The 7 Big Takeaways From The Comey Hearing
[Town Hall] The Comey hearings were always destined to be a Rorschach Test where each side saw what it wanted to see. That being said, reality doesn’t change because of partisan leanings and ultimately, Comey’s public comments turned out to be good for Trump.

1) Despite Multiple Anonymous Reports To The Contrary, Comey Did Tell Trump 3 Times That He Wasn’t Under Investigation In The Russia Probe: Numerous outlets, but most prominently CNN reported that Comey’s testimony would contradict Trump’s claim that Comey told him on three separate occasions that he wasn’t under investigation. As it turns out, Trump was right and the anonymous reports were wrong. Again.

2) The Conspiracy Theory That Says Trump Colluded With Russia To Somehow Steal The Election From Hillary Clinton Is Now Dead: Not only did Comey thoroughly shoot down the idea that Trump was being investigated in the Russia probe, he explicitly denied stories based on anonymous sources that said Trump colluded with the Russians. He added, "Yes, there have been many, many stories based on -- well, lots of stuff but about Russia that are dead wrong." Read it and weep, conspiracy theorists.

3) Loretta Lynch Interfered In The Clinton Investigation: Comey said he was "concerned" that Obama’s Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, asked him to publicly call the criminal investigation of Clinton a "matter" instead. This matched rhetoric used by the Clinton campaign and Comey said he had a problem with it because, "I don't know whether it was intentional or not but it gave the impression that the attorney general was looking to align the way we talked about our work with the way it was describing that. It was inaccurate." Despite the fact that Comey was "concerned" and felt it was "inaccurate," he did as Lynch asked, which doesn’t exactly speak well of his honesty or impartiality.

Trump's Cheese In The Maze Strategy
...
"How do you like how we’re flooding the zone?" Bannon asked me. Indeed that perfectly described it. The initiatives were so varied, so widespread, that none could be isolated without giving up on all the others, and therefore, none could be attacked with Alinsky tactics.

But the genius of what followed is still either ignored by even "conservative" writers, or not understood at all. Team Trump also understood that they needed a window of a few months to lay the groundwork for all of this, to get the necessary people in place, and to begin drafting all the paperwork necessary. Their biggest enemy was the leak. If word began leaking out to Republicans, especially, who could be harassed, lobbied, and bullied before the whole package was drafted, many pieces would never see the light of day.

Sometime in this period, I’m convinced Trump (but most likely Trump and Bannon, because this is pure Anti-Alinskyism at work) came up with the "Cheese in the Maze" deception program. The idea was to constantly leak stories of chaos or disaffection within Team Trump in order to get the Fake News media chasing those rather than the policy stories. Hence, the "Bannon-Kushner fight," "Trump Furious with Sessions," "Bannon on the outs," "McMaster Seeking a Coup," and, the latest, "Sessions Considers Resigning." At no time did I ever get confirmation from within Team Trump that any one of these was even remotely true--but on the other hand I couldn’t get Team Trump to admit to the "cheese in the maze" strategy. Nevertheless, along with "Muh Russia," the Fake News media was 100% absorbed in what were essentially National Enquirer headlines while oblivious to the earthquake under their feet.

#1  Amazing if true. Bannon has been very quiet since the "he lost the power struggle with Kushner" story. Kinda wondered if he was there at all. I sure hope this is all true. Crossing my fingers.

#2  Even if true, too slow. Every Obama appointee should have been replaced by now. Trump should be signing executive orders all day every day until his fingers bleed. Sure, the courts will knock out some, but he can sign faster than they can rule. (Actually, I'd rather see Trump signing new bills produced by Congress, but we seem to have a lack of enthusiasm there.) We can't count on anything past next year's mid-terms.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Joe Biden's Niece Steals more than $100K, Gets Off with Slap on the Wrist
[The LID] "The wild-child niece of former Veep Joe Biden stole more than $100,000 in a credit card scam -- and quietly cut a plea deal in Manhattan court that spares her any jail time, The Post has learned.

"Using a borrowed credit card, the blonde Caroline Biden set up an unauthorized customer account at Bigelow Pharmacy on Sixth Avenue in Greenwich Village, and racked up the six-figure bill over the course of a year, according to a criminal complaint that does not name the victim card owner.
"As part of a plea deal before Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Kevin McGrath, Biden, 29, pleaded guilty to one charge of grand larceny and another of petit larceny and agreed to make restitution of $110,810.04.

"If she pays everything back and keeps her nose clean, she can return to court and enter a substitute plea to a lower, misdemeanor charge of petit larceny and be sentenced to two years probation."

Judge Jeanine: Comey Spinning 'A Conspiracy Worthy of a Greek Tragedy' (Video)
[FOX] In her Opening Statement, Judge Jeanine Pirro said that former FBI Director James Comey is engaged in a "conspiracy worthy of a Greek tragedy."

Pirro called it the "greatest political hoax since Eve convinced Adam to eat that apple."

The "hoax," she said, "being spun by Jim Comey [is] a conspiracy worthy of a Greek tragedy."

She said that Comey was so concerned with his own public persona that he willingly acted in his own self-interest rather than that of the nation.

NYC Play Appears to Depict Assassination of President Trump
[FOX] A New York City play appears to depict President Trump being brutally stabbed to death by women and minorities, Fox & Friends reported.

In this year's "Shakespeare in the Park" in Central Park, the protagonist looks very similar to the tall, blond businessman elected president in 2016.

Guy Benson said that while Trump is not named in the play, the fact that his wife is depicted with a "Slavic accent" and he is being stabbed by women and minorities gives it away.

"I'm sure that's not an accident," Benson said.

Who do theater-goers have to thank for this Trump-centric work? Here’s a passage from the “Corporate Partners” page on the Public Theater website (emphasis added):

We offer sponsorship opportunities which enhance awareness and visibility of your brand, targeted activations, and provide opportunities for client entertainment, unique experiences and exciting benefits for employees. Year-round, season, or program-specific sponsorships can include a multitude of customizable benefits based on a corporation’s needs and initiatives. Whether it’s entertaining clients at Free Shakespeare in the Park…”

The New York Times did not return a request for comment for this report as of press time.

Africa Subsaharan
The American Architects of The South-African Catastrophe
[Mercer writes for the Austrian Mises Institute] Yes, it has happened. A mere 23 years after the 1994 transition, in South Africa, to raw ripe democracy, six years following the publication of a wide-ranging analysis of that catastrophe, Into the Cannibal's Pot: Lessons for America from Post-Apartheid South Africa, a Beltway libertarian think tank has convened to address the problem that is South Africa.

The reference is to an upcoming CATO "Policy Forum," euphemized as "South Africa at a Crossroad." One of the individuals to headline the "Forum" is Princeton Lyman, described in a CATO email tease as having "served as the U.S. Ambassador to South Africa at the time of the transfer of power from white minority to black majority." At the "Forum," former ambassador Lyman will be discussing "America’s original hopes for a new South Africa and the extent to which America’s expectations have been left unfulfilled." (Italics added.)

The chutzpah!

The CATO Institute’s disappointment in the South Africa the United States helped bring about is nothing compared to the depredations suffered by South Africans, due to America’s insistence that their country pass into the hands of a voracious majority. Unwise South African leaders acquiesced. Federalism was discounted. Minority rights for the Afrikaner, Anglo and Zulu were dismissed.

#1  In truth, the United States did not act alone and SA was not the first country to feel the impacts of African regime change. The entire transition began even before the final shots of WWII were fired. Author Martin Meredith lays out the events and chronology pretty well in 'The Fate of Africa, a histor of the Continent Since Independence.'

