to buy a gun: this was a journalistic stunt; done repeatedly; supporting an industry I despise. But as I tell people, I just work here, I don't own the place. And my qualms melted as I dug into the issue."
Such prose!
He needn't have worried, after he filled out the paperwork paid for his Smith & Wesson M & P 15 Sport II there was a waiting period, during which his purchase was rejected by the gun dealer;
Those pesky waiting periods!
"I was looking forward to shooting my new rifle the next day. I've shot guns. It's fun. I was worried though, about having fun with guns in the current environment of outrage and horror. Had I been co-opted by the purchase process? By the friendly staff at Maxon's?
Brainwashed, I was!
"At 5:13 Sarah from Maxon called. They were canceling my sale and refunding my money. No gun for you. I called back. Why? 'I don't have to tell you,' she said."
Neener-neener.
A few hours later, Maxon sent the newspaper a lengthy statement, the key part being: "it was uncovered that Mr. Steinberg has an admitted history of alcohol abuse, and a charge for domestic battery involving his wife."
She deserved it, she sassed me.
Well, I didn't see that coming.
Blindsided, I tells ya!
Of course, Steinburg thinks that's not the reason, he thinks it's some bias against journalists.
Of course he does. Journalists are immune from the laws dontchaknow
Would-be terrorists can buy guns. Insane people can buy guns. But reporters . . . that's a different story. Gun makers avoid publicity because the truth is this: they sell tools of death to frightened people and make a fortune doing so.
The fact I'm a drunken wife-beater has nuttin to do with it! I been wronged! I'm a victim here!
Or maybe the fine folks at Maxon don't like their guns in the hands of mean drunks who beat their wives.

I'm pretty sure that, if the sale had been approved, the headline would have read something like "Local gun dealer sells gun to wife beater" It was probably the editor's intent from the beginning that's why they chose Steinberg in the first place to make the purchase.

From the Maxon Facebook page;

Mr. Steinberg was very aggressive on the phone with Sarah, insisting he was going to write that we denied him because he is a journalist. "Journalist" is not a protected class, BTW. We contacted his editor and said that, while we don't normally provide a reason for a denial, in this case to correct the record before you publish, here's why; we pasted a couple links of press accounts of his past behavior and his admission of same. He's free to believe or disbelieve that's why he was denied, but that *is* why he was denied. There was no "We'll see you in court!!!!" type of language from us; we simply want to set the record straight. That it undermined his thesis and rendered the column incoherent isn't really our problem, is it? Thanks for your support.

Clarification: Steinberg did fill out an ATF 4473. He didn't lie on the form which asks the respondent if they have ever been *convicted* in a court of a domestic violence misdemeanor and, apparently, Steinberg wasn't convicted (even though you or I would have been convicted). He made a big deal about his arrest and his "come to Jesus" moment in the paper and in his book "Drunkard". Because he doesn't have a conviction, he also has a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card.

Steinberg didn't pop hot on the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) check because he doesn't have a conviction, and he didn't lie on his ATF 4473.

Everyone in Chicago knows about his escapades as a drunk and a wife beater because he wrote about it, the staff at Maxon knew about his past and they denied his purchase based on Steinberg's own admissions in his writings about it. The firearms dealer has the final say in whether you get a gun or not and because of Steinberg's local reputation, they decided not to take a chance on him. I hope that answers your questions.

#4  Is that 5:13, or 18:13, because a loser attention whore drunkard betting his reputation on accuracy needs to be quite a bit more sober on his recollection. Say, one paragraph lamenting his obligation of a journalist supporting something he has no belief in, and not more than two periods later stating how excited he would be to fire his new AR-15 assault bazooka with collapsible bayonet grenade lug.

They don't sell guns to alcoholic wife beaters, and so informed his editors. But he has shot guns before and, given that he has a Firearm Owmers ID card, may actually own one or more. Had they sold him the gun, the story might well have been how easily an alcoholic wife beater, who hadn't actually been convicted, could legally buy a weapon.

Joe Biden to target Donald Trump on foreign policy
[LATIMES] Vice President Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...
will step into the campaign fray Monday with a foreign policy address that casts Donald Trump’s approach to the world as antithetical to American values.

Biden’s address to the Center for a New American Security opens as a defense of the B.O. regime’s foreign policy record, one that has "positioned the United States at the forefront of tremendous opportunity," he will say, according to advance excerpts.

But Biden will also target the presumptive Republican nominee, even if not by name, arguing that by turning inward, or seeking "sound-bite solutions in a world defined by complexity," the U.S. could "squander all of our hard-earned progress."

"I’ve never been more optimistic about America’s capacity to lead our world to a more peaceful and prosperous future. But our leadership does not spring from some inherent American magic -- it never has," he plans to say.

"It stems from our willingness to see challenges on the horizon and step forward to meet them first, our ability to lead by example and draw partners to our side. That’s what has always made America great."

Concurrently, you turned your head and allowed Maliki to charge VP Tariq al-Hashemi with murder/and later the killing of Sunni protesters in Ramadi. How did this progress work our for ya? Mr. Biden your "progress" is directly responsible for the chain of events which directly led to the Sunni/ISIS uprising, rise of a Khalifah and establishment of the Caliphate.

Result - Christian genocide, Shia genocide, cold war with the Russians... Mr. Biden - blood is on your hands.

Arafat’s shadowy money man visits Israel — report
An odd incident in Israel.
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian media says Muhammad Rashid arrived with Kurdish delegation, met with Israeli officials and Syrian rebels

Deceased Paleostinian leader Yasser Arafat’s former money man Muhammad Rashid visited Israel on June 12 and held meetings with Israeli officials as well as figures connected to Syrian rebel groups, the official newspaper of the Paleostinian Authority, Al-Hayat al-Jadida, reported.

