Son of former D.C. mayor Marion Barry tango-uniform at 36
[CBS] WASHINGTON, D.C. - Marion "Christopher" Barry Jr., the son of the late Washington, D.C. mayor with the same name, has died at age 36, CBS affiliate WUSA reports.

The only son of the former D.C. mayor was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead early Saturday morning, WUSA reports.

No cause of death has been officially announced. WUSA's Bruce Johnson reports that like his father, the younger Barry struggled with addiction issues.

Science & Technology
Men's Strength in Severe Decline. Here's What Parents Need to Know.
[PJ] I’m already feeling the push when it comes to my son’s academic future. Perhaps it is because we’ve made the decision to enroll him in preschool starting at the age of two. Brochures are filled with details on curriculum styles. One place even promised to teach my son sign language. Of course, the bigger the promises, the greater the cost. Someone has to pay for that in-class set of iPads.

Eventually we settled on a simple, affordable, no-tech co-op that focuses on play-based learning. And while there is plenty written about the benefits of letting your toddler do his thing, one aspect play-based advocates fail to emphasize is that manual play doesn’t end when your child is finally old enough to begin a formal education.

My husband entered second grade fully aware of his fractions thanks to countless hours spent in the garage with his father. By the time I entered wood shop in 7th grade I’d already designed and built a scooter from scratch with my dad. Between the two of us we’d accumulated more practical mathematical knowledge in the garage than we’d ever get in high school. And all of it began with the fun of a toy hammer and a pretend workbench.

Apparently the benefits weren’t just intellectual in nature. As it turns out, there are some serious long-term physical benefits to working with tools as well:

In a series of studies testing grip and pinch strength, researchers report in the Journal of Hand Therapy that among the 237 healthy millennials studied between the ages of 20 and 34, men today are significantly weaker than their counterparts of the '80s. Specifically, men could squeeze with 120 pounds of force in 1985 and only 95 today, reports Today.com. The strength of women dropped off, too, but not as substantially.

The prime reason, the researchers propose, is that men are simply less handy--fewer work in manual labor jobs, hence the reduction in strength over these past three decades, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to the researchers, weaker hand strength has been linked to a variety of health conditions including heart disease, stroke and arthritis. Hence medical associations have been warning us for years that too much texting can literally "send us to an early grave." Creepy, huh? It's like we were meant to do more with our hands and minds than hit buttons all day.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Profiling works: How Israel stops the Palestinian "lone wolf" attacker
[LI] The so-called Knife or Stabbing Intifada has not been limited to knives or stabbing. There have been shootings, bombings and car-rammings. But one common denominator has been the "lone wolf" attacker -- including women and early teens as young as 13.

Lone wolf attacks were actively encouraged throughout anti-Israel social media, and the attackers were treated as heroes.

When the attacker is not part of an organized group, it's harder for intelligence services to prevent the attack from taking place. But after several dozen attacks and dozens of Israelis killed, the lone wolf attacks dwindled to a trickle. Certainly part of this was fatigue on the part of the Palestinian population, more aggressive policing and use of check points, and also monitoring of social media.

AFP reported in late July, Israeli experience shows challenge in stopping lone wolf attacks

Israeli authorities who have faced a wave of lone-wolf attacks by Palestinians say they have made progress in identifying potential assailants in advance, a challenge now also confronting Western nations.

Recent attacks in Europe and the United States have brought renewed attention to lone assailants and what can be done to stop them or reduce their impact.

While the challenge of halting such assaults can seem next to impossible, Israeli officials say an alert system incorporating social media monitoring, basic human intelligence and other means has helped prevent or limit bloodshed....

Israel’s military has developed an alert system that flags up those seen as potentially dangerous, the official said.

It is based on analyses of assailants since October, including their backgrounds, where they chose to act and their activities in the days before an attack.

With the list of names narrowed, Israeli authorities decide how to address the situation.

The response can include a range of strategies, such as monitoring, speaking to someone's parents or an arrest if the person is found to have broken the law by inciting violence, the official said.

Security measures were also tightened in areas seen as potential targets.

In a post at its blog, the IDF explains the process used, including the importance of profiling the habits, behaviors and locations of lone wolf attackers, How can we prevent the next "lone wolf" attack?

#1  Milwaukee Police Capt. Mark Stanmeyer said the man killed by police had a “lengthy arrest record,” but didn’t report any details of the past crimes. Investigators said the man’s gun came from a burglary in the neighboring town of Waukesha. The owner of the gun said 500 rounds of ammunition were also stolen.

“He was a nice good person, he was really respected. That’s why everyone came out. They’re angry,” YetNefataria Gordon told the Journal Sentinel.

#12  A real Charmer:
Today the Journal-Sentinel reports Sylville Smith, the man killed by police Saturday, had been charged in a shooting incident last year, though he was not convicted:

The man shot and killed by a Milwaukee police officer Saturday was charged last year in a shooting and then charged again, with trying to intimidate a witness in that same shooting, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has learned…

Smith was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety, a felony, on Feb. 3, 2015. Details of the shooting were not immediately clear from the documents.

While that case was pending, Smith was charged with felony witness intimidation after prosecutors said he was intimidating the victim in the first case.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Manbij residents smoke and shave to celebrate freedom from ISIS
[Iraq Sun] The residents of Manbij, a stronghold of the Islamic state (ISIS) holy warrior group, were freed after U.S. backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) wrested control over the area.

Nasser Haj Mansour of SDF said that Manbij "is under full control," adding that combing operations were on to search any remaining ISIS holy warriors in the town.

Reports stated that as the ISIS holy warriors were retreating from Manbij, they had seized 2000 citizens to be used as shields against the ongoing Arclight airstrikes. With SDF capturing the town, the ISIS freed some of the citizens while others managed to escape themselves.

When the Islamic holy warriors were finally pushed out, the city erupted into spontaneous celebrations. People came pouring out on the streets, men and women danced, sobbed, some men shaved their beards, a woman burnt a niqab and another smoked a cigarette.

Video footages also showed citizens cursing the Islamic state and crying out in disbelief that the ISIS had been overpowered.

U.S. backed Kurdish Syrian forces had launched an attack on Manbij in May but were only able to capture the city after 73 days of festivities with the holy warriors.

With Manbij under control, the SDF is looking to capture Raqqa, the self-proclaimed capital of the ISIS.

Reclaiming Manbij is being dubbed as a major victory in the fight against ISIS as the city was its link with the rest of the world, additionally, it was the point through which the group recruited foreign soldiers and traded in arms.