Money went to the inner circle. Oh; its spent alright, for what and to what we will never know.

Kamala Harris–Leftist Senator From California and Next Democratic Star
[Breitbart] Kamala Harris, California’s freshman senator and former state attorney general, has been quite the newsmaker in her short five months on Capitol Hill. She’s been dropping f-bombs, told to stop harassing witnesses at hearings, and staking her ground as the most anti-Trump lawmaker in Washington.

Her face has been plastered all over newspaper front pages and TV screens. While she has become the darling of the progressive left, Harris is now among the most loathsome figures for conservatives or anyone who supports President Trump’s agenda. There is now rampant speculation that she’s gearing up for a 2020 presidential run, even though for now she denies it.

But just exactly who is Kamala Harris?

For all the noise she’s making now in Washington, Harris, 52, actually has a relatively low profile in much of her own state. Her political rise has been groomed by the state’s Democratic machine, which is now akin to a monarchical procession in one-party rule California.

Born to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, Harris’ upbringing was that of a typical leftist. She was raised in Berkeley and grew up in academic circles of her mother after her parents’ divorce. She attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. and earned her law degree from Hastings in San Francisco, though she failed her bar exam on the first try.

Harris’ big break in her political career came after dating Willie Brown, a powerful former California Assembly speaker and mayor of San Francisco. She became the District Attorney of San Francisco before running and narrowly winning the race for state attorney general in 2010 in an election that was possibly tainted by voter fraud and wasn’t decided until nearly three weeks later.

The Plot Against Democracy
by Daniel Greenfield

[CanadaFreePress] Here’s the good news.

It’s 2017 and Republicans control the White House, the Senate, the House and more statewide offices than you can shake a big bundle of fake news papers at. And, potentially soon, a Supreme Court that takes its guidelines from the Constitution not Das Kapital and the National Social Justice Party.

Here’s the bad news, Republicans are still Republicans.

The media throws some chum in the water and sits back and watches the bloody fun as Republicans go after Republicans for the entertainment of their enemies. Scandals are manufactured and then strategically aimed to divide and conquer Republicans. But the real target is the conservative agenda.

Britain
Top two aides to British PM May quit
[Jpost] British Prime Minister Theresa May's top two aides quit on Saturday after her Conservative Party failed to win a majority in a national election.

Nick Timothy, May's co-chief of staff, said on the ConservativeHome website that he stepped down on Friday, while the BBC reported that Fiona Hill had also quit.

"The reason for the disappointing result was not the absence of support for Theresa May and the Conservatives but an unexpected surge in support for Labour," Timothy wrote.

"I take responsibility for my part in this election campaign, which was the oversight of our policy program. In particular, I regret the decision not to include in the manifesto a ceiling as well as a floor in our proposal to help meet the increasing cost of social care," he added.
Trying to outsocialist Labor is mug game.

More Men Named In College Sex Assault Cases Are Taking Their Accusers To Court
h/t Instapundit
[HotAir] In the past three years, male students accused of sexual misconduct have filed hundreds of lawsuits, charging that they were the victims of both false allegations and school procedures that failed to properly vet the claims.

And while there are no exact figures, in dozens of those cases male students also have sued the women who lodged the original allegations. One out-of-state attorney says he has filed more than 15 defamation complaints nationwide on behalf of male students against their accusers.
IMO, college "sexual misconduct" is part of feminazi war against males for white collar jobs

EasyJet plane diverts over ‘terrorist activity’ threat
[IsraelTimes] 151 passengers evacuated via emergency slides after crew alerted of ’suspicious conversion’ between 3 men on board.

A London-bound EasyJet flight was diverted to Cologne
...a lovely city in Germany. They invented perfume there...
Saturday evening due to a "suspicious conversation" heard on board, with passengers evacuated on emergency slides and three men nabbed
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
, German police said.

The pilot of the flight from the Slovenian capital Ljubljana decided to land after passengers told flight attendants "that several men were talking about terrorist activities," a police front man told AFP, without elaborating on the content of their discussion.

After the plane landed in a secure area of Cologne-Bonn airport at about 6:00 pm local time, federal police evacuated the 151 passengers down emergency slides. They isolated a backpack belonging to the three suspects, which was blown up by bomb squad officers.

The three men were handed over to police in Cologne, but no details were provided on the contents of their baggage or the reality of the terrorist threat.

German air traffic at the airport was interrupted between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm with 10 flights diverted and 20 departures delayed.

Germany remains on high alert following several jihadist terror attacks there and in other European countries. Authorities Friday evacuated Germany’s biggest rock festival, the three-day "Rock am Ring," over fears of a possible terrorist threat, which proved unfounded.

Can they determine what is in the backpack before it is blown up? Not exactly, of course, but at least the difference between wires and batteries vs. dirty underwear?

#2  Ask and ye shall receive, AlanC. ;-) Update from Deutsche Welle:

Three British citizens, whose conversations on board an Easyjet flight prompted an unscheduled landing in Cologne, were released on Sunday after being detained and questioned for hours by German authorities.

German authorities questioned the men and examined their cell phones but found no evidence to indicate that they were planning an attack, Cologne police said in a statement.

"At the moment Cologne police believe there was no actual threat," the statement read.

Earlier, police told DW that three British nationals were detained in connection to reports that they engaged in discussions about "terrorist activities." The men - aged 31, 38 and 48 - were returning from a business trip in Slovenia.

According to police, a female passenger on the Saturday flight overheard a conversation in which the men discussed "terrorist content and alerted crew members. Authorities said they could not verify the content of the conversation, but they said that one of the men was carrying a book that had the word "kill" and a picture of a sniper on it.

Police also destroyed a backpack using controlled explosives. The luggage reportedly belonged to the 48-year-old suspect and was destroyed after officials found suspicious cables inside. The cables turned out be various charging cords and adapters, authorities said.

People clearly now believe in the likelihood of terrorists attacking them. How that will impact the next round of elections remains to be seen.

Africa North
Libyan group says it has freed Gaddafi son Seif al-Islam
[IsraelTimes] Wanted by ICC for ‘crimes against humanity,’ former dictator’s emissary released by rebel militia under contested amnesty law.

An gang in Libya said on Facebook Saturday it had freed Seif al-Islam, the son of dead dictator Muammar Qadaffy
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland and was then murdered by his indignant subjects 42 years later...
who had been in their custody since November 2011.

The Abu Bakr al-Sadiq Brigade, a militia of former rebels that controls the town of Zintan in western Libya, said Seif al-Islam was freed Friday evening, "the 14th day of the month of Ramadan", under an amnesty law promulgated by the parliament based in the east of the country.

Libya has rival administrations, with the authorities in the east not recognizing the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) based in the capital Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
"We have decided to liberate Seif al-Islam Muammar Qadaffy. He is now free and has left the city of Zintan," the statement on Facebook said.

Zintan is controlled by gangs opposed to the GNA.

The son of the former dictator is the subject of an arrest warrant for crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the eight months of the uprising in 2011.

Libya’s authorities and the International Criminal Court (ICC) are in dispute over who has the right to judge him.
’Sword of Islam’

Seif al-Islam Qadaffy, 44, was sentenced to death in July 2015 by a court in Tripoli for his role in the murderous repression of the 2011 revolt.

His name means sword of Islam, and he is the second of Qadaffy’s eight children, the eldest son of his second wife Safiya.

The fluent English speaker often appeared in the West as the public face of his father’s regime.

