If you've got it...
It's been a long time since we've had a bleg. I always hate to ask. It makes me feel like I have no teeth left and I'm standing on a traffic island holding a sign claiming to be a homeless vet ("God bless!")

Actually I have a perfectly nice home, thank you, though the toilet did overflow last night and one of the dogs ate my granddaughter's shoe. I am an actual vet, but I still retain a good number of my teeth, with the help of a VA dentist.

I have a PayPal account set up that's supposed to cover hosting, hardware purchases, and occasionally beer. My PayPal debit card expired one time without me noticing. In the confusion I switched the hosting to come out of our grocery account. So if you have spare change, help to replenish the actual Burg account will be much appreciated. For those of who have regular monthly donations set up, thank you. They are much appreciated.

Why Russian Disinformation Doesn't Equate To Trump's 'Alternative Facts'
[Integrity Initiative] At the start of 2017 decision-makers, journalists and the thinking public are more aware of disinformation than they have ever been. They may not call it "disinformation"; they may talk about "post-truth", "fake news" or even "alternative facts". But all of these are actually examples of disinformation, which is the conscious misrepresentation, partial or total, of fact.

The word "disinformation" has come into English and other languages (for example, French, désinformation; German, Desinformation; Spanish, desinformación) from Russian. The word "information" (информация) was adopted into Russian from English (and was originally from Latin); but the prefix dis- (Russian, дез-, hence дезинформация) was added in Russian. It is important to distinguish between disinformation and misinformation, which is the passing on unknowingly of false information. Misinformation is a Mistake; Disinformation is Deliberate.

The various terms now in use for the deliberate spreading of false information may help people to understand the concept of disinformation. But there is a very real danger that these terms could cause them to lose sight of the purpose of disinformation as put out by a country such as Russia, and that which has been termed "alternative facts" by a spokeswoman for the recently-inaugurated President of the USA, Donald Trump.

It is too early in the Trump Presidency to say exactly why the new US administration has taken a hostile attitude to the media and why the President and his entourage have used phrases such as "fake news" or "alternative facts". The very fact that they have chosen this route is a worrying phenomenon and it needs to be closely monitored by those who value freedom of speech and democratic values. It is recognised that President Trump has proposed some controversial policies on trade and immigration in particular. He has also made comments which have led some to be concerned over how he visualises the future of Western alliances, notably NATO. But there is an important difference between this and the aims of the policy of disinformation actively pursued by the Kremlin.
Horseshoe theory ?
Trump’s declared aim is to "put America first". He expects the rest of the world to be aware that this is the case and fit their own policies to this. His opposite number in the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, however, has a different agenda. Whilst he is "putting Russia first", he also has the aim of disrupting the countries of the West as much as possible. Trump may have a few close advisers attacking the US media and using peculiar-sounding phrases such as "alternative facts"; but Putin has overseen the creation of an army of people and institutions who have the deliberate aim of disrupting Western life and creating chaos in Western societies.

Maybe because the media is reviled by so many in the country that it shares its polling numbers of trust with Congress and thus got Trump elected? /rhet question

#6  The punch line: Behind RT and Sputnik there are thousands of people employed in Russia in what have been nicknamed “troll factories”: people working together in large groups constantly to push out vast amounts of disinformation via social media. There is no equivalent to this in the USA, and herein lies the crucial difference between what Trump is doing and what Putin is doing.

Correct. Sort of. In the US of A, the disinformation campaign is led by the president's opponent, not the president, and the 'troll factories' work for the old-stream media or the new old-stream-media (Huffpoo, etc.) instead of RT.

St. Pete-Havana yacht race resumes after 50 years (Opens to Video)
[Ten News Tampa Bay] ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- History is being made today as 550 sailors aboard 81 yachts left St. Petersburg for Havana, the first St. Petersburg to Habana Yacht Race in 50 years.

The last time the 284-nautical mile (326 miles) race was run was in the shadow of history. The year was 1959, and Cuban President Fulgencio Batista was losing power as Fidel Castro was on the rise.

The trip should take the crews a day or two. You can track the race by clicking here.

Another historical anecdote: A Cuban crew aboard the Micara is taking part for the first time since the travel and trade embargo was imposed five decades ago, Commodore José Miguel Díaz Escrich of Havana's Marina Hemingway told the Tampa Bay Times on Monday.

Science & Technology
AI makes the heart grow fonder
TOKYO There is a woman in China who has been told "I love you" nearly 20 million times.

Well, she's not exactly a woman. The special lady is actually a chatbot developed by Microsoft engineers in the country.

Some 89 million people have spoken with Xiaoice, pronounced "Shao-ice," on their smartphones and other devices. Quite a few, it turns out, have developed romantic feelings toward her.

Unlike human objects of affection, who might not return calls or emails, Xiaoice immediately responds to everyone
"Xiaoice, bring me a sammich.".
This is a big part of her appeal, according to Li Di, manager of Microsoft's Xiaoice artificial intelligence project.

