Marine seeks appeal of classified data case citing breaks given to Hillary
One facet of the Hillary Defense thanks to Lynch/Comey/0bean, who apparently believe that the goal of a third term of liberal rule justifies the wake of devastation created to attain it.
A highly-decorated Marine officer pending separation from the military for using his private email to send a warning to fellow Marines now wants the same consideration given to Hillary Clinton.

Maj. Jason Brezler, a Marine Corps Reservist, who has served four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and has some 16 years in uniform came under fire for mishandling classified information in 2012.

The situation of Brezler's case -- now the subject of a federal lawsuit with the Marine as a plantiff‐ was that he replied to an email sent to him by fellow Marines in Afghanistan concerning an Afghani police official, Sarwar Jan, to which Brezler attached a classified file warning that Jan may have had ties to the Taliban.

Jan has been described by Western media as, "the most crooked cop in Afghanistan" and shortly after Brezler's email an aide of Jan's conducted a "blue-on-green" attack that left several Marines dead.

Attending a graduate course in Oklahoma at the time, Brezler used an unsecured email account -- Yahoo -- which triggered a probe by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service who in turn found 100 classified documents on Brezler's personal hard drive and thumb drive.

Since then, Brezler, whose "day job" is as a New York City Firefighter, has not been hit with criminal charges but his case is pending.

Now, with first FBI Director James B. Comey and then U.S. Attorney Gen. Loretta Lynch ruling out charges against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for keeping tens of thousands of official emails on a private server, Brezler's attorney is crying foul.

"If that is so, then the current commander-in-chief should apply the same standard to Maj. Brezler and any service member under his command who have been found unfit to serve for far, far less alleged misconduct," Bowe told the Marine Corps Times.

As noted by the New York Times, Clinton's server contained at least 8 email chains classified "top secret," 36 "secret" and more than 2,000 "confidential."

Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan has formally asked the Director of National Intelligence to deny Clinton access to classified information for the duration of her candidacy for President and the State Department is reopening an internal investigation of possible mishandling of classified information by Clinton and her aides.

Antonio Sabato Jr. at RNC: Says He's 'Absolutely' Sure Champ is Muslim
[ABC] Actor, former underwear model and reality show star Antonio Sabato Jr. -- who stumped for Donald Trump on the floor of the Republican National Convention Monday -- told ABC News that he "absolutely" believes President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

"We had a Muslim president for 7 1/2 years," Sabato said. "I don't believe he is [a Christian]."

Trump, who spearheaded the birther movement, repeatedly questioned whether the president is an American and if he is a Muslim.

Obama has repeatedly said that he is a Christian.

Turkey suspends more than 15,000 education workers in widening purge
[WAPO] ANKARA, Turkey -- Turkey suspended more than 15,000 Education Ministry workers on Tuesday and demanded resignations from all university deans as authorities widened their far-reaching crackdowns in the wake of a failed coup attempt.

The 15,200 personnel were being investigated for links to the power grab launched last week, the ministry said in a statement. In addition, 1,577 university deans from Turkey's public and private universities were asked to hand in their notice. A further 492 staff were removed from duty at the country's top Islamic authority.

It marked an escalation in a purge of state institutions after a mutinous faction of Turkey’s military staged an attempted overthrow on Friday night, hijacking fighter jets and helicopters to strike key installations and security forces.

Tens of thousands of military officials, police, judges, governors and civil servants have been fired, detained or put under scrutiny -- accused of having links to Fethullah Gulen, a cleric living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, who Turkey accuses of being behind the plot.

Home Front: Culture Wars
The Anti-Cop President
[Manhattan Institute] Any hopes that the nation's first black president could uplift the nation's black underclass went up in smoke Sunday when Barack Obama doubled down on his blaming of America's police for the recent cop massacres that amount, as Heather Mac Donald rightly says, to a war on cops.

I argued two decades ago in The Dream and the Nightmare that changes in elite culture during the 1960s had a catastrophic effect on the most disadvantaged Americans in ghetto neighborhoods. That decade's sexual revolution removed the stigma from out-of-wedlock pregnancy. An explosion of inner-city illegitimacy ensued, with between 70 and 90 percent of black children born to single mothers, depending on the city. The elite's youthful interest in drug taking petered out, but in the ghetto, tolerance of drug taking resulted in a deadly crack cocaine epidemic. Elite culture's wholly praiseworthy political push for black civil rights ended in a destructive turn, with intellectuals arguing that punishing black crime, as one bestseller's title had it, was "blaming the victim." In other words, centuries of slavery and Jim Crow, giving way to lingering racial discrimination, made young black men justifiably angry and rebellious, and their anger, along with the barriers the larger society placed between them and gainful employment, resulted in criminal behavior that was understandable and almost justifiable. So by the early 1990s, murders in New York, for example--mostly by young black men killing other blacks--were occurring on average every four hours, every day.

The same spirit of elite racial contrition made generous welfare payments, with virtually no questions asked, seem like appropriate reparations for the long mistreatment of African Americans. In this way, government ended up enabling the spread of out-of-wedlock childbearing, which the culture had legitimated. But those fatherless welfare families proved far from ideal for raising successful, law-abiding children. What came to be called the cycle of poverty--single parenthood, school dropout, drug use, crime, non-work, welfare dependency--went into overdrive.

This was a cultural problem, a problem of beliefs, worldview, values, and attitudes. Elite culture had defined the ghetto underclass as victims and validated self-destructive attitudes and behavior. Ultimately, that inner-city culture took on its own inventive life, with rap music dismissing women as mere sexual objects, glorifying drugs and the conspicuous consumption that drug dealing could finance, celebrating gangsta behavior, and rejecting all authority. The anthem for this impulse, so to speak, was N.W.A.’s 1988 track "Fuck tha Police."

The Grand Turk
Turkey-US: What's the problem?
[Aljazeera] Turkey-United States relations are once again at a crossroads and could quickly deteriorate if presidents Barack Obama and Recep Tayyip Erdogan don't move swiftly to restore trust.

Tensions are rising rapidly as Turkish officials insinuate or openly accuse Washington of backing last week's failed military coup and demand that the Obama administration extradite Turkish expat Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of standing behind the coup.

And the the US response is not improving matters. The Secretary of State John Kerry has rejected any such accusations as "utterly false and harmful", and he warned that Turkey's NATO membership could be in jeopardy if it continues to purge thousands of officials and civil servants.

Will the failed coup and Erdogan's purge of the military and bureaucracy affect their relationship?

Europe
Mother And Three Daughters Stabbed 'For Being Inappropriately Dressed'
A woman and her three daughters have been stabbed in a French resort for being 'scantily dressed'.
Should have been wearing her barbeque cover?
An eight-year-old girl was left fighting for her life after the attack in the Garde-Colombe in the Hautes-Alpes region of Southern France.

The brave lion of Islam man is believed to have attacked the three girls outside the family's apartment before entering the building and attacking the mother.

Jean-Marc Duprat, a deputy mayor for the town of Laragne-Monteglin in the Hautes-Alpes region said the suspect, who is not related to them, was upset they were wearing shorts and T-shirts.
And he figured since he had impure thoughts about the eight year old that his only way of getting into paradise was the SJS route.
He's believed to have met the family earlier in the week and was staying next door.

The girls are believed to be aged eight, 12 and 14 while their mother is 46. The knifeman is alleged to have fled the scene by car before being arrested.
Are you sure he didn't just run away and get caught after he blew out a sandal?
Amaury Navarranne from the regional council said: 'The religious motive of the attack is in no doubt.
I guess you have to admit that since people are kinda onto what's going on and you'd look like an idiot if you denied it.
Meanwhile prosecutors said authorities were still trying to figure out how to hide what really happened details were still 'very vague' and investigations were continuing.

The mayor of the town Edmond Francou said: 'I was called around 9.45am to the holiday village next to the town hall because there had been a fight between two tenants in neighbouring apartments.

'There was a crowd. That's when I found a lady with three daughters who had stab injuries. They were lying on chairs'

French media says that the man is of Moroccan descent and is 37 years old. It is also reported that he is known by police for previous crimes.
So, where was he born?
Mr Francou, said the girl had suffered a perforated lung and is being treated at Grenoble

Police said they had a 37-year-old man in custody.
Remember that dungeon scene in Pulp Fiction? Imagine that but with more of a happy ending.

#8  Update from Al Ahram:

Fire in residential building in Turkey's Ankara under control: Turkish official

A fire broke out at a residential building in the Turkish capital Ankara but it has been brought under control, a Turkish official said on Tuesday, following reports on social media about a possible explosion.

Reuters reporters in Ankara could see the fire, which appeared to be in a small building. No loud explosion had been heard in the city, they said.

Tensions are running high in Turkey following last Friday's failed military coup and a series of purges the government has launched in state institutions against those it considers implicated.

All's well that ends, I suppose.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
The Goal: BLM lies force cops from policing to self protection
[The Hill] When I began my career as a police officer in 1975, the turmoil and civil strife of the Vietnam war era, where police often clashed with protesters, had subsided. The anti-police violence of militant, radical revolutionary groups such as the Black Panther Party, the Black Liberation Army and the Weather Underground had greatly diminished, as their leaders were killed in police shootouts or imprisoned.

Relations between the police and minority communities was improving, as more progressive city and police administrators openly recruited for officers within those communities, and agencies became more diverse.

Police work back then was refreshingly simple. There were good people and the bad guys. The basic job of policing was to be the "Thin Blue Line" that formed a protective barrier between the two groups. Civil rights lawsuits, criminal prosecutions and protests resulting from allegations of excessive force were few and far between.

The police could generally depend upon the support of their communities, who mostly understood the symbiotic relationship between the cops, communities and public safety. This was before the advent of the 24/7 news cycle, #journalism and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Now, as a direct result of those three entities, expedient politicians and race-baiting so-called "community activists" like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, a War on Police has surfaced; and America is now tragically caught in the middle of it. Despite what the uninformed media pundits express, American law enforcement officers have suffered more officers killed and injured in the line of duty than in the past thirty years.

New Guccifer 2.0 dump highlights ‘wobbly Dems' on Iran deal
[The Hill] Guccifer 2.0, the hacker behind the recent Democratic National Committee breach, has shared a new batch of documents from the DNC servers with The Hill.

The enigmatic hacker has already publicly released opposition research on Donald Trump, a counter strategy for the Republican convention and the personal information of 20,000 donors. This is the second cache of documents sent exclusively to The Hill.

The new files cover political strategies, the upcoming Democratic National Convention and fundraising.

One, titled "March 26, 2015 -- Plans for Recess" appears to be notes from a call with the political consultancy Democracy Partners. It covers political tactics for that year’s April Congressional recesses that would start the next day.

The call centers around five issues -- the budget, immigration, gun violence, partisan stalling of the attorney general nomination and the Iran nuclear framework, which would be announced a week later.

Notes on the Iran deal describe the then upcoming announcement as a "good deal to protect national security" but notes that "wobbly [D]emocrats want to scratch this thing."
Those [D]emocrats weren't wobbly, but adamantly against it because some Democrats still support Israel and recognize a bad deal when they see one.

