Pick a Strategy
... The last two administrations have not brought victory over Islamic extremism any closer. To avoid defeat from attrition Trump will need a new approach. While none has been officially announced the outlines of a new strategy may be emerging from the actions it has so far taken. Trump may be:
1. Attempting to shrink the radical petrodollar support through increased domestic energy production, something Secretary of State Rex Tillerson would understand;
2. close the West to Wahabism and its emigres via the immigration policy that is proving so controversial;
3. trying to diplomatically neutralize Turkey and Iran and play off India against Pakistan.

Such a concept would attack the money and ideology provided by the Saudis, lessen the influence of the Islamic brain trust (the Persians and Turks) and bottle up a potential sources of nuclear weapons (Pakistan). It would also prevent the buildup of a rear area inside the West itself by border control. It's a WW2 or Cold War Era "center of gravity" approach to a problem so far dominated by the "root causes" method.

It has the advantage of clarity. Afghanistan, Sudan, Kenya -- even Malmo -- are no longer important if the wellsprings of conspiracy that feed and fund it are stopped up. A center of gravity strategy offers at least theoretically, the prospect of victory, something which "root causes" never proffered.

...The conflict between the old Obama approach and the emerging Trumpian of strategic simplicity is nowhere more marked than in immigration and refugee policy. To liberals open borders are simply "givens" -- the consequence of their world view. To Deplorables open borders represent an instinctive threat which they have not been able to explain within a comprehensive framework in the same way progressives have.

But that may soon change. While the Trump administration may not be able to carry out a new successor strategy to replace that of GWB and BHO, it seems well along at raising the essential questions whose answers must form its basis: what is the center of gravity of radical Islamism? Can you fight radical Islam without blowing up the East-West alliance? Is it possible to fight radical Islam without starting a fight to finish with the Left in the West? Trump may not have the answers, but to the discomfiture of all, he will pose all the questions.

#1  This is the third different administration in a row with a different strategy.

1) GWB was a proponent of "root causes" strateby which dovetailed with his noblesse oblige, globalist mindset.

2) the old Obama approach which had the hidden of agenda of victorious Islam no matter how radical. See MoBros in Egypt.

If Trump can pull this off and defang the snake while having it bite itself that would be a triumph of the first degree. Getting the questions asked in society in a serious way would be a damn good start.

"Open Borders" = national suicide. Further explanation of this is unneeded unless & until a commitment to national sovereignty happens.

Klingons say 'no can do' to security clearance of Mike Flynn deputy
BLUF [Palmer Report] The Central Intelligence Agency has now denied elite security clearance for Michael Flynn’s top National Security Council deputy Robin Townley, meaning that Townley is immediately out of a job, as the clearance was required for the job. Incoming CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who was recently appointed by Donald Trump and is presumably still fully loyal to him, signed off on the denial of clearance. Assuming that Pompeo is acting on Trump’s orders, it means that Trump is now immediately freezing Michael Flynn and his staff out of power.
Not sure I agree with the Palmer 'Russian' or 'freezing Flynn out' analysis.

Europe
Hungary comes down very hard on Muslim invaders
[DailyMail] At first glance, the video looks like a Hollywood thriller. Set to strident, aggressive music, it shows a group of muscular men using motorbikes, helicopters and even horses to race across the countryside in pursuit of human quarry.

When the targets are captured, they are wrestled to the ground and their hands bound as the patrol members, in camouflage clothing, stand menacingly over them.

But the ’narrator’ whose voice can be heard over these chilling scenes is not a highly-paid movie star. He is, in fact, a provincial politician, and his message is unequivocal: ’Hungary is a bad choice for migrants.’

The Reason The Elite Hate DJT: He Is Opposed To The One World Agenda Of The Globalists
[Zero Hedge] Have you ever wondered why the elite hate Donald Trump so much? There have certainly been many politicians throughout the years that have been disliked, but with Trump there is a hatred that is so intense that it almost seems tangible at times. During the campaign, they went to extraordinary lengths to destroy him, but it didn’t work. And now that he is president, the attacks against him have been absolutely relentless. So why is there so much animosity toward Trump? Is it just because he is not a member of their club?

The truth, of course, is that it runs much deeper than that. Ultimately, the elite hate Trump because he is opposed to their demonic one world agenda. Many among the elite are referred to as "globalists" because their eventual goal is to unite the whole world under a single planetary system. These globalists truly believe that they know better than all the rest of us, and they want to impose their way of doing things on every man, woman and child on the entire planet.

Five Dakota Access pipeline activists indicted on federal charges in torching of bridge
[Wash Times] Five Dakota Access pipeline activists have been indicted on federal charges, accused of setting fire to a bridge in order to stop authorities from reaching a protest camp illegally built on private property.

The indictment unsealed Wednesday stems from one of the protest’s most chaotic confrontations, an all-day Oct. 27 melee that saw agitators set blazes, hurl rocks and Molotov cocktails at police, and try to start a buffalo stampede with riders on horseback.

About 700 protest-related arrests have been made since August, mostly for trespassing and rioting involving activists who posted bail and were promptly released, but the indictment reveals that at least a handful of activists remain in jail pending trial on federal crimes.

The five men, identified by authorities using aerial photography at the scene, are charged with torching blockades on the Backwater Bridge erected by protesters using "stacked logs, fallen trees, tires and other miscellaneous items," according to an affidavit.

"As law enforcement approached the bridge, individuals at the bridge were notified that law enforcement was approaching," said the affidavit by Derek J. Hill, a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Canadian School Staff Goes On Strike, Board Replaces Them All In One Day
[Daily Caller] A Canadian school was fully prepared with replacement staff up and working on the first day of a 250-worker strike.

The school district first notified parents of a potential strike Feb. 2, noting that it was open to negotiating with the union. In its latest press release, Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) told the community its schools remain operational.

"We do not want a labor dispute. We wish to continue the negotiations and conclude an agreement for the benefit of staff members, students and parents," said Francois Turpin, CSDCEO secretary and education director.

Raymond Giroux, president of CUPE Local 4155, the union representing the strike, said the school was trying to avoid the issues. "We see now why they refused to meet with us on Monday, the day before the strike began," Giroux said. "They were more interested in hiring contractors to do our jobs, and in renting a bus to deliver their managers past the picket line."

Economy
The Problem of Minimum Wage
...As I’ve said before, economics is a science. Trying to legislate it makes as much sense as legislating the law of gravity or the rate of rain fall. It might make you feel good, but it doesn’t work that way.

The way it works is by seeking other channels, which include being paid "under the table", forcing other employees to work unpaid hours (trust me, it can be done, particularly in a bad economy) and firing the dead weight, and ... hiring illegal labor.

The US doesn’t have an illegal immigration problem. The US has a minimum wage problem.

#1  Just as employers who knowingly hire illegals to work should be hammered by the law, so should employers who force employees to work off the books for unpaid hours. A man's labor is his one source to barter and sell for his livelihood and existence. To steal that time is all but slavery.

Just as we expect judges to stay to the written law in their actions, employers need to be held to the written law whether they like it or not.

Relax, That Scary Fukushima Headline Was Fake News
h/t Instapundit
On February 8, Adam Housley of Fox News reported a story with a terrifying headline: "Radiation at Japan's Fukushima Reactor Is Now at 'Unimaginable' Levels." Let's just pick up the most exciting paragraphs:

The radiation levels at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant are now at "unimaginable" levels.
[Housley] said the radiation levels -- as high as 530 sieverts per hour -- are now the highest they've been since 2011 when a tsunami hit the coastal reactor.

"To put this in very simple terms. Four sieverts can kill a handful of people," he explained.

The degree to which this story is misleading is amazing, but to explain it, we need a little bit of a tutorial.

'We're going to see more': Sanctuary cities cave in face of Trump's funding threats
[FOX] Several towns, cities and counties around the nation are caving to President Trump's threat to pull funding, and abandoning their "sanctuary" pledges to shield illegal immigrants from federal authorities.

Dayton, Ohio, dropped a policy that restricted the city’s cooperation with immigration officials pursuing illegal immigrants arrested for misdemeanors or felony property crimes, according to the Dayton Daily News. Police Chief Richard Biehl said federal authorities will no longer be impeded by the city when pursuing illegal immigrants being held by his department.

Other communities that have dropped policies of shielding illegal immigrant suspects from Immigration and Customs Enforcement include Miami-Dade and Dayton, are Saratoga, N.Y., Finney County, Kan., and Bedford, Penn., according to The Center for Immigration Studies, which keeps a list of sanctuary communities.

