Noor Salman, wife of Orlando bomber, now jugged by FBI
WASHINGTON — The wife of the man who carried out a deadly terrorist attack in Orlando, Fla., has been arrested in connection with the mass shooting, a law enforcement official said Monday.

The woman, Noor Salman, was taken into custody by F.B.I. agents at her home outside of San Francisco. Prosecutors had been weighing charges against her in the aftermath of the attack that killed 49 people and wounded dozens. A person familiar with details of the arrest said Ms. Salman was charged with obstruction.

Ms. Salman’s husband, Omar Mateen, was killed in a shootout with police during the rampage in a gay club on June 12, 2016.
That would be the Pulse nightclub, added to aid future archive searches.
Investigators interviewed Ms. Salman for hours after the attack and came to believe she was not telling the truth about her husband’s plans to carry out the rampage.

She is expected to make an initial appearance on Tuesday in federal court in San Francisco.

WAPO: A Hellscape of Lies Awaits Journalists Covering The Donald
Feelgood story of the day.
Now with executive powers, a compliant attorney general and a lily-livered Congress. Trump's reign will probably be awash in investigations and prosecutions of journalists for doing their jobs, stirring up the ugliest of class wars along the way.
It's our job to stir up ugly class wars.
He will relentlessly manipulate. For example, Trump's first news conference as president-elect last week featured a crowd of paid staffers who cheered his every statement, creating a false picture for viewers.
And what about all the photos of The Donald surrounded by a halo? Oh, wait...
Journalists are in for the fight of their lives. And they are going to have to be better than ever before, just to keep their phony-baloneydo their jobs.
The last resort: accurately reporting the news. No!!!

Former Black Panther BLASTS John Lewis, Democrat Party As 'Sellouts' (Video)

#2  Well worth watching. Interestingly, the single former Black Panther I know personally is a very nice, thoughtful, gentle woman who disagrees strongly with the idea that the group was violent rather than political. She was a member of the youth branch at her performing arts-oriented public high school, and it very much was a political talk shop rather than the violent inner circle history has recorded. She currently owns a small massage therapy business with several other massage therapists working under her. So this gentleman's personal story makes perfect sense.

DNC Chair Candidate: Trump 'Allegedly Elected'
[LI] Democrats are clearly planning to keep playing the "illegitimate" card on Donald Trump. Jehmu Greene is a FOX News contributor who has been active in the Democratic Party for years.

On Friday, she announced her candidacy for DNC chair. She also appeared on FOX and Friends at which time she used the word "allegedly" to describe Trump’s election.

From Real Clear Politics:

DNC Chair Candidate Jehmu Greene: Trump Was "Allegedly Elected," Dems Have "Mandate" To Resist

HOST: What do you make of these remarks from John Lewis? Obviously, he is a Civil Rights icon, but now is claiming that Donald Trump is not legitimate. What say you?

JEHMU GREENE: He’s truth telling. I don’t think this is about just Democrats. This is Americans. Anyone with a smidgen of common sense can remember Donald Trump looking into the camera encouraging Russia to hack into our electoral process, cheerleading them on. And the idea that whatever information these members of Congress are getting out of this classified briefing had them storm out of that room makes it very clear that the decisions that the FBI made that were unprecedented to get involved in the election against Hillary Clinton, pick a winner, pick a loser when they had so much information that was so damaging. What have we been talking about since this man was allegedly elected?

#4  When Gadaffi gave up his nuke program, the IAEA was handed blueprints for a Chinese missile warhead. The Libyans had received this from the Pakistani scientist AQ Khan. There were detailed handwritten notes in Urdu translating portions and describing fabrication down to the amount of torque to apply to each bolt.
The Chinese have provided nuclear weapons and missiles to North Korea and Pakistan. Neither country can manufacture a modern lathe. North Korea has only just begun bicycle manufacture. Neither would have nuclear missiles without China suppling the technology.

International-UN-NGOs
The world's obsessive hostility towards the Jews
Syria is dying, Islamists are murdering European civilians, ISIS and affiliated groups are on the rampage in the Middle East, food and water are in short supply in Africa. And so it is remarkable that the nations of the world have gathered against tiny Israel in order to dispossess Jews of what little land they have in order to create a twenty-third Arab state called Palestine.

Indeed, it is all the more remarkable when one considers the fact that the Palestinian Arabs have no historical, cultural or legal rights to the land of Israel.

That the Palestinian Arabs are endowed with so much international and economic patronage by the United Nations, the United Kingdom, the European Union and the Obama White House is testament to the world’s perpetual hatred towards the Jews. How did the Palestinians and their international backers manage to achieve such a feat? Why does the world revolve around the Palestinians?

...Kurdish independence, the Syrian crisis, chronic starvation in Africa, Islamic State, child sex slavery, and so on, are apparently (and shamefully) very low down on the world's list of priorities. Given that there are so many pressing issues, it is deliberately perverse of the nations to pursue the creation of an autocratic state (or worse still an Islamist republic) called Palestine, which will be the only place on the planet that is officially Judenrein, i.e. "cleansed of Jews."

It is clear that the world's desire to create an anti-Semitic Palestinian state ‐ regardless of the human cost and at the expense of more urgent issues ‐ is driven by an obsessive hostility towards the Jewish people and Jewish culture, as well as a hatred for Judaism. To put it another way, it is racially and religiously-inspired anti-Semitic bloodlust.

Turkish 747 cargo jet crashes on approach to Kyrgyzstan village, 37 dead
[Guardian] A Turkish cargo jet has crashed near Kyrgyzstan’s Manas airport, killing at least 37 people, most of them residents of a village struck by the Boeing 747 as it tried to land in dense fog, Kyrgyz officials said.

According to the airport administration, the plane was supposed to make a stopover at Manas, near the capital city Bishkek, on its way from Hong Kong to Istanbul. It crashed when trying to land in poor visibility at 7.31 am (0131 GMT) on Monday.

The plane ploughed for a few hundred metres through the village of Dacha-Suu, damaging some 15 buildings, said Mukhammed Svarov, head of crisis management centre at the emergencies ministry. At least 37 people had been killed, the ministry said.

Smoke was still thick in the area at 0600GMT and small fires burned in different parts of the village, but emergency services had nearly extinguished them.

Zumriyat Rezakhanova, a resident of Dacha-Suu, said the plane fell "right on the homes" where residents were sleeping.

Anti-Police Painting to Be Removed Permanently From Capitol Tunnel
[Free Beacon] A painting that depicts police officers as pigs and has been hanging in a tunnel of the Capitol will be permanently removed next week.

The painting was part of a congressional art competition and hung in the tunnel between the Cannon House Office Building and the Capitol. The artwork was sponsored by Rep. William Lacy Clay, Jr. (D., Mo.), who represents much of the St. Louis area, including Ferguson, Missouri. The painting by a then-high school student from Clay’s district depicts police officers as what appears to be pigs pointing guns at black men.

The artwork has been criticized by police groups nationwide. It received national attention after Rep. Duncan Hunter (R., Calif.) personally removed the piece last week and delivered it to Clay’s office. Clay then rehung the painting on Tuesday, only for it to be removed by another congressman, rehung by Clay once more, and removed again by two more lawmakers. Clay put up the artwork again, where it has stayed. However, someone placed a pro-police flag above it recently.

Rep. Dave Reichert (D., Wash.) filed a complaint on Wednesday over the artwork with the office of the Architect of the Capitol, who notified House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) that it would come down for good, the Hill reported. It was determined that the painting violated the art competition rules, which prohibit "subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature."

The painting will be removed on Tuesday.

Grading was based on spelling, grammar and structure, not content. Just as well, considering many read like a bad Spike Lee movie plot or Louis Farrakhan on a peyote bender. Others were simply heartbreaking.

I suspect this "art" has the same, albeit more technically advanced and socially impregnated origins.

Entitlement Programs gained tens of thousands of beneficiaries during Obama regime
All in accordance with the Dem vote buying plan.
[Free Beacon] Entitlement programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and food stamps have gained tens of thousands of beneficiaries under the Obama administration.

Medicaid, the program that provides health coverage for low-income individuals, greatly expanded during Obama’s time in office, largely due to its expansion in the Affordable Care Act.

