North Korea 'deliberately detonated missile during failed weekend test because it was heading for RUSSIA'
Moved to Page 3
Oops
North Korea deliberately detonated a missile during its failed weekend test because the rocket was heading for Russia, it has been claimed.

Pyongyang test-fired a ballistic weapon on Saturday despite warnings from the US that failure to curb its nuclear and rocket trials could lead to 'catastrophic consequences'.

The missile travelled 30 miles before crashing down on an inland part of North Korea.

But it has since been claimed that Kim Jong-un's spooked officials deliberately exploded the KN-17 device shortly after launch fearing it had been fired towards Russia by accident.

Afghanistan
Pakistani army: Militant attack from Afghanistan repelled
[AP] ISLAMABAD (AP) -- Pakistan's army says it has repelled an attack by militants from across the border in Afghanistan that targeted two of its checkpoints, killing three of the attackers.

It says several militants were wounded as they fled back across the porous boundary. The army says Tuesday's incident took place in the South Waziristan tribal region, where the military has been conducting operations since mid-2014 to rout militants from the area

Islamabad alleges that Pakistani militants hide across the border in neighboring Afghanistan, from where they plot attacks inside Pakistan.

Kabul denies Pakistani allegations that it condones the militant sanctuaries.

Europe
U.S. issues travel alert for Europe, citing threat of terrorist attacks
The U.S. State Department issued a travel alert for Europe on Monday, saying U.S. citizens should be aware of a continued threat of terrorist attacks throughout the continent.

In the alert, the State Department cited recent incidents in France, Russia, Sweden and the United Kingdom and said Islamic State and al Qaeda "have the ability to plan and execute terrorist attacks in Europe."

The State Department's previous travel alert for Europe, issued ahead of the winter holiday season, expired in February. A State Department official said Monday's alert was not prompted by a specific threat, but rather recognition of the continuing risk of attacks especially ahead of the summer holidays. The alert expires on Sept. 1.

Malls, government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, airports and other locations are all possible targets for attacks, the State Department's alert said.

Overnight Energy: Trump open to gas tax increase
[The Hill] IS THE GAS TAX ON THE TABLE? President Trump on Monday floated raising the gasoline tax to pay for a roads and bridges improvement package, adding a new twist to the upcoming congressional debate over spending on infrastructure.

In an interview with Bloomberg News, Trump said he would "certainly consider" a gas tax hike "if we earmarked money toward the highways."

The gas tax last went up under President Clinton. There is little appetite among most conservatives for raising the gas tax now, though some Republicans have supported proposals to increase it, as many states have done.

Trump has made passing a $1 trillion infrastructure package a top priority for his first term in office. He is also pushing for an overhaul of the federal tax code, though he did not include a boosted gas tax in the proposal the White House released last week.

Not sure how the tax code and the budget are related, Mx. Journalist, but the boosted gas tax might reduce the deficit, which might save one of your progressive pet projects, at least for this year.

#5  Fuel taxes are generally cents per gallon, which helps keep revenue flow stable when prices are wildly fluctuating, but in a generally inflationary environment the tax revenue does not keep pace. What to do, what to do? Aha! A ratchet tax, set at percentage when prices are rising and cents per gallon when they are falling!

#6  Effective 1 November 2017, the California excise tax on gas goes to 30 cents per gallon, with another 9.8 cents sales tax on the total amount (yes. Sales tax on the underlying excise tax). This 12 cent per gallon increase was passed so the Peoples Republic of California could repair the existing roads that rival Guatemala for their condition. We were promised it would oh be for Two years and then would revert back to existing levels by Jerry, so I'm sure the Prez will exempt us from even higher gas prices. No really.....

#13  We don't have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem.

But if you want to discuss gas taxes, OK. Let's start by adding up all of the current taxes on fuel, then accounting for where that existing money is going. Let's publish that data so that every American knows how much he is paying and what he is getting for that money. If Americans still support raising the gas tax after that, then so be it.

Europe
Pope Francis: Europe Is in Danger of ‘Falling Apart'
[Breitbart] Every nation is free to vote for the political leaders it wants, said Pope Francis Saturday, while Europe itself is in danger of "falling apart."

"Every country is free to make the choices it believes are right for itself. I cannot judge if it is making this choice for this reason or another, because I do not know its internal politics," Francis said, in reference to the upcoming French presidential elections.

We must "respect people’s opinions, honest opinions of a political discussion," he said.

During the return flight from Egypt to Rome on Saturday, the Pope granted a press conference to the journalists aboard the papal flight, during which he was asked about the populist movements expanding in Europe.

Virginie Riva of the French group, "Radio Europe 1," made direct reference to the French presidential elections, claiming that French Catholics "are being forced to vote for either a populist or an extremist, and they are divided and confused." Late last month, a first round of elections reduced the list of presidential candidates to Marine Le Pen of the Front National party and Emmanuel Macron of the "En Marche!" party. The final, run-off vote will take place on May 7.

Francis confessed that "I do not understand French internal politics," but repeated the principle that every country is free to make the choices it believes are right for itself.

‘Out of control': Murder rate in Baltimore worst ever, Chicago paces record high
[RT] New crime numbers show the murder rate in Chicago is keeping up with the record set in 2016, while homicides in Baltimore have reached such alarming levels that the mayor is getting federal assistance and requesting more support from the FBI.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the city of Baltimore, Maryland, has experienced more than 100 murders before the end of April. After five people were killed last weekend, the total number of homicides in 2017 ticked up to 108, according to the Baltimore Sun. The last time the city experienced more murders by this point was 1993.

Since the population was greater in 1993, this year marks the city’s highest murder rate per capita ever, according to the Baltimore Sun. The murder rate in the city is up more than 30 percent compared to last year. Violent crime, shootings and robberies have also gone up by double-digit percentages from last year.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Report: Army Apt to 'Liberate' Lebanon's Outskirts from Militants
[AnNahar] The number of bully boyz spread out in some of Leb's outskirts have remarkably dwindled due to the army's measures, which makes any military operation to entirely liberate the outskirts much easier than before, al-Joumhouria daily reported on Monday.

Security and intelligence reports said the number of bad boy groups has decreased significantly because of the Lebanese army's siege, in addition to members who get killed as the result of army shelling. Reports have shown that no more than 500 bad boy fighters still exist on the outskirts which makes a military action against them much easier than before, said the daily.

A senior military source told the newspaper: "The army is studying its plans well and is ready for any confrontation, including the liberation of the outskirts. The political decision is available, but accurate calculations are made for any battle.

"The US permanent military aid for the army and the arrival of planes to the Riyaq airport give several indications. The Americans are ready to help us in any war to clean up the Islamic State

The source stressed that "Leb is part of the international coalition against the IS. The international community is helping us fight terrorism and it will backs us in any future battle."

The sources affirmed that the Lebanese army is fighting alone on Leb's soil and is ready to make more sacrifices to liberate any area on its land.

