A tiny detail from North Korea's military parade may show how close they are to long-range nukes
A close review of photos from North Korea's recent military parade revealed that the Kim regime may be closer to building a functional nuclear missile that can threaten the US mainland than previously thought.

While some experts doubt that all the missile launcher tubes driving around Pyongyang really held missiles, or really posed a much of a threat, Michael Duitsman, a research associate at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies warned of a small but troubling detail on one of the missiles.

Duitsman told Business Insider in a phone interview that this may be wound filament reinforced plastic, a very light alternative to metal that can withstand the incredible pressure of rocket motors. Tal Inbar, head of the space research center at the Fisher Institute for Air & Space strategic studies, first pointed this out.

"Part of the parade is them showing us what they’re working on," said Duitsman. "Not stuff that’s operational, but stuff they’re actively working on. They’re showing us their intentions."

Duitsman said that wound filament reinforced plastic has up to ten times the strength to density ratio of aluminum, and could greatly reduce the weight of a missile.

"The lighter the stage is," said Duitsman, referring to the booster portion of the missile as a stage, "the less propellant you need, and the more you can put on top of it." In this case, the lighter missile could be used to carry a nuclear warhead.

While it seems like a small detail, Duitsman said that the Soviets and the US made similar breakthroughs when creating their ICBMs. Ultimately, if the North Koreans have advanced to composite materials and plastics in this part of their missile design, it means they're further along in their program than many experts suspected.

Though the North Koreans would still face problems in how to launch the missile and how to steer it, Duitsman said they could begin testing an ICBM that could reach Washington in as little as two or three years.
Did they factor in that the Norks have been working with Iran on this, and that all Iran's energies are focused on getting this to work before they break out with a miniaturized nuclear warhead and pop it on a known-working ICBM technology?

Trump administration's stance on marijuana use clouded in mystery
As people across the country observe today’s unofficial holiday celebrating marijuana, aka "420," it is the first time they are doing so under the Trump administration.

President Trump himself hasn't spoken extensively about weed or the legalization debate, though suggesting he favored medical marijuana use when asked about it once on the campaign trail.

"I think that as far as drug legalization, we talk about marijuana, and in terms of medical, I think I am basically for that. I've heard some wonderful things in terms of medical," he said at an MSNBC town hall event in Wisconsin in March 2016.

Sam Kamin, a law professor specializing in marijuana law policy at the University of Denver, said the administration has "largely used rhetoric" in its approach to marijuana policy so far.

While the administration hasn’t changed any law or law enforcement policies thus far, the signals are "enough to give the industry pause," he noted.

"No one knows exactly what, if anything, they will do next," Kamin told ABC News. "They might begin enforcing federal law against marijuana businesses or they might alter the current enforcement memos to indicate where their priorities lie. They can’t force the states to recriminalize marijuana or to enforce the federal prohibition.

"But they can make things very unpleasant even for those who are attempting to comply with state laws regulating their conduct," he said.

Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia have decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, according to the National Conference of State Legislators. But pot use remains federally illegal, so the Trump administration could crack down at any time because state can’t override federal law.

While Trump appears to be open to hearing arguments from various sides of the discussion when it comes to legalization, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been a longstanding critic of the drug.
To me, the guy seems like he's a redux of a voice speaking against alcohol from the prohibition era, trying to foist his ignorantly fearful opinion on the majority. Same arguments, slightly different subject. Of course, I'm not the kind who gets addicted to stuff. Except for RB . . . .
At a Senate hearing last April, Sessions said "good people don't smoke marijuana" and it is "not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized."

Such comments and other remarks Sessions has made on the issue prompted marijuana legalization advocates to protest his confirmation hearing, and later hand out free joints in parts of Washington, D.C., on the morning of the inauguration in protest.

Sessions talked more recently about his views at the National Association of Attorneys General winter meeting in February, when he said that he's "dubious" about marijuana.

"I’m not sure we’re going to be a better, healthier nation if we have marijuana sold at every corner grocery store," he said, though noting that "states can pass whatever laws they choose."

One counter-voice that's coming from within Trump's inner circle but outside the administration is that of Roger Stone, the longtime Republican political consultant and friend of Trump's.

He is pushing against Sessions' perceived stance on Twitter this morning, posting a tweet that reads, "The people have spoken @realDonaldTrump. Don't let Jeff Sessions' draconian views on 420 run roughshod over states," with a link to an article that includes CBS News poll results that find 61 percent of Americans want marijuana to be legalized.

Stone, who is open about both his marijuana use and admiration for his former boss President Richard Nixon, this morning shared a photo on Twitter of a bong in the shape of Nixon with the caption "Happy 420! #NixonBong."

Kamin said the "billion-dollar question" is how much Trump will listen and might be affected by the views of Sessions and others.

"It’s pretty clear that going after the regulated marijuana industry is not high on Trump’s to-do list," Kamin added. "But it does seem to be a real concern of Mr. Sessions’. How much free rein the AG gets is a question that only a very small handful of people know."

#1  Marijuana is not heroin and not cocaine. While I do not think there are a myriad of pluses I do not think there is overwhelming evidence of the negatives (the most prevalent seeming to be impaired memory and general amotivational behavior). In the larger sense, much like alcohol, I think the citizens would benefit from building their own private determination of the pros and cons of its use rather than being impelled by the state. Most I think if left to their own devices probably would not imbibe since it will, under legalization, probably attain the same social standing as smoking or alcoholic inebriation eventually. Also there probably is some uncertainty with the respiratory risk of smoking marijuana as well as other health concerns including long-term mental effects.

#2  other health concerns including long-term mental effects.

I've read about an increase in paranoid schizophrenia in the susceptible, Unclassifiable. And as we are already seeing a problem with such people suddenly shouting "Allahu akhbar!" and attacking those in the vicinity, I'm not sure we want to drive the creation of even more.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Bill O'Reilly: Conservative News Outlets Likely to Pounce Post-Fox News Ouster
Bill O’Reilly was on his way to the airport in Rome on Wednesday when he found out Fox News had decided to let him go. The details of his departure have yet to be worked out, and he was not yet thinking about his life after Fox.
Golly. The way I read this, it sounds like Fox didn't talk to Bill about what was best for their common future as much as they announced that they had.
But when he turns his attention to his future, he will have no shortage of options. Though his sexual harassment settlements may pose an obstacle, O’Reilly’s loyal fanbase presents a major opportunity to conservative networks looking to grow their audiences.
Or to shrink their audience due to the lack of it . . . .
"Our management here is obviously discussing it," said Charles Herring, president of One America News Network, a conservative cable channel that reaches 35 million households. "Clearly he’s built one heck of a brand. Clearly there’s been accusations that need to be looked at also."
Some very suspicious accusations. Starting with the gal who seemed more like a nun than someone you could expect him to go after, and ending with this last piece of work who made no sense at all. Except perhaps as a planted opportunity to push him out the door.
Christopher Ruddy, CEO of Newsmax, said he would be "very open to talking" with O’Reilly about joining the network, which reaches 10 million homes via cable and broadcast.

"I think some of the allegations made against him were serious, but he’s never been convicted in my mind of anything," Ruddy says. "I think he still remains a very hot property in the media word."
If you're a conservative, yes.
Either option would be a step down from Fox, which reaches 100 million households and paid O’Reilly $20 million a year. But Ruddy argues that the "fraying" of Fox News has created an opportunity for other conservative outlets.
Funny how Murdock's kids haven't figured that what that translates to for Fox yet.
"I think there’s a lot of players willing to invest," he says.

O’Reilly, 67, also has enough of a profile that he could strike out on his own. After parting ways with Fox in 2011, Glenn Beck launched a TV and radio show on the Blaze, his multi-media platform. The Blaze has reportedly reached as many as 300,000 paying subscribers and is available in 13 million cable households.
I doubt it.
"I think it’s harder than it looks," cautions Scott Baker, the site’s former editor-in-chief. "Obviously O’Reilly is in a position to do better at that than nearly anyone. But we’re talking about people at different life stages. The question will be how much does he want it."
If he gets away from NY's tax brackets, probably plenty.
"My guess is he loves that idea of being America’s anchorman," Baker says. "Revenge is a powerful motivator. But having to build something from the ground up, it puts you in your place a little bit."
And if he gets on a network he can place himself opposite Fox's big money maker and hit them even harder. And Murdock's kids can eat their alleged "values" for sustenance whenever they get hungry.
A less strenuous option would be to launch a podcast, which he could do from his own house for minimal cost. Nancy Grace, who left HLN last year, now does a daily Crime Stories podcast.
I never did like this angry . . . thing.
O’Reilly already has a "premium membership" plan on his website. Subscribers pay $4.95 per month for access to a newsletter, a message board, and the "O’Reilly Factor" archives. The site is rumored to have at least 20,000 paying subscribers, bringing in more than $1 million a year.

O’Reilly could launch a daily podcast or streaming show and substantially grow the premium subscriber base.

With relatively little effort, he could replace much of his lost earnings from Fox.

#1  We are probably not that far from one or more 'conservative' internet news channels.

Cable is dying and a large numbers of people (like me) never watch broadcast TV.

IMO no big names are needed. Just a decent product. And a simple innovation of a menu of news items, rather the legacy format of a single stream.