Vanderbilt Football Rape Was Payback For ‘400 Years Of Slavery'
[Daily Caller] According to a report by The Tennessean, former Vanderbilt football player Cory Batey told the young woman whom he and three other men raped that her assault was payback "for 400 years of slavery."

Batey was sentenced to 15 years in prison last week -- the minimum sentence allowed under the law -- for raping and then urinating on the unconscious victim, who was 21 years old at the time. Metro Nashville police reportedly discovered explicit photographs and video of the rape during their investigation, which were shown to the victim.

"There were five acts of sexual assault and rape committed by him and him alone, and there were seven acts of violence he was found guilty of committing against me," the victim said in her testimony. "But sexual assault was not where the attack ended. Mr. Batey continued to abuse and degrade me, urinating on my face while uttering horrific racial hate speech that suggested I deserved what he was doing to me because of the color of my skin. He didn’t even know who I was."

According to The Tennessean, prosecutors had successfully kept the exact words of Batey's "horrific racial hate speech" from being used in trial. However, multiple sources told the newspaper on Friday that during the attack Batey had said: "That's for 400 years of slavery, you bitch."

A spokesman for the Nelson Mandela Foundation confirmed Zulu was attempting to reach the summit with his wife Letshego when he encountered breathing problems.

"Details are sketchy. What we do know is that Gugu experienced problems breathing. The medical team supporting the trek put him on a drip and they descended the mountain with him. We are informed that the medical teams tried everything possible to save his life," they said in a statement.

The Foundation's CEO Sello Hatang said in the statement: "I am devastated. I recruited him to climb Kilimanjaro. The last thing he said to me at the airport before he left last week was that he wanted to speak about doing other Mandela Day projects. I feel a huge sense of loss."

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Something new for Bangladesh to worry about.
A giant quake may lurk under Bangladesh and beyond

A huge earthquake may be building beneath Bangladesh, the most densely populated nation on earth. Scientists say they have new evidence of increasing strain there, where two tectonic plates underlie the world's largest river delta. They estimate that at least 140 million people in the region could be affected if the boundary ruptures; the destruction could come not only from the direct results of shaking, but changes in the courses of great rivers, and in the level of land already perilously close to sea level.

The newly identified threat is a subduction zone, where one section of earth's crust, or a tectonic plate, is slowly thrusting under another.

Up to now, all known such zones were only under the ocean; this one appears to be entirely under the land, which greatly multiplies the threat. The findings appear in this week's issue of Nature Geoscience.

Subduction-zone quakes generally occur where plates of heavy ocean crust slowly dive offshore beneath the lighter rocks of adjoining continents, or under other parts of the seafloor. Sometimes sections get stuck against each other over years or centuries, and then finally slip, moving the earth.

cientists knew of the plate boundary in and around Bangladesh, but many assumed it to be sliding only horizontally near the surface, where it sometimes causes fairly large, but less damaging earthquakes in areas that are not as densely populated.

However, the authors of the new research say movements on the surface over the past decade show that subduction is taking place below, and that part of the plate juncture is locked and loading up with stress. They are not forecasting an imminent great earthquake, but say it is an "underappreciated hazard."

"Some of us have long suspected this hazard, but we didn't have the data and a model," said lead author Michael Steckler, a geophysicist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

"Now we have the data and a model, and we can estimate the size." He said strain between the plates has been building for at least 400 years - the span of reliable historical records, which lack reports of any mega-quake. When an inevitable release comes, the shaking is likely to be larger than 8.2, and could reach a magnitude of 9, similar to the largest known modern quakes, said Steckler. "We don't know how long it will take to build up steam, because we don't know how long it was since the last one," he said. We can't say it's imminent or another 500 years. But we can definitely see it building."

The newly identified zone is an extension of the same tectonic boundary that caused the 2004 Indian Ocean undersea quake, some 1,300 miles south. As the boundary reaches southeast Asia, the complexity of the motions along it multiply, and scientists do not completely understand all of them. But basically, they say, a giant plate comprising India and much of the Indian Ocean has been thrusting northeasterly into Asia for tens of millions of years.

This collision has caused the Himalayas to rise to the north, bringing events like the 2015 Nepal quake that killed 8,000 people. Bangladesh, India's neighbor, lies on the far eastern edge of this plate, but pressure from the collision seems to be warping Asia clockwise around the top of Bangladesh, ending up largely in the next country over, Myanmar. This wraparound arrangement has resulted in a crazy quilt of faults and quakes in and around Bangladesh.

Among the largest, a 1762 subduction-zone quake near the southern coast killed at least 700 people. This January, a magnitude 6.7 event in adjoining eastern India killed more than 20. There have been dozens of large quakes in between, but the assumption was that no actual subduction was taking place under Bangladesh itself, seeming to insulate the region from a truly gigantic one. The new study undercuts this idea.

Starting in 2003, U.S. and Bangladeshi researchers set up about two dozen ground-positioning (GPS) instruments linked to satellites, capable of tracking tiny ground motions. Ten years of data now show that eastern Bangladesh and a bit of eastern India are pushing diagonally into western Myanmar at a rapid clip - 46 millimeters per year, or about 1.8 inches.

Combined with existing GPS data from India and Myanmar, the measurements show that much of the resulting strain has been taken up by several known, slowly moving surface faults in Myanmar and India. But the rest of the movement - about 17 millimeters, or two-thirds of an inch per year - is shortening the distance from Myanmar to Bangladesh. This has been going on for a long time, and the results are clearly visible: neatly parallel north-south ranges of mountains draping the landscape, like a carpet being shoved against a wall.

The researchers interpret the shortening pattern to mean that subduction is taking place below, and that a huge zone - about 250 kilometers by 250 kilometers, more than 24,000 square miles - is locked and building pressure, just a few miles below the surface. The zone includes Bangladesh's densely packed capital of Dhaka, a megalopolis of more than 15 million.

Steckler says that, assuming fairly steady motion over the last 400 years, enough strain has built for the zone to jump horizontally by about 5.5 meters, or 18 feet, if the stress is released all at once. If strain has been building longer, it could be up to 30 meters, or almost 100 feet.

France lets Iran into the ITAR Fusion project. Why?
Iran says to cooperate with France on nuclear project

Iran and France have agreed to cooperate on the multi-national nuclear fusion project known as ITER, the spokesman of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation said on Tuesday.

The announcement comes a year after Iran struck a nuclear deal with six world powers led by the United States to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.

Behrouz Kamalvandi told Mehr and Fars news agencies that Iranian officials have "reached a general understanding with the French side for joint cooperation" on the project.

Mehr and Fars said that Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation, visited the headquarters of ITER at the end of June.

Salehi was one of Iran's key negotiators in the nuclear deal with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States on July 14 last year.

ITER, which means "the way" in Latin, is the acronym for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor which is being built in the south of France.

The unique project was launched in 1985 with dozens of countries collaborating with France "on the first fusion device to produce net energy" according to ITER's website.

It said that other project members include China, the European Union, India, Japan, Russia and the United States.

#1  Follow the money. Have you ever heard of a Frenchman being charged for offering or accepting a bribe? On the other hand, could it be a sucker play? After all, how long has the Fermi Lab in the US been working (and spending Uncle Sugar's funds) on nuclear fusion? Fifty years?

#2  Wikipedia has a list of French political scandals here, dear Whavise Wheque2596. It's a long one, and more than one was about bribes given and taken. As for nuclear fusion, Fermi Labs is not the only basic research outfit working on it, because it turns out to be an awful lot harder than originally thought -- unlike engineering, basic research often turns out to be in unknown unknowns territory, which is why so many scientists are sceptical about the claims of the manmade global warming crowd. Nor is fusion the only area Fermi scientists have been researching. See here for some practical benefits of particle physics research.

China-Japan-Koreas
China 'may build nuclear plants' in South China Sea

China may build mobile nuclear power plants in the South China Sea, state media reported on Friday, days after an international tribunal dismissed Beijing's vast claims in the strategically vital waters.

"Marine nuclear power platform construction will be used to support China's effective control in the South China Sea," the website of the state-run Global Times cited the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) as saying on a social media account.

The Global Times cited the report as saying that "marine nuclear power platforms will be used" in the islands and reefs of the Spratly chain in the contested sea "to ensure freshwater".

The original report was deleted from CNNC's account on social media platform WeChat on Friday, and a staffer at the firm told AFP that it "needed to confirm" its accuracy.

"In the past, the freshwater provision to troops stationed in the South China Sea could not be guaranteed, and could only be provided by boats delivering barrels of water," the Global Times cited the report as saying.

"In the future, as the South China Sea electricity and power system is strengthened, China will speed up the commercial development of the South China Sea region," it added.

China has rapidly built up reefs in the sea into artificial islands in recent months, installing civilian and military facilities on them.

The state-backed website The Paper on Friday quoted China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) engineer Zhu Hanchao as saying that 20 marine nuclear platforms were in development. But Zhu added that they would be deployed to oilfields in the Bohai Sea off China's northeast coast, not in the South China Sea. CSIC could not immediately be reached for comment.
A tsunami would lay to waste everything China has built on these reefs. Just sayin'...

Years-long effort to blame Israel for U.S. police shootings of blacks
[LI] Anti-Israel activists exploit U.S. racial tensions and Black LIves Matter movement.

At group calling itself Atlanta is Ready (#ATLisREADY), aligned with the Black Lives Matter movement, recently issued a set of demands to the Mayor of Atlanta, including:

We demand a termination to APD’s involvement in the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange (GILEE) program, that trains our officers in Apartheid Israel

The Mayor rejected the demand, finding that counter-terrorism training benefits the Atlanta Police Department’s ability to protect Americans:

You could chalk this incident up to just some isolated ploy by local activists, but that would be a mistake.

Rather, there has been a multi-year effort by left-wing and Islamist anti-Israel, anti-Zionist, and openly anti-Semitic activists to hijack racial tensions in the United States and redirect that anger towards Israel.

Afghanistan
Jawzjan man arrested before raping 14-year-old boy
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A man has been tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
on charges of attempting to rape a 14-year-old boy in northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan, it has been reported.

The man has been identified as 30-year-old Satar and belongs to Aqcha district who was initially arrested by the local tribal elders.

The district police chief Abdul Aziz has told RFE that the man was arrested on Saturday as he was trying to rape the 14-year-old boy.

He said the local tribal elders were looking to resolve the issue through jirga but the man detonated a hand grenade during the tribal elders meeting.

According to Aziz, at least six tribal elders and the man sustained injuries after he pulled the pin of the grenade.

Aziz further added that an investigation is underway regarding the incident and injured people have been taken to hospital for treatment.

Incidents involving rape of the children are not rare in Afghanistan as the sexual abuse and rape of children have been rampant in Afghanistan, specifically in northern parts of the country.

Africa Subsaharan
Bill and Melinda: Let us build a future Nelson Mandela dreamed of
[TSA] Microsoft founder and billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates said that obstacles in the path of Africa’s youth needed to be cleared so that they can drive the future of the continent.