When Obama took office in 2009, there were 60,880,000 Medicaid beneficiaries, according to the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission. As of March 2016, there were 74,059,221 enrollees, an increase of over 13 million.

"Historically, Medicaid eligibility has generally been limited to low-income children, pregnant women, parents of dependent children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities; however, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act included the ACA Medicaid expansion, which expands Medicaid eligibility to individuals under the age of 65 with income up to 133% of the federal poverty level at state option," explains the Congressional Research Service.

#4  Warm up the economy so there are more well-paying jobs, and many of those now drawing assistance won't need it anymore -- virtuous cycle stuff. Let the illegals continue to self-deport in fear of that monster, President Trump, as they have been in recent weeks, and those jobs will open up to those here legally; they, too, won't need assistance anymore. Reverse the definition of full time to the traditional 40 hours per week... and so forth.

And then far fewer government white collar workers will be needed to administer the programs.

[Independent] The head of MI6 used information obtained by former officer Christopher Steele in his Trump investigation, in a warning against Russian cyberattacks and attempts to subvert Western democracies, The Independent has learned.

Sir Alex Younger’s briefing notes for his first public speech as head of the Secret Intelligence Service contained some of the material supplied by Mr Steele, according to security sources. Drawing on the alleged hacking carried out by Moscow in the US presidential campaign, he warned of the danger facing Britain and Western European allies, and especially to elections due to be held next year.
Yes of course. When Labour loses, we'll simply blame the Russians, like the Yanks did.
Security sources stress that MI6 had extensive information, British and international, on the Russian threat apart from that of Mr Steele. But they pointed out that he is held in high regard and the contribution he provided was valuable.

In one of his recent tweets, Mr Trump described Mr Steele as a "failed spy". He also claimed in another tweet that "James Clapper [director of national intelligence] called me yesterday to denounce the false and fictitious report that was illegally circulated. Made up, phony facts. Too bad!"

Mr Steele had, in fact, a highly successful career in MI6, received a number of commendations and is highly regarded by both British and American intelligence agencies. Mr Clapper pointed out that what he had actually said was that the intelligence service "has not made any judgement that the information in this document is reliable".

Skipping down to para #8 for 'unconfirmed' CIA linkage.

Senior officials could not confirm media reports at the weekend that reassurance has been sought by London from the CIA that the identities of British agents in Russia will be protected in shared intelligence, with concerns about links between Mr Trump’s team and Moscow. One official said that the understanding was that unauthorised people should not have access to such detail in anything classified which is passed on.

I believe one can safely assume 'assurances' were discussed, but we can't know for certain because Christopher Steele is still on holiday.

#2  In other words, the CIA stated the same kinds of concerns about Mr. Trump, based on the invented file, to MI6 that they did to Israel. But MI6, not having Israel's insight into President Obama's Americans that the Israelis have, and being just as classist as the American elites they deal with, believe all as firmly as little children clapping their dear little hands to rosiness in an attempt to save Tinker Bell at the pantomime.

#3  Having scrolled further down the articles, it occurs to me this will go a fair way to undoing Prime Minister Theresa May's efforts with regard to the Paris anti-Israel summit to make up the deficit of goodwill her previous work around the UNSC anti-Israel thingy created. Unless she is silly enough to think that supporting Israel is the only thing he really cares about.

I note separately that being a successful spy for the British government is not at all like being a successful private political investigator in the private sector. What it takes to make the customer happy requires truth in the first case, while truthy will do in the second.

And if Mr. Clapper is indeed now saying that his people had merely never bothered to confirm the information rather than deeming it Russian disinformation, as has been reported, President Trump's first move needs to be to accept the resignations of all involved at all the "17 services" that were involved in the plot.

Trump Snaps Back At CIA's Brennan, Asks If He Was Leaker Of ‘Fake News'
[Daily Caller] GOP President-elect Donald Trump ratcheted up his war with the intelligence community Sunday by asking if CIA Director John Brennan himself was responsible for leaking a dossier of unverified information to the press about Trump’s alleged escapades in Russia.

After Brennan appeared on "Fox News Sunday" to call Trump’s comparison of the intelligence community to Nazi Germany "outrageous," Trump fired of a series of tweets, in which he questioned whether Brennan was personally behind BuzzFeed’s recent publication of a 35-page dossier of totally unverified information on Trump.

"What I do find outrageous is equating intelligence community with Nazi Germany," Brennan said earlier on Sunday. "I do take great umbrage with that and there is no basis for Mr. Trump to point fingers at the intelligence community for leaking information that was already available publicly."
"Already available information" is NOT a valid defense for dissemination.
Brennan said during that same interview that "there is no interest in undermining the president-elect."

But Trump doesn’t appear convinced, despite statements from Brennan and also from Director of National Intelligence James Clapper earlier this week that the intelligence community had nothing to do with the leak of the dossier, which BuzzFeed published last Tuesday. BuzzFeed has since been widely castigated for publishing the completely unverified dossier full of bizarre information about Trump’s alleged, scandalous activities in Russia.
Trump is "not convinced" because Flynn and others have already mapped the leaks.

Mosul Offensive News

PMU leader confident IS leader al-Baghdadi trapped in Nineveh

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is still in Nineveh as the extremist group is effectively trapped inside the province, according to a senior leader of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units).

PMUs are running a joint intelligence task force with the Joint Operations Command to track Baghdadi’s movements, Jawad al-Tleibawi was quoted as saying on Saturday. “Initial information with the intelligence bodies tell that ….Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi remains in Nineveh….as security forces impose control over the eastern side of Mosul, while the western side is totally isolated from Syrian territories,” he stated.

Army combs Mosul University after driving out Islamic State

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Forces continued on Sunday to comb Mosul University campus after they had driven Islamic State militants out on Saturday, a senior officer said.

Abdul-Wahab al-Saedi, a top commander of the force, said in statements on Sunday that the forces continue to comb the university’s buildings, and will move afterwards to invade other districts enlisted in the battles plan after finishing.

Mosul University was a major Islamic State stronghold in the eastern section of Mosul. Iraqi generals said, after the university was retaken, that government forces became in control of 90 percent of that area since U.S.-backed operations launched in October to free the city.

Islamic State militants still maintain strongholds in the west of the Tigris River, which halves the city. Iraqi forces managed a few days ago to reach the eastern bank for the first time since October.

IS top vigilante killed in western Mosul, civilians homes burned in east

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A senior Islamic State vigilante died in the western Mosul town of Tal Afar on Sunday, having succumbed to injuries sustained in an airstrike carried out four days earlier, according to a local source.

“Daesh (Islamic State) lost three of its senior leaders during the current month in Tal Afar due to successful airstrikes,” the source told Alsumaria News, requesting anonymity.

IS has relied on religious vigilantes to observe civilians’ commitment to its extreme religious rules, occasionally imposing harsh punishments, reportedly amounting to death, on violators.

In eastern Mosul, another local source said the extremist group set fire to five houses in the districts of Mohandessin and Andalus after their residents declined to pay donations to the group’s combatants.

Iraqi Forces retake northern, eastern Mosul districts from IS

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government forces recaptured on Sunday two districts in the north and east of Mosul from Islamic State militants as operations come closer to declaring a total control over the eastern section of the city.

The army’s Counter-Terrorism Forces and the Defense Ministry’s media service, the War Media Cell, said troops recaptured the districts of Kafa’at al-Thaniya and Andalus in the north and the east from Islamic State militants, raising Iraqi flags above buildings at both areas.

Islamic State attacks civilians in Mosul using drones

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) The Islamic State extremist group is using drones to drop bombs and explosives on the residents of the liberated areas in Mosul, the Telegragh reported on Saturday.

The Telegraph report stated that the self-proclaimed Islamic State group previously used drones for surveillance purpose, including local-made large fixed wing craft.

“Until recently though there was little evidence they had developed their use further but a series of recent strikes has now confirmed that they have developed the capability to drop 40 millimeter grenades,” the report explained.

Civilians are an easy target for these attacks, especially in the recently liberated areas in Mosul, where eight persons were wounded due one of these attacks last week.

