SPENGLER: The Lawyers' Civil War
The distinguished political scientist Angelo Codevilla coined the ominous term "cold civil war" to describe America’s precarious condition, adding: "Statesmanship’s first task is to prevent it from turning hot." The attempted massacre on June 14 of Republican congressmen and their staff by a deranged partisan of Sen. Bernie Sanders turned up the heat a notch, but it would be mistaken to attribute much importance to this dreadful outburst of left-wing rage. The augury of American fracture will not be street violence, but a constitutional crisis implicating virtually the whole of America’s governing caste. The shock troops in the cold civil war are not gunmen but lawyers.

A considerable portion of America’s permanent bureaucracy, including elements of its intelligence community, is engaged in an illegal and unconstitutional mutiny against the elected commander-in-chief, President Donald Trump. Most of the Democratic Party and a fair sampling of the Republican establishment wants to force Trump out of office, and to this end undertook an entrapment scheme to entice the president and his staff into actions which might be construed after the fact as obstruction of justice. By means yet undisclosed, the mutineers forced Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn from office and now seek to bring down the president for allegedly obstructing an investigation of Gen. Flynn that arose in the first place from the entrapment scheme.

...The Trump-Russia collusion story is nonsense, as its disseminators know better than anyone else. The object of the exercise is not to support the innuendo, but to launch an investigation which can provoke the White House into responses that might be construed as illegal. The intelligence leaks involved in framing the story alone are probably sufficient grounds to put several dozen senior officials in federal prison for double-digit terms. That consideration gauges the scale of the problem: the mutineers have committed multiple felonies, and their downside should the mutiny go wrong is not ignominious retirement but hard time at Leavenworth.

Trump’s one great advantage in all of this is that he has done nothing wrong. He did not obstruct justice because there is no crime. The mutineers’ only hope is to provoke him to take actions which might be construed as obstruction of justice in an investigation with no crime and no victim. Still, it is a moment of great danger for the American Republic. The mutiny has burned its bridges on the beach, and its perpetrators will risk everything to make it succeed. Whatever the outcome, the legitimacy of a political system designed to be litigious and oppositional will be called into question, and the polarization of American opinion will become more rather than less extreme.

US Chief Justice Roger Taney, 1857, on the human rights of black slaves in the USA: "they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect"
I wonder if/when a US high court decision will some day soon result in the US electorate coming to believe that the US justice/political system has no jurisdiction that they are bound to respect.

The Army's New Shower Policy: Bare with Us
[Family Research Council] There may be privates in the Army, but there's no privacy. That may be the biggest takeaway from the mandatory "transgender soldiers training," which took place on bases across the country Tuesday. In a major break from precedent, the military's largest branch is warning female soldiers to expect biological men in their showers. That's just one of the mind-blowing changes the Army is bracing for on July 1st, along with "male pregnancies" and taxpayer-funded gender reassignment. Unfortunately, this will be the new normal for the U.S. military until the Trump administration steps in and frees the Pentagon from the grip of the Obama years.

As most service members will tell you, Obama's radicalism didn't end when his term did. The social extremism that characterized the last eight years still haunts the Defense Department at a time when the military can least afford it. With ISIS torching its way across the Middle East, our troops shouldn't be torn between its role securing America and securing the Left's radical social agenda. The administration needs to decide: does it want an army of cultural guinea pigs or a lethal force defending America? Because the latest crises prove that our military can't -- and shouldn't have to -- do both.
Unfortunately there is much more at the link.

Infowars boss alludes to 'secret love child' with former FOX regular, and more...
[MAIL] Alex Jones has released what he claims is a secretly recorded conversation between himself and FBI Director James Comey Megyn Kelly - and is threatening to release the full covertly-recorded audio of their controversial Carnival Cruise interview before it airs on Sunday.

The Infowars founder on Thursday night hit back at Kelly before the interview even airs, claiming the NBC host will misrepresent his views after she spent the week being hammered by all sides for interviewing the Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist.
NBC 'misrepresents' nearly all views. What makes you special ?
In a video posted to Jones' Twitter, a recording of an apparent pre-interview phone call between the two is played, with a woman who sounds like Kelly saying: 'All I can do is give you my word and tell you if there's one thing about me, I do what I say I'm gonna do, and I don't double-cross.'
STOP! Just fok'n stop !
'You know you just became very fascinating to me. I just always thought you were this maybe, one-dimensional guy, like this is your thing...'
'Fascinating?' No, that would be Indiana Jones, not Alex.
'My goal is MONEY for your listeners and the left - you know, who will be watching some on NBC - to say, "Wow, that was more media garbage really interesting."'

GA manhunt: Escaped inmates accused of killing guards arrested in TN
[FOX] Two escaped Georgia inmates sought in the killing of two corrections officers were apprehended Thursday following a car chase in Tennessee.

Police in Shelbyville, Tenn. responded to a call about a home invasion, where Rowe and Dubose held an elderly couple captive and then fled in the couple's vehicle, Miles said. Officers responded and chased the pair. The inmates got into a wreck, left the vehicle and then led police on a foot chase before both men were taken into custody in Christiana, she said.

Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Rowe and Dubose surrendered after fleeing into some woods. He said that shots were fired, but did not say by whom. The inmates were unharmed and there were no reports of injuries to law enforcement personnel.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine said the bureau's agents will take part in processing the scene. The Tennessee Department of Transportation said traffic was being diverted on Interstate 24 east in Rutherford County until about 11 p.m.

Authorities say Rowe and Dubose overpowered and killed Sgt. Christopher Monica and Sgt. Curtis Billue early Tuesday on a bus that should have been secured as it carried 33 inmates between prisons southeast of Atlanta.

Soetoro sez nothing about Iran Hacking of Foggy Bottom deal makers
[NYPost] Just a week after the US Senate failed to stop the Iran nuclear deal, Tehran launched a major cyberattack on the State Department -- and the Obama administration kept it secret.

The Washington Free Beacon broke the story last week, revealing that Team Obama was even more craven than we’d thought.

The two sides were then still negotiating the "side deals" to finalize the accord; it wasn’t too late to stop it. And the attack showed that Iran wouldn’t remotely begin to moderate its ways, as the Obamaites had hoped.

Indeed, the hacking seemed to target the State personnel involved in those negotiations -- the better to wring a last few concessions, no doubt.

It’s obvious why Iran thought it could get away with it: Washington had proved willing to cede every point in order to reach a deal.

President Trump has yet to junk the deal, and understandably so: President Barack Obama gave away so much up front (billions in cash as well as hundreds of billions in sanctions relief) that America may be better off trying to make the rest of it stick.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Obama’s chief foreign-policy achievement was in fact a shameful defeat for the nation and the world.

Sailor missing from USS Shiloh found on board... USS Shiloh
[Seattle Times] TOKYO -- An American sailor whose disappearance at sea last week prompted a search by American and Japanese ships of thousands of square miles of ocean was found alive onboard his ship on Thursday, the U.S. Navy said.

The U.S. 7th Fleet said the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Peter Mims of Interlachen, Florida, were being investigated. It said Mims would be transferred to another ship for a medical evaluation and recommendations for follow-on care.

In a statement, the Navy did not comment on Mims’ condition or say where he was found on his ship, the guided missile cruiser USS Shiloh.

Mims disappeared last Thursday when the ship was in Japan’s southern waters and was believed to have fallen into the sea. A search was suspended Sunday after more than 50 hours of effort by the U.S. and Japanese navies and Japan’s coast guard.

The Rise and Fall of James Comey
[American Thinker] The New York Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Julius Caesar has once again thrust the works of William Shakespeare into the headlines. The current iteration features a Donald Trump look-a-like in the title role of a modern-day Julius Caesar who is brutally assassinated in the opening scene of Act III. The overt political message is not subtle. Other than being a head of state there is little or no similarity between Shakespeare’s depiction of the last days of Julius Caesar and the life and career of Donald Trump. However, there is another player on the national scene whose career does appear to perhaps mirror a number of Shakespearean characters who rose and ultimately fell as a result of their overriding ambition. That person is James Comey.

Shakespeare was influenced by the writings of Niccolo Machiavelli, whose seminal work, The Prince (1532), laid out his ideas on how the prince of a country could achieve power and, more importantly, retain it, utilizing devious and at times evil means if necessary. These underlying principles would apply not just to princes but to political schemers out to solidify their own positions within a ruling hierarchy.

While not directly comparing James Comey with any of English literature’s most notorious villains, there appears to be some very striking similarities insofar as a single-minded pursuit of power and influence.