According to the report, Rashid traveled on a Canadian passport, arrived with a delegation of bigwigs from Iraqi Kurdistan, and stayed at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. During the visit, Rashid, who is a runaway from the PA, where he has been convicted of embezzlement, was said to have met with Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and an IDF intelligence officer.

British Sniper Takes Out Two ISIS Bombers With One Shot, Saving Hundreds Of Lives
[DAILYCALLER] A British Special Air Service (SAS) sniper took out two Islamic State bombers with a single shot, saving hundreds of lives in the process.

The SAS sniper took his shot from just over half a mile away, killing the terrorist driver in a split second.

But the story doesn’t end there. The bullet passed through the driver’s head and also hit his accomplice in the neck — an incredible feat, given these two targets were moving. The shot was one of the best in SAS history, according to an SAS source who spoke with the Daily Star Sunday.

“If the sniper had missed a lot of people would have lost their lives,” the SAS source said.

The teen, whose name was withheld because of his age, was arrested for attacking Mohammed Rasheed Khan, 59, with two friends as the man left his Jamaica Ave. mosque near 205th St. in Hollis on June 1.

The boy admitted to Sherlocks that one of his friends suggested they play the "knockout game" -- a barbaric practice of trying to knock a random person unconscious with one punch, police said.

That's when the trio spotted Khan on his bicycle riding away from the Center for Islamic Studies.

California Democrat Pleads Guilty to Bribery and Corruption
[BREITBART] Former Democratic Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, State Senator Ron Calderon has admitted that he took tens of thousands of dollars in bribes for legislative action as he submits a guilty plea to a federal corruption charge. Calderon faced a 24-count indictment before agreeing to the terms of the plea deal.

The United States Department of Justice details:

In the plea agreement, Ron Calderon admits accepting bribe payments from the owner of a Long Beach hospital who wanted a law to remain in effect so he could continue to reap millions of dollars in illicit profits from a separate fraud scheme and from undercover FBI agents who were posing as independent filmmakers who wanted changes to California’s Film Tax Credit program.

Israel seizes wet suits believed to be heading to Hamas
[IsraelTimes] Scuba gear thought planned for sea-borne attack hidden in shipment of sporting goods sent by Paleostinian Authority

Israeli border agents confiscated a shipment of wet suits they suspected of being en route to Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, in the Gazoo Strip to be used for a seaborne attack on Israel, the Defense Ministry said Monday.

Bearing uncanny resemblance to an incident last year, the wet suits were hidden in a shipment of sportswear coming in to the coastal enclave from the Paleostinian Authority through the Kerem Shalom Crossing, the ministry said.

"The shipment was seized and an investigation has been opened to locate those involved," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

Wet suits require a special permit to be imported into the Gazoo Strip, lest they wind up in the hands of Hamas’s naval commando unit.

During the 2014 Gazoo war, a team of five Hamas frogmen entered Israel from the shore and approached a nearby Jewish community before they were spotted and taken out by an attack helicopter.

Last month, Israeli authorities foiled an attempt to smuggle metal pipes and motors into the Gazoo Strip, which could have been used for building rockets and tunnels, the Defense Ministry said at the time.

In that case as well, the illicit materials were "camouflaged," stuck in alongside "textiles and jewelry."

This practice of hiding illegal goods among approved products has become the go-to method for smugglers. Earlier this year, electrodes were discovered hidden in butter from a Ramallah factory.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran 'foils plot by Sunni militants to bomb Tehran'
The authorities in Iran have thwarted a plot by Sunni militants to bomb targets in the capital Tehran and other cities, the intelligence ministry says.

The ministry said members of an "anti-Islamic terrorist takfiri group" had been arrested and explosives seized. The intelligence ministry gave no further details about the suspects.

"Takfiri" is a term used by officials in Shia Iran to describe Sunni extremists who declare other Muslims as apostates deserving of death.

Iran is currently helping both the Syrian and Iraqi governments battle the jihadist group, Islamic State (IS), which considers Shia to be infidels for their veneration of the Prophet Muhammad's family and other beliefs and practices.

Militants claiming to be defending the Sunni minority community in south-eastern Iran have also carried out a number of attacks against the state in recent years.

The intelligence ministry said the investigation by its agents - whom it described as "Unnamed Soldiers of the Lord of Ages" - was continuing "inside and outside" Iran.

"Updated information will be released to the great Iranian nation as soon as the proper conditions are established," it added.

The Fars news agency cited the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, as saying the bomb attacks had been planned for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Last month, Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said 20 terrorist groups that had planned to carry out bomb attacks and cause insecurity had been dismantled.

Once upon a time they were Muslims like everyone else, but then Allah changd his mind, and suddenly Ahmadis were always intended for target practice.
[DAWN] A 50-year-old homeopathic doctor, belonging to the Ahmadi community, was rubbed out in his clinic in the Abul Hasan Isphani area of the metropolis on Monday evening.

It is the second such attack in the same vicinity within a month, police and a community front man said.

"Dr Chaudry Abdul Khaleeq was bumped off in an attack on his clinic," confirmed Malir SSP Rao Anwar.

The police official added the clinic was located in the slum area of Sikander Goth, in the limits of Sachal cop shoppe.

"He sustained a single bullet wound to his head," added Anwar.

There was no electricity in the area at the time of the attack. The officer was of the opinion that it was a assassination.

A Jamaat Ahmadiyya spokesperson confirmed while talking to Dawn that the dear departed belonged to their community.

"This is the second attack on our community in the same area," the spokesperson added.

The apprehended myrmidon commander has been identified as Abu Ukasha alias Hanzullah of Pakistain. One grenade and Rs 38,000 cash were recovered from his possession.

The myrmidon commander had infiltrated into Kashmire in November-December last year and was mostly operating form Handwara and Lolab forests. The official termed the arrest of the Pak myrmidon as a big success.