The two groups briefly overran the town of Arsal in August 2014 before being ousted by the army after days of deadly battles.

The retreating bully boyz kidnapped more than 30 troops and coppers of whom four have been executed and nine remain in the captivity of the IS group.

Gunmen kill 3 Egypt policemen in Cairo gun attack
[IsraelTimes] Unidentified gunnies attacked an Egyptian police convoy near the main ring road around Cairo, killing three officers and wounding five others, the interior ministry said early on Tuesday.

"Armed elements riding in two vehicles approached a moving security convoy" around 11:45 p.m. Monday, the ministry said in a statement.

The convoy was crossing a roundabout that intersects with the main ring road that surrounds the capital, separating New Cairo and newer real estate projects from the city.

Police returned fire at the attackers’ vehicles, which police were pursuing "in an effort to apprehend the perpetrators," the ministry said.

While no one grabbed credit for the attack, Egypt has been fighting an insurgency by a local affiliate of the Islamic State

Or it could be one of the fighting wings of the Muslim Brotherhood that formed last year. No doubt at some point the answer will be revealed.

The attack took place in the city's northeastern neighborhood of Nasr City.

Afghanistan
Winter Fighting Took Heavy Toll on Afghan Forces
[AnNahar] Afghan cops were killed at a "shockingly high" rate during what historically has been a winter lull in fighting against the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
, a US watchdog said in a report Monday.

According to the US government's Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), 807 troops from the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces died between January 1 and February 24.

"Afghanistan remains in the grip of a deadly war. Casualties suffered by (ANDSF) in the fight against the Taliban and other murderous Moslems continue to be shockingly high," the report noted.

Levels of violence have traditionally dipped over Afghanistan's cold winter months, but this year the Taliban continued to battle government forces, most successfully in a horrific April 19 attack on a military base outside the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif.

The massacre saw murderous Moslems armed with guns and suicide bombs slaughter at least 144 recruits, a US official told AFP, though multiple sources have claimed the toll was higher still.

The Afghan Taliban launched their "spring offensive" Friday, heralding fresh fighting the group said would include "conventional attacks, guerrilla warfare, complex martyrdom attacks (and) insider attacks."

According to SIGAR, 6,785 Afghan soldiers and coppers were killed between January 1 and November 12, 2016, with another 11,777 maimed.

The Afghan government has not provided US Forces-Afghanistan with data for the last seven weeks of that year, but even the partial numbers showed an increase of about 35 percent from all of 2015, when some 5,000 security forces were killed.

The SIGAR report also found that both Afghan government and Death Eater groups slightly increased the amount of territory they held, as the number of areas previously considered "contested" dropped.

Afghan forces now control 59.7 percent of the country, up from 57.2 percent the previous quarter.

The Taliban and other Death Eater groups meanwhile saw their areas of control or influence increase slightly from about 10 percent to 11.1 percent.

The US Congress created SIGAR to provide oversight into how the more than $100 billion appropriated for Afghan reconstruction has been spent since 2002.

Part of its remit is to compile quarterly reports providing snapshots of the country's progress -- or lack thereof -- and highlight ongoing challenges to the security situation.

The SIGAR report also points to a UN tally showing that civilian casualties in 2016 were the highest since the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan began recording them in 2009.

That count found conflict-related civilian casualties in Afghanistan rose to 11,418 in 2016, including 3,498 killed and 7,920 maimed.

French forces kill or capture 20 militant fighters near Mali-Burkina Faso border
[DW] In a weekend operation involving Arclight airstrikes, French forces have reported killing or capturing 20 jihadists hiding in a forest near the border between Mali and Burkino Faso. A French soldier had been killed last month.

A statement from the French regional force in Mali said the operation involved air and ground forces but it did not identify which myrmidon group had been attacked. Operation Barkhane is an ongoing anti-insurgent operation in Africa's Sahel semi-arid region.

The bandidos gunnies were targeted in a forest in the southwest of Gao province in an operation which began on Saturday, Colonel Patrik Steiger, a military front man told AFP on Sunday. The operation began with air strikes by Mirage 2000 jets on supply depots which had been located in an earlier operation.

The French "force has been engaged in an operation in which it was possible to neutralize about 20 bully boyz in the Foulsare forest near the border between Mali and Burkina Faso
...The country in west Africa that they put where Upper Volta used to be. Its capital is Oogadooga, or something like that. Its president is currently Blaise Compaoré, who took office in 1987 and will leave office feet first, one way or the other...
," Steiger said. Helicopters transported ground forces who had found weapons including rocket launchers and ammunition.

Steiger said the bandidos gunnies were either killed or captured, but he did not give further details.

The operation took place in an area where a French soldier had been killed on April 5. On Saturday, Mali's National Assembly voted to extend a state of emergency by six months in a bid to control an upsurge in attacks.

Operation Barkhane
There are 4,000 French soldiers deployed in the region since 2014 as part of Operation Barkhane, named after a crescent-shaped dune in the Sahara desert.

The French counterterrorism operation is being carried out in partnership with five countries and former colonies which span the Sahel: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger - collectively referred to as the "G5 Sahel."

French, Malian and UN forces are regular targets of attacks in the area.

On April 20, La Belle France "welcomed the establishment" of interim authorities responsible for the five regions of northern Mali.

Police Use Tear Gas to Disperse May Day Protests in Istanbul
[AnNahar] Turkish police on Monday used tear gas and plastic bullets to disperse protesters seeking to defy a ban and march to Istanbul's Taksim square to celebrate May Day, an AFP journalist reported.

Police tried to stop around 200 protesters in the Gayrettepe district on the European side of Istanbul who wanted to walk to the famous square in spite of the ban by city authorities.

The protesters -- made up of left-wing groups -- unfurled anti-government banners against the result of the April 16 referendum, which handed President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
expanded powers.

"Long Live May Day, No to dictator!" the banners read. At least one protester was detained, according to the AFP journalist.

Turkish authorities imposed a ban on any demonstration at Taksim square, with police sealing off the avenue with barricades and halting traffic.

Police detained two women who attempted to unfurl banners at the square, the private Dogan news agency reported.

At least 13 people who attempted to defy the ban on Taksim were detained, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

Members of the group were wearing May Day T-shirts and chanting slogans: "No to Taksim ban."

In the secular Istanbul district of Besiktas, at least 60 protesters were detained, an AFP photographer reported.

- 30,000 police in charge -
Some 30,000 police were on duty in Istanbul alone, with the governor's office urging citizens not to heed calls for protests in non-official areas.

Police checked tourists and citizens passing through Taksim and all streets leading to the square were cordoned off with iron barricades.

Metro lines did not stop at Taksim square, which was a rallying ground for May Day celebrations until 1977, when at least 34 people were killed during demonstrations.

Authorities later opened up the square for celebrations but it was shut down again after it played host to anti-government protests in 2013 targeting Erdogan, then prime minister.

