China-Japan-Koreas
Taiwan's president to visit US despite objections from China
Taiwan’s president is planning to meet members of Congress next month during a stopover visit to the US that will go ahead despite strong Chinese government objections, a senior Taiwanese official has said.

China tried to block the visit by President Tsai Ing-wen in the wake of a row over perceived pro-Taiwan comments by the US president-elect, Donald Trump, who also held an unprecedented phone conversation with the Taiwan leader.

The visit has caused speculation in Washington and Taiwan that Tsai may meet Trump in person, or members of his transition team, during a nine-day trip that begins on 7 January and includes brief state visits to Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

'Brutal, amoral, ruthless, cheating': how Trump's new trade tsar sees China

Speaking to the Taiwan legislature’s foreign and national defence committee, Javier Hou, deputy foreign minister, said Tsai’s planned stopover in the US would be made in accordance with past practice.

The foreign ministry was seeking to arrange for Tsai to meet members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, Hou said. The exact locations of the meetings, and the duration of the stopover, have yet to be announced. Trump’s transition HQ is in New York.

Trump infuriated China’s leadership when he spoke to Tsai on the phone and later made separate comments questioning the longstanding "one China" policy, under which the US notionally accepts Beijing’s view that Taiwan is part of China. The US does not officially host Taiwanese leaders.

Taiwan has been self-governing and de facto independent since the end of China’s civil war. Beijing regards it as a renegade province.

Antibiotic-Tainted Seafood From China Is Making Its Way to American Tables
Imported farm-raised seafood from China is tainted with antibiotics and often salmonella, U.S. regulators say, and the tainted fish is making its way to American tables.
Reason# 3,432,664 not to buy from China

The problem is, Asian fish farmers often supplement their fish feed with feces from pigs and geese, which contain harmful bacteria and antibiotics that have a direct impact on the seafood we eat. According to the latest research, up to 90 percent of the antibiotics administered to pigs pass through their urine and feces.

The U.S. Department of Commerce slapped a 112 percent tariff on Chinese shrimp, effective 2005, but unfortunately, Chinese suppliers have found ways to get around that.
A 100% ban from Chinese farmed source food would help

A new report from Bloomberg Business Week explains how pervasive the problem is, and how the Chinese are getting away with it.
Beside one of those fish farms near Zhaoqing, on a muggy day in June, a farmhand wearing a broad-brimmed straw hat hoses down the cement floor of a piggery where white and roan hogs sniff and snort. The dirty water from the pens flows into a metal pipe, which empties directly into a pond shared by dozens of geese. As the yellowish-brown water splashes from the pipe, tilapia flap and jump, hungry for an afternoon feeding.

Chinese agriculture has thrived for thousands of years on this kind of recycling‐the nutrients that fatten the pigs and geese also feed the fish. But the introduction of antibiotics into animal feed has transformed ecological efficiency into a threat to global public health.

At another farm, in Jiangmen, a farmer scatters a scoop of grain to rouse her slumbering swine, penned on the edge of a pond with 20,000 Mandarin fish. The feed contains three kinds of antibiotics, including colistin, which in humans is considered an antibiotic of last resort. Colistin is banned for swine use in the U.S., but until November, when the Chinese government finally clamped down, it was used extensively in animal feed in China. Vials and containers for nine other antibiotics lie around the 20-sow piggery‐on shelves, in shopping bags, and atop trash piles. Seven of those drugs have been deemed critically important for human medicine by the World Health Organization.

The overuse of antibiotics has transformed what had been a hypothetical menace into a clear and present one: superbugs, bacteria that are highly resistant to antibiotics. By British government estimates, about 700,000 people die each year from antibiotic-resistant infections worldwide. If trends continue, that number is expected to soar to 10 million a year globally by 2050‐more people than currently die from cancer.

In November 2015 scientists reported the discovery of a colistin-resistant gene in China that can turn a dozen or more types of bacteria into superbugs. Since then the gene has been found in patients, food, and environmental samples in more than 20 countries, including at least four patients in the U.S. Food, it now appears, can be a crucial vector. "People eating their shrimp cocktails and paella may be getting more than they bargained for," says Dr. Martin Blaser, a professor of microbiology and an infectious diseases physician at New York University Langone Medical Center who chairs President Barack Obama's advisory panel for combating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. "The penetration of antibiotics through the food chain is a big problem."

China, helping the world build a better superbug!

But the antibiotics aren't the only problem. Because the distribution networks that move the seafood around the world are often filthy, the products teem with bacteria that can't be killed by common antibiotics.
In almost a third of random seafood samples collected in Shanghai from 2006 to 2011, researchers found salmonella, a major cause of gastroenteritis in people. A closer examination of the germs showed that 43 percent of the samples harbored multidrug-resistant strains of bacteria.

After the U.S. antidumping tariffs on Chinese shrimp went into effect in 2005, a group of seafood executives gathered in Shanghai to find another way to export shrimp to the U.S.
Many knew one another from when they'd all worked for Shanghai Fisheries, a large company overseen by the government. The executives agreed to create a venture that would focus primarily on exporting shrimp to the U.S., despite the new tariff. They would finance and control the company from China, but it would be incorporated in Texas. That was the beginning of American Fisheries.

[...]

No paperwork connected to those 2011 and 2012 shipments of Malaysian-labeled shrimp indicated they might have originated in China. The certificates of origin were signed by officials at the Penang Malay Chamber of Commerce. On a day in August, a man named Mohd Noordin Ismail sits at a desk in the reception room of the chamber's offices in the seaside district of George Town. Bespectacled and wearing chunky gold rings on his fingers, Mohd Noordin has a foot-high stack of documents teetering in front of him. He says he's worked at the chamber of commerce for 40 years, and his duties include signing certificates of origin for products produced in Malaysia and then exported. The certification process, as he describes it, is built on trust. He's presented with documents provided by exporters, and he rubber-stamps the certificates under the assumption that the documents are genuine and correct. He doesn't verify their authenticity.

"We cannot trace if the shrimp is coming from Thailand or from China or from other countries," Mohd Noordin said. "We cannot trace."

A full ban from those countries would help matters as well
"When you talk about globalization...people move at different speeds," explained Bloomberg editor Megan Murphy. "Regulators move at different speeds and economies are moving at very different speeds and they will take their advantage where they can in terms of exploiting regulatory arbitrage...The antibiotics there have been introduced for a specific reason that is beneficial to that part of the economy. It's just that on the end product of the economy, on the more developed world side, that's where the problems are emerging."

Murphy said that there might have to be some sort of "global oversight" over this particular sector of the global economy in order to fix the problems.

Did Russia Just Test a Weapon in Space?
h/t Istapundit
On Dec. 16, the Russian military reportedly tested what appears to be an anti-satellite weapon--a rocket that can boost into low orbit and smash into enemy spacecraft.

The test could be the latest sign of Russia’s intention, and improving ability, to threaten America’s hundreds of government and private spacecraft--and chip away at the United States’ military and commercial advantage in space.

Suspect in Berlin Christmas market attack killed in Milan police shootout: Official
The Tunisian man suspected of driving a truck into a crowded Christmas market in Berlin was killed early Friday in a shootout with police in Milan, ending a Europe-wide manhunt, Italy's interior minister said.

Checks conducted after the shootout showed "the person killed, without a shadow of a doubt, is Anis Amri, the suspect of the terrorist attack," Interior Minister Marco Minniti said.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the Monday attack in Berlin, which killed 12 and injured 56 others.
Anis Amri

The wanted photo issued by German federal police on Dec. 21, 2016 shows 24-year-old Tunisian Anis Amri, who is suspected of being involved in the fatal attack on the Christmas market in Berlin on Dec. 19, 2016. (AP)

Amri, who had spent time in prison in Italy, was stopped by two officers during a routine police check in the Sesto San Giovanni neighborhood of Milan early Friday. He pulled a gun from his backpack after being asked to show his identity papers and was killed in the ensuing shootout.

One of the two officers was shot by Amri and is in the hospital, but his condition is not life-threatening, Minniti said. The other officer fatally shot Amri.

It was unclear how and when Amri traveled from Berlin to Milan. German authorities issued a Europe-wide wanted notice for him on Wednesday, two days after the attack.

That is awful. Mann's lawsuit should have been dismissed within a month of its filing.

Posted by: lord garth || 12/23/2016 8:42 Comments || Top||

#4  After wading through the double and triple negatives involved in the court's finding, I found the 100 page opinion to be a useful discussion of the issues and law involved in considering whether an article or blog could be construed as actionable defamation. As such, it may be worth the time of any site owner or moderater.

While the National Review is off the hook for its editorial on the lawsuit, that is certainly not the case for the Simberg and Stein articles. The case will be tried. They will have to defend their defamatory allegations of scientific misconduct. Good luck, but it doesn't look good, in my opinion.

The opinion concludes, "Dr. Mann has supplied sufficient evidence for a reasonable jury to find, by a preponderance of the evidence, that statements in the articles written by Mr. Simberg and Mr. Steyn were false, defamatory, and published by appellants to third parties, and, by clear and convincing evidence, that appellants did so with actual malice."

Russian hackers tracked Ukrainian artillery units using Android implant
h/t Instapundit
A hacking group linked to the Russian government and high-profile cyber attacks against Democrats during the U.S. presidential election likely used a malware implant on Android devices to track and target Ukrainian artillery units from late 2014 through 2016, according to a new report released Thursday.

