Marwam Bargouti does the Cindy Sheehan Fast™
Legal Insurrection
Marwan Barghouti is serving five life sentences for murders during the Second Intifada.

He is a hero to many Palestinians and also to Western leftists. The NY Times gave him a platform to announce a mass hunger strike, NY Times gives Palestinian terrorist Marwan Barghouti platform to announce hunger strike.

In a reaction, Israeli protesters barbecued outside prison where Palestinian terrorists on hunger strike leading to an angry reaction, Palestinians fume over barbecue taunt of terrorist hunger strikers, as hundreds drop out.
Since then, there have been claims that if he died, it would set off a new Intifada.

It doesn't appear, however, that he is likely to starve to death, since he was caught on video eating.

Israel National News reports, Watch: Barghouti's lies caught on film: see link for video
Arch-terrorist and mass-murderer Marwan Barghouti, who has led a hunger strike by jailed terrorists held in Israeli prisons, has been eating in secret while maintaining the pretenses of his own hunger strike, footage released Sunday reveals.

Barghouti, who is believed to be responsible for the deaths of 26 people in suicide bombings and shooting attacks during the Second Intifada and is currently serving five consecutive life sentences for murder, declared the hunger strike in a New York Times opinion piece in April, in the middle of the Jewish festival of Passover.

But footage of Barghouti’s jail cell reveals that the arch-terrorist feigned his own hunger strike, eating in secret in a corner of his room.

The Inevitability And Irreversibility Of Government-Sponsored Health Care
[Mercer] Unz Review columnist Dr. Boyd D. Cathey muses about another government power-grab called Trump Care. Naturally, he hopes it’ll be slightly better than the one to precede it. Dr. Cathey hearkens back to a different, inegalitarian time when the principle of noblesse oblige drove the faithful and the wealthy to take care of the needy. With the triumph of 19th century liberalism and the fanaticism of progress, the quest to level society saw the Church robbed of its lands and traditional role. Conditions soon arose that predisposed the downtrodden to Socialism, Communism and the modern welfare state.

#4  Amazing how the left and the "progressives" believe it is okay to name call and make fun of those with disabilities and then make the middle class pay for millions of dollars of upgrades to promote accessibility.

If I make fun of a person with an affliction or slur someone's name I would be fired from my job. But its okay for the left to do that which they accuse us on the right.

Taxpayers forced to cover legal costs for illegal aliens
[American Thinker] Sanctuary cities have all sorts of ways to reward criminality and punish tax-paying citizens. Most recently, Sacramento has joined other cities in using tax dollars to fund legal fees for illegal aliens. Fox News reports:

Sacramento became the latest city this week to go above and beyond ’sanctuary’ policies by approving the use of taxpayer dollars to support the legal defense of illegal immigrants facing deportation. [snip]

The plan, backed by the mayor, fits a trend of local and state lawmakers taking similar action. As the Trump administration separately faces a court setback in its bid to cut off federal funds to sanctuary cities, those jurisdictions are only doubling down.

Sacramento isn’t the first city to institute this new level of lawless madness.

Earlier in the week, officials in Michigan's Washtenaw County gave initial approval to pay such legal bills with taxpayer funds.

Proposals to directly or indirectly pay for legal assistance to illegal immigrants have also gained approval in Providence, R.I.; Austin, Texas; San Francisco, Calif.; and Newark, N.J.

Even in the small New York city of Ithaca, politicians are gearing up to spend emergency funds to help illegal immigrants taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, according to The Ithaca Voice.

And on a broader scale, New York lawmakers recently signed off on a statewide legal defense fund, while California legislators are considering a bill creating a fund that could carry a price tag of up to $12 million per year.

Why Is James Comey Still Around?
[American Thinker] James Comey epitomizes a lot of what is wrong with Washington and the elite culture of which he is a part. The question Americans ought to be asking after his recent testimony before Congress is not "What happened?" with Hillary Clinton, the election, or the Russians but "How the hell is this guy still running the FBI?" It’s a question for the president too.

Comey is a creature of Washington and the self-interested hypocritical elites that President Trump excoriated on his road to the White House. And yet there was Comey the other day, preening before Congress in his "ah shucks I’m just a big tall guy trying my darndest to do the right thing" act, balancing attacks from the left and right with a complacent disregard for any notion of what is right, other than his take at the moment on any particular issue.

Comey’s survival owes in part to some basic qualities. In many respects he is the type of guy who typically prospers in a hierarchical environment. He is tall and imposing, while being technically smart and basically competent. Comey always appears calm and has the knack to look slightly exasperated when fielding questions or criticism, as if those inquiring are barely worthy of his intellect or attention, but he deigns anyway. In an attempt to buffer his obvious condensation he offers up that occasional "Aw shucks" moment, as when at the recent hearing he exclaimed "Golly!" to explain how he felt about the slings and arrows sent his way.

Comey is very much like his bete noir Hillary Clinton, the woman with whom he is now historically entangled -- don’t try to imagine it literally. Like Hillary Clinton, he won’t go away, can’t admit to mistakes, nor does it appear he has a good sense of self-awareness. It’s like inspector Javert investigating Torquemada, or vice-versa, it really doesn’t matter.

Marijuana-related hospitalizations quadruple among kids in Colorado after legalization: Study
[Wash Times] Colorado hospitals have experienced a surge in visits involving teenagers and young adults testing positive for marijuana since the state legalized medical and recreational pot, according to new research.

The annual number of marijuana-related emergency room visits logged by Colorado’s children’s hospital system spiked from 106 in 2005 to 631 in 2014, Dr. George Wang of Children’s Hospital Colorado wrote in a study scheduled to be presented Monday in San Francisco.

The rate of marijuana-related visits among total hospitalizations involving 13- to 21-year-olds increased over four-fold that same span, with about four visits per every 1,000 patients in 2015 involving marijuana in one regard or another, Dr. Wang reported.

Legalizing medical marijuana in 2000 and the nation’s first retail pot shops in 2014 may have played a part in the uptick of hospital visits, according to the report’s author.

Emergency department and urgent care visits "increased at a rapid rate after commercialization of medical marijuana and legalization of recreational marijuana," Dr. Wang wrote.

Colorado’s children hospitals treated 3,443 patients between 2004 and 2014 who were either admitted for marijuana use or subsequently tested positive for THC, the plant’s potent chemical, according to the report. About two-thirds of those patients were also given psychiatric consultations, its authors acknowledged, the likes of which similarly surged from 65 in 2005 to 450 consultations in 2014.

Brave Democrat touts bill to 'decentralize' the federal government
[The Hill] Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) is touting a bill that would "decentralize" the federal government, moving parts away from Washington.

"We have a lot more employees in the federal government than we ever imagined as a country, and we are in a position where a good number of these jobs don't necessarily need to be in Washington, D.C.," he told the Washington Examiner in an interview published Saturday.

Ryan introduced a bill in April to create a bipartisan commission that would work with the General Services Administration ‐ which is charged with managing federal agencies ‐ to recommend federal agencies to relocate.

The bill doesn’t currently have any co-sponsors, the Examiner reported, but Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Ut.) introduced a similar resolution in January. The Ohio Democrat says his bill is less about breaking up the federal government’s presence in the D.C. metro region and more about spreading economic benefits throughout the country.

"Even if you could move 10 percent of the 300,000 -- back of the envelope -- say you could move 30,000 jobs and you can move them a thousand at a time," Ryan said. "I can't tell you what that would do for the city of Youngstown or Gary, Indiana, or Milwaukee."

Ryan is urging his fellow Democrats to get on board with his proposal, especially those in the Midwest.

"Democrats should be for decentralizing the government, you know? It is big. It is bureaucratic. It does need to be closer to the people," Ryan told the newspaper.

Auzzie Billionaire investing $2 billion in U.S. due to confidence in POTUS
[Free Beacon] Australian billionaire and manufacturing CEO Anthony Pratt said Friday on Fox Business that he is investing $2 billion in the United States because he has "confidence" in President Trump.

"We have enormous confidence in President Trump. He's doing a wonderful job, and we think he will continue to do a great job," Pratt said. "He's reducing unemployment. As we saw today, the job figures show unemployment is the lowest it's been for a decade, and he's supporting manufacturing."

"And that's why we are doubling down on our investment in the United States, creating 7,000 high-paying manufacturing jobs, mainly in the Midwest," Pratt added.

The latest jobs report was released Friday and showed the U.S. created 211,000 jobs in April, leading the unemployment rate to fall to its lowest level in a decade, 4.4 percent. The report also showed 12,000 more Americans joined the labor force in April.

Fox Business reporter Elizabeth MacDonald asked Pratt in which states these new manufacturing jobs would be located.

Arab sheikhs to change the climate in the region, bringing an iceberg from Antarctica
[Sunday Express] The scorching Middle Eastern country, and much of the transcontinental region, is in the midst of a drought with some studies suggesting a water shortage could last for the next 25 years.

The UAE, which is among the top 10 water-scarce countries in the world, hopes to help ease the stress of a drinking water shortage by towing an iceberg from the freezing Antarctica in order to create more drinking water.

The National Advisor Bureau Limited’s (NABL) managing Director Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi says an average iceberg contains "more than 20 billion gallons of water” which would be enough for one million people over five years.

Up to four-fifths of an iceberg’s mass is underwater, and due to their vast density, they would theoretically not melt in the boiling climate of the Middle Eastern coastal line.