Gates was delivering the Nelson Mandela memorial lecture at the University of Pretoria on Sunday night. The theme of the lecture was "living together".
Appears to be plenty of evidence to indicate others have tried a similar theme. Unfortunately however, they've not enjoyed a great deal of success.
Gates said that the elder statesman's life embodied the theme of living together.

"Today South Africans are still striving to live together in the fullest sense, so much closer because Nelson Mandela and many others believed in the promise of one South Africa," he said.

"As a boy I learned about him [Mandela] in school. The first time I got to speak to him in 1994 when he called me to help fund SA's election. I admired him so much and I knew the election was historic so I did what I could to help."

He said on a subsequent trip to Johannesburg, specifically to Soweto, and prompted the founding of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

"Melinda and I had always known that we would give our wealth to philanthropy eventually. The sense of urgency was spurred on by a trip in 1997 when I came to Johannesburg. I spent most of the time in business meetings in the richer part of the city but I also went to Soweto. My visit taught me how much I had to learn outside the world outside the bubble I lived in all my life," he said.

Gates added that Nelson Mandela was concerned about the future and he believed that people could make it better than the past.

"One topic with Nelson Mandela came back to was the power of the youth...that is one reason why I am optimistic about the future of this continent. The youth are special source of dynamism," he said.

"We must clear the obstacles for young people...if we invest in the right things and ensure that the basic needs of Africa’s young people are taken care of, they will have the ability to change the future," he said.

"Let us do everything within our power to help build a future Nelson Mandela dreamed of and a future we can achieve together," Gates added.

#2  "We must clear the obstacles for young people...if we invest in the right things and ensure that the basic needs of Africa’s young people are taken care of, they will have the ability to change the future," he said.

Wrong.

If you do this, for something like 85% of any given population, you remove any incentive to sacrifice, innovate, work hard, or push their own envelope.

This is the moral rot and death gene of socialism, which is really what Gates is talking about.

There will always be some individuals who are driven and work hard because the drive is in them. Maybe 10-15% are like this. For about 70% of the rest, they work and struggle and do something other than eat, screw, and indulge in cheap entertainment only to prevent starvation. For the remainder, well, they would elect to do nothing even if it resulted in starving.

Since this is the case, you need to craft a society which provides the incentives necessary for that 70%, and takes care of the remainder who would starve. America before the New Deal did a pretty good job of this. Free enterprise plus private charity is the key.

Socialism and throwing money at people so that you don't have to watch them starve and feel bad about yourself is not a real world solution to the human condition.

Murdochs Have Decided to Remove Roger Ailes
[NY News and Politics] Roger Ailes's tenure as the head of Fox News may be coming to an end. Rupert Murdoch and sons Lachlan and James -- co-chairmen and CEO, respectively, of parent company 21st Century Fox -- have settled on removing the 76-year-old executive, say two sources briefed on a sexual-harassment investigation of Ailes being conducted by New York law firm Paul, Weiss. After reviewing the initial findings of the probe, James Murdoch is said to be arguing that Ailes should be presented with a choice this week to resign or face being fired. Lachlan is more aligned with their father, who thinks that no action should be taken until after the GOP convention this week. Another source confirms that all three are in agreement that Ailes needs to go.

State becomes complainant in Qandeel’s murder, bars family from pardoning killers
[DAWN] LAHORE: A First Information Report (FIR) registered against the nominated killers of social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch was transformed into a non-compoundable FIR on Monday, police said, making it impossible for Qandeel's family to pardon her killers.

A senior police officer investigating the case told Dawn that Sections 311 and 305 of the Pakistain Penal Code had been added to the FIR.

Advocate Balak Shair Khosa, while talking to Dawn, said the addition of these sections was a welcome step.

"There cannot be an agreement [after this]. These sections were created to end karo-kari
...the Pak practice of murdering women on suspicion of having had 'illicit relations' with other than a close relative...
. Now that they have added them to the FIR, the victim's family cannot forgive the killers as the state has become a complainant. It will be taken as a murder against the state."

Section 305, maintains the wali will be the heirs of the victim, but will exclude the accused or convict in case of qatl-e-amd (wilful murder) if committed in the name or on the pretext of honour.

Section 311 refers to the legal proceedings following the waiver or the compounding of right of qisas in wilful murder.

"Notwithstanding anything contained in Section 309 or Section 310... the Court may, having regard to the facts and circumstances of the case, punish an offender against whom the right of qisas has been waived or compounded with death, or imprisonment for life, or imprisonment of either description for a term of which may extend to fourteen years as ta'zir," reads Section 311.

Imran’s odd logic
[DAWN] HE has done it again. Misreading current events, recent history and the will of the people, Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five...
has claimed that there would be celebrations in the country if a military coup ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
from office.

Astonishingly, the PTI supremo made his comments at an election rally in AJK -- an event that is intrinsically about the democratic process and that took place adjacent to India-held Kashmire, where the Indian security forces are brutally suppressing protests against India.

It is perhaps too much to hope that Mr Khan did not mean what he said and got momentarily carried away. He is now far too experienced a politician to be given the benefit of the doubt and he has accumulated a record of anti-democratic statements over the years.

Mr Khan must not only be told that he is emphatically on the wrong side of history, but that he is positioning himself as a threat to the democratic order itself in Pakistain.

No politician ought to be able to use the cover of free speech to call for undemocratic politics without being emphatically denounced for his betrayal of the Constitution, democracy and the will of the people itself.

Nearly as offensive as Mr Khan’s thoughts is his grasp of international events. Clubbing together the ousters of Saddam Hussein, Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
and Muammar Qadaffy
...Proof that a madman with money will be politely received for at least 42 years until his people get tired of him and kill him...
, Mr Khan suggested that the reason for their fall was that the people had turned on them.

While all three were deeply problematic leaders and categorically not democrats -- indeed, each of the three relished their reputation as a dictator -- their fall was because of a variety of reasons.

In fact, given that Mr Khan has opined on the recent Chilcot report, it is strange that he appears to believe that Saddam Hussein was ousted because he had lost the support of his people.

Mubarak and Qadaffy were indeed turned on by their people. But what does a legitimately elected prime minister who will face another election in 2018 and who has made no attempt to undermine the Constitution to prolong his rule have in common with military dictators who ruled for decades and were reviled by large sections of their people?

Bizarrely, Imran Khan does not even appear to understand what transpired in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
over the weekend.

Mr Erdogan is a deeply divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
leader and the only reason he is not the all-powerful president he wants to be is because the electorate has baulked at giving him the majority necessary to amend the Constitution.

But when a coup was attempted, the Turkish people and political class came together to defend the democratic process, not simply save Mr Erdogan. The Turkish public has realised what Mr Khan has evidently still not grasped: democratic continuity is non-negotiable.

Indeed, it is politicians like Mr Khan who appear to be a persistent threat to the democratic process.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Powerful Shiite Moslem holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr
... the Iranian catspaw holy man who was 22 years old in 2003 and was nearing 40 in 2010. He spends most of his time in Iran, safely out of the line of fire, where he's learning to be an ayatollah...
instructed his followers on Sunday to target US troops deploying to Iraq as part of the military campaign against ISIS.

US Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Monday the Pentagon would dispatch 560 additional troops to help Iraqi forces retake the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
in an offensive planned for later this year.

Sadr, who rose to prominence when his Mahdi Army battled US troops after the 2003 invasion, posted the comments on his official website after a follower asked for his response to the announcement.

"They are a target for us," Sadr said, without offering details.

The Mahdi Army was disbanded in 2008, replaced by the Peace Brigades, which helped push back Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
from near Baghdad in 2014 under a government-run umbrella, and maintains a presence in the capital and several other cities.

Sadr, who commands the loyalty of tens of thousands of supporters, is also leading a protest movement that saw demonstrators storm Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone government district twice this year, hampering parliament for weeks.

The new troop deployment, which is expected to happen within weeks, would raise the number of US forces in Iraq to around 4,650, far below the peak of about 170,000 reached during the nearly nine-year occupation.

Other Shiite militias, particularly those backed by Iran, have made similar pledges to attack US soldiers in the past year, but the only casualties since American forces returned to Iraq to battle ISIS two years ago have come at the hands of the Sunni bad boy group.

Arabia
11 dead in Yemen bombings claimed by Qaeda
[Al Ahram] Suicide bombings killed 11 people Monday at two army checkpoints in Al-Qaeda's former stronghold in southeastern Yemen, officials said, in attacks claimed by the jihadist group.

One attacker drove his bomb-laden truck into a checkpoint in a western district of Hadramawt's scenic provincial capital Mukalla, security officials told AFP.

The second attacker simultaneously blew up his vehicle at an army checkpoint in the nearby town of Hajr, some 15 kilometres (nine miles) to the west of Mukalla, the sources said.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
grabbed credit for the two attacks in a report on its Telegram account.

AQAP said "dozens were killed and maimed" from forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and it posted photographs of the two bombers.

The commander of Hadramawt's second military region, General Faraj Salmeen, had earlier told AFP that the second bombing struck the centre of the city, blaming the attack on "terrorists".

Eleven people were killed and 18 were maimed in the twin bombings, said Riad Jariri, head of the health department in Mukalla.

Four civilians were among those killed, he told AFP.

Mukalla and surrounding towns were under the control of AQAP for one year until pro-government troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition recaptured the city in April.

Iran receives the missile part of S-300 defence system from Russia
[Ynet] Russia has delivered the missile part of S-300 surface-to-air defence system to Iran, Tasnim news agency reported on Monday, moving to finish the delivery of all divisions of the system to Tehran by the end of this year.

"The first shipment of missiles of S-300 missile system has recently entered Iran that shows Iran's determination to equip its air defence circle with this system," Tasnim news agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guards, reported.

Russia's agreement to provide Iran with S-300 has sparked concern in Israel, whose government Iran has said it aims to destroy.
The Times of Israel adds:
The Iranian Tasnim news agency reported on Monday the missiles indicate that Moscow is supplying Tehran with the advanced S-300 PMU2 system rather than the PMU1, information it said has been kept under wraps.

The Russian-made missile defense system is one of the most advanced of its kind in the world, offering long-range protection against both airplanes and missiles.

Presidential candidate Clinton promises to prosecute police killers
[Al Ahram] Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as The Heroine of Tuzla and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Henry Clay ...
promised on Monday to bring the "full weight of the law" against people who kill coppers if she becomes the next US president after two recent episodes of gunnies slaying coppers in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

Clinton, the presumptive Democratic candidate ahead of a Nov. 8 election, made the promise in a speech in Cincinnati at the annual convention of the civil rights group the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

"Anyone who kills a police officer and anyone who helps must be held accountable," Clinton said. "As president, I will bring the full weight of the law to bear to make sure those who kill coppers are brought to justice."

The penalties for killing a police officer are rightly more severe than those for killing a civilian because police are symbols of the rule of law, she said.

Anyone else see a problem with this statement? Murder is murder...doesn't matter who or what the victim is, how much wealth or status they have..justice is theoretically blind...or so we were taught. Reduction of Manbij pocket to take time
[ARA News] QAMISHLI – As Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) entered western Manbij, Syria, and pushed toward the heart of the city to hit ISIS there, “the operation will still take time due to huge number of explosives,” a U.S. Central Command spokesman said in a press conference.

