The Grand Turk
Update - Turkey's Erdogan blames child bomber for attack that killed 51
[Reuters] At least 51 people were killed when a suicide bomber aged between 12 and 14 attacked a wedding party in the Turkish city of Gaziantep late on Saturday, the president said.

The attack was the deadliest in a series of bombings in Turkey this year, and President Tayyip Erdogan said Islamic State was likely behind it.

"Initial evidence suggests it was a Daesh attack," Erdogan said, using an Arabic name for the hardline Sunni Islamist group, during a visit on Sunday to Gaziantep, which has a sizeable Kurdish community. He said 69 people were in hospital and 17 were "heavily injured".

A destroyed suicide vest was found at the blast site, officials said.

Islamic State has been blamed for other similar attacks in Turkey, often targeting Kurdish gatherings in an effort to inflame ethnic tensions. The deadliest was last October, when suicide bombers killed more than 100 people at a rally of pro-Kurdish and labor activists in Ankara.

Saturday's attack comes with Turkey still in shock just a month after Erdogan and the government survived an attempted coup by rogue military officers, which Ankara blames on U.S.-based Islamist preacher Fethullah Gulen. Gulen has denied the charge.

The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) said the wedding party was for one of its members. The groom was among those injured, but the bride was not hurt.

The bomb went off as guests spilled out into the streets of the city close to the Syrian border after the traditional henna night party, when guests have their hands and feet painted.

Women and children, including a three-month-old baby, were among the dead, witnesses said.

Blood and burn marks stained the walls of the narrow lane where the blast hit. Women in white and checkered scarves wept outside the morgue waiting for word on missing relatives.

Don't Be like the Man Who Married His Mother-in-Law
[American Thinker] There's a strange story out of India in the Daily Mail about a man who divorced his wife to marry his mother-in-law and now regrets his decision and is trying to undo it.

In a way this reminds me of conservatives whose preferred candidates lost the nomination and now as Never Trumpers are making the election of Hillary more possible. It's a variation of the song "You Can't Always get What You Want", but instead of the next line being "but you can sometimes get what you need", it reads, "but you can get what you don't want or need". In this case, Hillary Clinton, the most corrupt politician in U.S. history, a decision impossible of reversal or even to hold in check once done.

If you are torn about the Republican voters' choice of nominee, but still unhappy about the notion of Hillary, America's nightmare mother-in-law, winning (and certain that the independent candidates are no better and, in any event, without a chance) here are some writers whose views may help you overcome your reluctance to cast the vote for Trump.

Excerpt below:

Ok since the media will not tell anyone about this I will at least tell my friends and make this public so y'all can share and tell yours as well because I think it needs to be said.

[snip]

Donald Trump visited Louisiana today. He brought with him a truck loaded with food, supplies, and toys that he personally passed out. He also donated money to a flood relief charity. He went and walked flooded houses in a community. He didn't ask for state police or military security, I imagine he may have had his personal security with him but hey he pays them so not my business. He didn't ask for any road to be closed to bring him in or an escort to his destination, matter of fact he didn't inform the government of his visit at all. He didn't care if the government knew he was coming, he just came and brought needing people needed supplies. And the news covered it about 15 seconds and then used it as a hit piece to plug Obama's visit that will happen. It was just wrong on many levels. No matter [i]f you agree with Trump political are not what he done today was honorable and good, and he did it without making a big deal of himself. I hope more people of his statu[r]e will do the same in the same way, without all the hype of announcing their visit with intent of a public photo op.

Yes, I too caught a glimpse of Franklin Graham in the media piece of Trump's visit to the flooded areas.

RT: Russia could use Incirlik airbase ‘if necessary' – Turkish PM
"Ankara wouldn't mind it if Russia used the Incirlik airbase for its anti-terror missions against Islamic State terrorists in Syria, Turkey's Prime Minister Binali Yildirim hinted on Saturday, but acknowledged that no such requests have been made.

"Turkey opened Incirlik airbase to fight Daesh [Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL] terrorists. It is being used by the US and Qatar. Other nations might also wish to use the airbase, which the Germans are also now using," Yildirim told reporters on Saturday, as quoted by Anadolu news.

"If necessary, the Incirlik base can be used," the PM said when asked if Moscow could share the airfield as well. At the same time, he firmly denied recent media reports claiming that Moscow has been pressuring Turkey to lease Incirlik to the Russian air force, saying "this information is not correct."

Amid unsubstantiated reports that Washington might be moving its nuclear arsenal out of Turkey and into Romania, which Bucharest has already denied, Izvestia Daily fueled the rumors by reporting that Russia might soon move into the Turkish base.

Given the recent rapprochement between Moscow and Ankara, the Russian publication cited upper house member Igor Morozov as saying that "it just remains to come to an agreement with Erdogan that we get the NATO base at Incirlik as [our] primary airbase." According to the MP, Incirlik would give Moscow a strategic advantage and provide for a swifter conclusion to Russia's anti-terrorist operation in Syria.

Afghanistan
Foggy Bottom leaves contractors in Afghanistan without escape plan
[CIRCA] Surrounded by increasing violence and instability, U.S. contractors left behind in Afghanistan are raising alarm about the potential for another Benghazi tragedy, saying the State Department isn't sharing with them a plan to evacuate if insurgents launch a debilitating attack.

The concerns are heightened by the fact that many of those civilians doing the security and nation-building work of the U.S. government hold sensitive security clearances, making them an attractive target for the enemy.

And the situation could become even more precarious after the U.S. military in Afghanistan draws down to just 8,400 troops by year's end.

"It's not just a political nightmare for somebody, it's people's lives at stake," said Kevin Ofchus, head of Georgia-based firm Host Nations Perspectives Southwest Asia (HNPSWA) that has security contracts in Afghanistan.

LDS Federal Judge seeks criminal contempt charges against Sheriff Joe
(CNN) Tough-talking Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio could soon be facing criminal charges himself.

Federal Judge G. Murray Snow has asked the US Attorney's Office to file criminal contempt charges against Arpaio and some of his subordinates over failure to follow the court's instructions in a racial profiling case.

In May, Snow found Arpaio and three members of his office to be in civil contempt because they allegedly violated court orders designed to keep the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office from racially profiling Latinos.

Continued failure to follow the directions of the court, along with false statements and attempts to obstruct further inquiry, justified the filing of criminal contempt charges now, Snow wrote Friday.

#1  Tom Tancredo has written in today's Breitbart blog:
"It is an open secret in Washington, D.C. that the Mormon church supports open borders and lax enforcement of immigration laws. Many Mormon politicians have been supporting amnesty and open borders for decades. When I was in Congress I had a confrontation with former Utah Senator Robert Bennett over his sponsorship of an amendment to exempt religious institutions from a Sanctuary City bill establishing penalties for harboring illegal aliens. It turned out he did it at the request of his church leaders. Mormon church support for John McCain in his Arizona Republican primary race is also due in large part to his open borders record and his challenger’s strong criticism of McCain’s hypocrisy on border security."

D. A. Henderson - Man who led effort to eradicate smallpox passes on.
[John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health] It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that Donald Ainslie Henderson, the eighth dean of our School, passed away last evening at Gilchrist Hospice Care. D. A. was a giant in public health who, prior to becoming dean, led the World Health Organization's successful 10-year effort to eradicate smallpox, one of the greatest public health achievements in history. Smallpox is the only human disease ever to have been eradicated.

#1  Just this once cut me a bit of slackery.

1 Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begat us.
2 The Lord hath wrought great glory by them through his great power from the beginning.
3 Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms, men renowned for their power, giving counsel by their understanding, and declaring prophecies:
4 Leaders of the people by their counsels, and by their knowledge of learning meet for the people, wise and eloquent are their instructions:
5 Such as found out musical tunes, and recited verses in writing:
6 Rich men furnished with ability, living peaceably in their habitations:
7 All these were honoured in their generations, and were the glory of their times.
8 There be of them, that have left a name behind them, that their praises might be reported.
9 And some there be, which have no memorial; who are perished, as though they had never been; and are become as though they had never been born; and their children after them.
10 But these were merciful men, whose righteousness hath not been forgotten.
11 With their seed shall continually remain a good inheritance, and their children are within the covenant.
12 Their seed standeth fast, and their children for their sakes.
13 Their seed shall remain for ever, and their glory shall not be blotted out.
14 Their bodies are buried in peace; but their name liveth for evermore.
15 The people will tell of their wisdom, and the congregation will shew forth their praise.
16 Enoch pleased the Lord, and was translated, being an example of repentance to all generations.
17 Noah was found perfect and righteous; in the time of wrath he was taken in exchange for the world; therefore was he left as a remnant unto the earth, when the flood came.
18 An everlasting covenant was made with him, that all flesh should perish no more by the flood.
19 Abraham was a great father of many people: in glory was there none like unto him;
20 Who kept the law of the most High, and was in covenant with him: he established the covenant in his flesh; and when he was proved, he was found faithful.
21 Therefore he assured him by an oath, that he would bless the nations in his seed, and that he would multiply him as the dust of the earth, and exalt his seed as the stars, and cause them to inherit from sea to sea, and from the river unto the utmost part of the land.
22 With Isaac did he establish likewise for Abraham his father's sake the blessing of all men, and the covenant, And made it rest upon the head of Jacob. He acknowledged him in his blessing, and gave him an heritage, and divided his portions; among the twelve tribes did he part them.

Leftard Academic Tells People Not to Have Children Because of Climate Change
[American Lookout] An old cliche for left wingers when it comes to raising taxes and government spending is "think of the children."

But what happens when the narrative gets flipped to "don't have children?" That's what one Climate Change alarmist is telling people who will listen.

NPR reports: Should We Be Having Kids In The Age Of Climate Change?

Standing before several dozen students in a college classroom, Travis Rieder tries to convince them not to have children. Or at least not too many.

He’s at James Madison University in southwest Virginia to talk about a "small-family ethic" -- to question the assumptions of a society that sees having children as good, throws parties for expecting parents, and in which parents then pressure their kids to "give them grandchildren."

Why question such assumptions? The prospect of climate catastrophe.

For years, people have lamented how bad things might get "for our grandchildren," but Rieder tells the students that future isn’t so far off anymore.

He asks how old they will be in 2036, and, if they are thinking of having kids, how old their kids will be.

"Dangerous climate change is going to be happening by then," he says. "Very, very soon."

Rieder wears a tweedy jacket and tennis shoes, and he limps because of a motorcycle accident. He’s a philosopher with the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and his arguments against having children are moral.

Americans and other rich nations produce the most carbon emissions per capita, he says. Yet people in the world’s poorest nations are most likely to suffer severe climate impacts, "and that seems unfair," he says.

Ahh yes... Fairness. The old fallback of all progressives.

Who takes these people seriously?

#3  Professor Rieder is behind the times. Leftists have been having small or no families for many years based partly on their own 'what if' projections (remember "The Population Bomb"), partly on the fact that they don't like kids, partly because of delaying marriage until the late 30s and other reasons.

Big families come from Mormons, Orthodox Jews, Amish, immigrant Muslims, Evangelicals and a few others.

Renowned Former Marine Officer: Recruiters Need To Stop Selecting Weak Women
[Daily Caller] In an op-ed for the military blog Task & Purpose, former Marine Lt. Col. Kate Germano blamed the problem of high female attrition in the service on recruiters bringing in weak women and refusing to provide real mentorship.

Germano was responding to a recent Associated Press article that discussed the Marine Corps’ efforts to meet its goals of 10 percent women in the force. Marine Commandant Gen. Robert Neller has given the service an order to recruit more women.