He held no official post but had influence as a loyal emissary of the regime and architect of reform.

In July 2016, Seif al-Islam’s lawyers claimed that their client had been released under an amnesty issued by the unrecognized authorities in the east of the country.

But the GNA said the amnesty, enacted in April that year, cannot apply to persons accused of crimes against humanity.

In all, three of Qadaffy’s seven sons were killed during the revolution.

One son who survived, Saadi, is still on trial in Libya for his alleged involvement in the crackdown and killing of a former football coach.

The deposed dictator’s widow Safiya and three more of their children found refuge in Algeria in the wake of the revolution and then later in Oman.

But the shockwaves created by the ouster and grizzly killing of Muammar Qadaffy by rebels in his home town of Sirte continue to ripple across the troubled country.

Late last month, Tripoli was rocked by fierce festivities between forces loyal to the unity government and rival militias, with more than 50 members of the pro-GNA forces reported killed.

Relying on militia support and pitted against the rival administration in the east, the GNA has struggled to assert its authority.

Europe
Paris prosecutor: Internet radicalized Notre Dame attacker
[IsraelTimes] Algerian man who lunged at officers with a hammer ’for Syria’ had IS manual for ’lone wolves,’ jihadist propaganda at his home.

The hammer-wielding man who attacked coppers patrolling in front of Notre Dame Cathedral appears to have radicalized himself through the internet and was unknown to French police and intelligence services, the chief prosecutor in Gay Paree said Saturday.

Francois Molins said the 40-year-old Algerian doctoral student is being charged with attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise and crime of terrorist conspiracy.

One police officer was slightly injured in Tuesday’s attack.

The assailant -- crying out "This is for Syria!"-- was shot by police. He received hospital treatment for a shotgun injury to the torso.

Molins told a news conference Saturday that the man had the "profile of a neophyte" that counterterrorism services fear as much as holy warriors who are trained to carry out attacks.

"The terrorist threat today is shape-shifting. And this time we have been confronted by an internal threat ... individuals who want to carry out projects here when they have difficulties joining the war zones," Molins said.

Molins, who hasn’t identified the suspect by his full name, confirmed that he was an ex-journalist who was legally living in La Belle France as a student working on his doctoral thesis.
That would be Farid Ikken, the award-winning Algerian journalist who obtained Swedish citizenship by marrying a Swedish woman, then left her for a PhD program in Paris. He is also known as Massip Farid Ikken and Massip Farid.
Investigators who searched a student residence where he lived in the Gay Paree suburb of Cergy-Pontoise found a declaration of allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group he filmed on the morning of the attack. He presented himself as a "soldier of the caliphate," prosecutors said.

They have also found a laptop and four USB sticks that included Islamic holy warrior propaganda, photos and videos referring to attacks in London, Gay Paree, Brussels and at a church in the French region of Normandy, and images of the war in Syria.

He also had a "lone wolves’ manual" compiled by IS, the prosecutor said.

The man described himself as a Sunni Moslem who started a "quite radical" religious observance about 10 months ago, Molins said.

The suspect bought the hammer and two kitchen knives, which were found on him after the attack, in a supermarket on March 27.

Molins said his family and friends didn’t notice signs of radicalization. He described the man as socially and psychologically "isolated."

Investigators haven’t established the existence of any contact between the man and people living in Syria and Iraq.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iranian company finalizes $3b deal with Boeing for 30 jets
[IsraelTimes] Agreement between Aseman Airlines and US aerospace giant could be scuppered by Trump if he reimposes sanctions on Tehran.

The deal, announced in April, was signed at a ceremony in Tehran and the first 30 planes are due for delivery between 2022 and 2024.

The White House is in the midst of a 90-day review to decide if it will stick by the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers, in which Tehran agreed curb on its nuclear program in exchange for an easing of sanctions.

Washington must renew sanctions waivers every few months to keep the deal alive, and another set of renewals is due in the coming days.

Even if Trump sticks by the nuclear deal, the Boeing sale must be cleared by the US Office of Foreign Assets (OFAC).

He said Aseman would pay five percent of the contract in cash, with the remainder paid through a financing deal organised by Boeing.

Boeing, which is also building 80 planes for national carrier Iran Air, faces heavy criticism from US politicians who say Iranian airlines have been used to ship weapons and troops to Syria and other conflict zones.

The aerospace giant has therefore emphasized the employment potential of the deals, saying in April that the Aseman contract "creates or sustains approximately 18,000 jobs in the United States."

Iran has been desperate to renew its ageing fleet of planes, but was largely blocked from dealing with major aircraft manufacturers until the 2015 nuclear accord.

The US has maintained its own sanctions, which block almost all trade with Iran, but plane manufacturers were given a specific exemption under the nuclear deal.

OFAC approved the sale of the 80 Boeing as well as 100 Airbus planes to Iran Air. The first few Airbus jets have already arrived in Tehran.

Aseman currently has a fleet of 36 planes -- half of them the 105-seat Dutch Fokker 100s.

Its three Boeing 727-200s are almost as old as the Islamic revolution, having made their first flight in 1980.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
12 Staffers At Dem-Linked Group Charged With Voter Fraud
[DAILYCALLER] Local prosecutors in Marion County, Indiana, charged 12 employees of a Democratic-linked voter recruitment organization of submitting fraudulent voter registration applications prior to the 2016 election.

According to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named, prosecutors say that 11 temporary canvassers working for the Indiana Voter Registration Project made and sent in an unknown number of fake voter applications. The canvassers’ supervisor, Holiday Burke, was charged as well.

The organization, the AP reported, is managed by Patriot Majority USA a group with strong ties to Democratic Party, including former President Bill Clinton
...former Democratic president of the U.S. Bill was the second U.S. president to be impeached, the first to deny that oral sex was sex, the first to have difficulty with the definition of is...
and former Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid
... the charismatic senator-for-life from Nevada, currently majority leader ...
, as well as labor unions.

The investigation by state authorities began last August when a clerk in Hendricks County marked around a dozen voter forms with suspicious information. The probe went into 56 counties where the organization collected 45,000 applications. Patriot Majority rejected the notion the group engaged in any illegal activity.

"We looked onto the Statewide Voter Registration System and noticed that there had been an unusually high number of date of birth and first name changes," the secretary of state’s office told CNN last October.

If the 12 defendants are found guilty on all charges that include acquiring or sending in voter registration applications known to be false as well as counterfeiting, each could face up to 2 ½ years in prison.

Public Integrity noted in 2013 of Patriot Majority, "Although it describes itself as a grassroots group, a single $6 million donation from an unnamed source made up one-fourth of Patriot Majority USA’s $23 million in 2012 revenue. More than half of its haul, $12 million, came from anonymous donors that gave more than $1 million each, its tax return indicates."

Dutch police on car incident: no indication of attack
[CHRON] A car struck pedestrians around Amsterdam's main train station on Saturday, injuring eight people. There was "no indication whatsoever" it was an myrmidon attack, police said.

Six of the injured were hospitalized, with two of them at death's door, police spokeswoman Marjolein Koek said.

"There is no indication whatsoever that this is a terrorist attack," Koek added.

Amsterdam police later tweeted that apparently the driver had been unwell. "Talked to the suspect. Doesn't appear to be intentional, rather getting sick. Obviously we continue the investigation to exclude other options."

Police said that the driver was parked in a place where he wasn't allowed to stop and drove off when approached by police and ran into a wall.

The incident received immediate widespread attention after several myrmidon attacks in Europe over the past year involving vehicles, including one in London last week.