Three dead in armed attack at Russian intelligence agency
Russia's FSB intelligence agency says three people were killed ‐ including the attacker ‐ and one wounded in an armed attack at its office in the Far East.

The FSB, the main successor to the KGB, said in a statement on Friday that an unidentified man passed by metal detectors, entered the reception area of the FSB's office in Khabarovsk and opened fire at the people who were there. One FSB officer and one visitor were killed on spot and one was wounded. Security shot dead the attacker.

The FSB would not immediately release any details about the shooter.

Social media users posted pictures of police cordons around the FSB building in Khabarovsk with special forces standing by.

Justice Dept. debating charges against WikiLeaks members in revelations of diplomatic, CIA materials
[WAPO] Federal prosecutors are weighing whether to bring criminal charges against members of the WikiLeaks organization, taking a second look at a 2010 leak of diplomatic cables and military documents and investigating whether the group bears criminal responsibility for the more recent revelation of sensitive CIA cyber-tools, according to people familiar with the case.

The Justice Department under President Barack Obama had decided not to charge WikiLeaks for revealing some of the government’s most sensitive secrets — concluding that doing so would be akin to prosecuting a news organization for publishing classified information. Justice Department leadership under President Trump, though, has indicated to prosecutors that it is open to taking another look at the case, which the Obama administration did not formally close.

#2  If we're at war with someone, we ought to feel it. These kinds of tools just allow the government to obscure the fact. China has back-doors in a lot of its routing hardware. How does everyone feel about this? No comment from the government.

The ones who need to be nailed to a cross are the clowns who set up "security" for the CIA's crown jewels and the clowns who decided to have everything in one place.

Next go after whomever stole and leaked the secrets.

And I think a couple of phone calls to Assange letting him know that we know where his family lives would have stopped him in his tracks.

Interesting chap, that Ezra Cohen-Watnick
[Newsweek] The well-manicured Washington, D.C., suburb of Chevy Chase, Maryland, is probably what President Donald Trump’s supporters imagine when they whoop about draining the capital’s "swamp." A high-income enclave of Volvo-driving, wine-sipping, NPR-listening lawyers, lobbyists, journalists and government bureaucrats, Chevy Chase is such a liberal stronghold that local Republicans said last year they were afraid to plant Trump campaign posters on their lawns.

All of which makes the town an unlikely launch pad for Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the suddenly prominent White House National Security Council official at the center of a bizarre backdoor maneuver to provide House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes with top-secret documents on government surveillance. Cohen-Watnick reportedly retrieved the documents from a classified CIA terminal in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House and gave them to Nunes, a California Republican who had been a member of Trump’s transition team. They were intended to prove that former President Barack Obama was "wire tapping" Trump during the 2016 campaign.

The documents did no such thing, other members of the panel concluded after studying them. What they actually showed is that U.S. intelligence agencies did have Trump’s associates on their radar--but only because they were tracking Russian agents.

More on ECW found here from the Guardian.

Europe
The French, Coming Apart
BLUF: [City Journal] A process that Guilluy calls métropolisation has cut French society in two. In 16 dynamic urban areas (Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Toulouse, Lille, Bordeaux, Nice, Nantes, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Rennes, Rouen, Toulon, Douai-Lens, and Montpellier), the world’s resources have proved a profitable complement to those found in France. These urban areas are home to all the country’s educational and financial institutions, as well as almost all its corporations and the many well-paying jobs that go with them. Here, too, are the individuals--the entrepreneurs and engineers and CEOs, the fashion designers and models, the film directors and chefs and other "symbolic analysts," as Robert Reich once called them--who shape the country’s tastes, form its opinions, and renew its prestige. Cheap labor, tariff-free consumer goods, and new markets of billions of people have made globalization a windfall for such prosperous places. But globalization has had no such galvanizing effect on the rest of France.

Cities that were lively for hundreds of years--Tarbes, Agen, Albi, Béziers--are now, to use Guilluy’s word, "desertified," haunted by the empty storefronts and blighted downtowns that Rust Belt Americans know well.

Roger Simon: Is O'Reilly's Firing Really About Trump?
BLUF: [PJ] The real target in the defenestration of Bill was not O'Reilly himself but very obviously Donald Trump. He's the Big Kahuna the obscenely named "Resistance" (hey, you idiots, that was about Auschwitz, not tax reform) is after and Bill was only a stop along the way.

Indeed, several of Bill's accusers, represented by the daughter of Gloria Allred, appear to be people who find Trump particularly loathsome.

And the original story was broken by the New York Times, the literary capital of the "Resistance."

Injun Liz's Ugly Stew
[American Thinker] Senator Elizabeth Warren denounced President Trump's election as the product of an 'ugly stew of racism' that propelled him to the top.

So given that she considers herself a Native American minority and has sought affirmative action privileges with that so-claimed designation, what she's saying is that a vote against her or her party could only have been due to racism, never a popular rejection of her socialist ideas.

Logic of that sort is why Instapundit's Glenn Reynolds can often say: 'Want More Trump? That's how you get More Trump.'

Warren;s contempt for America's votes couldn't be more obvious. If it was an ugly stew of racism that got Trump elected, is it not a little patronizing that Warrren also could say, in an interview with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow:
"People are right to be angry, but Donald Trump said it’s their fault--those other people. Those people who don’t worship like you, those people who don’t look like you, those people who aren’t the same color as you."

So all those Trump-voting racists are right to be angry, is that it? Since when does one justify a racist's right to be angry? Only when one is a Democrat who still hasn't gotten over Hillary Clinton's loss, and needs a few insults to hurl at the people who kept her party out of power.

I must have missed that part.

I do recall the part about how we don't murder and commit violence like certain groups do. Especially the groups that ought to be on their best behavior since they have no right to be here in the first place.

But maybe "right to be here" is the unspoken issue.

Rush Limbaugh: O'Reilly Departure Was Not ‘Natural' ‐ It was a ‘Campaign'
BLUF: [Breitbart] [Sons of Fox News owner Rupert Murdock] One of their wives works for the Clinton Global Initiative. One of the wives when this New York Times story, ’You can’t keep the man on the air you just can’t this is embarrassing. It’s embarrassing to us, it’s embarrassing to dad company. You can’t do this.’ And the fact that the story ran on The New York Times was such a profound shock, sadness, and embarrassment that they felt that had to do something. That is why the fact that is started on The New York Times is crucial. There is two reason it is important. The Times is not just appearing out of nothing out of the ether.

Here’s the timeline, story New York Times. How long did it take before you started hearing about massive advertiser defections, just a day, right? You think that was natural? No, this was a campaign, folks. That’s why this is so frustrating to me, even after all this time, these campaigns are not immediately spotted for what they are. Therefore, people are not able to deal with them. And this one should have been expected given what’s been going on the last two years there. Tey should have been ready for this. But see the bottom line is they were.

Fox is not going to be the way it is for long. There is a massive ‐shakeup coming, and it is generational. It is generational and political. It is like anything else, nothing ever is constantly the same, there is change everywhere. But it has been amazingly easy to sit from a distance and watch this, it’s amazing how easy it appears, at least to me, that this massive and rapid transformation is occurring.
Emphasis added.

Couple that with renewed importation of massive immigrants primed to socialist entitlements and the doom of the Republic as we descend into another Workers Paradise continues. Illegal immigrants storm town hall in Paris suburb, 14 reported injured
[RT] Police deployed tear gas against crowds of illegal immigrants colonists who attempted to storm a town hall in a Gay Paree suburb, demanding a meeting with local authorities over the rights of foreigners, French media said. At least 14 migrants colonists were reportedly injured during the scuffles.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning in the Alfortville commune in the Gay Paree suburbs, some 4km from the French capital.

Crowds of undocumented migrants colonists from several communes, including the neighboring Vitry, Montreuil, and Courbevoie, headed to the town hall, Le Gay Pareeien reported.

The protesters apparently wanted to speak with local authorities and discuss the rights of foreigners. According to local newspaper 94.Cityoens, at least 200 people turned out for the protest.

Town hall staff told Le Gay Pareeien that they hadn’t noticed the demonstrators’ arrival until it was "too late."

The protesters blocked access to the building by forming a human chain. Police officers who arrived at the scene deployed tear gas against the migrants colonists.

Russian Naval Infantry officer dies in Syria
MOSCOW: A Russian marine major has been killed in combat in Syria, Russian news agencies reported on Thursday, confirming an earlier report that one of Moscow’s highest-ranking officers there had lost his life.

Major Sergei Bordov was killed during an attack by militants on a garrison, they said, quoting the Russian defense ministry. The reports gave no further details.

Earlier on Thursday, Reuters reported Bordov’s death, citing a former marine who had served with him and a person close to the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Russian forces are backing Syrian President Bashar Assad in his war with rebels and militants seeking to oust him.

“They were caught in shell fire. Two of our Russian servicemen and two Syrian soldiers died,” Vyacheslav Pavlyuchenko, who has served with Bordov, told Reuters.

He said the shelling incident occurred on Tuesday and that he did not know the names of the other fallen soldiers.

Bordov is one of the highest-ranking Russian officers to be killed in Syria. Pavlyuchenko said Bordov commanded a reconnaissance company two years ago but he did not know the major’s current role in the Syria operation.

