(FUR YOUR EYES ONLY CIA) ‘implanted microphones into CATS' in a bizarre attempt to spy on Russia
Spooks were praised for their 'pioneering work' creating robo-cats in declassified docs

CIA spooks tried to spy on Soviet Russia using CATS implanted with microphones under their skin.

Declassified docs show how spy chiefs praised "pioneering" scientists for slitting open moggies and stitching in electronic hardware to uncover their enemies’ secrets.

Dubbed "Project Acoustic Kitty", the grim £10 million programme was developed over five years in the 1960s as a novel but gruesome new eavesdropping method.

A cat’s tail was used as an antenna and a wire travelled all the way up its spine connecting to a microphone in its ear, while a battery was housed in its chest.

But on its first test, its CIA handlers watched on in horror as their robo-kitty was run over and killed just seconds into the mission.

CIA insider Victor Maarcheti told The Atlantic: "There they were, sitting in the van and the cat was dead."

The robo-cat scheme -- which was never deployed to the field -- resurfaced after Wikileaks this week tweeted a link to the archive CIA memos, which were first unveiled in 2001.

Marchetti, a former CIA officer, told The Telegraph that year of the gruesome creation.

He said: "They slit the cat open, put batteries in him, wired him up."

"They made a monstrosity. They tested him and tested him", he added.

But the memo hails the "remarkable scientific achievement" reached by the American spy agency.

"The work done on this problem over the years reflects great credit on the personnel who guided it", the document concludes.

Wikileaks has been carrying out a series of staggered releases of hacked info revealing the CIA’s inner workings.

The Vault 7 project, slammed by the agency as giving ammo to terrorists, earlier unearthed what Wikileaks said was evidence the CIA could hack smart TVs to spy on targets.

#2  In the 1960s they wouldn't have anticipated cute cat vids would be the most popular thing online.

And at the time cats were popular in vision research, which mostly involved sticking electrodes in their brains. So this was not so bizzare in that context.

POTUS and the secret JFK assassination files
[Politico] The nation’s conspiracy-theorist-in-chief is facing a momentous decision. Will President Donald Trump allow the public to see a trove of thousands of long-secret government files about the event that, more than any other in modern American history, has fueled conspiracy theories ‐ the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy?

The answer must come within months. And, according to a new timeline offered by the National Archives, it could come within weeks.

Under the deadline set by a 1992 law, Trump has six months left to decide whether he will block the release of an estimated 3,600 files related to the assassination that are still under seal at the Archives. From what is known of the JFK documents, most come from the CIA and FBI, and a number may help resolve lingering questions about whether those agencies missed evidence of a conspiracy in Kennedy’s death. As with every earlier release of JFK assassination documents in the 53 years since shots rang out in Dealey Plaza in Dallas, it is virtually certain that some of the files will be seized on to support popular conspiracy theories about Kennedy’s murder; other documents are likely to undermine them.

Sgt Alexander Blackman, Royal Marine released from prison
[Telegraph] Royal Marine Alexander Blackman, also known as Marine A, was released from prison in the early hours of Friday.

The former Marine, who has served more than three years in prison for shooting dead an injured Taliban fighter in Afghanistan in 2011, was driven away from HMP Erlestoke, Wiltshire, at around 12.20am.

Blackman hid in the back of a black Audi estate vehicle as he was taken away.

The commando was jailed for life after he was convicted of murder in 2013. The conviction was quashed by the Court Martial Appeal Court and replaced with diminished responsibility manslaughter last month, following a high-profile campaign to free him.

Amazon revenue soars as cloud, retail businesses dominate
[Reuters] Amazon.com Inc's (AMZN.O) retail and cloud-computing sales rose in the first quarter, inching above Wall Street's expectations and sending the company's shares to an all-time high in extended trading.

The world's largest online retailer said on Thursday net sales rose 23 percent to $35.7 billion, just beating analysts' average estimate of $35.3 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

More fees from Amazon's Prime shopping club and media streaming services, along with growing advertising revenue, also boosted results.

Profit, which has traditionally been fleeting at a company that focused on growth, was also ahead of expectations. Net income rose 41 percent to $724 million, or $1.48 per share, marking the eighth straight quarter that the company posted a net profit. Analysts on average were expecting $1.12 per share.

Amazon's revenue has soared in recent years as shopping has moved online and businesses have moved their computing operations to the cloud, where Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the biggest player. AWS accounts for a majority of Amazon's operating profit.

Some investors worried that mounting competition from rival cloud providers like Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and price cuts at AWS would slow the company's momentum. Many also expected Amazon's staggering array of investments - from new warehouses, TV and movie production to research on artificial intelligence - to weigh on profits.

Policeman killed, two injured in North Sinai bombing
[AlAhram] A police officer was killed and two coppers were maimed Thursday afternoon when an improvised bomb detonated in North Sinai’s El-Arish city, al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Security sources told al-Ahram that unknown assailants planted the IED near the second precinct cop shoppe in El-Arish.

The bomb killed 51-year-old first lieutenant Ahmed El-Sayed Ahmed from Beni Suef governorate, and injured 46-year-old police corporal Ahmed Ali Ibrahim and 21-year-old conscript Mohammed Fatouh.

Egypt’s army and police forces have been battling for several years a holy warrior Islamist insurgency in North Sinai centered in the cities of El-Arish, Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid, with hundreds killed on both sides.

Israeli Patriot missiles down target over Golan Heights : Israel's army
[AlAhram] Israel's Patriot anti-aircraft missile system shot down an aerial target over the Golan Heights on Thursday, the Israeli military said.

Israeli media said residents in the northern Israeli town of Safed reported seeing two missiles being launched and of kabooms occurring afterwards. It was initially unclear whether the target, which media said was an unmanned drone, was shot down over Syria or Israeli-controlled territory.

The incident occurred hours after Syria accused Israel of striking a Lebanese Hezbollah guerrilla arms hub near Damascus airport, where supplies of weapons from Iran are sent regularly by air, a regional intelligence source said.

Cryogenically frozen brains will be 'woken up' and transplanted in donor bodies within three years, claims surgeon
[Telegraph] People who have had their brains cryogenically frozen could be 'woken up' within three years, a pioneering Italian surgeon has claimed.

Professor Sergio Canavero, Director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, is aiming to carry out the first human head transplant within 10 months and then wants to begin trials on brain transplants.

If the procedures are successful, he believes that frozen brains could be thawed and inserted into a donor body.

Hundreds of people who are dying or paralysed have had their bodies or brains cryogenically preserved in the hope that medical science will be able to bring them back to life and cure their conditions.

Although many experts are sceptical that huge organs like the brain can be thawed without damage, Prof Canavero said he believes the first frozen head could soon be resurrected.

US pushes for release of Americans in direct talks with Iran
[IsraelTimes] In first official contact since Trump took office, officials press Tehran to free Robert Levinson, Siamak Namazi and Baquer Namazi.

The Trump administration said American diplomats used a meeting with Iranian counterparts to press for the release of Americans detained in Iran.

It’s the first public acknowledgment of direct US-Iranian discussions since President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
took office.

State Department front man Mark Toner said the US was pushing for the return of Robert Levinson, a Jewish former FBI agent who vanished in Iran in 2007 and whom Iran has said it will help locate.

