A Democratic megadonor told Colin Powell that Hillary Clinton "HATES" President Obama for beating her for the 2008 nomination, and she dismissively referred to him as "that man," according to emails hacked from the general’s account.
Corporate financier Jeffrey Leeds depicted Clinton as a sore loser set on revenge in the emails, which were obtained by The Intercept, and claimed Clinton is terrified she might lose again.
[The Cipher Brief] The man who was Edward Snowden’s boss when the National Security Agency (NSA) leaker fled the United States is now speaking out about his experiences and how to counter insider threats.
Steven Bay, who served as Snowden’s boss when he worked as a NSA contractor with Booz Allen Hamilton from April 1 to May 20, 2013, told The Cipher Brief he has decided to publicly discuss his brief time working with the NSA leaker to fill out a "gap in the history" and combat what he calls a wealth of "misinformation that’s out there."
Along with his recent departure from Booz Allen Hamilton, Bay said the release this week of Oliver Stone’s "Snowden" movie also served as a spur to discuss his time with Snowden.
Bay was speaking Tuesday at the Rock Stars of Cybersecurity conference in Seattle. Speaking to The Cipher Brief he detailed how companies can "protect themselves from both your average employee with no ill-intent as well as your malicious insider." As Snowden showed, Bay said, "the insider threat is real," and although it is rarer, a malicious actor working within a company has the potential to do "far more damage" than an external hacker.
"I wanted to not only be able to tell the story, but apply it to what companies can do to protect themselves," Bay said of his presentation on Tuesday. Businesses need to accept that they can never be totally protected from rogue employees, but Bay said he wanted to highlight that there are a few technical solutions that can help.
Digitally classifying data and tracking its movement, employing network monitoring and building rule sets that send alerts when classified data leaves the network, and blocking file sharing websites that are not specifically approved by the company are three ways to help deal with the challenge of an insider threat, according to Bay. Offering training programs and being open with employees about cybersecurity and malicious activity are also key to helping staffers stay vigilant, he noted.
Bay said he started his career with the Air Force, working as a Persian-Farsi linguist and network intelligence analyst through 2007. He then moved over to Booz Allen Hamilton as a contractor doing intelligence analysis for the NSA in Maryland until 2011, at which point he moved to Hawaii to lead the work there. During that time, he hired Snowden.
Bay said his official title was "lead associate," and he was a network intelligence analyst. There were about 10-13 people on his Booz Allen team in Hawaii, including Snowden, according to Bay, and "we were spread throughout the agency, the facility, with different NSA teams and missions, doing different work."
[PJ] Yesterday, two witnesses who worked for Platte River Networks, the Colorado-based firm that managed the Clinton server after Hillary left the State Department, pleaded the Fifth before the House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing titled "Examining Preservation of State Department Records."
In March of 2015, Paul Combetta and Bill Thornton deleted Clinton's archives even though they were aware of a court order and a congressional subpoena to preserve the records.
The House Oversight and Reform Committee on Tuesday released an email dated August 19, 2015, that was sent between Platte River Networks employees. The email expressed deep concern over the destruction of the records.
Republican Congressman Jim Jordan pulled up the email during the hearing and said it was from either Combetta or Thornton.
The email expressed a keen desire for documentation of Clinton's deletion requests and a sense that maybe they had bitten off more than they could chew when they won the contract to manage Clinton's server.
"Wondering how we can sneak an email in now after the fact asking them when they told us to cut the backups and have them confirm it for our records. Starting to think this whole thing is really covering up a lot of shaddy (sic) sh*t," the worried employee wrote.
Interim Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile warned against perusing the documents released in the latest DNC hack, alleging that they could have viruses which damage your computer. Sounds like Dem "leaders" either don't understand the magical, mysterious interwebs, or they believe their sycophants can't figure it out. Or both.
Brazile urged caution for anyone attempting to download the documents, "given the potential malware risks." At the same time, she said the hack was carried out by the Russians, particularly the infamous hacker Guccifer 2.0, the same hacker who released DNC documents right before the Democratic National Convention in July, leading to the resignation of Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Resignation? More like beatification.
The DNC is the victim of a crime -- an illegal cyberattack by Russian state-sponsored agents who seek to harm the Democratic Party and progressive groups in an effort to influence the presidential election," Brazile declared in a statement Tuesday. "We have been anticipating that an additional batch of documents stolen by Russian agents would be released." And as we all know, criminal behavior is only allowed by Dem leadership.

He's over 100 years old, but his sex life is the stuff of legend. Diego the Tortoise is quite the ladies' man, and his exploits have helped save his species from extinction.
Diego, a Galapagos giant tortoise, has fathered an estimated 800 offspring, almost single-handedly rebuilding the species' population on their native island, Espanola, the southernmost in the Galapagos Archipelago.
"He's a very sexually active male reproducer. He's contributed enormously to repopulating the island," said Washington Tapia, a tortoise preservation specialist at Galapagos National Park.
Diego is a Chelonoidis hoodensis, a species found in the wild only on Espanola.
The island is one of the oldest in the Galapagos, the Pacific archipelago made famous by Charles Darwin's studies of its breathtaking biodiversity.
Around 50 years ago, there were only two males and 12 females of Diego's species alive on Espanola, and they were too spread out to reproduce. Back when he was a young-un.
He has done more than any other tortoise to turn that around -- with the help of his mates, of course.
Diego lives at a tortoise breeding center on Santa Cruz Island, one of the largest in the Galapagos.
He is the dominant male of the three assigned to repopulate Espanola.
He shares his enclosure with six females, his partners in the task of saving their species. Given the way he behaves, he is either sneaky or can run pretty fast. For a tortoise.
Tough work, but some tortoise has to do it.

On a cloudy morning with chilly wind, Diego timidly peeks his head out from his thick shell, then slowly plods toward some leaves for breakfast.
"Look, look! He came out. How pretty," said a young girl as she looked on.
Diego weighs about 80 kilograms (175 pounds), is nearly 90 centimeters (35 inches) long and 1.5 meters (five feet) tall if he really stretches his legs and neck.
He has a mysterious, globe-trotting background to go with his reputation as a Casanova.
Diego was found at the San Diego Zoo -- hence his name -- after Chelonoidis hoodensis was identified as a species and an international campaign was launched to find more of the rare tortoises.
"We don't know exactly how or when he arrived in the United States. He must have been taken from Espanola sometime between 1900 and 1959 by a scientific expedition," said Tapia.
After being located at the zoo in California, Diego was brought back to the Galapagos in 1976 and put in the captive breeding program.

Little did scientists realize just how effective he was, until six years ago.
"We did a genetic study and we discovered that he was the father of nearly 40 percent of the offspring released into the wild on Espanola," Tapia told AFP.
In all, around 2,000 tortoises have been released on the small island. Thanks to the program, the species is no longer facing extinction.
"I wouldn't say (the species) is in perfect health, because historical records show there probably used to be more than 5,000 tortoises on the island. But it's a population that's in pretty good shape -- and growing, which is the most important," said Tapia.
Of the 15 species of giant tortoise known to have originated in the Galapagos, three have gone extinct -- victims of 18th-century pirates who plundered the islands' fragile ecosystem.
Diego's species has also been introduced on the island of Santa Fe, where a genetically similar one, Chelonoidis spp, disappeared more than 150 years ago.
Not all critically endangered tortoises rise to the challenge as Diego has.
Hopes for another threatened species, Chelonoidis abingdoni, faded when its last known survivor died in 2012 at more than 100 years old.
Known as Lonesome George, he had refused for years to breed in captivity.

Clinton said this at Georgetown University, which is fitting. Scheuer, who did not have to wait for our "grandson's lifetimes" to see just how much he got wrong, has parked himself where all who excel at denying Islam has any connection to violence have been congregating. He now teaches a future generation of "terrorism experts" at Georgetown.

The advantage Michelle has is she has 0 on her resume. Hillary has failures as Secretary of State and her vote for the war in Iraq that the Bernies hate her for.
If they were smart they'd do a Sanders/Michelle Obama ticket (with Sanders on top). They'd get the loony left and the African Americans and probably hold them together long enough to win.
It would be interesting to watch the #NeverTrump crowd in such a scenario.

[Free Beacon] The U.S. intelligence community declined to conduct a required assessment of the damage to national security caused by former secretary of state Hillary Clinton sending and receiving secrets on a private email server.
"ODNI is not leading an [intelligence community]-wide damage assessment and is not aware of any individual IC element conducting such formal assessments," Joel D. Melstad, a spokesman for the of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, said.
The most sensitive classified information leaked and possibly obtained by foreign intelligence services included ultra-secret information on U.S. drone strikes, according to American intelligence officials.
James Clapper, the director of national intelligence, agreed with security officials who argued against the need to carry out the damage assessment. Intelligence officials argued in internal discussions that since many details of the drone missile program targeting terrorists were disclosed in earlier leaks unrelated to Clinton’s use of a personal email server, gauging the damage done by her conduct would be difficult, and possibly unnecessary.
Melstad, the DNI spokesman, declined further comment when asked the reasons behind Clapper’s decision not to launch the damage assessment.
Other officials said Clapper’s decision appeared based on political considerations and was an effort to avoid embroiling American intelligence agencies in charges they were attempting to influence the outcome of Clinton’s bid for the White House.