The malware was able to retrieve communications and some locational data from infected devices, intelligence that would have likely been used to strike against the artillery in support of pro-Russian separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine, the report from cyber security firm CrowdStrike found.

The findings are the latest to support a growing view among Western security officials and cyber security researchers that Russian President Vladimir Putin has increasingly relied on hacking to exert influence and attack geopolitical foes.

Kellyanne's Brutal Response
h/t Instapundit
Donald Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway did not immediately accept a role in his administration because she needed time to consider whether she could both serve the president and care for her family. She eventually took the job as special counselor Consigliore?
"It’s very humbling to be asked by the president to continue to serve at a senior role," she told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo Thursday morning after her decision had been made public.

That wasn’t the best part of their conversation. At one point, Bartiromo asked Conway to respond to doubters who wonder whether she'll be able to manage a demanding outside counsel role while raising four kids.

Conway stated. "But I would say that I don’t play golf, and I don’t have a mistress so I have a lot of time that a lot of these other men don’t."

A Nuclear America Can Be A Great America
h/t Instapundit
As President-elect Donald Trump and Congress seek to "put America first," they should give special attention to an export sector America has been putting last: nuclear energy.

A focus on making nuclear reactors for export may seem quixotic. After all, nuclear power plants in the U.S. are struggling against cheap natural gas and heavily subsidized renewables. And historically, nuclear plants have been built locally, not manufactured.

But global demand for electricity is set to rise 70% over the next 25 years, mostly due to increased energy demand in developing nations.

And technological advances mean that new nuclear reactor components can increasingly be mass-manufactured in factories and shipped around the world for reassembly on site.

What’s at stake is a market worth $500 to $740 billion over the next decade, according to the Commerce Department, and hundreds of thousands of high-skill and high-wage jobs.

U.S. leadership on nuclear dates back to 1953, when President Eisenhower announced a U.S.-led effort "to provide abundant electrical energy in the power-starved areas of the world." It was called "Atoms for Peace."

It was a win-win for U.S. and energy-hungry developing nations. Thanks to this effort, the U.S. today gets 20% of its electricity from nuclear plants, which employ 32,000 workers directly and create an additional 200,000 jobs in the economy. And simply helping China to build four nuclear plants has created 20,000 jobs in 20 U.S. states, according to Westinghouse, whose nuclear division is based in the USA but owned by the Japanese conglomerate Toshiba.

But, but, but what about "China Syndrome"?

#4  Put more money into fusion research. Not the turkey known as ITER. But the small scale designs whether they are from MIT, Sandia Labs or any of the commercial projects. Partner with the UK, Japan, South Korea and the EU. The potential payoff is huge. If we can get D-T reactors on linefocus on the Proton-Boron 11 reaction cyclle. Has the potential to be direct to electricity with no need for turbines or waste. The current DOE fusion research is more about producing phd's than juice

For portability, it might turn out to be more effective to use nuclear energy to convert H, C & O into liquid hydrocarbon fuels (synthetic gasoline?) than to electricity stored in heavy and/or expensive and/or environmentally damaging batteries.

Trump Wants Boeing To Be a Competitor to Lockheeds F-35
President-elect Donald Trump upended years of Pentagon procurement planning with a tweet on Thursday, announcing he had asked Boeing Co. to price an upgrade of its F-18 Super Hornet jet that could replace Lockheed Martin Corp.'s F-35, the most expensive U.S. weapon system ever.

"Based on the tremendous cost and cost overruns of the Lockheed Martin F-35, I have asked Boeing to price-out a comparable F-18 Super Hornet!" Trump said Thursday in a post on Twitter.
Boeing agreed within the past 24 hours to cut the cost to Airforce One so it makes business sense to throw them another bone to chew on. Mr. Trump has saved more jobs and money so far as pres-elect than Obama in 8 years as pres (he actually doubled the debt.)

#1  It used to be the military set specs for what they wanted. The contractors built a prototype and tested them all against each other and then a winner was chosen. A price was agreed on and if the project ran over the projected cost, the contractor ate it.

Just handing out contracts to businesses that bribe give the best donations is how we get in this mess.

#5  Boeing has been pushing upgraded F-15, F-16 and F-18s to "generation 4.9" for a while. The idea is that while they can't be stealthy, they can have the near the same avionics and battle network management.

While Mr. Trump may be doing this just to hammer the price down on the F-35, and score points with his base (who think the plane is over-priced and under-performing), I suspect Boeing is hoping for foreign sales of the gen 4.9 aircraft.

ISIS savages upload a video of themselves burning two Turkis soldiers alive
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] ISIS savages have filmed themselves burning two Turkish soldiers alive having captured them in Aleppo.

A disturbing video shows two men with freshly-shaved heads dressed in seemingly fuel-doused camouflage army gear taken out of a cage and walked like dogs to their death by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
thugs.

Standing barefoot in the middle of a desert, they are connected by the neck to a torched fuse which eventually engulfs their bodies in flames.

As news of the video reached The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, the government shut down social media outlets to stop the victims' countrymen seeing the exectuion.

The 19-minute video released by ISIS in the Aleppo Province starts with footage of terrorists fighting on the ground.

At the end of the clip, two men are taken from a cage in the middle of the desert.

They are walked like dogs by two ISIS militants, who appear unmasked and wearing black clothing, brown suicide belts and carrying assault rifles.

A third terrorist stands guard.

The two men are made to stand a few feet from each other with their backs to a long fuse attached to their necks with a chain, which is ignited by one of the ISIS militants with the push of a button.

Flames make their way up the chain, which is intertwined with flammable material, and eventually the two men are set on fire.

The video, seen by MailOnline, shows the Turkish soldiers writhing on the floor in pain attempting to extinguish themselves, but it appears their clothes have been doused in fuel.

They eventually lose consciousness and burn to death.

It is understood the victims were Turkish soldiers captured in Aleppo.

Duterte: UN rights chief 'idiot' for murder probe call
[Al Jazeera] Rodrigo Duterte called a top UN official an "idiot" and "joker" for urging murder investigations be launched against him after the Philippines' president admitted to "personally" killing criminals while he was mayor of Davao City.

Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Tuesday said Philippine judicial authorities should probe Duterte's accounts of having carried out killings.

"This guy [Zeid] is ever the joker or crazy," Duterte said during a televised speech on Thursday, and repeatedly called him "stupid".

Syria's government recaptures all of Aleppo city
[Al Jazeera] The Syrian army announced the country's second city Aleppo has been fully recaptured from rebel fighters, the government's biggest victory in the nearly six-year civil war.

The last group of rebels and their families holed up in a small enclave in eastern Aleppo were evacuated on Thursday, under a deal that gives the army and its allies full control of the ancient city after years of fighting.

"Thanks to the blood of our heroic deaders, the heroic deeds and sacrifices of our armed forces and the allied forces, and the steadfastness of our people, the General Command of the Army and the Armed Forces announces the return of security and stability to Aleppo," said a military statement read by an army general on state television.
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
The statement said the victory in Aleppo is a "strategic transformation and a turning point in the war on terrorism and a deadly blow to the terrorist project and its supporters".

It is a further incentive, it added, to go on fighting to "eradicate terrorism and restore security and stability to every span of the homeland".

More buses leave Aleppo after delays
It represents a momentous victory for Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
and a crushing defeat for Syria's opposition.

Western Aleppo erupted in celebratory gunfire seen on Syrian TV, which showed uniformed soldiers and civilians shouting slogans in support of Assad.

The announcement came shortly after state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported that the last convoy carrying rebels and civilians had left eastern Aleppo.

"The last four buses carrying Lions of Islam and their families arrived in Ramussa", a district south of Aleppo controlled by government forces, the channel said.

Rebel evacuations were set in motion last week after Syria's opposition agreed to surrender its last footholds in eastern Aleppo. Since then, some 35,000 fighters and civilians have been bused out, according to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...

...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014...
, confirmed "the last convoy has left the rebel-controlled area".

Earlier, the Red Thingy said more than 4,000 fighters had left rebel-held areas of the city in the "last stages" of the evacuation.

Rebel forces agreed to withdraw from the bastion after a month-long army offensive that drove them from more than 90 percent of their former territory.

Britain
Britain's Prince Charles says populism risks return to "horrors of the past"
[Al Ahram] Britannia's Prince Charles said on Thursday the rise of populist groups across the world had deeply disturbing echoes of the fascism
...a political system developed in Italy symbolized by the Roman fasces -- thin reeds, each flimsy in itself but unbreakable when bound into a bundle. The word is nowadays thrown around by all sorts of people who have no idea what they're talking about...
of the 1930s, and warned against a repeat of the "horrors of the past" to prevent religious persecution.

The heir to the British throne, who plans to take the title Defender of Faith when he becomes King in an effort to unite all religions, said on BBC Radio there had been a rise in aggression towards those who adhered to a minority faith.

"All of this has deeply disturbing echoes of the dark days of the 1930s," he said. "My parents' generation fought and died in a battle against intolerance, monstrous extremism and an inhuman attempt to exterminate the Jewish population of Europe.

"That nearly 70 years later we should still be seeing such evil persecution is to me beyond all belief," he said. "We owe it to those who suffered and died so horribly not to repeat the horrors of the past."

The prince's comments follow a warning from Pope Francis, who said in November that an "epidemic of animosity" against people of other races or religions was hurting the weakest in society.

Europe has seen a rise in support for nationalist and populist movements in La Belle France, Italia, Britannia, Poland, Hungary and elsewhere this year, driven in part by a migration crisis which has seen some 1.4 million asylum-seekers arrive in Europe since the start of last year.

