Border wall talk leads top Mexican official to float American entry fee
A top Mexican official on Tuesday said that Mexico may consider charging a fee for Americans entering the country in what could be seen as a retaliation to President Trump's call for a border wall.
Remember who has more to lose here.
Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray, in a meeting with Mexico's top legislators, called Trump's plan an "unfriendly, hostile" act, and called on his colleagues to consider the entry fee.
And while we're at it, maybe some Top Men in the US could consider a 5% fee for any money wired from the US to Mexico. Or for any money over $200 carried there in one's pockets.
"We could explore -- not necessarily a visa, that could impede a lot of people from coming to Mexico -- but we could perhaps (have) a fee associated with entry," Videgaray said. "This is something that I'm sure will be part of our discussion, and I believe we can find points of agreement."

Videgaray went on to say that Mexico would not pay a cent toward the wall. He said if talks between the U.S. and Mexico fail to satisfy both countries, the Mexican government would consider reducing security cooperation.

"If the negotiation on other themes -- immigration, the border, trade -- isn't satisfactory to Mexico's interests, we will have to review our existing cooperation," Videgaray said. "This would be especially in the security areas ... and that involves the national immigration agency, the federal police and of course, the armed forces."

Trump has asked Congress to include a down payment on the wall in the spending bill but because of scrutiny from both sides, President Trump announced Monday that he’d be willing to wait until September to revisit the issue of funding; however, his stance on Mexico’s role in paying for the wall hasn’t changed.

The U.S. does not need Mexico as much as Mexico needs the U.S.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Napolitano's UC hid $175 million while demanding money, audit says
[FoxNews] The University of California hid a stash of $175 million in secret funds while its leaders requested more money from the state, an audit released on Tuesday said.
Once a crook, always a crook.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the audit found that the secret fund ballooned due to UC Office of the President overestimating how much is needed to run the school system that includes 10 campuses in the state. Janet Napolitano, the former Department of Homeland Security chief, is in charge of the school system.

Napolitano denied the audit's claim. She reportedly said the money was held for any unexpected expenses. Her office also denied the amount in the fund.
Yes unexpected expenses. Like paying Antifa or trips to southern France.
"The true amount is $38 million, which is roughly 10 percent of (the office's) operating and administrative budget, a prudent and reasonable amount for unexpected expenses such as cybersecurity threat response and emerging issues like increased support for undocumented students and efforts to prevent sexual violence and sexual harassment," her office said in a statement.

Elaine Howle, the state auditor who came up with the report, found that from 2012 to 2016 the office looked to raise more funding by inflating estimates. Howle also said that a top staff member in Napolitano's office improperly screened confidential surveys that were sent to each campus. Howle said answers that were critical of Napolitano's office were deleted or changed before being sent to auditors.

"I've never had a situation like that in my 17 years as state auditor," Howle said. "My attorneys are looking at whether any improper government activities occurred."

The UC Board of Regents is now hearing calls to overturn its decision to increase tuition this fall by 2.5 percent.

Howle said Napolitano also overcharged the system's 10 campuses to fund its operations, paid its employees significantly more than state employees and interfered in the auditing process.

"Taken as a whole, these problems indicate that significant change is necessary to strengthen the public's trust in the University of California," Howle wrote in the report.

The audit found that over the course of four years, the UC's central bureaucracy amassed more than $175 million in reserve funds by spending significantly less than it budgeted for and asking for increases in future funding based on its previous years' over-estimated budgets rather than its actual expenditures.

"In effect, the Office of the President received more funds than it needed each year, and it amassed millions of dollars in reserves that it spent with little or no oversight," the report said.

Napolitano argues the amount accounts for 10 percent of the operating and administrative budget. She called it "a modest amount for an organization our size."
Those 5 star outings don't pay for themselves!
The office argued it did not need to disclose its reserves because the regents had approved the spending in previous years' budgets. Howle said the undisclosed funds included $32 million collected from campuses that could have been spent for other purposes.

University employees and lawmakers, who requested the audit, expressed outrage over the audit's findings.

"Today we learned that after squandering millions of public dollars on bloated management and unaccountable 'initiatives,' (the Office of the President) has effectively been operating a slush fund that shields hundreds of millions of public dollars from public scrutiny," Kathryn Lybarger, president of UC's largest employee union, said in a statement.
She just showed you how Moonbeam and the federal government does things. Don't get pissed at them, you voted for this shit. Now eat the shit sandwich fucktards.

China-Japan-Koreas
The EMP Threat From North Korea Is Real, and Terrifying
h/t Instapundit
...An EMP disaster from a high-altitude blast seems like science fiction: There is a silent flash high in the sky, and everything using electricity just ... stops. Cars stop, power goes out, the Internet dies, satellites quit working, landline and mobile phone systems go out, and computers are destroyed. In a moment, we are back to 1850, as was dramatized in William Forstchen's 2009 novel One Second After.

While the total wipeout depicted in One Second After is probably exaggerated, the effects could knock out our power grid for months, and destroy critical communications and computer systems.

...In such a situation, there simply is no way to rule out the possibility that hundreds of millions could die.

To nuke one of our cities, the North needs to master ICBM construction, nuclear weapons miniaturization, precision long-range guidance technology, atmospheric re-entry vehicles, and fusing to trigger detonation at the right time after the hazardous re-entry. In contrast, an EMP attack requires only a small, light nuclear weapon and the ability to launch it as a satellite. Once over the U.S., it is detonated.

Already, two satellites launched by North Korea cross the U.S. every day.

Do they contain nuclear weapons? Probably not, but how can we know? Nuclear weapons don't emit much radiation until they go off, so they are hard to detect. I used to fly in a nuclear bomber with the weapon station just a few feet from my station with no shielding -- no need.

#1  putting a nuke in a satellite is another step up from putting a live nuke in a missile warhead - and NKOR probably hasn't done the latter yet

on the defense side, while we are close to having missile intercept capacity, once a nuke is in orbit, there is nothing much we can do to protect the stratosphere from a radiation burst - such an event would disable every civilian satellite and probably most of the military ones also

#2  For some decades now I've advised all the hospital workers I know to always carry a standard, non-LED flashlight on their person at all times.
I once worked in a hospital where (1) local power failed (2) hospital generator came on (3) 30 seconds later the hospital generator failed. A surgery in the the OR paused while staff frantically looked for flashlights. Some were trapped in darkened stairwells & had to feel their way to the exits.

#3  My habit whenever there has been a power failure is to find one of my transistor radios, turn it on & check to see if local stations are still on the air. Also pick up my landline phone (a 1983 Western Electric handset) to check for dial tone. If they're both working, I figure no EMP affecting me (at the moment). If all that goes dead along with the grid, hmmm...

#4  An EMP attack sounds like a superior way to disable a modern nation, maximum damage for minimum effort. A short series of EMP attacks spaced out over a few hours or days would clear out the survivalist's backup devices they have been keeping in Faraday cages.

#11  It would only take two, 10KT bombs, detonated at 250,000' to shut the light out to America for months, if not a couple years. While most folks only have enough food and water to last a few days, the riots and looting would begin within the first week. You don't have to blow America or other western nations up to destroy them. It would come from within. This plays the same for Russia, and it why I always say we don't need thousands of nukes. Just three or four detonated amongst the satellites over Russia and their country is over.

#14  I've got a dumb question. When the Enola Gay dropped Little Boy over Hiroshima, why did the generated EMP not fry the electronic circuits in the Enola Gay?

Not a dumb question at all! The electronics at the time were tube based. Modern electronics are transistor based and subject to EMP damage.

Main difference is that tubes anodes, cathodes and grids were large and spaced far enough apart that damages, if any, would have little effect. OTOH, transistors components are closely spaced, in fact are in direct contact with each others and easily damaged. Integrated circuits components are even smaller.

The military knows this and as such use hardened electronics designed specifically to withstand radiation and EMP. That's a major factor why military grade electronic cost so much.
Posted by: Seeking cure for ignorance || 04/26/2017 18:43 Comments || Top||

#15  JohnQC,

The quick answer is that tube-era tech is pretty much resistant to EMP. ICs and transistors....no Bueno.

One thing to keep in mind here though - EMP damage is a function of burst strength and altitude. There's a reason nobody's done it for real yet. (Not saying it CAN'T happen, but the threat is somewhat overhyped.) And if it was done, the ICBMs, bombers, and subs won't need the satellites to hit their targets in the DPRK.