The chatbot has developed a sizable following among 18- to 30-year-olds. Not everyone is looking for love, of course -- many just want someone to talk to.

"I like to talk with her for, say, 10 minutes before going to bed," said a third-year female student at Renmin University of China in Beijing. "When I worry about things, she says funny stuff and makes me laugh. I always feel a connection with her, and I am starting to think of her as being alive."

Xiaoice is likely just the tip of the iceberg for relationships between humans and AI.

ROBOT NUPTIALS

Scientists, historians, religion experts and others gathered in December at Goldsmiths, University of London, to discuss the prospects and pitfalls of this new age of intimacy. The session generated an unusual buzz amid the pre-Christmas calm on campus.

In Britain and elsewhere, the subject of robots as potential life partners is coming up more and more. Some see robots as an answer for elderly individuals who outlive their spouses: Even if they cannot or do not wish to remarry, at least they would have "someone" beside them in the twilight of their lives.
The, ahem, ladies who got themselves all spun up yesterday may want to look objectively at their future.

Mercer: The Donald Vs. The ‘Deep State'
[Townhall] President Trump has credibly accused Obama of wire-tapping the Trump Tower phones during the 2016 campaign.

Whether the tapping of Trump Tower phones can be traced to Obama; whether it's true or false--consider the counter-accusations floated by President Donald Trump about Barack Obama as part of a strategy.

The president is in survival mode. He's backed into a corner and is fighting back with brio, counter-punching at the Machine intent on unseating him. The Donald is destabilizing the destabilizers.

The opinion makers were incensed. "He had no evidence when he smeared his predecessor. Just contemplate the recklessness--the sheer indifference to truth," yelped the New York Times. "The administration can't substantiate the wire-tapping claim," screeched the MSNBC collective. On CNN it's been incontinent outrage, every hour of each day, since president Trump shot across the bow at Obama.

Marching in lockstep, media have ruled that Trump's wire-tapping taunt is unworthy of investigation. At the same time, the RussiaGate conspiracy with which media are hobbling the Trump presidency, and for which no credible proof exists--that's beyond reproach as a news story.

Fake News' fantastical idée fixe is that the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin to rob their "beloved" Hillary Clinton of her presidential birthright. To them, that's what you'd call a perfectly legitimate and logical line of inquiry!

From over at Gateway Pundit:
Lieutenant Colonel Tony Shaffer (ret.) told Hannity former NSA operatives who were fed up with the Clintons are the ones who hacked into the DNC and gave the hacked Podesta emails to WikiLeaks. The Democrats do not want to talk about this and it is probably why the DNC refused to allow the FBI to look at it’s hacked server.

Iraq
Iraqi insurgent fighter allegedly lied about identity, got through 'extreme' vetting (Video)
[FOX] Federal lawmakers are investigating how a former Iraqi insurgent fighter was able to lie about his identity and still get through America’s ’extreme’ vetting process.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions to find out why the terror suspect’s pending arrest was allegedly spiked just over a week before the election. Trump had run on a tough-on-terror platform and had been critical of President Obama’s refugee policy.

"When [Joint Terrorism Task Force] and the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Western District of Texas sought to prosecute this refugee, the local law enforcement and prosecutors allegedly ’met resistance’ from officials within the National Security Division’s Counter Terrorism section in Washington DC," Committee chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said in a March 6 letter to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
POTUS get-tough policies credited for sharp plunge in illegal immigration
[Wash Times] Illegal immigration across the southwest border plummeted in the weeks after President Trump took office, Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly announced Wednesday, calling the drop an early sign that Mr. Trump’s get-tough policies are working.

In addition to a drop in the number of illegal immigrants nabbed while attempting to cross, Mr. Kelly said, they have seen a dramatic spike in the rates charged by smugglers paid to sneak people into the U.S.

Routes that cost $3,500 in November now cost $8,000, he said -- another signal that smuggling cartels’ business is suffering.

Mr. Kelly called the drop in apprehensions unprecedented. The number of people caught at the border is considered a good indication of the overall flow, so a drop in apprehensions is believed to signal a drop in total number of illegal crossings.

"This trend is encouraging because it means many fewer people are putting themselves and their families at risk of exploitation, assault and injury by human traffickers and the physical dangers of the treacherous journey north," Mr. Kelly said.

Former Planned Parenthood Employees Describe Details of Abortions, Including Twins
[Free Beacon] Two former Planned Parenthood employees described in detail the abortions they witnessed and what employees did afterward with the remains in two new videos released Tuesday.

Live Action, a pro-life organization, released the videos of interviews with former Storm Lake, Iowa facility manager Sue Thayer and former Indianapolis nurse Marianne Anderson. Thayer described seeing the remains of twins after an abortion procedure and Anderson described the "callousness" of two abortionists who sifted through the remains to make sure all of the parts were retrieved.