ODNI is in a tough position. Setting aside accusations of political impact, revealing such an assessment tells everyone else loads about means and methods. By assessing they reveal just where they have penetrated systems of hostile groups - and where they haven't.

Keep in mind that after Snowden, it's virtually impossible to tell what effects the Clinton emails had vs the effect of his treason, both to Russia and to China.
The only way you could tell for certain is when a very specific use of very contemporary information was made in an unambiguous way. Putin uses cutout groups of every kind, including Wikileaks but also various underground info flows.

And as former NSA counterintel guy John Schindler notes, it's quite likely NSA has an active Russian mole.
That agency is heavily divided with firewalls all over the place between people/programs. To do the assessment would require breaching those firewalls big time. Not something you want to do in any case but especially not if you suspect you've been compromised somewhere inside.

The president rallied with Clinton supporters in Philadelphia and when doing so, managed to mention himself 137 times. At one point, after running down a list of what he considered accomplishments of his presidency, someone in the audience shouted out about lower gas prices.
"Thank you for reminding me," he replied. "Thanks, Obama," he said to himself.
He later took the opportunity to "vent" about the way the media is covering the campaign.
He ended, "The time has come for me to pass the baton on but I know Hillary is going to take it and she’s going to run that race and she will finish that race and that’s why I’m with her.
"That’s why I’m fired up. That’s why I’m ready to go. And I need you to join me," he continued. "I need you to work as hard for Hillary as you did for me. I need you to knock on doors. I need you to make phone calls."
After all the talk about himself, it was hard to determine whether he really wants Hillary to win, or if he would see her victory as a cornerstone in his own legacy.

[Jpost] The Obama Administration plans to increase the number of refugees admitted to the United States by 30 percent in fiscal year 2017, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited an annual refugee report submitted to Congress.
Secretary of State John Kerry presented the new target of 110,000 in the 2017 fiscal year starting Oct. 1, up from 85,000 in 2016, during a closed session to members of the House and Senate judiciary committees on Tuesday, according to the newspaper.
Kerry has said repeatedly over the past year that the United States would admit at least 100,000 refugees in fiscal 2017 and try to admit more if it were able. Helping Hillary get elected?

Testifying before the Senate Committee on Armed Services Tuesday, Navy Adm. Mike Rogers and Chairman John McCain engaged in a back-and-forth on how intelligence agencies can use data analyzing services like Dataminr to help detect terrorist attacks as they happen.
"ISIL (Islamic State) remains the most adaptive target I've worked in 35 years as an intelligence professional, sir," Rogers told McCain during his testimony.
McCain then queried the NSA chief on how Dataminr could be a tool to counter the adaptive threat posed by ISIS, citing how the company was able to inform U.S. intelligence agencies about last November's Paris attacks shortly after they began. More recently, Dataminr was also able to notify clients of the Brussels terrorist attacks 10 minutes before traditional media.

The Israeli Air Force struck cannons belonging to the Syrian regime late Tuesday evening in response to a number of mortar rounds that fell into the Golan Heights just hours earlier, according to a military statement.
"The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israel's illusory sovereignty and security of its citizens," the statement said, adding Israel holds the Syrian government responsible for any weapons launched into its territory.
Three mortar shells from Syria landed on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights Tuesday afternoon, within the span of an hour, after a rare overnight incident in which the Syrian Army fired two surface-to-air missiles at Israeli Air Force aircraft.
No damage or injuries were reported in the incidents.
A military source stated that the mortar fire was likely accidental spillover from battles between Assad regime forces and rebels in Syria's civil war.
This is the seventh incident of Syrian mortars landing in Israeli territory in the past ten days. The IDF has responded to such spillover. even if it was expected to be accidental, with attacks against Syrian Army positions

A PLOT to nail bomb crowds at an Elton John gig and at Buckingham Palace would have been on the scale of 7/7, a court heard yesterday.
Student Haroon Ali Syed’s terror plan was allegedly inspired by IS and is also said to have targeted London’s busy Oxford Street and military bases. The 19-year-old allegedly intended to strike at a concert by Sir Elton in London’s Hyde Park on the anniversary of 9/11. Police believe he originally planned to be a jacket wallah, and wanted to buy machine guns or pistols to carry out a "lone wolf" killing spree.
Prosecutor Thomas Halpin told Westminster magistrates’ court: "It is alleged Haroon Syed was planning a terrorist attack in the UK.
"This defendant was attempting to carry out a terror attack on the scale of 7/7 or something like that."
He allegedly discussed his plans online before meeting a man at a shopping centre with £150 to pay a bomb maker. Cops believe he planned to set off a bomb with a remote timer.
Syed claimed he knew a number of people who were willing to help carry out the attack, although none have emerged.
The gangly student only spoke to confirm his name, date of birth and address. During a 15-minute hearing he fiddled with his thin beard and appeared to smirk as details of the allegations against him were made by Mr Halpin.
The prosecutor said: "What started out as professed intent to become a suicide bomber crystallised into a plan to kill as many ’Kuffar’ (unbelievers) as possible with a nail bomb."
Syed allegedly made a number of applications for loans worth £8,000 to finance the attack but all were declined. Last month it is believed he applied for the money online, variously claiming it was for a cycle of violence, a wedding and home improvements.
It is claimed he spent most of the month watching IS beheading videos and propaganda before settling on his target.
Syed, of Hounslow, West London, is charged with preparing acts of terrorism between April 12 and September 9, contrary to section five of the Terrorism Act 2006.
The former IT student at West Thames College was arrested last Thursday at his home, along with two other men who have since been released on police bail pending investigations.
His solicitor Tony Lodge indicated a bail application would be made in the future but did not argue the case in court. The judge told Syed he would be remanded in jug until the next hearing at the Old Bailey on September 19.

The August 30 air strike was conducted by a Predator drone, which fired a Hellfire missile at the car Adnani was traveling in.
Officials say Adnani was the main front man for IS, and he had played a major role during some of the group’s most high-profile attacks over the past year, including in Gay Paree, at the Brussels and Istanbul airports, at a cafe in Bangladesh, as well as the downing of a Russian airliner in the Sinai and suicide kabooms at a rally in Ankara.
Cook has previously said Adnani had coordinated the movement of IS fighters, encouraged lone-wolf attacks on civilians and members of the military and actively recruited new IS members.
Soon after the strike against Adnani, Russia said it was responsible for his death, a claim Pentagon officials dismissed as a "joke."

[YNAIJA] The Nigerian Prisons Service on Tuesday said the criminal mastermind of the 2011 Christmas day bombing in Abuja, Kabiru Dikko is till in prison, contrary to reports that he has been released.
There had been reports going around about his release from prison.
But the prisons spokesperson, Bayo Jeje while speaking to Premium Times confirmed that the convict was still serving his jail term.
"Please disregard the rumour. He’s still in prisons custody," he said.
"There’s no truth in all" the reports claiming that Mr. Dikko had been released," he further said.
Dikko also known as Kabiru Sokoto was sentenced to lifeimprisonment in December 2013 after he was found guilty of criminal masterminding the boom-mobileing on St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, near Abuja, which claimed the lives of about 40 persons.

The imprisoned US soldier Chelsea Manning has ended a hunger strike after the army said she would be allowed to receive gender transition surgery, the American Civil Liberties Union has announced.
Manning, 28, who is serving a 35-year prison term for passing classified files to WikiLeaks, began the hunger strike on Friday.
Manning’s treatment would begin with the surgery that was recommended by her psychologist in April, said the ACLU, which represented Manning, who is held in Kansas.
Manning criticised the government in a statement for taking “so long” but said: “I am unendingly relieved that the military is finally doing the right thing. I applaud them for that. This is all that I wanted – for them to let me be me.
The army private formerly known as Bradley Manning revealed after being convicted of espionage that she identified as a woman.
No transgender inmate had ever before received such surgical treatment in prison, the ACLU said.
Manning in July attempted suicide over what her representatives said was the government’s denial of appropriate treatment for her gender dysphoria, a condition in which a person feels their physical gender is the opposite of the one he or she identifies with.
The army announced later that month that it would investigate Manning for misconduct in connection with the attempt to take her own life, a probe that could lead to indefinite solitary confinement, reclassification into maximum security or additional prison time.
According to Manning’s representatives, doctors have recommended that as part of her treatment for gender dysphoria the soldier, who began hormone therapy in 2015, be allowed to follow “female hair grooming standards”.
ACLU staff attorney Chase Strangio said in Tuesday’s statement that the government planned to still enforce the male hair standards.
Manning, a former intelligence analyst in Iraq, was sentenced in 2013 to 35 years in prison after a military court conviction of providing more than 700,000 documents, videos, diplomatic cables and battlefield accounts to the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks. The case ranked as the biggest breach of classified materials in US history.
Among the files Manning leaked in 2010 was a gunsight video of a US Apache helicopter firing on suspected Iraqi insurgents in 2007, an attack that killed a dozen people including two Reuters news staff.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least 22 Indian nationals who went missing earlier this year have reportedly joined the loyalists of the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. According to local media reports citing security sources the 22 individuals joined the loyalists of the terror group in the first of July.
The sources further added that the revelation was made during the interrogation of an Indian woman, 29-year-old Yasmin, who was jugged ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... by the authorities from New Delhi airport earlier last month.
According to Yasmin thirteen of the missing Keralites were men, six women and three children, and "they had left their houses in Kasaragod and Palakkad districts of Kerala between mid-May and the first week of July."
A National Investigation Agency (NIA) official, close to the investigation, told IANS that all of the missing Keralites had "exited India from Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Mumbai airports for Kuwait, Dubai, Muscat or Abu Dhabi from where they are learnt to have traveled to Afghanistan through Iran."
This comes as the loyalists of ISIS terrorist group in Afghanistan have been attempting to expand foothold in the country.
The coalition officials had earlier said the loyalists of the terror group have managed to consolidate operations with the main group based in Iraq and Syria as they attempted to establish a regional operational base in eastern Nangarhar The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country.. province of Afghanistan.