"Our people were massacred on May Day in 1977, workers were massacred," a women protester who gave her name as Sevim told AFP.

"We are going to Taksim square because it is a meaningful place for the working class," she said shortly before the police intervention in Gayrettepe.

This year's May Day celebrations also come after the 'Yes' camp won last month's referendum with 51.41 percent of the vote against 48.59 percent for the 'No' camp.

The opposition have alleged major irregularities but its complaints were thrown out by the election commission and a top court.

Yunus Ozgur, another demonstrator, said he wanted to march to Taksim square to protest "irregularities" during the referendum.

"We are frustrated," he said. "Taksim has a political meaning. They (authorities) are scared of this. Taksim is ours."

In the meantime, several thousand people and unions attended celebrations in an officially sanctioned rally in the Bakirkoy district near the international airport on the city's western side.
The Times of Israel adds:
In a statement, Istanbul governor’s office said some illegal groups sought to rally around Taksim Square and elsewhere in the city by using May Day celebrations as a "pretext," adding that a total of 207 people were detained.

Police had also seized 40 Molotov cocktails, 17 hand grenades, 176 fireworks and seven masks.

And one citizen was killed in an accident when a TOMA, an armored water cannon truck designed for riot control, was doing maneuvering, it said.

could again bomb positions of the Syrian Kurdish forces of People’s Protection Units (YPG) any time it wanted, ARA News reported on Monday.

"We can come unexpectedly in the night... We are not going to tip off the terror groups and the Turkish Armed Forces could come at any moment," Erdogan said.

"Better they [YPG] live in fear than we have worries," the Turkish President said.

On April 25 at 02:00 hours, the YPG General Command’s headquarters based in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province was bombed by warplanes belonging to the Turkish government. The YPG Press Center, the command affiliated institutions, the Radio building and other points belonging to the Syrian Kurds were targeted as well.

"In this attack by the Turkish army, 20 of our comrades were killed and 18 of our comrades were maimed," the YPG front man said.

As a response to these actions by Turkish Armed Forces, the U.S. and Russia deployed their military units to the YPG-controlled areas near the Turkish border in order to prevent further attacks.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Cow falls from sky; Indian man injured
[Dhaka Tribune] A cow plummeted 70ft from a terrace and crushed a man in Kolkata, injuring the unfortunate man but losing his own bovine life in the process.

Forty three-year-old Abdul Mannan from Kolkata, West Bengal started Sunday morning like every other day. He walked to the local market at Masjid Bari Lane in Tiljala to buy fresh vegetables and other essentials for his family.

At around 8am, as he was checking out cucumbers at a roadside shop, however, his day took a turn for the worse. From the skies above, something heavy fell on him, causing him to collapse on the road.

Injured and fast losing consciousness, Mannan still managed to catch a glimpse of what hit him: an 85kg calf.

Locals and bystanders quickly whisked him off to a private nursing home, from where he was later shifted to a public hospital.

The cow, a six-month-old, which had dropped some 70ft, unfortunately was struck down in his prime. Though Mannan survived, he now has a fracture on his left leg, cracks in a rib and wounds on the back of his head, as well as multiple injuries all over his body that required as many as 18 stitches.

Much as it looked like it was raining cows, the reality was simple enough to explain. For the past week, the calf had been kept captive on the terrace of a nearby four-storey building by one of the building’s tenants.
That's one way to ensure a steady supply of dried dung for the cook stove.

President Ghani signs decree to release over 70 prisoners of Hezb-e-Islami
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
has signed a decree for the release of the first batch of Hezb-e-Islam prisoners.
If Hek remains true to form, he'll find some grounds to break his agreement.
The first batch of the prisoners to be released from the jails will include over 70 inmates.

The officials in ARG Palace said last month that the release of Hezb-e-Islami prisoners will kick off as the per the peace agreement and with the return of the party’s leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani also chaired the National Security Council meeting late in February and instructed the relevant authorities to take immediate steps in implementation of the peace deal with Hezb-e-Islami.

The peace agreement between Hezb-e-Islami and the Afghan government was signed in September last year, months after negotiations between the Afghan High Peace Council and the Hezb-e-Islami delegation.

The release of the prisoners of Hezb-e-Islami from the jails was one of the main conditions of the peace agreement between the two sides.

The conclusion of peace agreement resulted into the exclusion of Hekmatyar’s name from the United Nations

Al-Shabab suspect nabbed at UK Parliament Square

terror group.

It was revealed by MailOnline that Khalid Mohammed Omar Ali was an aid worker who had travelled in a relief convoy to Gazoo.

But now it has emerged that jihadi Thomas Evans was also in the group who travelled there from London with the charity Road to Hope in 2010, according to reports.

Evans was shot in Kenya while fighting for the African terrorist group al-Shabaab in 2015.

Whitehall terror suspect Khalid Mohammed Omar Ali, pictured left, was on the same trip to Gazoo in 2010 as jihadi Thomas Evans, pictured right, according to reports.

He had been linked to the world’s most wanted woman ‐ ’White Widow’ Samantha Lewthwaite ‐ over an attack that left 50 innocent villagers dead in the Kenyan countryside in June 2014.

His mother told The Sunday Telegraph that she believes her son was radicalised on the aid trip which saw the pair stuck in Libya.

Sally Evans ‐ who reported her son to the authorities following the journey to Gazoo ‐ said: ’After he returned from that trip he began interpreting Islam more strongly. He was upset about he had seen there.

’He was already a Moslem but he became more radicalised on his return. I do feel that was the case.

’It needs to be investigated. I’m shocked they were both on the same trip.’

In footage of the convoy, Ali can be seen with a Paleostine banner tied round his head.

Footage from 2010 shows a young Khalid Mohammed Omar Ali ‐ now 27 ‐ sitting excitedly in the front of his van as he prepares to drive from London to Gazoo.

I'm not sure who this highly touted bit of flimflam is intended to convince.
[IsraelTimes] Policy document, rejected by Israel as a bid to ’fool the world,’ calls for the ’complete liberation of Paleostine, from the river to the sea’.

In a bid to improve its flagging international standing, the Paleostinian terror group Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", unveiled Monday a new policy document that presents softened language on Israel while still implicitly calling for its destruction.

The document accepts the idea of a Paleostinian state in territories occupied by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967 but dismisses the establishment of the State of Israel as "illegal," asserting a Paleostinian claim to the entire land of Israel, and a right of return for all descendants of refugees.

Pak troops sneak-in on LoC, kill two soldiers; mutilate bodies
[Daily Excelsior] Pak Special Forces, known by the name of Border Action Teams (BATs) today carried out most dastardly and cruel act after sneaking about 400 to 500 meters inside the Indian territory across the border fencing along Line of Control (LoC) in Nangi Tekri area of Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch district and martyred two soldiers of Army and BSF.

