Brussels train station evacuated amid unverified reports of explosions and one man shot as soldiers swoop on city centre
[TheSun] BELGIAN police have reportedly shot a suspect wearing an “explosive belt” at Brussels central train station.

Troops swarmed the city centre terminal after unverified reports of a blast inside before the man was “neutralised”.

Police tweeted to say the "incident involving an individual" was under control and there were no other casualties.

Dozens of police cars could be seen outside the station tonight as passengers are reported to have fled "in panic".

Passengers reported being evacuated from the station and were told to wait in a nearby restaurant.

Broadcaster RTL quoted Fires Services spokesman Pierre Meys confirming that some kind of an explosion had happened in the city's Central station on Tuesday.

Meys could not say what had caused the blast but could only confirm that firefighters were at the scene.

The Belgian capital's Grand Place, a major tourist site filled with restaurants and shops, was evacuated along with the station about 200m (656 feet) away.
Update at 4:55 p.m. EDT:
The suspect was said to be wearing a rucksack packed with explosives around Belgium's busiest railway station.

The attacker was "shot several times" and it appears that "he triggered a device", according to a source.

Police sources said the attacker was seriously injured in the blast, and subsequently died from his wounds.

Nicolas Van Herrewegen, a railway sorting agent, told reporters: "I was behind a wall when it exploded.

"I went down and alerted my colleagues to evacuate everyone. He (the suspect) was still around but after that we didn't see him."

He added: "It wasn't exactly a big explosion but the impact was pretty big. People were running away."

He described the suspect as well-built and tanned with short hair, wearing a white shirt and jeans.

The witness said: "I saw that he had something on him because I could see wires emerging, so it may have been a suicide vest."

Officers have confirmed that no one else was injured or killed in the explosion.
The Telegraph adds:
The Terror Events monitoring website said that multiple witnesses and sources claimed that the perpetrator shouted "Allahu Akhbar".

Armed Russian jet comes within 5 FEET of US aircraft
[FOX] An armed Russian fighter jet buzzed a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft in the Baltic Sea on Monday, two U.S. officials told Fox News.

The Russian Su-27 jet had missiles under its wings and approached the U.S. Air Force RC-135 recon jet "rapidly," coming within five feet of the American aircraft, the officials said.

Once alongside, the Russian jet was "provocative" in its flight maneuvers and flying "erratically," according to another official.

Since June 2nd there have been over 35 interactions in the Baltic Sea region between U.S. and Russian jets and warships, but the incident Monday morning is notable because the U.S. military considered it "unsafe," according to one official.

The incident comes one day after the Russian Defense Ministry said it would treat any U.S. jet flying west of the Euphrates River in Syria as a potential target, following a U.S. Navy jet’s shoot-down of a Syrian jet that was targeting U.S.-aligned fighters.

BREAKING: US F-15 Shoots Down Iranian Drone Over Syria

#1  A U.S. F-15 took down the drone because it was “showing hostile intent” to coalition forces on the ground, according to a U.S. defense official. The Shahed 129 drone was flying in a pattern that would have taken it directly over where U.S. troops were operating at a combat outpost near the Syria-Jordan border to train coalition ground forces in the fight against ISIS, according to a Pentagon press release.

Last drone shot down was two weeks ago and it was Hesbie-owned.

Virginia suspect who allegedly beat Muslim girl to death is an illegal immigrant
[HotAir] Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, appeared in court on Monday to face a murder charge after he got into a dispute with the 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen and a group of her friends in Sterling, North Virginia, the Fairfax County Police Department said.

Martinez got out of the car, assaulted the girl, and beat her with a metal baseball bat, her mother said. Police later found a body believed to be Hassanen's in a Sterling pond about 25 miles outside of Washington DC.

On Monday afternoon it was reported by NBC4: ‘ICE has lodged a detainer against (Torres) meaning they believe he's here illegally.'
Since this kills two of the left's favorite narratives (illegals are your friends; white islamophobia) expect this story to be quickly round filed for all the MSM outlets.

Eric Holder joins the anti-Trump resistance ‐ and mulls a presidential campaign of his own
[Yahoo] LOS ANGELES -- More than two years after leaving the Obama administration, former Attorney General Eric Holder is reentering the political fray.

His goal: to lead the legal resistance to Donald Trump’s agenda -- and perhaps even run against the president in 2020.

Seized by a sense of urgency to oppose Trump and restore what he regards as America’s best self, Holder is mulling a White House bid of his own, according to three sources who have spoken to him and are familiar with his thinking.

"Up to now, I have been more behind-the-scenes," Holder told Yahoo News in an exclusive interview about his plans. "But that’s about to change. I have a certain status as the former attorney general. A certain familiarity as the first African-American attorney general. There’s a justified perception that I’m close to President Obama. So I want to use whatever skills I have, whatever notoriety I have, to be effective in opposing things that are, at the end of the day, just bad for the country.

"Now is the time to be more visible," Holder added. "Now is the time to be heard."

On Monday morning, Holder launched this new phase of his career by traveling to California to speak out.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Another Left-Wing Science Scandal: Round-Up claims shown to be fraudulent
[PowerlineBlog] Glyphosate is the active ingredient in RoundUp, the most widely used herbicide in the world. Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide, meaning it will kill just about any plant. Since it would kill the crop as well as the weeds, for quite a few years it couldn’t be used over the top of an emerging crop. Instead, its use was restricted to lower-value burndown situations, where weeds in a field would be killed prior to planting, or, e.g., to keep down weeds on railroad rights of way.

The first commercially successful genetic modification, carried out by Monsanto, which owned the patents on glyphosate, was to make plants tolerant of glyphosate. A GMO variety, commonly referred to as "RoundUp Ready," would survive a glyphosate application while the weeds in the field would die. The development of glyphosate tolerant crops (soybeans, corn, cotton, eventually others) was a marvel: farmers could apply RoundUp over the top of crops, killing weeds while the crop was unaffected. The result was cheaper food and clothing.

As a bonus, glyphosate was remarkably benign from an environmental standpoint. In general, insecticides are toxic to humans because humans are quite a bit like bugs. Herbicides, on the other hand, are generally not very toxic to humans, because we aren’t a lot like plants. But even in this context, glyphosate stood out as a harmless chemical. It targets an enzyme that is found in plants, but not in humans or animals. Moreover, glyphosate breaks down easily and does not persist in the environment. It is pretty much the perfect herbicide (until resistance starts to develop, but that’s another story).

This sounds like a win-win situation‐cheaper food, better health, longer lifespans‐but some people irrationally hate genetically modified crops, even though the modification‐in this case, making the corn or soybean plant tolerant of glyphosate‐has nothing to do with its nutritional value. After decades of world-wide experience with glyphosate, it was accepted that the product was safe. So it was a bombshell when the International Agency for Research on Cancer declared, in March 2015, that glyphosate is "probably carcinogenic," based on tests on rodents.

Hundreds of cancer patients promptly sued Monsanto, claiming the company had concealed the danger of carcinogenicity, notwithstanding the fact that it would be hard to find a farmer who hadn’t been exposed to glyphosate. The European Union said it would consider IARC’s finding when deciding whether to continue to allow glyphosate to be used in Europe. "Environmentalists" had scored a major coup.