Bordov’s body was expected to be delivered to his military unit in the Crimean town of Sebastopol on Friday and his burial should take place in his hometown of Simferopol on Saturday, Pavlyuchenko and the source close to the fleet said.

The defense ministry says about 30 Russian servicemen have been killed since the start of the Kremlin’s operation there in September 2015.
Evidence collected by Reuters points to losses among Russian servicemen and private military contractors in Syria three to four times higher than some official estimates, although the defense ministry has denied understating the death toll. (Reporting by Maria Tsvetkova and Anton Zverev)

South Korea to send anti-piracy forces to Somalia
Is it their turn?
[SHABELLENEWS] According to the Yonhap news agency, the one-day drill will involve the 4,500-tonne destroyer Daejoyoung, a 17,000-tonne commercial vessel and 350 sailors.

In May, the Daejoyoung is expected to join the South Korean naval group in the Gulf of Aden deployed there since 2009 as part of global anti-piracy fight off the Somalian coast.

Somalia has been plagued by civil war since 1991. Years of lawlessness and corruption have provided pirates with ample opportunities to hijack international ships for ransom with relative impunity.

In 2008, the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, along with a number of non-EU members states, launched the anti-piracy operation "Atalanta." The ships of the participating countries have been patrolling shipping routes off the shores of the Horn of Africa since December 2008.

In November, the Council of the European Union extended the mandate of the operation until December 2018.

New Iraqi offensive in Anbar begins

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army’s Jazeera Operations Command has declared launching a military operation to liberate and comb some regions in the north of Haditha Dam lake, western Anbar.

“Security troops as well as the tribesmen, backed by the U.S.-led coalition, launched military operation to free some regions in the north Haditha Dam lake, 160 KM west of Ramadi city,” Lt. Gen. Qassem Mohammedi, head of the command, told Al Sumaria News on Thursday.

“The troops killed dozens of extremists and blew up several booby-trapped vehicles belonging to the Islamic State,” he added.

The regions in the north of the lake are desert ones with a number of houses that are used by IS militants as hideouts.

Haditha city is fully controlled by security forces and tribal fighters, however, IS launches attacks there every now and then.

Earlier this week, additional U.S. forces reportedly arrived to a military base in Iraq’s Anbar province to take part in the security campaign against IS militants.

In March, reports indicated possible joint operations by the Iraqi and U.S. forces to clear IS-held towns of Annah, Rawa and Qaim near the borders with Syria . In the same month, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command denied news on arrival of 2000 U.S. Marine soldiers in Anbar to engage in the campaign.

In January, the province’s military command launched a brief assault that managed to recapture some western villages before stopping again. Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition have also regularly pounded IS locations in the province.

Three sisters kill man booked for blasphemy in Sialkot
[DAWN] SIALKOT: Three armed burqa-clad sisters on Wednesday rubbed out a man near Sialkot after accusing him of committing blasphemy 13 years ago.

Police managed to arrest the three suspects and identified them as Amna, Afshan and Razia.

The incident took place in Nangal Mirza village, Pasrur tehsil.

According to the police, the three women went to the house of Mazhar Hussain Syed, a faith healer, and asked him to pray for them. They also asked him if his son, Fazal Abbas, had returned from abroad. When told that he had returned from Belgium, they asked if they could see him. As soon as Abbas, 45, appeared before the women, they opened fire on him with the weapons they had brought with them secretly. Abbas was struck down in his prime.

The women raised slogans in jubilation after his death, asserting that they had finally eliminated a blasphemer.

The women, in their statement to police, alleged that Abbas had committed blasphemy in 2004, but "we couldn’t kill him at the time because we were too young then".

The police confirmed that they had started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Abbas in 2004 under Section 295-C (use of derogatory remarks, etc., in respect of the Holy Prophet) of the Pakistain Penal Code at the Pasrur City station, but he fled abroad soon after.

The suspect had recently returned from abroad and promptly obtained pre-arrest bail from a local court.

One policeman killed, civilian injured in IED blast in Egypt's North Sinai
[AlAhram] One Egyptian policeman was killed and a civilian injured in an IED blast that hit an armoured vehicle in Egypt's North Sinai city of El-Arish, state news agency MENA reported on Thursday.

Egypt's security forces have been battling a decade-long Lion of Islam Islamist insurgency on the Sinai Peninsula, which intensified following the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013.

The insurgency has been mainly concentrated in North Sinai 's Rafah, El-Arish, and Sheikh Zuweid.

Egypt's Prime Minister Sherif Ismail ordered on Wednesday the extension of a years-long state of emergency in designated areas of North Sinai at least until the end of the three-month state of emergency imposed nationwide last week.

The extension of the ongoing state of emergency in North Sinai, which has been renewed every three months since 2014, will impose new overnight curfews in some areas of the governorate.

The curfew will be in effect from 1am to 5am in El-Arish, and 7pm to 6am in the areas of El-Ouga, Halal Mountain, the coastal region and Rafah.

Army forces have been deployed to aid police in protecting vital institutions as part of the nationwide state of emergency.

On 11 April, the Egyptian parliament approved a nationwide three-month state of emergency, declared by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi two days after two jacket wallahs attacked St. George's Cathedral in Tanta and St Mark's Cathedral in Alexandria.

The Alternative for Germany Party’s (AfD) convention is scheduled to take place this weekend at Cologne’s Maritim Hotel, but it is unlikely to go as smoothly as expected, causing more trouble to the far-right party already plagued by internal discords and shrinking popular support.

More than 4,000 coppers will be dispatched to ensure security in the city, a figure reminiscent to security measures during high-level international political events. Additionally, German authorities have imposed a four-day no-fly zone that will last from Thursday until Monday. All aircraft, including helicopters and drones, will be banned from flying over Cologne’s inner city, the police said.

The only exception will be made for German military and police flights as well as for any rescue or emergency aircraft.

Notably, a police front man failed to remember the last time a no-flight zone was imposed over the city, Die Welt reported.

The extraordinary security measures come as the city expects some 50,000 protesters to counter the AfD conference with organizers calling for "civil disobedience". The activists, according to their campaign website, intend to "block" AfD members from entering the hotel by sitting and standing in their way.

Violent scenes erupt on streets as Venezuelans stage massive anti-Maduro march
[RT] Violent scenes have erupted during demonstrations against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Photos and videos shared on social media appear to show show protesters and police clashing on the streets in Caracas, the country’s capital.

Huge crowds gathered in cities across the country following weeks of violent demonstrations that have left a total of eight people dead and inflamed tensions between anti-government activists and security forces.

Riot police fired tear gas at protesters on the western side of Caracas, according to AFP.

In the midst of the violent street protests, opposition politician Henrique Capriles has called on the people of Venezuela "to defend the constitution."

In a message to supporters Tuesday, Capriles said President Maduro was intent on "dividing and sinking Venezuela." He urged people from all sides of Venezuelan society to "unite" against his rival’s regime.

Only 5 West Virginians contributed to Joe Manchin, according to campaign filing
[FREEBEACON] West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D.) has collected over $550,000 for his reelection campaign this year but only $7,900 of it came from donors inside the state, his latest campaign filing shows.

Manchin, whose Senate seat is up for grabs in 2018, reported just five donors with West Virginia addresses on his April quarterly report to the Federal Election Commission, which covers the period from January 1 through March 31.

The largest contributions came from what appears to be a single family in Glenville, West Virginia. Three executives for Waco Oil and Gas--I.L. Morris, Douglas Morris, and Ian Morris--combined to give $6,400 to Manchin on March 31.

Manchin received an additional $1,000 from an executive in Charleston, and $500 from a retired woman in Huntington.

Manchin raked in far more from donors out of his state, such as $95,600 from Texas and $32,300 from New York.

Dignity Operation cleric says Third Force fighters are ‘infidels’ and must be crucified
[Libya Observer] A notorious Dignity Operation holy man has labeled fighters of the Third Force, who are fighting the operation’s forces in Sabha, "unbelievers" who must be killed.

Abu Abdul-Rahman al-Makki, who is staying in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, said Dignity Operation fighters in Brak Shati airbase are "Mujahedeen" and those against them in Taminhint airbase are "Kharijites."

The Third Force is linked to the UN-installed Presidency Council and is made up of brigades from the city of Misrata.

"They say the Third Force, the Government of National Accord, we are Moslems... these are lies" he said in an audio recording from Mecca posted on social media on Monday.

He urged Dignity Operation forces to kill and crucify the "Kharijites" and show no mercy to them.

He also urged the people of south Libya to join Dignity Operation, reminding them of their ancestors’ battles against the Italian occupiers in 1911.

Several radical groups are fighting alongside Dignity Operation in Benghazi and Sabha.

Dignity Operation uses terms to brand opponents such as al-Qaeda, Moslem Brüderbund and Libyan Fighting Group in order to win local and international approval. According to Dignity Operation, all opponents are bully boyz and Kharijites.

#1  Kharijites opposed Ali who was the son-in-law to Mohammud. They developed the concept of declaring opponents subject to immediate extrajudicial execution because the opponents were, by being opponents, apostates or heretics.