"I’ve told them that 10 percent is where we want to go and they’re working on it," Neller said. "Go recruit more women. Find them. They’re out there."

To accomplish that effort, the service is vastly trying to shift its advertising efforts to remove the idea the Marine Corps is a "good ol’ boys club," but for Germano, this change in advertising is only half of the game.

#1  ...LTC Germano - who found herself out of the Corps earlier than planned after serious questions were raised about her style of leadership, although she did seem to be getting results - really should be more familiar with recruiting standards and procedures. Those 'weak' women met or exceeded the minimum standards set by the USMC and DOD, whether she likes it or not. Don't blame that poor bastard in the recruiting office; blame the Corps and DOD.

Palestinian who gave medical aid to Jewish terror victims faces persecution

Rendering medical assistance to Jewish terror victims landed the man in hot water:

A Palestinian man who saved the children of a West Bank rabbi after a deadly terror attack that killed him has been fired from his job, according to the head of Har Hevron Regional Council.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Yochai Damari said that the man is now unemployed due to Palestinian opposition to his actions and should be assisted by Israel.

"I met with him and he asked me to help remove any obstacle preventing him from receiving a work permit," Damari wrote. Such a permit would allow the man to obtain employment inside Israel.

Planned Parenthood Seeks to Block Public Release of 'Baby Parts' Records
[Free Beacon] Researchers at a public university are trying to suppress documents relating to Planned Parenthood's fetal body part scandal in federal court, according to a suit.

Planned Parenthood supplies researchers at the University of Washington's Birth Defects Research Center with body parts obtained during abortions. Pro-life activists led by the Center for Medical Progress - David Daleiden filed records requests about these practices. A federal judge granted a temporary injunction on the information after receiving a request filed by several people associated with the lab to have information redacted from the publicly available documents.

Daleiden's attorney, Peter Breen, who is also general counsel for the non-profit Thomas More Society, said that such a move threatens government transparency.

"The people have a right to know how their government is run. The plaintiffs here work at a taxpayer-funded state university, and their work is subject to the same sunshine and open records laws as any other government employee," Breen said in a release.

The university has filed a brief with the court in support of the researchers, some of whom are not government employees. A university spokesman said that while it supports the Freedom of Information Act, it is also concerned with employee safety. He said that redacting names would not hinder the public's right to know.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
'Kim Jong-un' makes a sensational appearance at the Rio Olympics
North Korea is notorious for keeping a close eye on its athletes during international competition. Kim Jong-un has been spotted several times in the crowd in Rio, but not even North Korean athletes thought he would be this close to the action.

Or at least it appeared to be him.

For those that live under a rock don't know, Kim Jong-un is the isolated leader of the People's Republic of North Korea. "Kim Jong-un," however, is the life of the party.

The Glorious Leader may not have made it to the Olympic games, but his impersonator definitely did. The Australian-Hongkonger known as "Howard" made his presence felt at the track and field events, where cameras and vigilant viewers have seen him.
Howard had better spend more time at the kitchen table if he's going to keep up with Pudgy's superhuman eating habits.
The Kim impersonator has been taken photos with fans and athletes alike as he makes his way through the Olympic festivities. He also gave a less than glorious gesture to the crowd during last night's track action.

Costumed patrons aren't a new thing at the Olympics.

People come dressed in wild outfits to show their support for their favorite country. However, not a lot of people come dressed as their favorite Supreme Commander.

North Korea may be benefitting from the extra motivation.

The country has secured seven medals in Rio: two gold, three silver and two bronze. That medal haul is highest it has had since it secured nine medals at Barcelona in 1992.

There is no confirmation whether Kim's father, Kim Jong-il, was in attendance to inspire that performance in 1992. Knowing Kim Jong-il's athletic achievements, it wouldn't be surprising if he was there.
He stood in for Usain Bolt, I hear.

Hackers targeted Trump campaign, Republican Party groups
Update from this article a week ago.
[AlAhram] Hackers targeted the computer systems of presidential candidate Donald Trump and Republican Party organizations as well as Democratic Party networks, sources familiar with investigations into the attacks said.

At least one Trump staff member's email account was infected with malware in 2015 and sent malicious emails to colleagues, according to one insider for the Republican candidate's campaign and an outside security expert. It was unclear whether or not the hackers actually gained access to campaign computers.

In the past month, U.S. security officials have said that starting last year, hackers infiltrated computers of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton and her party's congressional fundraising committee.

U.S. officials said they have concluded that Russia or its proxies were responsible, leading to calls by some Democrats and cyber security officials for the Obama administration to blame Russia publicly. Kremlin officials have dismissed the allegations as absurd, but there is anxiety in Washington over the possibility that a foreign power might be using hacked information to meddle in the Nov. 8 U.S. election.

The Trump campaign has hired security firm CrowdStrike, which also is assisting the Democratic National Committee, according to one person briefed on the matter. The company declined to comment.

A different outside security firm was hired to examine software the Trump and Clinton campaigns use to manage mailings, electronic outreach and other campaign efforts, another person who was briefed on the issue said.

A spokeswoman for Trump's campaign declined to comment. A spokesman for the Republican National Committee could not immediately be reached for comment.

The tools and techniques used to hack Republican targets resemble those employed in attacks on Democratic Party organizations, including the DNC and Clinton's campaign organization, two sources said. That has led U.S. officials to reach a preliminary assessment that Russia's military and civilian intelligence agencies or their proxies have targeted both political parties.

Attempts to hack into Republican political organizations over an extended period were reported in intelligence bulletins circulated by U.S. agencies, four sources said. They did not disclose the identities of the organizations.

Two U.S. security officials said the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have offered assistance to both political parties in identifying possible intrusions and upgrading their defenses against what one of the officials called "constantly evolving threats."

Europe
'There's not much that's German here anymore'
[DW] Bad Godesberg was once home to diplomats working in Bonn. Today, Moslem women in veils and Arab shops and restaurants are abounding. Many long-term residents no longer feel at home, reports Daniel Heinrich.

Sabine Galuschka knows everyone here. The 57-year-old owns a small flower shop in the middle of Bad Godesberg's main street. Her discussions with customers often go beyond the business of buying flowers. The current debate about banning burqas is a particularly hot topic. "I just don't like that there are so many veiled women walking around. That's not the way we dress when we go out," she said. "I would just like to know who's hiding beneath the veil."

Not all women in Bad Godesberg wear the veil. As I walk through the town center on a warm summer's day, the contrast is stark. On one side of the street there are maidens of tender years in hot pants and tops; on the other side, there are women in headscarves. There are also women swathed in black niqabs, a type of full-body veil with just a narrow opening for the eyes. But there's not a burqa in sight.

Fear of the 'right-wing' label

One passerby carrying shopping bags stops briefly to share her opinion. "You know what? I don't have a bad word to say about the Arab women here. Most of them are really nice to me, they often greet me. I just find it a shame that they don't show their faces." She reflects for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "This whole thing with the veils is part of their culture. They're not doing it to bother us." But then she adds that people who move to another country ought to adapt to the customs of that country. "Otherwise, they should go somewhere else." She declines to give her name or have her photo taken.

The debates about the refugee crisis and the burqa ban are touchy subjects in Bad Godesberg. Many people prefer not to comment, or say they're afraid of being labeled right-wing holy warriors. Many rumors routinely make the rounds in this town just south of Bonn. There's talk, for example, of front men who buy apartments for Arab businessmen, or of Arab families willing to pay rent at a monthly rate of 20 euros per square meter - far above the average.

"There's a kind of double standard at work here. Everyone likes Arab money, just not the people who are offering it," says one middle-aged man. He refuses to give his name, nor does he want his interview to be recorded.

Attempts to speak with Arab business owners go nowhere. The most common response is that people here "don't want any trouble." It's even harder to talk to any of the veiled women or their companions. Most put their hands in front of their faces and hurry away as soon as they see my microphone.

'Nothing but shisha bars'

Back in Sabine Galuschka's flower shop, I meet with one customer who is happy to talk. Simone Lavan, 50, is out walking her dog, and doesn't want to be photographed. She says a burqa ban is unnecessary as it only scratches the surface. The real problems are elsewhere. "Every day, I experience the kind of stereotypes Arab men have about women. You just have to walk into any of the Arab cafes around here. They stare at any women who so much as walk by." She says the looks don't scare her. "But it makes me sad that women are treated so badly in their own country."

Lavan adds that the transformation taking place in Bad Godesberg is a much bigger issue for her than the current political debates. She mentions the recent closing of "Aennchen," one of the last typically German restaurants left in Bad Godesberg. "Now you've got shisha bars springing up everywhere, with that sweet smell in the air," she says. "There's not much that's German here anymore, or even Italian. And you see Arabic script everywhere."

Residents here tend to lean toward generalizations when talking about the growing Arab influence in their town. And yet, on my journey home, I take a quick peek into a local branch of a large German supermarket chain. And it's true: In addition to German and English, the signs are also written in Arabic.

So get used to wearing a bag on your head. And always remember, Allah loves you.

The Grand Turk
Billboards in Istanbul airport warn travellers to Sweden of high risk of rape
[ALMASDARNEWS] A pro-government Turkish newspaper placed an advert in Istanbul’s main airport warning travellers visiting Sweden they could be raped.
They're all pro-government in Turkey nowadays. The alternative is to be shut down, confiscated, and the staff picked up for determination of Gulenist connections... after which they'll be arrested, tried, convicted, their personal property confiscated by the state, and all their friends and relations examined as well.
Gunes newspaper placed the warning on two billboards in Ataturk Airport’s International Terminal. "Travel Warning! Did you know that Sweden has the highest rape rate worldwide?" read one billboard.
Oddly enough, the billboard doesn't mention exactly who is doing the raping...or why.
Sweden has the highest rape rates per capita in Europe, but not in the world.
"We're the regional Number 1!"
It comes after a news ticker at Vienna airport carried the headline, "The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
allows sex with children under the age of 15", following a controversial ruling by Turkey’s supreme court that sex with minors under 15 should no longer be classified as child abuse.

Sweden’s foreign minister Margot Wallström criticised the decision, calling on Turkey to defend children’s rights.

In response, Ankara summoned both Austria and Sweden’s ambassadors. Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said the claims highlighted the "racism, anti-Islamic and anti-Turkish (attitude) in Europe".

After Turkey’s Constitutional Court released a statement saying: "Sexual abuse actions against children will not be decriminalised and will not remain unpunished, and the legislative body will be provided the opportunity to make a new regulation within the scope set out in the grounds."

The statement went on to say that current laws criminalising sex with children would remain in place until January, when they would be replaced with new legislation. However,
the man who has no enemies isn't anybody and has never done anything...
the court did not state whether these new laws would legalise sex with children.

Bangladesh
RAB takes charge of female JMB members case
[Dhaka Tribune] Rapid Action Battalion has taken the charge of investigating the case filed against the four female JMB members detained on August 15

On August 16 a case was filed with the Mirpur cop shoppe and they were taken under four day police remand. ASP Sajedul Karim of RAB 4 told the Dhaka Tribune the Home Ministry had approved a request from the elite force to take over the case early yesterday. The case was handed over to RAB in the afternoon.

The four women are ‐ Istisna Akhter Oishee, 23, an intern of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and head of the female unit of the banned outfit, Aklima Rahman Moni, 23, Israt Jahan Moushumi alias Mou, 22, and Khadiza Parveen Meghla, 23. The last three are fourth year pharmacy department students of Manarat International University.