Bill Clinton: Email Classification Issues Are ‘Too Complicated To Explain To People’
[DAILYCALLER] The American public doesn’t understand that Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Edward Livingstone ...
is telling the truth about her classified emails because government classification issues are "too complicated to explain to people," Bill Clinton
...former Democratic president of the U.S. Bill was the second U.S. president to be impeached, the first to deny that oral sex was sex, the first to have difficulty with the definition of is...
said Friday.
Yes. The classification system is very complex. Compromise of Top Secret information will cause "exceptionally grave damage to national security." Release of Secret information will cause grave damage. Blabbing Confidential information will cause damage or be prejudicial to national security. For Official Use Only isn't actually a classification. It means it's for use only within the organization. Top Secret and Secret information may be further compartmented based on the need to protect sources and methods or strategy. The classification system is the same for U.S. and NATO intel agencies. The classification of the data is independent of the markings -- taking the markings off doesn't unclassify it. You can see that it's mind-numblingly complicated, way too complex for someone with a hazy understanding of the meaning of the word "is."
The former president was speaking in Las Vegas a presidential forum hosted by the Asian American Journalists Association when he was asked why his wife lied about her emails.

"This is the biggest load of bull I’ve ever heard," Clinton said during a lengthy response to the question.

He also threw two government officials -- FBI director James Comey and Sec. of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
-- under the bus while defending Hillary.
Too complicated is it? I held a TS/SCI for over a quarter century, try me.
I teach medicine at a major university, try me.

#11  Just recently she was shouting her standard "nothing marked classified in my emails!" trope. And, of course, this is literally true, since the word "classified" is not used as an actual classification marking. Southeast Asia
Southern militants or anti-junta forces behind Thai bombings?
[Straits Times] Though no one has claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in the past two days in southern Thailand, police chief Chakthip Chaijinda said the bombs found were similar to those used by separatist insurgents in the southern border districts. But General Chakthip said it was too soon to draw a clear conclusion.

The bombs that went off in Phuket, Surat Thani, Phang Nga, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Trang provinces were hidden in public places and detonated by mobile phones. At the same time, firebombs were used in arson attacks in Krabi and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces.

Security analyst Anthony Davis of IHS Jane's was convinced of a southern separatist link. While the conflict has largely been confined to Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala provinces, in the"deep south", there are signs that the militants are reaching beyond the region.

Last year, seven people were wounded when a car bomb went off in the basement of a mall on Samui Island, a tourist haven. Fires were reportedly started at the same time as the blast. Two years before that, police on the resort island of Phuket found and defused an improvised explosive device in a pick-up truck.

Thailand held a referendum on Sunday on a draft Constitution that institutionalizes military oversight over the future elected government. The draft charter was endorsed by over 60% of valid voters nationwide - but rejected in the deep south. The period leading up to the plebiscite was marked by an upsurge of insurgent bomb attacks.

Chulalongkorn University political analyst Thitinan Pongsudhirak, however, thinks it unlikely that the southern militants were behind the attacks. He wrote, "If they had wanted to send a message to the junta, the insurgents would more likely have attacked Bangkok, or major cities such as Chiang Mai or Phuket city. Domestic political unrest, a major source of small-scale bomb blasts over the past decade, since the ousting of the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra (in 2006), is therefore the most likely explanation."

Since the coup, Thailand has been thrown into political turmoil, with demonstrations by both sides of the political dispute "marred by periodic gunshots and small explosions". "The anti-junta forces who lost out in the referendum have an incentive to show bold defiance and lay down a challenge against the regime," Thitinan wrote.

Africa North
Sirte radio station retaken from IS
KIIL, where the hits used to happen
Tripoli, 13 August 2016:

An IS judge was among the dead found when Bunyan Marsous forces overran the Ouagadougou Centre, as today the radio station was also seized from the terrorists who are being squeezed into a largely residential area in the north of the town bordering Sirte’s sea shore.

The body of the judge, named by Lana as Abu-Mohamed Al-Ferjani was found with other terrorists near the centre on Thursday. BM media have posted pictures of the interior of the Ouagadougou which show the wreckage caused by the fighting, as well as the badly damaged Ibn Sina hospital which the terrorists seized in February 2015.

Triumphant fighters are show holding up captured IS banners while, despite the continued presence of snipers, the Libyan flag has been hoisted on make-shift flagpoles and from building high points.

Sirte’s radio station was one of the first locations to be taken over by IS in February last year and was used to broadcast IS propaganda. In the fighting in June the station briefly went off the air for a reason unknown but returned after a week.

There are unconfirmed reports that a cache of documents, only partly burnt, was discovered in the centre, giving details of IS personnel and also of planned terror operations in Italy.

Despite their evidently desperate military position, IS social media continues to put out positive messages. Perhaps in a deliberate echo of a Bunyan Marsous report last month on how civilian volunteers are keeping fighters fed on the front line, IS today posted pictures of the food that had been prepared for their men.

The terrorists do not appear to be running out of ammunition, nor food, even though the BM commanders maintain that they are completely surrounded. Support from the sea, which would seem to have kept terrorists in Benghazi in the field, is said to be impossible in Sirte. The Miratans have converted one of their Freezone port tugs into a gunboat. Last month a coastguard commander said there were other vessels patrolling off the coast to stop terrorists from escaping or receiving supplies and reinforcements.

Among the more than 30 air strikes launched by US warplanes, the targets reportedly destroyed included a tank, a truck bomb and various other vehicles and defensive positions. There has been no report of any significant ammunition dump being hit.

Britain
Crimethink!!!
Britain's biggest police force has set up a controversial unit – dubbed as ‘thought police’ by critics last night – to investigate offensive comments from the internet.

It will be supported by an army of volunteers trained to seek out anything they deem inappropriate on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

They will then report it to officers who will attempt to track down the culprits and possibly prosecute them, according to a report seen by The Mail on Sunday.

Scotland Yard is spending £1.7 million to set up its Twitter squad, which will have five detectives running it.

who the killer met after the victim posted an online ad to sell his car two years ago, prosecutors said.

The remains of the victim, Abdullah Abdullatif Alkadi, 23, were found alongside a freeway in the desert town of Indio, about 125 miles (200 km) east of Los Angeles, in October 2014, about a month after he went missing.

Alkadi, an international student at California State University, Northridge, had been last seen at his residence in the Los Angeles suburb of Reseda on Sept. 17.

Authorities said the killer, Agustin Rosendo Fernandez, 30, stabbed Alkadi to death that day, when he showed up at the victim's home to pick up an Audi A5 convertible that Alkadi had agreed to sell him for $35,000 in an earlier meeting between the two men.

Fernandez, who had found Alkadi's car-for-sale ad on Craigslist, kept the cash and then made off with the vehicle, disposing of Alkadi's body along the way. Prosecutors said the stolen car was later found parked at the killer's apartment in Long Beach.

Fernandez in June was tried and found guilty of first-degree murder in Alkadi's death. The jury also found in favor of special circumstances of murdering during a robbery and murder during a carjacking, as well as personal use of a deadly weapon.

Under the sentence handed down on Friday, Fernandez will serve a life term in state prison without the possibility of parole, according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

India-Pakistan
Battle for liberation of PoJK begins: Dr Jitendra
[Daily Excelsior] Giving a new twist to Party’s country wide Tringa rally which was led by him in border district of Kathua today, Union Minister of State in PMO with Independent Charge of North Eastern States, Dr Jitendra Singh said that with this yatra a new struggle has started for liberation of Pak occupied Jammu and Kashmire (PoJK) and it will culminate with hoisting of national tricolor at Kotli in Mirpur next time.

