-Short Attention Span Theater-
How Did a 30-Year-Old Jet Dodge the Pentagon's Latest Missile?
By now you've probably heard that a U.S. fighter shot down a Syrian jet about a week ago. What you might not know is that before the F/A-18E hit its target, it missed‐and it missed with the best, newest U.S. missile.

On June 18, just moments after a Syrian Arab Air Force Su-22 attacked Coalition forces, a U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet strike fighter rolled into a firing position and opened fire. The Super Hornet locked onto the Su-22 "Fitter" and launched the Military's most advanced short-range air-to-air missile, which promptly missed. While the plane was eventually brought down by another, different missile, the question remains: why did the AIM-9X Sidewinder miss?

The Sukhoi Su-22 is a Cold War-era attack jet designed to strike targets on the ground. A single-seat aircraft, like many aircraft designed in the 1970s it had "swing wings." Cutting edge for its time, this feature allowed the plane to maximize its combat range. Known as "Fitter" to NATO, the Su-22 was designed solely as an air-to-ground aircraft with little to no air-to-air capability. It was produced in large numbers and widely sold abroad. The design is obsolete, and while many air forces still fly the Fitter, it isn't by choice.

The Super Hornet, meanwhile, is the U.S. Navy's top-of-the-line strike fighter. The Super Hornet is armed with both the infrared guided AIM-9X Sidewinder short range air-to-air missile and the radar-guided AIM-120 AMRAAM medium-range missile. It's a potent combination of air-to-air missiles, representing the best of American military technology.

According to CNN, the Navy Super Hornet locked onto the Su-22 Fitter at a range of 1.5 miles. The Super Hornet launched an AIM-9X, and the Syrian pilot loosed flares to lure the infrared guided missile away from his fighter. The trick worked, and the American missile missed. The Super Hornet then launched an AMRAAM missile which, using radar guidance, is unaffected by flares. This time the Fitter went down.

So why did the AIM-9X miss? A contributor to Combat Aircraft magazine proposed a plausible theory: While the 9X is designed to resist the allure of defensive flares, but it may have been too specialized in rejecting American flares. Contributor Angad Singh tweeted a story originally written by aviation authority Bill Sweetman about American tests of Soviet aircraft during the Cold War.

During the 1980s, U.S. Air Force maintained the top secret 4477th Test & Evaluation Squadron. Flying the Tonopah Test Range in Nevada, the 4477th operated Soviet fighters collected from around the world, often captured by allies, to determine their capabilities. According to the story, the Air Force received a flare dispenser that had been on a Su-25 ground attack jet shot down over Afghanistan. The dispenser was quickly attached to a MiG-21 operated by the 4477th and taken out for testing against the latest American infra-red guided missile, the AIM-9P.

What happened next surprised the Air Force. The AIM-9P Sidewinder, designed to see past flares, was readily diverted by the Soviet flares. The problem was that the -9P was too attuned to the characteristics of American flares it had been tested against and not against the Soviet flares, which according to the squadron commander between 1985 and 1987 were "dirty, and none of them looked the same."

Did something like this happen in the skies over Syria? The AIM-9X, a relatively new missile, should have easily taken down the aging Su-22 Fitter. A lot of air forces, particularly America's NATO allies, rely on the AIM-9X as their short-range missile. The news that it was unable to shoot down a 30-year-old fighter jet will be disturbing to many.

#1  Not really. Most IR missiles can be faked out by flares. A lot of the chance of success depend on aspect ratio, intercept paths, etc. If the 9X came in from the front and the jet broke so the flares are the only thing the missile really sees, any IR missile will fail to track. A behind shot is still be best chance at a shootdown with an IR missile.

#3  Fake news opinion.

The Navy never said whether a AIM-9X or 9M (non-Imaging IR sensor) was used. The 9M is known to be susceptible to flares.

The Navy also didn't say which version of the AIM-120 shot down the SU-22.

#4  Article: According to CNN, ... The Super Hornet launched an AIM-9X,

CNN: Immediately after the Syrian Su-22 fighter jet dropped its bombs, two American F/A-18E Super Hornets, flying from the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, engaged, firing a AIM-9 Sidewinder -- a short-range air-to-air missile -- at the Syrian plane from about half a mile away, two US officials told CNN.

Not like it really helped him much in the end.

Lawmakers Want Trump's Tax Returns, but Won't Release Their Own
[RollCall] Rep. Ben Ray Luján ‐ like many in Congress ‐ wants President Donald Trump to release his tax returns.

Transparency, the New Mexico Democrat said recently in a Facebook post, "is a cornerstone of democracy."

But he doesn't want to release his own tax returns. And that puts him in good company on both sides of the aisle.
Typical. One rule for thee and another for me!
Roll Call sent a request to all of the nation's senators and representatives ‐ more than 500 in all ‐ to release their tax returns. Only 37 responded, and of those, six provided the documents.

The written requests were sent at least three times over a period of several weeks, starting in April, to each lawmaker and key staff members.

Roll Call sought returns from the 2015 and 2016 tax years to accommodate members who have asked for extensions.

Roll Call reviewed public documents and media reports to determine lawmakers' positions on the release of Trump's tax returns. At least 237 lawmakers have called on the president to produce his returns.

The review, which can be viewed in full here, also sought to identify lawmakers who had released all or part of their own returns. It identified an additional 43 lawmakers in the House and the Senate who had released returns or allowed reporters to review them.
Another law that might be good for land (besides term limits) is to make it so if you run for or hold a public federal office, you MUST release your tax records every year. Would make for some very interesting reading on our socialist "Friends".

Why is the Secret Service going so easy on agent who proclaimed she wouldn't take a bullet for Trump?
[American Thinker] The top management of the Secret Service is going surprisingly easy on a senior agent ‐ one with daily managerial leadership responsibilities ‐ who publicly proclaimed on Facebook last October that she would rather face jail time than take a bullet for Donald Trump, along with other posts opposing him. Trump Derangement Syndrome among the Praetorians is a mortal threat to the incumbent in the office of Commander in Chief.

In fact, she continues to receive her salary and move forward toward the rich retirement package that awaits federal employees, allowing them extended vacations with no financial worries so long as they shall live.

If the Secret Service were serious about sending a message that agents may never allow their personal political views to affect their protective efforts on the behalf of their assigned responsibilities, there are serious actions that could have been taken, despite the fact that "Secret Service employees are federal workers with multiple layers of job protections and legal due-process rights."

Liberal Activists Accidentally Fly Banner Attacking Nevada Republican Over West Virginia
Liberal activists in West Virginia accidentally flew an aerial message attacking a Republican senator representing a completely different state on the other side of the country.

Reporters at the Charleston Gazette-Mail on Monday noticed a plane flying around West Virginia's capital city with a banner reading, "SEN HELLER: KEEP YOUR WORD VOTE NO ON TRUMPCARE."

The only problem? Republican Sen. Dean Heller represents Nevada. The GOP senator representing West Virginia is Shelley Moore Capito.

Student who registered the dead to vote is headed to prison
[American Thinker] Another voter fraud case that we can safely ignore because, as we all know, there's no such thing as voter fraud.

A Democratic party operative in Virginia is going to jail for 100 days after pleading guilty to registering dead people to vote. James Madison University student Andrew J. Spieles, 21, worked for Harrisonburg Votes, a political organization affiliated with the Democratic Party.

As it turns out, the young man wasn't very bright.

Buchanan: Are Illinois & Puerto Rico Our Future?
[TownHall] If Gov. Bruce Rauner and his legislature in Springfield do not put a budget together by Friday, the Land of Lincoln will be the first state in the Union to see its debt plunge into junk-bond status.
High taxes, huge government, cheap, illegal alien labor and Chinese imports. Those are the keys to success.
Illinois has $14.5 billion in overdue bills, $130 billion in unfunded pension obligations, and no budget. "We can't manage our money," says Rauner. "We're like a banana republic."