"Iran committed to cooperating with the United States in bringing Bob home and we call on Iran to fulfill this commitment," he said in a statement. "The United States remains unwavering in its efforts to return Bob to his family."

He also cited the detentions of Iranian-American businessman Siamak Namazi and his 81-year-old father, Baquer Namazi.

The two were convicted in October 2016 of "cooperating with the hostile American government" and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

"The United States is deeply concerned about reports of their declining health and well-being in detention," Toner said. "The United States urges Iran to immediately release Siamak and Baquer on humanitarian grounds."

Toner said the talks occurred on the sidelines of a meeting in Vienna this week focusing on implementation of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

According to the FBI, Levinson, 69, is the "longest-held hostage in American history."

Last month, his family pushed for a meeting with Trump over efforts to help locate him. At a campaign rally in 2015, Trump vowed to bring back Levinson. He also criticized the B.O. regime for not linking the Iranian nuclear deal to Levinson’s return.

Iran claims to not know the whereabouts of Levinson.

Levinson disappeared during a trip to Iran’s Kish Island on March 9, 2007. A 2013 News Agency that Dare Not be Named investigation found he was working for the CIA on an unauthorized intelligence-gathering mission to find information about Iran’s nuclear program. US officials have said they are no longer certain he remains in the country.

The 2013 AP investigation showed that in a breach of the most basic CIA rules, a team of analysts -- with no authority to run spy operations -- paid Levinson to gather intelligence from hotspots around the world, including the Middle East and Latin America.

The official story when Levinson disappeared was that he was in Iran on private business, either to investigate cigarette smuggling or to work on a book about Russian organized crime. It has a presence on Kish, a tourist island.

In fact, he was meeting a source, an American runaway, Dawud Salahuddin. He is wanted for killing a former Iranian diplomat in Maryland in 1980. In interviews, Salahuddin has admitted killing the diplomat.

The CIA paid Levinson’s family $2.5 million to preempt a revealing lawsuit, and the agency rewrote its rules restricting how analysts can work with outsiders. Three analysts who had been working with Levinson lost their jobs.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Now we learn a Federal Grand Jury Issued Subpoenas In Hillary Clinton Email Case
[Daily Caller] A federal grand jury provided FBI agents with subpoenas to inspect Hillary Clinton’s BlackBerry devices last year, court papers provided to Judicial Watch show.

According to the watchdog group, FBI counterintelligence official E.W. Priestap filed a sworn declaration stating that the FBI "obtained Grand Jury subpoenas related to the Blackberry e-mail accounts."

The subpoenas "produced no responsive materials, as the requested data was outside the retention time utilized by those providers," stated Priestap, who supervised the FBI’s investigation into Clinton’s potential mishandling of classified information as secretary of state.

Clinton used a private email server hooked up to her personal BlackBerries to send and receive business emails. Thousands of the messages contained classified information.

Priestap’s declaration is the first official acknowledgement that a grand jury was used in the Clinton email investigation. But the declaration raises new questions because of various reports stating that a grand jury never was convened as part of the probe.

It is unclear what other actions the grand jury took in the email investigation.

FBI Director James Comey ultimately announced on July 5 that he would not be recommending charges against Clinton for mishandling classified information.

Tom Fitton, Judicial Watch’s president, questions why the information about the grand jury is just now being disclosed to his group, which has filed numerous lawsuits against the State Department and other agencies for records about Clinton’s emails.

"The FBI convened a grand jury to investigate Hillary Clinton in 2016. Why is this information being released only now?" Fitton asked in a statement. "And it is disturbing that the State Department, Justice Department and FBI are still trying to protect Hillary Clinton. President Trump needs to clean house at all these agencies."

Five Thai rangers killed in well-planned ambush
[Bangkok Post] Five paramilitary rangers were killed and another badly injured in a roadside bomb explosion and the following attack on their patrol by gunmen wearing green outfits in Narathiwat province. The bomb went off on Thursday afternoon as a patrol vehicle carrying a ranger team was approaching Ringae village in Chanae district. Metal spikes were also found scattered over the road.

Police said the six-man patrol was on the way back to their base and went passed a group of ten armed men in green outfits, similar to border patrol police uniforms, walking along the road. When the patrol vehicle was just 100 meters beyond them, the bomb went off and those men opened fire at the rangers.

Before fleeing, the attackers took six M16 assault rifles from the dead and wounded rangers, and set alight the bodies of some of the slain rangers.

"I know that the power, size and weight of Hungary is much smaller than that of the financial speculator, George Soros, who is now attacking Hungary," Orbán said.

"Despite ruining the lives of millions of European with his financial speculations, being penalized in Hungary for speculations, and who is an openly admitted enemy of the euro, he is so highly praised that he is received by the EU’s top leaders," he said.

The Prime Minister’s address built upon comments he made in an Easter interview with Magyar Idők, in which he stated the motives behind Hungary’s diffidence toward George Soros.

Mostly white Southern city may secede from school district
[WAPO] A federal judge’s ruling this week that allows a predominantly white Alabama city to separate from its more diverse school district is stoking new debate about the fate of desegregation initiatives after decades of efforts to promote racial balance in public education.

Judge Madeline Haikala of the U.S. District Court in Birmingham ruled that the city of Gardendale’s effort to break away was motivated by race and sent messages of racial inferiority and exclusion that "assail the dignity of black schoolchildren."

She also found that Gardendale failed to meet its legal burden to prove that its separation would not hinder desegregation in Jefferson County, which has been struggling to integrate its schools since black parents first sued for an equal education for their children in the 1960s.

Still, Haikala ruled Monday that Gardendale may move forward with the secession, basing her decision in part on sympathy for some parents who want local control over schools and in part on concern for black students caught in the middle. The judge wrote that she feared they would bear the blame if she blocked the city’s bid.

U.W. Clemon, who represents black plaintiffs in the case, said the ruling undermines more than half a century of integration efforts. "If this decision stands, it will have a tremendous adverse impact," Clemon said.

Suspected US drone strike kills seven 'militants' in North Waziristan
[DAWN] A suspected US dronezap killed several Talibs in North Wazoo close to the Afghanistan border, one bad boy commander and intelligence sources said on Thursday, in a rare strike on Pak soil.

If confirmed, the air strike, which happened on Wednesday, would only be the second drone attack inside the nation since US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

Abdullah Wazirstani, front man for the North Waziristan Taliban
...Arabic for students...
, a group linked to the Tehrik-e-Taliban (TTP) Pakistain, said the strike killed three civilian 'labourers' and seven gunnies from the TTP.

Malik Waheedullah, a local tribal leader, told Rooters he saw two missiles strike a mountain home which caught fire. "I drove away as fast as I could," he said.

Rooters quoted one Pak intelligence official and government source who said they believed the strike to be a dronezap.

US officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

North Waziristan was a Taliban stronghold until 2014, when the Army launched a major offensive against the group and pushed many of its fighters across the border into Afghanistan.

Sources from the TTP identified one of the dead gunnies as Abdur Rahman, a senior commander of the group.

The Afghan Intelligence, National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS), said the turbans were operating in four different groups directly under the command of Quetta Council.

A statement by NDS said the turbans were appointed to carry out a series of attacks in Kandahar city.

The detained turbans have confessed that they were tasked with the murders, attack on civilian and military convoys belonging to the government, roadside kaboomings and other insurgency related activities, the statement added.