Talking to news hounds while launching the Tringa rally from Jatwal in Hiranagar tehsil of Kathua district, Dr Singh said that a new battle has started on the 70th Independence Day for liberation of PoJK which is an integral part of India and under forcible occupation of Pakistain from its clutches now as the people of that portion of undivided J&K State were facing many atrocities from the hands of Pak administration and rulers.

While taking a strong dig at Pakistain for blaming India for human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
violations in Kashmire, he said that it has become now open to entire world that if any country is involved in human rights violations in the world that is Pakistain in PoJK, Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
. The neighboring country has now been totally exposed before the international community for the same, he added.

He said in Pakistain the people who raise voice for their rights and protest against the atrocities by Pakistain authorities are being bombed and killed and their voice is being suppressed while the snuffies who kill innocent people in Kashmire and other parts of India are being declared deaders by Pakistain Government and this will not be tolerated at any cost now.

He said after the announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in all parties meeting yesterday that India will raise the issue of human rights violation of people in PoJK, Gilgit ‐Baltistan and Balochistan, the Tiranga yatra from this border district will be a begging in this regard.

"People in PoJK are fed up with atrocities of Pakistain and they are struggling for liberation from its clutches for last 70 years’’ he said, adding "our struggle launched today from this border district will only succeed when we hoist Indian Tricolor at Kotli in Mirpur district of PoJK next time’’.

Terming it another battle for Azadi, he said this time it is the struggle for liberation of PoJK as entire nation is elated by PM’s speech yesterday.

While rejecting any leniency for snuffies waging a war against the national unity and integrity, Dr Jitendra Singh quoted the PM’s speech yesterday saying that terrorist be treated as a terrorist and there are not two thoughts on the same. He, however, said that the poor of the poorest youth are being misguided by the separatists and Pak agents in Valley whose own children are studying abroad and working on lucrative posts, the Government will work to bring these youth into the mainstream as they were exploited by the Pak agents.

On holding talks with Hurriyat leadership, Dr Singh said there is confusion into the conglomerate itself. He made it clear that all stake holders including Kashmiri Pandits, PoJK refugees, people of Jammu and Ladakh as well as other minorities in the State are the stakeholders and not only the Hurriyat. The conglomerate is not more stake holder than these people and they need not to be given any extra importance as it is also a confused lot, he added.

Later addressing the rallies at Hiranagar and Kathua, Dr Singh highlighted the sacrifices of freedom fighters and said during the ’Azadi 70’ besides taking out the Tiranga rallies across the country the freedom fighters will be remembered.

He said in entire country if there is any pious area for starting this yatra that is border district of Kathua.

He said Prime Minister has said our next struggle will be liberation of PoJK and this message is to be conveyed to entire nation from here, he added.

Iraq: Isis executes five men for smuggling people into ‘lands of disbelief’
[ALMASDARNEWS] Members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(Isis/ISIS) terror group have killed five men accused of smuggling people out from the territories controlled by the group. Furat Province, a division of Isis in western Iraq, killed the men for allegedly smuggling people from IS-held territory into "lands of disbelief", the SITE Intelligence Group said.

Isis has been fighting against a military offensive that has driven bully boyz out from most of the territories they previously controlled and has resulted in the arrest of hundreds of holy warriors.

Iraqi forces recaptured the city of Fallujah,
... the City of Mosques, which might have somthing to do with why it's not called Center of Prosperity or a really nice place to raise your kids...
an Isis stronghold, in June.

The military fight has also prompted hundreds of ISIS snuffies to flee the city amid reports they were disguising themselves as refugees as they tried to leave.

Iraqi forces have been screening men and teenage boys leaving Fallujah, while the Iraqi military confirmed some of the snuffies were also posing as female refugees to get out of Fallujah.

Yatris among 18 injured in grenade attack at Poonch
[Daily Excelsior] Eighteen persons including nine yatris of Shri Budha Amarnath Ji pilgrimage were maimed, six of them seriously, when a suspected myrmidon lobbed grenade at Bagh Deodi near Akhara Mandir in the heart of Poonch town tonight, where the yatris had just entered for night halt after reaching there from Jammu, at about 8 pm tonight.

"The grenade was directly targeted at Budha Amarnath Ji pilgrims at Bagh Deodi near Akhara temple in Poonch town, where 1246 pilgrims had reached around 8 pm tonight from Jammu and other places and had just few minutes before entered the premises for night halt before leaving for Budha Amarnath Ji shrine tomorrow morning,’’ police sources said.

The pilgrims had boarded off from buses at Government Degree College Ground in Poonch, about 50 meters short of Bagh Deodi, and trekked to the night shelter set up for them by the administration when a myrmidon threw a grenade targeting the pilgrims and fled away.

The grenade went kaboom! with a bang at around 8 pm causing injuries to 18 people including nine pilgrims, who were entering Bagh Deodi, an ASI and rest local people.

SSP Poonch Jatinder Singh Johar, Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Haroon Malik, DySP Sagra Singh Slathia, DySP Mohan Lal and SHO Inspector Jatinder Raina and other officials from civil and police administration reached the spot immediately and started rescue operation. Police and para-military personnel joined by the locals shifted the injured to District Hospital, Poonch from where six injured were referred to Rajouri by road and then were in the process of being further referred to Jammu for specialized treatment in the Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu in view of their serious condition when the reports last came in.

Condition of a woman, whose identity hasn’t been established so far but she hailed from Jammu, was stated to be critical.

Police and para-military personnel carried out searches in the area but the myrmidon responsible for the grenade attack remained untraced. The grenade had fallen on the stairs of Bagh Deodi. A TATA Sumo, which was returning towards Bus Stand was damaged in the blast.

Sources said TATA Sumo contained impact of the grenade, which first hit the vehicle before landing at Bagh Deodi.

The Budha Amarnath Ji yatra, which had started on August 9, was due to culminate on August 18 along with Shri Amarnath Ji yatra coinciding with the pious occasion of Shravan Purnima and Raksha Bandhan.

Sources said the Yatra would proceed as per schedule to Shri Budha Amarnath Ji shrine tomorrow morning from Bagh Deodi, which serves as base camp and night halting point for the pilgrims. The yatra from Jammu and other places will also proceed to Poonch tomorrow.

Sources said a total of 1246 pilgrims had today reached Poonch base camp for Shri Budha Amarnath Ji yatra including 421 from Jammu and 825 from other places including enroute Jammu-Poonch.

The Grand Turk
Turkish PM sees no compromise with US over Gulen extradition
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s prime minister said on Saturday that Ankara could not compromise with the United States over its request for the extradition of Islamic holy man Fethullah Gulen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
which it blames for orchestrating last month’s attempted coup.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim made his comments to a group of Turkish journalists who quoted him as saying that US Vice President Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...
would visit Turkey on August 24.

US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
would also visit Turkey sometime in October, he said.