Segregation‐It's Bad and It's Back!
[PJ] On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the whites-only section of a Montgomery, Alabama, bus and take her assigned place in what was then called the "colored" section. For that highly courageous and moral action Ms. Parks has been justly celebrated ever since as "the first lady of civil rights," a true heroine for fighting the despicable evil of segregation.
Something must depart, before it can return.
On January 14, 1963, Democrat George Wallace, governor of that same state of Alabama, who pushed back hard against Parks and the civil rights movement in general, advocated, in his inaugural address, "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." (If you want to relive that nauseating experience, you can do it here.)

Unfortunately for Wallace, but fortunately for the decent people of this country, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was just over the horizon and segregation was, at long last and none too soon, on its way out.

Or was it? Did it ever really go away and is it now making a comeback from the opposite side?

The demands of UC Santa Cruz African-American and Caribbean students, accepted by the school Thursday, sound more like Wallace than they do like Parks.

These undergraduates staged a sit-in at the university until the administration agreed to ratify what amounts to a new form of segregation, guaranteeing all black students the right to live together in one building. And, ironically, the building they have succeeded in segregating (in the name of "safe spaces" unsurprisingly) is that university's Rosa Parks African American Theme House. It will now be painted, also based on their demand, the Pan-African colors of red, green and black.

It's hard to say what Parks would have made of the paint job, but I doubt she or Dr. Martin Luther King--you know, the guy who gave that "I have a dream" speech about black and white children playing together--would think much of segregated residences or of the protesters' also accepted demand that all incoming freshpeople (freshies?) be given mandatory "diversity training" specifically approved by the protestors themselves (diversity of thought no doubt excluded).

UW-Madison student government blames Israel for U.S. police 'extrajudicial shootings of black and brown bodies'
[Legal Insurrection] In July 2016 I documented a growing tactic in the anti-Israel movement, to blame Israel for domestic U.S. police shootings of blacks, such as Michael Brown in Ferguson.

The tactic, meant to exploit preexisting racial tension and stoke anti-Semitism to turn people against Israel, had been many years in the making, as I wrote in Exposed: Years-long effort to blame Israel for U.S. police shootings of blacks:

... there has been a multi-year effort by left-wing and Islamist anti-Israel, anti-Zionist, and openly anti-Semitic activists to hijack racial tensions in the United States and redirect that anger towards Israel.

That effort has been on overdrive since the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson and is accomplished through a combination of false and misleading statements regarding the militarization of domestic U.S. police departments and U.S. police training in Israel.

The intellectual rubric is "intersectionality," by which anti-Israel activists try to forge links with minority (particularly black) activists by holding out Israel as the key link to oppression around the globe....

It is preposterous to blame Israeli counter-terrorism training for the militarization of U.S. police, much less how a specific police officer acted in a particular situation. Only a miniscule and almost unmeasurable percentage of U.S. police are trained in Israel.

There are several hundred police training academies in the U.S. training tens of thousands of police in the U.S., compared to a few hundred (at most) police who participate in Israeli counter-terrorism training. That Israeli training is focused on counter-terrorism, and usually involves police chiefs who visit Israel for a week of combined seminars and tourism...

So the likelihood is somewhere close to zero that any cop who is involved in a shooting (much less an unjustified shooting) was trained in Israel and the Israeli training contributed to the shooting....

this movement to blame Israel for minority deaths in the U.S. is not about Israeli training of police. There is no connection. Whatsoever.

Rather, it’s an attempt to exploit racial tensions unrelated to Israel and to stoke hate particularly in the black community.

There is zero evidence that Israel anti-terrorism training of police chiefs has had any connection to any police shootings of blacks in the U.S., much less the high profile shootings that gave rise to the Black Lives Matters movement.

Nonetheless, anti-Israel activists like Australian writer CJ Werleman directly blamed Israel for the shooting of Alton Sterling:

ATF Concerned About California Police Gun Sales
Moved to Page 2
[Breitbart] The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is concerned that California police officers are acquiring "off-roster" guns, then "illegally" selling them.

Officers can take advantage of an exemption allowing them to purchase guns that law-abiding citizens are not allowed to buy‐"if they passed a three-day basic firearms training course [to be] covered under the exemption." On the other hand, law-abiding citizens are limited to a roster of California-approved handguns.

The ATF is concerned that officers are acquiring the "off-roster" weapons, then selling them for profit.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the ATF’s concern came to the forefront with the recent seizure of two truckloads of guns from Pasadena Police Department Lt. Vasken Gourdikian. Although Gourdikian has not been charged, "federal records show investigators seized 57 firearms from the home, including pistols, rifles and shotguns." The Los Angeles Times reports the weapons were "worth tens of thousands of dollars."

The Union-Tribune reports the ATF views the possibility of California police officers acquiring "off-roster" guns to sell on the side as an "emerging problem." The agency worries that this is part of a "growing trend of law enforcement officials engaging in the business of unlicensed firearms dealing."

#4  Being a resident of Commiefornia the legislature has proven their words and promises to the people are worthless. The legislature are a bunch of liars. In 2000 we were told we could keep our standard capacity magazines that held more than 10 cartridges provided we had proof that we purchased them before January 1, 2000. The next battery of anti-gun legislation affirmed the previous exemption provided the owner of the standard capacity magazines that hold more than ten cartridges had documentation that they were purchased prior to 1,1,2000. Their latest insult and illegal act reversed those assurances and promises and laws. They violated their own published written procedures and allowed no period for public comment and passed a new law making any non L.E.O. in possession of a magazine holding more than ten cartridges a felony after July 1, 2017. This Unconstitutional law is the last straw for me. I getting my home ready to sell so I can move out of state. They also violated the Constitutional rights of every citizen when they passed a law that the people of California cannot buy ammunition from the large discounters who are all out out of state.

Escape from moving patrol car successful until parolee hits pavement
[Sacramento Bee] SACRAMENTO, CALIF. Authorities have identified a parolee who died after jumping out a moving patrol car in Northern California.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office identified the man Saturday as 29-year-old Ryan Ellis.

Sacramento County Sheriff deputies detained Ellis on Thursday night near his estranged wife's home in North Highlands after receiving reports of a man who had violated a restraining order.

Officials say Ellis was handcuffed and put in the back of a patrol car. While he was being driven to jail, he kicked out the rear window of the vehicle and jumped out.

Department spokesman Sgt. Tony Turnbull says Ellis received critical injuries to his head and was sent to the hospital. He died the next morning.

New 'Huma' emails corroborate Peter Schweizer's accounts in "Clinton Cash."
Cow added to make Besoeker happy at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
[Judicial Watch] The government watchdog group Judicial Watch released nearly 900 pages of new State Department documents Tuesday that included a new batch of previously unreleased email exchanges in which former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was sent additional classified information through her private unsecure email server by longtime aide Huma Abedin.

The new "Huma emails" also include four instances in which Clinton's then-scheduler Lona Valmoro forwarded Clinton's detailed daily schedules--which were highly classified because of her position in government and in the line of presidential succession--being sent to top Clinton Foundation officials, also at unsecured email addresses. They also included 29 email exchanges not previously turned over to the State Department, bringing the known total to date to at least 317 emails that were not part of the 55,000 pages of emails that Clinton turned over to the State Department, which "as far as she knew," were all of her government emails--another contradiction with her sworn testimony to Congress.

The following classified information was sent through the clintonemail.com account, according to those emails:
In a December 21, 2009, email, Clinton top national security and foreign policy staffer Jake Sullivan forwarded an email to Clinton's unsecured email account containing classified information heavily redacted under FOIA exemption B1.4(D)--"Information specifically authorized by an executive order to be kept secret in the interest of national defense or foreign policy ... Foreign relations or foreign activities of the United States, including confidential sources." Clinton then forwarded the email, concerning the climate change accord, from her unsecured email account to Abedin's unsecured email account with the message, "Pls print."

Cassini Probe Finds Vast Void between Saturn's Rings
[An Nahar] The unmanned Cassini spacecraft, after completing two passes in the vast, unexplored area between Saturn's rings has discovered not much else there, researchers at NASA said.

Scientists have been surprised to find that not all that much -- not even space dust -- lies between Saturn's iconic rings.

"The region between the rings and Saturn is 'the big empty,' apparently," said Cassini Project Manager Earl Maize of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, after the probe's first pass.

The rings themselves are made of fast-moving particles of ice and space debris.

The 22-foot-tall (6.7 meter) Cassini spacecraft launched in 1997 and began orbiting Saturn in 2004.

Cassini made a first pass to explore what lies between the rings in late April and a second one on May 2, at a speed of about 77,000 miles per hour relative to the planet.

The gap between the rings and the top of Saturn's atmosphere is about 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers).

Cassini is expected to make a total of 22 dives between the rings and the planet before making a death plunge into the gas giant in September.

Cassini is a 20-year-old joint mission of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.

#1  The gap between rings A and B is named the Cassini Division. Any particle orbiting in that gap would align with the moon Mimas every other orbit making such an orbit unstable causing any dust/ice that should enter the gap to leave.

I would look for moons to associate with each of the other gaps.

#2  What EF said. There's actually a couple dozen gaps in rings that correspond to orbital periods of the major moons.
As for "rings themselves are made of fast-moving particles of ice and space debris", the rings ARE the minor moons of Saturn.

Serraj updates Presidency Council on Hafter meeting
[Libya Herald] All six active members of the Presidency Council (PC) met together on Friday night to review Faiez Serraj’s Abu Dhabi meeting with Khalifa Hafter as well as assess the situation in southern Libya.