The anti-governemnt armed Death Eater groups have not commented regarding the report so far.

Kandahar is among the relatively calm provinces where the security situation had improved during the recent years but the anti-government armed Death Eater groups have increased their insurgency activities in some of its districts during the recent months.

This comes as a group of six turbans involved in major terrorist attacks were arrested by the provincial intelligence directorate operatives in Kandahar earlier this month.

According to the local officials, the group was planning and coordinating attacks on military bases, security check posts and logistics convoys and was also involved in the liquidation of the babus government employees, tribal elders and other influential figures in Kandahar.

Egypt is not willing to hand over Libyan fugitive Al-Tuhami to ICC
[Libya Observer] An Egyptian official predicted that his country will likely dismiss the International Criminal Court's appeal of handing over al-Tuhami Mohamned Khaled, former head of Internal Security Service in Qadaffy’s regime.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to London-based The New Arab, clarified that despite Egypt’s signing of the statute of ICC, known as Rome convention, in 2000, the Egyptian government is not obliged to implement the court’s decision because the signing of the statute is yet to be ratified by the Egyptian House of Representatives.

He said that Egypt felt itself to be under no legal compulsion towards ICC, but only a moral obligation, which seems not to be in its interest at present.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant against al-Tuhami on Monday for repressing regime opponents in 2011.

Al-Tuhami, born in the Janzour area of Libya in 1942, is said to have at least ten different passports - under a number of names and identities - and remains on the lam.

After the fall of Qadaffy, he fled to Egypt along with other senior regime figures including Qadaffy’s son Mohammed, his cousin Ahmed Qaddaf-Addam and his ambassador to Cairo Ali Maria.

According to the latest information, he is now a member of a political group named "Popular Front for the Liberation of Libya" along with other leading figures from the old regime.

North Korea vows to wipe out US and South Korea with '5million nuclear bombs' carried by children
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] Young supporters of Kim Jong Il are preparing to 'wipe out' the US and Korea with five million nuclear bombs, the head of the republic's youth league has said.

The chilling message from the Central Committee of the Kimilsungist-Kimjongilist Youth League warns that 'the Earth will break' if it launches an attack.

It promised to destroy the US and its South Korean neighbours if either shows 'a slight provocation,' as international tension reaches breaking point.

The warning came as South Korea announced on a high-altitude rocket system to be built on its own soil, giving allies the US powerful weaponry on the peninsula.

Veterans Affairs has 346 workers who do only union work
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] An estimated 346 employees in the Department of Veterans Affairs do no actual work for taxpayers. Instead, they spend all of their time doing work on behalf of their union while drawing a federal salary, a practice known as "official time."

That's according to a report by the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office. But exactly what those VA workers are doing and why so many are doing it is not clear. The VA doesn't track that, and the GAO report offers no clue.

Rep. Jody Arrington, R-Texas, a member of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, thinks the number on 100 percent official time may be much higher. He also notes that the 346 workers don't include those who spend most, not all, of their time doing union work.

"The lack of accountability at the VA when it comes to monitoring official time suggests it might be worse," said Arrington, who has introduced legislation that would require the department to track the use of official time, among other reforms.

Pointing to the waiting list scandals at the department, Arrington said the official time situation is reflective of the "broken culture at the heart of the VA" and adds, "I haven't heard one good, acceptable reason why the practice has continued."

The VA was not eager to discuss the matter with the Washington Examiner. After several days of inquiries, it responded with the following statement: "VA believes that the appropriate use of official time can be beneficial and in the public interest as stated in the Federal Service Labor-Relations Statute, which governs how executive branch agencies treat official time. VA takes the position that labor and management have a shared responsibility to ensure that official time is authorized and used appropriately. VA practices are in compliance with the Federal Service Labor-Relations Statute."

'Explosion' rocks McDonald's in France, prompting police to shut down roads
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] A reported kaboom hit a McDonald's in the French town of Grenoble on Thursday after a large device was spotted in a toilet.

Police closed roads surrounding the fast food restaurant to investigate the cause of the alleged blast, which happened at about 11.50am local time.

Police have not confirmed the 'explosive nature of the event', but a police insider suggested that the blast could have been the result of a big firecracker.

Police closed roads surrounding the McDonald's in the French town of Grenoble on Thursday after a reported bomb went off in one of the restaurant's bathrooms

It is believed that the alleged blast happened after employees on the ground floor saw flames on the second floor and alerted police, according to La Dauphine.

Thirty people had to be evacuated from the restaurant. There are no reported injuries.

The upstairs bathroom at the fast food restaurant was heavily damaged in the incident.

A bomb squad arrived at the scene to investigate the incident. French officials said other McDonald's restaurants in the area will also be investigated.

Authorities have asked people to avoid the area surrounding the McDonald's.

Hours after the incident, Cours Jean-Jaurès, one of the main roads in Grenoble and the location of the McDonald's, was re-opened to drivers.

Teenage terrorist, 19, who had 'ISIS' as his phone password
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] A teenage holy warrior is facing jail after planning to launch a nail-kaboom on an Elton John concert on the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Haroon Ali Syed, 19, pleaded guilty to researching targets including a concert by the singer in Hyde Park, as well as Buckingham Palace and Oxford Street.

He was said to be planning to carry out a kaboom 'on the scale of 7/7' and also spoke of attacking shoppers in central London.

But the plot was foiled after Syed contacted an undercover security services agent online and he was enjugged

When asked if his phone had a password, he replied: 'Yeah, I.S.I.S, you like that?'

It can now be revealed that Syed's older brother, Nadir, was convicted in 2015 of buying a 12-inch kitchen knife and plotting to behead a poppy seller. After his conviction he threatened to behead prison officers in Belmarsh jail.

Like his brother, he also had a terror-related phone code, 77911.

North Korea puts out new video showing the White House in crosshairs and carriers exploding
[WASHINGTONPOST] A North Korean propaganda outlet Thursday released a video clip showing a simulated attack on the White House and declaring that "the enemy to be destroyed is in our sights."

The video comes at a particularly tense time in relations between North Korea and the United States, with the Trump administration sending warships to the region in a show of force against Kim Pudge Jong-un

This week, North Korea conducted large-scale artillery drills, showing off conventional weaponry that can easily reach the South Korean capital, Seoul, the center of a metropolitan region that is home to about 25 million people.

President Trump, who has been urging China to apply pressure to North Korea and has warned that his administration will act if Beijing doesn’t, convened congressional politicians Wednesday to brief them on the "very grave threat" posed by Pyongyang.

Ehsanullah Ehsan’s confession
[DAWN] BEFORE the mysterious circumstances in which Jamaatul Ahrar
...A Pak Taliban splinter group that split off from the Mullah Fazlullah faction because it wasn't violent enough...
spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan
...formerly the front man for the Pak Taliban, now the lips and tongue of the Jamaatul Ahrar splinter group in Mohmand Agency...
came to be in jug of Pakistain’s security forces could be fully explained, a sensational new twist in the story has overtaken the previous unanswered questions. In what has now become a familiar and expertly produced mode of confession, portions of Ehsan’s videotaped confession have been made public by the ISPR and broadcast around the country. The self-confessed terrorist, who has grabbed credit on behalf of the Jamaatul Ahrar for some of the worst hard boy attacks in Pakistain, has alleged that in recent years Afghan and Indian intelligence agencies have supported and financed the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain and directed attacks inside Pakistain. The claim is neither new nor surprising and no serious observer of the region can believe it is without merit. The degree to which Afghan and Indian intelligence agencies may be supporting anti-Pakistain Death Eaters in their war against this country can be debated, but there is far too much circumstantial evidence, even without Ehsan’s allegations, to deny the link between Afghanistan, India and anti-Pakistain Death Eaters who have found sanctuary in Afghanistan.