The number of hate crimes across the United States also spiked in the 10 days after the election victory of Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, following a campaign in which the real estate developer vowed to deport millions of unregistered immigrants colonists and called for restricting Moslem immigration.

Europe
Slovenia president urges removal of anti-migrant fence
[Al Ahram] Slovenia's president called for an anti-migrant barbed-wire fence on the border with Croatia to be dismantled, saying it now serves little purpose, in comments published on his official website Thursday.
Is the president of Slovenia the chief executive like we have in the U.S., or is he an elected ceremonial figurehead, like Israel and many other parliamentary democracies have?
"I believe we could remove the wire fence, bearing in mind that no migrant wave, like the one we had last year, is forseeable in the near future," Borut Pahor said.
So long as the fences stay up and are guarded, that is likely true. But take them down, and the colonists will come.
He said that even "if The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
opened its borders for migrants colonists, something that can't be predicted for the near future, we would still have enough time to erect the wire fence and other obstacles on the border."

Slovenia put up the fence along some 200 kilometres (120 miles) of its 670-kilometre frontier with Croatia -- an outer border of Europe's passport-free Schengen zone -- at the beginning of this year.

The stated aim was to prevent an uncontrolled inflow of people along the so-called Balkan route used by migrants colonists on their way from Greece to Germany and elsewhere.

But in the end the influx had already all but stopped by the time the barrier was erected, and critics say that it has also hurt tourism and been harmful to wildlife.

Slovenian authorities have nonetheless been reinforcing and replacing the barrier with a more durable panel fence, arguing that illegal migration has been rising and that a new migrants colonists wave could still come.

Pahor also said, in his comments originally made in a radio interview late Wednesday, that the removal would also represent a "sign of improved confidence (by the Slovenian government) in the newly elected Croatian government."

Afghanistan
Pakistan resumes shelling in Kandahar, Kunar provinces of Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Pak military has resumed artillery shelling in southern Kandahar and eastern Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Chitral. Kunar is Haqqani country.....
s of Afghanistan as Afghanistan summons the country’s ambassador to lodge a protest over indiscriminate shelling.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan (MoFA) said the Pak Ambassador to Afghanistan Syed Abrar Hussain was summoned over the recent artillery shelling from the side of Durand Line by Pak military and militia forces over Maruf district of Kandahar and Sarkanu district of Kunar.

MoFA further added that a formal protest was lodged over the shelling with the head of the first political department Musfa Arifi warning that the shelling in such a sensitive time when the relations between the two countries has been witnessing an all time low, could prove provocative and further ignite tensions.

The indiscriminate shelling by Pak military stopped with the formation of the new Afghan government, National Unity Government, led by President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
in late 2014.

The Pak military continued to fire artillery shells in eastern provinces that caused heavy casualties and losses to the local residents of the eastern provinces.

Although the Pak officials rejected shelling the Afghan soil however on some occasions they admitted that the shelling were done to respond to bully boyz activities along the Durand Line.

This comes as the Afghan and Pak border forces have engaged in deadly festivities along the Durand Line during the past several months, mainly due to irresponsible movements by Pak border forces along the line, as claimed by the Afghan officials.

Why I Still Don't Buy the Russian Hacking Story
I'm willing to believe that Russia sought to hack the U.S. election, but I still find the evidence lacking. That skepticism applies to the latest sensation -- a report that Russian proxies in Ukraine are employing the same malicious software used on the U.S. Democratic National Committee.

For months, I have been parsing stories of the great Russian hack -- the anonymous leaks from U.S. administration officials, the two fact-poor statements from the U.S. intelligence community, the distant echoes of briefings received by U.S. legislators -- for technical evidence. But so far, the only evidence pointing to Russian government involvement comes from cybersecurity companies that have studied Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) 28, a hacker collective that has attacked many targets over the years -- including the DNC in 2016

Don't get me wrong. It stands to reason that Russian intelligence was interested in the U.S. election campaign, and it's a distinct possibility that it leaked what it found to the press via WikiLeaks, despite the latter's denials. Russian President Vladimir Putin dislikes Hillary Clinton, and he probably would have been happy to hurt her chances of getting elected -- thus, by default, helping Trump. It's all quite logical, which is why a third of Americans believe Russia influenced the outcome of the election.

In the real world outside of soap operas and spy novels, however, any conclusions concerning the hackers' identity, motives and goals need to be based on solid, demonstrable evidence. At this point, it's inadequate. This is particularly unfortunate given that the DNC hacks were among the defining events of the raging propaganda wars of 2016.

Egypt scuttles UN vote on Israeli settlement after Trump warning
Trump isn't even president yet and he's making the world jump to his tune. This is more than Champ ever did.
Egyptian officials scrapped a plan to proceed with a United Nations Security Council vote condemning the construction of Israeli settlements, following pushback from Israeli officials and President-elect Trump.

"Egypt requested the vote's delay to permit them to conduct an additional meeting of the Arab League's foreign ministers to work on the resolution's wording," Haaretz reported, citing Western diplomats. But the vote might be postponed "indefinitely," according to the report.

Israeli settlement construction drew condemnation from the State Department earlier this year, in addition to the rebukes of more customary critics, raising fears in Israel and among congressional Republicans that President Obama might not veto a resolution on the matter in the waning days of his presidency. President-elect Trump stated his opposition to the resolution, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was lobbying Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to drop the resolution.

"The resolution being considered at the United Nations Security Council regarding Israel should be vetoed," Trump said in a statement. "As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations."

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., also called on the Obama administration to veto it.

Trump's statement might have had the greatest influence on the Egyptian decision, beyond Netanyahu's lobbying or other American statements. "Diplomats in Tel Aviv speculating that Sisi didn't cave because of Israel, but rather because he didn't want to piss off incoming president," Economist correspondent Gregg Carlstrom tweeted.
Smart move. Sisi knows a strong horse when he sees it...
Egypt is a temporary member of the UN Security Council, which is dominated by five permanent members — the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and France — which have the authority to veto council resolutions. Obama used that authority to block a similar resolution condemning Israeli settlements in 2011, but his administration's increasingly public frustration with the failure of talks between Israel and the Palestinians raised the possibility that he wouldn't veto it this time around.

Secretary of State John Kerry acknowledged the appeal of a change in policy when asked about a potential resolution to be authored by French diplomats. "If it's a biased and unfair and a resolution calculated to delegitimize Israel, we'll oppose it," he said at the Haim Saban Forum on December 4. "But it's getting more complicated now because there is a building sense of what I've been saying to you today, which some people can shake their heads, say, well, it's unfair."

Kerry emphasized that the Israeli settlements in disputed territory are not the cause of violence, but he argued that were nonetheless a "barrier" to an ultimate peace that was being tolerated by the Israeli government. "I'll tell you why I know that: because the left in Israel is telling everybody they are a barrier to peace, and the right that supports it openly supports it because they don't want peace," Kerry said.
The right in Israel wants peace: they just don't want to give away their country to get "peace", which in that case would be an euphemism for their necks stretched before the Hamas or ISIS blade. The problem isn't that Kerry fails to recognize this, the problem is that our current Secretary of State is weak and feckless enough that he won't say it publicly.
An absention at the UN would have represented a strong break, nonetheless, from standing U.S. policy and congressional Democrats and Republicans, as Obama's allies made clear Thursday.
An abstention would have been a signal that would have opened the floodgates to more hate and chicanery. It would clearly have de-legitimized Israel to the haters, the BDS types and the Europeans (but I of course repeat myself). Mr. Trump's incoming ambassador to Israel, and his incoming Secretary of State, and his incoming national security team apparently got on this right away and helped the boss make a good decision. I'm very encouraged.
"The draft United Nations resolution directly contradicts the Senate resolution I authored – and passed unanimously last year – condemning Palestinian terrorism and calling on all parties to return to the negotiating table immediately and without preconditions," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. "Direct discussions remain the best avenue to ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

New Romanian PM likely to be female Muslim
[DAWN] Romania's Social Democrat Party (PSD) proposed a leftist woman from the country's tiny Moslem minority as prime minister on Wednesday, a close associate of PSD power broker Liviu Dragnea who was ruled out of the job after being convicted in a 2012 referendum rigging case.

Sevil Shhaideh, 52 who must be approved by President Klaus Iohannis and then get a parliamentary vote of confidence, has served under a previous leftist-led government as regional development minister.

The PSD won the Dec. 11 general election and, with its junior coalition partner and long-time ally ALDE, has an outright majority in parliament of 250 MPs in the 465-seat, two-house assembly.

"I have come up with a solution that I hope will be accepted so that a government is in place quickly to ensure we have a budget plan approved by Jan. 15," Dragnea told news hounds.

Dragnea made clear he intended to be the power behind the new government.

"If appointed, she would be prime minister, but the political responsibility stays with me first of all, Dragnea said. She has work capacity, knowledge of public administration and EU fund absorption and of all ministries' operations."

Dragnea and Shhaideh, who comes from Romania's tiny Moslem community, are close. He was a witness at her 2011 wedding to a Syrian-born former agriculture ministry consultant.