Sources said that two of his associates fled when police arrested the myrmidon commander from the market. One among them is believed to be local and another a foreigner.

Police accompanied by army later conducted an operation in Nagbal and Sheikh Nard forest area of Sogam during which a gunbattle broke out as the myrmidon fired at police and army joint party.

Security forces trapped one of Abu Ukasha’s associate, Abu Bakar who was also in the market at the time of his arrest but fled away.

The firing at Nagbal forest area continued for about an hour and it has stopped now. Security forces have cordoned whole area and they will conduct the searches in the morning. They, however, believed that the myrmidon has been killed but will only confirm when his body is recovered.

In the meantime, army and Police launched a massive operation in North Kashmire’s Bandipora district after they heard few gun shots form Sumlar forest area of the district this evening.

An army patrol had gone to the Sumlar forest area and they were fired at from a distance by myrmidons. More troops and police was rushed to the area and a massive operation has been launched in the forest area.

Security forces had launched an operation against a heavily armed 6 member myrmidon group belonging to LeT last week in Bandipora forests after the group was spotted in the area.

Army’s 14, 27 RR, 7-para commandos and Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmire Police had launched a massive search operation in Chuntmulla, Kudara, Sirinder, Kutapathri and Gabipathri areas of Bandipora.

Hakimullah’s brother, uncle among 6 surrender
[NATION.PK] Former Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) chief Hakimullah Mehsud’s brother and uncle are among six key members of the Lion of Islam group who have surrendered to the security forces in Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
, officials said on Sunday.

"Ejaz Mehsud and Khair Muhammad Mehsud, uncle of Hakimullah, handed themselves to authorities late Saturday," an official said.

Both men surrendered at Lower Kurram’s Shaheedanu Dand, one of the three crossing points between Kurram and Afghanistan.

However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
the official refused to comment on whether the two men crossed into Pakistain from Afghanistan or had been hiding on the Pak side of the border. Sources further said that at least four TTP commanders also surrendered to authorities and there was a possibility that more Taliban members could surrender in a couple of days. "All the surrendered men have been shifted to security forces’ fort in Tull area," a source said.

Some sources say Hakeemullah’s relatives may have entered into Pakistain as the authorities opened the crossing with Afghanistan on Saturday after days of festivities on the Torkham border.

The group has not yet commented on the development.

Taliban faced a serious rift after the death of Hakimullah and some Taliban sources had earlier said nearly 200 had been killed in festivities between the supporters of rival commanders Sheharyar Mehsud and Khan Said alias Sajna.

Hakimullah, who was in his thirties, had been killed in a US drone strike in North Wazoo Agency in November 2013. He was buried at an unknown location a day later.

He had succeeded his mentor, Baitullah Mehsud, who was killed in a US drone strike in August 2009. Hakimullah Mehsud, the young, ferocious and vengeful chief of TTP had survived at least two US drone strikes in the past. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
on November 1, 2013, his luck ran out.

Kabul suicide bombing kills 14
[CNN] A jacket wallah struck in the Afghan capital early Monday morning, targeting a bus full of foreign security contractors.

At least 14 people were killed and eight others maimed, said Sediq Seddiqi, front man for Afghanistan's Interior Ministry.

The majority of the victims were citizens of Nepal, he added.

The Canadian embassy confirmed that the victims worked for a security company that provided services to the Canadian Embassy, the embassy said in a tweet on its official Twitter account.

"Our thoughts with families and friends of victims," the tweet said.

Trevor Noah explains why the terrorist list gun ban is actually pretty scary
[VOX] The Daily Show's Trevor Noah thinks that banning suspected terrorists from buying guns may not be that good of an idea, even if it sounds like it is.

In the wake of the recent Orlando massacre, Sen. Chris Murphy and other Democratic lawmakers filibustered for 15 hours in order to force a vote on a new gun bill. If passed, the bill would give the government broad authority to block the sale of guns to individuals investigated for terrorist activity up to five years before the attempted purchase. The bill is widely backed by Senate Democrats, and the terrorist list ban has previously garnered support from President Obama.

But perhaps it isn't so cut and dried, Noah points out.

Last night, in a segment about the Senate filibuster, he explained why the idea is actually pretty troubling. "It sounds like something that shouldn't be up for discussion," he said. "But it's not as formal as it sounds. It' a secret list that anyone could be put on at any time."

Noah acknowledged that though the legislation might seem comforting now, we might want to think twice before consenting to such a large expansion of governmental discretionary power. His fears may be well-grounded. According to watch list guidelines published in the Intercept in 2014, adding a person's name to the list requires neither "concrete facts" nor "irrefutable evidence."

Russian Mistral ready for sea trials
You can see her vitals here. Both ships are named after Order of Nakhimov 1st Class recipients from WWII. The Order of Nakhimov 1st Class is a Russian award for military leadership to be bestowed on naval officers. 79 were awarded the Order of Nakhimov 1st Class during WWII.

The Ivan Gren (Project 11711) large landing ship has arrived the port of Baltiysk for qualifications and training (landing operations, helicopters training etc) before it will join to the Russian Northern Fleet (till the end of 2016).

The ship is built in Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. The vessel have a displacement of 5,000 tons and is able to carry up to 13 main battle tanks or 36 armoured personnel carriers or 300 marines. The Ivan Gren-class ship also carries two military helicopters Kamov Ka-27, developed for ferrying and anti-submarine warfare. The Ivan Gren is armed by six 30mm radar-guided automatic guns.

It has modern cranes for loading equipment, which also can be loaded on the ship through the bow ramp.

Some media call the Ivan Gren-class vessel: ‘Russian Misral‘ because it has been developed to replace the two Mistral-class amphibious assault ships that had been built for Russia by France but wasn’t delivered because of “Russian involvement” into the crisis in Ukraine.