Speaking of banana republics, Puerto Rico, which owes $74 billion to creditors who hold its tax-exempt bonds, and $40 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, has already entered bankruptcy proceedings.

The island's imaginative 38-year-old governor, Ricardo Rossello, however, has a solution. Call Uncle Sam. On June 11, Rossello held a plebiscite, with a 23 percent turnout, that voted 97 percent to make Puerto Rico our 51st state.

"(T)he federal government will no longer be able to ignore the voice of the majority of the American citizens in Puerto Rico," said Rossello. Washington cannot "demand democracy in other parts of the world, and not respond to the legitimate right to self-determination that was exercised today in the American territory of Puerto Rico."

Had the governor been talking about the island's right to become free and independent, he would have had a point. But statehood inside the USA is something Uncle Sam decides.

Now we know for sure Trump is totally evil
While most countries around the world saw sharp declines in the level of confidence in the White House since the transfer of power on January 20th from the Obama administration to the Trump administration, Israelis seem to be more optimistic about American leadership since President Trump took office.

...While nearly all countries saw declines in the level of confidence in the White House, Israelis became more confident, with 56% saying they had confidence in President Trump, compared to just 49% who said the same about Obama in 2015. Israeli Jews were more likely than Israeli Arabs to express confidence in President Trump, with 64% of Jews saying they were confident in his leadership, compared to just 25% of Arabs.
So, 25% of Israeli Arabs are really Israeli, whereas 36% of Israeli Jews are dumber than sh*t.
If taken separately, Israeli Jews showed the second highest level of confidence in the Trump White House, after the Philippines at 69%.

...Aside from Israel, confidence in American leadership rose only in one other country: Russia. While confidence climbed 7% in Israel, in surged by 42 points in Russia, from 11% in 2015 to 53% in 2017 ‐ the highest level on record since the survey began asking the question in 2001.
Loved by Israelis, Russians, and Filipinos - hated by everybody else.

Soetoro takes vacation from 'Resist' - travels back to his roots at 4 Seasons Bali
[Hot Air] Barack Obama is off on another extended vacation abroad this week, this time in Indonesia where he spent much of his formative childhood years.

Since his White House lease expired in January, the ex-president has vacationed at a friend’s house in Palm Springs, on Richard Branson’s private Caribbean island, on David Geffen’s private yacht in French Polynesia and in a Tuscan hamlet purchased in its entirety by John Phillips. Obama appointed Phillips ambassador to Italy. He turned the old town into a private luxury estate.

Now, after a lengthy private jet flight from Hawaii, Obama’s back home again in Indonesia for nine days with a large family entourage, including wife Michelle and half-sister, Maya Soetero-Ng, her family and, of course, Secret Service agents. If you’re walking through Times Square later this week, watch the moving billboards as Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry plays off the Democrat’s trip seeking to attract other foreign visitors.

The Obamas are reportedly staying in a $2,500-a-night set of suites in the Four Seasons Resort on Bali and making several excursions to cultural and heritage sites. Last weekend the Chicagoan was photographed walking among rice paddies. Obama is also scheduled to give a speech next weekend in Jakarta, capital of the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

Three CNN Journalists Resign Over Retracted Story Targeting Trump Ally
[Free Beacon] Three CNN journalists, including the executive editor in charge of the network's new investigative unit, resigned on Monday after CNN retracted a story last week.

"In the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on CNN.com, CNN has accepted the resignations of the employees involved in the story's publication," a CNN spokesman said Monday evening.

Thomas Frank, who wrote the retracted story in question; Eric Lichtblau, an editor in the investigative unit; and Lex Haris, who oversaw the unit, all resigned their positions.

The retracted article was posted last Thursday and claimed that "longtime Trump ally Anthony Scaramucci, who played a significant role on [Donald Trump's] White House transition team, had deep ties to a $10 billion Russian investment fund owned by a Kremlin-connected bank," according to the Washington Examiner.

Scaramucci responded on Thursday to a supporter of President Donald Trump on Twitter, who said that Scaramucci was being slandered on CNN.

FBI Won't Confirm or Deny Existence of Records of Payment to British Trump Dossier Researcher Steele
[Free Beacon] The FBI will not confirm or deny the existence of records showing whether the bureau paid the researcher behind the unverified, controversial dossier alleging ties between President Donald Trump and Russia.
Perhaps former Director Comey could shed some light.
Christopher Steele, a former British spy, gathered information for the dossier while working for a Washington research firm that supporters of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign hired. Trump has denied that the dossier is true while Steele has said parts of it are unverified.

BLUF:Cause of Action Institute president and CEO John Vecchione released a statement castigating the FBI's response.

"The FBI is circling the wagons by claiming potential harm to national security if it discloses its relationship with Christopher Steele," Vecchione said. "Regardless of whether a payment was ever made, the FBI's affiliation with a political opposition researcher in the midst of a presidential election deserves scrutiny."

"The FBI should be forthcoming about whether and how the agency was relying upon a former foreign spy who, in the pay of private parties, compiled a report of salacious accusations intended to harm the reputation of then-candidate Donald Trump," Vecchione added.

#1  From the Independent:

Earlier, it was reported that the FBI had been considering paying Mr Steele to continue his research once the election was over and the Democrats withdrew funding. In the end, Mr Steele was so worried by what he had found that he ended up working on the dossier for free, as The Independent reported in January.

Center Connected to Rep. Bobby Rush's Church Has Received $15 Million in Gov't Grants
[Free Beacon] A wellness center connected to a church founded by Illinois Democratic Rep. Bobby Rush has received $650,000 in taxpayer-funded government grants in 2017, public records show and has pulled in more than $15 million in grants since 2008.

Rush, who was first elected to Congress in 1992, founded the Beloved Community Christian Church, a non-denominational church located in Chicago, in 2002.

"I founded a church in Englewood, one of Chicago's poorest and most fragile neighborhoods, and named it Beloved Community Christian Church," Rush wrote in a 2011 op-ed published in the Huffington Post. "The church, once the site of a Black Panther breakfast program for children, now stands in tribute to Dr. King's vision of the power of community. A social service center, a health center and an after school robotics program are also part of the church's mission to care for people."

The Democratic congressman has steered hundreds of thousands in campaign funds to the church.

Rush began making donations from his campaign to the Beloved Community Christian Church in 2006, just two years after it had opened. Since that time, nearly $200,000 was funneled to the church.

Baltimore Restaurant Owner Says 30 Employees Left Due To ICE Crackdown
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The owner of one of Canton’s most popular waterfront restaurants, The Boathouse, says more than 30 immigrant workers left in fear after a Department of Homeland Security worker hand-delivered a letter demanding documentation of their immigration status.

That stunned the eatery’s customers.

"It seems like terrorizing people who are trying to work at the restaurant," says customer Michelle Zhang. "It’s not only bad for for the business but it’s bad for the families."

"If that many left... are they not following the policy?" asks Ryan Horan, another customer. "Are they not doing it the way they should be doing it?"

Owner Gene Singleton insists his business was in compliance with immigration law.

Harvard Poll: Majority Believe Deep State Leaking to ‘Unseat' Trump
[Breitbart] A majority of Americans believe that the "Deep State" is trying to "unseat" President Donald Trump, according to the most recent Harvard-Harris poll.

The poll asked respondents: "Specifically, do you think the so called ’Deep State’ ‐ the collection of intelligence agencies and holdover government workers from the Obama administration -- is trying to unseat President Trump using leaks of classified information?"

Fifty-four percent of respondents answered "yes" while 46% believed the Deep State is not trying to unseat Trump, who has repeatedly asserted that he is the victim of a "Witch Hunt."