One of the wounded, Hussein, 14 year-old boy, said, “I was shopping with my family when a small plane belonging to the Islamic State dropped a grenade on us.”

Another wounded man also said that he saw the drone drop explosives, while Iraqi Special Forces medic Colonel Khalil Jawad said that this is the first time he has heard of the Islamic State dropping explosives from a drone.

Security forces thwart Islamic State’s attack on Hadba, Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Military Intelligence Directorate announced on Sunday foiling an attack launched by the Islamic State group on al-Hadba area using a booby-trapped vehicle.

The directorate said in a press statement, “In coordination with Nineveh Operations, our forces foiled an attack, using a booby-trapped vehicle, launched by the Islamic State on the security troops in al-Hadba area, in Nineveh Province.”

“Security forces managed to kill the suicide bomber, who was driving the booby-trapped vehicle, and confiscated the vehicle,” the statement added.

Counter-Terrorism forces liberate Andalus neighborhood in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Commander of We Are Coming, Nineveh Operations, Lieutenant General Abdel Amir Yarallah, announced liberating al-Andalus neighborhood in eastern Mosul, and raising Iraqi flag over its buildings.

Yarallah, in a press statement, said, “Iraqi Counter-Terrorism forces liberated al-Andalus neighborhood and raised Iraqi flag over its buildings.”

Earlier today, We Are Coming, Nineveh Operations Command announced liberating al-Kafa’at al’Thaniyah neighborhood in eastern Mosul.

Iraqi joint security forces, backed by Army Aviation and international coalition forces, continue the battle to liberate Mosul that was launched in October 2016, to retake the city from the Islamic State’s grip.

4000 refugees left Mosul in 24 hours: aid group

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Four-thousand Iraqi refugees have migrated from Mosul as Iraqi groups become close to clearing half of the city from Islamic State militants, an aid group said.

Eyad Rafed, a member of the Iraqi Red Crescent Society, said those had fled areas at the northeast and southeast to locations held by Iraqi government forces, and were relocated to refugee camps in the east and south of the city after coordinating with relief teams.

“The humanitarian situation in refugee camps is getting more difficult, especially with increases in refugees coming from areas that are witnessing military operations in the eastern side of Mosul,” he said in press statements.

Abu Bakr Kanaan, who heads a committee handling refugees returning to Mosul, was quoted by Anadolu Agency as saying that more than 20.000 families have so far been returned to liberated areas in Mosul.

Islamic State chief demotes eastern Mosul commanders over combat failures

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State’s supreme leader has stripped group commanders in eastern Mosul of leadership due to dramatic losses to Iraqi government forces over the past two weeks, a local source has reported.

A source told Alsumaria News that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi withdrew the “emir” designation from all leaders of the extremist group in the eastern part of the city due to “delinquency and escaping” at battlefields in face of advancing Iraqi government troops.

“Baghdad has proscribed the occupation of any leading position by emirs in the eastern section, and to instead deploy them to the frontlines as regular fighters as a sort of punishment,” said the source, who asked not to be identified.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a aircraft and advisers from a US-led military coalition, launched two weeks ago the second phase of a major campaign that started in October to retake Mosul from IS militants. Since then, reports have been recurrent about divisions, infighting and accusations of treason among the group’s leaderships.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria fighting threatens deal to fix damaged Damascus water source
[IraqiNews] The Syrian army and allied militia clashed with rebels in Wadi Barada near Damascus on Sunday, threatening to disrupt planned repair works to a pumping station that supplies most of the capital’s water, a war monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the army and the allied Lebanese militia Hezbollah had made some gains against rebels in the Wadi Barada area. Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
reached the outskirts of the Ain al-Fija town, where the water springs are located, the British-based war monitor reported.

Artillery shelling by government forces killed seven people and maimed several others in the nearby Deir Qanoun village, it said.

Wadi Barada, a mountainous valley northwest of Damascus, has become a major battlefront in the Syrian war, and the damage to the pumping station has caused severe water shortages in the capital since the beginning of the year.

The governor of the Damascus Countryside province said on Friday that engineers had entered Ain al-Fija to repair the pumping station, as part of a wider agreement that included the departure of some rebels from Wadi Barada and a settlement with others who would remain there.

But the plan was derailed on Saturday evening, after gunnies killed the head of a negotiation team who was overseeing the agreement and repairs, the Observatory said.

A military media unit run by Hezbollah said the army captured some positions overlooking Ain al-Fija on Saturday, after taking two nearby villages in recent days and edging closer towards the water facility.

The water spring was knocked out of service in late December. The United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
has said it was damaged because "infrastructure was deliberately targeted", without saying who was responsible, leaving four million people in Damascus without safe drinking water supplies.

The U.N. warned the shortages could lead to waterborne disease outbreaks.

Rebels and activists have said government bombardment damaged the spring. The government said krazed killer groups polluted it with diesel, forcing the state to cut supplies.

Wadi Barada has become the main focus of fighting between forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
, backed by Russia and Iran, and rebel groups seeking to oust him, after the government took full control of Aleppo city last month.

Fighting in Wadi Barada has tarnished a shaky nationwide ceasefire that began on Dec 30., brokered by Russia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, which is one of the main supporters of many rebel groups.

The United Nations estimates 45,000 people live in the Wadi Barada area, and thinks at least 7,000 people have been displaced form the area in recent fighting.

Duterte: Bomb Abu Sayyaf, even with hostages
[Inquirer] Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte has ordered troops to bomb Moro militants who flee with their captives in a bid to stop a wave of kidnappings at sea, calling the loss of civilian lives in such an attack "collateral damage."

Duterte previously stated he had told his Indonesian and Malaysian counterparts that their forces could blast away as they pursued rebels who abducted sailors in waters where the three countries converge and brought their hostages to the southern Philippines.

In a speech in Davao City on Saturday, Duterte said he had instructed the navy and the coast guard that "if there are kidnappers and they’re trying to escape, bomb them all. They say ‘hostages.’ Sorry, collateral damage."

The president said such an approach would enable the government to get even with the ransom-seeking Moro extremists. He said, "You can't gain mileage for your wrongdoing, I will really have you blasted."

"So, really, don’t allow yourselves to be kidnapped," Duterte advised potential victims.

Nephew of Muslim Brotherhood’s Ali Salabi killed in Benghazi fighting
[Libya Herald] The nephew of Ali Salabi, the man considered to be the ideological brains and real head of the Moslem Brüderbund in Libya, has been killed in Benghazi while fighting with the Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council.

A family member today confirmed to this newspaper that 17 yer-old Mohammed Salabi, died in fighting with the Libyan National Army three days ago. The circumstances of his death are unclear.

His father Osama Salabi is a leading holy man and his uncle Ali last March backed the Libya-Libya dialogue insisting that Libyans were moderates.

Salabi said that if Libya was to destroy the growing threat of terrorism there had to be a national unity government agreed by all Libyans, not one appointed by foreigners who were not interested in the good of Libya.

China-Japan-Koreas
No indications of imminent ICBM launch at N. Korean launch site
Recent satellite imagery shows no indications that North Korea is close to carrying out its threat to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile, but the communist nation is capable of conducting a launch at any time, a U.S. website monitoring the North said.

"While North Korea threatens to test an intercontinental ballistic missile ... commercial satellite imagery from November 2016 through January 2017 of the Sohae Satellite Launching Station provides no evidence of an imminent launch or engine test," 38 North said in a recent report.

"However, the site does remain capable of conducting a launch or engine test at any time and with little warning," it said, adding that activity at the Sohae launch facility over the past three months indicates both long-term preparations for an engine test and further infrastructure developments, including the paving of roads, constructing support and warehouse facilities, and continuing housing development.

The Sohae site, also known as the "Tongchang-ri" site in the North's northwest, is where the North's main rocket launch facilities are. The North has carried out a series of long-range rocket launches from the sites, including two successful ones that put a satellite into orbit in late 2012 and again in February last year.

North Korean leader Fat Boy Kim Jong-un said in his New Year's Day address that the country has entered the final stage of preparation to test-fire an ICBM, a thinly veiled threat that Pyongyang is close to developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the continental U.S.

