Home Front: Culture Wars
Since 9-11, Fear Took us in the Wrong Direction
[DallasNews] Fifteen years ago, American self-confidence shattered amid the death and debris of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, a field in Pennsylvania and four hijacked aircraft.

The ripple effect has been felt ever since.

Before these terrible terrorist attacks, we believed history was on our side. Perhaps rightly so - the forces of democracy and capitalism had torn down the walls of communist tyranny, and the world was poised for an era of "perpetual peace" enforced by unchallenged U.S. power. In fact, foreign policy was barely discussed during the 2000 presidential election. The world was going our way.
Slick and Hilly had just departed the White House, taking all they could carry.
Then Sept.11, 2001, happened. It was a shock because it was not supposed to happen.

Nineteen young men from the Middle East, carrying only box cutters, killed almost 3,000 people. They caused more than $3 trillion in damage, shutting down the financial and political capitals of the United States. The mightiest and wealthiest nation was exposed as a vulnerable collection of soft targets. Overnight, the symbols of American freedom and prosperity - office buildings, tourist destinations, airports, parks and even sports arenas - became sites of potential danger.
So how is it that none of these soft targets were hit for the next ten years?
We have lived in fear ever since that terrible day. The irony is that the fear, much more than the terrorists, has done enormous damage to our country.
Oh, there has been damage, all right!
Our efforts to protect ourselves have increased our suffering and left us less safe. Our policies designed to boost our economy have increased inequality and diminished investments in critical public needs. Most ironic, our fight against hateful terrorists has made us a more hate-filled society.
Or the Democrats did it, depending on your deplorable point of view.
We see evidence of it today. Donald Trump's rhetoric against Muslims, Mexicans, immigrants and women is an extension of similar words and attitudes expressed with ever more frequency since the United States began its "War on Terror." In the years that followed 9/11, President George W. Bush spoke of a "crusade." Sarah Palin and other tea party activists encouraged Americans to arm themselves and stand their ground against suspected intruders in their communities, most of whom had darker skin. Some followers of this rhetoric still believe that the first African-American president is really a secret Muslim, which is their way of saying he is not a true American. Trump has only added more gasoline to this brewing hatred.
Hatred of being stepped on and ignored for fifty years? Disgust it more like it.
Making the hate deeper and more difficult to control are our military failures in the Middle East. Since March 2003, we have spent more than $2 trillion in Iraq on war and reconstruction. More than 4,000 Americans have died in that country, and at least 150,000 Iraqi civilians have lost their lives. Yet, more than a decade later, the situation in Iraq and the wider region is worse and more threatening. The Islamic State group, which emerged as a reaction to the war and American occupation, now controls large parts of Iraq and Syria. It uses this territory to plan attacks on American and European targets with greater zeal and effectiveness than ever exhibited by the regime the U.S. overthrew in Iraq.
Yet, somehow, this is all due to our fear, not the policy decisions of our chief executive.
Out of fear, we fought a long and costly war in Iraq that has made us less safe, less influential and less wealthy. Many Americans are angry about this, and for good reason, but they are directing much of their anger at Muslims rather than trying to bring positive change.
Solyndra - that made us more wealthy!
A similar story applies to the management of our economy. Fearing a loss in consumer confidence after the Sept. 11 attacks, President Bush famously told Americans to "go shopping." In a matter of months, an inherited budget surplus turned into a deficit, with much of the money going to warfare, homeland security projects, tax cuts and other efforts to stimulate the economy. This was followed by reductions in government regulations on lending and business practices, many justified by the fear that restrictive laws would limit the country's ability to respond to new threats and competition. The 2008 recession triggered yet another set of larger spending projects to bail out bankers and businessmen who were allegedly "too big to fail."
What was out national debt when the war ended and the hated Bush departed? Less than $20 trillion?
Fearful spending always makes for bad investment choices. Look at what the record budget deficits after Sept. 11, 2001, bought us: rising inequality, stagnant wages and crumbling public institutions. New spending went to consumers and investors, not the builders of schools, bridges, parks or even sidewalks. Only a few decades ago, American infrastructure was the envy of the world. Now our telecommunications, electric grid and public transportation are just above Third World standards.
But California is investing in high-speed rail. And Obama invested billions in shovel-ready projects. They helped rebuilt the infrastructure. Didn't they?
Where did all the money go? It followed the fear, not the country's needs. Spending on prisons, police and surveillance increased rapidly, just as budgets for education and infrastructure have fallen. Both Republicans and Democrats support transfer payments that protect these things, but neither has taken a strong stand to protect investments in our future crop of talented citizens - many of whom are, incidentally, dark-skinned and female.
Gosh durn it, I feel bad for being a white male!
The generation of Americans who lived through the Great Depression and the Second World War followed Franklin Roosevelt's prescient warning that "we have nothing to fear but fear itself." They built a society of hope and opportunity that we still benefit from today.

But since Sept. 11, 2001, our society has gone in the opposite direction. We have allowed fear to dominate our policymaking, our public rhetoric and even our local behavior. In this sense, the terrorists have won. The reactions of American leaders have done more to harm our society and diminish our future prospects than the crimes conducted abroad. Our wounds are almost entirely self-inflicted.
Tell that to the folks in San Bernardino and Orlando.
But here is the good news: We still have time to reverse course. The history of the past 15 years can awaken us to the perils of politics based on fear and hate. What we need is more of a willingness to see beyond immediate and exaggerated threats, with a renewed focus on hopes and possibilities. In the aftermath of a flawed, yet successful Summer Olympics, our leaders have a chance to re-introduce our country to the world and articulate a vision for increased cooperation so we can better manage climate change, nuclear proliferation and international trade. We also need a national economic policy that promises more opportunities for disadvantaged citizens through targeted investments, regulations and assistance.
You said change course, not re-elect Hobama.
Our leaders must talk more ambitiously about what we are for and less about what we are against. And most important, we must, as Americans, work toward rebuilding a civic culture that values conversation and compromise, discouraging hate, fear and violence. That is where the real courage resides - in the willingness to dream again, despite the scary shadows on the wall.
Like Make America Great Again? Is that what you're proposing? It was kind of tough to follow there, for a while!

#1  ...Am feeling a little down today, looking back at the one moment that really had a chance to bring it together and then realizing it was in part caused by idiot policies and then wasted by two administrations.
And then, remembering the one thing - the only thing that would have ended this once and for all - is the one thing we never could have done: nuclear warheads on Kabul, Qum, Baghdad.
And a promise that the next time we lose three thousand, you will lose thirty million.

Oversight report goes behind scenes of OPM hack
[Federal Times] WASHINGTON -- It was time to purge the hacker from the U.S. government's computers.

After secretly monitoring the hacker's online movements for months, officials worried he was getting too close to critical information, so they devised a plan, called the "Big Bang," to expel him.

Trouble was, with all their attention focused in that case, they missed the other hacker entirely.
Um. Guys?
A congressional report provides previously undisclosed details and a behind-the-scenes chronology of one of the worst-ever cyberattacks on the United States. It lays out missed opportunities before the break-in at the Office of Personnel Management exposed security clearances, background checks and fingerprint records.

“Trump the savior”? – Regrettably, that is true
[Jpost] Why it is true and why regrettably?

It is true since America now needs a savior indeed to save it from the political and social conversion she is undertaking ‐ the conversion from the founding principles of the free-market economy and small government to a huge all-intrusive government and heavily regulated economy.

It is regrettable since America was not supposed to be in the state of such conversion ‐ our founding Judeo-Christian principles had to prevent even a possibility of such country’s transformation.

What happened? The transformational conversion had begun then when we the people allowed the government to become a much-much better employment opportunity than that in the private sector.

#1  “To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it.”
Many years ago, a friend pointed out to me that what a person says about others, usually tells you more about the speaker than about those spoken about.
I have found myself, that I lack a power than many people claim to have: I have no way to reach into someone else’s brain and determine motives for their behavior or their statements. This is particularly true about people whom I have never met, and have never even heard from.

To assign motives to people before even meeting them or listening to them is to prejudge them. That is, it is to judge them before having any grounds to do so. Since the syllable ‘pre-‘signifies ‘before’, judging people in this way is the exact meaning of the phrase: ‘prejudging them’. The act of prejudging others is usually called prejudice.
Thus the speaker of the comment above has exhibited prejudice against supporters of Trump, They support him, or half of them do, she claims, not because they find Mrs. Clinton untrustworthy, nor because they object to her plans to grow government power, nor for her support of racist movements and violent protestors, nor in reaction to attacks on free speech by her supporters, nor for fear of the quality of her appointments as president, nor in reaction to the disastrous consequences of her term as secretary of state, nor for her apparent greed, nor for her apparent arrogance in acting as if laws are only for common folk and do not apply to her, nor because of her apparent frail health which may affect her brain, but because they are racist sexist homophobic xenophobic Islamaphobic, you name it.
We should have a name for this type of prejudice. Perhaps Americaphobia would describe it best.
I wonder, is it possible that half the supporters of Mrs. Clinton in this race are Americaphobic? I very much doubt that, but she has given us clear evidence that she is.
I cannot know whether she actually is Americaphobic, but it may well be.

#5  I fear the ratcheting effect, Trump can probably set things on track again for a short while, stave off financial doom, realign the political parties a bit if he does things right, but the hard left will never come together with the rest of the country.

Since the far left controls the schools and thus can perpetuate their numbers through brainwashing I'm not sure what can be done to fix things long term.

New Class War
h/t Instapundit
[AmericanConservative] Shock gave way to relief this summer as America’s political establishment--rattled by Donald Trump’s success in winning the Republican nomination--reassured itself of his inevitable defeat come November. For a moment Trump seemed to have created a new style of politics, one that threatened to mobilize working-class voters against the establishment in both parties. But in the weeks following the Democratic National Convention, as Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers remained comfortably ahead of Trump’s, pundits discounted the risk of class war.

