FBI chief: Success against ISIS means more terror
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.
Battlefield success against ISIS may produce more terrorism for the West, FBI Director James Comey warned this week.

Speaking to a cybersecurity conference at Fordham University Wednesday, Comey predicted that eventually crushing ISIS in its self-proclaimed caliphate in Syria and Iraq will likely result in dispersing terrorists elsewhere.

"At some point there is going to be a terrorist diaspora out of Syria like we've never seen before," Comey said. "Not all of the Islamic State killers are going to die on the battlefield."

The FBI director's warning that the collapse of the caliphate will mean increased attacks in Western Europe and the United States mirrors a consensus among intelligence officials.

Comey compared it to the formation of al Qaeda, which drew from fighters who had been hardened and radicalized fighting the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980s and early 1990s.

"This is an order of magnitude greater than anything we've seen before" Comey said. "A lot of terrorists fled out of Afghanistan... this is 10 times that or more.

"We saw the future of this threat in Brussels and in Paris (attacks earlier this year)."

And just not in the West. There have recently been stepped up ISIS attacks worldwide, including in countries near its home base territory that has been shrinking due to military losses in Iraq and Syria.

In the last several weeks, there have been mass casualty killings at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida; the Istanbul airport in Turkey, a café in Bangladesh, a market in Baghdad, the Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France; a protest in Afghanistan and on Tuesday, the murder of an elderly priest in Normandy, France, all carried out by ISIS fighters or in the name of ISIS.

CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen blames a more complex regional breakdown for sowing the attacks.

He notes that the fracturing of authority in Iraq, Syria and Yemen has produced a massive migration of Muslims from those regions to Europe, which prompted reactionary political parties there to rail against them.

In France they live in largely segregated communities where youth unemployment can run as high as 45%.

"Many French Muslims live in grim banlieues, the suburbs of large French cities (similar to housing projects in the United States), where they find themselves largely divorced from mainstream French society," Bergen writes. "All these feed into ISIS' narrative that Muslims are under attack by the West and also by the Shia as well as by any Muslim who doesn't share their extremist ideology."

CIA Director John Brennan recently told Congress it was still critical to take away ISIS' safe haven territory because it gave the group a base for training operatives and raising revenue.

At the end of May, ISIS' chief spokesman and ideologue, Abu Mohammed al Adnani, tried to reframe how ISIS defines victory. In an audio message, he said defeat would not result from losing control of cities but from "losing the will and the desire to fight."

One Western counterterrorism official predicted "a metastasis of terror as it becomes increasingly difficult for ISIL (another acronym for ISIS) to hold on to core territories."

#8  The main fallacy here is that ISIS is the problem. It's just a brand like AQ, and new brands will pop up when ISIS is defeated.

The problem is unreformed Sunni Islam. Wars were fought for hundreds of years over the Christian Reformation. Unfortunately, the Sunni Reformation could well be fought with nuclear weapons.

Dodgers ballgirl saves phone-using fan from taking a 108.7 mph line drive to the head

A spectator seated in the first row at Dodger Stadium should be forever grateful of the ballgirl who worked Sunday's game between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.

During the eighth inning, Arizona's Brandon Drury scorched a line drive foul towards the left-field stands. The ballgirl saw the baseball the entire way and made an outstanding backhanded catch. She calmly caught the ball and handed it to the fan in the blue shirt.

In the slow-motion replay, that same fan in the blue can be seen with his head down, likely looking at the phone he was holding in his left hand. It wasn't until after the ballgirl's sensational catch that the fan flinched or reacted to a baseball traveling towards his head.

Statcast registered the liner at 108.7 mph.

That trip to the ballpark could have ended terribly if not for the ballgirl's quick reaction.

Vin Scully certainly appreciated the catch. I'm sure that fan's face did as well.

#3  Took my daughter to TOR@KC last year after her season ended.

The fans, it was like watching a prairie dog town.

I watched all those games on TV, wishing I was there....get there, and all those fans watching the game on TV (phone, whatever).

I can get some of it - playoffs are in the air, likely playoff matchup, watch a replay, text-5 your friends, photo with the mascot, photo of the packed stadium, so forth.

I just do not think an attendee gets the full experience when poking their head in the cloud every 15 seconds.

Put the phone down, grab a beer and nachos, some BBQ if lucky enough to be in KC, and stay off my lawn.

No, the thing that got me was the chucklehead who acted like I was ruining his phone time by talking to my daughter about defensive positioning.

Russian spies claim they can now collect crypto keys‐but don't say how
Russia's intelligence agency the FSB, successor to the KGB, has posted a notice on its website claiming that it now has the ability to collect crypto keys for Internet services that use encryption. This meets a two-week deadline given by Vladimir Putin to the FSB to develop such a capability. However, no details have been provided of how the FSB is able to do this.

The FSB's announcement follows the passage of Russia's wide-ranging surveillance law, which calls for metadata and content to be stored for six months, plus access to encrypted services, as Ars reported back in June.

The new capability seems to go even further, since the FSB notice (in Russian) speaks of obtaining the "information necessary for decoding the electronic messaging received, sent, delivered, and (or) processed by users of the 'Internet' network."

Being able to decode Internet communications would seem to imply getting hold of any crypto keys that are used. However, as an article on The Daily Dot points out, it is still not clear what the new laws will require: "No one seems to know what this new law means in the slightest. Or, more accurately, the people who do know are keeping mum."

Three of the services that are likely to be most affected by the new requirements are Facebook's WhatsApp, Telegram, and Viber. Ars has asked all three for clarification on what the Russian authorities have asked for, and what information the companies are or will be providing, but has not yet received any reply. This post will be updated with responses when they are received.

The Daily Dot quotes Russian technologist Anton Nesterov as saying that it's not even clear whether the new legislation applies to VPNs or basic SSL keys, nor whether mainstream electronic payment systems must hand over their keys as a matter of routine.

Nesterov also points out the dangers involved in providing this information, not least because leaks of such valuable data are always a risk.

Accused burglar found dead, tied to tree in Alabama
LEROY, AL. -- An Alabama homeowner is being questioned, after an accused burglar is found dead and tied to a tree.

Deputies say 68-year-old Nathaniel Johnson caught the suspect breaking in, so he tackled him and tied him to the tree. Johnson told the Washington County Sheriff's Office he used electrical wires to tie up 31-year-old Cleveland Gulley.

According to WKRG-TV, Gulley would not stop talking, so Johnson put duct tape over his mouth and went to his neighbor to get help.

When investigators arrived about 15 minutes later, Gulley was dead. That's when he said he went to go to a neighbor's and call for help.

When deputies arrived, the accused thief was dead.

Russian helicopter shot down in Syria, killing all 5 onboard
[WAPO] MOSCOW -- A Russian transport helicopter was shot down in Syria on Monday and all five people onboard were killed, the Kremlin said, in the deadliest single incident for the Russian military since its involvement in Syria’s civil war.

The Mi-8 helicopter was shot down in Idlib province while returning to the Russian air base on Syria’s coast after delivering humanitarian goods to the city of Aleppo, the Defense Ministry said in a statement. The helicopter had three crew members and two officers deployed with the Russian center at the Hemeimeem air base on the Syrian coast.

"From what we know from information provided by the Defense Ministry, all those who were on the helicopter died," Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman told journalists. The ministry statement released earlier said their fate was still unknown.

Chinese state paper calls for military strike on Aussie ships that enter the South China Sea
China’s state-run Global Times has published an editorial attacking Australia for supporting the recent international ruling on China’s activities in the South China Sea and called for strikes on any Australian ships which might undertake “freedom-of-navigation” activities in the region.

The editorial said Australia “is not even a ‘paper tiger’, it’s only a ‘paper cat’ at best”. It says that even though “Australia calls itself a principled country… when it needs to please Washington, it demonstrates willingness of doing anything in a show of allegiance”.

Global Times says:

China must take revenge and let it know it’s wrong. Australia’s power means nothing compared to the security of China. If Australia steps into the South China Sea waters, it will be an ideal target for China to warn and strike.

Earlier this year, the Commander of the US Seventh Fleet, Vice Admiral Joseph P Aucoin, said it would be in the “best interests” of the region if Australia was to send ships to within 12 miles of the disputed area. Australia has so far not sent any of its ships there.

The editorial notes Australia’s strong economic ties with China as “its biggest trading partner” makes the reaction to the recent ruling of “disturbing the South China Sea waters surprising to many”.

It said Australia’s reaction to the ruling was “delirious” has called Australia a nation with an “inglorious history” which was “an offshore prison for the UK… established through uncivilised means, in a process filled with the tears of the aboriginals”.

In an effort to undermine any moral authority the Australian government might claim, both as a result of the recent ruling on the South China Sea on any reliance on democratic principles, the Global Times also referenced Australia’s claims over Antarctic territory as an example of this claimed hypocrisy. It said Australia’s claims in Antarctica “showed blunt double standards as if no one had a memory of what it did and said over the Antarctic”.

Bernie's supporters are abandoning the Democrat Party and are voting for Trump
[Liberty Alliance] Awesome! Bernie’s supporters are fired up. They were hosed by the Democrat Party, and they are leaving in droves, many now planning to vote for Donald Trump.

In this video Bernie supporters make some very good points. One young man claimed that Bernie supporters and Trump supporters stand for some of the same things, which is true, especially Plank #1, that the status quo establishment is corrupt and looking out for themselves only, to hell with the people.

Where Trump and Bernie differ is in the solutions to the problems created by the "good ol’ boy" corrupt establishment. While Bernie believes we can tax our way to prosperity and build an even larger, more voracious beast (our federal government) along the way, Trump believes the opposite. He has studied the JFK/Reagan model of lower taxes equals greater incentive within the private sector, thus a burgeoning economy and greater volume of tax revenue, and although it may be counterintuitive, it is historically proven, and The Donald plans to return to this proven fiscal sanity.

It is also Trump’s plan, in strike contrast to Bernie’s, to drastically cut our federal government spending and regulations, to balance the budget finally, and begin the process of shrinking the voracious beast to its intended servile function.

