[AmericanInterest] Yesterday, the Senate voted 98-2 to impose punitive sanctions on Russia and limit the President’s ability to remove them without Congressional review. That vote--the culmination of a lengthy process that saw the sanctions initially approved in the Senate, then held up in the House, and later rewritten after substantial objections--now clears the way for the bill to proceed to the President’s desk. If all goes as planned, President Trump is expected to grit his teeth and sign the bill; even in the unlikely event of a veto, the strong bipartisan support for the sanctions should be enough to override it into law anyway.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz seemingly planned to pay cyber-probe suspect and IT aide Imran Awan even while he was living in Pakistan, if the FBI hadn't stopped him from leaving the U.S. Monday. Public statements and congressional payroll records suggest she also appears to have known that his wife, a fellow IT staffer, left the country for good months ago ‐ while she was also a criminal suspect.
In all, six months of actions reveal a decision to continue paying a man who seemingly could not have been providing services to her, and who a mountain of evidence suggests was a liability. The man long had access to all of Wasserman Schultz's computer files, work emails and personal emails, and he was recently accused by a relative in court documents of wiretapping and extortion.
Records also raise questions about whether the Florida Democrat permitted Awan to continue to access computers after House-wide authorities banned him from the network Feb. 2. Not only did she keep him on staff after the ban, but she also did not have any other IT person to perform necessary work that presumably would have arisen during a months-long period, according to payroll records.
Wasserman Schultz employed Pakistani-born Awan and his wife Hina Alvi, and refused to fire either of them even after U.S. Capitol Police said in February 2017 that they were targets of the criminal investigation. She said police wouldn't show her evidence against the couple and, without it, she assumed they might be victims of anti-Muslim profiling.
Awan booked a round-trip ticket to Pakistan in July and planned to depart Monday, July 24 with a return ticket in six months. He was arrested at Dulles Airport during his attempt to leave.

The report comes from the German security services who told German magazine Der Spiegel that the four women, including 16-year-old Linda Wurzel, worked as Shariah enforcers in Mosul in the so-called al-Khansaa Brigade. The women are said to have enforced the strict dress codes and social codes of Shariah and had the ability to physically beat women who disobeyed the laws, Die Presse reports.
At least two of the women were also involved in recruitment propaganda for the terror group, according to the report. The German government has been in talks with the Iraqi government regarding the four women, and has so far confirmed that none of the four will face the death penalty for their actions on behalf of the Islamic State.
So far there is no evidence that any of the women were involved in killing or fighting, though according to some reports members of the al-Khansaa Brigade had special privileges other women did not within Islamic State territory, which included being able to take up arms and drive vehicles.
A report on the brigade from 2015 stated that many of the members were foreign women and said non-Arab women were often allowed to take a role in the frontline fighting.
The most well-known of the four women captured in Mosul is Linda Wenzel, a 16-year-old who was radicalised over the internet and convinced to join the terror group by a jihadi she had met through an online chatroom. After being detained by Iraqi forces recently Wenzel claimed she just wants to go home to Germany.

Ivory coast man facing expulsion stabs bus driver in Italy

[ABC News] A man from the Ivory Coast who faced expulsion from Italy for previous aggressive behavior stabbed a public transit bus driver Saturday in the Tuscan city of Siena, causing a serious injury, police said. Police said the man retrieved a knife from a home for asylum-seekers where he previously resided after an apparent argument with the bus driver at the end of the line. He returned to stab the driver twice in the stomach and once in the arm. The driver was in serious, but not life-threatening, condition, police said.
The man was known to authorities for previous aggressive behavior and had lost the status of asylum-seeker, police said. He was being housed by a Catholic charity pending his expulsion.
Neighbors who came to the driver's aid alerted police, who shot the attacker in the leg after he turned his attack on them.

Swiss asylum requests at lowest level for seven years

[The Local.ch] The number of requests lodged in the first six months of the year – 9,123 – was lower than at any time since 2010, the Swiss migration office (SEM) reported on Wednesday. The highest number of requests made in Switzerland came from Eritreans, followed by Syrians, Afghans, Somalians and Sri Lankans.
The situation in Switzerland contrasts sharply with that in Italy, which has seen a big jump in migrant numbers.
The SEM said Switzerland was not the primary destination of most of those seeking to migrate to western Europe.
Given the uncertainty over the situation in conflict zones, the government is continuing to plan for 24,500 asylum applications this year, although the real figure could be below 20,000. Additionally, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who was till Friday the petroleum minister, will take over as interim prime minister till the time Shahbaz is elected to parliament, and then to the prime minister's office.
Shahbaz's ascension to the prime minister's office is considered to be a foregone conclusion, as the PML-N continues to hold a hefty majority in parliament and can independently vote him into office. He will also likely seek election to the National Assembly from Nawaz Sharif's constituency, which is a PML-N stronghold.
As part of the agreed-on course of action, Shahbaz will also have to forego his seat in the Punjab 1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard

Mahmoud al-Jaidah, a leading member of the organization, appeared in a television documentary aired by the UAE news agency (WAM) on Friday during which he spoke of plots he was seeking to carry out in the country. He also highlighted the role the Brotherhood played in targeting the stability of the Gulf states.
Jaidah, 52, was responsible for providing financial support to members of the organization residing in the UAE. He is a members of the Brotherhood’s Gulf coordination bureau. He was sentenced to seven years in jail for attempting to illegally enter the UAE through Dubai international airport, but was later pardoned by President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan and expelled from the country.
He explained in the documentary how members of the Gulf cell were chosen, saying that it adheres to a strict hierarchy, which is headed by the executive and Shura councils. The Brotherhood, according to Jaidah, is led by general official Jassem al-Sultan. He is followed in the hierarchy by a 30-member council.
He said: "I was chosen with an administrative group that included Issa al-Ansari, Mohammed Thani, Nasser Mohammed Issa, Ibrahim al-Ibrahim, Abdulhamid Mahmoud and Khamis al-Mohannadi."
The report referred to Qatar’s efforts to embrace terrorist organizations, like the Moslem Brüderbund, to play a larger regional role, while allowing these organizations to infiltrate its state-run facilities and become key decision makers within Doha, reported WAM.

[Iran Press TV] Saudi security forces have killed at least two young men in a besieged town in the kingdom’s Shia-populated Eastern Province, as the Riyadh regime continues its heavy-tactics crackdown there, targeting dissidents.
According to local activists in the volatile town of Awamiyah, Saudi snipers rubbed out Ali Mahdi al-Sobeiti and Hussain Abdullah al-Sobeiti on the road to an Awamiyah suburb on Saturday. They added that the Saudi sharpshooters targeted any moving object in areas on roads around the restive town.
Local media say over 30 people have been killed and many others maimed in over 80 days of tension in Awamiyah, as the regime takes a series of security measures against Shia civilians there.
During the past few days at least seven civilians have bit the dust after Saudi security forces launched an attack on the town.

[All Africa] MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai on Friday fled his party's Harvest House head offices after a contingent of armed police and the deputy sheriff from the messenger of court raided the building.
The deputy sheriff who emptied over five offices at the Harvest House taking all the furniture for auctioning , was acting under the instruction of the courts which ruled in favour of 117 former and current MDC-T employees, whom the party owes their dues.
Mid-morning Friday, MDC-T leadership which includes Tsvangirai and his deputy Nelson Chamisa, abandoned the meeting they were presiding over and fled the building as a result of the fracas.
Sesil Zvidzai, the party's Presidential affairs secretary, told news hounds that they had to adjourn a national standing committee meeting which the movement was conducting.
"The national standing committee wanted to deliberate on election preparedness and we suddenly saw a whole army, of armed police coming through for the purposes that we do not understand.
"We also saw the furniture being taken out by the deputy sheriff .We see this a harassment as we go to the elections which we are going to beat Zanu PF and they want the whole country to believe that we are not organized," said Zvidzai as he also shifted the blame to their political rival Zanu PF .
"We had started the meeting and we were then disturbed, but the meeting is carrying on .This is our headquarters, this is our home, this is where all plans for transformation take place, so the President is always here to work for the people of Zim-bob-we, but unfortunately there are detractors who do not want to see a progressive Zim-bob-we," he said.

[DAWN] At least four people were killed and five injured in a blast close to the Pakistain-Iran border on Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner Panjgur Abdul Jabbar Baloch confirmed the blast in Chedgi area near the Iranian border. He, however, said the nature of blast could not be immediately ascertained.
The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to the sources Taliban attacked a police check post in Samad Square in Nawa district on Friday night, killing 10 coppers.
Provincial governor front man Omar Zwak however confirmed that two coppers were killed and 10 others were maimed in the attack.
Zwak said Taliban has also sustained casualties in the ambush. However, some people are alive only because it's illegal to kill them... he did not give details in this respect.