Thayer explained how she watched an abortion in her facility and saw three arms in a bowl afterward. A co-worker told her that twins had just been aborted. Thayer asked the co-worker if they ever tell the women having the abortions if they had twins.

"No, it usually just upsets them," the co-worker responded.

Thayer described the disposal of the remains.

"There's this big, white porcelain sink, and they would dump it in there, rinse it, put the bowl back to use next time, and hit the plunger and it would flush, kind of like a toilet," she said. "I just remember standing there thinking, ’All those babies are in the Des Moines sewer system.'"

Thayer also said they would later put the remains in bags, tie them off, and put them in a freezer.

Mosul Doctors Say ISIS Wives Wanted to Birth Caliphate Cubs
[LI] As the Islamic state (ISIS) retreats from Mosul, Iraq, more locals have spoken out about life under the terrorist group. ISIS captured Iraq’s second largest city in the summer of 2014.

OB-GYN Dr. Fatima Khaleel spoke with The Sunday Times about the females she treated in Mosul, noting most of them desperately wanted to get pregnant by ISIS fighters to breed caliphate cubs.

Stories have circulated since Mosul fell to ISIS, but this is one of the first hand accounts from a doctor who had these females as patients:
"I had a lot of Isis wives come," Khaleel said last week, 50 miles east of Mosul, where she fled after Isis was driven from the eastern half of the city in January. "British, French, Russian. They wanted to get pregnant."

Khaleel said the brides came to her with all the same features: "their faces were covered, they were armed to the teeth and they were desperate to get pregnant."
These females also received free healthcare since they belonged to the high levels of ISIS.

Each wife arrived at Khaleel’s clinic "with an entourage -- sometimes carrying Kalashnikovs slung over their black robe-like abayas." From The Sunday Times:
"All Isis wives have the right to shoot at any time," Khaleel said. "They all had guns in their bags or in their pockets. I was so scared. These foreigners follow the rules of Isis 100% more than people from Mosul."/blockquote>

US proposes 73 mln acre oil, natural gas lease sale for Gulf of Mexico
The US Interior Department said it will offer 73 million acres offshore in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas exploration and development.

The proposed lease sale scheduled for Aug. 16 would include all available unleased areas in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the department said in a statement dated March 6.

"Opening more federal lands and waters to oil and gas drilling is a pillar of President Trump’s plan to make the United States energy independent," Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said in the statement.

Charles Krauthammer on RINOcare. (Video)
[Daily Caller] Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer is not impressed by the Republican plan to "repeal and replace" Obamacare.

House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady and House Committee on Energy and Commerce Chairman Greg Walden released the health care plan favored by congressional Republicans Monday evening, called the American Health Care Act.

The legislation is catching flack from some GOP lawmakers and conservative think-tanks that are publicly condemning the effort as lackluster, weak and largely a repackaging of Obamacare. Leading the charge is Sen. Rand Paul, who called the Republican platform "Obamacare Lite." (RELATED: Tom Price: House Repeal Effort Is ’A Work In Progress)

German intelligence boss: Threat level remains high

[DW] Hans-Georg Maassen, president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), Gemany's domestic security agency, said that an important indicator was the high number of leads that his office continues to receive both nationally and from foreign sources. "We are seeing a qualitative change in the type of information we're getting," Maassen said. During the period after the Berlin attack [December 19, 2016] until the start of this year, 20 so-called unspecific threat indicators were examined. In the best-case scenario, security officials are able to discover plans for attacks and prevent them from happening.

The BfV also considers information leading to raids on apartments or arrests by police officers to be a measure of success. In this regard, the hotline on Islamist terrorism, or HiT, is becoming ever more significant. The number of contacts via the hotline in 2016 (1,100) more than doubled compared to the number recorded in 2015. But, as Maassen said, there has also been growth in the number of potentially violent Islamists, with the figure currently standing at almost 1,600.
...the number of known jihadis, at any rate.
There is no doubt, he said, that Germany is increasingly becoming a focal point for the terrorist militia Islamic State, or IS.

5 Afghan teens who raped boy to be expelled from Sweden

[Ynet] A Swedish appeals court has overturned a lower court's ruling and ordered that five Afghan teenagers convicted of the aggravated rape of an underage boy should be expelled from the country. The Svea Court of Appeal said Wednesday "the reasons for the expulsion outweigh those against."

The Uppsala District Court had ruled in December that the teens couldn't be expelled because they are under 18
...or possibly 35 pretending to be under 18 -- there's a lot of that going around these days...
and because of the security situation in Afghanistan. The unaccompanied, asylum-seeking minors had been sentenced to youth custody of up to 15 months for dragging another Afghan boy into a forest in October, threatening him with a knife and raping him.

Fresh Raids Target Beirut Financial Offices over Transfers to IS
[AnNahar] General Security agents carried out raids Wednesday against currency exchange offices and money transfer companies on suspicion they sent huge sums to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, a judicial source told AFP.

