Machete-wielding man 'screaming Allahu Akbar' rampage in Hamburg supermarket
We'll probably never know his true motivation
[DailyMail] A man wielding a large kitchen knife killed one and wounded four others after storming into a supermarket in the German city of Hamburg.

The attacker is reported to have screamed 'Allahu Akbar' before running into the Edeka shop where he stabbed one person and slashed at four others while trying to flee.

He was pursued by passers-by who wrestled him to the ground and called the police, who later arrested him.

One officer said there was 'no valid information on the motive of the attacker' who has yet to be identified.

German daily Bild published a photo of the attacker in the back of a police car with a white, blood-soaked bag over his head.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
First LGBT Unit 'Created to Fight ISIS' in Syria. Its Name? The Queer Insurrection
If this works out, perhaps the US military can stand up some LGBT fighting units and see how things go. If they survive, great.
LGBT supporters are fighting back against the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) on the Syrian battlefield after three years of persecution in which their community suffered stonings, executions from rooftops and a deadly shooting at an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

A group of international volunteers fighting with Kurdish forces against ISIS in northern Syria have declared the first LGBT military unit created to battle the jihadi group. Its name? The Queer Insurrection and Liberation Army, or TQILA. The International Revolutionary People's Guerrilla Forces (IRPGF), an anarchist movement, announced the group's creation Monday.
TQILA? Wahahaha!
IRPGF is a unit in the International Freedom Battalion, a collection of foreign fighters who traveled to northern Syria to battle ISIS alongside the Kurdish militia known as the YPG, or People’s Protection Units. It was only set up in April, two months ahead of the final stage of a Kurdish-Arab offensive backed by the U.S.-led coalition to liberate the eastern Syrian city of Raqqa.

A statement posted by the group on Twitter said its members "seek to smash the gender binary and advance the women’s revolution as well as the broader gender and sexual revolution."

It remains unknown how many personnel will be involved in the unit, and how many are members of the LGBT community. Heval Rojhilat, spokesperson for TQILA, speaking to Newsweek, would not reveal numbers for security reasons.

"Many of our comrades are within the LGBT*QI+ community," Rojhilat says. "We are already fighting in Raqqa."

The group responded to a comment on Twitter, saying it pronounced the new unit’s name as "Tequila."

The group was formed as its members had "watched in horror as fascist and extremist forces around the world have attacked the Queer community and murdered countless of our community members citing that they are ’ill,’ ’sick,’ and ’unnatural.’"

The statement, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS, continues: "The images of gay men being thrown off roofs and stoned to death by Daesh was something we could not idly watch."

The statement ends with the slogan: "Shoot back! These faggots kill fascists!" The group’s logo is a black AK-47 machine gun on a pink background.

ISIS’s Sharia courts have declared homosexuality to be a capital offense, one deserving of severe and deadly punishment.

After Omar Mateen launched a shooting attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in June 2016, killing 49 people and pledging allegiance to the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in a 911 phone call, ISIS claimed responsibility. It said in a statement circulated by its Amaq news agency that he had "targeted a nightclub for homosexuals." Homosexuality is itself a taboo subject in Syria and Iraq.

Since its rise to prominence in Iraq in mid-2014, ISIS has released a slew of propaganda images and footage that show men accused of being homosexuals blindfolded and thrown from buildings in front of large crowds. If those thrown from buildings survived, they were then stoned to death by the spectators, who live in the group’s self-styled caliphate that straddles the Iraqi-Syrian border..

When suspected members of the community are captured, ISIS fighters went through their contact books to track down other people they believed to be gay, according to accounts of members of the LGBT community who lived under ISIS. Over three years, dozens of LGBT people were killed under ISIS’s rule, and many others fled.

In its statement, TQILA also accuses Christian conservatives of attacking the LGBT community.

But Kurdish forces treat women and men equally in its ranks, something not seen in many militaries across the world. They also have all-Kurdish women units and even recently set up training academies in the hope of creating the first all-Arab women unit in its forces.

The TQILA statement says there is a "revolution in Rojava," in reference to the semi-autonomous region in northern Syria that the Kurds hope to create. It will welcome all peoples and serve as a functioning democracy in a region more accustomed to theocracy and autocracy.

The Kurdish-Arab coalition, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, of which the YPG is a dominant player, is besieging ISIS in its de facto capital of Raqqa in eastern Syria. The SDF forces have captured more than a quarter of the city's neighborhoods, wrestling them back from ISIS despite the threat of suicide car bombs, sniper fire and booby traps.

If the jihadi group loses Raqqa, it would mark the end of its control of the largest population center in its possession after the fall of Mosul in northern Iraq earlier this month. The group still controls the eastern Syrian cities of Deir Ezzor and al-Mayadin.

It is unclear how deeply entrenched the LGBT unit is in the battle for Raqqa. But if the new battalion can help deal one of the final blows to the caliphate, it would be the sweetest of victories for members of the LGBT community who have suffered at the hands of ISIS. In that event, the group plans to mark the community where the symbols of ISIS once stood, Rojhilat says. "We will fly TQILA's flag, the IRPGF's flag and the rainbow flag!"

Pakistan's prime minister removed amid corruption probe
Pakistan's top court on Friday disqualified Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office after a damning corruption probe into his family wealth, cutting short his third stint in power and ordering a criminal investigation of his family.

In a surprise move, the court also dismissed Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, one of Sharif's closest allies who has been credited with steering the economy to its fastest pace of growth in a decade.

But Sharif's ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party, which has a majority in parliament, is expected to name a new prime minister to hold office until elections due next year.

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Sharif was not fit to hold office after an investigative panel alleged his family could not account for its vast wealth.

"He is no more eligible to be an honest member of the parliament, and he ceases to be holding the office of prime minister," Judge Ejaz Afzal Khan said in court.

Prior to the decision, several cabinet ministers, including Sharif's closest allies, said the ruling party would respect the Supreme Court's verdict.

"Go, Nawaz, Go," shouted supporters of the PTI opposition party who had gathered outside the court, and who jeered politicians from Sharif's party.

Iran rocket suffered 'catastrophic failure,' likely blew up, US official says

A much-hyped Tehran space launch turned out to be a dud, as the Iranian Simorgh rocket suffered a "catastrophic failure" shortly after liftoff on Thursday and likely blew up before it reached space, two U.S. officials told Fox News.

On Thursday, U.S. Strategic Command, which monitors launches around the world, could only confirm a satellite was not deployed from the rocket. But fresh intelligence assessments on Friday confirmed yet another failure by the Islamic Republic in its mission to place an operational satellite into orbit --something Tehran has never done before, despite repeated attempts over the past few years.

Officials have long been concerned the technology used to put a satellite into space could also be repurposed to make a long-range ballistic missile capable of one day potentially hitting the U.S. The Simorgh rocket is based on a North Korean design.

Iran's state media on Thursday claimed the launch was successful, but U.S. spy agencies quickly determined that assessment was more propaganda than fact.

Iran has successfully launched its domestically-manufactured Simorgh carrier, whose mission is to put Iranian satellites into the orbit pic.twitter.com/WVZog8i8o7
‐ Press TV (@PressTV) July 27, 2017

But even though it failed, Iran's attempted rocket launch succeeded in violating United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

Critics of the UN resolution -- which went into effect days after the landmark Iran nuclear agreement two years ago -- say the language is purposefully weak, however, and does not forbid Iran from carrying out such tests. The resolution states Iran is merely "called upon" not to conduct such rocket and missile tests.

"We would consider that a violation of UNSCR 2231," Nauert said flatly. "We consider that to be continued ballistic missile development."