Serraj said the aim of his Hafter talks had been to reach a political consensus based on the Skhirat Agreement, prevent any further escalations of violence and to support the stability of Libya.

With intermittent fighting still occuring in the south, part of the discussions was devoted alleviating the suffering faced by Fezzan residents.

With Ramadan on the horizon, providing foodstuffs and other commodities for Libyans was also looked at, as were measures adopted by the PC in attempting to boost the country’s economic performance.

Without giving specific names, Serraj also praised the help of "several friendly countries" and the "positive contribution of those countries in resolving political, security and economic bottlenecks and accelerating the return of their companies and diplomatic missions back to Libya".

The only two countries whose embassy staff have returned to Libya are Italia and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
In addition to Serraj, those present at the meeting were Ahmed Maetig, Fathi Majbri, Ahmed Hamza, Abdulsalam Kajman and Ahmed Hamza.

Also yesterday, the EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini spoke by phone with Serraj in which she expressed European endorsement of the Hafter-Serraj summit, stressing that he EU would continue to encourage the dialogue process in Libya.

12 dead, 40 hurt in Afghan attack during census
[DAWN] At least 12 people — 10 civilians and one sepoy each from the Pakistan Army and the paramilitary Frontier Corps — lost their lives and around 40 others were injured in firing and shelling after Afghan forces attacked FC personnel guarding the staff conducting census in two villages on the Chaman border on Friday.

According to official sources, Pakistani forces immediately retaliated after taking positions.

Soon after the clashes began, the Pakistani authorities closed the Friendship Gate on the border.

Officials said the clashes erupted when Afghan forces attacked FC personnel guarding the census staff in the Killi Luqman and Killi Jahangir villages.

An Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesman said that Afghan border police opened fire on FC personnel detailed for the security of a census team. A civilian died and 18 people, including four Balochistan FC soldiers, were injured in the initial attack. According to early reports, a teenager died in the incident.

The military spokesman said that since April 30, Afghan border police had been creating hurdles in the conduct of census in the divided villages of Killi Luqman and Killi Jahangir in the Chaman area on the Pakistani side.

“This was done despite the fact that Afghan authorities had been informed well in advance and coordination was carried out through diplomatic and military channels for the conduct of census,” an ISPR statement said.

in view of the prevailing security situation in the region which lies close to the Afghan border.

A ban has also been slapped on waving guns.

The decision was taken at a jirga attended by senior officers and elders of the two administrative units of Kurram in Sadda here on Friday.

Assistant political agents Tariq Hassan Khan, Arfan Ali Khan and Commandant Kurram Militia Col Umar Malik addressed the meeting.

An official said important decisions were taken in the wake of series of kabooms in Parachinar and Gowdar areas which had killed and maimed over 400 people.

Officials said the vigilance committees would continue operating in their respective areas to check activities of suspected people. Display of weapons has been banned and local people have been asked to cooperate with the security forces in this regard, they added.

It is worth mentioning that people in Pewar, Shalozan, Borki and Kherlachi areas in upper subdivision of Kurram have already set up vigilance committees. APA Tariq Hassan told the jirga that anti-state elements were trying to disturb law and order situation in Kurram valley, but the government would foil their designs.

earlier today.

The provincial council officials are saying that the Taliban snuffies managed to take control of the district following heavy festivities which erupted between the Afghan forces and the murderous Moslems on Friday.

The Ministry of Defense front man Gen. Dawlat Waziri confirmed that heavy festivities are underway in Qala-e-Zal since Friday.

Sadat further added that several people have sustained casualties during the festivities but there are no reports regarding the exact number.

‘Friendly’ as ever...
[DAWN] EVEN for the convicted and condemned, it was a pathetic picture: Saulat Mirza, formerly of the MQM, confessing just hours before he was scheduled to be executed. Mirza said he’d been used like tissue paper, and that others learn from his example. It seemed a far cry from the ’90s Saulat: the man who had jeered "it’s just a formality" when the trial judge sentenced him to death.

Now slumped over in Machh Jail, Mirza only wished that party workers "open [their] eyes". Call it a hit man’s humanity: having murdered KESC MD Shahid Hamid and so many others, Saulat Mirza was making one last bid for peace. Two months later, he was hanged

The whole thing wasn’t just wildly unreal -- the last supper of a contract killer, beamed right into our living rooms. It was also without point: a confession without a magistrate has no legal value. Nor was it a revelation: Saulat was rehashing what he’d already told a joint investigation team years ago.

Iraq
New Iraqi offensive begins in Diyala
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) The Dijla Operations Command has declared launching an offensive that includes four regions in east of Baquba, Diyala province.

“Joint troops of army and police, backed by the paramilitary troops, launched military operation that included four regions of al-Nada basin, Hamreen, Wadi Thilab and Tilal Qazlaq,” Mag. Gen. Mazhar al-Azzawi, told AlSumaria News on Saturday.

“The army jets destroyed a booby-trapped vehicle in Tilal Qazlaq region. A terrorist was arrested,” Azzawi said adding that the operation, which targets eliminating the Islamic State sleeper cells, is still ongoing.

Al-Nada region, which witnesses attacks by IS every now and then, is considered strategic being located at the eastern gate of Hamreen basin, which facilitated infiltration of some IS members recently.

Several offensives were launched over the past few weeks in eastern and northeastern regions in Diyala.

IS still holds a few areas in Salahuddin, Diyala, Anbar and Kirkuk, occasionally using them as launching points for its attacks against civilians and security. The Iraqi government is currently employing most of its military power in a major campaign to drive IS out of Mosul, its largest stronghold in Iraq.

Iraqi generals say the group currently controls less than seven percent of the Iraqi territory.

Kurds repel ISIS attack in Hasakah
[ARA News] Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) on Friday repelled an attack by Islamic State’s (ISIS) jihadists on a gas facility near Shaddadi town in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province.

Clashes broke out between the YPG and ISIS after the latter attacked the Jibisa gas facility near Shaddadi.

“ISIS jihadists attacked a YPG checkpoint in Jibisa with mortar shells. The Kurdish fighters responded by bombing ISIS positions near Margada–south of Shaddadi,” YPG officer Habun Osman told ARA News.

After nearly three hours of clashes, the YPG forced ISIS militants to withdraw towards their stronghold of Margada town.

Margada is the Islamic State’s last stronghold in Hasakah Governorate. It is located on the administrative border between Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor Governorates.

In February, 2016, ISIS was driven out of Shaddadi city in southern Hasakah. The advance came after the YPG and allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) cut off a main ISIS supply route –known as al-Hawl– through Syria’s northeastern border with Iraq.

Also in February, the US-backed SDF seized control of the Islamic State’s main financial resource in Hasakah Governorate, the Jibisa gas facility. This petrochemical plant used to feed massive power stations in Syria’s central governorates.

ISIS had been in control of the Jibisa gas facility for nearly two years, retrofitting it to produce portable gas cylinders which were then sold on the black market. Analysts told ARA News that at its peak, ISIS was producing 5,000 cylinders per day at Jibisa.

75 years ago: The Battle of Coral Sea
The Battle of the Coral Sea fought from 4–8 May 1942, was a major naval battle between the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and naval and air forces from the United States and Australia, taking place in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The battle is historically significant as the first action in which aircraft carriers engaged each other, as well as the first in which neither side's ships sighted or fired directly upon the other.

In an attempt to strengthen its defensive position in the South Pacific, Japan decided to invade and occupy Port Moresby (in New Guinea) and Tulagi (in the southeastern Solomon Islands). The plan to accomplish this was called Operation MO, and involved several major units of Japan's Combined Fleet. These included two fleet carriers and a light carrier to provide air cover for the invasion forces. It was under the overall command of Japanese Admiral Shigeyoshi Inoue.

The U.S. learned of the Japanese plan through signals intelligence, and sent two United States Navy carrier task forces and a joint Australian-American cruiser force to oppose the offensive. These were under the overall command of American Admiral Frank J. Fletcher.

On 3–4 May, Japanese forces successfully invaded and occupied Tulagi, although several of their supporting warships were sunk or damaged in surprise attacks by aircraft from the U.S. fleet carrier Yorktown. Now aware of the presence of U.S. carriers in the area, the Japanese fleet carriers advanced towards the Coral Sea with the intention of locating and destroying the Allied naval forces. Beginning on 7 May, the carrier forces from the two sides engaged in airstrikes over two consecutive days. On the first day, the U.S. sank the Japanese light carrier Shōhō; meanwhile, the Japanese sank a U.S. destroyer and heavily damaged a fleet oiler (which was later scuttled). The next day, the Japanese fleet carrier Shōkaku was heavily damaged, the U.S. fleet carrier Lexington critically damaged (and later scuttled), and Yorktown damaged. With both sides having suffered heavy losses in aircraft and carriers damaged or sunk, the two forces disengaged and retired from the battle area. Because of the loss of carrier air cover, Inoue recalled the Port Moresby invasion fleet, intending to try again later.

#1  ...And with Shoho gone, and Shokaku crippled, Japan was short two carriers - and hundreds of priceless aircraft and aviators - a month later off a nondescript little island called Midway.

The US had two extra carriers in the Atlantic - Wasp and Ranger - (and Lexington's sister ship Saratoga was still in repair after being torpedoed) but they were needed there for ASW work and to help the Royal Navy. Had six IJN carriers gone up against our three at Midway, history might be a tad different...