The Deep State has leaked to establishment media outlets like the Washington Post and New York Times to undermine and smear Trump and his advisers, some of whom are reportedly being investigated by the FBI for their ties to or meetings with various Russian officials. These outlets have written stories, based on anonymous Deep State sources, that, among other things, have suggested Trump revealed classified information to the Russians and called former FBI director James Comey a "nut job."

Over the weekend, Pat Buchanan said there is a "classic struggle... between the incoming Trump presidency, which is really embattled in its first five months, and what might be called the Deep State, which is the permanent government in Washington, D.C."

Israel strikes Hamas posts in Gaza after rocket-fire
[IsraelTimes] Military says it targeted infrastructure in north and south of enclave following earlier launch that hit Sha’ar Hanegev region.

The Israeli Air Force on Monday night struck two Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, infrastructure targets in the north and south of the Gazoo Strip, the military said.

The IDF said the strikes came in response to a rocket launch from the Strip earlier in the night.

Strikes were recorded in at least three locations in Gazoo, Paleostinian sources and eyewitnesses said, with Hamas bases struck near the southern city of Rafah and Gazoo City in the north, as well as open land southeast of Gazoo City.

Gazoo health officials said there were no immediate reports of injuries, but an AFP photographer in Gazoo saw at least one man bleeding being taken for treatment from a house near the base.

Earlier a rocket hit southern Israel, in the Sha’ar Hanegev region, not causing any damage or casualties.

The launch was claimed by a salafist
...also known as Wahhabis, salafists are against innovation in religion or in anything else. They eat the same things every meal of every day and all their children are named Abdullah or Mohammed. Not all salafists are takfiris, but all takfiris are salafists. They are fond of praying five times a day and killing infidels...
group linked to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, according to Hebrew media reports.

Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for any attacks emanating from the territory it controls, and has in the past responded to any launch with strikes on Hamas targets.

Hamas rulers said earlier this month it was not interested in a fresh round of conflict, even as electricity cuts requested by Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
, and facilitated by Israel, threatened to lead to new violence.

Abbas has led a high-stakes campaign to weaken Hamas by gradually reducing the flow of electricity to the territory he lost to the terrorist group in 2007.

Egypt has since stepped in to ship in fuel to make up for most of the power cuts, though its not clear how long the shipments will continue.

On Monday, the Haaretz daily reported that human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
groups and officials in Gazoo suspect Abbas is also attempting to keep Gazooks from being able to seek medical attention in Israel as a means of ramping up pressure.

Israeli security concerns have shifted in the last few days to the northern border, where fighting in neighboring Syria has bled into Israel, with fire from mortars and small arms hitting in the Golan Heights. Israel has struck back at Syrian regime targets several times in retaliation.

Earlier Monday, Defense Minister Avidgor Liberman said Israel has "no intention of launching a military operation" against Syria or Gazoo. But Liberman added that despite the military establishment’s hope for calm on Israel’s borders, it will not tolerate any provocations, even accidental fire that spills over from a neighboring conflict.

Ten more mass graves discovered in DR Congo
[AA.TR] Ten more mass graves with an unspecified number of bodies inside have been discovered in Kasai region, Congolese authorities said Monday.

"The operational command has just discovered 10 mass graves in Tshikapa-Sumbula-Diboko localities located in the province of Kasai," Attorney General Flory Kabange Numbi said in a statement.

"A team under the leadership of a magistrate has already visited the place on instructions from the Auditor General of the Armed Forces of the DRC," he added.

The latest discovery brings the total number of mass graves found so far up to 50.

On April 19, the UN said in a statement that its Sherlocks had uncovered 17 additional mass graves bringing the total mass graves discovered in one month to 40.

On April 4, the UN mission in DRC, MONUSCO announced it had discovered 23 mass graves in the area.

Meteorite ‘size of a small car’ causes buzz after hitting Sudan
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Sudanese Ministry of Minerals announced on Sunday that they found fragments of a meteorite, which had struck earth on Wednesday in the southern White Nile state.

Head of the geological team Othman Abu Aqla said that the team received the fragments of the stone and tests found radioactive elements in the field in which the meteorite fragments fell.

He added that when they measured the radioactivity of the collected samples of the meteorites they turned out to be at normal levels.

Last Wednesday, the General Authority for Geological Research announced that “the unrecognized object fell in the White Nile and caused panic among the residents is most likely a meteorite.”

Eyewitnesses told local media that an object the size of a small car fell from the sky on Wednesday morning.

The witnesses said that the fall of the meteorite was accompanied by a loud sound and a bright light in the skies of several regions in the state.

Iran uncovers huge arms depot of terror group: Intelligence minister
[Iran Press TV] Iranian Intelligence Minister Seyyed Mahmoud Alavi says the country’s security forces have succeeded in dealing a drastic blow to a terrorist outfit in possession of "a very large" arms cache.

"Yesterday, we dealt a blow in a timely measure to a terrorist team, which had a very large cache of arms and ammunition in its possession," Alavi told news hounds on Monday.

He added that the Iranian security forces were in full command of the situation and emphasized that their efforts had minimized the possibility of any act of terror by terrorist organizations and groups.

He assured the land of the Medes and the Persians that the security forces’ operations to counter terrorism were not limited to a specific time period and that Iranians could enjoy peace and security every day.

After the twin terrorist attacks in Tehran in early June, Iran increased its counterterrorism operations across the country.

Scotland, Wales outraged at £1bn deal to keep May in power
[Iran Press TV] British Prime Minister Theresa May is facing backlash from Scotland and Wales over her deal with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), aimed at securing her grip on power.

DUP leader Arlene Foster agreed to a confidence and supply arrangement on Monday in exchange for £1 billion as well as relaxed spending rules for another £500 million previously committed.

The agreement was described as a “straight bung to keep a weak prime minister and a faltering government in office” by the Labour first minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon (pictured above) also voiced outrage over the “shameless deal.”

“In concluding this grubby, shameless deal the Tories have shown that they will stop at nothing to hold on to power – even sacrificing the very basic principles of devolution,” she said.

Amish runaway captured
[FOXNEWS] An Ohio trooper was forced to conduct an unusual traffic stop when he spotted a runaway horse pulling an Amish buggy without anyone at the reins.

The horse was reported on the loose in Wooster Sunday morning.

Sgt. C.O. Smith, one of the responding officers, caught up to the panting horse on foot on State Road 250, the Wooster Daily Record reported.

He was able to bring the horse to a stop after running alongside the buggy, jumping in and grabbing the reins.

"I’m just glad it turned out okay," Smith told the paper. "That could have been a bigger incident with a 2,000-pound animal running in the wrong lane."

The paper reported that the horse had galloped about 10 miles and collapsed from exhaustion after being corralled.

Smith told the paper the horse wasn't hurt. The horse was examined by a veterinarian and given some water.

Police tracked down the owner who retrieved the horse.

"Every new day brings with it new challenges," the Wooster Police Department said in a Facebook post about that incident.

Philippines army believes Marawi crisis about to end
[AA.TR] A military official on Monday expressed confidence that government victory over the ISIS-linked Maute group in Marawi was "irreversible".

In a press briefing in the besieged city, military front man Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera said that the holy warriors’ leadership in the battle zone was already "crumbling" due to problems encountered such as depleting firepower and other resources and communication breakdown, ABS-CBN News reported.

"We have validated reports of leadership problems inside. They also lack ammunition," Herrera said. "There is the issue of money, the issue of decision making," he added.

The government has cleared 86 buildings previously controlled by the holy warriors, and Herrera said that the troops were "inch by inch moving towards the center of gravity".

Herrera also confirmed that a civilian rescued from the war zone reported seeing Father Teresito Suganob, the Catholic priest kidnapped by the bandidos Lions of Islam from St. Mary's Cathedral along with some parishioners.

The planned rescue of trapped civilians during the eight-hour Eid truce staged Sunday was aborted as bandidos Lions of Islam continued firing. A child and four others were successfully recovered. However,

Unte, however, clarified that these teachers might not be necessarily trapped inside the war zone.