For some reason the title set me to thinking about Agatha Christie.
[DAWN] The Cultural Revolution came to an end in 1976 with Mao’s demise but by then the book had already been translated into over 20 languages in 117 countries.
The book was a consequence of a power tussle in the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC). On the one side of the wrangle were pragmatists who had criticised some of Mao’s sweeping economic policies which had caused famine and mass starvation in China’s countryside. On the other end of the tussle were those who had accused the ’lingering presence of the bourgeoisie and feudal mindset in the country’ for ’sabotaging’ Mao’s communist initiatives.
Mao was the main ideologue and architect of China’s 1949 communist revolution. But in 1960 during a large CPC convention he was almost sidelined by the party. However by 1962 he had managed to return to the fore and regain control of the CPC. He launched a purge and ousted hundreds of CPC members who he believed were ’counter-revolutionaries’. It was during this period that the Little Red Book first appeared.
The book contains hundreds of quotes culled from Mao’s writings, lectures and speeches. These quotes cover various ideological, economic and social issues, commented on by Mao in the framework of how he understood Marxism-Leninism in the context of Chinese culture and polity, and also of the revolution in general.
In 1966 during a session of the CPC supporters of Mao insisted that counter-revolutionaries had infiltrated the party and state institutions. They said that the only way to identify them was through ’the telescope and microscope of the Mao Tse-tung thought.’
It was decided that a cultural revolution will be launched to completely eradicate the ’counter-revolutionary mindset’. Soon after, Mao and his supporters willingly allowed large groups of young Chinese students and youth to begin undermining the authority of state institutions and enact an anarchic and fanatical reign of terror in which teachers, professors, doctors, actors, authors, civil servants and sometimes even one’s own parents were beaten up and publicly humiliated by gangs of youth. These young Chinese went around doing this while profusely mouthing quotes from the book.
Millions of Chinese men and women perished in the chaos. All of them were accused of being counter-revolutionaries after being tried in spontaneous ’peoples courts’ through ’the telescope and the microscope of the Mao Tse-tung Thought’ (basically the Little Red Book).
China plunged into anarchy. But it was madness engineered from the top of the CPC hierarchy where Mao sat navigating the cleansing of the Chinese society.
Once he was able to use the chaos to oust his possible rivals in the party and drown the memory of his disastrous economic policies, he suddenly brought in the powerful Chinese military and sent thousands of his fanatical followers to the countryside to work on farms. Thus the Cultural Revolution began to lose its intensity from the early 1970s and came to a complete halt when Mao passed away in 1976.
By 1980, leaders damned and ousted by the Cultural Revolution were brought back into the party fold. The Little Red Book that had fuelled the imagination and ambitions of so many revolutionaries in the 1960s and 1970s came to be seen as a lethal instrument of propaganda and after the end of the Cold War, a curious ideological artefact of a bygone age.
In Pakistain, the book had first arrived in 1967. It was translated into Urdu and thousands of copies were distributed by the Chinese embassy between 1968 and 1973.
What I have with me is an English version of the book but which was printed in China in 1966. A late friend of mine, Irfan Malik, had gifted it to me in 1986, when both of us were young Marxist pretenders.
The book belonged to Irfan’s father who bought it in 1966 after a trip to China. Since his father had gone on to become a successful businessman, Irfan believed that the book would look better sitting on my bookshelf!
The book was initially inspired by History of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, a propaganda textbook that was widely published and distributed in the Soviet Union in the 1940s. It was largely based on the thoughts and theories of Soviet communist dictator, Joseph Stalin. It was also translated into Chinese and a copy of it had landed in the hands of Mao while he was leading communist forces in pre-Revolution China. Though the publication of the book was halted after Stalin’s death in 1953, it was kept in circulation in China by Mao.
The Little Red Book in turn inspired Libyan dictator Muammar Qadaffy ...a reminder that a single man with an idea can change an entire nation, usually for the worse... to author his Green Book in 1975 in which he presented his theories on Islam and Socialism. Just as the Red Book had become compulsory reading in China (till 1976), Qadaffy’s book became compulsory reading in Libya. In fact it remained so till the fall of his regime in 2011.
In 1974 the PPP published Quotations of Chairman Bhutto, a book containing quotes of Z.A. Bhutto on democracy, socialism and Pak nationalism. I have this book too but I don’t think it would fetch 13,000 dollars today.
A colleague of mine advised me to put my copy of the Red Book for sale on eBay. I told him I found that to be a rather distasteful idea. But only until he emailed me a picture of a portrait of Mao nonchalantly hanging inside a McDonald’s restaurant in Beijing. Oh, well, in that case ...

The women were detained last week after the discovery of the vehicle near Notre Dame on September 4. Police believe they were planning other attacks including striking a train station in the Gay Paree area or targeting police.
The suspects -- named as 19-year-old Ines Madani, 23-year-old Sarah Hervouet and 39-year-old Amel Sakaou -- were brought before anti-terrorism judges on Monday and charged with involvement in a terrorist conspiracy. The two youngest were also charged with plotting to kill public officials, while Hervouet's boyfriend was charged with failing to report a terrorist offense, a statement said.
Sources close to the investigation said the women had discussed obtaining suicide belts or ramming cars filled with explosives into buildings.
One of them was found in possession of a letter professing her allegiance to IS, which ordered the carnage in Gay Paree in November that left 130 people dead.
A 15-year-old boy arrested in eastern Gay Paree at the weekend was also brought before investigating magistrates on Monday to be charged with conspiring to commit attacks. The youth had written to contacts on Telegram -- an encrypted messaging app widely used by jihadists to communicate -- of his plans to carry out a knife attack, sources said.

The women were arrested after police were alerted to a Peugeot 607 car parked near the Notre Dame cathedral in the middle of one of Gay Paree's busiest tourist spots on September 4. It was found to contain five gas cylinders, three bottles of diesel and a half-smoked cigarette inside.
A fourth woman, Ornella Gilligmann, who has been charged with terrorism over the find, told police she and Madani had tried to set the vehicle alight but fled when they saw a man they believed to be a police officer approach.
Investigators moved quickly to arrest her suspected accomplices, believing them to be on the cusp of staging an attack.
During their arrest in the southern Gay Paree suburb of Essonne, Hervouet stabbed a policeman, injuring him in the shoulder. Madani was shot in the leg after she also charged at an officer with a knife.
Both were known to police for their links to Islamist radicals.
A police search of one of the women's homes found seven empty glass bottles and pieces of paper that "could look like paper fuses" but no explosives.

The case has highlighted the possible role of 29-year-old IS member Rachid Kassim, a Frenchie thought to have links to a string of attacks and plotters. Police believe he is directing jihadists over Telegram.
Kassim has regularly appeared in IS propaganda videos shot in Syria or Iraq. He is said to have been in contact with Madani and the 15-year-old boy arrested in eastern Gay Paree at the weekend.