Army vowed retaliation saying it will hit back and hit back very strongly to give "appropriate and adequate" response to most cowardly acted committed by Pak troops. The BAT attack by Pakistain Special Forces came just a day after Pakistain army chief Qawar Javed Bajwa visited LoC in Pakistain Indian Kashmiree (PoK) including the areas across twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch.

Soon after the report of martyrdom of two soldiers and mutilation of their bodies came, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval spoke to Army and BSF officers to review situation prevailing along the borders with Pakistain.

Singh also reviewed overall security situation of Jammu and Kashmire with top security and Home Ministry officials.

Official sources told the Excelsior that Army and BSF have been given free hand to teach Pakistain army a lesson for their dastardly act of killing the Army and BSF soldiers and mutilating their bodies. Army has vowed to retaliate saying it will take strong action against Pak troops for their unsoldierly act.

Head Constable of BSF Prem Sagar, a resident of Tokampur, Deoria in Uttar Pradesh and Naib Subedar Paramjeet Singh of 22 Sikh attained martyrdom in the BAT attack while Rajinder Singh, a BSF constable, was injured. The injured jawan has been hospitalized and was responding to the treatment.

Sources said the Pak Special Forces team sneaked 400 to 500 meters inside the LoC at Nangi Tekri in Krishna Ghati sector of the LoC in Poonch district this morning under the cover of rocket launchers and automatic weapons firing from Pakistain side.

The attack was carried out by the Border Action Team (BAT), which comprised the Special Forces. The BAT team had set up an ambush to target the patrol party of the Indian soldiers while the Pakistain army engaged two Indian Forward Defence Locations (FDL) with rockets and mortar bombs.

"It was a pre-planned operation of the Pakistain army. They had pushed in BAT teams over 400 meters deep inside Indian territory and set up ambushes for a long period to carry out the attack," sources said.

"The Mighty Pak Army posts attacked two FDL posts with rockets and mortar bombs at 8.30 am and engaged them," sources said.

"Their target was a 7 to 8-member patrol party, which had come out of the post," sources said but added that since the posts were engaged, the patrol party men ran here and there. Two members of the patrol party, who were left behind, were attacked by the BAT team and killed. Their bodies were badly mutilated.

PTI quoted an Army official as saying that bodies of two soldiers had been beheaded.

There were reports that the Indian Army patrol, whose two members had their heads chopped off by Pak special forces today, might just have walked into a death trap laid by the enemy, official sources said.

The incident in Krishna Ghati sector along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmire occurred when a joint team of the Army and BSF had gone to check the veracity of an intelligence report that landmines had been planted by Pak troops on the Indian side.

As they were looking for landmines, the patrol was taken by surprise by Pakistain’s Border Action Team (BAT) which had laid an ambush over 250 metres deep inside the Indian territory.

While the Pak troops attacked two forward posts with rockets and mortar bombs, the BAT personnel lay in wait for their targets. The Indian Army patrol too came under fusillade of gunfire, resulting in the death of two soldiers.

The BAT personnel quickly moved in and beheaded two fallen soldiers, official sources said in New Delhi.

It was still not known if landmines had indeed been planted in the area.

K K Sharma, the Director General of BSF, one of whose personnel was killed in the attack and decapitated, met Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi and briefed him on the incident.

As per reports, at 8.30 am, Mighty Pak Army’s 647 Mujahid Battalion targeted India’s forward post ’Kirpan’ from its post ’Pimple’ in Krishna Ghati sector. It was followed by attack on another forward post in the sControlame area.

"They attacked with rockets a forward BSF post (which lies) ahead of the fencing and opened heavy fire from automatic weapons. They violated the ceasefire," sources said.

"It was an attack directly hitting a post (listening post)", they added.

The BAT is specifically employed for trans-LoC action.

In Pakistain, the SSG (Special Services Group) formed the core of BAT. Its primary task is to dominate the LoC by carrying out disruptive actions in the form of surreptitious raids.

There have been several BAT attacks in the past in which jawans have been beheaded or their bodies mutilated.

Sources said bodies of the two martyr soldiers have been shifted to their headquarters and will be flown to their native towns tomorrow morning with full military honours.

Sources pointed out that the forward post targeted by Pak Special Forces was about 400 meters ahead of border fencing and the area was filled with sense bushes and trees, where visibility is confined to only few meters. Therefore, they said, the security personnel couldn’t assess movement of the troops immediately and were trapped. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...

ISPR denies Indian claim of two soldiers killed, mutilated by Pak Army in LoC attack

Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday refuted Indian army claims that Pak soldiers had killed two members of an Indian army patrol on the Line of Control (LoC) and mutilated their bodies, saying Pak soldiers would never disrespect another soldier, even if they were Indian.

"Pakistain Army did not commit any ceasefire violation on the LoC or a BAT action in Buttal sector as alleged by India," said the ISPR statement.

BAT refers to 'Border Action Team'.

"Indian blame of mutilating Indian soldiers' bodies are also false," added the ISPR statement.

"Pakistain Army is a highly professional force and shall never disrespect a soldier even Indian," the ISPR statement said in response to the allegations.

The Indian Army had earlier claimed that Pak forces fired rockets and mortars at two Indian posts along the LoC.

"In a unsoldierly act by the Pakistain Army the bodies of two of our soldiers in the patrol were mutilated," the Indian Army claimed in a statement, adding that the "despicable act will be appropriately responded".

90 insurgents killed as Jaish Al-Islam storms rival Islamist stronghold in rural Damascus

...Liwa al-Islam (Brigade of Islam) was established by Zahran Alloush, the son of Saudi-based religious scholar Abdullah Mohammed Alloush, after Syrian authorities released him from prison in mid-2011 where he had been serving time for his Salafist activism. The group claimed responsibility for carrying out the July 2012 Damascus bombing that killed Defense Minister Dawoud Rajiha, Deputy Defense Minister Asef Shawkat, and Assistant Vice President Hassan Turkmani. It was a driving force behind actions in the Damascus region. It cooperated and conducted joint operations with al-Nusra. Utilizing heavy weaponry and tanks, Jaish al-Islam entered the northeastern part of the FSA stronghold and engaged Failaq al-Rahman who subsequently called upon Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) to stiffen their defenses.

With HTS reinforcements flooding into the town, heavy festivities erupted in Zamalka especially in the evening hours.

So far, at least 90 rebel fighters have been killed in the infighting that began last week, 32 of whom were from Jaish al-Islam.

Meanwhile,

Iraq
Army say killed 30 IS members at Anbar-Salahuddin borders
[Iraq News] Iraqi army commanders said army forces killed 30 Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
members and took over a command center on the borders between Anbar and Salahuddin provinces.

A source at the Anbar army command told Alsumaria news that a force from the army’s 7th division, backed by fighter jets and paramilitary forces, killed 30 IS members during an operation at the Malha desert region.

The source said a communication facility and two booby-trapped vehicles were also destroyed in the assault.