Is Shamim Osman behind Hefazat’s case against Rafiur Rabbi?
[Dhaka Tribune] Narayanganj locals suspect cultural activist Rafiur Rabbi is being sued by a leader of radical Islamist group Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
at the behest of Awami League politician, Shamim Osman.

Shamim is a member of the influential Osman family blamed by Rabbi for the killing of his son, Tanvir Mohammad Twaki, in 2013.

Now the Hefazat unit chief for Narayanganj, Ferdaus-ur-Rahman, has accused Rabbi of hurting religious sentiment in a speech he made at an event on April 7.

Ferdaus alleges that Rabbi claimed none of the three million deaders would have participated in the 1971 Liberation War, "had they known the constitution would begin with ’Bismillah’ and the country would turn into a communal one".

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
Narayanganj Press Club President Mahbubur Rahman Masum said Rabbi did not make any anti-religious comments.

"The Osman family has mobilised Hefazat to take down those who demand justice for Twaki," he said.

Sanskritik Jote General Secretary Dheman Saha Jewel also said "a certain quarter" was trying to tarnish Rabbi’s image, while Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Hafizul Islam said those who promoted communalism were behind the case.

"The Narayanganj 4 MP could be behind this," Hafizul said, without elaborating.

Ferdaus, however, is insisting that nobody asked him to file the case, saying: "... We [Hefazat] have protested against anyone who made defamatory comments about religion."

Shamim has pledged to stage a rally in front of DIT Jame Mosque in Narayanganj Sadar after Jumma prayers on Friday, to protest those who made defamatory comments about "his religion".

"I want to set an example in Narayanganj by bringing everyone on to one platform to protest against those defaming religion. Every party should be a part of this protest ‐ Awami League, BNP, Jaitya Party, Hefazat," he said at a meeting with local religious scholars and leaders at Narayanganj City Corporation Central Mosque.

The Awami League politician also questioned why no one other than Ferdaus ‐ who was present at the April 7 meeting ‐ protested Rabbi’s audacity.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

1 dead in bomb attack on Shia area

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One person was killed, five others were injured as an IED, that targeted Shia pilgrimage, exploded on al-Resala al-Oula district in Baghdad, a security source said.

“A bomb planted near Shia pilgrims on al-Resala al-Oula district in al-Baiyaa region, south of Baghdad, exploded leaving one person killed and four others wounded,” the source told Al Ghad Press on Thursday.

“Security troops cordoned off the blast spot preventing approach of citizens in fear of other blasts,” the source said, adding that “the forces kept the pilgrims en route to Kadhimiyah neighborhood away from the place and guided them to alternative roads.

Troops, according to the source, are searching for other bombs that could have been placed by terrorists in the district.

Tight security measures are imposed to protect the pilgrims who commemorate the death anniversary of Imam Musa al-Kadhim, the seventh of 12 imams revered in Shia Islam.

Violence in the country, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), left 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March. Baghdad was the second most affected province with 84 deaths and 246 injuries, according to the organization’s monthly casualty count.

While several blasts are not followed by a claim of responsibility, Islamic State militants said they had been behind some bloody explosions and attacks that hit the capital in the past months, leaving casualties among civilians and security troops.

Islamic State is believed to have begun escalating attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.

The Zia generation
[DAWN] WHEN I insist before my students that they are part of the ’Zia generation’, some of them cringe. But it is true. Ours is a country in which the vast majority of the population -- there are approximately 120 million Paks under the age of 30 -- was born into a society that had been transformed by 11 years of brutal dictatorship.

Religion has been instrumentalised by all of Pakistain’s rulers -- even before the inception of the country. But the Zia years marked a politicisation of religion without precedent. The ’Zia generation’ grew up in a heavily ’Islamised’ world in which most progressive traditions were pushed completely to the margins of society.

When the events of 9/11 forced Pak officialdom to publicly renege on its long-term policy of patronising religiously inspired militancy, the societal contradictions to which this policy had given rise were laid bare. Hatred and (structural) violence is today commonplace. Mashal Khan’s brutal lynching at the hands of his fellow students was only the latest example of how pervasive Zia’s legacy is.

US approves $300mn sale of military equipment for Iraq’s Kurdish forces
A strong signal. But where will they get the money to pay for it?
[RT] The US has approved the sale of $295.6 million worth of military equipment for Kurdish Peshmerga artillery and infantry units in Iraq, a Pentagon agency has announced, adding that the sale is intended to support the country’s fight against Islamic State.

“The Government of Iraq has requested a possible sale of the equipment necessary to fully outfit two full Peshmerga Regional Brigades of light infantry, as well as the equipment necessary to outfit two artillery battalions that will ultimately provide support to those regional brigades,” the Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said in a Wednesday press release.

Saudi-led coalition ‘bombing hospitals, violating rights of children’ in Yemen
[RT] The Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
-led coalition in Yemen, backed by the UK, must be put on a UN violations list for repeated attacks on medical facilities and violating the rights of children, a new report says.

The report, by Save the Children and Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict, documents a series of deadly coalition-led attacks on hospitals and medics over the past two years.

In one case, two infants in incubators died from a lack of oxygen after a pediatric hospital in the capital Sanaa was damaged in a coalition Arclight airstrike.

More than 160 attacks have been carried out by parties to the conflict throughout Yemen, the report says, including the damaging of medical facilities through Arclight airstrikes, occupation and looting of hospitals, and extortion, detention and killing of medical staff.

The conflict has forced more than half of Yemen’s medical facilities out of action, leading to the "near collapse of the country’s already fragile healthcare system." The report says those that remain face severe shortages of medicine and equipment in the face of a maritime block imposed by the coalition.

"In the past two years, an increase in conflict and assassinations on medical facilities and personnel have led to more children directly injured, suffering and dying from preventable conditions, including acute malnutrition, acute respiratory infections and diarrheal disease."

Britannia has come under frequent criticism for continuing to supply arms to Saudi Arabia amid reports of repeated atrocities in Yemen. The UK has made more than £3 billion ($3.6 billion) from arms sales since the military campaign began in March 2015, which has seen 11,000 Yemeni civilians killed.

China-Japan-Koreas
North Korea: 'Super-mighty pre-emptive strike' will reduce US to ashes
[FOXNEWS] North Korean state media threatened to launch a "super-mighty pre-emptive strike" that would reduce South Korea and the United states "to ashes."
Sea of Fire is back!
The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper for North Korea's ruling Worker's Party, wrote, "In the case of our super-mighty pre-emptive strike being launched, it will completely and immediately wipe out not only U.S. imperialists' invasion forces in South Korea and its surrounding areas but the U.S. mainland and reduce them to ashes," according to Rooters. The rogue nation also claimed the U.S. and its allies "should not mess with us."

The threat came as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the U.S. was exploring ways to pressure North Korea to the negotiation table over its nuclear program.

"We're reviewing all the status of North Korea, both in terms of state sponsorship of terrorism as well as the other ways in which we can bring pressure on the regime in Pyongyang to re-engage with us," Tillerson said on Wednesday. "But re-engage with us on a different footing than past talks have been held."

The seretive regime also released a propaganda video over the weekend that showed a simulated nuclear missile attack destroying an unidentified American city. A cemetery and American flag appeared with flames superimposed over the footage.

Tensions continue to mount as Trump takes a harder stance against North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Last week, the president made comments to Fox Business that he was sending an "armada" to deter Pyongyang.

Syria said to move jets to base used by Russia, fearing US strikes
[IsraelTimes] Washington officials say tactical move an effort by Damascus to safeguard its remaining aircraft from American missiles.

Syria has reportedly placed the majority of its warplanes under Russian protection out of fears US will conduct additional Arclight airstrikes on its military installations.

US defense officials told media outlets on Thursday that nearly all of Syria’s operational fixed-wing aircraft were now stationed at Hmeimim Air Base, just south of the port city of Latakia.

Hmeimim is a Syrian airbase but has been exclusively operated by Russian forces since Moscow intervened in the bloody civil war to fight alongside Bashir al-Assad’s regime in mid-2015.

According to CNN, Russian forces have deployed anti-aircraft defense systems at Hmeimim as a protective measure.

US officials said the move was a likely effort to protect Syria’s remaining operational planes from a repeat of the April 7 US missile strike in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town that has been widely blamed on the Damascus regime.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis at the time said the US cruise missile strike destroyed over 20 Syrian warplanes, some 20 percent of the regime’s working aircraft.

Last week Mattis reiterated warnings that further chemical weapons use by Assad will be met with fresh US action. "If they use chemical weapons, they are going to pay a very, very stiff price," he said at the Pentagon last week.

On Wednesday, an Israeli defense official said Assad still possesses up to three tons of chemical weapons and said the US strike was not a turning point in the war "but rather another development in the fighting."

The official also said Israeli intelligence indicated Assad personally approved the chemical attack.

"It’s hard for me to believe that he didn’t know about it," the officer said.

Russia -- which along with Iran has deployed forces to help Assad in the six-year-old civil war -- reacted with fury to the US strike and has continued to cast doubt on the regime’s involvement in the chemical attack, to Washington’s disgust.

Though Washington had informed Russian forces in Syria of the retaliatory strike in advance to avoid casualties that could prompt a broader crisis, it has accused Moscow of waging a misinformation campaign surrounding the attack for defending Assad.