"We are reviewing policy changes at a multitude of other jurisdictions as well," said Marguerite Telford, CIS’s director of communications, who said the organization is "being inundated" by officials on its sanctuary map who want to be taken off.

The mayor of Miami-Dade County, which was considered a sanctuary community, made headlines recently when he changed a policy that called for refusing to hold arrested immigrants for immigration officials unless they committed to reimbursing the county for the cost of detention.

Spicer's briefings on cable now beat ratings for ABC, CBS soaps
[The Hill] White House press secretary Sean Spicer's briefings have proved to be ratings gold for the cable news networks, even beating soap operas like "The Bold and the Beautiful" and "General Hospital" on broadcast networks CBS and ABC.

Spicer’s briefings, carried live by Fox News, CNN and MSNBC, are delivering an average of 4.3 million viewers, according to Nielsen data. Statistics show that across Fox, CNN and MSNBC, audiences jump by an average of 10 percentage points when Spicer appears on screen for the briefings.

What some outlets like The New York Times have called "the soap opera at the White House" is actually beating the fictional long-running soaps, which usually air in the same hour of the early afternoon.

Russia considering giving Snowden to US as ‘gift' to Trump
[The Hill] Russia is considering handing over former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden as "a gift" to President Trump, according to a new report.

Russia sending Snowden back to the U.S. is one of several options Moscow is considering to "curry favor" with Trump, NBC News reported Friday, citing a senior U.S. official who had analyzed intelligence reports on Russia.

NBC noted a second intelligence community source affirmed the intelligence, adding it had been gathered since Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration.

Ben Wizner, who is Snowden’s American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) lawyer, said Friday he is unaware of plans to return his client home.

"Team Snowden has received no such signals and has no new reason for concern," he said.

Snowden is facing espionage charges for leaking classified information in the U.S.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
DeVos Physically Blocked by Protesters From Entering DC School
[Free Beacon] Newly confirmed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was physically blocked from entering a school in Washington, D.C. on Friday by protesters.

Anti-DeVos demonstrators climbed the stairs of the back of the Jefferson Middle School Academy building in southwest D.C. and began to scream and hover around the secretary. DeVos' security team quickly moved in and escorted her back to her car.

Protesters can be heard in the video screaming that DeVos gave money to senators so that she could buy her position to head the Department of Education.

DeVos remained unfazed by the protesters while two other reporters tried to get a comment from her.

One protester screamed "Shame! Shame! Shame!" as her security detail tried to leave.

A man could be seen holding a "Black Lives Matter" sign as he stood in front of Devos' black Chevy Suburban, trying to block the vehicle from leaving.

DeVos released a statement Friday afternoon saying that she would "not be deterred" after the incident with protesters. She thanked Jefferson Middle School Academy for hosting her at the event, the education secretary's first visit to a public K-12 school since being sworn in.

"Focusing on their students and families is at the heart of Jefferson Academy's approach and that's exactly what I believe is at the heart of providing an exceptional education," DeVos said in her statement. "I was honored to speak with Jefferson's team about our shared commitment to strengthening public education."

And the D.C. Police, school officials and school security were where ?

Terror Networks
New York Times Lobbies for Muslim Brotherhood
TEL AVIV ‐ The New York Times in recent days has run numerous articles and opinion pieces advocating against designating the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization amid reports the Trump administration is debating doing just that.

The Muslim Brotherhood openly seeks to establish a worldwide Islamic caliphate based on Sharia law. While many Brotherhood wings reject the use of violence as a strategic tactic, preferring instead a sophisticated gradualist strategy to achieve their aims, the Brotherhood has spawned terrorist organizations ‐ most notably Hamas ‐ that adhere to its philosophy of a world order based on Islam. The Brotherhood was also a central player in the so-called Arab Spring, revolutions punctuated by violence across the Arab world.

Designating the Brotherhood a terrorist organization would add the U.S. to the growing list of nations to do so, including Muslim countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The Times’ propagation of the Brotherhood culminated in an editorial board piece published Thursday titled, "All of Islam Isn’t the Enemy."

Kellogg's CEO: Massive Layoffs at Time of Massive Boycott Total Coincidence
[Breitbart] Kellogg’s CEO John Bryant says the company’s plummeting stock and reported $53 million loss in the fourth quarter are unrelated to the company’s politically driven decision last year to pull ads from Breitbart News, which spurred a boycott campaign and intense online backlash.

According to the Associated Press, Bryant says that "the company did not see any effect it could attribute to the boycott."

Last November, Kellogg’s pulled its ads from Breitbart News, caving to the demands of left-wing pressure groups.

Ukraine's Rebel Region Bids Farewell to Slain Warlord
[An Nahar] Thousands of Ukrainians stood in line with flowers on Friday in the separatist fiefdom of Donetsk to bid farewell to a field commander who was slain in a rocket attack on his office.

Kiev and the forces of Evil have traded blame for the death of Mikhail Tolstykh with Sherlocks saying a portable rocket launcher was fired at his office in a suburb of Donetsk on Wednesday morning.

The 36-year-old whose nom de guerre was "Givi" was head of the powerful "Somali" battalion and a leading commander of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic in the east of Ukraine.

Tolstykh's body was laid out in the city's opera theatre with the battalion's flag covering his closed coffin.

AFP news hounds saw about 2,000 people -- most of them pensioners and rebel fighters -- line up with flowers and orange-and-black ribbons expressing their support for Russia to get inside the theatre and say their final goodbyes.

Another well-known Donetsk military chief called Arseny Pavlov was killed in a kaboom in October last year.

Several rebel commanders considered to be a threat to the separatist authorities -- or those who have become too powerful -- have been killed in boom-mobileings and ambushes far from the scene of the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Tolstykh took part in major battles with Ukrainian government forces in a conflict that has been going on for 33 months despite Western efforts to forge a truce.

He was born in eastern Ukraine and served in the army as a tank commander before working in various manual jobs and then joining the rebel cause when the war broke out in April 2014.

He and Pavlov -- better known as "Motorola" -- had been the most recognised faces among the rebels during the worst of the fighting.

Turkish forces target 150 ISIS positions near al-Bab
[al-Manar] Turkish airstrikes and shelling targeting over 150 ISIL positions and strongholds in Syria’s al-Bab have killed a total of 23 ISIL militants, local media reported Friday, citing a Turkish military statement.

According to the Daily Sabah newspaper, the Turkish army destroyed 154 ISIL targets, including shelters, defense positions, command centers, weapons, and vehicles, in the town of al-Bab.

Additional airstrikes conducted by the Turkish forces also hit 11 ISIL targets, including seven buildings, three headquarters, and one arsenal, the newspaper added.

The Turkish military operation in Syria’s al-Bab has entered the final stage. Turkey’s units entered central Al-Bab, the operation is being conducted in coordination with Russia.

Asharq Al Awsat sez the battle ain't going so well:
Ankara, Beirut- The Turkish Army faced a bloody day Thursday in the countryside of Aleppo, in northern Syria, after a Russian warplane accidentally attacked Turkish soldiers while hitting ISIS positions around al-Bab city, killing three of them and injuring 11 others.

The Turkish Armed Forces witnessed other losses in its ranks after five soldiers were killed and 10 were injured in attacks launched by ISIS.

The Turkish soldiers are fighting in the area where Operation Euphrates Shield is active. Euphrates Shield, which involves Free Syrian Army fighters backed by Turkish forces, was launched last August to secure Turkey’s border with Syria against terrorists.

The Turkish Armed Forces said in a statement Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin called his Turkish counterpart President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and expressed condolences over the “tragic” incident.

“Both leaders affirmed their readiness to continue active efforts to advance the Astana [Kazakhstan peace talks] and Geneva processes on resolving the Syrian conflict,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

The accidental attack comes as Ankara is working with Moscow to prevent any confrontation between their forces in the battles raging around al-Bab, the stronghold of ISIS northeast of Aleppo.

Turkey backs the FSA while Russia supports the Syrian regime forces operating in the area.

At the political level, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) will hold a three-day meeting in Riyadh on Friday to form a delegation that would participate in the Geneva talks next Feb. 20.

Sources assume the meeting would witness sharp discussions between political figures and military factions, in light of their current dispute on the number of representatives that should attend the Geneva talks and whether the opposition delegation should be political or military.