“The battle to retake Manbij [border pocket] has become an urban fight,” Air Force Col. Pat Ryder told reporters, with advancing SDF fighters maneuvering through “countless snipers and explosive belts.”

In some areas, the SDF has encountered as many as 600 improvised explosive devices, Ryder noted, calling it “a defensive tactic frequently employed by ISIL [ISIS] enemy fighters”.

“The SDF so far [has] been addressing this threat effectively [by] approaching the bombs cautiously and with an acknowledgement that the explosives can impact the city’s civilian population,” he said.

The improvised explosives have cost a lot of casualties among fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces.

On Monday, it became known that local reporter Mustafa Mohammed of Ronahi TV died from his injurie. He and Kendal Cudi, a reporter for Hawar News, were injured in a mine explosion on 13 July near Manbij.

“And similar to other urban fights such as those in Kobane and Ramadi, the battle for Manbij will be a conducted in a slow pace to liberate the city and its people,” the colonel said. “It will take time, it will not be easy, and we are confident that the SDF will eventually take back the city and seize this key terrain from ISIL,” Ryder emphasised.

“ISIL once measured its success by the amount of territory it controlled and the rapid pace of their offensive operations to seize ground,” the CENTCOM spokesman said. “But the territory that ISIL holds continues to shrink as the terrorist organization finds itself continually squeezed on multiple fronts by indigenous counter-ISIL forces and coalition airpower.”

“These forces fighting ISIL are moving at a deliberate, steady and sustainable pace across the battlespace, enabled by the coalition’s consistent support from our considerable capabilities on the ground, sea, air and space,” Ryder said.

Middle-class Venezuelans liquidate savings to stockpile food
SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela -- Tebie Gonzalez and Ramiro Ramirez still have their sleek apartment, a fridge covered with souvenir magnets from vacations aboard, and closets full of name brand clothes. But they feel hunger drawing close.
I don't mean to be rude at a difficult time, but please remind me: who did you, your families, your neighbors, and your village vote for in the last two elections in your country?
So when the Venezuelan government opened the long-closed border with Colombia this weekend, the couple decided to drain what remained of the savings they put away before the country spun into economic crisis and stocked up on food. They left their two young sons with relatives and joined more than 100,000 other Venezuelans trudging across what Colombian officials are calling a "humanitarian corridor" to buy as many basic goods as possible.

"This is money we had been saving for an emergency, and this is an emergency," Ramirez said. "It's scary to spend it, but we're finding less food each day and we need to prepare for what's coming."

Hamas members beat Gaza residents
[ISRAELNATIONALNEWS] A video emerged today showing Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, security beating Gazook civilians as they destroyed their houses.

Employees of Gazoo City, protected by Hamas security, partially destroyed 5 homes in the Saja'iya neighborhood in order to widen the road.

As the houses were bulldozed, residents of the home protested, calling for financial compensation for their losses.

At that point, the Hamas thugs stepped in, and began to attack the residents.

Onlookers accused the Hamas members of also striking women and kiddies. Their actions, caught on video, were uploaded to YouTube.

Hamas forces rule Gazoo with an iron fist, and violently suppress any opposition to Islamic rule. There is no single power strong enough to oppose them inside Gazoo today.

Prosecutors of Baltimore officers accused in Gray’s death face pressure for disbarment
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Legal analysts ripped Baltimore prosecutors Monday over their handling of the Freddie Gray case, saying the prosecution should drop all charges against the three remaining coppers or risk more embarrassment in the courtroom.

What’s more, John Banzhaf, an activist law professor at George Washington University, said he would file a complaint Tuesday with the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission calling for the disbarment of the lead prosecutors in the trials of the six coppers accused of wrongdoing in the 2015 arrest and death of the 25-year-old black man.

The pointed criticism came Monday after Lt. Brian Rice was acquitted of all charges for his role in Gray’s arrest and death. The lieutenant was the highest-ranking of the accused officers, and his full acquittal was the third consecutive loss for prosecutors. Another trial ended in a hung jury in December, and a retrial has been scheduled.

But legal analysts said any subsequent trials should be canceled. They noted prosecutors’ failure to convict the most senior officer involved in Gray’s arrest (Lt. Rice) and the driver of the police van in which Gray’s neck was broken (Officer Caesar Goodson).

"It’s quite clear that the prosecution should not continue on," said Barry Slotnick, a prominent defense lawyer who has followed the trials in the Gray case. "The prosecution in the next three cases should strongly make a suggestion in court -- on the record -- that these cases have not been proven and will not be proven and therefore they should be dismissed."

At least 15 non-combatants were killed in raids in a northern district of Manbij while six others were killed in a village near the city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The holy warrior bastion has faced a more than month-long US-backed offensive by Kurdish and Arab fighters that has caused thousands of civilians to flee.

Not clear who posted this. I'm letting it through so that one can read the pearl-clutching of the NewYorker. I have no way of verifying the claims made by the author; perhaps some of our readers with more insight can comment (without giving away the nuclear football, of course). But a big dash of salt is required, I think.

#1  Although Incirlik probably has more nuclear weapons than any other nato base, it does not have any American or Turkish aircraft equipped to deliver them. The bombs simply sit at the base, underground, waiting to be used or misused.

I think that unlikely. And wikipedia confirms that Turkey has F15s which can deliver it. What Turkey doesn't have is longer range bombers.

#3  Got into a dust up with the Turkish Army over those things.

Turkey and Cyprus got into it in 1974 (I think, its been awhile), and I was sent in with an ADM team to evacuate the really nifty stuff, the tactical nukes that were easily transportable. Seems our intell guys were afraid the Turks wanted to up the ante on Cyprus and we didn't want a "made in USA' label on whatever happened.

I'm surprised we didn't get those things out of there years ago. The Turks would love to make a donation to the cause.

The Turks did not want us taking the tactical stuff away and they were even more pissed that we came uninviting making a near tactical air mobile assault on the weapons storage area. They had tanks, we had laws, they had M2s we had M60s, we were out gunned and out numbered but cooler heads prevailed when a Turkish General that spoke good English arrived on the scene and sent the Turkish tanks home. I really thought I was a dead man. My little platoon was TOE to scout, recon, ambush, and harass not stand and fight...

Syrian rebels launch new attack on Aleppo
Beirut-Syrian Opposition forces line up in preparation to launch the attack which would free supply routes to Aleppo clogged by regime forces to salvage besieged civilians inside.

Bashar al-Assad’s regime on Sunday had tightened its grip around opposition-held eastern Aleppo neighborhoods, which forced the hand of opposition forces to find a military plan to be carried on as of Monday.

A prominent military commander at Jaish al-Fatah (JaF), otherwise named Army of Conquest, told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the plan to relief eastern neighborhoods was developed after a Saturday meeting which brought together all JaF faction representatives.

The decision was made to launch a total battle across Aleppo, which kicked off Saturday evening.

The commander said that Assad’s regime had advanced on the Lattakia rural area axis, which has forced JaF forces to relocate their combatants to the battle zone as to restore control over lost territory.

The source later added that the units had returned to Aleppo Sunday afternoon in preparation to launch the offensive to free Aleppo city from regime grip.

The source said that the Aleppo military offensive depends on direct man to man combat and the rule out of air power and tanks. Considered critical and all-decisive, all JaF forces will be partaking at the Aleppo offensive.

Aleppo enjoys great political and military significance and specifics that come to play– all parties involved in the Syria civil war are present at the area and are considerably influential.

Regime forces, Sunday morning, advanced to cut off the last supply route leading into the eastern Aleppo neighborhoods which are packed with thousands of civilians.

Castello Road, the only route into the city’s east, is now mostly in the hands of Assad-loyal forces, with pro-opposition neighborhoods in eastern Aleppo completely besieged.

The road has been under constant strikes from forces loyal to Assad’s regime.

Delivering aid throughout Syria was already extremely challenging, but with the regime cutting off Castello Road, delivering humanitarian aid to eastern Aleppo has been rendered nearly impossible, aid workers say.

Aleppo has seen many of its neighborhoods come under fire for 80 consecutive days, with more than 6,000 civilians killed or injured, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

It said opposition-held areas in the east of the city have come under sustained attack by regime artillery and airstrikes.

ISIS troops capture Syrian Army checkpoints in Homs
The game of Islamic whack a mole continues
[ARA News] HOMS – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) seized control of some seven army checkpoints after clashes with pro-regime troops in Syria’s central Homs province, activists reported on Monday.

ISIS militants bombed Syrian army checkpoints with mortar shells, then clashes broke out and led to the dead and injury of dozens on both sides.

“The clashes centred in the area stretching from the al-Maqfar village to the Aqareb al-Safi district in Homs countryside, where ISIS was able to seize control of seven checkpoints from the pro-regime forces,” media activist Hamid al-Ali told ARA News in Homs.

“The group [ISIS] also seized a large deal of ammunitions after the withdrawal of the Syrian army troops from the area,” the source reported.

In the meantime, a Syrian army officer, who spoke to ARA News on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death of 16 of their soldiers in Homs clashes on Monday.

“The offensive came as a surprise. The terror group [ISIS] launched simultaneous attacks on our security checkpoints in the countryside of Homs,” the army official said. “After evacuating the area, our forces started to regroup in preparation for attacking ISIS terrorists and regain the lost checkpoints.”

Suspected Abu Sayyaf member arrested in Tipo-Tipo
[INTERAKSYON] Reports reaching Manila indicated that a suspected member of the Al-Qaeda linked Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...

...Basilan is a rugged, jungle-covered island in the southern Philippines. It is a known stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf, bandidos, and maybe even orcs. Most people with any sense travel with armed escorts...
The Director of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), Chief Supt. Roel Obusan, cited reports from the field identifying the arrested person as Hadji Biki Abdala alias 'Hadji Hassan'.

Obusan said that Abdala or Hadji Hassan was collared by forces from the Western Mindanao Regional command based in Zamboanga City.

Abdala is wanted by authorities for nine counts of murder.

According to CIDG regional chief Senior Supt. John Guyguyon, Adbdala had been elusive in several entrapment operations launched against him.

"But this time, we were able to corner and arrest him," Guyguyon.

The ASG operates mainly in Basilan and Sulu, and has been involved in high-profile kidnappings of local and foreign victims.

Republican Senator: The GOP MUST Purge Trump Supporters
[DAILYCALLER] Arizona Republican senator and prominent Donald Trump critic Jeff Flake
...Republican junior senator from Arizona, elected in 2012. Prior to that he was a U.S. Representative for twelve years...
believes the GOP must purge the presumptive nominee’s supporters after the election in order to survive.
But only after they've given their votes to the down-ballot Republicans, I notice. The honourable junior senator from the great state of Arizona wants to be sent back to the DC party circuit.
In an interview with The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
published over the weekend, Flake said that many of Trump’s fans are motivated by racism and need to get the boot as soon as Trump, he hopes, goes down in flames.