Belgian Priest Stabbed by "Asylum Seeker" In his Own Home After Offering the Man Assistance
[Gateway Pundit] Belgian priest Jos Vanderlee, suffered several wounds after an asylum seeker stabbed him in his own home. The man asked Father Jos for a shower to clean up then stabbed the priest after he wouldn't give the man his money.

A priest has been stabbed in his own home by an asylum seeker he allowed in to use his shower ‐ according to local prosecutors. The priest - named locally as 65-year-old Jos Vanderlee -suffered injuries to his hands during the incident in Lanaken, Belgium.

Public Prosecutor of Limburg Coppin Bruno said the attack happened at around 2.40pm local time (1.40pm UK time) but have stressed they do not believe it was terror-related.

Prosecutors say the suspect had knocked on the priest's home to ask for a shower and help. After the shower the man allegedly asked for money and stabbed the priest when he said no.

The attacker is then said to have fled the scene.

There's a sensation building over the Democratic convention speech of Khizr Khan, a Pakistani-born Virginia lawyer whose son Humayun was killed in action while serving as a captain in the U.S. Army in Iraq in 2004.

In seven minutes on the national stage, Khan, a naturalized U.S. citizen who came to this country in 1980, excoriated Trump for proposals to build a wall along the Mexican border and to temporarily ban the entry of foreign Muslims into the U.S.

"Let me ask you: Have you even read the United States Constitution?" Khan said to Trump. "I will gladly lend you my copy. In this document, look for the words 'liberty' and 'equal protection of law.'"

...It may be that building a wall, deporting illegal immigrants, and temporarily banning the entry of foreign Muslims are all terrible policies. But among the Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans touting Khan's performance there appears to be a belief that if something is a terrible policy, it must also be unconstitutional. That's not necessarily so.
Leaving aside some relevant facts, IMO, cognitive elites simply don't understand the use of probability theory in making decisions.

I was surprised that a NY law office would list a D.C. telephone number, so I called it to check and was told by the man who answered it was not Khazir Khan's law office, but the man who answered would not tell me who it was.

So I did more digging and learned that is also the phone number of a group called American Muslims Vote, which says its mission is to:

To create an enlightened community by providing and developing Patriotic American Muslim leadership and Encouraging American Muslims to participate in the democratic process at local, state and national level and vote on the election day.

I did some further research into who registered this domain name and when? Khizr Khan registered it on July 23, 2016.

He's looking increasingly like a plant to me -- a Muslim Cindy Sheehan playing on people's sympathies to foster a Democratic Party political agenda. And of course, in that goal he has the full throated support of the American media:

I'm not entirely sure, but I suspect the Democrats have simply decided they won't get quite as much mileage using Hispanics as their "Officially Recognized Poor Helpless Victim Identity Group" as they will using Muslims.

They still pander to Hispanics and the cause of unrestricted immigration, of course, but it seems clear that for the time being, they've chosen Muslims as their Pander Partners.

Continuing to attack the Khans just keeps the spotlight on them, instead of on Hillary. Its basic Clausewitz - you want to concentrate your attacks on decisive points of your choosing. The Khan's are the Dems choice of fight, they have the press lined up to help them with this. Beating the Khans are hardly a decisive victory if you "defeat" them. In this video of a weekly demonstration near Modiin Illit, shot yesterday, you see a Palestinian father urging his young son toward a group of IDF soldiers, yelling at them to shoot him, as explained here. What greater honor for a four-year-old boy than to be on the evening news as a "martyr"? The soldiers don’t take the bait; I interpret their reaction as one of disbelief. One of them shakes hands with the boy. The father yells at his son to throw rocks at the soldiers, but he can’t throw hard enough to do any damage.
Happened to me in intifada I. Except it was an older sister, not a father. That was the day I stopped being a Libertarian.

BLUF: [Breitbart] Using data from 2009 of pregnancy outcomes -- including estimates of induced abortions as collected by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and deaths due to all causes -- the researchers report that induced abortions represented only 16.4 percent of NHW deaths, but 61.1 percent of NHB deaths and 64.0 percent of Hispanic deaths.

"For Hispanics and NHB, deaths from abortion are 4.2 and 3.5 times, respectively, the number of deaths from all diseases of the heart and malignant neoplasms combined," they write.

The authors find that for Hispanic and blacks, abortion deaths were 79.3 and 57.5 times the number of homicide deaths, respectively and, for whites, abortion deaths were 12.4 times the number of suicide deaths.

[IsraelTimes] A Palestinian man attempted to stab Israel Defense Forces soldiers outside the Palestinian city of Nablus on Sunday before troops shot and killed him, the army said. There were no other injuries in the incident, which took place at the Hawara checkpoint near the entrance to the northern West Bank city.

According to the IDF, after the assailant reached the checkpoint, he exited his car and began running towards the soldiers holding a knife. Israeli soldiers manning the checkpoint shot him dead at the scene.

The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the assailant as 31-year-old Rami Awartani.

Muhammad Abu Khdeir’s relatives charged with attacking cop

[IsraelTimes] Two relatives of a Palestinian youth murdered two years ago were charged Sunday with a laundry list of crimes, including attempted assault of police officers, throwing rocks at cars, public disturbance, arson and discharging a weapon in a residential area.

Muhammad and Nasser Abu Khdeir, 21 and 19, respectively, of the Shuafat neighborhood in East Jerusalem, were indicted at the Jerusalem District Court for the alleged crimes said to have been perpetrated two summers ago, after their relative was murdered by Israeli extremists. Prosecutors requested that the two be held until the end of proceedings.

Muhammed Abu Khdeir was abducted and killed in East Jerusalem on July 1, 2014, by three Israeli attackers. An autopsy found that the 16-year-old had been burned alive. The Jerusalem District Court handed down a life sentence, plus 20 years in jail, to Yosef Ben David, found to be the ringleader of the group that murdered Abu Khdeir. The two other killers — both minors — were sentenced to life in prison and 21 years, respectively.

IDF detains 4 Palestinians after ‘security alert’ in Beersheba

[IsraelTimes] Israeli security forces detained four Palestinian men suspected of planning a terror attack with an ax south of Hebron in the West Bank on Sunday, an army spokesperson said.

Earlier in the day, the Israel Police received advanced intelligence about the threat of a possible attack involving an ax in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. Dozens of officers were sent into the area to provide additional protection, a police spokesperson said.

Following the “security alert,” troops in the West Bank discovered an abandoned vehicle with an ax inside it near the Khirbat Umm al-Khair village in the Hebron Hills, an army spokesperson said. Soldiers searched the area for the car’s owners and found four men who appeared to have fled from the vehicle. They were brought in for questioning, the spokesperson said.

Last week, a 36-year-old Palestinian man in Israel without a permit called police to tell them he had a knife and was planning to carry out an attack against Israelis. Officers arrested the West Bank resident after tracing the phone call and determining his location. A body search of the man uncovered a knife in his possession. He was remanded into custody at a Beersheba court, where he repeated his intentions to attack Israelis. The Palestinian man, who was not named, was indicted on charges of illegally entering Israel, possession of a knife and making threats.

In a separate incident last week, a 19-year-old Palestinian man called the Israel Police hotline and told officers: “I have a knife.” He was arrested outside the Negev Bedouin town of Hura and taken in for questioning. The suspect was indicted at a Beersheba court later in the week on unspecified charges, police said. It wasn’t clear if he was in Israel legally.

Turkey will shut down its military academies and put the armed forces under the command of the defence minister, President Tayyip Erdogan said in a move designed to bring the military under tighter government control after a failed coup.

The changes come after more than 1700 military personnel were dishonourably discharged for their role in the abortive July 15-16 putsch. Erdogan, who narrowly escaped capture and possible death on the night of the coup, told Reuters in an interview last week that the military, NATO’s second-biggest, needed “fresh blood”.

Both the general staff and the intelligence agency now report to the prime minister’s office. Putting them under the president’s overall direction would be in line with Erdogan’s push for a new constitution centred on a strong executive presidency.

Turkey Dismisses 1,400 Troops as Erdogan Tightens Grip

[AnNahar] Turkey's government on Sunday dismissed nearly 1,400 military personnel, including a top aide to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in the latest round of a sweeping purge following a failed coup.

The announcement in the official gazette came as Erdogan sought to tighten his grip over the country.

Erdogan's aide-de-camp Ali Yazici, who was arrested five days after the July 15 putsch, was among the 1,389 dismissed by a new decree in the official gazette. Chief-of-staff Hulusi Akar's aide-de-camp Levent Turkkan and Defense Minister Fikri Isik's executive assistant Tevfik Gok were also discharged.

The new decree also confirmed his announcement that a new national military university would be established within the defense ministry. Military hospitals are to come under the control of the health ministry.

Anadolu meanwhile said Turkey's deputy prime ministers and the ministers for justice, interior and foreign affairs have all become members of the Supreme Military Council, which determines the armed forces' agenda.

Twin PKK Attacks Kill 4 Turkish Soldiers

Kirkuk security forces face off brazen ISIS attack on gas compound

(ISIS) who launched an attack against the Bay Hassan gas supply compound Sunday morning, killing at least four coppers and civil servants.

Brigadier Sarhad Qadir of the Kirkuk suburban police told Rudaw that three jacket wallahs blew themselves up inside the compound, wounding three coppers and one Peshmerga soldier, among them Lieutenant Fayaq Chuchani, head of the compound.

"Fire has broken out inside the compound and more suicide bombers are suspected to be in there," Brig. Qadir said.

Bay Hassan is a major source of oil and gas west of Kirkuk. Security officials believe the snuffies aimed at blowing up the wells.

Earlier in the day, Kamal Krikuki, a Peshmerga commander in the region told Rudaw that a force had been dispatched to Bay Hassan to help the police repel the ISIS attack and defend the area.

Security officials said that the suicide bombers who numbered six were members of the group’s secret cell.

A Peshmerga officer said that six snuffies had infiltrated the compound and spent 1.5 hours planting bombs around the installation.

