Incirlik shut down: airspace closed, condition "Delta"
At several sources, and thanks to Rantburg citizens for pointing this out.
U.S. troops at Turkey’s Incirlik air base were at the highest force protection level, known as "condition Delta," after the power was cut off at the base and the Turkish government closed the airspace around the site just hours after a foiled military coup attempt, a U.S. official told ABC News today.

Turkey allows the United States to use the air base for operations associated with its air campaign against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

There are 2,200 U.S. personnel in Turkey, including 1,500 stationed at Incirlik.

A Pentagon spokesman said the loss of commercial power to Incirlik has not affected operations because the U.S. facilities there are operating on internal power sources. U.S. officials are working with their Turkish counterparts to resume air operations at the air base. All U.S. government personnel in Turkey appear safe and secure, he added.

"Turkish government has closed its airspace to military aircraft, and as a result air operations at Incirlik Air Base have been halted at this time," Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook told ABC News. "In the meantime, U.S. Central Command is adjusting flight operations in the counter-ISIL campaign to minimize any effects on the campaign."

Turkey Coup: mid-day Saturday updates
Pro-coup soldiers seeking asylum arrested in Greece

Seven military personnel and a civilian on board a Turkish military helicopter who were arrested after landing in northern Greece would be extradited to Turkey, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Saturday.

A Blackhawk military helicopter landed at the airport in the city of Alexandroupolis in northeastern Greece and the passengers were arrested for illegal entry into Greece.

The Greek government said that the Blackhawk helicopter will be returned to Turkey as soon as possible, and added that the asylum demand of the eight coup-involved staff will be examined. Later on, Greek officials told foreign minister Çavuşoğlu that they would extradite the pro-coup soldiers who flied there after the coup attempt failed.

The ministry said the helicopter gave a distress signal at 10:45 a.m. local time and landed six minutes later. They have reportedly requested political asylum, according to Greek police officials.

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said that Turkey has requested extradition of soldiers who escaped to Greece, while Greek authorities said they are are ready to cooperate with Turkey, what is necessary will be done.

Judicial board dismisses judges over coup attempt

The Turkish Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) laid off 2,745 judges and removed five members after an extraordinary meeting on Saturday, which came after a failed coup attempt by the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ), while 11 prosecutors, 10 Court of Appeals members were arrested, and arrest warrants were issued for 140 others.
That's a lot of judges, and done very quickly: almost as if it was planned in advance...
Some members of the state council who have connections with the FETÖ terror organization were also detained, according to the Anadolu Agency.

Some 541 judges were from courts of first instance among the total 2,745 judges who were laid off, while the remaining 2,204 judges were from courts of original jurisdiction.

Pro-coup soldiers blocking Istanbul's Bosporus Bridge surrender

Approximately 50 soldiers backing the coup against the Turkish government on Saturday surrendered on the Bosporus Bridge in Istanbul that they had held throughout the night, television pictures showed.

The soldiers, dressed in full camouflage, walked out from behind their tank holding their hands above their heads, while television stations were in live broadcast. The state-run Anadolu news agency said 50 soldiers were arrested.

Pictures showed supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan jubilantly jumping onto one of the tanks left behind by the departing soldiers, cheering, making victory signs and waving the Turkish flag. Others sought to run across the bridge that had been closed all night, kicking the helmets and protective gear left behind by the rebel soldiers as they passed.

The bridge was one of the first locations secured by pro-coup troops during the initial stages of the coup.

Obama convenes NSC over coup attempt

President Obama convenes national security council after failed coup attempt in Turkey, White House said. In a statement, the White House said that Obama had convened a meeting with "his national security and broader foreign policy team to update him on the situation in Turkey."

During the coup, Obama offered vocal support for Turkey's "democratically elected government" and urged all parties to "avoid any violence or bloodshed."

Declassified 28 Page 9/11 report may have highlighted wrong border narrative
[Washington Examiner] FBI officials have long suspected that terrorists might try to enter the United States through the southern border due to lax security, according to a newly declassified congressional report on potential Saudi Arabian ties to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence lawmakers voted to approve the release of the much-anticipated "28 pages," a classified discussion of suspicions that the Saudi Arabian government helped the 9/11 hijackers. The report contains remarks on several potential links between the regime and terrorists, including one sign that terrorists were probing the southern border.

"Another Saudi national with close ties to the Saudi royal family, [redacted], is the subject of FBI counterterrorism investigations and reportedly was checking security at the United States' southwest border in 1999 and discussing the possibility of infiltrating individuals into the United States," says the report, which dates back to December of 2002.

Lawmakers cautioned that the suspicions detailed in the report shouldn't be taken as fact.

Activist Cornel West goes Green Party, sez Clinton is a
[Wash Times] Activist Cornel West, a Democratic platform committee member, has announced he will vote for the Green Party presidential candidate instead of Democrat Hillary Clinton, calling her a "neo-liberal disaster."

Mr. West’s decision to vote against Ms. Clinton comes even though he participated in drafting the 2016 Democratic National Convention platform after being named to the committee by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

"This November, we need change. Yet we are tied in a choice between [Donald] Trump, who would be a neo-fascist catastrophe, and Clinton, a neo-liberal disaster," said Mr. West in a Thursday op-ed in the (U.K.) Guardian.
Safely distant from where the actual voters are, though in some circles it will be happened across and circulated.
A former Ivy League professor, Mr. West ultimately abstained from casting a final vote on the Democratic platform earlier this month over what he described as the party's "moral failures."

Instead, Mr. West said he would support Jill Stein, the presumptive Green Party presidential nominee. The party's nominating convention is scheduled for Aug. 4-7 in Houston.

Jim Woolsey: Does The Champ Care More About ‘Public Relations' Than Defeating ISIS?
[Daily Caller] Former CIA Director James Woolsey said on Friday that he has "no idea" why Barack Obama telegraphs troop deployments and strategy against ISIS "unless they care more about the public relations than they do about winning the war."

Appearing on Fox News's "Your World" with guest host Sandra Smith, Woolsey responded to retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn's concern that, "We continue to telegraph to our enemies exactly what we're going to do. As recent as a couple days ago the Secretary of Defense telegraphed we're sending another 500 plus soldiers into Iraq. I mean why do we tell our enemies what is is what we're going to do? We shouldn't. Did Bin Laden tell us that he was going to fly planes into the Twin Towers and into the Pentagon? No, so, we have to be a little bit more unpredictable in how we operate."

Iraq
Why some Iraqi Shiites are pushing for distance from Iran
[ALMONITOR] NAJAF, Iraq -- Iraq’s Shiites are witnessing a political-religious rift in their stance toward Iran whose development can be traced back to 2003. While some express complete loyalty to the Shiite political regime in Tehran, others object to its regional policies, including toward Iraq, and distance from it.

In one example, the predominantly Shiite Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) held a military parade July 1 in Basra. They destroyed US and Israeli flags and burned photos of Saudi King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. The march sparked criticism and anger among some Shiites, because the United States has friendly relations with Iraq and is supporting its security forces in their war against the Islamic State (IS). Also, given the state competition in the region, hostility toward Saudi Arabia is not in Iraq's interest.

In a related development, differing attitudes could be detected surrounding the demonstrations on International Quds Day, July 1, essentially reflecting the debate over whether Iraqi Shiites should be affiliated with Iran or pursue interests and priorities different from those of the Tehran government. At Quds Day protests organized by the PMU faction Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq in Najaf, a religious hub for Shiite clerics, there was no marked presence of clerics. In contrast, in Qom, Najaf’s religious competitor that receives funding from Iran, a remarkable number of clerics attended the annual protest. Jihad al-Asadi, an instructor in the religious seminary at Najaf, told Al-Monitor, "The Najaf seminary does not support any political agenda outside Iraqi national interests."