"Those who want a Moslem ban, those who will disparage individuals or groups -- yes we ought to, we need to [purge]," the senator told The Times.

He cited William F. Buckley’s famous purge of John Birch Society members from mainstream conservatism as a precedent, and believes it is necessary due to Trump’s lacking performance in the polls at the moment.

Univ Of Michigan Prof: New Black Republic In Southern US ‘Fairly Easy'
[Daily Caller] Some black radicals are calling for the creation of a racially segregated black nation in five American states after the deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling -- both black men -- at the hands of U.S. police officers.

University of Michigan political science professor Christian Davenport describes the notion of a new American apartheid featuring a separate black nation as "fairly easy" to accomplish.

"There are large sections of the United States that have nothing but black people in them already," Davenport told Atlanta Black Star. "There are cults and militias as well as private corporations that do whatever they want behind their closed doors."

The taxpayer-funded professor claimed that "in New York and Chicago" he observed "that organizations like the Nation of Islam occupy decent-size areas in American cities."

Officer shot in 'vicious' attack on Milwaukee's south side
MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee police officer was shot multiple times early Sunday as he sat in his squad car while colleagues investigated a domestic disturbance call, an official said. The suspected shooter, identified Monday as Tomas A. Uriegas, was found dead in a nearby yard, they said.

The incident began as a response to a domestic disturbance call near South 17th Street and West Morgan Avenue at about 2 a.m. During that investigation, an officer was "attacked viciously" by someone who fired shots into his squad car, striking the officer multiple times," Asst. Police Chief William Jessup said in a morning press conference.

Officer Brandon Baranowski was shot in the arm and bulletproof vest while responding to a 2 a.m. domestic disturbance call on South 17th Street near Morgan Avenue in Milwaukee. Officer Brandon Baranowski, a 31-year-old man with 13 years of service, was taken to Froedtert Hospital for surgery. Milwaukee police Sergeant Tim Gauerke said the injuries were not life-threatening.

"This is just another example of the risks our officers take each and every day to protect these citizens," Jessup said.

It was Baranowski's bullet-proof vest that saved his life, Jessup explained at a Sunday Homicide Review Commission conference.

While investigating that shooting, officers on the scene heard gunshots and discovered the body of a young man in a nearby yard, Jessup said. That man is the same person who was involved in both the domestic incident and the shooting of the police officer, police said. He said it appeared Uriegas' death was a suicide.

Police commanders have since instructed all Milwaukee officers to respond to calls in two-person squads until further notice.

Confidential Text Eases Iran Nuke Constraints
Anyone surprised? Anyone? Bueller?
Key restrictions on Iran's nuclear program imposed under an internationally negotiated deal will start to ease years before the 15-year accord expires, advancing Tehran's ability to build a bomb even before the end the pact, according to a document obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

The document is the only text linked to last year's deal between Iran and six foreign powers that hasn't been made public, although U.S. officials say members of Congress have been able to see it. It was given to the AP by a diplomat whose work has focused on Iran's nuclear program for more than a decade, and its authenticity was confirmed by another diplomat who possesses the same document.
So the Iranians, our Executive branch, our Congress, and various diplomats can see the document. But we can't...
The diplomat who shared the document with the AP described it as an add-on agreement to the nuclear deal. But while formally separate from that accord, he said that it was in effect an integral part of the deal and had been approved by the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, the six powers that negotiated the deal with Tehran.
And then made secret so as not to upset anyone in those six countries...
Details published earlier outline most restraints on Iran's nuclear program meant to reduce the threat that Tehran will turn nuclear activities it says are peaceful to making weapons.

Puntland, Somaliland forces clash in Sanaag, 5 killed
[Garowe Online] DHAHAR, Somalia-At least five soldiers have been killed after Puntland
...a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe in the Nugaal province. Its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998. Puntland and the equally autonomous Somaliland seem to have avoided the clan rivalries and warlordism that have typified the rest of Somalia, which puts both places high on the list for Islamic subversion...
and Somaliland troops clashed in a deadly battle amidst the latter’s voter registration exercise in restive northern Sanaagregion on Monday, Garowe Online reports.

Puntland Member of Parliament Abdihakin Dhobadired unveiled that he cannot rule out deaths in Sanaag festivities at a press briefing. Locals were quoted as saying that technicals were alsoseized. Puntland Army Commander have confirmed that three soldiers on their side and two high ranking Somaliland military officers were killed.

Highland Governor Mohammed Farah Jentalo blamed the festivities on what he described "Somaliland’s flagrant aggression" during a phone interview with Puntland-based independent station, Radio Garowe.

He said, Puntland forces were in control of areas where the fighting erupted in the early hours of the day.

206 wards Saturday opened in Sanaag region and Somaliland Electoral Board asked residents to register and update their details on voter rolls ahead of 2017 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Somaliland Defence Minister Ahmed Haji Ali (Adami) has led a delegation of ministers, MPs and army majors to his stronghold Badhan by Sunday.

In a separate voter registration process, Fisheries Minister Ali Jama Bured is in Dhahar town in a sign for consolidating Somaliland presence in the strongly contested region.

Somaliland beefed up troops over the last few weeks despite warnings that such a military movement could trigger a "fresh flare-up".

"Fortunately, our security forces have been able to push the Taliban back," Mahbubullah Saeedi, the district governor for Qalai Zal, where fighting is continuing, said on Monday.

Saeedi's optimism however was contradicted by Amruddin Wali, a provincial council member, who claims the "militant group is controlling large parts of the centre save for the district and police buildings."

Wali put the number of Taliban attackers at around 500.

Saeedi said that eight Taliban - including a commander - were killed, while one Afghan security force member was dead and three others maimed.

Saeedi said most civilians living in the city have fled to more secure areas.

Kunduz is one of the most volatile provinces in the north. The capital of the province fell to the Taliban briefly last year, and most districts have a heavy Taliban presence.

Latino leaders switch gears, announce plans to back Trump
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Latino leaders dramatically switched gears Monday by announcing their plans to endorse Donald Trump in the wake of the recent shootings in the United States and terrorist attacks overseas -- giving the presumptive GOP presidential nominee a needed boost among minority voters ahead of his scheduled nomination this week here at the Republican National Convention.

Fourteen conservative Hispanic leaders signed a letter saying they are better off throwing their muscle behind Mr. Trump largely because Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as America's Blond Eminence and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Hamilton Fish ...
cannot be trusted, including on the issue of immigration.

"We have, therefore, decided not only to vote for Donald Trump, but to actively campaign for his candidacy," the endorsement letter reads. "Too much is at stake for America for us to remain neutral on the sidelines."

The signatories -- including Alfonso Aguilar, head of the Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles and Massey Villareal, former president of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce -- said that the Mrs. Clinton is not interested in fixing the broken immigration system, and said Mr. Trump has taken a step in the right direction by softening his immigration stance.

"We realize that much of the uproar over Trump within the Latino community has been over his comments and proposals on immigration," the letter read. "Democrats have certainly used it to pander to our community. But the reality is that Clinton cannot be trusted on immigration.

A Closer Look at the Senior Hezbollah Commanders Killed in Syria
[Haaretz] Here is a look at senior Hezbollah figures killed in Syria:

2016

-- Mustafa Badreddine, Hezbollah's top military commander, was killed in a blast in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Hezbollah, which announced his death on May 13, says he was killed by rebel shelling near Damascus.

-- Ali Fayyadh, better known as Abu Alaa Bosna, who led some of Hezbollah's military operations in Leb, Syria, Iraq and Bosnia, was killed in February during battles with ISIS near the town of Khanaser in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo.

2015

-- Samir Kantar, who spent 30 years in an Israeli prison for the 1979 killing of an Israeli man, his daughter and a policeman, was killed in December along with eight others in a suspected Israeli Arclight airstrike on a residential building in Jaramana, a Damascus suburb.

-- Hassan Hussein al-Haj, a top Hezbollah commander, was killed in October while fighting Al-Qaeda-linked turbans in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib. A week later, his replacement, Mahdi Hassan Obeid, was killed during fighting in the same province.

-- Jihad Mughniyeh, killed by an Israeli Arclight airstrike in southern Syria along with five other Hezbollah fighters in January. Mughniyeh, the son of slain Hezbollah military chief Imad Mughniyeh, was apparently in charge of operations in the Golan Heights. Mughniyeh senior, who was one of the world's most elusive bad boys, was killed in February 2008 when a bomb planted in his car went kaboom! in Damascus. Hezbollah blamed his killing on Israel.

Morocco asks to rejoin African Union after 32 years
[BBC] Morocco has formally announced its wish to rejoin the African Union, 32 years after leaving the organisation.

In a message to the AU summit in Rwanda, the Moroccan King Mohammed VI said the time had come for his country to retake its place within its institutional family.

Morocco left the AU in 1984, after the organisation recognised the independence of Western Sahara. Moroccans describe Western Sahara as their country's "southern provinces". For more than three decades, Morocco has refused to be part of the organisation.

Olde Tyme Religion
Pokemon, fatwas and terrorism
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Even if we assume that some terrorists are religiously motivated, the fact is that clerics have lost their influence over Muslims. Anyone comparing the lives of most Muslims worldwide and clerical fatwas will see that. An example is a fatwa a few days ago prohibiting Pokemon Go.

The response from lay Muslims varied from outright ridicule to rejection. Many Muslims used the edict to emphasize individual religiosity, and dismantling clerical authority and the institution of the fatwa. This is merely one example among scores that illustrate clerical status. We can debate the authenticity of that fatwa and its context, but the point is that many Muslims believed it to be authentic and responded to it as such.

Fatwas that incite terrorism are influential not because Muslims abide by edicts or bind themselves to clerics. That fatwa resonated with an ideological impulse, or - as in most cases - was initiated by an ideologized cleric in the spirit of resisting a perceived oppression, not in the spirit of piety.

If we want to eradicate terrorism, we need to stop speaking about religion and focus solely on ideology. Otherwise we are wasting our time, and more significantly, doing little to stop the next terrorist attack.

Muslim mob in Minya attacks Christians, killing 1; four arrested
[AlAhram] A Coptic Orthodox holy man in Egypt's Minya governorate has said a sectarian attack in a village there on Sunday killed one person and maimed three others.

Bishop Makarious of Minya said in a brief statement Sunday that the families of two priests in the Tahna El-Jabal village were attacked by assailants wielding knives and batons, killing a 27-year-old man and injuring three others, including a woman.

The holy man did not elaborate on the reasons behind the violence, but local media reports suggest the fighting resulted from an argument between Moslem and Christian children over priority to pass through the street.

Emad Nabil, a local lawyer, was quoted in a Christian forum as saying that police had tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
four suspects in relation to the attack.