On Thursday Manarat University expelled these three students.

RAB has been expressing its desire to investigate the case from the beginning. Concerned sources said RAB had also participated in the interrogation of the four women at the cop shoppe.

After taking them under remand, police started working on identifying their associates. The case was handed over to the RAB 4 later, said Inspector (investigation) Sazzadur Rahman.

Asked if the four female JMB members would be taken under fresh remand, he said they would take them under remand if the court allows.

RAB ASP Shamsul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune they were interrogating the female members of JMB to get more information about their associates.

"On the first day of interrogation we received very little information," ASP Shamsul said.

After completing the remand they would be able to report about the progress of the case, he added.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
a RAB source said they were suspecting that the ten names they had obtained from the

four might be women from educated backgrounds and were tech-savvy.

RAB in the case statement had named ten other women ‐ Safia alias Sanjida alias Jhinuk, Maimuna alias Mahmuda alias Laila,

Tasnuba alias Tahira, Saila alias Shahida, Saleha alias Putul, Dinat Jahan alias Naomi alias Bani, Tanzila alias Munni, Alia alias Tinni alias Teetli, Monira Jahan alias Mili and Sabiha alias Mitu, as members of JMB.

Peshmerga forces don’t get orders from Iraq army: KRG
[WORLDBULLETIN.NET] The Kurdish peshmerga forces don’t receive orders from the Iraqi army, the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) has said.

In a statement released late Friday, the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs said the Kurdish forces only receive orders from the General Command in Erbil in northern Iraq.

"The central government has neither born the responsibility of training the peshmerga forces nor provided them with weapons," the statement said.

The statement, however, said that the peshmerga forces "have been part of Iraq’s defense system".

The statement was released in response to statements by front man for the U.S. State Department, Mark Toner, in which he called for putting the peshmerga forces under the command of the Iraqi army.

The Kurdish ministry said the peshmerga forces don’t have ambitions to capture any new areas in Iraq, reiterating that the Kurdish forces were ready to cooperate with the Iraqi army to fight ISIS group.

Earlier this month, Iraqi Defense Minister Khaled al-Obeidi said there was a great cooperation between the peshmerga forces and Iraqi troops with a view to recapturing the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
from the ISIS group.

Iraqi forces are currently preparing to launch a major offensive to retake Mosul, the country’s second largest city, which was overran by the myrmidon group in 2014.

Backed by U.S.-led Arclight airstrikes, Iraqi forces have managed to retake most of the territory seized by ISIS since 2014. The terrorist group, however, still controls several parts in the country.

Terror Networks
British builder fighting ISIS says untrained western volunteers are winning the war against 'cowardly' radicals who prefer to terrorise women and children
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] A British soldier who who sold his house to go abroad and fight ISIS has revealed how 'sometimes farcical' volunteers are still beating 'cowardly' gunnies on the frontline.

Tim Locks had no military training but left his life in London to go to Kurdistan and fight after being sickened by the brutal massacres of ISIS in Sinjar, Kurdistan, in 2014.

More than 5,000 people were killed when ISIS launched the brutal attack on a Kurdish area of Northern Iraq, and Mr Locks decided to take action.

Within six months, Mr Locks, a former public schoolboy, had sold his house and chosen to abandon his construction company to go and fight ISIS in Kurdistan.

'Selling your house seems like a big decision but I had made up my mind what I wanted to do and I knew that I might not need it because there was a good chance I wouldn't come back,' he told MailOnline.

Mr Locks had spoken to other westerners who wanted to do the same thing as he did and even gave someone he met £4,500 so he could meet him and they could go to the frontline together.

He booked a close protection course in Europe, which offered basic firearms training. 'It was firearms 101 but I had to do it in Europe because of the firearms laws in the UK,' he said.

He armed himself with body armour, medical supplies and food that he could take with him, then set off to meet his online friend Rob, unsure if he would arrive.

They got a taxi to meet resistance fighters in Dahuk, Kurdistan, where they helped him buy an AK-47 for £700 and a Glock handgun for £1,540 on arrival.

Westerners seen flocking to battle Islamic State while they still can

[IsraelTimes] As jihadis lose ground and morph into traditional terror group, frontline volunteers note uptick in Americans and others looking to join fight while there still is one.

Louis Park, a 26-year-old Texan Christian who returned to Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region for a second stint with local anti-IS forces in June, has embedded with the Dwekh Nawsha, an Assyrian Christian militia working with US-backed Kurdish peshmerga forces to protect the towns of Telskuf and nearby Baqufa, around 20 miles (30 kilometers) north of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"I’m getting inquiries from all around the world -- 60 or 70 since I’ve been back," he said in a phone interview from close to the Baqufa frontline.

According to a study released last week by the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue, of the 300 or so imported muscle it tracked via social media heading to fight the IS group, more than a third are Americans. The fighters are motivated by various factors, including wanting to make a difference or do something meaningful in their lives, and anger over a perceived inadequate international effort to counter the IS group’s barbaric acts.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Battle of the tanks as Islamist rebels launch counter-offensive in east Damascus
[ALMASDARNEWS] From morning until afternoon today, festivities raged in eastern Damascus as Jaish al-Islam
...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. In Sptember 2013 Saudi Arabia engineered Liwa al-Islam's merger with fifty other more or less Salafist groups as a counterweight to al-Nusra, which the Learned Elders of Islam considered was growing too powereful...
attempted to create some much needed breathing space.

Islamist forces attacked newly fortified government positions at Hawsh Nasri, a village in the East Ghouta which was captured by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) last week.

Jaish al-Islam did make some initial headway, seizing several positions inside Hawsh Nasri itself during the morning hours.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
a source embedded with the SAA’s Elite Republican Guards assured Al-Masdar News that all lost checkpoints had been recovered by government troops during the afternoon.

The source added that 11 holy warriors were killed with approximately a dozen more maimed; the casualties were exclusively inflicted by armored vehicles.

Nevertheless, a front man of Jaish al-Islam said rebel fighters had destroyed one T-72 tank along with a BMP during the festivities.

Neither side mentioned today’s SAA corpse count.

Hawsh Nasri represents a gateway into Douma, a major Islamist stronghold just east of Damascus which has been under Jaish al-Islam rule since 2012.

Around half the East Ghouta rebel pocket has evaporated over the past three years as government soldiers have gradually rolled back hard boy gains in the Syrian capital.

Hundreds of SAA tanks and thousands of Elite Republican Guards are tied up in Damascus, making it a major priority for the SAA’s Military High Command.

Afghanistan
Afghan Taliban capture strategic district in northern Kunduz province
[DAWN] The Afghan Taliban captured a strategic district in the northern province of Kunduz on Saturday, forcing troops to retreat to the quiet provincial capital which fell briefly to the murderous Moslems last year, officials said.

Fighting has sharply escalated in Afghanistan since the insurgency started spreading from its traditional strongholds in the south and east of the country to the once peaceful north.

The snuffies seized the district of Khanabad, which connects Kunduz to Takhar and other northern provinces, in the early morning, with heavy fighting ongoing in several other districts, the officials said.

"The Taliban attacked the district from different positions and we resisted for hours but we received no support. The district fell to the Taliban," said Hayatullah Amiri, the Khanabad chief.

-led coalition out of Afghanistan and bring in Sharia law.

The fall of Khanabad comes only five days after the Taliban captured a district in neighbouring Baghlan province, seizing a number of government forces' vehicles and ammunition.

The quiet provincial capital of Kunduz fell to the Taliban for the first time in September last year, one of the biggest victories for the Death Eater group since they were ousted from power by US and coalition forces in late 2001.

Afghan forces retake control of Khanabad district in Kunduz

The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) have recaptured the control of the key Khanabad district in northern Kunduz province.

According to the security sources, the control of the district was retaken following hours of festivities since this morning when the Talibs captured some key government compounds.

The sources further added that the Taliban gunnies were forced to retreat after the Afghan forces launched an operation to retake the district.

There are still no reports regarding the casualties of the Afghan forces and the Taliban gunnies as well as the local residents as a result of the festivities.

province of Afghanistan as the Talibs launched a coordinated attack to take control of the district.

The festivities in Hesarak on Saturday came as the group took control of the key Khanabad district in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan.

Local officials in Nangarhar claim around 40 Taliban bully boyz were killed and dozens of others were maimed during the festivities.

Provincial governor’s front man Ataullah Khogayani said the murderous Moslems were killed in the Arclight airstrikes and ground operations conduted by the Afghan forces.

The Talibs group in the meantime claim they have taken control of Hesarak district but the local officials deny the Taliban claims as baseless.

On the other officials in the Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan have said additional forces have been deployed in the area to repulse the Taliban attack.

Afghan forces capture Khanabad
Afghan security officials confirmed they had retaken control of Khanabad district late Saturday after it fell to the Taliban earlier in the day.

This comes after reports emerged Saturday that the insurgent group had also essentially closed off all three key roads leading into the provincial capital.

Khanabad fell to the Taliban early Saturday following heavy clashes with security forces overnight.

Members of the provincial council said the district had witnessed heavy clashes over the past few days.

On Saturday morning, dozens of Khanabad residents could be seen running from the district. Many were in vehicles while others were on foot. They were heading for Takhar.

In blocking major roads into Kunduz city – the Taliban effectively sealed off the capital.

Security forces have however been deployed across the city to thwart a possible invasion by the Taliban.

An emergency meeting to review the situation was reportedly held on Saturday evening between security officials.

Meanwhile, a number of security forces who retreated from the Khanabad area earlier in the day blasted government for not supplying them with enough weapons and food.

Soldiers fighting the Taliban in the district claimed Saturday that they have fought the Taliban for three days with light weapons and without food.

The Taliban managed to seize control of the district for a few hours on Saturday but battles also still continue to rage in Ali Abad district and on the outskirts of Kunduz city.

"All check points around us collapsed. We did not have sufficient weapons to fight and food to eat for four days. Finally our check posts collapsed and we evacuated the area and arrived in the center of Kunduz," said an Afghan National Police (ANP) officer Serajuddin.

"I want to call on Dr. Ashraf Ghani and Dr. Abdullah not to shed the blood of the soldiers more than this, I suggest they put aside their internal disputes and show mercy on the soldiers and the nation and address our problems," said Afghan National Army (ANA) officer Obaidullah.

Fighting between the Taliban and the security forces also continues in Toop Khana area near to the Kunduz airport while insurgents have also extended their offensives on parts of Ali Abad district.

"War is going on in Imam Sahib district and Dasht-e-Archi and Chardara, battles expanded in and around Khan Abad and Qala Zal," said Assadullah Sadat, a member of the Kunduz provincial council.

"It seems that last year's tragedy is going to happen again," said another member of the council Safiullah Amiri, referring to last year's fall of Kunduz city to the Taliban.

Residents in Kunduz province have also criticized the Afghan ministry of interior and ministry of not putting in place comprehensive security measures for the province.

"Taliban have captured Chahar Bandar area of Kunduz," said a resident of Kunduz.

"Sons of the people are being killed, there is devastation and government does not take action," said Shekib, a resident of Kunduz city.

However government has said that action is being taken.

"All security institutions are planning to attack the Taliban from four directions," said Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri.

"We will soon initiate clear operations in the localities to remove the opponents," said Assadullah Omarkhail, the governor of Kunduz province.

"We have established strong security belts around Kunduz city. Insurgents will never be able to infiltrate the city," said Masoom Hashemi, head of security of Kunduz police headquarters.