#17  I have a hard time believing any of the EMP hype. Yes, long electric lines will blow a bunch of breakers in substations all over the place, and some electronic systems that are unshielded will reset or much less likely be damaged. But, the energy received is proportional to the antenna surface which is tiny. And computers are mostly shielded inside grounded cases.

Like the northwest blackout it might take a few days to get things started up in the right sequence, but not many people would be injured.

Put those same weapons used for EMP on Seoul or Tokyo and at least a million people would be killed. Much much worse.

#21  Question: What about a camping lantern with several straight fluorescent bulbs? I have one of those as well as an old fashioned flashlight suitable for hitting someone over the head, if necessary.

If the filaments at the ends of the fluorescent tubes are still intact, they should mostly work fine. The 'mostly' issue is the electronic starter that start the fluorescent tube glowing, will they survive?

The flashlight may or may not work, again it's a filament thing, they are kind of fragile. You can make sure the spare bulb at the base of the flashlight is still good, there should be enough metal to protect it and you can swap it out if needed. Maglite knew what they were doing!

But, the energy received is proportional to the antenna surface which is tiny. And computers are mostly shielded inside grounded cases.

Sure if that's all there is. What most people seems to forget is the connectors; the wires connecting the IC to other devices, the computer wires for power, network, USPes, displays, etc.etc.. And then there's the circuit board traces, all of those makes wonderful antennas!

Computer metal cases are not to protect the computer interior, it's a FCC requirement to keep all those RF the computer generate from getting out. Otherwise we would see mostly all plastic cases. I would not rely on Computer cases to protect the computer from an EMP burst. A nearby lightning burst (which does produce EMP of various strength) is often enough to take out the computer.

Skidmark has it right, keep the smoke in the device and it'll work just fine, once the smoke escape, all bets are off!
Posted by: Seeking cure for ignorance || 04/26/2017 22:08 Comments || Top||

#22  I've been in an airplane struck by lightning multiple times on the approach. And am still here to comment. Not a thing for that plane and all of its stuff. And lighting on the surface of the plane half a meter from where I was sitting dumped way more EMP on my cell phone than some nuke in space ever could.

And that phone still works fine.

Just stuff your EMP dreams. It is not a thing. You need to worry more about bad bacteria at Chipotle or your neighbors smoking cigarettes in bed than EMP.

[Aljazeera] Energy department approves Golden Pass energy giant to export liquefied natural gas to global market.

The US energy department has given its final approval to Golden Pass, a global energy company, to export domestically produced liquefied natural gas (LNG) to countries that do not have a free trade agreement with the US.

Golden Pass will be able to export up to 2.21 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day to the global market.

In a statement on Wednesday, the energy department said "it conducted an extensive review of the Golden Pass application. Among other factors, the Department considered the economic, energy security, and environmental impacts, including macroeconomic studies that showed positive benefits to the US economy".

Golden Pass, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum (which owns 70 percent) and ExxonMobil (30 percent), has developed its preexisting facilities in Sabine Pass in Jefferson County, Texas to be able to export LNG.

LNG is easy to collect as an oil industry waste product, requires little pre-consumption processing and burns much cleaner than 'additive enriched' gasoline.

#5  I might introduce you all to "drip".

When I was a kid, if you had a straight 6 Chevy or a flathead Ford you could go to the condensate drains on natural gas pipelines and fill your tank with the condensed hydrocarbons from natural gas...low octane gasoline but worked in old cars.

Free gas and it wasn't stealing...no one cared about drip in those days...growing up in Texas in the early 60s did have its advantages.

#7  LNG requires cryogenic fuel tanks, so no go.

CNG (Compressed NG) requires expensive 3000 PSI tanks which still store only 10% the weight of fuel of a gasoline tank.

LPG is too dangerous for cars since LPG is heavier than air and any leak is just waiting for a spark to become a fuel-air bomb.

If Julius Malema comes to power, a second Holocaust is certain
[Aljazeera] Julius Malema is one of the most controversial political figures in South Africa today. Malema was a rising star in the ruling African National Congress party (ANC) until 2012 when he was expelled after a bitter fallout with President Jacob Zuma.

Many commentators thought he would disappear into oblivion after his expulsion but in 2013, he founded his own political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). To his many thousands of supporters, Malema's aggressive focus on the rights of poor black South Africans makes him a future leader of South Africa. To many others, his bombastic rhetoric is offensive.

After 22 years in power, the ruling ANC's claim to represent the interests of the black majority is under question as the voice of Malema and his EFF party appears to resonate with growing dissent across the country.

Filmmaker, Rehad Desai (watch his Emmy Award-winning film Miners Shot Down here) takes us on a personal journey through this clash over the past five years.

So who are the prescribed victims; the whites, the ANC, Asians, all of the above? It's not clear to me but if I was betting, based on the recent history, would be all of the above more or less in that order.

The parable of the Good Samaritan lived out at Wallingford air crash
[News8] WALLINGFORD, Conn. -- As investigators try to piece together exactly what happened, a community is mourning the loss of a well-known doctor, Dr. Joseph Tomanelli.

"I immediately got out of the car the woman started running towards the crash. It was pretty intense the heat was pretty intense," said Meriden’s Dan Mercurio.

He says Good Samaritans did what they could on scene, and calls came into 9-1-1 around 6:00 p.m. last night. Before Mercurio recorded the fiery plane crash on his phone, he says he helped search for 56-year-old Dr. Joseph Tomanelli, hoping he was not on the plane.

"A civil air patrolman came out of the airport and said gee maybe the father was thrown from the plane into the landfill," said Mercurio.

Italy arrests man who planned attacks on 'non-believers'
[TheLocal.it] The 29-year-old had promoted Islamist extremism online, calling in one message for "non-believers" to be "roasted on kebab skewers" and fed to dogs, according to a police report.

A judge for preliminary investigations described him as "an extremely dangerous subject" who posed a "very high risk of moving on to carrying out serious acts of violence".

The man, who had lived in Italia since 2008, used 'walkie-talkie app' Zello to discuss his plans to carry out an attack in Italia.

According to a report from Rai News, he also shared material about combat techniques, how to throw police Sherlocks off track, and behaviours to adopt in order to become "invisible" while living in a Western country.

In one chat group, he styled himself as the Isis group's spokesperson in Italia, using the nickname 'ibn dawala7', meaning 'son of the state', and swore allegiance to Isis chief His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
He also shared images of terror group Isis on Facebook, and used social media to praise recent terror attacks across Europe.

Turin police, assisted by Italia's Special Operations Group, jugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
the man on Monday afternoon, following seven months of surveillance after an FBI tip-off.

According to Sherlocks, he had been living with an Italian mother and son, who had come to think of him "almost as an adopted child".

Italia has expelled a total of 31 people from the country over terror links so far this year. In total, the Interior Ministry has ordered the expulsion of 163 people for religious extremism since January 2015.

And at the end of March, the country's police force announced that they had busted a ring which had planned to blow up Venice's famous Rialto Bridge.

Ann Coulter Sponsor Chickens Out of Berkeley Free Speech Sponsorship
Young America’s Foundation (YAF) has pulled out of Ann Coulter’s Thursday event at UC Berkeley, blaming the college for allowing left-wing extremists to terrorize conservatives on campus.

"When Young America’s Foundation confirmed Ann Coulter would speak at UC-Berkeley as part of YAF’s nationwide campus lecture program on April 27, we assumed UC Berkeley would take all steps necessary to ensure the safety of students attending the educational event," the group declared in a blog post on Tuesday. "In the meantime we discovered that the University of California Police Department at Berkeley has an official ’stand-down’ policy for any situation that develops on campus as long as the situation doesn’t involve the imminent loss of life, allowing the leftist thugs who have terrorized Berkeley’s campus to do so without consequence."

WPC Fletcher murder suspect named ‘Libyan Spy Chief’
[Libya Observer] A former Qadaffy officer, suspected of having links to the shooting of British police officer WPC Yvonne Fletcher outside the Libyan embassy in 1984, has been picked to head the Libyan Intelligence Agency.

The UN-installed Presidency Council (PC), headed by Fayaz Sirraj, issued a three-article decree on Monday naming deputies for the country’s Intelligence Agency chief.