Kaboom! Russian Drone With Thermite Grenade Blows Up a Billion Dollars of Ukranian Ammo
[PopularMechanics] A drone carrying a grenade infiltrated an ammunition dump in Ukraine, setting off an explosion that caused an astounding billion dollars worth of damage. The incident points to the growing use of drones in wartime, particularly off the shelf civilian products harnessed to conduct sabotage and other attacks.
The image of a pencil vs. a pressurized pen comes to mind.
Ukraine's domestic intelligence service, the SBU, believes that a drone carrying a Russian thermite hand grenade caused a series of titanic explosions at Balakliya, a military base in Eastern Ukraine. Amateur video of the incident posted on YouTube shows a raging fire spewing out of control artillery rockets, and an explosion and shockwave that sent civilians nearby reeling.

One person was killed in the attack and five were injured.

The drone is believed to have carried a ZMG-1 thermite grenade. Thermite, a combination of iron oxide (rust) and aluminum powder. The stuff burns extremely hot and easily could have gotten through wooden crates to detonate the munitions inside. The ammo dump is just 60 miles from the Russian/Ukrainian border, where fighting recently took place.

According to PM contributor David Hambling writing at Scout Warrior, it's not the first time military bases in Ukraine have been hit by drones. A similar attempt to blow up the Balakliya base took place in December 2015, when drones dropped 14 grenades. The fires were extinguished by Ukrainian servicemen, and one grenade, a ZMG-1, was recovered.
I'm also sort of curious if folks are learning from these incidents.
In October 2015, an attack on an ammunition depot at Svatovo destroyed 3,000 tons of explosives and damaged 1,700 nearby homes. Two other attacks on ammo dumps took place in February, and another facility was attacked in March.

Guerrilla groups, terrorists, and perhaps even governments worldwide have rapidly weaponized consumer drones, effectively turning hobbyist devices into lethal weapons capable of killing. In 2016, two French Special Forces soldiers were injured and two Kurdish fighters were killed by an exploding ISIS drone. ISIS has conducted numerous drone attacks during the Mosul campaign and terrorism experts fear weaponized drones could spread outside conflict zones.

Browder: '100 Percent Certainty' Russian Intel Knew About Trump Tower Meeting, Planned in Advance
[PJ] WASHINGTON -- The leading champion of the Magnitsky Act human rights sanctions on Russia told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday that he has zero doubt Russian intelligence knew beforehand about a meeting with the Trump campaign and plotted in advance to try to turn the anti-sanctions effort to their advantage.

Hermitage Capital Management CEO Bill Browder's lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, discovered massive Russian government fraud that led to Magnitsky's imprisonment, torture, and 2009 death. After Congress passed the sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for Magnitsky's death, the Kremlin retaliated by blocking the adoption of Russian children in the U.S.

#1  In the world of intelligence damage assessments, the evidence at hand would clearly implicate the Soviets Russians. One could hardly assume otherwise.

The greater question however, was USI (US Intelligence) aware of the Veselnitskaya meet. If not.... why not? One must likewise assume USI was at least as witting as the Russians. After all, it is our swamp, our turf.

The obvious follow-up question (rhetorical of course), why was the Trump campaign not provided a 'heads up.'

#4  There are those who now claim that the organization that supplied the Democrats with the crazy allegations against Trump also were working both sides, ie the Dems and the Russians, and the allegations against Trump were invented by Russian intelligence. Also that same organization seems to have been behind the meeting with Trump Jr.
They conclude that it was the Clinton campaign that colluded with the Russians to create dirt against Trump through both of these things, once Trump got the nomination. The invitation to the meeting was phrased (peculiarly) to assert that it was the Trump campaign hoping to collude.
The Russian aim, it is said, was to weaken the US government no matter who won. That seems to be the Democrat's goal today as well.

Intelligence chairman accuses Soetoro aides of hundreds of unmasking requests
[The Hill] The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee is accusing top political aides of President Obama of making hundreds of requests during the 2016 presidential race to unmask the names of Americans in intelligence reports, including Trump transition officials.

Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), in a letter to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, said the requests were made without specific justifications on why the information was needed.

"We have found evidence that current and former government officials had easy access to U.S. person information and that it is possible that they used this information to achieve partisan political purposes, including the selective, anonymous leaking of such information," Nunes wrote in the letter to Coats.
The letter was provided to The Hill from a source in the intelligence community.

In March, Nunes disclosed that he had seen data suggesting Trump campaign and transition officials were having their names unmasked by departing officials in the Obama White House.

National Security Adviser Susan Rice and CIA Director John Brennan have acknowledged making such requests though they insisted the requests were for legitimate work reasons.

Nunes recused himself from his committee’s work on its investigation over Russia’s meddling in the 2016 campaign after a controversy over his charges about Obama-era unmasking.

" His 2004 campaign for the Senate, against Barack Obama, received widespread media attention for the disclosure of sealed custody documents stemming from his divorce from actress Jeri Ryan. The unsealing of those documents, detailing allegations that Ryan had pressured his wife to perform sexual acts in public, led to Ryan's withdrawal from the campaign."

#6  I'll go even further - the freeing up regarding access in 2016 was a 'dilution effort', or to use another phrase, deepening the pool of suspects.

ICE chief wants to slap smuggling charges on leaders of sanctuary cities
[Wash Times] The country’s top immigration enforcement officer says he is looking into charging sanctuary city leaders with violating federal anti-smuggling laws because he is fed up with local officials putting their communities and his officers at risk by releasing illegal immigrants from jail.

Thomas Homan, the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also told Americans to expect more work site enforcement targeting unscrupulous employers and more 287(g) agreements with willing police and sheriff’s departments that want to help get illegal immigrants off their streets. Eventually, he said, ICE will break the deportation records of 409,849 migrants set in 2012 under President Obama.

"I think 409,000 is a stretch this year, but if [the Justice Department] keeps going in the direction they’re going in, if we continue to expand our operational footprint, I think we’re going to get there," he told The Washington Times. "Our interior arrests will go up. They’re going to top last year’s for sure."

Mr. Homan is the spear tip of President Trump’s effort to step up immigration enforcement -- perhaps the largest swing in attitude for any agency in government from the last administration to the current one.

Agents and officers have been unshackled from the limits imposed by Mr. Obama, whose rules restricted arrests to less than 20 percent of the estimated illegal immigrant population.

Good for ICE. I noticed they didn't release this info through WAPO. Hard telling what would been printed if they did.

Algeria arrests jihadist linked to Paris kosher market terrorist
More on this story from yesterday.
[IsraelTimes] Security forces said to foil plot by jihadists with ties to criminal mastermind of deadly 2015 attack on Hyper Cacher

Algerian security forces have foiled a terror plot criminal masterminded by a terrorist with links to La Belle France-based jihadist Amedy Coulibaly and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group, the al-Khabar daily reported Thursday.

Citing "well-placed security sources," the newspaper said early results of an investigation "show a strong link between the head of the terrorist cell" and Coulibaly, who in 2015 killed a municipal police officer then four hostages in a Hyper Cacher kosher supermarket in Gay Paree before being killed.

The alleged head of the Algerian cell, Mohammed Yacine Aknouche, was sentenced by a French court in 2004 to eight years in prison for taking part in a failed plan to blow up a Christmas market in the eastern city of Strasbourg.

The French-Algerian dual national was placed in durance vile

Tuesday along with a minor and a third person whose identity has not been revealed, in Ain Tagourait, 60 kilometers (40 miles) west of Algiers, al-Khabar said.

During a raid on Aknouche’s apartment, security forces found "dozens of photos" of places he was hoping to attack, including army installations, it said.

Algerian security forces are "trying to determine the type of relationship" between Aknouche and Coulibaly after discovering electronic conversations between the two men, al-Khabar said.