Early in his career James Comey was never shy in prosecuting high profile cases in order to burnish his reputation. His determination to achieve a conviction, however specious, and at any cost would have made Javert of Les Miserables proud.

Jeff Sessions Ends Holder-era Slush Fund Designed to Funnel Money to Obama Allies
[LI] Under Eric Holder, the DOJ established a scheme by which the Executive could bypass Congress’ power of the purse and funnel money to Obama’s political allies. Companies targeted by the DOJ would agree to settlements, and part of the financial settlement was then ordered to be paid to left-wing interest groups such as La Raza. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has a put a stop to this "slush fund."

Writing in 2015, the Wall Street Journal explained the slush fund scheme.
Republicans talk often about using the "power of the purse" to rein in a lawless Obama administration. If they mean it, they ought to use their year-end spending bill to stop a textbook case of outrageous executive overreach.

This scandal comes courtesy of the Justice Department, which for 16 months has engaged in a scheme to undermine Congress’s spending authority by independently transferring dollars to President Obama’s political allies. The department is in the process of funneling more than half-a-billion dollars to liberal activist groups, at least some of which will actively support Democrats in the coming election.

It works likes this: The Justice Department prosecutes cases against supposed corporate bad actors. Those companies agree to settlements that include financial penalties. Then Justice mandates that at least some of that penalty money be paid in the form of "donations" to nonprofits that supposedly aid consumers and bolster neighborhoods.

The Justice Department maintains a list of government-approved nonprofit beneficiaries. And surprise, surprise: Many of them are liberal activist groups. The National Council of La Raza. The National Urban League. The National Community Reinvestment Coalition. NeighborWorks America (which awards grants to left-leaning community organization groups, and has been compared with Acorn).
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee stated that the slush fund scheme was so egregious that "someone should go to jail."

Marxist Wisconsin Prof Makes Six Figures Teaching About Inequality
[LI] Marxist Wisconsin Professor Rakes In $170,000 Per Year Teaching About Inequality And Oppression

The University of Wisconsin-Madison offers a sociology course informing students that capitalism creates "a world of great misery, inequality and oppression" that "is irrational in ways that hurt nearly everyone."

Erik Olin Wright, the well-heeled professor who teaches the graduate-level course, rakes a sweet annual salary of $170,000 per year.

The MacIver Institute, a free-market think tank, obtained the syllabus for Wright’s course by way of a public records request. The course is entitled: "Class, State, and Ideology: An Introduction to Social Science in the Marxist Tradition."

The affluent professor’s course syllabus, which goes on -- and on -- for almost 80 pages, declares that capitalism "generates harms" and "generates injustices" which "can be broadly grouped under three rubrics: exploitation, domination and irrationality."

Marxism, on the other hand, is an "emancipatory social science" that seeks to "fulfill the goal of generating critical social scientific knowledge relevant to the task of challenging systems of oppression."

"Human emancipation" is the goal of Marxism, the fat-cat professor explains.

Disgruntled Louisiana job hunters 'reportedly' open fire on F-150 and Trump sign in Indiana
[PJ] Several shots were fired at a truck flying a "Make America Great Again" flag and an American flag on a highway in Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon, Fox 59 reported. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident, which looks like a possible case of left-wing terrorism.
Exact motive still under investigation.
Police say no one was in injured in the incident.

The driver of the Malibu was described as a black male around the age of 23. The passenger was described as a light skinned black male with a sleeve tattoo on his right arm.
Close enough to see a sleeve tatoo, how about a tag number ?
The incident came one day before a left-wing gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game.
Well, somebody shot at me. Who would open fire on his own F-150 ?
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, two congressional staffers and two Capitol Police officers were wounded in the attack. Roger Williams, 67, of Texas sustained a leg-ankle injury when he dove for cover into the dugout.

Scalise was shot in the hip and remains hospitalized in critical condition. MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement Thursday night that Scalise "will be in the hospital for some time."

Justice Dept. issues statement warning against believing anonymous sources
[The Hill] The Justice Department issued a statement Thursday night warning the media and other Americans against believing anonymous sources, and warning that the Justice Department doesn't confirm statements from unnamed officials.

"Americans should exercise caution before accepting as true any stories attributed to anonymous 'officials,' particularly when they do not identify the country - let alone the branch or agency of government - with which the alleged sources supposedly are affiliated," Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wrote Thursday.

"Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations," the statement continues. "The Department of Justice has a long-standing policy to neither confirm or deny such allegations."

Many reporters quickly pointed out the statement as bizarre on Twitter, speculating that the Justice Department was attempting to squash existing leaks, or possible a story that hasn't yet been reported. It not immediately made clear if the statement was in reference to a specific story.

#1  Hat tip to the Deputy Attorney General for the reminder regarding rumor, innuendo, and media bullshi*. His memo however, does appear to conflict with the need for the work of Robert S. Mueller III, as a special counsel.

Without rumor, innuendo, and media bullshi* what does Mueller really have to work with ?

Father of Freed North Korean Prisoner Praises Trump, Knocks Obama: ‘The Results Speak for Themselves'
[Free Beacon] The father of the American who was recently sent home from North Korea praised the Trump administration on Thursday after his son was released and said the Obama administration's "results speak for themselves."

Fred Warmbier spoke to the media about his son Otto's comatose state and imprisonment by the North Korean regime. After thanking Sen. Rob Portman (R., Ohio) for his support and assistance, Warmbier recounted how his son was freed.

"When Otto was first taken, we were advised by the past administration to take a low profile while they worked to obtain his release," Warmbier said. "We did so without result. Earlier this year, Cindy and I decided the time for strategic patience was over, and we made a few media appearances and traveled to Washington to meet with Ambassador Joe Yun at the State Department."

He said it was his understanding that Ambassador Yun, at the direction of President Donald Trump, "aggressively pursued resolution of the situation."

"They have our thanks for bringing Otto home," he said.

Home Depot Co-Founder Bernie Marcus: I'm ‘So Worried About the Life' of President Trump
[Breitbart] Bernie Marcus, co-founder of Home Depot, says Wednesday’s shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, officers, and others at a congressional baseball practice makes him "so worried about the life of the President of the United States."

In an interview on the Fox Business Network Wednesday, Marcus said "I wish that the president would sit down with the leadership of the Democratic Party and say guys, let’s cut it out. Let’s get together and let’s start working together and accomplish what has to be accomplished."

Britain
Top University Islamic Society Gave out Leaflets Urging Terror Against West
[Breitbart] Durham University’s Islamic Society has been handing out booklets advocating terror, which were written by an Islamist preacher banned from the UK.

Zakir Naik, who is wanted by counter-terror authorities in India for having inspired terror attacks, was refused entry to the UK in 2010 by then-Home Secretary Theresa May for making comments that were "on their face supportive of Osama bin Laden, anti-Jewish and otherwise unacceptable".

The preacher’s booklet, which was distributed during ’Discover Islam Week’ in March, states that "every Muslim should be a terrorist to anti-social elements in society".

"Alcoholism" has driven Western countries to high levels of rape, molestation, incest, and AIDS, according to Naik, who writes that "a true Muslim" ought to be a terrorist to "such people".

The booklet, entitled Answers to Non-Muslims’ Common Questions about Islam, also claims Western culture has turned women into "concubines, mistresses, and social butterflies who are mere tools in the hands of pleasure seekers".

It also states that women should wear hijabs to "prevent them from being molested". A stall erected for Discover Islam Week displayed a sign inviting non-Muslim students to "try a hijab", according to photographs published by the student online newspaper The Tab.

Meet the Capital Police Officers Who Neutralized The Shooter, Some After Being Shot

[CBSNews] The three Capitol Police officers who immediately returned fire when a gunman attacked a Republican baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, are being called heroes.

Special Agents Crystal Griner, David Bailey and Henry Cabrera were on the scene when James T. Hodgkinson opened fire.

Griner and Bailey rushed him, despite their own wounds.

CBS News correspondent Chip Reid reports that as a member of the Republican leadership Rep. Steve Scalise travels with a protective detail of Capitol Police officers, so it's a good thing he was at the practice on Wednesday because his security team kept that baseball field from becoming a killing field.

"I know as sure as I'm standing here right now that there's no way we would have lived through that," Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Michigan, told "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley.

Bishop said two of the agents rushed onto the field as the congressmen and staffers fled.

"The problem is that he's got a rifle and they've got handguns, and it's not a fair fight at that point in time," Bishop said. "They knew they weren't going to probably hit him. They just were trying to give us cover."

A third agent shot at the gunman from behind the first-base dugout, where Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, sought safety.

"I yelled out, 'Is this friendly? Is this friendly? Are you friendly?' to the person who was firing behind our dugout," Flake said, "and gratefully it was a member of the Capitol Police."