Mastermind behind Tehran twin attacks killed
[Iran Press TV] The Iranian Intelligence Ministry has announced that the criminal mastermind behind the Tehran terrorist attacks has been killed.

During a televised interview on Saturday, Iranian Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said that the terrorist commander was killed earlier in the day by intelligence forces.

He noted that the terrorist had fled the country following the ensuing security operations after the attack, but was killed with the cooperation of friendly foreign intelligence services.

At least 17 people were killed and 52 others injured in Tehran on Wednesday when gunnies mounted almost simultaneous assaults on Iran’s Parliament and the Mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Theocratic Republic, Imam Khomeini. The ISIS terrorist group grabbed credit for the attacks.

After offering condolences to the families of the attacks victims, Alavi stressed that over the past few months the country’s intelligence forces had neutralized over 25 terrorist cells.

He added that the large number of terrorist operations thwarted by Iran had pushed the murderous Moslems into engaging in the Wednesday attacks.

First death sentence handed to man for blasphemy on social media

the accused, who belongs to the Shia community, last year in Bahawalpur.

The accused, who hails from Okara, had allegedly posted derogatory content about prominent Sunni religious figures and the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PTUI!) and his wives on Facebook.

Paperwork was started but nothing else was done against him on behalf of the State at CTD Multan cop shoppe under Section 295-C (use of derogatory remarks, etc., in respect of the Holy Prophet) and Sections 9 and 11w of the Anti-Terrorism Act (which deal with whipping up sectarian hatred) .

The sentence is the harshest among cyber-crime related sentences handed down so far in the country. Pakistain has never executed anyone convicted of blasphemy.

Rangers personnel stopped a 'suspicious-looking car' during snap-checking near Safoora Chowrangi. The car was bearing a fake Pakistain Army number plate, the statement said.

The suspects' vehicle was being escorted by two guards of a private security company who were riding a cycle of violence.

During initial investigation, two men travelling in the car -- identified as Rehan Ali and Syed Rizwan Ali -- confessed to using their influence on the basis of fake connections with army officers and a counterfeit number plate, the blurb said.

It emerged that the two men riding the cycle of violence, Mohammad Zahid and Ghaffar, had obtained uniforms on rent from a private security company for this purpose.

Rangers personnel recovered a 12-bore gun and a 9mm pistol from the suspects, who have been handed over to police for legal action.

IHC charges former judge, wife with six offences in Tayyaba torture case
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday issued a charge sheet to Raja Khuram Ali Khan and his spouse, Maheen Zafar, the main accused in the Taiba torture case.

The police had earlier started the paperwork but haven't done much else against former Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Raja Khurram Ali Khan and his wife for keeping the minor in illegal confinement, burning her hand, beating her with a ladle, detaining her in a storeroom and threatening her of dire consequences.

In its charge sheet, the IHC details that it will try the accused for having committed six offences.

It details that the accused persons wrongfully confined the minor, Tayabba, in their house; that Maheen Zafar caused injuries -- multiple small wounds on cheek, burn wounds on arms, fingers and thighs -- to minor Taiba.

The charge sheet also states that Maheen Zafar "extended threats of dire consequences to minor Taiba to not disclose her maltreatment to anyone".

Another offense was that Maheen Zafar and ADSJ Raja both "willfully assaulted, ill-treated, neglected, harmed and abandoned and injured minor Taiba, who was under their care".

The last offence involves Raja for "causing disappearance of minor Taiba in order to screen his co-accused Maheen Zafar from the legal consequences".

Signed off by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani
... four star general, current Chief of Army Staff of the Mighty Pak Army. Kayani is the former Director General of ISI...
, the charge sheet states in clear words that the accused, who have pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
to the charges, will be tried at the IHC.

The accused's counsel had earlier tried to scale the trial down to district court level, a proposition that was swiftly rejected by the IHC.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian rebel continue advance into Raqqa
(Reuters) U.S.-backed Syrian forces have advanced into opposite sides of Islamic State’s so-called Syrian capital of Raqqa, the forces and a war monitor said on Saturday.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a group of Kurdish and Arab militias supported by a U.S.-led coalition, began to attack Raqqa on Tuesday after a months-long campaign to cut it off.

The U.S.-led coalition estimates that Raqqa, which Islamic State seized from Syrian rebels in 2014 during their lightning advance in Syria and Iraq, is defended by 3,000-4,000 jihadists.

It has been a hub both for Islamic State’s military leaders and its bureaucrats, and has been used to plot attacks in countries around the world.

The SDF said it had seized al-Mishlab district in the far east of Raqqa on Friday and al-Sabahia district in the west. The war monitor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the SDF had taken Mishlab and more than half of Sabahia.

The forces are now advancing into al-Romania district in northwest Raqqa, the SDF and the Observatory said. Islamic State had turned back an earlier SDF assault on a military base on the north side, the Observatory said.

Islamic State still has a long sweep of territory along Syria’s Euphrates valley and wide stretches of desert, despite recent losses to the SDF, the Syrian army and rebel groups.

To the west of Raqqa, the Syrian army and its allies have advanced into Islamic State territory and on Friday reached SDF lines near the town of Tabqa, 40km (25 miles) from the city.

The Syrian government has described the SDF’s war against Islamic State as “legitimate” and said its military priorities are further east, suggesting it does not plan to confront the group now.

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court (PHC) to transfer Mashal’s murder case from Mardan, citing possible threats from opponents.

In April, a vigilante mob, incited by rumours, had attacked Mashal, accusing him of "publishing blasphemous content online". The mass communication student was first beaten, then shot by the mob. He succumbed to the injuries he received.

Abdul Lateef Afridi, the lawyer for Iqbal Khan, filed the application in PHC Saturday. Iqbal Khan requested the transfer of the case to the Anti-Terrorism Court, Haripur or any other safe place, saying his adversaries might create a law and order situation.

Iqbal had made the same demands in a presser earlier this week, where he also requested the PHC to pay his legal fee and the Supreme Court to provide protection to his daughters, who haven’t been to school since Mashal’s murder.

"Almost 57 accused have been jugged

and others are hiding. The trial of such a big number of accused with witnesses and supporters of both sides can result in confrontation between the parties and thus a serious law and order situation can be created," his application said, adding that a large number of friends and some religious parties had took to roads demanding the release of the arrested students and others involved.

Marches Against ‘Sharia Law’ Nationwide
[NBCNEWS] Demonstrations against Islamic law led to arrests, tense confrontations and physical fights in some U.S. cities Saturday amid several rallies sponsored by ACT for America, which the Southern Poverty Law Center designates as an anti-Moslem hate group.

The "March Against Sharia" was scheduled to take place in more than 20 cities, including New York, Dallas and Atlanta, and was projected to be ACT for America's largest protest against Islam.

In some cities, the rallies were met by counter-demonstrators. Seven people were tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
during demonstrations at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul, but no injuries were reported, state police said.

In Seattle, police said officers deployed pepper spray to "break up a large fight" and arrested three near Occidental Park following the protests downtown.

At the end of the rally, a group returned to the park where the melee erupted, according to a police statement. Officers used pepper spray to disperse the crowd and arrested one woman and two men for obstruction, it added.

NBC affiliate KING 5 reported that hundreds of demonstrators had marched in downtown to support Moslems and confront a few dozen people who took part in the ACT for America demonstration at City Hall.

"We are not anti-Moslem. We are anti-radical Islam," said a March Against Sharia speaker outside City Hall, according to the station.