The development takes place just months after a report revealed that the number of Taliban fighters battling the security forces in Kunduz had increased radically.

Local authorities also said that the Taliban in the area have dozens of armored vehicles and heavy weapons.

Arabia
U.S. Cuts Military Advisers to Saudi-led Coalition in Yemen
[AnNahar] The U.S. military has slashed the number of intelligence advisers directly supporting the Saudi-led coalition's air war in Yemen, the US Navy said on Saturday, after concerns over civilian casualties.

The reassignment of personnel, around June, occurred because "there was not the same sort of requests coming in for assistance" from the Saudis, Fifth Fleet spokesman Lieutenant Ian McConnaughey told AFP from Bahrain.

Saudi Arabia has faced repeated criticism from rights groups over civilian casualties in its 17-month campaign against rebels in Yemen.

US officials have regularly urged their major Middle East ally to avoid harming non-combatants in Yemen.

But McConnaughey said the US reassignment of personnel does not affect their ability to support the Saudis and is a more efficient allocation of resources.

"That's the main reason behind it, and it's based on the amount of requests that we receive from the Saudis."

He said the United States now has "a limited number, less than five, that are working directly on the advisory cell that we have here" in Bahrain.

That number is down from about 45, in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, at its peak. The joint cell was established around the start of coalition operations in March last year, McConnaughey said.

The coalition has told AFP that it uses highly accurate laser and GPS-guided weapons -- many of them supplied by the US -- and that it verifies targets many times in order to avoid civilian casualties.

Yet allegations of strikes on civilian facilities have continued.

McConnaughey said the US cooperation with Saudi Arabia mostly involves "imagery that allows them to better assess the situation on the ground, and then advice and assistance."

He said intelligence is still being provided to the Saudis.

"The only difference is it's based on the demand signal. We're not going to basically have a bunch of people available if there's no immediate request for them."

The spokesman for the coalition could not be immediately reached.

Around June, when the US reassigned its personnel, coalition air strikes had decreased during a formal ceasefire that accompanied UN-brokered peace talks between Yemen's warring parties. The suspension of those talks in early August, after they made no headway, led to an intensification of bombing and fighting.

McConnaughey said that "if the need arises" the team directly assigned to coalition cooperation could be augmented. He said the US advice is always in accordance with international law and the best way to avoid civilian casualties. But the Saudis are the ultimate decision-makers.

"The final decision on targets is up to them," McConnaughey said.

Ayyy-pee: Ex-SEAL to pay $6.6 million to settle case over book
The former Navy SEAL who wrote a book about his role in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden will pay the government more than $6.6 million for violating non-disclosure agreements and publishing without getting the document cleared by the Defense Department, according to federal court documents.
$6.6 million? What proportion is that of the author's royalty?
The book triggered a Justice Department probe, including claims it contained classified material. Bissonnette had signed non-disclosure agreements during his service as a SEAL, and he took part in a number of highly secret operations including the bin Laden raid.

Under the agreement, Bissonnette said he would acknowledge he made a mistake by failing to submit the book for pre-publication review. And in exchange for the payments, the U.S. government has dismissed other liability claims.
Silly SEAL. Trod on reserved turf.
Absolutely beyond the pale. These people are loathsome and disgusting.

#1  ...I think enough Rantburgers are familiar with The Way Things Work to understand that this wasn't about secrecy; it was about making an example of Bissonnette. And - understanding that some of my fellow 'Burgers here may disagree with me - although I think the Gummint went way overboard, the bottom line was that Bissonnette was in the wrong. He signed the NDA, and I have signed a few of them myself - there is no, "well, you can tell just a little" clause. You say nothing, ever, without clear and specific permission to do otherwise.
Had he gone to the Navy and said, "Look, I'm gonna write this, let's work together on it," it would have ultimately been approved and the SEALS would have had a chance to have one of their own tell the story of one of their greatest triumphs. Yes, he would have had to have it reviewed at every step, yes, he probably would have had to take some things out, but he would have ultimately written his book. Instead, he frankly decided he could get away with it, and that never works. Period. The end result is clear - he will be made an example, and that's the point.
Was what he did worth $6.7M USD (there's also 100K he has to come up with in 30 days on top of the primary 6.6M judgement)? Nope. But as far as Your Federal Gummint is concerned, the lesson being taught to anyone else who might have the same bright idea is priceless.

Turkish regime shifts stance on Assad’s future in Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Turkish Prime Minister, Binali Yidirum, stated on Saturday that Syrian President, Bashir al-Assad, can remain as the interim leader of Syria, while the country moves towards a transitional government.

Yidirum added that Assad cannot remain president of Syria after the transitional government is set in place.

This shift in Turkish policy comes just two weeks after Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
, met with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
, in St. Petersburg.

Previously, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
demanded Assad step down from the presidency immediately and even threatened military action against his government if he did not comply.
In other words, they'll give him a little longer to flee with whatever he can carry. Golly.
Next week, Erdogan is scheduled to travel to Tehran, where he will meet with the Iranian and Russian leaders in order to increase coordination efforts.

Australia Crafts Its Own Anti-Access, Area Denial Strategy
The Australian military is shaping a transformed military force, one built around new platforms but ones that operate in a joint manner in an extended battlespace. The goal is to extend the defense perimeter of Australia and create, in effect, their own version of an Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) strategy.

They also recognize a key reality of 21st century military evolution in terms of shaping an integrated information-based operating force. Interactive modernization of the force is built around decision-making superiority and that will come with an effective information dominant force.

That makes the Aussies a key partner to the US and other allies in discussing openly a path for force transformation along lines where cutting edge thinking is occurring in the US and allied forces. Put bluntly, they are driving a public discussion of transformation in a way we have not seen in the United States for a long time.

The goal was put clearly in an interview by Craig Heap, commander of the Surveillance and Response Group in the Royal Australian Air Force in an interview.

What caliber is this information?

shaping an integrated information-based operating force

Does "integrated information" give you the will to fight and win? Or does it give you more nuanced excuses for "leading from behind" and doing diddly-squat?

Civil war costs Yemen $14 billion in damage and economic losses
[ALMASDARNEWS] The cost from damage to infrastructure and economic losses in Yemen’s civil war is more than $14 billion so far, according to a confidential report seen by Rooters that highlights the effort needed to rebuild the country, where more than half the population is suffering from malnutrition.

"The conflict has so far resulted in damage costs (still partial and incomplete) of almost $7 billion and economic losses (in nominal terms) of over $7.3 billion in relation to production and service delivery," said the May 6 joint report by the World Bank, United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...

The 16-month civil war has killed more than 6,500 people, displaced more than 2.5 million and caused a humanitarian catastrophe in a country with a per capita gross domestic product the World Bank last estimated at only $1,097 in 2013.

The Preliminary Damage and Needs Assessment report is an internal working document that is not being publicly released.

'Not the school I deserved': Refugee students take stand in lawsuit against Lancaster schools
EASTON -- At 5 years of age, Khadidja Issa fled the heat and civil war of Sudan with her family. She spent the next decade of her life in a Chadian refugee camp before emigrating to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in September of 2015.

"We came to get a better education," she told a federal court here on Tuesday.

But a lawsuit filed against Lancaster's public school district by Issa and 5 fellow refugee students claims district officials there denied her that opportunity, systematically stalling and stymieing enrollment for older refugee students like them, or placing them into an inferior alternative school described by their attorneys as an educational "dead-end."
...
Qassim Hassan, a Somali refugee whose father was killed by militiamen in that country, said of the security procedures in place at Phoenix Academy: "It makes me hate the school and hate the system. It makes me feel bad."

Speaking through an interpreter, he said of his experience there: "I did not find the school that I deserved."

Foreign Legion force could be about to be UNLEASHED on ISIS
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] French special operations troops are already in action in Libya, Syria and Iraq after President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
declared war on the jihadist group but there are calls growing for the legion of imported muscle to be sent to tackle ISIS.

The feared fighting force has a long history of battling Islamist murderous Moslems, including al-Qaeda and Taliban holy warriors in Afghanistan.

In 2013 they embarked on a two-year campaign - code-named Operation Serval against Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...

Five years earlier they fought alongside European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
troops in Chad and before that in the Ivory Coast during the country’s civi war.

It is unclear what role if the Legion is planning to play in the current war against ISIS but pressure is mounting on the French government to allow the infantry or airborne units of the force to contribute to the war on terror.

Dr Jean-Marc Rickli, a researcher in European security at Kings College London, said French troops were already heavily involved in anti-ISIS operations in Libya, Syria and Iraq as well as the thousands of soldiers on the streets of French cities after a spate of terror attacks rocked the country.

Russian MP says China’s upgrading ties with Syria can form non-NATO anti-terror coalition
[ALMASDARNEWS] Chairman of the State Duma (lower house of parliament) Defense Committee, Admiral Vladimir Komoedov, has noted that the Chinese military’s desire to upgrade ties with Syria could be the first step towards forming a military and political coalition of non-NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
countries.

"The Chinese military in Syria is the first step towards putting together a serious military-political coalition dominated by countries that are not aligned with the aggressive NATO bloc.

The time has come to form such a coalition," the politician told journalists on Friday, commenting on a report about the Chinese Defense Ministry seeking to boost military cooperation with Syria. The report cited a statement made by Guan Youfei, Head of the Chinese Central Military Commission’s Office for International Military Cooperation, at a meeting with Syrian Defense Minister General Fahd Jassem al-Freij in Damascus.

Komoedov added that if Russia, China, India and Iran pooled efforts in the Middle East, the problem of liquidating the illegal Islamic state and the terrorism it produces would be resolved within a year.

"It’s not just the powerful military potential of these players but also serious political influence," the parliamentarian stressed.

According to Komoedov, Russia, China, India and Iran all have common interests in the region, as "peace and stability in the Middle East is needed" for economic and political stability throughout Europe and Asia. "That is why other countries could join the coalition that we are discussing. I am glad that at last there is an understanding on the issue at the highest international level," the admiral proclaimed.

Iraqi forces begin important offensive in Al-Ramadi
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd Al-Sha’abi) kicked off the second phase of their offensive to liberate the last two Islamic State bastions in east Al-Ramadi.

The military commander of the Al-Anbar operations told Sumariya TV on Friday that the Popular Mobilization Forces stormed the Albu Kanaan region, where they are currently involved in a fierce battle with the Islamic State terrorists.

Albu Kanaan and Kartan are the two remaining Islamic State bastions in the eastern countryside of Al-Ramadi that have not been liberated by the Iraqi Armed Forces.

As long as those two areas remain under Islamic State control, the imperative Jazirat Al-Khalidiyah region will not be full cleared of the terrorist group.

Soddy airstrikes pound Yemen border district

The Saudi-led Arab Coalition aircraft, meanwhile, launched airstrikes targeting Houthi militia positions in the Yemeni District of Harad near the kingdom’s border.

Security sources told Al Arabiya News Channel that coalition forces continued to target Houthis on Saturday near the northern governorate of Saada, killing four militants. Sources also confirmed the deaths of 64 Houthi members on the Yemeni border near the southeastern Saudi province of Jizan.

Earlier this month, the Arab coalition resumed its Operation Restoring Hope against the Houthis and their allies loyal to Saleh after UN-sponsored peace talks in Kuwait ended without an agreement.

The operation was also renewed after the Houthi militias started launching attacks on the Saudi borders, which Riyadh dubbed as a “red line”.

The Houthi militias and Saleh’s General People’s Congress hold most of Yemen’s northern half while forces loyal to exiled Hadi share control of the rest of the country along with local tribes.