Griner was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to her ankle. She graduated in 2006 from Maryland's Hood College, where she played on the basketball team.

"She is amazing, and she's a hero," said retired Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine. "She epitomized what being a hero's all about."

Bailey was treated and released for a minor injury. He's from Brazil and graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2007.

His friend, Racheal Brooks, wasn't surprised by Bailey's heroics.

"He always talked about becoming a police officer, and I remember when he first shared that he was working in Washington, D.C., and that he was a police officer he was so proud," Brooks said.

Rep. Joe Barton was there with his two sons. His gratitude to the officers who saved them was clear.

"Capitol Hill police immediately began to return fire," Barton said, choking up.

That sentiment echoed throughout the Capitol.

"We are, as ever, awed by the tremendous bravery of the Capitol Police," House Speaker Paul Ryan said.

Survivors said that if the Capitol Police officers had not been there they would have been sitting ducks.

Village official gunned down in southern Thailand
[Bangkok Post] An assistant village leader in Pattani province was gunned down about 100 meters from his home after finishing security duty on Thursday morning.

Local police were informed of the shooting at about 7:30am. They found the body of Mahamaporee Bato, the assistant chief of Ban Pratu Chang village, in Yarang district.

Witnesses said Mahamaporee was riding his motorcycle back home after finishing his security duty at the house of a local administrator. About 100 meters from his home, four people on two motorcycles rode up from behind and opened fire. After he collapsed onto the road, he was shot in the head at point-blank range and died instantly.

Police attributed the murder to the insurgency. Two years ago the assistant village head supervising security affairs was ambushed and shot in the leg after finishing his security duty.

Seattle gun tax failure? Firearm sales plummet, violence spikes after law passes

When the City of Seattle passed a tax on all sales of guns and ammunition, the measure was hailed as a way to defray the rising costs of gun violence.

But since the tax took effect, those costs have only risen as gun violence in the city has surged. And the tax has apparently brought in much less than city leaders projected it would.

"How much data do you need?" asked Dave Workman, senior editor of TheGunMag.com and member of the Second Amendment Foundation. "The data says the law has failed to prevent what they promised it would prevent."

The jets also "launched Arclight airstrikes in Abbassi district in Hawija, which left four hideouts destroyed and several myrmidons, most of whom were foreigners, killed," the statement added.

Hawija, located 55 KM west of Kirkuk, has been held by IS since mid-2014.

Somali troops end deadly Al-Shabab restaurant siege
[SHABELLENEWS] Somalia’s security forces have ended a night-long siege by al-Shabaab
... the personification of Somali state failure...
fighters at a popular Mogadishu restaurant where 20 people were taken hostage, police said.

At least 19 people were killed when a car driven by a jacket wallah rammed into the Posh Hotel insouth Mogadishu on Wednesday evening before gunnies rushed into Pizza House, an adjacent restaurant, and took 20 people hostage.

Soldiers surrounded the building and used guns mounted on the backs of vehicles to kill all five attackers, officials said.

The building was secured after dawn on Thursday, said senior Somali police office Mohammed Hussein.

Bodies of five girls and a Syrian man who worked as a chef were found inside the restaurant, said police.

"We are in control of the hotel but it was mostly destroyed by the suicide bomber," Abdi Bashir, a police officer, told Rooters news agency.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, the little lost dog had finished eating the rat terrier...
survivors recounted harrowing stories of hiding under tables, as armed attackers continued firing in the restaurant on Wednesday.

Attackers moved from room to room, looking for people, said a survivour.

"I never thought I would have the chance to see the sun again. They were killing people on sight," said Saida Hussein, a university student who survived the attack by hiding behind a large table on the ground floor.
Al Ahram adds:
Many of the 31 victims were killed at point-blank range, Hussein said. Nearly 40 other people were maimed.

Teenage victim fighting for her life after being shot by cousin
[DAWN] The Human Rights Commission of Pakistain (HRCP) on Wednesday drew the attention of National Commission on Human Rights (NCHR) towards an attempted honour killing case in the federal capital.

The teenaged victim is in a coma at the Pakistain Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) and doctors are not optimistic about her chances. Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Kinnison began his slow infiltration of the sewer system...
the suspected attacker is yet to be placed in durance vile
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
and the NCHR has directed the inspector general of the police (IGP) to submit a report on the case.

A letter sent by the HRCP to the NCHR states that on June 9 the girl, aged between 16 and 17, was shot thrice allegedly by her cousin in the Nilore village.

Seven months ago, the father of the girl, who belongs to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
and is settled in the Nilore village, decided to marry her off to a man much older than her. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
the girl left her home with a boy belonging to a local community.

Four days later, the couple was caught at Khanna Pul and brought back home. The girl was beaten and locked up inside the home. On June 9, the letter says, while the girl was reading the Koran at home, her cousin shot her and fled.

"Her father filed an FIR with the Nilore police the same day and is not ready to reach any compromise with his nephew though the family pressure might force him to do so."
"You destroyed my chief asset, you pollock! Now I have a permanent expense to support her, and no chance of selling her on the wife market."
Shahla Rafi, a social worker and a resident of the same locality, told Dawn that she reported the case to the HRCP as most of the honour killings cases were never reported or not pursued by families.

"Though the father had earlier beaten his daughter, I believe that he did not want to kill her. The cousin of the girl, who was allegedly drunk, shot her three times and fled."
Drunk? I suggest Papa demands his nephew's family supply him with a suitable replacement for the girl or the equivalent brideprice to what she was formerly worth on threat of feud. Or the lad himself to work off the value of what he destroyed, though the labour of an impulsive drunkard isn't likely to be worth much.
The girl wanted to marry a local person but her family was against it, Ms Shahla said.

Human Rights Commissioner for Islamabad Chaudhry Mohammad Shafique told Dawn that the HRCP approached him on Wednesday.

"I immediately contacted the IGP and directed him to submit a report about the incident and the progress on the arrest of the suspect," he said.

"Moreover, as such victims don’t get proper care at hospitals I have also sought a report from Pims regarding treatment being provided to the girl and her condition."

Mr Shafique said though the father of the girl had lodged an FIR against the suspect, in a number of cases cousins or brothers killed women and in the end the fathers forgave them in the courts.

"So it will be very important to record the statement of the girl and in case she does not survive the statement of her mother will be very important," he said.

A political figure of the area, requesting anonymity, said efforts were underway to hush up the case. NCHR Chairman retired Justice Ali Nawaz Chohan told Dawn that normally the commission does not interfere in the investigation of the police but when it is learnt that the investigation has been stopped or slowed down the rights watchdog seeks a report from the police.

"We will definitely look into the issue so that the girl gets justice. We did the same in the Taiba Bibi torture case and questioned the police," he said.

Cattle slaughter crackdown ripples through India’s leather industry
Unexpected consequences? Oh dear.
[DAWN] In the backstreets of Agra’s Moslem quarter, where shoes have been made for centuries, small-scale manufacturers are firing workers and families cutting back on spending as a government crackdown on cattle slaughter ripples through the community.

The election of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) three years ago has emboldened right-wing Hindu groups to push harder for protection of the cow, an animal they consider sacred.

Authorities in India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, started closing down unlicenced abattoirs in March, immediately hitting production and sales in the Moslem-dominated meat industry.

Last month Modi’s government also banned trading cattle for slaughter, including not just cows, whose killing was already outlawed in most states, but also buffalo, an animal used for meat and leather.

Now the squeeze is spreading to others in the Moslem minority and to lower-caste Hindus who cart cattle, labour in tanneries and make shoes, bags and belts -- including for big name brands such as Zara and Clarks.

Frequent attacks by right-wing Hindus against workers they accuse of harming cattle have further rattled the industry.

Afghanistan
Tora Bora captured? Taliban dispute ISIS claim
[FoxNews] The Islamic State terror network claimed its fighters captured Usama bin Laden’s Tora Bora hideout in eastern Afghanistan, but the Taliban disputed the claim on Thursday.

ISIS released an audio recording on Wednesday saying its signature black flag was flying over the mountain range.

A Taliban spokesman denied ISIS was in control, claiming instead that the Taliban had pushed ISIS back from some territory the rival militants had taken in the area, The New York Times reported.

Meanwhile, a Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, told The Associated Press the Taliban had pushed ISIS back from some territory the rival militants had taken previously in the Tora Bora area.

Mujahid claimed more than 30 ISIS fighters were killed in the battle. He also added that U.S. airstrike on Taliban positions on Wednesday that killed 11 of its fighters had benefitted ISIS.