It said the investigation had uncovered a link between Aknouche and "murderous attacks in European countries... committed by ISIS", an Arabic acronym for IS.

Algerian authorities declined to give AFP further details.

Imran Khan and a new dawn for Pakistan
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The fallout from the Panama Papers leak from 2016 has had reverberations around the world. But perhaps nowhere will the consequences be as strong and as positive as in Pakistain.

Corruption is probably the biggest problem in Pakistain. It has been a feature of virtually all since Pakistain’s founding, both civilian and military. And it is one of the main drivers for all the other problems Pakistain is facing: from a tanking economy, a ruined infrastructure and a fractured society in which terrorism and radical ideologies thrive.

Corruption may not sound as dramatic as terrorism, but terrorism festers in dysfunctional, poorly managed societies or fringes of societies. And corruption in Pakistain has rendered the entire country dysfunctional and unjust.

a suspect involved in the Aug 8, 2016, Quetta carnage in which at least 74 people, mostly lawyers, had bit the dust.

Deputy Inspector General of police’s Counter Terrorism Department Aitzaz Goraya told a three-judge bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa that besides nabbing Saeed Badini, police were also conducting raids with the help of intelligence agencies to arrest two runaways. Five of the Lions of Islam involved in the incident had already been killed in an encounter, he said.

The Balochistan government has already announced a head money of Rs2 million each for the attackers, whereas posters with their pictures on them have also been placed in different areas of Quetta.

The Supreme Court had taken up a follow-up case on a critical report by one-man inquiry commission of Justice Qazi Faez Isa on the Aug 8 suicide kaboom at Quetta’s Civil Hospital. In the report, the commission stressed the need for proscribing terrorist organizations without any delay by enforcing the Anti-Terrorism Act in letter and spirit.

2 Abu Sayyaf nabbed in Tawi-Tawi
[SUNSTAR.PH] TROOPS of the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi have arrested two Abu Sayyaf bandits involved in a series of robbery in Tawi-Tawi, a military official announced on Thursday, July 27.

Brigadier General Custodio Parcon, Jr. , Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi commander, identified the arrested suspects as Merson Arak Garim and Rustom Garim, both members of the Abu Sayyaf Group, based in Panglima Sugala town.

Parcon said the two suspects were arrested while the Marine Battalion Landing Team (MLBT)-Zamboanga Peninsula (Western Mindanao) troops were on combat operations around 5:30 a. m. , Wednesday, July 26, in the village of Batu-Batu, Panglima Sugala, Tawi-Tawi.

Parcon said the suspects’ arrest came after the residents have reported the presence of seven Abu Sayyaf bandits and the robbery by the group in the village of Batu-Batu. Parcon said the troops seized an M-16 (rifle) loaded with ammunition from the two suspects.

He said the Abu Sayyaf bandits resorted to robbery to sustain themselves, victimizing farmers in far-flung areas like in the village of Balimbing, Panglima Sugala since the marine troops intensified the conduct of seaborne patrols.

On Monday, July 24, the bandits robbed a certain Mansiar, a tenant of a coconut farm and threatened to kill its owner, Reny Flores, a brother of a soldier assigned with the MBLT-Zamboanga Peninsula.

Parcon said records showed the mayor of Panglima Sugala has ordered the Garims to leave the town but they refused and has established a temporary harbor site in the village of Batu-Batu in that municipality.

The Garims were turned over to the custody of the police in Panglima Sugala town. The arrest of the Garims has brought to 72 Abu Sayyaf bandits apprehended by the government troops as of Wednesday in Western Mindanao.

Sarah Palin's Lawyers want NYTimes emails
[NBC-2] NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Attorneys for Sarah Palin want to get the private communications of more than 20 journalists at the New York Times as part of the former Republican vice presidential nominee's defamation lawsuit against the newspaper.

Documents filed Wednesday in a New York federal court detailed the efforts by Palin's legal team to obtain the internal communications of the Times staffers.

Palin sued the New York Times last month over an editorial that inaccurately accused her of "political incitement" prior to the 2011 shooting that killed six people and left former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords severely wounded. She is seeking at least $75,000 in damages.

Palin's lawyers are seeking all emails and text messages concerning her dating back to January 8, 2011, the day of the shooting. The subpoenas target 23 journalists at the Times

Nisar to give up NA seat, ministry once Panamagate verdict is announced
[DAWN] Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar finally held his much-awaited presser on Thursday to announce that he would leave his ministry and the National Assembly the day the Panamagate verdict was announced.

Clarifying that he was not taking any extreme measure at the moment, "owing to the pressure of friends", Nisar said he would resign nonetheless from the ministry and the National Assembly on the day the Supreme Court announces the Panamagate verdict -- "be it for the party or against it."

"My heart is no longer in politics," he said.

At the start of the presser, Nisar remarked that it was going to be his "most difficult" presser.

In his nearly 45-minute long speech, the interior minister talked about his 33-year association with the party, conspiracies within the ruling PML-N, and his disillusionment with politics.

He concluded with some sound parting advice to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...

Charsadda district police chief Khalid Suhial told Dawn that a joint team of police and the Counter Terrorism Department had been formed to investigate the case.

JUI-F leaders termed the incident assassination'>assassination. They said Maulana Haqqani was a non-controversial person and had no enmity.

The holy man’s disciples, Learned Elders of Islam and local people rushed to the seminary after the murder and held a protest demonstration. They blocked the Shabqaddar-Matta road. Police reopened the road after negotiations with the mourners.

Police had deployed additional personnel to control the situation.

Rooshun army receives upgraded T-73B3s
Not mentioned in the article is that all upgraded T-72B2 and up have thermal imaging fire control systems.
[DefenceBlog] Russia’s Ministry of Defence has received into service a new batch of the improved T-72B3 main battle tanks.

That was reported by Russian tank manufacturer UralVagonZavod (UVZ) .

According to the UVZ,the Russian Army has received the next batch of upgraded T-72B3 main battle tanks (MBTs) with additional armor protection.

Modernization of the T-72B to the T-72B3 began in 2010 and this process also includes improving the tank’s firepower by installing a new fire control system; overhauling each of these old tanks and replacing their outdated engines.

The new version of T-72B3 is fitted with armour plates on each side at the front of the hull and wire cage armour at the rear part to increase protection of the engine compartment against RPG (Rocket-Propelled Grenade) threats. The developers took into account the experience of fighting in Ukraine, Georgia and Syria.

According to armyrecognition.com, the armour of the turret is also upgraded with a new armour package including new generation of ERA (Explosive Reactive Armour) mounted on each side of the turret, while the rear part of the turret is fitted with wire cage armour similar to the system used to protect the rear part of the hull.

Egypt: 70 people get 7-25 years for post-coup violence
[AA.TR] An Egyptian military court on Thursday handed down sentences ranging from seven to 25 years to 70 civilians convicted of committing violence after the 2013 military coup, according to a lawyer for the defendants.

"The military court in Asyut Governorship [south] sentenced 58 civilians to life in prison after being convicted of storming and burning the Magaga Police Station in Minya Governorship," effectively giving them a 25-year sentence, said Khaled al-Koumi, a member of the defendants’ defense team.

"The same court sentenced five defendants to 15 years in prison, five to 10 years, and two others to seven years," he added.

He also pointed out that Thursday’s verdicts are preliminary and can be appealed before the same court within 60 days.
And then appealed again at the next level, and so forth. Surely Christian Purgatory was modelled on this Muslim reality.
Egypt was roiled by violence and unrest after the military deposed Mohammed Morsi, the country's first freely elected president, in a 2013 coup.