In 2015, another Project 11711 large landing ship, the Pyotr Morgunov, was laid down at the Kaliningrad-based Yantar shipyard. It’s planned to be transfered to the Russian Navy in 2018. The landing ship will be allegedly armed with a 76-mm naval gun, two 30-mm AK-630 anti aircraft mounts and multiple artillery rocket systems.

New Benghazi militant unit issues Ajdabiya warning
The so-called “Benghazi Defence Brigades” (BDB) have warned villages and towns between Ajdabiya and Benghazi not to get involved in the fighting or likewise stand in their way towards Benghazi, otherwise they will be destroyed.

Claiming that they are fighting under the authority of Sadiq Ghariani and the Dar Al-Ifta in Tripoli, the BDB also today denied that they had been forced to retreat by units of the Libyan National Army (LNA), claiming instead they were still firmly in control of areas of that they had taken yesterday.
"Lies! All lies!"
However, despite their claims and reports that they had managed to capture a tank, four armoured vehicles and ammunition from the LNA, the Libya Herald has been told that they were forced out of the centre of Ajdabiya and are now south of the town.
They're just more selective in the towns they occupy...
This newspaper had also been informed that a number of Libyans from Tripoli have joined the unit. It is also reported that four LNA soldiers were killed today in fighting with the unit.

However, nothing has been confirmed.

Record 65.3 million people displaced, often face barriers, says UNHCR
A record 65.3 million people were uprooted worldwide last year, many of them fleeing wars only to face walls, tougher laws and xenophobia as they reach borders, the United Nations refugee agency said on June 20 for the occasion of the World Refugee Day.
I've said it before and I say it again: the best place on the planet for Syrian refugees is in Syria. The best place for Libyan refugees is Libya. It's their home, their land, their culture, their faith. It would be far smarter for the West to set up displacement camps in these countries, protect them by any means necessary, and let the hard boys fight it out. Once they're done (and we could help with the killing of hard boys) then we could send all the good people back to their villages and cities.

But moving them to Germany? Norway? Minnesota? That doesn't make a bit of sense. They don't particularly like us Westerners, they don't particularly fit in, they don't have the language or training to get jobs, and so they'll not do well. Their kids will be radicalized, and we'll have problems.

Syrian regulars recapture oilfield near Raqqa
[ARA News] QAMISHLO – Subsequent to fierce clashes with militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), the Syrian regime’s army forces on Monday recaptured the Thawra gas field in the northeastern Raqqa province.

The Thawra gas field, located in the western countryside of Raqqa, has been under ISIS control for more than two years.

“The army has expelled Daesh [ISIS] terrorists from the al-Thawra gas field,” Syrian army officer Haider Hammoud confirmed in an interview with ARA News.

“The group has suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment before retreating from the field,” he said.

Gas and oil facilities are deemed a main financial resource for ISIS, especially in the group’s de facto capital of Raqqa.

In the meantime, the Syrian regime’s troops continued their advance towards the Tabqa airbase west of Raqqa, supported by a Russian air cover.

“For us Tabqa airbase is a main target in our military campaign in Raqqa,” the official told ARA News.

Haider added that the Russian air force has played a major role in the army’s progress in the western countryside of Raqqa.

“We are only 8km away from the airbase. The liberation of Tabqa will come soon,” he said.

No bail for Brit Michael Sandford, planned to kill Donald Trump in Las Vegas
[CBC.CA] Sandford, who lived on East Coast, was jugged June 18 in Las Vegas

A British man accused of trying to take a police officer's gun and kill Donald Trump during a weekend rally in Las Vegas will not be released on bail.

Public defender Heather Fraley said Sandford appeared to be competent and hadn't been diagnosed with a mental illness but has autism and previously attempted suicide. He was living out of his car, didn't have a job and was in the country illegally after overstaying a visa.
Federal Magistrate Judge George Foley said at a hearing Monday that Michael Steven Sandford, 20, was a potential danger to the community and a flight risk. Sandford, who wore leg irons and appeared to tremble during the court hearing, is charged with an act of violence on restricted grounds and was assigned a federal public defender.

He has not entered a plea.

Public defender Heather Fraley said Sandford appeared to be competent and hadn't been diagnosed with a mental illness but has autism and previously attempted suicide. He was living out of his car, didn't have a job and was in the country illegally after overstaying a visa.

His mother told court researchers that he was treated for obsessive compulsive disorder and anorexia when he was younger, and that he once escaped a hospital in England, according to the public defender.

Fraley argued that Sandford should go to a halfway house because he didn't have a criminal history,
...but now he tried to kill a presidential candidate, which changes things.
but the judge said he should stay in detention ahead of a July 5 court date.

Secret Service agents said Sandford went to a Trump rally on Saturday at the Treasure Island Casino and approached a Las Vegas police officer to say he wanted an autograph from Trump. The criminal complaint said Sandford was incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
after grabbing the handle of an officer's gun in an attempt to remove it from a holster.

Reportedly given lessons at shooting range
Agents said Sandford told them he had been in the U.S. for about a year and a half,
How did he eat and put gas in his car if he had no job? And how did a seventeen year old Aspie with anxiety problems manage to fly to America on his own?
We'll see if our investigators are serious by whether they follow the money...
lived in Hoboken, N.J., and drove to the San Bernardino, Calif., area before coming to Las Vegas on June 16.

Sandford told officers he had been planning an liquidation for about a year
...a long time to plan such a thing...
and was convinced he would die in the attempt. He said he also reserved a ticket for a Trump rally in Phoenix, scheduled for later in the day, as a backup plan.

He told authorities that he went to the Battlefield Vegas shooting range the day before the rally and fired 20 rounds from a 9mm Glock pistol to learn how to use it.
No PTSD? How on earth did he manage that?
Police detectives who visited the range spoke with an employee who confirmed that he provided Sandford shooting lessons, according to the complaint signed by Secret Service Special Agent Joseph Hall.