In the first article, the Presidency Council selected Brigadier General Abdelkader al-Tuhami, a notorious officer at the Foreign Security Agency of Qadaffy regime, as Deputy Chief of Intelligence Agency for Security Affairs and Brig. Abdul-Majeed al-Dabaa as Deputy Chief of Intelligence Agency for Public Affair.

In the second one, Sirraj picked Abdelkader al-Tuhami to head the Libyan Intelligence Agency temporarily until a chief is found.

The third article stated that the decree shall be effective from the date on which it is made.

The murder suspect, al-Tuhami, was nominated in December 2016 by PC member Fathi al-Mijibri as Chief of the Illegal Immigration Fight Center, but Fayaz Sirraj cancelled the nomination to select him this time for a higher security position.

No comments were made by the British government regarding the nomination of Abdelkader al-Tuhami for the two security posts.

The official inquiry into Fletcher's death concluded she had been killed by shots from a Sterling submachine gun fired from the first floor of the Libyan embassy. Abdelkader al-Tuhami was among the embassy’s security team at that time.

ICC issues arrest warrant for Gaddafi's interior security chief
[Libya Observer] The Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court (ICC) unsealed the warrant of arrest for al-Tuhami Mohamned Khaled, the chief of interior security department in the Qadaffy regime.

"The Qadaffy regime official is allegedly responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the context of the situation in Libya in 2011." The ICC explained on Monday.

The ICC also remarked that the unsealing of the warrant was requested by the ICC Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda.

""Reclassifying the warrant of arrest as public may facilitate al-Tuhami's arrest and surrender as all states will then be aware of its existence" and "could foster support and cooperation for an arrest operation from the international community". Bensouda indicated.

According to the ICC's report, the arrest warrant was issued under seal on April 18, 2013.

By that warrant, al-Tuhami was wanted for committing four crimes against humanity (imprisonment, torture, persecution, and other inhumane violations) allegedly committed in Libya from 15 February 2011 until 24 August 2011, besides being also charged with three war crimes (torture, cruel treatment and outrages upon personal dignity) allegedly committed in Libya from at least early March 2011 to 24 August 2011.

Turkish airstrikes kill 18 Kurd rebels
(Reuters) At least 18 Kurdish YPG fighters and media officials were killed in Turkish air strikes on a headquarters of the militia in northeastern Syria on Tuesday, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

The YPG, a U.S. ally in the fight against Islamic State, did not immediately give its own precise death toll.

Turkey’s military bombed the YPG and Kurdish militants in neighbouring Iraq early on Tuesday, widening a campaign against groups affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The Turkish military has carried out air strikes against Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) militants near Iraq’s Sinjar mountains and northeastern Syria to prevent the group from sending weapons and explosives for attacks inside Turkey, it said on Tuesday.

The two regions have become “terror hubs”, the Turkish army said, with the PKK frequently using these areas to channel militants, weapons, bombs and ammunition into Turkey.

“To destroy these terror hubs which threaten the security, unity and integrity of our country and our nation and as part of our rights based on international law, air strikes have been carried out….and terrorist targets have been struck with success,” the Turkish army said in a statement. The air bombardment was carried out around 02.00 a.m. (7 p.m. ET on Monday) local time, it added.

Erdogan says will resume membership of ruling AKP once referendum results announced
[Al Ahram] Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview with Rooters that he can and will return to the ruling AK Party once the High Electoral Board (YSK) announces official results of a referendum that will give him sweeping powers.

Erdogan told Rooters that a party congress would decide whether he would resume leadership of the party, adding that the timing of the congress would be decided by party officials.

He said early elections following a narrow victory in last Sunday's referendum were not on The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's agenda and added that neither the country's constitutional court nor the European Court of Human Rights had the authority to review the outcome of the vote.

Erdogan also said that he had not discussed a potential cabinet reshuffle with Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

He said developments showed Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) would surpass $22.5 billion, which Turkey had seen during his time as prime minister, in 2017.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

Kop dies in bombing attack in al-Salam region

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A police agent was killed due to a bomb blast in western Baghdad, a police source said on Tuesday.

“A bomb stuck beneath a car driven by the police agent exploded while he was passing through al-Nasr and al-Salam regions, west of Baghdad.,” the source told AlSumaria News, adding that the police member was immediately killed.

“Security forces cordoned off the accident spot,” the source added.

Violence surged in Iraq with the emergence of Islamic State militants who took over large areas of the country in 2014 leaving 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said. Baghdad was the second most affected province with 84 deaths and 246 injuries, according to the organization’s monthly casualty count.

Daily bombings that target civilians and security personnel are witnessed in Baghdad.

IS militants have claimed responsible for several bloody explosions and attacks that hit the capital in the past months.

It is believed that IS have begun escalating attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.

Moreover, observers argue that attacks outside the city prove that the extremist group can still pose a security threat for all cities.

Bomb attack al-Daura area leaves 1 wounded

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) A police source revealed that a civilian was injured in a bomb blast, south of Baghdad, Alsumaria News reported on Tuesday.

The source said that a roadside improvised explosive device exploded, near shops in Arab Jabbour area, in al-Daura area, south of Baghdad, injuring a civilian.

Security forces arrive in the area of incident, while ambulances transferred the wounded to a nearby hospital to receive the needed treatment, the source added on condition of anonymity.

The capital, Baghdad, is witnessing a surge of violence and several suicide attacks, using booby-trapped vehicles and explosive belts, in addition to separate attacks against civilians and security forces that leave dozens of casualties.

Two Abu Sayyaf leaders killed in Lanao del Sur clashes

[Inquirer] Two Abu Sayyaf leaders and at least four foreign fighters were among the terrorists killed in clashes that spanned three days as Philippine security forces pursued a local terror group in Lanao del Sur province.

Military chief of staff Eduardo Año said three Indonesians and a Malaysian, believed to be members of the Jemaah Islamiyah terror group, were among 37 militants who were killed in the assault. He said 14 of the dead had been identified, but did not name any of the slain foreigners or armed men.

Rolando Joselito Bautista said among those killed was Abu Imam Bantayaw, an Abu Sayyaf leader based in this town; and a subcommander identified only as Mael, who was killed and buried here on Sunday night. Bautista said one of those slain, believed to be a foreigner, was buried in a bomb crater.

Troops have also recovered the passport of an Indonesian national from the clash site in Barangay Gacap, he said.

Military spokesman Nixon Fortes said there would be no letup in operations against the Maute group, which had established a new camp in Piagapo. The area is just five kilometers from Camp Pukta of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front faction led by Abdullah Macapaar, alias Kumander Bravo, according to Fortes.

Año, in an interview on Tuesday, said the four were among the 130 foreigners living in Mindanao who are thought to be supporting local Abu Sayyaf militants. He said mopping-up operations were ongoing as soldiers tried to locate Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon.

[CNNPHILIPPINES] Thirty-seven members of the Maute terror group, including four foreign suspects, were killed in a series of encounters in Lanao del Sur, the military said Tuesday.

Ground and air strikes against the terror group began early morning on April 22 in Barangay Gacap, in the town of Piagapo in Lanao del Sur, said Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief General Eduardo Año, in a chance interview with news hounds.

Among those killed were members of the local Maute group, and three Indonesians and one Malaysian who were members of Jemaah Islamiyah, an Indonesia-based terror group with links to Al Qaeda, Año said.

The military believes Maute members obtained their long firearms from an Indonesian terrorist affiliated with Jemaah Islamiyah.

After nearly three days of fighting, government troops seized the Maute group's "main camp" in Piagapo on Monday, the military added.

Authorities recovered a flag with ISIS insignia, rifle and fragmentation grenades, other items used for making explosives, cellphones, and camouflage uniforms, said Lt. Gen Carlito Galvez, chief of the military's Western Mindanao Command, in a press briefing on Monday.

A passport belonging to an Indonesian national was also recovered, he said.

Three killed in latest Venezuela protests
[Al Ahram] Three people were killed in Venezuela on Monday in another day of nationwide protests against leftist president Nicolas Maduro, raising the corpse count to 24 in weeks of anti-government demonstrations.

The latest casualties come on a day anti-Maduro demonstrators blocked major roads in the South American nation, and as the opposition called for a mass protest in Caracas on Wednesday.