"The main element improving our relations with the US is the extradition of Gulen, where there is no room for negotiation," Yildirim was quoted as saying by CNN Turk’s general manager who was among journalists attending the briefing from Yildirim.

"Whether or not the anti-Americanism in Turkey will continue is also dependant on this," Yildirim said.

Turkey has been angered by what it sees as lukewarm condemnation by its Western allies of the abortive July 15-16 putsch against President Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish government, and Western criticism of a subsequent purge of military, judiciary and civil servants.

More than 240 people were killed in the violent coup attempt by a rogue faction in the Turkish military using fighter jets, helicopters and tanks.

Since the failed coup, almost 5,000 out of 81,000 people had been sacked and the others suspended, Yildirim said.

Turkey almost immediately increased pressure for the extradition from the United States of Gulen, a former ally of Erdogan who runs an influential network of international schools outside Turkey.

Yildirim on Saturday said that the United States had improved its attitude on the issue of Gulen’s extradition, but he did not elaborate on this.

Maintaining Ankara’s criticism of the Moslem holy man who denies any involvement in the putsch, Yildirim said on Saturday that Gulen ran an exclusive communication channel with 50,000 using it.

Earlier on Saturday Turkey took exception to remarks by a top UN human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
official for saying that Ankara should stem its "thirst for Dire Revenge" against internal critics following the coup.

Turkish foreign ministry front man Tanju Bilgic, in a statement, said Zeid’s comments were unacceptable.

Swedish Prof: Hot Weather, Not Rapey Migrants Driving Sweden’s Place As Rape Capital Of World
[BREITBART] Thankfully, someone has figured out why all these rapes are taking place in Sweden. Börje Svensson, a psychotherapist and “an expert on sexual criminals”, was interviewed in one of the biggest Swedish newspapers recently about Sweden’s rape epidemic. His conclusion? The good, hot, summer weather.
It's supposed to go up to 95 today, which isn't quite body temperature but close. The humidity is approaching 128 percent. The urge to bump sweaty bellies is overwhelming. People are jumping each other everywhere you look. And that's not even downtown Baltimore!
Providing the perfect reason that absolves the Swedish establishment of all responsibility, Svensson described how we have been a bit unlucky with the weather this year. Hopefully we will have a colder summer next year and sexual crimes will then be an old memory linked to that one hot Swedish summer. If by any chance, there are still rapes during a colder summer, our experts will simply find another scapegoat rather than looking straight at the imported criminals. Perhaps fewer flies, or high ocean levels. Say hello to the mental hospital named Sweden everyone.

Ten Most Troubling Finds Inside House Probe of Pentagon's ‘Distorted' Intel on Islamic State
"9 - Even after whistleblower complaints and the "alarming" internal survey last year, the Pentagon took no steps to correct its allegedly distorted intelligence process.

The Joint Task Force is troubled that despite receiving the whistleblower complaint in May 2015 and receiving alarming survey results in December 2015, neither CENTCOM, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, nor the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) took any demonstrable steps to improve the analytic climate within CENTCOM. The survey results alone should have prompted CENTCOM and IC leaders to take corrective action without other inducements."

US-trained commandos capture Shaboob bomb expert in Galkayo
US-trained Somali commandos, Danab (Lightning), have captured five Al Shabaab militants including a Sudanese explosive expert in central Galkayo city, Garowe Online reports.

Somali security officials have confirmed the operation carried out by Danab, five days after Puntland refuted reports disclosing commando troopers on ant-terrorism mission. On August 6, Galkayo Airport General Manager, Saed Abdirahman Yusuf (Dhagaweyne), said, they were firmly in charge of airport security.

Somali National Army (SNA) Commander, Ali Bashe Mohamed, told state-run station, Radio Mogadishu that the five were nabbed in anti-terror raid. He did not specify where the five were captured, but insisted that they were tipped off on the cell.

It is yet unclear where the seized Al Shabaab members are being held.

ISIS Terrorist Tells Feds He Has Jihadist Brothers In Mexico

Site connected to Russian hackers posts Republican emails
[MSN] A website tied to the hacking scandal of the Democratic Party has now posted a small batch of leaked emails from Republican campaigns and state GOP staffers.
Rather more snoozy than the Dem emails.
The emails on the site, known as DCLeaks, appear to be from state party officials and former Republican presidential candidates, including Sen. Lindsey Graham
... the endangered South Carolina RINO...
(R-S.C.). The messages range from June to October of 2015.

The DNC hacker or hackers known as Guccifer 2.0 used DC Leaks to promote leaks from a Clinton staffer's email to The Smoking Gun, though the hacker claimed not to have been involved with the theft of the messages.

Most of the messages coordinate campaign activities, solicit funds, or invite or RSVP to events. The archive is largely the procedural minutia of running campaigns or state parties.

The emails include a wide array of constituent email addresses. Many appear to be responses to mass-emails from concerned party supporters writing in to their delegates. One reply to a Stop Hillary PAC fundraising email targeting Democrats lack of support for the Benghazi commission reads, "Don't the Republicans have a majority in Congress? Isn't John It is not pronounced 'Boner!' Boehner
... the occasionally weepy leader of House Republicans...

Imam, Another Man Killed In Double Shooting After Leaving Mosque In Queens
Yemen? Libya? Syria? Baghdad?, why no...Queens, NY
An imam and another man are dead following a double shooting in Queens on Saturday afternoon.

CBS2's Valerie Castro reported Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and 64-year-old associate, Tharam Uddin, were each shot in the head while on their way home from a local mosque by a man who came up behind them. The shooting took place near Liberty Avenue and 79th Street in Ozone Park around 2 p.m.

Witnesses said the imam from the Al-Furqan Masjid mosque had just delivered an afternoon service and was walking home with another member of the mosque when both men were gunned down.

The motivation behind the violence is still unclear, but many from the surrounding community who attend the mosque are calling this a hate crime.

"After prayer, he taught us how to live peacefully and how to help each other," said Nazrul Islam of Ozone Park.

"A family man has been lost and a scholarly imam has been lost and we are devastated and we want … peace," said Kobir Chowdhury of Ozone Park.

"We feel really insecure and unsafe in a moment like this," said Millat Uddin of Ozone Park. "It's really threatening to us, threatening to our future, threatening to our mobility in our neighborhood, and we're looking for the justice."
Kicker:
Police said there is nothing to indicate that they were targeted because of their faith
.

Police added there is surveillance video in the area showing a man running with a gun

#2  Breitbart: New York Muslims Blame Donald Trump for Imam Shooting

False flag possibly ?

#3  Muslims blamed Trump for this professional appearing hit but in the past it has often been the case that someone within the mosque had a beef. The army moves into Zuetina
Benghazi, 13 August 2016:

The army’s 153 Infantry Brigade today moved into Zuetina but stopped short of entering the oil terminal which is controlled by the Petroleum Facilities Guard headed by Ibrahim Jadhran.

A long four-lane-wide convoy of assorted military and civilian vehicles moved slowly into the town. Footage posted by the army showed flag-waving locals apparently giving the soldiers an enthusiastic welcome.

There were no reports of any response from PFG forces in the terminal.