But the whole thing turned out to be a fraud. Reuters has investigated, aided by access to deposition testimony in one or more of the lawsuits against Monsanto, which evidently was not subject to a protective order. Briefly put, the author of the IARC’s carcinogenicity study, Aaron Blair, an epidemiologist from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, covered up his own research showing that exposure to glyphosate did not lead to a higher incidence of cancer in humans. The story, as reported by Reuters, is astonishing:

Previously unreported court documents reviewed by Reuters from an ongoing U.S. legal case against Monsanto show that Blair knew the unpublished research found no evidence of a link between glyphosate and cancer. In a sworn deposition given in March this year in connection with the case, Blair also said the data would have altered IARC’s analysis.

But the data were not considered by IARC because including them would have made the report too long. Or something. You can read the Reuters story, or even this surprisingly sane Mother Jones article, for the details.

It seems obvious that this is another case where left-wing "scientists" concealed data that would have refuted their theory–here, that glyphosate is probably carcinogenic.* Remarkably, despite exposure of the scandal, IARC "stands by its findings." Politics above all.

Given the many scandals that have emerged in recent years, it is reasonable to ask: can liberals be trusted to do science? Unless and until they commit themselves to fundamental reform, something that is not in prospect, my answer is No.

Susan Rice's great unmasking escape: National Security Council records sent to Obama Library
[LI] It seems ages ago, but was just a couple of months ago that controversy swirled around former National Security Advisor Susan Rice’s “unmasking” of names from classified intelligence reports.

We reported on the inconsistencies in Rice’s story on April 3, Susan Rice unmasked? Previously said “I know nothing about” Nunes allegations, and the following day on her interview by Andrea Mitchell, Susan Rice: Sought unmasking but “absolutely not for any political purpose”:

Now there is a new twist. Those White House unmasking records have been removed … to the Obama Library in Chicago, which isn’t even built yet.

This all came known when Judicial Watch sought the records. Judicial Watch’s press release states, in part, that the records not only have been removed, they may be unavailable for 5 years:

Judicial Watch today announced that the National Security Council (NSC) on May 23, 2017, informed it by letter that the materials regarding the unmasking by Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice of “the identities of any U.S. citizens associated with the Trump presidential campaign or transition team” have been removed to the Obama Library.

#3  CONFIRMED: Trump Can Get The Unmasking Records Out of Obama Library

Excerpt: "From the Archives website:

Ҥ 2205. Exceptions to restricted access

(2) subject to any rights, defenses, or privileges which the United States or any agency or person may invoke, Presidential records shall be made available–

(A) pursuant to subpoena or other judicial process issued by a court of competent jurisdiction for the purposes of any civil or criminal investigation or proceeding;

(B) to an incumbent President if such records contain information that is needed for the conduct of current business of the incumbent President’s office and that is not otherwise available; and

(C) to either House of Congress, or, to the extent of matter within its jurisdiction, to any committee or subcommittee thereof if such records contain information that is needed for the conduct of its business and that is not otherwise available; and”

There are a number of ways the Trump administration can choose to get at the records. Importantly, the House Intelligence Committee subpoenas should still bear fruit. Devin Nunes might just have to add the Obama Library and the national Archivist to the subpoena list."

Dems Fear ‘Bitterly Disappointing' Loss In Georgia Special Election
[Daily Caller] Democrats are worried that they could lose the extremely close Georgia special election runoff to replace former Rep. Tom Price.

Party leaders like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi invested time hosting fundraisers and urging others to campaign on behalf of Democratic contender Jon Ossoff, but as Republican contender Karen Handel narrows the gap between the two candidates, party strategists worry that they will lose in Tuesday’s runoff election.

"Just like any sporting event, however unlikely it is that you’re close heading into the fourth quarter, a loss is bitterly disappointing and there will be some feeling of, "when do we get this done if it’s not this race?'" Democratic strategist Dan Kanninen told Politico. "You’ll definitely see some hand-wringing from Democrats wondering when we’re going to get over that hump."

So far, Democratic candidates have lost in Kansas, Montana and the April 18 Georgia special election.

"There’s a lot of anticipation that Democrats could do better than Hillary [Clinton] did, but it remains to be seen if Democrats can turn these so-called red districts into something purple," former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile told Politico.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
U.S. Quietly Admits Covert Klingon 'Regime Change' Role in 1953 Iranian Coup
[Free Beacon] The Trump administration has released a long-suppressed and classified government report disclosing U.S. clandestine action in Iran that outlines America's role in the country's 1953 coup, the State Department announced last week in a move that is likely to roil the Islamic Republic.
Can anyone think of a CIA sponsored 'Regime Change' that ended well ?
The report, which details covert U.S. operations in Iran, has been the source of controversy for quite some time, as the former Obama administration had suppressed its publication in a bid to avoid upsetting Iran during diplomatic efforts to foster the landmark nuclear deal.

While a small portion of the report still remains classified, its release marks the first time the United States is officially acknowledging its clandestine role in the 1953 coup against the Iranian government led by Mohammad Mosadeq.

Multiple efforts to force publication of the documents were blocked by the Obama administration during its time in the White House, and it seemed the report would not see the light of day as late as April of this year.

However, the State Department quietly released the detailed report late last week, potentially in an effort to minimize the fallout.

"There is no known evidence that Secretary of State Tillerson participated in the decision to permit publication," according to the Federation of American Scientists, or FAS which has long been tracking the publication.

The State Department did appear to bury the report's release last week.

Very good at that, "burying the reports.'

#1  In a review of Tim Weiner's Legacy of Ashes, historian Michael Beschloss wrote, "Mr. Weiner argues that a bad C.I.A. track record has encouraged many of our gravest contemporary problems... A generation of Iranians grew up knowing that the C.I.A. had installed the shah," Mr. Weiner notes. "In time, the chaos that the agency had created in the streets of Tehran would return to haunt the United States."

The administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower considered the coup a success, but, given its blowback, that opinion is no longer generally held, because of its "haunting and terrible legacy". In 2000, Madeleine Albright, U.S. Secretary of State, said that intervention by the U.S. in the internal affairs of Iran was a setback for democratic government. The coup is widely believed to have significantly contributed to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which deposed the "pro-Western" Shah and replaced the monarchy with an "anti-Western" Islamic republic.

"For many Iranians, the coup demonstrated duplicity by the United States, which presented itself as a defender of freedom but did not hesitate to use underhanded methods to overthrow a democratically elected government to suit its own economic and strategic interests", the Agence France-Presse reported.

United States Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, who visited Iran both before and after the coup, wrote that "When Mossadegh and Persia started basic reforms, we became alarmed. We united with the British to destroy him; we succeeded; and ever since, our name has not been an honored one in the Middle East."

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Man stabbed to death after bad sammich in Brooklyn apartment building
[Daily News] A threesome in Park Slope spiraled into a deadly attack with bats and knives after one of the participants began filming the sexcapade, police sources said.

The Brooklyn bloodshed left Manos Ikonomidis, 20, dead of three stab wounds in the chest and back. He collapsed on the first floor of a building at 16th St. and Seventh Ave. just after 4 a.m. Monday. Earlier, he’d been locked in a steamy romp with an unidentified woman and 21-year-old Jack Doherty.

"It’s something out of a horror movie," stunned building resident Carol Petersen, 37, said. "It’s horrible. It’s a nightmare."

Doherty was being questioned by police, but was not a suspect in the slaying, sources said.