Commenting on the issue, Syrian Coalition Member Ahmad Ramadan told Asharq Al-Awsat: “There is a tendency to include one or two representatives from Cairo and Moscow in the opposition delegation that we hope it would be based on the tripartite principle.”

Ramadan said this principle stipulates that one third of the delegation be represented by the Coalition, the second part by members and factions of the Astana meeting, and the last part by the HNC.

Meanwhile, a political leader of the Fastaqim Kama Umirt rebel faction, Zakaria Malahifji, said opposition factions insist to name nine of their figures in the delegation attending the Geneva talks.

Britain
UK ending child refugee program proposed by Kindertransport passenger
[IsraelTimes] Britannia is ending a program to take in child refugees proposed by a politician who arrived in the country by Kindertransport during World War II.

Proponents of the program had wanted the United Kingdom to take in as many as 3,000 lone child refugees, but the government said Wednesday that the initiative would end in March after the resettling of 350 children, according to The Guardian.
Given that a significant, but hidden, proportion of those "children" were most definitely adults -- and in some cases clearly middle-aged -- ending the program is the right call.
Alf Dubs, who was born in Czechoslovakia and arrived in London as a child by way of the Kindertransport rescue effort, proposed the program in the House of Lords last year. Dubs, who previously served in the House of Commons for the Labour Party, called on Prime Minister Theresa May not to end the program, The Guardian reported.

Immigration Minister Robert Goodwill said local authorities had stated that they could only resettle 400 unaccompanied child refugees until the end of March and the government had never committed to taking in a specific number of children.

Britain approves £2 mln programme to help Egypt fight human trafficking
[AlAhram] British Ambassador to Cairo John Casson announced on Thursday the signing of a £2 million British programme to assist Egypt in combating human trafficking, saying that while there are no magical solutions to the problem, the UK strongly supports Cairo’s efforts in this area.

"Human trafficking costs the world €6 billion annually" Casson said, praising a recent law approved by the Egyptian government which incriminates all parties involved in human trafficking operations.

Casson said the law, signed by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in November 2016 amid a hike in the number of migrants colonists departing the country for Europe, underscores Egypt’s political will to curb this phenomenon.

The British ambassador also praised Egypt's role in aiding immigrants colonists and refugees and its assistance to neighboring Libya, which is considered the main point of departure for refugees and irregular migrants colonists traveling to Europe.

The head of Egypt's National Coordinating Committee for Combating and Preventing Illegal Immigration (NCCPIM) Ambassador Naela Gabr welcomed the announcement of the programme, which is under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration.

Iran’s Kurds ask Trump administration to list Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist group
[ARA] Iranian Kurdish parties are urging US president Trump’s administration to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization, during the 38 anniversary of the establishment of the Islamic republic. On Friday, Kurds organised a Twitter storm to demand the listing of the IRGC as terrorists.

The Trump administration is considering listing the Moslem Brüderbund and the IRGC as terrorist organizations.

"After Khomeini created the IRGC, these forces immediately started to kill our people," Aso Saleh, a representative of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDK-I) in Sweden, told ARA News. "All Kurds believe that the IRGC forces are acting in violation of basic human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
by killing civilian people and supporting other terrorist organizations in whole the world," he said.

"They participate directly or indirectly in hundreds of terrorist attacks not only against the regime’s opposition leaders (like Dr.Qasemlou or Dr. Sharafkandi) but also against other countries. We think that is a correct decision and we support it. Stopping all kinds of terrorism, from ISIS to IRGC is a responsibility to all of us in this era," he concluded.

Hiwa Bahrami, a spokesperson PDK-I front man in Germany, told ARA News: "We are launching a Twitter campaign with the goal to push the US to recognize the IRGC as a terrorist organization. The IRGC has been oppressing Kurds in Iran for years. If they are classified as a terrorist organization, they will be very limited in their activities in the region."

"This concerns not only the military or political ambitions of the IRGC but also the economic interests. In addition, the Kurdish Peshmerga in Iran are fighting against IRGC, in that case this fight will be called a fight against terror on an international level!" Bahrami added.

Haqqani, Taliban leaders enjoy freedom of actions in Pakistan: US commander
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The top US commander in Afghanistan General John Nicholson has said the Taliban and Haqqani network leaders are enjoying freedom of action within Pakistain safe havens.

Gen. Nicholson is the commander of the US forces and the NATO

-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.

"The Taliban and Haqqani network are the greatest threats to security in Afghanistan. Their big shots remain insulated from pressure and enjoy freedom of action within Pakistain safe havens," he told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

He said "As long as they enjoy external enablement, they have no incentive to reconcile. The primary factor that will enable our success is the elimination of external sanctuary and support to the Death Eaters."

Gen. Nicholson also added that Russia has become more assertive over the past year, overtly lending legitimacy to the Taliban to undermine NATO efforts and bolster belligerents using the false narrative that only the Taliban are fighting ISIS-K.

"Similarly, neighboring Iran is providing support to the Taliban while also engaging the Afghan government over issues of water rights, trade, and security," he added.

Former ISIS militant reveals details on filming of Jordanian pilot’s execution
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A former ISIS hard boy has revealed details of how the hard boy group filmed the execution of a Jordanian pilot in 2015.

In a documentary that was aired on Al Arabiya, the former hard boy who kept his identity hidden, said that after the pilot was caught, the hard boy group decided to use him to send a message to the world.

"We filmed him on the site of where he was going to be executed and zoomed in on his face, but at that time he didn’t know we were planning to set him a light," the hard boy said, adding that the pilot only realized he was going to be burnt when they pour gasoline on his body.

"We also filmed the fighters, who were standing on guard," he said.

The hard boy said that there was four cameras given to other fighters to capture the footage.

Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kaseasbeh was captured by ISIS while he was on a mission in Raqqa when jet jet was shot down.

His death was confirmed by Jordan after a video published online by ISIS claimed to show him being burned alive. The video showed a man standing in a cage engulfed in flames. The video posted on Tuesday was distributed via a Twitter account known as a source for IS propaganda.

The highly produced 22-minute film includes a sequence showing the Jordanian pilot walking at gunpoint amongst rubble apparently caused by coalition air strikes that targeted hard boys.

Countering Qaeda in Yemen Sparks Controversy in Washington

Coordination with Yemeni forces is to reduce risks of losing civilian lives.

A statement by the Yemeni embassy in Washington said the government "stresses that it has not suspended any programs with regards to counterterrorism operations in Yemen with the United States Government".

The Yemeni government "reiterates its firm position that any counterterrorism operations carried out in Yemen should continue to be in consultation with Yemeni authorities and have precautionary measures to prevent civilian casualties."

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The spokesperson for the Arab coalition, General Ahmed Assiri, said that the ousted Yemeni President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
will be subject to trial on charges of involvement in the Houthi-led coup in Sanaa.

Assiri assured, in an exclusive interview with the Russian news agency Sputnik and Novosti on Thursday, that Saleh is a Yemeni citizen, "who committed criminal acts in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and he is now subject to international sanctions." He added that the government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi is responsible for its citizens and, therefore, will hold Saleh accountable for his actions and put him under "trial in accordance with the laws of Yemen."

Furthermore, Assiri asserted that Saleh "belongs to the category of criminals who carried out a coup against the authority" in the state, and pointed out that Saleh ought to cooperate with the legitimate government if he wants to avoid the punishment he deserves according to the law.

Assiri stated that the Arab coalition considers "all the groups that supported the coup as one bloc and led Yemen to the tragedy" that the country is undergoing.

Assiri announced that under the leadership of President Hadi, the Yemeni government now controls more than 85 percent of the Yemeni territories, and stressed that "the Houthis only have influence in Sanaa and some areas of Saada."

The spokesperson refused to comment on the rumor that Riyadh has been targeted by a ballistic missile launched from Sanaa, saying: "I do not comment on these kind of lies. Whatever is happening in the Saudi Kingdom or in the areas of operations will be announced through an official statement of the alliance. And since we didn’t publish an official statement about the practices of the Houthis, it means that this is a lie, and we do not have time to argue."

He affirmed: "We are in the realm of facts. We are accustomed to credibility with the Saudi community and with the Arab and international countries. We have nothing to hide. The Saudi Kingdom reported on the 38 ballistic missiles launched by the Houthis. Most of these rockets failed to do any damage and they are only threatening the lives of Yemeni citizens since they didn’t reach the Saudi territory. If anyone can confirm that Riyadh has been hit by a missile, he can go ahead and present a statement."