Borders conjoining Anbar, Salahuddin and Diyala have witnessed occasional attacks by Islamic State against government and paramilitary troops deployments since Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and PMus, launched a major offensive to retake areas occupied by IS since 2014, most notably the city of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, Iraq’s second largest city and the group’s most important stronghold in the country.

Observers have said Islamic State’s occasional attacks against security and civilians outside Mosul aimed at distracting security attention from the Mosul front. IS still holds a few areas in Salahuddin, Diyala, Anbar and Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
but the Iraqi government, employing most of its military power in the Mosul campaign, is expected to aim at those strongholds once the battle in Mosul realizes victory.

Police break up pro-hunger strike protest at Jerusalem’s Old City
[IsraelTimes] Woman tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
at Damascus Gate rally in solidarity with Paleostinian prisoners; Israeli official says number of hunger.

A protest in support of Paleostinian inmates on hunger strike was broken up by police at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City Monday.

Protesters showed up at Damascus Gate wearing shirts bearing images of Paleostinian prisoners as part of an "attempt to carry out a deliberate provocation," police spokeswoman Luba Samri said. Police at the scene declared the protest an illegal demonstration and ordered the participants to disperse.

A video from the scene showed about 100 people at the protest.

One female resident of East Jerusalem was arrested for disorderly conduct and failing to listen to police instructions, while the rest of the protesters left the area in accordance with police instructions, Samri said.

Paleostinian officials say some 1,500 prisoners are participating in the hunger strike that began on April 17, with detainees ingesting only water and salt. Israel Prison Service front man Assaf Librati said on Monday that 870 prisoners are still refusing to eat.

Librati did not elaborate on why over 400 prisoners had quit the strike. He said the strikers are held in separate wings, monitored by medical staff. He said several are held in isolation.

Support for the strike has gained momentum with West Bank marches and a social media campaign showing celebrities in the Arab world drinking salty water in solidarity.

The hunger-strikers, led by convicted terrorist and popular Paleostinian figure Marwan Barghouti, who is serving five life terms for his role in deadly attacks, have become a cause celebre, with near daily demonstrations in support of them.

On Sunday night, festivities erupted near Nablus as Israeli troops broke up a sit-in in support of the strikers, according to the Paleostinian Ma’an news agency.

While some demonstrations in the West Bank have turned violent, those in Jerusalem have been mostly calm. On Saturday, police dispersed dozens of protesters in Jerusalem’s Old City who demonstrated in support of the striking prisoners. The protesters held pictures of prisoners and attempted to march to the Damascus Gate, but were blocked by Israeli authorities.

Some 6,500 Paleostinians are currently detained by Israel for a range of terror offenses and crimes. Around 500 are being held under Israel’s system of administrative detention, which allows for imprisonment without charge.

Paleostinian prisoners have mounted repeated hunger strikes, but rarely on such a scale.

Among the demands made by Barghouti and fellow prisoners are the resumption of a second monthly visit by family members (a benefit that was canceled by the International Committee of the Red Thingy last year due to budget cuts), the prevention of family meetings being canceled for security reasons, extending the length of each visit from 45 minutes to an hour and a half, and the restoration of academic studies and matriculation exams for prisoners. Other demands include more television channels being available in cells and the installation of public telephones in security wings.

Barghouti is popular among Paleostinians, with polls suggesting he could win the Paleostinian presidency. Many Israeli and Paleostinian analysts have speculated that Barghouti organized the strike in a bid to boost his declining power in Paleostinian politics.

Five coppers including an Assistant Sub-Inspector and two JK Bank officials were killed in the deadly attack and bandidos gunnies decamped with 4 riles of the cops.

The slain coppers have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Bashir Ahmad Dar (100/GRP) son of Abdul Gani Dar of Bonigam Qazigund, Farooq Ahmad Bhat (No. 332/KGM) son of Abdul Aziz of Nehama D.H.Pora, Mohammad Qasim (No. 638/KGM) son of Bohu Khan of Awoora Trehgam Kupwara, Muzafar Ahmad (No. 1090/KGM) son of Gul Mohammad Bhat of Y.K.Pora Qazigund, and Ishfaq Ahmad Hajam (No. 745/KGM) son of Abdul Ahad Hajam of Zakoora Batpora Srinagar. The two Security Guards of J&K Bank have been identified as Javaid Ahmad Bhat of Vessu Batpora Kulgam and Muzafar Ahmad Laway of Largoo D.H. Pora Kulgam.

The bandidos gunnies fled away after carrying out the attack leaving the cops and bank officials in a pool of blood. Soon after the incident, a joint team of Army, SOG and CRPF reached the spot and have launched a massive man hunt against the assailants.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmire SJM Gillani said that the incident happened at around 4:15 pm at Pombai in Kulgam. "The cash van was returning to Kulgam from Manzgam and gunnies attacked it in which our five police personnel were martyred. Two civilians, who were in the van, were also martyred in the attack", he said.

The IGP said that Umar Majid and his associates carried out the attack. "During our preliminary investigation, the name of a terrorist from Kulgam, Umar Majeed, and two of his associates, has come forward. They have taken four weapons which were being carried by the guards", he said.

Militants this evening fired at the vehicle of DySP headquarter Pulwama, Farooq Ahmad at Dangerpora Pulawma. His guards retaliated. However,

no loss of life was reported.

Hizbul Mujahiden has grabbed credit for the attack. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
it said that they killed five coppers and not bank guards. "They were killed by CRPF men," it claimed and said that the attack was not aimed at looting cash.

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti strongly condemned the killing of five police personnel and two bank officials of a cash van.

Minister said the officials were on duty to disburse and collect cash at a local bank branch and their killing reflects the dangerous criminalization turn the society is taking.

Mehbooba also condemned the killing of two soldiers in a cross LoC fire in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district. She also expressed grief over the death of a civilian in a grenade attack yesterday in the Khanyar area of Srinagar.

Mehbooba Mufti said she has been warning of the ill effects of violence time and again and appealed the civil society to rise to the occasion to make the future of our younger generation peaceful.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio wondered: Where the hell was Chumbaloni? And where was his $600?...
JK Bank Chairman Parvez Ahmad expressed grief over the killing of security personnel guarding the bank’s cash van."We at J&K Bank are pained over the killings of these security personnel who were on way back to Kulgam after delivering cash remittance at the Bank’s Manzgam, Aharbal branch. My heartfelt condolences and deep sympathies are with the bereaved families," he said.

Hafter in Abu Dhabi amid rumours of planned meeting with Serraj
[Libya Herald] Field Marshal Khalifa Hafter flew from Benghazi’s Benina Airport today to Abu Dhabi amid speculation that he will meet with Presidency Council head Faiez Serraj there.

According to a statement from the Libyan National Army General Command media office, the visit is at the invitation of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy commander of the UAE armed forces. However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
there have been constant rumours over the past three or four days of an encounter between him and Serraj having been organised by the Emiratis.