[DAWN] A CONSPIRACY theory claims the mainstream account of a major incident is deliberately misleading and that the incident was actually planned by powerful forces to undermine common people’s interests.
The key difference between unearthing a conspiracy, eg, Watergate, and a conspiracy theory is evidence. In the former, brave souls take much risk to collect evidence ultimately accepted by authorities. But the latter are the result of armchair analysis and never produce concrete evidence.
Rather, conspiracy theories thrive on finding minor gaps in mainstream accounts, blowing them out of proportion to claim they are false and providing an alternative conspiracy-based account. They rely on raising doubts that go beyond the realms of reasonable doubt.
Ironically, while subjecting mainstream accounts to endless tests of logic and evidence, conspiracy theorists fail to subject their own account to the same rigour. Finding minor anomalies in mainstream accounts is seen as sufficient by itself to not only disprove it but to also automatically prove alternative accounts. Such theories rely heavily on motivational analysis by claiming that if an entity benefits significantly from a negative incident this in itself is sufficient proof that it must have caused it. This is like arguing that if a husband inherits the wealth of a murdered woman he should be convicted for her murder without the need for further evidence!
But why do so many people become conspiracy theorists? Firstly, claiming to have inside news absent in mainstream media helps people project importance and smartness. Secondly, for powerless people smarting from the unfairness of daily lives, spreading conspiracy theories helps in relieving anger.
However, ars longa, vita brevis... individual needs may not be the most important causes behind conspiracy theories today. They also serve powerful institutional interests. Thus, many such theories are deliberately spread by national spy agencies to further national security and foreign policies, as common in Pakistain and many other places. Fortunately for conspiracy theorists, analytical skills are so weak among so many even educated people that they blindly accept conspiracy theories without reviewing the evidence against mainstream, and for alternative, accounts. Such theories find a ready audience since they claim to reveal the hidden agendas of powerful, evil forces working against weaker people.
Thus, they have a certain populist appeal for people living under unfair political systems. They create the illusion of empowering common people, for unearthing hidden agendas could become the basis for ultimately defeating them. Finally, conspiracy theories also liven up social events by providing fun stories full of intrigue to discuss as a way of digesting a heavy meal.
These antecedents are vividly on display in the mother of all conspiracy theories in recent times, ie, the 9/11 one which continues to thrive even on the 15th anniversary of 9/11. There are various versions of it, some blaming CIA, some Israel, some both; others portraying Al Qaeda as a US pawn.
Thus, the first giveaway clue of a conspiracy theory is the lack of a clear, consistent and coherent story. The theory claims to rely on expert opinion that flying planes cannot destroy massive structures like the World Trade Centre. But who the experts are is rarely revealed.
Probing often reveals that the expert is the nephew of the friend of an uncle who is into constructing small plazas. But skyscraper construction and demolition is such a specialised field that even many qualified civil engineers may not know about it sufficiently to disprove the mainstream 9/11 account, let alone builders of small plazas. I have yet to see a detailed, quantitative treatise which conclusively disproves the mainstream 9/11 account.
Finally, the theory relies on irrelevant motivational analysis by pointing to the massive increase in US power globally after 9/11 and its attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq. It defies logic to say that the US, a global hegemon which has repeatedly attacked smaller countries without provocation, would suddenly have to kill 3,000 of its citizens, that too Wall Street elites, to justify attacking others.
Such faulty logic leads to the ridiculous conclusion that the army arranged the APS attack since its powers have increased so much since then. Ironically, the massive recent leaks the US has suffered have unearthed no clues related to the supposed 9/11 conspiracy!

[ALMASDARNEWS] A Chechen jihadist group known as "Jund al-Sham" announced on Tuesday that their forces are participating in the rebel offensive in the northern Hama countryside.
Jund al-Sham originally operated in the Kurdish Mountains (Jabal al-Akrad) of northern Latakia and Jisr Shughour area of Idlib; however, the recent losses in the rebel ranks has forced them to come to the aid of their allies.
In the statement released on Tuesday, Jund al-Sham admitted they played a role in the capture of Kawkab, a key town in the northern Hama countryside that the rebels were not able to capture until recently.
The leader of this jihadist group is Murad Margoshvili (AKA "Moslem Abu Walid al-Shishani"), who is internationally sanctioned for his terrorist activities.

She was carrying an bomb which went kaboom!, killing her instantly and causing minor injury on two soldiers and a Civilian JTF assisting them.
Usman said the injured soldiers and the civilian were treated and have since continued with their duties.
He said the incident had shown that a few of the remaining turbans were determined to carry out criminal acts to create panic and insecurity in some areas.
Usman added that there was reliable information that remnants of the Boko Haram ... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality... forces of Evil now disguised as mad men or women in order to gain access to some locations, especially in Maiduguri.
"Consequently, all should be very wary of any seemingly mentally unstable or mad men or women found wandering and report same. Therefore, it is imperative for all to be more security conscious and vigilant, especially during the Eid festivities and public holidays," Usman added.

Turkey's state-run news agency says the Justice Ministry has sent the United States its first formal request demanding the arrest of the alleged mastermind of July's abortive coup.

Justice Ministry officials told Anadolu the written request sent to counterparts in Washington alleged the Pennsylvania-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen "gave the orders and commanded" the violent coup that killed over 270 people. Gulen denies any involvement. He is obviously seen as an 'Islamic moderate' with extensive regional contacts. I'd be surprised if he were handed over. If he's extradited, his entire network will likely be rolled up and in short order. Could be very embarrassing for his handlers, and create long-term regional intelligence gaps.
Turkish officials have been informally demanding the cleric's arrest and extradition for weeks.
If Erdogan follows the Soviet model, there will be a show-trial followed by an execution. If he follows the Ottoman model, there will be an execution...
During a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden in August, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "As per the extradition agreement between the U.S. and Turkey, these types of people should at least be detained, arrested and kept under surveillance. Yet that individual is still directing his terrorist organization from his whereabouts."

Potentially, Gulen is the Elian Gonzalez of the Obama regime.
[RUDAW.NET] At least three people were killed and 15 maimed by a two kabooms in the Iraqi capital on Tuesday.
The first attack was in Baghdad’s northern area and the second in the south.
"An bombwent kaboom! this morning close to commercial buildings in the Adhamiyah district of northern Baghdad, which led to the death of one person and injured seven others whose wounds vary," a security source from the interior ministry said in a press statement after the first kaboom.
The second kaboom shook the Mahmoudiya neighborhood, which killed two people and maimed eight.

(Army of Islam) violated the ceasefire agreement on Tuesday afternoon to launch a new offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus.
The Islamist group began the assault by storming the Syrian Arab Army's defenses at the al-Riyhan Farms; this would result in a series of intense firefights that would last until midnight.
Despite their best efforts to infiltrate the Syrian Arab Army's defenses, Jaish al-Islam was forced to retreat after sustaining significant casualties during the intense battle on Tuesday night.
According to an al-Masdar News correspondent in Damascus, Jaish al-Islam suffered over 20 casualties during the failed assault, while the Syrian Arab Army's 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard only reported 3 deaths.

The mission was carried out under the cover of darkness - once light broke and ISIS fighters were observed near the IED's, the SAA detonated the bombs, killing at least 20 ISIS murderous Moslems and injuring scores more in the process.
Jabal Thardah is still contested between ISIS and the SAA; the embattled mountain represents the highest point in all of Deir Ezzor, thus giving it significant strategic importance for both sides.

[ALMASDARNEWS] Colonel Sergei Kopitsyn, a representative of the Russian center for reconciliation of the warring parties in Aleppo, reported that six people were killed and ten more were maimed in Syria’s Aleppo overnight as the so-called "moderate" opposition violated the ceasefire regime.
"After the regime of cessation of hostilities came into force, five violations of ceasefire by moderate opposition were reported in the city of Aleppo during the night.
As a result, six people were killed and ten more maimed," he said during a videoconference with Russia’s national defense management center.
According to Kopitsyn, sniper fire was opened at positions of the Republican Guard near Hai Zahrat Awad late on September 12.
Apart from that, living quarters in the settlement of Hai al-Ansari came under mortar shelling. Positions of the Syrian army were shelled from anti-tank guided missile systems from the Sheikh Said neighborhood.
The center’s representative also said that Kurdish self-defense forces in the Shkeif district came under shelling by moderate opposition from heavy machineguns and firearms.
"Positions of government troops in Braij al-Rih were shelled from Zu-23 multiple missile launcher systems from midnight to 01:00 a.m.," he added.

Citing "unknown reasons," the opposition activists in the Deir Ezzor Governorate claimed that Maysar al-Kalizi and Anas al-Abdon were summarily executed by the Islamic State's security branch.
Last month, the Islamic State executed one of their top commanders in the Deir Ezzor Governorate, claiming battlefield performance as the reason behind their decision.
Recently, the Islamic State has launched a number of offensives in the Deir Ezzor Governorate; however, they have all failed to yield any significant progress, despite the high cost of military personnel.

[IsraelTimes] A Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, operative was picked up by the navy last month for attempting to smuggle kabooms from Egypt into the Gazoo Strip, the Shin Bet security service announces.
Khamis Jihad Said Ara’ish, 24, told interrogators he had been involved in a number of smuggling efforts since 2012 that brought materials into the Strip for the purpose of manufacturing weapons for Hamas, the Shin Bet says.

Ara’ishi and "his associates" had previously attempted to smuggle kabooms into Gazoo in April, but were prevented from doing so by the navy, the Shin Bet says.
A smuggling attempt that Ara’ishi planned to carry out around the time he was picked up was prevented with his arrest, the agency says.
During his interrogation, Ara’ishi told Sherlocks he had also tried to carry out an attack against IDF troops in 2014, "performing lookouts and purchasing weaponry in order to get a promotion," the agency says.
"The information that came up in the investigation, along with the investigations of other recently arrested Hamas terrorist operatives, revealed more of the efforts made by Hamas for progressing its violent terrorist activities, this time by taking advantage of the easing of restrictions that Israel has allowed for Gazook fishermen," the Shin Bet says.