Government claims full control of al-Mokha in Yemen
ADEN: Yemeni government forces took full control of the Red Sea coastal town of Al-Mokha on Friday after weeks of deadly fighting with Shiite rebels and their allies, a spokesman said.

Before the 19th century, Al-Mokha was Yemen’s main port and export hub for coffee grown in the highlands and its historical symbolism meant it was fiercely fought over.

“We have done with the Battle of Al-Mokha,” armed forces spokesman Mohammed Al-Naqib told AFP, adding that the rebels had been forced to flee the town. Another loyalist military source confirmed that government forces were in “full control.”

Tens of thousands of civilians were trapped in the fighting. Many of them had sought refuge in Al-Mokha after fleeing their homes in towns to the south as government forces pushed up the coast.

The UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, said late last month that “scores of civilians” had been killed or wounded by shelling and sniper fire around Al-Mokha or by air strikes carried out in support of government forces by a Saudi-led coalition. He said most services in the town had ground to a halt, including the mains water supply.

“We are now preparing for the second phase of the battle for the coast, which is to advance toward Al-Hodeida,” the loyalist armed forces spokesman said.

80 rebel troops surrender in Homs
At least 82 militants surrendered and laid down arms to the Syrian army in the central Homs province on Friday, Fars news agency reported.

The militants, who operated in and near the town of al-Holeh, surrendered at the Samalil passage.

The government officials are said to have granted pardon to the militants after seizing their arms.

The Syrian government tries to de-escalate the conflict that has been lasting for about six years by granting amnesty to militants who express their readiness to lay down arms and return to normal life.

Earlier this month, at least 100 militants agreed to lay down arms in the region of Wadi Barada in the Damascus province.

Former US National Guard soldier jailed for IS support
[BBC] A former US National Guard soldier who was convicted of plotting to aid the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....

Mohammed Jalloh,
...Sierra Leone-born Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, according to Heavy.com, was full of bright ideas about the grand jihadi massacre he would commit for the glorification of Allah. Apparently Allah doesn't want that kind of glorification, especially not from the likes of him...
27, a naturalised US citizen, pleaded guilty in October 2016 to providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Jalloh told Sherlocks he had also tried to travel to Libya and considered a shooting attack against US soldiers.

In September 2016, another soldier was sentenced for supporting the group.

Former National Guard specialist Hasan Edmonds was given 30 years in prison for planning an attack against soldiers at the Joliet Armory in Illinois.

Jalloh, of Sterling, Virginia, quit the National Guard after hearing lectures from radical holy man Anwar al-Awlaki
... Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, zapped in Yemen, al-Awlaki was a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen. He was an Islamic holy man who was a trainer for al-Qaeda and its franchises. His sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers, by Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hussein, and Undieboomer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He was the first U.S. citizen ever placed on a CIA target list...
, according to a statement from the US Department of Justice.

During a six-month trip to Africa in 2015, Jalloh met with IS members in Nigeria.

He is one of 100 people in the US to be charged with terror offences related to IS since 2014, according to the George Washington University Extremism Tracker.

Chelsea Clinton says she won’t run for Senate
[NYPOST] What do you do when President Trump’s adviser Kellyanne Conway tweets that your mom is a loser?

Princess Chelsea Clinton, who attended her friend Tanya Taylor’s fashion presentation Friday, shared some helpful advice on how to deal with social media bullies: Focus on making your voice heard and ignore the taunts and low blows. "Just have it be background noise," she told The Post.
"And if that doesn't work or if your feelings are hurt, encourage your filthy rich friends to fund riots and looting," she added quietly...
Clinton also had an emphatic, one-word response to rumors that she’ll run for New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s seat: "No!"
Darn! As bad a Senator as Gillibrand is, she'd mop the floor with Chelsea.

#1  That is a relief. The choice New York has is between Kennedy and this Clinton.

The problem is all of the New Yorker and New Jersey refugees that cannot afford their idiot lazy voting habits now live in my State.

I see why they fled, but I cannot understand why they are turning my state into blue state New York.

I call this bullshit DAMN YANKEES.

Like a bunch of locusts, eating everything and leaving, then imposing their idiocy here and thinking I agree with them.

I don't.

We should put all of you blue state voters on a train from whence you came and force you to live with your own idiot save the world decisions.

But I Digress.

I in no way hate Chelsea Clinton. I just think she belongs on the View and OUR Nation deserves studied Leaders again.

And that means nothing from the shallow gene pool of this fake family or anything willing to subject US to the left.

Fix your shit New York. None of the above is your only option.

#7  She did not rule out a run for the House
Former first daughter and failed hedge-fund wife Chelsea Clinton has no interest in being a U.S Senator, the New York Post reports.

“No!” Chelsea told the Post when asked about rumors, first reported in the New York Daily News, that Chelsea could be in line to replace Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand should the New York Democrat run for president in 2020.

Chelsea, however, said nothing to dispel other rumors that she is being groomed to run for a New York congressional seat. Her newly saucy behavior on social media has increased speculation that Hillary’s daughter is planning a career in politics. In a 2015 interview with Sky News, Chelsea said she would “absolutely” consider running for office.

Chelsea could also use a job and a steady salary. Her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, recently shut down his failed hedge fund, and the Clinton Foundation, where Chelsea is currently employed, is having trouble raising money from foreign governments and sketchy corporations since her mom lost the presidential election.

It’s hard out there for a Clinton.

Father of child maid 'forgives' judge for alleged torture, again
[DAWN] The father of a child maid allegedly tortured by an additional district and sessions judge (ADSJ) in Islamabad said he 'forgave' the suspect and his wife a second time during a hearing of the case on Friday.

ADSJ Raja Khurram Ali Khan, and his wife were facing an inquiry for their alleged involvement in keeping juvenile housemaid Taiba in wrongful confinement, burning her hand over a missing broom, beating her with a ladle, detaining her in a storeroom and threatening her with dire consequences.

During a hearing of the case before an additional district and sessions court today, Mohammad Azam, Taiba's father, said he forgave Khurram and his wife, adding that the case was "baseless".

Azam maintained that Khurram and his wife are not the criminals in the case and that a petition has been filed against the real criminals with police.

In an affidavit submitted in court, Taiba's father stated that he would have "no objections" if the court decides to grant bail to the judge and his wife.

Appearing before the court earlier in January, Azam had forgiven the judge and his wife and claimed that he had investigated the matter on his own and found the case to be a false one.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
when he appeared before the Supreme Court later, Taiba's father had retracted his statement and said he had forgiven the suspects after being pressured.

"You had backtracked from your earlier statement as well," ADSJ Raja Asif who was hearing the case today told Azam, and assured him that there was no need to be scared.

"Are you giving this statement of your own accord? Is there any pressure on you?" the judge asked, adding, "The court will protect you."

Mohammad Azam, however, repeated his stance, saying "I forgive Raja Khurram and his wife."

Judge Raja Asif granted bail to Raja Khurram and his wife against surety bonds of Rs30,000 each.

FBI Agent Drove Away As Jihadists Open Fire in Garland, Texas
An undercover FBI agent who was investigating terrorism was driving past two Arizona men just before they opened fire outside a prophet Muhammad cartoon contest in suburban Dallas in 2015, court records show, raising questions about whether authorities could have done more to stop the attack.

The records became available to The Associated Press in the criminal case against Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem, a Phoenix man who was sentenced this week to 30 years in prison on criminal convictions that included providing support to Islamic State.

Kareem wasn't at the event in Garland, but authorities say he provided guns used by Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi in the attack, instructed them on how to use weapons and watched violent jihadist videos with them.

SDF hands over villages to regime in Aleppo province
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] The US-backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Aleppo province have handed over several villages to the Syrian regime due to a Russian-brokered deal reached Thursday, activists and regime media said.

Pro-government media outlets said the deal will allow people of the villages Tal-Jabin, Hardantin, Marasta al-Khan, Mayer, Menig and Tal-Refat returning home.

Regime public institutions and directorates to be opened and all life aspects to be as before, according to the statement cited by a Russian officer.

SDF controlled villages of Meing, Tal Rifat and others in February 2016, while the Syria regime controlled villages of Hardantin, Marasta al-Khan, Mayer when the oppositions forces withdrew from them following severe festivities with regime forces and allied militias.