13 Philippine marines killed in battle to free city of militants
[DAWN] Thirteen Philippine marines were killed in fierce fighting with Lions of Islam who have laid siege to a southern city for nearly a month in the biggest single-day loss for government forces, the military said Saturday.

A US Navy aircraft provided surveillance for the local troops as the battle raged in Marawi on Friday, confirming the involvement of the US military in helping quell the urban insurrection at the request of the Philippine government, Philippine military officials said.

An News Agency that Dare Not be Named journalist and photographer saw a US Navy P3 Orion plane hovering in cloudy skies above Marawi on Friday. The aircraft flew above rocket-firing Philippine helicopters that struck Lion of Islam positions, causing plumes of smoke to billow skyward.

"We don't have adequate surveillance equipment, so we asked the US military for assistance. It's noncombat assistance," military front man Brig Gen Restituto Padilla said by phone, citing a Philippine government policy that bars foreign troops from local combat.

The US Embassy in Manila said without elaborating that US special operations forces were providing help to Filipino troops battling the Maute and Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...

Iran opposes ‘unilateral’ Kurdish independence plan in Iraq
[Iran Press TV] The Iranian Foreign Ministry has expressed Tehran’s opposition to a "unilateral" plan by Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region to hold an independence referendum, stressing the importance of maintaining integrity and stability in the Arab country.

"The principal and clear position of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran is to support Iraq’s territorial integrity and solidarity," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Saturday.

"The Kurdistan region is part of the Republic of Iraq," he added.

The Iranian spokesperson emphasized that "unilateral" decisions outside the national and legal framework and principles, particularly the Iraqi Constitution, would "only create new problems."

This is particularly important at a time when Iraq and the Middle East region are faced with "complicated conditions" and ill-wishers are hatching plots to prolong instability in the country, Qassemi added.

The president of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government, Masoud Barzani, announced on Twitter on Wednesday that the northern territory would hold an independence referendum on September 25 not only in the three provinces that make up the Kurdish region but in the areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and the central Iraqi governments. However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
the Iraqi government said in a statement on Friday that it would reject any unilateral move by Kurdish regional authorities to press for independence.

Gay Black Muslim argues for taxpayer-funded Muslim-only safe spaces, identifies as black before American
[ConservativeFiringLine] On Friday, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson interviewed Blair Imani, executive director of "Equality for HER," a group she founded in 2014 while attending college, about the idea of taxpayer-funded Muslim-only safe spaces similar to those sought by Muslims in Australia.

According to Fox News Insider:

An Australian Islamic group has proposed the creation of taxpayer-funded "safe spaces" for young Muslims.

The Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV), which says it represents 200,000 Muslims, claims the community is suffering mental health issues and other problems because of the widespread suspicion it faces over fears of radical Islamic terror.

The ICV said such forums would enable young people to safely express "inflammatory views that would cause trouble if voiced publicly."

On "Tucker Carlson Tonight," American Muslim Blair Imani, executive director of Equality for HER, explained why she thinks such safe spaces are a good idea.
Vid of interview at link. Bonus: Tucker pulls the "flush handle". It would be interesting to see how long a female, gay black muslim would last, say, in Helmand.

Eight refugees drown as boat sinks off Libya's coast
[Iran Press TV] At least eight refugees have drowned when their Europe-bound boat sank off Libya's coast, a coastguard official says.

The eight bodies were on an inflatable craft that can carry up to 120 passengers, said Colonel Fathi al-Rayani, head of the coastguard in Garabulli, 60 kilometers east of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
He estimated that "at least 100" refugees were missing.

The boat was spotted deflated off Garabulli, and the coastguard found the bodies inside, AFP reported.

Conflict-ravaged Libya has long been a stepping stone for refugees seeking a better life in Europe.

The UN says around 61,250 refugees have reached Italia since the start of the year after crossing the Mediterranean, while 1,778 more are dead or missing.

The Italian coastguard has said that more than 900 refugees were rescued off Libya on Thursday and Friday.

Iraq
Iranian militia capture ISIS positions along Syrian border
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi pro-government paramilitary forces said they totally cleared areas west of Mosul and along the borders with Syria from Islamic State militants except Tal Afar.

Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, deputy chief of the Al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units), said in a press statement on Saturday that the force imposed full control over areas west of Mosul, crowning operations that launched in September with retaking 14.000 kilometers of territories and liberating 360 villages.

He said the victory puts IS fighters in Mosul in complete isolation.

“Our forces are awaiting directives from Prime Minister and Supreme Armed Forces Commander, Haider al-Abadi, to invade Tal afar,” Mohandes said, referring to the major IS bastion west of Mosul.

Last week, PMUs announced the total recapture of Baaj region near the borders with Syria, later announcing the retaking of several villages surrounding it. They took over neighboring Qairawan in May.

So far, Mohandes assured, PMUs have not entered Syrian territories, but reached a village two kilometers away from Syria two days earlier and hit some targets with artillery.

Operations by the Popular Mobilization Units have recently managed to impose control over villages along the borderline with Syria. Meanwhile, government troops have become closer to retaking Mosul, Islamic State’s previously-proclaimed capital, where a campaign has been running since October 2016 and recently cornered a few hundreds of militants in the western side of the city.

Islamic State militants have been holding the Tal Afar town since 2014. PMUs have been recapturing areas around the enclave, and isolated it from Mosul and Syria preparing for an invasion which the JOC has not yet decided whether it would assign to paramilitary or government troops.

Iraqi forces capture district in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government forces recaptured on Saturday Zanjili district in western Mosul, leaving only one district in Islamic State’ grip before reaching its strategic stronghold in the Old City neighborhood.

Federal Police chief Shaker Jawdat said in a statement that his forces went on clearing booby-traps from the district, adding they ran into a huge reservoir of projectiles and rocket launchers belonging to the group. Troops also continue to evacuate civilians escaping from al-Shifa neighborhood, the last remaining area near the Old City.

Iraqi government troops regained control over eastern Mosul in January after three months of fighting. Operations for the western side of the city launched in mid February, and Iraqi generals say a few hundreds of IS fighters remain in the Old City as a last refuge.

In an apparent attempt to hinder the troops’ advances, Islamic State militants on Saturday surprisingly attacked a supply route between Baghdad and Mosul which passes via the city of Shriqat, Salahuddin. The attack left civilian casualties.

A military source was quoted saying in a press statement that the “massive” attack targeted Shirqat, Makhoul region and desert areas to the southwest of Mosul. He said Iraqi warplanes and large ground reinforcements helped fight the militants off.

Shirqat mayor, Ali al-Dawdah, said a curfew was imposed in the city, but said troops, backed by Popular Mobilization Forces, managed to repel the attack and killed 16 militants.

DPA quoted an Iraqi security source saying 14 civilians, including three women and a little girl, were killed in the attack which reached a village on the outskirts of Shirqat. He added that intense fighting continued in the area.

Iraqi forces press attacks in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi government forces invaded on Saturday the last neighborhood held by the Islamic State near western Mosul’s Old City, the group’s last entrenchment in the city.

An official military source told Shafaaq News website that arm forces made incursions along 50 meters into al-Shifa neighborhood, entering from nearby Zanjili which government troops took over earlier on the same day.

Federal Police chief Shaker Jawdat said in a statement hours earlier that his forces went on clearing booby-traps from Zanjili district after taking entire control. He said hundreds of militants were killed there, including 49 snipers and 22 suicide bombers.

Iraqi forces drive back ISIS attack in Mosul

[AlManar] Iraqi forces repelled an offensive launched in the early hours of Saturday by ISIL on the town of Shirqat, south of Mosul, during which more than 30 military and civilians were killed and 40 more wounded, security sources said.