On Thursday, the French, German, Italian, Spanish, UK and US governments issued a joint warning that they were increasingly concerned at the rising tensions at Zuetina.

They called on all parties to refrain from hostilities and avoid any action that could damage or disrupt the country’s energy infrastructure. They also insisted that Zuetina, along with all other export terminals, should be handed over to the Government of National Accord.

In a move that surprised those who thought he was dedicated to an autonomous Cyrenaica, the former federalist Jadhran this March announced his support for the GNA. His guards shut the terminal last November and apparently repelled a seaborne attack by IS in January.

The export terminal is a key source of employment in the town. There has long been tension between locals and the PFG and other outsiders who have often mounted protests that stopped tankers from loading. Three years ago, townspeople became so fed up with yet another disruption that they stormed the port and forced it to resume operations.

ISIS ‘on the ropes’ in northern Syria: Pentagon
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Coalition-supported local forces fighting ISIS in northern Syria have recaptured large areas around the city of Manbij and put the extremists “on the ropes,” a Pentagon official said Friday.

Since the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) began an operation to capture Manbij on May 21, they have wrested control of more than 1,000 square kilometers (385 square miles) of territory from ISIS.

Manbij is a key town in the anti-ISIS struggle because the extremists were using it as a waypoint between the Turkish border and Raqqa, the extremists’ de facto capital.

SDF forces, backed by US-led coalition air power, have now retaken much of Manbij, though pockets of resistance remain in the city’s north.

“Although fighting in Manbij continues, ISIS is clearly on the ropes. It has lost the center of Manbij, it has lost control of Manbij,” Pentagon deputy press secretary Gordon Trowbridge said.

ISIS fighters fleeing the city on Friday seized around 2,000 civilians to use as “human shields,” the SDF and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

Trowbridge said US officials were aware of the reports but unable to confirm them.

ISIS “has consistently shown a willingness to put innocent lives at risk, in blatant violation not only of the laws of armed conflict but of common human decency,” he said.

Since fighting for Manbij began, US-led strikes have taken out more than 50 of ISIS’s heavy weapons and destroyed more than 600 fortified fighting positions, Trowbridge said.

But the job of clearing the city will be complicated after the extremists left behind hundreds of mines and booby traps, he added.

Prager: Pope Francis and the Decline of the West
"Five days later, during his flight returning to Rome from World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland, Pope Francis gave a press conference. He was asked about the French priest and Islam by Antoine-Marie Izoard, a journalist with I.Media, a French Catholic news agency. Izoard said:

'Catholics are in a state of shock -- and not only in France -- following the barbaric assassination of Father Jacques Hamel in his church while he was celebrating Holy Mass. Four days ago ... you told us once again that all religions want peace. But this holy priest, eighty-six years old, was clearly killed in the name of Islam. So I have two brief questions, Holy Father. When you speak of these violent acts, why do you always speak of terrorists but not of Islam? ... And then, ... what concrete initiative can you launch or perhaps suggest in order to combat Islamic violence?'

Pope Francis responded:

'I don't like to speak of Islamic violence because every day when I open the newspapers I see acts of violence, here in Italy: someone kills his girlfriend, someone else his mother-in-law...and these violent people are baptized Catholics! They are violent Catholics...If I spoke about Islamic violence, I would also have to speak about Catholic violence.'"

Amazing. See"False Analogy."

It's In The Koran - Judge NOT Impressed
A Texas couple has been found guilty of engaging in forced labor of their two "servants," and a judge, who was disgusted with their actions, has banished them from the United States.

Hassan al-Homoud, 46, and his wife Zainab al-Hosani, 39, pleaded guilty to the crimes of holding a person against their will, and forced labor, otherwise known as SLAVERY. They tried to convince the judge that their actions were acceptable because their Prophet Muhammad, the creator of the religion of Islam, kept slaves of his own. Therefore, any punishment that they received would be Islamophobic.

District Judge Orlando Garcia was having none of that. Nor did he chance having the couple go to an American prison where they might be out on good behavior, and then possibly resume their religion inspired actions. He knew that, as followers of Sharia Law, the couple posed a danger to the United States, and as such, banished them from the country. Before they left, however, the judge ordered that the slave-owners pay each of their victims a sum of $60,000 to compensate their efforts.

According to the complaint prepared by Homeland Security’s Special Agent Edward Acuna, the problems are believed to have begun when al-Homoud applied for visas for two individuals, one from Indonesia, and the other from Bangladesh.

In the application for the visas, al-Homoud stated the two would be paid as a housekeeper, and a personal servant, and would collect a monthly income of $1573.87. This was a lie as al-Homoud paid his slaves nothing, but it does point out the fact that the applications that visa seekers, immigrants colonists, and refugees fill out in order to gain access to the country, the same ones that Obama has heralded as foolproof in thwarting forces of Evil from exploiting, can easily be deceived with faulty information.

Terror suspects being rounded up in Benghazi
Benghazi, 13 August 2016:

Security forces in Benghazi appear to have begun to arrest people suspected of terrorist connections. Police reported that they had detained one man whose phone was said to contain the phone numbers of “extremists in Tripoli”.

It is unclear how many other arrests have been made so far nor whether the operation is intelligence-led. A group of the city’s police is being sent to Cyprus to train in electronic surveillance.

On Friday Benghazi council was ousted and a city military commander appointed by Major General Abdul Razzaq Al-Nazhuri, since June the military governor of northern Cyrenaica.

There have long been concerns that when IS and Ansar Al-Sharia terrorists, along with their allies in the Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council, are finally defeated in Gwarsha, Ganfouda and their Sabri and Souk Al-Hut outposts, the Islamists will revert to a more tradition terror campaign, using sleeper cells and hermetically-sealed networks.

If a general campaign is indeed being mounted against suspected terrorist sympathisers, it will add to the concern that the east of the country is becoming increasingly militarised.

Meanwhile the military advance against the terrorists appears stalled. IS claimed today that it had hit an army assembly point in Gwarsha with artillery and heavy-machine gun fire. They said that their counter attack had forced the soldiers to withdraw. It was not possible to obtain a comment on the firefight from the army.

Iran to receive S-300 system from Russia any day now before 2017
Iran will completely receive the S-300 air defense system from Russia by the end of 2016, Mohammad Javad Jamali, an Iranian MP said.

Jamali, who is a member of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said Russia has fulfilled its commitments regarding the issue, Fars news agency reported Aug. 13.

Commenting on Iranian lawsuit against Russia over the non-delivery of S-300 air defense system, Jamali said that most likely there will be no need for that, given that Russia carries out its commitments.

The $800-million Moscow-Tehran contract to deliver Russian S-300 system to Iran was signed in 2007. It was suspended after the adoption of the UN Security Council’s sanctions on Iran in mid-2010.

In 2011, Iran sued Russia in the Geneva Arbitration Court after Moscow suspended the contract.

Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the S-300 delivery ban in April 2015, shortly after the six world powers and Iran reached a framework agreement over Tehran’s disputed nuclear program.