Immigration enforcement raids in at least 6 states
U.S. immigration authorities arrested hundreds of undocumented immigrants in at least a half-dozen states this week in a series of raids that marked the first large-scale enforcement of President Donald Trump's Jan. 26 order to crack down on the estimated 11 million immigrants living here illegally.

The raids, which officials said targeted known criminals, also netted some immigrants who did not have criminal records, an apparent departure from similar enforcement waves during former President Barack Obama's administration that aimed to just corral and deport those who had committed crimes.

Trump has pledged to deport up to 3 million undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Last month he also made a change to the Obama administration's policy of prioritizing deportation for convicted criminals, substantially broadening the scope of who the Department of Homeland Security can target, to include those with only minor offenses or those with no convictions at all.

Libyan army bird crashes in Benghazi
Two Libyan National Army (LNA) pilots were reported to have been killed when their helicopter crashed today in an operation against the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB) south of Sirte. The BDB claimed it had attacked the helicopter and is reported saying the two are dead. A third member of the crew is missing. In what is reported as the last contact the helicopter had with ground control, the pilot is alleged to have said “we are under heavy fire”. Contact was said to have then been lost.

There were claims this evening, however, that one of the pilots, named as Mumin Al-Drissi, has been found alive. This has not been confirmed.

For his part, LNA air force chief Major-General Saqr Geroushi has denied the helicopter was shot down.

It was involved in a series of airstrikes against a BDB convoy that heading towards the Mabrouk oilfield operated by France’s Total oil. An LNA spokesman has been quoted saying that there were at least nine air strikes on the convoy and that five of the militants were killed and 20 wounded.

The LNA’s helicopter squadron is usually based at Benghazi’s Benina air base.

Yesterday, two people were killed and another 13 wounded when the LNA launched air strikes on Jufra air base some 200 kilometres further south. BDB fighters have been based there, along with Misratan forces. It is thought that the BDB convoy attacked at the Mabrouk oil field today set out from Jufra air base.

Texas-Mexican Citizen Faces 8 Years In Prison And Deportation For Voter Fraud
[THEGATEWAYPUNDIT] Prosecutors say the reason officials at the elections department in Dallas didn’t stop the voter fraud from happening is because Rosa Ortega claimed she was a citizen on her application.

Now the Tarrant County D.A.’s office is calling for those claims to be verified before handing out registration cards.

Her attorney said she has a learning disability and was confused about the difference between being a citizen and a legal resident, so she thought she was allowed to vote.

"The jury didn’t believe that story. They believed that the defendant knew exactly what she was doing, and they responded accordingly," Prosecutor Jonathan White said.

White told CBS11, when Ortega tried to register to vote in Tarrant County, she admitted she was not a citizen, so her application was rejected. When she told them she had already been voting in Dallas County, that’s when Sherlocks started looking into her case. Defense attorney Clark Bidsall said his client’s case has been politicized and now Ortega has a difficult road ahead even after her sentence.

Queens ISIS wannabe pleads guilty to attacking FBI agent with a knife in the name of the terror group
Some more connected lone wolves.
[NYDailyNews] An ISIS devotee leading a small cell of fellow wannabes admitted Friday to plotting attacks for the terror group.

Munther Omar Saleh, 21, pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court to planning to aid the organization and scheming to attack law enforcement.

He was enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
, armed with knives and charging at a federal officer tailing him.

His co-defendant, Fareed Mumuni,
...a.k.a. Fereed Mumuni and Freed Mumuni because of those layers of editors and fact checkers...
22, admitted to the plot Thursday -- plus charges Mumuni tried to fatally stab an FBI agent with a kitchen knife.

The agent, helping execute a search warrant at Mumuni's house, was protected by body armor.

Saleh, the one-time Queens college student, said Friday he spoke with others about traveling to join ISIS. He said he got hiking boots for a co-conspirator trying to get to Syria, and passed along contact information for someone he thought was an ISIS recruiter. The group of terror wannabes included several New Jersey men.

If Saleh opted for trial, Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Solomon said the government would've shown Saleh was in contact with "attack controller" Junaid Hussain.
...also cleverly known as "Abu Hussain", the young former Birmingham, Englander was briefly the proud husband of middle aged, former punk rocker Sally Jones and one of ISIS' long-distance jihad coaches. He was killed at age 21 by a drone in Raqqa in August 2015.
Solomon said Hussain relayed instructions to Saleh on how to build a pressure cooker bomb like the one that killed three people during the 2014 Boston Marathon.

Hussain, a hacker with a big role in ISIS online recruitment, was killed in an August 2015 U.S. air strike in Syria.

As Brooklyn Federal Judge Margo Brodie made sure Saleh understood what he was doing by pleading, she asked if anyone threatened or forced him to plead.

Saleh paused before saying yes.

The judge noted the hesitation and asked again if he'd been pushed into the plea.

"Partly. More like, my counsel said, between a rock and a hard place," he said.

Both Saleh and Mumuni are scheduled for May 16 sentencing. Saleh faces up to 53 years and Mumuni could get a maximum 85 years.

"In the name of ISIS's false and hateful ideology, these defendants attacked the law enforcement officers who work tirelessly to preserve the safety of our communities," said U.S. Attorney Robert Capers.

Saleh's lawyer, Deborah Austern Colson, and Saleh's parents did not comment after the plea.

Khaled Sharrouf first Australian to lose citizenship under anti-terrorism laws
[TheGuardian] Islamic State fighter Khaled Sharrouf, who gained infamy after his young son was pictured holding a severed head, is believed to have become the first dual national stripped of Australian citizenship under anti-terrorism laws.
Khaled is not exactly an "Australian" as you and I think of the word...
A spokeswoman for the immigration minister, Peter Dutton, told Guardian Australia on Saturday an individual had been stripped of citizenship under anti-terror laws which passed parliament in 2015. She declined to name the person but the Australian newspaper reported it is dual national Sharrouf.

He went to fight with Isis in Syria in 2013, a year after being released from prison for his role in a terrorism plot. In 2015, there were unconfirmed reports Sharrouf had died in a drone strike in Mosul. However he continued to be the subject of an active arrest warrant.

He gained infamy for posing in photographs with the severed heads of Syrian soldiers in 2014. Sharrouf’s seven-year-old son was pictured holding up the severed head of a Syrian government official around the same time.

In February last year it was reported the widow of Sharrouf had died in Syria, leaving her five children and a grandchild stranded and in hiding in Raqqa. Tara Nettleton is believed to have died from complications after an operation for appendicitis in September. Nettleton followed Sharrouf to Syria from Sydney with their children in 2014.

Army has killed 500 militants in North Sinai operations: Egypt's military spy chief
[AlAhram] Egypt's chief of military intelligence says the Moslem Brüderbund allied itself with the Islamic State Lion of Islam group since a popular uprising toppled former president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013.

Egypt's Chief of Military Intelligence Mohammed Farag El-Shahat said that the Egyptian army has killed nearly 500 forces of Evil in Sinai in military operations launched under the name "the martyr's right' since 2015.
A respectable number, if it's real...
Egypt's security forces have been battling a decade-long Lion of Islam Islamist insurgency, which intensified since the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013, mainly in North Sinai 's Rafah, Arish, and Shiekh Zuwied cities.

Militant attacks have left hundreds of police and army personnel dead.
More or less one for one, then?
El-Shahat statements came during the Egyptian Armed Forces 24th intellectual seminar titled "Counter-terrorism; a Nation's Will" that commenced on Thursday.

The Egyptian military commander affirmed that the banned Moslem Brüderbund organization formed an alliance with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Lion of Islam group based predominantly in North Sinai, a move aimed at putting the Brotherhood back in power.

El-Shahat pointed out to a statement made by a Moslem Brüderbund leader in late 2013, in which he said that terrorism in Sinai would stop at the moment president Morsi returns back to power.

In late 2013, Egypt designated the Moslem Brüderbund a terrorist organization, after the authorities blamed a number of deadly attacks against security forces in the aftermath of the ouster of Morsi.

"Militants attempted to announce an Islamic state in North Sinai's Sheikh Zuweid city after they launched a major attack on 1 July 2015," El-Shahat stated, affirming that army and police in North Sinai foiled this attempt, causing tangible loses among forces of Evil and terrorist groups.

The General Command of the Armed Forces also issued its first official statement on battles against Islamist forces of Evil who attacked army posts that day.