About a dozen ISIL terrorists were also killed in the fighting, which ended around midday, the sources said.

About half the dead in the city were civilians and the rest members of the Iraqi armed forces and tribal fighters. A curfew was still in place in the early evening.

I'm still waiting on proof myself, but I'm actually inclined to believe it. The old Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) was remarkably good at finding people with language skills, whether they knew they had them or not. Some of the folks I sent for the DLAB had real problems speaking English, but they blew the doors off the DLAB and went on to the school (used to be in CA, not sure where it's at now.).

Ann Taylor, Dress Barn, Loft, Lane Bryant: Store closures on the way
[MONEY.CNN] Ascena Retail Group (ASNA) -- which owns the Ann Taylor, Dress Barn, Loft, Lane Bryant, Justice, Maurices and Catherines stores -- plans to shutter between 250 and 650 locations over the next two years.

Chief executive David Jaffe made the announcement during a conference call with investors Thursday, and he didn't specify how many store closures will affect each brand. Ascena could not be immediately reached for comment.

Jaffe said 250 locations will definitely close down, and another 400 will close their doors unless the company can negotiate lower rents at those locations.

He said that the move is necessary to help the company traverse the deeply troubled
...meaning it might require more than two 'tuts'. If the other side responds at all it's known as a 'tut for tat' and it's worth 20 diplomatic points..
brick-and-mortar retail market. Jaffe said Ascena is facing a "persistent traffic decline" and expects that to remain a "major headwind" for the company.

Ascena is far from the only company feeling the pressure. Stores that were once staples of American malls are failing rapidly, largely because of increasing competition from digital retailers like Amazon (AMZN, Tech30).

Earlier this week, Hudson's Bay (HBAYF) -- owner of Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor -- said it is cutting its workforce by 2,000 jobs.

Macy's (M) said earlier this year that it will close 68 stores and cut 10,000 jobs.

JCPenney (JCP) is shutting down 138 stores by August. Bebe said it planned to shut down all of its stores by the end of May.

GameStop (GME) said in March it will close more than 100 retail locations.

The parent company of Kmart and Sears (SHLD) said in January it will shutter 150 stores.

And without their thriving tenants, malls have been hit hard by the retail woes. A June 2 report from Credit Suisse estimates 20% to 25% of American malls will close within the next five years.

Didn't get a hint from the fall of General Motors making basically the same cars under different names? You can only push your product so far, and having redundant management and dealerships/store fronts only compounds the cost of overhead to the entire process. Unlike government, allowing the 'suits' to build little empires eventually starts to hammer the bottom line.

#1  As I commented yesterday, James Comey's testimony at this point is essentially publicly documented evidence in the overall Russian interference and Trump collusion investigation.

Because of the legally questionable actions and motives of James Comey, it becomes hard to fathom how special counsel Robert Mueller could refuse to investigate James Comey without losing all credibility himself.

Because of their closely interwoven working relationship at both the DOJ and other state and federal judicial positions (not to mention their close personal relationship), it is hard to justify Robert Mueller's position as special counsel going forward at this point.

This brings into bright highlight the intense confrontation between Calif. Senator Kamala Harris and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein during Wednesday's Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Hearing.

Senator Haris was demanding that Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein sign a letter giving special counsel Mueller full independence from the DOJ. This would give special counsel Mueller full independence from Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein's ability, statutorily and legally, to fire him.

Rosenstein refused.

Rosenstein appointed Mueller as Special Counsel on May 17th and retains the authority to override Mueller’s decisions and to order his dismissal. In the hearing, Rosenstein refused to commit in writing to grant Mueller full independence from any officer at the Department of Justice (for now).

8 die in ISIS mortar attack in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Eight civilians were killed, while five others were wounded as five mortar missiles were shot by Islamic State against western Mosul regions, source from Federal Police said on Saturday.

“Eight civilians were killed, while five others were wounded as IS militants fired mortar missiles against al-Zanjili district,” Cap. Adel Haidar told BasNews.

The militants, according to Haidar, “began targeting Zanjili after being kicked out from al-Shifa district as well as the Grand Nuri al-Kabeer mosque,” he added.

Meanwhile, Col. Khaled al-Jawari, from the Joint Operations Command, said a weapon stash was found, while civilians held by the fighters were liberated in al-Shifa district in western Mosul.

“The Rapid Response troops, which accompany Federal Police forces on al-Shifa district where confrontations are taking place, seized a huge weapon stash with dozens of mortar missiles as well as locally-manufactured rockets and other explosives,” he added.

“Ten civilians kidnapped by the militants from Zanjili were freed,” he told BasNews.

“Troops are slowly advancing toward al-Shifa to protect lives of citizens in the region,” he said.

Earlier on Saturday, the Iraqi government forces recaptured Zanjili district in western Mosul, leaving only one district in Islamic State’ grip before reaching its strategic stronghold in the Old City neighborhood.

2 Kidz die in ISIS landmine attack

[ARA News] At least two children were killed and three other civilians were injured on Saturday after a landmine planted by ISIS extremists exploded in the Kurdish city of Kobane, in northern Syria.

“A landmine, that had been planted by ISIS terrorists in Kobane, exploded on Saturday, causing the death two children, beside injuring three other civilians,” eyewitnesses told ARA News.

The Kurdish Asayish security forces in Kobane identified the victims as Nada Mustafa, 4, and Hamoud al-Barho, 13.

“The wounded were transferred that the Kobani Hospital for treatment,” the Asayish said in a statement.

Unexploded devices pose a daily threat to civilians in the cities and towns liberated for ISIS.

Similar cases were reported in Hasakah and Manbij, where dozens of civilians died in explosion of landmines planted by ISIS extremists before losing those areas to the Kurdish YPG forces and allied SDF troops.

Speaking to ARA News, Abdulrahman Hemo, head of the reconstruction board of Kobane, said that the explosives continue to threaten civilian lives. “Until now, 50 per cent of the civilian death toll in Kobane was caused by explosives in the ground,” he said.

“This explosive pollution will make it impossible for people to reconstruct their lives, and blocks access to several areas. It also prevents humanitarian organizations from operating safely and providing the necessary support to this vulnerable population,” said Frédéric Maio, Handicap International’s Mine Action Program Development Manager in a public statement.

“ISIS militants are experts in the use of mines,” German fighter of YPG Heval Cihan told ARA News, suggesting that ISIS is using traps and decoys, which had killed one of the YPG’s mine experts in Ayn al-Issa town.

“After the liberation of Kobane, most martyrs were not killed by attacks, but by mines,” he said.

Afghanistan
Afghan soldier kills 2 US troops, injures 2 others in Nangarhar
[Iran Press TV] An Afghan army soldier has opened fire on US troops stationed in the east of the country, killing two and injuring two others from the American military personnel.

A front man for the provincial governor in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
province said on Saturday that the Afghan soldier was killed after the attack, which was carried out in Achin district.

Attahullah Khogyani would not elaborate on further details about the insider attack and what could have caused the incident. He said the Afghan commando was killed in the return fire and the incident came during a joint operation against potential attacks by ISIS, a Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
terrorist group based in Iraq and Syria that has gained a foothold in Nangarhar.

Afghanistan has seen attacks by military personnel on foreign forces some 15 years after the United States led a Western military campaign to oust the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
from power. In March, three US soldiers were killed in one such attack in Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, the volatile province where the Taliban still holds a grip.