Earlier, Afghan officials said that fighting between ISIS and the Taliban, who had controlled Tora Bora, began on Tuesday, but could not confirm that ISIS captured the hideout.

Afghan Defense Ministry’s spokesman, Daulat Waziri did not say if ISIS was in complete control of Tora Bora but said Afghan forces killed five ISIS fighters in the Chaparhar district of eastern Nangarhar province and pushed them out of the region.

The area’s remote location makes it difficult to verify any of the claims.

Kazakhstan begins theological service for prison inmates
[RFE/RL] Kazakhstan has introduced a theological service in penitentiaries to prevent inmates from being radicalized. The Kazakh state corrections service said on June 13 that the service was introduced to curb the spreading of radical Islamism, extremism, and terrorism among inmates.

The service also said that local authorities and nongovernmental organizations are involved in programs to prevent the radicalization of inmates. According to the service, more than 500 Kazakh inmates have been convicted of terror-related crimes.

Officials said earlier that individuals convicted of other crimes sometimes get radicalized after coming into contact with inmates convicted of Islamic extremism. In neighboring Kyrgyzstan, inmates convicted of religious extremism and terrorism charges serve terms in separate penitentiaries to avoid inmates' becoming radicalized.

"As part of the fight against terrorism and following a patrol carried out near the province of Tamanrasset, army troops shot down two Lions of Islam in the afternoon of Thursday," said the source.

Two FMPK machine guns, a large amount of ammunition and a four-wheel drive vehicle were retrieved during the operation, specified the source.

"This new operation, which is added to the series of positive results obtained on the ground by the National People's Army forces, shows permanent vigilance and availability of the troops throughout the Algerian territory to thwart any attempt aiming at undermining the security and stability of the country," concluded the statement.

Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, Algeria faces ongoing terrorist threats.

said it was "concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gazoo," but placed the blame for the unfolding crisis on the Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, terror group that rules the Paleostinian enclave.

In a State Department news briefing on Tuesday, spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the administration was "aware that the Israeli cabinet approved the PA, the Paleostinian Authority’s, request to reduce electricity in Gazoo. Beyond that, I’m not going to weigh in, but we do remain deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation right there."

She said however that "no one should lose sight of the fact, of this fact, that Hamas bears the greatest responsibility for the current situation in Gazoo."

"We continue to underscore the need for international support for Gazoo’s recovery and humanitarian assistance to the Paleostinian people," she added.

Major US academic body ratifies anti-boycott resolution
[IsraelTimes] Israeli minister says Modern Language Association’s vote is a ’major blow’ to divestment efforts against Israel.

The Modern Language Association ratified a resolution opposing academic boycotts of Israel in a vote by its members, drawing praise from the Jewish state, which called it a major blow to boycott efforts.

Voting on MLA resolution 2017-1 concluded at midnight June 1 and the results were posted on the MLA website on Wednesday.

In January the annual MLA Delegates Assembly rejected a resolution calling for a boycott of Israel and also approved a call to refrain from boycott activities. To be accepted as policy, the latter resolution required approval by at least 10 percent of the MLA’s 18,279 eligible voters.

The proposal eventually squeezed by with 1,954 in favor and 885 against.

Established over a century ago, the MLA is the principal US body for scholars of literature and language, and has some 24,000 registered members.

Resolution 2017-1 states that "endorsing the Paleostinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel contradicts the MLA’s purpose to promote teaching and research on language and literature" and contradicts an earlier resolution that condemns boycotts against scholars.

Boycotting Israeli academics could also "curtail debates with representatives of Israeli universities... thereby blocking possible dialogue and general scholarly exchange," the resolution noted.

Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan congratulated the MLA and said the decision represented "a major blow to ongoing efforts by the BDS movement for an academic boycott of Israel."

"This victory is a major blow to the BDS campaign in the academic arena," added Erdan, who is also public security minister, in a statement early Thursday. "Universities and academic associations are increasingly rejecting BDS as being opposed to the most basic values of academic freedom."

Erdan’s Strategic Affairs Ministry deals with boycott efforts against Israel.

Pro-Paleostinian groups campaign around the world for boycott, divestment, and sanctions against Israel in what is known as the BDS movement. The activities include calls for academic boycotts that have had mixed success with universities and other institutes stressing the importance of academic freedom and dialogue.

ISIS ammunition depot blast kills several jihadists in Deir Ezzor
[ALMASDARNEWS] Scores of ISIS turbans have been killed and injured as a huge kaboom rocked one of the group’s ammunition depot in Deir Ezzor amid continuous festivities with the government forces.

Whether the blast was caused by an Arclight airstrike or a man-made error is still unknown.

Elsewhere in the embattled city, several ISIS jihadists were killed while attempting to break through the Army’s defensives amid an eye-blinding sandstorm.

Death Eaters’ last refuge in the city, the Joint Operations Command said.

Lt. Gen. Abudl-Amir Yarallah, commander of the JOC’s Nineveh Operations, said in a statement forces had taken over the Bab Sinjar area, effectively severing all routes to the Old City and putting turbans under a consummate siege.

Due to the impassable streets of the Old City, the 9th division’s armored vehicles will stop at besieging the area, leaving the invasion to infantry forces from the army, the Counter-Terrorism Service and the Rapid Response forces, Brig. Gen. Saleh Harz, commander of the 34th brigade of the army’s 9th division, told Almirbad website.

Iraqi commanders have recently said that a few hundred IS fighters remained in the Old City, the group’s last refuge in western Mosul from where the group first declared the establishment of its rule over a third of both Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Iraqi government forces recaptured eastern Mosul in January and pushed towards the western side of the city in mid February.

Forces are also sweeping through neighboring al-Shifa district, an area with major health and medical facilities.

Putin offers political asylum to Comey
*Snicker*
[The Hill] Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday offered to give political asylum to former FBI Director James Comey, poking at tensions between Comey and President Trump.

"If Comey will be under the threat of political persecution, we are ready to accept him here," Putin said at a press conference, according to Russian state media outlet TASS.

Comey testified last week that Trump pressured him to "let go" of the FBI investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn before Trump fired him. Comey acknowledged leaking his personal memos about his conversations with Trump to the media, which the White House has seized on to attack the former FBI head's credibility.

Putin compared Comey's decision to leak details of conversations with Trump to the actions of Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker who was granted asylum by Russia.

"This is strange. How then is the director of the FBI any different from Snowden? He is not a head of the special services, but a human rights activist," Putin said.

The U.S. intelligence community concluded last year that Russia interfered in the presidential election specifically to help Trump win. The Justice Department, the FBI and the Senate and House Intelligence committees are all investigating Russian meddling int he 2016 presidential election as well as potential links between Trump's campaign and the Kremlin.

Putin has denied any interference in the U.S. election.

Tagab District Cleared But Taliban Threat Remains
[Tolo News] Local officials in Badakhshan said on Thursday that after a seven-day operation, security forces have cleared the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
from Tagab district’s insecure areas.

Badakhshan Police Chief Abdul Khaliq Aqsaee said the Taliban had stationed themselves one kilometer from the district center for the past two years.

According to him, government forces slowed down their military operations with the arrival of Ramadan but when the Taliban attacked three districts ‐ Arghanj Khwah, Khash and Tagab ‐ a joint military operation was launched.

"We started a joint military operation one week ago to clear Tagab district in Badakhshan. Fortunately, we succeeded to clear the district. Eight of the murderous Moslems were killed, 15 maimed and three of them were locked away
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
," the police chief said.

Local officials said the Taliban has now fled to Warduj district after they were pushed back from Tagab.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, the little lost dog backed into the corner and showed its teeth. And what big teeth they were!...
a number of Badakhshan residents said Badakhshan’s districts will remain under threat by murderous Moslems until Yamgan and Warduj districts are cleared of the Taliban.

"Taliban will retake the cleared areas if outposts are not established by government forces," said Sher Ali Qasim, a civil society activist in Badakhshan.

"The clearance of other districts will be meaningless unless government clears Yamgan and Warduj districts of Taliban," said Mujtaba, a resident of Badakhshan.

Responding to this call by residents, the police chief said the security forces will start clearing the two districts next month.

"We have an operational plan after Eid. We will clear Yamgan and Warduj districts hopefully," Aqsaee said.

Despite the Taliban having control over Yamgan and Warduj districts; the myrmidon group is active in parts of Badakhshan’s nine districts as well as in parts of PD8 and PD9 of Faizabad city, the bustling provincial capital.

Man Who Robbed Bank to Avoid Living With Wife Sentenced to Home Confinement
[Free Beacon] A 71-year-old man who robbed a bank in Kansas City, Kan. to avoid living with his wife was sentenced to home confinement this week.