The statement said that the army killed more than 100 forces of Evil during its counter-attacks in Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah cities, after 17 army personnel including four officers were killed during the fighting and 13 others were maimed in the attacks.

The Egyptian military intelligence chief also said that the state of instability in many countries in the region contributed to the rise of terrorist attacks in Egypt during this period.

Oil industry can’t stand another price collapse – Venezuela
World oil industry can’t stand another price collapse, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro said, according to the message posted on the website of Venezuelan Ministry of the People's Power of Petroleum and Mining.
I think the US oil industry can handle it just fine. We'll cap off some of the wells drilled in the last couple years and wait. How long can you wait, Mr. Maduro?
Maduro expressed regret for the massive layoffs in transnational oil companies in 2016 as a result of the decrease in oil prices.

Last year, more than 50,000 oil workers were fired across the world, added Venezuelan president.

He warned that if the prices collapse again, there could be massive bankruptcy of companies, starting with transnational companies.
Don't worry, all your companies are going bankrupt anyway -- the ones you haven't seized, that is...
Venezuelan president invited companies to work towards compliance with the agreement reached between OPEC and non-OPEC countries in Vienna.

During a meeting in Vienna, Austria, on Nov. 30, 2016, OPEC members decided to implement a new production target of 32.5 million barrels per day. Later, non-OPEC countries agreed to cut the output by 558,000 barrels per day during the meeting held Dec. 10, 2016. Eleven non-OPEC countries – Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brunei, Equatorial Guinea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Oman, Russia, Sudan, and South Sudan – agreed to reduce the oil output.
Not a single US or Canadian fracker agreed, you'll notice...
OPEC and non-OPEC countries pledged to start implementing the deal from Jan. 1, 2017 for six months, extendable for another six months.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
IDF seizes work permits of family of suspected Petah Tikva terrorist
[IsraelTimes] Army raids home of alleged gunman in central Israel attack; soldiers also arrest Paleostinian smugglers, seize guns.

Security forces raided the West Bank home of a suspected terrorist on early Friday morning, a day after a combination shooting-stabbing attack that left five people injured in the central city of Petah Tikva, the army said.

The Israel Defense Forces confiscated the work permits of family members of the alleged assailant, identified by Paleostinian media as 18-year-old Sadeq Nasser Abu Mazen from Beita al-Foka, a village south of Nablus.

A number of Abu Mazen’s family members were also questioned, the army said.

On Wednesday evening, the suspected terrorist shot up a bus near Petah Tikva’s outdoor market. One man was shot and lightly maimed, while another two women were lightly injured by shrapnel. He then expeditiously departed at a goodly pace, trying to shoot more, but his gun jammed. He was eventually cornered by citizens and stabbed one of them with a screwdriver as they tried to subdue him outside a sewing machine shop.

In addition, the army also locked away
Please don't kill me!
six people in the northern West Bank as part of a crackdown on Paleostinians who illegally enter Israeli territory, normally for work, a spokesperson says. Some of these "illegal infiltrators" have also carried out terror attacks inside Israel.

It was not immediately clear if Abu Mazen had a legal work permit or if he too entered Israel illegally. On Thursday, police placed a gag order on the investigation.

Also overnight, an IDF soldier monitoring surveillance cameras in the Hebron region spotted a suspicious vehicle approaching the security fence that surrounds most of the West Bank.

Troops were called to the scene. Upon searching the car, the soldiers discovered a gun and ammunition inside. The IDF said the weapon was an M-16 assault rifle. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
a picture of the gun shows that it is more likely a Carlo-style improvised submachine gun, made to look like an M-16.

Though the stock, pistol grip and handguard are similar to those on an M-16 -- all of which are pieces that can be purchased commercially, as they are not involved in the actual shooting mechanism -- the gun seized has a noticeably different type of receiver, one which is far more consistent with Carlo-style submachine guns.

When asked about these differences, an IDF spokesperson maintained that the weapon was an M-16 and said the disparities could be the result of home modifications.

A Carlo-style submachine gun is significantly less accurate, reliable and thus far cheaper than an M-16, which can cost tens of thousands of shekels on the West Bank black market.

Another Carlo-style submachine gun belonging to an alleged Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, member was also located in the West Bank village of Surif, near Hebron, the army said.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli troops picked up 10 more Paleostinian suspects who are believed to have taken part in so-called "popular terrorism," a catch-all term referring to rock throwing and taking part in violent protests.

One person was arrested in Fahma, in the northern West Bank, where troops also uncovered a number of Molotov cocktails and bullets, the army said.

The other nine suspects were also arrested in the northern West Bank, two were from Beit Amin, three from Azoun Atma, one from Beida, one from Utzrin and two from the new Askar refugee camp, outside Nablus.
A Ynet article adds:
An IDF force interrogated Abu Mazen family members at their home in Nablus late into the night. Following the revocation, the family members will not be able to enter Israel's territory.
From another Ynet article:
Palestinian media outlets reported that security forces arrested the father of the terrorist who executed the attack on Thursday in Petah Tikva.

In the early morning hours, two of the terrorist's friends were arrested, as well as another person, who was suspected of driving him into Israel.

Cautious Calm in al-Laylaki after Armed Clash between Families
[An Nahar] A dispute between the Zoaiter and Rahil families escalated into an armed clash Thursday in the Beirut southern suburb of al-Laylaki, state-run National News Agency reported.

The violence, reportedly over the elopement of a young woman from the Rahil family, damaged several vehicles and houses in the neighborhood, NNA said.

"Gunmen withdrew from the streets after they learned that security forces were heading to the area as a state of cautious calm engulfed the region," the agency added.

This Week in Guns, February 11th, 2017

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

New Mexico is about the join the eight states that require a background check of private firearms sales and casual transfers. The latest example of this type of law was in Nevada, which passed a plebiscite requiring universal background check for all firearms transfers. The federal government said that the new law uses their resources in way they cannot allow, so they will not be pushing through background checks through with the new law. Basically, the new gun law in Nevada makes it a crime to casually transfer a firearm, but there is not mechanism for a background check for firearms transfers.

In New Mexico, the new law is insidious. It allows casual firearms transfers between family members, but only one way. Giving the firearm back triggers a background check requirement. As far as I can tell from the article the new law is expected to be passed as legislation.

Just as well. Give the people enough pot, and they will vote to remove their own giblets.

In Connecticut, fees for firearms licenses fees are about to almost triple in some classes of firearms licenses.

Connecticut is a firearms basket case as it is and it is an example of why the courts have been consistently wrong about local firearms laws. The new, draconian fees will likely pass court scrutiny because the courts all the way to the top have said, without equivocation, that fees and taxes are untouchable regardless of the underlying purpose.

Funnily enough, the state expects to raise money by imposing higher taxes, except that it never works out that way.

In Rantburg's O-Club we have been having a discussion about how to deal with feral hawgs. They are a growing problem in southern states so much so the season in some states for hunting wild hogs is year round with unlimited harvesting. The issue has been what kind of night scope should a shooter use to hunting wild hogs at night.

A lot of good advice has been offered, including the idea that the hunter should use night vision goggles and shoot over open sights. My own advice was that thermal cameras were cheap and becoming cheaper.

Just trying to help

Loads.

It strikes me the law in unenforceable. It also increases crime because it makes criminals out of law-abiding citizens. It seems like a back-door attempt to register all firearms.

#7  We use thermals at wrecks to quickly, effectively search the roadside to see if someone was thrown, or if delirious and walked into the field we can see the heat signature of the foot prints.

Unless someone told me otherwise, I'd go goggles and open sight so I can look around. I would also then have a set of goggles for other nighttime activities. Looks like gen 1 is fairly affordable, gen 2 is a few bucks, and gen 3 gets up there.

Thermals are still a few bucks for a decent set but I think the technology will improve the quality and price over the next couple years. Our new service camera cost less then our last one, and can broadcast the image to a remote viewing.

city has been killed, the ARG Presidential Palace said.

According to ARG Palace, Qari Munib was killed during a counter-terrorism operation conducted on 13th January in Achin district of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
Qari Munib was involved in some of the major attacks in Kabul city, including a deadly attack on protesters in Kabul and attack on Baqir-ul-Uloom mosque in west of Kabul city that left scores of people dead or maimed.

He was also involved in an attack on Nepali security guards in Kabul city late last year.

ARG Palace said the ISIS leader was targeted in line with the President Ghani and National Security Council’s instructions and in join coordination with the coalition forces based in Afghanistan.