Syrian forces continue advance in Deir Ezzor
[ARA News] The Syrian army forces on Thursday made new gains in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor after heavy clashes with Islamic State’s (ISIS) fighters.

The pro-Assad troops took over several villages in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor and have reached the strategic al-Sukhna town in the province.

“The army has reached the al-Sukhna suburb in western Deir ez-Zor after bombing major ISIS positions in the area,” local media activist Anwar Abdulbari told ARA News.

Dozens of ISIS militants were reported dead in Thursday’s clashes.

Al-Sukhna is a key defence line for ISIS militants in Deir ez-Zor province, near the border with Iraq.

“ISIS is trying to fortify the central city of Deir ez-Zor from the southwest, using trenches and laying hundreds of landmines to impede the Syrian army progress,” Abdulbari reported.

In the meantime, the ISIS media centre in Raqqa reported that their fighters have carried out three suicide attacks south of the province, targeting Syrian government forces. At least 12 Syrian soldiers were reportedly killed in the attack.

Syrian forces advance in Homs

[AlManar] Syrian army forces are nearing the last major town held by ISIL terrorists in Homs province, a military source said on Thursday.

The source said combat operations would accelerate towards the town of al-Sukhna, some 50 km from the administrative frontier of Deir Ezzor province, where ISIL has redeployed many fighters after losing ground in Syria and Iraq.

“Capturing al-Sukhna means opening the door and path for forces to move to Deir Ezzor directly,” the source told Reuters, adding that the military had captured positions 8 km southwest of the town on Wednesday evening.

ISIL is losing ground fast in Syria to separate campaigns waged by the Russian-backed Syrian government on the one hand, and to U.S.-backed Kurdish forces and their allies on the other.

Army forces, backed by allied forces, have also been advancing against ISIL in Hama province and in southern areas of Raqqa province.

Syrian Army forces have been approaching al-Sukhna gradually since capturing the ancient city of Palmyra, some 50 km away, in March.

“It is natural that combat operations escalate in this direction and take on a stronger and faster nature,” the source said, adding that ISIL had concentrated forces in al-Sukhna.

Iraqi air force smokes 10 ISIS Bad Guys in Mosul

Tal Afar (IraqiNews.com) Ten Islamic State militants were killed as an airstrike targeted an alternative headquarters, west of Mosul, a local source from Nineveh province said.

“An airstrike targeted an IS alternative headquarters at the outskirts of Tal Afar town, west of Mosul, killing at least ten militants,” the source, who preferred anonymity, told AlSumaria News. “The bodies were taken to the group’s medical centers.”

The source added that the group previously evacuated its main headquarters and moved to alternative ones to avoid airstrikes.

News reports said, earlier this week, that the group carried out emergency evacuations over the night at many of its main headquarters in the town over growing doubts on the people’s cooperation with security services. Other reports indicated huge explosion that occurred at a field clinic, where IS injured militants are treated in the town, which urged the group to block the main roads.

Iraqi Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that a date has been set for the town invasion, however, it will not be declared to maintain the secrecy of the intended operations.

During a weekly press briefing on Tuesday, Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi said a special plan has been drawn to invade Tal Afar.

Col. Ryan Dillon, spokesperson of the U.S.-led coalition against IS, was previously quoted as saying that Tal Afar will be the next target of operations after victory was declared in Mosul.

Tal Afar is one of the important strongholds still held by IS in Nineveh since August 2014.

Pro-militant Islamic scholar blames Al-Qaeda for Idlib infighting
[ALMASDARNEWS] Syrian-born pro-Islamist religious scholar, Abdul Razzaq al-Mahdi, has laid "the buck of the responsibility" for the ongoing inter-rebel infighting in Idlib Governorate on the al-Qaeda-linked Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group.

In a recent interview with Bilal Abdul Kareem’s On the Ground News media outlet, Abdul Razzaq al-Mahdi expressed disappointment with HTS in its behavior to other bully boy groups in Idlib. He pointed-out a hypocrisy in what the jihadist group’s publicly stated intentions are and the means they use to achieve them.

According to the religious scholar "they [HTS] justify their stance and say they want a united front ... [however] they took this way called taghalab (to overcome with force)."

Abdul Razzaq al-Mahdi went on to add that "they [HTS] say there are instructions not to shed blood, but actually there is [bloodshed], many people get killed."

Zambia: Lungu's Authoritarianism Now Turns to Opponents Within
[All Africa] The ruling Patriotic Front's expulsion of one of its founding members paves the way for President Lungu to be its presidential candidate. But they'd be wrong to think they've seen the end of Chishimba Kambwili.

Last week, Chishimba Kambwili MP, an ambitious firebrand
...firebrands are noted more for audio volume and the quantity of spittle generated than for any actual logic in their arguments...
and possible presidential aspirant, was expelled from the ruling Patriotic Front (PF), a party he had helped found 16 years previously.

PF Secretary-General Davies Mwila claimed that the Central Committee's 22 July decision to dismiss the former Information Minister followed his covert attempts to destabilise the party. He dared Kambwili not to challenge his dismissal in court but rather to test his popularity in a by-election.

At the time of publication, however, unconfirmed reports in the local press suggest Kambwili has begun a legal challenge. If he were to win, he would keep his parliamentary seat, either on the PF ticket or as an independent if he chose to resign from the party. If he were to lose, a by-election would be held within 90 days of the vacancy.

Before his dismissal, Kambwili, 48, had been a party stalwart. A former scrap metal dealer, he was a founding member of the PF in 2001 and one of party leader Michael Sata's close associates. In 2006, he was elected on a PF ticket as the MP for Roan, an urban constituency on the politically-important industrial Copperbelt. In recent years, he has cultivated a reputation for being outspoken, winning him considerable popularity in the urban centres of the capital Lusaka and on the Copperbelt.

Kambwili recently indicated that he would consider running for the presidency in 2021. President Edgar Lungu has also unexpectedly declared his intention to seek another term in office. It was likely the incumbent's ambitions that led to his former colleague's expulsion, though the president would be wrong to think the matter is now settled.

Kim Jong-nam murder suspects to plead not guilty
[Al Jazeera] Two women accused of poisoning the estranged half-brother of North Korea's ruler are expected to plead innocent when they appear in a Malaysian court on Friday, their lawyers said.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 29, from Vietnam are suspected of smearing Kim Jong-nam's face with the banned VX nerve agent at a crowded airport terminal in Kuala Lumpur on February 13.

The women, who face the death penalty if convicted, say they were duped into thinking they were playing a harmless prank for a hidden-camera show.

Venezuela bans protests against new Assembly vote
[AA.TR] Protests that could "affect" the controversial Constituent Assembly vote this weekend will be banned, the Venezuelan government announced Thursday.

"National meetings and demonstrations, concentrations of people and any similar acts that may disturb or affect the normal development of the electoral process are prohibited throughout the country," Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said at a news conference in Caracas.

Reverol said the measure would be applied from midnight Friday until Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Violators will be "punished with imprisonment for 5 to 10 years," Reverol warned.

The protest ban was issued on the second of a two-day national strike organized by the opposition in an attempt to thwart President Nicolas Maduro’s plans to elect a Constituent Assembly that would have the power to rewrite the Constitution.

Opposition parties have said the vote on the Constituent Assembly is a "fraud" to establish a "dictatorship" and planned massive marches in Caracas for Friday.

One congressman and opposition leader said the protest ban would not prevent Venezuelans from occupying the streets this weekend.

"The dictatorship says we can’t protest from tomorrow. So? Tomorrow we will no longer take the streets in Caracas but in all Venezuela!", Guevara wrote on Twitter, just minutes after Reverol’s speech.