...Since the Cold War ended, U.S. politics has seen a series of insurgent candidacies. Pat Buchanan prefigured Trump in the Republican contests of 1992 and 1996. Ralph Nader challenged the Clinton wing of the Democratic Party from the outside in 2000. Ron Paul vexed establishment Republicans John McCain and Mitt Romney in 2008 and 2012. And this year, Trump was not the only candidate to confound his party’s elite: Bernie Sanders harried Hillary Clinton right up to the Democratic convention.

...The insurgents clearly do not represent a single class: they appeal to eclectic interests and groups. The foe they have all faced down, however--the bipartisan establishment--does resemble a class in its striking unity of outlook and interest. So what is this class, effectively the ruling class of the country?

Some critics on the right have identified it with the "managerial" class described by James Burnham in his 1941 book The Managerial Revolution. But it bears a stronger resemblance to what what others have called "the New Class." In fact, the interests of this New Class of college-educated "verbalists" are antithetical to those of the industrial managers that Burnham described. Understanding the relationship between these two often conflated concepts provides insight into politics today, which can be seen as a clash between managerial and New Class elites.
They are the Mandarinate --- where formal education (whose mainstay is education in conformism - the other-thinkers [and thinkers in general] are weeded out during the said education process) is the only qualification
...The New Class plays a priestly role in its alliance with finance, absolving Wall Street for the sin of making money in exchange for plenty of that money to keep the New Class in power. In command of foreign policy, the New Class gets to pursue humanitarian ideological projects--to experiment on the world. It gets to evangelize by the sword. And with trade policy, it gets to suppress its class rival, the managerial elite, at home. Through trade pacts and mass immigration the financial elite, meanwhile, gets to maximize its returns without regard for borders or citizenship. The erosion of other nations’ sovereignty that accompanies American hegemony helps toward that end too--though our wars are more ideological than interest-driven.
Regardless of ideology, the results are indistinguishable from pure Nihilism. Possibly a subconscious effort to destroy potential threats: power threats like Russia or intellectual threats like Israel.

#1  The alliance between finance and the New Class accounts for the disposition of power in America today. The New Class has also enlisted another invaluable ally: the managerial classes of East Asia. Trade with China—the modern managerial state par excellence—helps keep American industry weak relative to finance and the service economy’s verbalist-dominated sectors. America’s class war, like many others, is not in the end a contest between up and down. It’s a fight between rival elites: in this case, between the declining managerial elite and the triumphant (for now) New Class and financial elites.

The above para is proof that the author is on to something.

#2  —the modern managerial state par excellence—

Really? Following Strategy Page and the immense level of corruption in the economy and state, the lack of proper accounting and tracking to know what is working, what is fraud, and what is just buried by corruption, who knows what the real story is. Remember - "Chicago is the city that works" turns out to be just the shadows on the wall.

Being white, and a minority, in Georgia
[Boston Globe] NORCROSS, Ga. -- One of the clearest signs of how times have changed in this little Southern town is literally a sign. It’s the outline of a faded red, oblong Dairy Queen sign that towers over Buford Highway just a few miles from the city line.

It used to direct residents to a fast food franchise, a beacon of Americana, where a hamburger cost 79 cents. The building is gone now. Only the sign remains, and at its base is a Hispanic man with a machete, slicing open coconuts piled in the back of his trailer.

His English is shaky. His coconuts cost $4.

A generation ago, this Atlanta suburb was 95 percent white and rural with one little African-American neighborhood that was known as "colored town.’’ But after a tidal wave of Hispanic and Asian immigrants who were attracted to Norcross by cheap housing and proximity to a booming job market, white people now make up less than 20 percent of the population in Norcross and surrounding neighborhoods. It’s a shift so rapid that many of the longtime residents feel utterly disconnected from the place where they raised their children.

"It’s not that much anger, but you don’t feel comfortable knowing that all this is around you," said Billy Weathers, 79, who has lived in the area for his whole life and doesn’t speak a lick of Spanish.

Billionaire Trump Supporter Dan Peña Goes Off on another Profanity-Laced rant for Trump
[Gateway] Billionaire Trump Supporter Dan Peña Goes Off on Profanity-Laced EPIC RANT for Trump

Dan Peña is a Hispanic American billionaire and high-performance business coach, born in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dan is also an outspoken Donald Trump supporter.

Dan Peña recently spoke with London Real about the US presidential race. Peña says Donald Trump will "rock the planet" as president.

"He will rock, not only the United States of America, he will rock the world... Respect gets respect. Instead of all this political horsesh*t. If Donald Trump becomes president he is going to rock the planet... If you're in a foxhole, who do you want in a foxhole with you, Brian? You want some mealy-mouth expletive, politically correct assh*le? Or you want someone who is going to rip their head off and expletive down their neck?"

Dan is obviously a very passionate speaker.

'ISIS-inspired' Australian man charged with terrorism
[BBC] Police in Australia have charged a 22-year-old man with committing a terrorist act and attempted murder in southwest Sydney.

They say he was inspired by the Islamic State (IS) group.
Officers say the attacker repeatedly stabbed a 59-year-old man in a suburban park and then tried to stab a policeman.

A large knife has been seized from the accused, who will appear in court later on Sunday.

The victim, who was reportedly walking his dog in the park, suffered injuries to his body and hands, and remains in hospital in a serious condition.

'New face of terrorism'
Although the authorities say they believe the attacker was inspired by IS, they do not think he has close ties to any extremist organisation.

"This is the new face of terrorism. This is the new face of what we deal with," New South Wales state police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said.

The NYPD Has Become A Counter-Terrorism Powerhouse Since 9/11
[Daily Caller] The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 changed the world, the United States, and forced the New York Police Department (NYPD) to become a leader in the global war on terrorism.

When the Twin Towers fell, New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was wrapping up his two terms as mayor of The Big Apple. America’s greatest city came under new management in January 2002 when billionaire businessman Michael Bloomberg took over after his electoral victory in November 2001.

The challenges faced by Bloomberg as a newcomer to New York City politics were daunting as New Yorkers were trying to return to normalcy in the wake of the attacks. To accomplish what needed to be done for the safety of all New Yorkers, Bloomberg asked Vietnam War veteran Raymond W. Kelly to join his administration as police commissioner of the city of New York.

Kelly was no stranger to the NYPD, having served the city for decades as an officer and eventually rising to become police commissioner from 1992 to 1994 under Mayor David Dinkins. The challenges faced by his city were too important for Kelly to say no to his mayor, asking him to serve once again.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Exposed: FBI Director James Comey's Clinton Foundation Connection
[Breitbart] WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A review of FBI Director James Comey’s professional history and relationships shows that the Obama cabinet leader -- now under fire for his handling of the investigation of Hillary Clinton -- is deeply entrenched in the big-money cronyism culture of Washington, D.C. His personal and professional relationships -- all undisclosed as he announced the Bureau would not prosecute Clinton -- reinforce bipartisan concerns that he may have politicized the criminal probe.

These concerns focus on millions of dollars that Comey accepted from a Clinton Foundation defense contractor, Comey’s former membership on a Clinton Foundation corporate partner’s board, and his surprising financial relationship with his brother Peter Comey, who works at the law firm that does the Clinton Foundation’s taxes.

Lockheed Martin
When President Obama nominated Comey to become FBI director in 2013, Comey promised the United States Senate that he would recuse himself on all cases involving former employers.

But Comey earned $6 million in one year alone from Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin became a Clinton Foundation donor that very year.

Comey served as deputy attorney general under John Ashcroft for two years of the Bush administration. When he left the Bush administration, he went directly to Lockheed Martin and became vice president, acting as a general counsel.

How much money did James Comey make from Lockheed Martin in his last year with the company, which he left in 2010? More than $6 million in compensation.

Lockheed Martin is a Clinton Foundation donor. The company admitted to becoming a Clinton Global Initiative member in 2010.

According to records, Lockheed Martin is also a member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt, which paid Bill Clinton $250,000 to deliver a speech in 2010.

In 2010, Lockheed Martin won 17 approvals for private contracts from the Hillary Clinton State Department.

HSBC Holdings
In 2013, Comey became a board member, a director, and a Financial System Vulnerabilities Committee member of the London bank HSBC Holdings.

"Mr. Comey's appointment will be for an initial three-year term which, subject to re-election by shareholders, will expire at the conclusion of the 2016 Annual General Meeting," according to HSBC company records.

HSBC Holdings and its various philanthropic branches routinely partner with the Clinton Foundation. For instance, HSBC Holdings has partnered with Deutsche Bank through the Clinton Foundation to "retrofit 1,500 to 2,500 housing units, primarily in the low- to moderate-income sector" in "New York City."

"Retrofitting" refers to a Green initiative to conserve energy in commercial housing units. Clinton Foundation records show that the Foundation projected "$1 billion in financing" for this Green initiative to conserve people’s energy in low-income housing units.

Who Is Peter Comey?
When our source called the Chinatown offices of D.C. law firm DLA Piper and asked for "Peter Comey," a receptionist immediately put him through to Comey’s direct line. But Peter Comey is not featured on the DLA Piper website.

Peter Comey serves as "Senior Director of Real Estate Operations for the Americas" for DLA Piper. James Comey was not questioned about his relationship with Peter Comey in his confirmation hearing.

DLA Piper is the firm that performed the independent audit of the Clinton Foundation in November during Clinton-World’s first big push to put the email scandal behind them. DLA Piper's employees taken as a whole represent a major Hillary Clinton 2016 campaign donation bloc and Clinton Foundation donation base.

DLA Piper ranks #5 on Hillary Clinton’s all-time career Top Contributors list, just ahead of Goldman Sachs.

And here is another thing: Peter Comey has a mortgage on his house that is owned by his brother James Comey, the FBI director.

Peter Comey’s financial records, obtained by Breitbart News, show that he bought a $950,000 house in Vienna, Virginia, in June 2008. He needed a $712,500 mortgage from First Savings Mortgage Corporation.

But on January 31, 2011, James Comey and his wife stepped in to become Private Party lenders. They granted a mortgage on the house for $711,000. Financial records suggest that Peter Comey took out two such mortgages from his brother that day.

This financial relationship between the Comey brothers began prior to James Comey's nomination to become director of the FBI.