The battle between the government forces and the Maute group in Marawi City prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to place all of Mindanao under martial law on May 23.

acting Emir Liaquat Baloch says the split in the Eid celebrations on sectarian grounds in this age of advance science has made the nation a laughing stock.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner in the city on Sunday, he stressed that the federal and provincial governments should resolve the issue of moon-sighting on a permanent basis with the consultation of religious scholars.

Mr Baloch said the government had made the month of Ramazan and its different forms of worship a joke and its attitude was almost criminal.

However,

he said, the poor and sincere people would be duly rewarded by Allah for their noble deeds during the sacred month.

Multiple bomb attacks kill 16 in northeastern Nigeria
[Iran Press TV] The Nigerian police say multiple kabooms have claimed the lives of at least 16 people and maimed more than a dozen others in the country’s troubled northeast.

Police said on Monday that seven kabooms were carried out by suspected members of the Boko Haram

terrorist group in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

The kabooms occurred at the University of Maiduguri and in the Jere area of the city on Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Borno police sources noted that a male bomber killed a security guard after entering the university late on Sunday.

Around an hour later, four female bombers killed eight people on the outskirts of the city in Zannari community, in the Gwange district of Jere local government authority after detonating devices in residential buildings.

Two female bombers were the only people to die in two blasts at the university on Monday morning.

Damian Chukwu, Borno police commissioner, confirmed that at least 16 people had been killed in the latest wave of violence hitting the region.

"In all, 16 persons, including the bombers, died in the multiple kabooms while 13 persons were maimed," he said.

No group has so far grabbed credit for the latest attacks but they bear the hallmark of the Boko Haram Takfiri terrorist group, as it in the past employed radicalized females on multiple occasions to conduct bombing attacks against people or army troops.

Iran-Qatar ties benefit regional nations: Rouhani
[Iran Press TV] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s policy is based on strengthening relations with Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
, stressing that "brotherly and friendly" Tehran-Doha ties will be beneficial to regional nations.

In a telephone conversation with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Sunday, Rouhani said the Iranian government and nation would stand by Qatar.

He added that Iran sought continued cooperation with Qatar and stressed the importance of making use of the enormous bilateral capacities to further strengthen relations.

"[Iran’s] help for Qatar’s economy and the expansion of ties, particularly between the two countries’ private sectors, can be among our common goals," Rouhani said.
The Iranian chief executive added that the Islamic Theocratic Republic wanted the rule of moderation and rationality in relations among countries in the region and expressed hope that the existing regional issues would be solved through dialogue.

"We believe that if there is a dispute among regional countries, pressure, threat or sanctions are not an appropriate way to settle disputes," Rouhani said.
He expressed the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s readiness to contribute to and help the establishment of peace in the region.

Rouhani further criticized as unacceptable the Saudi-led embargo on Qatar, saying, "Our country’s airspace, land and [territorial] waters will always be open to Qatar as a brotherly and neighboring country."

Bahrain blames Qatar for ‘military tensions’ in Persian Gulf crisis
[Iran Press TV] Bahrain's foreign minister has accused Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
of creating a military escalation in the Persian Gulf region in the wake of a recent move by Soddy Arabia

and its allies to sever their diplomatic relations with Doha, and close their borders and airspace with the gas-rich kingdom.

"The disagreement with Qatar is a political and security dispute, and has never been military," Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifah wrote in a post published on his Twitter page on Monday.

He added, "But the deployment of foreign troops with their armored vehicles is a military escalation for which Qatar will bear the consequences."

"Certain regional powers are mistaken if they think that their intervention will resolve the problem," Sheikh Khalid said on Twitter.

On Sunday, Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Huseyin Muftuoglu stated that Turkish efforts to set up a military base in Qatar had nothing to do with the ongoing diplomatic crisis between Doha and other Arab countries.

"The purpose of the deployment of the Turkish Armed Forces in Qatar is to contribute to the security of the region as well as to provide Qatar with support in military training. Our activities are not against any particular country," he said.

Bernie and Jane lawyer up
[Dhaka Tribune] The probe is looking into whether Jane falsified bank documents in 2010 in an attempt to secure a $10m loan to expand the college’s campus

US Senator Bernie Sanders
...The only openly Socialist member of the U.S. Senate. Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords...
and his wife Jane Sanders have hired lawyers amid an FBI investigation into a loan Jane obtained to expand Burlington College while she was its president.

Jane Sanders served as president of Burlington College from 2004 to 2011, reports the Huffington Post.

She has been accused of falsely inflating projected donor contributions in the loan application, reports said.

The probe is looking into whether Jane falsified bank documents in 2010 in an attempt to secure a $10m loan to expand the college’s campus.

According to Politico magazine, the FBI probe may also look into whether Bernie Sanders used his political influence to pressurise the bank to approve the loan which was a factor in the school shuttering its doors in 2016 after it found itself unable to pay off its debt.

Explosion at Sulaimani mosque targets controversial preacher, slightly injures five
[RUDAW.NET] An kaboom has been reported at Sulaimani's Bahasht mosque where Dr. Abdul Latif, a controversial Salafi preacher, was preaching. At least five people have been injured.

"A hand grenade was thrown into the courtyard of Bahasht mosque in Ibrahim Ahmed neighborhood at 9:10 pm, June 16, 2017. Three people were lightly injured in the attack. Asayesh forces arrived at the scene of the event and started their investigations. We will inform the public after we find a lead. We wish a quick recovery to the injured," reads a statement from the Sulaimani Asayesh, security forces.

The hand grenade was thrown when Latif was leaving the mosque for his house located next to the mosque, Latif told Rudaw after he received treatment in his house for injuries he sustained from the attack, described as "light."

He soon returned to the mosque to say his Ramadan prayers with members of his congregation, in a defiant message.

The motive for the attack on the mosque is not known at this time.

Latif told Rudaw that it may have to do with his anti-ISIS stance.

"When you defend your people, the Peshmerga, and [make remarks] against terrorists, surely you will pay the price," Latif said, adding that he has been receiving threats from the ISIS group via its social media channels.

He seems to have been the target of the attack as the bomb was thrown at the Islamic preacher.

He said he heard a sound and then saw the grenade before it went kaboom!.

"I do not have any personal problems myself, thanks to God," Latif told news hounds from within the mosque after the attack, "But we always hear ISIS threats, and just yesterday I was talking about ISIS on one of the media outlets. I think this could be the reason."

He said he remains committed to his public stance that what ISIS is doing is not "Islam," but rather aimed at conveying a bad image of the religion.

He also said that about three years ago he asked security forces in Sulaimani to provide security for his mosque and an Islamic channel he owns, but the security forces have not done so.

He has a satellite channel called Amozhgari or Preaching that focuses on teaching the Salafi version of Sunni Islam.

Benghazi municipality starts in Suq Al-Hout clean-up as more stolen treasure found
[Libya Herald] Benghazi municipal council has started to clean up the general detritus of war ‐ the rubble and litter ‐ in the city’s downtown area of Suq al-Hout, much of which was destroyed in the long battle to dislodge Islamist gunnies from the area which finally came to an end last Friday.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the council said that the work, initially aimed at ensuring the streets are clear so that traffic can move freely, was being carried out in collaboration with the Libyan National Army which was clearing mines. Army engineers are said to have removed more than 200 mines in the area by yesterday, in some cases simply by blowing them up.

Such action is thought unlikely to cause any further serious damage to the already extensive destruction of what was the most beautiful part of the city.

In a separate development, following last weekend’s news that a treasure trove of historic books looted from Benghazi university was found in Ganfouda, it is now reported that some classical-era objects have been recovered in Suq al-Hout. One is a Roman, possibly Greek head. It is being claimed that it was part of the "Benghazi Treasure" ‐ the vast horde of archaeological items held at the National Commercial Bank until looted during the 2011 revolution.