About 1,500 people attended the Las Vegas rally, which was held in the Mystere Theater inside the casino. Attendees had to pass through metal detectors manned by Secret Service, police and casino security officials.
The Telegraph adds:
Sandford appeared in court on Monday to face a charge of "an act of violence on restricted grounds", and faces more than 10 years in prison and a $250,000 (£170,000) fine if convicted.

Kurds begin recruitment drive in Kobane
Video report at the link
KOBANE – In an unprecedented step on Monday 160 civilians were conscripted in Syria’s Kurdish city of Kobane for military service after ratifying the law of self defence duty in June beginning this month.

The new recruits will be trained at the martyr Kendal Efrin camp for 45 days by the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and then serve for 9 months.

“The first group they take is just maybe 100 people,” said Idris Nasan, a former official in the Kobane administration. “They will serve 9 months and after that they are free to join the YPG or go home,” he told ARA News.

“They will not be used to fight ISIS, but will be used inside the city of Kobane and the nearby villages to replace some fighters at checkpoints. The YPG need more fighters for the places they liberate,” Nasan added.

However, some civilians in Kobane seem very critical of the conscription law introduced by the Self-Administration, suggesting the city has suffered too much from ISIS attacks, and a massacre carried out by ISIS in June 2015 that killed more than 233 civilians.

But others say that this massacre exactly shows the necessity of the service.

“You cannot send people to fight by force, people should have the right to choose,” Mohammed, a 25-year-old citizen of Kobane, told ARA News. “They should do it like in Iraq like the Peshmerga forces, if they want they can fight, if they don’t want they don’t fight,” he said.

Some youth have tried to escape to Turkey to avoid the service.

However, Ibrahim Kurdo, the head of foreign relations in Kobane administration said that the self defence duty “is not conscription”.

“We have been under threat for five years, and people realize that this self defence service was created for them to be able to defend themselves,” Kurdo told ARA News. “These new fighters will not fight in the frontlines, they are behind the frontlines,” he said.

“It’s a natural right to defend yourselves, if there is no protection, people will be eliminated and finished,” he added.

Philippine colonel celebrating Father's Day gunned down
[Gulf Today] Motorcycle-riding gunmen shot and killed a Philippine Army colonel in front of his house while he celebrated Father's Day with his family in Zamboanga City. Police chief Luisito Magnaye identified the victim as Cristobal Julian Perez, the personnel head of the army's First Infantry Division based in the town of Lubanga, Zamboanga del Sur.

Magnaye said one of two motorcycle-riding gunmen gunned Perez down outside his house in a village in Zamboanga City late on Sunday night. He said Perez was a veteran in the anti-terror campaign that led in the killing of of Malaysian bomb expert Mohammad Najib Huesein alias Abu Sabas in Basilan in 2015. At that time, Perez was the battalion commander assigned to Basilan to rid the island province of the Abu Sayyaf and other terrorist groups.

Magnaye said that Perez went home to celebrate Father's Day with his wife and their three children on Sunday. Shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday, his wife told the police that Perez left the house after receiving a telephone call from an unidentified person. While conversing with the suspected gunman, shots suddenly rang out, based on the testimony of the victim's widow.

No deal with Comoros to take Kuwait stateless: Minister
[Al Ahram] Kuwait's foreign minister said Monday that a deal to grant thousands of stateless people in the Gulf emirate Comoran nationality had not been struck despite recent reports.

Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah, in comments published in the Al-Qabas daily newspaper, denied rumours circulating in Kuwaiti media on the agreement.

"If we sign an agreement with any country, the foreign ministry is obliged... to complete the necessary legal procedures in accordance with the constitution," the minister said.

Comoran External Affairs Minister Abdulkarim Mohammed said in Kuwait last month that his country was ready to consider taking thousands of stateless people denied citizenship there.

Local media in Kuwait recently suggested that a deal was in the works and reported scams involving large sums charged for assistance in obtaining Comoran citizenship.

More than 110,000 stateless people, locally known as bidoons, have been living in Kuwait for decades claiming the right to citizenship in the oil-rich emirate and the generous welfare benefits that accompany it.

But the government describes them as "illegal residents" and says only 34,000 qualify for consideration for citizenship.

Impoverished Comoros consists of three islands in the Indian Ocean with a population of just under 800,000 people, nearly all of them Sunni Moslems.

Despite the country's distance from the Middle East and North Africa, it is a member of the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
as well as the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Several years ago, Comoros offered thousands of bidoons in the United Arab Emirates citizenship in exchange for generous aid packages in a deal similar to the Kuwait proposal.

'Hindu extremists organisations the biggest hurdle in Pak-India peace'
[DAWN] Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan
...Currently the Interior Minister of Pakistain. He is the senior leader of the Pak Moslem League (N) and a close aide to Nawaz Uncle Fester Sharif. He is noted for his vocal anti-American railing in the National Assembly. However (comma) Khan told the U.S. ambassador that he was in fact pro-American but he and the PML-N would have to be critical of US actions in order to remain publicly credible. Khan cited his wife and children's US citizenship as proof, which means he's lying to one side or the other and probably both. He wears a wig, but you probably guessed that. since hair doesn't grow naturally in that shape or texture...
on Monday termed Hindu faceless myrmidons organizations the biggest hurdle in Pak-India peace dialogue.

"In our eyes, the biggest hurdle is Hindu Death Eater organizations and their influence and relations with the current government," said Nisar.

The interior minister also termed Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s statement regarding Pak-India ties as ’surprising’.

"If the Indian government is serious about mending ties with Pakistain, than they should declare exactly what forces do not want better ties between the two countries," said Nisar in a statement released by the interior ministry.

Nisar also stated that the prime minister’s good relations with any other head of state are linked to our national interest.

"The Indian minister should not take it as the PM’s personal interest," he elaborated.