The fighting during which more than 6,400 people have been killed - half of them civilians - has created a humanitarian crisis in one of the poorest countries in the Middle East.

Bianibazar on alert to capture militant Tamim
[Dhaka Tribune] Several law enforcement and intelligence agencies are on high alert in Sylhet to arrest most wanted Lion of Islam leader Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury who allegedly criminal masterminded Gulshan and Sholakia terror attacks

His village home at Borogram of Bianibazar in the district was visited by several agencies but they have learnt that Tamim, on who the police declared Tk20 lakh bounty, did not go there recently. His parents live in Canada.

According to Sherlocks, Tamim came to Bangladesh from Canada in 2013, taking special assignment to reorganise the distracted Lion of Islams. He then formed a wing of banned Lion of Islam outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

The houses of Tamim’s father Shafiqul Islam Chowdhury alias Shoa Mia and three uncles were found under lock and key during a visit Wednesday. The relatives said that they had no idea about Tamim’s whereabouts. When asked, the locals seemed reluctant about him.

Tamim’s grandfather Abdul Majid was a member of Peace Committee during the 1971 Liberation War. His father moved to Canada after the independence.

The village is within 300 metres of the Indian border.

Local Awami League leader Zakaria Ahmed demanded immediate arrest of Tamim. "We condemn his activities," he said, adding that Tamim’s uncle Nurul Emran is a joint secretary of the ward Awami League unit.

Dubag Union Chairman Abdus Salam said: "Tamim is not in Bianibazar. But we will hand him over to the police once he arrives here. The law enforcers are in touch with us."

Bianibazar police also confirmed that the New JMB coordinator was not there. "Police are on high alert about his activities since the beginning. He did not come to Sylhet recently," said OC Chandan Chakrabarty.

Tamim last visited the village in 1995. When his family came to Bangladesh again in 2001, they were staying in Sylhet city for three months but did not go to the village, Tamim’s cousins Faheem and Tajin said.

4 bullet-ridden bodies found in Balochistan
KALAT: Levies recovered four bullet-riddled bodies in Balochistan's Kalat district on Friday evening.

Levies sources said the bodies were found in the Nimargh area of Kalat district. All the victims had received bullet injuries.

The bodies were shifted to District Headquarters (DHQ) hospital in Kalat. Levies personnel reached the scene as an investigation into the incident went underway.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the killings.

In a separate incident, unknown miscreants blew up an eight-inch gas pipeline in Balochistan's Dera Bugti. Levies sources said gas supply from well number 7 was suspended following the incident.

"They planted an improvised explosive device near the gas pipelines, which went off with a large explosion," said Levies sources. Repair work to restore gas supply could not be immediately started due to the risk of landmines in the area.

"Repair work will be started once the area is cleared by security personnel."

Militants have conducted attacks against security forces and national installations in Balochistan, which has been plagued by an insurgency and growing sectarian killings for more than a decade.

Syrian Air Force hunts down Islamist militants across the country
[ALMASDARNEWS] A confidential military source has informed Al-Masdar News that a total of 46 jet sorties and 26 helicopter sorties were conducted in the past 24 hours, averaging an Arclight airstrike every 20 minutes.

The air raids were carried out across five governorates; namely Aleppo, Idlib, Homs, Hama and Deir Ezzor. The Arclight airstrikes were roughly split 50/50 between rebel-held areas and ISIS territory.

A convoy of armored vehicles were spotted and targeted by Syrian warplanes along the Saraqib-Aleppo road in Idlib province. The devastation was not immediately clear.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
the source confirmed to Al-Masdar News that 4 pickup trucks fitted with heavy machineguns were set alight by Arclight airstrikes in southern Aleppo, near the military colleges at the Sheikh Saeed district.

According to Syrian intelligence, all four pickup trucks belonged to Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, an Islamist group formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli sh-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Furthermore, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) targeted a number of ISIS controlled villages in eastern Aleppo, specifically at Deir Hafer, Hamimah and Rasm al-Kama. This region has otherwise been relatively calm since the SAA liberated Kuweiris Airbase in late 2015.

group, Abu Leith al-Tunisi, was killed during festivities with the Syrian Army in southern Aleppo.

The terror chief was killed while repelling the government troops at Al-Mahroukat Hilltop, located to the south of the strategic Ramouseh district. A number of jihadists from the same hardline group was also reported dead including Muhajer al-Kurdi, Abu Zakaaya al-Kurdi and Habib al-Kurdi.

The myrmidon Kurdish Sunni group was first established in Iraq in 2001 and fought the American-led forces following the 2003 Iraq invasion. With the outbreak of the Syrian war, the group established itself in the war-torn country and participated ‐ along with other jihadi factions ‐ in several battles against the Syrian Army.

of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) that are occupying eastern Syria.

This move by the Iraqi government came just hours after the Russian Air Force landed their first fighter jets at the Hamedan Airbase in Iran.

Access to Iraqi airspace is critical to the Russian Air Force because they will be conducting Arclight airstrikes against the Islamic State forces that are operating along the Iraqi-Syrian border.

Russia has already fired long-range missiles over Iraq; however, they have never used Iraqi airspace to attack the Islamic State hard boyz in Syria.

Afghanistan
Helmand Operation Continues Amid Ongoing Battles
Reporting from the volatile southern province of Helmand, TOLOnews reporter Karim Amini said Saturday that military operations against insurgents are moving forward slowly on the outskirts of the provincial capital Lashkargah.

He said operations were also still underway in a number of districts in the province including Nad Ali and Marjah.

A key area of concern has also been the Kandahar-Helmand highway which has been under siege by the Taliban for a few weeks. However security forces continue their operation to clear the route of insurgents in their bid to reopen the key artery to the public.

In the past three weeks heavy battles have been ongoing in Helmand between security forces and Taliban – with security forces making sure they hold the insurgents back from Lashkargah, the provincial capital.

As a result of the ongoing clashes, more than four thousand people have fled their homes and made their way to Lashkargah.

One displaced resident, Zaman, said: "I came from Nawa district and there was a battle. Our children are still there; no body from government has helped us. Half my family is here and the other half is stuck there and all my belongings were left behind. Now we are living here with nothing."

One elderly woman, who fled with her family to Lashkargah, said they are all living in one room without anything, not even a carpet.

"I escaped with only the clothes I was wearing," said Faizullah.

ISIS executes 2 in Hawija

(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad – Al-Hashed al-Sha’abi leader Jabbar Maamouri revealed on Saturday that ISIS executed two of its own leaders and detained 30 other members in Hawija district.

Maamouri, in a press statement, said, “ISIS executed two of its own leaders and transferred four others to Mosul, a day after the were arrested near Hawija, south-west of Kirkuk. They were linked to the Emir of ISIS in Kirkuk, who was executed yesterday. The Emir was arrested because in an audio recording he was heard of appealing to the ISIS fighters to withdraw and fall back from Hawija.”

“On the other hand, ISIS detained over 30 of its own men due to the chaos and internal confusion in the ranks of the organization. Rifts among the leaders have also surfaced and the morale of the fighters have also gone down in the past few weeks,” Maamouri further added in the statement.

Houthis kill 14 for desertion

[Al Arabiya] Iran-backed Houthi militias have retaliated against allied forces belonging to the ousted Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh for fleeing clashes with Saudi forces near the southwestern province of Najran, killing at least 15 fighters, Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

Houthis have long been allies with Saleh’s forces to combine efforts against the internationally recognized government of President Abed Rabu Mansour Hadi.

The clashes, which took place near the Saudi-Yemen border, led to the killing of nearly 70 Houthi militias by Saudi forces.

9 Bad Guys die in Tirah region airstrikes
LANDI KOTAL: Intermittent air strikes and a ground offensive carried out on Saturday in the Rajgal valley of the Tirah region as part of the ongoing military operation left nine suspected terrorists dead and six of their hideouts destroyed.

According to APP, four suspects were injured in the strikes in high mountains near the border with Afghanistan.

The action was codenamed ‘Khyber III military operation’ by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media affairs wing of Pakistan Army.

Paramilitary soldier dies in Jamrud gun attack

The ISPR in its initial press notes about the Rajgal offensive did not give it a name and codenamed it Khyber III only after Chief of the Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif visited the front positions on Friday.

The ISPR said that the destroyed hideouts included an ammunition depot, but its claim could not be verified independently as since 2012 the media have had no access to the region.

Earlier in the morning, a khasadar was shot dead in the Ghundi area of Jamrud.

Personnel of the Swat Scouts along with the Khasadar and Levies forces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa conducted a search operation in the area immediately after the incident and picked up four suspects.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack on Shakeel Khan, the khasadar. With fresh casualties, the number of terrorists killed reached 36 with 15 others wounded in the ongoing operation, adds APP.

According to the ISPR, the military offensive took place in the mountainous terrain of Babar Kachkol, Naray Nao and Tor Sapar areas.

Most of the terrorist-infested regions in Khyber Agency were cleared in two previous operations — codenamed Khyber I & II. The ISPR release said that Khyber III was launched on Tuesday which targeted the terrorists holed up in the area beyond the Tirah valley.

The military launched Khyber III to reinforce deployment of troops along the border with Afghanistan to effectively check movement of terrorists.

Minnesota Somalis see Trump as symbol of more hostile America
For many Somali-Americans in Minnesota, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s fundraising visit to the state on Friday is the culmination of a tough week, a reminder of recent hostilities against people like them. They believe Trump’s rhetoric on Muslims and immigrants is emboldening hate, and they worry the hostility will stay no matter what happens in the election.
If "Minnesota Somali" elders sat on their male children a little better they wouldn't have to worry about what Mr. Trump might say...
“Donald Trump to me represents a part of America that is anti-Islam, that is anti-immigrant, that is anti-black, that is getting stronger and has an even louder voice and has someone powerful like him representing that, and coming to the place where I live,” said Khadra Fiqi of Minneapolis.
So she's got the SJW progressive Hillary Democrat talking points down cold...
Fiqi is black, wears a hijab and is visibly Democratic Muslim. She said she regularly deals with hateful comments and sees Trump’s arrival in Minnesota as a symbol of a troubled America.

Trump has called for a ban on Muslims entering the country as a way to protect the country from terrorists. He’s also painted a dark picture of the Somali community in Minnesota, saying the state has become a “rich pool of potential recruiting targets for Islamic terror groups.”

#2  Regarding the publisher, little is known of who pulls the strings at the Shabelle news operation, whether in Somalia or the USA. As for the CAIR activity noted, it was founded in 1994 by a Palestinian, Nihad Awad, and an American Muslim, Cary Ibrahim Hooper, along with one Omar Ahmad. It serves as a Hamas ally and has employed blanket charges that American Muslims are the victims of wholesale repression and that U.S. foreign policy is dictated by extreme Zionists. Following 9/11, as self-appointed Muslim spokesmen they typically refused to blame Osama bin Laden for the horrific attacks on America, following the Wahhabi line that no compelling proof had been offered by U.S. authorities. It has been claimed by many that CAIR is a Muslim Brotherhood operation, something that the US DOJ has never denied.

If true, Trump's plan would stand in sharp contrast to his previous statements about immigrants during the campaign.

Brownshirts Crash Trump Fundraiser, Attack Motorcade, Assault Trump Supporters in Violent ‘Gauntlet’
[BREITBART] Leftist agitators viciously attacked attendees at a Donald Trump presidential campaign fundraiser in Minneapolis on Friday night.