It has not been possible, at present, however, to verify if the claim is true or, if not, from where the items came.

LNA claims advances in Benghazi’s Sabri
[Libya Herald] Two soldiers have died in fighting in Benghazi’s Sabri district as the Libyan National Army (LNA) moves its forces forward from Suq al-Hout finally taken from forces of Evil on Friday.

On Friday and Saturday, Sabri was subjected to a series of Arclight airstrikes. LNA commanders have used fixed camera and regular drone flights to monitor Death Eater activity and pinpoint likely strongpoints.

An LNA source said a week ago that the Eid feast was not going to interfere with military operations. Last Eid, thinly-manned LNA positions to the south of Ganfouda were breached by forces of Evil in an humiliating dawn breakout through what one LNA commander had boasted was a ring of steel.

Officially the LNA says the current fighting is intense but its relatively low frontline casualties suggest that Death Eater resistance is weakening. Deaths and injuries from IEDs in areas recently overrun appear as frequent as from enemy fire, including deadly snipers.

There are indeed large quantities of unwent kaboom! ordinance and undiscovered booby traps in areas wrested from the Death Eaters. On Saturday the LNA repeated its warning to civilians not to try and return to their residences until they were told they had been cleared by military engineers. The problem for those impatient to get home is that de-mining teams are spread thinly and priority is being given to areas in the frontline.

Swede held by al-Qaeda in Mali freed
Fly! Be free!
[Al Jazeera] A Swede who had been held hostage by al-Qaeda in Mali since 2011 has been sprung, the Swedish government has announced.

Johan Gustafsson returned home and was reunited with his family, Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom told news hounds late on Monday as she showed a picture of the ex-captive surrounded by his relatives.

"I welcomed him home, and I can say that he is in good health and is holding up well, given the circumstances," she said.

Wallstrom refused to provide details about how Sweden secured Gustafsson's release, saying only that it occurred "a couple of days ago" and was the result of "several years of efforts" by police, politicians and diplomats, as well as Swedish and international authorities.

She also did not comment on whether a ransom was paid. She said only that "Sweden's policy is to not pay ransoms in the event of kidnappings".

'Malian officials helped'
A Malian security source meanwhile told the AFP news agency that officials in the West African country had "helped secure the release of the Swedish hostage. He was released in the Mali desert".

Gustafsson, 42, was kidnapped in Timbuktu, northern Mali, in November 2011 along with South African national Stephen McGown and Dutchman Sjaak Rijke.

There was no immediate word on the fate of McGown. Rijke had been freed in 2015 by French special forces.

Gustafsson was on a cycle of violence trip from Sweden to South Africa when he was kidnapped.
That was dumb. Once you leave Europe, you leave civilization far behind.
He, Rijke and McGown were seized along with several others by a group of gunnies while on the terrace of their hotel.

Rijke's wife managed to escape, but a German who tried to resist the abduction was killed.

Al-Qaeda's North African affiliate, al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), grabbed credit for the kidnappings.

Turkey refuses to pull out troops from Qatar, citing sovereign rights
[RUDAW.NET] Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan rejected calls from Arab nations for Turkey to close its military base in Qatar, vowing to continue to work with its Gulf-state ally in a speech today in Istanbul.

“We welcome [Qatar’s position] because we consider the 13-point list to be against international law,” Turkish Hurriyet Daily News reported that Erdoğan told reporters on Sunday in Istanbul. “What we are talking about here is an attack on the sovereign rights of a state. There cannot be such an attack on countries’ sovereignty rights in international law.”

Qatar has been issued 13 demands which among other things include closing the Turkish military base, cutting relations with Iran, closing Al Jazeera television and paying reparations.

on suspicion on links with terrorism after a request to detain them was allegedly sent to the Saudi authorities by the Egyptian government.

Mahmud Ben Rajab and Mohammed al-Khadrawi are also said to be on a list of "terrorists" sent by the interim government in Beida to the Saudis. Both were allegedly detained yesterday at Jeddah airport as they were preparing to leave after performing Umrah.

According to one source, the two are members of the Farouk brigade, one of the Islamist militias led by Shaaban Masoud Hadia, better known as Abu Obaida al-Zawi. It is claimed that they were involved in the kidnapping of five Egyptian diplomats in January 2014 when al-Zawi, at the time the head of the Libyan Revolutionaries’ Operations Room, was arrested by the police in Alexandria on suspicion of having links with al-Qaeda. Because of the kidnappings, the Egyptians were forced to release him. Following his release, the five were then freed.

The Farouk brigade and Zawi are holy warriorly opposed to both the Libyan National Army and Khalifa Hafter in the east and the Presidency Council in the west.

Although said to be on a list sent to Riyadh by the Beida government, neither Ben Rajab not Khadrawi are on the "terrorist" list compiled a fortnight ago by the House of Representatives’s defence committee, and supposedly dispatched to the Saudis. However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
Zawi is on it, described as being a member of "the military wing of al-Qaeda".

So far, all the reports of the two arrests come from Libyan sources. Saudi sources have been unable to confirm them.

The source added that scores of Takfiri ISIS bad boyz were potted and their munitions destroyed during the operation, noting that bomb disposal teams are now clearing the area of landmines and improvised bombs (IEDs) planted by the Lion of Islams.

The fighter jets of the Syrian Air Force also carried out a series of Arclight airstrikes against ISIS positions and supply routes across Dayr al-Zawr Province, leaving a large number of the Takfiris dead and injured.

Separately, Syrian army units struck ISIS positions in the vicinity of al-Maqaber and al-Panorama areas, killing 18 ISIS snuffies and destroying an armored vehicle as well as two pickup trucks equipped with heavy machineguns.

Syrian government forces also repulsed a Lion of Islam attack, killing a number of snuffies and destroying five pickup trucks equipped with heavy machineguns, two ammunition trucks and two rocket launchers.

Syria has been fighting different foreign-sponsored Lion of Islam and terrorist groups since March 2011. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimated last August that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the crisis until then.

Ohio restores websites hacked with pro-Islamic State messages
[AlAhram] Ohio officials say they've restored 11 government websites that were hacked with a message purporting to be supportive of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

A front man for the Department of Administrative Services says affected websites were restored by Monday morning. That department is working with public safety officials to investigate how sites were hacked Sunday with a message that ended with: "I love the Islamic state."

It affected websites for the governor and his wife, the lieutenant governor and the inspector general, as well as Ohio's Medicaid and prisons agencies. The list also included sites for Ohio's casino and facilities commissions, the offices of Health Transformation and Workforce Transformation, and the government streamlining effort LeanOhio.

The same message infiltrated government websites in Brookhaven, New York, and Howard County, Maryland.
The Times of Israel adds:
The message was left by "Team System Dz".

Authors of the website "Cryptosphere," which tracks hackers worldwide, have detailed dozens, if not hundreds, of similar hacks in recent years by the so-called Team System DZ, which they called a "pro-ISIS hacker crew" and claim are based in Algeria.
In the past, the group also grabbed credit for similar hacks in the past in Richland County, Wisconsin, and in places such as Aberdeen, Scotland, and Sweden.

The hack is part of ongoing cyberterrorism that has impacted governments and corporations across the globe.

Some see these types of hacks -- sometimes called "defacement" -- as simply a nuisance, though in some instances, they have been disruptive to work and government life.

But others see cause for alarm. "Wake up freedom-loving Americans. Radical Islam infiltrating the heartland," Josh Mandel, the Ohio treasurer and a Republican candidate for US Senate, said in a tweet Sunday.

Authors of the website "Cryptosphere," which tracks hackers worldwide, have detailed dozens, if not hundreds, of similar hacks in recent years by the so-called Team System DZ, which they called a "pro-ISIS hacker crew" and claim are based in Algeria.