India-Pakistan
PM’s militancy denial
[DAWN] WHEN Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
or members of his government speak about terrorism- and militancy-related issues, it often only serves to expose their lack of understanding of the matter or their wilful denial of the facts, or perhaps both. Addressing parliamentarians in Sarajevo, Mr Sharif claimed not only that all sanctuaries of Al Qaeda and the Pak Taliban have been eliminated in Pakistain, but that there is no presence of the holy warrior Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group either in the country. He went on to claim credit, as has become his practice, for the multiple successes in the fight against militancy. Perhaps on all counts, Mr Sharif is wrong. To begin with, while military operations have cleared Fata of the strongholds of the banned TTP, the steady pace of holy warrior attacks in tribal areas and the provinces suggests the continued existence of terrorist hideouts in the country. Indeed, that is the reason the military leadership has demanded greater action in Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

-- a vast jihadist infrastructure there operates undamaged and in plain sight. On Al Qaeda, while there have been great successes and the global attraction of its so-called brand has diminished, can the prime minister or indeed any official here realistically claim that every last strand of the group in Pakistain has been found and eliminated? What is the likelihood that Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodx al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra...
is hiding on Pak soil?

Moreover, in recent times, several of the biggest terrorist attacks in Pakistain have been claimed by IS. While those claims have been contested, the existence of IS propaganda cells here cannot be denied. So while Mr Sharif may be right that several successes have been won in the fight against militancy, the principal lesson has been that success is hard-fought and hard-earned.
It is, however, Mr Sharif’s careless words about IS that rankle most. For several reasons, IS has not emerged yet as the biggest militancy threat in the country -- but it could if the state is not vigilant. In neighbouring Afghanistan, its growth is often linked to the mass arrival of the TTP and anti-Pakistain Death Eaters in eastern Afghanistan. While there are certainly domestic reasons for the expansion of IS in Afghanistan, the very existence of a Pak-Afghan nexus should be alarming for Pakistain. Politicians claiming credit for things they have not done is routine. But in the fight against militancy, it is the continuing lack of seriousness of the politicianship that is alarming.

Palestinian shot dead throwing bomb at soldiers, army says
[IsraelTimes] Security forces attacked during operation to raze East Jerusalem home of terrorist who killed two in a shooting attack.

A Paleostinian was rubbed out overnight Wednesday by IDF soldiers in East Jerusalem, with the army saying he was targeted as he threw an improvised bomb at security forces, during an operation to destroy the home of a terrorist.

An IDF spokesperson said Thursday that during a clash, "suspects threw improvised bombs at soldiers, who responded by opening fire," killing the Paleostinian, identified by the Paleostinian health ministry as Ahmad al-Kharoubi, 19.

Security forces had arrived in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Kafr Aqab to demolish the home of terrorist Mesbah Abu Sabih.

As troops moved in, they came under fire and IEDs were thrown at them by rioters, the IDF said. There were no injuries to security forces.

The destruction of the apartment was carried out by smashing down walls and sealing off entrances and windows.

Sabih, 39, a former resident of al-Ram in the West Bank, killed two Israelis and injured six others when he opened fire on pedestrians near the capital’s Ammunition Hill. He was eventually rubbed out in a shootout with police on October 9, 2016.

Sabih was reportedly known to Israel Police as a suspected terrorist and member of Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", for several years. He had previously spent a year in jail for incitement and was due, on the day of the shooting, to report to an Israeli prison to serve a four-month sentence for assaulting a police officer in 2013.

In the two weeks prior to the attack, Sabih had been picked up and released by police five times and had been banned from entering East Jerusalem for one month, he told the Paleostinian Ma’an news agency.

North Korea rejects NATO's demands to stop nuclear missile program
[Al Ahram] North Korea has rejected NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A single organization with differing goals, equipment, language, doctrine, and structure....
's demand that Pyongyang stops its nuclear missile program, Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said on Thursday.

KCNA said that it is confusing why NATO, "the official function of which is to ensure security in the North Atlantic, meddles into affairs of the Korean Peninsula."

By putting forward its demands, "NATO proved that this military-politicial bloc turned into a puppet of the United States," the agency added. Moreover, "it plays into the hands of

the South Korean regime of Park Geun-hye which is living its last days," KCNA said.

Accusing NATO strategists of complete incompetence in the affairs on the Korean Peninsula, the agency noted that "this organization now plays the role of the instrument that undermines international peace and security."

Moroccan man arrested in Germany charged with plotting deadly ISIS attacks in Paris last year
[Daily Mail, of course]
  • The suspect has been named as 24-year-old Redouane S.

  • He is accused of being linked to terrorist ringleader Abdelhamid Abaaoud

  • He was tasked with locating safe houses for preparing attacks, it is claimed

  • The suspect was arrested in Lower Saxony state Tuesday

    Please don't kill me!
The suspect, who authorities have identified simply as Redouane S., was detained Tuesday.

The 24-year-old is accused of being a member of a cell that took orders from Belgian-Moroccan jihadist Abdelhamid Abaaoud,
...the 28 year old Belgian of Moroccan origin who had his fingers in a lot of ISIS pies...
who led the November 2015 attacks in Gay Paree, before being killed in a police raid.

Redouane S. was tasked with locating safe houses in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Greece between October 2014 and early 2015 that were used as bases 'for the preparation of attacks', the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The suspect was allegedly also aware of Abaaoud's plans and preparations for an attack in the eastern Belgian city of Verviers, before the cell was dismantled in a deadly raid in January 2015.

'Even after his arrival in Germany in May 2015, he was in contact with the group around Abaaoud and was ready for further instructions," prosecutors said.

The accused appeared before a judge on Wednesday, a day after his arrest in Lower Saxony state.

Airstrikes cause 17 casualties amongst ISIS Turbans near Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Seventeen Islamic State fighters were either killed or wounded Thursday in airstrikes by US-led coalition forces west of Kirkuk, a security source has reported on condition of anonymity.

The source told Alsumaria News that fighter jets bombed Taza, al-Rashad and Daqouq south and southwest of Kirkuk, killing five militants and injuring 122.

The airstrikes were carried out based on Iraqi intelligence information, the source explained.

ISIS fighters have been in control over several regions in southwestern Kirkuk since the group proclaimed a self-styled ”Islamic Caliphate” in several Iraqi cities in 2014. The group has used those locations as launching points for its attacks on Kirkuk and Salahuddin. Preparations are underway for a joint campaign by security and popular forces to retake those regions.

Battles between Iraqi government forces and IS in Mosul and Kirkuk have forced at least 125.000 people to flee homes to refugee camps.

Airstrike destroys ISIS war council in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Al-Hashd al-Shaabi’s leader Jabbar al-Maamouri announced on Thursday, that an air strike targeted the so-called “War Council” in Hawija district, southwest of Kirkuk, and killed two elite leaders of the Islamic State.

Maamouri said in a press statement, “Yesterday, an air strike bombarded a meeting of the so-called War Council of the Islamic State in Hawija district, southwest of Kirkuk.”

“The air strike was very successful, and killed a number of the Islamic State’s leaders, including two assistants of IS Wali of Kirkuk,” Maamouri added.

“The War Council was invented by the extremist group to synchronize between the efforts of its leaders against joint security forces and al-Hashd al-Shaabi,” Maamouri further added.

“The people of Hawija are cooperating with security forces, as well as providing them with information about the headquarters and hideouts of the Islamic State,” he explained.

The self-proclaimed Islamic State group is controlling the district of Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk, since June 2014.

Female IDF Soldier Fights Off 23 Terrorists in Ambush Attack
Today's rousing feel-good story. Hat tip Instapundit.
Captain Or Ben-Yehuda of the Israeli Defense Forces has cemented a legacy that will endure well past her lifetime. The young, decorated IDF Captain was in charge of a company of soldiers when they were violently attacked by nearly two dozen terrorists near the Egyptian border. Due to her leadership and bravery, she and her men were able to survive.

Captain Ben-Yehuda was in charge of the Caracal Battalion which was stationed near the Israeli / Egyptian border. Three suspicious vehicles quickly approached the battalion’s position and Captain Ben-Yehuda along with a driver went to check them out. As they approached the first vehicle, nearly two dozen armed men opened fire on their position in an ambush attack. Both Captain Ben-Yehuda and her driver were immediately shot in the volley of gunfire.

Despite suffering from a gunshot wound, Captain Ben-Yehuda managed to get on the radio and call for backup, administer first aid to her driver and return several magazines worth of gunfire back at her attackers.

Backup, in the form of several vehicles full of IDF soldiers, arrived on scene, the wounded Captain commanded the responding soldiers and positioned her men to effectively fight back the terrorists.

At this point it was obvious the IDF was going to be able to push back the armed group, and medical personnel wanted to evacuate Captain Ben-Yehuda to treat her gunshot wounds. However, she was unwilling to leave the battlefield until all of the fighting was done.

For her actions and bravery, Captain Ben-Yehuda was awarded Israel’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor.

After she recovered from her injuries, a special awards ceremony was held in which a surprise guest showed up, Captain Ben-Yehuda’s mother. A decorated IDF soldier in her own right, she presented the award to her daughter. Her mother, Emma Dina Ben-Yehuda, was a decorated IDF officer who served in the Yom Kippur War. She was also honored later for her work with grieving families of IDF soldiers killed in the line of duty.

Karlov laid to rest in Moscow
Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov, who was killed in an assassination by a Turkish policeman in the capital Ankara, was laid to rest in a funeral ceremony held in Moscow on Dec. 22.

Karlov was shot dead with nine bullets fired by riot police officer Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş late on Dec. 19 as he was delivering a speech for a photography exhibition at an arts center in Ankara. The assailant was also shot dead in the incident by police officers at the scene.