Deep State Senior Fellow: ‘We Have a Dysfunctional Presidency' at This Moment in Time
[Breitbart] Monday on CNN’s "Situation Room," when asked about the political fight over the Republican health care bill, former CIA Director Leon Panetta called the Donald Trump presidency "dysfunctional."

Panetta said, "This is a moment when, you know, you wonder why there are angry and frustrated people in this country who look to Washington and see very little getting done. And, you know, we have--there’s no question we have a dysfunctional Congress. I think to some extent we have a dysfunctional presidency as well at this moment in time. And I think everything, everything that can be done to try to put pressure on both Republicans and Democrats to work together to try to resolve these key issues, particularly on health care, is something that ought to be done now."

"I know the Democrats have to fight the Republicans," he continued. "I know the Republicans are doing their thing to try to keep this within the party. But I really think that both parties need to look at the larger picture here, which is that literally, the United States of America will be affected by what they do, and they can’t do this in secret, and they can’t do this simply by fighting each other over these kinds of issues. They have to learn to work together to do what is right for our country."

#18  "you may discard those words"

The wilful omission of rhetorical qualifiers (paticularly in a headline) reveals the editors agenda to intentionally mislead. Pannetta expresses uncertainty in both degree and duration. The edited headline subtlety insinuates declaritive certainty.

"...and what are their arguments?"

One example of dysfunction would be the conflicting information regarding health care legislation between the President and his staff.

Soros, Clinton-Linked Teneo Among Donors to McCain Institute
The mask has fallen to the floor.
Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain in 2012 turned over nearly $9 million in unspent funds from his failed 2008 presidential campaign to a new foundation bearing his name, the McCain Institute for International Leadership.

The institute is intended to serve as a "legacy" for McCain and "is dedicated to advancing human rights, dignity, democracy and freedom." It is a tax-exempt non-profit foundation with assets valued at $8.1 million and associated with Arizona State University.

Conservative and liberal critics, however, believe the institute constitutes a major conflict of interest for McCain, The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group has learned.

McCain, a former Navy pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam in 1967 and was then a prisoner of war in the infamous Hanoi Hilton until 1973, is a major political force in Washington, D.C. He is presently chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services.

Critics worry that the institute’s donors and McCain’s personal leadership in the organization’s exclusive "Sedona Forum" bear an uncanny resemblance to the glitzy Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) that annually co-mingled special interests and powerful political players in alleged pay-to-play schemes.

The institute has accepted contributions of as much as $100,000 from billionaire liberal activist-funder George Soros and from Teneo, a for-profit company co-founded by Doug Band, former President Bill Clinton’s "bag man." Teneo has long helped enrich Clinton through lucrative speaking and business deals.

And Bloomberg reported in 2016 on a $1 million Saudi Arabian donation to the institute, a contribution the McCain group has refused to explain publicly.

In addition, the institute has taken at least $100,000 from a Moroccan state-run company tied to repeated charges of worker abuse and exploitation. The McCain group has also accepted at least $100,000 from the Pivotal Foundation, which was created by Francis Najafi who owns the Pivotal Group, a private equity and real estate firm.

The Pivotal Foundation has in the last three years given $205,000 to the National Iranian-American Council (NIAC), which has been a vocal advocate for the Iranian nuclear deal the Obama administration negotiated.

The NIAC web site claims the group "is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the voice of Iranian Americans and promoting greater understanding between the American and Iranian people."

But NIAC President Trita Parsi has long been an advocate for Iran, including demanding in May 2017 that President Donald Trump and officials in his administration "cease questioning the integrity of a (nuclear) deal."

The NIAC is "Iran’s lobbyists in Washington," charged Aresh Salih, the Washington representative of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan. "People inside of Iran know them as their lobbyists in Washington, D.C.," Salih told TheDCNF.

The NIAC does not file as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, nor does it register as a lobbyist with Congress.

Yet in May 2013, Parsi spoke to a packed Capitol Hill meeting sponsored by Minnesota Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison to argue in favor of the nuclear deal. Ellison was the first Muslim elected to Congress and is also deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee.

"This is a very real conflict of interest," Craig Holman, a government affairs lobbyist at Public Citizen, told TheDCNF. "This is the similar type of pattern we received with the Clinton Foundation in which foreign governments and foreign interests were throwing a lot of money in the hopes of trying to buy influence."

Liberal consumer advocate Ralph Nader founded Public Citizen.

Lawrence Noble, general counsel for the Campaign Legal Center, told the DCNF that accepting contributions in the name of a sitting senator like McCain raises troubling issues.

"In terms of the ethics of it, it does raise a broad question of people trying to get good will with the elected official," he said. "From a personal standpoint, I’d rather not see these entities exist."

Charles Ortel, a retired Wall Street investment banker and philanthropy law expert, told TheDCNF that "high government officials such as John McCain, [former Secretary of State] Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama should not get involved with vehicles like these where substantial sums can be funneled over time in ways that at best, wreak of impropriety and at worse are public corruption."

The institute’s donations not only suggest special pleading before the senator, but also in some instances appear to contradict McCain’s vision of human rights and national security.

It accepted more than $100,000 from OCP, S.A., a Moroccan state-owned phosphate company operating in the Western Sahara, territory which Morocco seized in 1975. The North African country has since occupied the region by force in defiance of U.N. resolutions and legal declarations by other international bodies.

Morocco has come under criticism from human rights groups that the government violates basic human rights and that its state-owned companies subject its workforce to gruesome conditions while exploiting the disputed territory’s natural resources.

The Western Sahara holds half of the world’s phosphate reserves. Used to make fertilizer, phosphate is called Morocco’s "white gold."

Last week, a South African court ruled in favor of the seizure of an OCP ship charged with illegally carrying 50,000 tons of phosphate from the Western Sahara. The country’s independence movement, which calls the territory the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, succeeded in convincing the court to keep the ship in port until the case is resolved.
Little "convincing" required. The bribery and bidding wars hadn't even begun.
The King of Morocco was a major donor to the Clinton Foundation. Hillary Clinton personally accepted $12 million from the King in return for holding a CGI regional meeting in the country.

OCP also was a major sponsor of the CGI meeting, and Bill Clinton was the featured speaker.

The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice has charged OCP with "serious human rights violations," including exploitation of workers by not "adequately compensating the impoverished people who live there."

McCain has lavished effusive praise on the King of Morocco, saying in 2011, that the country was a "positive example to governments across the Middle East and North Africa."

McCain and Soros reportedly became friends after the senator was exposed as a member of the "Keating Five" during the savings and loan (S&L) industry scandal during former President George H.W. Bush’s administration. As the S&L bank chairman, Charles Keating paid $1.3 million to bribe five members of Congress to interfere with government regulators on behalf of the savings bank.

The experience so scarred McCain that he became a vigorous advocate of campaign finance reform and in the process reportedly became friends with Soros.

McCain recently claimed no involvement with the institute, saying "I’m proud that the institute is named after me, but I have nothing to do with it."

The institute did not respond to requests for the dollar amounts of its high donors, when the donations were made and if there were strings attached to the contributions, claiming it did not have any of the information. Late Monday, the institute’s spokesman referred The DCNF to Arizona State University.