The name of the compound is K2 and within the Peshmerga-controlled territory.

Peshmerga colonel, Shwan Hama Gharib told Rudaw that they had information of a planned ISIS attack on the area the day before, but unsure of the exact location.

"Since yesterday we had information on ISIS movements and that they had plans to attack the Peshmerga defense lines or some important locations and therefore we focused more on our lines and civilian areas," Col. Hama Gharib said.

Col. Hama Gharib deployed his forces Sunday morning to reinforce the Bay Hassan area.

He added that the snuffies had only attacked the gas compound after they had failed to breach the fortified Peshmerga defense lines.

"At 2:00 am we were informed that AB2 compound had been attacked," Col. Hama Gharib reported. "The snuffies were not able to attack the fortified the places and therefore went to an area that had fewer guards and they succeeded in that."

"Before we reached the compound they had already killed four workers and there was the fear of bombing having been planted which was exactly the case," he added.

Col. Hama Gharib explained that collecting intelligence on ISIS is not an easy task due to the vastness of the area and lack of cooperation from some of the Arab villagers "who support the snuffies and shelter them, too."

Refugees escaping ISIS control arrive in Hakasah

[ARA News] HASAKAH – Over 7.6 million Syrians have been internally displaced between the different provinces of the war-torn country, as fighting continues between the various armed groups across Syria, according to the United Nations humanitarian agency.

Deir ez-Zor province, where the Assad regime and the Islamic State group (ISIS) share control, has witnessed a mass displacement among civilians amid mounting violence.

More than five years have passed since thousands have been displaced from the Deir ez-Zor province, taking shelter in the northeastern Hasakah province. Some of them took shelter in school buildings that have been evacuated for them in Hasakah city. Local sources told ARA News that the displaced are encountering hard living conditions there, lacking basic supplies amid inability by the local aid organisations to provide sufficient help to thousands of displaced families.

Speaking to ARA News, Zainab Laila, a displaced woman from Deir ez-Zor who recently arrived to Hasakah, said: “We suffer shortage of basic supplies such as water. Here we’re obliged to buy water for 150 Lira per barrel. As for food, in the past we’ve been provided with food supplies and other aid every two or three months. However, now we barely find someone to give us some food. This is our life under those hard conditions.”

Some of them try to find a work in Hasakah city in order to cover daily needs of their families, but the law wages prevent them from providing their families with the basic supplies.

Ahmed Biebi, a displaced Syrian man from Deir ez-Zor, told ARA News: “I’m here with my wife and six daughters, and I cannot afford the basic needs for my family.”

“Prior to displacement I was employee, but I haven’t received my salary since more than two years. Now in this situation I need to find any job in order to be able to support my family,” he said.

“I hereby appeal to the international organisations to provide us with help, either work opportunities or aid. Those displaced families need support in order to survive this crisis,” Biebi told ARA News.

Thousands of displaced Syrian families have found a safe haven in Hasakah province for years. However, the recent surge of violence that hit the province has made it harder for the people, causing a state of instability even among its own inhabitants.

“The situation here [in Hasakah] is just a sample for the difficulties that the Syrian people encounter,” Laila said. “Nowhere is save inside this country. We became victims of this bloody war, and every armed group only cares about seizing more control, no matter how many innocent lives that would cost.”

ISIS mutilates man it says was a thief

[ARA News] RAQQA – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Sunday punished a young Syrian man in the northeastern city of Raqqa by cutting off his right hand after accusing him of theft, activists reported.

Two ISIS militants carried out the punishment in front of dozens of people in a public square in Raqqa city.

“The man’s right hand was amputated after the ISIS-linked Hisba police accused him of stealing, but they didn’t explain what this young man has exactly stolen,” a media activist told ARA News in Raqqa, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A member of the ISIS-led Sharia Court read a statement prior to conducting the punishment on Sunday afternoon, saying that the Islamic Sharia recommends the amputation of the right hand of any citizen charged with theft.

“This kind of punishment is barbaric. It is merely meant to terrify people, besides the ISIS-led sharia court doesn’t have the basic capabilities to investigate any such case,” Syrian human rights activist Omar al-Muthanna told ARA News.

“They accuse and punish people publicly to show that they’re still in control and have the power to establish order, especially in Raqqa, which is the de facto capital of their alleged Caliphate,” Muthanna said.

Normandy REFUSES to give Muslim burial to priest killers
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] Adel Kermiche and Abdelmalik Petitjean will not be given a Moslem burial by locals who say they do not want to "taint" Islam.

Both men who entered the Normandy church acted in accordance as they slit 84-year old priest Fr Jacques Hamel's throat on the altar while he was conducting morning mass.

Now furious locals are turning their backs on the men.

Mohammed Karabila, imam of one of the town's mosques, told Le Gay Pareeien: "We're not going to taint Islam with this person.

"We won't participate in preparing the body or the burial."

And two of the nuns who were held hostage have now spoken for the first time of the terror attack and revealed the men were smiling as they committed the murder.

Singapore detains Daesh promoter
[Gulf Today] Singapore said on Friday it has detained an Australia-based Singaporean who allegedly glorified Daesh. Zulfikar Mohamad Shariff is being held under the Internal Security Act for being a threat to national security, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a statement.

"Zulfikar has made use of social media to propagate and spread his radical messages," the statement said in announcing his arrest this month.

Zulfikar's posts led to the radicalization of two other Singaporeans, a businessman and a security guard, the ministry said.

Zulfikar moved to Australia with his family in 2002. It is not clear why he returned to Singapore.

Zulfikar had also been supportive of terror groups like Al-Qaeda and its Southeast Asian affiliate Jemaah Islamiyah, according to the ministry. In Australia, he joined the Hizbut Tahrir while keeping in contact with radical imams and making "numerous Facebook postings glorifying and promoting the Daesh group," it added.

He set up a Facebook page called Al-Makhazin Singapore which he used as a platform to "agitate on Muslim issues" with a "real agenda" to replace Singapore's government with a Daesh state.

Following recent terror strikes worldwide, Singapore's leaders have renewed warnings that an attack on the country, is not a matter of if but when.

JMB denies involvement in Gulshan, Sholakia attacks
[Dhaka Tribune] Refuting the claims by police, a faction of banned murderous Moslem group Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) said their members were not involved in the recent terror attacks in Gulshan and Sholakia that killed at least 25 people, including 17 foreign nationals.

The murderous Moslem group made the claim on Sunday as they sent two memory cards to the Bangla Tribune office describing the attacks. The outfit has also changed its logo.

The law enforcers have been blaming the JMB ‐ formed in 1998 and banned in 2005 ‐ for the July 1 attack on a Gulshan restaurant and the July 7 attack on the police near Sholakia Eid congregation in Kishoreganj.

In the memory cards, the JMB faction, led by runaway death-row convict Salauddin alias Salehin alias Sajeeb, also gave a statement claiming responsibilities for all the attacks they had carried out during 2002-2016.

Chief of the DMP’s Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes unit Monirul Islam said that they would scrutinise the statement. "We have much information about the activities of this new group," he said.

The Dhaka Tribune on July 10 published two reports based on the statement where the group admitted ‐ for the first time ‐ their involvement in over 1,100 attacks, mostly targeting NGOs, secularists, non-Moslems, Pirs and shrines, and courts and law enforcers.

The statement was first published in a Facebook page on June 27 and later found in a jihadi discussion platform named "Dawahilallah."

On the other hand, al-Qaeda affiliate Ansarullah Bangla Team or Ansar Al Islam took credit for 13 attacks since 2013 that killed 11 secularists and injured at least five others.

Militants also attacked the nearby Bai Hassan oilfield, the largest in oil-rich Kirkuk province, killing an engineer and causing a major fire, officials said. Attacks inside Kurdish-controlled areas of the province are rare.

A peshmerga colonel said security forces had killed two suicide bombers at the oilfield. A third detonated explosives, setting oil tanks ablaze, and a fourth was still at large.

Brig Gen Sarhad Qader confirmed that three bombers were dead. An engineer was also killed in the assault and seven people were wounded, according to the peshmerga colonel.

The jihadi-linked Amaq agency, which often carries claims of Islamic State attacks, said the assault on Bai Hassan had taken place, but did not attribute it to Isis.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack on the gas facility. It may have been carried out by Isis, but it is more common for the group’s militants to fight to the death in such assaults.

Forces from Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region control part of Kirkuk and Isis also holds territory in the province.

SDF now control 40 percent of Manbij city, says conflict monitor
[RUDAW.NET] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) group has successfully captured 40 percent of the strategically-important city of Manbij from Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS), after their recent pushes into the city allowed them to seize key areas from the turbans.

With coalition air support the SDF pushed further into the city taking most of its eastern parts, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights conflict monitor reported on Sunday. They are now in control of the al-Jazira turning, Mestosaf neighbourhood, and Ghasania school, according to the Observatory.

Spokesperson for the SDF, Shervan Derwish, said that his forces are in control of more than 70% of Manbij.

At least 2,300 civilians in the city have been able to leave thanks to these SDF advances. ISIS has shot at civilians who attempted to flee.

Women who have made it out of Manbij have taken off their black robes and burned them, celebrating their freedom from Islamic State rule, according to images published by Derwish.

The SDF have had the city encircled for months now after beginning their offensive against ISIS faceless myrmidons in that region in late May. Seizing Manbij from ISIS will further isolate the group’s main stronghold in Syria, the city of Raqqa.

Progress into Manbij city has been slow in spite of the coalition air support. The SDF offered ISIS an ultimatum whereby the faceless myrmidons would be allowed safe passage out of the city with their light weaponry in order to save civilian lives. ISIS refused their offer and remains dug-in.

The US has come under severe criticism over reports that their Arclight airstrikes have killed civilians in that city.

On Friday the Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook addressed these concerns, emphasizing that air support to the SDF would continue and that ISIS are responsible for placing civilians in harm’s way.

"They [ISIS] are not taking steps to protect civilians ‐ innocent civilian life," Cook explained.