[Tolo News] A number of foreign troops have been deployed to Farah province to support Afghan cops in the fight against Lion of Islams, local officials said on Friday.
Farah governor's front man Nasir Mehri confirmed the report and said a number of U.S. and Italian troops arrived at Farah city airport on Thursday.
Mehri said that troops will support Afghan cops in ground and from air operations in combat against Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... and other Lion of Islam groups.
He did not speak about the number of the troops but sources said that 120 soldiers deployed to the province.

[Tolo News] A local commander of Hizb-e-Islami in Baghlan has said that he is ready to support the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF) against the Taliban ...Arabic for students... in the central province.
Mirwais Jihadyar, who has at least 1,000 fighters, said from now on, he will fight against those groups which threaten the national interests of Afghans.
He claimed that he controls the areas that are out of government’s control in Baghlan, especially in Baghlan-e-Markazai district.
The Hizb-e-Islami commander said they have local courts where they address peoples’ judicial problems.
According to him, he has control over 150 villages in the province.
"We fight and stop those who by foreigners’ order fight against people and harm them," said Jihadyar.
TOLOnews news hounds Sharif Amiri and Hamid Shirzai say the Hizb-e-Islami fighters are using a small room as a court where they address legal and judicial problems of people living in the nearby areas.
On Saturday, two men visited the court ‐ bringing murder and land dispute cases.
"My son is in prison. Government has put him behind bars for 20 years. I have come here and want Mirwais Khan to address my problem," said Ismail, a resident of Baghlan-e-Markazi district.
"Our region is in the hand of Hizb-e-Islami and we know their good and bad points and we have come here to find a solution for our problems," said Haji Ahmad Wali, another resident of the district.
The Hizb-e-Islami commander in Baghlan-e-Markazi said they investigate up to four cases every day.

The coalition leadership said that the Houthi militias impede access of medicines and food to Yemenis.
The leadership called on the international community to pressure militias to comply with international laws.
The Arab forces are working on the development of al-Mukha port as a humanitarian aid gateway, especially to Taiz, and a temporary replacement to the militia-controlled Hodeidah port, where international aid has been held up.

The program features audio and video confessions by Qatari Moslem Brüderbund supporter Mahmoud al-Jaidah, who received a seven-year jail term in the UAE for supporting the illegal Islamist group, Al Islah.
In the documentary, Jaidah is filmed saying that Qatar had become "the preferred" and "only" mediator of terrorist organizations in the past 20 years.
"The report revealed that Qatar supported Al Islah and provided hotel accommodations to members of the group," according to the Dubai-based Gulf News.
The documentary comes amid a diplomatic crisis in the Gulf, as Soddy Arabia ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. [Libya Herald] There is concern over the fate of the two-man crew of a MiG-21 belonging to the Libyan National Army (LNA) which crashed today in the Duhr al-Hamr area south west of Derna. Reports that the pilot, named as Colonel Adel Jehani, was then shot after he was captured by the mujahideen, have been made the LNA who are now treating him as a martyr. They appear to have been confirmed by the mujahideen’s own front man.
The fate of the co-pilot, named as Waeel Waqwaq, is unknown.
Both were reported to have ejected safely but then captured by the Derna mujahideen who claim to have shot down the plane.
According to a source in Derna, both Jehani and Waqwaq were seen alive in the town after the crash but that after the Mujahideen accused him of previous Arclight airstrikes, he was shot.
Mujahideen front man Mohammed Mansouri also confirmed that the pair had been tossed in the slammer Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit! and were in good health. But he then posted that Jihani had been killed. He later posted that this was in retribution for Arclight airstrikes that had killed women and kiddies.
It is reported that the LNA’s Omar Mukhtar operations room, which is in charge of moves to wrest control of Derna from the holy warriors, has now intensified its siege of the town, stopping any movement, in or out, at the surrounding checkpoints. The LNA is calling for vengeance and saying that it will not move to crush the mujahideen.

The Libyan National Army is the national armed force of Libya, comprising the ground forces, the air force and the navy. It was established by the Libyan government after the first Libyan civil war (2011), as Libya's previous national army was defeated by the uprising and NATO and was disbanded.
In the ongoing Second Libyan Civil War (2014–present), the Libyan National Army is loyal to the legislative body in Tobruk, the Libyan House of Representatives, internationally recognised until October 2015. It therefore fights against the Islamist Libya Dawn, the Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries and the Islamic State in Libya.
At the beginning of the Second Libyan Civil War, the army was split between Khalifa Haftar's "anti-terrorist" faction, which acted largely independently, and Abdulsalam al-Obaidi's "legalist" faction which relied on orders from political authorities. In 2014, the Council of Deputies appointed Khalifa Haftar commander of the whole army, re-uniting the two factions. Abdulrazek Al Nadoori is chief of staff.
In the case of the many armed groups in Libya, they do not belong to the Libyan National Army unless they pledge allegiance to it. Many armed groups that exist in areas outside the control of the Council of Deputies and the Libyan National Army accept government funding and openly exert authority associated with official forces, while not have a commitment to obey the Libyan National Army hierarchy or the government. As the Second Libyan Civil War progresses, armed groups are increasingly condemned by the Council of Deputies and have been branded illegal.