Impacted websites, they said, have included those for a synagogue in Florida, the student union at the University of New Brunswick in Canada, for UK Rugby and a number of websites on WordPress.

8 Chad soldiers killed in clashes with Boko Haram
[AlAhram] Eight Chadian soldiers were killed in fierce fighting with Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
turbans at the weekend on islands on Lake Chad, the army said Monday.

"Our forces attacked Boko Haram elements on five islands near Nigeria on June 24 and 25," said Chad army front man Colonel Azem, indicating eight soldiers had died and another 18 were maimed.

He also claimed troops had killed 162 jihadists from the Nigeria-based group, and destroyed six vehicles along with many of the cycle of violences often favoured by Boko Haram fighters in their raids.

Chad is part of a five-nation regional force -- also comprising Nigeria, Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
, Niger and Benin -- fighting Boko Haram, which is blamed for killing at least 20,000 people and leaving another 2.6 million homeless.

Chad's President Idriss Deby threatened on Sunday to pull the country's troops out of peacekeeping operations in Africa because of a lack of foreign financial support.

Chad has contributed the third-largest contingent to MINUSMA, the UN peacekeeping mission deployed in Mali in response to Islamist insurgency, with 1,390 soldiers.

Deby indicated that N'Djamena lacks help to pay for its 2,000 men in the Joint Task Force battling Boko Haram, which emerged in northeastern Nigeria in 2009 and has in recent years attacked across borders.

"We have not at all been supported on the financial, economic side," he said in an interview with several French media.

"If nothing is done, if that goes on, Chad will be obliged to withdraw," he added. "We can't keep being everywhere -- in Niger, in Cameroon and in Mali. All that is excessively expensive."

Chad's army is one of the most battle-hardened in the region, but the country faces a major economic crisis made worse by low oil prices, its main source of revenue.

There have been frequent festivities on the many small islands of Lake Chad since the Boko Haram conflict began in 2009. The lake borders four countries on the edge of the Sahara: Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria.

ISIS wives escaping Raqqa regret joining group ‘that deviated from Islam’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Whether they joined their husbands willingly or not, many wives of ISIS murderous Moslems say the group’s turban members are desperate for their families to leave as Iraqi armed forces inch their way closer to recapturing towns close to the center of djinn-infested Mosul.
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"We wish for nothing except to go back to our home countries. We regret our decisions to come here and join our husbands in the first place," one woman, who wished to remain unnamed, told Al Arabiya.
Shouldn't they be enslaved? That's in the Islamic rule book, isn't it?
Iraqi forces on Monday seized control of al-Farouq district on the northwestern side of Old Mosul on Monday. The neighborhood is located on the opposite side of the historic al-Nuri Mosque, which was destroyed by ISIS last week.

In Raqqa, US-backed fighters seized a quarter of Syria's Raqqa from ISIS group, a monitor said Monday, less than three weeks after they first entered the northern city.

Noor al-Huda al-Qassim is one of the wives who managed to escape by help from her own husband, who said the situation in Raqqa was growing so desperate that he forced his wife to pose as a refugee and flee with civilians.

"My husband came to me and said what is important for now is that you leave the state (ISIS) and we’ll find you a way to reach your family," she said.

Many women joined ISIS back in 2014 willingly after the bully boy group opened up a "marriage bureau" for women who wanted to marry its murderous Moslems in Syria. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
women who escaped the group told Al Arabiya that many quickly became disillusioned once they realized the reality of life under ISIS rule.

"Above all, we regret joining a group that deviated from Islam," the unnamed ISIS wife said.

Syed Salahuddin a Specially Designated Global Terrorist
[DAWN] The US State Department on Monday designated Hizbul Mujahideen's supreme commander Syed Salahuddin
...the aging, morbidly obese chief of Hizbul Mujaheddin and the titular head of the United Jihad Council in idyllic Kashmire. Originally owned body and theoretical soul by Jamaat-e-Islami he and his organization are currently controlled by Pakistain's ISI. Salahuddin's hobbies include crocheting doilies shaped like the Taj Mahal, combing his enormous beard, and eating....
as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) and imposed sanctions on him.

He is the leader of the largest Death Eater group that fights against security forces in India-held Kashmire.

The development surfaced hours ahead of the scheduled meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
He was designated a terrorist "under Section 1(b) of Executive Order (EO) 13224, which imposes sanctions on foreign persons who have committed, or pose a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism that threaten the security of US nationals" or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States, said a release issued from the US State Department.

The action bars US persons from financial transactions with Hizbul Mujahideen supreme leader Syed Salahuddin.

The department says that in September 2016, Salahuddin vowed to block any peaceful resolution to the Kashmire conflict. He threatened to train Kashmiri jacket wallahs and turn the Kashmire valley "into a graveyard for Indian forces."

The US says the Death Eater group has grabbed credit for several attacks.

The scheduled meeting between Modi and Trump is the first between the leaders of the world's two largest democracies. It takes place amid uncertainty over the relationship because of differences on trade and other issues.

France not to accept Russia's annexation of Crimea
[AA.TR] French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that La Belle France would not accept Russia’s annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.

Speaking to news hounds after a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Gay Paree, Macron said La Belle France was committed to Ukraine's illusory sovereignty with its recognized borders.

Macron said he conveyed to Poroshenko that La Belle France wanted the implementation of the February 2015 Minsk Agreement for ending the violence between government forces and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. The implementation of the cease-fire agreement remains stalled after more than two years.

Poroshenko said he expected the next "Normandy format" talks between La Belle France, Germany, Ukraine and Russia to be held at the end of June or at the beginning of July, adding he was "more optimistic" about the issue following his meeting with Macron.

Ukraine has been wracked by conflict since March 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea after an illegal independence vote.

This followed violent anti-government protests which led to the overthrow of then-President Victor Yanukovich.

The UN General Assembly later voted to proclaim the Russian annexation illegal.

The Origins and Evolution of ISIS in Libya
[Libya Herald] A report on the origins of ISIS in Libya concludes that Western policy must seek to get Libyan militias and local councils to take ownership of governance and justice issues, rather than merely directing them to fight ISIS or other jihadists. It adds that ISIS is a symptom‐rather than a cause‐of broader Libyan problems, especially weak governance.

The report, The Origins and Evolution of ISIS in Libya, by Jason Pack, Rhiannon Smith, Karim Mezran, examine ISIS’s pre-history, birth, expansion, consolidation, and dispersal in Libya, as well as the broader political context of the country. It offers advice and recommendations for how Western governments and militaries should approach jihadist actors globally.

For the past three decades, the 62-page report states, Libya has been a rich recruiting ground for global jihad. Investigating the precursors and then subsequent evolution of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and other murderous Moslem actors throughout this period presents actionable insights into how jihadist actors coalesce; how they interfere in post-conflict state building; the threats they pose to civilians, nascent economies, and external states; and finally, what complexities remain when their hold on territory has been eradicated, but their adherents have not been killed nor their ideology debunked.

Over the last three years, the report continues, ISIS has become the enemy of the vast majority of the Libyan people. By ignoring Libyan tribal norms‐killing too many people and brutally crushing resistance‐ISIS first lost the city of Derna in early 2015, and then later, its stronghold in the city of Sirte in late 2016.

This fits into a larger regional dynamic, whereby ISIS’s brutality has tended to backfire, while its administrative capacity has won it support. As such, ISIS initially thrived in vulnerable localities in Libya because it exploited local cleavages and because previous central governments were reluctant to devolve power to local authorities, the report says.

Surveying this history, the report concludes that Western policy must seek to get militias and local councils to take ownership of governance and justice issues, rather than merely directing them to fight ISIS or other jihadists.

True national reconciliation and inclusiveness in Libya, especially between formerly pro-Qadaffy actors and rebels, and between anti-Islamist and pro-Islamist actors, is required to end the cycle of statelessness and radicalization in Libya, the report states.