"Well, those local forces we’re supporting might have a different view if we weren’t conducting those Arclight airstrikes in their support," he added. "I imagine you would be asking me some of the same questions if those forces came under attack from ISIS, because we weren’t providing some of the air support to them."

Iraq minister says ISIL leaders, families flee Mosul
Iraq’s Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi has said that Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) leaders and their families have sold their belongings and ran away fled Mosul as Iraqi forces close in on the northern city.

Iraqi forces are conducting operations to set the stage for an assault on Mosul, the country’s second city that has been held by ISIL since June 2014, but the final push to retake it is likely still months away.

“A number of the families... and leaders of [ISIL] in Mosul, they and their families sold their belongings and withdrew towards Syria,” whose border west of the city, Obeidi told Iraqiya state television.

Some also sought to infiltrate towards Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region, located north and east of Mosul, Obeidi said during an interview which was broadcast on July 30 night.

Mosul is the last city held by ISIL in Iraq, but retaking it poses a major challenge, and the operation could unleash a humanitarian crisis unless plans are made for people who would likely flee the fighting. The Red Thingy Cross has said it believes that up to a million Iraqis could be displaced in the coming months by fighting against ISIL, including the operation to recapture Mosul.
If the civilians have remained after this long in a Mosul under ISIL rule, there's a reason why. Sure, some might just have been stuck, but a fair number might be happy with ISIL rule. I won't have much sympathy for them...
ISIL overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but has since lost significant ground to Iraqi forces backed by U.S.-led air strikes, training and other assistance.

Niger extends state of emergency in Diffa region hit by Boko Haram

Attacks by Boko Haram since late May have emptied the towns of Bosso and Yebi near the Nigeria border in the Lake Chad region. Some 69,000 have fled, according to a report on Friday by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

"Despite the various extensions of the state of emergency in the region of Diffa and bloody setbacks inflicted on it, the Boko Haram sect still continues to have a destructive capacity as evidenced by the recent attacks in Bosso," the government said in a statement.

Boko Haram took the town of Bosso near the Nigerian border in early June, in an attack that killed 30 soldiers from Niger and two. It was the deadliest assault in Niger by Boko Haram since April 2015. Since then, Chad has sent troops to help Niger wage a counterattack.

The state of emergency, which the government hopes will allow it to beef up its presence in the region with troops and added security measures, will now run to Oct. 25. It is the latest in a series of such declarations in the Diffa region since February last year.

Court orders DNA test of Kallyanpur militants
[Dhaka Tribune] A Dhaka Court has ordered for DNA test of the nine bully boyz killed in a shootout with law-enforcers in Kallyanpur in the capital on July 26.

Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Mazharul Islam passed the order on Sunday after Police Inspector Md Jahangir Alam of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit filed three petitions seeking the permission.The police inspector filed the three petitions--one for DNA test, one for collecting profiles of the bully boyz and another for testing of urine, stool, hair and clothes of the hard boys.

Allowing the three petitions, the court ordered for DNA test and to arrange test of urine, stool, hair and clothes of the hard boys.

According to the case, an operation called ’Storm 26’ was carried out in the 6-storey building, locally known as Jahaz Bari in Kallyanpur area around 5:45am on July 26. A total of nine suspected bully boyz were killed in the operation.

After the incident, police filed a case with Mirpur cop shoppe under the anti-terrorism act.

Iraqi parliament passes bill banning Baath party
[RUDAW.NET] In a parliamentary session on Saturday, the Iraqi Parliament officially passed a bill banning the Baath party from any political activity across the country.

"Banning the Baath party is a great success for the nation and families of deaders in Iraq because this party committed the most vicious crimes," against civilians when it was in power, said Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in a congratulatory message to the people of Iraq.

Abadi continued, "The crimes of this party continue alongside forces of Evil and their acts have resulted in a large number of victims."

An Iraqi MP said that banning the party is the least that can be done to the party of Saddam Hussein when considering the crimes committed against the people of Iraq under Baath rule.

A general who was in charge of managing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's overseas slush funds is said to be in China after escaping from his country, and is seeking political asylum with two other North Koreans in a country other than South Korea. A source said that the three were separated from a diplomat from Pyongyang, who is seeking his own defection to another country.

A source in China, who works in collaboration with Seoul government officials, on Thursday revealed the recent defection of the general, a diplomat and two others. The source said that the North Korean military officer was in charge of managing Kim Jong-un’s slush funds in Southeast Asia.

The general was in China on a business trip when he was joined by the three other North Koreans on July 12th. The diplomat is known to have parted ways with the group and is seeking political asylum in a country other than South Korea, while the other three are staying in China, making their own plans to defect to another country.
No sense going home when your companions have defected...
The latest escape marks the first known case of a North Korean general's defection from the reclusive regime. Last year, a North Korean colonel defected to the South.

The source said the four didn't choose to defect to South Korea partly because of a petition by the Lawyers for a Democratic Society filed last month for habeas corpus relief of 12 North Korean restaurant workers in China who defected to Seoul in April.

The source said that the four North Koreans decided to leave their country due to their dissatisfaction with the Kim Jong-un regime and pessimistic views about the future of the country.
Right now we can only hope that the general is being debriefed by CIA and Treasury agents. All the information he carries in his head, laptop and cell phone are being copied. All account numbers, amounts, and bank information will be very useful to cross-check what we already know.

What people might not get is that new compliance rules implemented by the Treasury Department and EU bank regulators, as a result of the new sanctions, make it very difficult for a bank to do business with anyone who does business with North Korea and stay open. Simply demonstrate that Pudgy or one of his minions has an account at a bank, and that bank risks closure. They'll cooperate. But first we need to know which accounts, and for that this new defection is just excellent news.

Ex Solon shot to death in Kabul
A former Afghan lawmaker has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Kabul city in the latest wave of target killings which has been on the rise amid deteriorating security situation.

According to the security officials, the former lawmaker Dr. Asadullah Hematyar was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the vicinity of Stanikzai Meena.

The police district#6 police chief Mohammad Dawood Paktiawal said the gunmen opened fire on Dr. Hematyar near his clinic.

Hematyar was representing the central Logar province in the Lower House of the Parliament, Wolesi Jirga and was working as a physician when he was assassinated.

The main motive behind his assassination has not been ascertained and no group has so far claimed responsibility behind the attack.

The attack on Dr. Hematyar followed a day after a magnetic bomb explosion targeted a vehicle carrying the head of the HR department of the Afghan parliament, leaving him dead along with another individual.

Another prominent Afghan lawmaker Sher Wali Wardak was also killed in an explosion in Kabul city earlier last month.

MP Wardak was killed after an explosive device was planted in an electricity tower close to his residence.

The Taliban group claimed responsibility behind the attack on MP Wardak and explosion that targeted the HR head of the parliament.

Kirkuk Arabs want their numbers increased in the Sunni militia
[RUDAW.NET] Sunni Arabs in Kirkuk have asked Baghdad to double the number of Sunni militia in the Hashd al-Watani for the Hawija assault.

The Sunni Arabs are divided into two groups. One group want the Peshmerga to participate in the Hawija offensive. The other group oppose Peshmerga participation.

"Neither our Shiite brothers nor our Kurdish brothers allowed us to take up arms and protect our regions," Saadon Afandi, Head of the Iraqi Arab Republicans Bloc told Rudaw. "We need more fighters as well as Peshmerga support for Hawija offensive and its security, because it was just Peshmerga that protected Kirkuk."

Hawija Hashd al-Watanni has some 750 members.Baghdad has pledged to recruit 500 more militiamen. Sunni Arabs who want go to Hawija alongside the Iraqi army want more fighters.

"We will have a meeting with Haider al-Abadi in next two or three days to decide the final number of fighters of the Hawija Hashd al-Watani," said Iraqi MP Khaled Mufraji.

"We want just Iraqi army and Hashd to participate in the offensive," Mufraji added. "This force [Hashd al-Watani] benefits the Iraqi Central Government."

Kirkuk Provincial Council suspects the force and believes there might be other plans behind it.

"We have seen Shiite and Sunni militias before. They are not legal military forces, so we don’t want them in this region,"Muhammad Kamal, Member of Kirkuk Security Committee told Rudaw.

"Peshmerga protects Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
and police and security forces protect inside the city," Kamad said.

The Kurdish Peshmerga see the Hawija offensive as a significant operation to keep ISIS threats away from Kirkuk .

“The onslaught against the Boko Haram terrorists continues till they are all smoked out of their hiding places. This is a task that would be achieved with the continued support of all”.

(IraqiNews.com) Anbar – Commander of Anbar Operations, Maj. Gen. Ismail Mahlawi revealed on Sunday that it successfully pushed back an ISIS attack in Khalidiya Island, east of Ramadi.

Mahlawi in a press statement, said, “A suicide bomber driving a booby trapped vehicle tried to target al-Hashed al-Shaabi forces in Khalidiya Island, 23 km east of Ramadi.”

Mahlawi added, “The vehicle was bombed before reaching the target, causing no damage or injuries in the ranks of al-Hashed al-Shaabi forces.”

The commander of Anbar Operations Maj. Gen. Ismail Mahlawi, on Saturday further announced about the launch operation to liberate Khalidiya Island from ISIS control.

2 die in suicide bomb attack

(IraqiNews.com) ANBAR – A source in the border guard command in Anbar province announced on Sunday that two border police were killed and five others wounded in a suicide bombing attack that was targeted on their headquarters west of the province.

Speaking to Iraqi News the source said, “A booby trapped vehicle, driven by a suicide bomber, targeted the headquarters of the Second Battalion of the border guard command in Anbar, west of Ramadi.”

The source, seeking anonymity, added, “The bombing killed two officials of the Border Police and wounded five others. The headquarters was also damaged in the bombing.”

It is worth mentioning here that the border guard forces in Anbar province are exposed to such kinds of attacks quite often and the forces have suffered a number of casualties owing to these.