Russia has delivered a half of the air defense system to Iran under the existing contract.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Jamali said that a complete and correct implementation of contract to supply the S-300 systems to Iran will help boost mutual ties and cooperation with Russia in all areas.

The two countries are moving towards a strategic partnership, he added.

More than 2,000 Isis hostages freed from Manbij
The Islamic State stronghold of Manbij, in northern Syria, has fallen to allied Arab and Kurdish fighters, who freed more than 2,000 hostages held by the terrorist group. A spokesman for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces said they had taken over the city after the last Isis militants fled on Friday. According to the SDF and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the freed hostages had been used as “human shields”.

Sharfan Darwish, of the SDF-allied Manbij military council, told Reuters: “The city is now fully under our control but we are undertaking sweeping operations.”

The Pentagon deputy press secretary Gordon Trowbridge said: “Although fighting in Manbij continues, ISIL is clearly on the ropes. It has lost the centre of Manbij, it has lost control of Manbij.”

The Arab-Kurdish alliance had expelled most of the Isis fighters from Manbij by last week but dozens continued to put up a tough resistance until Friday.

NDS-ISI cooperation deal can help counter terrorism: Sartaj Aziz
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Pakistain’s foreign affairs adviser Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
has said an intelligence sharing deal between the Afghan intelligence and Pak intelligence agencies could help counter terrorism.

Speaking during a presser on Friday, Aziz called on Afghanistan to help create a formal intelligence-sharing deal between National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) and Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).

The call by Aziz came despite allegations against the Afghan intelligence for supporting Jamaat-ul-Ahrar which grabbed credit behind a deadly attack in Quetta that left at least 70 dead.

"It has already been known that this group (JuA) is somewhat indirectly being supported by the NDS," Aziz asserted.

This comes as reports regarding the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Afghan and Pak intelligence agencies sparked uproar in the country earlier last year.

The MoU was apparently concluded with an aim to share intelligence and bolster cooperation in their fight against Lion of Islam groups.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the Afghan officials have long been criticizing Pakistain’s role in fight against terrorism and harbouring the holy warrior groups fighting against the Afghan government security forces.

Led by the 104th Brigade of the Republican Guard, the Syrian Armed Forces destroyed this terrorist headquarters in Al-Jabiliyah, killing several members of the Islamic State, while also capturing the latter’s bulldozer and heavy weapons.

Also in Deir Ezzor City, the Russian and Syrian air forces conducted joint Arclight airstrikes that targeted the Islamic State’s positions inside the Al-Rashidiyah District.

A military source told Al-Masdar News on Friday night that the Syrian and Russian Arclight airstrikes destroyed a dozen vehicles that belonged to the Islamic State, including a handful of trucks mounted with anti-aircraft machine guns.

The Russian Air Force would conclude the day by striking an Islamic State gathering at Ayyash village in northern Deir Ezzor; this attack forced the aforementioned terrorist group to retreat towards safety in order to avoid accumulating more casualties.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Rioting Milwaukee ferals prompt call for National Guard
[REUTERS] Milwaukee County's sheriff called on Sunday for the National Guard to be deployed in a predominantly black neighborhood where protesters set off a night of fiery rioting in response to the police killing of an armed suspect.

The neighborhood, which has a reputation for poverty and crime, appeared calm at midday on Sunday after businesses were burned, cars set ablaze and gunshots fired by demonstrators angered by the police killing.

Police presence in the Sherman Park neighborhood was low with some residents milling around and others cleaning up debris.

Police violence against black men and women has sparked intermittent, sometimes violent protests in U.S. cities from Ferguson, Missouri, to Baltimore and New York over the last two years.

The outrage has given rise to the Black Lives Matter movement and touched off a national debate over race and policing in the United States.

Sheriff David Clarke, nationally known as a conservative voice in Republican politics, asked that the National Guard be mobilized to help contain the protests, said Fran McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

She said he made his request publicly after meeting with Republican Governor Scott Walker and Major General Donald Dunbar of the Wisconsin National Guard, the two men who would consider deploying the Guard.

The sheriff’s office typically oversees county-level law enforcement matters such as county courts, jails, and pretrial services but deployed officers and equipment to help quell Saturday night's riots

The trouble started on Saturday afternoon. A patrol officer fatally shot a suspect who fled after police stopped his vehicle, police said.

#4  Unfortunately it wont matter one bit to some individuals if that is what the bodycam shows. Milwaukee has become one of the more violent cities in the nation with most of the violence taking place in just a few areas. Some of this is the result of Little Richie when he was Mayor in Chicago. Chicago at the time was tearing down the projects such as Cabrini Green and encouraging some of the residents to move on to other pastures. This incident follows another police shooting in Wauwatosa about four weeks ago.

Southeast Asia
Malaysia arrests ISIS suspects for bar grenade attack
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Malaysian police have jugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
nine Lion of Islams, including two suspected of carrying out a grenade attack, claimed by ISIS, at a nightspot on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in June, the country’s police chief said on Saturday.

A known Malaysian ISIS fighter in Syria, Muhammad Wanndy Muhammad Jedi, had said in a posting on his Facebook page that the group had carried out the June 28 attack on a bar in the Puchong neighborhood that maimed eight people.

If the claim was genuine it would have been the first attack by ISIS on Malaysian soil.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement the two men who carried out the attack had been caught in the northeastern state of Kelantan, where they had been awaiting instructions from Wanndy to carry out further attacks.

"Following on from their arrest, police managed to seize a grenade, and it was suspected it would have been used in a planned attack," Khalid said.

He said two other people had been arrested for helping to hide the suspects.

Police had also tracked down a suspected ISIS member, whose cell had received orders from Wanndy, and had threatened attacks on the police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and on government buildings in the country’s administrative capital of Putrajaya, Khalid said.Malaysia arrests ISIS suspects for bar grenade attack

Others arrested included a 17-year-old in the eastern state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo, who was believed to have been planning a ’lone wolf’ attack on non-Moslems after communicating with another Malaysian ISIS member in Syria.

Meanwhile,
...back at the saw mill, Scarface Al had tied Little Nell to the log and was about to turn on the buzz saw...
three foreigners, who were ex-military, were arrested in Kuala Lumpur for allegedly using the country as a transit point to secure fake travel documents and plan an attack on a Middle East nation, Khalid said.

Authorities in Moslem-majority Malaysia have been on high alert since IS-linked gunnies carried out an armed attack in the capital of neighboring Indonesia in January.

Police said last week 230 people, including 200 Malaysians, have been arrested since 2013 for involvement in Lion of Islam activities.

In June, ISIS released a video of its fighters from Southeast Asia calling on its supporters to unify under one umbrella group and launch attacks in the region.

Clinton Foundation Probe Underway in 3 Cities
"The Daily Caller reports that there is indeed an investigation into the Clinton Foundation. A probe is underway in three cities, Little Rock, Arkansas, New York City, and Washington, DC. At the heart of these probes is whether or not there were any illegal, or unethical, activities between the Clinton Foundation and employees of the Department of State. At least two of then Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton′s top staffers, Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin, were essentially ′double-dipping′, working both for the State Department and doing consulting work indirectly for the Clinton Foundation through a third-party contractor. Emails from both Mills and Abedin recently obtained by Judicial Watch by way of a Freedom of Information Act request show that they did work to provide special services and favors on behalf of the Clinton Foundation as part of their duties to the State Department.