The steady stream of anti-government marches, which began on April 1, usually begin peacefully but then degenerate into festivities with security forces and even looting at night.

Two government trucks in eastern Caracas were set alight on a freeway by masked protesters who poured oil on the road. Police nearby did not immediately intervene, AFP journalists saw.

Elsewhere in the capital, riot police fired tear gas at another group of protesters who threw stones at them.

"We're blocking roads so that Maduro understands that he must leave. He has us enduring hunger. I can't find milk for my 16-month-old baby," said Amalia Duran, 41, a resident of the working class Caracas neighborhood of Petare.

"I'm here because I'm tired," added Yorwin Ruiz, 26, also protesting in Caracas. "I've been to more than 20 pharmacies searching for a simple antibiotic." Ruize hoped that with the continuous protests "we at least can get elections."

Opposition politician Miguel Pizarro called for a mass demonstration on Wednesday, which he said will head downtown to protest outside one of three government offices -- but he refused to say which because he didn't want to give the government "72 hours to prepare" for the demonstrators.

14-year-old girl appeals to dissolve her own marriage
[Dhaka Tribune] A 14-year-old girl has appealed to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Banaripara in Barisal to dissolve the marriage she was forced into against her will.

Nurun Nahar Mili was married to 25-year-old Zahirul Islam, an office assistant of the Joint District Judge’s Court in Barisal on April 14. She is a student of Grade X at Khalishakota Girls School.

Mili was forced to marry Zahirul after her father Abu Bakar Siddik visited home on vacation from Kuwait and the family went on a trip to Noakhali.

The mother admitted that she had faked her daughter’s birth certificate to legitimise the marriage.

But in her defence, Nasrin Akther Moni claimed: "She is out of control; she stays out of the house most of the time in the name of educational purposes. So we thought it is better to marry her off."

Banaripara UNO Israt Jahan received Mili’s complaint on Monday. A meritorious student of science, Milli in her letter expressly said that she wanted to continue her studies.

Since the girl was already married, the UNO gave her 72 hours to think if she really wanted to dissolve the marriage.

"A meeting with the appellant, her parents, school headmaster, and the local UP chairman and members has been called on Thursday to decide on the matter," UNO Israt said.

The groom, Zahirul, claimed he had no knowledge of her actual age or the circumstance under which she had been married off.

Fifth Column
Protesters Storm Heritage Foundation
[THEFEDERALISTPAPERS.ORG] The Daily Caller posted a Facebook live video from the Heritage Foundation where Leftist protesters took over the main lobby and began chanting and shouting in protest of the President and GOP Congress’s proposed budget.

The budget proposal includes large cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency, among other cuts to agencies dealing with the environment and disaster programs, a proposal which has Leftists in a fit.

Chants included shouts of "Water not walls," and "The people will never be divided."

The protesters occupied the building for approximately 10-15 minutes, until security was finally able to contain the situation and escort the protesters out of the building. There must have been well over a hundred or so in the lobby area, if not more. It was jam-packed.

As the protesters were taken out from the lobby, they all chanted in unison "We’ll be back."

Shouts and cheers could be heard from outside the building as well, where the protest continues as of 11:30 am ET. Bongo drums can also be heard as part of the protest.

Several different chants have all been made in unison, and new ones are continually coming up as they continue to chant outside the building. One of the speakers using a megaphone said that they do not appreciate strangers telling them what they need in their communities (regarding clean water, climate change issues, etc.)

(Sarcasm on) However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
there is no word over whether or not they will resist the strangers at the EPA from telling them what regulations they have to comply with (sarcasm off).

One of the protest leaders spoke about her experience in Flint, Michigan and the water crisis that has been happening over the past three years. Noticeably absent was any mention of the President’s recent grant to Flint to help deal with the water crisis (convenient...).

Iraq
4 die in roadside bomb attack in Diyala
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Three children and an elder man were killed, while other civilians were injured in IED blasts, Mohamed Baqir al-Tamimi, mayor of abu Said town in Diyala province, said.

“Three children and an elder man were killed, three others were injured due to three bomb blasts near two houses at the outskirts of al-Mahwala village, 5 KM east of abu Saida,” Tamimi said adding that “security troops defused another bomb in the same area without casualties.”

Tamimi indicated conducting investigations by security services, urging the government to find solution to stop the bloodshed in the town.

Several violent attacks have been witnessed in abu Saida, located northeast of Baqubah, over the past few months leading to unstable security situations and leaving casualties.

Islamic State is believed to have been escalating attacks outside the city of Mosul, where the group has been losing ground and personnel since October, so as to relieve pressure by government forces on that front and to divert attention from group losses.

According to a monthly count by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), 1115 civilians were killed in violence during March.

Violence surged in Iraq with the emergence of the Islamic State in 2014 to proclaim a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”. The group’s reign took on an increased civilian toll that added to killings occurring since the U.S. invasion in 2003.

Bring Back Smoking
[THEZMAN] Here’s soemthing else. Smoking rates began to decline in the middle of the last century, with the Baby Boomer interest in health. Nicotine is known to increase focus and increase your cognitive abilities. It’s why writers and computer programmers were all smokers. In fact, STEM fields in the 20th century were dominated by men who chain smoked at their desks. Anyone who has had to sit for hours working a math problem knows how exhausting it can be. Even a small boost in focus has enormous results.

What if the apparent uptick in Western IQ was accelerated by smoking? Tobacco was introduced to the West in the 16th century and its use increased steadily. By the 18th century, the use of tobacco was common. By the 19th century, smoking cigarettes was ubiquitous. Everyone smoked. It also corresponds with the Industrial Revolution. Once tobacco use became universal, Western technological progress took off like a rocket, culminating in a rocket literally taking off and putting men on the moon.

Once the anti-smoking crusades got a purchase in the 60’s and smoking rates declined, it does appear that the West began to decline. Perhaps that small boost to our cognitive ability had a huge impact on our intellectual achievements. Now that the crutch is gone, we’re doing idiotic things like putting minorities in charge and inviting in low-IQ barbarians from the fringes of civilization. Perhaps the lunacy that has gripped the West is simply the withdraw symptoms of kicking the habit.

Maybe we need to start smoking again.

Drexel Faces Backlash From Donors, Students Over Professor's Offensive Tweets
[INSIDER.FOXNEWS] Drexel University is reportedly facing a backlash from donors and prospective students, prompting an investigation by the school into some offensive tweets by a professor.

George Ciccariello-Maher wrote last Christmas about how he wanted "white genocide" and last month he wrote that he wanted to "vomit" when he saw an airline passenger give up his seat to a U.S. soldier.

The school is concerned about the repercussions of Ciccariello-Maher's tweets, including another anti-police message in which he wrote "off the pigs."

The tweets, and the resulting complaints to the private Philadelphia school, triggered an April 3 email from the university's provost to Ciccariello-Maher about his "extremely damaging conduct."

According to reports, the email informed him about the formation of "a special committee of inquiry to investigate your conduct and provide findings and recommendations."

The provost wrote that "at least two potential significant donors to the university have withheld previously promised donations," while numerous prospective students said they would not attend due to the inflammatory comments.

Additionally, Pennsylvania State Senate President Joe Scarnati (R-Punxsutawney) and State Sens. John Rafferty (R-Montgomery) and Ryan Aument (R-Lancaster) wrote a letter to Drexel administration demanding Ciccariello-Maher be fired.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
12 die in Idlib airstrikes
(Reuters) Syrian or Russian air strikes killed more than a dozen people and severely damaged a hospital in and around a town in rebel-held Idlib province on Tuesday, local medical workers and a monitoring group said.

The attacks came as Syria’s air force and Russian jets intensified their bombardment of Idlib, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Idlib is an insurgent stronghold, one of the few large areas still under rebel control in the west of the country. Rebels and their families who have chosen to leave areas under government siege around Damascus in evacuation deals have headed for Idlib.

A spokesman at the hospital in Kafr Takharim in Idlib told Reuters an air strike hit its courtyard killing 14 people, including patients.

The Observatory said there were no deaths from the hospital strike, but that the bombardment had put it out of action.

Separate air strikes southwest of Kafr Takharim killed at least 12 people including civilians and rebel fighters, the Observatory said.