Hafter is said to be under heavy pressure by the Emiratis as well as by the Egyptians, Russians and the Americans to meet the PC head who, it is said, will arrive in the UAE in the next couple of days.

In February, Hafter refused to meet him in Cairo despite major efforts by the Egyptian government to broker an encounter. Serraj later claimed that Hafter had baulked at meeting him on the grounds that House of Representatives (HoR) President Ageela Saleh, who was also in the Egyptian capital at the time, should also have taken part but had refused to do so.

Hafter’s refusal resulted in a distinct cooling of relations between him and Cairo, and they are not yet seen as being fully mended.

Hafter was last in Abu Dhabi three weeks ago, again at the invitation of Sheikh Mohammed, during which time he is reported to have met secretly with a senior US military official.

Since "Jaish al-Islam" has much less influence and presence in Idlib in comparison to East Ghouta, which is their long-time stronghold, such a scenario is quite possible.

group for their so-called holy war ’Jihad’ and emphasized that it is only the Afghan forces who are waging a true Jihad against slaves and foreigners interfering in Afghanistan.

Speaking during a gathering organized on the eve of the Soviet forces defeat in Afghanistan, Sayyaf said the Afghan forces losing their lives in action are true deaders.

Questioning Taliban’s stance in the ongoing violence in the country under the shadow of Jihad, Sayyaf said Taliban are only killing innocent civilians, women, and children.

Sayyaf further added that the murder of the women and kiddies has been banned by Prophet and therefore their insurgency has no legitimacy.

The former Jihadi leader also slammed the Muftis endorsing Taliban’s insurgency and suicide kabooms, saying the Muftis should first carry out suicide attacks if such attacks are legitimate in Islam.

Sayyaf is one of the most influential jihadi leaders and has been harshly criticizing the Taliban group for their insurgency activities.

Kurdish forces show Islamic State no mercy, capture over 80% of Tabqa
[ALMASDARNEWS] A large ISIS flag in Tabqa city centre was pulled down today by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as their units secured downtown Tabqa, rendering jihadist bandidos snuffies in control of only 3 northern neighborhoods and a small portion of the adjacent Tabqa Dam.

Amid the Kurdish counter-insurgency operations, three boom-mobiles were immobilized and tons of armaments captured. Booby traps and mines were also continuously dismantled while humanitarian corridors have allowed over 20,000 civilians to escape.

Tabqa city was completely encircled on April 2; shortly after, the SDF liberated the Alexandria suburb which served as a launching pad to capture the former ISIS bastion.

US warplanes have aided the offensive with air support, conducted hundreds of Arclight airstrikes against ISIS bandidos snuffies while choppers have also been deployed, a relatively new development.

Once Tabqa city is wrestled from ISIS, the YPG-led SDF will head towards Raqqa city, the self-proclaimed ISIS capital since 2014.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuelan shopkeepers fortify their businesses
[MiamiHerald] Venezuela is in the grips of a monthlong anti-government protests that have left more than two dozen dead, hundreds injured and more than 1,500 people detained. But the demonstrations are also leaving a trail of property destruction in a country that’s already staggering amid a deep economic crisis. In the chaos of the demonstrations, dozens of stores, mom-and-pop shops and cargo trucks have been looted by crowds, sometimes driven by hunger. Of the 28 deaths being attributed to the protests, almost a dozen seem to be directly related to the brazen thefts.

he morning after a wave of robberies hit his neighborhood in El Valle last week, Javier Guevera, 35, found the metal shutters of his butcher shop battered but still holding against burglary attempts. He knows he was one of the lucky ones.

“I’m trying to support my colleagues who were victims,” he said. “It’s not right that you wake up early in the morning to go to work and realize that you’ve been left with nothing.”

He blamed the lawlessness on a mix of hunger and rampant criminality.

“This was done by violent people who didn’t have any food — accompanied by armed groups,” he said. “These were not honest people.”

In one of the most high-profile cases earlier this month, authorities said as many as 11 people died in a single night of looting in Caracas. While the numbers vary, it appears at least seven were electrocuted while trying to rob a bakery called La Mayer del Pan.

At the time, there was speculation that the store had been booby-trapped with an electric fence or that a power-line had fallen. But the truth is more mundane, said Jose de Freitas, the store’s 34-year-old manager. He said the night of April 20, armed gangs descended from the surrounding barrios to start sacking stores. They forced the bakery’s doors open with crowbars and emptied the shelves and the warehouse. He said the bakery had not been rigged to purposefully harm anyone.

“The people died because they tried to steal a coffee maker that was full of water,” he explained. “When the plug was pulled it made contact with the water, and because we have stainless steel furniture, it made a big circuit and, well, they were electrocuted.”

Damiano Del Vescovo, the head of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce in Carabobo state, told local radio that 13 stores in his city were looted in a single night this week. And he pleaded with demonstrators to understand who was paying the price for their actions.

“Vandalism is not a form of protest,” he said. “The merchants are not responsible for the economic crisis we’re living.”

While security forces have been engaged in fierce street battles to keep protesters at bay, they’ve been accused by the opposition of ignoring the looting — and sometimes even joining in.

The problem isn’t likely to go away anytime soon.

The opposition says it will stay on the streets until the government gives in to key demands, including holding general elections, allowing humanitarian aid into the country, releasing political prisoners and firing Supreme Court judges they accuse of trying to dissolve congress.

Russia mulls establishing four zones in Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] Russia proposed the creation of four zones in Syria as part of a wider plan to de-escalate the tension in the war-torn country.

The proposed zones will have safety lines along them and monitoring centers in order to avoid direct fire among the warring parties, as well as granting safe access to unarmed civilians and aid convoys.

The Russian proposal also involves the possibility of the three guarantor states (Russia, Iran and Turley) to form a working group and send troops in order to enhance the application of the proposal.
But not the U.S., etc? An interesting proposal.
The three states have brokered a ceasefire in the northern city of Aleppo last year which led to conclude a deal whereby rebels surrendered their districts to the Syrian Army and left to Idlib.

, accused by the United States of criminal masterminding the 2008 attacks on the Indian financial capital Mumbai that killed 166 people, a Pak official said on Monday.

Saeed was sent to his room in January after years of living free in Pakistain, a sore point in the relationship between the United States and Pakistain. His freedom had also infuriated Islamabad’s arch-foe India.

The U.S. had offered $10 million for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Saeed, who heads the Moslem charity Jamaat-ud-Dawa

(LeT).

Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan, a front man for the provincial Punjab

government, said the regional administration decided on Sunday to extent the restrictions on Saeed, but did not specify the reasons why.

"Hafiz Saeed’s house arrest, which ended Sunday night, has been extended for another three months," Khan said.

Saeed could not be reached for comment.

The Mumbai attacks in 2008, when 10 gunnies swarmed across targets including two luxury hotels, a Jewish center and a train station in a rampage that lasted several days, brought Pakistain and India to the brink of war.