Iraqi forces liberate area of Khalidiya

Soddy Forces intercept border infiltration
The Command of the Arab Coalition Forces to Support the Legitimacy in Yemen have said that Saudi armed forces stationed at the Saudi-Yemeni border intercepted an infiltration attempt by Houthi militias and forces loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh on Saturday morning.

According to a statement released by the Command, the sporadic infiltration and penetration attempts by the rebel forces was "in flagrant violation of the agreed truce between the two sides," and as a result, "the aggressors have sustained human and military equipment losses following their infiltration attempts in

Al-Raboo'a region in Najran sector," the Saudi Press Agency, SPA, reported.

The statement added that coalition planes yesterday raided Houthi gatherings at the border, killing many and destroying military vehicles.

Meanwhile, one officer and six servicemen from the Saudi Armed forces were killed, the statement announced.

The statement also said that Saudi air and land forces continue to chase infiltrators in order to keep the border region free from any remnants, reported SPA.

Tunisia government dissolved by parliament
Follow-up. Yup, they done it...
Tunisia’s parliament passed a vote of no confidence in prime minister Habib Essid on Saturday, effectively disbanding the government of the US-trained agricultural economist. The no-confidence motion was passed by 118 votes, easily crossing the country’s 109-vote threshold after a debate that stretched late into the night. Out of the 191 MPs present for the vote, only three supported Essid and others abstained.

Although the result was expected as Essid had faced criticism from across Tunisia’s political spectrum, the vote was a mark of the instability which has bedevilled the north African country since it kicked off a wave of pro-democracy rebellions across the Arab world in 2011.

Parliament president Mohamed Ennaceur told MPs Tunisia was “living through a difficult situation that demands sacrifices from all” and added that “we must now look to the future to return hope to all Tunisians”.

Unlike fellow Arab countries such as Egypt, Yemen, Syria and Libya whose revolts have degenerated into coups or anarchic civil conflicts, Tunisia has maintained its parliamentary democracy in the face of jihadi attacks, inflation and stubbornly high unemployment rates.

But the difficulties have steadily sapped the authority of Essid, whose position has also been undermined by political maneuvering within Tunisia’s secular Nida Tounis party and pressure from the country’s president, Beji Caid Essebsi, who called for a new national unity government last month.

Essid said he would do his best to make sure the transition to the new government was a tranquil one. Despite fierce criticism of his government during an extraordinary parliamentary session, he said the debate “consecrated Tunisia’s nascent democracy”.

“Despite the serious problems our country faces, we have no fear for Tunisia which has the resources to face up to the challenges,” he said, before being given a standing ovation by those who had ousted him.

Constitutional law expert Nawfel Saied said the no confidence vote, although unprecedented in the country’s short history with democracy, was a positive point. Similar mechanisms exist in other parliamentary democracies, he said. He suggested the move could result in a more prominent role for the more religiously oriented Ennahda party, which currently has the largest number of seats in parliament following defections and splits within Nida Tounis.

Essebsi now has a month to pick a new prime minister, who in turn has a month to appoint a cabinet which has to be presented to parliament.

Over 30% Of Districts Under Serious Threat
The Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) on Sunday raised concerns that over 30 percent of all districts in the country are under serious threat by insurgent groups.

The IDLG said that of the 384 districts in the country - including 15 newly created and non-permanent districts – 116 are under threat.

They said at least 10 of these districts are out of government's control.

According to the IDLG, the districts under Taliban control are as follows: Disho, Baghran, Musa Qala and Nawzad in Helmand as well as Khak Afghan district in Zabul, Neka in Paktika, Nawa in Ghazni, Warduj and Yamgan in Badakhshan and Kohistanat district in Sar-e-Pul.

"We do not have the record of services in 10 districts... I can say that governance is not practiced in these districts," said IDLG spokesman Munira Yusufzada.

In addition to the 116 districts facing serious threats, 91 other districts are facing "medium" security threats.

Meanwhile, of Kunduz's nine districts, six, Dasht-e-Archi, Qala-e-Zal, Chahardara, Gortepa, Aqtash and Kulbad districts, are reportedly largely controlled by the Taliban.

"Nearly 98 percent of six of the nine districts in Kunduz are under control of the Taliban – including their government offices," said Nazari Turkman, an MP from Kunduz.

"Lack of plans by government gives a big hand to the Taliban and other insurgent groups [to destabilize the country]," said university lecturer Baz Mohammad Anwari.

Government is however taking action on a number of fronts and according to reports, ground forces in a number of areas are now being backed by air support from both the Afghan Air Force and foreign troops.

"They [militants] have suffered casualties in Khanashin district in Helmand and they have also suffered heavy losses in Qoshtepa district in Jawzjan," said defense ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri.

But despite the IDLG's claims that 10 districts are controlled by the Taliban, recent findings by the Long War Journal reveal that 20 districts are in fact under the Taliban's control and that in 35 other districts, only the centers are controlled by government while other parts are under the control of the Taliban.

North Korean leader Fat Boy Kim Jong-un has squandered the equivalent of W110 billion in South Korean money on test-firing 31 ballistic missiles over the five years since he took power (US$1=W1,136).

They were 16 Scud missiles with a range of 300-1,000 km, six Rodong with a range of 1,300 km, six Hwasong-10 with a range of 3,500 km, and three submarine-launched missiles, the Defense Ministry here said Wednesday. That is nearly double the 16 ballistic missiles his father Kim Jong-il fired in his entire 18 years at the helm.

Scud and Rodong missiles cost W1-2 billion each if measured by their export prices for Middle Eastern countries. The regime has fired a total of 22 such missiles, meaning their total cost is W22-44 billion.

Each Hwasong-10, formerly known as Musudan, is estimated at W3-6 billion, three times as much as the Scud missile, which means the regime has wasted W18-36 billion firing six.

The SLBMs the regime is developing cost an estimated W5-10 billion each.

With that money the regime could have purchased enough grain to feed the entire population for a month or two.
But that's not what is important to His Enormity...
The regime has about 1,000 mid- and short-range ballistic missiles, military authorities here speculate.

"Listen Putin, we will come to Russia and will kill you at your homes ... Oh Brothers, carry out jihad and kill and fight them," a masked man driving a car in the desert yelled while wagging his finger in the last couple of minutes of the video.

The video with subtitles showed footage of gunnies attacking armored vehicles and tents and collecting arms in the desert. "Breaking into a barrack of the Rejectionist military on the international road south Akashat," read one subtitle.

It was not immediately possible to independently verify the video but the link to the footage was published on a Telegram messaging account used by the myrmidon group.

It was not immediately clear why Russia would be a target, but Russia and the U.S. are talking about boosting military and intelligence cooperation against Islamic State and al Qaeda in Syria.

Islamic State has called on its supporters to take action with any available weapons targeting countries it has been fighting.

Salafists blow up 16-century mosque in Yemen
[AlArabiya] Salafists in Yemen have blown up a 16th century mosque housing the shrine of a revered Sufi scholar in the city of Taiz, a local official said Sunday.

Gunmen led by a Salafist local chief known as Abu al-Abbas blew up the mosque of Sheikh Abdulhadi al-Sudi on Friday night, the official told AFP, confirming media reports of the attack.

Yemen’s commission for antiquities and museums condemned the destruction of the site that is considered the most famous in Taiz.

It said the mosque’s white dome was “one of the biggest domes in Yemen and one of the most beautiful religious sites in old Taiz.”

Images of the site before destruction showed a white square-shaped, single-storey structure topped by a large central dome circled by smaller ones.

Overhydration may have caused death in Army Ranger training
[StarsandStripes] The condition that may have caused the death this week of a U.S. Army Ranger candidate has dogged the military branch for decades as it has grappled with heat-related illnesses and proper hydration for trainees.

No cause of death has been determined for 21-year-old 2nd Lt. Michael Parros, 21, of Walnut Creek, California. He was hospitalized for hyponatremia Monday, his first day of the elite training in the sweltering heat at Fort Benning, Georgia, and died Wednesday. The condition can be caused by drinking too much water, which causes the body's level of sodium to become abnormally low.
Volume depletion + excessive salt loss + replenishing with water without salt = hyponatremia.
I guess they don't hand out salt pills anymore, since salt's bad for you.
The number of such cases in the military spiked after guidelines calling for increased fluid intake were issued more than two decades ago to combat heat illnesses during grueling training. Studies on the causes of the condition led to changes in policies to reduce heat-related illnesses and limit fluid intake; just a week before Parros fell ill, the Army issued a major update of its policy to prevent heat-related deaths that addresses the diagnosis and treatment of hyponatremia and more clearly defines guidelines for fluid consumption based on activity level, temperature and other factors.

Heat injury is independent of hydration levels and nobody dies of transient dehydration during exertion--you will slow your pace to a crawl, and then a halt, long before any serious harm occurs. Electrolyte drinks are actually DILUTVE of serum sodium concentration. (They'd have to be at unpalatably high levels to not be--think sea water.)

Former governor predicts Mosul offensive in September
[RUDAW.NET] Former Nineveh governor Atheel al-Nujaifi says the looming operation to recapture the ISIS-held city will most likely start in mid-September and could continue well into November before faceless myrmidons are fully driven out of djinn-infested Mosul

Speaking to Rudaw TV on Saturday, Nujaifi said the entire province will be recaptured before the end of this year.

"My prediction is based on the preparation of the armed forces led by the international coalition," Nujaifi said. "I predict that the city will be fully liberated this fall," he added.

The former governor who has been put in charge of the Sunni militia known as the Hashd al-Watani with some 10.000 recruits said Mosul had been besieged by both the Iraqi and Peshmerga forces. To avoid "the total destruction of the city," Nujaifi urged the residents of Mosul to "cooperate with liberating forces."

"We are ill-prepared to receive the new flow of refugees, that is why I urge the residents of Mosul not to leave their homes when the city is being liberated and instead take part in the operation," he said without giving further detail about the offensive.

Hashd al-Watani was initially established to recruit Sunni fighters who were willing to take part in a possible assault on ISIS in the Sunni heartland of Mosul. Until recently, the group was funded by Iraq’s predominantly Shiite government in a bid to avert sectarian tensions in a region with mostly underprivileged Sunni populations who have often had hostile attitudes towards government policies in Baghdad.