#2  Just think how much more quickly we would have defeated the Japanese if our crews had had proper diversity training.

Also, at the time we seemed to be hung up on this whole "victory" thing. Let us not forget the words of The Lightbringer:

"I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur," Obama told ABC News.

The fact that most IJN pilots were enlisted or Warrants not officers clearly expresses their view of pilots as a form of cannon fodder much as they viewed their infantry.

Two men suspected of involvement in Tanta bombing killed in shootout with police: Ministry
[AlAhram] Egyptian police have killed in a shootout two men suspected of involvement in a recent deadly attack on security forces in Egypt's Nile Delta city of Tanta, the Ministry of Interior said on Saturday.

In a statement on its official Facebook page, the ministry said that that the two men, who it identified as members of the "armed wing" of the banned Moslem Brüderbund, had been hiding in a farm near Tanta.

The ministry said the two men opened fire on security forces as they raided their hideout.

Police added that the two men manufactured and transported weapons and explosives for the krazed killer group Lewaa al-Thawra
...The Revolution Brigade, which along with Hasm (Decisiveness or Determination) is one of the fighting arms of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, established to fight back against the overthrow of President Morsi...
, which grabbed credit for the 1 April attack on a police training centre in Tanta that killed one person and injured 16 others.

The krazed killer groups Hasm and Lewaa El-Thawra, which were recently designated as terrorist groups, have grabbed credit for a number of deadly attacks on security forces in Cairo and other governorates.

Police have killed suspected turbans in similar shootouts during raids on hideouts in the past three years.

Criminal gangs slug it out in Sebha over carjacking
[Libya Herald] Sebha is tense today after gangland fighting yesterday supposedly between members of the Awlad Sulaiman and Mahamid tribes left a number of them dead. Estimates vary between six and 15 dead, however, the mayor of Sebha, Rafeh Hamed, has said that officials are not “not yet sure” about the exactly number. For its part, Sebha Medical Centre reports receiving six bodies yesterday.

The wounded are put at 12. The medical centre says that it had received none so far but feared that no injured had come because they feared they would be targeted even in the hospital if they went there.

The trouble started when a gang of Mahamid armed men tried to steal a car belonging to a member of the Awlad Sulaiman tribe, Yahia Aswaidat Al-Sulaimani, while he was heading to the Fajr (dawn) prayers. He resisted and was shot dead.

Members of the Awlad Sulaiman, intent on revenge, then went to the area in the town known as Camp 80, near the Manshia neighbourhood and attacked members of the Mahamid tribe based.

Clashes are reportedly still ongoing despite attempts by elders from other tribes to mediate a peace. Mayor Hamed has effectively confirmed this, saying that the situation was still “not resolved”. Latest reports say that two more people died in fighting today

However, he also said that the clashes had nothing to do with the two tribes, that those involved were simply gangland criminals and most of them from other countries Libya. Only two of the dead were known to be Libyans, he claimed.

The district known as Camp 80 is inhabited largely by people from Chad and Niger, but many of them were in fact originally from Libya who returned, following a call from Qaddafi, and settled in what was then a camp in 1980 – thus the name. It became overcrowded, squalid and poor but was re-laid out, with new roads and buildings, in the years immediately before the revolution.

129 Africa Migrants Mugged, Stranded at Sea off Libya
[An Nahar] Gunmen mugged 129 migrants colonists on a rubber dinghy headed for Europe and also stole the craft's motor, abandoning them off the Libyan coast, Libya's navy said Saturday.

Navy front man General Ayoub Qassem said the gunnies in a speedboat chased the dinghy on Friday, boarded around five nautical miles off the Libyan town of Zuwara and stole the migrants colonists' possessions.

The migrants colonists from sub-Saharan Africa, including 27 women and two children, were stranded at sea for several hours before being rescued by Libyan coastguard alerted by a local fisherman, he told AFP.

Fifth Column
Fake Law
[WeeklyStandard] Something ugly is happening to the First Amendment. It is being contorted to enable judges to protest Donald Trump's presidency. The perennial impulse of judges to manipulate the law to achieve morally and politically desirable ends has only been exacerbated by the felt necessity to "resist" Trump. The result: Legal tests concerning the freedoms of speech and religion that in some cases were already highly dubious are being further deformed and twisted.

Welcome to the rise of fake law. Just as fake news spreads ideologically motivated misinformation with a newsy veneer, fake law brings us judicial posturing, virtue signaling, and opinionating masquerading as jurisprudence. And just as fake news augurs the end of authoritative reporting, fake law portends the diminution of law's legitimacy and the warping of judges' self-understanding of their constitutional role.

Those who try to police the relentlessly transformational projects of constitutional progressives had much to dread from the Obama administration, an inveterate ally of the legal left that did what it could to graft the aspirations of progressives onto the Constitution. But Trump's presidency may be even worse, because too many judges now feel called to "resist" Trump and all his works--no matter the cost to the law's authority and to the integrity of the judicial role.

In one recent deformation, Trump was sued for incitement to riot and assault and battery when, at a campaign rally before he became president, he said "Get 'em out of here" in response to protesters in the audience. Several of these protesters were subsequently pushed and struck by others in the crowd. A Kentucky federal district judge ruled that the case against Trump could proceed because "Get 'em out of here" could reasonably be interpreted as an exhortation to attack the protesters.

Growing lynch mobs
[DAWN] THE growing incidence of mob lynchings all over the country is grounds for concern. In the past fortnight alone, we have seen three horrific examples of angry mobs chasing individuals alleged to have committed blasphemy. The latest incident took place in Hub, Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
. However,
the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach...
it is not only those accused of blasphemy who are hunted down and often killed. There have been many incidents in which individuals suspected of being involved in theft have faced the mob’s wrath as in the tragic case of two brothers, wrongly identified as robbers, who were lynched in Sialkot some years ago. This is a dangerous trend and if allowed to continue, could reach a point where no one would be able to control the angry crowds.

Perhaps only a comprehensive study can identify all the causes for this kind of vigilantism. A broad canvas though would show that socioeconomic frustrations, the lack of access to justice, the religiosity and intolerance set in motion during the Zia regime and, critically, poor enforcement of the law have a large role in the making of today’s fanatical crowds that are ready to take matters into their own hands. And it is unfortunate that very often this tendency is opportunistically fanned by sections of the media especially with regard to blasphemy accusations.

Any solution to reverse this trend -- that has been years in the making -- would have to be multipronged. But first, the state must see the flaws of its own acts of commission and omission. As a beginning, the state must recognise that this tendency represents an erosion of its own writ. Only then would it be possible to take steps to correct it. Further, it must ask itself what has been done to alleviate socioeconomic challenges, and to strengthen the judiciary and police. It must also ask itself how far its own curriculum, with its overtones of bigotry and discrimination, is feeding into the problem. The larger problems of growing intolerance will take time and political will to resolve. But in the immediate term, a sobering of our national discourse is needed to soothe anxieties and calm the passions that ignite such mobs. The mass media has a critical role to play here, in sending out the message that no matter how powerful the provocation, taking the law into your hands is not justifiable under any circumstances. There must be no exceptions, and no caveats applied to this principle.

After Ban, Turkish Airlines to Offer Laptops to VIP Travelers
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Turkish Airlines on Saturday said it would offer laptops to business-class travelers after Britannia and the United States banned large electronic devices from the cabin of flights from certain countries.

Washington has barred all electronic devices larger a mobile phone on direct flights to the United States from 10 airports in seven Middle Eastern countries and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

, only allowing them to be transported in hold luggage.

Britannia followed with a similar ban from five countries in the Middle East and north Africa as well as Turkey.

But Turkish Airlines said it would offer travelers a solution.

"The national flag carrier has now started to offer laptops for its business class passengers on US-bound flights as from today," it said in a statement released on Saturday.

The airline would also offer the same service for UK-bound business class passengers from May 12.

Such passengers would be able to request a laptop from the cabin crew to use in-flight, it said.

The laptops would offer top security and protect the users’ privacy by "automatically deleting" all personal data after being shut down, it said.

Unusual police report against PM
[DAWN] In an unusual development, police have registered a report against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
for provoking people against the Pakistain Army and creating hatred against the armed forces.

It is worth noting that the report registered by the police is not a First Information Report or FIR. It is a report registered in the police diary, known in local parlance as roznamcha.

The one-page report was lodged by Advocate Ishtiaq Ahmed Mirza, chairman of the I.M. Pakistain, a political party which he claimed was registered with the Election Commission of Pakistain.

Mr Ahmed in his complaint said he was sitting at his office at the district courts when he received a WhatsApp clip at 12.47pm which showed a man making a speech. He said it was visible that the man delivering the speech was Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister, who was allegedly provoking people and creating hatred against the armed forces.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Ismail Haniyeh elected new head of Hamas
In which the expected is announced to have occurred.
[IsraelTimes] Haniyeh replaces Khaled Mashaal who served two terms as the terror group’s political bureau chief.

Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",’s former chief in the Gazoo Strip, Ismail Haniyeh
...became Prime Minister after the legislative elections of 2006 which Hamas won. President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from office on 14 June 2007 at the height of the Fatah-Hamas festivities, but Haniyeh did not acknowledge the decree and continues as the PM of Gazoo while Abbas maintains a separate PM in the West Bank...
, has been elected to lead the Paleostinian terror group, succeeding Khaled Mashaal, the organization announced Saturday.