Hasm militant group claims responsibility for Maadi police checkpoint attack
More on this report from yesterday.
[AlAhram] The group linked the attack to the Egypt-Saudi maritime border demarcation agreement, which recognizes two Red Sea islands as being Soddy Arabian territory.

The hard boy group Hasm has grabbed credit for an attack on a police checkpoint in Maadi, North Cairo, late on Saturday in which a policeman was killed and four others injured.

In a statement published on Sunday on its official social media accounts and website, the hard boy group claimed the attack, linking it to an Egypt-Saudi maritime border demarcation agreement that places two Red Sea islands within Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
n territory.

The Hasm statement said the checkpoint attack was "retaliation" for the Egyptian state's "attack on protesters and citizens" who reject the "sale of the land", referring to the islands of Tiran and Sanafir.

On Wednesday, the Egyptian parliament approved the border demarcation agreement, which recognizes Tiran and Sanafir as Saudi sovereign territory. The deal is now awaiting the ratification of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi before being implemented.

Hasm has claimed a number of attacks against Egyptian security forces personnel, mostly stationed at checkpoints. Several public figures, such as former grand mufti Sheikh Ali Gomaa, have also been targetted.

Egyptian security bodies say that dozens of Hasm members have been placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
in the past few months. According to interior ministry officials, the group is linked to the Moslem Brüderbund organization. Both groups are designated as terrorist organizations in Egypt.

Man with axe and knives arrested near Kidderminster TA base
[BBC] Anti-terror police have arrested a man with knives and an axe near an Army Reserve centre (formerly known as TA).

West Midlands Police Counter Terrorism Unit and officers from the West Mercia force held the 23-year-old by the Kidderminster centre on Sunday night.

Officers said there was nothing to indicate a threat to the premises on Birmingham Road or any link to the terror attack in Finsbury Park, London.

The man's motives are not yet known and he remains in custody, police said.

Asst Ch Con Martin Evans, of West Mercia Police, said: "On identifying the man our officers took prompt action to contain the threat and take him into custody.

"I understand that this will be extremely concerning for the residents of Kidderminster but I would like to reassure you that at this time we believe the suspect was acting alone and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."

He said an "extremely sensitive investigation" was under way and confirmed additional police patrols would take place in the town to reassure people.

Iraqi PM Abadi arrives in Saudi Arabia for talks
[Iran Press TV] Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has arrived in Saudi Arabia to hold talks with King Salman on key regional developments as well as bilateral ties.

Abadi arrived in the Red Sea city of Jeddah on Monday and was greeted by Mohammed bin Nayef, Saudi deputy prime minister and the minister of interior.

State media said that Abadi’s visit would last for one day.

Abadi came to office in September 2014 on promises of establishing friendly relations with major powers in the Middle East. Compared to his predecessor Nouri al-Maliki, he has been less critical of Saudi Arabia’s role in militancy that has plagued the region, including Iraq, for the past years. However, Abadi has argued that Riyadh should do more to help countries like Iraq to defeat terrorists.

Abadi’s visit comes nearly four months after Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir visited Baghdad for talks in first such trip since 2003.

Maute militants use drones to evade Philippine troops
[GMA News] While Philippine troops use drones to gather information about the terrorists in Marawi, Maute militants are also using drones to escape the military offensive in the beleaguered city.

A report on 24 Oras showed a video of what sounded like Maute rebels launching a drone while chanting "Allahu Akbar" before its deployment to the frontline.

Military spokesperson Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera said the military first saw the Maute drones during the first week of clashes in the city.

Meanwhile, the report said soldiers on the frontline have been complaining of the foul smell of decomposing corpses belonging to the Maute group. Stray dogs were also seen carrying human remains for food.

Clearing operations in Marawi City are still ongoing with several Maute militants hiding in fortified basements. The report said soldiers are using tear gas to extricate Maute rebels hiding in civilian houses.

CAR government signs peace deal with rebel groups
[Al Jazeera] The government of the Central African Republic (CAR) has signed an "immediate ceasefire" deal with rebel groups at a meeting in Italia's capital, Rome, aimed at ending violence in the strife-torn country.

Under Monday's accord, gangs will be given representation in the political arena in exchange for an end to attacks and blockades, and their members will be brought into the country's armed forces.

"We commit to the immediate implementation by political-military groups of a country-wide ceasefire, to be monitored by the international community, as a fundamental step on the way to definitive peace," the deal read.

"The government undertakes to ensure military groups are represented at all levels" and are "recognised as part of the reconstruction efforts", it said.

The rebel groups pledged to ensure "the free movement of people and goods by removing illegal barriers as an immediate consequence of the ceasefire".

Iran denies Saudi claim of Revolutionary Guards' arrest
[Al Jazeera] Iran has denied claims by Soddy Arabia

aboard an explosive-laden boat near an oil platform in the Gulf.

Majid Aghababaie, head of border affairs at Iran's interior ministry, said the three people detained were fishermen from the southern Iranian port of Bushehr.

"There is no proof that they are military personnel," he said, in remarks carried by the ILNA news agency.

Earlier on Monday, Saudi Arabia's information and culture ministry said the three people "are now being questioned by Saudi authorities".

"It is clear this was intended to be a terrorist act in Saudi territorial waters designed to cause severe damage to people and property," the ministry said.

The latest incident comes at a time of already heightened tensions between the two rival regional powers.

On Sunday, Saudi Arabia said it had seized weapons from a boat captured in the Gulf's Marjan field at about 8:30pm (17:30 GMT) on Friday.

It said the navy fired warning shots when three small boats entered Saudi territorial waters and headed at high speed towards the platforms.

That statement made no mention of explosives and did not detail what type of weapons were found, though it said they were for "subversive purposes".

It also made no mention of arrests but said the boats bore "red and white flags".

Two of the boats got away, the statement said.

On Saturday, Iran accused the Saudi coastguard of killing one of its fishermen after two fishing boats may have strayed into Saudi waters.

Some officials of the IRGC have also claimed that Saudi Arabia had a hand in attacks in Tehran earlier in June.

The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
’s naval forces say they have detained and are currently questioning three men believed to be Iranian Revolutionary Guards after their armed boat attempted to breach their territorial waters on Friday.

An official source stated that at 20:28 on June 16, three small boats, bearing red and white flags, entered the Saudi territorial waters in the Arabian Gulf. Saudi navy forces were able to capture one boat while the other two escaped.

"They headed at speed towards platforms of Saudi oil field of Marjan. Immediately, the Saudi naval forces fired warning shots, but the boats did not respond. Consequently, one of the boats was captured which was loaded with weapons for subversive purpose, while the other two escaped," a statement on Saudi Press Agency read.

A statement released by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Informational and Culture quoted a navy source as saying that the attack was apparently carried as a terrorist operation aimed at causing serious damage to life and property.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia stresses its determination to combat and eradicate terrorism and its sources, as a part of the country’s permanent objective to protect its national security against any external aggression," the statement added.

Five female suicide bombers killed 16 in double attack in Nigeria
[AlAhram] At least 16 people died in a double suicide kaboom near a large camp for people made homeless by years of Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
violence, Nigeria's emergency services and locals said Monday.

The bombing was one of a series of attacks in the conflict-hit region on Sunday which killed a total of 24 people, most of them civilians.

In the attack, which took place on Sunday evening, two women blew themselves up in Kofa village which houses a large camp for those displaced by Boko Haram violence, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.