U.S. officials said the country is fully capable of defending itself and allies against North Korean missiles, with Defense Secretary Ash Carter saying the U.S. would shoot down a missile if it were coming toward the U.S. or allies. Incoming President Donald Trump has also vowed to stop the North from mastering ICBM capabilities, saying Pyongyang's development of a missile capable of striking the U.S. "won't happen."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Russia's Chechnya chief says over 50 suspected militants detained
[Ynet] Ramzan Kadyrov, the hardline pro-Moscow head of Russia's Northern Caucasus Republic of Chechnya, said on Sunday that more than 50 suspected gunnies were detained in the biggest sting operation of recent years.

Moscow has waged two wars against separatists in the predominantly Moslem region since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The region is now ruled by Kadyrov, a former rebel fighter now loyal to President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
Civil rights activists accuse Kadyrov of arbitrary arrests of dissidents.

Kadyrov said on his Instagram account that a group directed by a Chechen-born myrmidon based in Syria had been targeted.
That'd be ISIS, I assume.
"As of now, all the band-group was neutralised, more than 50 of its participants were delivered to cop shoppes," Kadyrov said.

Another major loss of migrant lives
[Libya Herald] Despite bad weather, the migrant tide toward Europe increases and more than 100 refugees are feared drowned off the Libyan coast after their boat capsized yesterday. Another eight were confirmed as dead

Flavio Di Giacomo of the International Organisation for Migration said the boat had been carrying 110 migrants colonists and only four were known to have survived. These had been rescued some 50 kilometres off the Libyan coast.

IOM figures show that so far this year arrivals in Italia from Libya had more than doubled from 268 in 2016 to 729 by last Thursday.

This latest in the long list of migrant tragedies comes on the eve of an EU summit in Brussels which will once again try and tackle the flows of migrants colonists from Libya and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
The Italian government is being condemned for its idea of returning migrants colonists to Libya which is already holding thousand of largely Sub-Saharan Africans in squalid detention centres which appal visitors, such as UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler. Kobler said today that he was deeply shocked at the latest loss of migrant lives.

Medecins Sans Frontieres, one of the Non-Government Organisations involved in collecting people from their frail rubber rafts and decrepit fishing boats has called for an end to the carnage. It said today that despite the winter seas, migrants colonists were still trying to cross. It called for the EU to provide safe passage for them.

The latest migrant disaster meant an French-Italian rescue operation directing naval vessels, planes and aircraft and at least one merchant ship to the area where the migrant craft sank.

Since Friday night, at least 800 people have been rescued from flimsy craft as they attempted to reach the Italian coastline.

Jahangir first ‘New JMB leader’ arrested alive
[Dhaka Tribune] Jahangir Alam, more commonly known as Rajib Gandhi among militants, is the first New JMB leader that police have arrested alive who has direct connection with Gulshan terror attack.

Officials of the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crimes (CTTC) unit of police believe that this arrest is pivotal for terror investigations as Jahangir can provide information that could tie up many loose ends.

“Gandhi is the first New JMB leader arrested alive who was involved in the planning of Gulshan attack. This development will help us make significant progress in the case,” said Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam, chief of CTTC.

Furthermore, Jahangir’s arrest was essential for the law enforcers to stop further stray attacks, he told reporters yesterday morning.

Starting off as a cook for Abdul Awal, son-in-law of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) chief Shayakh Abdur Rahman, Jahangir went on to join New JMB and become a trusted deputy of Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury, the group’s coordinator who also orchestrated Gulshan attack.

“So we expect him to provide crucial and brand new information on both factions as well,” said a CTTC source.

A CTTC team arrested Jahangir at Elenga bus stand in Tangail on late Friday night. Investigators believe he was one of the key planners of the terror attack on Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, Dhaka on July 1 last year.

Twenty-three people, including 17 foreigners and two police officers, were killed in the attack. International terrorist group Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack.

War plane blows up over Ganfouda as fighting rages
[Libya Herald] A Libyan air force Mig 23 crashed today in Benghazi during an Arclight airstrike on Ganfouda. The pilot and company-pilot ejected safely.

A Libyan National Army front man said the warplane had suffered a technical failure with one account saying it had went kaboom! while firing rockets. The front man denied an earlier report credited to a LNA commander that the aircraft had been hit by ground fire. "If we say an aircraft has been hit it has been hit" he said, "If we say it was technical failure, it was technical failure".

The Mig’s pilot Younis al-Dinali and his co-pilot survived the kaboom. However four more members of the Saiqa Special forces, including an unnamed field commander, died today in Ganfouda. Two members of the unit were killed yesterday.

In the other hard boyz enclaves in the city, Sabri and Suq al-Hut, army engineers appear to have almost completed a series of sand berms that block roads and open ground surrounding both these downtown districts. There are unconfirmed reports that the LNA is preparing an assault.

Pakistan will not tolerate India's 'hegemony' in region, says Sartaj Aziz
[DAWN] Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj PrunefaceAziz
...Adviser to Pak Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on National Security and Foreign Affairs, who believes in good jihadis and bad jihadis as a matter of national policy...
said that India's attitude "that it will not have a dialogue with Pakistain" is unreasonable, and that "Pakistain will not compromise itself to establish peace with India".

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted to establish himself as a "hegemonic power" in the region and his entire election campaign was built around an "anti-Pakistain sentiment", Aziz said while talking to DawnNews on Sunday.

He accused India of hampering the efforts Pakistain had put forth for holding a dialogue to establish peace between the two countries, saying Modi "does not want to discuss the Kashmire issue except for examining the terrorism there".

Aziz said that India tried to divert the focus on problems at the Line of Control and pushed the "terrorism rhetoric" when the Hizbul Mujahideen leader Burhan Wani was murdered.

He said the world has "seen the human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
violations by India" in the region and various reputable rights group have reported them.

"We will not have a dialogue [with India] if there is no discussion on Kashmire," he asserted, saying Pakistain will never accept "India's hegemony".

"Pakistain will not compromise itself to establish peace with India," the adviser maintained.

Aziz hoped that once the provincial elections in India are over, "its attitude toward holding dialogue with Pakistain will change".

Terror and the Mexico border: How big a threat?
[The Christian Science Monitor] Conservatives and the Obama administration have long disagreed about the threat of terrorists coming across the Mexico border. Data suggest the threat is not insignificant. Now, the Trump administration is poised to make it a priority.

Islamic militants purchase a nuclear device from a sympathetic official in Pakistan and ship the weapon on the flip side of a drug trafficking route through West Africa to South America. Next, the package is smuggled north to the United States-Mexico border.

Although this sounds like the plot line of a spy thriller, it is a scenario laid out in an online magazine produced by the Islamic State, the apocalyptic Syria-based terror group also known as ISIS.

"From there it’s just a quick hop through a smuggling tunnel and ... presto, they’re mingling with another 12 million ’illegal’ aliens in America with a nuclear bomb in the trunk of their car," the 2015 ISIS article says.

The debate over security along the US-Mexico border isn’t just about the millions of unauthorized migrants who have crossed the international boundary seeking work and better lives. And it isn’t just about the drug smugglers and assorted other criminals who routinely use the border as an easy back door into America.

There is potentially a greater threat from a porous southern border.
What a relief that the grownups are taking charge again. Truly God watches over drunks, fools, and the United States of America when President Obama was running things.

#4  I'm sure it has been attempted. Just that the FBI (and by extension, Homeland Security) has rather good detectors and given the nature of nuclear bombs, both nuclear explosive and dirty types, I'm sure the agencies involved is keeping it very quiet to prevent panics.

How good are the detectors? FBI once detected and caught a guy going down I-5 in Washington State, turns out he was transporting his pet cat that just had radiation treatment for feline cancer.

So I'll say it's very difficult, if not impossible, to smuggle nuclear anything into USA without massive clearances from various agencies.

70 percent of Turkish navy vessels used in coup on July 15: Indictment
[Hurriyet Daily News] Some 70 percent of Turkish navy vessels played a role in coup activities on July 15 night as their personnel were previously informed about the attempt by the orchestrators of the failed bid, according to Ankara prosecutors.