Obama "It Was You!!"
[Before It's News] This essay was read by Mike Gallagher on his radio talk show yesterday. It was effective. He had so many e-mail requests about where to find it that he posted it on his Face Book fan page. Since I do not have a FB account, I asked a friend to access it and send it to me. Mike said that a listener had sent it to him, so he could not vouch for all of the listings included in the essay. Even if there may be one or two that could be amiss, the list is still very long! It is incredible how many destructive actions he has taken since becoming President.

President Obama: This is why you didn’t go to France.

It was you who told an Islamic dinner ‐ "I am one of you."

It was you who on ABC News referenced ‐ "My Muslim faith."

It was you who gave $100 million in U.S. taxpayer funds to re-build foreign mosques.

It was you who wrote that in the event of a conflict -"I will stand with the Muslims."

It was you who assured the Egyptian Foreign Minister that ‐ "I am a Muslim."

It was you who bowed in submission before the Saudi King.

Many more "It Was You'z" at the link.

Egypt's Muslim preachers to recite government-issued Friday sermons
[AlAhram] The government says the move aims to push moderate Islamic ideology and ensure that radical ideas do not spread

The Egyptian government said Tuesday that Moslem preachers in the country must now adhere to uniform pre-written weekly sermons, a controversial move that authorities say is aimed at combating extremism but has irked some holy mans.

The Ministry of Religious Endowments has since 2014 been setting topics for weekly sermons delivered during Friday prayers across the country, but the new move would further restrict preachers in Egypt's more than 100,000 mosques to read out the same text.

"The objective [of the decision] is not at all political," Minister of Religious Endowments Mohammed Mokhtar Gomaa said Tuesday, stressing that the aim is to push moderate Islamic ideology and ensure that radical ideas do not spread.

Officials say the move will help address problems in preaching, including "being lengthy" or "politicising topics."

The sermons will be drawn up by ministry officials and senior scholars from Egypt's Al-Azhar -- the highest seat of Sunni Islam learning -- with contributions from members of parliament's religious affairs committee, psychologists and sociologists, the head of the ministry's religious division Gaber Tayea told Ahram Online.

The minister, who has yet to set a date for implementing the decision, said he would start with himself and deliver the pre-written sermon next Friday.

He said holy mans aged up to 45 years would be selected by the ministry to be trained for preaching at mosques.

Criticism
Several preachers have been incensed by the move, arguing that it would squander preaching talents and stifle eloquence, and that it fails to cater to cultural and demographic diversity in separate communities that may require specific speeches tackling local issues.

"This would turn a sermon into a useless news bulletin that does not appeal to the audience and obliterates the imam's personality and talent by turning him into a machine reading out a script," Ibrahem El-Zafery, an Al-Azhar imam at a mosque in Upper Egypt's Qena, told Ahram Online.

"How would a pre-written sermon fit every community and audience?" El-Zafery asked.

The decision in 2014 mandating that Moslem holy mans conform to topics set by the religious endowments ministry for the weekly Friday sermons also sparked anger among some preachers at the time.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has more than once blamed "outdated religious discourse" for holding back Egypt and called for reform, saying that radicalised thinking has become a source of destruction for the rest of the world.

Following the 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi, the religious endowments ministry revoked the licences of all non-authorised Al-Azhar holy mans and preachers -- some 55,000 -- and forced them to apply for new ones.

The move was part of the government's efforts to stop the use of mosques as a platform for political groups and to clamp down on "extremist views" that authorities said were being spread by preachers supporting Morsi's now-banned Moslem Brüderbund group and its ultraconservative allies.

Some 12,000 freelance preachers were barred from delivering sermons in 2014.

Around 100,000 holy mans and preachers are now licensed in Egypt, including some 57,000 employed by the religious endowments ministry, officials say. The rest are Al-Azhar-educated holy mans.

9/11 report's classified '28 pages' about potential Saudi Arabia ties released
BLUF: [Guardian] Perhaps most intriguingly, the 28 pages reveal that Osama Basnan, whom the documents describe as a supporter of two of the 9/11 hijackers in California, received a cheque from Prince Bandar, the former Saudi ambassador to the US.

"On at least one occasion, Bassnan received a check directly from Prince Bandar’s account," it says. "According to the FBI, on May 14, 1998, Bassnan cashed a check from Bandar in the amount of $15,000. Bassnan’s wife also received at least one check directly from Bandar."

Basnan lived across the street from two of the hijackers ‐ Khalid al-Midhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi ‐ in San Diego and told an FBI asset that he had helped them, according to the document. Basnan was allegedly a supporter of al-Qaida mastermind Osama bin Laden and spoke of him "as if he were a god".

Article fails to mention the Zacarias Moussaoui connection, nor does it mention Bandar's connection to the Saudi Intelligence Community.....or BAE.

Appears Mr. Bassnan (an import/export used car dealer in D.C.) was a bit confused about his contacts and knowledge of Messrs. al Midhar and al Hazmi.
Anguper Hupomosing9418 thoghtfully posted a downloadable PDF of the thing, which I moved here at 12:35 p.m. ET for ease of finding.

#5  Mr. Bush and Mr. Obama both have a lot of explaining to do as to why Saudi Arabia is not held accountable...

On 9/11/2001 Saudi Arabia was one of the largest suppliers of oil to the world market. Going to war with the Saudis would not only not have gotten the reluctant agreement that invading Iraq garnered, but active opposition both abroad and at home -- especially after the world economy crashed for lack of energy.

I would like to think the original plan was to go after Saudi
Arabia after Iraq's oil production was brought on line, but by then the anti-war/anti-Bush posturing had hardened into reflex -- and the Democrats controlled Congress -- making that an impossibility.

As for President Obama, he bowed to the Saudi king. Whether he thought that an elevated politeness or was truly showing fealty doesn't matter -- were Hell to freeze over he would never attack the seat of Islam.

Beware the Soros zombies
A taste:
[WashingtonTimes] They’re headed to the Republican convention with a mission to disrupt and distract

Billionaire George Soros has funded liberal organizations intent on bringing confusion, disarray and trouble to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, kept in touch with the world by Obamaphone,
...was ruled by a Democrat machine from 1942 through 1971. After the river caught fire during the administration of Carl Stokes they tried a Republican, then went back to being Democrats when the party hacked up Dennis Kucinich ...
next week.

And they’ve already had some victories.

Civil rights group Color of Change -- which Mr. Soros gave $500,000 to in his Foundation’s latest tax return -- collected more than 100,000 signatures on a petition to demand Coca-Cola and other companies withdraw their support from the convention. The petition that featured a Coke bottle with the label, "Share a Coke with the KKK."

Color of Change was joined by UltraViolet, another Soros-backed women’s rights organization, in the petition, an effort to amplify their collective voice against the GOP.

And it worked.

Coca-Cola caved to the pressure and decided to give only $75,000 to the convention, compared to the about $660,000 it gave in 2012. Other corporate sponsors were scared off.

To demonstrate how extreme Color of Change’s political ideology is, it’s latest campaign is to defund America’s police forces that "don’t defend black lives." Its social media feeds give no reference to the five men in uniform who bit the dust in Dallas.

But I digress. Let’s get back to the liberal mischief aimed at the Republican convention.

Brave New Films, which received $250,000 from Mr. Soros’ foundation, tried to make waves for Republicans by creating misinformation about their convention through social media.

Brave New Films is a social media "quick-strike capability" company that uses media, films, volunteers and internet video campaigns to "challenge mainstream media with the truth, and motivates people to take action on social issues nationwide," according to its website.