Earlier this week, Assad’s former chemical weapons research chief told Britannia’s The Telegraph newspaper that Syria had "at least 2,000 tons" of chemical weapons before the war and only declared 1,300. Former Brig. Gen. Zaher al-Sakat said the Syrian government still possessed hundreds of tons of chemical weapons

Egypt's army says it killed prominent Ansar Beit El-Maqdis leader in Sinai airstrikes
[AlAhram] Egypt's army said on Thursday it has killed a top leader in Sinai-based holy warrior group Ansar Beit El-Maqdis during Arclight airstrikes in Central and North Sinai.

In an official statement, army front man Tamer El-Refaie said the army's air forces conducted strikes in those governorates, killing 19 faceless myrmidons including one of the group's top leaders.

According to the statement, the leader was the head of the group's Sharia Committee and responsible for interrogations.
Oboy! A genuine Number 3!
The army has not publicly identified the leader, but said that 11 of those killed were members of the group's branches in Nile Delta governorates.

This is not the first time the army has announced the killing of a prominent leader in the group this month. Earlier in April, El-Refai said that group leader Salem Salma El-Hamdeen, known as Abu Anas El-Ansari, had died from injuries sustained in an Arclight airstrike on 18 March that killed 188 faceless myrmidons and injured several others.

According to the army, El-Ansari was one of the group's founders and among its most important leaders in North Sinai, involved in arming and training faceless myrmidons in the area. The holy warrior group's propaganda magazine El-Nabaa mourned the death of the 40-year-old leader through an obituary.

Most of the attacks against security personnel and installations in North Sinai in recent years have been claimed by Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State

4 militants killed, hideout eliminated in A-29 strike in South of Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least four Death Eaters were killed and their hideout was eliminated in an Arclight airstrike involving the newly-deployed A-29 Super Tucano aircraft in southern Uruzgan province of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the Death Eaters were targeted in the vicinity of Tarinkot city, the placid provincial capital of Uruzgan province.

A Dshk heavy machine gun as well as a hideout of the Death Eaters was also destroyed in the Arclight airstrike, the Ministry of Defense added.

The anti-government armed Death Eater groups including the Taliban snuffies have not commented regarding the report so far.

This comes as at least twenty snuffies were killed and a vehicle packed with explosives was destroyed in an Arclight airstrike conducted in this province nearly two weeks ago.

Houthis fingered for killing Yemeni army commanders
[Asharq Al-Awsat] Aden- Two senior commanders among the ranks of armed loyalists backing Yemen’s ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh were killed in an area near Sana’a on Wednesday.

Partaking in the insurgency aiming to overturn the internationally-backed government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, the commanders, one of whom is Saleh’s nephew, were killed in an ambush, local sources said.

In the ambush west of Sana’a near Al Mahwit governorate, armed Houthis attacked and killed the governorate’s security chief Major General Ali Saleh al-Ghani and Brigadier General Wadah al-Shahtari.

The ambush took place when Ghani and Shahtari were running a field inspection of pro-Saleh military encampments in Wadi al Manqb, the sources added.

Both Houthis and pro-Saleh loyalists have gone hand-in-glove in their attempts to reign over Yemen. Backed by Iran, Houthis overran Sana’a in 2014 and established a coup capital there, after driving out legitimate authorities. Ever since, dispute and conflict pitted Houthis and Saleh loyalists, particularly on issues and strategies on how militants would rule confiscated areas.

Pro-Saleh loyalists are increasingly being marginalized by Houthis, especially in administrative affairs, pro-Saleh militants said. The latest assassination comes to exacerbate tensions between coup factions, as Houthis dive a step deeper into unilateral decision making in Sana’a.

Observers expect the death of the two commanders to have sizable fallout on the already fragile alliance.

“Rising tensions will likely end in a series of assassinations that will further weaken the alliance,” Wissam Mohammad, a political analyst, said.

“After failing to gain recognition for their putschist authorities, coup militias now face a frustrating deadlock that manifests in augmented infighting,” Mohammad added.

“Even though the assassinations being at the very least provocative, the alliance will still be upheld for the time being—the coup’s chances at a political future are diminishing as pro-government forces advance on many fields, and for that reason they will sustain such a coalition despite increased aggressiveness against one another,” Mohammad told Asharq Al-Awsat.

For weeks on end Sana’a has been seeing a buildup in propaganda by both coup sides, with a wave of criticism targeting Houthis hitting social media platforms and media outlets. Most of the verbal reprehension was spurred by continued Houthi aggressions and failure to share power with their allies.

2 Kidz die in bomb attack in Ramadi

Anbar(IraqiNews.com) Two children were killed due to an bomb explosion in al-Bou’itha region, north of Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, a security source said on Thursday.

“A bomb placed on the side of the road in al-Bou’itha region, north of Ramadi,” the source told Al-Ghad Press. “The blast killed two children, who were there at the spot of the blast.”

In related news, another security source told Mawazin News that “two bombs planted under electricity pylons on the road linking between Hit and al-Baghdadi districts were defused without losses.”

Anbar’s western regions still host some IS strongholds that sustain occasional bombardments by Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets.

Violence in the country left 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

IS is believed to have begun escalating attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.

While losing Mosul could be the severest blow to the group’s existence in Iraq, some observers argue that attacks outside the province prove that the extremist group can still pose a security threat for all cities.

Mahdi Taqi, a member at the security committee at Salahuddin province, said three militants were killed and a fourth was attested, while an explosive device was neutralized in a “preemptive operation” by al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) in Kifri, a region on the borders with Diyala. He said the militants were killed while planting landmines targeting the forces.

Meanwhile, an official in Diyala said IS began to detonate civilian homes o prevent the return of refugees at the borders with Salahuddin.

Udai al-Kahdran, mayor of al-Khales (15 km north of Baqubah), said in a press statement that Islamic State members began, days earlier, to blow up civilian houses at Boujanaan, Boujomaa and Hathal al-Mutlak border villages. He said the action comes as part of IS attempts to prevent refugees’ repatriation and to blame the damage on Iraqi forces.

Khadran reiterated that the borders between Salahuddin and Diyala continue to pose a security challenge that requires military action to eliminate the group’s pockets at the abandoned villages.

The Iraqi government is expected to launch offensives at IS havens across Iraq once finished with its operation in Mosul, IS’s largest bastion in Iraq.

Villagers defied ISIS by smoking cigarettes

[FREEBEACON] Iraqis living under oppression from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
defied the barbaric terrorist group by smoking cigarettes.

To residents of Badoosh, a village in northern Iraq that was liberated just over a week ago, "smoking equals freedom."

New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
correspondent Rukmini Callimachi encountered many residents who said they would conceal their cigarette smoking from ISIS terrorists, which would cut off fingers for violating the group's smoking ban.

Callimachi shared on Twitter the story of a cow herder in Badoosh who is celebrating the freedom to smoke again since the village was liberated.

"Yesterday, my team made it to the furthest point I've gone northwest of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
to the locality of Badoosh, where we interviewed residents," Callimachi said. "I noticed that everywhere we went in Badoosh, residents were ’wearing' packs of cigarettes, like this gentleman. His name is Mohammed Ahmed Saleh, and he's a cow herder, and he asked my colleague to light his cigarette when we got out of the car."

"His village near Badoosh was liberated 10 days ago [and] he launched into a diatribe about IS [and] how happy he is to be able to smoke again," she said.

Callimachi said that although she is a "Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, girl through and through" who hates secondhand smoke, she said it was "obvious that smoking for this man [equals] freedom."

"That's when Mohammed began describing the lengths he took to find cigarettes under ISIS [and] the thrill it gave him to break their rules," she said.

The Iraqis were smoking Akhtamar Classics, which sport a logo similar to the Statue of Liberty. Callimachi reported that the Armenian cigarette brand cost 63 cents before ISIS spiked the cost to $17.

Houthis make lavish use of mines in Yemen
JEDDAH: Houthi militias and fighters of ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh continue to plant land and sea mines amid international silence. This is despite the fact that the use of such explosives is considered a crime against humanity, according to Yemeni government and military officials.

As a result, Yemen needs years to eliminate the mines because there are no maps to locate where they were planted. The Houthi militias planted mines in sensitive areas to stop the advance of government forces, especially after the southern governorates have been liberated.

Statistics show that hundreds of civilian victims fell victim to the explosives, killed or maimed, and the figure is increasing due to the spread of the war in urban areas.

Col. Haytham Haloub, chief of the Military Engineering Division in the Fourth Military Region and director of the National Mine Action Center in Aden, said that coup militias planted many mines in a haphazard manner, including the prohibited anti-personnel mines as well as homemade bombs and anti-tank mines.
He added that until last May, engineering teams defused more than 31,000 mines in Aden, Lahj, Abyan and some parts of the Taiz Governorate.

The Arab Federation for Human Rights, in its last report, said the Houthis planted mines at more than 500,000 locations in Yemen, which were responsible for 700 deaths. Engineers of the Arab coalition have dismantled 40,000 mines so far.

The Yemeni government has sought the international community’s help to defuse the mines planted in densely populated areas in the liberated areas.
The government said the mines are banned internationally; pose a threat to life and lead to losses of civilian lives, especially women and children. They are difficult to find because there are no maps with their position, it said.