An initial ceremony was held at the building of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow. President Vladimir Putin, who promised retribution after the 62-year-old was killed, was among the mourners, including relatives and fellow diplomats. In the ceremony, the slain envoy’s body was laid in an open casket in RussianOrthodox tradition.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov laid flowers near Karlov’s body in a ceremony in the marbled lobby of the looming Stalin-era skyscraper in central Moscow. Lavrov said Karlov had been the victim of “a despicable terrorist act.”

Putin, who has said he knew Karlov personally and posthumously awarded him the highest military medal of Hero of Russia, paid his respects, briefly sitting beside the coffin and speaking to Karlov’s wife, Marina Karlova.

Karlov was a Soviet-trained diplomat who worked in North and South Korea during the 1990s and 2000s and was sent to Turkey in 2013.

Proceedings moved to Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral where the head of the RussianOrthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, led a ceremony. The envoy was buried later on Dec. 22 in a cemetery in a northern Moscow suburb with military honors, his coffin draped in the Russian flag.

It said this year's deficit will be 297 billion riyals ($79 billion), down 8.9 percent from 2016's budget forecast.

Revenues for this year are expected at 528 billion riyals, higher than projections a year ago of 513.75 billion.

Spending is expected to come in at 825 billion riyals for 2016, 1.8 percent lower than foreseen.

US react on Taliban’s demands for direct talks, saying ‘We support Afghan-led process’
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The United States has said Washington supports an Afghan-led grinding of the peace processor while responding to Taliban’s call for direct talks with US.

"I haven’t seen those comments either, but I would tell you that nothing has changed about our view that what we support is an Afghan-led reconciliation process," State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in response a question regarding Taliban’s statement to hold direct talks with US if their demands are met.

Kirby further added "We believe that’s the right approach. We’ve always believed that that’s the right approach."

"President Ghani, more importantly, also believes in the criticality of that approach, and that’s where our support will go to," he added.

The group offered new demands earlier this month for ending its insurgency in the country, including direct talks with the United States.

The other new conditions include recognition of the political office of the group in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...

"That is why there is need for America and its allies to come to the table for direct talks with the Islamic Emirate (the Taliban) for negotiating an end to the occupation," Sohail Shaheen, a Qatar-based front man of the group, quoted by The News said.

    India-Pakistan
    A flawed anti-terrorism law
[DAWN] PAKISTAN has faced multiple active terrorism threats over the past 15 years, which now constitute an existential threat to the state. In order to deal with this, Pakistain enacted an anti-terrorism law in 1997, subsequently improved to meet emergent threats through a number of amendments.

This law not only includes provisions for the punishment of bandidos turbans but also offers a comprehensive framework for dealing with terrorism on the lam. It enables preventive detention of terrorists, redefines the required evidence for conviction, lays down simplified trial procedures for the speedy disposal of terrorism-related cases and constitutes special anti-terrorism courts. Additionally, it also provisions witness protection programmes.

From this law follows all actions to confront terrorism in Pakistain, including the National Action Plan. Its expansive powers, together with the now expired Protection of Pakistain Act, have been widely criticised for falling short of international human rights

    Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Equipment US provided Lebanon used by Hezbollah: Israel
Armoured personnel carriers provided by the United States to the Lebanese army have been used by Hezbollah forces in Syria, a senior Israeli military official said on Wednesday. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israel "recognised these specific APCs... as those given by the US to Lebanon".

Israel shared the information with the United States "a few weeks ago", the official told reporters. He did not specify how many armoured personnel carriers were involved.
Nor did the Obama administration apparently respond...
Hezbollah has been fighting alongside President Bashar Al Assad's forces in Syria's civil war.

The APCs were probably handed by the Lebanese army to Hezbollah as part "of a deal", the Israeli official said, asserting that the militant group had "tightened its grip" over central Lebanese institutions.
"Here's the deal: you give us the vehicles, and in return we don't kill you. Deal?"
    "Deal!"
Images shared on social media in recent weeks showed Hezbollah staging a military parade in the Syrian town of Qusayr, which it retook from rebels in 2013 in its first major victory after it intervened in support of Assad's regime. Photographs of tanks, armoured vehicles and anti-aircraft batteries displaying the movement's yellow flag could be seen.

Washington said last month that the United States would be "gravely concerned" if military equipment it supplied to the Lebanese army ended up in Hezbollah's hands.
Not that we'd do anything about it, of course...
Lebanon's armed forces denied that the vehicles in the pictures had belonged to it.
    "No, no, certainly not!"
According to the Israeli official, Hezbollah has "about 8,000 people in Syria", estimating that 1,700 of its fighters have been killed there since the war began in 2011.

Watchtowers built by the Lebanese army on the Israeli border were also constructed according to Hezbollah instructions, with the country's military and Iran-backed Shiite militiamen conducting joint patrols, the Israeli official said.

    WTI, Brent oil prices drop
World oil prices are going down on Dec.22, according to the trading data.
Quick note to the Saudis: suckers!
The price of February futures for Brent crude oil decreased by 0.06 percent and stood at $54.43 per barrel as of 01:32 EST. This is while the price of February futures for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil dropped by 0.08 percent to $52.45 per barrel.

Earlier today, oil prices rose supported by a weaker dollar and optimism that crude producers would abide by an agreement to curb the output.

But the unexpected rise in US crude inventories last week and Libya’s announcement about boosting the oil output over the next few months changed the situation.

Perez and Ellison—along with state chairmen Jaime Harrison of South Carolina and Ray Buckley of New Hampshire, who are also candidates for chairman of the DNC, are seeking a mandate to reverse Obama-era tactics that cut funding and attention to local parties and left Democrats with far less power in Congress, governorships and state legislatures than when his presidency began.

Obama Scraps Registry For Some Immigrant Men, Mostly Muslims
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] The B.O. regime on Thursday officially scrapped the last vestiges of a U.S. registration system for Moslem immigrants colonists. If President-elect Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
now wants to introduce an expanded version of the program, he will have to start from scratch.

The post-9/11 registration program for immigrant men arriving mainly from the Islamic world hasn't been enforced since 2011. Although it never prohibited travel for men and boys from the more than 20 affected countries, including Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Trump's suggestions about banning Moslem immigrants colonists from the United States have led to fears that it could be reinstated and used for new and enhanced purposes.

The decision to erase it from the books entirely marks one of President Barack Obama
    Because I won...
's last administrative actions on immigration and will at least slow any Trump effort to introduce even tougher requirements, as has been suggested by a top adviser.

The registration program is "not only obsolete," said Neema Hakim, front man for the Homeland Security Department, "its use would divert limited personnel and resources from more effective measures."

ISIS Top Turban now Pining for the Fjords near Palmyra
Homs – A US-led coalition airstrike has killed at least seven Islamic State (ISIS) militants, including the group’s military commander in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. Local activists reported that the air raid occurred on Thursday and targeted an ISIS convoy in the vicinity of Palmyra city, east of Homs Governorate.

ISIS commander Amr As’ad, also known as al-Mukahal, was killed along with six other militants in the airstrike. Al-Mukahal was leading ISIS operations in Palmyra.

“The convoy was heading from Palmyra city to the T4 Military Airport in the eastern countryside of Homs when a US airstrike targeted them,” media activist Amro al-Hussein told ARA News.

“The death of al-Mukahal was another blow to the Islamic State,” al-Hussein said.

This comes amid intensifying fighting between ISIS militants and the Syrian Army forces over the T4 airbase.

On Wednesday, the Syrian Army repulsed an Islamic State offensive, driving the jihadists away from the T4 Military Airport. The extremist group had tried to storm the airbase earlier in the day, bombarding it with Grad rockets and mortar shells.

The Islamic State recaptured the ancient city of Palmyra on December 11. Military sources confirmed the rout, reporting that the army had been forced to withdraw under fire.

On December 16, aircraft of the US-led coalition destroyed 14 ISIS tanks and other equipment captured near Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra, which was recently taken from regime forces by ISIS. During the operation, 16 Coalition aircraft fired 22 munitions destroying 22 targets.

The group seized the tanks and other military hardware from Tiyas Military Airfield near Palmyra, between 11-13 Dec after the withdrawal of the Syrian regime forces. The US-led coalition doesn’t want these tanks to pose a threat to the coalition forces.

Russia had supported the Syrian Army in Palmyra, with airstrikes and logistical support but their efforts were apparently insufficient to save the city.

Western analysts suggest the Syrian Army and Russia were not well-prepared for an ISIS offensive on Palmyra, and focused all their resources on retaking the city of Aleppo from the Syrian rebels, this while ISIS needed a victory after facing several defeats at the hands of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Iraqi Army in Iraq, and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Manbij and near Raqqa.

“Regarding ISIS retaking Palmyra… if the Russians and the regime don’t strike it, we will,” the coalition’s commanding general Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend said last week.

ISIS first took over Palmyra in May 2015, following a protracted battle with regime forces. The Islamic State’s occupation was exceptionally harsh, even by the standards of Syria’s 5-year-long conflict.

    Iraq
    Mosul Offensive News
Iraqi MoD could call Iraqi militia to eastern Mosul

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi military officials are considering to seek backup from Shia-led al-Hashd al-Shaabi militias to embolden forces in the eastern region of Mosul against Islamic State militants, a newspaper has said.

Worked out by continuous battles and fierce resistance from IS in eastern Mosul, the forces may receive backup from certain militias operating under al-Hashd al-Shaabi’s flag, London-based The New Arab newspaper reported, quoting officials close to Mosul operations command.