DLA Piper did not answer Breitbart News’ question as to whether James Comey and Peter Comey spoke at any point about this mortgage or anything else during the Clinton email investigation.

Peter Comey Re-Designed the FBI Building
FBI Director James Comey grew up in the New Jersey suburbs with his brother Peter. Both Comeys were briefly taken captive in 1977 by the "Ramsey rapist," but the boys managed to escape through a window in their home, and neither boy was harmed.

James Comey became a prosecutor who worked on the Gambino crime family case. He went on to the Bush administration, a handful of private sector jobs, and then the Obama administration in 2013.

Peter Comey, meanwhile, went into construction.

After getting an MBA in real estate and urban development from George Washington University in 1998, Peter Comey became an executive at a company that re-designed George Washington University between 2004 and 2007 while his brother was in town working for the Bush administration.

In January 2009, at the beginning of the Obama administration, Peter Comey became "a real estate and construction consultant" for Procon Consulting.

Procon Consulting's client list includes "FBI Headquarters Washington, DC."

Donald Trump: Migrants Could Be ‘All Time Great Trojan Horse'
[Breitbart] Washington, D.C. -- Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump declared at the Value Voters Summit on Friday that the migrant crisis from the Middle East and North Africa could be the "all-time great Trojan Horse."

Speaking to a crowd of mostly Christian, Republican activists at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, he rattled through the top issues of the day, looking more comfortable delivering prepared remarks.

"President Obama," he said, "has allowed Syrian refugees to pour into our country at unbelievable rates. And Hillary Clinton wants to allow 550 percent more. But it’s almost impossible to get a Christian in from Syria."

"They take others but they don’t take Christians. Very rare, very rare," he added, "So I said that we need to take safe zones, we want to take care of people but we absolutely cannot allow this potential, tremendous threat to continue and we have to stop this."

"This is going to be potentially a catastrophe for our country. It’s from within, it could be the all-time great Trojan Horse."

Obamacare Pressures CA Univ to Fire U.S. Professionals, Hire Foreign H-1B Workers
[Breitbart] Janet Napolitano, the chancellor of the state-wide University of California, is dumping American information-technology professionals to hire cheaper H-1B contract workers from India.

She already has a lot of experience in the H-1B white-collar outsourcing program, after having been in charge of its implementation while working as the federal secretary of Homeland Security for President Barack Obama.

The University of California is both the top ranked public university system in the world with 10 campuses, with a combined student body of 238,700 students, but it is also a huge employer, with 19,700 faculty members and 135,900 staff members.

As the most liberal large American university system, the faculty and staff currently are the top contributors to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential candidate committee. The UC was also Barack Obama’s largest contributor in both 2008 and 2012.

Despite all of UC’s social justice credentials, its San Francisco campus just announced it will dump 17 percent of its IT staff by February 2017. Those cuts will eliminate 67 permanent UC employee positions -- complete with great pensions -- as well as 20 American contract workers.

The campus is facing "difficult circumstances," partly because of Obamacare, said Joe Bengfort, the Chief Information Officer for the UCSF campus. Obamacare has increased the volume of patients while limiting hospital reimbursement to around 55 cents on the dollar. Obamacare also mandates electronic medical records, so IT operating expenses have doubled from 3 to 6 percent of total hospital expenses amid more spending on IT security and analytics.

The fired American professionals will be expected to train foreign H-1Bs, under a 5-year, $50 million outsourcing deal with India’s HCL Corp.

Turkey Suspends over 10,000 Teachers for 'Kurdish Militant Links'
Nobody stopped the anti-Gulen purge of Sultan Erdogan I "the much beloved", so he is expanding the effort. In the end, if he gets his way, only his true believers will remain free to inherit the future, with no competition from Untermeschen.
[AnNahar] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
has suspended more than 10,000 teachers over suspected links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a Turkish official said on Thursday, following a purge of education staff in the wake of the failed coup bid.

"The individuals in question are temporarily suspended -- placed on paid leave -- pending formal investigation," the official said on condition of anonymity.

A total of 11,500 teachers suspected by the education ministry of having engaged in activities "in support of the separatist terrorist organization and its affiliates" have been suspended, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The PKK, which has waged a three-decade insurgency against the Turkish state, is listed as a terror group by Ankara and its Western allies.

The number was expected to go up to 14,000 based on the results of an investigation carried out in coordination with local governors' offices, Anadolu said, without elaborating further.

The suspension comes just over a week before the new school year gets underway in Turkey.

In a key visit to the Kurdish-majority city Diyarbakir in the southeast on Sunday, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said up to 14,000 teachers would be suspended over links to the PKK.

There are 850,000 teachers in Turkey.

Hostage rescue was aborted while Obama vacationed
More on this story from yesterday.
[AMINEWSWIRE] Some 90 minutes after Weeks and King were captured, the president arrived at the Farm Neck Golf Club on Martha's Vineyard, according to White House press pool reports. As the hostages were spirited away by their abductors and authorities in Afghanistan scrambled to find them, Obama teed off at the semi-private course that bills itself as offering "an idyllic setting" for golf. The president’s golf partners were Chris Paul, Cy Walker and Joe Paulsen, according to pool reports.

Over the course of the next two weeks, the Obamas enjoyed a holiday marked by trips to the beach, dinners with friends, and -- for the president -- round after round of golf.

"The hostages didn't have the luxury of time," said an official with knowledge of the events. "The president was on vacation. How could he not find time to approve this mission?"

[BREITBART] Filmmaker, actor and outspoken Donald Trump detractor Rob Reiner says it is impossible to level with the Republican presidential nominee’s bigoted supporters, who are “mostly white males who don’t have college degrees.”
That means they're stupid, y'see...
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said that there’s “a very serious strain of racism” that runs through those supporting the Republican presidential nominee.
Meathead writes off Archie.
“And that’s a kind of disturbing thing, and I don’t think you ever reach those people. I think that they’re impossible to turn around. It’s very disturbing because a lot of these racist ideas have kind of been dormant for a while, and he’s given voice to them — he’s kind of unearthed it. And the thing that’s most disturbing is to discover that there’s so many people that still hold those views,” Reiner said.

Afghanistan
1 dead in bombing in Jalalabad
A civilian was killed and another one was injured in an explosion in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The incident took place earlier today after explosives planted near a shop was detonated as the two victims, father and son, were opening their shop.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Ataullah Khogyani confirmed the incident and said the man was killed and his son was injured in the attack.

Khogyani further added that the man was initially wounded and succumbed to his injuries in the way to hospital.

No group including the Taliban insurgents has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

Nangarhar is among the relatively volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where the anti-government armed militant groups including the Taliban insurgents and the loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group are actively operating in a number of its districts.

The Afghan forces are busy to eliminate the presence of the Taliban and ISIS loyalists as part of their annual operation launched in response to the spring offensive of the militants.

Turkey Detains Female PKK Militant at Istanbul Airport
[AlAhram] Turkish security forces on Thursday detained a female myrmidon member of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) at Istanbul airport on suspicion of planning an attack in the city, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

The woman, identified as Ebru Firat, was detained following a tip-off after she flew into the city's Ataturk airport, the agency said.

It said the woman, whose code name was "Amara", could have come to the city to stage an attack. The agency said the woman had in the past been photographed next to Murat Karayilan, one of the PKK's top leaders in northern Iraq.

The pro-government Sabah daily said Firat were tossed into the calaboose after arriving on a flight from Diyarbakir in the Kurdish-dominated southeast and had been planning a suicide kaboom in Istanbul.

Afghanistan
Trin Kot City Cleared Of Taliban
Not really. Talibunnies are prolly repacking mags
Security forces in Uruzgan said on Saturday that with the help of airstrikes and reinforcements they have been able to push back the Taliban from Trin Kot city in Urozgan province.

But Afghan security forces have said they are running low on ammunition.

Clashes reached a peak on Thursday between security forces and the Taliban after the insurgent group made a concerted effort to take the city.

However, reinforcement troops and Special Forces were sent in to help local security forces. Airstrikes were also conducted against the insurgents on the outskirts of the city.

"The operation is continuing but the enemy is weak," said a soldier stationed in Uruzgan.

The shortage of ammunition has however been a constant concern for Afghan soldiers in fighting the Taliban.

"Our ammunition is finished. Our tanks have technical problems or have been burned in fires," said one policeman stationed in Uruzgan.
Meanwhile Trin Kot residents are slowly returning to normal life although clashes are still ongoing on the outskirts of the city.

"We defeated the insurgents in the city. Our friends lost their lives or were wounded. Our tanks are destroyed or burned," said one local police commander.

Uruzgan has six districts of which Khas Uruzgan, Chinartoo, Deh Rawood and Gizab are under threat and surrounded by insurgents.

"Taliban are pushed back, but they are in villages and a few districts of the province surrounded by the insurgents," Raihana Azad, an MP from Urozgan said.

Urozgan has border with Helmand, Zabul, Kandahar and Ghazni which their security threats are high. But insecurity and Taliban's activities in Urozgan have put Daikundi province under serous security threats.

er, afghan security forces are complaining about the shortage of ammunition.
[sic] A comment from the Tolo News typesetter that he forgot to remove?
Taliban was pushed back from the nearby of Trinkot city as operations was conducted by Special Forces along air strikes.

"Operation goes ahead well and the enemy is weak," said a special force stationed in Urozgan.

Shortage of ammunition always has been a matter of concern for the afghan soldiers in fighting the Taliban. Thus, in Urozgan also this is a concern for the security forces.

"Our weapons and ammunitions are finished. Our tanks got technical problems or burned in fire," said a police, stationed in Urozgan.

Again people started their normal life in Trinkot city, but they are concerned of heavy clashes that are ongoing between security forces and Taliban in nearby areas.

"We defeated the city. Our friends lost their lives or wounded. Our tanks are destroyed or burned down," said a commander of local police.

Urozgan has six districts of which Khas Urozgan, Chinartoo, Deh Rawood and Gizab are under threats and could be surrounded by the insurgents.

IAF attacks in Syria after spillover fire, Syrian source says Israel helping rebels
[Jpost] The Israel Air Force struck Assad regime artillery guns on Saturday in response to a stray mortar shell fired from Syria exploding on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights earlier in the day.