"They killed 16 people," said regional NEMA front man Abdulkadir Ibrahim. Kofa lies about 15 kilometres (nine miles) southeast of Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

Local residents gave an initial toll of 12 or 13 dead but the front man said three of the maimed had shuffled off the mortal coil in hospital.

At around the same time, two more kabooms occurred inside the nearby Dalori 2 camp which is home to some 10,000 people, he said, indicating it was caused by another two female bombers.

Several people were maimed but only the attackers died, he said, without saying how many were hurt.

Dalori is home to two camps which together provide shelter for some 50,000 people displaced by the violence between Boko Haram and the Nigerian army. It is one of the largest camps for internally displaced people (IDP) in this remote region.

Drunk farmer ‘starts fight with his own pig but dies after having three fingers and his privates bitten off'
A FARMER has died after he brawled with a pig that bit him in the testicles and tore off three of his fingers, it has been reported.

The bizarre incident is said to have occurred in the town of San Lucas Ojitlan, in south-western Mexico.

El Debate reported that farmer Miguel Anaya Pablo, 60, died from an infection caused by the wounds he suffered during the brawl.

Miguel is alleged to have returned home drunk from a party and somehow begun fighting with the pig which he kept in his home.

The animal managed to bite his testicles and severe three fingers of his right hand, the paper claimed, and he was rushed to hospital.

However, he later died due to an infection in the wounds and his body is due to undergo an autopsy, local media reported.

Although the incident has been widely reported in local media, the details have not been independently verified and no news sites ran an image of Miguel.

Remarks by US secretary of state against UN Charter: Iran’s UN envoy
[Iran Press TV] Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
says US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s recent anti-Tehran remarks are in violation of international laws and norms and against the Charter of the United Nations.

Gholam-Ali Khoshrou made the remarks on Sunday in a letter of condemnation to United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Tillerson told the House Foreign Relations Committee on June 14 that the Iranian government "continues activities and interventions that destabilize the Middle East." He added that Washington’s policy towards Iran was based on supporting internal forces who could bring about peaceful change.

"Our policy towards Iran is to push back on this hegemony, contain their ability to develop obviously nuclear weapons, and to work toward support of those elements inside of Iran that would lead to a peaceful transition of that government. Those elements are there, certainly as we know," he said.

In his letter, Khoshrou stressed that Tillerson’s remarks were a flagrant violation of the international legislation that directly apposed the UN’s Charter, which mandates countries from interfering in each other’s internal affairs.

"Tehran expects all governments to condemn such absurd and inappropriate policies, and to call on the US to act responsibly in accordance with the UN’s charter and international law," Khoshrou said.

Iran summons Swiss envoy over 'meddlesome' US remarks
[Iran Press TV] Iran has summoned the Swiss charge d’affaires to Tehran to protest at the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s recent "meddlesome" remarks against the Islamic Theocratic Republic, the Iranian Foreign Ministry front man says.

In a meeting on Monday, the director general for the Americas at Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Mohammad Keshavarz-Zadeh, handed over a strongly-worded official letter of protest to the Swiss envoy, who represents the US interests in Tehran, Bahram Qassemi said.

He added that Keshavarz-Zadeh denounced the US secretary of state’s "injudicious" remarks and described them as "clear intervention in Iran’s internal affairs."

Qassemi said the Iranian official had emphasized that Tillerson’s remarks were against the principles of international law and the international commitments of the US administration, including the United Nations

Charter.

Keshavarz-Zadeh noted that the US administration was responsible for such comments and must be held accountable in this regard.

EU cautions Iraqi Kurds against holding independence vote
[Iran Press TV] The European Union has cautioned political parties in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region against holding an independence referendum in September.

The EU foreign ministers said in a statement on Monday that "unilateral steps must be avoided, and that all open questions must be resolved through consensual positions" based on Iraq's constitution.

The union also called on all Kurdish parties in Iraq's northern region to "seek common ground" and consider holding regional elections.

In April, the representatives of the two main Kurdish parties of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) discussed the issue of a separation referendum and decided to hold the vote this year.

Masoud Barzani, the president of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), announced on June 7 that the vote would be held on September 25 in the three governorates that make up the Kurdish region and in the areas that are disputed by the Kurdish and Iraqi governments, including the disputed northern city of Kirkuk, Khanaqin, Sinjar and Makhmur.

The plebiscite has on several occasions been criticized by the central government in Baghdad.

Barzani has repeatedly called for a secession vote, but Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has stressed the need for preserving the country’s territorial integrity.

The premier has also called on the Iraqi Kurdistan to scrap any plans for independence, arguing that the autonomous region could not do without the mainland.

Russia threatens to target coalition planes in Syria
[Al Jazeera] Russia has said that it will treat all US-led coalition aircraft to the west of the Euphrates River in Syria as "targets" and halted an incident-prevention hotline with Washington after US forces downed a Syrian warplane.

Moscow has only once before suspended the hotline, which was established in October 2015 to prevent conflict between the different forces operating in Syrian airspace.

Sunday’s downing of the jet and Russia's response on Monday further complicate Syria's six-year war and come as the US-led coalition and allied fighters battle to remove the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS, also known as ISIS) group from its Syrian bastion, Raqqa.

Russia's foreign ministry accused Washington of failing to use the hotline before downing the plane near Raqqa and called for a "careful investigation by the US command" into the incident.

"Any flying objects, including planes and drones of the international coalition, discovered west of the Euphrates River will be tracked as aerial targets by Russia's air defences on and above ground," it warned.

Russia's defence ministry condemned the downing of the jet in a separate statement, saying the latest incident, in addition to others, was a violation of international law.

"As a result of the strike, the Syrian plane was destroyed. The Syrian pilot catapulted into an area controlled by Islamic State [of Iraq and the Levant] terrorists. His fate is unknown," the statement said.

Terrorist ringleader killed in clashes with IRGC in SE Iran
[Iran Press TV] The ringleader of a terrorist group has been killed in festivities with Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan-and-Baluchestan, a provincial security official says.

Sistan-and-Baluchestan Province's deputy governor for security affairs, Ali Asghar Mir-Shekari, said on Monday that Molavi Jalil Ghanbar Zehi, the ringleader of the so-called Ansar al-Furqan group, had been killed during the recent festivities with the IRGC’s Qods Headquarters in Qasr-e Qand Heights.

He added that the body of this "international terrorist" along with four of his deputies and elements is now in the hands of the IRGC Ground Forces.

The official noted that Iranian security officials had been conducting measures over the past 25 years to arrest this terrorist due to his numerous crimes committed in the southeastern Iranian border areas.

Commander of IRGC’s Ground Force Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour told Fars news agency on Sunday that IRGC forces had managed to kill all members of the Takfiri

terrorist outfit and completely dismantle it after the start of the operation in the town of Qasr-e Qand on Thursday.

He added that the identity of the gunnies had not been determined yet, adding, "The gunnies were members of the Ansar al-Furqan group and their identities are under investigation."

126 refugees feared dead after shipwreck off Libya
[Al Jazeera] At least 126 refugees are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea after the motor of their boat was stolen, causing it to sink, the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
' migration agency has said.

According to testimony from four survivors brought to Italia, the refugees - mainly Sudanese - left on Thursday from Libya trying to make the dangerous crossing to Europe, Flavio Di Giacomo, front man for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Monday.

The men said that after a few hours at sea a group of Libyan traffickers intercepted their boat, he added.