Russian Duma forbids naming kids with numbers, obscenities
[RT] The Russian State Duma has banned parents from naming their children with exotic names, which include numbers, symbols and swear words.
"This is my son, Vosem, and my daughter, Piz'da.
The MPs passed the legislation on Friday after exactly one year since the bill was submitted to the parliament on April 21, 2016. The new law amends the Family Code with an article, stating that numbers, alphanumeric designations, symbols, punctuation marks (except hyphen) can’t be used by parents when naming their kids.
"This is my other daughter, Hyphen, and her twin sister, Emdash."
The deputies also outlawed obscenities, ranks and titles from being names of parts of children’s names in Russia.
"And my cousin, Knyaz Khui."
Until now, the registry offices in the country had no power to deny registry of a name for being dissonant, offensive or unpronounceable.
It takes a lot to be unpronounceable in Russian.
After a family in Siberian city of Perm called its baby Lucifer, the MPs also discussed banning names, which offend religious feelings, but the provision didn’t make it into the law.

Arabia
Yemeni militias hold 6K prisoners
Taiz- Undersecretary of the Human Rights Ministry in Yemen, Nabil Majid revealed that the number of detainees coercively held by coup militias is currently around 6,000.

At least 73 of those incarcerated have died under torture according to the information the ministry received, Majid told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

“The militias did not only commit violations through the arrests and killings but have also recruited over 10,000 children into the war,” he said, adding that militias use civilians as human shields– such was the case in the coastal city of Mocha, west of Taiz.

Majid’s remarks came on the eve of meetings held for the financing of a humanitarian response plan in Yemen, scheduled to be held in Geneva on Tuesday.

The United Nations will hold a high-level conference in Geneva to raise funds to address the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. The conference is to be organized in cooperation with the governments of Switzerland and Sweden.

World Food Program “WFP looks forward to the conference, which will be held under the auspices of the United Nations and with the support of the Swedish and Swiss governments, to mobilize immediate support for Yemen,” said Stephen Anderson, WFP country director for Yemen.

Majid said that since the government headed by President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi returned to Aden, human rights ministry officials have been saving no effort in reaching out for Arab, regional and international action. These efforts will see tangible progress during upcoming periods, Majid added.

Regarding the pestering suffered by human rights teams, Majid said that the ministry is working to prevent coup militias from impeding humanitarian efforts in areas of conflict. He added that the ministry called on international organizations to be located nearby territory controlled by government forces, however, a number of teams insisted on staying in coup-run Sanaa.

The ministry is also working on establishing a center to reverse war-related mental health afflictions in women and children and rehabilitate children recruited by militias for fighting.

Yemen is reeling from the conflict between Houthi insurgents, aligned with Iran, against the constitutionally elected and internationally recognized government of Hadi. At least 10,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

Judge Blocks Trump Threat To Withhold 'Sanctuary City' Funds
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] A federal judge on Tuesday blocked President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's attempt to withhold funding from "sanctuary cities" that do not cooperate with U.S. immigration officials, saying the president has no authority to attach new conditions to federal spending.

U.S. District Judge William Orrick issued the preliminary injunction in two lawsuits - one brought by the city of the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
, the other by Santa Clara County - against an executive order targeting communities that protect immigrants colonists from deportation.

The injunction will stay in place while the lawsuits work their way through court.

The judge rejected the administration's argument that the executive order applies only to a relatively small pot of money and said Trump cannot set new conditions on spending approved by Congress.

"Federal funding that bears no meaningful relationship to immigration enforcement cannot be threatened merely because a jurisdiction chooses an immigration enforcement strategy of which the president disapproves," the judge said.

#2  Little bit of background on this piece of shit judge:

Orrick was also in the employ of the Department of Justice in 2010 when Arizona passed their immigration law known as SB 1070. The immigration law mirrored the Federal immigration laws that the Obama regime refused to enforce. In response to laws relating to immigration passed in Arizona in 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that immigration is the purview of the federal government, not the states. Orrick was involved in coordinating the Obama administration’s arguments against SB 1070

Judge William H. Orrick, III, granted the injunction just hours after the order was requested by the National Abortion Federation.
Even though the National Abortion Federation filed its claim only hours before, Orrick quickly decided in their favor that the abortionists they represent would, ironically, be “likely to suffer irreparable injury, absent an ex parte temporary restraining order, in the form of harassment, intimidation, violence, invasion of privacy, and injury to reputation, and the requested relief is in the public interest.”
Not only is Orrick essentially a tenured retainer of the Obama administration, his wife is a vocal abortion advocate. As a result, Orrick used his influence from the bench to issue a restraining order in 2015 against the advocacy group responsible for undercover videos purporting to show Planned Parenthood employees plotting to sell baby organs.

According to Public Citizen, a consumer rights advocacy group, Orrick donated approximately $30,000 to committees supporting Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign for president. He also helped raise an additional $200,000 in contributions to the Obama campaign, thus confirming his bundling activities.

In essence, he is a creature of the hard left and Obumble.

Also since the lawsuit is only brought by San Fran and Santa Clara county, it is void elsewhere.

So the judge broke the law by ordering this everywhere to stop.

These activist judges cannot be allowed to keep up this bullshit. At this point I could care less how it happens. The left has proven it is willing to do anything to shut us up. I say we return the favor in spades.

On Tuesday, the courts sentenced three defendants to life imprisonment, while the rest were slapped with between three and ten years in jail. They activists were all found guilty of "forming a terror cell and illegally possessing explosives," Arabic-language Lualua television network reported.

The development came only two days after Bahrain’s Supreme Court of Appeal sentenced three defendants to 15 years and three others to 10 years behind bars.

The seventh defendant was slapped with three years in jail.

They were all charged with "forming a terror cell and possessing explosives in the western village of Dar Kulaib."

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country on February 14, 2011.

Trump Indicates He’s Open To Delaying Border Wall Funding In Order To Avoid Government Shutdown
[DAILYCALLER] Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
signaled that he is willing to delay funding for the border wall in order to pass a spending bill and avoid a government shutdown at the end of the week.

The president said he was open to delaying funding for construction of the wall until September in a meeting with a group of news hounds at the White House Monday evening.

Trump said this does’t mean he has changed his mind on building the wall.

"Don’t let the fake media tell you that I have changed my position on the WALL," he tweeted Tuesday. "It will get built and help stop drugs, human trafficking etc."

Turkish jets bomb US-backed forces in Iraq, Syria
[FOXNEWS] More than 30 U.S.-backed Syrian and Iraqi Kurdish fighters were killed in a series of Arclight airstrikes carried out by Turkish jets on Monday, two American defense officials confirmed to Fox News.

Dozens of fighters were also maimed in the strikes. Both officials said there were no U.S. troops among the fighters who were hit. The closest U.S. soldiers were about six miles from the site of the strikes.

"This is very serious," said one outraged U.S. official.

U.S. and Russian troops in the areas of the attacks were warned about an hour before 24 Turkish jets and two Turkish drones bombed locations in northern Iraq and northeast Syria. Senior Russian officials contacted U.S. counterparts to try to get The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

Hezbollah, Lebanese & Syrian Armies Squeeze Terrorists in Northeastern Barrens
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Hezbollah soldiers managed on Monday to kill and injure a number of ISIS faceless myrmidons in the barrens of northeastern Ras Baalbek after striking their command center in Shoabet al-Khabiye area.

Al-Manar TV Channel revealed some of the operation’s details, explaining that Hezbollah drones monitored and observed the terrorists’ posts for several days before carrying out the attack.

Al-Manar report added that the Hezbollah infantry advanced towards the terrorists’ posts and launched anti-armor missiles onto the residence of ISIS commander in the area, Mowafaq al-Jarban, killing scores of the group’s bad boys.

The Lebanese army helicopters also targeted on Monday night 3 ISIS posts in Ras Baalbek, inflicting heavy losses upon the terrorists.

The Syrian warplanes, in turn, struck Nusra Front faceless myrmidons in Flia barrens in Qalamoun in Damascus countryside, killing or injuring a number of them.

These operations pressed on the faceless myrmidons as the sources reported that ISIS and Nusra faceless myrmidons clashed in order to control their last possible exit towards the Lebanese town of Arsal.