In a Facebook posting, Brave New Films bragged about driving a fake internet campaign -- a petition to allow for open carry at the convention -- into the mainstream media. The petition was reported on as if Republicans wanted it, however, it was simply created by a liberal, Soros troll.

"And the 2016 internet Troll Of The Year Award goes to some genius from Ohio using pseudonym: the Hyperationalist," Brave New Media wrote on their Facebook page, congratulating the original scammer. "When Washington Post and other mainstream media write about your act in a serious way -- you won. Respect!"

"For the record: we are proud that we helped a bit, delivering over 30,000 clicks to the original petition," Brave New Media added.

Deceit and lies -- that’s what these groups are up to -- and they’re using the mainstream media as their pawns.

MoveOn.org is also planning activity. They proudly took responsibility for shutting down Mr. Trump’s rally in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
in March, and fundraised off their success.

MoveOn is organizing a "National Doorstep Convention" that runs parallel to the GOP’s convention where members plan on going door-to-door in Ohio and other states to urge voters to "reject the politics of hate sown by Donald Trump and the GOP."

The group’s been quiet about their plans for actual protests at the convention, but we can bet they’ll be involved. On Wednesday MoveOn urged its members in an email to sign the "Movement for Black Lives Pledge," being circulated by Black Lives Matter activists, calling Mr. Trump a "hatemonger."

...was ruled by a Democrat machine from 1942 through 1971. After the river caught fire during the administration of Carl Stokes they tried a Republican, then went back to being Democrats when the party hacked up Dennis Kucinich ...
say they aim to avoid mass arrests at the protests planned for next week's Republican National Convention, but preparations by the city's courts to process up to 1,000 people a day have some civil rights activists worried.

Thousands of people from across the country are expected in the city to protest the expected presidential nomination of New York businessman Donald Trump, who has vowed to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and restrict immigration from countries with large Moslem populations if elected.

Congress demands true number of Palestinian refugees from UNRWA
[Jpost] Republicans have launched a parallel effort in the House to compel the State Department to define "refugee," as the term pertains to the Paleostinian question.

Longstanding US support for the United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is facing new questions this week, as both houses of Congress work to modify critical funding bills to determine the legitimacy of the agency’s operations.

For the first time, drafts of both foreign operations bills include sections demanding the State Department publicly define the term "refugee" as it pertains to the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict, and using that definition, identify how many Paleostinians fit the criteria for receiving UNRWA aid.

Premising Congress’ question is the notion that many Paleostinians ‐ arguably a majority ‐ are permanently settled in the Gazoo Strip, the West Bank or east Jerusalem, and therefore not under the jurisdiction of a refugee agency. Such a finding would fundamentally change the narrative of the decades-old conflict.

In 2014, UNRWA declared that five million Paleostinian refugees are registered in these territories, as well as in Jordan, Syria and Leb. The US provides hundreds of millions of dollars to UNRWA in support of its education, health and social services programs.

Four years ago, the Senate passed similar language in its own foreign operations bill, which requires the State Department to account for the number of Paleostinians receiving aid who qualify as 1940s-era conflict refugees ‐ as opposed to those who are descendants. In February of last year, the department completed its report, but had it classified.

Now the Senate is directing the secretary of state to produce either an unclassified version of the report or, alternatively, an explanation as to why the government cannot release these figures in an unclassified context.

"UNRWA is sort of becoming an entitlement program of the Middle East, and the desire is to increase transparency on who actually are refugees relevant to that conflict," said one senior Senate aide familiar with the language. "The bill goes to the heart of the debate over UNRWA funding."

Republicans have launched a parallel effort in the House to compel the State Department to define "refugee," as the term pertains to the Paleostinian question. Language sponsored by Congressman Chris Stewart (R-Utah) was added this week in mark-up to the House version of the bill.

The secretary of state would be directed by law to provide "a justification of why it is in the national interest of the United States to provide funds to UNRWA," should the House language pass.

"Such justification shall include an analysis of the current definition of Paleostinian refugees that is used by UNRWA, how that definition corresponds with, or differs from, that used by UNHCR, other UN agencies, and the United States Government, and whether such definition furthers the prospects for lasting peace in the region," it continues, adding, "The committee directs that such report be posted on the publicly available website of the Department of State."

Its push to have the State Department release a publicly available posting appears to be an attempt to preempt classification of the document.

#4  The Republicans have made support for Israel a brand issue -- a strongly resonating point of differentiation from the Democrats. Like the Lincoln-Douglas debates, where Lincoln's anti-slavery position forced Douglas to advocate for slavery -- though I've read he wasn't actually keen on it -- the Republicans' repeated words and actions supporting Israel will act to drive Israel-haters into the Democratic camp, overcoming Mrs. Clinton's pro-forma verbal support.... and presenting liberal Israel-lovers with a dilemma that will cause some to withhold their votes for president -- and perhaps for the party altogether. And every withheld vote is as good as a gained one...and easier to get.

The Grand Turk
Round up of articles about the attempted coup in Turkey
Several brief news items from Hurriyet:
Situation largely under control after coup attempt: Turkish PM

Situation largely under control after Turkey coup attempt by a group of soldiers, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has said.

The press secretary of Turkish intel agency MİT also said the situation was “back to normal” after the attempt that emerged in key state and military buildings in both Istanbul and the capital city of Ankara.

“The coup has been fired back,” Nuh Yılmaz said.

Soldiers took Hurriyet News Bldg

A group of soldiers have entered the Hürriyet building taking several journalists hostage on July 16. [Later] A local person has taken over the live broadcast in the early hours of July 16, saying that the corridors of the building were under the control of the police's special forces.

The anonymous local said live that the soldiers who had entered the building were handcuffed by the police.

Major Opposition Parties Reject Coup Attempt

The two opposition parties have announced their stance against the military coup attempt late July 15 amid news reports that a group within the army attempted to stage a coup on late July 15.

“This country had suffered a lot from the coups. We do not these difficulties be repeated,” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) said in a written statement. He stressed that the CHP will protect the Republic and democracy, saying “It should be known that the CHP fully depends on the free will of the people as indispensable of our parliamentary democracy.”

Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli phoned to Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım after news broke, expressing his party’s support to the democracy and free will of the people.

Olde Tyme Religion
The enemy within
[NATION.PK] The attacks which spread through the Moslem world just before Eid were particularly horrific, because one of them struck uncomfortably close to home, in the shape of an attack on the Masjid-e-Nabvi, which is, along with the Haram in Makkah, one of the two most sacred sites in Islam. Though the grave of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) was never under threat, its being contained within the Masjid-e-Nabvi is the reason for the wave of horror within the Moslem world.

Another related issue was raised in one of the attacks, by Bangladeshi krazed killers, who took hostage and then killed 20 people. There has been a claim that the attackers were prompted by lectures from Zakir Naik, the well-known preacher. It has also been noted with some consternation that the attackers did not fit the stereotype of madressah-educated fanatics, but were at some of the top educational institutions of the country. This was seen as parallel to Pakistain, where the Safoora Goth massacre, in which 46 people were killed, was an attack on Ismaili Shias, and was carried out by a group including IBA graduates. Naik was not named, but he is exactly the sort of person who could have influenced them.

The immediate problem is that education is not the panacea it is cracked up to be. One reason seems to be that Western education is not about developing a well-rounded personality, as getting a job. Underneath the veneer of education, the unreconstructed Moslem remains.

#1  a caliphate would only work if a non-aggressive caliph were head of it, and if we deported each and every muslim in the west to go and live in it.

good luck with that

other than that a caliphate can only be bad news because it reinforces 2 things:

1) that Islam should be a theocratic religion not a secular faith

and

2) a caliph has the power to order offensive jihad. without territory Islamists are forced to torture logic into making jihadist attacks defensive in nature. a small but important difference - this is why we have so much violence since IS got a Caliphate together. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is a caliph and an islamic scholar at that. he has the religous right to order offensive jihad, and he has done this.