Peshmerga on the frontlines with ISIS have suffered multiple chemical weapons attacks by ISIS. They however lack proper equipment to protect from such attacks.
"We are fighting on one of the most active fronts of this war, and we don’t have much protection against chemical attacks," he said. "We don’t have too many masks and no body suits at all to protect from such attacks," Rebin Rojbayani, a Peshmerga commander on the Makhmour-Gwer front told Rudaw in April.
"There aren’t really even any proper medicines to use when we are attacked," he lamented.
Harrigian described ISIS’ use of chemical weapons as "just another example of ISIS’s [ISIS] blatant disregard for international law and norms."

[DAWN] LAHORE: A man allegedly strangled his wife for ’honour’ in Gujjarpura early on Monday.
Police claimed Abubakar of Karol Ghatti exchanged harsh words with his wife late on Sunday over suspicion she had a relationship with a neighbour. He later strangled her with a rope.
On Monday morning, Abubakar bundled his wife’s body into an auto rickshaw and planned to throw it into the BRB Canal with the connivance of a friend.
As soon as the men reached near a police checkpost at Manawan they got terrified and fled from the scene leaving the rickshaw behind.
Police claimed they shifted the body to morgue for an appointment with Dr. Quincy and placed in durance vile You have the right to remain silent... both Abubakar and his friend a few hours later.
A murder case was registered against them.

[DAWN] At least two police officials were killed and 10 other people were maimed in a blast near a police training centre on Quetta's Sariab road on Tuesday as the nation celebrates Eidul Azha.
Militants were targeting a police patrol vehicle in the area, police sources said.
The kaboom left two security officials dead and 10 others injured, security sources added. Five of the injured are security officials.
Bomb Disposal Squad officials said the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was remotely detonated, and contained two to three kilograms of explosives.
Paramedics reached the site of the attack and rushed the injured to Civil Hospital Quetta for treatment.
Security has been beefed up in the area after the blast. A cordon has also been established around the area to start initial forensic investigation and to control movement.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Sariab road is considered to be one of the sensitive areas of Quetta. Militants have been targeting security forces in the area for almost a decade.

The US will will give the Israeli military $38bn over the next decade in what Washington described as the biggest package of military assistance in its history.
The military deal which will be signed in Washington on Wednesday includes an estimated $5bn for missile defence. Under the previous deal, the US provided Israel with $30bn over a 10-year period, although the actual funds delivered over that time period were about $35bn as Israel sought additional funds from the US Congress. Congress had previously funded Israel’s missile defence spending.

Under the new deal, Israel would not be able to solicit extra money from Capitol Hill. In other conditions placed on the new memorandum of understanding, Israel would no longer be allowed to spend over a quarter of the military aid on home-produced weaponry, and would instead be required the full amount on US arms. Nor would it be able to spend any of the aid on fuel for its armed forces.
Disagreements over these limitations delayed completion of the new deal, which has been under negotiation for 10 months.
Talks were also prolonged when the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, suspended discussions in protest at a nuclear deal the US and other major powers agreed with Iran last July.
Netanyahu had asked for a total of $45bn, and floated the idea of waiting to seal the agreement until a new president was in office, but in the end opted to make a deal with the Obama administration that was anxious to secure its legacy and combat accusations that its foreign policy had been detrimental to Israel.
Hate to say it but I think Bibi made the right call here: if Hillary wins (and survives) aid to Israel almost certainly will become more difficult.

[AlManar] Two huge US strategic bombers flew over South Korea on Tuesday in a show of force against North Korea following Pyongyang’s fifth and largest-ever nuclear test.
The supersonic B-1B Lancers reached airspace over the US Osan Air Base at Pyeongtaek, 64 kilometres (40 miles) south of Seoul, at around 10:00 am (0100 GMT).
Each aircraft, which had flown from the US Pacific Command’s Andersen Airforce base at Guam, was escorted by US and South Korean fighter jets.
“Today’s demonstration provides just one example of the full range of military capabilities in the deep resources of this strong alliance to provide and strengthen extended deterrence”, said General Vincent Brooks, US-South Korea Combined Forces Command.
“North Korea’s nuclear test is a dangerous escalation and poses an unacceptable threat,” said the general, adding the US has an “unshakable commitment” to defend allies in the region.
The US “will take necessary steps to do so, including operations like this one today, and the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD)
battery to the Korean Peninsula,” he said.
South Korea in July announced plans to deploy THAAD, a sophisticated US missile defence system, to counter growing nuclear and missile threats from the North.
But China, which believes the system’s radar could also be used to track its own defences, objected strongly. The plan has also met resistance from residents of the southern county of Seongju, the planned site.
South Korean opposition parties oppose the THAAD deployment, insisting it could escalate a regional arms race and hurt ties with China.
They also say its usefulness against the North’s military threats is doubtful.
Tuesday’s overflight was “aimed at sending a clear warning to North Korea about its nuclear test, and containing further provocations,” South Korea’s defence ministry spokesman Moon Sang-Gyun told journalists.
Washington took similar actions after previous atomic tests.
In January, the US flew a B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber over Osan Air Base after North Korea’s fourth nuclear blast.
South Korea is home to around 28,500 US troops and numerous bases.

All of which are expendable to pols and bureaucrats who don't want to do what everyone knows needs to be done. Your frontline troops will find out about the war when the SCUDS are impacting their compounds before anyone will tell them its coming. Back in '88 it took 2 days to get Camp Casey out of the compound because the two front gates lead to a 2 lane road. There is no back gate, it leads to a dead end draw which you can't get vehicles out of.
Badakhshan officials said on Tuesday that Taliban has seized security forces' equipment and weapons in the province and are now using these against government troops.
Badakhshan provincial governor said that in the past year, the Taliban has managed to seize the equipment, including light and heavy weapons as well as armored vehicles – which has become an increasing problem for security forces.
"In 2015 a number of Afghan forces' armored vehicles were seized by the enemy in Wardoj, Jurm and Yamgan valley and there is no doubt that those vehicles need to be destroyed so that they cannot be used against them (troops)," said Faisal Bigzad, the provincial governor.
Bigzad has urged foreign forces to help them destroy this equipment.
"We have asked the ministry of defense and Resolute Support to destroy these vehicles," Bigzad said.
Meanwhile former Afghan spy chief Rahmatullah Nabi said that just in the past two months more than 200 vehicles belonging to the Afghan security forces have been seized by the Taliban.
"We lost 200 Humvees and Rangers in two or three months as the result of incompetence. Imagine what has happened to the people in those two or three months," said Nabil.
Meanwhile Badakhshan civil society activists welcomed the governor's call for the destruction of equipment.
"When government takes a resolute decision and especially when NATO gets involved, I am sure the strongholds that the Taliban has built will not be strong enough to destroy," said Shir Ali Qasimi, a civil society activist.
Currently, the Taliban controls much of Wardoj and Yamgan districts and are widely active in eleven other districts in the province.

SHIKARPUR: At least 13 people, including five cops, were injured as police foiled two separate suicide blasts during Eid prayers in Shikarpur's Khanpur tehsil on Monday.
Police sources said four suicide attackers infiltrated Khanpur during Eid prayers.
Two of the attackers targeted an Eid prayer ground where one assailant blew himself up, injuring 10 people, two of whom were policemen. The other attacker fled, police sources said.
Two other attackers targeted an imambargah but were stopped by police at the entrance on account of appearing suspicious. One of the attackers blew himself up after he was stopped by guards for a search, whereas the other was arrested, police said.
Police officer Bahardin Kerio said the second attacker, a would-be suicide bomber, was shot and wounded at the scene, after which the officers arrested him.
Three police officers were wounded in the explosion. Kerio said one of the wounded officers was in critical condition.
He added that there were hundreds of worshippers inside the imambargah at the time.
Those injured in the blast have been admitted to hospitals in Shikarpur for treatment.
Initial interrogation of the arrested attacker, Usman, revealed that the would-be bomber was a resident of Swat's Qabal tehsil and had studied in Karachi's Abu Huraira seminary, police sources said.
The sources added that a person named Umer brought the attackers to the imambargah on a motorbike and fled after leaving them there.
Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh AD Khawaja reached Shikarpur following the incident. The IGP told Dawn that the attackers hailed from Swat but were based in Karachi and possibly had links to a seminary there which are currently being investigated.
Following the incident local leaders in Shikarpur led a protest against the attack. The IGP told protesters the police would investigate the case and requested them to lift the blockade.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
A war for oil, as only the US can prosecute it..
[ARA News] ERBIL – The US-led coalition destroyed more than 110 oil tanker trucks for the Islamic State (ISIS) radical group in one week, Lieutenant General Jeffrey Harrigian, head of the U.S. Air Forces Central Command, said on Tuesday.
“Last week alone, we destroyed more than 110 [ISIS] oil tanker trucks,” the coalition general said. “In September, coalition aircraft also destroyed 42 tanker trucks in the vicinity of Raqqa [ISIS de facto capital].”
“This war requires increased persistence and ability to remain vigilant in efforts to capitalize on Daesh’s tactical errors, as we have done with several of the recent large oil tanker strikes in a large VBIED production facility in Mosul,” Harrigian said, using another acronym for ISIS.
According to the head of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, ISIS is using innocent civilians as shields. “Daesh fled Manbij, hiding among the civilian populace,” he said.
The US commander said they will continue airstrikes while they move towards Mosul and Raqqa –major ISIS bastions in Iraq and Syria.
“Using the complement of airpower available to us, we will continue to deliver more destruction to Daesh’s command-and-control than they can absorb,” the coalition general said
“We have gathered lessons from Manbij [former ISIS border pocket liberated recently by the coalition-backed SDF] and will leverage them in coordination with our partnered ground forces to allow us tools of terror from the battlefield,” he said.
Harrigian also stressed that the coalition will work on taking out ISIS drones. “As we discover new or evolving Daesh capabilities, such as small unmanned aerial systems, you can be sure we’ll take off the battlefield,” he stated.