A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced Lawrence John Ripple to six months of home confinement; three years of supervised probation, including 50 hours of community service; and ordered him to pay $227.27 to the bank he robbed, according to the Kansas City Star.

Ripple robbed the Bank of Labor in Kansas City in September. He walked into the bank and handed a note to the bank teller that said, "I have a gun, give me money." After the bank teller handed over $2,924, Ripple sat down in the bank lobby waiting to be arrested by police.

Court records said Ripple wrote the note in front of his wife, telling her he would rather be in jail than live at home with her.

Chekasha Ramsey, Ripple's public defender, told U.S. District Court Judge Carlos Murguia that the defendant suffered from depression after undergoing heart surgery in 2015.

"Ripple said that he felt better after finding the right medication and said prison would be more of a punishment for his wife than for him," the Star reported.

US adds 3 Islamic State group leaders to terrorism blacklist
[MILITARYTIMES] The Trump administration on Thursday added three senior members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group to a terrorism blacklist, including the group's leader and chief recruiter in India and a recruiter for attackers who carried out two deadly assaults in Europe.

The State Department and Treasury said the trio have committed or pose a significant risk of committing terrorist attacks that threaten Americans or U.S. national interests. The move adds them to a list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists, freezing any assets they may have in U.S. jurisdictions and barring Americans from any transactions with them.

Authorities in La Belle France and Belgium have identified one of the men, Oussama Atar, as an organizer of both the November 2015 attack in Gay Paree and the March 2016 attack in Brussels that together killed 162 people. The Belgian-Moroccan national is believed to have played a major role in setting up the cell that is blamed for the two strikes.

The designation also applies to Mohammad Armar, who was identified as a leader and head recruiter for the Islamic State in India. The State Department said Armar has recruited dozens of IS sympathizers throughout India who are plotting attacks, acquiring weapons and scouting locations for training camps.

The third man added to the list is Mohammed Al Binali from Bahrain, who has appeared in numerous propaganda videos encouraging fellow Bahrainis, particularly police and soldiers, to join the Islamic State, according to the State Department.

Did The Special Counsel's Office Just Leak Against Trump?
[Jonathan Turley] The Washington Post is reporting that Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election has now expanded to look into whether President Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice. What is most notable is not the investigation of obstruction of justice. Rather it is the fact of the leak that is alarming. Former FBI Director James Comey (who followed Mueller at the Bureau and has had a long relationship with Mueller) just admitted to leaking damaging information against Trump.

Comey, who was tasked with investigating leakers, became a leaker himself. Now, the Special Counsel’s office is accused by Trump’s counsel of leaking informing damaging to Trump -- an office that could be asked to consider unauthorized leaks as part of its investigation. While such leaks could come from witnesses, those witnesses appear in large part high-ranking members of the Trump administration unless they came from a briefing with members of Congress.

The leak became a torrent with the disclosure that Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Adm. Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency and Richard Ledgett, Rogers’ departed deputy, all agreed to participate in interviews with Mueller’s investigators as part of the investigation.

#1  Let me ask about this. Back in July 2016, Comey said: 'no reasonable prosecutor' would bring a case against Clinton for emails...

In the face of overwhelming evidence against Clinton that Comey outlined earlier, he came up with the above statement that no reasonable prosecutor would bring a case against Clinton. Despite this not being his prerogative, he assumed the role of a Federal prosecutor rather than just provide the evidence.

Now, contrast this with the current fake special prosecutor investigation fishing expedition witch hunt where not a smidgen of evidence has been presented by anyone that would support the claim of Russian collusion by the Trump team. Now, the witch hunt has been expanded to look into obstruction of justice where no law has been broken. Where's the "no reasonable prosecutor" conclusion in this fake, B.S., no evidence investigation by Special Counsel Mullah Mueller? Pull the plug and drain the swamp bigly. DOJ needs to start pushing real investigations where real criminality has occurred. That means cleaning out the mess left from the last admin., restoring faith in our system of justice and stop the pitting of one group against another group. Halt the activities of the last crony justice system now. Stop the weaponizing of the government against its citizens and its duly elected president.

The leader of the pro-secular Republican People’s Party, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, calls the "march for justice" after parliamentarian Enis Berberoglu was convicted and sentenced to 25 years for revealing state secrets.

Kilicdaroglu calls the verdict "palace-motivated," a reference to President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
. "Let the whole world hear, we are facing a dictatorial regime in Turkey, in our own land," he says.

The case of Berberoglu, a former journalist and politician, stems from a 2015 story by the Cumhuriyet newspaper suggesting Turkey’s intelligence service had smuggled weapons to Salafist tough guys in Syria. His lawyer has appealed the verdict.

'$30,000, House In Pakistan': What Taliban Promised Chef To Kill UAE Diplomats
[NDTV] Thirty thousand dollars and a house in Pakistain. That's what it took chef Sayed Mahboob Agha to set off explosives that killed six UAE diplomates and six others in the Kandahar Governor's guesthouse in January this year. This is what a joint Afghanistan, US (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and UAE probe has concluded, according to Afghan Intelligence service, the NDS.

Presenting the findings in Kabul on Thursday, the NDS head, Masoom Stanekzai said the chef travelled six times to Quetta and Chaman in Balochistan

leaders to specifically target the UAE Ambassador in Afghanistan.

Mr Stanekzai, who briefed President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
two days ago, said the chef's co-workers smuggled in the explosives - a mix of RDX and TNT - in bread baskets. The explosives were placed in a sofa and detonated by remote control, he added.

Afghanistan and the UAE have demanded Pakistain hand over three plotters. The UAE delegation was in Kandahar to discuss developmental projects.

The deadliest attack on UAE diplomats killed five of them instantly and was the first against diplomats from the Gulf in Afghanistan. The UAE Ambassador to Afghanistan Mohammed Abdullah al-Kaabi died of his injuries later. The Kandahar Governor, Humayun Azizi, also maimed in the attack was treated abroad for two months before returning.

Kandahar's notorious anti-Taliban police chief, General Abdul Raziq left the room moments before the blast. The Taliban, at the time, denied responsibility saying it was a "result of local rivalry."

Iranian boat shines laser at US aircraft in Strait of Hormuz
Playing little dominance games.
[Ynet] An Iranian naval patrol boat shined a laser at a US Marine Corps helicopter flying over the Strait of Hormuz in what officials said was an unsafe encounter.
I say we go with the BB-62 option.
US Navy Cmdr. Bill Urban said Wednesday that the Iranian vessel also turned its spotlight on two Navy ships that were moving through the strait on Tuesday. Urban, a US Fifth Fleet front man, said the Iranian boat came within 800 yards of the USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship, and scanned it from bow to stern with the spotlight. It also shined the light on the USS Cole, a guided missile destroyer.

The Marine CH-53E Super Stallion heavy lift helicopter automatically fired flares in response to the laser. No one was injured and there was no damage to the ships.

A third American vessel, the USNS Washington Chambers cargo ship, was accompanying the others but was not affected.

Urban said the action was considered unsafe because "illuminating helicopters with lasers at night is dangerous as it creates a navigational hazard that can impair vision and can be disorienting to pilots using night vision goggles.

While it has not yet been determined when the incident occurred as police were informed about it after a considerable delay -- a troubling detail in itself -- the audacious escape of two allegedly ’high-profile Lion of Islams’ from the city’s main jail is alarming. Members of the banned sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi
... a 'more violent' offshoot of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain. LeJ's purpose in life is to murder anyone who's not of utmost religious purity, starting with Shiites but including Brelvis, Ahmadis, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Rosicrucians, and just about anyone else you can think of. They are currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of al-Qaeda ...
, the men -- who are still under trial -- are accused of multiple murders. According to an official from the city’s counterterrorism department, one of them has slain 57 people, while the other had carried out seven assassination'>assassinations. As a consequence of the prisoners’ escape, 12 jail officials have been suspended.