Mashaal, who lives in exile in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
, has completed the maximum two terms in office. He became the leader of Hamas in 2004 following the Israeli liquidations of Hamas founders Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi.

"The Hamas Shura Council on Saturday elected Ismail Haniyeh as head of the movement’s political bureau," the group’s official website announced.

Haniyeh is expected to remain in the Gazoo Strip, though this may make it harder for him to manage the group’s international ties abroad, as traveling in and out of the Strip is difficult.

Haniyeh had long been seen as the leading candidate, with others in the running including Mashaal deputy Moussa Abu Marzouk and senior figure Muhammas Nazal.

Hamas front man Fawzi Barhoum said the group hoped Haniyeh’s election "would see opening to the region."

The 54-year-old takes charge of Hamas as it seeks to ease its international isolation. On Monday the group issued a new program that accepts the notion of a Paleostinian state in territories captured by Israel in the Six Day War of 1967 while still calling for the destruction of Israel.
Old milk in a new bottle.
Mashaal, 60, has led the Hamas political bureau since 1996. He is a veteran with close ties to regional powers Qatar, Egypt and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
. He has been key to Hamas’s attempts to break out of political isolation following its violent takeover of Gazoo.

Haniyeh: From refugee camp to Hamas leader

[IsraelTimes] Though seen as a relatively pragmatic voice in the group, he remains wholly committed to terrorism and ’liberation’ of Israel.

Haniyeh’s modest home in the narrow alleys of Gazoo City’s Shati refugee camp next to the Mediterranean Sea is under constant guard.
Sure, it's modest above ground. But it is the sprawling, luxurious tunnel complex underneath, never shown to international journalists, that really matters.
Also known as Abu Abed, he was born in the same camp in 1963 to parents who fled when Israel was created in 1948. They had previously lived in Ashkelon, in southern Israel near the border with the Gazoo Strip.
Yes, but how much longer than the required three years had they been in Ashkelon? Whether they arrived in 1944 or 944, they still were entitled to call themselves refugees.
Haniyeh, a father of 13, was educated at a UN-run refugee school, later earning an education degree from the Islamic University and becoming a university administrator.
In other words, he is steeped in indoctrination and doublespeak, with no leavening of reality.
Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, has frequently highlighted his modest background as a counterpoint to officials within the Paleostinian Authority who have been accused of being corrupt and too easily compliant with Israel or the United States.

Haniyeh was jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
several times by Israel during the first intifada, or uprising, which erupted in 1987, and was deported to southern Leb in December 1992 along with hundreds of Hamas and Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
members.

He first rose to prominence as bureau chief under Hamas’s spiritual father Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the holy man who advocated suicide kabooms against Israel and who was assassinated by Israel in 2004.

Haniyeh escaped liquidation in September 2003 when an Israeli aircraft bombed a house where he and Yassin were meeting.

In 2006 he led Hamas to a shock legislative election victory over Abbas’s Fatah and became prime minister. The international community however refused to deal with any government in which Hamas participated until it renounced violence and recognized Israel and past peace agreements, which it has never done.

The resulting deadlock led to mounting friction between Hamas and Fatah which culminated in Hamas’s seizure of Gazoo in 2007.

Mosul Offensive News

Iraqis capture Mesherfa region in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) The Nineveh Operations Command has declared full liberation of Mesherfa region in the wake of fierce clashes that occurred earlier on Saturday between Iraqi troops and Islamic State militants in western Mosul

“The 9th armored division freed Mesherfa al-Oula district, completing the liberation of the full region of Mesherfa after inflicting huge losses on the enemy in lives and equipments,” the command said in statements.

“The Iraqi flag has been raised above the building in the district,” the command added.

Earlier on Saturday, the Iraqi troops declared gaining full control on Hawi al-Kanisah region and taken over 50 percent of 17 Tamuz (July 17th) region in western Mosul.

On Thursday, the Iraqi armed forces announced recapturing Mesherfa al-Thaniya district on Friday and Mesherfa al-Thalitha on Thursday.

A new front for ground offensives was opened last week targeting IS’s strategic stronghold at the Old City region from the north, having found it difficult to invade the area from the south for weeks.

Eastern Mosul was recaptured in January after three months of battles against IS. A major offensive was launched in February to retake the western flank of the city.

Iraqi forces capture 2 nore regions in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi troops have gained full control on Hawi al-Kanisah region and taken over 50 percent of 17 Tamuz (July 17th) region in western Mosul.

“The Rapid Response forces now control 50 percent of 17 Tamuz region after killing more than 40 Islamic State militants, including 12 suicide attackers,” Brigadier General Mohamed al-Jabouri, of the Joint Operations Command, told BasNews.

“Safe passageways were opened by troops to allow exit of civilians,” he added.

Meanwhile, Captain Kadhim Hassan, of the army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service, said “the troops liberated Hawi al-Kanisah region from the militants, in addition to 16 surrounding farms and seizure of weapon stashes and factories.”

“CTS arrested eighteen militants, including leaders, during the liberation of the region,” he told BasNews.

Fierce clashes have reportedly occurred earlier on Saturday between Iraqi troops and Islamic State militants at western Mosul.

Iraqi Federal Police, backed by the fighter jets, heavily bombarded IS pockets in Mosul’s Old City, where around 4,000 families are besieged, according to the Kurdish-owned Rudaw network.

Two booby-trapping workshops were shelled in 17 Tamuz (July 17th) district, killing 10 IS militants who were inside. The confrontations are taking place at al-Zanjili and Hawi al-Kanisah regions.

The militants mounted stiff resistance in the northwest of Mosul in light of significant decline in attacks by booby-trapped vehicles against the troops.

Iraqi police forces made further advance on Friday through a new axis of operations against IS in western Mosul.

A new front for ground offensives was opened last week targeting IS’s strategic stronghold at the Old City region from the north, having found it difficult to invade the area from the south for weeks.

The Old City is home of the ancient Grand Nuri Mosque, from which the group’s Supreme Leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi gave a famous sermon in 2014 declaring the establishment of the ‘caliphate’

Eastern Mosul was recaptured in January after three months of battles against IS. A major offensive was launched in February to retake the western flank of the city.

Four injured in Indian firing along LoC, says ISPR
[DAWN] Four people, including two women and a child, were maimed on Saturday night when Indian border troops opened fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nakyal sector, said Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

"Indian troops committed ceasefire violation and targeted civilians with mortars," said a statement by the ISPR.

Barkat Begum, Ihsan Naseer, Farzana Kausar, and Naseer Ahmad were maimed as the result of Indian shelling.

All four belonged to the same family, officials told Dawn. The causalities occurred in Dharoti Mohra village in Nakyal sector of Kotli district, they added.

"One shell landed on a house at about 8 pm, injuring four family members," said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kotli Chaudhry Zulqarnain Sarfraz.

Two of the injured were shifted to Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Nakyal and the other two were rushed to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Kotli due to their critical condition, added the police official.

The ISPR said that Pak troops effectively responded to Indian shelling. The exchange of fire took place after a break of three weeks.

... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
have been freed in exchange for detained suspects with the bad boy group, Nigeria's government announced early Sunday, in the largest release negotiated yet in the battle to save nearly 300 girls whose mass abduction exposed the mounting threat posed by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
-linked fighters.

The statement from the office of President Muhammadu Buhari was the first confirmation that his government had made a swap for the girls. After an initial release of 21 Chibok girls in October, the government denied making an exchange or paying ransom.

The April 2014 abduction by Boko Haram brought the bad boy group's rampage in northern Nigeria to world attention and, for families of the schoolgirls, began years marked with heartbreak.

Many of the captive girls, most of them Christians, were forced to marry their captors and give birth to children in remote forest hideouts without ever knowing if they would see their parents again. It is feared that other girls were strapped with explosives and sent on missions as jacket wallahs.

Before Saturday's release, 195 of the girls had remained captive. Now 113 of the girls remain unaccounted for.

The freed girls were expected to meet with Buhari on Sunday in the capital, Abuja.

A Nigerian military official with direct knowledge of the rescue operation said the freed girls were found near the town of Banki in Borno state near Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
"The location of the girls kept changing since yesterday when the operation to rescue them commenced," said the official. Boko Haram remains active in that area.

On Friday, the United States and Britannia issued warnings that the bad boy group was actively planning to kidnap foreigners in an area of Borno state "along the Kumshe-Banki axis."

The 276 schoolgirls kidnapped from Chibok in 2014 are among thousands of people kidnapped by Boko Haram over the years. The mass abduction shocked the world, sparking a global #Bringbackourgirls campaign supported by former US first lady Michelle Obama and other celebrities. It has put tremendous pressure on Nigeria's government to counter the bad boy group, which has roamed large parts of the north and into neighboring countries.
Sure it did. That's why it took three years and an election on one side and ISIS replacing Abubakar Shekau in the other for a partial trade of bad guys for good girls to get done. But AyPee wanted to flatter the First World twiitterers who so quickly posted the message that they care, which was just as meaningful as the ice bucket challenge that preceded it, or the email campaign in the months before 9/11 telling the Taliban to give Afghan women Western civil rights.
The latest negotiations were again mediated by the Swiss government and the International Committee of the Red Thingy, Nigeria's government said. At the initial release of girls in October, the government said the release of another 83 would be coming soon. But at the three-year anniversary of the kidnapping in April, the government said negotiations had "gone quite far" but faced challenges.