Al-Azhar, the country's top Sunni Moslem authority, called on both sides to resort to law and not to provide the opportunity for "malicious" attempts "to sow discord and ignite sectarian strife."
A coded warning to the Christians not to make waves by insisting on their legal rights...
The prestigious Moslem body said a delegation from the Family House, a group of Moslem and Christian leaders that promotes peaceful coexistence, was sent to the village to help settle the matter.
...which will make the warning explicit.
Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's population of 90 million, have long complained
...in vain...
of discrimination and sectarian attacks in the predominantly Sunni Moslem country. Only two months ago, Moslem villagers set ablaze seven Christian homes and assaulted a Christian man's elderly mother, parading her naked in public. The assault in in Minya's El-Karm village was sparked by rumours that the man was having an illicit relationship with a Moslem woman.

Zakir Naik Supports Taliban's Decision To Destroy Buddha Statues, Calls Buddhists 'Drug Addicts'!
[INDIATIMES] At a Chennai event in 2002, controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik was asked a question by about the Taliban's fatwa to destroy Bamiyan Buddhas after they termed the status "un-Islamic".

The Taliban dynamited and destroyed these iconic 6th century statues in March 2001 as part of a campaign to remove all non-Islamic art from Afghanistan.

Zakir Naik began his explanation by stating that this act by the Taliban was "educating the Buddhists". Claiming to have read Buddhist scriptures, Naik said that Buddha had never asked for statues of himself.

Naik did admit that this act, of the Taliban did cause grief among million of Buddhists around the world.

However, it was what he said next that was disturbing - he compared statues, a manifestation of Buddhist faith to expensive drugs.
How many Muslims in Afghanistan and beyond use opium? How many in the Horn of Africa chew khat? How many in the Arab world do pills for fun and profit? Like so many forms of Muslim jihad, the majority of victims are other Muslims. Statues are a good deal less harmful.
"For millions of human beings in the world, drug is god for them". He also called Afghanistan, and its Buddhist statues the "property" of the Taliban. "Who are we to object?"
How fortunate that they -- and Afghanistan -- were only briefly Taliban-owned, though really the preacher is talking of the higher ownership that means all unbelievers merely hold their property as a trust for the next Muslim walking by to stretch out his hand and take.
The statues were among the most famous cultural landmarks of the region, and the site was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site along with the surrounding cultural landscape and archaeological remains of the Bamiyan Valley.

Well, it might upset Naik to know that 15 years after Taliban dynamited the world-famous Buddhas of Bamiyan, the giant statues were resurrected with 3D light projection technology in the empty cavities where they once stood in Afghanistan!
*snicker*
Japan and Switzerland, among others, have pledged support for the rebuilding of the statues. Both Standing Buddhas - 115 ft and 174 ft tall - were carved out of sandstone cliffs and stood at one point painted and gilded. They managed to survive for more than 1500 years, before the Taliban's 1996-2001 reign, in which they committed this act of "cultural terrorism".

Southeast Asia
Indonesia's ISIS-linked, most wanted terrorist dead
[RAPPLER] Indonesia's most wanted terrorist may have been killed after a shootout between the murderous Moslem Mujahidin Indonesia Timur
....the 'Holy Warriors of East Indonesia.' An umbrella group active in the Poso area of Sulawesi. They are headed by Shaykh Abu Wardah, aka Santoso who calls himself the Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi of Indonesia. Every once in awhile they chop somebody's head off or blow something up, but other than that they're not much of a threat to civilization as we know it..
(MIT or East Indonesia Mujahideen) and task force Tinombala.

Santoso, alias Abu Wardah, who leads MIT, is believed to be one of those who died on Monday, July 18. MIT has pledged allegiance to ISIS and has grabbed credit for past terror attacks.

Central Sulawesi Police Chief, who also serves as head of Tinombala Task Force, Brigadier General Rudy Sufahriadi was not willing to confirm the death just yet, but he confirmed a gunbattle ensued.

"Our members were involved in a gun fight. Two men died," he told Rappler, adding they retrieved an M16.

The bodies have been brought back for identification.

Sufahriadi did say however that some characteristics fit that of Santoso's.

"We do not know the identities. Our members said one had a mole on the cheek. Santoso has a mole," he said.

Earlier, former police chief, Gen. Badrodin Haiti said the distance between the members of the task force group and that of Santoso's was only a few kilometers, but forests are dense in Poso where the fight took place.

If Santoso was indeed one of the casualties, his death would be a success for the country's counterterrorism efforts as police and military have tried for many years to find him.

The threat posed by ISIS in Southeast Asia is comparatively small, but real, and it has the potential to become larger if not addressed properly. It is clear that ISIS reinvigorated existing terror networks in the region.

In the region, the center is Indonesia, the world’s 3rd largest democracy with more than 250 million people, the lynchpin of Southeast Asia. It also has the world’s largest Moslem population and has suffered the deadliest terrorist attacks in the region since the Bali bombings in 2002.

They were carried out by Jemaah Islamiyah and its offshoot groups, homegrown gunnies with funding, training and inspiration from al-Qaeda. Its latest incarnation is ISIS.

Since January, two bombings have taken place in Indonesia, at least one of which has been claimed by ISIS.

#1  Following World War II Mohammed Natsir, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, along with other Ikhwan, led the Masjumi Party (Consultaive Council of Indonesia Muslims) in the drive for independence. The Netherland ceded sovereignty and the Repbulic of Indonesia was born in 1949. The following year Natsir served as Prime Minister of Indonesia. The Ikhwan then worked openly in the country. It was directly involved in a number of health and education projects and funded Muslim institutions. The Ikhwan was rejected in 1950 when Natsir failed in an effort to have Indonesia named an Islamic Republic.
From that day to this the Indonesia military has been (as Turkey once was) the guardian of an Islamic yet secular state. Thus far it has succeeded in countering the terrorist efforts of various Islamo-Salafist movements.

The Grand Turk
Turkish, American diplomats to discuss Gülen case
The top diplomats of Turkey and the U.S. are expected to meet in Washington this week to continue discussions on the extradition of self-exiled cleric Fethullah Gülen, believed to be the mastermind behind the failed coup attempt in Turkey that cost the lives of at least 208 people.

The face-to-face talk between Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was expected to take place on the sidelines of an international meeting on the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on July 20 and 21. Along with Çavuşoğlu and Kerry, the foreign ministers of some of the other anti-ISIL coalition countries will also be present in Washington.

The foreign ministers will discuss the current situation in the fight against ISIL in Iraq and Syria and the next steps in efforts to degrade and defeat the jihadists.

However, the meeting will also be an important opportunity for the Turkish foreign minister to exchange views on developments in Turkey in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt.

Çavuşoğlu was expected to inform his counterparts on the coup attempt and its perpetrators during his bilateral meetings with the participant countries. The meetings will come after the EU and European countries urged Turkey to stay within the boundaries of law while investigating the mutiny.

In this context, Çavuşoğlu’s meeting with host Kerry will be an important one, especially with regards to the ongoing quarrel over the role of Gülen and his organization in staging the coup attempt on July 15. Turkish leadership has become more vocal in its demand from the U.S. for the extradition of Gülen, who has been living in Pennsylvania since 1999.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım reiterated Turkey’s call to Washington on July 18 after a cabinet meeting, saying “Turkey may question its friendship with the U.S.” should Turkey’s demand not be addressed.
We're beginning to question it ourselves...
“Even questioning our friendship may be brought to the agenda here. Nonetheless, our Justice Ministry is conducting the necessary work,” Yıldırım said.

Despite insistent statements from Turkish officials on Gülen’s extradition, Kerry said on July 18 he had made clear to Turkey that it must provide genuine evidence able to withstand scrutiny when requesting the extradition of Gülen. “The U.S. has a formal process for dealing with extradition requests; Turkey must send evidence, not allegations,” Kerry told a news conference in Brussels.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF razes home of accused accomplice in Jerusalem attack
[IsraelTimes] IDF soldiers descended on the West Bank town of Qabatiya, near Jenin, early Monday morning and destroyed the home of a Paleostinian accused of being an accomplice in an attack that killed a border policewoman in Jerusalem, the army said.

Balal Abu Zeid allegedly supplied a gun and drove the attackers who killed Hadar Cohen, 19, in a shooting and stabbing attack at the Damascus Gate of the Old City in February.

The three attackers who carried out the attack were armed with rifles, knives and two pipe bombs. They were killed by police at the scene, and their families’ homes were destroyed in April.

During the pre-dawn IDF operation, Paleostinians rioted and attacked the soldiers with guns and explosives. The troops shot three gunnies, the army said in a statement, without elaborating on the nature of the injuries sustained by the three. There were no reports of injuries to Israeli forces.

The apartment, which was on the second floor of a two-story building, was destroyed, but the main structure was left intact.

Earlier this month the High Court of Justice rejected an appeal by Abu Zeid’s father against the demolition of the home, where the alleged accomplice lived with his parents and siblings, including two minors.

In their decision, the High Court justices wrote that Abu Zeid played a "very significant role" in the attack.

During his testimony, Abu Zeid confessed to aiding the attackers but said he had declined to join them in carrying out the attack. "I refused and told them that I wanted to stay alive and kill Jews," he was quoted as saying.

Cohen, the border guard, died hours after being shot in the head and stabbed in the neck. She had been drafted into the Border Police only two months earlier, and was still in training at the time of the attack. Two other policewomen were maimed.

Cohen was part of a three-member squad that spotted the three Paleostinians behaving suspiciously and asked to see their identification papers. As one attacker withdrew his ID card, the others opened fire and pulled out knives to attack the officers.

According to police, Cohen managed to return fire before she was mortally maimed, despite being surprised by the attackers.

Israel frequently demolishes the family homes of accused attackers, but rarely does so for accomplices in attacks. Rights groups have argued the measure is unlawful, but Israel says it deters would-be attackers.

In other overnight activities Sunday, security forces seized a pistol and ammunition in the West Bank city of Hebron.

The Grand Turk
Turkey’s ex-air force chief ‘admits’ to plotting coup
[IsraelTimes] Former Turkish Air Force chief has confessed to plotting the failed military coup aimed at ousting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported Monday.

The report said Ozturk confessed during an interrogation to planning putsch, which began on Friday night and claimed at least 265 lives before it was quashed by forces loyal to the government.

Photos of Ozturk circulating in Turkish media appeared to show a number of injuries to his head and upper body, as he was shackled.

Turkish prosecutors on Monday began questioning Ozturk along with 27 other generals suspected to have been involved in the attempted coup, Anadolu reported.

The former air force commander has denied he was involved in the putsch, insisting he worked to quell the uprising in statements to Turkish media over the weekend.

Ozturk, who led Turkey’s air force between 2013 and 2015 before retiring from the army last year, was the nation’s military attaché to Israel in the 1990s; he served in the Jewish state between 1996-1998.

In the wake of the coup, Erdogan’s government moved swiftly to shore up its power and remove those perceived as enemies.

Turkish media on Monday reported that the Interior Ministry fired nearly 9,000 police officers, bureaucrats and others, and detained thousands of suspected plotters.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced a total of 7,543 people had been detained since Friday, including 6,030 military personnel.

The government alleged the coup conspirators were loyal to moderate US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Erdogan has often accused of trying to overthrow the government. Gulen, who lives in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania, is a former Erdogan ally turned bitter foe who has been put on trial in absentia in Turkey, where the government has labeled his movement a terrorist organization. He strongly denies the government’s charges.