Significantly, this report sheds light on Libya’s constantly evolving position within the global jihadist networks connecting Afghanistan, Iraq, Europe, and North Africa. It is out of this milieu that Salman Abedi, the British-Libyan jacket wallah involved in the May 22, 2017, Manchester Arena attack, sprung. His father supported the al-Qaeda aligned Libyan Islamic Fighting Group in the 1990s, and it was a natural progression for Salman to transition from that milieu to ISIS, the report says.

As western governments address this constantly evolving threat, they must understand that there is no such thing as a purely military strategy to defeat ISIS in Libya. The group is a symptom‐rather than a cause‐of broader Libyan problems, especially weak governance.

The dysfunctional tyranny exercised by Libyan militias is at the heart of the country’s instability over the past five years and contributed to attracting ISIS. Therefore, the report explains, any anti-ISIS strategy for Libya cannot be based on counterterror efforts alone. International and Libyan policy must treat the root causes that made Libya’s governance vacuum an effective incubator for jihadist operations.

Anger grows in Parachinar after three attacks in six months
[DAWN] Members of the Shia community in Parachinar protested Monday as the corpse count from twin blasts three days earlier rose to 72, marking a grisly Eid for the town worst hit by militancy so far in 2017.

Officials confirmed that five more injured of Friday’s blasts died in hospital, which pushed the corpse count to 72. At least 10 others are said to be in precarious condition.

Dozens of protesters offered their Eid prayers wearing black armbands in the market in Parachinar, where the bombs tore through crowds of shoppers on Friday, local officials said.

"The corpse count from Friday's blasts has reached 69," local administration official Basir Khan Wazir told AFP. He said the local administration was trying to negotiate with the protesters.

Parachinar, capital of Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
, a mainly Shia area in the tribal belt, had already suffered two deadly kabooms in its markets this year.

It was the site of the first major attack in Pakistain in 2017, when a bomb killed 24 people in January in an attack claimed by the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi

Pakistain (TTP) led by Sheheryar Mehsud.

In March, a second attack in another market killed 22 people. The attack was claimed by the Jamaatul Ahrar
...A Pak Taliban splinter group that split off from the Mullah Fazlullah faction because it wasn't violent enough...
Friday's assault ─ also claimed by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi al-Alami ─ brought the town's loss of life due to terror attacks up to 115, more than any one city in Pakistain has suffered so far this year.

"We have been a constant target of the Taliban but the government has always failed us," Muzamil Hussain, an activist from Parachinar told AFP Friday.

Authorities have said that after the first two attacks, checkposts and barriers were set up around the city's markets.

"I don't understand how can someone drive a bomb-laden vehicle through all the checkposts of the military and other paramilitary troops and reach here, it simply isn't logical, and this is what we are protesting against," he said.

Iraq forces gain control of Faruq neighborhood in Old Mosul, central hospital
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iraqi forces on Monday seized control of al-Faruq district on the northwestern side of Old djinn-infested Mosul

Faruq is located on the opposite side of the historic Nuri Mosque, which was destroyed by ISIS last week. however, the Death Eater group still control the site of the mosque.

Meanwhile,
...back at the dirigible, Cynthia backed into the galley, the barbecue fork held in front of her.
Jack! she called. Where the hell are you?...

forces on Monday were searching neighborhoods of west Mosul they retook weeks ago after a surprise Death Eater attack on their rear that left several dead, officials said.

The attack, which was claimed by ISIS, sowed panic among residents who returned to live in the Tanak and Yarmuk neighborhoods of west Mosul.

A top commander in the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), which sent forces to fight the ISIS gunnies, said the attackers had infiltrated the area by blending in with returning displaced civilians.

"The group came with the displaced and settled in the Tanak district. They regrouped and launched counter-attacks," Staff Lieutenant General Abdulwahab al-Saadi told AFP.

"Yarmuk is being searched house to house," he said, adding that two groups of ISIS attackers were still believed to be in the area, which lies on the western edge of the city.

A CTS medic said the attack had caused several victims but he could not say how many.

"There are deaders who were killed by ISIS," the medic said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

He said 15 to 20 Death Eater fighters were also killed in the battle.

Iraqi forces, led by the CTS, have for a week been pressing a perilous assault into the Old City in central Mosul, the last pocket still controlled by the Death Eaters.

While the exact circumstances were unclear, Sunday night’s attack was described as a diversionary tactic by west Mosul "sleeper cells" to ease the pressure on the Old City, where the holy warriors appear to be on their last legs.

"The sleeper cells carried out a surprise attack against the security forces, in an attempt to ease the siege on the Old City," a local official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"Operations to flush out pockets controlled by ISIS are ongoing," he said.

Iraqi forces take over IS’s central hospital in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Federal Police forces took over Islamic State’s main hospital in Mosul’s Old City on Monday as operations near a total recapture of Iraq’s second largest city.

The service’s chief, Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat, said in statements that “Federal Police troops took over Daesh (Islamic State) main medical center in Bab al-Beed, and seized a large amount of medicines”. He said police expanded the scope of operations and opened new battle fronts in Bab Jadid area, and became 350 meters closer to a commercial area in Serjkhana.

ISIS turbans will come to an end within the next few days as government troops are combing the last areas still held by the hard boys.

"Only a small part remains in the city, specifically the Old City," Lieutenant General Abdul Ghani al-Assadi, commander of the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), said on Monday.

He added, "From a military perspective, ISIS is finished. It has lost its fighting spirit and its balance. We are making calls to them to surrender or die."

Assadi further noted that Iraqi army forces thwarted ISIS bully boys' offensive to return to neighborhoods outside the Old City late Sunday, stressing that Mosul will be liberated from the grip of Takfiri turbans "in very few days, God willing."

Commander of Nineveh Liberation Operation Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Yarallah also said forces with the CTS had captured al-Farouq neighborhood in western Mosul, and raised the national Iraqi flag over several buildings in the area.

Dozens feared dead after abandoned in Niger desert
[Al Jazeera] Dozens of people are feared dead after human traffickers abandoned them in Niger's northern desert without food or water, a senior local official said on Monday.

Fatoumi Boudou, the prefect of Niger's northern region of Bilma, told the AFP news agency that authorities on Sunday rescued 24 people who were part of a group of "70 people who had left in three vehicles from Agadez for Libya".

Agadez is a remote town in Niger on the edge of the Sahara desert that has become a major people-smuggling point.

The traffickers "abandoned them in the middle of the desert without food or water", Boudou said, adding that those rescued had spoken of several dead bodies without specifying a number.

But the Agadez-based Air Info website, citing a security source, said scores of bodies had been buried on Sunday by troops and locals.

A local radio station had said 52 dead bodies had been discovered by authorities on Sunday.

Does war kick innovation into overdrive - sure. Which came first, the chariot or the wheel? The church bell or the cannon? The telegraph or the internet? The war horse or the draft horse? The microprocessor or the loom?

#7  For me, the interesting part of the article comes near the end.

New generations of technology are needed to raise productivity. If the model that has been in place since before World War II continues, then another generation of entrepreneurs will take advantage of military research and development, deploy it, and announce how much they dislike government interference in their work. Selling products is important, but we need to understand the role that war plays in consumer products. For the pacifists who love technology, and the libertarians who love it at least as much, there is a deep irony at work.

Consider all the SJWs in the tech world who might not have a job without all that icky military spending.

#1  Mixed feelings about Army Rangers. I was on training staff at Quantico after tour in VN. And looking at 2nd tour. Hated it because I knew the Leadership of the US was misguided. No Cause except supporting the Corps. Always though Rangers were too proud of themselves and liked themselves too much.
But went up to see Ranger Demonstrations at Ranger installation in Lumpkin County in North Georgia Mountains.
Good young men. Watched them train and admired them.
Came away with a better understanding. It was me that was too proud. Remember TA-14 at Quantico and Camp Barrett. You keep getting better the longer you are in, it takes years.
You never stop. God bless them all. Attitude.