Iraqi government forces, backed by al-Hashd al-Shaabi and US-led air forces, launched a wide-scale military campaign mid October to retake Mosul: IS’s last major stronghold in Iraq. Government forces are fighting on the eastern shore of the Tigris River, recapturing almost 50 percent of that region since then, according to security officials. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Wednesday forces recaptured 5600 sq km out of a total space of 7600 sq km of the province of Nineveh. Al-Hashd al-Shaabi has been, meanwhile, fighting the group in the western region, claiming to have isolated IS’s hideouts there from both Syria and Iraq.

But, as admitted by military media, progress in battles at the east slowed down over the past week. That is reportedly due to bad weather conditions and the density of the targeted districts.

A senior officer at the Ministry of Defense told The New Arab that the government has begun discussions over recalling nearly 5000 fighters from al-Hashd who are currently deployed near the strategic IS stronghold of Tal Afar in the west. “Most of al-Hashd groups agree to that, but some others refuse to join as part of military or police forces, and have declined to get government forces uniforms as was the case in previous occasions,” the officer said.

The officer admitted that al-Hashd militias are more accustomed to guerrilla-style battles, adding that though government forces enjoy an air cover from US-led forces, that support does not resolve the battle on the ground.

Reda Allawi, a senior commander at al-Hashd al-Shaabi, said their participation in the Mosul battle has become “very likely”. He told the newspaper that the battle there “needs intervention by paramilitary forces because the army is obviously dragging inside districts”.

He, however, conditioned that such an intervention must be officially declared. “The government should not appease Washington by again putting the army or federal police label on us,” as he put it, referring to concerns voiced by the US and other world bodies of al-Hashd’s involvement into the liberation battles.

On Monday, Iraqi President Fuad Masum approved a law passed by parliament in November that turned al-Hashd al-Shaabi from a paramilitary to national force. The passing of the long-debated bill came amid intense objections from Sunni groups within the parliament who feared the law would grant the militia unchecked powers, and therefore stoke sectarian tensions.

Al-Hashd al-Shaabi was formed by a decree from Iraq’s top Shia clergy to combat the Islamic State militants who took over many regions of Iraq in 2014. The militia is currently engaged in fighting against ISIS on the side of the Iraqi government forces, and its involvement in the liberation of areas inhabited by Sunnis has aroused international and local fears of sectarian twists.

The law counts al-Hashd al-Shaabi as part of the national armed forces and subject to its supreme commander. Its text says personnel affiliated with the force should be disconnected with any other political, social or partisan affiliations. It gives an exclusive mandate to the supreme commander of the armed forces to decide on the distribution and deployment of the force among provinces.

4 UN workers die in mortar attack in Mosul

(Reuters) Four Iraqi aid workers and at least seven civilians were killed by indiscriminate mortar fire this week during aid distribution in two separate incidents in eastern Mosul, the United Nations said on Thursday.

A U.N. statement did not assign blame for the attacks, but Islamic State militants retreating from the Iraqi military’s offensive in the northern city have repeatedly shelled “liberated” areas, killing or wounding scores of residents fleeing in the opposite direction.

The operation in Mosul, the jihadists’ last major stronghold in Iraq, has retaken a quarter of the city but the troops’ advance has been slow and punishing. The U.S.-backed campaign launched by a 100,000-strong alliance of local forces on Oct. 17, has become the biggest in Iraq since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Lise Grande, U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, condemned the attacks as a violation of humanitarian principles.

“People waiting for aid are already vulnerable and need help. They should be protected, not attacked,” she said. “All parties to the conflict – all parties – have an obligation to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure that civilians survive and receive the assistance they need.”

The authorities do not release figures for civilian or military casualties, but medical officials have said dozens of people are wounded each day in the Mosul battle.
al-Manar sez the butcher's bill is at 11, but you now how those guys are:
Mortar fire killed 11 people including four aid workers as civilians gathered to receive assistance in the battleground Iraqi city of Mosul, the United Nations said on Thursday.

“According to initial reports, four aid workers and at least seven civilians queuing for emergency assistance in eastern Mosul city have been killed by indiscriminate mortar fire,” Lise Grande, UN humanitarian coordinator in Iraq, said in a statement.

“Within the last 48 hours, there have been two separate incidents” that also wounded up to 40 people, Grande said.

“People waiting for aid are already vulnerable and need help. They should be protected, not attacked,” she said, adding: “The killing of civilians and aid workers violates every humanitarian principle.”

Iraqi forces launched an operation on October 17 to retake Mosul, the country’s last city held by the Takfiri ISIL group, and have retaken areas on its eastern side.

The UN announcement came a day after Human Rights Watch said that IS was “indiscriminately” attacking civilians who refused to retreat along with the Takfiris in Mosul.

“Residents said (ISIL) members told them in person, by radio, and over mosque loudspeakers that those who stayed behind were ‘unbelievers’ and therefore valid targets along with the Iraqi and coalition forces,” the rights group said.

The terrorists have targeted civilians with mortars, explosives and gunfire, HRW said.

70 ISIS Bad Guys die in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday killing of 70 members of the Islamic State, including senior leaders, by an air strike in Nineveh province, while also pointed out to the destruction of a cache of weapons and explosives laboratories in Anbar.

The ministry said in a press statement, “Iraqi Air Force, based on accurate intelligence information, bombarded a gathering of the Islamic State, south of Tal Abta area, killing 20 leaders and 50 members.”

“Iraqi Air Force also conducted several air strikes, destructing a cache of weapons and explosives and a laboratory for explosives manufacturing in Akashat desert, west of Anbar,” the statement added.

“The air strikes also destroyed an explosives laboratory in al-Sakra area, west of the province,” the statement explained.

The ministry also revealed that military intelligence directorate in coordination with the intelligence of the 16th brigade raided a headquarters of the Islamic State containing mortar shells and Katyusha rockets, as well as military gears in Shalat area, near Police Academy, north of Mosul.

There are three resolutions being put before the Delegate Assembly: one in favor of a boycott of all Israeli universities; the second, opposing academic boycotts in general; the third, condemning the suppression of academic freedom at Palestinian universities by the Palestinians themselves (the Palestinian Authority and Hamas)...

ISIL suicide car bombers kill at least 23 Iraqis
[Al Jazeera] Three suicide boom-mobiles driven by ISIS fighters killed at least 15 civilians and eight Iraqi coppers on Thursday in an eastern suburb of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
    , a military statement said.

The attacks targeted Kokjali, a suburb that authorities said they had retaken from ISIS almost two months ago. A military front man told Rooters news agency the vehicle bombs went off in a market.

    Meanwhile,
...back at the pie fight, Bella opened her mouth at precisely the wrong moment...
mortar fire killed 11 people - including four aid workers - as civilians gathered to receive assistance in the war-torn city of Mosul, the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
    said on Thursday.

Iraqi forces launched an operation on October 17 to retake Mosul - the country's last city held by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) - and have retaken part of its eastern edge. But these areas are still exposed to deadly artillery attacks, suicide vehicle bombings, and sporadic gunfire.

"According to initial reports, four aid workers and at least seven civilians queueing for emergency assistance in eastern Mosul city have been killed by indiscriminate mortar fire," Lise Grande, UN humanitarian coordinator in Iraq, said in a statement.

"Within the last 48 hours, there have been two separate incidents", which also maimed as many as 40 people, she said.

Mahmud al-Sorchi, a front man for volunteer fighters from Nineveh province, of which Mosul is the capital, said mortar fire killed aid workers from a local organization called Faz3a.

The UN's Damian Rance told Al Jazeera it is still unknown who targeted the aid workers and civilians. But he said ISIS combatants retreating from the military offensive have repeatedly shelled areas after they are retaken by the army, killing or wounding scores of residents fleeing in the opposite direction.

"I do not think we will ever know for certain which party fired the mortar rounds on Thursday," said Rance, a UN communications officer based in Mosul.

"However given that Iraqi forces have not been using artillery in Mosul city, and given that it is likely that the mortar rounds came from probable ISIS held locations, the probability that the mortar rounds were fired by ISIS is high."

Mosul's civilians are increasingly being caught in the crossfire, Human Rights Watch said in a statement on Wednesday.

Kurd kommies charged with using kid soldiers
Zakho – Armed groups in Iraq affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party have recruited boys and girls in the Yezidi district of Sinjar [Shingal] and other parts of Kurdistan “despite pledges to Geneva Call that they would stop the use of underaged fighters”, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Thursday.

“In two cases the armed groups abducted or seriously abused children who tried to leave their forces. The groups should urgently demobilize children, investigate abuses, pledge to end child recruitment, and appropriately penalize commanders who fail to do so,” the HRW said.

The international watchdog said they documented 29 cases in which Kurdish and Yezidi children were recruited by two armed groups, the People’s Defense Forces (HPG) and the Shingal Resistance Units (YBŞ)–both affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

“The PKK should categorically denounce the recruitment and use of child soldiers, and commanders in affiliated armed groups should know that the recruitment and use of children under age 15 constitute war crimes,” said Zama Coursen-Neff, children’s rights director at Human Rights Watch. “Boys and girls should be with their families and going to school, not used as means to military ends.”

Moreover, the HRW reported that some children were arrested by Iraqi Kurdistan’s security forces and abused, with some of the child soldiers and their families evicted from refugee camps because their children had joined PKK-affiliated groups.

“Kurdistan Regional Government authorities should treat children suspected of involvement with the armed groups primarily as victims of abuse, not as criminals, in accordance with international norms on child soldiers set out in the Paris Principles of 1997. The authorities should not penalize the families of suspected child recruits,” the HRW said.