"Indian seriousness over the issue can be gauged by Prime Minister Modi’s speech to the US Congress."

Pak and Indian foreign secretaries were scheduled to meet to discuss modalities regarding the Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue agreed upon during Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj's visit to Islamabad for the Heart of Asia conference in December.

The Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue stalled following the attack on Indian Air Force's Pathankot base.

The dialogue was to take on matters related to peace and security, Jammu and Kashmire, Siachen, Sir Creek, Wullar Barrage, Tulbul Navigation Project, economic and commercial cooperation, counter-terrorism, narcotics control and humanitarian issues, people to people exchanges and religious tourism.

Bahrain Strips Nationality From Top Shiite Cleric
[ABCNEWS.GO] Bahrain's government on Monday stripped a leading Shiite holy man of his nationality, a move that brought hundreds of protesters into the streets and prompted warnings of unrest.

The Bahrain News Agency quoted the Interior Ministry as saying that Sheikh Isa Qassim had played a key role in creating an bully boy sectarian atmosphere and had formed groups that "follow foreign religious ideologies and political entities," an apparent reference to Shiite-majority Iran.

The move was welcomed by Bahrain's Sunni-led allies but condemned by Shiites, and could serve as another flashpoint for regional sectarian tensions stoked by the rivalry between Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Iran.

After the decision was announced, several hundred of Qassim's supporters gathered outside of his house in the mostly Shiite village of Diraz, carrying posters and chanting religious slogans. Sayed al-Wadaei, director of advocacy at the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy, said in a statement that the decision will escalate tensions and may lead to violence.

The tiny island nation off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula has been in turmoil since a 2011 uprising backed by majority Shiites demanding greater rights from the Sunni-led monarchy. Bahrain crushed the protests with the help of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Sunni allies suspicious of Iran and opposed to growing Shiite influence in the region.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards commander says Bahrain will ‘pay price’ for insulting Shia cleric

[Al Ahram] The commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned Bahrain's government of armed struggle, after the Gulf kingdom stripped the spiritual leader of its Shia Moslem majority of his citizenship.

"The Al Khalifa (rulers of Bahrain) surely know their aggression against Sheikh Isa Qassim is a red line that crossing it would set Bahrain and the whole region on fire, and it would leave no choice for people but to resort to armed resistance," said Qasem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force, the elite special forces arm of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, in a statement published by Fars news agency.

"Al Khalifa will definitely pay the price for that and their bloodthirsty regime will be toppled," he said.

India-Pakistan
The end of Pakistan's double-games in Afghanistan
[AlJazeera] Julian Huxley once wrote that "a nation is a society united by a common error as to its origins and a common aversion to its neighbours". If there is any truth to Huxley's remark, the recent bloody border clashes between the Afghan and Pakistani military forces illustrate the common aversion of the Afghans towards their antagonistic eastern neighbours, Pakistan.

The incident, which left three border guards and two children dead on the Afghan side of the Torkham crossing in eastern Afghanistan, stirred anger throughout the country. Transcending internal differences, Afghans poured into streets in protest and some began marching towards Torkham to render support to the Afghan National Army. A video clip has gone viral on the social media, showing a group of men, claiming to belong to the Taliban forces, declaring war on Pakistan and urging others to join in defending Afghanistan's honour and territorial integrity.

Yet others think that Pakistan was testing the waters and was trying to take advantage of what it perceived as a vulnerable moment in Afghanistan. A year that has been marked with the highest military and civilian casualty figures and increased political discord in Kabul would probably be an opportune time to settle the disputed border issue. In either case, Pakistan's calculus proved wrong. The seemingly disarrayed, multiethnic Afghan nation came together and showed a common aversion to their aggressive neighbour.

Beyond a show of unity in the face of foreign aggression, however, the phenomenon signals a wider shift of dynamics in the two neighbours' historically thorny relationship. The majority of Afghans believe that since the days of the Afghan resistance against the Soviet invasion in the 1980s, Pakistan has been playing a ruthless game of manipulation with both the Afghans and their largest benefactor, the US.

Some argue that Pakistan's interference in Afghan's internal affairs is driven by its insecurity about the Durand Line, the disputed border demarcation upon which the Torkham crossing sits. As soon as Kabul accepts it as the official dividing line, the argument goes, Pakistan will stop its meddling.

Pakistan's ambitions, however, are greater. Their doctrine of gaining "strategic depth" in Afghanistan, which is justified by their fear of an attack from India, is one of the reasons for Islamabad's relentless efforts to install a puppet government in Kabul. The ISI intelligence agency's grossly misguided Taliban project eventually gave birth to various groups of Pakistani Taliban, the survival of al-Qaeda and the harbouring of various Central Asian and Chinese radical groups.

But Pakistan could not have become a godfather of sorts to most of the world's terrorist organisations had it not been for the puzzling acquiescence, over the past 15 years, of the United States. Whether it was a case of prolonged underestimation, a strong and generous Pakistani lobby in Washington, or simply a chaotic AfPak strategy - or lack thereof - the US did not challenge Pakistan's behaviour in any serious and consistent manner. Since 2002, the average annual US aid to Pakistan has been roughly $2bn. In 2010 alone, Pakistan received about $4.5bn in military and development aid from the US. Yet, public opinion polls in Pakistan show that the majority of Pakistanis view the US as an enemy.

But, finally this spring, American policy-makers felt the fatigue from Islamabad's double games. In March, the US Congress began to voice doubts about the continuation of the flow of US aid to Pakistan. Congress passed a bill imposing strict conditions on a $450m aid package to Pakistan and opposed the financing of eight F-16 jet fighters that would be granted to Pakistan through the Foreign Military Financing scheme.

Other disconcerting events of late include the US shift of policy, indicating the end of favouritism to Pakistan, and the opening of Chabahar port, a collaboration of Iran, India and Afghanistan that could isolate Pakistan in regional trade activities.