The IDF said in a statement that holds the Syrian regime "responsible for what occurs in its territory," and it will "not tolerate any attempt to harm the State of Israel’s illusory sovereignty and the security of its residents."

It was the third time in a week that the air force responded to stray Syrian fire.

On Thursday, the IAF also targeted Syrian artillery units after a stray shell hit some 15 kilometers inside Israeli territory. That shell too was fired in the course of civil war battles in southern Syria.

Last Sunday, the IAF also attacked Syrian artillery following stray fire into Israel.

On June 7, shortly after becoming defense minister, Avigdor Liberman toured the northern border, and said, "The role of the IDF here is to safeguard the quiet on the northern border, and that is what we are doing. We have no other plans, other than to safeguard the quiet, and I hope that everyone understands that well, including our neighbors."

Liberman added, "In any case, I would not advise anyone to try and test us."

SC Sen. Tim Scott: Election offers change, not a perfect candidate
[Wash Times] Sen. Tim Scott said Friday that voters won’t have the chance to pick the perfect presidential in the 2016 election, but they will have the chance to vote to stop the policies of the Obama policies from continuing another four years.

Without mentioning Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump by name, Mr. Scott, told social conservatives gathered at a hotel in Washington for the 11th annual Values Voter Summit that the election is a "binary choice" between voting for the the policies of the last eight years -- which he blamed for increased poverty, and which expanded the food stamp rolls and led to sluggish economic growth -- or "you can vote for hope."

"You can vote for an alternative. You can vote ... to ’Make America Great Again,’ " he said, alluding to Mr Trump’s campaign slogan.

Mr. Scott prefaced his remarks by suggesting there is no ideal candidate in the race.

"I would like to tell you that one day we are going to have the perfect candidate to lead this country," he said, before rolling his eyes at the idea. "I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t think it is going to happen anytime soon."

ISIS leaves position in Hama

[ARA News] HAMA – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) evacuated on Saturday their main bastion in Syria’s western Hama province, activists reported.

ISIS militants evacuated their headquarters in the Rasm al-Abd town east of Hama and moved their weapons and vehicles to the nearby Homs province.

“Dozens of ISIS vehicles, carrying weapons and fighters, were seen leaving the town on Saturday evening, heading towards Homs,” local media activist Abduljabar al-Hamwi told ARA News.

The evacuated headquarters included the ISIS Hisba police department, a weapons store and a major security centre.

“Most of the group’s members have taken their families with them during the sudden evacuation,” al-Hamwi reported.

Rasm al-Abd town was a major bastion for ISIS in Hama, from which the group used to launch attacks on Syrian army forces in the province.

In the meantime, fighting continued between the Syrian regime’s forces and ISIS militants east of Homs province, as the group continued attempts to advance towards the Palmyra city.

This comes just a few days after ISIS militants evacuated their headquarters in the al-Bab city in the northern Aleppo province.

Bus Bomb Attack Thwarted in Aden
Yemeni security services foiled an attempt to carry out a terrorist attack using a bus laden with explosives. Aden police’s anti-terrorism unit succeeded in preventing the attack before it could take place on Friday.

An anti-terrorism unit belonging to Aden police thwarted the bus bombing in the Sheikh Othman district where the driver of the bus was arrested before he could detonate the bomb in the middle of the Al-Hashemi station for passengers. The press bureau for Aden police said that, according to security information, the anti-terrorism unit travelled to where the driver of the bus was and arrested him before he could carry out the terrorist attack.

In a statement, police said “Whilst the anti-terrorism unit besieged the bus, the bus driver tried to resist by using a firearm that he was in possession of. However, the anti-terrorism unit opened fire on his foot and he was injured. He then surrendered and immediately after that, bomb disposal experts defused the bombs. Had the bombs gone off, it would have been a real disaster amidst a residential neighbourhood where many people live”.

According to the driver’s initial confessions, he was instructed to park the bus in a crowded place and detonate the bombs on board on the first day of Eid in order to create chaos and panic amongst the population of the province of Aden, and this is the third successful operation to thwart attacks that Aden police have carried out in less than 24 hours.

Anti-terrorism police seized a vehicle loaded with dozens of sticky bombs that are used in assassinations in the main street in the district of Mualla, Aden, late on Thursday evening. The driver of the car, who was on his own, was taken away to be investigated.

Terrorist groups have been using sticky explosives in assassination operations that target security and military leaders before security forces in Aden were able to dismantle a large number of criminal gangs and arrest its members, including leaders who are wanted for crimes related to terrorism.

province.

"There was a hearing into the bail application by Samia Shahid's father, but the court rejected it," defence lawyer Mian Arif told AFP.

Arif said that the next hearing would take place next week in Jhelum, while the accused would file another bail petition to the high court.

The victims's second husband, Mukhtar Kazam, claims she was murdered for bringing "dishonour" to her family.

Kazam has said his wife had angered her parents by converting to his sect, before their wedding.

Police have accused her ex-husband Muhammad Shakeel and father Muhammad Shahid of being involved in her killing.

Shahid's ex-husband has also been charged with raping her.

Police have also accused Samia's mother and sister of abetting the crime; however, the two have fled to the UK, according to police.

Clashes in Tripoli between Tripoli Revolutionaries’ Brigade and Misratan forces
[Libya Herald] Clashes broke out this afternoon between the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Revolutionaries’ Brigade (TRB) and a Misratan militia near Triq al-Sika ("Railway Road") and in the area of the Sidi Masri roundabout. They continued until late night.

Heavy weapons were used and the firing was random, especially in the area along the main road by Tripoli University and Tripoli Medical Centre, causing panic among passing drivers and passengers. The festivities also continued after sunset to Hay Demashque and by the government hospitality buildings there opposite the Rixos hotel, currently being used by the State Council.

The festivities followed a warning three days ago from the TRB, led by Haithem Tajouri
...Commander of the pro-(Islamist) government First Support Brigade...
, to people who had misappropriated land on government land between the adjoining Hadba and Abu Sleem districts to quit the area and remove buildings erected within 72 hours or force would be used against them.

Most of those who had taken over the land are alleged to be Misratans linked to the militias.

This evening at checkpoints set by the TRB near Sidi Masri district, it is reported that anyone from Misrata was being tossed in the clink
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
. Misratans in Tripoli have been phoning each other warning them to avoid the area.

There has been growing resentment in the capital at the presence of the Misratan forces which are being used to protect the Presidency Council and equally between them and local militias. There have already been several festivities between the TRB and Misratan militias.

Russian Forces Targeted 59 Medical Centers in Syria
Beirut- The Syrian Network for Human Rights has said that attacks on medical centers in Syria haven’t stopped, and even escalated alarmingly after the High Negotiation Committee’s decision to postpone its participation in the Geneva talks on April 19.

The report documents the targeting of no less than 59 medical centers by attacks that are suspected to be Russian.

The report, which was the 17th to be published by SNHR since the Russian attacks in Syria began on September 30, 2015, focuses on the targeting of medical centers from the beginning of the Russian intervention in Syria until August 31, 2016.

Fadel Abdul Ghani, chairman of SNHR, says: “Russian forces’ attacks on medical centers and medics are a blatant violation of the international humanitarian law and amount to a war crime on account of the fact that these attacks are indiscriminate and in many cases deliberately targeted protected objects. These attacks have deepened the agonies of the wounded and injured and are one of the main causes of the displacement of the Syrian people as the send a very clear message: there is no safe area or a red line including hospitals, you either flee or perish.”

The report draws upon the daily documentation and monitoring and includes accounts by survivors, victims’ families, and eyewitnesses.

The report documents the targeting of no less than 59 medical centers by attacks that are suspected to be Russian including five facilities that were targeted more than once. Eighty four percent of the attacks occurred in Aleppo and Idlib governorates.

According to the report, these attacks resulted in the killing of 86 civilians including eight children and 13 women. Also, 26 out of the 86 civilian victims were medical personnel.

The report notes that the Russian regime has, beyond any doubt, violated Security Council Resolutions 2139 through the practices of indiscriminate bombardment. Also, the Russian regime violated many rules of international humanitarian law and committed dozens of crimes that amount to war crimes through the indiscriminate bombardment which was also disproportionate in its use of excessive force.

According to the report, Russian forces perpetrated a violation that constitute a war crime through targeting medical centers with an indiscriminate, and in many cases, deliberate bombardment on objects that are supposedly protected.

The report calls on Russian forces to conduct investigations with regard to the incidents mentioned in the report and make the findings of the probe public for the Syrian people.

It also urges Russian forces to hold all those who are responsible accountable in addition to redress all the damaged hospitals, and to reconstruct and re-prepare them. Additionally, all victims’ families and wounded must be compensated.

Israel ‘bracing for attack’ by IS in Sinai in next 6 months
[IsraelTimes] Army official tells Telegraph hard boyz on southern border are arming themselves with military vehicles, heavy weaponry ahead of likely assault

Israel is preparing for an attack by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
’s Egyptian affiliate, Wilayat Sinai ("Sinai Province"), within the next six months, a top military official told the UK’s Telegraph.

The unnamed official quoted by the newspaper Friday said Israel believes the group will soon use weapons and vehicles stolen from Egypt’s military to stage an attack on the Jewish state’s southern border with the Sinai Peninsula.

The weaponry includes an Egyptian tank and Russian-made Kornet anti-tank missiles, the officer said.

"It could happen today, tomorrow, in a month but within the next six months we will come into an engagement with Wilayat Sinai," the official said. "In the next six months they will try to carry out an attack and try to do something against Israel."

The group was established as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis
...Supporters of Jerusalem, the current pen name of al-Qaeda in the Sinai Peninsula...
in 2011, amid the revolution that brought about the ouster of Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
. Comprised of gunnies and former al-Qaeda gunnies, it sought to fight both the Egyptian state as well as Israel.

In 2014, as the Islamic State swept into power in vast regions of Syria and Iraq, the organization pledged allegiance to the group and renamed itself as the "Sinai Province."

The Israeli official noted that the hard boyz would need to make good on the group’s founding principles in the near future.