CII’s opinion sought on petition against death by hanging

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
High Court bench on Tuesday directed the Council of Islamic Ideology and attorney general for Pakistain to respond to a petition seeking its orders for the government to introduce a less painful mode of execution than hanging.

Justice Lal Jan Khattak and Justice Abdul Shakoor extended a stay order against the execution of a death row prisoner, Jan Bahadur, until the disposal of his petition.

The bench asked the CII to explain its viewpoint on the petitioner’s prayer in light of Islamic injunctions.

It also directed that the attorney general should explain the legal position on the points raised by the petitioner.

Kept at the Haripur Central Prison, the petitioner has requested the high court to declare death by hanging un-Islamic and unconstitutional saying it is painful and against human values.

The petitioner has petitioned a withdrawal of his earlier petition , insisting that he ' later realized the whole point' of the gallows thing, and that he awaits the good noose with bated breath.

Judges at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) overruled the General Court’s view of 2014 that the Council of the European Union, the 28-nation grouping, had insufficient evidence to maintain asset freezes and travel bans on Hamas.

The lower court had found that the listing was based on media and internet reports rather than decisions by a "competent authority". But the ECJ said such decisions were not required for groups to stay on the list, only for their initial listing.

Egypt tells Hafter it supports his agreement with Serraj; Gatrani concurs
[Libya Herald] Egypt has praised the Faiez Serraj and Khalifa Hafter talks held in Gay Paree yesterday, saying that the proposed plan of action was the right way of moving Libya forward.

The comments came as Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shoukry held discussions today with Hafter in Gay Paree. Shoukry told him that Egypt backed the statement issued yesterday, which agreed on a ceasefire, elections and the Skhirat accord.

He said it contained all the right ideas to support Libya as it transitions towards addressing economic and social problems, fighting terrorism and restoring stability.

According to Egyptian foreign ministry front man Ahmed Abu Zeid, Shoukry insisted that Libya remained one of his priorities but the country still needed to strengthen its state institutions, particularly the army. He also said that Hafter thanked Egypt for its work in encouraging dialogue and in finding a political solution, not a military one.

Zimbabwe’s first lady dares husband to name successor
[AA.TR] Zim-bob-we’s First Lady Grace Mugabe Thursday openly challenged her 93-year old husband to name his successor.

Octogenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
last month was also challenged by War Veterans Minister Tshinga Dube to name his successor in order to "boost investor confidence".

But now, in a surprising turn of events, his wife, Grace, has brought back the subject, openly doing so while she addressed the meeting of the ruling party’s women wing at the party headquarters in the capital Harare.

"There is nothing wrong with President Mugabe naming his successor; the move will enable all members of the party to rally behind one candidate," the Zim-bob-wean First Lady said in her address to the Women’s League.

Two factions are battling to succeed Mugabe in his Zanu-PF party, one reportedly led by one of Mugabe’s deputies, Emerson Mnangagwa. The other one is also allegedly led by the country’s first lady.

For Mugabe, the first lady said, naming of his successor would not be a new phenomenon as "this has been a trend in other countries".

Meanwhile,

she (Grace) called for the amendment of Article 7.1.b of the Zanu-PF constitution to restore the provision that stipulates that one of the two vice presidents and second secretary of the party shall be a woman.

Nigeria: Oil corporation confirms Boko Haram kidnapping
[AA.TR] Nigeria’s state-owned oil corporation on Thursday confirmed the abduction of several of its workers in the restive northeast by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, saying their whereabouts remain unknown.

The confirmation comes two days after Boko Haram fighters ambushed the workers in the Gubio area, reportedly killing several of them, including at least nine soldiers who the army says were on a rescue mission.

Local news media are reporting the killing of some 48 persons in the ambush, including soldiers, member of a local vigilante group, and the oil workers, whose bodies they say were brought to a government hospital in Maiduguri, Borno’s capital.

There was no official confirmation of the corpse count outside the nine the army confirmed late Wednesday.

"We're gladdened by reports of the rescue of some of the victims. We however await official confirmation from military authorities," Petroleum Minister and Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. (NNPC) head Ibe Kachikwu told a news briefing on Thursday in the capital Abuja.

127 Palestinians injured in Al-Aqsa clashes
[AA.TR] At least 127 Paleostinians were maimed in festivities between Israeli forces and Paleostinian worshippers returning to Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque on Thursday, healthcare workers said Thursday evening.

The injured including 41 injured by rubber bullets, 86 suffering from tear gas inhalation, and at least 15 fractures, the Paleostinian Red Islamic Thingy told Anadolu Agency. Some 21 were transferred to hospitals in Jerusalem, it added.

Moslems’ celebratory return to Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque turned sour Thursday afternoon when festivities abruptly broke out between Israeli forces and young Paleostinians.

The Paleostinians, jubilant to return after nearly two weeks of protesting new Israeli security measures, entered through the Bab Hutta gate to the holy site, but those already inside began throwing stones after they heard the sound of stun grenades from the pathway up to the gate.

Despite the mosque loudspeakers urging people to retreat and pray, many continued clashing with Israeli forces, a dozen of whom advanced into the compound to disperse the crowds.

Chaos Erupts At City Hall Hearing For Proposed Gun Bill
[BALTIMORE.CBSLOCAL] Chaos erupted Tuesday at a Baltimore City Hall hearing for a proposed mandatory one-year sentence for possession of an illegal handgun.

It took just minutes for rising tensions to overflow.

Council members had issued several warnings to unruly attendees, but police were called to move in as activists clashed with council members, and people pushed back.

It ended with two arrests and a lot of upset people.

The Baltimore Police Department says a 29-year-old and a 27-year-old were locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
and will face charges.

At least one person was injured as police pulled people from the room, and an ambulance was called to the scene. Police say the 27-year-old who was arrested complained of chest pains after being arrested. He has been transported to a local hospital for treatment.

After all of Tuesday’s events, council members voted through an amended gun bill by a 5-2 vote, moving it to the next round.

City officials say they’re trying to end the slow motion massacre on the streets of Baltimore by putting a gun law back on the books that says those found guilty of carrying an illegal gun will be given a mandatory year-long sentence.

"To say this is going to make a difference, I hope so," says councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke. "I hope it will, because we have the votes here."

Council member Brandon Scott, of the 2nd district, says he’s against the bill in any form.

"The amendments make the bill easier to stomach, it still doesn’t change the fact that I disagree with the bill in its entirety and its principles of mandatory minimums," he says.

One of the staunchest supporters of the bill says he’s not a fan of the amendments, but he was willing to compromise in order to get closer to the goal.

Tripoli must be free of all unauthorised weapons by Sunday says PG commander
[Libya Herald] No unauthorised weapons will be permitted in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
from Sunday the Presidential Guard commander has decreed after a high-level meeting on security in the capital.

Colonel Najmi Ramadan Khair al-Nakua said that all light, medium and heavy weapons would be banned from entering the capital.

His announcement came after a long meeting yesterday involving the Presidency Council’s (PC) defence and interior ministries as well as the Tripoli Joint Operations Security room. The gathering was seeking to drawn up a security plan for the capital.

It is unclear if any of the commanders of the often heavily-armed militias which support the PC were present at the meeting or had been consulted beforehand.

The six-day timeframe would seem ambitious if not indeed unrealistic if there has been no prior agreement with the militias. Nor is it clear that the police and the Presidential Guard are sufficiently strong in both numbers and weaponry to take over city-wide security.

Nakua also appealed to foreign diplomatic missions to return to Tripoli from which most withdrew in 2014 after the Libya Dawn

The militants sneaked late on Wednesday into Chechi village in Daquq town and stormed a house there, a source from the Kurdish security forces Asayish told Shafaq News on Thursday.