Kerry said the United States would entertain an extradition request for Gulen, but Turkey would have to present “legitimate evidence that withstands scrutiny.” So far, officials have not offered evidence he was involved.

Yildirim said those involved with the failed coup “will receive every punishment they deserve.” Erdogan suggested that Turkey might reinstate capital punishment, which was abolished in 2004 as part of the country’s bid to join the European Union.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman said Monday that Turkey reinstating the death penalty would mean the end of negotiations for the country to join the EU.
Update from The Times of Israel at 2:45 a.m. ET:
In court, Turkey ex-air force chief denies planning coup

One of the most senior military figures detained on charges of involvement in Turkey’s failed coup bid appears in court Monday and denies he was the mastermind of the plot. Looking tired and haggard with his ear bandaged in images published by state media, former air force chief General Akin Ozturk appears before the criminal court in Ankara.

In his statement to prosecutors, Akin denies he was the ringleader of the coup, whose identity remains unclear.

“I am not the person who planned or led the coup. Who planned it and directed it, I do not know,” Anadolu quotes him as saying.

Some state-linked Turkish media had earlier quoted him as confessing to have played a prime role in the coup, but later replaced this information with his denial.

The court is to decide if he and 26 other generals and admirals should be remanded in custody ahead of trial, the state-run Anadolu news agency reports. They are accused of trying to overthrow the existing order and also of plotting to assassinate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Nearly all tips and confessions produced through interrogations can be beneficial. So called 'single source' intelligence must be corroborated. If found to be inaccurate, then the process of truth acquisition becomes more narrowly focused.

3 Afghans arrested for killing 16-year-old fellow refugee in Greece
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least three Afghan refugees have been tossed in the clink
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in connection to the murder of a 16-year-old fellow refugee in La Belle France, it has been reported.

The incident reportedly took place at a open hospitality center in Elliniko, a suburb Athens, the capital city of Greece.

The suspects have been identified as 18, 23, and 37-year-old Afghan refugees and are due to face charges for attempted murder against two other Afghans, aged 19 and 31 respectively.

The police is also searching for accomplices, local newspaper, TO BHMA reported, citing police reports.

The report further added that the 18-year-old suspect and his 23-year-old brother lead a group who harassed and assaulted other refugees at the camp with knives and bats, in order to gain the ’upper hand’.

The 16-year-old refugee was killed after being stabbed during an altercation at the Elliniko camp last week on Thursday, after rushing to protect the 19-year-old Afghan who was being assaulted by the three suspects and their gang.

This comes as hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees are stranded in Greece and other parts of Europe amid a refugee crisis in Europe.

The Afghan refugees started heading towards the European countries in mid-2015 amid political and economic uncertainties followed by deteriorating security situation.

Nice attack: Tuesday a.m. quick update
Nice attacker searched Orlando massacre, jihadi images before rampage: prosecutor

[IsraelTimes] The truck driver who killed 85 people in the French city of Nice showed a “clear, recent interest” in radical Islam, the Paris prosecutor said Monday, confirming the attack was “premeditated.”

The investigation showed Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel had trawled the internet for information on a terror attack in the US city of Orlando and on the killing of a police couple in a Paris suburb last month, Francois Molins said. A search of his computer also found violent images “linked to radical Islam,” he told a press conference in Paris. Molins said the investigation confirmed the attack was “premeditated,” and said 13 victims had yet to be identified.

However he said no clear link had been established between the father of three and the Islamic State group which claimed the Bastille Day carnage.

Photographs found on the attacker’s mobile phone showed he staked out the promenade in the days before he struck, he added. Bouhlel had used the rented truck to stake out the Nice seafront for two consecutive days before striking.

Uncle says Nice attacker recruited by Algerian IS member

[IsraelTimes] The uncle of the truck driver who killed 84 people on the French Riviera last week says his nephew was indoctrinated about two weeks ago by an Algerian member of the Islamic State group in Nice. The driver’s uncle, Sadok Bouhlel, tells The Associated Press that given Bouhlel’s family problems — he was estranged from his wife and three children — the Algerian “found in Mohamed an easy prey for recruitment.”

“Mohamed didn’t pray, didn’t go to the mosque and ate pork,” says Sadok Bouhlel, a 69-year-old retired teacher, in the driver’s hometown of Msaken, Tunisia. He says he learned about the Algerian recruiter from extended family members who live in Nice.

Phones, cocaine found at home of Nice attack suspect

[IsraelTimes] French officials say police found 11 telephones, cocaine and 2,600 euros ($2,900) in cash at the home of a suspect held in the investigation into the deadly Bastille Day attack in Nice. At the home of one of the suspects, an Albanian national, investigators find the phones and cocaine, according to that official and the Paris prosecutor’s office.

The suspect is among seven people in custody in the probe into last week’s attack, which killed 84 people. Three of the suspects are brought to French intelligence headquarters in Paris on Monday to face eventual terrorism charges, according to a security official.

Turkey "coup": Tuesday a.m. quick update
Deputy mayor of Istanbul district shot dead in office

[IsraelTimes] A senior official working for Istanbul’s Sisli district city hall died Monday after two gunmen walked into his office and shot him in the head. Deputy Mayor in charge of Development Cemil Candas was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries afterwards. Police detained the two gunmen, who were taken out by the rear entrance.

Various reports inaccurately stated that Candas was Jewish. Sisli is home to some of Istanbul’s remaining Jews, as well as the Jewish newspaper and the Ottoman-Turkish Sephardic Culture Research Center. The Sisli municipality is run by the opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP. The CHP condemned Friday’s attempted coup.

It was not immediately clear if the incident was related to the failed coup that has been roiling Turkey for the past several days.

The incident came after a shooting outside an Ankara courthouse and a reported bomb threat at the Turkish parliament, both on Monday, as the country remained gripped by violence.

WikiLeaks set to release documents on Turkey's power structure

[Ynet] WikiLeaks said on Monday that it was planning to release documents on Turkey's political power structure after the failed coup over the weekend.

"Get ready for a fight as we release 100k+ docs on #Turkey's political power structure," WikiLeaks posted on its Twitter feed.

Turkey gives new death toll in failed coup

[Ynet] A Turkish official says more than 190 citizens died, most of them military, and more than 1,400 people were wounded in Friday's failed coup attempt. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules, said the fatalities excluded "terrorists" in reference to those who acted against the government. At last count, government officials said at least 104 conspirators were killed in the unrest.

Attacker killed in shootout outside Ankara courthouse: Reports

[AlAhram] Turkish security forces on Monday killed an armed attacker who shot at them from a vehicle outside the Ankara courthouse where suspects from the failed coup were appearing before judges, reports said. AFP correspondents outside the courthouse -- where dozens of suspected coup plotters were having their first hearings -- reported hearing gunfire and scenes of panic as the clash erupted.

The Dogan news agency said the attacker was killed by police while two other people were arrested. It was not clear if the incident was linked to the coup but television reports said that the attacker was a soldier, without giving further details.

U.S. Consulate warns Americans to stay away from expected protest at Istanbul facility

[AlAhram] The U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul said on Monday it expected demonstrations near its facilities following an attempted military coup in Turkey on Friday and it warned American citizens to avoid the area. Turks have been marching and protesting in public places to demonstrate support for President Tayyip Erdogan since early Saturday morning following the attempted coup by a faction within the Turkish military.

On Twitter, some accounts urged followers to meet at the Consulate on Monday at 2:00 p.m. (1100 GMT).

The consulate and embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara have already cancelled visa appointments scheduled for Monday "due to recent events", according to the consulate's Twitter account.

Saudi Arabia detains Turkish army attache to Kuwait: Reports

[AlAhram] Saudi authorities have detained the Turkish military attache to Kuwait for his suspected involvement in a foiled coup against the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, local media reported Monday. The attache, identified as Mikail Gullu, was arrested at an airport in the eastern Saudi city of Dammam as he attempted to board a flight to Germany, the reports said.

"Saudi authorities are holding the military attache for the Turkish embassy in Kuwait," the kingdom's Asharq Al-Awsat daily reported, quoting what it described as a foreign diplomatic source. "He was stopped based on a Turkish request and was detained during his attempt to flee over his likely links to the coup in Turkey."

The Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya news channel confirmed the report from "Saudi sources" adding that Gullu was heading to Dusseldorf in Germany via Amsterdam. Kuwait's Al-Qabas daily said that Gullu had fled Kuwait by land to Saudi Arabia.

Turkey's ambassador in Kuwait Salih Morat Tamer told Al-Qabas that Gullu is suspected of involvement in the coup attempt but stressed that "accusations against him are yet to be investigated once he is handed over to Turkey."

Annual leave for 3 million civil servants suspended

[DailyMail] Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has suspended the annual leave of more than three million civil servants nationwide until further notice, according to a government order published on Monday. Civil servants already on leave will return to their posts as soon as possible, the order said.

The order, published in Turkey's Official Gazette, comes amid a wide-ranging government purge of the civil service, judiciary, police and armed forces following an abortive coup attempt by a faction of the army on Friday evening.

21 People Injured in Axe Attack on Train near Wuerzburg, Germany
More from the Daily Mirror here.
An Afghan teen attacked passengers on a train in Germany Monday using bladed weapons, severely injuring at least three people, and was later rubbed out by a SWAT-style team, authorities said.

The incident happened on a train in Heidingsfeld, near Wurzburg, police said. The weapons were described as an ax and a knife. Officers shot and killed the attacker, police said.

The attacker was a 17-year-old Afghan man, Bavaria's interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, said in an interview on German public television ARD. Herrmann said the police team shot the attacker after he exited the train and charged them.
The Afghan man is either 1) kidnapped from Kabul and being held in Germany against his will 2) a refugee who was radicalized by being forced to live in an opulent western country or 3) a colonist and deep-penetration agent who was activated to do what he did. My vote is mostly (3) with a dash of (2).
Police said at least three people suffered severe injuries and 10 to 20 people have what were described as light injuries, but the majority of those suffered from shock and not directly from the attacker.

Police said it is too early to determine a motive or whether the incident might be terrorism related.

Hermann was quoted by NBC's German partners ZDF as saying the 17-year-old was an unaccompanied refugee, and lived with a caretaker or foster family in Ochsenfurt, south of Wurzburg. The train passed through the town, but it was unclear when he boarded.

The suspect lived "for some time" in in Ochsenfurt, Hermann said. The police team that killed the suspect was there by chance, and was nearby on an unrelated event, Herrmann said.

The attack on the train comes days after a driver rammed a truck into a crowd in Nice, La Belle France, at the end of a Bastille Day fireworks show, killing 84 people. Authorities in La Belle France have called that attack an act of terrorism.

In Germany in May, a man armed with a knife killed one person and injured three others in a dawn attack on a train station near Munich. The attacker in that case was placed in durance vile
You have the right to remain silent...

Update at 1345 CT: German authorities are unclear on the motives of the attacker. Gob-smacked, they are...