"Many terrorist organizations use Israel as a prop but, for these statements to have any content or not be seen as empty, something must eventually happen in the field," he said.

The last major attack on Israel’s southern border was in 2012, when hard boyz belonging to the group, then still known as Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, smashed into Israel through the Kerem Shalom border crossing with Egypt.

The heavily armed gunnies killed at least 16 Egyptian soldiers and commandeered two Egyptian armored vehicles before attempting to cross into Israel.

One vehicle went kaboom! at the border, but the second managed to enter Israeli territory.

The six attackers inside then managed to drive about a mile into Israel, and were traveling at 70 kilometers an hour along the road toward Kibbutz Kerem Shalom, before the Israeli Air Force was able to get a clear shot and blow the vehicle up. Gunmen who survived the blast were killed in an ensuing firefight with Israeli soldiers.

The Israeli army official told the Telegraph that Israel believed the group to be well more equipped today than it was then.
The Jerusalem Post adds:
Earlier this year, Israel tightened security and built a new barrier along the Israel-Egypt border, after reports from sources close to the bully boy group have claimed to be planning attacks against Israel in the south. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the security coordination between Egypt and Israel, saying that without increased security efforts "we would have been overflowed by thousands of ISIS fighters from Sinai."

Spanish Hooligans Held for Assault on Pregnant Muslim Woman
Equal and opposite reaction.
[AnNahar] Two football hooligans have been detained for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman wearing a niqab in Barcelona, police said Thursday, as anti-Islam hate crimes soar in Spain.

The woman, who is eight months pregnant, was walking through the center of the seaside city last week with her husband and two children, and was rebuked by the two ultras because she was wearing the Islamic veil, police said in a statement.

Her husband reacted and was assaulted by the pair, who have not been named but are said by police to have links to the far-right Brigadas Blanquiazules group, which supports the Espanyol football team in Barcelona.

The club banned members of this group from entering its stadium in 2010.

The woman tried to intervene and one of the ultras kicked her in the stomach, police said, adding the two were subsequently detained and have since been accused of hate crime, discrimination and personal injury.

Hospital checks found no damage to either the woman -- who has not been named -- or her baby, police said.

The assault comes with anti-Islam hate crimes on the rise in Spain.

In April, Mounir Benjelloun, head of the Spanish Federation of Islamic Religious Entities, told AFP 534 anti-Islam incidents were reported in Spain last year, a more than tenfold jump from 2014. He said these acts of violence increased whenever there was a high-profile bad boy incident elsewhere, such as the January 2015 attack against satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
, police and a kosher supermarket in Gay Paree.

"We're talking about this case because it has come out into the open," Benjelloun told AFP Thursday. "But there are incidents in Spain every day."

In March, people linked to a far-right group protested outside one of Madrid's main mosques after the deadly Brussels airport and metro attacks.

The protesters gathered at the Omar mosque and placed a large placard that read: "Today Brussels, tomorrow Madrid?".

Several mosques have also been vandalized.

India-Pakistan
Junket for Kashmir
[DAWN] As moral human beings, we deplore the violence being committed by Indian forces in IHK: over 70 unarmed civilians have been killed, thousands maimed, and scores blinded with shotgun pellets in the recent surge in brutality. Ever since Burhan Wani, the charismatic Robin Hood of the Kashmiri resistance, was killed in July, there has been a sharp spike in Indian repression.

But as pragmatic, rational people, we should also recognise that there is little Pakistain can do to change the status quo. The Shimla Agreement of 1972 specifically calls on both countries to "settle their differences by peaceful means through bilateral negotiations"’. So Indians argue that Pakistain has contravened the agreement by seeking to internationalise the dispute.

Albert Einstein famously defined insanity as doing something over and over again and expecting a different result. So, too, has Pakistain battered in vain on the wall of Indian obduracy, and hammered time and again at the doors of the international community. We have tried war, diplomacy and jihadi proxies. Nothing has worked.

The reality -- if we are ready to accept and absorb it -- is that the world is sick and tired of the never-ending Pak-India squabbling over Kashmire. While we may deplore the injustice of the situation, and shed tears over the plight of the Kashmiris, nobody else is paying much attention. This is why Indian forces can literally get away with murder.

The hard truth is that states do not hand over real estate they control willingly. No matter what the rights and wrongs of the matter, countries cling on to land in a vice-like grip. Look at Israel: apart from expanding its UN-mandated territory in the immediate aftermath of its birth in 1948, it continues to hang on to large swathes of Paleostinian land in the West Bank nearly 50 years after grabbing it in 1967. Despite several UN resolutions and considerable international pressure, Israel is still the occupying power.

Iraq
Yezidis react angrily to film set during genocide
[RUDAW.NET] The opening film of the Duhok International Film Festival, which tells a love story set during the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
seizure of Sinjar and genocide of the Yezidi people, was received angrily by some in the audience as it struck close to still open wounds.

The film, The Dark Wind, Reseba in Kurdish, from director Hussein Hassan, tells the story of Reko and Pero. The couple became engaged shortly before ISIS attacks their village in Sinjar. Pero and many Yezidi girls and women are captured and sold as slaves. Reko is left behind, determined to find her.

In the trailer, Pero returns but Reko’s family has trouble accepting her, broken by the horrors she suffered.

Crowds flooded out of the screening, upset because they believe Pero was killed in the film.

"The Yazidis are not killing their daughters," a young man shouted.

"It is not true...everything is a lie," another shouted among a crowd of protesters holding signs reading "Stop Reseba."

Even before the screening, some people protested the depiction of events in the film.

Commenting on the trailer of the film on YouTube, a commenter using the name faesal gyan, said, "The film says it is based on true events... at the last scene the father does not agree to the marriage of his son to the girl because she was released from the hands of ISIS and she was raped. We absolutely refuse this thing. It is not the tradition of the Yezidis. We call for deleting such scenes because it never happened."

The director, Hussein Hassan, speaking to Rudaw after the screening, said the movie was made in cooperation with Yezidi religious leaders and the Lalish cultural centre. During his meetings with the Yezidi community leaders, he was asked to change how the treatment of Pero by her family and community was depicted in the film.

Dimen Zandi, the actor who plays Pero, confirmed to Rudaw that her character is not killed in the movie.

Ayub Ramazan, director of art and culture in Duhok province, told Rudaw that the audience did not wait until the end of the film to see the conclusion before leaving the theatre to protest.

A member of the Yezidi Lalish cultural centre told Rudaw, "The final scene that shows the father and her brothers treating her in such [a bad way] has never happened in reality. Every returning girl was welcomed with open arms and has been seen as halal [allowed in Yazidi religion]."

The Yezidi genocide, which began two years ago, is still going on. Thousands of Yezidi girls and women are still in ISIS captivity and the true magnitude of the crimes against the Yezidi community are still to be known as the girls and women are found, mass graves are located, and areas are liberated from ISIS control.

Yezidi leaders have said they will meet to discuss how to react to the film.

The film is billed as the first feature film about the Yezidi people.

Bangladesh
The hanging of Mir Quasem Ali
[DAWN] PAKISTAN’S Foreign Office says Pakistain is "deeply saddened" by the execution in Bangladesh last week of Mir Quasem Ali
...Jamaat-e-Islamic Central Committee member and Saudi money man in Bangla. Currently waiting to be hanged....
. Mir Quasem was found guilty in 2014 by a Bangladeshi court of torture, multiple murders and arson. He was sentenced to death after what Pakistain describes as "a flawed judicial process".

But why is Pakistain so worried about the integrity of Bangladesh’s judicial process? And why does our government care so greatly about the death of another country’s citizen -- one accused of heinous crimes? The answer: when it comes to Bangladesh, Pakistain remains chained to its past.

Death toll soars after air strikes on Syria’s Idlib
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Air strikes that hit a market and areas of the rebel-held northwestern city of Idlib Saturday killed dozens of people, a monitor said, a day after Russia and the US agreed a truce for Syria.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the raids that also hit several neighborhoods in Idlib and maimed at least 90 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The initial corpse count figure was put at 24, but later soared to 58. But the Britannia-based monitor could not immediately confirm how many of the casualties were civilians saying some bodies "were burned beyond recognition".

But according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the dead included 13 women and 13 children, but it was not immediately clear how many civilians were among the remaining victims.

An AFP photographer in Idlib saw men clambering over rubble, in just slippers or sandals, to help evacuate maimed, dust-covered residents and children from a collapsing building.

Others tried to lift a bloodied shopper who had collapsed on the ground as a fire raged in a nearby open-air clothes market.

A man, with a head wound, walked away clutching the hand of a barefooted boy. The raids also destroyed several shops and cars in the area.

After marathon talks in Geneva, US Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said a ceasefire would begin Monday, the first day of the Moslem feast of Eid al-Adha.

If the deal is implemented, Syria’s armed forces would stop air strikes on rebel-held areas and desperately-needed aid would reach war-weary civilians.

UN Sherlocks last week said aerial bombardment by Syrian forces and their Russian ally, namely in Idlib and Aleppo, were causing huge civilian casualties and destroying vital infrastructure.

Since spring 2015, most of Idlib province has been held by an alliance of rebels, Islamists, and jihadists known as the Army of Conquest.

The Army of Conquest - led by the Fateh al-Sham

More than 290,000 people have been killed since Syria’s conflict first erupted in March 2011, and several attempts at securing a long-lasting truce have faltered.

Europe
Another arrest for all-female cell plotting attacks on Paris train stations, police
[IsraelTimes] As officials continue to question three women suspects, interior minister says 293 people tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
this year for ’links to terror networks

French Sherlocks were on Saturday probing a group of women arrested on suspicion of plotting new jihadist attacks, including an attempted boom-mobile near Gay Paree’s Notre Dame cathedral.

An examining magistrate was asked to place a suspect, named as 29-year-old Ornella G., under formal investigation over the would-be attack in the heart of historic Gay Paree.

Ornella G.’s fingerprints were found in a Peugeot car abandoned on Sunday a few hundred meters from Notre Dame with five gas cylinders and three bottles of diesel fuel inside, according to the probe.