The militants killed four persons, including two women, and abducted four others from the family living in the same house, the source added.

Islamic State has executed hundreds of civilians and security members since it took over large areas in Iraq to proclaim a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate”. The executions of the victims were mainly blamed over accusations of collaboration with the Iraqi security authorities or for attempting to flee areas under its control.

Kirkuk has a mixed population of Kurds, Turkmens and Arabs. The southern and western regions in the province have been under IS control since June 2014.

IS holds pivotal regions that link between each of Diyala, Salahuddin and Kirkuk, posing threats to the liberated regions.

Several anonymous attacks against IS members have been reported over the past months since Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, launched a campaign to retake areas occupied by IS militants.

Iraqi kop arrested for helping ISIS

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A police officer was arrested on Thursday on charges of smuggling the families of Islamic State (IS) elements from Nineveh governorate to Salahuddin governorate, the Ministry of Interior said.

“The arrest was based on intelligence information as security forces ambushed the police officer on a road lining between Baiji and Tikrit cities while he was smuggling families of the terrorists,” the ministry added in a statement.

The suspect was referred to investigation bodies for questioning and confessed to working with the IS terror group exploiting his position, the statement added.

Since Iraqi forces launched offensives last year to recapture areas held by the Islamic State, occasional news reports emerged quoting local officials and parliamentarians speaking about corrupt security members setting militants free in return for money.

Earlier today. Anbar’s local council blamed recurrent breaches by IS militants of the province’s security on corruption within security bodies besides what it described as the infiltration of paramilitary troops fighting the group alongside the government.

The United Nations had recently warned against “collective punishments” of civilians believed to have links with IS members. Authorities in Mosul had unveiled plans to isolate those families and send them to rehabilitation camps.

ISIS mutilates 23 in Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) The Islamic State has cut the ears of 23 of its elements over charges of “cowardice” and leaving the fighting fronts, Alsumaria News reported on Thursday.

A local source told Alsumaria that a judge of the militant group’s so-called sharia court issued a decision to cut the ears of 23 IS elements who fled the battles west of Nineveh governorate, noting that the punished elements were local residents.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added that the group executed the judgment in a court in the town of Tal Afar (55km west of Nineveh). The group cut the upper part of the elements’ ears before taking them to prison.

Tal Afar, held by IS since 2014, has become the group’s most outstanding haven in Nineveh after militants lost their largest bastion, Mosul, to Iraqi forces earlier this month.

Since Iraqi government forces launched offensives to retake areas held by IS in 2014, the group has reportedly imposed various punishments on members whom they believed were delinquent on the battlefield.

Earlier this month, the Iraqi government declared victory over IS in Mosul, ending nearly nine months of battles, and said recently that Tal Afar would be the next target.

German court jails notorious Islamist preacher
[IsraelTimes] Sven Lau convicted of helping to recruit for so-called ’Army of Emigrants colonists and Supporters,’ deemed a terrorist organization

One of Germany’s most notorious Islamist preachers, Sven Lau, was sentenced Wednesday to five and a half years in jail for backing a terrorist group.

The German Salafist convert, who had previously sparked outrage by forming a "Sharia police" vigilante group, was convicted for helping to recruit for Jaish al-Muhajireen wal-Ansar (JMA) or Army of Emigrants colonists and Supporters.

JMA, which includes Chechens, Uzbeks and Tajiks, first emerged in Syria in 2012, and is deemed a terrorist organization by Germany.

In September 2015, the gunnies pledged allegiance to the al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front, a rival group of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
organization.

Prosecutors said Lau was the main contact for JMA in the western city of Duesseldorf.

The 36-year-old had also traveled to Syria in September 2013 and had purchased night vision equipment for the jihadist group, prosecutors said.

Lau, a former firefighter, had denied the accusations when he was incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
in December 2015.

He argued that his trip to Syria was for humanitarian reasons, despite photos showing him carrying a Kalashnikov aboard a tank.

Lau has been a controversial figure in Germany, where he sparked outrage with "Sharia police" street patrols in the western city of Wuppertal in 2014, telling people to stop drinking, gambling and listening to music.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
a German court in November ruled the vigilante group did not break the law.

The city’s district court ruled that the seven accused members of the group did not breach a ban on political uniforms when they approached people while wearing orange vests bearing the words "Sharia Police."

Judges said there could only be a violation of the law -- originally aimed against street movements such as the early Nazi party -- if the uniforms were "suggestively krazed killer or intimidating."

Separately, Germany’s anti-terror prosecutors announced Wednesday the arrest of three suspected Islamists in the northeastern city of Guestrow.

The trio are suspected of having prepared "an act of violence that threatens the security of the state," said federal prosecutors in a statement, without giving details.

2 die in bomb attack in Diyala
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Two women died and three men were wounded Thursday in two consecutive landmine explosions in Diyala province, a security source was quoted saying.

An IED exploded in a tractor driven by a man at a country road in Binikani, Maqdadia region, northeast of Diyala, wounding the driver, Dijlah TV quoted the source saying.

Two men and two women, who happened to be a few meters away from the blasts’ scene, hurried to the rescue before another bomb exploded, killing the two women and wounding the men, according to the source.

Authorities did point to possible perpetrators, but landmines planted by Islamic State militants have killed several civilians and security personnel in Diyala and other provinces over the past months. Many left casualties among civilians fleeing areas under the militants’ control.

Violence and armed conflicts left more than 700 Iraqis dead and wounded during the month of June, according to a monthly count released by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).

The Iraqi government plans to invade Islamic State holdouts across Iraq, including Diyala, in the near future, having concluded the ousting of the group from their largest stronghold, Mosul, earlier this month.

Tanasuh and Nabaa TV among Libyan organisations and individuals added to Saudi-coordinated ‘terror’ list
[Libya Herald] Libya’s two Islamist TV stations, Tanasuh and al-Nabaa have been added to the list compiled by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt of "terrorists" and terror organizations allegedly supported by Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
Two other Libyan media entities have been added as well: Boshra and Soraya news agencies, both of which are linked to the Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council (BRSC) and the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB).

The BRSC itself has also been added as has the fomerly Benghazi-based Rafallah Sahati Brigade.

The BRSC is effectively much the same as the BDB which was put on the list when it was first unveiled six weeks ago.

The main difference between the two is time and location. The BDB consists of those individuals who were with the BRSC when it was inside Benghazi but who fled the city and then reconstituted themselves in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
as the BDB.

The Rafallah Sahati Brigade, which was part of the BRSC, was closely linked to Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
and is alleged to have received funding and support from foreign countries, including Qatar.

Also on the list are two individuals: Ahmed al-Hasnawi and al-Saadi Abdullah Ibrahim Bukhazem.

Hasnawi, a hardline Islamist, has been blamed for the Brak al-Shatti airbase massacre in May in which 141 people died. He previously was based at Tanenhint Airbase, providing additional protection for Misrata’s Third Force when it was there.

Tanasuh TV is owned by Sadek al-Ghariani, still accepted by some in the west of the country as Libya’s grand mufti. He was put on the terror list when it first came out.

A Saudi Press Agency statement read: "The two Libyan individuals and the six terrorist entities, affiliated with terrorist groups in Libya, have received substantial financial support from the Qatari authorities and played an active role in spreading chaos and devastation in Libya, despite serious international concern over the destructive impact of such practices."

When the list was announced in June, as well as the BDB and Ghariani it included the Salabi brothers and former head of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group Abdulhakim Belhadj. All were accused of having close links to Qatar.

Along with Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt, the Beida-based government also cut ties with Qatar at the time for what it said were "repeated attacks on the dignity of the Libyan people after the February 17 revolution".