More than 350 Pakistanis are languishing in US jails
[DAWN] More than 350 Paks are languishing in US jails under allegations of various offences, ranging from terrorism to violation of immigration laws, revealed a document issued by the Foreign Ministry in response to questions by a senator.
Everyone is equal under the law here. If only they'd not broken the law, they would not now be imprisoned.
According to the documents, a copy of which is available with DawnNews, 104 Pak citizens were serving prison sentences whereas 253 Paks are under trial.

Majority of the prisoners were in jail for violation of immigration laws while others were accused of terrorism, theft, burglary and fraud.

Dr. Aafia Siddiqui
...American-educated Pak cognitive neuroscientist who was convicted of assault with intent to murder her U.S. interrogators in Afghanistan. In September 2010, she was sentenced to 86 years in jug after a three-ring trial. Siddiqui, using the alias Fahrem or Feriel Shahin, was one of six alleged al-Qaeda members who bought $19 million worth of blood diamonds in Liberia immediately prior to 9-11-01. Since her incarceration Paks have taken her to their heart and periodically erupt into demonstrations, while the government tries to find somebody to swap for her...
, a Pak scientist, was sentenced to prison in 2007 for attacking US soldiers. Khalid Awan was facing imprisonment since 2006 for assisting an Indian terrorist organization, Shehwar Mateen and Abdul Naseer were imprisoned for allegedly planting a bomb, revealed the report.

The ministry presented a list of the prisoners, along with the nature of allegations levelled against them.

The report clarified that as soon as diplomatic missions are informed about the arrest of a Pak national, immediate consular access is requested and the relevant mission remains in contact with the national in prison and detention centres.

The ministry also claimed that regular consular visits are also arranged, adding that the missions also provide possible legal assistance, if requested.

"Most of the under trial prisoners/detainees usually sign a waiver at the time of their arrest surrendering their right to consular access with the intention to exhaust all possible legal avenues to stay in the United States even after completion of their sentences," the report said.

Maybe the various prison systems can pool their Pak inmates, set up a call center, and sell condo timeshares in Caracas.

Africa Subsaharan
Boko Haram Planning Foreign Kidnaps in NE Nigeria
[An Nahar] Britannia and the United States on Friday said Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
was preparing to kidnap foreigners in remote northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, which is in the grip of a food crisis caused by the conflict.

The Foreign Office in London said it had received reports the Islamist Lions of Islam were "actively planning" to seize foreign workers in the Bama local government area of Borno state.

Both said in travel advice that the affected area was "along the Banki-Kumshe axis", which is near the border with Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
The US embassy in Abuja said in a message to its nationals that the report was "credible".

Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of women and kiddies, including more than 200 schoolgirls from the Borno town of Chibok in 2014, which brought the conflict to world attention.

At least 20,000 people have been killed since 2009. But abductions of foreigners have been rare.

There was a spate of kidnappings of foreign workers in the wider north from 2011 to 2013, claimed by a Boko Haram splinter group, Ansaru, which was more ideologically aligned to al-Qaeda. The leader of Ansaru, Khalid al-Barnawi, has been charged with the abduction and murder of foreign workers, among them an Italian, a Briton, a German, Greek, Lebanese and Syrians. Most were engineers or construction workers.
But now Mr. al-Barnawi is aligned with ISIS, in charge of Boko Haram, and back to his old tricks, while Abubakar Shekau leads the splinter group and insists ISIS didn't really reject him.
International aid workers now account for the majority of foreign nationals in northeast Nigeria. Most are based in the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria Fighting Eases as Safe Zones Plan Begins
[An Nahar] Fighting subsided in Syria on Saturday after a deal signed by government backers Russia and Iran and rebel supporter The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
to create four safe zones began to take effect, a monitor said.

The zones still exist only on paper and the cosponsors have until June 4 to finalise their borders under the terms of the agreement struck at peace talks in Kazakhstan on Thursday.

But the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported only sporadic skirmishes and shelling early on Saturday in the areas covered by the deal.

"Apart from a few exchanges and bombardments during the night and in the morning in Hama, Damascus and Aleppo provinces, violence was sharply reduced in the areas covered by the deal," Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

The agreement covers four main battlegrounds between the government and non-jihadist rebels -- the northwestern province of Idlib, parts of Homs province in the centre, the south, and the opposition enclave of Eastern Ghouta near Damascus.

It provides for a ceasefire, a no-fly zone, rapid deliveries of humanitarian aid to the designated areas and the return of refugees.

It builds on a ceasefire agreed between Russia and Turkey last December that reduced violence for a period but gradually fell apart.

The new proposal is significantly more ambitious, proposing the deployment of monitoring forces from the guarantor countries and seeking to ground all warplanes.

Some of its terms are ambiguous -- it does not specify that the safe zones take effect immediately but gives the three guarantor countries two weeks to form working groups to delineate them and then until June 4 to come up with the definitive boundaries.

It also calls for a continued fight against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group and former al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham
...formerly al-Nusra, the current false nose and mustache of al-Qaeda in the Levant...
Front, which could pose challenges.

In Idlib province in particular, Fateh al-Sham is a major component of the rebel forces that control the area.

Washington has given the deal a guarded welcome. UN chief Antonio Guterres said he was "encouraged" by it.

Border firing ends as Afghan military admits mistake
[DAWN] ISLAMABAD: Hostilities on the border near Chaman ended late on Friday afternoon after a hotline conversation between Pakistain and Afghanistan’s directors general of military operations (DGMOs) during which the Afghan official admitted his side’s mistake in identifying the boundary in the area.

"Afghan director general, military operations, acknowledged that border is in between villages and not at the ditch... as being perceived by them," an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement on the conversation between the DGMOs said. It noted that the Afghan official had agreed that the ditch was well inside Pak territory.

Tense calm in Hub after protest over ‘blasphemy’
[DAWN] KHUZDAR: Trade and business activities partially remained suspended in Hub, the industrial town of Lasbela district, on Friday following tension over Thursday’s violent protest which had left a 12-year-old boy dead and some police officials injured.

A protest erupted in the city on Thursday after a 29-year-old minority community trader was accused of sharing blasphemous content on social media. It turned violent when police refused to hand over the suspect -- who was in their custody -- to angry protesters gathered outside the cop shoppe.

On Friday, personnel of police, Frontier Corps

and other security agencies provided tight security to the Hindu population living in the town.

Deputy Commissioner of Lasbella Mujeebur Rehman visited Hindu localities in the town. Some protesters staged a sit-in at the town’s Seerat Chowk for a while, but they dispersed when security personnel reached there.

Lasbela’s District Police Officer Zia Mandokhail told Dawn that cases had been registered against some people who were involved in Thursday’s violence, adding that they were identified through CCTV camera footage.

Commissioner of Kalat division Hashim Ghilzai visited Hindu communities in Uthal and Bela in Lasbela district. He also visited some temples in the district and expressed solidarity with members of the Hindu community.

He said personnel of law enforcement agencies would provide them security.

He thanked media personnel for responsible reporting during the crisis.

Talking to journalists, the deputy commissioner said the blasphemy suspect was in police custody and a case had been registered against him.

He said the administration would take action against those who would break the law and incite people to violence.

Talking about Thursday’s incident, he said the police had to use force when the unruly mob turned violent.

The deputy commissioner appealed to the people of the town to remain peaceful and respect the law. He also appealed to religious leaders to play their role in the restoration of peace in the town.

Fifth Column
Some of the far left are tired, throwing up their hands in frustration.
[Caucus99Percent] Debbie from Sane Progressive posted a 2 hour long rant which she soon deleted. From the half-hour I was able to catch before then it was obvious she was....tired. She wasn't the only one. Many other activists have thrown up their hands and quit because they feel like they have no way to fight back.

We can't protest because the paramilitary police will gun you down while using the corporate media to vilify the protesters.
F'in seriously? These people actually believe this. After the Berkeley Anti-Free-Speech Riots were allowed to continue by the chief of police and the mayor.
Strike? Same thing. And in both cases, because this entire shit country is so polarized, there's no way in hell anyone would be able to rally enough people to participate.
No, it's because nobody will rally behind you because you're America-hating assholes.
We can't vote either because the bourgeoisie control the scope of opinion, the candidates, the parties, etc. Not to mention that despite the fact that only 25 percent of the voting population identifies as D or R, too many people still make the 'choice' between the turd sandwich and the diarrhea soup for any meaningful change to take place. Boycott? Again, no one could ever get enough people to participate, at least in 'Murica.
Fuck you for that 'shit country' remark. This is why nobody likes you.
But what about that lawsuit against the DNC? Please. Their fuckin' lawyer pulled a literal Donald Trump/Mitt Romney when they said 'Oh yeah, we could decide the nominee in a back room over cigars and the voters can't do shit.'
LOL
I don't have any solutions of my own and my frustration exhausts everyone around me, so why bother? After all, the only time anyone in this shit country seems to do anything is when the shit hits the fan...no, wait, I take that back. The 2008 crash happened and all people did was whine about big gubmint and 'freeloaders and illegals on welfare' while their savings, pensions and wages were looted to bail out the bourgeoisie.
As I recall, the small banks and the bourgeoisie, that is to say the working middle class, were looted to bail out the Wall Street firms and the big banks. But anyone who talks about the bourgeoisie in this way is a Marxist of some sort, and by definition wrong about absolutely everything.
The same thing happened with the installation of Dipshit Trump by Billary Clinton and friends. Oh sure, there were plenty of astroturf divisive identity protests led by old guard board room 'feminists' like Gloria Steinem and Madeline Albright (Hell, I'm surprised Christina Hoff Summers didn't join them on stage) and the like while real leaders like Kshama Sawant
...a local Trotskyite Socialist politician in Seattle who was born and got a degree in computer science in Mumbai/Bombay, India, but she was only shocked into action by the poverty she saw in America. She entered politics as a local Occupy organizer; since being elected to city council only her effort toward the $15/hour minimum wage has been successful, which makes her exactly the kind of spokeswoman current Feminism should have...
were outright ignored. And don't forget the continued vilification of Bernie Sanders as a white male only candidate despite multiple studies and polls now saying the exact opposite (Actually, Sanders had a bigger coalition than Billary ever did).