In an indictment sent to an Ankara court of serious crimes on Jan. 13, prosecutors who are seeking sentences against 72 naval suspects, said a total of 29 military vessels at the Gölcuk, Aksaz, Mersin, Istanbul, Karadeniz Ereglisi and Foca naval bases were mobilized at 9 p.m., 20 minutes before the first notification about the coup reached the command, to implement "their plans to gather personnel" for the coup activities.

The indictment said 29 vessels, amounting to 70 percent of the main vessels, particularly those in the Marmara area, were advancing in areas of mobile phone reception and that most of them could have followed the coup activities from visual media such as TV on the vessels.

Some 71 of the 72 suspects are charged with attempting to change the constitutional order, attempting to abolish the Turkish Parliament and attempting to abolish the Turkish government and face three aggravated life terms each.

In the first days of 2017, the lira's value declined so rapidly that even the Turkish Central Bank’s actions could not stop the drop. On Jan. 10, the bank lowered the level of foreign exchange reserves so it could add $1.5 billion of liquidity to stabilize the lira's value.

The Financial Times observed on Jan. 10, “Turkey appears closer to a full-blown currency crisis than at any point since the ruling AK [Justice and Development] party took power in 2002. In the past three months, the lira has lost almost a fifth of its value against the dollar, as both global and domestic investors lose confidence in their country’s economic prospects.”

Rada continues raids on Tripoli’s criminal dens
[Libya Herald] The Rada (Special Deterrence) Force continued its raids on criminal dens in the ’’Gragsha’’ area of the Girgarish district of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
yesterday. Rada has been conducting a series of campaigns in the area against alcohol, drugs and prostitution dens. It has also been conducting operations against kidnap gangs.

It said that the area has been ’’out of control’’ in terms of security for ’’many years’’ where many African ’’gangs’’ had set up dens of illicit trade. Rada also reported that it had received ’’repeated complaints’’ from residents who had admitted defeat in protecting their children and homes from the danger of these gangs.

It reported the arrest of large numbers of African gangs made up of illegal migrants colonists and confiscated large quantities of alcohol. During the raid, the gangs attempted to impede Rada’s progress by blocking the narrow roads in the area with various barricades, including the use of cars. Rada used bulldozers to clear the way and to demolish some of the buildings used as dens.

Most of the Illegal migrants colonists that were tossed in the slammer

were handed over to the Counter-illegal Migration Authority, but those believed to be part of illicit trade gangs were held under arrest, reported Rada.

It will be recalled that Rada has received direct official backing from the Faiez Serraj Presidency Council/Government of National Accord but has also been involved in various territorial battles with other militias/security agencies and so-called Islamist militias with a different Islamic interpretation ‐ in a battle of dominance within Tripoli.

Rada is also fighting snuffies such as Ansar Sharia/ISIS and the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB), including holding some of these groups’ prisoners, which has created it enmities, including that of the Mufti Saddek Ghariani.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israelis, Palestinians sign deal to jointly improve West Bank water supply
If the Palestinians repudiate their recognition of Israel, this agreement will be stuck in a file somewhere while the Israelis take care of projects only on their own side of the line... wherever that line might move to.
[IsraelTimes] Renewal of Joint Water Committee is fourth key infrastructure agreement signed between Israel and PA in past year and a half.

Israel and the Paleostinian Authority signed an agreement Sunday to renew cooperation in water development after a six-year hiatus.

Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, head of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) office, and the Paleostinian Authority’s Civil Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh signed an agreement to restart the Israeli‐Paleostinian Joint Water Committee.

The committee is tasked with developing and modernizing the water infrastructure in the West Bank, allowing better water access to Paleostinian towns and villages, maintaining existing infrastructure and approving new projects. It hasn’t met in six years.

Created in 1995 as part of the Oslo II interim peace deal, the committee was originally intended to be a temporary mechanism lasting five years.

Key topics under discussion include increasing water supplies to the West Bank and Gazoo, as well as approving drilling new wells and updating water rates.

The agreement was signed in winter in order to allow the committee to be fully operational when water demand is at its highest in the summer months.

The parties also announced that the two sides have approved a joint strategic planning mechanism that will operate until 2040, including new infrastructure ventures to deal with expected population growth.

Mordechai said the agreement shows it is possible to reach "understandings and agreements when dealing with practical, bilateral issues, free of external influences, dealing with natural resources and other infrastructure issues that affect the entire population."

The latest agreement is one of four such cooperation agreements signed between Israel and the PA over the past year and a half. Previous ones dealt with electricity, mail and 3G phone service.

Use of nuclear weapons in South Asia can’t be ruled out: Biden
[DAWN] South Asia is among a few regions in the world where nuclear weapons could be used in a regional conflict, the outgoing US Vice President Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...
warned on Saturday.

In a recent speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Washington, Mr Biden hoped that the incoming Trump administration would continue America’s leading role in reducing nuclear weapons around the globe.

"Not just North Korea, but Russia, Pakistain, and others have made counterproductive moves that only increase the risk that nuclear weapons could be used in a regional conflict in Europe, South Asia, or East Asia," he said.

"Working with Congress, the next administration will have to navigate these dangers and -- I hope -- continue leading the global consensus to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our world."

Mr Biden urged Republican and Democratic politicians in the US Congress to rise above party politics and deal with the nuclear issue with the seriousness it deserves.

"Nuclear security is too important to be a party policy, for our nation and for the world. Although we no longer live in the daily dread of nuclear confrontation, the dangers we face today require a bipartisan spirit," he said.

Europe
Lack of Jobs in Africa Could Spark Massive Migration to Europe
Original de Welt article is here if you read German.
The economies of the developing world cannot keep pace with an increase in population, meaning millions of people from Africa will likely migrate to Europe, a new report has found.

The report, from the Geneva-based International Labour Organisation (ILO), states that the economies of developing nations in Arica, Asia, and South America cannot keep pace with the number of young people entering the workforce. The result, especially in Africa, will mean that many are ready to migrate and look for jobs elsewhere – and their main target will likely be Europe Die Welt reports.
For some reason Africans can't seem to manufacture jobs as fast as they manufacture people...
Economists expect that the number of unemployed in African states will skyrocket, as the slow growth of African economies may only produce a few hundred thousand jobs over the next year. By contrast, the ILO expects there to be millions of young people entering the job market across the African continent.

Unemployment in Africa currently stands at around eight percent, but the total number of those unemployed will rise by over a million from 37.1 million to 38.3 million, of which nine million are in North Africa.

In sub-Saharan Africa, which has some of the highest birth rates in the world, an estimated one-third of all people say they are willing to migrate for work. Some migrants are willing to look for work in neighbouring countries, but for many the ideal destination is Europe; specifically Germany given its current status as the strongest economy in the European Union.

Though Germany’s economy is largely positive, the rest of the European Union is struggling to create enough well-paying jobs. In Spain around 400,000 jobs have been created, but many of them are part-time or low skilled, resulting in many young people not able to find careers that match their educational background.
Made worse by all the university grads who refuse to take a job that doesn't mandate having a degree in their specialty...
The report also notes that almost half of the unemployed people in the European Union have been looking for work for the past twelve months or more.

The ILO report’s findings reflect those of an Austrian Army Intelligence report which estimated the possibility of millions of African economic migrants flooding into Europe by 2020.

Frontex, the European Union border agency, has also noted the trend towards increased African economic migrantion. Last year they released a report warning that West African countries could soon eclipse the Middle East and Central Asia in terms of the number of migrants coming from those regions.

2016 saw the largest wave of migrants crossing from the African continent into Italy over the Mediterranean sea, but Italian lawmakers have vowed to tackle the issue and begin deportations of migrants who fail their asylum claims or are migrating for purely economic reasons.

Iranian President scrambling to sell nuke deal as 'Win'
Iranian President Hassan Rohani was riding a wave of optimism one year ago. The long-negotiated nuclear deal with world powers he had sold to Iranians as an end to their economic woes was finally being implemented.

But as the first anniversary of implementation day approaches on January 16, Rohani has been saddled by the high expectations he set, as Iran's economy continues to struggle and the great boost in foreign investment and other benefits he envisioned has so far failed to materialize. With hard-liners seizing on the opportunity to criticize Rohani for a deal they opposed from Day One, the relatively moderate president is once again scrambling to sell the advantages of the deal to the Iranian people.