"They stole the motor - something which has happened a few times recently - and at that point, the boat started to take on water and sank."

Rescued by fishermen
Passing Libyan fishermen rescued the four survivors - two Sudanese and two Nigerian men, and put them on another boat with about 1,000 other refugees. They were eventually rescued and brought to the Sicilian port of Palermo.

"They were in shock, traumatised by what had happened, and exhausted," Di Giacomo said, adding that there were no official witnesses to what had happened, but refugees from the second boat had confirmed the account.

Gangs in Libya have built a lucrative trade out of packing refugees into rickety boats heading for Italia, where more than 65,000 have arrived so far this year.

As of June 14, 1,828 people are believed to have died trying to reach Europe, according to IOM figures.

As a pickup truck carrying ten army soldiers was on a road in Thung Yang Daeng district, an underground bomb went off, completely destroying it. A combined security team checked the scene in the afternoon. They found pieces of the pickup truck within a 50m radius of the blast. The impact created a 1.5m-deep and 2m-wide hole on the laterite road with body parts scattered everywhere. Officials said it was one of the bloodiest incidents in the southern province.

The soldiers had been sent to replace another team who had patrolled the woods and hills. The mission was to put pressure on the rebels who might have hidden there.

Arabia
Our war is on terrorism, not on Qatar
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] We are not at war with Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
but at war with terrorism. This message must be the slogan of the countries, which boycotted Qatar. "The frontline of the war on terror" is a phrase that must always be used to remind of the major aim which Qatar is trying to divert people’s attention from by coming up with other headlines such as siege, starvation, subjugation and others.

The second plan is "to internationalize our goals" and not just limit them to our local front. This is a strategic orientation that requires different activity that’s directed to the international public opinion and not just to the decision makers.

Unfortunately, Qatar insists to bury its head in the sand as it thinks the time it will gain will be in its favor. However,
the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach...
Qatar does not have a winning card and its only bet is to try and gain time. Its only hope to survive is to disintegrate "the front of the war on terror" locally and internationally and divert the world’s attention from our goal which is war on terror and make everyone think that there is a war against its people and economy.

It is inspired by the Israeli model as it internationally markets the crisis by claiming it is a moderately religious country that’s surrounded by krazed killer religious countries. It is marketing itself as a small state that is surrounded by big countries and as an oasis for safety among countries suffering from unrest. It wants the world to think that it was targeted for these reasons to divert attention from what is really happening.

Buying time
Meanwhile,
...back at the wine tasting, Vince was about to start on his third quart...
Qatar’s reaction clearly shows that it has not yet understood the size of Gulf and international changes. It is betting on time while hoping that these changes are not permanent. Doha is not aware that time is not on its side as long as leads on terrorism eventually reveal that Qatar either financed hard boyz or embraced them.

In the end, Qatar will not only be targeted by Gulf countries but it will also be targeted internationally and in that case, it will have no choice but to submit to international will.

All we have to do is clarify these ties to the international community. This is what we must focus on while "addressing the international community." We must not allow Qatar to address the latter on its own via more misleading campaigns.

Qatar’s rhetoric while addressing the international community is confusing when it talks about its relations with armed organizations. There are recordings and footage that document these ties. These armed organizations have begun to get out of control and to target Europe via "lone wolves."

This latter term is used to describe individuals whom armed organizations recruit from afar. The international community cannot be lenient with any party that has anything to do with these attacks against it.

This is where Qatar gets confused as it cannot confront these facts. Qatar must respond to the recent developments, however, so far it has limited its activity to working internally to strengthen the local front and mobilize Qatari support. It adopted the mechanism of "fear" and relied on the sympathy of some Arabs, and exploited this to play the victim.

Confused rhetoric
However,
the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach...
it’s clear that Qatar’s rhetoric is confused on the international level. This was seen during the interview of Hamad bin Jassem ‐ the maestro of Qatari foreign policy over the course of 20 years ‐ with Charlie Rose. The interview did not match the seriousness of recent developments and their repercussions on Qatar and the region.

Some television channels and writers stand by Qatar because they adhere to its role in the plan to re-divide the region and not because they love it or believe it is innocent. This support though did not put an end to the repercussions affecting the Qatari command. What if we address the European and American public opinion and if the "front of war on terror" supply it with information and data that link the attacks on Europe to organizations which Qatar supports?

Qatar bets on time and on those who despise the Saudi kingdom to reshuffle the deck. It cannot defend itself but is working on making Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
defend itself. Qatar is working to turn the attack against it into an attack against Saudi Arabia and it is doing so by exploiting the agendas and internal conflicts of some parties.

Doha is also using the media outlets which do not like US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and favors the former American policy and which for years criticized Saudi Arabia and promoted Iran. This is how Qatar is reshuffling the deck.

Our task then is to address the international public opinion and reorganize the situation so the world realizes that supporting the Qatari command is not tantamount to a protest against Saudi Arabia but is tantamount to playing with fire. Leniency with Qatar means leniency with terrorism. This is the message, which must be conveyed.

Afghan spy chief rejects existence of 5th pillar in govt and its role in recent violence
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Afghan Intelligence, National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) Chief, Masoom Stanikzai rejected the allegations regarding the existence of the 5th pillar in the government having role in the recent violence in the country.

Speaking to politicians in the Upper House of the Parliament, Meshrano Jirga, Stanikzai said the term ’5th pillar’ is a rumor spread by the political circles and such a thing or circle does not exist in the government.

Stanikzai further added that the existence of the 5th or 6th pillar is baseless and it is only the rumors being spread due to the political rivalries.

The NDS chief also rejected that the current system is facing threats of collapse but warned that inappropriate remarks and spread of rumors could take the country towards a crisis.

Stanikzia was summoned by the politicians due to the persistent security and political issues faced by the country, particularly in capital Kabul where sit-ins by certain protesters continue demanding the removal of the top security officials from the government.

The protests organized in capital Kabul in reaction to the May 31st bombing turned violent, leaving several dead or maimed but the tensions between the protesters and the government heightened after a series of bombings struck a funeral ceremony in Kabul with the supporters of the demonstration, specifically the Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. , that have severed economic and travel relations with Doha until the blockade on the Persian Gulf nation is lifted.

Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani made the remarks in a presser in capital Doha on Monday, saying "Qatar is under blockade, there is no negotiation. They have to lift the blockade to start negotiations."

"Until now we didn't see any progress about lifting the blockade, which is the precondition for anything to move forward," Sheikh Mohammed further said, adding that ending the embargoes, which are acts of "aggression", is a "pre-condition" for negotiations.

His comments came a few hours after his counterpart from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Anwar Gargash, stated that Arab monarchies of the Persian Gulf region could continue to isolate Qatar "for years" if Doha did not alter its foreign policy.

As far as can be told, they didn't. With the typical brilliant bureaucrat logic, it apparently was decided to fix the problem by reinforcing the flight deck, use heat resistant concrete in runways, et. al..

Syrian pilot found alive after US downed plane over Raqqah
[Iran Press TV] The pilot of Syrian fighter plane recently shot down by the US-led coalition has been found in the countryside of Raqqah.

According to Sputnik, Captain Ali fahd was found alive and well by Syrian troops in the village of Shuwaihat in southern Raqqah on Monday.