Baghdad, however, removed Mosul’s then exiled governor Nujaifi, a Sunni, accusing him of mismanaging the Sunni militia and turning it into his own army.

Iraqi government also froze payments to the group in August 2015. Sunni military representatives told Rudaw in December last year that Ankara had been paying the salaries of the troops since.

[EXPRESS.CO.UK] The Charity Commission has released reports on two separate organizations that claimed to be raising cash to help victims of the war in Syria, and Kurdish Moslems in Birmingham, but were in fact funding and promoting terrorists.

In one case, charities set up by Adeel Ul-Haq, 21, of Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, raised money through social media that was used to buy a high-powered laser pointer, night-vision goggles and a secret waterproof money pouch.

Seven Pakistani extremists killed in police shootout
[AlArabiya] Seven Islamist extremists were killed in a shootout in Pakistan's wealthy Punjab province as police raided the group suspected of launching attacks on security posts, officials said Sunday.

Gunfire erupted between police and 10 suspected militants early Sunday morning in a house where the group was holed up.

Police said the seven dead were killed by bullets from their own men.

“When the firing stopped, seven terrorists were found dead by the firing of their own accomplices and the remaining escaped in the darkness of the night,” a police statement said.

The shootout occurred in Pakistan's central Punjab province about 56 kilometers (35 miles) west of Lahore.

Police said the Islamists belonged to the Pakistani branch of the Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the banned sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).

They were accused of planning attacks on security posts and law enforcement agencies in Punjab.

Rights activists have blamed Pakistani police for staging raids to kill suspects they fear could be freed if tried in a court.

Pakistan launched a countrywide campaign against militancy called the National Action Plan in 2015 after a deadly Taliban attack on a Peshawar school killed more than 150 people, mostly children.

The Sunni LeJ group has claimed responsibility for some of the most brazen attacks on Shiites in Pakistan's recent history, including a January 2013 bombing in Quetta that killed over one hundred members of the Shiite Hazara minority group.

Sectarian violence – in particular that carried out by Sunni militants against Shiites, who make up roughly 20 percent of Pakistan's population of 200 million – has claimed thousands of lives in the country over the past decade.

Abu Dujana is believed to be one of the key figures in the Pulwama region in South Kashmire.

It is believed that Dujana joined the Lashkar-e-Tayiba when he was 17 and swiftly rose up the ranks after his detailed planning and execution impressed those above him

As soon as Dujana was recognised at the rally he was whisked away by his supporters and was soon lost in crowd.

The rally, which saw thousands of supporters joining in to pay their respect to the ’deaders’, took place despite a curfew in the town.

Curfew remains in force in some areas - Anantnag, Pulwama, parts of Baramulla town and Shopian - as restrictions on four or more people gathering continue in the whole of Kashmire.

More than 120 migrant bodies washed up in Libya
[AlArabiya] More than 120 bodies of migrants who died trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe have washed up around Sabratha in western Libya this month, the city's mayor said on Sunday.

Hussein Thwadi said bodies had washed up on a daily basis, with 53 found on a single day last week.

Libya is a common departure point for migrants seeking to travel to Europe by boat, many of them fleeing violence, repression or poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.

Political turmoil and armed conflict in Libya have given smugglers the space to work with impunity, running trafficking networks that bring migrants across the Sahara desert to the coast.

Of more than 3,000 migrants known to have died trying to cross the Mediterranean this year, about three out of four perished trying to reach Italy from North Africa, mainly Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Nearly 90,000 migrants had crossed the central Mediterranean to Italy as of this week, the IOM said, a 14 percent increase on the previous year.

As the number of attempted crossings from Libya picked up in the spring with the arrival of calmer weather, many of the boats have been leaving from the coastline near Sabratha.

“The whole coast of Sabratha is open,” Thwadi told Reuters by phone. “There are patrols but they do not have enough capacity to tackle this crisis.”

“Illegal migration existed before, but with insecurity and the lack of state authorities the crisis has become worse and worse.”

Thwadi said most of the migrants whose bodies washed up this month were from sub-Saharan African states, though there were also 23 Tunisians. Red Crescent volunteers and local officials have been removing them for burial in a cemetery for unidentified bodies in Sabratha, he said.

A UN-backed government that has been trying to establish itself in Tripoli since March says tackling migration is among its priorities.

But the government is struggling to manage complex security and economic challenges, and still faces political opposition on the ground.

Thwadi said he had raised the issue with the new government's leadership but had not yet received any concrete response.

Taliban militants gang rape woman in Helmand

A group of the Taliban militants have reportedly gang raped a woman in southern Helmand province of Afghanistan, a local security official has claimed.

The official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the incident took place four days ago in Balo Jan village in Nahr-e-Saraj district.

The official further added that four Taliban insurgents were involved in the incident who were fighting under the command of commander Omari.

According to the official, the Taliban insurgents forced into a residential house in the village and attacked the woman and raped her in front of the children, including a 14-year-old boy.

The individuals involved in the incident have been arrested by commander Omari, the official said, adding that commander Omari has warned the woman to keep the issue as a secret without informing anyone.

The Taliban militants have not commented regarding the report so far.

This is the not the first the group has been accused of sexual violence against the ordinary civilians of the country.

Earlier the group was accused of raping some women in a hostel in northern Kunduz city which was briefly captured by the group last year.

Soddy Warplanes Strike Houthi Fighters near Saudi Border
Saudi-led coalition warplanes bombed on Saturday Houthi fighters from Yemen seeking to infiltrate Saudi Arabia, killing tens of Houthi militiamen, security sources said.

The bombing took place on the Yemeni side of the border close to the Saudi city of Najran, they said. Clashes were also seen in the northwestern Yemeni town of Haradh which borders the kingdom, Reuters reported according to witnesses.

The escalation in violence was one of the worst since peace talks began in Kuwait in April between Yemen’s government and the Houthis to end a 16-month conflict that has left more than 6,400 people dead, nearly half of them civilians, and displaced more than 2.5 million.

A truce that began in April has slowed the momentum of fighting, but violence continues almost daily.

Prospects for progress in the talks dimmed further this week when Houthi rebels and their allies in the political party of former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, announced they had decided to form a political council to unilaterally rule the country.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the United Nations Yemen envoy, said the move gravely violated U.N. Security Council Resolution 2216, which calls on the Houthis “to refrain from further unilateral actions that could undermine the political transition in Yemen”.

Brennan went on to add that "there’s been so much blood spilled, I don’t know if we’re going to be able to get back to [a unified Syria] in my life time."

Father Swaps 6-Year-Old Daughter For A Goat
Ghor police have arrested a Herat man after he allegedly married off his six-year-old daughter in exchange for a goat and other supplies.

The child was swapped as a bride for the items.

The father admitted to police that he had swapped his daughter, who was then married off to a 60-year-old Ghor man.

Acting head of the Ghor police investigation department, Mohammad Azim, said their investigations reveal that the girl was indeed 'sold' by her father to the 60-year-old man.

"We have prepared the dossier and it is ready to be sent to the attorney general's office," he said.

Earlier this week, the 60-year-old Ghor man who married the 6-year-old was arrested by police.

The girl's father, who is from Herat, then reportedly travelled to Ghor to secure the release of the Ghor man. However, on arrival at the police station he came under attack by local women.

In an admission, on camera, at the police station, the father said: "I gave my daughter to him. (In return) he gave me a goat, a baby goat (kid), a bag of flour and a bottle of ghee."

The 60-year-old also admitted on camera to having married the child. He said: "I married her. I gave her father a goat, a baby goat (kid), a bag of flour, a bottle of ghee, tea and sugar."

Meanwhile, Ghor civil society activists said they are fed up with the number of cases against women and children and said that if the perpetrators are not found and punished, they will stand up against the relevant government organizations in the province.

"Women are burnt, they commit suicide, they are stoned to death and shot dead. We will not tolerate these acts anymore. We will stand up against the negligence of local government if perpetrators are not punished," said Latifa Madadi, a woman activist in Ghor.

The prosecutor who deals with cases involving violence against women, Negina Ghori, said the case will be investigated thoroughly.

"..., father of the girl and ..., the man that married her, are under investigation and will be sent to jail in the near future," she added.

The six-year-old girl was married off to the man earlier this month. It is believed that civil society activists alerted the authorities to the case.

A Big Harry Deal : Utah prosecutor Troy Rawlings investigates U.S. Senator Harry Reid
[CityWeekly] In charging documents filed in 2014 by Davis County and the Salt Lake County district attorneys, prosecutors laid out a series of email exchanges between Johnson, Swallow and the late Provo payday-loan magnate Richard Rawle. The charging documents allege that Swallow was helping Johnson send funds through Rawle to a contact close to Reid in hopes of securing a meeting with the senator. Johnson claimed he needed Reid’s help to make a Federal Trade Commission case against him disappear. According to court documents, Johnson sent Rawle $250,000, some of which allegedly went to Swallow.

Reid’s Washington, D.C., press office did not respond to two requests by City Weekly for comment on the investigation, but the senator's spokesperson has previously denied any allegations connecting the senator to Johnson and the Utah Attorney General’s Office.

Senator Reid's political position would provide some protection when it comes to a civil prosecution, but not a criminal one. 'Just because Reid is in the Senate doesn’t give him any immunity,' the legal source says. 'If you violate Utah's criminal law, too bad. The fact that you’re a U.S. Senator doesn’t shield you from that.'"

Kim Jong-il's Widow Sent to Prison Camp
Former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's fourth wife Kim Ok was purged and sent to a prison camp less than a year after her stepson Suet Face Kim Jong-un took power, Radio Free Asia reported Tuesday. A Chinese businessman who visited Pyongyang recently told the radio station he heard from a senior Workers Party official that Kim Ok (52) had been sent off to a camp for political prisoners with her parents and siblings.

The last straw was apparently the arrogant attitude of her younger brother Kim Kyun.