What is troubling, however, is the centrality that the so-called foreign hand claims have been given in the portions of the confession that have been broadcast. It has the potential to undermine the hard-won recognition in recent years that the fight against militancy is a local fight against local enemies who subscribe to an ideology that was locally developed. After years of reluctance, the security establishment has been in recent times more willing to acknowledge past mistakes and recognise that the war Pakistain has been plunged in is against hard boy networks that were once patronised by the state itself. Indeed, in former army chief Gen Raheel Sharif
..Pak chief of army staff, meaning he pulls the strings on the Nawaz Sharif puppet to make it dance and sing and not do much at all....
’s and current army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa’s unequivocal statements that both Pakistain and Afghanistan suffer from terrorism and that Pakistain will not tolerate militancy and terrorism of any stripe or hue, hopes were raised that a regional approach to fighting religiously inspired militancy with common ideological roots would take shape. Pakistain should emphatically press its case with Afghanistan and India that support for anti-Pakistain militancy will not be tolerated. What the country’s leadership must not do is create fresh confusion about who the real enemy is and thereby inadvertently create some sympathy for the Pak Taliban as misguided and manipulated fighters.

As for Ehsanullah Ehsan, he must face justice. In no circumstances should an individual who brashly and with a great deal of pride grabbed credit for the slaughter of countless Paks ever be allowed to escape punishment. There are no conceivable circumstances, no tactical gains or operational information that Ehsan can offer to justify ever being a free man again.

Tehrik-e-Taliban: Pakistan using prisoner for propaganda
[Dhaka Tribune] The Taliban
...Arabic for students...
in Pakistain has accused the country’s premier intelligence service of using a notorious captured Death Eater leader to give the impression the group is being funded by foreign spy agencies to orchestrate attacks, a Death Eater front man said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!...
two Pak intelligence officials said Thursday an overnight US dronezap killed seven gunnies in a tribal region near the Afghan border, the first such strike since 2014.

Mohammad Khurasani, front man for Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain, commented late Wednesday after the Mighty Pak Army released a video of Death Eater Ahsanullah Ahsan. In the video, the ex-front man of the group said he surrendered to authorities after seeing his leaders receiving help from Indian and Afghan intelligence services to orchestrate attacks in Pakistain.

Nafees Zakaria, front man for Pakistain’s foreign ministry, said Thursday that Ahsan had laid down arms and revealed the role of foreign spy agencies in attacks in Pakistain.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
Khurasani said Pakistain’s Inter-Services Intelligence
...the Pak military intelligence agency that controls the military -- heads of ISI typically get promoted into the Chief of Army Staff position. It serves as a general command center for favored turban groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, tries to influence the politix of neighboring countries, and carries out a (usually) low-level war against India in Kashmir...
was using a "prisoner" for propaganda against the group. He refuted what he called ISI’s "childish" acts and "non-serious" claims of Ahsan.

Scores of attacks claimed by Ahsan in the past include the 2012 attack on teenage Nobel prize winner Malala Yousafzai
...a Pashtun blogger and advocate for girls' education from Mingora, in Swat. She is esteemed as an ambassador of international good will, even though she can't go home lest some fellow in a turban shoots her in the head again...

for her advocacy for women’s education.

Ahsan quit Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain in 2014 and joined the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar group. He was a senior figure in that group before his surrender to authorities. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar is behind dozens of attacks on civilians and Pakistain security agencies.

Mighty Pak Army officials have said that the head of the Pak Taliban, Mullah Fazalullah, has ordered scores of attacks, including the assault on Malala, and that he is hiding in Afghanistan.

Shahhussain Murtazawi, acting front man for Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani

He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
, said Afghanistan is in a war against terrorism and Kabul has never supported terrorism against others. Without naming Pakistain, he said Kabul expects other states not to allow their soil to be used to stage attacks against Afghanistan.

CNN: Federal probe of Fox News expands (Video)
[CNN] The U.S. Justice Department's investigation of Fox News has widened to include a second law enforcement agency.

Financial crimes experts from the United States Postal Inspection Service are now involved, according to four sources connected to the investigation.

Mail fraud and wire fraud cases are part of the USPIS purview.

Investigators from both the USPIS and the Justice Department have been conducting interviews in recent weeks -- including with some former Fox staffers -- to obtain more information about the network's managers and business practices, the sources said.

The existence of the federal investigation was revealed in February. At the time Fox News and its parent company 21st Century Fox said they had not been subpoenaed, but a spokeswoman said, "we have been in communication with the U.S. Attorney's office for months
...that sounds like a late Obama administration effort, for the purpose of harrassment of a long-hated opponent. But really, if they would only wait a year or two, the Murdoch sons are going to do their best to make the thing acceptable to their Manhattan friends unless Papa M. intervenes.
-- we have and will continue to cooperate on all inquiries with any interested authorities."

Contacted about this story, the Justice Department and the USPIS had no comment. 21st Century Fox also declined to comment.

In February the investigation was reported to be focusing on settlements made with women who alleged sexual harassment by former Fox News boss Roger Ailes, and questions about whether Fox had a duty to inform shareholders about the settlement payments.

The investigators have been asking "how the shareholder money was spent; who knew; and who should have known," one of the sources said.

gave his famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the group’s rule in Iraq and neighboring Syria.

4 districts left to capture in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi army said Thursday that only four districts of western Mosul were left to recapture from the Islamic State as government forces continue to clear the group’s last remaining entrenchments in the region.

Sabah al-Nuaman, a spokesperson of the army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service, said the forces had managed to take over “Daesh’s (Islamic State) core” by retaking al-Tenek district, where 500 militants were killed in security assaults.

He added that only four neighborhoods are between security forces and overall recapture of the western region of Mosul.

Iraqi government forces, backed by a U.S.-led international military coalition and paramilitary troops, recaptured eastern Mosul in January and launched another offensive in February to retake the west.

The coalition estimates the remaining IS fighters in Mosul by less than 1000, and Iraqi officials say the group currently controls less than seven percent of Iraqi territory.

The most remarkable military activity is currently focused around the ancient Old City region, the area from where IS supreme leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the establishment of the group in a famous sermon.

Government troops, backed by Popular Mobilization Units, also launched an offensive on Tuesday to retake al-Hadar region, west of the city, and recaptured several villages and an ancient area there since then.

Iraqi militias capture village in western Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Pro-Iraqi government troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi have declared liberating the cemetery in al-Hadar region as well as Tureitaa village in the north of the region, in western Mosul.

“The forces freed the cemetery in Hadar,” the media service of the paramilitary troops said on Thursday.

“The troops also liberated Tureitaa village in the northeast of Hadar,” the service added.

Earlier on Thursday, the troops advanced toward the center of Hadar to storm it.

The troops announced on Wednesday recapturing three villages of Im Kreiz, Ghanem al-Awwad and Harraj in al-Hadar.