Ethiopia suggests military intervention in South Sudan
[AA.TR] Rwanda, Kenya and Æthiopia are preparing a military force to intervene in South Sudan, an Æthiopian official said Friday.
Because the Æthiops aren't involved in enough regional conflicts...
South Sudan was hit by renewed violence between government forces and former rebel troops that left hundreds dead earlier this week, leading to fears that the country’s two-year civil war could be reignited. A four-day cease-fire is currently holding.

Getachew Reda, Æthiopia’s communications affairs minister, said the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an eight-nation African trade bloc, would meet to discuss restoring peace to South Sudan. The body set up to oversee a peace deal signed last August between President Salva Kiir and Riek Machar -- the former vice president who has now been restored to his role in a unity government -- has made a similar suggestion.

"There will have to be a summit," Reda told news hounds at his office. "IGAD has called for a cease-fire but has also called upon troop-contributing countries to strengthen [an international] brigade."

He said 14,000 troops would come from Rwanda, Kenya and Æthiopia following a UN request.
Paid for by the UN, which means paid for by Uncle Sugar...

Turkey's determined fight against Daesh
[AA.TR] More than 5,300 ISIS suspects have been detained so far in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
as part of the country’s intense fight against terrorism, security sources confirmed Friday.

According to data Anadolu Agency correspondents compiled from police and military sources who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media, a total of 5,310 people were held, of which 1,654 have been remanded into custody.

In the first half of 2016, 1,654 people were detained, 791 of them foreigners, the sources said.

Turkey has also shared information about more than 50,000 suspects with 144 countries to help thwart ISIS's terrorist activities, while deporting 3,500 people belonging to 98 nationalities, according to the sources.

Turkey has been taking steps to crack down on ISIS ever since the group conducted a string of suicide kabooms in Turkey.

The Turkish military has also been shelling ISIS targets in Syria, as the group has launched rockets into southern Turkish cities near the Syrian border.

On June 28, the group was responsible for killing 45 people and injuring more than 200 others at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport when three jacket wallahs, all foreign nationals, opened fire and blew themselves up at the international terminal.

In addition to the airport blast, ISIS has been linked to a number of other suicide kabooms in Turkey in recent months, including the March attack in Istanbul’s Taksim Square that killed five people, the January attack in Sultanahmet, Istanbul that killed 12 German tourists, and the October 2015 attack on a rally in Ankara that killed 103 people.

Turkey’s multi-pronged strategy for fighting ISIS Turkey’s strategy in the fight against the ISIS terror organization is made up of four main categories. Security operations against groups inside the country thought to have links with ISIS make up only one of these.

#1  The Turkey of today is not the Turkey of the nineteen sixties. Thus, if Trump wins the presidency one of the first jobs his foreign affairs team should undertake is a reevaluation of our relationship with Turkey. Turkey no more belongs in NATO than it does in the EU. If we support and guarantee the survival of a strong united Kurdistan there would be no need for the present Turkey-US [putative] alliance.
Posted by: Voldemort Barnsmell8316 || 07/16/2016 9:53 Comments || Top||

#2  Before booting Turkey out of NATO, consider where Turkey would go in response.

They likely wouldn't turn to the Soviet Union Russia given the traditional animosity and recent unpleasantness, along with Russia's plans in Syria. But that doesn't mean Erdogan couldn't canoodle with them.

Erdogan is more likely to turn to Iran. A Turk-Persian axis could then begin to force larger changes in the Middle East. It would put Turkey into Assad's camp, bring them into supporting Hezbollah, and put pressure on Jordan and the Gulf states. It would break whatever bonds exist between Turkey and Israel. It would provide markets for Iran and allow Iran to funnel arms.

So think carefully before you boot Turkey out of NATO -- they can be inside peeing out, or outside peeing in...

Death toll hits 38 as clashes spread in Indian-held Kashmir
SRINAGAR: Two people including a teenager were killed Friday as clashes spread in India-held Kashmir despite a curfew, with the death toll reaching 38 in a week and 3,100 wounded, most of them in police firing.

The teen died, while three protesters were critically wounded, when Indian soldiers opened fire on a group of protesters in the Kupwara area, a police officer speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP.

Another young man died when police fired live bullets at a group of protesters in the southern village of Yaripora.

Fearing large-scale protests after Friday prayers, authorities had warned that nobody except medics and ambulances would be allowed to move on the streets, but Indian forces at scores of places fired tear gas, shotguns and live bullets at hundreds of demonstrators who defied the curfew.

Internet and mobile networks across the territory remained suspended for the seventh day running, but the blocks have not stopped the spread of protests.

Hospitals in the main city of Srinagar have struggled to cope with the rush of wounded, hundreds of them with severe injuries in their eyes.

“We have not seen these many and these kinds of injuries to eyes anywhere,” Dr Sudershan Khokhar, who heads the team of ophthalmologists, told reporters in the city's general hospital where more than 100 eye operations have been performed since Saturday.

Indian-controlled Kashmir imposed a curfew on Friday and blocked mobile phone services to stop people from gathering in the streets and stage violent protests over the killing of a young separatist commander by security forces.

Earlier, the Hizbul Mujahideen chief of operations was killed by Indian government security forces in Indian-held Kashmir. Pakistan condemning the 'extra judicial' killing of Wani had termed the situation "deplorable and condemnable".

It is the worst civilian unrest to hit the region since 2010, when mass protests broke out and left 120 dead.

Ten more Abu Sayyaf militants killed in Basilan
[Turkish Weekly] Around 10 Abu Sayyaf militants were killed and several others injured in the latest fierce clashes in the southern Philippines. On Friday, a military officer who asked not to be identified, said that attack helicopters had pounded Bohe Buug settlement in Tipo Tipo on Basilan island on Thursday, with rockets hitting Abu Sayyaf dugouts killing ten rebels and destroying a machine gun.

These ten are reported to be in addition to the deaths of 15 other Abu Sayyaf militants announced in a statement early Thursday. Previous reports have said that 22 rebels were killed in Sulu province and 18 in Basilan, although the military has been reluctant to release an overall death toll.

The airstrike comes as a military offensive continues into its second week, focusing on three Abu Sayyaf groups of Furuji Indama, Isnilon Hapilon and a sub leader named Ubaib. Thursday's airstrike targeted Ubaib and 37 fully-armed followers. After fleeing the area, Ubaib's group later merged with the groups of Hapilon and Indama elsewhere in the jungle covered terrain of Basilan.

The military spokesman claimed that both Indama and Hapilon's groups were being assisted by relatives of Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels, as well as some civilians eager to join the battle.

Tipo-Tipo is also the site of an MILF encampment. The MILF is currently involved in a peace process with the Philippine government, although a final agreement is yet to be put in place.

Revenge Killing: ISIS Supporters Celebrate Nice Attack
[VOCATIV] ISIS is celebrating the apparent terrorist attack in Nice, La Belle France, on Thursday as retaliation for the death of Abu Omar al-Shishani--the terror group’s so-called "minister of war"--who was killed earlier this year by coalition forces while fighting in Iraq.

More than 70 people were killed and dozens more were maimed when a truck barreled through a large crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day, a French holiday commemorating the storming of the famous Gay Pareeian fortress in 1789, an important milestone in the French Revolution. The driver of the truck reportedly was killed by French authorities.