The Afghans' reaction to the recent border incident represents the culmination of over three decades of frustration with Pakistani malfeasance. They have fought the British and Soviet empires against all odds. If pressured and humiliated further, the Afghans might take on Pakistan.

While the killing of the former Taliban leader, Mulla Mansour, the imposition of conditions on aid to Pakistan and the expansion of military role in Afghanistan are positive signals in the US policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, staying the course will be the determining factor in changing Pakistan's behaviour.

2nd ISIS counterattack at Manbij fails
Video report at the link
MANBIJ – The Manbij Military Council said on Monday that the Islamic State group (ISIS) tried to break the siege on Manbij city, by attacking the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) from another frontline, military sources reported.

ISIS fighters on Monday morning attacked forces of the SDF from the side of al-Bab, Jarabulus and the village of Arima. The clashes continued until the afternoon, and were repelled by the SDF forces, costing ISIS many losses in lives and material.

Speaking to ARA News, Heval Shiyar, a local commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said that al-Bab is the only city from where ISIS can operate freely and reach the Turkish border from Raqqa.

The operation to capture Manbij city has been slowed down in an attempt by the SDF troops to avoid civilians casualties.

“We can enter the city of Manbij easily, but the only obstacle for us is civilians. We have helped 7,000 to 8,000 people to escape the city,” Shiyar told ARA News on the Manbij frontlines. “That’s why the operation goes slowly towards the city.”

“We have information from local sources that the city is full of civilians, that’s why any movement will hurt them,” he added.

So far, SDF fighters have entered the suburbs near the western entrance of Manbij, and the fighting is continuing.

According to the US-led coalition, they have carried out 10 air strikes on 19 June, destroying six ISIS tactical units and five ISIS fighting positions.

“Manbij will be a big test. It will be one of the most strategic blows to ISIL [ISIS] yet because it is their hub of foreign fighters,” American anti-ISIS envoy Brett McGurk said last week.

“It is their main kind of access route from Raqqa. And so I suspect they will fight for it. But we feel pretty good about the plan — not only the military plan, but importantly the post-ISIL plan,” the envoy added.

Iraq
Kirkuk’s largest faction officially rejects bid for semi-independent region
[RUDAW.NET] In an expected development, the largest political bloc in Kirkuk’s provincial council rejected on Sunday efforts to establish a semi-independent region in Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
voting in favor of a reintegration with the Kurdistan region.

The Brotherhood bloc, with 26 seats of the 41-seat provincial council, officially announced its opposition to the proposal, originally put forward by Kirkuk’s Kurdish governor Najmadin Karim.

Karim has said the registered voters of the disputed province will have three options at the long anticipated referendum; staying with the Iraqi government, reintegration with the Kurdistan region or simply becoming a semi-independent region.

According to the Iraqi constitution a province can become a semi-independent region if it wins two-third of the votes at the provincial council even without a public vote.

"Supporters of a semi-independent region now can only hope for a referendum which could be called for when they have the signed support of at least 10 percent of the registered voters within two months," said Bokan Abdulla, a legal scholar in Kirkuk.

But the voter consent for a referendum will unlikely to be needed as the Kurdistan region is up for a public vote, most probably before the end of this year, in which also residents in Kirkuk will have the opportunity to make their voice heard.

"We are committed to the constitution article 140 and returning to the Kurdistan region," said Muhammad Kamal, a veteran member of the provincial council in Kirkuk addressing a presser. The constitutional article 140 addresses the so-called disputed territories across Iraq.

Though roughly over half of Kirkuk’s population currently consists of Kurds, the Turkmen and Arab communities are relatively sizeable in the disputed city, which ultimately makes their vote crucial to any referendum.

1,100km trench built alongside Pak-Afghan border in Balochistan
[NATION.PK] After about three years of constant efforts, Pakistan has ultimately completed the construction of a massive trench in Balochistan alongside its porous border with Afghanistan to keep separatists, smugglers and militants from sneaking into the country.
Flood it and bring in the alligators...
“Excavation work on several-hundred-kilometre-long trench on Chaman-Kandhar border has been completed,” Deputy Commissioner Chaman Khuda-e-Dad Aga told media.

The strategic project of 1,100-kilometre-long trench with the cost of Rs14 billion was initiated along Pak-Afghan border in Balochistan by Frontier Corps in 2013.

The 11-foot-deep and 14-foot-wide ditch on the entire stretch of the border is contributing in efforts by the security forces to have a proper border management, an official of the provincial Home Department said.

In the next phase, the project will be extended to the entire over 2,400-kilometre-long border and after its completion, travel between the two countries will only be allowed through officially-designated crossing points.

The FC, at the beginning of the project, had maintained that the trench would “not only help in effectively controlling the movement of drugs, arms and ammunition smugglers but will also help in stopping the intrusion of terrorists and illegal immigrants”.

“Proper management on all of our international borders is an essential need for a peaceful Pakistan,” Balochistan government’s spokesperson Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar said. “In accordance with our laws, we are making our efforts to discipline cross-border travelling withAfghanistan and other countries.”

Egypt rights campaigner Mina Thabet to be released as court rejects prosecution’s appeal
[Al Ahram] A Cairo court rejected on Monday an appeal by Egypt’s prosecution on rights campaigner Mina Thabet’s release order, confirming that he will be let out of jail on EGP 10,000 bail.

The activist is being investigated, among other charges, on accusations of inciting protests against redrawing Egyptian-Saudi maritime borders, inciting violence to overthrow the regime and change the constitution, inciting attacks on cop shoppes, joining a terrorist organization and disturbing social peace.