Libyan National Army front man Colonel Ahmed Mismari has since accused Qatar providing weapons other support to snuffies in Libya and claims to have evidence to support this although so far none has been provided.

2 ISIS Bombers die in Tikrit
Tikrit (IraqiNews.com) Security forces killed two Islamic State suicide attackers north of Tikrit, Salahuddin, the Interior Ministry said Thursday.

Police forces in Baiji killed the pair at Silo al-Haggag area after they were trapped inside an abandoned house, ministry spokesperson Saad Maan said in a statement.

Islamic State militants have stepped up attacks on security forces, allied paramilitary troops and civilians over the past months across Iraqi provinces, including Salahuddin, coinciding with Iraqi government troops’ operations which managed to oust the group from Mosul, their largest bastion in Iraq.

The eastern side of the town of Shirqat remains Islamic State’s most remarkable holdout in Salahuddin, and it had been the launching point of several attacks.

The Iraqi government plans to invade Islamic State holdouts across Iraq in the near future having concluded its eight-month campaign in Mosul.

Kop dies in ISIS attack near Fallujah

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) A policeman was killed, while head of police station was injured in a suicide attack, a security source from Anbar police said on Thursday.

“Security troops foiled, early Thursday, a suicide attack against Amiriyat al-Fallujah police station, located in Amiriyat al-Somoud town, south of Fallujah. The bombers were wearing suicide belts and possessing weapons and hand grenades,” the source told AlSumaria News.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added that “troops killed one of the attackers, while the other blew himself up, leaving a policeman killed and head of Amiriyat al-Fallujah police station, Col. Aref al-Janabi, injured.”

Amiriyat al-Somoud town is under control of security troops, backed by the tribes.

Iraqi troops were able to a return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them. However, Anbar’s western cities of Annah, Qaim and Rawa are still held by the extremist group since 2014, when it emerged to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate. There has not been an officially-declared military campaign to free those regions, but the province’s military command launched a brief assault early January that managed to recapture some western villages before stopping again.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants.

Government blames bribery for security problems in Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Anbar’s local council has blamed recurrent breaches by Islamic State militants of the province’s security on corruption within security bodies besides what it described as the infiltration of paramilitary troops fighting the group alongside the government.

Naeem al-Kaoud, head of the Anbar council’s security committee, told Almaalomah on Thursday that besides the fragile intelligence capabilities in Anbar, the Tribal Mobilization was already infiltrated by Daesh (Islamic State) members.

“There are IS loyalists inside the tribal mobilization, which facilitates security breaches,” Kaoud said, noting that IS militants had been trying to seep again into recaptured areas after their defeat in Mosul.

“Many IS leaders had also been set free by interrogators for huge sums of money,” the official pointed out as another reason for the security violations. He said that insufficient numbers of police personnel was also a factor.

He urged an urgent meeting by security officials to define delinquent security members.

Islamic State has been holding the towns of Annah, Rawa and Qaim in western Anbar, near the borders with Syria, since 2014, when the group occupied a third of Iraq to proclaim an “Islamic Caliphate”. Iraqi government forces had retaken other cities in the province from militants and plans to invade the remaining the havens in the near future.

Kaoud’s statements came a few hours after a suicide attack by IS killed a police official and wounded a lower-ranking officer in Ameriya, Fallujah.

Past statements by some Iraqi MPs and local officials had also talked about IS militants paying bribes to flee detention in Mosul.

Iraqi aircraft drops leaflets heralding freedom from ISIS

DPA (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi warplanes dropped leaflets on Thursday on areas held by the Islamic State near the Syrian and Jordanian borders telling civilians that military offensives to free them were close.

DPA quoted an Iraqi military colonel Yasser Jabbar saying the leaflets were dropped in millions on western Anbar towns of Annah, Rawa and Qaim, telling civilians to not to allow IS militants to lure their sons into fighting on the group’s side.

The messages urged also to steer out of areas held by the group as forces would increase airstrikes targeting those spots, the colonel said. iraqi air forces had adopted the technique throughout earlier military campaigns targeting IS havens.

Islamic State has held the three towns since 2014, when they occupied a third of Iraq to proclaim an “Islamic Caliphate”. So far, there has not been a wide-scale campaign to retake those regions, but occasional offensives managed to take over several surrounding villages.

The Iraqi government declared victory over IS in Mosul, the group’s former capital in Iraq, earlier this month, and said it was going to proceed towards other group holdouts.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and his military commanders said recently that plans were ready for the invasion of the IS stronghold town of Tal Afar, west of Nineveh, which made observers believe it was definitely the next target of operations.

The Ministry of Defense said Wednesday that though the Joint Operations Command gives “special attention” to the liberation of Tal Afar, troops can launch simultaneous operations also targeting IS havens in Kirkuk’s Hawija and the western Anbar towns of Annah and Rawa.

Home Front: Politix
EXCLUSIVE: A top FBI lawyer is allegedly under an investigation for leaking classified information to the media
FBI General Counsel James A. Baker is purportedly under a Department of Justice criminal investigation for allegedly leaking classified national security information to the media, according to multiple government officials close to the probe who spoke with Circa on the condition of anonymity.

FBI spokeswoman Carol Cratty said the bureau would not comment on Baker and would not confirm or deny any investigation.

This comes as Department of Justice Attorney General Jeff Sessions said he would soon be making an announcement regarding the progress of leak investigations. A DOJ official declined to comment on Circa’s inquiry into Baker but did say, the planned announcement by Sessions is part of the overall "stepped up efforts on leak investigations."

Three sources, with knowledge of the investigation, told Circa that Baker is the top suspect in an ongoing leak investigation, but Circa has not been able to confirm the details of what national security information or material was allegedly leaked.

A federal law enforcement official with knowledge of ongoing internal investigations in the bureau told Circa, "the bureau is scouring for leakers and there's been a lot of investigations."

The revelation comes as the Trump administration has ramped up efforts to contain leaks both within the White House and within its own national security apparatus.

Baker is a close confidant of former FBI Director James Comey, and recent media reports suggested he was reportedly advising the then-FBI director on legal matters following private meetings the former director had in February with President Trump in the Oval Office.

Baker was appointed to the FBI's general counsel by Comey in 2014 and has had a long and distinguished history within the intelligence community.

After working as a federal prosecutor in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice during the 1990s, he joined the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review In 1996, according to his FBI bio. (https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/pressrel/press-releases/james-a.-baker-appointed-as-fbis-general-counsel).

In 2006 Baker received the George H.W. Bush Award for Excellence in counter-terrorism--the CIA’s highest counter-terrorism award, according to his biography. During Baker's long and distinguished career he received the "NSA’s Intelligence Under Law Award; the NSA Director’s Distinguished Service Medal; and DOJ’s highest award-- the Edmund J. Randolph Award."

He is a fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a lecturer at Harvard Law School.

Zimbabwe: Grace Mugabe Suspects Demons As Sons Go Wild, Asks for God's Intervention
[All Africa] First Lady has admitted that she and husband President Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Octogenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case...
have failed to discipline their two sons Robert (Junior) and Bellamine Chatunga who have become wild.

Speaking at her sister's (Junior Gumbochuma) birthday in Shamva over the weekend, Grace said sometimes parents are tempted through their children but, they should be patient with their offspring when they misbehave.

Grace also celebrated her birthday last Sunday.

Mugabe's sons have stolen media attention through their way-ward behaviour. The duo is suspected to be using drugs and having relationships with several women.

Grace claimed that it did not matter whom the children belonged to as it is common that youngsters can be naughty.

"Sometimes we are tempted through our children. Whether they are President's children or not young people are bound to be ill-disciplined at some point. These days most children are getting involved in uncalled for conduct.