Video shows dozens of anti-Trump activists shouting obscenities and throwing debris as they surround Donald Trump supporters attempting to exit the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Trump fundraiser attendees attempting to exit the building were forced through a gauntlet of punches, with one protester seen violently attacking an elderly man as another man and a woman caught the brunt of the brutal beating.

Some attendees attempting to leave the event were also spit on as they left the convention center, the Star Tribune reports.

Jaime DeLage of the St. Paul Pioneer Press captured video of Trump supporters being forced to run a "gauntlet" to get into the fundraiser.

DeLage also captured footage of protesters outside burning the American flag:

Reporter Emma Sapong with MPR News posted video of protesters attacking Trump’s motorcade:

The private fundraiser Friday night marked Trump’s first visit to the state as the Republican presidential nominee.

Tickets for the fundraiser ranged from $1,000 per person to $100,000 per couple. The event was reportedly closed to the press, and Trump didn’t grant the media his usual presser-style availability.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
former U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, who attended the dinner did say: "People want to live, mind their own business and have a good job, and I think that’s something Donald Trump understands."

"He’s a common-sense guy, not into political correctness," Bachmann added. "He has turned businesses around, and that’s what he wants to do with the country."

Michele Bachmann on ‘Deranged’ Brownshirts Targeting Donald Trump’s Supporters, Motorcade: ‘Rent-A-Thugs’ Were ‘Looking for a Beat-Down’

... sometimes described as The Heroine of Tuzla and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Hamilton Fish ...
, the Democratic nominee for president, former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told Breitbart News exclusively.

Bachmann, who ran for president herself in 2012 and was one of the top conservatives in the U.S. House of Representatives for years before her retirement after last Congress, is a Trump supporter and was at the Trump event in Minneapolis. Bachmann said the protesters were using profanity to verbally harass Trump supporters, spitting on them, and were so much a threat to the community that coppers advised people that they needed to leave through alternative exits.

Africa North
Fundamentalists Gain Ground in Algeria as War Memory Fades
The soft jihad of the law...
[AnNahar] Mosques are going up, women are covering up, and shops selling alcoholic beverages are shutting down in a changing Algeria where, slowly but surely, Moslem fundamentalists are gaining ground.

The North African country won its civil war with bully boyz who brought Algeria to its knees in the name of Islam during the 1990s. Yet authorities show little overt concern about the growing grip of Salafis, who apply a strict brand of the Moslem faith.

Algerians favoring the trend see it as a benediction, while critics worry that the rise of Salafism, a form of Islam that interprets the Koran literally, may seep deeper into social mores and diminish the chances for a modern Algeria that values freedom of choice.

More than a decade after putting down an insurgency by Islamist myrmidons, Algerian security forces still combat sporadic incursions by al-Qaeda's North African branch. The conflict started in 1991 after the army canceled elections that an Islamist party was poised to win. The violence left an estimated 200,000 dead and divided society.

But authorities are treading lightly in their dealings today with "quietist" Salafis, who eschew politics but are making their mark on this North African nation buffeted by high unemployment -- and a far higher lack of confidence in the powers-that-be.

"Thanks to God, Algerian society is returning to its source of identity," commented Said Bahmed, a philosophy professor at the University of Algiers. Bahmed, who is close to the moderate Islamist party Movement for a Peaceful Society, described the growing number of women in Islamic dress as a "benediction."

Algeria's North African neighbors also have been grappling with a new assertiveness from those seeking a greater role for Islam in society, and have folded Islamist parties into their power structures.

In Morocco, where a moderate Islamist party runs the government, women increasingly don veils, especially in working-class neighborhoods.

Tunisia's moderate Islamist Ennahda party headed the country's first government after the 2011 revolution and remains strong in parliament, but rebranded itself this year to separate religion from politics. Ennahda's influence did not stop deadly attacks on tourist targets last year claimed by the Islamic State

India-Pakistan
Is it time for Pakistan to move to a presidential system?
[Dhaka Tribune] Pakistain’s current political system does absolutely nothing to hold those at the top accountable

Pakistain is a parliamentary democracy modelled on the UK, its former colonial ruler, with a ceremonial head of state and an all-powerful parliament.

But this arrangement is not serving the country well at the moment.

Like in the UK, the institutional inertia of the parliamentary system ensures that power is retained by the political insiders of the major parties.

In some context, this is a good thing. For example, in the UK, this system has enabled a smooth transition of power after the Brexit vote from the former prime minister, David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
, to his successor, Theresa May.

At a time of great political upheaval, this system allowed for a swift change of leadership toward someone who is regarded as competent and "a safe pair of hands," someone who is generally trusted to be boring but effective, and someone who would not have otherwise been likely to win the leadership.

And so, the country can now focus its attention on the actual Brexit negotiations, which will determine its future for decades.

But the same institutional inertia which keeps power solidly confined to just top political operators is much less positive if those at the top of political parties, who control the government and most areas of the state, are chronically corrupt.

The parliamentary system has given Pakistain a good deal of political stability, after so many decades of on-again-off-again military takeovers.

But this stability has also come at the price of putting most of those at the top of the political class beyond effective accountability.

This system has made it more difficult for the military to remove the civilian government from power, but it has made it even more difficult for the people to challenge and hold to account the incumbent government.

’s parliament ratified a reconciliation deal reached with Israel last month, the country’s deputy prime minister indicated Saturday that he intended to travel to the Jewish state in the near future.

"The reconciliation agreement with Israel is good for Turkey and for the entire region," Mehmet Simsek said, according to the Ynet news website. "I expect to visit Israel during my next round of international visits."

The Turkish parliament voted to approve the pact early Saturday, just before it closed for a summer recess, ending a six-year rift and paving the way for the restoration of full diplomatic ties.

Israel on Saturday night praised the Turkish move, with the Prime Minister’s Office issuing an official statement expressing hopes for the swift implementation of the agreement.

"Israel welcomes the ratification of the agreement by the Turkish parliament, and anticipates the continued implementation [of the deal], including the [mutual] return of ambassadors," the statement said.

Relations between the former allies imploded in 2010 following an Israeli naval raid on the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish aid ship trying to breach Israel’s blockade of the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,-controlled Gazoo Strip. The raid left 10 Turks dead and several IDF soldiers maimed.

Under the terms of the reconciliation agreement, Israel will pay a "lump sum" of $20 million in compensation to the victims within 25 days.
So it -- whatever it is, though nobody seems to be calling it a peace treaty -- should last that long.
Individual Israeli nationals also would not be held criminally or financially liable for the incident.

Israel had already offered compensation and an apology over the raid several years ago, but with the agreement it also eased slightly its part in the blockade of the Hamas-ruled Gazoo Strip, transferring humanitarian aid from Ankara through Israel’s border crossings with the Strip.

The Israeli Cabinet has already approved the deal.
Hurriyet adds:
Israel will hand Turkey a "lump sum" within 25 working days of the agreement coming into force, the agency said, which families of the victims will receive in due course.
How much will it cost the government to administer that fund?

Six Irish football players arrested in separate incidents
[Chicago Tribune] Two weeks before Notre Dame opens its 2016 football season, the Irish face the possibility of being without several key pieces after six players were arrested in separate incidents Friday night and early Saturday.

Five players -- starting safety Max Redfield, linebacker Te'Von Coney, wide receiver Kevin Stepherson, running back Dexter Williams and cornerback Ashton White -- were charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana after a traffic stop Friday, according to the Indiana State Police. Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of a handgun without a license, police said.

A sixth player, cornerback Devin Butler, was arrested on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement and battery to a police officer, both felonies, after an incident early Saturday at a South Bend, Ind., bar, according to South Bend police.

According to court documents obtained by the South Bend Tribune, the state will have until Wednesday to decide whether to file formal charges against Butler, who is accused in the documents of tackling and punching a police officer.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly did not publicly address either incident Saturday and isn't scheduled to speak with the media until Thursday. The Irish last practiced Friday and aren't scheduled to do so again until Monday.

Paul Browne, the university's vice president for public affairs and communications, released the following statement:

"Any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university. The university will determine if additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged."

Terror attack in Britain THWARTED in 'final hours' after GCHQ spies hack phones and emails
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] A TERROR attack on British soil was foiled in "its final few hours" after spies hacked phone calls and emails, a new report has revealed.

The dramatic document found the plot was thwarted after a major operation by GCHQ according to the 192-page report by terror law watchdog David Anderson QC.

The report investigates how powers used by GCHQ to snoop on people’s emails, phones and internet use has saved lives.

Spies sifted through the emails and phone calls of more than 1,600 different targets in the wake of the Gay Paree terror attack last November in a bid to spot "further attack planning" across Europe.

This allowed GCHQ to "identify other bandidos Lions of Islam based in Syria and suspected of planning terrorist attacks against the West".

The monitoring also helped an SAS rescue mission to recover Western hostages held by the Taliban in Afghanistan by going through communication data for details of the group.

Speaking about the salvage mission, QC Anderson said: "This work enabled GCHQ to locate the group, monitor it and establish the group’s links with known terrorist networks.

"Within 72 hours of the kidnapping, the hostages had been located. Analysis of the content of the communications of the kidnappers, obtained through bulk interception, indicated that the hostages’ lives were in imminent danger.

"This information was passed swiftly to a COBRA meeting and the Prime Minister authorised a rescue attempt by UK military forces. The hostages were subsequently successfully rescued."

The report concluded by giving its support for cyber spying and mass surveillance of email and phone data.

Welcoming the outcome, Theresa May said: "These powers often provide the only means by which our agencies are able to protect the British public from the most serious threats that we face.

"It is vital that we retain them, while ensuring their use is subject to robust safeguards and world-leading oversight enshrined in the Bill."

Policewoman under investigation after 'being flashed at by female boss in boob job row'
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] Manchester: A POLICEWOMAN is being investigated after having an alleged row with her boss over who had the best honkers breasts.

The pair are said to have become embroiled in a "loud disagreement" over who had the "best boobs" while attending the Senior Women In Policing conference.

Greater Manchester Assistant Chief Constable Rebekah Sutcliffe initially faced suspension and an investigation in May after allegedly flashing Superintendent Sarah Jackson.
"Hah! Whaddya think of these udds?"
But now Supt Jackson will also face an investigation without suspension following the fall out at an event set up to enhance the ’profile and perception’ of female officers.
"I perceive the short one had the best hooters!"
A GMP front man said: "At the request of Greater Manchester Police, Durham Constabulary will be investigating a senior GMP officer following allegations of inappropriate behaviour.
"Flashin' me hangers is inappropriate?"
"We will not be providing any details about the nature of the incident or the personal life of the officer."
"She's very friendly. Just leave it at that!"
While it is unclear who started the bust up, one insider claimed ACC Sutcliffe had been "comparing" gazongas breasts with the superintendent.
Employment tip: Never compare your knockers with your superintendent.
But another source alleged there had been a "ding dong over allegations of false chests".
"Whaddya mean 'looks like they're stuffed with buttwipe?'"
It was claimed that ACC Sutcliffe had argued that Supt Jackson’s tata breast enhancement surgery was ’pandering’ to men.

At the time an anonymous user took to twitter to reveal ACC Sutcliffe had been suspended "because of bust-up (or rather bust out!) with Supt Sarah Jackson at #SWIP16 social event."
"'At's right. Showed the old nipscape and out she went!"
Unlike her inferior officer, ACC Sutcliffe was suspended on full pay ‐ with the senior officer earning £109,000 a year.
"Go home and arrange yer sweaters, Boobsie!"
It is not the first time ACC Sutcliffe has been at the wrong end of an investigation, with a police watchdog launching a probe on the policewoman in 2014 after she failed to reveal a relationship with a senior officer.
"Oh, take me, Alistair! But be gentle!"
The Independent Police Complaints Commission later cleared ACC Sutcliffe of the charge, but the force she helps lead later decided she could not chair disciplinary hearings in the future.