The operation against Qari Munib was a part of the ongoing counter-terrorism operations being jointly conducted to ascertain, approach, and target top commanders of the terrorist groups in the country, ARG Palace said.

Following the confirmation of Qari Munib’s death, President Ghani said "Those committing crimes against us, will not manage to flee from the grip of justice. Just will be served either through fair trials or the perpetrators will be targeted by the security forces."

Libya sees new threat from ISIL after defeat at Sirte
[The National] ISIS bandidos Death Eaters have begun attacks on Libya’s oil and water pipelines, posing a deadly new threat to the country, Libyan defence officials say.

The holy warrior group lost its Libya headquarters in the central coastal city of Sirte in December after a six-month offensive by militias backed by US air power, but Libyan officials and foreign diplomats say its fighters have now fanned out across the southern desert into desert valleys and inland hills, as they seek to exploit Libya’s political divisions..

Three separate ISIS groups have been identified based in different parts of the Sahara, and, say officials, they are striking at the country’s vulnerable oil and water infrastructure.

One group is near the Mabrouk and Zalla oilfields on the edge of the Sirte Basin, home to the bulk of Libya’s oil production, with a second south-west of Sirte, near the town of Bani Walid.

A third operates close to the border with Algeria, where French officials say ISIS and other groups including Al Qaeda have supply lines crossing into Chad and Niger. Attacks in recent weeks by this group on electricity infrastructure near the southern city of Sabha have worsened power outages in the capital.

"While [ISIS] no longer controls territory, the fight against terrorism is far from finished," the head of the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Support Mission In Libya (UNSMIL) Martin Kobler told the UN Security Council on Wednesday. "The country’s borders remain porous. Terrorists, human and weapons traffickers and criminal gangs continue to exploit the security vacuum."

American air strikes have already hit one group, reporting at least 80 bandidos Death Eaters killed on January 19 when two US-B2 Spirit bombers targeted two ISIS camps in the desert south-east of Sirte.

Photographs of the bombing sites show that the bandidos Death Eaters were well organised, with dugouts, jeeps, satellite phones and supply dumps.

Meanwhile ISIS continues to hold two enclaves in the eastern city of Benghazi, fighting against the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, the country’s most powerful military commander.

Libyan officials say in recent weeks ISIS has hit pipelines of the Great Man-Made River, the network on which the capital Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and many coastal towns depend for much of their water supply. Other attacks have hit electricity pylons and oil pipelines.

"They work and move around in small groups," Libyan intelligence official Mohammed Gnaidy in the western city of Misrata told Rooters news agency. "The only solution to eliminate them in this area [in the desert] is through air strikes."

Mass Graves Found in Western Iraq
[An Nahar] Iraqi soldiers have discovered two shallow graves containing the bodies of people executed by the Islamic State

group in the western desert town of Rutba, officials said Thursday.

"The Iraqi army found two mass graves in Rutba containing the bodies of members of the security forces and of civilians," a captain in the army's 1st division told AFP.

He said the first indications suggested the victims had been executed by IS when the jihadist group took control of the town in mid-2014.

Rutba, a small town of significant strategic value, lies on the road to Jordan, about 390 kilometers (245 miles) west of Baghdad.

The mayor of the town, which was retaken from IS in May last year, said one grave was found on a plot in a central neighborhood that had been used to dump hospital waste while the other was located on Rutba's southern edge.

"The bodies we have seen have bullet impacts... We don't know the exact number of bodies because we are leaving this work to a forensic team but we expect there are about 25," Imad Meshaal said.

Rutba is very isolated in the desert of Anbar, a vast western province that has long been a Sunni Lion of Islam stronghold and has borders with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, Jordan and Syria.

IS bully boyz have attacked the town several times since the security forces retook control of it.

Dozens of mass graves have been found across areas of Iraq that IS seized in 2014 and have since been retaken by the security forces.

Jumblat Hopes Lebanon's Judicial System Same as US, Wahhab Lashes out at Him
[An Nahar] Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Wally Jumblat
... Druze politician, head of the Progressive Socialist Party, who's been on every side in Leb at least four times. He'll sell you his friends for a dollar, but family comes higher because of shipping and handling...
said on Friday that Leb must develop a judicial system similar to the one in the United States after it refused to reinstate President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's ban on refugees.

"I wish that the judicial system in Leb resembles that of the United States which suspended a draft law issued by Trump against immigration," said Jumblat in a tweet.

"The American judiciary dealt a slap in the face to Trump's chaotic policy," added Jumblat.

He went on and asked: "When will we see a similar governing body in the Arab world?"

On January 27, Trump issued a decree that summarily denied entry to all refugees for 120 days, and travelers from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
for 90 days. Refugees from Syria were blocked indefinitely.

A US court on Thursday unanimously refused to reinstate Donald Trump's ban on refugees and nationals from seven Moslem-majority countries, dealing the new president and his controversial law-and-order agenda a major defeat.

For his part, former Minister Wiaam Wahhab --a Druze rival of Jumblat--criticized the latter's tweets and said: "Leb can witness such a judicial system only when people like you stop pressuring the it into the continued detention of Bahij Abou Hamzah."

Abou Hamzah, ex-Jumblat aide and businessman, was sentenced to jail on charges filed by Jumblat.

"You must stop hypocrisy because when Leb develops a judiciary similar to that in the US, you will be become work-less," added Wahhab.

Afghanistan
US commander in Afghanistan requests several thousand new troops
The commander of the US war in Afghanistan has requested several thousand new troops for America’s longest-ever conflict to break what he described as a stalemate. In the first indication of the course the 15-year-old war will take under Donald Trump, army Gen John Nicholson told a Senate panel that he was facing a shortfall of troops necessary for training Afghan forces to ultimately replace their US and Nato counterparts.

“They could come from our allies as well as the United States. We have identified the requirement and the desire to advise below the corps level. It would enable us to thicken our advisory efforts across the Afghanistan mission,” Nicholson told the Senate armed services committee on Thursday.

Nicholson acknowledged that the Taliban has gained territory across the country in 2016, and that the Afghans have “tens of thousands” of absent or nonexistent Afghan soldiers on their payrolls. But he described the current situation in Afghanistan as a “stalemate.

One reason for the deadlock, Nicholson said, was the increasing spoiler role of Russia, which has been accused of aiding Trump in the election and with which Trump seeks to reconcile. Nicholson said Russia was seeking to undermine the US and Nato in Afghanistan, adding that he was “concerned about the increasing level” of unspecified Russian support for Taliban insurgents.

Nicholson said he was not seeking additional forces for counter-terrorism operations, the other remaining mission bequeathed to Trump by Barack Obama, who initiated a troop surge and then reduced them to their present levels of 8,400.

It is unclear how Trump will respond to Nicholson’s request. Over the years, Trump has publicly advocated withdrawal from Afghanistan and characterized the war as a disaster.

Nicholson said he believed the Trump administration was “open to a discussion of an objectives-based approach” that would include a commensurate troop increase, and said he thought it would be possible to meet US objectives with fewer than 30,000 troops.

The commander expected to discuss the force request “in greater detail” at next week’s conference of Nato defense ministers.

Trump has previously called the war in Afghanistan – a conflict in which nearly 2,400 US troops have died – “a total and complete disaster”. In 2013, he tweeted, “Let’s get out of Afghanistan,” calling the war “nonsense” and a waste of money.

Last month, the Taliban sent an open letter to the new US president, urging him to follow through on his longstanding position. “The responsibility to bring to an end this war also rests on your shoulders,” the insurgent group said.

Nicholson subtly contradicted Trump’s positions on defense. He conspicuously praised Nato for its persistent contributions to Afghanistan, despite Trump calling Nato irrelevant in an age of terrorism. He criticized Russia’s role in Afghanistan, where he said it was beginning to “publicly legitimize the Taliban” through a “false narrative” that the insurgents, not the Afghan government, were fighting the Islamic State presence in the country.

Though Nicholson praised Obama’s June relaxation of restrictions on US airstrikes, the commander criticized Obama’s troop reductions and limitations, and advocated managing the war “by objective, not force-manning level”.

Europe
Hungary 'stoops to new low' over treatment of asylum seekers
Hungary has been accused of “stooping to a new low” after it announced plans to detain all asylum seekers in shipping containers near the border with Serbia.