Rohani has been accused of overhyping the agreement and being duped by Washington and five other world powers at the negotiating table. In many ways, it mirrors the situation in the United States, where supporters have fended off consistent opposition to the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action (JCPOA), in which Tehran agreed to curtail its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, since it was signed in July 2015. With President-elect Donald Trump preparing to take office, his campaign promises to rework a deal he portrays as poorly negotiated and bad for the American people have cast a pall on the future of the JCPOA.

Rohani, who is expected to run for another term in Iran's May presidential election and who has banked a lot of his political capital on the deal, has responded to his critics by touting the agreement's "win-win outcome." He has urged Iranians to remain patient, promising that the benefits of the deal are "appearing."

Indeed, the main economic indicators point to improvement in Iran. Economic growth is projected to reach 4.3 percent and 4.8 percent in 2016 and 2017, respectively, compared to 0.5 percent in 2015. The effort to bring inflation to under two digits has seen success and the fiscal deficit has fallen.

But that is only part of the picture. The Iranian currency, the rial, hit a record low against the dollar in recent weeks, prompting fears that efforts to boost the exports of industrial goods will suffer and anticipated foreign goods will be prohibitively costly. The unemployment rate is on the rise, reaching 11.3 percent in 2016 compared to 10.8 in 2015.

In a nutshell, the limited economic progress Rohani's government has made has yet to trickle down to the average Iranian household in terms of jobs, salaries, and the prices of basic goods. This is something that none other than Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has pointed out, saying in August that Iranians had yet to see a "tangible effect" in their daily lives.

Rohani has had to contend with internal resistance from hard-liners, including clerics, the judiciary, and the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), which is estimated to control much of the economy. Meanwhile, Khamenei has sharpened his criticism. He has continued to emphasize a "resistance economy" aimed at boosting domestic production for export and warned against Western "infiltration" by way of the agreement.

"Rohani is the lightning rod for the economic issue and the nuclear deal, so if they ever go south, the supreme leader can blame Rohani, and that's where we are right now," says Scott Lucas, an Iran specialist at the University of Birmingham in the U.K. "The two men had a pragmatic relationship where each needed the other at a certain point. But the value of each to the other is quickly running out."

America's Next Secret Weapon (That Can Paralyze a City): Electromagnetic Pulse Artillery Shells
[NationalInterest] If the U.S. Army has its way, America’s next secret weapon may be an electromagnetic pulse artillery shell that paralyzes an enemy city.

These special shells won’t carry high explosive. Instead they will emit EMP bursts, or some other non-kinetic technology, to disrupt the computers, radio communications, Internet links and other ties that bind modern societies. And do so without creating any physical damage.
Guess they found some "Atomic Annie's" or Neutron bombage ready for repurposing.

Iraq
Ruritanians Unknown individuals attack house of IS leader in Mosul
Unidentified individuals attacked the house of an Islamic State’s senior leader, north of the city of Mosul, a local source told Shafaaq News on Sunday. The source said, “Unidentified individuals attacked the house of Omran Abu Mariam, the Islamic State’s leader in Diwan al-Harb (War Council), in al-Arabi neighborhood, north of Mosul, using hand grenades.”

“No casualties were reported so far, but the terrorist group started to lose its control over many areas in Mosul,” the source added on condition of anonymity.

Iraqi forces have made rapid progress in the battle to liberate Mosul, which was launched nearly three months ago, backed by the US-led international coalition, in order to retake the city that was captured by the Islamic State in June 2014.

Mosul University fully liberated by Iraqi troops, military says
U.S.-backed Iraqi government troops on Sunday fully liberated the sprawling complex of Mosul University, an Iraqi military spokesman said, a major step in the massive operation to retake the Islamic State group-held city of Mosul.

The spokesman for the Joint Military Command, Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool, declared the campus was under the full control of Iraqi special forces, officially known as the Counter Terrorism Service, who raised the Iraqi flag over its buildings.

The troops searched campus buildings and removed bombs left by IS militants, Brig. Gen. Haider Fadhil of the special forces said. Fadhil added that the troops also entered the nearby Andalus neighborhood, which he expected would be fully retaken later in the day.

Iraqi forces had entered the university grounds Friday and managed to secure more than half of the campus the next day amid tough resistance from IS militants, who mainly deployed sniper and mortar fire to slow down the advancing troops.

Sunday's progress is the latest in a string of swift territorial gains in recent weeks by the U.S.-backed Iraqi military. Some 30,000 troops — a force that includes not only Iraq's conventional army but an array of other armed groups, including Shiite and Sunni paramilitary troops and Kurdish fighters — are taking part in the Mosul offensive which begun October 17.

The Islamic State group captured Mosul in 2014 along with nearly a third of Iraqi territory and large parts of neighboring Syria. Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul is the last major ISIS urban bastion in the country.

Secret details emerge on Iran’s Cyber Army
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A report by Al Arabiya has revealed the secrets of the Iranian electronic army and its intelligence and cyber activities against states and institutions.

It also examines the details behind the murder of Mohammad Hussein Tajik, its former commander.

Tajik was sacked from his post, detained and tortured over accusations of spying and leaking information to the opposition Green Movement inside Iran, according to sources confirmed by Al Arabiya.

One of those sources is journalist and reformist activist Roohollah Zam. According to him, Tajik was one of his most important sources.

Zam is close to the Green Movement and currently resides in La Belle France.

Iran’s Ed Snowden?
During an exclusive interview with Al Arabiya, Zam said he did not believe the leaking of information was the main reason behind the murder, adding that if Tajik had left Iran and decided to work against the regime, he would have become "Iran’s Snowden".

But Iran’s security apparatus would have never allowed someone with as much insider information as Tajik to ever leave the country, according to Zam.

Tajik had said on multiple occasions that that he did not intend to leave Iran before his trial was over.

Inner workings of Iran’s cyber attacks
Zam said that the Khaybar center for information technology was established in 2011, adding that its units carried out several operations against the United States such as attacking a dam, a number of banks and power stations.

He noted that as a result of those activities, four Iranian hackers were sanctioned.

The Khaybar center also hacked Saudi banks, the Saudi kingdom’s statistics center, caused a 12-hour power cut in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and attacked a number of Israeli institutions and satellites, Zam said.

Tajik’s father, also named Mohammed and known by his nickname Hajj Vali, is one of the old members of the Iranian intelligence ministry, Zam said, adding that he was one of the first to take over the Savak in 1979 following the revolution.

During the 1980s, Hajj Vali and some of his comrades traveled to an Arab country and built a secret network that works for the Iranian intelligence, Zam added.

That network included three murderous Moslem figures who graduated from universities in Cairo and Pakistain.

Zam also said that if Tajik had not been close to him, his murder would have remained a secret, adding that Tagyk’s father even detained and tortured his ex-wife ‐ Tagyk’s mother - and broke her neck because she spoke about her son’s murder.

Russia upgrading its Syrian facilities.
Russia plans to improve and expand its naval and air bases in Syria, the Interfax news agency reported on Sunday, citing an unnamed source, as Moscow cements its presence in the Middle Eastern country, its only overseas military deployment.

The source told Interfax that Russia will start repairing a second runway at Hmeimin air base near Latakia, while the Tartus naval base will be upgraded in order to handle bigger ships such as cruisers.

The source also told Interfax that Russia will still deploy S-300 surface-to-air defence systems and Bastion coastal missile launchers in Tartus.

President Vladimir Putin has announced a partial withdrawal of Russian forces from Syria, where they have been helping forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. But Moscow wants to retain a permanent presence both in Hmeimin and Tartus.

The Grand Turk
Is this the end of the republic and Islamism?
[Hurriyet Daily News] Paradoxically, the end of the secular republic in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
also marks the end of Islamism or Islamist politics in Turkey and elsewhere. The Turkish Parliament is currently voting on a constitutional change that will usher in a so-called Turkish type of presidential system, or "President of the Republic System" as the governing party dubs it. This system is nothing but an authoritarian executive regime that not only promises less democracy, but also hints at the end of the secular regime once established. The supporters of the Islamist ruling party have already started to question the legitimacy of the secular political system, suggesting "a native sort of alternative democracy" more openly than before.