The HPG pledged to end recruitment of children under article 16 on October 5, 2013, when commanders signed a “Deed of Commitment” with the Geneva Call, an international nongovernmental organization that promotes adherence to the laws of war by armed groups. The HPG’s commanders said they would “make all efforts to ensure that all 16-18 year olds are separated and kept away from combat zones.”

PKK officials did not respond to a letter from Human Rights Watch asking if the HPG has penalized commanders for violating these internal rules, and other questions including the minimum age of recruitment, the international watchdog said.

“The YBŞ should demobilize any children in their ranks, end all recruitment of children under age 18, and punish recruiters,” Human Rights Watch added.

“Kurdish and Yezidi communities in Iraq have suffered unbearable horrors from war, but there is simply no excuse for using children to fight even if they are volunteering to join up,” Coursen-Neff said. “The PKK should take immediate steps to root out all child recruitment, refuse to accept child volunteers, and make amends to the families and children who have suffered.”

‘Honour killings increasing in urban areas’
[DAWN] KARACHI: "No longer restricted to the rural and tribal areas of Pakistain, but sadly increasing in urban communities as well is a very serious human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
issue that Pakistain faces -- violence in the name of honour," said Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari at the launch of Nafisa Shah’s book Honour Unmasked: Gender Violence, Law, and Power in Pakistain at the Arts Council on Wednesday.

With regard to 2016 alone, he reminded the audience of a few such heinous incidents of young women being murdered in the name of ’honour’. From a jirga in Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
ordering the killing of a teenager, a mother torching to death her own teenage daughter, and even the honour killing of social media activist Qandeel Baloch, Bilawal lamented the reality of how women in the country are falling prey to crimes of ’honour’ perpetrated by those near and dear to them.

In the midst of his speech, Bilawal went off script and decided to engage the audience in a more honest appraisal of the political standing of laws and consequent amendments to prosecute those guilty of honour killings. It was then that the contradictions the country faces came right to the fore.

"It is rightly said that it is up to my generation to find a solution, but the problem is that we cannot do it alone. We know how controversial, how dangerous this topic gets. We, as the PPP, have lost Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
and despite having a UN commission investigate her liquidation, we have not got justice. Then how am I expected to get justice for every woman and child in Pakistain who suffers at the hands of the violence of men?" he questioned.

"The challenge before us is to create a system of justice that will punish the [perpetrators of] violence and not seek out cultural, religious or moral rationales."

The author of Honour Unmasked, Nafisa Shah, also spoke about how the book is primarily academic while incorporating anthropological theories of honour and law. "I have explored connections between practices of violence and ideologies of peace, between victims and perpetrators, between custom and law, between state and society," she explained.

    Caribbean-Latin America
    Violence in Mexico Surges
Mexico’s homicide rate is surging. Government and independent sources are reporting an up to 18 percent increase for 2016, compared to last year. This comes on the heels of a multi-year decline in criminal violence in many parts of the country. It has been more than six years since Mexico’s murder rate shot up so “dramatically,” notes former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico (2002-2009) Antonia Garza.

The U.S. has given Mexico $139 million this year to help “advance justice sector reform, modernize Mexico’s borders (north and south), and support violence prevention programs.” This aid is part of the Mérida Initiative, a $2.5 billion, eight-year bilateral security agreement that went into effect in 2008 and that Ambassador Garza helped spearhead.

So why is violence on the rise, and why isn’t billions of dollars of U.S. aid sufficient in boosting security?

The answer lies largely in the failure of well-intentioned policies. Former Mexican President Felipe Calderón started the country’s war on drugs in earnest in December 2006, when he sent 6,500 federal troops to Michoacán state to eliminate cartel operations there. During his six years in office, Calderón’s method of ending drug violence was to use federal forces to wipe out drug lords and patrol cities, while getting state and local law enforcement officers to clean up their acts – that is, end the cycle of corruption and involvement with criminal organizations – and also aid in the eradication of Mexico’s leading criminals. Mexico’s current president, Enrique Peña Nieto, has more or less carried out this same approach.

But hitting drug cartels at the top only creates eventual fragmentation, Dwight Dyer told The Cipher Brief. Dyer, who is the former Head of Analysis at Mexican national intelligence agency Cisen, explained that when ring leaders are captured, groups tend to break up quickly into smaller factions, resulting in more competition and leading to more violence.

In addition to this seemingly effective but in reality insufficient policy of targeting criminals at the top of the totem pole, the Calderón-era of judicial reform has yet to prove fruitful. A series of reforms, passed in 2008, intended to create more transparency in the judiciary and transform it from “a closed inquisitorial system toward an adversarial model,” explains Kimberly Breier, Director of the U.S.-Mexico Futures Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in a recent article. However, writes Breier, that model has “yet to be fully implemented” and there remains “slow progress on rule-of-law issues.”

Compounding the failures of Mexico’s judiciary is widespread corruption within President Peña Nieto’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Then there’s the fluctuating economy, which, when weak, can exacerbate corruption amongst politicos and law enforcement, enabling criminal groups and violence to flourish.

Low oil prices have had a drag on the Mexican economy, given the country’s role as an energy supplier. The 2008 financial crisis in the U.S. also took its toll, since America is Mexico’s largest export market.

The connection between economics, corruption, and a failed strategy to eliminate drug cartels has diminished the effectiveness of U.S. financial aid to help Mexico fight its war on drugs. According to Breier, the United States, instead, should look to other methods of weakening organized crime influence. “Success will depend primarily on U.S.-Mexican intelligence and law enforcement partnerships and the mutual sharing of information,” she said.

The U.S. could also do more to curtail drug demand in the United States.

An economically more vibrant, politically stronger, and less violent Mexico is in the interest of the United States. Mexico is a huge export market for America, and thus, a source of millions of U.S. jobs. Plus, a better situation at home means fewer Mexicans crossing the border into the United States looking for jobs – a major concern for President-elect Donald Trump.

It is unclear if Mr. Trump will continue the Mérida Initiative of security cooperation or come up with a new approach to assist Mexico with its critical security needs. What is clear is that Mexico’s current efforts are not working.

Bureaucrat facing Rs40bn corruption charges ‘cleared’
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: In a decision expected to raise eyebrows among opposition parties as well as legal circles about the effectiveness of the National Accountability Bureau, a top government functionary facing serious allegations of corruption was on Wednesday ’cleared’ by NAB, paving the way for his release from custody.

Mushtaq Ahmed Raisani, the then finance secretary of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
, hit the headlines in May this year when NAB seized over Rs730 million hard cash from his house in Quetta hours after he was taken into custody.

As the drama involving the recovery of such a large amount began to unfold, the finance man was also found to be owning as many as a dozen houses in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, whose estimated cost was said to be around Rs2 billion.

With the suspect caught keeping millions in illegal money and owning property obtained beyond his known sources of income, it appeared to be an open-and-shut case ending with his conviction -- until NAB’s decision on Wednesday.

The executive board meeting (EBM) of NAB, which itself had put Mr Raisani’s corruption figure at Rs40bn, accepted his plea bargain request for Rs2bn. NAB chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry presided over the meeting.

Mushtaq Raisani’s plea bargain request of over Rs2bn accepted
"The EBM decided to accept plea bargain request of over Rs2 billion of Mushtaq Ahmed Raisani, Secretary Finance Balochistan, and Sohail Majeed Shah, contractor and frontman of Khalid Lango, ex-adviser to Chief Minister Balochistan," the NAB front man confirmed.

He said it was the biggest-ever plea bargain deal struck by NAB.

In reply to a question, the front man said Mr Raisani would be "fully cleared" after the deal is approved by the accountability court. However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
he would not be able to seek any government job or a bank loan for next 10 years.

"We have already recovered over Rs1 billion cash from the accused which was in addition to confiscation of his 12 houses," the front man said.

Iran Seeking New Missiles, War Equipment, sez Puzzle Palace
This is one reason why you don't pay ransoms to terrorist governments.
Pentagon officials are downplaying declarations by Iran that it is spending some $1.7 billion provided by the United States on new advanced weapons systems, while also acknowledging that the Islamic Republic continues to build its military arsenal at an increasing rate, according to a Defense Department assessment obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, informed Congress in an unclassified communication last week that the Pentagon does not believe Iran has spent some $1.7 billion awarded by the United States as part of what many described as a “ransom” payment to purchase new military equipment.

However, Dunford said that Iran is boosting its war machine, causing “great concern” among regional allies and other groups, according to information provided to Congress that downplayed the impact of the $1.7 billion payment to Tehran.

The assessment has been met with skepticism by congressional sources and foreign policy insiders who pointed to recent statements by Iranian officials who said that U.S. funds have been allocated to military sources.

“Intelligence assesses that the $1.7 billion transferred to Iran probably was allocated predominately to Iran’s economic sector, in accordance with Tehran’s stated emphasis on economic expansion, modernization, and diversification,” Dunford said in response to multiple questions from lawmakers, including Sen. Ted Cruz (R., Texas) and 17 other senators.

Lawmakers suspect that Iran has used this cash infusion to boost its military operations in the region, including in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq.

However, Dunford maintained this is not the case.

“Iran continues to seek improved missile systems and the replacement of aging military equipment, particularly aircraft and naval vessels,” he wrote. “However, there is a lack of information to suggest Iran is attempting to use the $1.7 billion towards these interests.”

One veteran foreign policy insider who liaises with Congress on the issue told the Free Beacon that the Pentagon is working off of politicized intelligence that aims to downplay Tehran’s military aspirations.