The source said the raids started Tuesday and were continuing on Wednesday against several institutions "on suspicion they transferred huge sums of money to areas controlled by IS in Raqa and elsewhere," referring to a jihadist stronghold in Syria.

The source added that a number of people were tossed into the calaboose for investigation but were not yet formally under arrest.

"Information is being gathered on the value of the money that was transferred," the source added.

In a statement issued Wednesday evening, General Security confirmed it had carried out raids across the country and detained "people of Syrian nationality," without giving figures.

It said those detained had admitted "belonging to a terrorist network" and to the transfer of money to "terrorist groups" without specifying which organizations allegedly received the funds.

Lebanese media reported that as much as $20 million had been transferred to the jihadist group, which holds territory in Syria and Iraq, as well as Libya.

But the judicial source dismissed that figure as "exaggerated" while conceding the suspected sum was nonetheless "huge."

On Wednesday afternoon, an AFP photographer saw security forces raiding three offices on bustling Hamra Street in the west of Beirut, and seizing documents and computer equipment.

Afterwards, the raided premises were sealed with red wax and a sign from the military prosecutor warning against their reopening "under penalty of prosecution."

There was no official statement on the raids, or details on the number of companies that had been targeted.

Leb's Central Bank imposes strict rules on financial institutions intended to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing, including caps on the amount that can be transferred overseas without additional supporting paperwork.

Leb has been heavily impacted by the war in neighboring Syria since it erupted in March 2011.

Smugglers Kill 22 African Migrants on Libya Beach
[AnNahar] People-smugglers have killed 22 African migrants colonists on a beach in western Libya, a security source said Wednesday.

The migrants colonists were set to embark from Sabrata beach, 70 kilometers (45 miles) west of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, in a perilous attempt to cross the Mediterranean, the source said.

They were killed after refusing to board their boat due to bad weather, the source added.

The Libyan Red Islamic Thingy confirmed the killings had taken place over the weekend, but was unable to provide further details.

The Geneva-based International Organization for Migration said Tuesday it had heard reports of the deaths.

"There seems to have been an exchange of fire between the smugglers, which resulted in the death of 22 migrants colonists," it said.

, Libya has become a key departure point for clandestine migration to Europe.

Smugglers organize frequent crossings from western Libya to the Italian island of Lampedusa, a 300-kilometer (190-mile) trip.

The IOM said 521 immigrants colonists died in the Mediterranean from January 1 to March 5, 2017.

Another 20,000 were able to reach the European coasts during the same period.

Yemen's Qaida Detains 2 Militants for 'Spying for US'

If men went on strike, what would America look like?
If men went on strike, what would America look like?

We'd all be hard-pressed to find a cop when in danger. America would be defenseless in fighting our enemies. There'd be no border police to keep evil at bay. No electricians to keep the power going. No fireman, ambulance drivers or truckers to carry our food.

No drivers of fuel trucks who fill our cars with gas. There'd be no one to work the natural gas and oil fields. No one to collect our trash.

Our train systems and commuter rails wouldn't run. The airports would shut down.

When women go on strike, life goes on and no one gets hurt. If men went on strike, all our lives would be upended. And people would die.

Thank you, men of America. The women who aren't marching know your value, and we thank you.

Keep up the great work.

Indicators show potatoes can grow on Mars
[PHYS.ORG] The International Potato Center (CIP) launched a series of experiments to discover if potatoes can grow under Mars atmospheric conditions and thereby prove they are also able to grow in extreme climates on Earth. This Phase Two effort of CIP's proof of concept experiment to grow potatoes in simulated Martian conditions began on February 14, 2016 when a tuber was planted in a specially constructed CubeSat contained environment built by engineers from University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Lima based upon designs and advice provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Ames Research Center (NASA ARC), Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,. Preliminary results are positive.

The Potatoes on Mars project was conceived by CIP to both understand how potatoes might grow in Mars conditions and also see how they survive in the extreme conditions similar to what parts of the world already suffering from climate change and weather shocks are already experiencing.

targets in Syria, as well as in neighboring countries if they give their approval, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Wednesday.

"I respect the illusory sovereignty of states, and I have secured the approval of Syria to strike positions (on its territory)," he told a conference in the Iraqi Kurdish city of Sulaimaniya.

Abadi on Feb. 24 announced the first Iraqi air strike inside Syrian territory, targeting Islamic State positions in retaliation for kabooms in Baghdad.

"I will not hesitate to strike the positions of the snuffies in the neighboring countries, we will keep on fighting them," Abadi said.

The total damage to property and infrastructure caused by Islamic State is about $35 billion, he said.

Afghanistan
Chinese troops operating in Afghanistan
This is very peculiar. China's military likes to announce to the world they are operating outside of their borders. Why are they silent about this?
WASHINGTON — There is mounting evidence that Chinese ground troops are operating inside Afghanistan, conducting joint counter-terror patrols with Afghan forces along a 50-mile stretch of their shared border and fueling speculation that Beijing is preparing to play a significantly greater role in the country's security once the U.S. and NATO leave.