The government has sought help from the international community because Yemen lacks the required equipment. Yemeni engineering teams, with the support of the Arab Coalition, extracted and dismantle several Iranian-made naval minefields of various sizes.

They were planted by the coup militias on the coasts of the Midi region, in the northwest of Yemen.

One such naval mine hit a boat on the Midi coast, leading to the deaths of eight fishermen. Col. Mohammed Salam Al-Asbahi, commander of the Naval Arrow operation, said the Yemeni Army began the process of combing and clearing the coasts and islands from mines planted by rebel militias.

Al-Asbahi said the locations of the mines were identified and marked to help fishermen avoid dangerous areas. He added that the engineering teams started the disposal process, dragging the mines to one of the unpopulated islands where they are detonated.

Omar Jawhar, brigadier general of the Fifth Military Region War in Midi, said the aim is to clear the Red Sea islands and coasts of Iranian mines.
In statements to the media, he said the process is not limited to sea mines only, but covers the wild coasts of Midi.

He added the mines lifted from the Red Sea came from Iran. The discovery corroborates testimony by Gen. Joseph Foteil, US commander of the American forces in the Middle East, to the US Congress Armed Forces Committee that Houthi rebels are strongly supported by Iran and threaten shipping in the Hormouz and strategic Bab Al-Mandab straits. He said: “Houthis, with Iran’s support, spread along the Hormouz rockets and radar systems, in addition to mines and explosive boats.”

He added that the Arab coalition forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle mines over sea routes to the western beaches of Yemen.

Europe
Freed to kill more police: Isis terrorist who shot dead policeman and wounded two others on the Champs-Elysees was jailed for 20 years for trying to kill officers - but released early
Day 2 of the latest jihad adventure. Day 1 can be reviewed here.
[DailyMail]
  • The killer is alleged to have used messaging app Telegram to talk about desire to attack police

  • ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, and a terror probe has opened

  • Killer has been named as Karim C, amid reports he had previously been jailed for shooting at police

  • One police officer was killed and two others were seriously injured Thursday evening
A killer who rubbed out one police officer and seriously injured two others in Gay Paree Thursday evening had previously been incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
for opening fire on law enforcers, and talked of his desire to kill police on social media.

The 39-year-old, named in reports as Karim C, and using the alias 'Abu Yousuf the Belgian' made dark threats on messaging app Telegram, it has been claimed.

He was convicted for a 2001 shooting which left two coppers seriously injured, according to reports, and was given a 20 year jail term.

French authorities have confirmed that the shooting close to the Champs Elysees was a 'targeted' attack, and prosecutors have opened a terrorism probe.

ISIS has grabbed credit for the attack, which was carried out with a Kalashnikov weapon. A passerby was also injured.

French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
has said he is convinced that the attack was 'terror related', and will hold a security cabinet meeting in the morning.

The gunman was rubbed out at the scene.

The French-born killer lived in Chelles, a commuter town close to Gay Paree in the Seine-et-Marne department.

In 2003 he was sentenced to 20 years inside a high security prison following the attacks in Roissy-en-Brie, also in Seine-et-Marne. But he was let out early following an appeal ruling, giving him the freedom to carry out tonight's attack.

Karim C was the registered keeper of the grey Audi used in tonight's attack. A raid on his home later found guns and ammunition, said intelligence sources.

He had targeted a parked patrol car full of traffic control officers working to the Gay Paree prefecture. The officer killed was at the wheel and was having an evening snack at the time ofhis death.

French television network BFMTV reports that he had used the Telegram internet messaging service, which bandidos snuffies have previously been claimed to favour because of its encryption.

Pierre-Henry Brandet, front man for La Belle France's Interior Ministry said 'all lines of investigation were being pursued', while intelligence sources said the dead assailant was a known radical on a so-called S-file, for 'State-security'. This means he would have been under surveillance, because he was a known risk to the country.
The Telegraph adds:
The gunman had recently been detained for questioning in a cop shoppe in Meaux, outside Gay Paree, after "informants" had indicated that he was "seeking to obtain weapons to kill coppers", according to reports.

But due to a lack of evidence, anti-terror prosecutors "let him go".

A police document obtained by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named identifies the address searched in the town of Chelles as the family home of Karim Cheurfi, a 39-year-old with a police record.

Police tape surrounded the quiet, middle-class neighborhood in Chelles early on Friday, and worried neighbors expressed surprise at the searches.

There were unconfirmed reports last night that an arrest warrant had been issued for a second suspect who had arrived in Gay Paree from Belgium.
Update at 11:35 a.m. EDT: Yesterday's Telegraph liveblog has continued updating, and is a much better source for efficiently learning the latest developments than the Daily Mail, though the latter ends up with more interesting details. The summary at 2:00 p.m. (Greenwich Time) is a good place to start.

Summary of the summary: ISIS literature was found at Mr. Cheurfi's mother's house in Chelles; three of his relatives have been taken in for questioning; there's a manhunt for his presumed associate, named as Youssouf El Osri, who is not the man they originally thought he was -- that man turned himself in to police earlier and was released; and, Marine Le Pen announced that she wants to close the borders and expel everyone on the terror watchlist immediately. May the rest of today be quieter around the world.

Haftar drops bombs on Derna's Al-Fatayeh district for fourth day
[Libya Observer] The district of al-Fatayeh in eastern Derna city - Libya's eastern region - woke up Thursday morning on out-loud sounds of bombing by Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
's fighter aircraft.

The aircraft targeted the district in eastern Derna causing material damage only.

According to eastern sources, today's air-attack has been the fourth this week.

MiG21 of Omar al-Mukhtar operations room of Dignity Operation bombarded the district bringing down a house and damaging others.

Today- April 20 - coincides with the first anniversary for the defeat of IS bandidos Lions of Islam by Derna Shura Council fighters and the liberation of Derna from the terrorist groups.

The city is celebrating the incident as a sign of pride in their city fighters and revolutionaries.

Omar al-Mukhtar operations room urged the residents to get out of their district in preparation for a military campaign they want launch, similar to that launched in Benghazi by Dignity Operation in May 2014.

10 IS suspects arrested
[Daily Excelsior] A major terror attack in the country was claimed to have been averted as 10 suspected ISIS activists were held today in a major multi-state operation.

The joint operation was carried out by the police teams of Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh, in which four suspected turbans belonging to the ISIS Khorasan module were incarcerated
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
and six others were detained, officials said.

The arrests were made during raids this morning in Mumbra (Maharashtra), Jalandhar (Punjab), Narkatiaganj (Bihar), and Bijnor and Muzaffarnagar (both in Uttar Pradesh), the officials added.

Inspector General of the UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) Aseem Arun, in a statement in Noida, said that four persons were arrested on charges of hatching terror conspiracies.

He said the accused were planning a major terror attack in the country.

Important documents relating to the ISIS were seized from them, Arun claimed.

He said two persons Mufti Faizan and Tanveer, allegedly connected with the ISIS, were arrested from Bijnor district.

Nazim Shamshad Ahmed (26), who hails from Bijnor, was nabbed from Mumbra township in Thane district adjoining Mumbai.

Another suspect identified as Muzammil was arrested from Jalandhar district of Punjab.

According to an UP ATS statement in Lucknow, six others were taken into custody and were being questioned in Noida, on the outskirts of Delhi.

The accused had got in touch with each other over the internet, Arun said, adding that Central security agencies played an important role in the operation.

According to the IG, the UP ATS had seized some important documents after the March 7 encounter in Lucknow in which a suspected terrorist belonging to the Khorasan module was killed. Following this, the probe was expanded to five States.

The ATS had received information that the ISIS had been expanding its network in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

and Bihar and some youths from these States had joined the terror organization.

"All those arrested are in the age group of 18 to 25 years and were living in different places like Mumbai, Jalandhar and UP. We have also found that they were definitely influenced by the material available on the internet," UP ADG (Law and Order) Daljit Chaudhary said in Lucknow.

Investigations show that one of them wanted to finance the group and they were continuously communicating with each other about carrying out some major strike in the near future. But police and other agencies of different States with the help of surveillance made the arrests before they could carry out any such attack, the ADG said.

A spokesperson of the UP ATS said those arrested were suspected to be looking for potential recruits in Bihar, UP and Maharashtra.

Jake Tapper: Press Was ‘Very Friendly’ to Obama, Many Drank ‘The Kool-Aid’
[FREEBEACON] CNN host Jake Tapper accused the mainstream media of being too friendly with former President Barack Obama
I mean, I do think at a certain point you've made enough money...
during his administration.

In a candid interview with GQ published Tuesday, Tapper acknowledged that after his tough interviews of administration figures like Kellyanne Conway, he picked up a following from many critics of President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
"It's nice to be recognized, but I also know that a lot of the people who are happy with me now are not going to be happy with me in four to eight years," he predicted.

Tapper said that he was just as tough on Obama, and earned his share of grief for it at the time.

"A lot of people sending me nice tweets today were cursing me when I was asking questions about Benghazi in 2012," he said.

"President B.O. was not friendly to the press, but the press was very friendly to President B.O.," Tapper told GQ. "I mean, President B.O. did not like me, and I understand why. I was a pain in his ass and I didn't drink the Kool-Aid, and, you know, a lot of other people did."