The offensives, which entered its third day, resulted in retaking 17 villages and strategic areas as well as the archaeological area.

In the Old City, Federal Police announced the troops approach by 300 meters toward the Grand Nuri al-Kabir mosque, killing dozens of Islamic State militants.

Earlier this month, Iraqi troops claimed the recapture of 70 percent of the western region and that IS members were only in control over less than seven percent of territory in Iraq.

Eastern Mosul was retaken in January after three months of battles between Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led coalition and the paramilitary troops. A major offensive was launched in February to recapture the western side.

ISIS Big Turban dies in western Mosul airstrike

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State leader was killed on Thursday at al-Shefaa district while destroying an IS headquarters in western Mosul, the military intelligence service has declared.

The militant group has lost dozens of its leaders since the start of western Mosul operations.

Eastern Mosul was retaken in January after three months of battles between Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led coalition and the paramilitary troops. A major offensive was launched in February to recapture the western side.

Iraqi troops were said to be in control over 4000 kilometers of the city, according to the U.S. State Department last week.

Coalition officials had estimated the number of remaining IS militants in Mosul by less than 1000.

20 civilians die in western Iraq airstrikes

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Nineteen civilians were killed as international coalition jets bombarded the Islamic State militants in western Mosul, Middle East Online reported.

“Nineteen civilians were killed in an airstrike launched by the international coalition against al-Islah al-Zeraei district, in western Mosul, which is still controlled by IS,” Ahmed Elwan, an activist based in the freed regions in Mosul, quoted an anonymous military source as saying.

“The shelling fully destroyed two houses that were used by IS militants to target the Iraqi troops from their rooftops,” Elwan said adding the victims are still under debris.

In related news, “a civilian was killed, while three others were injured due to a missile attack launched by Iraqi troops against al-Zanjili region, in west of Mosul, still under IS control,” Elwan added.

No comments have been made yet by either the Iraqi troops or the coalition led by the U.S. regarding the two accidents.

Iraqi forces as well as the US-led international coalition have always been criticized due to the fall of hundreds of civilian casualties by air strikes and explosions in the last few days.

A major offensive was launched in February to retake the western side of Mosul. The eastern flank of the city was retaken in January after three months of battles.

Iraqi forces capture al-Hadar again

Iraqi forces on Thursday retook the town of Hadhar, southwest of Mosul, on the third day of an operation that saw them wrest back a nearby UNESCO-listed ancient city, a statement said.

Hashed al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization) paramilitary forces said they had flushed ISIL terrorist group out of Hadhar, which lies 120 kilometers (80 miles) from Mosul.

The top army commander coordinating the six-month-old offensive to retake the Mosul area from the terrorists, Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir Yarallah, said the “Hashed al-Shaabi forces fully liberated Hadhar town in record time.”

He was quoted in a statement from the Joint Operations Command as saying that the Iraqi flag was raised above key buildings in the town following a battle during which “heavy losses” were inflicted on the terrorists.

The Hashed forces, which are dominated by Iran-backed militia groups, had retaken the nearby archaeological site of Hadhar on Wednesday.

The ancient city is one of the heritage jewels of Iraq and was damaged by ISIL after they took over large parts of the country three years ago, although the extent of the destruction remains unclear.

Iraqi paramilitaries shut more Islamic State escape routes to Syria border
[Iraq News] Iraqi paramilitary units captured the northern province of Hatra on Thursday, cutting off several desert tracks used by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
to move between Iraq and Syria, the military.

The operations in Hatra are carried out by Popular Mobilisation, a coalition of mostly Iranian-trained militias of Shi’ite volunteers formed in 2014 after Islamic State, a hardline Sunni group, overran a third of Iraq.

The militias on Wednesday dislodged Islamic State from the ancient ruins of Hatra, which suffered great destruction under the holy warriors’ three-year rule, a military front man said.

Hatra, a city that flourished in the first century AD, lies 125 km (80 miles) south of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, where the holy warriors have been fighting off a U.S.-backed offensive since October.

The holy warriors are now surrounded in the northwestern part of Mosul, including the Old City and its landmark Grand al-Nuri Mosque from where their leader, His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
, declared in mid-2014 a caliphate also spanning parts of Syria.

Mosul is by far the largest city that had fallen to the holy warriors in both countries. The density of the population is slowing the advance of Iraqi forces.

Hatra is also located west of Hawija, a region north of Baghdad still under Islamic State control.

Popular Mobilisation, which operates with the approval of Iraq’s Shi’ite-led government, said on Tuesday the Hatra campaign aims at cutting off Islamic State’s routes between Hawija, Mosul and eastern Syria.

Iraq’s border region with Syria is a historic hotbed of the Sunni insurgency against the rule of the Shi’ite majority community, empowered after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003.

Trump 'absolutely' looking at breaking up 9th Circuit
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] President Trump said Wednesday that he has "absolutely" considered proposals that would split up the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, where judges have blocked two of his executive actions.

"Absolutely, I have," Trump said of considering 9th Circuit breakup proposals during a far-ranging interview with the Washington Examiner at the White House. "There are many people that want to break up the 9th Circuit. It's outrageous."

"Everybody immediately runs to the 9th Circuit. And we have a big country. We have lots of other locations. But they immediately run to the 9th Circuit. Because they know that's like, semi-automatic," Trump said.

His comments came one day after U.S. District Judge William Orrick temporarily blocked Trump's efforts to withhold funds from any municipality that refuses to cooperate with immigration enforcement officers. Orrick, based in the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
, argued that Trump had overstepped his authority in January when he directed the Justice Department to put immigration-related conditions on grants for so-called sanctuary cities that may not be directly related to law enforcement. The case, if appealed, would go before the 9th Circuit.

What today's fascists don't understand
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Howard Dean
Former Dem governor of Vermont or Rhode Island or one of those dinky states. Howard lost his bid to be president by shrieking and screaming and acting like a loon. Then they made him chairman of the Dem national campaign committee, where he continued doing the same things only nobody paid any attention....
thinks "hate speech" is not protected by the First Amendment. A New York University professor was given space in the New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
to deride the idea of "a blanket permission to say anything anybody thinks" and to defend protestors who, using violence, shut down a speech that was to be delivered recently by Charles Murray, the social scientist. A political science professor at Middlebury, the college where Murray was barracked, jostled, and threatened, apologized to the perpetrators for inviting Murray.

Justification of modern, left-wing fascism
...a political system developed in Italy symbolized by the Roman fasces -- thin reeds, each flimsy in itself but unbreakable when bound into a bundle. The word is nowadays thrown around by all sorts of people who have no idea what they're talking about...
and spineless capitulation in the face of it is becoming more common. The illiberal tide is rising. This isn't just a thing among wacky rich kids at colleges that aren't worth the fees they charge. No, a growing minority on the left argues against the principle of free speech and against the idea of open debate. They use bad law and bad philosophy for their arguments.

They would, without a doubt, gravely regret the consequences if they got their way, for the results would be pernicious.

Ann Coulter, the right-wing provocateur, was invited to speak at the University of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, Berkeley, recently, which infuriated campus holy warriors. Some of them protested and threatened massive disruption, at which the university caved in and canceled Coulter's speech. The censors -- they are thought police, the same ilk as book burners -- had won. They deployed the threat of violence to silence a voice that disagreed with them.