It is difficult to overstate the gravity of this security lapse. Some of the most hard-core bandidos bully boyz in Pakistain are incarcerated within the walls of the Central Prison; it was a given that security measures had to be ironclad. The institution is an obvious target for resourceful gunnies on the outside seeking to spring their compatriots from behind bars. In October 2014, law-enforcement personnel discovered members of a banned outfit in the process of digging a 45-metre-long tunnel from within a house in a nearby colony towards a prison barracks housing 100 ’dangerous Lion of Islams’. The men were only 10 metres from their target when they were apprehended. It was claimed in the aftermath of this incident that security at the prison had been further enhanced. How then have two individuals belonging to one of the most violent bully boy groups managed to elude all the measures put in place to keep them under lock and key? Jail personnel have been known to collude with inmates either in return for money or out of fear; that is obviously where the investigation must begin. The delay in reporting the escape also raises questions. In short, every effort must be made to get to the bottom of the incident. There is already far too much evidence that law-enforcement authorities are not as vigilant as they should be about bully boy outfits. Consider the fact that a large number of them still maintain a digital presence unhindered, and that the banned sectarian group Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat
...which is the false nose and plastic mustache of the murderous banned extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain, whatcha might call the political wing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi...
is reportedly operating in rural Sindh under a new name. We simply cannot afford to be lax on this front.

Philippine troops capture Maute brother in Marawi seige
[Straits Times] Philippine security forces yesterday arrested one of seven brothers behind the Islamist insurgents that have held parts of the southern city of Marawi for more than three weeks.

Mohammad Noaim Maute, described as a trained bomb-maker, was nabbed at a checkpoint in Cagayan de Oro, just after dawn. Maute, said to be an Arabic teacher, was found with a fake Mindanao State University identity card.

Military spokesman Restituto Padilla said, "The subject was involved in bombing incidents in Mindanao previously… He is the youngest of the Maute clan. They have seven children by the matriarch, and he is the youngest."

He said Maute was also involved in the killing of two of six sawmill workers abducted by the militant group in April.

Maute denied that he was a "bomb expert", and said he was a cousin, not a brother, of Omarkhayam and Abdullah Maute.

Most of the other six Maute brothers are believed to still be in Marawi. Their parents were taken into custody last week. The subject was involved in bombing incidents in Mindanao previously. They have seven children by the matriarch, and he is the youngest.

The mother, Romato Maute, also known as Farhana, was charged with rebellion yesterday. Believed to be a financier of the Mautes, she was arrested on June 9 as she was being spirited out of Lanao del Sur province.

Mr Zia Alonto Adiong, a politician helping in rescue and relief efforts, said residents fleeing Marawi had seen dozens of bodies in an area where intense fighting has taken place. Adiong said, "Dead bodies, at least 100, scattered around the encounter area."

The army has said 290 people have been killed in the more than three weeks of fighting - 206 militants, 58 soldiers and 26 civilians.

"They have planned for this for a long time and may have laid caches of arms in certain areas that will sustain them as they move into the interiors when they make a retreat or consolidation," said Brigadier-General Padilla.

Lieutenant-Colonel Jay-Ar Herrera, spokesman for Task Force Marawi, said that soldiers had begun moving into districts held by some 100 to 200 militants. He said, "As you observed, there are no air strikes, so we have neutralized several defensive key positions. In terms of territory, the battlefield right now constitutes 10 per cent of Marawi, specifically in four barangays (districts)," adding that snipers remain a problem.

He said skirmishes were still happening near three bridges that government forces had secured.

Southern Thailand's forgotten insurgency
We haven't forgotten, thanks to ryuge.
[The Diplomat] By Austin Bodetti

The insurgency remains difficult to resolve in part because of the insurgents' secrecy. Though none doubt that the insurgents, who claim to champion the national interests of Thailand’s Malay, Muslim minority, desire independence for the region, few can confirm or even identify who represents them. The Thai government is now negotiating with apparent representatives of the insurgency, yet experts have noted a divide between younger military commanders in southern Thailand and older political leaders, many of whom reside far from the battlefield in Malaysia. Negotiations exclude the National Revolutionary Front (BRN), which spearheads the insurgency in the south, undermining the credibility of the peace process and the Thai government’s commitment to it.

The Thai military insisted that negotiations would continue after the bombing, which the BRN likely perpetrated. “The attack is not getting in the way of the peace talks, which we are pushing forward,” said Major General Sith Trakulwong. “Despite the violence, the peace talks will go on.”

In the face of such difficulties, Bangkok appears to lack interest in resolving the insurgency through either a military victory or political settlement. Instead, the military dictatorship has redoubled its efforts to muzzle the press and quash dissent, inserting itself into everyday life. Officials have prioritized foreign policy over national security, looking to improve their military relationship with the United States and planning for Prime Minister Prayut’s visit to the White House. Meanwhile a May 22 bombing in Bangkok indicated that the south will prove far from the Thai government’s only dilemma in terms of security. With other concerns dominating Bangkok’s attention it was only on June 5, almost a month after the supermarket bombing in Pattani, that the government saw fit to increase patrols along the Malaysian-Thai border.

Thailand’s military prefers governance to war, explaining its challenges with the insurgency. “The core pursuits of the Thai military are playing politics and engaging in business activities (including illegal activities, such as smuggling); when the occasion arises, commanders are not averse to killing a few dozen unarmed civilians,” Duncan McCargo, a professor at Leeds University, argued in his book about the insurgency. “The Thai military had no strong grasp of counterinsurgency techniques or strategy, subjects which were not really taught at the Chulachomklao Military Academy.” Rather than confronting the difficulties that it faces in the south, the military dictatorship has opted to avoid or ignore them, reinvigorating the insurgency.

Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.): 'Trump partially to blame for hostility that led to lawmaker shooting'
[The Hill] Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) said President Trump is "partially" to blame for the hostility in the nation that led to the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and others at a congressional baseball practice.

"I would argue the president has unleashed, partially, again not in anyway totally, but partially to blame for the demons that have been unleashed," Sanford said Thursday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

He referenced Trump's remarks during the campaign that he'd like to punch a protester in the face, saying the comments were "bizarre" and "we’ve ought to call it as such."

"They’ll say, ’If the guy at the top can say anything to anybody any time, why can’t I?' " Sanford said.

He said he believes many on Capitol Hill are taking the time for some "heavy soul-searching" after Wednesday's shooting, which left Scalise in critical condition and four others injured.

Trump Orders Government to Stop Work on Y2K Bug, 17 Years Later
[BLOOMBERG] Seventeen years after the Year 2000 bug came and went, the federal government will finally stop preparing for it.

The Trump administration announced Thursday that it would eliminate dozens of paperwork requirements for federal agencies, including an obscure rule that requires them to continue providing updates on their preparedness for a bug that afflicted some computers at the turn of the century. As another example, the Pentagon will be freed from a requirement that it file a report every time a small business vendor is paid, a task that consumed some 1,200 man-hours every year.

"We’re looking for stuff everyone agrees is a complete waste of time," Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told news hounds at the White House. He likened the move to the government "cleaning out our closets."

Deregulation is a major ambition of President Donald Trump

’s agenda; as one example, he has signed more laws rolling back his predecessor’s regulations than the combined total of the three previous presidents since the process was established by the 1999 Congressional Review Act.
To be fair, between his predecessor's phone & pen and his encouragement of the bureaucratic drive to write regulations, a great many more regulations than usual were written in the past eight years. It's a proper Augean stables, needing a Niagara Falls to hose out.
Seven of the more than 50 paperwork requirements the White House eliminated on Thursday dealt with the Y2K bug, according to a memo OMB released. Officials at the agency estimate the changes could save tens of thousands of man-hours across the federal government.

Two NPA leaders surrender in Luzon
[Manila Bulletin] Two ranking members of the New People’s Army surrendered to Philippine government forces last week, based on a belated report.

Lieutenant Colonel Eugenio Julio Osias said the identities of the names of the rebels were temporarily withheld for security reasons. He said, "Through our persistent efforts, we were able to convince the NPA rebels to surrender."

Both surrenderees were team leader of the NPA's Kilusang Larangang Guerilya (KLG) Montes that operates in the tri-boundaries of Abra, Mountain Province and Ilocos Sur.

One of the surrenderees said that what drove him to give up was the ‘purposeless’ battles and wars which have affected the lives of thousands of young people for the past five decades.

Afghanistan
Pakistani Militia Backed Daesh in Tora Bora Offensive: NDS
The ISI has been using trained jihadis since the 1950s as a tool of policy. Why change now, just because the group is connected to a world-wide conquest effort?
Update at 9:45 a.m. EDT: My apologies. I forgot that the Taliban (Afghan branch) were a tool of the ISI first, making this even more interesting.
[Tolo News] Abdul Saboor Sabet, the head of the National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
claimed on Thursday that Pak militia fully supported ISIS in their offensive against the Tora Bora region this week in eastern Nangarhar province.

In a trip to Nangarhar’s Chaparhar district on Thursday, Sabet said that Pak militia are still backing ISIS Death Eaters in the region.