Oh yeah...I'd almost forgotten about Bernie. I'm glad I mentioned him because I'd love to scream right in his face too. He refused to contest the blatant fraud. He refused to walk away and join up with Jill Stein and the Greens. He would have taken plenty of voters with him as well, more than enough to be a threat to the ClinTrump corporate war machine, I'd wager. But now we have him running around on the Subjugation...I mean, Unity tour with that slimeball Tom Perez because 'we have to take them down from within' he says. Oh, and 'RUSSIARUSSIARUSSIA'. Right. And I'm Ulfric fuckin' Stormcloak.
Perhaps not wrong about everything...
The people of this idiot shit country will never see decent governance or living standards unless they're willing to fight and die for them in some cases. And too many are too damned comfortable to care. Too many have forgotten about the struggles, suffering and death that happened over centuries to get what little has been whittled away by Reagan and friends.

So, since we can't work and fight alongside each other in solidarity, I guess we'll all just hang separately.
The comments are worth reading, too.

Trying to stop West Bank shooting attacks, the IDF goes for the guns
[IsraelTimes] 12 months of raiding weapon workshops quintuples cost of home-made submachine guns, making them far less accessible for spontaneous terrorist acts.

The IDF has a simple theory on how to stop shooting attacks in the West Bank: Get rid of the guns.

Since 2015, the army has been on what some might regard as a quixotic mission to rid the West Bank of illegally made and traded weapons, raiding suspected gunsmithing workshops and warehouses on an almost weekly basis. The campaign is not regarded as a quick fix, but it has already led to a sharp rise in the cost to forces of Evil of acquiring such weapons.

Afghanistan
Hizb-e-Islami Names 3,500 Fighters For Security Departments
[Tolo News] The political council of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
’s Hizb-e-Islami on Saturday said they have drawn up a list of 3,500 names of Hizb-e-Islami fighters whom they want recruited into the security departments.
This will not end well.
According to them, the first phase of 100 men have already been introduced to the joint commission implementing the peace deal.

Karim Amin, a member of Hizb-e-Islami political council said over 50 of these fighters have ranks within Hizb-e-Islami of Colonel, Brigadier General and higher.

"Half of the 100 military officers that have been introduced in the first phase are ranked colonels, Brigadier Generals and higher than that. Out of these 100 officers, there are lots of other Generals that have received the ranks through the usual military process and some others have received ranks from Hekmatyar when he was working as prime minister of the country," said Karim.

According to the peace deal signed between Afghan government and Hizb-e-Islami, late last year, qualified men and military commanders of Hizb-e-Islami who are keen to serve in security institutions will be integrated into the government's system.

The commission implementing the peace deal meanwhile said the first group which is made up of 80 men has been introduced to the defense ministry to be recruited, and right now the MoD is running background checks on them.

"Ten days ago we received the primary list from Hizb-e-Islami which includes 80 men and they have worked in the defense minister 22 to 23 years ago," said Ahmad Farzan, head of strategic relations committee of the peace deal oversight commission.

Ministry of Defense (MoD) meanwhile said the officers’ recruitment depends on government's strategy.

"There are principles for recruiting soldiers, officers and higher-ranking officials. They are also Afghans and can be included in security forces, but it should be in accordance with the policies," Dawlat Waziri, MoD front man said.

Fawzia Kofi, a member of parliament commentating on the issue said: "Government should disarm them and they should lay down their weapons to ensure us that we truly have reached social peace. If they want to take part in maintaining peace, then they should be arranged in security departments."

According to the constitution, active political parties in the country should not be involved in military activities. Hizb-e-Islami also agreed in terms of the peace deal that its military structure will be dissolved.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the exact number of Hizb-e-Islami fighters is still unclear.

Looting Ravages Venezuela, Unrest Death Toll Hits 36
[An Nahar] A young man died Friday after he was injured in violence as looting broke out in impoverished Venezuelan cities, an official said, bringing the toll from unrest in more than a month of anti-government protests to at least 36.

Hecder Lugo Perez, 22, died after he was hit in the head by a projectile in the northwestern city of Valencia, sources at the Valles de San Diego medical clinic said. City Mayor Enzo Scarano confirmed his death.

Mass protests erupted on April 1 by demonstrators demanding elections to remove President Nicolas Maduro. They blame him for an economic crisis that has caused shortages of food, medicine and other basics.

Anger boiled over Friday in the western municipality of Rosario de Perija, where young protesters burned, pulled down and then smashed a statue of former president Hugo Chavez, Maduro's late predecessor and mentor, according to video posted on social media showing the incident in a public square.

Looting broke out this week in cities such as Valencia, which looked like a disaster zone with bars on shop windows bent and windows broken.

"There was a crowd of them. They broke through the walls and took everything. They destroyed everything" before police came and fired tear gas to disperse the looters, said Nuvia Torrealba, 42, who worked in a bakery.

"My bosses have lost their home and we are out of a job. It was horrible."

Residents were stockpiling food, water and fuel. At least 70 stores have been raided since Tuesday, the Valencia chamber of commerce said.

"They are taking advantage of the protests to go out and rob," said Magaly Oliveros, a 64-year-old housewife in Valencia.

"Today we are hungry, and tomorrow we will be hungrier still because there is nothing."

- Army allegations -Maduro is resisting opposition demands for elections.

Each side accuses the other of using gangs to sow violence in the demonstrations.

Maduro has the public backing of the military high command, which analysts say is key to resisting the protests.

However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
senior opposition leader Henrique Capriles said on Friday that 85 mid-ranking army officers have been detained for opposing moves to crack down on protesters.

He cited information he said was given by the officers' families.

- Weekend protests -Maduro's opponents called for women to march on Saturday dressed in white, a traditional show of defiance against what they brand a repressive government.

"The regime is falling," said Lilian Tintori, wife of incarcerated
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, outside the prison near Caracas where she was demanding to see her husband.

"It has no strength and is showing its worst side, using weapons because it is does not have right on its side."

The president has launched moves to reform the constitution, further angering the opposition, which says he is trying to dodge elections.

He says the economic crisis is a US-backed conspiracy to topple him and install a right-wing government.

"We will not let a fascist regime be set up here," said Elias Jaua, the official appointed to lead a presidential commission on the constitutional reforms.

Capriles said the opposition will take no part in the constitutional discussions.

The celebrity Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, added his voice to calls for an end to the violence on Thursday.

He called for Maduro to "listen to the voice of the Venezuelan people", in a message posted on Facebook.

Moroccan Cleric Defies Taboo on Women's Inheritance
[An Nahar] A former radical preacher is the unlikely instigator of a debate on a topic long seen as off-limits in Moslem-majority Morocco: women's inheritance rights.

The country's Islamic family laws allocate female heirs half the amount men receive on the death of a relative.

Abdelwahab Rafiki, a former hardline holy man who served time in jail following jihadist bombings in Casablanca, says it is time that changed.

"I invite... religious scholars, sociologists and human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
actors to open a dialogue, primarily in order to uphold justice," he said.

Rafiki, also known as Abou Hafs, was one of around 100 male writers, journalists and artists who published a book in April called "Men defend equality in inheritance".

He also appeared on a prime-time television show on the popular 2M channel, arguing that the social roles of men and women had changed since the early days of Islam, meaning it was time for a debate on inheritance rules.

Since his TV appearance, he said, "I have been threatened with death and excommunicated, but I also received many messages of support".

The 43-year-old was once regarded as a leader of the Salafist-jihadist movement in Morocco.

He was among 8,000 people jugged
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
after jihadist bombings in Casablanca in 2003 killed 45 people.

- Death threats -
Sentenced to 30 years in prison, he was pardoned in 2012. Last year he stood for election to parliament representing Istiqlal, a conservative nationalist party.

His efforts to spark a debate on inheritance have won him plaudits from the liberal media and condemnation from his former peers.

"Thanks to 2M and Abou Hafs, a new step has been taken in Morocco: equality between men and women in matters of inheritance can now be raised in the public sphere," local site Medias 24 said.

Weekly magazine TelQuel said he had begun "dismantling one by one the dogmas of radical Islam".

But Abou Hafs has also received anonymous death threats on social media and been expelled from a national organization for religious scholars.

He has been denounced by the likes of Mohammed Fizazi and Hassan Kettani, preachers who were also placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
and later pardoned after the Casablanca attacks.

"He didn't just turn his coat inside out, he tore it up," Fizazi said.

Kettani said inheritance rules were not just a "red line" but an "impassable wall".

Islamic scholars argue that the Koran allocates women half the inheritance given to male heirs because men are responsible for protecting women and providing for them.