Investigators told AFP Ornella G. and Ines Madani, 19, the daughter of the owner of the car had apparently tried to set fire to the vehicle but "fled when they saw a man they believed to be a plain-clothes policeman."

Ornella G., who was on security service files for plans to get to Syria, was arrested in southern La Belle France on Tuesday with her partner, who was later released, Sherlocks said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio had his hands full of angry bleached blonde...
Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on Saturday that police had arrested 293 people this year for "links to terrorist networks."

"This amounts to networks that have been dismantled and attacks that have been prevented," Cazeneuve said on a trip to Chateauroux, central La Belle France.

Cazeneuve added that 17 foreigners had been expelled since the start of the year for posing a "serious threat to public order."

The latest was a Russian national, Mansur Kudusov, who was expelled to Russia on Friday after being incarcerated
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
for breaching house arrest, he said. Kudusov's lawyer said he was a Chechen born in 1991 who had arrived in La Belle France as a child and had been sent to his room in 2012.
The Jerusalem Post adds the name and links of Sarah H's latest fiance:
Mohamed Lamine A, who was due to marry Sarah H, was also arrested on Thursday. That man was also connected to the Abballa attack, according to Molins, who identified him as the brother of a friend of the police killer.
Update at 8:30 a.m. from Deutsche Welle, which has this sad description of a woman thrice betrothed but never described as married:
...29-year-old Ornella G., a mother of three...
Very late update from The Daily Mail at 10:20 p.m. ET giving us full names:
Ornella Gilligman facing attempted murder and planning terrorist act trial. Other suspects named as Sarah Hervouet, Amel Sakaou and Ines Madani.

Bangladesh
One militant dead, 3 held in Azimpur raid
[Dhaka Tribune] The Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes (CTTC) unit captured three suspected female murderous Moslems during a raid at a krazed killer den in Dhaka’s Azimpur area last night while another killed himself.

The murderous Moslems were staying at a flat on the first floor of a six-storey building at Pilkhana Road in the area for around a month, said Sahabuddin Koreshi, acting commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque told news hounds: "We suspect that one of the injured women is Jebunnahar Shila, wife of New JMB offshoot leader Murad alias Jahangir alias Omar, who was killed during a raid in Mirpur earlier this month."

Police also rescued three children from the building who were sent to the Victim Support Centre in Tejgaon, the IGP added.

"We have found remarkable similarities between the dead krazed killer and Karim, who rented the flat in Bashundhara Residential Area for the Gulshan attackers," the IGP told news hounds.

At an on-spot briefing after the raid, Counterterrorism unit’s ADC Sanwar Hossain said Abdul Karim killed himself inside the den and the three captured women also attempted suicide.

"It is likely they wanted to kill themselves so that we could not interrogate them," the officer said.

The third female fled the house. Law enforcers chased her and caught her some 400 metres away after shooting her in the leg.

A local named Shahubuddin Babu said: "We saw a woman escaping the area around 7:30pm. Later, some police members chased her. During the chase, she yelled that if the police officials tried to capture her, she would attack them with machete.

"The law enforcers shot her in her leg and caught her, putting her in the police van with the locals’ help."

"The other two female murderous Moslems have been identified as Sharmin and Shahela,"said Sanwar Hossain. "They are at death's door."

The CTTC officials who were maimed in the raid ‐ Mahtab, Jahiruddin, Lablu, Ram Chandra Biswas and Shajahan Ali ‐ have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, police said.

These were members of the advance team, which knocked on the den’s door and were attacked soon afterward. The backup team then arrived at the scene and found Karim’s body in one of the rooms and the other women trying to commit suicide.

The children, too, were aggressive towards the police, ADC Sanwar said.

A search of the flat yielded four pistols and 15 bullets, he added.

ISIS beats 14 barbers in Mosul

(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – A local source in Nineveh province revealed that the ISIS members have flogged 14 barbers after abducting them from different areas of Mosul, and detaining them for a week.

Sharing more details with Iraqi News, the source informed, “The ISIS members flogged 14 barbers with 20 lashes each, after abducting them from different areas of Mosul, and detaining them for a week, as well as preventing them from working for a whole month,” noting that, “The barbers were flogged for violating the ideological standards of the organization.”

“ISIS threatened to impose strict procedures on those who will violate the grooming regulations set by the organization,” the source added.

It may be mentioned here that ISIS has imposed tight regulations for those working in the profession of grooming in the areas of Mosul, in order to prevent western haircuts.

180 ISIS troops flee Mosul with families

(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – A security source in Nineveh province declared that more than 180 ISIS members have fled from Mosul, along with their families, toward the Syrian city of Raqqa.

Sharing more information with Iraqi News, the source revealed, “Yesterday, more than 180 ISIS members fled, along with their families, from al-Sukar neighborhood in central Mosul toward the Syrian city of Raqqa.”

“The fleeing ISIS members were riding vehicles carrying the plates of Nineveh province.”

ISIS executes Syrian rebel

[ARA News] HOMS – Extremists of the Islamic State (ISIS) have executed a Syrian rebel fighter in Homs province on charges of fighting against the group’s self-declared Caliphate.

Muhammad Awad, a member of the US-backed New Syrian Army (NSA), was beheaded by ISIS on Friday.

The radical group released a propaganda video showing the beheading of Awad after accusing him of cooperating with the ‘crusader coalition’ in the fight against the so-called ‘Caliphate’.

The New Syrian Army, which was founded by army defectors in November of 2015, consists of thousands of Syrian rebels who received training by the US-led coalition in Jordan before being engaged in fighting against ISIS in southern and eastern Syria.

Speaking to ARA News in Homs, media activist Badee al-Homsi said that ISIS has captured a number of NSA rebels after clashes in the eastern Deir ez-Zor province and aims to behead them “one by one”.

“The radical group is filming the execution of the US-backed NSA hostages in different parts of Syria, in order to deliver a message that it’s still in control of large territories across the country despite the continuous efforts by the coalition and allied ground troops to eliminate ISIS in Syria,” al-Homsi said. “The group made clear that the execution of Awad was just the beginning of a series of executions against western-backed rebel fighters held by ISIS.”

Home Front: Politix
Trump camp demands apology for Clinton's 'basket of deplorables' remark
[POLITICO] Donald Trump’s campaign is demanding an apology for comments Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as For a good time at 3 a.m. call Hillary and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Philander C. Knox ...
made at a fundraising event Friday in New York City, where she said half of his supporters belonged in a "basket of deplorables" -- "the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it."
That sounds like most of us, I guess. We turn racist, along with our candidates, every four years. We like looking at pretty girls. We're not convinced boys who dress up like girls should be allowed to infest girls' locker rooms, we prefer immigrants have visas and no tattoos on their faces, and we think most of the terrorism in the world stems from three particular sects of Islam.
Sunni, Shia, and ??
Deobandi.
The Republican nominee tweeted Saturday morning: "Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of amazing, hard working people. I think it will cost her at the Polls!"
They consider the fact that their party is anti-white and anti-Asian and anti-working class to be a selling point.
"Come to an event; talk to real people who aren't donors," Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway wrote in a Twitter exchange with Clinton front man Nick Merrill earlier Saturday morning. "Or better: have Hillary apologize."
Seppuku on national TV sounds appropriate.
Neera Tanden, head of the liberal Center for American Progress and a close Clinton ally, shot back at Conway: "let's make a deal: your campaign apologizes for calling Mexican immigrants colonists rapists and we'll talk."
He said the rapists were immigrants, not vice versa.
These are not the people who said,"Word order has meaning." That would require higher level thinking.
The event, a gala for the group LGBT for Hillary at Cipriani Wall Street that featured Barbara Streisand, was not the first time Clinton has used the term. But her extended riff this time drew swift and harsh condemnation from Republicans -- as well as comparisons to past presidential campaign gaffes.
Drag a dollar through a trailer park and you'll get us.
Clinton’s comments came as she urged the crowd of donors not to "get complacent" after seeing "the latest outrageous, offensive, inappropriate comment" from Trump and assume, "Well, he's done this time."
Neither should White, Hispanic, black, or Asian working people get complacent at the latest puddle of drool from Hillarity.
Trump has defined his campaign at times as a crusade against "political correctness" and offended minority groups with his comments about Moslems, Mexicans and African-Americans. His new campaign team -- led by Conway -- has sought to steer him in a more inclusive direction. Polls suggest he has made few inroads among minority voters, though he has recovered somewhat with the college-educated white voters who are crucial to any winning Republican coalition.
He's appealing to the law-abiding, regardless of education or color.
Clinton's campaign has hardly disguised its strategy of associating Trump with the far-right elements of his base and reminding voters of his most incendiary remarks, hoping to arrest any further improvement in his numbers.
Every election the Republican's a racist and an "extremist." Romney was a racist and an extremist. McCain was racist and extremist. Bush was racist and extremist. Dole was racist and extremist. You get the picture.
"You know," Clinton said at the LGBT event, "to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables."
Preferably just our heads, of course. But that's not extremist.
"Right?" Clinton said as the crowd laughed and applauded.
Sure. Put your head on the block, extremist!
"The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic -- you name it," Clinton continued. "And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people -- now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric."
The Times of Israel adds:
Hillary Clinton said Saturday that she was “grossly generalistic” in calling half of Donald Trump’s supporters a “basket of deplorables,” after the Republican nominee argued that her comments had smeared many Americans and would take a political toll.

Less than 24 hours after she made the statement at a private New York City fundraiser. Clinton said “I regret saying ‘half’ — that was wrong.” But she argued that the word “deplorable” was reasonable to describe much of Trump’s campaign.

Shiite militia leader advises Peshmerga to ‘protect own borders’, stay out of Mosul
[RUDAW.NET] A Shiite militia official issued a strong warning to the Kurdish Peshmerga on Saturday, saying that the Peshmerga should retreat from all areas they have liberated from Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in Nineveh Province and that they "do not need the Peshmerga" to support Iraqi armed forces in the looming battle for djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"We are going to take part in the battle for Mosul and we do not need Kurds or the Peshmerga to assist our forces," Karim Nuri, spokesperson for the Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi militias, told Rudaw TV, warning that they "advise the Peshmerga to protect the Kurdistan Region borders and do not distract themselves with entering Mosul. If they do, they will definitely play with fire."