Home Front: WoT
No More
[CityJournal] No more hand-wringing by journalists, as they stand mere yards from the bodies of the dead, about the possible "backlash" against Moslems (which never really materializes). No more declarations by U.S. officials that the mere mention of Islam in connection with Islamic terrorism is "dangerous" and "counterproductive" because it "alienates" the Moslem allies and Moslem communities whose help we need in fighting this problem that we dare not properly name. No more respectful TV interviews with representatives of "Moslem civil-rights organizations" that have been proven over and over again to be fronts for terrorism.

No more outrageous lies by government and media that, almost fifteen years after 9/11, keep so many Americans so outrageously in the dark about the world in which we live now. No more of the despicable day-to-day efforts by the same actors to keep those Americans who do get it in line, to instill in them an unholy fear that, if they dare to address the problem honestly, they’ll be thrust forever out into the dark--beyond the realm of decent society, unacceptable, unemployable, unfriendable. No more societal tyranny by those who (because they’re cowardly, or feel powerless, or have no sense of responsibility to preserve the precious gift of freedom that their own forebears fought and died for and have bequeathed them, or are, inconceivably, unconcerned about the world their own children and grandchildren will inhabit) treat as enemies not those who seek to destroy them but those who dare to speak the truth about it.

No more ignorance. A couple of weeks ago, Adam Carolla recorded his podcast--one of the most popular on the Internet--before an Amsterdam audience. Carolla, an Angeleno, asked locals about life in the Netherlands. They painted a thoroughly rosy picture. He asked about religion. They depicted a near-utopian secular country free of reactionary faith. Poof! Down the memory hole went Pim Fortuyn, Theo Van Gogh, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Geert Wilders. And Carolla didn’t challenge any of it. Then, just the other day, in an interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast (which is even bigger than Carolla’s), gay conservative Milo Yiannopoulos served up some basic facts that everybody in the U.S. would know by now if the mainstream media were doing its job--facts about the levels of Moslem rape in Sweden, about the scale of antigay animus in Moslem communities, and about the systematic efforts by European governments to obscure these and other ticklish matters. Rogan, who is no fool, and who has interviewed hundreds of people in an effort to educate himself about the world, was shocked by all of it. ("Wow! Wow! Wow!")

In the years after 9/11, major acts of Islamic terrorism in the West seemed to come along every year or so, leaving plenty of time in between to go back to pretending that everything was fine and to resume mouthing benign platitudes. Now they’re happening so often, one right on top of the other, that we can hardly keep track of them. The only upside is that it’s getting harder and harder to maintain that pretense.

The time for shock is over. The time for heaping up flowers and candles and stuffed animals at the sites of atrocities is over. The lies and ignorance and cravenness must end, and the simple facts must be faced. The free, civilized West has, for years now, been the target of a war of conquest--a war waged in many forms (of which terrorism is only one) by adherents of a religion that preaches submission, intolerance, and brutality, and our leaders and media, with few exceptions, continue to play a game whose fatuity, fecklessness, and pusillanimity have become increasingly clear. After Nice, no more.

#2  What utter nonsense you speak, my dear Percy. If that were true, we American people would never have replaced so many Democratic politicians at all levels with Republican majorities, and President Obama could have had all the laws and Supreme Court justices he desired passed by Democratic supermajorities in both houses of Congress, instead of making do as best he can with a phone and a pen. In my very own Congressional district Speaker of the House John Boehner resigned; we voted in a retired Army Ranger-cum-entrepreneur who went into politics because of Hillary Clinton's Benghazi testimony. The American people are taking care of political evolution the way the Founders designed it, by voting out those who won't do what we want, and voting in those who will.

Manafort: Kasich Embarrassing Ohio by Skipping RNC
[FREEBEACON] Donald Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort said Gov. John Kasich (R.) is "embarrassing" his home state of Ohio by not attending the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, kept in touch with the world by Obamaphone,
...was ruled by a Democrat machine from 1942 through 1971. After the river caught fire during the administration of Carl Stokes they tried a Republican, then went back to being Democrats when the party hacked up Dennis Kucinich ...

MSNBC’s Morning Joe panel, broadcasting live from Cleveland, discussed the lack of star-power in the Republican National Convention lineup wth Manafort on Monday

"My very critical kind of takeaway this morning is that they couldn’t get anybody to speak," Mika Brzezinski said.

The RNC speaker line-up consists of Republican leaders such as Paul Ryan
...U.S. Representative for Wisconsin's 1st congressional district, serving since 1999. He is a member of the Republican Party. He proposed an alternative to President Obama's 2011 budget and made himself the target of both Democrat and Republican verbal pies...
, Newt Gingrich
...former Speaker of the House, author of the Contract with America. Gingrich gave the country welfare reform and a balanced budget and the Publicans a landslide House victory in 1994. On the downside, he has a roving eye and a loose fly, he's opinionated, and he's abrasive despite his ability to work with the other side of the political aisle...
, and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), but numerous other party higher-ups are staying away.

Manafort disagreed with Brzezinski commentary. He said there are only a few Republican celebrities who will not be in attendance this week, Kasich being one of them. Kasich was one of the last men standing in the GOP primary race with Trump before bowing out in May, although the only state he won in the entire process was his own.

"Where is John Kasich?" Brzezinski asked. "He is the governor of the state."

"Kasich is the--you know what, he’s making a big mistake. He’s looking at something that is not going to happen. He’s hurting his state. He’s embarrassing his state, frankly," Manafort said.

An unhappy live audience could be heard in the background groaning at his comment.

Yeah. I forgot to mention Kasich in my comment above on the Jeff Flake story. Along with Flake, Romney, Bush, and Rubio, Kaskich should also come out of the closet and join the Democrats. Now that I'm at it, Lindsey Graham should come out of the closet. That way they can be free to be who they really are and they'll feel much better. They're all crybabies and losers and the Republican party would be better off without them.

#8  Governor Kasich may not be the kind of Republican y'all would prefer, but he definitely is not a Democrat, either old style or new. What he has been able to accomplish here in Ohio has been constrained by the fact that it is a strongly purple state, as much owned by the union/Party machine Democrats of the north as by the conservative Republicans of the south. He's had to thread between those two poles, and would have been able to do a great deal more, had he succeeded in breaking the unions when he tried.

The thing is, his opponent for governor is an old fashioned Ohio Democrat true believer. Imperfect Kasich is a much better bet, in my opinion.

#3  The folks around al Qaim, for the most part, weren't too bad according to our family Marine who spent considerable time in the villages during 2004-6.

They weren't that interested in the AQI types at the time. They just wanted to buy and sell their sheep (and smuggle stuff in and out of Syria).

He did say that it was truly the 'Wild West' of Iraq.

IED blast in Upper Dir kills seven
PESHAWAR: At least seven people were killed on Monday in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Sheringal area of Upper Dir.

"A vehicle carrying seven persons was on route to Sheringal from Dogdara which hit the planted IED," said Gul Fazel, Station House Officer (SHO) Upper Dir.

According to police sources, the terrorists aimed to target a peace committee member. The peace committee member died while under treatment.

The area of the blast has been sealed and search operations are underway.

In June, a police official was killed and two others were injured when an IED targeting a police patrol exploded on the outskirts of Peshawar.

Almaty armed attack: 8 people hospitalized
Eight people, injured during the armed attack in Almaty, have been hospitalized, said Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Healthcare and Social Development July 18. Their condition is listed as serious, said the ministry.

Kazakh media reported about a shooting near the Almaly District Interior Department in the center of Almaty July 18 morning. Four people, including three police officers and one civilian, were killed.

The suspect was arrested by the police. An operation is underway to detain the criminal’s accomplice.
Not clear if this is WoT or random violence in a far-away place. We'll see...
Here's Al Ahram's take on the fog of gunfire:
Gunmen killed two policemen in Kazakhstan's financial capital Almaty on Monday, security sources and the Interior Ministry told Reuters, as the authorities said they had launched an anti-terrorist operation. The Interfax news agency, quoting a police source, said "a religious radical and probably a follower of non-traditional Islam", was on the rampage in central Almaty, opening fire from time to time.

Two witnesses told Reuters they had heard shots in several areas in the centre of Almaty, the mainly Muslim country's biggest city.

"We saw a man with a rifle, he passed by," one shop worker said by phone.

Police cordoned off several central streets, including the one near a local office of the KNB security police, where shots were also heard.

"I heard one shot, most probably, fired from a pistol," said one man standing nearby.

At least one attacker had been detained by the police, the RIA news agency quoted a security source as saying. It said several policemen had also been wounded.

Kazakhstan, an oil rich-rich nation of 18 million, is far more prosperous than its post-Soviet neighbours in Central Asia. President Nursultan Nazarbayev, 76, has ruled it with a firm hand since 1989, making stability his motto. But the country has recently seen outbreaks of violence, initially triggered by discontent over proposed land reforms.

The KNB, successor to the Soviet-era KGB, said last month it had detained several members of a group which planned "terrorist acts using improvised explosive devices", following a deadly attack in the northwestern town of Aktobe. In that incident, about two dozen men described by the authorities as sympathisers of Islamic State, attacked gun stores and a national guard facility, killing seven people. Security forces killed 18 attackers, some on the same day and some in the subsequent manhunt.

Migrants injured in mass brawl at Hungary refugee camp
[AlAhram] Eight people were hospitalised after a mass brawl involving some 200 migrants colonists broke out at a migrant camp in Hungary Sunday, a senior government official said.

A group of around 20 asylum-seekers -- including Algerians, Syrians, Paks, and Mongolians -- triggered the violence when they exchanged blows before attacking each other using furniture, said Gyorgy Bakondi, chief advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The incident happened at around 8 pm (1800 GMT) in Kiskunhalas, 150 kilometres (95 miles) south of the capital Budapest, close to the southern border with Serbia.

As many as 200 police were needed to restore order, Bakondi told state news agency MTI.

Nine people sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The Kiskunhalas facility is one of three closed camps in Hungary where claims by asylum-seekers are processed. An estimated 740 migrants colonists were kept in the camps in June, according to refugee rights group the Hungarian Helsinki Committee.

Around 400,000 migrants colonists and refugees passed through Hungary in 2015 before Orban's right-wing government sealed its southern borders with razor wire and fences in the autumn.

Numbers have been rising sharply again in recent months however, rising to a total of around 17,500 by the end of June.

Earlier this month, Budapest introduced new security measures including the forced return to no-man's land between Hungary and Serbia of any migrant found within eight kilometres (five miles) of the southern border .

In a report released in mid-July, Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
(HRW) denounced Hungary for "cruel and violent treatment" of migrants colonists in April and May, accusing police and soldiers of beating people before forcibly expelling them back into Serbia.

The government rejected the claims, saying HRW was "misconstruing the rules relating to the asylum proceedings out of obvious ignorance of the situation".

#1  before Orban's right-wing government sealed its southern borders

The media must make sure we all know this is a bad government. Not a regular government, a right-wing government.

#3  Not like this is a new development. I have a Croatian friend who ended up in a refugee camp in Germany in the early 60's; he mentioned that the Serbs and Croats would fight each other, but both would join up to fight the Kosovans.