"Oh La Belle France, you and the all Europe will never be secure until we will live secure on every inch in the land of the Caliphate," wrote one ISIS supporter whose Twitter account has since been suspended. "This is the beginning of the attack to take the holy Dire Revenge for the killing of Abu Omar Shishani, may Allah accept him," a jihadi posted on the ISIS al-Minbar forum shortly after the attack.

Disown jihadist ‘freedom fighters’ in Kashmir
A wide-ranging disquisition on "the discrepancy between political struggle for freedom and jihadist expansionism" triggered by the writer's reflections on the meaning of the death of the hansdsome young face of Kashmir's Hizbul Mujahideen. Well worth the time.
[NATION.PK] Burhan Muzaffar Wani’s killing in an encounter on July 8 has resulted in absolute bedlam in the Kashmire Valley, with corpse count rising to 39 as of yesterday evening. The 21-year-old commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen has been compared to Bhagat Singh ‐ both to credit and discredit Wani’s struggle, depending on who’s doing the juxtaposition. But notwithstanding the often ignored evolution of the moral spectrum on the use of violence in contrasting eras, the crucial differential between the two was their ideological positions.

Wani was the offspring of the global jihadist movement that emerged in the last quarter of the previous century, hammering Moslem-majority freedom movements into Islamist struggles wherever the occupying force was ’non-Moslem’‐ including Paleostine, Kashmire and East Turkestan. And the problem with any Islamist ’freedom’ movement is that it intrinsically contradicts the very idea of freedom.

Hizbul Mujahideen, whose supreme commander Syed Salahuddin had grabbed credit for the Pathankot attack as the chairman of the United Jihad Council, is a jihadist organization whose very vocal ambitions aren’t limited to ’liberating’ Kashmire from India. Hizb overlaps with Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba

Peshmerga stop ISIS suicide bomb attack north of Tal Afar
[RUDAW.NET] The Peshmerga successfully prevented an attempt by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) jacket wallahs to destroy one of their positions north of Tal Afar on Friday, killing 3 of the bully boyz in the process.

A Peshmerga commander told Rudaw that they received information ahead of an ISIS suicide kaboom involving a total of six bombers. Only one of the bombers managed to blow himself up, three were killed by the Peshmerga while the remaining two managed to escape.

"The attackers carried western-made firearms, explosives belts, grenades and silent handguns. They intended to fight with these weapons and then advance closer to our positions, where they would then blow themselves up," Colonel Nawroz Mzury, the head of the Zummer and security forces in Tal Afar, told Rudaw.

The Peshmerga are currently searching for the two surviving bombers.

This is the third attempt of ISIS suicide bombers since Eid, the end of Ramadan.

Yemen clashes kill 44 as UN seeks talks
ADEN: Fighting in Yemen killed at least 44 people in a 24-hour period to Wednesday, military officials said, as the UN’s peace envoy arrived in the capital to meet rebels.

Saudi-backed government forces clashed with the Shiite Houthi rebels and fighters loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh in battles across western Yemen.

The UN’s mediator, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, landed at Sanaa airport on Wednesday afternoon ahead of meetings with Houthi and Saleh representatives.

The envoy met this week with President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi in the Saudi capital to prepare for a resumption of talks between the two sides in Kuwait on Friday.

Kuwait City has already hosted more than two months of UN-backed negotiations that have failed to make any real headway.

The talks, aimed at ending a war that the United Nations says has killed more than 6,400 people since March 2015, were suspended at the end of June.

Fighting has persisted across Yemen despite a truce that came into force on April 11.

On Wednesday pro-government forces seized a mountain base from Houthis in Nahm, northeast of Sanaa, said military spokesman Abdullah Al-Shandaqi.

Eight loyalists and 17 rebels were killed in the battle, he told AFP.

A Saudi-led coalition operating in Yemen since March 2015 supported the assault with air strikes, said military sources.

Four soldiers and four rebels also died during battles in Marib province, east of Sanaa, when pro-government forces repelled a rebel attempt to seize a hill overlooking their base, a government source told AFP.

Further north, coalition air strikes against a rebel convoy killed seven rebels in Jawf province, said the army.

In the oil-rich southern province of Shabwa, four soldiers died during battles that saw the army make “slow progress” against rebels, said Col. Motleq Jawhar, an infantry commander in the region.

Yemen govt delegation eschews Kuwait-hosted peace talks
[AA.TR] UN envoy to Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
Ismail Ould Cheikh on Friday evening headed to Saudi capital Riyadh in an effort to persuade a Yemeni government delegation to take part in the planned second round of Kuwait-hosted hosted peace talks with the Shia Houthi murderous Moslem group.

A source close to the talks, who spoke anonymously due to restrictions on speaking to media, told Anadolu Agency that delegations representing the Houthis and their primary ally, former Yemeni President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, had both already set out for Kuwait from Oman to participate in the talks, which had been slated to kick off Friday.

It remains uncertain until now, however, whether the UN envoy succeeded in convincing the government delegation to return to the negotiating table.

The Yemeni government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi continues to demand implementation of UN Resolution 2216 -- which calls on the Houthis to lay down their arms and withdraw from cities they currently occupy -- and the 2011 Gulf Initiative.

On Thursday, members of the government delegation declared that they would not take part in talks in Kuwait until their conditions were met.

Iraq
Anbar Antics: 92 ISIS Bad Guys bite the dust
ERBIL – Iraqi army forces launched heavy attacks on strongholds of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Anbar province on Friday, killing more than 90 ISIS militants, officials said.

A statement by the Iraqi central command confirmed the death of 92 ISIS fighters in the Anbar raids.

“The Iraqi army troops, backed by an air cover from the Iraqi air force, bombed key strongholds for Daesh terrorists in Anbar province,” the statement said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

“The terrorist group has suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment in the army attacks on Friday,” it said.

Iraqi forces also launched an offensive on ISIS headquarters in the al-Qaem district near the Syrian border, killing scores of militants and destroying at least four ISIS vehicles there.

Speaking to ARA News in Anbar, media activist Haidar al-Khaledi said that local sources leaked security information about ISIS movements in the province, enabling the army to conduct precise strikes on ISIS tactical units and weapons storage centres on Friday.

“The pro-government local informants are a real asset for the army, as they provide accurate information about ISIS positions, which minimises the chance of having civilian casualties. The accuracy of any strike means maintaining the safety of civilians,” al-Khaledi said.

Afghanistan
Ghani Asks Afghan Army To Prepare For Battle With ISIS In East
Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani has ordered the Afghan security forces to be ready for a 'decisive battle' with Daesh outfits in the eastern regions of the war-torn country.

He asked the Afghan security forces to eliminate Daesh in the east in the coming weeks.

At a meeting with top military commanders of 201 Selab Army Corps on Friday, the Afghan leader declared Daesh militant group an external phenomenon, asking government forces to repress the brutal group within the span of a few weeks.

Ghani also vowed to make sure sufficient weapons were made available to troops in their campaign against Daesh and other insurgents.

In a sign of support to Afghan forces, Ghani wore the Afghan National Army ANA cap while visiting forces in Laghman, a province in eastern Afghanistan.

"What relations does Daesh have with us? Are we sharing forefathers? Tell me what we share together, what dispute do they have with us. I want to announce from this platform that the brave Selab Army Corps will destroy Daesh within a few weeks," said Ghani.

In addition Ghani said that the Afghan security forces will be well equipped within the next three years.

"In the next three years, the Afghan security and defense forces will be provided with more equipment, cooperation and funding," Ghani said while referring to NATO commitments to Afghan troops.

"I want to assure you that even a single soldier will not be reduced from 352,000 soldiers who already serve in the ranks of Afghanistan's defense and security forces," Ghani added.

Meanwhile, General Zaman Waziri, the commander of 201 Selab Army Corps assured the president that the security forces have defined a robust military strategy as part of their counter-terrorism efforts to destroy Daesh and other insurgent groups.