The attack in Nangarhar comes as anti-US sentiments still run deep among Afghan police and military forces as many blame Washington for the continued bloodshed in the country. They say the US presence in Afghanistan continues to claim lives from civilians and security forces while attacks by the Taliban and other murderous Moslem groups, such as ISIS, are also on the rise.

At least three Afghan coppers were killed on Saturday, when US warplanes opened fire on their gathering during an operation in Helmand. The US military command said in a statement that the Afghan coppers were killed in a so-called friendly fire. Both Afghan and US officials said they had launched investigations into the incident, which happened during a joint operation, this time against the Taliban.

Very strongly yes, Frank G. As has been pointed out, Afghan soldiers attack each other considerably more often than they attack the Americans in their midst, even given that some of them are secretly the enemy acting with malice aforethought. The culture is stupidly violent and impulsive. That the killer died immediately is small comfort.

Land dispute in Tunisian lands 78 in hospital
TUNIS: Tribal clashes on Saturday in southern Tunisia over a land dispute injured 78 people, including one seriously, a regional governor said.

“The two tribes used hunting rifles, stones and blunt objects, requiring police to intervene and use tear gas to disperse them and end the violence,” Sami El Ghabi told AFP.

He said 78 people were hospitalized in Kebili and another in a serious condition was transferred to a facility in Sfax city.

Regional health chief Hedi Ben Slimane told private radio station Mosaique FM that 10 people had suffered buckshot wounds.

Differences over land between the two tribes, dating back all the way back to independence from France in 1956, degenerated into violence on Thursday, El Ghabi said.

'This is war': Florida sheriff urges citizens to arm themselves in case of attack
[FOXNEWS] A Florida sheriff’s office posted a controversial message on social media, urging citizens to arm themselves in self-defense.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey posted the video on Facebook Wednesday, two days after a deadly workplace shooting in nearby Orlando claimed the lives of five people.

"Folks, now more than ever is the time for our citizens to be prepared to serve as the first line of defense, not only for them, but for their families," Sheriff Ivey said.

As images of the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting and Pulse nightclub massacre flashed on-screen, Ivey warned residents that attacks have happened locally as well as abroad.

"What’s next is to fully understand that this is war, and you better be prepared to wage war to protect you, your family, and those around you if attacked," he said.

Ivey stressed that attackers rely on people running, hiding, and waiting for help, rather than fighting back.

"What they don’t count on is being attacked themselves, having to become defensive to save their own lives," Ivey argued.

The sheriff said that calling 911 means officers are on their way, but said, "Until they arrive, it’s up to you and those with you to neutralize or eliminate the threat."

Ivey encouraged people to take self-defense classes, and urged those with concealed weapons permits to carry their guns with them at all times.

"No matter who you are or what your position is on guns, there’s no denying the fact that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun or a knife is an armed and well-prepared citizen or law enforcement officer," Ivey said.

The sheriff’s message received a mixed response. Some residents applauded his stance while others criticized it, calling it "fear-mongering" and encouraging vigilantes.

This Week in Books, June 11, 2017
Mohammed and Charlemagne
Henri Pirenne
Dover Publications, 2001
Republication (unabridged) George Allen and Unwin, 1954

Before anyone gets super excited about the title, this book is an anthropological study about the effects of two major ethos coming into contact in the post-Roman Mediterranean culture. It is not about timely maneuvers outside of Tours, though the effects of conflict are noted.

And Mr. Pirenne did not pen this book. He died before he was able to put his notes into publication form. A former associate of Mr. Pirenne and his son, Jacques Pirenne compiled his notes and did their best to write the book as they thought Mr. Pirenne would have written it.

Preface, by Jacques Pirenne, Page 9:

This was the crowning achievement of his last years of work. The problem of the end of Antiquity and the beginning of the Middle Ages had always preoccupied him. Before the War, in his lectures on the History of the Middle Ages, he drew attention to the profound traces which the institutions of the late Roman Empire had left upon those of the Frankish epoch. But is was during his captivity in Germany, when, as a prisoner in the camp of Holzminden, he organized, for the many Russian students who shared his fate, a course of lectures on the economic history of Europe, that the solution of this capital problem seems to have dawned upon him. And during his exile in the village of Kreuzburg, in Thuringia, while he was writing his History of Europe, he emphasized, for the first time, the close relation that existed between the conquests of Islam and the formation of the mediaeval Occident.

I wish I had read this book long ago as it fills in a gap in history little addressed, and does so using empirical methods such as the change in cost of paper, oil, and other day to day items. Mr. Pirenne does get into the cultural differences between post Roman territories, Germanic traditions, and the introduction of Islam to the Mediterranean world.

And he does so in an interesting and fluid way, a testament to the compilers, writers, and editors. The information is very engaging, and well proofed in the footnotes. Mr. Pirenne's topics cover such data systems as commerce and trade, culture and traditions, government and bureaucracy, and covers these topics pre and post major events, and does so with no this group is good, bad, or ugly.

Chapter 11: The Economic and Social Situation After the Invasions and the Mediterranean Navigation - Conditions After the Invasions - Navigation, page 92-94

The fragility of papyrus in the northern climate explains why so little is left; but we must be under no illusion as to the quantity which was formerly employed. And the wealth of information which we possess concerning Gaul, thanks to Gregory of Tours, should not make us forget the fact that still more papyrus must have been used in Italy and Spain, and that this must have necessitated an exceptionally active import trade.

Another article of consumption figured very largely in the commerce of the period. This was oil. There was a demand for it everywhere; in the first place for alimentary purposes, for it seems that in Southern Gaul nearly everything was cooked in oil, as in Spain and Italy. The native olive trees did not suffice to meet the demand. It was necessary to import oil from abroad; all the more necessary inasmuch as the lighting of the churches at this period - doubtless because oil was so abundant - was not by means of wax candles, as it was at a later date, but by means of oil-fed lamps. Now Africa was the greatest oil-producing country in the Empire, and was to remain so until the Musulman conquest. It was exported from Africa in orcae. Theodoric, between 509 and 511, wrote to the Bishop of Salona on behalf of the merchant Johannes, who had furnished this bishop with sexaginta orcas olei ad implenda luminaria, and who wanted to be paid. The rest of the letter shows this was merely a parvitas, that is to say, a bagatelle. Gregory of Tours tells us something about the oil trade at Marseilles; he speaks of a merchant who had seventy orcae of oil stolen on the quay. A diploma grant by Clovis III, in 692, and renewed in 716, but which really dated back to Dagobert I (d. 639) granted the monastery of Saint-Denis an annual subsidy of a hundred solidi, with which the actors regii were to buy oil from the cellarium fisci, in accordance with the ordo cataboli. A formula of Marculf's mentions Marseilles as the port where the oil for the luminaria was generally purchased.

This oil therefore found its way even into the North. The Corbie Diploma of 716, which mentions 10,000 pounds of oil, is further proof of this. It must not be supposed that this was oil from Provence, for it was deposited in the cellarium fisci. A tax which refers to the exportation of oil from Bordeaux gives us reason to believe that this oil was forwarded from Marseilles.

There are other data points noted, such as prices for commodities and trade items in spices and camels, which suggests heavy trade and prosperity along the Mediterranean. Also interesting to me was the evolution of post-Roman Italy, and Mr. Pirenne does well explaining that process.