Tapper has made similar indictments before, saying that the mainstream media had a "cultural bias" that was more complicated that just liberal bias.

"I think there are a lot of hard-working news hounds in NYC and DC who have never fired a gun, or never worked a 9-5 manual labor job, or lived in the middle of the country, or worried about their next paycheck, or have anyone in their family who serves in the military," he said during a 2013 Reddit Ask Me Anything.

"Yes, I do think there is bias," he continued. "Reluctant to name names though because I try to be collegial."

India-Pakistan
Panama Papers verdict
[DAWN] IT had all the makings of a landmark judicial case: a serving prime minister and his family accused of corruption; the petitioners representing an array of political opposition; the hearings initiated by a chief justice of Pakistain, who intervened to prevent a potentially catastrophic political confrontation in Islamabad; and an evidentiary trail rooted in the explosive Panama Papers, which caused ripples across the globe. In the end, and in a split decision, the court has found that it does not have enough evidence to give the opposition what it wants, but it does have enough doubts to demand a joint investigation team probe Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
and his family. The verdict was immediately hailed by the government as a victory; and, perhaps half-heartedly, used by the PTI to demand yet again that the prime minister temporarily step aside. Both reactions were predictable.

In the hours after a lengthy judgement is delivered, a full examination of its contents is unlikely; the days ahead will yield more details and informed opinion, supportive and critical of the judgement. Yet, there is an anomaly that can be immediately identified and that perhaps the court has not thought through the implications of. The JIT itself is effectively a dead end. The record of JITs in other politically charged matters make it clear that no great surprises ought to be expected. But the inclusion of military-run intelligence agencies in a probe against a serving prime minister in matters of finance and the law is remarkable -- and a precedent that should not be established. It is not a question of who the prime minister is or civilians being above the law. There is absolutely no doubt that as prime minister, Mr Sharif must be held to a greater level of scrutiny than the average citizen. What is concerning about the composition of the JIT, especially with the inclusion of a Military Intelligence representative, is the signal it sends about the lack of institutional trust. Civilian matters should be probed, adjudicated and resolved in the civilian domain. And if the court has little faith in civilian institutions, as it indicated in its verdict, it could have put its trust in a judicial commission.

Afghanistan
Karzai Calls Daesh A ‘Tool’ Of The United States
[Tolo News] Former Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
...A product, probably the sole product, of the Southern Alliance...
on Wednesday said ISIS was a "tool" of the United States and that he does not differentiate between ISIS and America.

Karzai told VOA’s Afghan service: "After it (the U.S) dropped the bomb on Afghanistan, it did not eliminate ISIS."

"I consider ISIS their tool," he said.

"I do not differentiate at all between ISIS and America."

Karzai also dismissed criticism of Moscow's ties with the Taliban
...the Pashtun equiovalent of men...
"They (Russia) talk to the Taliban," Karzai said.

"The U.S. also talks to the Taliban. Norway, Germany and other countries also talk to them. Russia also has the right to hold talks with the Taliban."

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
he told VOA: "The Taliban is a major reality in today's Afghanistan. The Americans themselves say that they (Taliban) control 50 percent of the Afghan territory. When a force controls 50 percent, countries have no option but to talk to them. The U.S itself talks to them -- they meet them in their office in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
This comes after Karzai, on Saturday lashed out at government and the U.S over the bombing.
"Pay attention to meeeeee!"
He said he did not recognize the government, and had decided to work to get rid of America in Afghanistan and criticized government for "allowing the U.S to drop such a big non-nuclear bomb. If government approved it, the act is treason."

He said the bombing was an insult to Afghanistan and that the U.S was just using ISIS as an excuse.

Karzai also said it was a violation of Afghanistan's illusory sovereignty and a violation of the environment.

Gun attack damages Red Cross offices in Hebron, none hurt
*BANG BANG Bangetty-bang!*
[IsraelTimes] An unidentified group of gunnies on Wednesday night fired several bullets at the International Committee of the Red Thingy compound in the West Bank City of Hebron, a spokesperson for the international aid group said Thursday.

"Around 11 last night, several bullets were fired at our premises in the city of Hebron. No staff were there at the time as it was late at night," ICRC spokesperson Rima Kamal told The Times of Israel.

Bullets fired by the gunnies penetrated the compound and shattered the window of a ICRC vehicle parked outside.

Kamal said that so far there are no suspects or known motives, and that they are working with local police to catch the gunnies.

"It’s really destabilizing for the entire team. We’ve been here for 50 years. We have various programs in the country. Incidents like this really prevent us from carrying out the programs we do," she added.

Fourteen staff members work at the ICRC compound in Hebron and 358 work in the aid organization across Israel and the Paleostinian territories.

The attack comes as the ICRC has been caught in the middle of a hunger strike by some 1,500 Paleostinian inmates in Israeli prisons demanding more rights.

Among the demands is for the ICRC to return to its policy of facilitating two trips for family members to the prisoners per month.

Thursday is the fourth day of the hunger strike.

The ICRC reduced the coordinated visits to Israeli jails to once a month last May. The reason for the reduction, Kamal said, was to cut costs and raise efficiency as not enough family members were showing up to the second round of visits each month.

Self-manufactured weapons seized during check

Thursday evening, an IDF force seized three self-manufactured weapons inside a vehicle during a check in the Teenim crossing at the Menashe regional brigade. The driver was detained for questioning.

Three suspects taken into custody after attempting to throw a Molotov cocktail at Border Police base

[Ynet] Three suspects arrived at a Border Police base in the Etzion Brigade in the West Bank when a soldier noticed that one of the suspects had set fire to a Molotov cocktail and threw it on the floor, kicking it in the direction of the base.

When the report came in, a Border Police force and IDF soldiers managed to locate the suspects and bring them into custody, while another suspect was found to be in possession of additional Molotov cocktails.

Europe
Trial opens for 20 suspected of grenade attack on French Jewish store
In which the mills of justice grind slowly.
[IsraelTimes] Members of ’Cannes-Torcy’ jihadist terror cell, thought to have been behind 2012 bombing, face terror charges.

Twenty members of a suspected jihadist network thought to have been behind a grenade attack on a Jewish grocery store in 2012 went on trial in La Belle France Thursday on terror charges.

The "Cannes-Torcy cell," named for the towns where its members were based, is suspected of having planned several other attacks, and was considered the most dangerous to threaten the country when it was dismantled in 2012.

The trial opens as La Belle France is grappling with fresh fears of jihadist terror attacks, with the police arresting two men Tuesday suspected of plotting an assault just days before the presidential election -- the first to be held in La Belle France under a state of emergency.

Analysts say the Cannes-Torcy network signaled a historic shift in La Belle France’s struggle against terrorism, to battling mass attacks by Islamic Death Eaters inspired, or even guided, by foreigners.

Of the 20 men being tried by a special anti-terror tribunal in Gay Paree, 10 are in prison and seven are on conditional release,
Why?
while three others are being sought -- two of whom are thought to be in Syria.

Aged 23 to 33, they are accused of plotting to stage several attacks on military and civilian targets, and of seeking to join jihadist ranks in Syria.
Later they went to ISIS, but I've no idea who they were connected to back in 2012.
Police nabbed
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
two members of the network while investigating a grenade attack on a Jewish grocery in the Gay Paree suburb of Sarcelles
...known as "Little Jerusalem" because of the large number of North African Jews who settled there after immigrating in the 1960s, as did a large number of non-Jewish North Africans. They have on occasion clashed...
in September 2012.

Two masked men threw a grenade into the shop, injuring one person, but the fact that it rolled under a trolley prevented more casualties.

Police also found bomb-making equipment in a storage unit rented by Jeremie Bailly, 28, the alleged leader of the group.

Another suspected member, Jeremie Louis-Sydney, a petty criminal who had converted to radical Islam, was killed in October 2012 when police came to arrest him at his apartment in the eastern city of Strasbourg.

The trial is expected to run until July 7, with most of the accused facing terms of 30 years to life in prison.

Bangladesh
News Analysis: More is at stake than a statue
[Dhaka Tribune] Before we get into a debate over the difference between an idol and a sculpture, the fundamentalists among us should be asked whether they acknowledge and recognise the Supreme Court in the first place.

Indeed several Islamist attacks have been directed against courts and judges precisely because the holy mans said judges and courts uphold and represent an un-Islamic dispensation, if not a godless one.

The Supreme Court, where Lady Justice stands with her scales, is dedicated to upholding the constitution of Bangladesh. This constitution, in true democratic spirit, upholds and embraces the illusory sovereignty of the citizen.

It is the citizen who is the source of all power.

This philosophy directly contradicts with that of the Islamist parties, and hence the conflict between a democratic system and one prescribed by Islamists.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
when holy mans talk about Lady Justice and not the iconic Aparajeyo Bangla or any of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s busts, it can only be presumed that they attach more significance to this statue than the others.

Now, if they do not even recognise an institution then they cannot comment on it.

If Bangladesh does not recognise a country, then our government cannot urge that government to behave responsibly. But such reasoning can only be expected to work with a reasonable and rational quarter, which the Islamists have shown little evidence of being.

Soon after getting an assurance from the prime minister that Lady Justice would be removed (thankfully, the PM seems to have had second thoughts on this), the holy mans were out with the demand of removing all statues.