The government of prime minister Viktor Orbán says the measure is necessary to secure the EU’s borders and deter migrants coming into the country from the Middle East via Serbia. It has already set up two razor fences on the border with Serbia and is deploying more than 600 soldiers to guard the fence.

But Amnesty International said the measure was in clear contravention of EU law and the Refugee Convention.
Everything Amnesia Int'l doesn't like is against a law somewheres...
According to the AFP news agency, asylum seekers are to be held at four military bases along the fence, where they will be housed in barracks built from shipping containers. Each camp will have room for 150 people, the agency reported.
Plug the containers together and it might not be too bad -- add some heat, set up a few as a dining hall, and so on. Beats being in Aleppo...
The government is due to submit its proposal to parliament, which will then debate and vote on the measures within weeks. It will involve taking hundreds of existing asylum seekers to the container camps. The new regulations will be implemented only as long as the government-declared state of emergency over mass migration is in place, such as the one currently in force.

The government’s chief spokesman, Zoltán Kovács, had announced at a briefing in London this week that all asylum seekers will be detained during the entire period of their asylum application, rather than being released pending an appeal.

But giving further details following government meetings Orban’s chief of staff, János Lázár, said all current and future asylum seekers would be transferred to container camps in a so-called “transit zone” near the border, where they would be held for the duration of their asylum application process.

Asylum appeals would by default be conducted with the asylum seeker attending only via a video link to a court, rather than in person.

“People’s freedom of movement will be removed,” said Lázár. “They will be able to stay only in a place designated for them. This place will be the state border, where containers suitable for accommodating 200 to 300 people will be erected. Migrants will have to wait there for a legally binding decision on their claims.”

Gauri van Gulik, Amnesty International’s deputy director for Europe, said: “Rounding up all men, women and children seeking asylum and detaining them for months on end in container camps is a new low in Hungary’s race to the bottom on asylum seekers and refugees.

“By amending a raft of laws to lock up all asylum seekers, the Hungarian government will inflict unnecessary trauma, compounding what people seeking protection have already suffered. The government has in no way proven that the detention of each asylum seeker would be reasonable, necessary and proportionate. Detention should always be the last resort and not an knee-jerk reaction, as is the case here.

“This is further evidence that the EU needs to stand firm on Hungary’s flagrant disregard for European and international law.”

People seeking asylum cannot currently be detained in the so-called “transit zones” along Hungary’s border with Serbia for more than four weeks, after which they must be allowed inside the country. The reform under consideration would remove that time limit and introduce mandatory detention for the whole duration of the asylum procedure.

Turkey continues attacking Syrian rebels near Manbij
The Turkish army continues to target positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) west of Manbij city in northern Syria. Turkish forces bombed the SDF-held towns of Arima and Kawkali on Friday evening. Local sources reported that the Turkish army heavily bombarded SDF positions in both towns, located about 20 kilometers west of Manbij, using heavy machine-guns and artillery fire.

This is not the first time the Turkish army targets the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in western Manbij. On 17 January, Turkey’s military launched a similar attack, targeting SDF headquarters.

Last Monday, the Turkish army also shelled the Kurdish district of Afrin in northwestern Aleppo, targeting the villages of Maranaaz, Vilat al-Qadi and Sheikh Issa after entering the Syrian territory. The Turkish media confirmed the shelling.

“Turkish army and affiliated terrorists are heavily shelling east Efrin [Afrin] from Azaz city since Monday evening — the attacks continued until the moment,” the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) said in a statement.

Kurdish officials have condemned Turkey’s attempts to build border walls near Kobani, Efrin and Hasakah province, and entering Syrian territory.

Britain
Iraq war claims unit to be shut down, says UK defence secretary
The unit investigating claims of abuse by British forces in Iraq is to close down, the government has announced, saying it will also greatly reduce similar inquiries connected to Afghanistan and Northern Ireland.

The Iraq historic allegations team (Ihat) will close as early as this summer, the defence secretary, Michael Fallon, said on Friday. Any remaining investigations – expected to soon fall to about 20 from a peak of 3,000 – will be investigated by the Royal Navy police. They would be expected to complete any final investigations by the summer of 2018, Fallon added.

He said the decision was made after the campaigning human rights lawyer Phil Shiner was struck off this month over multiple professional misconduct charges, including dishonesty and lack of integrity. Shiner had led legal claims against British troops for their treatment of Iraqi detainees after the 2003 invasion. His company, Public Interest Lawyers (Pil), was involved in passing on almost two-thirds of the 3,392 allegations received by Ihat.
He was a progressive wanker and someone who lived by the mantra of "by any means necessary" ...
Shiner had pursued the case of Baha Mousa, a Basra hotel worker whose death after 36 hours in British military custody prompted an inquiry which condemned the treatment of detainees.

However, other allegations turned out to be untrue. In 2014 the long-running al-Sweady inquiry rejected claims that British soldiers murdered insurgents and mutilated their bodies. Shiner later admitted paying an Iraqi middleman to find claimants, in breach of professional standards.

His downfall was “the beginning of the end for Ihat”, said Fallon. “This will be a relief for our soldiers who have had allegations hanging over them for too long. Now we are taking action to stop such abuse of our legal system from happening again.”

As part of this process, the Royal Military police is to discontinue about 90% of 675 allegations of abuse from Afghanistan, a Ministry of Defence statement said.

For historical investigations in Northern Ireland, the government will ensure “veterans and former police officers are not dragged through the courts in disproportionate numbers compared with terrorists”, the statement added.

General Sir Nicholas Carter, chief of the general staff, said credible abuse claims should be investigated. “However, a significant number of claims made against our soldiers have not been credible,” he added.

But Amnesty International said the failings of Shiner and his firm should not mean all abuse claims were dropped.

ISIS executes 12 for desertion in Mosul

[ARA News] Erbil – The Islamic State (ISIS) radical group has executed 12 of its own militant fighters in northwestern Iraq for trying to flee the group’s strongholds in Mosul city of Nineveh Governorate, local sources reported on Friday.

The militants were reportedly arrested by ISIS guards in western Mosul while trying to flee to the eastern part of the city–which is now held by Iraqi security forces.

“The Islamic State accused them of treason for trying to surrender to the US-backed Iraqi forces,” local media activist Abdullah al-Malla told ARA News.

The 12 jihadi fighters were publicly beheaded in the Zanjabili neighbourhood in western Mosul.

This comes one week after ISIS executed six of its own fighters in the town of Margada in northeastern Syria for escaping the battlefield in Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

The organisation has been working on clearing areas liberated from ISIS in northern Syria, by dismantling explosives.

Dilo Mihemed Eli, Spokesperson of Roj Organization, told ARA News: “We’s recently seen many cases of civilian casualties due to the explosion of ISIS landmines. Some of the victims don’t survive due to severity of injuries. Those who survive such explosions mostly end up with a permanent disabilities. In many cases a leg or an arm is being amputated.”

Although Roj Organization has dismantled thousands of landmines in the the past few months, the organisation still needs to make a greater effort in order to clear northern Syria from ISIS explosives.

Toni Mamed, Deputy Chief of Roj Organization, said: “The main reason for the civilian casualties due to explosion of landmines is our limited abilities to clear all areas liberated from ISIS.”

“There are huge areas that need to be cleared of mines, which in some cases exceeds our capacity,” Mamed told ARA News. “It mostly takes longer than usual to clear larger areas, especially with the humble tools we’re obliged to use during such operations.”

Federal judge in Bundy trials orders government to disclose agent's identity
Exceedingly fine...
[USAToday] PHOENIX — A federal judge in Las Vegas ordered prosecutors in the Bundy Ranch standoff trials to turn over an investigative report accusing a key government witness of wrongdoing.

Judge Gloria Navarro denied motions to dismiss charges against 17 defendants who claimed the government withheld evidence by concealing misconduct allegations against the federal agent in charge of operations during the 2014 standoff.

Navarro said prosecutors had a duty to release a full copy of a report by the Department of Interior's Office of the Inspector General naming the agent, calling it "material evidence" that could be used to impeach the government's witness.

"The OIG Report details several violations of federal ethics regulations, misuse of government property, misuse of a government position, and 'a lack of candor when interviewed,' " Navarro wrote in a ruling Wednesday. "At a minimum, (defendants) may use this alleged misconduct on cross-examination to impeach (the agent)."

Opening statements began Thursday in the first of three trials against ranchers and militia members accused of conspiracy when they took up arms in 2014 to stop Bureau of Land Management officials from seizing cattle owned by Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy.