India accused Pakistain of sponsoring the attacks through LeT, which Saeed founded in the 1990s. Pakistain has denied any state involvement and Saeed ‐ who has distanced himself from LeT ‐ has said repeatedly he was not responsible.

Previous Pak announcements of action against anti-India myrmidon groups have rarely led to serious punishments for them.

Sweden probes 'arson attack' on nation's largest Shiite mosque, one arrested
[TheLocal.se] Sweden's largest Shiite Moslem mosque was badly damaged overnight in a suspected arson attack, police said Monday, adding later that they had made one arrest in connection with the incident.

Fire and emergency services were alerted to the scene a little before 12:30am on Monday, where "flames were engulfing the outer facade" of the Imam Ali Islamic Centre in the northern Stockholm suburb of Jakobsberg, a police front man said.

No injuries were reported.

"A man who earlier in the day had been tossed in the slammer
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
and was scheduled for a hearing, was, after interrogation, taken into custody," police said in a statement.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
they released no information on the man's identity or possible motive.

"This is Sweden's largest Shia mosque with thousands of faithful... They are really concerned," mosque front man Akil Zahari told broadcaster SVT. Zahiri said that there were a few people in the mosque when the fire was first noticed. A party had been held earlier in the evening.

The fire raged for over an hour but by 3am fire fighters had the flames largely extinguished.

No residential buildings surround the large mosque, so police said there was no risk of the fire spreading to other houses.

Several mosques in Sweden have been the target of arson attacks in recent years but few perpetrators have been caught.

In April last year, a 31-year-old man identified through CCTV footage was tossed in the clink
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
for three years for racially-aggravated arson after admitting setting fire to a mosque in the southwestern town of Boras.

Swedish anti-racism campaigners protested in January 2015 after a trio of arson attacks on mosques in the Nordic country.

FBI translator married ISIS terrorist she was supposed to investigate: report
[NYPOST] An FBI translator who was assigned to investigate a bloodthirsty ISIS terrorist wound up falling head-over-heels in love with the man -- and married him instead, a report says.
Junior translator, linguist, investigator, which is it ?
Daniela Greene, 38, was apparently so lovestruck by the German-born jihadist that she left her husband in the US to be with him in war-torn Syria, and then lied to the feds about her whereabouts, according to CNN.
'Lied to the feds about whereabouts' but kept in contact with friends via email ?
Denis Cuspert — a wannabe rapper-turned-ISIS pitchman — reportedly became the apple of her eye sometime in 2014, despite having a notorious penchant for violence.
An apple in someone's eye no doubt.
Roughly three years after joining the FBI as a linguist, Greene was assigned to the Detroit bureau in Jan. 2014 and asked to probe Cuspert.

By June, she was already smitten by the tatted-up terrorist and making plans to be with him in the Middle East. They reportedly tied the knot in Syria sometime that month.

Greene eventually got cold feet, though, and decided to come back to the US in Aug. 2014. She was immediately arrested upon her return.
He's just not interested in a White House performance.
According to CNN, Greene had been emailing an unidentified person back home about having second thoughts about her decision to pack up and leave soon-after she got hitched.

Greene was arrested immediately upon her return to the states and later agreed to cooperate with authorities. She pleaded guilty to making false statements involving international terrorism in Dec. 2014 and was released from prison in Aug. 2016 after serving a surprising two-year sentence.
'Later' was it? Just a nice quiet plea, no evidence, no media or publicity.
Some have argued that Greene — who now works as a hostess in a hotel lounge — got off easy, compared to other Americans who’ve been prosecuted for ISIS-related crimes.
No need to 'argue' that one.
While Greene’s conduct was described in court papers as skirting “a line dangerously close to other more serious charges,” Assistant US Attorney Thomas Gillice insisted that she receive a lighter sentence on account of her cooperation.

The ISIS savage, known as Abu Talha al-Almani in Syria, is infamous in Germany for his terror-related rap songs.

Performing under the name “Deso Dogg,” Cuspert once praised Osama bin Laden and rhymed about killing then-President Barack Obama.

Greene’s case is just now being reported on account of it being sealed by the Justice Department.
Good morning Attorney General Sessions, we have a special case we'd like to brief you on this morning. Here are your follow-along PPT's sir.
It wasn’t unsealed until after she was done cooperating with authorities, CNN reports.

#3  From a CNN article, same topic:

In October 2015, the Pentagon said Cuspert was killed in an air strike near the northern Syria city of Raqqah.

Nine months later, on August 3, 2016, the Pentagon released a statement reversing its assessment of Cuspert's death: "It now appears that assessment was incorrect and Denis Cuspert survived the airstrike."

One day later, Greene was released from federal prison, records show.

If nothing else, interesting timing.

Cuspert's past is well documented, and presents a checklist of social pathologies. Son of a German mother and Ghanaian father, his father abandoned the family when Denis was a baby. The boy was alienated from his African-American stepfather, and was involved in a series of petty criminal act, including drug use. He felt racially ostracized, and said that he had been beaten as a child because of his race.[1]

Court documents did not explain how she escaped from IS territory, but by early August, less than two months after traveling to Syria, she returned to the United States and was arrested.

She immediately confessed and began cooperating with US prosecutors. Her cooperation “was significant, long-running and substantial,” said an investigator, supporting a lenient sentence.

Ultimately she pleaded guilty to one charge of “making false statements involving international terrorism,” based on what she originally told the FBI about her travel plans. She received a relatively light 24-month prison sentence, and was released last year.

Arabia
Al-Qaeda leader says group fought alongside US-backed forces
[IsraelTimes] Terror group’s Yemen branch has become a de facto ally of Yemeni government in civil war against Iranian-sponsored Houthis.

The leader of al-Qaeda’s branch in Yemen said that his murderous Moslems have often fought alongside Yemeni government factions -- remarks that could embarrass the US-backed coalition fighting the impoverished Arab country’s Iranian catspaws.

Qasim al-Rimi leads the group known as al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula
...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
, considered by Washington to be the most dangerous offshoot of the global terror network. He succeeded Nasir al-Wuhayshi, who was killed in a US dronezap nearly two years ago.

On the US most-wanted list with a $5 million reward for his capture, al-Rimi has been a top target of US Arclight airstrikes, which have soared in the past four months in southern Yemen. He spoke on Sunday to AQAP’s media arm al-Malahem from some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location in Yemen.

"We fight along all Moslems in Yemen, together with different Islamic groups," he said, adding that his followers have teamed up with an array of factions -- including the ultraconservative Salafis, "the Moslem Brüderbund and also our brothers among the sons of (Sunni) tribes" -- against Yemen’s Iranian catspaws known as Houthis.

Al-Rimi did not elaborate on what exactly fighting "alongside" meant but al-Qaeda has emerged as a de-facto ally of the government of Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his backers Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and the United Arab Emirates against the Houthis in a grueling civil war that has wreaked devastation, caused widespread hunger and killed more than 10,000 since late 2014.