"Even though the situation might sound so bad, all is not lost because you can still pick up the pieces and start afresh," Mugabe's wife said apparently referring to her sons.

She also claimed that demons were at play destroying children everywhere.

"We are experiencing serious problems in society as demons attack our children. Most of them are drinking alcohol excessively at a tender age, abusing drugs and engaging in other unnecessary behaviors.

"As parents, we should not give up on them because it is our responsibility to mould them," added Grace.

Hezbollah America announces itself, issues first threat
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A previously unknown bully boy group identifying itself as the "Hezbollah Army in America" has declared its existence by publishing a statement, copies of which were sent to the Iranshahr News Agency headquarters in Los Angeles.

The terrorist group’s statement, dated March 22, 2017, was also clandestinely distributed in large numbers in the Persian Square area ‐ a section of Westwood Boulevard, at the heart of the Iranian expatriate community ‐ in the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Referring to the presence of US forces in the Gulf, the authors of the statement have threatened to respond to the American "terrorist" activities in that region, here on American soil.

Repeating the trade mark expressions of the Iranian government regarding ’World Zionism’ and ’System of Arrogance’, the group is calling itself the ’Unified arm of Moslem nations of the Middle East’ in America, and threatens it with "an iron fist" on its own soil if it does not leave the Gulf.

The statement begins with the Koranic verse of "Indeed the Party of Allah [Hezbollah] Shall Overcome Them", which is part of the common logo of the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Iranian IRGC, and its text consists of a series of disorganized cut and pasted sections from another text.

Alarm
According to the Iranshahr local correspondent, some of the Iranians living in the Persian Square area, have reported the issue to the local police as well as the FBI, declaring their concerns over their security in this neighborhood.

The police have expanded their scope of investigations, have increased their open and undercover patrols in the area and have started a range of activities to finding clues and identifying this terrorist group.

The police have also begun investigating possible links between the birth of this group and the death threats received by the editor-in-chief of the Iranshahr News Agency.

It is also noteworthy that an Iranian revolutionary guard "military theorist" named Hassan Abbassi, had previously announced the establishment of terrorist cells on American soil, while a known Iranian militia leader who was travelling to the US under the cover of a "cancer researcher", was deported from the Boston Airport a couple of weeks ago, amid the pro-Iran lobbyists’ intense campaign in his favor.

Heavy fighting continues in Parwan
Local officials in northern Parwan said on Thursday that Taliban attacked security check posts in Seyagerd district of the province and that clashes are ongoing.

The attacks started early Thursday after dozens of Taliban insurgents attacked the check posts and clashed with the forces, a police official in Dar-e-Ghorband area of Seyagerd, Mohammad Haroon Mubarez said.

“The Taliban will be defeated in their attack and they don’t have the capacity to fight us,” Mubarez said.

However, he did not provide further details about the clashes nor casualties.

In the meantime, a number of motorists have said that the Parwan-Bamiyan highway has been closed to traffic due to ongoing clashes.

However, the Taliban have not yet commented over the clash.

Al Qaeda announces Zakir Musa as head of Kashmir cell
[ENGLISH.MANORAMAONLINE] Global jihadi network Al Qaeda on Thursday officially announced the establishment of its unit in Jammu and Kashmir, naming former Hizbul Mujahideen militant Zakir Musa as its chief in the troubled state.

The announcement was made by the Global Islamic Media Front, a media wing of Al Qaeda and its allied jihadist groups across the world.

The Al Qaeda online propaganda wing disseminated a statement on social media, declaring Musa, a close aide of slain militant commander Burhan Wani, as its leader in Kashmir.

"After the heroic martyrdom of Burhan Wani, the jihad in Kashmir has entered a stage of awakening. Firmly holding the flag of jihad in their hands, Muslims in Kashmir have committed to retaliate with gun every aggression by tyrant Indian invaders," the statement said.

It said jihad with the aid of Allah was the only way to "liberate Kashmir."

"For this goal, a new movement of jihad has been founded by the companions of Wani under the leadership of Zakir Musa," the statement said. The new Al Qaeda cell has been named Ansar Ghawzat-ul-Hind.

Though there have been speculations earlier that Al Qaeda was making inroads in Kashmir, this is the first official confirmation from the terror network about its presence in the state.

Earlier, a 2014 video had called on "brothers in Kashmir" to wage jihad against India.

Though political separatist leaders and militant commanders have been denying a link between Kashmir militancy and jihadi movements like Al Qaeda and Islamic State but Musa, who succeeded Wani after his July 2016 killing, in an April video message made his intentions clear.

Musa asked Kashmiris not to "fall for nationalism" as it was a sin in Islam.

"I see many people in Kashmir are engaged in a war of nationalism, which is forbidden in Islam. The fight in Jammu and Kashmir should not be for the sake of the state. It should be exclusively for Islam so that sharia is established here."

The 23-year-old militant also threatened to kill Hurriyat leaders if they spoke for nationalism and deny that the struggle in Kashmir was for the establishment of strict Islamic code.

The Hizbul Mujahideen, the largest group of local militants, condemned his statement saying they have nothing to do with his Islamist assertions.

Interestingly, Hizbul Mujahideen commander Syed Salahuddin, who is based in Pakistan, released a video statement on Wednesday urging Kashmiris "not to join any global jihadi movement".

"Some of our friends are playing in the hands of our enemy and trying to create divide between people and their leadership. Our movement is an indigenous movement. The freedom movement of Jammu and Kashmir has no worldwide agenda, no links with organizations like Islamic State or Al Qaeda.

"Such organizations have no role in Kashmir," Salahuddin said in a five-minute video clip.
Al Ahram adds:
Musa recently left Kashmire's largest indigenous rebel group, Hizbul Mujahideen, and is believed to have been joined by less than a dozen others.

Previously, no global jihadi groups have openly operated in Kashmire, a territory divided between India and Pakistain but claimed by both.

Intimidation by militias creates censorship in western Libya says rights group
[Libya Herald] Human Rights Watch (HRW) says that human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
activists in Libya continue to be targeted and prevented from operating, in many cases by militias linked to the Presidency Council and its government of national accord (GNA). It says they have been physically attacked and detained in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and other regions of western Libya. In some cases, activists have disappear altogether. It notes that the authorities have been unable to stem the abuse and that the offenders continue to operate with impunity.

HRW says that in April 2017 it interviewed 18 human rights activists, most asking not to be named for fear of repercussions. Eleven claimed to have been threatened by militias or gangs, some of which were affiliated with the UN-backed GNA.

"Militias and other gangs with a ’with-us-or-against-us’ mindset have gone after activists, bloggers, and media workers," said HRW’s Middle East and North Africa director, Sarah Leah Whitson. It had forced many to flee the country, either to Tunisia or elsewhere. The GNA, she said, had to take action to prevent the abuse of human rights activists.

The activists explained the risks associated with their work in the region, notably accusations of espionage. All the activists interviewed by HRW said they had to censor themselves and often left incidents of harassment unreported out of fear.

The report referred to the Libyan Centre for Freedom of the Press (LCFP) which expressed its concerns over the fact that the majority of activists had to practice self-censorship because of fears for their own safety. It noted that they rarely filed police complaints for fear of reprisals and, in some cases, the police refused to accept a complaint.

"By silencing critics through threats of violence, warlords and thuggish militias have found a convenient way to expand their power base at the expense of political stability," said Whitson, noting that, on the contrary, the Constitution Declaration in 2011 guaranteed "freedom of opinion, individual and collective expression, research, communication, press, media, printing and editing, movement, assembly, demonstration and peaceful sit-in in accordance with the statute".