The Carolingian Coup D'Etat and the Volte-Face of the Papacy, Page 224

The year 751 saw the alliance of the Carolingians with the Papacy. It was planned under Zacharias and completed under Stephen II. Before the situation could be completely reversed the last thread that connected the Pope with the Empire had to be broken, for so long as it existed the Papacy was force to remain, in defiance of its nature a Mediterranean power. It doubtless would have remained a Mediterranean power if Islam had not robbed it of Africa and Spain. But Germany, in the North, was now of greater significance.

Still, tradition was so powerful that if by some impossibility the Emperor could have driven out the Lombards, the Pope would have remained faithful to him. But in 749, with the appearance of Aistulf, the Lombards resumed their policy of conquest.

In 751 they seized Ravenna, and this time they remained permanently in possession of the city. Rome could no longer evade her fate. In 752 Aistulf's army was before the walls. Only immediate assistance could save the city. Stephen began by imploring help of the Iconoclast. He begged him to come with an army and save the city of Rome. But Constantine V contented himself with sending an embassy to the Lombards. Aistulf received it, but refused to make any concession. Pope Stephen II then appealed to Pippin for assistance, but before taking this decisive step he himself went to Pavia, where he besought Aistulf to renounce his conquests. Having suffered a rebuff, he left for the court of Pippin, where he arrived in January 754.

The inevitable had come to pass at last. The tradition which Pippin had broken in 751 was abandoned three years later by the Pope himself.

All said, this is not a beginners book. Readers are expected to have a working knowledge of regional cultures, trade centers and routes, language skills, and major players. In fact, a couple of maps would have gone a long way to making this transcript a bit more accessible. With the greatest library ever created accessible by phone or computer, the education requirements are not a make-or-break problem for the reader, and the research to figure what is meant by orcae or where the Suevi are located is educational in and of itself.

Link is to Amazon.
I have run out of sand to discuss emergency bags this time; and I would like to mention that a consistent weekly post is impossible for me at the moment, as I will for sure miss next week's post on account of a celebration (for a change). I may also branch out to other aspects of the Humanities from time to time, as well as cooking.

#1  Trade was critical for transitioning from the Dark Ages on, and the Hanseatic League, for example, was but one confederation formed for the purpose of trade and protecting trade.
Posted by: badanov || 06/11/2017 12:14 Comments || Top||

#2  I was a bit surprised by how well off post-Roman Europe was; especially Spain. Carthage was a major trade hub. The trade routes and practices excelled until Europe started losing access to Africa, especially Egypt with the wheat, oil, wine, paper. When trade within the Sardinic & Tyrrhenian Seas becomes dicey to non-muslims Gaul begins a great decline (Spain already captured at this point) and everyone starts looking north for resources.

Looking at that, then looking into the future where demand would be even greater, it is easy to see how Venice with its exclusive trade rights in Africa became so wealthy so quickly.

And look at orcae, which I take for plural orca, Latin for whale, which I take as a class of ship, such as clipper or cutter, sloop, etc. which would indicate a standardized ship construction, like saying I would like seven truck trailers of olive oil. There may be small volume differences among trailers, but I would have a good estimate of the volume.

Great book - filled gaps and raised questions at the same time.

Adam West dies at 88
Adam West, the ardent actor who managed to keep his tongue in cheek while wearing the iconic cowl of the Caped Crusader on the classic 1960s series Batman, has died. He was 88.

West, who was at the pinnacle of pop culture after Batman debuted in January 1966, only to see his career fall victim to typecasting after the ABC show flamed out, died Friday night in Los Angeles after a short battle with leukemia, a family spokesperson said.

West died peacefully surrounded by his family and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Liberals Would Rather See Us Dead than Admit They're Wrong about Islam
[EagleRising] Islam is not, repeat is NOT, a religion of peace. It is a religion designed for conquest and it demands submission of all non-Muslims. This should be obvious given its history, yet the truth is vehemently denied by progressives here and in Western Europe. We had an administration that tried to convince us that the Fort Hood massacre was ’work place violence’ and that the war on terror was really just an ’overseas contingency operation.’ That was lunacy. It is also insanity to ignore the real threat the religion of Islam poses to American and Western values.

It would be nice if all of our elected leaders had a working knowledge of history and viewed current events rationally. Sadly progressive leaders here and in Western Europe maintain their delusional world view in spite of all evidence to the contrary. Even most non-progressive leaders refuse to face the reality about Islam. Islam is the antithesis of our values and inimical to our way of life, because Islam is not a tolerant religion. Fundamental Muslims follow the teachings of the Quran and expect everyone else to do so as well. Historically those conquered by Muslims had two choices, you could convert or die, unless you were a Christian or a Jew. Christians and Jews are allowed to live as second class citizens provided they paid a penalty. In ISIS controlled territory today, the penalty is so high and the restrictions so onerous that conversion or death is the reality.

We have only to look at Western Europe to validate this reality. Muslims in those countries have not assimilated and the havoc they are causing in those societies will only grow as their population increases. Their goal is that not just Muslims, but everyone else lives according to the Islamic law. Our progressive leaders and the mainstream media assure us that that won’t happen here. Really?

22 die as Iranian tribes in fight it out in Khuzestan
JEDDAH/LONDON: Fighting between rival tribesmen in southern Iran left 22 people dead Friday night, an Iranian lawmaker was quoted by the ILNA news agency as saying Saturday.

“The incident… in Ramhormoz county (in Khuzestan province) is rooted in an old tribal conflict,” lawmaker Hedayatollah Khademi said. “Unfortunately… advanced military weapons were used and 22 people were killed.”

But Harvard scholar and Iranian affairs expert Majid Rafizadeh said it was inaccurate to describe the fighting as tribal.

“Although the government claims the conflict is tribal, the root of the issue is anchored in other critical underlying reasons,” he told Arab News Saturday.

“Ramhormorz is located near Masjad Soleiman and east of the Arab region Ahvaz in Khuzestan province, which provides roughly 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports,” he said.

“Although the province is the wealthiest when it comes to natural resources, it is ranked at the bottom of Iran’s 31 provinces regarding health, standard of living, life expectancy, poverty, air pollution, employment and housing.”

Ramhormorz, like many other counties in Khuzestan, has long been neglected, Rafizadeh added.

“This region is one of the most deprived economically, and it is discriminated against socially, ethnically, religiously and politically,” he said. “Many habitants are from the religious and ethnic minorities of Arabs and Bakhtiaris.”

Rafizadeh said there have been protests recently in Ramhormorz because the government-backed Caspian Credit Institute did not return depositors’ and investors’ money. “These underlying issues have created deep grievances among people.”

Woman killed, husband injured
[DAWN] GUJRAT: A woman was killed while her husband was injured in firing by her brothers over the marriage of choice in front of a court in Kharian along GT Road on Friday.

Shaista Noreen, a resident of Asmaila Sharif near Dinga, had contracted marriage with Abdul Malik Gujjar of the same village on her own will in December 2016, offending her family.

Her father, Bashir Gujjar, lodged an abduction case against Abdul Malik on Dec 12, 2016. Shaista and Abdul Malik appeared in the court where they registered a court marriage. The abduction case against Malik was quashed in March 2017.

On Friday, the couple appeared before a Kharian court in another case filed by Shaista’s family. As soon as they left the court compound in their car, Shaista’s brothers Nasir and Asim allegedly intercepted the car and opened firing on the couple, leaving both of them injured. The assailants expeditiously departed at a goodly pace.

Shaista succumbed to her injuries after being shifted to the Kharian Civil Hospital; however, Malik’s condition was stated to be out of danger.

Kharian Saddar police have started the paperwork but haven't done much else of honour killing against six people, including two brothers of Shaista, involved in the attack on the report of Abdul Malik.