“Literally no one on the Hill takes the Obama administration seriously when they talk about the Iran ransom,” the source said. “Everyone knows the intelligence is politicized to hide the damage done by the president’s diplomacy. There’s a reason every Democrat in Congress voted for locking in Iran sanctions in the Iran Sanctions Act a few weeks ago. American lawmakers have had enough.”
I do hope that President Trump and Secretary Mattis clean house. This nonsense has to go away. We'll never have a politics-free military, but the military has to focus on capabilities and call it out when they see it.
Iranian leaders claimed earlier this year that Iran had ordered the $1.7 billion be invested in the country’s military budget.

When asked about these reports at the time, the State Department declined comment, telling the Free Beacon: “We would refer you to the Iranian government to address questions about its budget.”

The nearly $2 billion, which was delivered to Iran in cash, is a substantial cash infusion to the country’s coffers and was viewed by lawmakers as a primary means for Iran to invest in advanced military technology.

Since the payment was made, Iran has pursued multiple arms deals with Russia and sought to purchase a slew of new commercial jetliners, which the country has historically integrated into its air force.

Dunford admitted in his correspondence to Congress that Iran’s actions—including the buildup of ballistic missiles and other advanced weaponry—continue to cause worry in the Middle East.

“Regional actors have expressed great concern about Iran’s activities and intent, but I have not received new, specific concerns regarding an increasing belligerence or growing military investment on the part of Iran,” Dunford wrote.

When asked by lawmakers if the $1.7 billion payment has caused Dunford to reassess his view of the region, the top military official bristled.

“This specific transfer of money has not forced me to reconsider or change the advice I provide to the president or guidance I deliver to the Combatant Commands,” he wrote.

Dunford said earlier this year that the White House had not consulted with him before sending the $1.7 billion to Iran. Dunford said there is no correlation between increased financial resources and Iran’s increased malign activity in the region, as well as its repeated threats against U.S. assets.

“While Iran seeks to project an image of increasing strength in the region, its malign activities remain within historic norms,” he wrote. “There is a lack of information to suggest any change in the overall level of Iran’s belligerent activities is directly correlated with an increase in available financial resources.”

The anti-Ellison: Labor Sect'y Tom Perez puts himself forward as pro-Israel DNC chair
Will Ellison be the rock on which the Democrats founder?
Perez is no prize; he's much more a hard-core Marxist than Ellison.
So the choice is between the Muslim Brotherhood/Nation of Islam candidate and the Marxist who loves a Socialist Israel that no longer exists? May whoever wins bring them much joy as their party is pounded to flinders by a rising tide that lifts all the boats but theirs.
    You're a lot kinder than I'd be...
[IsraelTimes] In his quest to chair the Democratic National Committee, US Labor Secretary Tom Perez is trying to gain traction with a constituency deeply divided about his chief opponent, Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison.

Perez held a conference call with more than 50 prominent Jewish leaders and activists on Wednesday afternoon, including dozens of former and current members of Congress. The call was organized by Bluelight Strategies, a consulting firm that represents a number of Jewish organizations and Democratic interest groups.

While Perez did not mention Ellison by name, he took pains to distinguish himself from the man whose past remarks the Anti-Defamation League recently deemed "disqualifying" for the leadership post.

According to several Jewish Democrats who participated in the call, Perez has already made inroads with a community eager for an alternative to Ellison.

"Most members of the DNC won’t vote against him because of his stance on Israel, maybe some, but not a lot," one former Jewish leader and Democratic official who was on the call said. "But the fact that it’s an issue with the Jewish community will matter to DNC members because it’s an issue. Tom is letting it be known that that is not a problem with him."

The internal DNC election takes place on the weekend of February 23 to February 26. Out of the 447 party officials who cast a vote, fewer than 20 are Jewish, according to a source familiar with the matter.

“When [Shimon Peres] passed away, I remember going to my church to say a prayer for him and to light a candle for him, and to hope that the progressive values that he championed are progressive values that will endure,” Perez added.
Perez, who was urged to run by the White House, repeatedly referred to his past collaboration with ADL during the almost hour-long conversation. At one point, he said he had long ago "memorized" the Jewish rights group’s mission statement, which he called "timeless."

Three weeks ago, ADL chief Jonathan Greenblatt rebuked Ellison for newly released audio in which he seemed to encourage Americans of Arab descent to become active in politics by suggesting that US foreign policy was dictated by Israeli interests.

Ellison insisted he was "taken out of context" and that the audio of his address, given at a private fundraiser, was "selectively edited."

The Investigative Report on Terrorism, which first released the recording of the speech, responded by publishing a follow-up of the entire audio, which also divulged the Congressman saying the US "can’t allow another country to treat us like we’re their ATM," referring to Israel, but that "it makes all the sense in the world when you see that that country has mobilized its Diaspora in America to do its bidding in America."

Ellison, the first Moslem elected to Congress, has garnered the support of some in the Jewish community, including the left-wing Mideast policy group J Street and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
Senator-for-life from New York, renowned for his love of standing in front of cameras. Schumer has been a professional politician since 1975, when disco was in flower.
, one of the most prominent Jewish members of Congress and a famously staunch supporter of Israel.

But he has also elicited strong opposition from some in the party establishment.

Israeli-American media mogul Haim Saban, a major Democratic donor, lashed out at Ellison recently, calling him "clearly an anti-Semitic and anti-Israel individual" who "would be a disaster for the relationship between the Jewish community and the Democratic Party."

Saban is one of the highest overall individual contributors to the Democratic Party who in 2002 wrote a $7 million check to underwrite the DNC’s headquarters building in Washington, DC.

Perez also mentioned his past visit to Israel and admiration for former president and prime minister Shimon Peres.

"One of the privileges of my life was getting to travel to Israel and meet someone who is one of my heroes, Shimon Peres," he said. "Uncle Shimon, to me."

"When he passed away, I remember going to my church to say a prayer for him and to light a candle for him, and to hope that the progressive values that he championed are progressive values that will endure," he added.

Israel busts Hamas cell planning suicide bombings in Jerusalem, Haifa
A personnel chart with photos and names in Hebrew can be seen at the link.
[IsraelTimes] Shin Bet says 20-member West Bank network, including several ex-prisoners, was gearing up for terror attacks; 4 jacket wallahs were recruited.

Israeli security agents busted a 20-member Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", cell that was plotting suicide kabooms and shootings against Israeli citizens in major Israeli cities, including Jerusalem and Haifa, the Shin Bet disclosed on Thursday.

The internal security agency didn’t specify when the sting took place, only saying it occurred in recent months, incorporated various IDF units, and that the Hamas cell was in a state of "high readiness to carry out deadly suicide kabooms."

The Shin Bet said it tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
over 20 Hamas operatives from across the West Bank, many of whom had previously spent time in Israeli prisons for terrorism charges. The cell was "hierarchical and organized," the Shin Bet said, with various members involved in different aspects of planning the attacks.

The suspects told Sherlocks that between May and August 2016 they set up a lab in Nablus and produced nearly 15 pounds of TATP
...known affectionately as "Mother of Satan," it can easily be mixed up in the bathtub of your mother, but is very tempermental, exploding unpredictably in one's backpack just as one is waiting at the bus stop for the crowd to come out after the University of Oklahoma football game...
explosives intended for suicide kabooms in Jerusalem, Haifa and bus stations across the country.

They also obtained M-16 rifles for attacks on Israeli civilians, and enlisted four suicide bombers. The terror cell was supported by a broad network of supporters who assisted in acquiring and storing weapons, transferring funds and hiding wanted persons.

The terror network was foiled before it could carry out attacks, the Shin Bet said in the statement.

"This investigation shows, once again, the great efforts made by the terrorist organization Hamas to establish infrastructure in the West Bank with the aim of carrying out attacks against Israel," it said.

On December 8, the Shin Bet announced that Israeli security forces broke up a Hamas terror cell that was plotting to kidnap IDF soldiers in the Hebron area in October. Six members of the seven-person cell were arrested throughout the month of October, and a number of assault rifles and pistols were also found and confiscated, the Shin Bet security service said. The seventh member and alleged criminal mastermind of the cell, Ibrahaim Abdallah Ghnimat, is accused of planning the kidnapping operations from a prison cell, as he is currently serving a life sentence for his role in a slew of terror attacks in the 1990s, including the kidnapping and murder of an IDF soldier, Sharon Edri.

Released Pakistani goes missing in Germany
[DAWN] Naveed Baloch -- the Pak asylum seeker who was detained in Berlin for his suspected involvement in a deadly assault in which 12 people died early this week, and who was said to have been released late on Tuesday for lack of evidence against him -- has neither contacted his family nor reached the refugee shelter in the German capital where he was living.

Naveed’s father Hassan Baloch told Dawn on Wednesday that his son had gone missing. He said he had not been contacted by Naveed even though media reports said his son had been set free by the Berlin police on Tuesday night.

When contacted, a Baloch activist in Berlin, Wajid Baloch, confirmed that Naveed had yet to reach the refugee shelter where he was living prior to his detention.

His mobile phone had been switched off, Wajid said. He said he was in contact with the head of the refugee shelter.

Hassan said his son used to work on a daily wage basis in the local fishing industry. "Out of frustration and fed up with unemployment, my son went to Germany 17 months ago," he said.

Hassan lives in Kech district of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...

The Daily Mail has a good deal more about the illiterate, mentally unfit Balochi, who needs his cousin to take care of him... according to the cousin.