"ISIS Death Eaters sustained heavy loses, whenever they suffer a toll, they get reinforcements from the other side of the border who are the Pak militias. The (Afghan) public uprising forces are bravely defending all districts against the enemies," said Sabet.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shouting match, the spittle had reached unprecedented levels...
General Zaman Waziri, the commander of 201 Selab Army Corps has ordered the government forces to eliminate ISIS Death Eaters in Tora Bora region and in Chaparhar district within 24 hours.

This new development takes place a day after ISIS operatives took control of the strategic region of Tora Bora located in Pacheragam district of Nangarhar following a week-long battle with Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
hard boys.

"At least 700 ISIS Death Eaters had been killed including their leader and they suffered major loses in Kot and Achin districts. They chose another way and attacked Sulaimankhail, then they relocated from Pacheragam to Chapalyar region, however ... now they are moving toward Pacheragam and then towards Tora Bora," said Waziri.

The fresh wave of violence in the region has left dozens of families homeless with many others trying to evacuate the area to save their lives.

ISIS takes control of Tora Bora region after Waziri stated that up to 700 ISIS operatives had been killed in Nangarhar as a result of a military operation by security forces over the past three months.

Deaths as suicide bombers hit Shia mosque in Kabul
[Al Jazeera] An attack at a Shia mosque in the Afghan capital of Kabul killed at least four people and maimed eight more on Thursday, security officials said.

The attackers then took refuge in the mosque's kitchen before detonating a bomb.

PA reportedly blocks news sites affiliated with Hamas, Dahlan
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian rights group head: Decision ’harms our people, putting us among the few states that block internet sites.

The Paleostinian Authority’s Attorney General Ahmad Barak on Thursday ordered the blocking of 11 news sites belonging to political rivals, including Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", -- drawing ire from the Gazoo-based terrorist organization and from a Paleostinian rights group.

The decision, reported by Paleostinian media, came amid a series of measures taken by the PA intended to force Hamas to cede control of the Gazoo Strip -- which it seized in 2007 after a violent conflict with Fatah -- including substantially reducing the funding for electricity and medical aid.

The sites affiliated to Hamas that are to be blocked include Pal Info Center and al-Shehab.

Some of the sites are reportedly connected to Mohammad Dahlan, a rival to PA President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
in the Fatah party, who was expelled by Abbas from the PA in 2011. These sites include Fatah Voice and Amad.

The PA has not officially commented on the decision to block these sites, nor could a representative of the PA Attorney General’s office be reached for comment.

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
the Paleostinian news agency Ma’an, which is not affiliated with Hamas or Dahlan, said Paleostinian officials confirmed the decision.

The Hamas outlet al-Shehab reported that its hosting company received orders to block the news site.

Ammar Dwaik, head of the Paleostinian rights group The Independent Commission for Human Rights, which is based both in the West Bank and Gazoo, slammed the decision.

"Blocking Internet sites (especially news sites) is contrary to the principles of human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
, specifically the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the right to information," he said in a statement on Facebook.

He added the move would "harm our people, putting us among the few states in the world that block internet sites." He also argued it would harm the Paleostinian economy, as it would drive Paleostinians to seek Israeli internet providers.

Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum said the decision "reflects Abbas’s dictatorial approach... in dealing with the Paleostinian people." He called on Paleostinians to "thwart all of Abbas’s schemes to confiscate freedoms."

(LJ) holy warriors on Tuesday, police sources said.

Under-trial prisoners, Sheikh Muhammad Mumtaz alias Firoon and Muhammad Ahmed Khan alias Muna had beat feet from the judicial complex of Central Prison Karachi on Tuesday in what was described as a daredevil move.

Startling revelations about the incident indicate that the prisoners had escaped on Tuesday by breaking its grill while the jail staff came to know about their escape on Wednesday when they were supposed to be presented before the court inside the jail, officials said.

Gulshan Superintendent of Police (SP) Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto told Dawn that the apprehended jail staff told the police that they had presented both prisoners belonging to LJ before the 'court' located in the judicial complex inside the jail premises on Tuesday but they "escaped" by breaking the grill of the court.

He added that the arrested officers said they had not "realised" that the prisoners had escaped for a whole day, only to find them "missing" on Wednesday when the convicts were to be presented before the court.

The Gulshan SP said the police were further investigating the case.

"The rebel Houthi militias fired a missile at a United Arab Emirates aid ship carrying medical equipment while departing from the Yemeni port of al-Mokha," the General Command of the UAE Armed Forces said in a statement on Thursday.

The attack caused no damage to the vessel, but left one crew member injured, added the General Command, affirming that it is following up and tracking down those behind the attack.

The UAE command reiterated its warning against "the danger posed by the Houthi belligerent activities and arms smuggling on the safety of international navigation in this vital part of the world."

The statement called upon the international community to exercise more pressures on the Houthi militias to comply with UN Security Council Resolution No 2216 on prevention of such "criminal activities."

#1  Am I allowed to mention Islamic Values? Or is that not considered PC here?

Am I racist if I point out that Moslem Values actually are Moslem Values? Or is that too radical a concept for rantburg to allow or Conscience?

Islam is not going to have what we consider normal self evident Values. So if they target a Hospital ship or a Hospital per se...they don't feel any shame or disconnect. They feel perfectly at ease in their Islamic reality with setting up a rocket emplacement next to a Daycare center. They are Moslems.

We expect them to have OUR Values. They are actually Moslems and they don't have our values You can erase this post now for telling you the sky is Blue.

#2  Sorry, Hemingway - but it isn't "Moslem Values". At least not as a primary reason.

Using your simplistic logic, 291 homicides (that's murders - try to follow me here) in Chicago are "OUR values" Baltimore's race to match them? Moslem values. Some guy shooting up a bunch of politicians on a ball field in the glorious state of Virginia? Our, or Moslem values. Two prisoners from that bastion of Southern Values, Georgia, killing two guards and carjacking their way to Tennessee? Whose values.

Sounds ludicrous, Hemingway? Sounds kind of stupid, doesn't it?

Maybe it's something else. Maybe you could come up with an answer if you did some real thinking. If you don't want to think, look at History. Pol Pot and Cambodia is an easy example. The Holocaust is even easier. If you're really stumped or reading is too damn hard, maybe you could ask a cop or an emergency room doc for an answer when they've dealt with a badly beaten toddler. Surely you know a couple - maybe even on friendly terms. Or find a good newspaper reporter and buy 'em a drink.

Or if that sounds like too much work - ask yourself, why the Protestant Irish still hate the Catholic ones and vice versa. Or if that's really hard to do, why, after 150 years, why the US Civil War still lingers, especially in your neck of the woods.

Moslem Values. Right?

Go on, Hemingway. Give it some thought.

#3  Hemingway doesn't do thought. He throws together some salacious text that he thinks we will swallow, hoping to point it out to his progressive friends as an example of how racist and simple-minded we are. He is like that writer who joined the Army and got as far as Kuwait, then wrote purple prose for one of the liberal magazines purporting to show that his comrades in Iraq were vicious simpletons... only it was entirely a figment of his imagination. He was court martialed for it, as I recall, and fired from the magazine as well. I don't remember if his girlfriend was fired as well, though she deserved to be for selling the series to the editor.

#4  Bottom line, my dear Hemingway, you are being red pencilled for bad writing, not being un-PC. You simply don't meet our standads.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Switzerland vows to tighten oversight of funding to Palestinian groups
[IsraelTimes] Lawmakers pass legislation blocking funding to groups involved in anti-Semitic incitement or supporting boycott of Israel.
Clearly these are the end times.
The foreign minister of Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
vowed to tighten his ministry’s oversight of funding for Paleostinian groups after politicians passed critical motions on the subject.

Didier Burkhalter made the promise during a debate in the Swiss Senate on Tuesday after the federal upper house of Switzerland adopted parts of a motion passed by the lower house earlier this week, the RFJ broadcaster reported.

’We are going to take a series of measures" to prevent the use of Swiss funds for activity deemed conducive to the incitement of hatred against Jews and Israel, Burkhalter said. Contracts on cooperation with non-governmental organizations will be revised to contain more explicit stipulations, and review of "political risks" will be reinforced and detailed in a report to the federal government, he added.

The Swiss government will have a more active role in supervising the dispensation of funds on the ground globally "and more particularly in the Middle East, where the risk of abuse is elevated," the minister was quoted as saying.

Whereas Burkhalter acknowledged that the current terms of funding for Paleostinian and some Israeli NGOs needed revision, he emphasized that "Switzerland does not in any way support organizations that incite hatred or anti-Semitism, or organizations associated with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel."

The motion calling for "better oversight on the funding of NGOs in the Middle East" passed by the Senate is a softened version of the motion passed earlier this week in the lower house, RFJ reported. It omitted the explicit reference to the rejection of BDS by Switzerland present in the motion passed by the lower house.