"Kim Kyun acted high-handedly and tyrannically as his sister was Kim Jong-il's favorite after Fat Boy Kim Jong-un's mother Ko Yong-hui died in 2004," RFA said.

Kim Kyun was appointed first vice president of Kim Il-sung University in February 2011 but abruptly resigned from his post in October 2013.

Quoting another source, RFA said Kim Ok was always bound to be purged after Pudgy Kim Jong-un took power, given that Kim Jong-il also disappeared his father Kim Il-sung's second wife when the nation founder died in 1994.

His Corpulenceness Kim Jong-un had no reason to protect Kim Ok, who he may have felt took his mother’s place, a source said.

Kim Ok studied piano at Pyongyang University of Music and Dance and became a secretary to Kim Jong-il in 1980. She was seen on several occasions with the creepy Kim Jong-un until October 2012 but then disappeared from the radar.

Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek fears Turkey is entering a period where top officials could be at risk of assassination. Gökçek, mayor for over 22 years and one of the senior figures in the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), also told AFP in an interview the United States must extradite U.S.-based Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen to Turkey to remove any suspicion that Washington was involved in the failed July 15 coup attempt.

Gökçek said Gülen’s role in Turkey went back to the premierships of Bülent Ecevit in the 1970s and admitted the AKP had mistakenly formed an alliance with his similarly Islamic-leaning supporters when it first came to power in 2002.

“But their biggest aim was to use us and to get their own people inside the army,” he said.

Gökçek, one of the most outspoken senior figures in the AKP who regularly updates 3.4 million followers on Twitter with his views, said there would no longer be a risk of coups in Turkey but rather of assassinations.

“Politicians will be at risk of assassinations... of course I have increased my security,” he said.
One or two minor pols might be "assassinated" despite better security. There would of course be an "unfortunate" crackdown in response. It's right out of the thugs playbook...
The mayor was quick to take to Twitter on the night of the coup attempt, describing it as a Gülen-backed coup minutes after the first reports emerged and then calling all supporters out into the streets.

He claims to have been number six on a hit list - topped by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan - to be killed by Gülen followers after the power grab.

Turkey blames Gülen, who resides in Pennsylvania, for masterminding the coup attempt, saying he assiduously built up a “parallel state” with followers in all institutions.

With some officials now even alleging that Washington could have had a hand in the putsch, Ankara wants the United States to send back Gülen to face trial in the country he left in 1999.

“For America to prove it is not behind the coup, there is only one thing to do, deliver (him) to Turkey,” Gökçek told AFP.

He claimed that the U.S. had already given “signals” it was involved in the coup after a top American general expressed concern that many of Washington’s former Turkish military interlocutors were now in jail.

“How will it be known whether America is or is not involved in this business? If they deliver [Gülen] there is no problem. But if they don’t the United States will not escape from the dock.”

Gökçek, who had previously suggested Gülen was hypnotizing people and used genies to control them, expressed bewilderment that Washington had tolerated the cleric’s presence and allowed his foundations to open up schools in the U.S.

“For America to tolerate this, it seems there are connections to FETÖ,” he said, referring to what is called the Fethullah Terror Organization.

Gökçek also said he was “absolutely in favor” of the death penalty for the coup plotters and brushed off warnings from the European Union that reinstating capital punishment could end Turkey’s decades-long bid to join the bloc.

If Turkey is told it can’t enter the EU, “well I swear to God, we don’t care. Let us not enter,” said Gökçek, adding that he had been a champion of EU integration in the past. “When we were close, you were far away. Europe is not the only place in the world... We will find others.”

He said if parliament passed a law reversing the 2004 death penalty abolition, it should then be put to a referendum.

“The world can then see if the people want it or not.”

Nine get death threats
[Dhaka Tribune] An anonymous letter sent by post to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday contains death threats to nine prominent personalities including a Supreme Court Justice.

The letter was postmarked Mohammadpur Sub-Post Office, but did not show when it was sent.

The letter, written in Bangla, does not contain the name of any organization or a sender. On top of the letter are the proclamations "Naraye Takbir" and "Allahu Akbar."

The letter also reads: "Your death sentence is final. Execution will be carried out any time."

Then a list of nine prominent personalities are listed: International Crimes Tribunal judge Justice Nizamul Haque, tribunal prosecutors Dr Tureen Afroz and Advocate Rana Dasgupta, pro-war crimes trial activists Dr Imran Sarker and Kamal Pasha Chowdhury, Azadur Rahman Chandan, Shagor Lohani, Islami Oikya Jote

Police were notified of the letter. Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said law enforcement agencies were taking necessary steps in this matter.

When contacted, Maulana Masuud, who initiated the recent fatwa against terrorism, said he did not receive any such letter with a threat.

But he offered prayers for those who had sent the letter, saying: "May Allah guide them."

Advocate Rana Dasgupta, the secretary general of the Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council of Bangladesh, said he did not receive any new death threat, but "such death threats have been sent many times before in my name. I previously filed general diary, but did not see any initiative from police."

Turkey in shock over journalists’ arrest
Turkish media are in a state of shock this weekend after the government arrested 17 journalists in recent days on terror charges and issued arrest warrants for dozens more, in what a press freedom group has warned is a “sweeping purge” of the sector.

Turkey had already ordered the closure of more than 100 papers, broadcasters and publishing houses as part of a crackdown after the failed 15 July coup attempt, before sending police to round up reporters, columnists, a novelist and social commentators.

The impact of those arrests was documented by US-based journalist and government critic Mahir Zeynalov, who was expelled from Turkey for his work two years ago and who took to Twitter to commemorate the work and reputations of the journalists arrested.

“Everybody was highlighting numbers and statistics, but nobody really explained who these people are,” he told the Observer. Some are personal friends, others celebrated within the profession and several are nationally famous.

So he posted photos of each journalist, many at the moment of their arrest, each with a brief but powerful biography. The pen sketches are affectionate, sometimes teasing, but most end with a one-word reminder of the price they have paid for their work. “Arrested.”

“Nuriye Akman. Give her a cup of coffee and she would ask the most amazing questions. Interview nerd. Arrested,” reads one, a heartfelt appeal not just to those who care about journalists but to anyone who struggles to get started in the morning without their caffeine.

Others include a “rare Islamist sociologist”, a journalist who made his name investigating the country’s first coup, a satirist who went to jail “with head held high” and a journalist tortured in government jails in the 1980s.

Taken together, they are a powerful indictment of an attack on an entire profession. Initially 21 were detained but four have been released.

The oldest who has now been charged with “membership of a terror group”, according to Anadolu news agency, is a 72-year-old veteran critic of the government, publisher and former parliamentarian, Nazli Ilicak.

“These journalists were diverse – young, old, conservative, left-wing, novelist, economist, military geek. This represented the wide variety of journalists being put in jail and proved that the broad spectrum of Turkish society is being silenced,” Zeynalov said.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has warned of a “sweeping purge” of the media in Turkey.

“Instead of channelling the overwhelming support it has received from across the political spectrum to unite the nation, the government is exploiting a failed coup to silence the critical press when Turkey most needs pluralistic media,” said Nina Ognianova, regional co-ordinator for the group.

One of those who was freed, commentator Bulent Mumay, warned that the government was repeating past mistakes. Turkey has a chequered history on press freedom and was the world’s top jailer of journalists in 2012 and 2013. But the president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has shrugged off international criticism of his post-coup crackdown, which has included a purge of the military, civil service, judiciary and education sector, the arrest of more than 18,000 people, telling the west to “mind its own business”.

Zeynalov – who is from Azerbaijan, lived and worked in Turkey for many years and has a Turkish wife – has long been a thorn in the side of Turkish authorities and two years ago they expelled him for “posting tweets against high-level state officials”.

Massive truck bombing rocks Kabul city
A massive explosion rocked Kabul city in the early hours of Monday morning with preliminary reports suggesting a Vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) was detonated.

The incident took place around around 1:30 am local time targeting a compound frequented by the foreigners.

It is believed the compound is North Gate which provides accommodation to the foreign military and civilian organization in the country.

There are also reports at least four militants launched gun attack following the massive blast that resulted into power outage in the city.

The Taliban group claimed responsibility behind the attack and said a coordinated attack has been launched on a guesthouse of the foreigners in the city.

There are no reports regarding the casualties as a result of the incident.

Hofer leads Austrian presidential race poll
Freedom Party candidate Norbert Hofer has widened his lead in a Gallup poll ahead of October’s repeat election for the Austrian presidency. Hofer lost by a whisker in May to former Greens party leader Alexander van der Bellen in an election that Austria’s constitutional court this month ordered re-run given vote count irregularities.

A series of Islamist attacks in Europe and Britain’s decision to leave the EU since the original vote have shuffled the political deck in neutral Austria.

The poll published by the Österreich paper yesterday showed the midpoint of the wide range of support for Hofer at 52 percent -- one point higher than a poll in early July found -- versus 48 percent for van der Bellen.

Fifty-seven percent of the 600 respondents cited Hofer’s personality as the most important factor, followed by “protection from terror” at 56 percent and “more stringent asylum policy” at 55 percent, the paper said.

The poll also showed the anti-Islam and euroskeptic Freedom Party (FPO) with record-high 35 percent support, far ahead of the governing coalition partners: the Social Democrats at 25 percent and conservative People’s Party at 19 percent. FPO leader Heinz Christian Strache has repeatedly accused d the government of taking too soft a line on Europe’s migrant crisis, which the FPO says has exposed Austria to danger.

Hofer, 45, lost out in May by just 31,000 votes to pro-Europe candidate van der Bellen, 72. But Austria’s highest court annulled the vote, finding that sloppiness in the count, while not intended to manipulate any votes, had potentially been serious enough to change the outcome.

If successful, he would be the first far-right head of state in a European Union country.