The pilot had landed close to the village after successfully parachuting from his Sukhoi Su-22 aircraft, which was shot down on Sunday. After the Syrian army announced that one of its planes had been shot down, the US claimed that it had targeted the plane "in collective self-defense of coalition-partnered forces" in Syria’s Tabqa.

Yemeni (Hadi-loyalist) army controls mountain summit between al-Jawf and Amran
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Yemeni army took control of Jabal Ham, the border between the provinces of al-Jawf and Amran, where the soldiers of the Sixth Military Region are clashing to control the ruling areas.

The militias were entrenched at the foot of Mount Ham after the National Army took control of its summit, causing the Houthi’s to suffer setbacks.

The commander of the 122nd Brigade said in an exclusive interview that the militias are killing the injured elements so as not to care for them.

The Battle of al-Jawf can be described as a battle for control of the summits and ruling point.

Otto Warmbier dead; former US prisoner of North Korea was 22
[Fox] Otto Warmbier, the American student who was detained and held in North Korea before being returned back to the U.S. earlier this month, has died, according to his family. He was 22 years old.

News of Warmbier’s death follows reports from doctors that he had suffered extensive brain damage and was unresponsive to his surroundings. Officials from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, which treated the student upon his return, labeled his condition as a "state of unresponsive wakefulness."

The NKors (or their Chinese/Russian/Iranian Doctors) realized that the kid was going to die from whatever they did to him and didn't want it to happen while he was still in North Korea.

They also wanted to make sure that he would never regain consciousness and relate what actually happened to him so took steps to ensure that.

They'll still try to make it seem that sending him home was some sort of 'Grand Gesture', though.

PM rejects WSJ report Israel gives financial aid to Syrian rebels
IsraelTimes] ’We do not interfere in this terrible conflict,’ says Netanyahu; only humanitarian assistance provided.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday rejected a Wall Street Journal report claiming Israel provides financial aid to rebel groups in Syria.

"We do not interfere in this terribly bloody conflict. We do, however, provide humanitarian aid to young boys and girls," Netanyahu said. "It is expensive, but we will continue to invest."

Netanyahu was speaking on a visit to Ziv Medical Center in Safed, where a new radiotherapy department was opened Monday. Ziv has treated hundreds of victims of the Syrian civil war, and many more have been treated at a field hospital the IDF maintains at the Syrian border.

The prime minister said that more than a thousand Syrian men, women and kiddies had been treated at Ziv. "They once saw us as enemies," he said of these patients, "but here they realize more than ever that Israel is a moral bastion and a beacon of light in the region," where "all are treated equally," irrespective of their religion and origin.

Citing interviews with half a dozen rebel leaders and three persons familiar Israel’s undeclared policy, the Sunday report in the Journal claimed that Israel set up a special military unit in 2016 to oversee and coordinate the transfer of financial aid -- valued at some $5,000 per month -- to rebel forces opposed to the regime of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...
and his Iranian, Lebanese and Russian allies.

This "secret engagement," the report said, is aimed to help ensure that forces friendly to Israel control the Syrian side of the northern Golan border. The aid, said the Journal, helps the groups pay salaries and buy weapons and ammunition.

Israel has largely stayed out of the Syrian civil war, which broke out in March 2011, but has over the years acknowledged that it helps treat maimed Syrians who arrive at its border, and provides some of them with humanitarian assistance. It has also claimed a number of Arclight airstrikes in Syria it says were meant to prevent arch-foe Hezbollah from acquiring advanced weaponry from Iran via Damascus. Netanyahu has repeatedly confirmed that Israel was actively working to disrupt Hezbollah’s arms smuggling operations in Syria and build-up of capabilities on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

In response to the Wall Street Journal report, the IDF said Israel was "committed to securing the borders of Israel and preventing the establishment of terror cells and hostile forces... in addition to providing humanitarian aid to the Syrians living in the area."

The rebel group Fursan al-Joulan has approximately 400 fighters in Quneitra province in the Syrian Golan Heights and is allied with at least four other rebel groups, who also receive Israeli assistance, the fighters told the newspaper. They added that roughly 800 rebel fighters in a dozen villages in the area rely on support from Israel, as do some of the thousands of civilians living there.

"Israel stood by our side in a heroic way," a front man for Fursan al-Joulan, or Knights of the Golan, Moatasem al-Golani, told the Journal. "We wouldn’t have survived without Israel’s assistance."

A separate May report from the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) of peacekeepers stated that "there has been a significant increase in interaction between Israel Defense Forces soldiers and individuals from the Bravo (Syrian) side."

The UN report went on to cite 16 interactions between the IDF and unknown officials on the Syrian side of the border.

Israeli regime begins reducing electricity supply to besieged Gaza Strip
[Iran Press TV] The Israeli regime has begun reducing electricity supplies to the besieged Gazoo Strip, a week after Tel Aviv announced its much-condemned decision to further pressure the impoverished Paleostinian sliver.

The Gazoo Energy Authority announced the news in a statement on Monday, adding that Israeli authorities "began to reduce by eight megawatts electricity flow" into the Paleostinian enclave. It also warned that the "dangerous" reduction would have "serious effects" on the crisis-hit territory.

It further said that the cutback was expected to reduce the amount of the mains electricity supplied to the blockaded sliver by at least 45 minutes of the daily average of four hours of power that Gazoo's nearly 2 million inhabitants receive from an Israeli power plant, which provides them with some 125 MW a month, or 30 percent of the total mains electricity needs of the enclave.

On June 11, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet gave the state-owned Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) the green light to implement the controversial cut, a step that is expected to further deteriorate the power crunch plaguing the Paleostinian seaside territory, run by the Paleostinian Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", movement.

Israel’s decision was reportedly made after the West Bank-based Paleostinian Authority (PA), led by President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, slashed its monthly payments for the power supplies to Gazoo by 30 percent. The PA and Hamas are at loggerheads, and Abbas' decision is then considered as indirect pressure on Hamas to relinquish control of the enclave.
Burying the lead. According to The Times of Israel:
In April the PA told Israel that it would begin to pay only NIS 25 million ($7 million) of the NIS 40 million ($11 million) it has been paying monthly for power to Gazoo. Israel at the time supplied 125 megawatt-hours to Gazoo, around 30 percent of what is needed to power Gazoo for 24 hours a day.

The power cuts, as well as a number of other steps taken by the PA since last month, are aimed by the PA of President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
at forcing Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, to cede control of the Strip, or begin footing the bill itself. Hamas seized control of Gazoo from Abbas’s Fatah party in a violent 2007 takeover.

The PA’s new strategy to squeeze Hamas out of power, which also includes cutting government salaries to Gazooks and a massive reduction in medical aid supplied to the Strip, coincides with the 10-year anniversary of Hamas’s violent takeover of Gazoo.

Europe
Controversial documentary on European anti-Semitism finally to air this week
Sunshine is the best disinfectant.
[IsraelTimes] Film set for Wednesday night broadcast; producers call talk show set to analyze it immediately afterward a ’tribunal'.

Germany’s Channel 1 has announced it will broadcast a documentary on anti-Semitism in Europe that has become the subject of unwanted controversy over the last five months.

The film will air on Wednesday, June 21, at 10:15 p.m. (CET).

The announcement comes after a heated public debate about the refusal to show the film which led the German mass-circulation Bild news outlet to leak the documentary illegally last Tuesday, The Times of Israel reported.