The full scope of China's involvement remains unclear, and the Pentagon is unwilling to discuss it. “We know that they are there, that they are present,” a Pentagon spokesman said. Yet beyond a subtle acknowledgement, U.S. military officials in Washington and in Kabul would not respond to several detailed questions submitted by Military Times.

This dynamic stands in stark contrast to the two sides' feisty rhetoric over their ongoing dispute in the South China Sea, and to Washington's vocal condemnation of Russian and Iranian activity in Afghanistan. One explanation may be that this quiet arrangement is mutually beneficial.

If you're that determined to follow "the dictates of your conscience," don't be surprised if you're replaced by somebody willing to follow the will of the people.
In unofficial voting results, David Allaire, a city alderman and leading critic of the resettlement, trounced Louras, a 10-year mayoral incumbent, by a 776-vote margin, according to results cited by the Rutland Herald and WCAX-TV.

"I'm simply wishing him luck and I'm moving on," Louras told Seven Days Tuesday night. He declined further comment, saying he would "not hazard a guess" as to what the election results say about Rutland's support for refugees.

Allaire did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

While Louras campaigned on a series of issues, and touted a reduction in many categories of crime, along with an improved downtown business district, the refugee debate has dominated political life in Rutland for the past year.

#1  Rutland's not a big town, about 16,000 residents, so anything approaching 1,000 is indeed an ass kicking.

Cute little town - I did a century from Lebanon, NH to Rutland and back about twenty years ago, along Route 4 on an old piece of junk Team Fuji steel touring frame with Shimano 105 parts. High point was crossing the Sherburne Pass (part of the Appalachian Trail), at 2,150' elevation. Lots of climbing and good descents that day. Got the bike up to 53 MPH coming back from Rutland just before Killington Mountain Road. Fun ride!

According to social media activists, one of the tunnels contains several sculptures, including the famous winged bull, which is also known as Lamassu.

The Islamic State was searching for sculptures and monuments to sell them abroad, and thus providing the needed funds for the group.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Sweden brings back military conscription
The decision to require all 18-year-olds ‐ men and women alike ‐ to register for the military draft beginning next year is a direct result of Sweden’s increasing nervousness about Russia’s aggressive behavior in Ukraine, and lately, in and around the Baltic states.

Like the United States, Sweden has, since 2010, relied on volunteers for military service. But of late, it has been unable to fill its quota, prompting its defense ministry to re-introduce the draft. Of the estimated 13,000 Swedes born in 1999, about 4,000 will be selected to serve for up to a year.

Swedish officials make no bones about the reason for the change. Russia’s annexation of the Crimea in 2014 set off jitters around the world. Sweden, which is just across the Baltic Sea from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, is concerned that Russia may have designs on those three countries, which were once part of the former Soviet Union.

Man decapitates himself on subway tracks
[NYPOST] He placed his head on the subway tracks and waited for an oncoming train to take his life.

A distraught man left a suicide note on a Brooklyn platform and then did away with himself in gruesome fashion -- with a train decapitating him as it barreled into the station Wednesday.

Police found Rubin Antonio Rodriguez’s headless body at Carroll Gardens’ elevated Smith and Ninth streets station on the F and G lines at around 2:40 a.m., sources said.

The train operator told cops he tried to stop when he spotted the 20-year-old’s head lying in his path, but it was too late.

Before Rodriguez jumped down onto the tracks, he left his cell phone ‐ on which he penned a suicide note ‐ on the platform.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel moves to mute mosques' call to prayer over loudspeakers
[YAHOO] A law to muffle mosques' amplified calls to prayer in Israel and occupied East Jerusalem won preliminary approval on Wednesday in a charged parliamentary session where Arab politicians denounced the measure as racist.
They had to holler it out back in the days of the prophet, so what's the bitch?
Supporters of the bill say it is aimed at improving the quality of life of people living near mosques who have been losing sleep. The calls usually begin sounding a little before 5 A.M. through loudspeakers mounted on minarets

Opponents say the legislation, sponsored by right-wing parties, impinges on the religious freedom of Israel's Moslem minority. Arabs make up almost 20 percent of the population and have long complained of discrimination.

Two versions of law won initial approval and will go to committee for further discussion before any final vote in parliament, in what could be a lengthy process.

"You are committing a racist act," said Ahmed Tibi, an Arab politician, told supporters of the legislation.

The proposed law refers in general terms to "houses of worship", but it has been dubbed the "muezzin law" by the Israeli media, referring to the man who chants the Moslem call to prayer.

One of the bills would ban a summons to worship via loudspeakers between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. That would effectively mute one of the five daily calls emanating from mosques. The second proposal would bar amplification in residential areas at all hours and impose a 10,000 shekel ($2,700) fine for violations.