One presumes that the prime minister was just trying to placate a room full of holy mans when she assured them of having a word about the sword wielding, scale bearing Banglicised Lady Justice.

But the mullahs then demanded removal of all statues.

That would include all statues and sculptures like Aparajeyo Bangla, Raju Bhashkorjo, and the hundreds of busts of the prime minister’s father, not to mention the millions of idols of deities that are worshipped around the country.

This is a perfect example of why one should not relent to communal pressures, no matter how insignificant they might seem.

And as regards the debate of whether it is an idol or a statue, it is pointless.

Those saying it is not an idol but a sculpture are treading a very dangerous path. Even agreeing to take up such a line of argument would suggest one is worse or better than the other.

There is the suggestion that perhaps it would have been OK for the holy mans to make the demand if this were an idol that people worship.

It is not.

So what if this is the Roman goddess of justice? It is this concept of justice being blindfolded that we have embraced.

Bengali, Buddhist, agnostic, bigot or buffoon, Lady Justice doesn’t see the difference.

She has her scales to test the strength of one’s argument and evidence against another, and she has her sword to deliver swift justice.

Removal of the statue of Lady Justice now, would threaten the idols and statues everywhere forever.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News

Iraqi forces capture al-Thawra district

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government forces on Thursday took over al-Thawra district in western Mosul, ending four days of intense encounters with Islamic State militants.

The announcement by the Joint Operations Command came hours after forces recaptured al-Thawra al-Oula, a first section of the neighborhood. The troops invaded the area on Friday.

The army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service also said its forces were advancing further at al-Tenek and al-Sihha districts.

Iraqi forces recaptured the eastern side of Mosul in January after three months of fighting with Islamic State, and sat on a new offensive in February to retake the western region. Commanders said earlier this month that the Islamic State was controlling only less than seven percent of Iraqi territory, and that only six districts were still witnessing IS presence.

Islamic State has lost many of its senior commanders since operations launched to retake the western side of Mosul. Officials from the U.S.-led coalition estimate the number of remaining militants in Mosul by less than 1000.

The conflict in Mosul has so far displaced more than half a million of the city’s population, according to the Iraqi government and the United Nations.

Moreover, Jawdat declared “killing of Abdullah al-Husseini, a relative of Baghdadi, Khaled Ali Nada, minister of zakat, and Blood Judge [executioner judge] called abu Hussein as they were targeted in al-Zanjili district.”

In related news, Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi, known as Public Mobilization Units (PMUs), announced killing five IS members in the west of Mosul.

“The 28th brigade noticed five IS members while trying to infiltrate in the vicinity of Tal Abta within the forces’ operations unit,” the troops said in a statement adding “they were killed immediately.”

Islamic State has lost many of its senior commanders since operations launched to retake the western side of Mosul.

On Wednesday, Iraqi security forces announced controlling 30 percent of western Mosul’s Old City.

Iraqi troops, backed by U.S.-led coalition, recaptured eastern Mosul in January after an offensive was launched in mid-October. A new offensive was launched in February to retake the western side of the city.

Yarallah indicated inflicting losses in lives and property on the Islamic State.

Earlier on Thursday, the Joint Operations Command declared recapturing al-Thawra district in the west of the city, ending intense encounters with Islamic State militants that started on Friday. The announcement came hours after forces recaptured al-Thawra al-Oula, a first section of the neighborhood.

JI, JUI-F renege on resolution against Mardan lynching
And we all are blindsided by this occurrence.
[DAWN] A day after the National Assembly resolved to insert safeguards into the blasphemy law, the Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
(JI) and the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...
-Fazl (JUI-F) reneged on their commitment.

On Tuesday, the lower house had unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the brutal murder of Abdul Wali Khan University student Mashal Khan on fabricated charges of blasphemy.

On that day, JI’s Sher Akbar Khan and JUI-F’s Naeema Kishwer Khan had spoken in favour of the resolution, even though the latter had not signed it. But on Wednesday, JI parliamentary leader Sahibzada Tariqullah came out in opposition to the proposal, saying that his party would not support any changes to the blasphemy law.

"The law is the law; whosoever forms a lynch mob should be acted against. But the blasphemy law does not call on people to dispense mob justice, there is nothing wrong with it," he declared.

"The problems we are facing are due to the lack of proper enforcement of these laws," he insisted, adding that if people were punished under the blasphemy law, there would be no room for mob justice.

Ms Khan also seemed to have a change of heart, saying that there was nothing in the blasphemy law that made people take the law into their own hands and called for its proper implementation.

US Army tests drone-killing laser weapon
[RT] Amid concerns about Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
’s use of weaponized hobbyist drones, the US military is testing a laser weapon designed to take out the aerial menace, and small enough to be mounted on a Stryker armored vehicle.

The Mobile High Energy Laser (MEHEL) fires a 5-kilowatt beam that can either scramble the drone’s circuits and sever its communications with ground control ‐ a "soft kill" ‐ or destroy it outright in a "hard kill," according to the military publication Stars and Stripes.

Vehicles equipped with the MEHEL took part in the 10-day Maneuver Fires Integration Experiment exercises at Fort Sill, Oklahoma last week. A total of 50 drones were shot down, some just a few seconds after being engaged, Army spokeswoman Monica Gutherie said.

#4  Yeah, but the law doesn't allow it because all that shot may come back down and kill half the town. So they have to come up with some hideously complicated way of involving the authorities to bring them down that guarantees it won't because the drone has time to disappear after you catch it trying to peep into your bedroom window.

#5  Shotgun doesn't have the range, a 5Kw laser OTOH can shoot down drones from a mile or two away.

It's designed to be used against 'hobbyist drones', not military grade drones.

#6  Building a laser powerful enough to kill drones, even military ones, wouldn't be that expensive and they already have tech that could bring an operational version online quickly.

The real trick is detecting drones. Even the big ones we have possess a small radar signature. Tiny ones are pretty much impossible to find unless they are close.

Fugitive Turkish al-Qaida convict arrested working as imam
To be fair, nobody penetrated his awsome disguise for fourteen years.
[AlAhram] Turkish media reports say a runaway who was convicted in absentia for involvement in a 2003 kaboom against HSBC bank in Istanbul and of membership in al-Qaeda has been nabbed
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
The state-run Anadolu Agency said the man, identified by his initials Z.C., was arrested Wednesday in a village in the central Turkish province of Cankiri, where he was working as an acting village imam.

The private DHA agency reported that he had escaped to Afghanistan while on trial for his role in the attack. He was later convicted of membership in the al-Qaeda network and sentenced to six years in prison.

The al-Qaeda attacks in Istanbul in November 2003 targeted the HSBC bank, two synagogues and the British Consulate, killing 57 people.
The Times of Israel adds:
In the case of the Bet Israel and Neve Shalom synagogues, the attacks involved two bomb-laden trucks that drove into the buildings and then detonated, killing 23 and wounding over 300.

Andrew Cuomo Somehow Made $783,000 By Selling 3,200 Copies of His Memoir
[FREEBEACON] New York Gov. Andrew Sonny Cuomo (D.) reported over $200,000 in income off book royalties in 2016, bringing his total earnings off his 2014 memoir, which sold just 3,200 copies, to $783,000, according to a Buffalo News report.

HarperCollins initially printed 200,000 copies of Cuomo's book, "All Things Possible," but nearly all of them remain on the shelves, according to book sale tracker NPD BookScan. Cuomo, already paid $565,000 for the book in 2013 and 2014, somehow brought in an additional $218,100 off the book last year, according to tax filings shown to news hounds earlier this week.

The Buffalo News reports that his earnings indicate that Cuomo has made about $245 for each book sold.

The Grand Turk
Turkish Police Detain Leftist Editor after Referendum
His ideas prolly do suck, but because of this action, his ideas are better than Erdogan's
When the object is the purification of society, there are always new groups of heretics to be found.
[AlManar] Turkish police Thursday detained the editor of a website that denounced as illegitimate the victory of the ‘Yes’ camp in the referendum on expanding President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s powers, the news site said.

Left-wing website sendika.org said its editor-in-chief Ali Ergin Demirhan was held in a pre-down raid on its offices.

The arrest comes after at least 16 leftist activists involved in demonstrations against the ‘Yes’ victory were detained by Istanbul police on Wednesday. In all, a total of 38 arrest warrants were issued.

The ‘Yes’ camp won Sunday’s poll with just 51.41 percent of the vote but the opposition has alleged there was foul play that swung the outcome of the vote.

The authorities insist the referendum was clean and the election board on Wednesday rejected opposition demands for the poll to be annulled.

There have been daily street protests in anti-Erdogan neighborhoods in Istanbul after the referendum.

Sendika.org said Demirhan was detained on accusations of “organizing protests on social media while attempting to depict the results of the referendum as illegitimate” and “inciting people to enmity”.

It added that his hard disk and personal cell phone were confiscated in the raid.

The news site has made clear its opposition to the result, saying “the ‘Yes’ will not be legitimized, sendika.org will not be silenced” and calling for protests.

The opposition is particularly incensed by a last-minute move by the election authorities to accept ballot documents in envelopes without an official stamp.

Turkish media said that six people were detained in the Aegean city of Izmir on accusations of “insulting” Erdogan in public on the night of the referendum.