Mexican border court
[DailyMail]
o Federal court in Del Rio, Texas, is just three miles from Mexican border and deals with stream of illegal immigrants

o Get-tough policy puts them in front of judge at the courthouse - who tells them a guilty plea for illegal crossing means jail time

o Jailing them federal magistrate Collis White says: 'If you can find a legal way to come back, you're more than welcome. But it has to be just that.'

o In other jurisdictions around the country offenders are usually allowed to skip criminal charges in return for quick deportation

o But attorney general says illegal border crossers will now be arrested, prosecuted and then deported - like happens in Del Rio

o Half of all federal prosecutions are already related to immigration

Roadside bomb in Somalia kills 8 soldiers, police say
[NEWS24] A Somali police official says a roadside bomb in a remote town in Somalia's semiautonomous state of Puntland has killed eight soldiers and injured three others.

Ahmed Mohamed tells The Associated Press that Sunday's blast targeted a military convoy in Galgala. Security forces have been battling Islamic State-linked fighters in the region.

The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab extremist group claimed responsibility for the blast. ISIS-linked extremists also have carried out such attacks in the past.

Spain arrests four men over links to attacks in Belgium
[Al Ahram] Spanish police incarcerated
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
Tuesday four men over their alleged links to suspects held in Belgium over their alleged involvement in the Brussels airport and metro attacks last year, officials said.

The four were among eight people arrested in a vast operation targeting suspected Islamic turbans carried out in conjunction with Belgian police in the northeastern region of Catalonia, Catalan police said.

"Four of those who were detained have links with people arrested for the attacks carried out at Brussels airport and metro," a front man for Catalonia's regional police force told AFP.

It is not clear if the four were directly involved in carrying out the Brussels attacks, the front man added.

Belgium has been on high alert since March 22 last year when jacket wallahs attacked Zaventem airport and Maalbeek metro station, killing 32 people and leaving more than 320 maimed.

The attacks were led by an Islamic State

According to The Local - Spain, four of those arrested were involved with organized crime groups and drug trafficking.

According to The Times of Israel, a ninth person, a Spaniard, was also arrested, and the investigation leading up to these arrests took eight months.

UC-Berkeley readies police as Ann Coulter plans to speak in public plaza on campus
Will there be symbolic arrests?
[WASHINGTONPOST] The University of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, at Berkeley is bracing for massive protests and potential violence in an open, public space known as Sproul Plaza after learning that conservative commentator Ann Coulter plans to give a speech there Thursday afternoon.

The state flagship university has become ground zero for an intense confrontation between the far left and the far right since Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s election in November, with some protesters trying to stop controversial speakers from appearing on campus and others objecting that such actions violate their right to free speech. Some of the festivities have devolved into riots, leaving the school and the city to struggle with how best to balance the free exchange of ideas with community safety.

In February -- and twice more since then -- masked protesters turned demonstrations over the boundary between free speech and hate speech into violent confrontations, setting fires, causing injuries and leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars of property damage in their wake.

"The character of that attack on campus was unprecedented," UC-Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said Tuesday.

Coulter’s choice of Sproul Plaza, site of the Free Speech Movement protests in the 1960s, is both symbolic and logistically challenging for the university because anyone can be there. Dirks said that for an inside event, the university would have metal detectors and other ways to search for weapons, but security will be much more difficult in a public outdoor space.

Managing Non-State Threats with Cumulative Deterrence
The change in name of ISIS’s flagship English language magazine from Dabiq to Rumiyah prompted media speculation about its significance. This article uses a mixed methods approach that integrates a qualitative social semiotic discourse analysis approach with quantitative methods of information visualisation to examine empirically changes in emphasis and approach in both magazines over time to determine whether the changes are ones of style or substance. The paper argues that, while ISIS has changed its strategic focus over time in response to its changing fortunes, the organisation’s underlying world view, values and ultimate aims remain consistent and unchanged.
Dabiq was supposed to be the site of a decisive Moslem victory in the Last Days. Since they got their asses handed to them at Dabiq (in northern Syria) they probably changed the name to Rumiyah (Rome) because having their asses handed to them there is still in the future. Just my opinion, and who the hell listens to me?

Somalia Executes Four It Says Were Al-Shabaab Fighters Behind 2016 Attack
[EWN.CO.ZA] - A military court in Somalia has executed four men it said were al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
Death Eaters who were behind a 2016 attack that killed 80 people, a military officer said on Tuesday.

The four men were executed in Baidoa, which lies about 245 km northwest of Mogadishu, on Monday. The same court executed on Tuesday a policeman who was accused of killing a civilian and wounding the victim's two sons, officials said.

"Yesterday, four Death Eaters who had been behind blasts were executed. More men accused of being al-Shabaab members will be executed today or tomorrow," Major Nur Aden, a military officer in Baidoa, told Rooters.

In Tuesday's execution, Ali Buubo Mohammed, a policeman, was shot by a firing squad after he was found guilty of killing Kassim Abdi and injuring his sons. He was sentenced to death last November.

Mumin Hussein Abdullahi, the deputy prosecutor of the court, confirmed that execution.

The four Death Eaters were found guilty of being responsible for twin blasts in Baidoa in February 2016, resulting in 80 deaths.

Hezbollah assassinates notorious Al-Qaeda booby trap chief near Lebanese border
[ALMASDARNEWS] According to Hezbollah’s media wing, an infamous jihadist commander of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), identified Abu Qassem al-Talleh, was killed by a roadside kaboom planted by the Lebanese paramilitary group outside his base Kharbet Youneen area in Juroud Arsal.

Ironically, Abu Qassem al-Talleh himself was known to be a mass producer of IED’s (improvised bombs) in the mountainous eastern Lebanese border region, frequently targeting government troops and Hezbollah during their patrols.

Although the jihadist car was virtually blown apart, the HTS chief’s assistant Abou Dujanah al-Lebnani somehow managed to survive the IED attack although he was said to be at death's door. Both held Lebanese passports but were wanted by the Lebanese government.

Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, who finished second in the voting, saw it as excellent news. The two will face off in the final round next month after the centrist Macron won 23 percent of the vote, 2 points ahead of Le Pen.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
St Petersburg bombing: Group says al-Qaeda chief ordered attack
[BBC] A little-known group claiming links to al-Qaeda has said it carried out the deadly metro bombing in St Petersburg earlier this month.

The Imam Shamil Battalion said the attack in the Russian city was carried out on the orders of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area assuming he's not dead like Mullah Omar. He lost major face when he ordered the nascent Islamic State to cease and desist and merge with the orthodx al-Qaeda spring, al-Nusra...

Its statement has been circulated by high-profile al-Qaeda supporters on the Telegram messaging app.

The attack in St Petersburg killed 16 people, including the jacket wallah.

Russian officials later said Akbarzhon Jalilov, a Russian citizen born in Kyrgyzstan, detonated a bomb between two metro stations in the city.

The Imam Shamil Battalion statement said the bombing was Dire Revenge for Russian military actions in Moslem countries such as Syria and Libya as well as the Moslem region of Chechnya in Russia's North Caucasus. More attacks were being planned, the statement said.
I'm guessing the Imam Shamil Battalion is named after Shamil Basaev, who thankfully remains dead.
The authenticity of the claim has not been independently verified.

It emerged in news outlets used by jihadists in Africa, including the Mauritania-based website Agence Nouakchott Info, but has not appeared on official al-Qaeda channels.

The Russian authorities have so far made no comment.

ISIS executes 3 in Anbar

Rawa (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants executed three civilians in western Anbar for acting as informants for Iraqi security forces, security sources were quoted saying Tuesday.

A firing squad shot the trio dead before a public gathering near popular market in the western IS-held town of Rawa for collaborating with security troops, according to sources within the Baghdad Operations command.

The sources added that militants prevented local citizens from removing the dead corpses from the street, also threatening whoever uses a cell phone.

Since taking over several Iraqi cities in 2014 to proclaim a so-called “Islamic Caliphate,” Islamic State militants reportedly tortured and enslaved civilians at areas under its control for violating its extreme religious rules, and executed many for either acting as informants for security services or attempting to escape “the land of the Caliphate” as the common charge reads.

Anbar’s western regions have been under Islamic State control since the group’s emergence, and thousands of civilians are said to be held as potential human shields, according to local officials.

Fighter jets from Iraqi and the allied U.S.-led coalition have occasionally pounded the extremist group’s locations in the province. There has not been an official campaign to retake those regions, but it is believed the Iraqi government will turn to Anbar and other provinces hosting IS pockets once it is done expelling the militants from Mosul, IS’s largest bastion in Iraq.