Nuri said that they in no way will allow "the annexation of Mosul areas including Shingal, Makhmour, and Bashiqa into the Kurdistan Region."

"We are calling our Kurdish brothers and the Peshmerga to protect their region’s border. We could liberate the city without them and even do not need them. All they have to do is protect their own borders."

Nuri warned that Kurds should not claim that they are "redrawing their borders with blood," referencing previous speeches from Kurdish President Masoud Barzani. "We are partners and in one trench together. Please, let the love and respect that existed between us remain as it is. Mosul should not be put under Kurdish administration, at all. The same for Shingal and other areas."

He reiterated that the Shiite militias will "play a decisive role" in the anticipated Mosul offensive, despite calls from local Nineveh populations, including Sunnis and Christians, that the Shiite militias should not be involved in order to avoid sectarian festivities.

"Of course we will participate in the battle and play a decisive role in it. We are committed to orders being issued from the Iraqi Armed Forces Command" led by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, Nuri said.

He stressed that "ISIS cannot be defeated without help from the Hashd forces. It has been proven in previous battles that we can end the battle. When ISIS hears the Hashd is coming, they will be defeated. Again our forces will participate in the battle and nobody can deter us. We do not need permission from any party."

He said that the Shiite militias will participate in the battle on multiple fronts but would not provide details for operational security reasons.

Last month, top Peshmerga commander Shiekh Jaafar Mustafa told Rudaw that any offensive to retake Mosul would be impossible without Kurdish support because "the Peshmerga surrounds and controls many areas and supply routes on the eastern and western sides of Mosul city."

When that issue was raised to Nuri, he stressed that Kurdish and Shiite forces are in the same trenches together, and have coordinated in many previous battles. We "have the same destiny," he said.

#1  A portent of clashes to come. The Kurds have certainly a greater claim to the settlement of Mosul -- especially the eastern city -- than have the Shiites. The Iranian hope to split the Sunni and Kurdish leadership in Iraq thus far has not worked. (Note the article on Kirkuk oil in Rantburg, above.) The Iraqi quagmire remains just that, a quagmire, and the final Sunni-Shiite battle for control of territory before the partition of Iraq awaits.

Baghdad wants back all oilfields that fell to Kurds during ISIS war
[RUDAW.NET] Iraq's ministry of oil says that it intends to retake full control of all Kirkuk oil fields that fell to the Peshmerga during the war with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) and that the recent rise of export from Kirkuk is part of an old agreement with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) that had been temporarily cancelled due to sabotage against the pipeline that passes through The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
"The oil ministry reaffirms that the old agreement still stands as it was taken into account in the last two year’s fiscal budget and that of 2017. What happened was that due to sabotage against the pipeline that passes through Turkey the ministry halted exports of Kirkuk oil through the pipes." Iraq’s oil ministry said in a statement late Friday.

It also said no changes had been made to the 2014 December agreement that tentatively solved the lingering oil dispute between the two administrations. The ministry said that the resumption of Kirkuk oil exports will help the North Oil Company and the province financially.

"The resumption of oil exports through the Turkish Ceyhan port will bring extra income that will cover the operation costs of the North Oil Company and Kirkuk’s own share of petrodollars." the statement read.

The Iraqi oil ministry emphasizes in the statement its intention to take back all oil wells and fields that came under Kurdish Peshmerga control two years ago.

It said: "The oil ministry will also try to retake full control of all Kirkuk oilfields that were administered by the NOC before the terrorist gangs of ISIS entered Iraqi territories and before the Peshmerga forces seized some oil wells during the previous government."

On August 29, a top Kurdish delegation headed by the KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani visited Baghdad where he met with Iraq's Prime Minister Haidar Abadi regarding production and export of oil.

The export of crude from Kirkuk rose in late August after a ban was lifted on several oil fields in the province, increasing the total export of the crude to nearly 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) from previous 150,000 bpd.

Iraqi government's spokesperson Saad Hadisi described the visit as "a great beginning" and "an important step towards solving most of the financial problems between Erbil and Baghdad," in an earlier interview with Rudaw.

"This new step will become a starting point to implement the new deal and abide by it," he told Rudaw on August 30.

Earlier this year, Iraq's North Oil Company (NOC) halted the export from Kirkuk's three oil wells including Baba Gurgur, Khabaza and Jambouri on March 11 with an output of 150,000.

Under the terms of 2014 December agreement between Erbil and Baghdad, NOC will export only parts of its oil through Kurdish pipelines to the Turkish Ceyhan port in return for KRG administrating larger portions of the oil production in the province.

But according to the new arrangements, almost all produced oil in Kirkuk will be exported via Kurdistan pipeline with the revenues of 75000 bpd of the total of 300,000 bpd returned to the Iraqi ministry and the rest to the KRG.

Ansarullah’s Gazipur chief, another held
[Dhaka Tribune] Members of RAB 1 detained Gazipur district unit chief of banned turban outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team Rashedul Islam alias Swapan and his accomplice Biplob Hossain alias Huzaifa from Chaurasta area on Saturday morning.

At a press briefing at the RAB 1 office, Commanding Officer Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud said the duo worked in the garments industry. Later they became affiliated with AQIS (al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent) through one Abdul Quddus, a leader of Ansarullah’s Dhaka regional unit.

The duo later took oath to carry out jihad in the name of al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri

The RAB spokesperson said that the detainees admitted to hatching a plot to attack Kashimpur Jail in a bid to free turbans, including Ansarullah chief Jasim Uddin Rahmani. They also planned to snatch him on the way to court.

Two more Ansarullah members including a woman were also identified, RAB claims. The woman wanted to donate Tk10 lakh to buy arms for the group.

According to RAB, they all are followers of Tamim Al Adnani, one of the three top leaders of Ansarullah now staying in Malaysia.

The government banned Ansarullah on May 25 last year for their involvement in series of attacks on secularists and war crimes trial campaigners linked to the 2013 Shahbagh movement. After the ban, the group is renamed as Ansar Al Islam and believed to be representing AQIS in Bangladesh.

Pak diplomats fuelling militancy
[Dhaka Tribune] In the last two years, five foreign diplomats ‐ three Pak and two North Korean ‐ were asked to leave Bangladesh as they were found involved in criminal and anti-state activities including myrmidon financing

Due to such undiplomatic activities, those countries withdrew the officials.

Former Bangladeshi diplomats think the intelligence agencies should look into the matter seriously as such activities affect the country adversely.

In January last year, a Pak official named Mohammad Mazhar Khan was caught red handed from Banani with fake currency.

An intelligence report revealed that Mazhar was engaged in fake currency trading and he gave the earnings to different myrmidon outfits including Hizbut Tahrir
...an al-Qaeda recruiting organization banned in most countries. It calls for the reestablishment of the Caliphate...
, Ansarullah Bangla Team and Jamaat-Shibir for creating anarchy.

He was later released from police custody at the intervention of the Pakistain High Commission and the then first secretary of the high commission, Samina Mehtab, gave an undertaking for him.

The Foreign Ministry then asked the Pakistain mission to withdraw Mazhar and he was withdrawn accordingly.

Another Pakistain diplomat Fareena Arshad was asked to leave the country in December last year due to her involvement with myrmidon activities in Bangladesh. She was under intelligence radar for one year.

A member of banned outfit JMB, Idris Sheikh, gave a confessional statement at the court and mentioned that he had received money from Arshad.

Detectives later said that Idris Sheikh had been working as a spy for another country.

In February this year, another Pak official Abrar Ahmed Khan was nabbed
You have the right to remain silent...
in Gulshan area for his dubious movement in the area. He was later handed over to the Pakistain mission and asked to leave the country.

In August, a North Korean diplomat Han Sun Ik was asked to leave to country due to his involvement in smuggling.

Officials of the National Board of Revenue found a container full of cigarettes and electrical gazettes at the Kamalapur ICD. The consignment was imported in the name of the diplomat.

The NBR informed the Foreign Ministry about the matter, and the ministry later asked North Korea to withdraw him from the country.

In March last year, about 27kgs of gold was recovered from another North Korean diplomat, Sun Young, who came to Dhaka from Singapore. He was later released and asked to leave the country as per the Vienna convention.

When asked, former foreign secretary Faruk Ahmed Chowdhury told the Dhaka Tribune that the Pakistain was doing such type of thing with the help of people from different agencies or the police.

"In my long span of diplomatic career, I had rarely seen such type of activities. Pakistain is a member of Saarc and OIC. Such type of activities is not acceptable in Bangladesh."

Former ambassador Mohiuddin Ahmed said that such type of activities are exposed when two countries have bitter relationship, and Pakistain is doing it.

Mohiuddin, who is also a freedom fighter, said: "These are done to make a country weak. Our intelligence should be vigil in this regard and we must contain such activities."

The dignity of our nation
[Dhaka Tribune] It has become a common and notorious practice on part of the Pakistain government to condemn the execution of war criminals in Bangladesh.

The recent claim made by Pakistain that Bangladesh has violated the India-Pakistain-Bangladesh tripartite agreement, commonly known as the Delhi Agreement of 1973, by executing war criminals, is not justifiable under international law.

According to the principle of "universal jurisdiction" followed in international criminal law, no embargo can be imposed upon the trial of international crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, etc.

It means the trial for the accused of these crimes can take place any time by any country having competent jurisdiction. In line with that, Bangladesh in a post-war society enacted the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act in 1973. Though Bangladesh has only recently initiated the trial of the local collaborators after four decades of its independence, it is very unfortunate that we are yet to commence the trial of the Pak military officials.

Among other factors, many countries that were historically burdened with potential accusations of committing international crimes are quite eager to turn a blind eye and forego consideration of trying the Pak forces.

This poses a question: Why is it that whenever genocide or acts of brutality occur in the West, we see world leaders flying in to attend memorial services, and find expressions of solidarity pouring in from all over the world, but the issue of millions of Bengalis who were the victims of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in 1971 get considered "normal"?