Titled "Chosen and Excluded ‐ Jew Hatred in Europe," the documentary by Joachim Schröder and Sophie Hafner was commissioned and approved by the German public broadcaster WDR on behalf of its Franco-German partner channel Arte. Arte, however, refused to show the documentary, accusing its producers of violating production guidelines by including too much footage from Israel.

According to Arte program director Alain Le Diberder, the extensive coverage of Israel would be off topic in a film on European anti-Semitism.

This view had been heavily disputed by the producers and a large number of public figures, among them scholars, politicians and authors, who demanded the studio air the film, saying that the coverage was necessary in order to expose anti-Semitic Israel bashing.

Some voices, among them Bild editor-in-chief Julian Reichelt, raised the suspicion that, in fact, the film was not being shown because its finding that anti-Semitism is widespread in European society would be inconvenient for some.

Now the documentary will be officially shown on Germany’s Channel 1, which belongs to the ARD network, a joint organization of Germany’s regional public-service broadcasters, of which the WDR is also a member.

Initially, the WDR had been reluctant to give in to demands to screen the documentary on a different channel if Arte declined to show it. WDR claimed that it wouldn’t have the broadcasting rights and the film would suffer from journalistic shortcomings.

In a current blurb, however, the ARD announced that the broadcasting rights are now with the WDR and that it wishes to broadcast the program in spite of its alleged deficiencies "in order to give the public debate that is going on already a basis".

The screening of the documentary will be followed by a talk show that will address the alleged shortcomings of the documentary: The WDR accused Schröder and Hafner of stating uncorroborated numbers in their film regarding amounts of European tax money flowing to NGOs that engage in anti-Semitic Israel-bashing.

However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
Prof. Gerald Steinberg from the Jerusalem-based think tank NGO Monitor, which provided the respective figures, denounced the WDR’s allegation as "inaccurate" and "simply political."

Pointing to "German public TV networks’ long history of broadcasting uncorroborated anti-Israeli statements that later on were exposed as lies," author, actor and director Gerd Buurman claimed the WDR’s criticism of Schröder and Hafner’s documentary was hypocritical and applied different standards to a film on anti-Semitism than it did to programs that are critical of Israel.

Schröder and Hafner weren’t informed by the ARD about its decision to finally screen their documentary.

"We read about it in the press," says Schröder, who is hesitant to view the step as a victory.

He suspects that by following up with the talk show -- to which he and his partner Hafner weren’t invited and whose participants were not named -- the public broadcaster’s intent is to stage a tribunal against the documentary to whitewash the unpopular decision not to air the film.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Chicago goes high-tech in search of answers to gun crime surge
[BBC] In a cramped office in a police station in Chicago's 11th district, the sound of gunfire is a little computerised ping that rings out a few times a day.

Somewhere in the district a microphone has picked up the percussive sound of a bullet and sent a signal, via California, to the station, which is where Kim Smith hears about it.

Ms Smith, a data analyst from the University of Chicago, works at one of the city's new Strategic Decision Support Centres, where data, technology, and old-fashioned police work are being combined in an effort to control a sudden surge in gun violence.

Seconds after a ping, a large flatscreen monitor displays a Google map of the gunshot location. Another connects to surveillance cameras activated by the shot, sometimes fast enough to see a gunman fleeing, and usually two or three minutes before the first 911 call comes in.

The strategic centres were established in February after more than 4,000 shootings and 762 homicides in 2016 - a massive 59% increase on the previous year and more murders than New York and LA combined. President Trump threatened in January to "send in the Feds" if the city didn't fix "the horrible carnage".

Taking blueprints from similar operations in LA and New York, Chicago PD set up two centres in the city's two most violent districts - Englewood and Harrison, which account for 5% of the city's population but nearly a third of all shootings last year. Eventually there will be six across the city, with initial set-up costs of about a million dollars each.

Chicago PD borrowed civilian data analysts - including Ms Smith - from the University of Chicago in an attempt to make better use of existing technologies like the Shotspotter microphones and more sense of the crime data routinely collected by the department.

The new cutting edge of anti-gun policing in Chicago had a modest start. The Englewood district centre set up shop in a disused line-up room, the partition wall and one-way glass knocked through to make more room. The first strategic meeting of the Harrison district centre was lit by a single lamp in a bare office.

Now there are large flatscreen monitors fixed to the walls displaying live maps and charts, while analysts track data on two or three screens in front of them. Each morning there is a strategic meeting where officers and analysts pore over maps and reports, attempting to predict trends or identify trouble spots.

Using a piece of predictive software called HunchLab, they translate the data into "missions", which can involve anything from talking to local business owners in certain areas to watching certain surveillance feeds at certain times.

And they might be getting results. The two pilot districts - on the South and West sides - have seen a 30% and 39% drop in gun violence so far this year, against a 15% drop city-wide. Chicago Police Deputy Chief Jonathan Lewin, who oversaw the development of the centres, said it was still early days.

"This is still a pilot so it's tough to determine causality," he said. "Is it the process, is it the technology, is it cars being more mobile because we're tracking them more rigorously? That's the million-dollar question."

In reality, the stakes are higher than that. Chicago's murder rate soared last year, breaking 750 for the first time since the violent crime peak of the early 1990s and putting pressure on the police department to try new approaches.

Car rams police vehicle on Paris' Champs-Elysees, attacker dead
[Iran Press TV] A man has rammed his car into a police vehicle in central Gay Paree, prompting a fiery
...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob...
kaboom in what French security officials described as "a deliberate act."

French police said the incident occurred on Monday when the driver hit a police van before bursting into flames on the Champs-Elysees Avenue in the center of the capital, adding that no officers or pedestrians were maimed and that the situation was under control.

Police found a Kalashnikov rifle, handguns and gas bottles in the car.

Security forces in Gay Paree cleared the area and cordoned off the avenue, closing two nearby metro stations. Police warned people to avoid the area, which is popular with tourists.

The counter-terrorism unit of the prosecutor's office in Gay Paree has launched an investigation into the incident, which took place close to the presidential palace and the US embassy.
The Daily Mail has the usual photos and videos, and Fox News adds:
The attacker, a 31-year-old man from the Gay Paree suburb of Argenteuil, was badly burned after his car went kaboom! when he deliberately crashed it into a police van.

The attacker was identified as Adam Dzaziri. Dzaziri, who had been raised in the Salafi Islamic ideology, didn’t have a criminal record but he had been on La Belle France’s security watch list since 2015 due to ties to "the radical Islamist movement," according to news.com.au.

Road blocks placed around Helsinki church to avoid possible attacks
[NEWS.XINHUANET] Road blocks were placed on Monday around the Rock Church, a popular tourist attraction in downtown Helsinki, to protect it from possible attacks.

The police suspected an terrorist attack had been prepared targeting the church. The criminal police announced on Monday the threat was being investigated, but gave no more details.

Police inspector Tero Haapala told national broadcaster Yle Monday evening that the possible plan had been at an early stage and it was not near operational level.

The church, built partially underground, was under major police control on Sunday. The police said on Sunday "a person of interest" was being sought but could not be found.

On Monday, the driveways and pedestrian walkways around the church were partially closed with concrete blocks. Access of the public to the church was not restricted.

Besides the Lutheran services for the Toolo district congregation, the church is also open throughout the day for tourists.