Thabet, who is the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms' minorities and marginalised groups programme director, was locked away

'Jesus's wife' papyrus is likely a fake, Harvard professor now says
[Al Ahram] A Harvard professor who caused a huge splash when she unveiled a small fragment of papyrus that she said referred to Jesus being married now says it's likely a forgery.

Harvard Divinity School professor Karen King presented the piece of papyrus in Rome in 2012. The fragment, written in Coptic, includes the phrase, "Jesus said to them, My wife."

Right from the beginning, it sparked controversy and debate among scholars. Doubts about its authenticity were raised almost immediately.

King said it is more likely than not that the fragment is a modern forgery. She cited an investigative article published last week on the website of The Atlantic magazine that raised questions about the owner of papyrus, Florida businessman Walter Fritz. The Atlantic also was the first to report her concession that the papyrus is likely a fake.

"If you ask me today which direction am I leaning more toward -- ancient text or a modern forgery -- based on this new evidence, I'm leaning toward modern forgery," King told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

The Atlantic found inconsistencies in Fritz's story about how he came to acquire the papyrus and in a document he gave to King purporting to authenticate it.

"This evidence does make a difference in judging whether it was a forgery or not, and it pushes the evidence toward it being a forgery," King said.

A valid telephone number could not be found for Fritz. In an email sent to the AP on Monday, Fritz included a letter he sent to The Atlantic in which he denied forging, altering or manipulating the papyrus or its inscription.

Mark Goodacre, a professor of religious studies at Duke University, said doubts about the fragment were raised within hours of King showing the text at a conference in Rome.

"When you show something like that to people who spend their entire lives staring at these things, a lot of them could straightaway tell there was something fishy about it," Goodacre said.

He said he credits King with having "a lot of guts" to acknowledge that she was likely duped.

King said she has always maintained that the fragment wasn't evidence about whether Jesus was married.

"It's at most a part of the early Christian story about should Christians marry, and so on and so forth," she said.

“The majority of those arrested by ISIS militants on Monday were Kurdish civilians,” member of the Shahba documentation centre Muhammad Kalo told ARA News.

Also, the extremist group executed on Monday 12 civilians for trying to escape the ISIS-held villages in Jarablus countryside.

“They were shot dead for trying to escape before ISIS captured them,” Kalo reported, citing eyewitnesses.

According to local media activists, ISIS is using civilians as human shields in the battles against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“The terror group is sending civilians to the battlefronts in northern Syria in order to use them as human shields to claim that the western-backed SDF troops are killing innocent civilians,” Kalo told ARA News.

“The ISIS use of civilians as human shields has affected the performance of our troops,” SDF commander in Manbij Adnan Abu Amjad told ARA News.

“Our goal is to protect civilians against ISIS, and we are aware of the group’s brutal strategy of using those civilians as human shields, that’s why we’re being extremely careful during our military operations,” the official said.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Hollywood to premier story of Baptist Republican, anti-slaver in Mississippi
[Huffpoo] 'Free State of Jones' - Three quarters of a century ago, "Gone with the Wind," a film that mythologized an Old South of wealthy planters and obedient slaves, premiered in Atlanta amidst great fanfare and public interest.

This week, a very different sort of film about the South of the Civil War and Reconstruction era ‐ "Free State of Jones" -- will have its premiere, and as we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the War and Reconstruction and struggle through our own time of social and racial divisiveness, the public would do very well to take the film’s measure.

That is because "Free State of Jones," challenges our many misconceptions of the Civil War and Reconstruction and can promote a dialogue about what may have been possible more than a century ago ‐ and what is very much possible in our own day. "Free State of Jones" is based on a true story of interracial resistance to the Confederacy in Civil War Mississippi.

It is the story of how a white farmer from humble origins named Newton Knight came to see how the Confederacy favored the rich planters at the expense of men and women like himself and chose to organize a rebellion aimed at establishing a terrain of freedom, a "free state," in the county of Jones.

India-Pakistan
Are we okay with politicians threatening rape on TV?
[DAWN] On a live TV talk show some nights ago, applauded campaigner and journalist Marvi Sirmed was verbally accosted and threatened with force by a bearded bulwark of what has become Islam in this country.

Marvi had the gall, the complete and appreciable bravado, to simply agree with another speaker Barrister Masroor on the show. Masroor had commented that when it came to honour killings in Pakistain, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) seemed slumbering in an inebriated stupor.

For agreeing with his words, Jamaat-e-Ulema-e-Islam Fazl's (JUI-F) Hafiz Hamdullah called Marvi a "whore", vowed to "strip her" if she didn’t quieten down and tried to physically assault her.

While the questionable language was omitted from the transmission, it circulated widely on social media after Marvi posted about her experience.

Her claims were backed by the other panelists on the show.

I don’t know about you but if someone airs an incitement to rape on national television -- in a country where religious celebrities provoke murderers and hate-mongerers -- I consider such threats to be a clarion call for rolling out the legal books and restraining orders, and doing some rigorous rethinking of why these men represent our social and political system.

The ’holy man’ in question here, Senator -- yes, Senator -- Hafiz Hamdullah, went on to say that he would not "allow" Marvi to speak.

Errrr, who died and decided to make you king of the oafs?

Marvi is a strong, opinionated woman; she is not the kind to take this type of abuse lying down. Unfortunately, that is how most men here like to give anything to a woman. But Marvi rebuffed Hamdullah (I refuse to use any sort of scholarly title for such a man) in full.

The audacity of a woman in Pakistain, a woman I say, to dish out some sweet scorn? -- of course, she ought to be pillaged and shown a knuckle or two. Such was Hamdullah’s reaction and aggression, that he had to be tackled and led out of the recording.

Meanwhile,
...back at the palazzo, Count Guido had escaped from his bonds and overwhelmed his guard using the bludgeon the faithful Filomena had smuggled to him in the loaf of bread...
the show continued airing, stacking up ratings in a world where sensationalism is our favourite kind of televised past-time.