We democrats and I, for one, supported the Islamists’ critique of the rigid understanding and implementation of secularism in Turkey, especially in the 1990s. It was all in the name of democracy to challenge the idea of rigid republican secularism, since rigid republicanism refused to recognize the rights and freedoms of religious conservatives. Both in Turkey and elsewhere, the debate about the "republican emphasis on secularism against democratic rights and freedoms" has been a major intellectual and political issue for a long time. At the time, the Islamists who presented themselves as "moderates and democrats" denounced not only violence and radicalism, but also the idea of an Islamic state. At the end of the 1990s, the majority of Turkey’s Islamists further denounced their ex-Islamist politics and declared themselves to be on the center right as "Conservative Democrats." The early 2000s were the years of the triumph of the happy idea of not only THE compatibility of Islam and democracy, but even the compatibility of Islamism and democracy. It was so especially after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 when Islamist movements needed to distance themselves from radical Islam in general and al-Qaeda in particular.

The dream ended with the delusion of the Arab Spring, especially after Islamist rulers, which came to power after the so-called spring, turned out not only to be ineffective but also authoritarian in Egypt and even in Tunisia. The other major disappointment was the failure of the "Turkish model" after the ruling Islamist party abandoned "conservative democracy" and slid toward authoritarian politics. Now we have two types of Islamist politics; on one hand, there are radical violent Islamist groups, and on the other, we have Islamist authoritarianism which failed in Egypt but succeeded in Turkey. The case of Egypt has been disastrous since the Islamist government was not defeated and followed by democratic politics but was ousted in a military coup, presaging authoritarian military rule. Fortunately, Turkey survived a coup attempt in July last year, but the victory of democratic resistance against the coup could not be harnessed to democratize Turkey. On the contrary, it was used to further legitimize authoritarian politics under emergency rule.

Nevertheless, we can hardy call it success in the name of Islamism, since the whole affair ended with the "ordinary politics of nationalist and religious authoritarianism." The starting point of Islamist politics was to challenge the politics of modernity in the name of justice and dignity, but ended up producing the worst version of modern politics. Islamists managed to challenge the power of the secular republican system and have come close to ending it altogether in Turkey, but only at the cost of surrendering themselves to nationalist authoritarianism with more religious flavor rather than challenging the politics of modernity altogether. It is also true for Islamism in general, since it proved unable to suggest any alternative for a better future for Moslems and humanity.

The confession comes a month after a report by independent research group Conflict Armament Research (CAR) suggested that there is an arms "pipeline" that extends from Iran and Yemen.

The Chairman of the Qatari National Committee for Reconstruction of Gazoo, Muhammad al-Amadi called the Acting Director of the Paleostinian Energy Authority Zafer Milhem, and told him Qatar agreed to pay four million dollars a month over the next three months, the Hamas-linked site Pal Info Center reported.

Paleostinian Authority Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah confirmed the $12 million deal in statement to the official PA news outlet Wafa. He attributed the deal’s success to Abbas’s "continual communication" with Qatar.

The two million residents of Gazoo require around 450-500 megawatts of power per day, but are receiving less than half of that. With cold winters, demand has spiked -- leading to the shortages.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Thousands Of Women Will Wear Pink, Knitted ‘Pussy Power Hats’ To Protest Trump
[DAILYCALLER] Women all across America are planning to festoon themselves with knitted, pink "pussy power hats" during a march on Washington, D.C. -- and other cities -- scheduled for January 21, the day after Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s presidential inauguration.
President Trump, if he sees them, will absently note which are not flattered by that particular colour. He's detail-oriented like that.
The organizers of the Pussyhat Project hope to make "a powerful visual statement" at the Women’s March on Washington by having a large number of women show up wearing the hats.

The "pussy power hats," which feature perky cat-like ears,
...a design utterly suitable for girls up to the age of seven years...
are a cinch to make, organizers say. "Knitters, crocheters and sewers of all levels" can make the hats at home -- preferably with neon pink yarn.

The ribald name of the hats is an obvious reference to Trump’s notorious "grab them by the pussy" statements.

Southeast Asia
Eight Indonesians deported by Singapore released
[Straits Times] Eight Indonesians deported by Singapore early this week and questioned over suspected links to Daesh have been released. The men, aged between 16 and 37, were released on Thursday, police spokesman Saptono Erland said yesterday, after police concluded that they were not associated with Daesh.

On Tuesday, the group of eight was stopped by immigration officers who found a photo of a "shoe bomb" on the smartphone of its leader. Indonesian authorities identified him by the initials REH, and said he is a 37-year-old religious teacher.

"The group has returned to Padang, West Sumatra, after we cross-checked with the West Sumatra regional police, who confirmed that all eight men, including the teacher and his students, were from the Darul Hadith Islamic boarding school in Bukit Tinggi," Erland said.

He noted that Indonesia's counter-terrorism unit, Densus 88, as well as provincial intelligence officers also determined that the group had no links to Daesh.

The men, from Bukit Tinggi in West Sumatra, had spent seven days travelling in Thailand and Malaysia before heading to Singapore on Tuesday.

Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that the men were deported to Malaysia because one of them had "images of security concern", including that of a shoe bomb and another of Daesh fighters.

Riau Islands police chief Sam Budigusdian said the group left Padang on Jan 3 and flew to Kuala Lumpur to preach in Bukit Jalil. They later travelled to Malacca and Perlis, as well as Pattani in southern Thailand, before arriving at Woodlands Checkpoint from Johor at about 1am on Tuesday.

General Sam said Malaysian investigators also concluded that the eight men did not embrace ISIS ideology and that REH had downloaded the illicit images into his smartphone from a WhatsApp chat mes- saging group, which he has since left.

This was the third such case in the past one year involving Indonesians deported from Singapore over suspected links to Daesh.

Last month, a man and a woman were sent back to Batam after it was discovered that he was helping the woman travel to Syria to join the militant group. Last February, four Indonesians from an Islamic boarding school in West Java were stopped in Singapore and deported because they had planned to travel to Syria to fight for Daesh.

Trump offers to end some Russian sanctions for nuclear arms cut
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said he will offer to end sanctions against Russia in return for a nuclear arms reduction deal with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, The Times newspaper reported.
An interesting gambit...
In an interview with The Times of London, Trump said he wanted nuclear weapons arsenals of the world's two biggest nuclear powers -- the United States and Russia -- to be "reduced very substantially", Reuters reported.

“They have sanctions on Russia — let’s see if we can make some good deals with Russia. For one thing, I think nuclear weapons should be way down and reduced very substantially, that’s part of it,” Trump was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

Trump also criticized Russia for its intervention in the Syrian civil war, describing it as “a very bad thing” that had led to a “terrible humanitarian situation," The Times said.

Trump said that he would appoint Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, to broker a Middle East peace deal, urged Britain to veto any new UN Security Council resolution critical of Israel and repeated his criticism of President Obama’s handling of the Iran nuclear deal.

Science & Technology
Can the Russians shut down our copper-wired carriers with EW?
On the internet, nobody can tell you're a dog. Idiocy is painfully obvious, however.
[PaulCraigRoberts.org] Readers have asked me why 10 of 11 US aircraft carriers are lined up in a row in dock allegedly for maintanence.
Occam's razor would suggest it is because they are in need of maintenance, but let us proceed.
It reminds them of the battleships at Pearl Harbor. Readers ask if this could be an indication that the Deep State is planning a false flag attack on the carriers, as was carried out on the World Trade Center and Pentagon
...it is not promising that the blogger is a 9/11 truther...
in order to get the US at war with the independent Muslim world,
...that was the idea, true, but it was Osama bin Laden's idea, not ours.
this time in order to get the US at war with Russia before Trump can restore normal relations.
No need for deep state conspiracies when Barack Obama is in residence in the White House with his phone and pen, happy to create mischief foreign and domestic for his unwanted successor.
I don’t think so.
What you are doing does not reach the level of thinking. Thinking requires an IQ with two digits.
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was real, if provoked. The deception apparently was in the fact that Washington had warning but did not share it with the US Navy in Pearl Harbor. The Battleships were outmoded weapons, and the aircraft carriers had been removed.
I have no idea what this sentence means.
It would be extremely difficult to blame a false flag attack on US aircraft carriers on Russia. Indeed, if Russia wants to attack the US, the target would not be obsolete weapons such as aircraft carriers.