I am not trying to underestimate the gravity of genocidal acts which have happened or are happening now in any part of the world.

Rather, I want to question the role of both the state machinery and the global community in failing to punish the primary perpetrators such as the Pak military forces.

Arguably, the war crimes trials are not only about punishing local collaborators over holding those Pak officials accountable. To quote Dr MA Hasan, convener of the War Crimes Facts Finding Committee: "The trial is never a question of vengeance but of restoring the dignity of a nation." How far have we been successful in this respect? It remains unanswered.

Why the trial of Pak officials did not take place for many years has been eloquently elucidated in the book The Bangladesh Military Coup and the CIA Link, written by BZ Khasru, in which the author sketches a political portrait of Pakistain-US alliance and diplomatic geo-strategy concerning Bangladesh’s Liberation War during and after 1971.

ISIS plotting to massacre Christians in Belgian shopping mall
[Jpost] The son of a radical Imam in Belgium has confessed to recruiting forces of Evil in order to carry out terror attacks.

ISIS forces of Evil are hatching a plot to butcher Christians in a shopping center with chainsaws, the son of a radical Imam told the Daily Mail.

The teenager from the city of Verviers, Belgium was nabbed
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
after a video of him walking in the street and calling for the murder of Christians in Arabic was released.

He is said to have revealed in a police interview that the terrorist organization is recruiting members in order to carry out a massacre in a shopping center using a chainsaw.

According to the Daily Mail, the Belgian newspaper 'La Derniere Heure' reported that the man, son of radical imam Shayh Alami, confessed that ISIS is recruiting lone wolves in Belgium.

The teenager said two planned attacks were to be staged at a shopping center, while another was against an Imam "not radical enough."

Theo Francken, the Belgian Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration, is working to deport the Imam as well as his son.

Francken said, "I already signed the order to remove the Imam from Belgian soil. But he appealed the decision, so I can only hope for a quick sentence. Clearly radicalism runs in the family."

Verviers as well as the Belgian suburb of Molenbeek, are well known to be breeding grounds for Islamists in Belgium according to Belgian media.

Germany says over 500 potential attackers currently in country
[IsraelTimes] Interior minister warns police are monitoring hundreds of people who could carry out jihadist terror attacks

Germany’s interior minister has warned his country is host to hundreds of potential Islamist Lions of Islam who could carry out attacks against the European nation.

Thomas de Maiziere told the Bild newspaper there were at least 520 potential attackers currently in the country, according to Rooters.

Another 360 people, he said, were also relevant targets for police due to their ties to potential terrorists.
Always good to have such things quantified, though that only covers the known knowns. We can assume another number less than 1.5 million of unknown knowns.
"The terror threat now stems from foreign hit teams as well as fanatical lone wolves in Germany," de Maiziere said.

"The hit teams are secretly smuggled into Europe and prepare their actions without being noticed, as we saw with the attacks in Gay Paree and Brussels," he said. "But it’s even more difficult to uncover the fanatical lone wolves. Unfortunately, there is a real and present danger from both threats."

Though counter-terrorism officials are monitoring and investigating all known potential assailants, "the authorities are assuming there are undiscovered lone wolf Lions of Islam out there."

2,300 migrants rescued in Mediterranean: Italian coastguard

[AlAhram] Around 2,300 migrants including many women and very young children were rescued from the Mediterranean on Saturday while on a perilous crossing to Italy, the Italian coastguard said.

The rescues follow a huge wave of migrants who arrived in Italy at the end of August, when more than 14,000 people were plucked to safety in the space of five days. Most of them were from sub-Saharan Africa.

According to Italy's interior ministry, about 124,500 migrants have arrived since the start of 2016, slightly lower than the 122,000 recorded last year.

Italy is sheltering growing numbers of would-be refugees as its neighbours to the north move to tighten their borders and make it harder for migrants to travel to their preferred destinations in northern Europe.

According to interior ministry figures this month, Italy now has 148,000 asylum-seekers in reception centres, compared with 103,000 in 2015 and 66,000 in 2014.

Romania police find 10 migrants hidden in truck

[AlAhram] Romanian border police have found 10 migrants, including two children, hidden in a truck transporting paper that was crossing the border into Romania from Bulgaria. A statement said that the migrants, nine Syrians and an Iraqi man, arrived at Romanian customs on Saturday morning.

The Bulgarian truck driver told border authorities he was transporting paper from Bulgaria to Germany. Police checked the vehicle and found the migrants hidden in the back of the truck next to pallets loaded with piles of paper.

Police said they paid 4,000 euros ($4,050) each for transport and were to be left in Vienna. The migrants and driver will be handed over to Bulgarian authorities.

China-Japan-Koreas
S. Korean media sound alarm over ‘nuclear maniac’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] South Korean newspapers sounded the alarm on Saturday over what one termed the "nuclear maniac" Kim Jong-Un, saying the North Korean leader’s fifth and biggest nuclear test is a game-changer demanding a tougher response.

One newspaper urged Seoul to persuade its ally Washington to redeploy tactical nuclear weapons withdrawn from South Korea in the early 1990s.

The Joongang Ilbo also urged China to cut off oil supplies to its ally and neighbor.

"High time for switching gear in nuclear deterrence against North," read its front-page headline.

Kim had "crossed the river of no return," it said in an editorial headlined "The North’s fifth nuclear test that expedites its own demise."

The banner headline of the top-selling Chosun Ilbo read "South Korea left unguarded before nuclear maniac."

Splashed below was a cartoon of Kim mounted on a galloping horse, his face distorted with anger and his hands clasping nuclear missiles.

In an editorial entitled "Counter-measures against the North’s nuclear program must change completely," Chosun said the North had been successful in its "nuclear gambling" but cracks had begun to appear inside its system.

"We must set up and actively pursue a strategy to isolate Kim Jong-Un and his clique from within and topple them," the conservative paper said.

The leftist Hankyoreh daily also said it "strongly condemns" the latest nuclear test.

But it said the repeated tests reflect a failure in the existing approach to the mounting crisis.

"There won’t be any solution in expressing anger to the North and keeping putting pressure on it. We must go beyond Cold War-style confrontation," it said.

"We must stop pinning our hopes on the unrealistic theory that the North is coming close to implosion. Instead, a new, comprehensive strategy is needed."

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, the little lost dog had finished eating the rat terrier...
the UN Security Council has agreed to start work at once on a new series of sanctions on North Korea after its fifth nuclear test drew global condemnation.

During a closed-door meeting on Friday, the council strongly condemned the test and agreed to begin drafting a new resolution under article 41 of the UN charter, which provides for sanctions.

"The members of the Security Council will begin to work immediately on appropriate measures under article 41 in a Security Council resolution," New Zealand’s Ambassador Gerard van Bohemen, who holds the council’s rotating presidency, told news hounds after the urgent talks.

South Korea, the United States, Japan, Russia and China all condemned the blast at the Punggye-ri nuclear site, the North’s most powerful yet at 10 kilotons.

In Seoul, dozens of protesters burned an effigy of the North’s leader Kim Jong-Un and North Korean flags and called for "strong retaliation", including pre-emptive attacks on the North’s nuclear complex.

"Eliminate Kim Jong-Un!" and "Destroy North Korea’s nuclear weapons!" the elderly activists shouted.

The Grand Turk
Turkey purge: 20,000 new policemen, more detentions and arrests
Turkey to recruit 20,000 new police in the coming period - minister
...none Gulenists, all loyal to Sultan Recip I "the much beloved"...
[Ynet] Turkey will recruit 20,000 new police officers in the coming period and will deploy half of them to special forces units, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told state-run broadcaster TRT on Friday.

Turkish authorities had announced they would strengthen the police force following a failed coup on July 15 in which rogue soldiers commandeered fighter jets and tanks in an attempt to overthrow the government.

He also said administrators would be appointed to 28 municipalities. Security officials and the state-run Anadolu agency on Thursday said the government was appointing administrators to replace member pro-Kurdish HDP opposition party because of alleged support for Kurdish militants.

Turkey jails businessmen, orders military officers detained: Media report

[AlAhram] Turkey jailed 16 businessmen pending trial on Thursday and issued arrest warrants for dozens of military officers over alleged links to the U.S.-based cleric blamed by Ankara for July's attempted coup, Turkish media said.

Authorities have already detained tens of thousands of people over links to the cleric, Fethullah Gulen, who denies any involvement in the failed putsch. The crackdown has alarmed Western allies and rights groups who fear a witch hunt. Turkish officials have rejected concern that their actions are too heavy-handed, pointing to the gravity of the coup plot.

Among those in custody was Faruk Gullu, owner of a chain of shops selling baklava, a traditional Turkish pastry. He is accused of belonging to what Ankara terms the "Gulenist Terrorist Organisation" (FETO), state-run Anadolu Agency said.

The Istanbul court was continuing to question 21 more businessmen, including Gullu's brother Nejat, who runs a rival chain of baklava shops, and leading clothing maker Omer Faruk Kavurmaci, the agency said.

They were among 80 suspects detained by police three weeks ago as part of the investigation. Of that number, 43 have been released subject to judicial monitoring, meaning they could still face prosecution.

Separately, Istanbul prosecutors issued detention orders for six generals, 43 other officers and some civilians in a police operation extending across 15 provinces, Anadolu reported. Four suspects have been detained so far, the agency said.

A day earlier, police detained three journalists, a politician and a pollster and issued arrest warrants for another 105 people over suspected links to Gulen.

Opposition politicians said the latest wave of arrests may target government critics with no clear links to the religious movement led by Gulen, whom Turkey wants extradited.

Several thousand soldiers have been expelled from the army and more than 100,000 people, including civil servants, bureaucrats, teachers, soldiers and journalists, have lost their jobs for alleged links with Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania since 1999.

President Tayyip Erdogan addressed concern about the handling of the purge in comments published on Wednesday, acknowledging the wrong people may sometimes be targeted and that media speculation about those involved may be misleading.

"They make comments (on TV) accusing people who have nothing to do with this business. But that person is stuck with that label. Such things are not right," he told reporters, according to Hurriyet newspaper.