"We will act against all hostile plans by Afghanistan's internal enemies and foreign accomplices and we will resolutely defend our country," Waziri said.

Ghani's comments come after weeks of fierce fighting between the Afghan forces and Daesh militants in several areas in Nangarhar's Achin and Koot districts - leaving hundreds of locals displaced and dozens of civilians dead and wounded.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Heavy fighting in Manbij continues amid ISIS attempts to keep positions
AMUDE – Heavy fighting inside the city of Manbij of northern Syria continues between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), with less progress for the SDF, the Pentagon said on Friday.

“There’s been some pretty intense fighting in Manbij. Some of the forces trying to remove ISIL [ISIS] from Manbij have entered the center of the city and there’s been some pretty intense fighting,” Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said about the ongoing offensive led by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

“There’s been a significant flow of civilians as well trying to leave Manbij. But in terms of the actual situation on the ground, there hasn’t been too much movement other than some of those forces have again been able to enter portions of the city and continue to make progress, but it has not changed all that much in the last few days,” he concluded.

The Pentagon spokesperson wasn’t also aware of any negotiations with ISIS to leave the city. “But right now, what we see is fighting. We see ISIL trying to retain that territory and devoting a lot of resources to it. And likewise, the Syrian Arab coalition continues to push forward against that and continues to show a lot of toughness and resiliency in the process,” he said.

In an effort to fight against the SDF advances, the Islamic State fighters recently started to forcefully recruiting men between 15 and 40 years old for Jihad, local media sources reported.

Spengler on winning domestic intelligence war against the jihadis
[AsiaTimes] Why did the French police allow a foreign national with a criminal record of violence to reside in France? Apart from utter incompetence, the explanation is that he was a snitch for the French authorities. Blackmailing Muslim criminals to inform on prospective terrorists is the principal activity of European counter-terrorism agencies, as I noted in 2015. Every Muslim in Europe knows this.

The terrorists, though, have succeeded in turning the police agents sent to spy on them and forcing them to commit suicide attacks to expiate their sins. This has become depressingly familiar...The way to win the war is to frighten the larger community of Muslims who passively support terror by action or inaction–frighten them so badly that they will inform on family members. Frightening the larger Muslim population in the West does not require a great deal of effort: a few thousand deportations would do. Western intelligence services do not even have to deport the right people; the wrong people know who they are, and so do many of their neighbors. The ensuing conversation is an easy one to have. "I understand that your nephew is due for deportation, Hussein, and I believe you when you tell me that he has done nothing wrong. I might be able to help you. But you have to help me. Give me something I can use–and don't waste my time by making things up, or I swear that I'll deport you, too. If you don't have any information, then find out who does."

This approach to quashing insurgency has worked numerous times in the past...

Morocco Dismantles New 6-Member Terrorist Cell
Morocco’s security services were able on Thursday to dismantle a terror cell linked to ISIS in Libya. The network includes six members who were active in the cities of Agadir, Amezmez, Chichaoua, Laqliaa and Aint Melloul in the South.

A statement carried by the Interior Ministry said this cell, one of whose members lived in Libya, had secretly planned to join the ISIS branch in the country, through the borders with the Sahelo-Saharan region.

According to the same source, monitoring operations also revealed that a member of the terrorist network was preparing a homemade explosive device to carry out terrorist operations in Morocco and leave a huge number of casualties, the same way ISIS does.

The ministry statement also said that monitoring the situation in Libya showed that the country has become a base for ISIS fighters in accordance with the instructions of the organization’s leadership, to establish an expanding control in the Maghreb region through its Libyan branch.

The suspects will be brought before justice after the completion of investigations conducted under the competent public prosecutor’s office.

Moroccan authorities had previously arrested suspects from several cities planning to join the ISIS branch in Libya. Since 2002, Morocco has been able to dismantle more than 155 terrorist cells.

#1  Brexit, and the Nice attack, provide Europe – especially the xenophobes in Poland, Hungry, Bulgaria, Macedonia and anti-immigrant nations – to look into the mirror and see how it feels to be looked down upon you by those who think they have a bit more than what you have. One jeopardizes the whole social development of Europe by starting to follow the solution to the refugee crisis provided by the xenophobic way of the radicals in West.

But mass murder by 14 tonne lorry is virtually unheard of in Poland, Hungry, Bulgaria, Macedonia.

Bosnian court upolds sentence against former beauty queen in mob hit
[RFE/RL] An appeals court in Bosnia-Herzegovina has upheld a prison sentence against a former beauty queen who was charged with luring a Bosnian mafia boss into a trap so his rival could attempt to kill him.

Former model Slobodanka Tosic was jailed for two-and-a-half years for arranging a date with organized crime boss Djordje Zdrale in 2006 and betraying him to his rival, Darko Elez. Zdrale was injured in the assassination attempt but managed to escape.

Zdrale, who is serving a 20-year sentence for an unrelated murder, was brought from his cell to testify against Tosic.

Tosic, who was charged as an accomplice in the plot, had been awarded the title of "Miss Bosnia" in 2005. She appeared on the cover of Serbian Playboy magazine in 2008 and later became a participant in the reality TV show Survivor.

Bangladesh
Police analyse CCTV footage for lead in Gulshan attack probe
[Dhaka Tribune] Even though the closed circuit TV camera coverage of Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan has not helped the Sherlocks reconstruct the July 1 carnage, the other cameras installed in the nearby areas have been helpful in suggesting the Sherlocks how the operation was conducted.

Dhaka Tribune reported on July 10 that the Sherlocks were closely analysing the CCTV footage collected from the adjacent buildings, quoting Dhaka Metropolitan Police sources.

Investigators are yet to confirm the entry route of the attackers to the diplomatic zone as there are very few CCTV cameras installed on the streets. They are also working to figure out the exits of several suspects, believed to have assisted the attackers from near the spot.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, acting deputy commissioner of DMP's Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes unit, said that the police had collected some 50 pieces of CCTV footage from the area.

Investigators suspect that the bandidos turbans visited the Spanish restaurant several times prior to the attack.

Their main target was to draw media attention and create panic by killing foreigners, as they follow other religion and their countries are reportedly involved in the ongoing war against Islamic State

in Syria and Iraq. The restaurant was chosen apparently because it was popular among the foreigners for their array of food as well as the homely ambiance.

Sources close to the investigation also said that the attackers had gone to the restaurant on a microbus to carry out the operation.

They did not get any clue from the CCTV camera installed in the cafe as it was damaged prior to the hostage situation.

Ali Arsalan, one of the owners of Holey Artisan Bakery, told the Dhaka tribune that the restaurant had one CCTV camera, installed on the cash counter.

"The camera was to monitor the cash transactions only. It was immovable," he said.

Two to three unarmed security guards were on-duty outside the cafe at the time of the attack, but they expeditiously departed at a goodly pace as soon as the bandidos turbans started shooting, Arsalan added.

Another bloody day in Sirte
Tripoli and Tunis, 15 July 2016:

The Bunyan Marsous operation to clear IS terrorists out of Sirte has had a bad day with at least 20 men killed and a 110 others injured, some of them very seriously.

Misratan forces launched an attack this morning toward the Ouagadougou Centre which, with the Ibn Sina hospital and the main section of Sirte university are, according to the operation’s spokesman Mohammed Al-Ghasri, the last significant positions held by the terrorists.

However IS claimed to gave sent two suicide bombers, a Libyan and and Egyptian in trucks toward the attackers. It seems that the resulting blasts caused the greater part of today’s dead and wounded.