Revenge suspected in Tripoli murder of colonel and beautiful daughter in Tripoli
[Libya Herald] The murder of an army colonel and his daughter in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
yesterday was Dire Revenge for the death of a man from Wadi al- Shaati during a prison breakout there last February, a relative of the slain officer claims.
"Arrrr! I must have Dire Revenge™!"
Yesterday evening, Bashir al-Hadi al-Hasnawi, an army colonel from the Shatti area but who lived in semi-retirement in Tripoli, was killed along with his beautiful 20-year-old daughter as they drove off from their home in the capital’s Ain Zara district, not far from Salahadeen. The occupant of a car blocking the end of the road got out and shot at them with a Kalashnikov.
"Father! Look out!"
[bangettabangettabangetta!]

According to the member of Hasnawi’s family, the colonel was targeted because the killer had a grudge against the Hasawna tribe whom he blamed for his brother’s death at the time of the breakout from Wadi al-Shatti’s Gurda prison in February. The brother was said to have been one of those involved in attacking the police jail and freeing the prisoners ‐ allegedly mainly Islamists ‐ and was killed in subsequent shooting between prison guards and the attackers. Many of the guards are said to have been members of the Hasawna tribe.
[sulk]
"Friggin' Hasawnas! I'll moider da lot of 'em! An' dere beautiful daughters, too!"

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
contrary to some reports, Hasnawi had not been in Wadi al-Shatti at the time of the attack and not been working in the police-run prison there, the relative insisted, pointing out that his cousin had been an army colonel not a police colonel.
"There's a difference, y'know."
"He's just as dead."

"He had no enemies, and was very popular with the neighbours", the relative said. He added that the family blamed Islamists for the killing.
In Libya? Is there anything else?
Those who attacked the prison in February and those who had been held prisoner there had been Islamists, he said. His cousin, on the other hand, was not. He had supported the revolution and had been in Tripoli ever since, travelling south only when family affairs required it.
That explains it then.
It is reported that a man accused of the crime has been tossed in the calaboose
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
."Into th' paddy wagon wit' yez!"

Iraq
Six IS leaders, including Baghdadi aid, killed in coalition airstrike in Kirkuk
Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Six Islamic State leaders died Monday when warplanes from the U.S-led coalition pounded their convoy southwest of Kirkuk, a local source said.

The strike targeted the long convoy which was moving from Abassi region to the Hamreen Mountains, which falls between Kirkuk and neighboring Salahuddin province, said the source.

One of the six leaders killed was one with an Arab nationality who had been a close aide to Islamic State’s supreme leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the source revealed, adding that the strike destroyed 12 vehicles driven by the militants.

Bahrain's FM in about-face over Turkish base in Qatar
[Al Jazeera] Just over two weeks after stating that The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's military presence in Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
has no relation to an ongoing Gulf crisis, Bahrain's foreign minister appears to have performed a complete u-turn.

Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa on Monday accused Qatar of creating a "military escalation" in the regional diplomatic dispute, in an apparent reference to the long-planned deployment of Turkish troops in Qatar's capital, Doha, in recent days.

"The disagreement with Qatar is a political and security dispute and has never been military," the Bahraini foreign minister said on Twitter.

"But the deployment of foreign troops with their armoured vehicles is a military escalation for which Qatar will bear the consequences."

Yet, these remarks contradicted previous statements made by Khalifa during a visit to Turkey in June 10, three days after Turkey's parliament fast-tracked the approval of a 2016 agreement with Qatar that allowed troops to be deployed to a Turkish military base in the Gulf state.

Islamic State's last stand in Iraq: Who will liberate Hawija?
[RUDAW.NET] With the Islamic State's (ISIS) removal from Mosul imminent the militant's only real base of operations will be the city of Hawija, west of Kirkuk.

The militants have retained that enclave to date primarily because Baghdad and its American backer prioritized the Mosul operation. It's presently unclear which forces will remove them when the time comes.

“From what the Iraqi forces have said Hawija might be the last bit of Iraqi territory to be liberated,” Iraq analyst Joel Wing of Musings of Iraq, told Rudaw English. “After Mosul is finished the joint forces will go after Tal Afar then western Anbar, and then Hawija at the very end.”

Diyala police chief Jassem al-Saadi said in a statement that twelve IS militants in Mekheisa region, northeast of Baqubah, were bidding farewell to a comrade who was on his way for a suicide attack. Saadi said that the explosive belt on the bomber’s body went off to kill well-wishers instead.

Russia eliminated 99% of own chemical weapons: Moscow
[Iran Press TV] Russia says it has so far annihilated "99 percent of its chemical weapons" to meet the conditions specified in the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which it began implementing some 20 years ago.

Major General Valery Kapashin, the head of Russia's Federal Administration for the Safe Storage and Destruction of Chemical Weapons, announced the news, in an interview with the Interfax, published on Monday

He added that the remaining one percent, some 400 tons of weaponized chemicals, is currently kept at "at the last facility in operation to store and destroy the chemical weapons, in the Kizner village in the Udmurt region."

In an attempt to meet the conditions of the CWC, Russia paved a long way since late 2002 and early 2003, when it managed to destroy the first batch of chemicals, one percent, followed by another 20 percent in 2007.

In 2009, Moscow announced that it was ahead of the planned schedule, having got rid of 45 percent of its chemical arsenal. By the end of 2014, Moscow announced that it had destroyed 84.7 percent of its air-delivered chemical munitions.

Russian intelligence says Telegram app used in bombing Saint Petersburg metro
[AlAhram] Russia's FSB security agency on Monday said the Telegram messaging service was used by those behind the Saint Petersburg metro bombing, the latest salvo by authorities after they threatened to block the app.
That would be the work of Akbarzhon Jalilov, also spellt Akbarzhon Dzhalilov, the Kyrgyz-Russian sushi chef mechanic. Both ISIS and Al Nusra recruiters were arrested at the time.
"During the probe into the April 3 terrorist attack in the Saint Petersburg metro, the FSB received reliable information about the use of Telegram by the jacket wallah, his accomplices and their criminal mastermind abroad to conceal their criminal plans," the FSB said in a statement.

They used Telegram "at each stage of the preparation of this terrorist attack," it said.

Fifteen people were killed in the suicide bombing, which was claimed by the little-known Imam Shamil Battalion, a group suspected of links to Al-Qaeda.
Fifteen people were killed in the suicide kaboom, which was claimed by the little-known Imam Shamil Battalion, a group suspected of links to al-Qaeda.

Telegram is a free Russian-designed messaging app that lets people exchange messages, photos and videos in groups of up to 5,000. It has attracted about 100 million users since its launch in 2013.

But the service has drawn the ire of critics who say it can let criminals and gunnies communicate without fear of being tracked by police, pointing in particular to its use by Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
bully boys.

The FSB charged that "the members of the international terrorist organizations on Russian territory use Telegram".

The app is already under fire in Moscow after Russia's state communications watchdog on Friday threatened to ban it, saying the company behind the service had failed to submit company details for registration.

Telegram's secretive Russian chief executive, Pavel Durov, who has previously refused to bow to government regulation that would compromise the privacy of users, had called that threat "paradoxical" on one of his social media accounts.

He said it would force users, including "high-ranking Russian officials" to communicate via apps based in the United States like WhatsApp.

The 32-year-old had previously created Russia's popular VKontakte social media site, before founding Telegram in the United States.

Durov said in April that the app had "consistently defended our users' privacy" and "never made any deals with governments."

The app is one of several targeted in a legal crackdown by Russian authorities on the internet and on social media sites in particular.

Since January 1, internet companies have been required to store all users' personal data at data centres in Russia and provide it to the authorities on demand.

Draft legislation that has already secured initial backing in parliament would make it illegal for messaging services to have anonymous users.