ISIS kills civilians cheering for Iraqi troops

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants disguised as Iraqi police members killed welcoming civilians in western Mosul’s Old City, Iraqi military media said on Tuesday, repeating blame for the extremist group for civilian deaths during battles running in the city since October.

The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said Islamic State members dressed as Federal Police personnel opened fire Monday at a number of civilians in the Old City who cheered their arrival. It said the deaths, which took place at areas under IS control, included children and women.

The media outlet did not specify the number of casualties or the exact location of the incident, but Iraqi generals have accused IS of using civilians as human shields and fabricating reports about security forces’ involvement in civilian casualties, Last month, the Pentagon said it was going to investigate reports that its fighter jets killed more than 200 civilians in Mosul al-Jadida district.

Iraqi government troops, backed by a U.S.-led international military coalition, recaptured eastern Mosul in January, and launched another campaign in February to retake the western region. Iraqi commanders recently claimed the recapture of 70 percent of the western region, saying IS was only controlling less than seven percent of Iraqi territory.

Measles surges among children in famine-threatened Somalia
One of the key disadvantages of being uncivilized, coming soon to the upscale anti-vaxxer enclave near you.
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Thousands of children have been infected by measles in famine-threatened Somalia, already hit by an epidemic of cholera, the U.N. children's agency UNICEF said on Tuesday, as it launched a campaign to vaccinate some 360,000 children in one month.

The United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
is racing to avoid a repeat of famine in the drought-hit Horn of African nation where more than 250,000 people died of starvation in 2011.

"We know only too well from the 2011 famine that measles, combined with malnutrition and displacement, is an especially lethal combination for children," Steven Lauwerier, UNICEF´s representative in Somalia, said in a statement.

"Among vaccine-preventable diseases, none is more deadly than measles."

Almost 5,700 cases of suspected measles have been reported across Somalia since the start of 2017, more than the total number of cases in 2016, it said.

Measles, a viral respiratory infection that spreads through air and contact with infected mucus and saliva, thrives in congested, unsanitary displacement camps, which have mushroomed across the country as people flee drought.

India-Pakistan
Pakistan hangs four militants
[Al Ahram] Pakistain on Tuesday hanged four turbans involved in attacks on civilians, police and troops after they were convicted by the country's controversial military courts, an army statement said.

It said the four, who were hanged at a prison in the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
, all belonged to the umbrella Death Eater group Tehrik-e-Taliban
...the Pashtun equiovalent of men...
Pakistain (TTP).

Pakistain's powerful army chief last week confirmed death sentences passed by military courts on 30 Death Eaters, some of whom were involved in the country's worst-ever murderous Moslem attack.

The assault on a school in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, saw Taliban gunnies slaughter more than 150 people, the majority of them children.

The military courts -- in which the army can try civilians on terror charges in secret, despite strong criticism from rights groups -- were established in the wake of the 2014 attack, which traumatised a country already grimly accustomed to atrocities.

They were seen as an "exceptional" short-term measure to give the government time to reform the criminal justice system as the military targeted turbans in the tribal areas of the northwest.

Security has dramatically improved since then. The law expired in January with the controversial tribunals having hanged 12 people and ordered the executions of 149 more.

But in February a fresh wave of Death Eater violence killed 130 people across the country. Shortly afterwards, parliament voted to extend the courts for another two years.

Figures earlier this month showed 161 executions have been ordered by the courts since they were created and 24 of them have been carried out -- not including Tuesday's hangings.

Hamas money launderer arrested
[ISRAELNATIONALNEWS] Izz al-Din Darab'i, an Arab resident of Hevron, was tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
in recent days by security forces at the Allenby crossing near Jericho.

Darabiyeh was arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle money for the Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", terrorist organization in Judea and Samaria, and was found with 10,000 Jordanian dinars ($14,000).

The Shin Bet noted that this arrest followed several other cases in which attempts to smuggle large sums of money and explosives to Hamas have been foiled in recent months by exploiting the humanitarian aid and relief ranted by the State of Israel to the Arab population in Judea, Samaria, and Gazoo.

"The security forces will continue to act to expose and thwart the intentions of the terrorist organizations to smuggle money and means intended for terrorist activity at the border crossings without harming the activity of the crossings and passing through them," the Shin Bet said.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Urban Turkeys Are Wreaking Havoc in Boston
[ATLASOBSCURA] Springtime in Boston means swan boats in the Public Gardens, bars blasting WEEI all night, and wild turkeys getting up in your face. Over the past couple of months, the birds have been making themselves known throughout the city, strutting down sidewalks, rushing at pets and people, and generally being hooligans.

It’s gotten so bad, the Boston Globe reports, that the Massachusetts Department of Fisheries and Wildlife has sent out an explanation to residents, along with some safety tips.

"March through May is breeding season for wild turkeys, which means some turkeys may be seen acting aggressively," the missive begins. In past years, Massachusetts turkeys have formed a gang in Foxborough, made life hell for a Cape Cod mailman, and forcibly attempted to attend Harvard University, among other locally relevant crimes.

Lovestruck turkeys may also "completely ignore the presence of people." This second strategy was likely in play on April 6th, when two of the birds crossed six lanes of rush-hour traffic on I-95, forcing cars to swerve around them.

Other times, they just act plain weird. Those turkeys that got caught two-stepping in a circle around a dead cat in early March? Boston turkeys. Experts are still a bit stumped by that one, but think they may have originally been trying to suss out what they saw as a predator, and then got distracted by their own dance.

They also like to charge at shiny things. If they’re attacking something of yours--a cycle of violence mirror; a buffed hubcap--it’s probably because they’re angry at their own reflection. This problem can be solved by covering the offending object.

And if it seems like they’re targeting you? "The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
s may attempt to dominate or attack people that they view as subordinates," the officials write. Best of luck with that, gentle Beantown soul.

#14  Not if you have a roo or bull bar. Pretty much every vehicle in Western Australia outside Perth has one.

Yup, took a buddy up to the place for one after he hit a Clydesdale, story for another time.

So. No sht there I was...just kidding. Once a future wife and I were returning from a weekend of good times with city friends. Last 20 minutes of a six hour drive; we could smell home. It is deer country, dusk so too dark to see anything but too bright for the lights to work, including seeing the retina reflections of critters. Dangerous section of road with a couple tight turns which throw a couple trucks off them each year, no shoulder, steep ditch. Get through all that and take a breath...and there in the evening shadows of a grove a trees is a deer in my lane. I get half-firm on the brakes (no anti-lock, never lock the brakes) to transfer some energy to the front tires. It is ass end to the left lane and I'm down from cruising to about 50mph so I take the left lane around it. No. It was two of them. Future wife wide eyes me "Did you see those two big...." I swerve right to avoid a deer in the left lane...then back left to avoid another deer in the right lane..no, three deer, then back into the correct lane. It was some Waylen Jennings voiceover stuff. Always easy on the brake to transfer that energy into my front tires, decelerated down to about 35mph by the time the maneuvers were completed. S'where the high speed driving class paid off. Only other time I've seen her eyes large enough to serve tea on was returning on a different trip, nasty weather all the way, again about 20 miles out, different road except for the shoulders, snow so hard I drove by looking low-right for the shoulder line to put my tire on, when like a flash in a horror movie a Princess Monanoke sized buck gets his whiskers brushed by my passenger-rear view mirror. You would have thought a spider had just crawled down future wife's sock.

Iraq
Mosul Offensive News

Iraqi troops capture Tenek

[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Iraqi forces retook full control of one the largest neighborhoods of west djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
Tuesday from the ISIS group after a week of intense fighting, a top commander said.

"This morning, the heroes of the Counter-Terrorism Service on the western axis succeeded in fully clearing Tenek neighborhood," Staff Lieutenant General Abdulwahab al-Saadi told AFP in Mosul.

The elite forces have been spearheading a massive offensive launched in mid-October 2016 to retake Mosul, the country’s second city and the last major Iraqi bastion of the terrorists’ now crumbling "caliphate".

The eastern side of the city, which is divided by the Tigris river, was recaptured in January, and a push on the west bank of Mosul launched the following month has made steady progress despite fierce resistance.