The operations room showed off pictures of a third car bomb, a truck loaded down with heavy-calibre shells. The cab of the vehicle was destroyed before the driver could make it to Misratan lines.

But throughout the day, the casualties mounted. A press film cameraman was wounded in the wrist and a commander’s helmet was hit by a sniper. The helmet was badly damaged but its wearer was reportedly shaken but uninjured.

Morale among Bunyan Marsous forces appeared to remain high as they consolidated their control of residential District 700 to the south of the Ouagadougou centre. Midweek, the Government of National Accord in Tripoli sent trucks loaded with flack jackets. Frontline pictures show many fighters wearing body armour and also camouflage uniforms.

A reporter who has twice visited the front line noted that there seemed to be much less machismo and more professionalism about the mostly-Misratan forces. The Operations room back in Misrata also today warned against fighters making unrealistic claims. Social media posts from the front have in the past exaggerated the number of terrorists slain.

Meanwhile a second mass grave has begun to be exhumed in Sirte while the Petroleum Facilities Guard say that a similar burial is being unearthed in Nufaliya. The identity of the victims is not yet clear, as is how they were killed.

US Preparing for Islamic State's 'Terrorist Diaspora'
[Iraq Sun] Top U.S. counterterror and law enforcement officials are offering grim warnings about what awaits once the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
terror group's self-declared caliphate ultimately collapses.

Much of the U.S. and coalition strategy against IS has been predicated on the idea that without the ability to hold territory in Iraq and Syria, the terror group will falter, unable to make good on its promise of a utopian society.

Yet as the fall of the IS caliphate looks to draw nearer, U.S. officials are increasingly cautious, saying the group will remain a dynamic and formidable threat for some time to come.

"We all know there will be a terrorist diaspora out of the caliphate," FBI Director James Comey told the House Homeland Security Committee on Thursday.

"Those thousands of fighters are going to go someplace," he said. "Our job is to spot them and stop them before they come to the United States to harm innocent people."

As many as 40,000 imported muscle from more than 120 countries are believed to have flocked to the conflict in Syria, with a majority of them joining IS while the group grew and saw its fortunes rise as it advanced across Iraq.

Now, Comey and others worry the terror group is in a prime position to take advantage of the flow home.

"ISIS's external operations has been building and entrenching during the past two years," according to National Counterterrorism Center Director Nicholas Rasmussen. ISIS is an acronym for Islamic State.

"We don't think that battlefield reverses alone in Iraq will be sufficient to degrade that terrorism capability," he said. "Over time we will degrade their capability hellip; but there may be a significant lag."

Adding to the concerns is the terror group's use of forged documents to get its operatives into Europe, where some became key players in the terror attacks that rocked Gay Paree and Brussels.

"We know it's a part of ISIS's tradecraft," Comey said.

U.S. Homeland Security officials say they have bolstered the department's abilities to detect fraudulent travel documents, though the risk remains that an IS operative could find a way to sneak into the U.S.

'Laptops recovered from IS jihadists filled with porn'
[Dhaka Tribune] A former US intelligence director has revealed that the laptops seized from ISIS jihadis are filled up to 80% with porn films.

Ex-chief of the Defence Intelligence Agency Lieutenant General Michael Flynn said the graphic films inures murderous Moslems to carry out their hideous brutality.

According to a report published by the Daily Mail, Michael Flynn said intelligence gathering and the closing down of the fanatics' communications channels is key to beating them.

He made the claims in the German newspaper Bild where his book on winning the war against radical Islam is being serialised.

He wrote: "We looked a ruthless enemy in the eye - women and kiddies, girls and boys, raped and exploited, the beheadings stored on a laptop next to pornography.

"At one point we actually had determined that the material on the laptops was up to 80% pornography.

"These sick, psychopathic enemies were not only unimaginably hideous, but also treacherous and torn. We had to work faster to outwit them if we wanted to beat them."

However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
this was not the first time that jihadis have been linked to having pornography on their laptops.

Last year, former London mayor Boris Johnson said homegrown fanatics from the UK who join ISIS watch porn because they can not find girlfriends.

Speaking at the time, Mr Johnson said: 'If you look at all the psychological profiling about bombers, they typically will look at porn. They are literally w*****s'.

Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, the pilot and the copilot had both hit the silk.

Jack! Cynthia exclaimed. Do you know how to drive one of these things?

Jack wiped some of the blood from his knuckles.

No, he said. Do you?...

US officials have also revealed that in 2011 the former al-Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who doesn't live anywhere anymore...
had a stash of pornography as he hid in his squalid lair in Pakistain.

US Navy Seals said they uncovered the x-rated films during the mission to kill the terror leader, who criminal masterminded the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

According to officials, the commandos found a 'fairly extensive' collection of modern porn films as they searched the building after Bin Laden was shot.

It has also been reported that the 9/11 jihadists visited strip clubs, paid for lap dances, and for hookers in motel rooms in Boston, Las Vegas and Florida before the attacks.

The nuns taught me that Christian martyrs also have their sins forgiven. On the other hand, Christian martyrs don't actively initiate their martyrdom.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Baltimore banger TU
Baltimore coppers responding to the sound of gunshots fatally shot a man who fired at them with an AR-15 style rifle, authorities said Friday.

"We're lucky we don't have four dead cops right now," Commissioner Kevin Davis said at a news conference,

There is no evidence so far that Dayten Ernest Harper ambushed the officers, Davis said.

The FBI had alerted law enforcement agencies throughout Maryland on Thursday that Black Guerrilla Family gang members had talked about ambushing police after last week's sniper attack in Dallas.

Four plainclothes officers riding in an unmarked Nissan Altima with the windows rolled down heard gunfire from a west Baltimore apartment building about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, a department front man said at an earlier news briefing.

The officers drove toward the sound and saw a man shooting an AR-15 style weapon. The man then fired toward the officers, who were about 50 feet away, and two officers returned fire, police said.

The man ran into a vestibule in the building, where officers eventually apprehended him.

Harper died at hospital. Davis said Harper was 35. Online records for the Baltimore man say he was 33 years old.

One officer was wearing a body camera, but did not have time to turn it on when Harper started shooting, Davis said.
It uses the Windows Phone 6 operating system. You wouldn't believe what a pain it is...
The two officers who fired at Harper are on routine administrative leave. They are 16- and 6-year veterans of the department, but Davis did not identify them further.

Online court records indicate Harper was black.
So do you protest the police shooting a black man or protest a black man owning an AR-15 'assault' rifle? Decisions, decisions...
The shooting comes amid outrage and protests over the shootings by police of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota, and the retaliatory attack by a black sniper that killed five coppers in Dallas.

Investigators recovered several .223-caliber shell casings from the scene in Baltimore -- ammunition that can penetrate patrol officers' body armor, Davis said.

"I am concerned that these firearms are so easy for bad guys to get their hands on," Davis said, referring to the rifle, which had a pistol grip handle.

"These type of firearms are all over the place," he said. "(They have) the power to reach out and touch someone from a long distance."

Court records show Harper faced charges including attempted murder in the Baltimore area between 2002 and 2011. He had three convictions, including one for armed carjacking, but in many cases, including the attempted murder case, the charges were dropped, dismissed or set aside.

This Week in Guns, July 16th, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A week following the incident we know a little more about the Micah Johnson massacre of Dallas police officers at a Black Lives Matter protest.

We know, for example, the shooter used either an SKS or an AK-74 rifle. Both rifles fire rounds that will ruin your whole day, the 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm respectively, but somehow it matters.

It was later revealed the Dallas tactical team used an explosive charge delivered by robot to end the standoff. A number of publications have criticized the tactic, questioning whether it was appropriate for Dallas SWAT to even have C4 available to them.