At least one of the 44 emails obtained by the Judicial Watch FIOA request shows that Hillary Clinton was aware of the activity. The Daily Caller story indicates that three federal prosecutors and agents of the FBI in the cities mentioned above are investigating possible violations of federal laws and regulations. Officially, neither the FBI nor the DOJ would confirm that there are any criminal probes into the Clinton Foundation. But, given the revelations from Judicial Watch, it would seem that such investigations are warranted.

In New York City, the investigation is being led by U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara. He has a record of many convictions involving Wall Street, banks and hedge fund firms. Bharara took down two prominent New York politicians, State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, and Republican Majority Leader for NY, Dean Skelos. However, Bill and Hillary Clinton are two very large fish when it comes to political power. Indicting them will not be easy, let alone convicting either. Especially as Hillary is running for president.

This is just one more reason why we must elect Donald J. Trump in November. Not just to keep Hillary Rodham Clinton out of the White House, but to enable a proper, unobstructed investigation, and if needed, indictment and prosecution of anyone involved in graft and corruption. America is languishing in the stench of decades of corrupt politics. The Clintons are creatures of corruption. They have a long history of lies, schemes and abuses of power. If we are to ever make America great again, and have real justice, we need a demonstration of will to no longer tolerate nor accept criminality at any level. Especially at the White House. The Clinton Foundation scandal may be just the tip of a giant, nasty iceberg."

Iraq
100 ISIS Terrorists Trapped in Ramadi Underground Tunnels
[Iraq Sun] According to a report by Mizan, as translated by IFP, before the terrorists' hideout was discovered, fierce festivities broke out between Iraq's security forces and the murderous Moslems who were lurking in the tunnels.

Most of the murderous Moslems were foreigners and a few of them were Arab.

Earlier last weekend, Major General Ismail al-Mahlawi, the commander of Anbar Operations Command, told al-Sumaria that security personnel had fully regained control over Khalidiya Island, which lies nearly 90 kilometres (55 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad.

He said tens of bad boyz were potted in the liberation operation.

Lieutenant General Raed Shaker Jawdat, the Federal Police Forces' commander, separately said that Iraqi security forces had killed nearly 200 ISIS murderous Moslems and disarmed 250 bombs in the operation to free the Khalidiya Island.

Terror Networks
The brittle world the Arabs built, then destroyed
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Much has been written about the Arab uprisings, and the great unraveling of states and societies that ensued in their wake.
In which multiple dictatorships were cast off in rapid succession, with mixed but near uniformly distasteful results.
Scholars looked for precedents in other regions and epochs to compare and contrast. Historians focused on the nature of the fractured modern Arab states and their inherently questionable political legitimacy. Sociologists and demographers searched for long term trends to gauge the changing dynamics between urban and rural communities, the persistence of ethnic, sectarian and tribal loyalties, as well as modes of mobility, social and cultural empowerment and marginalization of certain social strata either because of poor education or subtle and unsubtle discrimination. And economists analyzed the structural deficiencies of the rentier state, and the impact of income disparity, rampant corruption and stagnation.
I think it has to do with language. Language shapes the user's thoughts, and is in turn shaped by the way its users think.
When the definitive history or histories of these turbulent times of unwinding and disintegration are written, they will likely avoid using one Meta narrative to explain the colossal collapse of whole societies in real time into total anarchy and unfathomable violence and wanton destruction, that many a times were live-streamed and captured in high definition videos documenting how the Arabs and other communities that lived among them, with a helping hand from their neighbors and powers beyond the seas, were destroying the brittle world they have built.

But much of what was written by scholars was reductionist, bland or lacking in insights as to what makes individuals and groups behave the way they do in seemingly apocalyptic times. And somehow in these narratives the economic data and charts, the nature of the despotic state and the changing demographic and societal dynamics, failed to go beyond providing a superficial, incomplete explanation.

Six chronicles of a death foretold
Years from now, we will most likely get a better insight into what the Arabs did to themselves, or what happened to them during their collective fateful crossing into a purgatory like universe from which there is no return, by reading the great novels chronicling the journey, or by the first accounts of the witnesses watching the tragedy and the actors living in it, as conveyed to us by insightful journalists, whose front row seats allow them to smell the stench of death, to hear the cries of victims and to observe real men and women oscillating between hope and despair.

In the current issue of the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
Magazine, the gifted journalist Scott Anderson gives us a heart wrenching account of the unraveling through the piercing eyes of six disparate characters from Egypt, Libya, Syria, Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan, who went through the upheavals, and were scarred by them but lived to tell their tales of woes, despair and hope that they experienced during their physical and psychological crossings. In the long article, (I almost said novella) titled "Fractured lands: how the Arab world came apart", Anderson’s characters, like all complex and tragic characters that inhabit the truly great novels of the 19th and 20th centuries convey in various degrees of eloquence and bluntness a tragic and visceral sense of their worlds, and they ended up giving us six narratives that complement each other’s, even though the characters never met personally.

Two warriors and two activists
We first meet the gruff Dr. Azar Mirkhan, a Kurdish medical doctor and a Peshmerga warrior who is obsessed with Kurdish independence and total separation from the Arabs of Iraq whom he sees as the implacable enemies of the Kurds. Dr. Mirkhan fought the Iraqi army as well as ISIS. He conveys a sense of guilt because he did not arrive on time to help the Yezidi Kurds living on mount Sinjar who were massacred by ISIS in the summer of 2014. Then we are introduced to Professor of mathematics, Laila Soueif, the strong wiled matriarch of a prominent Egyptian dissident family, whose struggle for democracy and dignity mirrors that of Egypt. Laila Soueif’s husband Ahmed, her son Alaa, and daughter Sanaa were imprisoned and tortured under the various autocratic regimes that ruled Egypt in recent years. In one of the most poignant passages in the article, Ahmed the famed human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
lawyer told his defendant son in court, "I wanted you to inherit a democratic society that guards your rights, my son, but instead I passed on the prison cell that held me, and now holds you."

In Libya, we encounter a young military cadet named Majdi el-Mangoush who fought in the rebellion against Muammar el-Qadaffy and lost dear friends, but refused to lose hope even while Libya continues its descent to chaos. He continues his studies, while cherishing his solitude as a former warrior in a Pine ’forest’ he planted in the desert.

We then witness the incredible evolution of a young shy Iraqi women Khulood al-Zaidi, into a determined advocate for women’s rights in the provincial city of Kut, before the Shiite turbans drove her out of town and into exile in Jordan. From Jordan her journey led her to temporary residence in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, then back to Jordan to save her family, and finally, through the torturous watery passage across the Mediterranean to Greece before settling first in Germany then Austria. For Anderson, Khulood exemplify "the extraordinary power of the individual to bring change" to chaotic societies. But, alas there is a painful paradox here "It is people like Khulood who must see to the mending of these fractured lands. Yet, it is those very people, the best their nations have to offer, who are leaving in search of a better life elsewhere. Today, Austria’s gain is Iraq’s loss."