Tenek, on the western edge of the city, "is one of the largest neighborhoods on the western side of Mosul," said Saadi, one of the top CTS commanders in Iraq.

"It used to be one of the main strongholds for terrorist groups," he said.

Saadi said the fighting in Tenek was fierce and lasted a full week.

"More than 20 boom-mobiles were destroyed, dozens of terrorist faceless myrmidons were killed. Their bodies are still on the streets and inside houses," he said.

Only a few hundred ISIS fighters are believed to remain in west Mosul, most of them hunkering down in the Old City amidst several hundred thousand civilians.

Iraqi forces have retaken neighborhoods to the south, west and north of the Old City, tightening the noose around ISIS before a high-risk final assault.

Iraqi forces begin operation in al-Hadar

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Pro-Iraqi government troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Public Mobilization Units) have received several families fleeing east of Hadar region as operations started to free the region and the surrounding areas from Islamic State militants.

In statements on Tuesday, the troops media service declared liberating Hilala hill, north of Hadar, as well as Ain Sadid and al-Olwani villages in the south. Booby trapped vehicles were exploded at al-Salal village, near al-Hajaniya village, in the south, and near Heweidar village, at the outskirts of the region. A store of weapons was found in the north.

Iraqi troops, supported by PMUs, have launched military operations to drive IS fighters out of Hadar, located south of Mosul, DPA quoted the Iraqi official TV on Tuesday.

Number of remaining IS militants in Mosul was previously estimated by the U.S.-led coalition at less than 1000.

In February, Iraqi troops, backed by the international coalition and paramilitary troops, started an offensive to retake western Mosul from IS. Eastern Mosul was recaptured in January after three months of battles.

The group has sustained severe losses in personnel and ground since an offensive was launched in mid October to retake Mosul, the second-largest Iraqi city and the militants’ last urban stronghold in the country.

Iraqi forces capture 12 villages in Hadher region

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Ministry of Defense’s War Media Cell announced, on Tuesday, that security forces managed to liberate 12 villages in al-Hadher District, south of the city of Mosul.

The cell said in a statement that troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi, backed by Army Aviation, carried out an extensive operation to liberate al-Hadher District, and managed to liberate 12 villages so far.

The liberated villages are al-Musaltan, Albu Alwan, Dabsa, al-Kunayfis, Tal Halala, Tal Rajim, al-Athouri, al-Huwaider, Salal, Oliba, Oliba al-Sharkiyah and Oliba al-Gharbiyah, the statement added.

The security forces also raised the Iraqi flag over the buildings of these villages, after inflicting heavy human and material losses on the enemy, the statement further explained.

Earlier today, al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces announced launching an offensive, codenamed ‘Muhammed Rasoul Allah Operations’, to liberate al-Hadher District, and the surrounding areas, south of Mosul.

Southeast Asia
Abu Sayyaf beheads captive Philippine soldier
[Reuters] A Filipino soldier kidnapped last week in the southern Philippines by the Abu Sayyaf was found beheaded, the military said on Sunday, hours after Philippine soldiers killed three more members of the militant group in an encounter elsewhere.

The head of Sergeant Anni Siraji of the 32nd Infantry Battalion was found 50 meters away from his body in Patikul town in Sulu. Military spokesman Cirilito Sobejana said Siraji was probably abducted and executed because of his involvement in peace initiatives in Sulu. He said, "He is involved in peace efforts. He is not actually a combatant. We are using him to engage stakeholders because he is a Tausog (like most Abu Sayyaf militants)."

Earlier on Sunday, the military said troops had killed three more Abu Sayyaf militants on the resort island of Bohol where they were hiding after a failed attempt to kidnap tourists. The military was pursuing two or three more rebels still at large in Bohol, far to the north of their strongholds in the southern Philippines. Colonel Edgard Arevalo said, "We have reports indicating that they were also wounded and running out of supplies."

A group of about ten rebels infiltrated Bohol earlier this month. Six of them were killed in a clash on April 11 and one last week. Among those killed was their leader, who had been involved in the kidnap and execution of Canadian and German nationals in recent months.

Pakistan raises death toll to 14 in Taliban roadside bombing
[STARTRIBUNE] A roadside kaboom targeting a minivan in Pakistain's northwestern tribal region on Tuesday killed 14 people, a local official said, raising an earlier reported corpse count of nine killed. The attack was claimed by a breakaway Taliban

faction.

The blast destroyed the van travelling through a minority Shiite region of the Kurram tribal area, which borders Afghanistan, said Arif Khan, a tribal administration official in the town of Parachinar. The area has long been the scene of sectarian violence.

Five women and four children were among the 14 killed, while 10 people were maimed in the kaboom. With few adequate medical facilities in the area, a Mighty Pak Army helicopter evacuated the maimed to a nearby military hospital.

Jamat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway Taliban faction, said it was behind the attack on the Shiites.

Russia sez: After Its Nuclear Attack, the UK Would be 'Wiped Off the Face of the Earth'
[SOUTHAFRICATODAY.NET] On Monday, British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon confirmed that his Prime Minister Theresa May "is prepared to launch Trident in the most extreme circumstances", as a first strike attack, even if Britannia itself was not under nuclear attack.

The comments came during an interview with Britannia’s "Today" program on BBC Radio Four.

"In the most extreme circumstances we have made it very clear that you can’t rule out the use of nuclear weapons as a first strike," the UK’s defense chief said.

When asked in what circumstances, he replied: "They are better not specified or described, which would only give comfort to our enemies and make the deterrent less credible."

"The whole point about the deterrent is that you have got to leave uncertainty in the mind of anyone who might be thinking of using weapons against this country," Michael Fallon added.

The comments apparently come in response to the remarks of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn who signaled he would not launch attacks and could scrap the Trident deterrent.

Trident is the UK’s nuclear missile system designed as a deterrent to stop foreign powers attacking Britannia and its allies.

The name refers to the missiles which are carried by four Vanguard class submarines, which have up to eight nuclear warheads each.

Islamic State car bomb kills 4 tribesmen in Egypt's Sinai

They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jacket wallah attacked a tribal checkpoint in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Tuesday, killing four members of a powerful local tribe and wounding others, Egyptian security officials said.

They say the attacker, driving a car filled with explosives, struck a checkpoint near the town of Rafah that was manned by members of the Tarabeen tribe. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief news hounds.

Egyptian forces have been battling a growing insurgency in the northern Sinai for years, with local tribes mostly remaining on the sidelines.

The tribes have long resented the heavy-handed security crackdown in the region and relations with the Cairo government have been poor. Civilians in northern Sinai have had to endure violence as well as prolonged military curfews and diminished services. The rustics also fear the wrath of the murderous Moslems, who frequently kill alleged informants.

Clashes erupted last week between the forces of Evil and local tribes after IS fighters shot at a truck smuggling cigarettes into an area where the gunnies have banned tobacco. Earlier this month, forces of Evil kidnapped the head of another powerful tribe, El-Fawakhriya, and a prominent businessman from the tribe.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
60 teenagers involved in massive brawl at Florida mall; 5 people arrested
[NYDAILYNEWS] A vicious brawl, involving more than 50 teenage boys and girls, erupted at a Florida mall.

The disturbing video of the fight was shared on social media, featuring a large group of teens pummeling each other outside a Rue 21 clothing store inside Orange Park Mall. The Clay County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened Saturday.

In the footage, several people are seen punching a girl on a couch. Behind them another group is seen fighting as a woman appears to try and calm things down.

A third and fourth group of teens are also seen fighting in the background.

According to WJIXT, the sheriff's office said up to 60 people may have been involved in the brawl. So far five people, including three juveniles, have been tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
A 20-year-old was taken into custody for trespassing after a warning and for resisting an officer without violence. A juvenile female was arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer and trespassing without warning.

Three other people were also arrested and released back to their parents.

The mother of one of the teens arrested, told WJIXT that her daughter was at the mall with friends to see a movie when another group of kids started bullying them. The mom, who did want to be identified, alleges her child was the one seen in the video getting attacked on the couch.

"They were walking around the mall bullying my daughter and her friends. My daughter and friends (were) minding their own business and the adult and the other girls starting picking on them and saying stuff," the mother said. "The adult spit in my daughter's face."

Police are still investigating the scuffle and are using the videos to identify other people involved.