"This is a social-minded law that aims to protect citizens' sleep, without, God-forbid, harming anyone's religious faith," politician Motti Yogev, one of the bill's sponsors, said during a debate punctuated by shouting matches between the bill's backers and detractors.

NIA releases 2 Pak suspects
[Daily Excelsior] The NIA today handed over to the army two Pak youths whom it had tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
in connection with the last year’s terror attack on a military base in Jammu and Kashmire’s Uri that had killed 19 soldiers.

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) spokesperson said they have handed over Faisal Hussain Awan and Ahsan Khursheed to the Army’s 16 Corps headquarters in Jammu and they will be sent back home.

The spokesperson added that the NIA’s probe "revealed that the two suspects had crossed over to the Indian side after altercation with their parents due to pressure of studies".

"Evidence collected in the form of statements, technical analysis of their mobile phones, seized GPS devices and other circumstantial evidence collected by the NIA did not reveal any linkage of the suspects with the Uri attackers," the spokesperson added.

It was initially suspected that the two youths acted as guides for the Uri attackers.

On September 18 last year, four heavily armed Death Eaters had stormed the Uri Army base camp in Jammu and Kashmire killing 19 soldiers and injuring few others.

The NIA had taken over the investigation in the case from the state Police.

The two youths were arrested by the BSF and the Army in a joint operation at ’Angoor Post at Gavalata village in Uri when they were trying to infiltrate into India.

They were also brought to the NIA headquarters here for detailed interrogation.

The NIA has claimed that terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
was behind the Uri terror attack.

The spokesperson added that "further investigation is continuing in the case."

earlier today.

"We are aware of the report of Kabul hospital attack & are monitoring the situation. We stand ready to assist Afghan security services," the alliance said in a Twiiter post.

The alliance went on to say "Once again bully boyz show complete disrespect for humanity by attacking a hospital. We stand with Afghan people against terrorism."

"The attack on the Charsad Bester Military hospital is reprehensible and we condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms," the alliance added.

A group of bully boyz launched a coordinated attack on the main military hospital, the Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital, in Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan diplomatic part of the city earlier today.

The attack was launched after an kaboom took place near the entrance gate of the hospital, allowing the bully boyz to penetrate inside the hospital and start clash with the security forces.

organization" and aiding North Sinai bully boyz through social media platforms, al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Police say they arrested an 18-year-old man in Sharqiya for running a Facebook page aimed at spreading the krazed killer ideas of the Islamic State, as well as another man in the Red Sea governorate who was communicating via Facebook with North Sinai murderous Moslems.

Authorities say the second suspect provided murderous Moslem groups in North Sinai with information that aided in the carrying out of terrorist attacks, according to state security investigations.

The two men have been placed under 15 days precautionary detention pending further investigations.

Article 29 of Egypt's anti-terrorism law mandates a five-year prison sentence for anyone creating a website that calls for terrorist actions, impedes justice, or provides a platform for exchanging information about murderous Moslems and their movements.

KDF soldier killed, 5 injured in Al Shabaab bomb attack
A KDF soldier has died and five others injured after two IEDs exploded in different locations in Lamu near the Somali border. The explosions also destroyed armoured vehicles that the soldiers were using for patrols near Sirira and Ishakan on Tuesday afternoon. KDF said the explosive devices have been planted on the roads by the Al Shabaab.

More officers have been deployed in the area to reinforce surveillance and patrols.

Last night, US President Donald Trump spoke with President Uhuru Kenyatta on how to overcome terrorism and other regional security challenges through close cooperation.

President Trump expressed appreciation for Kenya’s significant contributions to the African Union Mission in Somalia and recognised Kenyan troops’ sacrifices in the fight against al-Shabaab.

The officers were in a convoy of a security team driving from the border town of Hullugho to Bulla-Golol in Fafi sub-county.

“I was ahead of the security convoy heading to Bulla-Golol area, when I was alerted that one of the vehicles in our team was involved in an accident,” sub-county commissioner Duncan Okwatch said. “My vehicle was ahead of the convoy and was about a kilometre away when the incident happened.”

Okwatch said the officer succumbed to injuries while the other six received first aid at their military camp in Hullugho town before they were airlifted to Nairobi for treatment.

IS ultra killed, several held
[Daily Excelsior] An alleged terrorist, suspected to have been influenced by the ISIS, was killed here early today after a 12-hour police operation in the wake of the Ujjain- Bhopal train blast.

Saifullah’s body was found with weapons lying next to him when the doors of the house where he was holed up since yesterday afternoon were opened at the end of the operation, ADGP (Law and Order) Daljit Chaudhary told a presser here.

The encounter came as Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh police teams carried out arrests of several "seld-radicalised" persons suspected to be linked to the train blast in Shajapur in MP yesterday in which 10 persons were maimed.

Among the suspects held are Kanpur residents Mohammed Faisal Khan, Mohammed Imran alias ’Bhai Jaan’ and Danish, who are believed to be brothers, according to police officials.