The Syrian exile and the condemned Iraqi
Through the eyes of a young Syrian student Majd Ibrahim, we see the gradual destruction of one of Syria’s ancient cities, Homs, and the depredations of both the Assad regime and some of the opposition groups. Ibrahim also went through his psychological and physical passages and ironically ended up living in Dresden, Germany, the city that was destroyed by the Allies during WWII, the same city that comes to mind when one is confronted by the destruction that has been visited on Homs. Finally, Anderson bring us to meet an unlikely character, Wakaz Hassan, a young Iraqi, who already crossed into the heart of darkness when he joined ISIS, before escaping their clutches to end up in a crowded jail in Iraqi Kurdistan. Wakaz, matter-of-factly described how he executed six blindfolded and handcuffed men, as he was ordered by ISIS. Wakaz’s life maybe the most precarious, because when he loses his usefulness as a source of intelligence on ISIS to his Kurdish captors, he will be handed to Iraqi authorities for execution.

The beginning of the unraveling
Anderson correctly traces the beginning of the unraveling to the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. (One can even go back to 1980 when the calamitous Iraqi invasion of Iran began and lasted 8 years, then lead to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, which in turn hastened the American invasion of Iraq). Anderson, rarely speaks directly, leaving that mission to his characters, but when he does, his observations are profound and jarring. "In my professional travels over the decades, I had found no other region to rival the Arab world in its utter stagnation." He then focuses on the entrenched culture of grievances. "One of the Arab world’s most prominent and debilitating features, I had long felt, was a culture of grievance that was defined less by what people aspired to than by what they opposed. They were anti-Zionist, anti-West, anti-imperialist."

In his attempt to answer what went wrong, Anderson avoids providing "a single answer." But he observes that the three countries that have disintegrated the most, "as to raise doubt that they will ever again exist as functioning states -- Iraq, Syria and Libya -- are all members of that small list of Arab countries created by Western imperial powers in the early 20th century." While the lack of "national coherence" is a factor in the unraveling, one could say that if good, accountable governance was created, the outcome might have been different. In other words, the problem was not necessarily or exclusively in the artificial boundaries and weak national coherence, but precisely in what happened and did not happen within these boundaries that led to the great unraveling.

#7  Unraveling???

Those people have been killing each other and fighting over the succession to Mohammed for over 1200 years. They still piss and moan about the Crusades...a 1000 years ago and whine and snivel all the while.

They have done more harm to themselves over the years than any single event or series of events the "imperialists" could bring to them.

Remember Tamerlain and the 1.5 million massacred in Baghdad and that was a leader who is called a "defender of the faith" by Moslems...burned the University of Baghdad and threw ever book and scroll in the libraries into the Euphrates River...turning it black for miles.

The only time the Moslems functioned is when they hired Jews and Christians to take care of the administration while they indulged in court intrigue and assassinations. Even their fierce Janissaries were Christians and Jews.

We are locked into a battle of good versus evil. Islam which promotes paradise through a culture of death and destruction against Christianity and Judaism which believe in love, peace, and paradise through brotherly love and forgiveness.

The problem, for all of the excuses the academics want to heap on the situation, is Islam and there is no other way to cut the salami.

If Erdogan isn't stopped the next failed state/hell hole will be Turkey.

When I was in Libya, I had hope that cooler heads would prevail but the leadership was too chicken shit to deal with the militias and the Islamists in a meaningful way.

In Iraq, much of the same early energy and hopefulness is gone. Same story, but I will dump Iraq right in George's lap for all of the wrongheaded and stupid things that Paul Bremer did in Iraq that drove vast numbers of them straight into the arms of Al Qaeda.

#8  In my professional travels over the decades, I had found no other region to rival the Arab world in its utter stagnation.

The "stagnation" had been taking place for over a century, and accelerated after WWII. The Arab world had been "unraveling" for 50 years before the US invaded Iraq.

In fact, the invasion was an attempt to transform the Middle East by creating a functioning democracy. The Bush administration tried to do it on the cheap and underestimated the backlash from Iraq's neighbors.

#9  When we had intimidating force bracketing Iran geopolitically, in Iraq, Afghanistan and a credible NATO ally in Turkey, we had the power to induce change there through a mix of internal revolution and confrontation from the US and a coalition of the willing countries at risk for Iranian domination. No one had the balls to take that on and endure the costs, and all the decrement of our influence and sway in the region has been the fruits of this gutlessness. now, thanks to our feckless and frankly incompetent POS POTUS, the task will be more than we can do. God help Israel.

#10  And here in the US we no longer have good, accountable government, and we are doing well in developing our own culture of grievance.

#11  I always SMH at people that have to reduce any situation to a single blame point.

"Arab" really isn't a blame point; it's a... label for a condition. In my case, it's an opinion forged over years of wandering around that area.

According to Al Arabiya’s correspondent the number in attendance was significantly lower with members in attendance numbering between 80 and 85.

Despite this, the militias continued in their attempt to hold the meeting and vote amid a heavy presence of gunnies, despite the low attendance.

Yasser Alraeini, the minister of state for the implementation of the Yemeni dialogue outputs, told Al Arabiya that Saturday’s session would have no legitimate effect.

Alraeini added that the ousted Saleh was plotting to eliminate the rest of the parliament’s legitimacy.

The Grand Turk
Turkey: UN rights boss’ comments ‘unacceptable’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on Saturday criticized a top UN human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
official for saying Ankara should stem its "thirst for Dire Revenge" after a failed coup attempt and denied people’s rights were being violated in a purge of officials and professional ranks.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein called on Ankara this week to uphold the rights of detainees held since the July 15-16 abortive putsch.

Authorities have suspended, detained or begun investigating tens of thousands of soldiers, police, judges, journalists and civil servants.

Turkish foreign ministry front man Tanju Bilgic, in a statement, said Zeid’s comments were unacceptable.

"It is at best an unfortunate statement for a UN official tasked with guarding human rights to say ’he has no sympathy’ for coup plotters instead of condemning these forces of Evil who have attempted a bloody coup," Bilgic said.

Western allies worry that President Tayyip Erdogan is using the putsch and the purge that has followed to tighten his grip on power.

But many Turks are angered by what they see as a lack of Western sympathy over a violent coup attempt by a rogue faction in the Turkish military using fighter jets, helicopters and tanks in which 240 people died.

Erdogan vowed to rid Turkey of the network of US-based holy man Fethullah Gulen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
, whose followers in the security forces, judiciary and civil service he accuses of orchestrating the attempted power grab and of plotting to overthrow the state.

Gulen denies these charges.

Bilgic said Turkey’s measures following the coup have been consistent with the fundamental principles of rule of law and human rights and repeated Ankara’s calls for the Commissioner to visit the country.