Former Vermont Governor and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean thought this was just fine. Citing a tasteless Ann Coulter joke about Timothy McVeigh blowing up the New York Times building, Dean wrote on Twitter "Hate speech is not protected by the first amendment."

Dean is an ass. He is flatly wrong, as every scholar of the First Amendment could show. Hate speech, crazy speech, idiotic speech, communist speech, fascist speech, racist speech, sexist speech -- they're all protected by the Constitution. Incitement to violence, speech actually urging people to attack others, is a rare exception to the freedom of speech. But joking that you wished someone were dead doesn't count as incitement.

Russian spy ship sinks near Bosporus
More on this story from yesterday. Pappy had commented, "Locale is known for heavy and somewhat free-for-all marine traffic, fog, and poor visibility as a result. Wonder if the Russians decided not to use their marine-band radio..." and except for radio use, we now know the answer.
[ArabNews] ISTANBUL: A Russian naval spy ship on Thursday sank in the Black Sea off Turkey’s coast after hitting a Togo-flagged vessel packed with livestock but all of its 78 crew were rescued by Turkish coast guards.

The Russian military said the Liman — a former research ship re-fitted as an intelligence vessel — had a hole ripped out of its hull in the early afternoon incident.

The collision took place in fog outside the northwestern entrance to the Bosphorus Strait, one of the world’s biggest shipping thoroughfares that passes through Istanbul into the Sea of Marmara.

The Turkish coast guard said in a statement that the collision involved the Togo-flagged vessel Youzarsif H which was carrying a cargo of livestock.

It said that of 78 Russian personnel on board the ship, 63 were rescued by the Turkish coast guard and the other 15 by the Youzarsif H itself.

They were then transferred to a Turkish military ship, it said, without giving further details. “All the personnel were evacuated,” it said.

Turkish media said the Youzarsif suffered minor damage and went on its way after the incident.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the ship had gone down and said the crew were safe and would be taken from a Turkish vessel back onto a Russian ship.

Turkish news agency Dogan said the area where the ships collided was shrouded in thick fog at the time, suggesting that the incident was accidental.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim spoke to his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev by phone over the incident, describing it as an accident and expressing his sadness, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

It was not known where the Liman was sailing from or its destination.

The ship was built as a hydrography research vessel in 1970 but turned into a spy ship in 1989 and armed with an Igla missile launcher, according to public records.

Russian warships have traveled frequently through the Bosphorus Strait to and from the Syrian coast, where a navy presence has been deployed to bolster Russia’s air campaign in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

In February, military sources told Russian media that the Liman would be observing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) Sea Shield exercise in the Black Sea.

Cem Devrim Yaylali, an Istanbul-based Turkish naval expert and editor of the Bosphorus Naval News website, said the Liman had previously been to the Syrian coast but it was not clear where it was headed on this occasion.

“A collision is not something that happens very frequently,” he told AFP.

He said the incident was an embarrassment for the Russian authorities as the Liman was likely carrying sensitive surveillance equipment that Moscow would want returned.

“I imagine there will be a salvage effort to raise the ship before anyone else sees it,” he said.

“If the ship cannot be salvaged then Russia surely will try to take away the sensitive equipment from on board by divers.”

Relations between Russia and Turkey hit their worst state since the Cold War in November 2015 when Turkish war planes shot down a Russian jet over the Syrian border.

Afghanistan
25 militants surrender in Herat province
At least 25 insurgents renounced violence in western Herat province and joined the peace process, local officials said on Wednesday.

The insurgents joined the peace process after a 20 day clash with the security forces in Balcheragh district of the province, provincial governor, Sayed Anwar Sadat said.

“They (insurgents) worked under the command of Mullah Paigul who also surrendered himself to security forces,” he said.

However, he did not provided more details.

Armed police swooped on terror suspect as he headed for Downing Street with bag packed with knives
[Telegraph] A suspected jihadist carrying a rucksack packed with knives was heading towards Downing Street when he was dramatically tossed in the slammer
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
by armed police, security sources have told The Telegraph.

It is understood that the suspect’s family had become concerned about his behaviour and reported him to the authorities several weeks ago. Investigators believe he was about to launch an attack.
The ’lone wolf’ suspect had been under close surveillance when counter-terrorism officers ordered his immediate detention as he came within 300 yards of the gates of the Prime Minister’s residence.
Update from the Daily Mail at 1:40 p.m. EDT:
Khalid Mohammed Omar Ali, 27, is a British citizen who was born abroad and grew up in Tottenham. He is said to have been part of a pro-Palestine convoy which took supplies and aid to the Gaza strip in 2010.
That would be George Galloway's Viva Palestina group that drove what was claimed to be $5 million of aid to Gaza via Syria and Egypt. Mr. Galloway was not among them, having made himself persona non grata in Egypt.

Four militants dead, two in custody as Operation Eagle Hunt ends
[Dhaka Tribune] Law enforcement officials concluded Operation Eagle Hunt on Thursday, after four turbans blew themselves up at the murderous Moslem hideout in Shibnagar village under Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj.

Rajshahi Range DIG Khurshid Hossain announced the successful completion of the operation during a press briefing at 6:45pm. He was accompanied by SWAT Deputy Commissioner Proloy Kumar Joarder and Chapainawabganj Police Superintendent Mujahidul Islam.

SWAT resumed the operation at 9:10am on Thursday, with gunfire and kabooms heard from the den almost immediately. Subsequently, a bomb disposal team arrived at the location at 10:30am.

At 1:08pm, law enforcement officials used megaphones to urge murderous Moslem Abu Ali to surrender, in the same manner as his family had done on Wednesday, but there was once again no response.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
Sumaiya Begum, suspected to be murderous Moslem Abu’s wife, left the building with a four-year-old girl, Sajida Khatun, at 5:30pm.

According to DIG Khurshid, law enforcement officials shot Sumaiya in the right leg before taking her into custody as they suspected she may have had explosives on her person. Sumaiya was taken to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital for treatment, where it was found that she was three months pregnant.

Gunfire and kabooms at the hideout continued until 6:30pm, at which point the operation was concluded and the building handed over to bomb disposal units.

The bodies of the turbans were recovered from the hideout at 8:30pm and taken to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital for post mortem examination.

Earlier, at 5:30am on Wednesday, CTTC officials cordoned off the building in Trimohoni, Shibnagar village, suspecting it to be a murderous Moslem hideout.

According to CTTC, police and locals, the owner of the building is Saidur Rahman alias Jentu Biswas. Abu Ali, 30, rented the building in February this year.

Abu, who is originally from Trimohoni in Shibnagar, was a madrasa student. After completing his studies, he took up trade as a spice vendor. During this time, he often conflicted with his parents, Afsar Ali and Fulsana Begum, regarding his overzealous religious ideologies.

Locals said his mother had claimed that Abu moved out of their home after one such disagreement.