According to what I have been told by former(?) intelligence officers, the aircraft carriers are in dock so that their copper wiring can be replaced by fiber optics.
All at once? Nonsense.
Apparently, the Russians have the capability to shut down the operating systems of our ships and aircraft that are copper wired. In behalf of this conclusion, there were news reports that a missile ship Washington sent to impress the Russian naval base in Crimea had all its systems shut down by the overflight of one Russian jet. According to another news report, two Israeli US jet fighters were sent to express disobedience to Russia’s controlled airspace in Syria. The Russians asked the Israelis to leave, and when they did not, the Russians shut down the fire control and communication systems of their aircraft.
We watch the news here at Rantburg, and saw no such report. Israel has recently been shooting up that Syrian Air Force station outside Damascus where Hizb'allah takes delivery of Iranian weaponry, but absolutely nobody has managed to interfere.
According to what I have been told, the Russians discovered that copper wiring permits them to disrupt the operating systems with certain radar frequencies built into their air control systems.
Any of this true?
The gentleman writes well, with a good sense of grammar and spelling, so there's that.

#6  As a counterpoint, I seem to remember full flyby events of US Naval vessel Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea not too long ago.

A rabid conspiracist might consider the dual formation event a 'jammer' followed by a monitoring sensor platform. All that is really needed is to force a weapon system C&C component into an error reset condition which triggers a timeout and reboot protocol.

#7  "The deception apparently was in the fact that Washington had warning but did not share it with the US Navy in Pearl Harbor. " Gen. Martin & Admiral Bellinger did their jobs in March 1941 of predicting the details of the Pearl Harbor attack that followed on 7 Dec. 1941, but their report was studiously ignored by the higher command. The "deception" was merely self-deception on the part of the US higher command. The part played by Martin & Bellinger continues to be studiously ignored by historians.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel foiled 1,226 smuggling attempts at Gaza crossing last year
If the Palestinians reverse their recognition of Israel in accordance with the Oslo Accords, the border crossings into the West Bank as well as the Gaza Strip will be locked down tight.
[IsraelTimes] Defense Ministry notes record number of trucks bringing goods to the Strip, Paleostinians entering Israel through checkpoints.

In 2016, Israeli security personnel prevented 1,226 attempts to smuggle illicit goods like drones and scuba gear into the Gazoo Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing, a significant increase over the previous year, the Defense Ministry announced Sunday.

On average, nearly 500 trucks entered the Strip loaded with goods each day in 2016, a 13 percent increase from 2015, according to the ministry.

In order to prevent the production of weapons and the digging of so-called terror tunnels, Israel’s Coordinator for the Government’s Actions in the Territories (COGAT) maintains a strict list of what goods may not be on those trucks.

For instance, certain chemical compounds, gas tanks and drilling equipment are not allowed into Gazoo at all. But also some "dual purpose" materials, like electrical cables and cameras, which can be used for either benign or nefarious ends, are heavily regulated, if not outright forbidden, by Israel.

To circumvent those restrictions, smugglers attempt to bring illicit items into Gazoo hidden inside or among permitted goods.

Earlier this month, for instance, the Shin Bet security service busted an alleged smuggling ring that was bringing contraband into Gazoo hidden inside television sets and refrigerators.

Over the past year, members of the Defense Ministry’s Crossing Authority, working alongside agents from the Shin Bet security service, foiled 1,225 other attempts to smuggle model airplanes, commando knives, truck motors, diving gear and other forbidden materials into the beleaguered coastal enclave.

"The Defense Ministry’s bitter war against smugglers has demonstrably slowed the buildup of terrorist forces in Gazoo," Brig. Gen. (res.) Kamil Abu Rokon, head of the Crossing Authority, said in a statement.

It was a 66 percent increase over 2015, when some 740 smuggling attempts were prevented through the Kerem Shalom Crossing, the Defense Ministry said.

The crossing is the main avenue for bringing goods into Gazoo, along with Egypt’s Rafah Crossing, which is often closed, and illegal smuggling, either through tunnels or by sea.

The Erez Crossing is used predominantly for people to enter and exit Gazoo, though when necessary it too is used to transfer goods.

Abu Rokon credited the increase to new technology and scanning protocols at the crossing.

"In the past few months, we have been using a merchandise scanner at [the Kerem Shalom Crossing], which is one of the most advanced in the world, and we have added technologies and new checking procedures that aid us in our daily fight against smugglers," he said.

The Crossing Authority is responsible not only for Kerem Shalom and Erez, but also for many of the checkpoints into and out of the West Bank. On that front as well, the authority noted some record numbers for 2016.

The past year also saw a record number of Paleostinian pedestrians crossing into Israel through Defense Ministry checkpoints: 13 million. It was an increase of more than 1.5 million from the year before, and more than 4 million over 2014.

October 2016 was the Crossing Authority’s busiest month, with approximately 55,000 Paleostinians passing through its checkpoints each day, the Defense Ministry said.

Israeli politicians, on both sides of the aisle, have called for renovations and improvements for West Bank checkpoints, which are often overcrowded and slow.

EXCELLENT! Trump's Pick To Head The VA Has Track Record For TURNING HOSPITALS AROUND
Trump’s surprise VA pick known as turnaround artist

President-elect Donald Trump surprised many when he chose one of President Obama’s appointees to run the Department of Veterans Affairs after pledging to overhaul the department during the campaign.

But the nominee, current under secretary of health David Shulkin, has a long history in the private sector turning around struggling hospitals. Veterans groups called the choice a pleasant surprise, as they say Shulkin has overseen a turnaround in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and resisted calls for privatizing the federal system.

"While our membership has been clear in its preference to have a veteran leading the VA, I am heartened by the fact that Dr. Shulkin seems to legitimately ’get it,’ " AMVETS Executive Director Joe Chenelly said in a statement this week. "Even as the undersecretary for VHA, Dr. Shulkin has continued to personally see patients in an admirable effort to stay in touch with veterans and caregivers."

#1  all his picks are amazing

the reason is - he is an expert at hiring the best person to fit the job

that is what he has done successfully for 40 years. That's why he's president now.

That's why I KNOW he is going to be the best president since Reagan, even better - if only the intel community and bureaucrats can just get out of the way or at least remember their place as public servants. Servants.

#3  "While our membership has been clear in its preference to have a veteran leading the VA, I am heartened by the fact that Dr. Shulkin seems to legitimately ’get it’ "

The objective is not to fill a slot with a demographic preference; the objective is to find the most capable available to perform the mission.

Something Mr. Chenelly should have known.

Inauguration 2017: Entertainers won't perform; activists gonna tear it up
[VictoryGirlsBlog] Entertainers’ refusal to perform at the Inauguration is their right. It’s also a big FU to America. If that action weren’t enough, multiple social justice warriors are planning to actually disrupt the event. Both groups are doing their part to undermine the American tradition of peaceful transfer of power. Two sides of the same coin.

Some entertainers, and others, have refused outright to perform at the Inauguration. Some have accepted, then backed out after they were criticized by those on the Left. The stated reasons boil down to wanting to retain their "integrity" by separating themselves from performing for Donald Trump. Trump is so terrible they cannot be associated with him. (The true reason is that they have been bullied into compliance).

Some of these virtuous performers are a Rockette(s), Elton John, Gene Simmons, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, Garth Brooks, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Aretha Franklin, David Foster, Ice T, Charlotte Church, and the latest, Jennifer Holliday.

Syrian Army raises flag over Al-Husseniyah in Wadi Barada
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) raised the flag over al-Husseniyah on Sunday after a reconciliation deal was put in place by the town's elders.

According to an al-Masdar field correspondent, the town elders of al-Husseniyah negotiated a deal with the Syrian Arab Army after the jihadist rebels refused to end the violence plaguing the Wadi Barada area.

In accordance with the ceasefire deal, the Syrian Arab Army was allowed to raise the flag over al-Husseniyah and build checkpoints around the town.

The Syrian Arab Army now controls most of al-Husseniyah; however, some parts of the town still has a jihadist presence due to their refusal to leave the area.