Syrian Army foils jihadist offensive in northern Hama
[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist rebels of Jund Al-Aqsa (Al-Qaeda franchise) launched an offensive on Saturday morning to capture the key village of Ma’an in Hama’s northern countryside.

Launching their attack from Morek, Jund Al-Aqsa attempted to repeatedly break-through the front-line positions of the Syrian Armed Forces north of Ma’an; however, they were unable to infiltrate their defenses.

Following a four hour battle, Jund Al-Aqsa was forced to withdraw their fighters from the Ma’an front, as Russian fighter jets swarmed the northern Hama countryside.

According to a field correspondent in northern Hama, the Russian Air Force struck the villages of Morek, Kafr Zita, and Al-Lataminah, killing a large number of jihadists in the process.

Currently, there are no festivities near the Ma’an front, despite the intensity of the Jund Al-Aqsa assault; however, the Russian Arclight airstrikes are still ongoing over northern Hama.

Civilians flee as deadly Hasaka battle rages on
[AlArabiya] Civilians fled a city in northeastern Syria where government warplanes bombed Kurdish-held areas for a second day on Friday, as the Syrian army accused Kurdish forces of igniting the conflict by trying to take over the area.

The fighting this week in Hasaka, which is divided into zones of Kurdish and Syrian government control, marks the most violent confrontation between the Kurdish YPG militia and Damascus in more than five years of civil war.

The YPG is at the heart of a US-led campaign against ISIS in Syria, and controls swathes of the north where Kurdish groups have set up their own government since the Syrian war began in 2011.

A Pentagon official said US-led coalition aircraft were sent near Hasaka on Thursday to protect coalition special operation ground forces in response to bombing by Syrian jets, and additional combat air patrols were being sent to the area.

The government air strikes on Hasaka mark the first time the Syrian military has deployed its warplanes against Kurdish groups during the war.

Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said the incident was not an intercept and the coalition aircraft reached the area by the time the Syrian government warplanes were leaving.

YPG spokesman Redur Xelil told Reuters that Kurdish authorities had evacuated thousands of civilians from their area of control. “Whoever can bear arms is fighting the regime and its gangs,” Xelil said. “Our situation is so far defensive but it will change all the while the regime escalates in this way.”

In its first comment on the situation, the Syrian army accused a YPG-affiliated security force known as the Asayish of igniting the violence through escalating “provocations” including the bombardment of army positions in Hasaka that had killed a number of soldiers and civilians.

In a statement, the military command said the Asayish were aiming to take control of Hasaka city, and the army had responded appropriately by firing at armed groups’ “sources of fire”.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the war using a network of activists, said civilians were using lulls in the fighting to flee the city. Xelil said dozens of civilians had been killed over the past two days.

The YPG and Syrian government have mostly avoided confrontation during the multi-sided war that has turned Syria into a patchwork of areas held by the state and an array of armed factions.

Assad, backed by Russia and Iran, has focused mostly on fighting Sunni Arab rebels who have been battling to oust him in western Syria with support from countries including Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United States. The Syrian and Russian air forces are routinely deployed in the war in western Syria.

The YPG, or People’s Protection Units, has meanwhile prioritized carving out and safeguarding predominantly Kurdish regions of northern Syria. The group has ties to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Turkey.

While the YPG controls most of the northeast, the Syrian government has maintained footholds in the cities of Hasaka and Qamishli at the border with Turkey. The YPG has controlled most of Hasaka city since last year.

It is the second major eruption of fighting between the YPG and Syrian government fighters this year. In April, they fought several days of lethal battles in Qamishli, north of Hasaka city and also mostly YPG-held.

The Observatory said Kurdish forces had gained ground in the southern part of Hasaka.

Rami Abdulrahman, Observatory director, said the fighting began this week after pro-government militiamen detained a number of Kurdish youths, a step that had followed advances by Kurdish security forces towards government-held areas.

LNA claims major advances in Gwarsha district and offers ceasefire to militants if they surrender
[Libya Herald] The Libyan National Army says they have captured the European Hospital and three of the main streets in Benghazi’s Gwarsha district, including Shara Al-Shajra. Speaking on TV today, Libyan National Army (LNA) front man Ahmed Mismari said the main issue now, however, was the amount of mines laid by the departing krazed killers.

Offering free passage to everyone in Gwarsha, Ganfouda, Sabri and Suq Al-Hout who is still there, providing the murderous Moslems handed themselves in, Mismari also said that the latter were using a new tactic to try and defend themselves. They were setting fire to buildings in Ganfouda and Gwarsha to create a smoke screen so that the air force could not target them.

The day has seen heavy fighting in all four battle zones, with continuous sorties by LNA aircraft. Earlier, the head of the LNA arrived in Benghazi from Marj to take control of what was said would be the final offensive in Ganfouda and Gwarsha against the so-called Islamic State

(IS) and its allies.

Beida-based prime minister Albdullah A-Thinni is also in Benghazi for the offensive. Yesterday he turned up to meet the demonstrators in Kish Square who were protesting against the Presidency Council and the Government of National Accord. He was accompanied by the new military governor of Benghazi, Colonel Ahmed Al-Araibi, other security officials and his interior and local government ministers.

In a further development, according to Mismari, a number of people who had been held prisoner by IS in Suq Al-Hout and Sabri had managed to escape in the chaos and make their way to LNA positions.

For its part, IS is once more claiming that French drones are being used in the LNA offensive. Again, it is not clear on what evidence it makes the claims and it is thought that it is doing so in a desperate attempt to rally support.

Security experts say southern insurgents behind Thai bombings
[Khaosod] A number of security analysts said the evidence now shows beyond a reasonable doubt that militants fighting for independence in the far South were behind the bombings in southern Thailand last week.

While officials continue to insist that the ethnic-religious conflict had nothing to do with the series of bomb attacks which hit on the Queen's birthday, these scholars point to methods and motives they say leaves the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), the most likely perpetrators.

Researcher Rungrawee Chalermsripinyorat said, "It's likely the southern insurgents. But of course they do not call themselves insurgents. They call themselves juwae, which is a Malay word that means fighters."

Speaking at the same panel, security analyst Anthony Davis suggested that other possible candidates, such as the Redshirts or a military faction can be ruled out, because the former could not plan such a large-scale attack under intense surveillance, and the timing of the attack – just after the junta's charter draft was endorsed by a landslide – ruled out the latter.

Davis, who works for IHS Jane's, said, "In my opinion, it's just common sense. It doesn't require expertise at all. All I did was simply to connect the dots."

Srisompob Jitpiromsri, director of Deep South Watch, said he is also convinced far South insurgents are to blame. He said, "It's clear quite clear. The evidence point that way."

The three experts went as far as naming the group most likely responsible: the BRN, which is often described as the most active and well-armed southern separatist cell.

The military in charge of the official investigation seems to disagree. On Thursday it announced the arrest of 15 Redshirt supporters, mostly in their 60s and 70s, and accused them of having ties with the bombers. The army backtracked on this claim a day later.

"How could a state's top law enforcement official be so dumb?"

The real answer in this case gets missed, though it must be said that the author did a great job on the article. The fact - ugly and inescapable - is that Ms Kane is, was, and will always be a Democrat politician first, a power seeker/holder second, and a lawyer sworn to uphold the law last. Reviewing this case leaves no way to escape the conclusion that she felt her first duties were to the Party and herself, not necessarily in that order depending on the situation.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran's American Treasurer
History may not repeat itself, but it sure paraphrases a lot.
Long before Iranian revolutionaries named America the “Great Satan” in 1979, another Iranian revolutionary government looked to America for help in its struggle to secure its independence. In 1911, the government of Persia – as outsiders then knew Iran – invited William Morgan Shuster, an American lawyer and civil servant, to become the country’s treasurer general. Shuster arrived at a pivotal moment in Iran’s history, just as a fragile new democracy was struggling to survive. Only five years earlier, Iranians had carried out a “constitutional revolution,” forcing the reigning monarch, Mozzafer ad-Din Shah, to accept a constitution and a parliament, or majles. Supporters of the new government counted on the majles to end the corruption of successive monarchs who had exploited Iran’s resources for personal gain, and allowed Russia and Britain to dominate the country’s economy.

But the constitutional movement had powerful enemies. In January 1907, Mozzafer ad-Din died, and his son Muhammad Ali, a friend of Russia, became shah. Russia opposed the constitutional movement and jealously guarded its influence in northern Iran. In 1908, after surviving an assassination attempt, Muhammad Ali’s Russian-backed forces besieged the majles, arresting and executing prominent constitutionalists. The following year, constitutional forces deposed Mohammad Ali and sent him into exile. But by then, Iran was almost bankrupt. Europeans and corrupt local elites conspired to drain the national purse, even as Russia sought to undermine the government. To secure control of Iran, the government needed to root out corruption and centralize its tax system. That was Shuster’s mission.

Shuster knew from the moment he arrived that Russia, the friend of Muhammad Ali Shah, was especially displeased with his presence. Russia had pulled its weight with “certain persuasive and notorious members of the Parliament” to try and keep him away, and had even complained to the US State Department. Russia, says Amanat, faced its own revolutionary situation in the Caucasus Mountains and resented its loss of influence in Azerbaijan to the constitutionalists. Even so, Russia claimed to respect Iran’s sovereignty and stopped short of publicly objecting to the employment of a US citizen by the Persian government. Britain reluctantly assented to Shuster’s project as well. Both countries expected him to visit their legations upon his arrival and sent constant messages to that effect.

But Shuster gave them the cold shoulder. He argued that, as an official of the Persian government, he was under no obligation to pay “first calls” to anyone. At the heart of the foreign embassies’ worries was Shuster’s “financial law,” which he was preparing to put before the majles. Once it passed, Shuster would control the disbursement of all government funds, and would have the power to examine all requests for payment, including those from foreign powers. As far as Shuster was concerned, most of the foreign diplomatic corps in Tehran, along with the coterie of foreign experts whose countries they represented, were driving Iran ever closer to bankruptcy.

When Iranians saw how Shuster behaved toward the other westerners, he later wrote with no little self-regard, they “rubbed their eyes a few times and then commenced to have a new sensation. ‘Inshallah, we have a faranghi [foreigner] among us who takes not his orders from the foreign legations. Let us help him.’”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the IS extremist group was the "likely perpetrator" of the bomb attack, the deadliest in 2016, in Gaziantep late Saturday that targeted a celebration attended by many Kurds.

The remains of a suicide vest were found at the scene, the chief prosecutor's office said in a statement on Sunday, broadcaster CNN-Turk reported.

Syrian rebels seal off lines north of Manbij
[ARA News] ALEPPO – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Manbij Military Council finished an operation on Saturday to secure defense lines, after the liberation of Syria’s border city of Manbij from ISIS militants last week.

“The efforts of the SDF forces and MMC in securing the defence lines north of the Sajur river was finished, to prevent infiltration attempts by ISIS militants,” the council said, adding that the SDF withdrew from the area handing its position to the local MMC fighters.

“We announce that the battle for the northern countryside of Manbij achieved its results, and the battle for this frontline is over,” the council said.

However, the council said, they will ‘continue to liberate the southern countryside of Manbij.’