In what has been one of the more stupid policies enforced by the White House, until recently the bombing of oil tankers was off limits for fear of creating civilian casualties. Thus, month after month ISIS was able to continue funding its operation unhindered. Why the policy changed, and who was really responsible for it, is a question that awaits resolution.
As to why it changed, I suspect it was a concerted effort by the Klingons and the Puzzle Palace. The administration may not understand warfare, but it does understand how money flows.

As I recall, wasn't it the Russians who shamed us into doing it? As I recall, they basically outed us for letting the oil trucks go and maybe even started bombing them themselves, making us look feckless, weak and not serious about fighting ISIS.
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The provincial police chief of southern Kandahar General Abdul Raziq has said he will not return to Kandahar until Tarinkot city is fully cleared of Taliban turbans.
Tarinkot city is the placid provincial capital of southern Uruzgan province which witnessed heavy festivities last week as the Taliban Death Eaters launched a coordinated to capture its control.
According to reports, sporadic festivities still continue in parts of Tarinkot city despite the local officials said the Taliban Death Eaters were pushed out of the city.
The growing threats by the Taliban Death Eaters to capture the city forced Gen. Raziq to visit Tarinkot and join the Afghan forces in the front line to coordinate counter attacks.
Gen. Raziq is one of the prominent security officials of the country and rose to prominence after 2001 when he was serving as the police chief of Spin Boldak district with his activities prompting dread among the Taliban fighters.
He has imposed an uneasy peace in Kandahar province which was the birth place of the Taliban group.
Being a prized target for the Taliban group, Gen. Raziq ordered the Afghan forces earlier in August last year to execute Taliban detainees who are incarcerated Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages! during the military operations.
Gen. Raziq has escaped a number of coordinated attacks planned by Taliban to assassinate him. He was slightly injured following a suicide kaboom nearly three years ago, while Talibs launched coordinated attack on his family home in Spin Boldak district back in July last year.

[DAWN] The army pledged on Monday to dispense justice as it launched an investigation into a reported scuffle between its officials and police patrolling staff on a motorway and ensuing events.
"Law will take its course in disposing the case and justice will be done," a military front man said in a statement on the Saturday incident.
The Inter-Services Public Relations described the incident as "sad" and said that an inquiry was being conducted into the matter.
According to police, Captain Qasim and Captain Danial were signalled to stop on Beautiful Downtown Peshawar ...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire. -Islamabad motorway near Attock on Saturday by a motorway patrol for alleged "reckless driving". The two officials driving their private vehicles did not pay heed to the signal and sped away. The patrol team chased them and brought them to a halt.
The drama started as Capt Qasim alighted from his car pointing his pistol at the patrol party while Capt Danial made a phone call and sought help from a nearby army unit. Four vehicles carrying some 25 soldiers led by Maj Zafran arrived at the place and assaulted the coppers.
Later the army men took the coppers to Attock Fort where they were kept in "wrongful confinement" till intervention by higher police officials, police said.
"On the written complaint of Sub-Inspector Atif Khattak, an FIR has been registered under Sections 279, 186, 353, 506, 365, 342, 148 and 149 of the Pakistain Penal Code at Akora Khattak cop shoppe in Nowshera district," an incident report by police said.
The charges relate to rash driving, obstructing a public servant in discharge of his duty, assault on a public servant, criminal intimidation and threatening to cause death or grievous hurt, kidnapping and rioting while armed with a deadly weapon. Most of the charges are non-bailable offences.
The military has not come up with its account of the incident.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere delivered a statement on Tuesday regarding the arrest of three suspected members of the so-called "Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... " ("IS"), saying the suspects had links to the group that carried out the November 2015 terror attacks in Gay Paree.
Specifically, de Maiziere said the three suspects arrested in Germany on Tuesday were smuggled out of Syria by the same smuggling organization used by members of the Gay Paree group.
A statement from Germany's Federal Public Prosecutor's office on Tuesday said that federal police and agents from Germany's GSG 9 special operations unit were involved in pre-dawn raids against the suspects.
The three men arrested in the raids have been identified as Syrian nationals. The prosecutor's office listed their names as Mahir al-H. (17), Mohammed A. (26), and Ibrahim M. (18). The full names of criminal suspects in Germany are usually not released by officials in line with the country's privacy laws.
According to the investigation so far, the three came to Germany in November 2015, with the intention of "carrying out a previously determined order [from IS] or to await further instructions."
De Maiziere said the three "could have been a sleeper cell."
Mahir al-H. is believed to have received training from IS in Raqqa, Syria on how to use weapons and explosives in September 2015. One month later, he and the other two suspects are believed to have agreed on a plan to travel to Europe to carry out operations or attacks outside of IS-controlled areas.
For the purposes of their travel, prosecutors say they were given passports by IS along with cash in US dollars "in a high four-figure sum" and mobile phones pre-loaded with a communications program. The suspects came to Germany from Syria through The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... and Greece, the statement said.
De Maiziere said that the documents possessed by the three suspects in Germany came from the same workshop where the documents for the Gay Paree attackers were made.
The prosecutor's office added that the investigation had not yet uncovered any concrete orders or instructions for attacks that had been given to the suspects.
The suspects were arrested in raids carried out in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, where the suspects' residences were also searched.
Over 200 officers from the German Federal Criminal Police Office, the national police force and Schleswig-Holstein state police were involved in the operation.
According to the BKA, authorities have received 415 leads on refugees with a terrorist background, but most have proven to be unfounded. Sixty-three investigative proceedings have been launched based on the information the BKA has received.
In addition to the usual collection of photos, Daily Mail adds:
Three Syrians identified only as Mahir Al-H aged 17, Mohamed A, 26, and Ibrahim M, 18, were taken into custody along with their mobile phones and computers.

The terror suspects locked away Please don't kill me! in an asylum seekers home in Schleswig-Holstein arrived in Europe with fake passports crafted for them by ISIS forgers and accompanied by two of the Gay Paree attackers. They landed in mid November aboard a refugee ship which docked at the Greek island of Leros.
Two of their travelling companions killed themselves with suicide bombs outside the Stade de La Belle France stadium in Gay Paree on November 13 last year. Two more conspirators aboard the vessel were arrested in the Austria city of Graz in December.
The suspects were placed under intense surveillance for several months, including bugging their phones and tailing their every move in an operation that cost tens of thousands of pounds.

Security forces fired tear gas and shotgun pellets to quell protesters in the Bandipora area of northern Kashmire and Shopian in the south, as well as in Srinagar, the region's main city, said a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorised to talk to news hounds.
Authorities did not allow congregational Eid prayers in the main mosques and Eid grounds in the region, but prayers were held by people in small neighborhood mosques.
Indian Express reported that this may be the first time a curfew is in place on Eid since 1990, adding that for the first time in 26 years, no Eid congregations will be held at the Eid gah and Hazratbal shrines.
Usually bustling with activity on such occasions, Srinagar's marketplaces were deserted, as most people remained indoors. Shops and businesses were closed as a result of the curfew, with drones and choppers being used by government forces for air surveillance.
Authorities decided to impose a curfew and keep an aerial watch after reviewing the situation ahead of the festival, a police front man said on Monday. "It has become imperative to impose a strict curfew... in view of the separatist march," the front man said.
The curfew appeared to have foiled a planned march called by Kashmiri separatists to the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... Military Observers Group India Pakistain (UNMOGIP) Office in Srinagar, which was set up to monitor a cease-fire between India and Pakistain.

[AlArabiya] Twenty aid trucks crossed from Turkey into the divided Syrian city of Aleppo Tuesday after a ceasefire went into effect, state media said, although the UN could not confirm the report.
The trucks carrying UN humanitarian supplies crossed through the Cilvegozu border gate in the southern province of Hatay, Anadolu news agency said, citing security sources. At least 40 trucks are expected to cross the border by the end of the day, it added.
No confirmation could be immediately obtained from UN officials in Turkey. Turkey has said it was already making preparations to deliver humanitarian aid to Aleppo, where some 250,000 people in the rebel-held east are under government siege.
A spokesman for the Turkish Red Crescent told AFP the aid group would start sending aid trucks to Aleppo from Wednesday, in coodination with the United Nations.
Syria’s government on Tuesday warned that all aid going to Aleppo, particularly assistance sent by Turkey, must be coordinated with Damascus and the United Nations.

Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS), saying that the operation of Iraqi forces in their areas will create decades of strife.
"Participation of any other Iraqi forces will open the hostile and Dire Revenge front for tens of years with the Shabaks," Salim al-Shabaki, a representative of Shabaks in the Iraqi parliament, told Summaria news on Tuesday.
"The Shabaks won’t accept participation of any other forces except the Peshmerga to liberate their villages from ISIS, despite their respect to all other security forces under different names," he added.
Al-Shabaki said that the Peshmerga have liberated some Shabak villages recently and he believes they will liberate the remaining villages soon.
He emphasized that Shabaks are ethnically Kurdish and want their areas in Nineveh annexed with the Kurdistan Region after the war with ISIS, noting that "we have moved 6,700 Shabak families from the southern provinces to the Kurdistan Region."
"The Shabaks are part of the Kurdish nation, and they will enjoy same rights like their Kurdish brothers in all Nineveh soon, and like the residents of Kurdistan, our areas will return to Erbil, Dohuk, and Sulaimani provinces. Shabaks support establishing a new province in their area to become part of the Kurdistan Region," he said.
The Shabak representative earlier in July told Rudaw that there should be a road map before the djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... offensive that all entities in the province agree to, one in which the Shabak minority become part of the Kurdistan Region.
"So far we have 1,384 deaders and 208 Shabaks who are still held captive by ISIS and their fate is unknown," he said. "Therefore we won’t stay with Mosul. We want to incorporate with the KRG [Kurdistan Regional Government] and become the fifth province of the Kurdistan Region."
There are 56 Shabak villages in Nineveh which are in Qaraqush, Nimrud, Bartle, Tel Kaif and Bashiqa. The Shabak are an ethnic and cultural minority living in northern Iraq.

In October 2013 Masoud Barzani, President of the Iraqi Kurdistan, basically created a Peshmerga protectorate over thirty Shabak villages in the Mosul region. Elsewhere in the north, the Shabak have little love for Sunnis as they were uprooted from their homes in southern Iraq during the Saddam Hussein epoch.
[DAWN] At least 13 people, including five cops, were maimed as police foiled two separate suicide kabooms during Eid prayers in Shikarpur's Khanpur tehsil on Monday.
Police sources said four suicide kaboomers infiltrated Khanpur during Eid prayers.
Two of the attackers targeted an Eid prayer ground where one assailant went kaboom!, injuring 10 people, two of whom were coppers. The other attacker fled, police sources said.
Two other attackers targeted an imambargah
...the Pakistani term for a Shiite mosque, whereas a Sunni mosque is referred to as a masjid...
but were stopped by police at the entrance on account of appearing suspicious. One of the attackers went kaboom! after he was stopped by guards for a search, whereas the other was tossed in the slammer ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... , police said.
Police officer Bahardin Kerio said the second attacker, a would-be jacket wallah, was shot and maimed at the scene, after which the officers arrested him.
Three coppers were maimed in the kaboom. Kerio said one of the maimed officers was at death's door.
He added that there were hundreds of worshippers inside the imambargah at the time.
Those injured in the blast have been admitted to hospitals in Shikarpur for treatment.
Initial interrogation of the arrested attacker, Usman, revealed that the would-be bomber was a resident of Swat's Qabal tehsil and had studied in Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... 's Abu Huraira seminary, police sources said.
The sources added that a person named Umer brought the attackers to the imambargah on a cycle of violence and fled after leaving them there.
Inspector General Police (IGP) Sindh AD Khawaja reached Shikarpur following the incident. The IGP told Dawn that the attackers hailed from Swat ...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat... but were based in Karachi and possibly had links to a seminary there which are currently being investigated.
Following the incident local leaders in Shikarpur led a protest against the attack. The IGP told protesters the police would investigate the case and requested them to lift the blockade.

[RUDAW.NET] Hamed Kamal Muhammad bin Haydara disappeared into the labyrinth of Yemen’s National Security Bureau three years ago. His crime: being a Baha’i. His wife says the last time she called him and spoke to him was in December 2013.
Since his disappearance, Haydara has been accused of "apostasy", "insulting Islam", and calling on Moslems to "embrace the Baha’i religion".
New York-based Human Rights Watch ... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge.... says that the prosecution in Haydara’s trial has asked for the death penalty for him. It says that. "Most of the charges against Haydara relate to his practice of the Baha’i faith."
Yemeni authorities allege that Haydara is an Iranian citizen who entered the country in 1991 under a false name while working for Israel.
"We reject this accusation" his wife, Elham Muhammad Hossain Zara’i, told Rudaw.
"We have lived in Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Haifa, in present-day Israel, has been the Baha’i faith’s administrative headquarters since Ottoman Rule in 17 century.
The writer is confused about how one numbers centuries from the year of the date. Since the Bab was born in 1819 and was executed in 1850, that would be the 19th century. His remains were reburied on Mt. Carmel 50 years later, in the 20th century. His successor, the Baha'ullah, was banished to Akko in 1868, dying there in 1892. Like the Muslims go to Mecca, Baha'i are supposd to make pilgrimage to Haifa at least once.
In Moslem Yemen, the law does not recognize any other minority religion except Judaism. Embracing any other religion is a punishable crime.
"The Baha’i faith is not recognized in the constitution, the tradition or by Islam. Therefore, it is a forbidden religion. If a Yemeni renounces his religion and declares himself a Baha’I, this is a crime to be tried at court." an official from the ministry of justice said.
"But if the person is from a foreign country and visits us, they can practice their religion at home in private, and this is not a crime and will not be punished," he explained.
Yemen has ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) since 1987, safeguarding the freedom of religion.
"Yemeni authorities have committed an injustice by prosecuting Haydara for his religious beliefs and compounding that injustice by seeking to execute him," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director of HRW. "The charges should be dropped and Haydara should be released."
HRW, which has published a detailed report on Haydara's case, says the judiciary system has been slowed down by the war in Yemen.
"The authorities have to deal with the issue, even if that means in contradiction to the law. We shall not allow the war to affect our humanity." a rights activist from the local Mwatana Organization for Human Rights, which has monitored Haydar's case closely, told Rudaw
According to Baha'i estimates, there are about 2,000 Baha'is in Yemen. Their appearance in a protest in April for the first time amounted to declaring their religion as part of Yemeni society.

[ARA News] HOMS – Islamist rebel factions threatened to attack the Druze minority in Syria’s southern Quneitra Governorate, after accusing them of supporting the Syrian regime, local sources reported on Tuesday.
Islamist rebels of the Qadissiyat al-Janoub coalition vowed in a statement to attack the Druze-populated town of Hadir if the residents refused to support the fight against the Syrian army forces in the Quneitra Governorate.
“The pro-Assad forces have imposed a siege on rebel-held areas in Quneitra, where thousands of civilians are suffering starvation. Our fight against the regime will continue until breaking this siege and defeating pro-Assad militias in the governorate. Thus, we call on the Druze community to cooperate with us and allow our fighters to enter al-Hadir town and create a supply route; otherwise, we’ll be obliged to open the route by force,” rebel factions of the Qadissiyat al-Janoub said in a statement.
Since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011, the Druze religious minority in southern Syria has taken a neutral position towards all parties to conflict. Yet, hundreds of Druze soldiers are still fighting alongside the Syrian regime’s army against the armed opposition.
President Assad doesn't require them to convert, pay crippling jizya, or die, so the choice is easy.
“We are a peaceful minority group, and we tried to remain neutral throughout this conflict to protect our families. However, the Islamist groups accused us of supporting the Assad regime,” Druze citizen and rights activist Wissam al-Amir told ARA News in Quneitra.
“We’ve received many threats from the Islamists. The people of al-Hadir town are now terrified after the recent threat from the Qadissiyat al-Janoub’s fighters,” al-Amir said.

(IraqiNews.com) Baghdad – As Muslims around the globe celebrate Eid al-Adha, a new video was released by ISIS titled ‘The Making of Illusion’ which shows 19 Syrian men being slaughtered like sheep for allegedly collaborating with the international coalition countries.
The video was released on September 12 from “Wilayat al-Khayr,” which is otherwise known as the Deir ez-Zor area of Syria. The men accused of being US spies are filmed having their throats cut in an animal slaughter house.
An executioner wearing a white outfit appears in the video carrying two prisoners on each arm through the slaughter house before slitting their throats over a metal grate.
The executioner was seen wielding a huge knife as prisoners are bundled into the slaughter house with their hands tied behind their backs.
The video also shows them hanging upside down by their feet from meat hooks with their throats cut while others awaiting execution are hoisted up in the same position.
Footage of past ISIS executions and recent terrorist attacks done by the group is shown in the video. The footage includes a photograph of the Eiffel Tower and the images of the aftermath of the Bastille Day terror attack in Nice, France.