It is funny that the publications have had zero problem with the growing militarization of the cops and their tactics, or have chosen to ignore it right up until the moment that explosive charge was detonated, killing Johnson.

I myself have been criticized for likening the Dallas SWAT tactics to those of first person shooters moving against players who "camp."

The way I see it, between the time Johnson fired his first rounds and the time he left this vale of tears there was a firefight in which anything available could be used as a weapon, by both sides. Johnson used some close quarter battle tactics he learned from videos to kill police officers, and when he retreated he went into an area in which Dallas SWAT was forced to deal with him. At that moment, it was still a firefight even though no shots were being fired.

Think of it: a hostile element uses a semiautomatic rifle to gun down 14 of your tribe, and you, holding to the law and standards developed for your entity, attempt to negotiate a peaceful end to this sh*t show started by said hostile entity. After several hours, the suspect still refuses to surrender and acts as if what he is doing at that moment is some great victory.

I have criticized cops in this column in the past, sometimes severely, sometimes maybe unfairly. There is much to criticize them for: their increasingly militarized armaments and tactics, and their craven willingness to enforce unconstitutional laws and directives. The list goes on, and I will continue to criticize them.

But when gunfire gets exchanged between them and whatever other entity or individual, they will and should use whatever means they have to survive the encounter and to end the encounter. That's their job.

Think also that the police have other matters to deal with in a firefight. Their background shooting is a major one. Whether the shooting was a "good" shooting is another. All well and good to make them hold to those matters. But when the lead is flying I won't dig into the minutiae of the decision making process that led them to decide to deliver that one pound surprise to Johnson. That was part of the sh*t show they did not start, but were forced to end.

Dunno if anyone else has noticed, but since it was learned that the shooter was black and radical, the hue and cry for disarmament was greatly reduced. It became thunderous by its absence. So, if you think the calls for disarming the American citizenry are being made by stupid people, you should know that your enemies aren't stupid. They want you disarmed when they come for you.

Thank God Dallas is on the cutting edge of urban warfare with robots and controlled C4.

French Unity Cracks as Opposition Slams Nice Security Response
[BLOOMBERG] French security failed the people of Nice.

That’s what opposition politicians, who held their tongues after the last two major terror attacks in La Belle France, charged after a truck late Thursday tore through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the southeastern city, killing at least 84 people and critically injuring about 50 others.

Leaders of the center-right parties have maintained in the past that national unity was more important than scoring political points. Now, with nine months to go before La Belle France’s presidential elections, they’re not holding back.

"If all measures had been taken, this drama wouldn’t have happened," Alain Juppe, an aspiring candidate in next year’s presidential election for The Republicans party, said on RTL Radio. "Obviously we must do more more, we must do better."

La Belle France has been under a state of emergency since the Nov. 13 attacks at restaurants and the Bataclan concert hall in Gay Paree that killed 130 people, deploying 10,000 military personnel to guard critical sites. That assault came after the January 2015 shootings at the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
satirical newspaper and a kosher store near Gay Paree. The Nice attack and four others of smaller scale in the last 18 months have brought the tally close to 240 dead and hundreds injured. Neighboring Belgium was hit by terror attacks at the Brussels airport and in the city’s metro.

’I’m Angry’
"How is it possible that this truck could enter a totally pedestrian zone without there being any measures preventing him from taking this route?" Christian Estrosi, a member of The Republicans and head of the French region that includes Nice, said on BFM TV. "I can’t hide that I’m angry. After Charlie Hebdo, we forgot, and then we had the Bataclan and then we forgot, and we had Brussels, and after Brussels we forgot, and now we have Nice.

in December 2014, following which the Parliament passed the 21st Constitutional Amendment in Jan 2015 to set up the said courts.

President Mamnoon Hussain had also promulgated an ordinance further revising the recently amended Army Act to ostensibly aid the functioning of military courts by allowing for trials in camera, i.e without the presence of the public or the media, and over video link if necessary. The Supreme Court in a majority ruling upheld the establishment of military courts in Pakistain.

French PM: Nice attacker ‘probably linked to radical Islam’

[IsraelTimes] French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Friday that the man behind the Nice attack is a "terrorist" who was probably linked to radical Islam, a day after 31-year-old Mohammed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel killed 84 people when he plowed a massive truck into the crowd at a Bastille Day fireworks display in the French Riviera city.

He said that the military resources of the international coalition battling the Islamic State

IS backpedals on attack claims
[Dhaka Tribune] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group has issued a list of operations, including the Gulshan attack, that they claim to have carried out in Bangladesh this year.

But the brutal bad boy organization has recanted on claims it previously made about five other attacks, bringing the attacks it takes credit for down to 11 from 16. The attacks have left at least 37 people dead.

The group updated its tally of terrorist operations in an infographic published by its Amaq news agency early Friday.

The five attacks they have disowned are the murder of two homoeopaths in Jhenaidah ‐ Chhamir Uddin Mandal on January 7 and Shia preacher Abdur Razzaq on March 14; Buddhist monk Maung Shue U in Naikkhyangchhari, Bandarban on May 14; Hindu hardware businessman Tarun Datta in Gaibandha on February 8; and Rajshahi University teacher Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique on April 23.

IS has so far claimed 25 attacks in Bangladesh since September 28 last year, when an Italian NGO worker was rubbed out in Dhaka's upscale Gulshan neighbourhood. At least 44 people have been killed in these attacks perpetrated by local IS members who identify themselves as the "soldiers of the Khilafah in Bengal."

On the other hand, Ansar Al Islam (believed to be outlawed group Ansarullah under a new name) which represents al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) in Bangladesh has claimed credit for 13 attacks since 2013 killing 11 people including war crimes trial campaigners, secular bloggers, writers and publishers, and LGBT rights activists.

Nevada blasts suspect said he was Army veteran
[WASHINGTONPOST] The man who traveled to a quiet Nevada town and set off bombs that killed him and showered debris across the community described himself as an Army explosives veteran and suffered from depression after the deaths of his wife and mother, a former neighbor of the suspect said Friday.

Glenn Franklin Jones died Wednesday night in the blasts in Panaca, near the border with Utah, after detonating a bomb in a rental car outside a house heavily damaged by explosives. A woman and two girls inside fled for their lives moments earlier.

The blasts hurled car parts, building materials and bomb fragments across the town with some debris landing up to a mile away.

Jones also seemed to have a fascination with military memorabilia, said another former neighbor who knew Jones and the family living in the house.

"I guess he was bent on destruction, but not killing," said Richard Katschke. "They got about a half a block, and the house blew up."

Jones, 59, used to live in Panaca, where Katschke and former neighbor Dennis Sanders said he helped build the house owned by his former co-workers, Joshua and Tiffany Cluff. The house was still standing but left uninhabitable by the twin blasts.

Officials have not disclosed a motive for the kabooms.

A hospital administrator confirmed that Jones and the Cluffs previously worked together as nurses at the Grover C. Dils Medical Center in the neighboring town of Caliente and that said Joshua Cluff was Jones’ supervisor.

Jones moved to Panaca several years ago trying to restart his life in a new place after the deaths of his wife and mother, Sanders said. For the last several months he had been living about a four-hour drive away, in Kingman, Arizona, officials said.

Jones told Sanders he had served as an explosives and demolition expert during a stint in the Army. Sanders told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named he did not know how long Jones worked in the military or where he was posted.

Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee said Sherlocks were trying to confirm whether Jones had a military background. Army spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said she could not immediately confirm details about military service for Jones.

Katschke told AP that Jones had cared for his mother before she died last August.

"He had a fascination with military things. Shells and that kind of thing," Katschke said. "He told me he had a shop and sold military souvenirs. That kind of belied his soft and gentle demeanor."