They added that Abu rarely interacted with others outside of his set group of eight to ten friends. These men would often be seen praying together and were also in the habit of observing Eid in accordance with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Locals also alleged that two of Abu’s associates, Mahfuzur Rahman alias Mohon, 28, and Abdus Salam, 35, were tossed into the calaboose by police on Tuesday night.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Do You Have a License For that Monkey?
Imagine you told someone you were an accountant or an attorney as a way to explain that you had relevant expertise to a discussion, then got fined $500 for it. You'd probably be pretty livid. Especially if you went to law school or graduated with a degree in accounting.
So in Oregon if you don't have a license you can't even talk about a subject? The next step is a license to talk.
Yet that's what happened to Mats Järlström of Beaverton, Oregon, when he reached out to the state to talk about how the yellow lights at traffic signals weren't on for long enough and represented a risk to public safety.
Public safety be hanged! We have to protect our phony-baloney jobs!
This email resulted not with a meeting, but with a threat. The Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying responded with this dystopian message:
"ORS 672.020(1) prohibits the practice of engineering in Oregon without registration ... at a minimum, your use of the title 'electronics engineer' and the statement 'I'm an engineer' ... create violations."
I'm a Martian. Sue me.
In January of this year, Järlström was officially fined $500 by the state for the crime of "practicing engineering without being registered."
You need a license for that opinion! Off with his head!
Now, to be clear, Järlström wasn't seeking pay for his efforts. All of his research has been on his own time and he was simply presenting the information as a private citizen.
We don't take input from mere citizens, you must bring us a shrubbery!
However, he's been fined.
"Gimme yer dough!"
"Is this a holdup?"
"No, it's a fine!"

Occupational licensing laws exist, in theory, to protect the public from improperly trained individuals putting the public at risk. It's how we make sure doctors and structural engineers actually know what they're doing so people don't die.
That Latin phrase you're probably looking for is "ad absurdum."
Unfortunately, here it's being applied to a man who was trained as an electronics engineer, which means he's not presenting himself as anything other than what he is. Since he's not trying to seek monetary gain from his efforts--in other words, he's not trying to use engineering as an occupation--an occupational license is beyond ridiculous.
That's what I just said.
Järlström is now filing a lawsuit over the situation.
As well he should.
And yet, the engineering board in Oregon says he should not be free to publish or present his ideas. Tuesday, Järlström and the Institute for Justice sued the engineering board in federal court for Violating his First Amendment rights.
An organ grinder without a license is not an organ grinder, whether his monkey dances or not.
"Mats has a clear First Amendment right to talk about anything from taxes to traffic rights," Sam Gedge, an attorney for the Institute for Justice, told me. "It's an instance of a licensing board trying to suppress speech."
A farmer without a license couldn't sell his crop. I'm not even sure he could weed.
Järlström, for his part, said he never expected anything like this to happen when he moved to the United States from Sweden 20 years ago.
"Ya, shure, t'ings is gøøfy in Swëden, but here dere're different gøøfy."
I'm sure he didn't. However, here's hoping the courts step up and remind the engineering board that free speech is still free.

#2  There's no PE license available in Oregon for electronics engineer, just Electrical Engineer or Computer Engineer, so I'm not sure he's actually even legally misrepresenting himself. That said, we licensed PE's (mine's Civil) take misrepresenting or insinuating pretty seriously, even if it's not for financial gain. I think the Board here is off-target and should back off before the serious ridicule sets in
Posted by: Frank G || 04/28/2017 9:05 Comments || Top||

#3  He wouldn't be misrepresenting himself if his statement was that he 'was trained as an electronics engineer'. We don't know how the initial dialog went as they didn't publish his original communication, but it does not seem that he described himself appropriately or correctly.

I agree Frank, calling himself an 'engineer', 'electrical engineer', or 'electronics engineer' without the above 'trained as' caveat, would indeed be improper and/or illegal, depending on the jurisdiction.
Posted by: Mullah Richard || 04/28/2017 9:40 Comments || Top||

#4  A quick google reveals that only about 20% of engineers bother to get the Professional Engineer license, and the number is only that high because about 60% of civil engineers and those in related fields do so. The rest are no less engineers, and no less entitled to describe themselves so. They just cannot call themselves PEs, just like all those perfectly valid working accountants who are not CPAs. Likewise, while anyone can write a legally binding contract or will without a law degree, or represent himself in court -- going to law school merely increases the odds of not making dangerous mistakes -- but without passing the law exam he cannot call himself a lawyer.

This is idiotic.
Posted by: trailing wife || 04/28/2017 11:24 Comments || Top||

#5  It may seem to be, TW. The issue that many licensed engineers have with the non-licensees is the accountability.

We (in this part of the woods anyway) are required to carry personal 'Errors and Omissions' coverage, or have overall corporate coverage if considered an 'Engineering Firm', for our designs as part of the licensing criteria. Many (if not most) unlicensed folks around here don't carry it as it isn't cheap.

If you produce a bad design, you own it. There's little recourse by the affected parties and/or governing bodies for remediation and/or loss restitution other than civil forfeiture proceedings, which can be very costly and time consuming on the plaintiff's part.

Somali pirate sentenced to life over USS Ashland attack
[SHABELLENEWS] A 31-year-old Somali man was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for engaging in piracy and other offenses in connection with an attack on a U.S. Navy ship seven years ago, the U.S. Justice Department said.

Mohammed Farah, 31, of Somalia was sentenced on Wednesday to life in prison for his role in the attack, the Justice Department said in a statement.

Another five Somalis have already been tried and convicted for their roles in the attack and are serving prison terms, the Justice Department said.

The USS Ashland, a landing dock ship, was participating in anti-piracy operations off the coast of Djibouti in April 2010 when it came under fire from pirates in a skiff.

The Ashland fired two rounds at the skiff with a 25mm gun, setting it ablaze and forcing the pirates to abandon ship, the Navy said. The six pirates were rescued and later handed over to authorities.

A civilian was also killed in security forces firing on protesters who were demanding bodies of the two slain hard boys.

Srinagar based Defence front man, Lt Col Rajesh Kalia said that two snuffies were killed after they attacked an Army camp in the wee hours today at Panzgam village of Kupwara today. He said that three Army personnel including a senior officer were also killed in the attack.

Sources said that snuffies hurled grenades and fired indiscriminately on the Army personnel and stormed into Army camp at Panzgam village, which resulted in the injuries to at least five Army personnel

The injured troopers were airlifted to the Base Hospital for specialized treatment and three among the injured including a senior officer gave up the ghost.

Army’s Quick Reaction Team (QRT) bumped off two snuffies while third one managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

The slain have been identified as Captain Ayush Yadav, Subedar Bhoop Singh Gujjar and Naik Bhoota Venkata. The identity of the snuffies is being ascertained.

Col Joshi said that the snuffies tried to make their way towards the residential area in the camp. He, however, said that the troops engaged them and neutralised two of them and one of the snuffies managed to escape in injured condition. He said that his rifle has, however, been recovered and massive operation was launched to hunt him down. He said that 3 AK 47s, 9 magazines, 56 AK rounds, one UBGL, three UBGL grenades and three hand grenades were recovered from the encounter site.

Army fired on civilian protesters and one of the civilians identified as Mohammad Yusuf, 55, was struck down in his prime. He was hit by a bullet in neck. Soon after the killing of civilian, the protests which broke out in morning in Panzgam, Chowkibal and adjoining villages intensified.

Soon after the attack in the morning, locals of the Chowkibal and its adjoining villages clashed with security forces. Police had to use dozens of teargas shells and also resort to gun sex to disperse these protesters. The protesters were demanding bodies of the two snuffies for burial.

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti paid rich tributes to the officer and two jawans of the Army who were killed in an encounter.

She extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of slain soldiers. She has also expressed anguish over the death of a person in protests during the day in the area.

In a statement, Mehbooba Mufti said that an unending cycle of violence has got unleashed in our society which is devouring it and pushing Kashmire towards darkness.

She appealed the people to come forward in bringing this cycle of violence to an end and help the Government in its efforts of restoring normality and peace in the Valley.

The troops were working with partnered Afghan soldiers in the raid against IS Khorasan, a local offshoot of the Death Eater group based in Iraq and Syria.

"The fight against ISIS-K is important for the world, but sadly, it is not without sacrifice," said US Forces-Afghanistan chief General John Nicholson, using the military's name for IS Khorasan.

In mid-April, the US military earlier dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb it has ever used in combat, hitting IS positions in Nangarhar.

The deployment of the so-called Mother Of All Bombs (MOAB) killed at least 95 Death Eaters, according to the Afghan defence ministry, but fighting in the area has continued.

"Last night US forces along with some Afghan forces, conducted a night time operation in a village next to Assadkhail village (site of the MOAB)," the governor of Achin district, where the fighting took place, Ismail Shinwari, told AFP.

"They used helicopters to deploy forces and the sound of heavy fighting could be heard from the site. We don't know anything about possible American casualties, but as per our information, up to 40 IS fighters were killed in the operation," he added.

On Thursday evening IS claimed on its website to have repelled an attack conducted by American and Afghan forces and to have caused US casualties.

US Forces-Afghanistan did not immediately provide additional information ahead of notification of the dead troops' next of kin.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Fighting between Kurds and Turkish troops continue in Northern Syria
[ARA News] Clashes continued for the third consecutive day between Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Turkey’s military in several areas in northern Syria, military sources reported on Friday.

The Turkish Army bombed several villages in the Kurdish Afrin district, including Panerak, Shankila, Midan Akbas and Rajo.

“The Turkish artillery bombarded YPG security checkpoints and residential buildings in Afrin countryside, killing and wounding dozens, most of them civilians,” a spokesperson for the YPG told ARA News.

The bombardment led to clashes between the Kurdish units and Turkish military forces in the sub-districts of Rajo and Shiya.

“Our units responded to the Turkish offensive by hitting the positions of the Turkish troops near Susk hill in Afrin. At least three military vehicles were destroyed by YPG fire,” the Kurdish official said.

The YPG also released a video showing the destruction of a Turkish base in northwestern Aleppo.

“At least 17 Turkish soldiers were killed and three others were wounded under heavy bombardment by the YPG,” a member of the YPG media office in Afrin told ARA News.

The source added that the clashes between the YPG and Turkey’s military are still ongoing in the Shiya and Rajo sub-districts.

Clashes broke out on Wednesday between the Syrian Kurdish forces and Turkish troops after the latter targeted the Kurdish town of Derbassiye in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province with heavy artillery, shutting down the road between Derbassiye and Serikaniye. This coincided with similar clashes between the YPG and Turkish troops in Afrin.

This comes after the Turkish jets killed over 25 Kurdish fighters in Iraq and Syria on Tuesday.

The US-led coalition expressed concerns over the Turkish attacks against the Kurdish fighters who are in war with ISIS in northern Syria.

“We call on all forces to remain focused on the fight to defeat ISIS, which is the greatest threat to regional and worldwide peace, security,” said Air Force Col John L. Dorrian, Spokesman for the US-led coalition against ISIS.

“Turkish strikes were conducted without proper coordination with the Coalition or the Government of Iraq,” he said.

“Our partner forces have been killed by Turkey strike, they have made many sacrifices to defeat ISIS,” the American Colonel said. “We are troubled by Turkey airstrikes on SDF and Kurdish forces,” he added.

On Tuesday, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) called on the international community to intervene to stop the Turkish attacks.

“The regime in Turkey has consistently harmed the good neighborly relations through countless violations against our citizens and fighters in northern Syria,” the SDF said. “This was the most blatant attack of these crimes committed by the Turkish regime.”

“Therefore, we demand and appeal to the international community to intervene to put an end to this aggression and the ongoing violations on our territory,” the SDF concluded.

Pemra bans airing of terrorists' interviews
[DAWN] The Pakistain Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Thursday placed a ban on the broadcast of interviews of terrorists, a notification shared on the regulatory authority's Twitter page stated.

Geo News was slated to air an interview with former Tehrik-e-Taliban

Pakistain (TTP) spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan
...formerly the front man for the Pak Taliban, now the lips and tongue of the Jamaatul Ahrar splinter group in Mohmand Agency...
on Thursday night at 11pm.

According to the notification, a terrorist cannot be allowed to use any channel's platform to give an interview as it would undermine the efforts of Pakistain Army soldiers who have fought against krazed killer elements and laid down their lives for the country.

It further said that airing an interview 'of a known krazed killer' would be 'heart-wrenching and deeply disturbing' for the colleagues, family, and friends who have lost their loved ones in acts of terrorism in the country.

The fatwas were issued at the end of a three-day congress of female holy mans in the country with the world's biggest Moslem population.

The meeting in Cirebon on Java island, billed as the world's first major gathering of female Moslem holy mans, attracted hundreds of participants. Most were Indonesian but there were also holy mans from Pakistain, India and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
They issued a series of fatwas at the end of the gathering, the most eye-catching of which was aimed at tackling child marriage. It urged the government to raise the minimum legal age for women to marry to 18 from the current age of 16.

The United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
childrens' agency UNICEF defines child marriage as a formal marriage or informal union before age 18, and says women are most affected.

The problem is widespread in Indonesia, with one in four women marrying before 18, according to the agency.

Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, who attended the meeting, suggested authorities would examine the proposal: "I will take this recommendation to the government."

He also praised the gathering: "This congress succeeded in fighting for justice in the relationship between men and women."

Among the other fatwas issued was one against women being sexually abused; and one against environmental destruction, in a country that struggles every year with huge fires that are started illegally and devastate vast swathes of rainforest.

While the Ulema Council has issued rulings on environmental protection in the past, it tends to focus on religious topics such as edicts against blasphemy. It has rarely dealt with any issues affecting women.

18 die in Syrian airstrike in Idlib hospital
[ARA News] The Syrian regime’s air force on Thursday launched several airstrikes, targeting two main hospitals in the rebel-held Idlib province, activists reported.

The air raids targeted a hospital in Deir Sharqi town and another hospital located in the Maarzita, southern Idlib province.

“At least 18 civilians were killed due to the airstrikes, including several babies in incubators,” local media activist Ahmed Halwani told ARA News.

Also, at least five medical staff lost their lives during the airstrikes on Thursday.

“The raids caused a massive destruction in the buildings of the two targeted hospitals,” Halwani reported.

The source added that rescue teams continued searching for victims under the rubble until the midnight on Thursday.

Idlib province is regularly bombed by the Syrian and allied Russian air forces.

#2  It is one thing to have an aircraft carrier or two. It is quite another to develop the doctrine and skills to use them effectively. The US has 80 years experience doing that. True, the Chinese can study our lessons learned. However, putting them into practice will be long and painful.

#3  Sea battles from Midway to Leyte Gulf and onward demonstrate that without combined fleet defense coverage, even with control of the air, aircraft carriers frequently live up to the name "bomb magnet".