[AlManar] The so-called ‘Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’ (ISIL) takfiri group slaughtered a number of detainees over spy charges in Deir Ezzor, east of Syria, after hanging them by their legs.
The terrorist group broadcast a video scene entitled “Illusion Industry” showing a number of people inside a slaughterhouse, handcuffed and piled on top of each other, before the group’s gunmen selected among them and slaughter them the same way they slaughter the sheep.
Other footage also shows a number of people trapped by their legs and are being slaughtered without separating their heads from their bodies.
The group accused the victims of being “part of a spy cell serving the coalition,” and that “they were sending information and pictures of the group’s sites to the coalition forces over the Internet.”

QUETTA: At least two police officials were killed and 10 other people were injured in a blast near a police training centre on Quetta's Sariab road on Tuesday as the nation celebrates Eidul Azha.
Militants were targeting a police patrol vehicle in the area, police sources said.
The explosion left two security officials dead and 10 others injured, security sources added. Five of the injured are security officials.
Bomb Disposal Squad officials said the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was remotely detonated, and contained two to three kilograms of explosives.
Paramedics reached the site of the attack and rushed the injured to Civil Hospital Quetta for treatment.
Security has been beefed up in the area after the blast. A cordon has also been established around the area to start initial forensic investigation and to control movement.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Sariab road is considered to be one of the sensitive areas of Quetta. Militants have been targeting security forces in the area for almost a decade.
Iraqi forces repel ISIS "Invasion of Death" on Mosul Fotos at the link

The Command said in a statement, “At dawn today, Nineveh Operations Command, backed by the international coalition air force, repulsed an attack by ISIS terrorist gangs on the axes of al-Houd, al-Hadr, al-Shabali, the infantry 15th brigade and Nineveh police’s 37th brigade.”
“The clashes lasted for five hours and resulted in the killing of 70 ISIS members, as well as detonating seven booby-trapped vehicles,” the statement added.
The Command also revealed that ISIS named this attack ‘The Invasion of Death’, and pointed out that no losses were inflicted on the security forces.

[ARA News] DUHOK – The official spokesman of the Islamic State (ISIS) group in Mosul was reported dead after gunfire targeted his car in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province, activists reported on Tuesday.
Abu Isaac, the ISIS spokesman in Mosul, was driving his car in central Mosul when a group of gunmen ambushed him and opened fire on his car.
“Abu Isaac and two of his escorts were killed in the attack,” head of Nineveh media centre Raafat al-Zarari told ARA News. “At least three gunmen were involved in the operation. The gunmen remained unknown.”
Speaking to ARA News in Mosul, media activist Abdullah al-Malla said that following the attack, Abu Isaac was transferred to the al-Adli hospital in central Mosul. “But when he arrived to the hospital, Abu Isaac was already dead. He was shot at least four times,” the source reported.
ISIS Media Chief Killed in Iraqi Raid
On Sunday, the Chief of Media Operations in the Islamic State (ISIS), Abu Muhammad Furqan, was killed in an attack by Iraqi army forces. Iraqi security officer Ali Daqqa told ARA News that a special forces unit from the Iraqi army raided a building in the Baaj district where Furqan and other ISIS-affiliated media workers have been hiding. “At least 20 ISIS media workers and officials were hiding in that building. They were all killed in the operation,” the official confirmed.
Abu Muhammad Furqan was responsible for the ISIS media operations, including the production of ISIS propaganda videos. He was the director of the al-Furqan jihadi channel, and an influential member of board at the ISIS-linked Amaq News Agency and the jihadi Naba’ newspaper.
Although the death of Furqan came as a shock to the radical group as he used to operate from confidential locations, observers believe that his death won’t have a huge influence on the ISIS media machine.
“Dozens of highly trained journalists are working for the extremist group,” Iraqi researcher Randa Khalaf told ARA News. “Of course Abu Muhammad Furqan had gained the trust of the ISIS leadership due to his successful work and commitment to the group’s agenda. However, replacing him won’t be difficult, as ISIS relies on several media channels to deliver its messages and official statements to its audience worldwide,” she said.
ISIS Security Official killed by Gunmen in Nineveh
Last week, a group of gunmen reportedly broke into the Islamic State’s (ISIS) Hisba police department in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province and killed a number of ISIS militants, including the ISIS security chief Abu Ayoub. Informed sources reported that the ISIS security headquarters in the Baaj district of Nineveh province was attacked by a group of unknown gunmen last week on Sunday.
“Five security members were killed in the attack, including Mahmoud Sulaiman al-Muslih, also known as Abu Ayoub, the ISIS chief of security in the Baaj district,” head of Nineveh media centre Raafat al-Zarari told ARA News.
Subsequent to the attack, clashes broke out between the gunmen and ISIS militants in Baaj. “Two of the gunmen were killed in the clashes, while the others were able to escape the clashes area,” local media activist Ali Saddawi told ARA News, adding that the gunmen had infiltrated into the Hisba police department “mainly to assassinate Abu Ayoub”.
“The target was known for torturing prisoners in ISIS detention centres across Nineveh. He was promoted by the group to the position of security chief for his strong ties with the ISIS’s leadership in Iraq,” the source said.
In the meantime, ISIS militants imposed a curfew in the Baaj district and installed new security checkpoints on Sunday in a bid to capture the attackers.

[AlManar] Three Qatari soldiers have been killed in Yemen, an army statement said, the emirate’s biggest losses since it sent troops to join a Saudi-led coalition waging war on the impoverished Arab country .
The statement published by the official QNA news agency gave no details of how the three soldiers were killed saying only that they had been “martyred on Monday”.
The losses are the first in Yemen to be announced by the Qatari army since November last year when one soldier was killed in action.
Yemen has been since March 26, 2015 under brutal aggression by Saudi-led coalition.
Thousands have been martyred and injured in the attack, with the vast majority of them are civilians.
Riyadh launched the attack on Yemen in a bid to restore power to fugitive ex-president Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi who is a close ally to Saudi Arabia.
North Korea spent an estimated US$5 million on its fifth nuclear test on Friday, the National Intelligence Service here said Sunday.

Task force commander Arnel dela Vega said it is just be a matter of time before the military will engage the rebels and make a decisive blow against Abu Sayyaf ranks and leadership.
Dela Vega on Monday visited the troops to boost the morale of soldiers fighting the Abu Sayyaf in the hinterlands of Patikul and Talipao municipalities.
Colonel Jose Faustino said, "We have to cleanse Sulu of the scourge of the Abu Sayyaf and make this place peaceful so that economic activity and tourism will prosper."
Colonel Jesus Manangquil said the troops are slowly constricting the movements of the militants, although they are familiar with the terrain. He said, "The familiarity of terrain is a noted advantage to them as of now but as our troops conduct more operations and patrols and become more familiar with the terrain, we will negate that advantage and we will deliver a decisive blow against the Abu Sayyaf (rebels)."
So far, 59 Abu Sayyaf militants have been killed since the start of military operations last month. Philippine troops have suffered 18 killed in action. 28 other soldiers have been injured.

North Korea is ready to conduct another nuclear test any time, the Defense Ministry here said Monday.
"Assessment by South Korean and U.S. intelligence is that the North is ready for an additional nuclear test in the Punggye-ri area whenever it wants," Defense Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-gyun told reporters.
"North Korea has a couple of tunnels where it can conduct an additional nuclear test," Moon added.
There are thought to be three main tunnels at the Punggye-ri site, each with branch tunnels that lead to other test areas. Tunnel No. 1 was sealed after the first test in 2006, while the second to fifth nuclear tests took place in tunnel No. 2. According to Moon, the additional tests could take place in the remaining branch shafts of tunnel No. 2 or tunnel No. 3.
Earlier, National Intelligence Service chief Lee Byung-ho was summoned to the National Assembly after the spy agency was taken by surprise by the latest test on Friday. Lee told lawmakers he "would not be surprised" if the North conducts a sixth and even seventh nuclear test.
Kim Hwang-rok, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, met with the heads of ruling and opposition parties and also said North Korea could conduct more nuclear tests judging by the existence of "two to three more tunnels."
The intervals between the North's nuclear tests have shrunk from over three years to eight months. The North claimed the fourth test in January was of a hydrogen bomb, but that seems unlikely. The latest and most powerful test so far was of a "warhead" for a missile, North Korean state media have claimed.

Gunmen on Saturday opened fire on a convoy of vehicles travelling to Maiduguri, from Monguno, 140 kilometres to the northeast.
"They rubbed out a driver and injured two women and a child travelling with him," said bus driver Kabir Hassan, who arrived at the scene shortly after the attack.
The victims were heading to Maiduguri to celebrate the Moslem festival of Eid al-Adha on Monday and the vehicles included traders in a pick-up truck packed with rams for the annual ritual sacrifice.
The traders abandoned their animals when the shooting started and the rams were seized by the rebels, said driver Abba Gana, who gave a similar toll of death and injuries.
A car abandoned by fleeing travellers was torched in the attack and the maimed taken to a hospital in Maiduguri for treatment, Hassan and Gana said.