Police have also placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
Fakr-e-Alam alias Rishu from Etawah and Atiq Muzaffar, a resident of Kanpur, who allegedly was leading the group. Another person identified as Shailendra has also been held from Auraiya, officials said.

"These people were self-radicalised and self-proclaimed believers of ISIS ideology. They had no financing from any foreign source. They were using their own properties and other sources to fund their activities," he said.

Speaking about the encounter in Lucknow, ADGP Chaudhary said that eight pistols, ammunition, bomb-making equipment, timers, wires and other material were found in addition to gold and cash after the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) operation ended.

"They (suspects) tried several times to carry out small- scale terror activities,....Low-intensity bombs but were not successful," Chaudhary claimed.

The UP police ADGP also said that two laptops which have been recovered from Lucknow and Kanpur have made it clear that the suspects were self-radicalised and influenced by ISIS literature available on social media.

"They also browsed the internet to learn how to make bombs," Chaudhary said.

"We found three passports. Four persons were living in the rented house for a few months. They would meet and frequently do recce. We also found compass, batteries, six mobile phones, 45 gram of gold, foreign currency and literature in Urdu and English," he claimed.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the congregants were being herded into the paddy wagon...
Sartaz, the father of Saifullah, refused to claim his body saying that a "traitor" could not be his son. Another resident of Kanpur, Naseem Ahmad, claimed that his sons, who had been arrested, were innocent and demanded an impartial probe.

The police said more arrests are likely.

"We have information about the suspects on the run and we will soon catch them," ADG Chaudhary said.

He said some of the suspects were students and two of them had a small business.

"While we have made three arrests, others are in our custody. We will book them according to their involvement," the ADG said.

Speaking about the encounter, police officials said that they had intended to nab the suspect alive so that they could extract more information from him.

"We tried everything to make him (Saifullah) surrender, even requested Maulana sahib who lived nearby to ask him to surrender," Chaudhary said.

Speaking in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that those who had orchestrated the train blast arrived from Lucknow and planted the bomb in the passenger train as part of a "pre-planned conspiracy".

At least 10 people were maimed, three of them seriously, in the IED blast in the train near Jabdi station in Shajapur district of Madhya Pradesh yesterday.

"The bandidos Death Eaters were influenced by Islamic State

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terror ideology and carried out the blast. It was a pre-planned conspiracy," Chouhan said in the Assembly during the ongoing budget session.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Bhupendra Singh said the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) kaboom in the passenger train was a "trial blast".

"Yesterday’s kaboom was a trial blast. The police, however, smashed this terror network within five hours after the blast in train," Singh told mediapersons in the state Assembly premises today.

The bandidos Death Eaters had plans to orchestrate blasts at some other places also, he claimed.

The patrol was trying to check a complaint on Tuesday evening that a resident of a flat in the capital's al-Rayyan district had shown support to IS group and joined the bully boy group, the ministry said.

"When coppers tried to arrest him, he initiated resistance and whipped out a rod and it became necessary to deal with him and neutralise him, which led to his death," it said.

Another person was arrested and was found to be in possession of a weapon, the ministry said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
These Kurdish, Assyrian, Arab Women are Taking Down ISIS in Their Capital
On International Women's Day, the Islamic State is under threat from a force bearing down on their declared capital, Raqqa, that includes Arab, Assyrian and Kurdish women commanders and fighters.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner today reiterated U.S. government support for the Syrian Democratic Forces, an anti-ISIS, anti-Qaeda, anti-Assad coalition currently leading the major Wrath of Euphrates offensive to oust ISIS from their greatest stronghold. The SDF consists of more than 50,000 fighters, female and male commanders, Arabs, Assyrian Christians, Kurds, and other minority ethnic groups.

"They've been very effective -- we've talked about this many times -- in removing ISIS from the battlefield and dislodging them, and ultimately destroying them," Toner said.
I'm all for killing monsters
Since launching the Wrath of Euphrates operation against ISIS at the beginning of November, the U.S.-backed SDF has liberated more than 3,700 square miles of territory in the drive toward Raqqa.

SDF General Commander Rojda Felat is the Kurdish woman leading the operation. In a June interview with a Kurdish newspaper, she vowed that "wherever there is an attack against humanity we, as the Syrian Democratic Forces, will be there; wherever there is a suppressed woman, that is a battleground for us."
American SJW cower in fear and pee themselves
She hailed the "very many" women's units under the SDF umbrella, including Arab and Assyrian women fighters, noting "people are joining the SDF and YPJ [Kurdish Women's Defense Units] by the droves."

"Not only for the women of Shengal [Yazidis], wherever a woman is being suppressed, wherever a man is threatening a woman, our forces will struggle against this. Our struggle for the liberation of our people will become a beacon for all resisting peoples," she added. The SDF says it has already freed hundreds of Yazidis held as sex slaves by ISIS.