A Distant Elite: How Meritocracy Went Wrong
[HedgehogReview] We need to find ways to restore and preserve a less regimented, less class- and status-stratified, less school-sorted, more open-ended America, one more respectful of men and women of all stations and educational levels. We need an economy and legal structures that are as open as possible to enterprise and innovation. We need an educational system that is open to all, and geared not to the manufacturing of credentials (or artificial and dysfunctional rites of passage) but to the empowering of individuals. We need a society that concerns itself with the knowledge and skills a person can acquire, not where or how they were acquired. Why could we not restore the practice of bringing talented and ambitious young people into professions such as the law through apprenticeships, as was done in the era of the founders, instead of insisting that they expend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a law school credential that means less and less with each passing year, and only serves to delay their entrance into the work force and the productive life of the community? Why could we not do the same with engineers, accountants, teachers, health-care professionals, and the like? Would not such changes move us back in the direction of a restoration of essential merit?

So that these statements not take on an air of wistful abstraction, let me conclude with a flesh-and-blood example from the American past. Consider Abraham Lincoln, a common man born in a log cabin to humble circumstances, whose character and outlook were molded not by the advantages of birth or pedigree but by his own relentless striving toward self-betterment, and his labor to wring a better life out the hard opportunities presented to him. We see, and rightly so, a considerable portion of our national ethos bound up in his story. We see an image of meritocracy rightly understood.

Lincoln was not particularly proud of his humble origins, and did not like to go into detail about them. His early life, he once said, could be summarized in a single phrase: “the short and simple annals of the poor.”11 Hence, our knowledge of his early life is scrappy. We know that he moved from Kentucky to Indiana to Illinois, a typical pioneer farm boy, burdened with the tasks of hauling water, chopping wood, plowing, harvesting. We know that he hated farm work so much that he would seize the opportunity to do almost anything else. We know that he had little educational opportunity yet was a voracious reader, with a great love of language and oratory.

When young Lincoln arrived in New Salem, Illinois, as, by his own description, “a piece of floating driftwood,” he was an uncredentialed nobody.12 But he soon found employment as a clerk, insinuated himself into the life of the community, became well known and well regarded by all, was appointed postmaster, ran for and on the second try was elected to the Illinois General Assembly, borrowed money to buy a suit, then found himself thinking about a career in the law. And from then on, there was no holding him back.

You could say that this was a rather unpromisingly hand-to-mouth pattern of development. Or you could say that Lincoln benefited from the looseness and easygoing disorder of frontier society, with its fluidity and absence of confining rules and regulations, its steady succession of fresh challenges demanding a fresh response. He did not live in a world where all of life hinged on his parents getting him into the “right” kindergarten so that he would have a plausible path into the ruling class. He could come to a town like New Salem and, in a matter of weeks, persuade his neighbors that he was a plausible candidate for office. He did not have to be defined as his father’s son. He could begin over again, and again.

Not everything about this frontier world was good, and Lincoln especially regretted the absence of educational opportunities in his own life. But one cannot separate the resourcefulness of his character from the fact of his frontier origins. Nor can one separate those humble origins from his iconic and enduring meaning in American life. There was nothing ordinary about Lincoln. But his ascension to the presidency was a clear example of the common man’s potential in a land open to men of merit. As Lincoln said in announcing his candidacy for the General Assembly in 1832, he “was born, and [had] ever remained, in the most humble walks of life,” without “wealthy or popular relatives or friends to recommend me.”13 But he had been given unprecedented opportunity to realize his potential by the right set of conditions.

We would do well to leave room for the Lincolns among us—especially if they are as raw and uncredentialed as the man who would become our sixteenth president was. Think of his great speech at the dedication of the cemetery in Gettysburg in November 1863. As many know, there were two notable speeches that day. The first, and the longest and most learned and most florid, was given by the supremely well-pedigreed Edward Everett, former president of Harvard—and the first American to receive a German PhD. But it was the self-educated frontiersman president who gave the speech whose accents ring down through the ages. Perhaps there is a pattern here to learn from.

#1  A class and status society is preferred by exactly the sort of amoral, postmodern, post-Christian women that populate much of America and the decaying West.

They will fight to prevent the reversal. The kind of up-by the bootstrap society that allowed regular guys to prosper and have access to women and a happy family life is not what pampered women who each think of themselves as a goddess deserving of only the very best man want for a social system.

A society with Judeo-Christian social norms and which values lifelong monogamy promotes regular guys having access to women for companionship, sex, and procreation. But to a woman who operates on basic primate mating strategy, this is the worst possible world. It means that it is very difficult to choose between alpha and lesser males. It means she must settle for someone who doesn't have the most alpha of alpha genes. In a highly classist society, even the lowest serving maid has a chance for 15 minutes with the lord of the manor and his genes, and the lord is easily identified.

DNA analysis of some of the first city building agricultural societies indicates that only about one in fifteen or so men ever got to pass on their genes. Monopolization of the women by a well identified ruling class is the reason. Undoubtedly some women protested. Also undoubtedly, many if not most loved this arrangement. To the sort of amoral, self-absorbed woman who can't rise above our baboon-troop ancestors, the arrangement was awesome. Alpha genes to mix with her own for offspring, the material means to raise those kids, and never having to deal with those horrible regular guys who would make great lifelong companions.

If this sounds cynical or overstated to you, perhaps you should open your eyes. The divorce industry is huge in no small way due to this dynamic.

The potential to face the need to give the "last full measure of devotion" that had always been part of the 'contract' was abolished by extending the power of the vote to those who would never face the requirement involuntarily. It stop being a right and became a privilege. You reap what you sow.

Turkey Restores Access to Key Airbase After Brief Ban
Follow-up on a story noted in the comments Sunday.
Turkish authorities restored access to and from a key air base used in operations against Islamic State militants, local media reported on Sunday, one day before the U.S. top military official is scheduled to visit the country.

Incirlik air base in southern Turkey reopened following a meeting with security officials. Police used armored cars to block the gates earlier Sunday following intelligence that raised suspicion another coup was being plotted following the failed July 15 putsch, Ihlas News Agency reported, without saying where it got the information. The ban lasted four hours, the agency said.

Turkey has suspended or removed more than 60,000 people from jobs in the military, security services, judiciary and media since the failed coup. James Clapper, director of U.S. national intelligence, said on Thursday that the purge has affected “many of our interlocutors.” General Joseph Votel, the head of U.S. Central Command, said Turkey’s “frictions” have already impacted some operations against Islamic State.

The remarks have further strained ties between NATO’s two largest armed forces. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blames the attempted coup on his U.S.-based political rival, Fethullah Gulen. While Erdogan has stopped short of directly accusing the Obama administration of fomenting the coup attempt, officials and news outlets are blaming the U.S. with increasing intensity.

U.S. officials have denied any role in the failed putsch. Marine General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, is set to visit Turkey on Monday, Erdogan said over the weekend.

Erdoğan supporters to hold rally in Germany
Tens of thousands of supporters of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, are to hold a rally in the German city of Cologne, as tensions over Turkey’s failed coup put authorities on edge.
He might be more popular than Merkel in Germany right now...
The political strife in Turkey has found expression in Germany, which is home to the biggest Turkish diaspora. Up to 30,000 people are expected to answer a call to take to the streets on Sunday, issued by pro-Erdoğan group the Union of European-Turkish Democrats, police said. The North Rhine-Westphalia state, where Cologne is located, is home to about one-third of Germany’s 3-million-strong Turkish community.

At the same time, several smaller counter-demonstrations are to take place, including one billed “Stop Erdoğan” and another called by far-right activists, raising fears the demonstrators could clash. Security services in Germany sought to head off any potential violence between the different camps, with about 2,700 officers – including several Turkish speakers – deployed to keep the peace.

Cologne’s police chief, Jürgen Mathies, said: “One thing I want to make clear is that we will intervene against any kind of violence quickly, decisively and forcefully.”

Erdoğan enjoys a large support base among the diaspora in Germany, home to about 1.5 million people with Turkish nationality who can vote in Turkish elections. His Justice and Development party (AKP) garnered 60% of the vote in Germany in last November’s election, a bigger share than in Turkey.
So the Turkish community in Germany is either 1.5 million or 3 million...

(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – A security source in Nineveh Province informed that three ISIS members were killed in an airstrike carried out by the international coalition aviation south of Mosul.

Sharing details the source said, “International coalition aviation today carried out an airstrike targeting an ISIS headquarters at Matya village, northwest of Qayyarah airbase. Three ISIS members were killed in the strike.”

“The airstrike also destroyed an ISIS mortar launcher,” added the source.

Ret. Gen. John Allen Says Donald Trump Could Cause 'Civil Military Crisis'
[ABC] Retired Marine Corps Gen. John Allen said that if Republican nominee Donald Trump becomes president and follows through on some of the things he's said on the campaign trail, the U.S. could face a "civil military crisis, the like of which we've not seen in this country."

"When we swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution, which is a document and a set of principles and it supports the rule of law, one of those is to ensure that we do not obey illegal orders," Allen told told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week."

In the past, Trump has supported the use of waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation techniques, and has said the military should kill the families of alleged terrorists.

"He's talked about needing to torture. He's talked about needing to murder the families of alleged terrorists," Allen said. "He's talked about carpet-bombing ISIL. Who do you think is going to carpet-bombed when all that occurs? It's going to be innocent families."

Were Trump to order such things, Allen said, he would be ordering illegal actions.

#3  I don't agree with the man, bur let's get it right (unlike the Left). In uniform and in service, Winfield Scott ran for the Presidency. In the 19th Century you had Washington, Harrison, Jackson et al taking turns on a pattern of military service to the office. In fact it was general Zachary Taylor who commanded the Northern theater in the Mexican American war who would become President. Scott would take Mexico City, but Taylor would win Washington.

The separation of the military leaders from politics is something that evolved in the 20th Century. Even then you better believe that Eisenhower had to be a politician while in uniform to deal with the egos of Churchill and de Gaulle.

Other than the Jill Kelly e-mails, not much. I think Allen's personal ambition caused him to actually pursue and suck up to them. He was a failure in Afghanistan and Iraq and the stinky brown on his perfumed prince nose is an embarrassment.