- Religious interpretation -
They say the rules were a major improvement on women's rights in pre-Islamic Arabia.
Sure, but that was more than 1,300 years ago. Much has changed since then.
But Abou Hafs argues that the issue is open to "ijtihad" -- the process of interpretation by religious scholars.

"The issue of inheritance must be consistent with evolutions in society" in order to "protect" Islam, he told AFP.

It is not the first time the subject has triggered controversy.

In 2015 Morocco's official National Council of Human Rights (CNDH) called for women to be guaranteed the same inheritance rights as men, arguing that "unequal inheritance legislation" made women more vulnerable to poverty.

Outraged conservatives rejected any debate on the issue and the ruling Justice and Development Party (PJD) slammed the organization for its "irresponsible recommendation".

But Nouzha Skalli, a former women's rights minister, said the lines are moving.

"Until recently, the question was taboo -- you couldn't even debate the subject," she said.

"As soon as you said the word 'inheritance' you were accused of blasphemy. Today, the debate can be held openly."

"The time has come to break the taboo, which hides major injustices against women," she said. "The Koran says that God is against injustice."

IS decapitates father, two sons in Sinai border town
[IsraelTimes] The decapitated bodies of a father and his two sons recently kidnapped by Islamic holy warriors were found on Saturday lying in the street in the northern Sinai town of Rafah, according to security officials and witnesses -- the latest grotesque act of brutality in the country’s long-running insurgency.

They said the mother of the two siblings was killed last week by members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group when they raided the family home in the village of Yamit, west of Rafah, and kidnapped the three men they suspect of being collaborators.

The three decapitated bodies found Saturday were taken to hospital, where they were identified and prepared for burial, according to the officials and witnesses, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media and feared reprisals, respectively.

IS is spearheading an insurgency in northern Sinai, where there has recently been an uptick in the abduction and killing of suspected informants. The brutal killings are meant to serve as a deterrent to would-be collaborators.

Lately, the holy warriors have targeted Egypt’s minority Christians, forcing hundreds of them to flee their homes in northern Sinai after killing several of them there. Since December, it has targeted three churches -- one in Cairo and two north of the Egyptian capital -- with suicide kabooms that killed at least 45.

An IS leader in Egypt vowed this week to escalate attacks against Christians, urging Moslems to steer clear of Christian gatherings and western embassies as they are targets of their group’s hard boys.

"Targeting the churches is part of our war on infidels," the unidentified leader said in a lengthy interview published by the group’s al-Nabaa newsletter on Thursday. He said churches, security posts and institutions, as well as places where "crusader nationals of western countries" gather were all "legitimate targets."

Bangladesh
BNP vice-chairman meets Hefazat chief Shafi
[Dhaka Tribune] Bangladesh Nationalist Party Vice-Chairman Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin called on Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
chief Shah Ahmed Shafi on Friday.

The meeting coincided with the four-year anniversary of the mayhem caused by the radical Islamist group at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on May 5, 2013.

Mir Nasir spent some time with Shafi at al-Jamaatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam Madrasa at Hathazari in Chittagong.

The surprise visit of the BNP leader, however, fuelled swirling speculation in the media when the top brass of BNP are quite vocal against the recent AL-Hefazat ties.

When asked for his comment over the visit, Mir Nasir told the Dhaka Tribune that it was merely a regular visit.

"As you know, both of us are residents of Hathazari area. I never miss the opportunity to meet him [Shafi] whenever I pay a visit to my village. This is purely a personal visit and there is nothing political about it," said Mir Nasir.

"I have known him for more than 50 years. Shafi is ailing, so I enquired after his health," added Nasir, who served as the state minister for civil aviation and tourism during BNP’s tenure.

Anas Madani, Hefazat central publicity secretary and son of Shafi, Munir Ahmed, press secretary to Hefazat chief, Nur Mohammad and Solaiman Manju, convener and member secretary of Hathazari upazila unit of BNP, Moslem Uddin, joint convener among others also attended the meeting.

ISIS drone being used to direct artillery in Deir Ezzor
Deir Ezzor (SyriaNews.media) A source revealed that five persons were either killed or wounded in a shelling carried out by the Islamic State group on al-Qossour neighborhood in the city of Deir Ezzor, using drones, Syria News reported on Saturday.

The source said that terrorists of the Islamic State group bombed the residential area in al-Qossour (Palaces) neighborhood, using drones, killing a child and wounding four persons.

Noteworthy, the Islamic State group is trying to weaken the efforts of the residents of Deir Ezzor, who support the Syrian Arab Army in its war against the Takfiri group, while besieging thousands of civilians inside the city and bombing them using rockets and mortar shells.

Iraq
4 ISIS Bad Guys die in fighting in Kirkuk
Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Four Islamic State militants were killed during clashes that erupted near Hawija district, southwestern Kirkuk, according to a local source.

“Armed clashes occurred on Saturday between IS fighters of Hawija and other militants from Diyala province,” the source said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added that “the clashes occurred after an IS leader from Diyala killed an IS member from Hawija.”

The clashes left four members killed.

East Dijla Operations Command declared last week that operations to be launched soon to drive IS militants out of Hawija.

Dozens of residents from Hawija and the regions in its vicinity escape to Kirkuk province on a daily basis. Despite the risky routes to the freed regions, the civilians prefer death to staying under IS control.

Hawija, located 55 KM west of Kirkuk, has been held by IS since mid-2014.

Russia: US Welcomed Syria De-Escalation Zones Deal, Has All Information on Memorandum
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Russia said on Saturday that the United States has welcomed the outcome of the recent round of the Syria settlement talks held in Astana this week.

During an interview with the Mir television channel, Russian Foreign minister said that the US itself has proposed to stop violence in Syria.

"The United States itself has proposed to stop violence in the areas hit by the most severe festivities between the [Syrian] government and [the country’s] armed opposition in order to create conditions for the safety of civilians. And it is not a coincidence that the United States has welcomed the result of the Astana meeting -- an agreement to create de-escalation zones," Lavrov said.

The city of Astana has already held four rounds of negotiations between the Syrian government and armed opposition in order to settle the conflict in the Middle Eastern country.

#1  Debka file reports that the talks included the possibility of Russian, Turkish and Iranian officers presence in the no fly safty zone in the bordering the Golan heights.
Very slim chance that Israel will be able to agree to that because it will mean a free and safe zone for arming Hizballa by Iran.
If this actually materializes, I expect a lot of "unknown" aircraft activity in the region.

Man ‘kills’ niece
She's "dead" now.
[DAWN] An 18-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her uncle on Friday in Fauji Colony, Pirwadhai, when her father turned down his offer of her marrying his son.

The dear departed was engaged to Wajid, a son of her uncle, who is suspected of having killed her.

However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
her father refused to marry her off to Wajid as he had polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
According to preliminary investigations, the victim’s father, Khalid Khan, had broken off the engagement and promised his daughter to a son of his younger brother.

Khalid found his daughter dead in her room on Friday and he said in his statement that two of his brothers who lived in the same house as him had told him that their brother had killed his daughter and fled.

The police said the victim’s body was handed over to her parents after a post-mortem was conducted and an investigation was launched.

Iran Army Criticises Rouhani's Missile Comments
[An Nahar] Iran's armed forces warned President Hassan Rouhani against discussing the country's defense program after he criticized the anti-Israel slogans written on the side of ballistic missiles, local media reported on Saturday.

During an election debate on Friday, Rouhani took the rare step of criticising the elite Revolutionary Guards for the provocative messages they wrote on ballistic missiles before testing them.

"We saw how they wrote slogans on missiles and showed underground (missile) cities to disrupt the JCPOA (nuclear deal)," he said during the debate, which comes ahead of the May 19 election.

Armed Forces front man General Masoud Jazayeri responded that the missile programme had "no connection" to the nuclear deal.

"We again stress and recommend the presidential candidates to avoid controversial entries into important and sensitive military and defence issues of the country and giving false information to people," said Jazayeri, according to the website of state broadcaster IRIB.

"The existence of underground missile sites are an important deterrent factor against the sworn enemies of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran and the nation," Jazayeri added.

Iran says its ballistic missile tests are part of its legitimate defence programme and are not a violation of the 2015 deal, under which it agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for an end to certain sanctions.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Islamic Jihad Rejects Palestine State within 1967 Borders
Israel is smarter about this than the Crusader states were, guys. But then, they're the aboriginal people.
[ENGLISH.ALMANAR.LB] Paleostinian resistance group Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
reiterated its stance on a Paleostinian state limited to the 1967 borders.

The announcement comes few days after other Paleostinian resistance movement, Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, unveiled a new policy document, announcing it accepts the creation of a Paleostinian state in the West Bank, east al-Quds (Jerusalem) and Gazoo, the territories occupied by the Zionist entity in the Six-Day War of 1967.

Islamic Jihad’s deputy leader, Ziad al-Nakhala said his movement rejects what he described as Hamas’s new policy of easing its stand on the Zionist entity.

"As partners with our Hamas brothers in the struggle for liberation, we feel concern over the document" which the main Islamist movement that rules Gazoo adopted on Monday, said Islamic Jihad’s deputy leader, Ziad al-Nakhala.

"We are opposed to Hamas’s acceptance of a state within the 1967 borders and we think this is a concession which damages our aims," he said on Islamic Jihad’s website.

Nakhala said the new Hamas policy formally accepting the idea of a state in the territories occupied by the Zionist entity in the 1967 Six-Day War would "lead to deadlock and can only produce half-solutions".