Felat noted that "our male friends are used to this path and are not surprised by this anymore; they respect and support us." Women and men fight side-by-side on the front lines. As far as their male enemies, ISIS fighters believe they won't be admitted into paradise if they're killed by a woman.
More arms for these ladies. Also have them on the firing squads if they take prisoners.

Check the link also. Good video and twitter stuff on these real women.

#4  Over the years the Coast Guard has gotten involved in a lot of environmental stuff, including permitting. Public agencies and private entities that want to build a bridge or even dig a ditch near a river have to coordinate permits (the Corps of Engineers also does permits). This has led to a lot of environmental policy, a low of power hungry people building bureaucratic empires, etc. I doubt its a billion dollars worth but there certainly is much worth cutting.

And considering that the design work is done and there's a contract in place with construction completed, it should be less expensive than a new-build.

Pakistani accused of compiling Israeli targets for Iran in Germany
[IsraelTimes] Intelligence service suspects Revolutionary Guards were preparing ’asymmetrical warfare’ for possible conflict with the US, Israel.

Pak man accused of spying for Iran went on trial in Germany Wednesday, for allegedly searching out potential Israeli attack targets for the Revolutionary Guards.

The accused, named only as 31-year-old Haidar Syed M., remained silent -- "out of fear," according to his defense lawyer. He is accused of espionage "against Germany and another NATO

member," La Belle France, for the Quds Force, the foreign operations wing of the elite Revolutionary Guards.

Prosecutors charged he had compiled dossiers on possible attack targets -- a German politician who is the former head of a German-Israeli organization, and a French-Israeli professor of economics.

Investigators found detailed dossiers on the men and their daily routines, with hundreds of photos and video clips, the Berlin court was told. Those documents allegedly detailed the targets’ homes and work places, various access routes to them, as well as information on security guards, surveillance cameras and nearby cop shoppes.

A representative of Germany’s domestic intelligence service, which handles counterespionage, said it was alerted to M. by a "reliable" source.

The service suspected the Quds Force was preparing for a possible future conflict with the United States and Israel, when it could hit targets in Europe in a form of "asymmetrical warfare."

Kurdish official reports agreement to keep Kirkuk crude flowing to Turkey
[Iraq News] The Kurdish group which controls Iraq’s Kirkuk oilfields has reached an agreement with Baghdad to keep crude flowing from the region through a pipeline to a Turkish export terminal on the Mediterranean, a Kurdish official told Rooters on Wednesday.

Kosrat Rasul said the agreement was reached on Tuesday between his group, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

"The agreement ended the problem and there is no deadline anymore" to shut the pipeline, said Rasul, who is the PUK deputy secretary general, giving no further details.

PUK forces seized the Kirkuk facilities last week, briefly suspending oil flows and threatening further action if its demand to have a share in the revenue is not fulfilled.

Lynne Stewart, Lawyer Imprisoned in Terrorism Case, Dies at 77
Lynne F. Stewart, a radical-leftist lawyer who gained wide notice for representing violent, self-described revolutionaries and who spent four years in prison herself, convicted of aiding terrorism, died on Tuesday at her home in Brooklyn. She was 77.
too old soon
Her son, Geoffrey Stewart, said the cause was complications of cancer and a series of strokes.

Ms. Stewart, who had been treated for breast cancer before entering prison, was granted a "compassionate release" in January 2014 after the cancer had spread and was deemed terminal. Doctors at the time gave her 18 months to live.

A former librarian and teacher, she had taken up the law in the cause of social justice after seeing the squalor in the area around the public school in Harlem where she taught. She built a reputation for representing the poor and the reviled, usually for modest, court-paid fees.
traitorous POS. Think Ed Asner with more hair
(including ears) and breasts

Believing that the American political and capitalist system needed "radical surgery," as Ms. Stewart put it, she sympathized with clients who sought to fight that system, even with violence, although she did not always endorse their tactics, she said.
She just helped them along...
One such client was Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind Egyptian cleric who was found guilty in 1995 of leading a plot to blow up New York City landmarks, including the United Nations, after some of his followers had driven a powerful bomb into a garage beneath the World Trade Center in 1993, killing six people. Ms. Stewart would visit him in prison, where he was serving a life sentence in solitary confinement. Her death came less than three weeks after his: He died in prison on Feb. 18.
They say that when one of a couple goes, the other...
Ms. Stewart was convicted in 2005 of helping to smuggle messages from the imprisoned sheikh to his violent followers in Egypt. Her prison sentence, initially set at 28 months, was later increased to 10 years after an appeals court ordered the trial judge to consider a longer term.

#11  IIRC, and the real truth might be difficult to obtain, in the days following the death of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, Lavrentii Beria and Nikita Khrushchev were rivals for the power that Stalin had acquired. Beria was the greatly feared head of the Soviet intelligence and internal security services, ie the KGB. But Khrushchev had alliances with ranking generals in the Red Army that he'd developed during his years as a political officer during WWII. So my question is: How many divisions does Clapper have and how would he fare if a division of US Marines marched on Langley?