According to NGO Monitor, an Israel-based organization that reviews the funding given to NGOs deemed hostile to the Jewish state and some of the policies of its government, the vote in the lower house was the first time a European country has passed legislation to end funding for NGOs that are vehicles for incitement and hate speech and that specifically include anti-Semitism.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry had in the past refused to review or even disclose information pertaining to its funding of organizations focused on the Paleostinian-Israeli conflict and Israel.

Christian Imark, a lower house politician, proposed the original resolution. Reporting by Dominik Feusi, a journalist from Beisler Zeitung, was pivotal in placing the issue at the forefront of the debate in Switzerland, NGO Monitor said.

On Saturday, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said it had launched an audit of the Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Secretariat, which is the primary funding mechanism for Switzerland, alongside Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands.

The Secretariat disbursed over $14 million to NGOs from 2014 to 2016, with $7.3 million in core funding being distributed to groups involved in BDS campaigns against Israel, according to NGO Monitor.

Specifically, 15 of the 24 core funding recipients and a further 11 out of 20 project grant recipients in this period support BDS, the group said Tuesday in a statement.

US arrests nearly 200 Iraqi immigrants in massive deportation sweep
It's interesting. Even as President Trump's executive orders pausing immigration from key Moslem countries are stymied in the courts, two things have been happening:

1) the number of those choosing to actually coming to the U.S. -- both legally and illegally -- has reportedly fallen to almost nothing, and

2) repatriation deals have suddenly become possible, allowing those we mistakenly accepted to be sent back.

It's almost as if the executive orders were the first steps of a multifaceted negotiation with the endgame of reducing the number of bad guys in our country, rather than a fixed desire that would be either won or lost. Not to mention the probability that many who previously casually misbehaved in the way of their people are suddenly anxious to be seen as upright, law-abiding citizens.
[NYPost] U.S. immigration authorities have tossed in the slammer

’s travel ban, officials said on Wednesday.

In the Detroit area, 114 Iraqi nationals were arrested over the weekend, and 85 throughout the rest of the country over the past several weeks, Gillian Christensen, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman, said in a statement.

The actions came as part of the Trump administration’s push to increase immigration enforcement and make countries, which have resisted in the past, take back nationals ordered deported from the United States.

The crackdown on Iraqi immigrants colonists followed the U.S. government’s decision to drop Iraq from a list of Moslem-majority nations targeted by a revised version of Trump’s temporary travel ban issued in March.

The overwhelming majority of those arrested had criminal convictions for crimes including murder, rape, assault, kidnapping, burglary, drug trafficking, weapons violations and other offenses, Christensen said.

As of April 17, 2017, there were 1,444 Iraqi nationals with final orders for removal, she said. Since the March 12 agreement with Iraq regarding deportees, eight Iraqi nationals have been removed to Iraq.

Dozens of Iraqi Chaldean Catholics in Detroit were among those targeted in the immigration sweeps, some of whom fear they will be killed if deported to their home country, immigration attorneys and family members said.

"It is very worrisome that ICE has signaled its intention to remove Chaldean Christians to Iraq where their safety not only cannot be guaranteed, but where they face persecution and death for their religious beliefs," Martin Manna, president of the Chaldean Community Foundation, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Kurdish Iraqis also were picked up in Nashville, Tennessee, attorneys, activists and family members said.

At least some of those arrested came to the United States as children, got in trouble and already served their sentences, according to immigration attorneys and activists. Some have lived in the United States so long they no longer speak Arabic.

An Iraqi official previously said Iraqi diplomatic and consular missions would coordinate with U.S. authorities to issue travel documents for the deportees.

Front) attacked the villages of Basoufan and Bashmere in the Sherawa area of Afrin.

The radical groups shelled the two villages with dozens of mortar shells, followed by Turkish artillery bombardment on the same villages.

"The shelling led to the destruction of several residential buildings, causing the death and injury of dozens of civilians," a local media activist told ARA News.

Afrin district, also known as Efrîn, is held by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG).

The bombardment was reportedly launched from the nearby Samaan citadel (Saint Simon Citadel), that has been recently taken by Turkey-backed Islamist groups as a base for their operations against the YPG in Aleppo province.

It was not immediately clear how many people were killed in the bombardment. In the meantime, local rescue teams continued to search for victims under the rubble.

Jihadist arrests in Europe nearly double in two years, Europol finds

[IsraelTimes] The number of people arrested in Europe on suspicion of jihadist terror activities nearly doubled over the last two years, Europe’s policing agency says, adding that actual attacks have decreased.

Some 718 were arrested on offences relating to jihadist terror last year as opposed to 395 in 2014, while jihadist attacks dropped from 17 in 2014 to 13 last year — of which six were linked to the Islamic State group, Europol says in a new report.

Isis uses Nutella jars and cat GIFs to lure Westerners: study
7 June
[TheLocal.se] Isis uses Western imagery, Nutella jars and cat GIFs to tempt young people in the West to join its caliphate, a new Swedish study found.

Imagery of violence and weapons alone are not the way to go if you want to attract young Westerners to join Isis. Instead, the violent extremist group pushes its 'Jihadi Cool' subculture to draw in people from the West, according to a group of Swedish researchers who have studied Isis propaganda

The study, titled The Digital Caliphate: A study of propaganda from the Islamic State, was carried out by the Swedish Defence Research Agency (Totalförsvarets forskningsinstitut, FOI).

Italian police bust migrant trafficking ring in Sicily
6 June
[TheLocal.it] The Italian police said on Tuesday that they had broken a smuggling ring between Tunisia and Sicily which was preparing to bring migrants with suspected jihadist links to Europe. The "Scorpionfish" operation had been shadowing the group since January, targeting 15 Italian or Tunisian citizens sought by arrest warrants.

The traffickers carried about 15 migrants paying 2,000 to 3,000 euros each and dozens of kilos of cigarettes, with each crossing generating around 40,000 euros ($45,000).

With summer approaching they were preparing to increase the number of trips to two a week, using speedboats to cross from northeast Tunisia to the Trapani region in western Sicily in about four hours.

The group was apparently willing to bring over people sought by Tunisian authorities for serious crimes or possible links with jihadists, but the police broke up the network before a trip carrying these suspects could be made.

The Tunisian coast guard has struggled to keep up with smuggling gangs using high-performance vessels to ferry people across the Strait of Sicily.

Man who murdered young child in refugee home was ex-convict
6 June
[TheLocal.de] Prosecutors in Regensburg revealed on Monday that an Afghan asylum seeker who stabbed a five-year-old boy to death on Saturday was wearing an ankle monitor at the time.

The man had been convicted of arson by a Munich court in 2009 and sentenced to five years and ten months in jail, the prosecutors revealed. Since then he had been wearing an electronic ankle monitor, which was intended to prevent him leaving the refugee camp in Arnschwang, near the Czech border, where the crime took place.

Munich tried to have the man deported in 2014, but he fought a successful legal case against the expulsion, claiming that he had converted to Christianity and that his life would be in danger in Afghanistan as a result.
Clearly he doesn't understand what being a Christian entails.

Austrian court jails parents who took kids to live under IS
3 June
[TheLocal.at] An Austrian court on Friday sentenced to up to 10 years in jail two couples who took their children to live in an IS-controlled part of Syria and showed them execution videos.

The two men and their wives travelled to Syria with their eight children -- the youngest of whom was two years old -- in December 2014, the trial in the southern city Graz heard.

Defendant Hasan O., 49, denied in court being a member of IS and said that he worked as a masseur treating injured fighters.

"I heard in the mosque (in Graz) that you can live according to Islam there, with freedom for the women and children," he told the trial.

The dream soon went sour, however, and the families fled Syria in April 2016. Turkey then extradited them to Austria and the children were taken into care.

All four -- Hasan O. and his wife Kata O., Enes S. and his wife Michaela S. -- were convicted of belonging to a terrorist organisation and of mistreating and neglecting children. All except Austrian-born Muslim convert Michaela S. were from Bosnia but all had Austrian citizenship.

German parliament passes law ending child marriage
2 June
[TheLocal.de] The German parliament passed a law ending child marriage late on Thursday night, officially raising the marriageable age to 18.

The new law officially makes 18 the minimum age for marriage. Previously, 16-year-olds were allowed to marry adults in certain cases with court permission.

The legislation also nullifies any existing marriages in which at least one spouse was under the age of 16 at the time of the wedding. This is particularly aimed at marriages done outside of Germany.

Courts will also be able to nullify marriages where a spouse was 16 or 17 years old.