At least 59 ISIS militants were killed in renewed clashes with the SDF forces before the the frontlines near Manbij were secured on Saturday.

Handing over Liberated City to Locals

The Manbij Military Council (MMC) on Friday said that the campaign to liberate the countryside of Manbij is ongoing, while the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) handed over all their military points to the council.

The statement comes after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in a statement said that they expect the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YGP) –a leading member of the SDF– to withdraw from Manbij.

The Council said that many villages in the countryside of Manbij were liberated with the help of the SDF, while the SDF reinforced its defensive lines in the north frontlines from the countryside to the Euphrates river.

“We as the MMC declare to the public opinion that the SDF after they took out Daesh [ISIS] from Manbij and their heroic support to us, they have handed all military points in the city to the Manbij Military Council,” the council said.

“We in the MMC thank the SDF for all their efforts and sacrifice to serve our people in Manbij and all of Syria,” the council said.

“As we understood the plan with our partners that the YPG would indeed go to the eastern side of the Euphrates River when the battle was over. The battle’s not over yet. They’ve still got work that they’re doing in their clearing,” Colonel Christopher Garver, the US-led coalition spokesperson said on 16 August.

“They are now clearing through areas of the city through which Daesh retreated, looking for small pockets of Daesh fighters. Their stated aim is to make the city safe for civilians to return,” he said.

“This clearance is slow, difficult and dangerous because Daesh left behind a significant number of IEDs as they retreated, as we have seen them do many times when they retreat,” he added.

“This work will take time. Outside the city, the SDF are reinforcing their positions in the immediate vicinity of the city to protect against Daesh local counterattacks,” Garver said.

American journalism is collapsing before our eyes
Michael Goodwin

Donald Trump may or may not fix his campaign, and Hillary Clinton may or may not become the first female president. But something else happening before our eyes is almost as important: the complete collapse of American journalism as we know it.

The frenzy to bury Trump is not limited to the Clinton campaign and the Obama White House. They are working hand-in-hand with what was considered the cream of the nation’s news organizations.

The shameful display of naked partisanship by the elite media is unlike anything seen in modern America.

The largest broadcast networks — CBS, NBC and ABC — and major newspapers like The New York Times and Washington Post have jettisoned all pretense of fair play. Their fierce determination to keep Trump out of the Oval Office has no precedent.

Indeed, no foreign enemy, no terror group, no native criminal gang, suffers the daily beating that Trump does. The mad mullahs of Iran, who call America the Great Satan and vow to wipe Israel off the map, are treated gently by comparison.

By torching its remaining credibility in service of Clinton, the mainstream media’s reputations will likely never recover, nor will the standards. No future producer, editor, reporter or anchor can be expected to meet a test of fairness when that standard has been trashed in such willful and blatant fashion.

Liberal bias in journalism is often baked into the cake. The traditional ethos of comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable leads to demands that government solve every problem. Favoring big government, then, becomes routine among most journalists, especially young ones.

I know because I was one of them. I started at the Times while the Vietnam War and civil-rights movement raged, and was full of certainty about right and wrong.

My editors were, too, though in a different way. Our boss of bosses, the legendary Abe Rosenthal, knew his reporters leaned left, so he leaned right to “keep the paper straight.”

That meant the Times, except for the opinion pages, was scrubbed free of reporters’ political views, an edict that was enforced by giving the opinion and news operations separate editors. The church-and-state structure was one reason the Times was considered the flagship of journalism.

Those days are gone. The Times now is so out of the closet as a Clinton shill that it is giving itself permission to violate any semblance of evenhandedness in its news pages as well as its opinion pages.

A recent article by its media reporter, Jim Rutenberg, whom I know and like, began this way: “If you’re a working journalist and you believe that Donald J. Trump is a demagogue playing to the nation’s worst racist and nationalistic tendencies, that he cozies up to anti-American dictators and that he would be dangerous with control of the United States nuclear codes, how the heck are you supposed to cover him?”

Whoa, Nellie. The clear assumption is that many reporters see Trump that way, and it is noteworthy that no similar question is raised about Clinton, whose scandals are deserving only of “scrutiny.” Rutenberg approvingly cites a leftist journalist who calls one candidate “normal” and the other “abnormal.”

Clinton is hardly “normal” to the 68 percent of Americans who find her dishonest and untrustworthy, though apparently not a single one of those people writes for the Times. Statistically, that makes the Times “abnormal.”

Also, you don’t need to be a detective to hear echoes in that first paragraph of Clinton speeches and ads, including those featured prominently on the Times’ Web site. In effect, the paper has seamlessly adopted Clinton’s view as its own, then tries to justify its coverage.

It’s an impossible task, and Rutenberg fails because he must. Any reporter who agrees with Clinton about Trump has no business covering either candidate.

It’s pure bias, which the Times fancies itself an expert in detecting in others, but is blissfully tolerant of its own. And with the top political editor quoted in the story as approving the one-sided coverage as necessary and deserving, the prejudice is now official policy.

It’s a historic mistake and a complete break with the paper’s own traditions. Instead of dropping its standards, the Times should bend over backwards to enforce them, even while acknowledging that Trump is a rare breed. That’s the whole point of standards — they are designed to guide decisions not just in easy cases, but in all cases, to preserve trust.

The Times, of course, is not alone in becoming unhinged over Trump, but that’s also the point. It used to be unique because of its adherence to fairness.

Now its only standard is a double standard, one that it proudly confesses. Shame would be more appropriate.

#2  It's interesting that they splash all this ink on a guy they say has Absolutely No Chance of winning. I think part of it is that Trump gives them an excuse to avoid covering more ticklish issues, such as Champ's retirement-in-place, Ukraine, the South China Sea, Aleppo, etc.

Another part of it is that Champ has weaponized the executive order. They can't allow Trump to have that weapon. Which is a problem of their own creation.

And if Trump somehow wins, there will be a re-discovery of the Constitution by mugs who have been talking up a storm about how the Constitution is very old and extra-Constitutional actions are really OK. If Trump's in, we'll see full page-spreads about separation of powers, the bill of rights, the Gladstone quote about the Constitution being the most wonderful document ever, etc.

#4  The Times, of course, is not alone in becoming unhinged over Trump, but that’s also the point. It used to be unique because of its adherence to fairness.

When was this?

Also, while the press is collapsing, that's not the same thing as saying its influence is fading; even many on the right fall into the "we must maintain 'respectability' as defined by the MSM" trap.

And Facebook and Twitter are certainly picking up the gatekeeper slack.

Don't get cocky.

#5  I have had a great travel year, which has led me to spending week long stints in Tokyo, Dubai and Bangkok...Every English newspaper I picked up without fail included 2-3 articles negative to Trump and usually one article soft pedaling the Beast. The disparagement, IMHO, is actually a global effort.

Taliban condemn serial killings of Afghan clerics in Pakistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Talibs group condemned the murder of a number of the Afghan nationals in Pakistain as the group claims that the slain individuals were religious holy mans.

Taliban group front man Zabiullah Mujahid said at least three religious holy mans were assassinated in the past few days in different parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
province of Pakistain.

The slain individuals have been identified as Mawlavi Hazrat Sahib, Mawlavi Mohammad Hanafi, and Qari Syed Murad.

Calling the serial killing of the individuals as ’cowardly’, Mujahid said the slain individuals were refugees and called on Pak authorities to ensure the safety of the religious holy mans in the country.

No group has so far grabbed credit behind the serial killing of the religious holy mans in Pakistain and this is not the first time individuals with specific links to Taliban group have been assassinated in Pakistain.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Army prepares for massive Latakia offensive
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Armed Forces are preparing for another massive offensive in the northeastern part of the Latakia Governorate after successfully capturing the key town of Kinsibba earlier this month.

Led by the Desert Hawks Brigade and Syrian Marines, the Syrian Armed Forces will be targeting the imperative village of Kabbani, which overlooks the Al-Ghaab Plains from its western flank.

Kabbani has long been a target for the Syrian Armed Forces; however, it is heavily fortified by the Jaish Al-Fateh (Army of Conquest) jihadists, due to its proximity to another important village: Al-Sirmaniyah

Both Kabbani and Al-Sirmaniyah are located along the path to the jihadist stronghold of Jisr Al-Shughour; this city has been under the control of Jaish Al-Fateh since May 2015.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
WAPO editorial board tosses FBI Director Comey under the bus
[WAPO] THE DIRECTOR of the FBI, James B. Comey, did the right thing in announcing the results of the bureau's investigation of Hillary Clinton's email in early July. Realizing that the case was hyper-sensitive in the middle of a presidential campaign, Mr. Comey spoke up when ordinarily he would have simply forwarded his recommendation to prosecutors.
"Spoke up" in an election year did he? "Right Thing" was it? I thought justice was supposed to be blind.
He said the investigation determined that she was "extremely careless" in using a home-brew server while secretary of state, but that Ms. Clinton's actions did not warrant prosecution. It was important for the apolitical FBI director to say one way or the other whether there was criminal behavior so voters could make up their own minds.
That would be...formerly 'apolitical' FBI director.
But now Mr. Comey has taken a misstep. The FBI has provided to Congress portions of the investigative files from the year-long probe. Although it is not known precisely which portions, some of the materials include interviews conducted by the FBI. On Capitol Hill, the FBI has deposited the material in a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF, a room with restricted access.
Responding affirmatively to a Congressional request is a.... 'misstep?'
According to the Associated Press, the documents were transmitted to Congress with written warnings not to leak them. "These materials are nonpublic and contain classified and other sensitive material," FBI Acting Assistant Director Jason Herring wrote. "For that reason, these materials may not be further disseminated or disclosed, in part or in full, without obtaining the FBI's concurrence." Access to the documents is restricted to members of the judiciary, intelligence and government affairs committees.
The above caveat applies to ANY classified document. The doctrine of 'Need to Know' also applies.
Republicans in Congress are unlikely to heed the warnings. Are these members of the GOP, who have enthusiastically exploited the Benghazi and email stories for partisan advantage, whose convention delegates chanted "lock her up," really going to read the FBI files and stay mum? The temptation here for mischief -- partial leaks -- is enormous.
Is it just the Pubs in Congress who cannot be trusted? Thank you WAPO editorial board for this enlightening revelation. 'Mischievous Republicans'... quite rich I'd say.
It is extremely rare for the FBI to turn over to Congress internal case files from a criminal investigation that did not lead to a prosecution. In some cases in the past -- counterintelligence probes, for example -- the FBI has orally briefed Congress or, in the case of nominations, brought the raw interview notes to senators to read but not keep.
'Rare' yes, possibly, but the elected Congress of the American people requested to see these documents.
In this case, it seems a bad precedent to put the Clinton investigative materials before Congress. Will lawmakers demand more such sensitive documents in the future? If informants know their cooperation with the FBI might eventually be shared with members of Congress, will it have a chilling effect?
'Chilling effect'....Chilling to law breakers and criminals possibly.
At this point, the best course of action, and the most transparent, would be to put the documents through a suitable declassification process and then release them for all to see. But it shouldn't have come to that.
Correct, 'it shouldn't have come to that.' The documents SHOULD have been readily available through the normal archiving process as dictated BY LAW !

Sources said that a large number of Afghan nationals, celebrating the 97th anniversary of their country’s independence day, gathered near the Friendship Gate after marching through the streets of the Spin Boldak town across the border. They carried placards and banners inscribed with anti-Pakistain slogans.

Shouting slogans against Pakistain, the Afghan demonstrators started pelting the Friendship Gate with stones, smashing windowpanes of the building.