Over the past decade, the terror group has built up ties of one degree or another with the country’s many tribes -- and has often used anger over civilians killed in American Arclight airstrikes to gain recruits.

The Moslem Brüderbund and Salafis are some of the key militias on Hadi’s side, and regularly receive funds and weapons from the US-backed Saudi led coalition.

The Yemen war pits fighters loyal to Hadi, who was forced into Saudi exile after Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014. A coalition of mostly Sunni Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia stepped in to wage an extensive air campaign in March 2015 and deployed ground forces against the rebels.

Multiple rounds of UN-brokered peace talks have failed to bridge the gap between Yemen’s warring sides, and the conflict allowed al-Qaeda and its rival Islamic State

affiliate to exploit the chaos and increase their footprint, especially in southern Yemen where Hadi’s forces have failed to restore law and order.

Al-Qaeda seized the city of Mukalla, the capital of Yemen’s largest province of Hadramawt in 2015, but was forced to withdraw last year.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela: As protests ramp up, here are 5 things to watch
[WashingtonPost] For the second consecutive spring, Venezuela is a powder keg.

For weeks, demonstrators have been protesting the unpopular government of President Nicolás Maduro, and the country’s food shortages and foundering economy. The catalyst for this year’s demonstrations came in the form of the government shutdown of the opposition-controlled National Assembly.

Opposition leaders are pushing for early presidential elections, presenting the option as a means of avoiding further strife — and more deaths. But bans and threats against opposition politicians have sparked more protests, fueled by pent-up outrage at the prolonged economic recession. Opposition-led protests are gaining traction within Venezuela’s working classes, including urban centers that were once strongholds of Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez.

With few allies in the region and Venezuela’s international reserves dropping to new lows, Maduro is coming under increased pressure to negotiate an electoral solution.

Here are five areas to watch:

1) Maduro can try to hunker down, but it won’t be easy

Last week, Venezuela gave its formal notification to withdraw from the Organization of American States. The exit costs for this authoritarian regime are already very high, and leaving the OAS may be a sign that the Venezuelan government is preparing for a fierce battle. This hunker-down scenario faces the formidable challenge of economic collapse.

2) Maduro made huge blunders and has not bounced back

The double blunder of shutting down the Assembly and then backtracking on made Maduro look weak — and opponents capitalized on a humiliating video of protesters pelting the president with eggs at a pro-government rally.

3) Looting is on the rise — but what message does this send?

Looting generally does not signal pro-opposition support, but if it takes place in parallel with political protests, such co-occurrence can give a powerful message that the authorities are to blame for the meltdown. The looting, along with disruptive protests and a growing sense of instability and lawlessness, creates further problems for the government’s political legitimacy.

4) The military remains tolerant, if not actively supportive, of Maduro

Venezuela’s military is also a conglomerate of business interests. The high command manages the critically important food import sector, has been accused of profiting from food shortages and has interests in the strategic state oil and mining industries. If popular discontent continues to swell, creating the need for the army to step in, there could be a major change in the political leanings of the military high command. The army may be corrupt, ideological and pro-government, but it may not be willing to radically change its professional role to repress Venezuelans on behalf of a discredited government.

5) There is growing international pressure for an electoral solution

Venezuela’s formal notice to exit the Organization of American States will launch a two-year withdrawal process. But international support for dialogue is growing stronger, with Latin American countries calling for the Vatican to resume suspended international mediation. The end goal of an internationally supported dialogue would be a commitment to the democratic process — and published dates for regional and presidential elections, along with the participation of international monitors to ensure free and fair elections.

With more protests and countermarches from the government announced for the weeks ahead, the clashes seem likely to continue. What we have learned is that whether Venezuela reaches a tipping point depends not only on popular mobilization but also on whether the government cracks under the combined international political and economic pressure.

Police hurt in Paris May 1 clashes with youths
[Dhaka Tribune] Violence erupted between protesters and police near Place de la Bastille in the French capital during a march for the annual May Day workers' rally led by three unions, six days before the presidential election run-off.

Three officers were hurt in festivities between riot police and masked youths during a May 1 march in Gay Paree on Monday that carried extra significance six days before the presidential election run-off.

"Masked individuals threw objects and Molotov cocktails at police" who responded by firing teargas, authorities said.

The violence erupted near Place de la Bastille in the French capital as the march led by three unions including La Belle France’s biggest, the CGT, headed for another square nearby.

At one point, a blazing shopping trolley packed with flammable material was pushed towards police lines, an AFP photographer saw.

The rivals for the presidency, centrist frontrunner Emmanuel Macron and far-right rival Marine Le Pen, faced shows of opposition to their programmes during the fractious May 1 workers’ marches.

The election runoff takes place next Sunday.

Uncles slit 3-year-old nephew’s throat for money
[Dhaka Tribune] A three-year-old child was murdered in cold blood by his uncles and cousin after abduction in Thakurgaon’s Ranishangkail upazila, the court has been told.

Shetu, the maternal uncle of Abdul Kafi Tushar, 3, told Thakurgaon’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Monday that three others, including the child’s paternal uncle and cousin, were directly involved in the murder.

Tushar went missing on April 26. His body was recovered from a haystack near his house two days later.

Police say they have locked away
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
nine suspects.

Shetu said Tushar’s paternal uncle Raju had planned the abduction for ransom as the latter needed money for marriage.

Raju had roped in Shetu, his nephew Shanto, 15, and Shanto’s friend Ripon promising to give them large sums of money.

Shetu told the court that Tushar was kidnapped on April 26 as per Raju’s plan. Shetu stole his mother’s phone and Raju used it to call his Tushar’s father Masud Rana demanding Tk5 lakh ransom several hours after the abduction.

But after Masud Rana filed a police complaint about his son’s kidnap, the abductors moved Tushar to another place.

Shetu said the four of the sedated the boy and took him to a room where they killed him by severing his tendons and slitting his throat.

Amputated leg found in BBH parking lot
[DAWN] RAWALPINDI: An amputated leg was found in the parking space of the Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
Hospital (BBH) on Sunday, causing panic among the people.
"Is this your leg?"
"I dunno. What color is it?"

The police were called and are now trying to track down the people who may have thrown it into the parking and left.

The leg seems to have been amputated at least a couple of days ago and was found in the parking lot opposite the police post and emergency department.

When asked, BBH Superintendent Arshad Ali said the amputation of limbs is normal practice at the hospital and that the administration strictly follows the legal procedure and gives the amputated parts to the patients’ relatives to be buried.

He said it would seem that the amputated leg was thrown into the parking lot and that the police have been called to investigate the matter.

He said a woman’s leg was amputated a few days ago but her son was given the amputated limb.

The police said a report has been registered and an investigation launched though officials say no case has been registered during the last week which could help solve this one.