There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet... ’s top commanders in Benghazi’s Sidi Akhribesh before it finally fell is now in the hands of the Libyan National Army.
Ibrahim Bunuwara has appeared in a photo posted online by dressed in blue, beside notorious Saiqa Special Forces ...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group... commander Mahmoud Warfali, who has repeatedly appeared in apparent execution videos of captives. The most recent one went viral earlier this week.
In an unusual development, though, it appears that he was not captured in Benghazi or anywhere in the east but in Khoms, west of Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. [Libya Herald] There was a massive turnout today in Souk El Khamis Emsihel, between Tarhouna and Gasr Ben Gashir, for the funerals of four young men from the town killed yesterday in festivities with Tahouna’s notorious Kani brigade. The fighting was over control of the town’s cement works.
While it was taking place yesterday, there were reports of Arclight airstrikes over Tarhouna. A camp where the brigade keeps its tanks and heavy weaponry was said to have been hit and two people killed.
An official from the air academy in Misrata has denied that any aircraft based there were used in the attak. It is thought that an Egyptian air force plane may have been involved.
The fighting at Suq al-Khamies started on Thursday evening after a group of local youth earlier in the day forced members of the Kani brigade to leave the local cement works, one of Libya’s largest.
The brigade took control of it two years ago, and have reportedly been pocketing all the profits. These are said to be worth LD 100,000 a month.
Having been ejected on Thursday morning, the Kani brigade returned on Thursday evening with tanks, armed vehicles and other heavy weaponry. Fighting then continued until around midday yesterday. According to local sources, in addition to the four local youths killed, six others were captured and taken to Tarhouna. Some were said to have been maimed.
Suq al-Khamies today was quiet, with the Kani brigade fully in control of it and the cement works.

[AA.TR] Protesters on Friday blocked streets in Caracas and other Venezuelan cities in more marches against a controversial vote Sunday that could forma an assembly to rewrite the Constitution.
Opposition parties occupied the streets despite a protest ban by the government that extends through Tuesday. Violators could receive prison sentences of five to 10 years, according to the government.
Venezuelans rushed to stores and banks early Friday after most businesses were closed during a two-day national strike called by the opposition that began Wednesday.
Violent festivities with the government have killed 113 since April, according to the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office, as the country faces economic and political crises with falling crude oil prices that funds most of the government’s socialist agenda. The crisis has forced thousands of citizens to flee during in recent months.
Several countries and global organizations, including the U.S. and EU, have condemned the vote for Sunday.
The United Nations ...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly... asked the government of President Nicolas Maduro to allow citizens to protest peacefully.

[AlAhram] Former Tuareg rebels operating in northern Mali took control of the key town of Menaka on Saturday, two days after clashes elsewhere in the region with pro-government forces, sources said.
"They entered Menaka very early this morning and they are there now," an official in the governorate of the town, one of five regional capitals in north, told AFP. "They didn't fire a single shot."
On Thursday, the ex-rebels -- gathered in a group called the Coordination of Movements of Azawad (CMA) -- clashed with pro-government forces in the town of Kidal further north, inflicting heavy losses.
Kidal had been CMA's stronghold. It looks like they've decamped for more peaceful environs.
The two sides signed a 2015 peace deal on curbing violence in northern Mali and limiting the reach of jihadists, but the United Nations says fighting between them has escalated in recent weeks.
A source in the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, or MINUSMA, said: "The situation is calm in Menaka. Elements presenting themselves as CMA fighters are in the town and in the surrounding dunes. They say they want to make the town secure."
Alghabass Ag Intalla, a CMA commander, added: "Our troops are in control of Menaka. We didn't fire a single shot."
"The GATIA fled," he said, referring to the French acronym for a pro-government force named the Imghad and Allies Touareg Self-Defence Group.
He said the move was not a violation of the ceasefire because the GATIA "had no business being in Menaka."
Menaka had since March been run by interim authorities in line with the peace accord.
Northern Mali is the site of frequent clashes between rival armed groups, as well as a haven for jihadist activity.
In 2012, key cities in the region fell under the control of jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda, who exploited an ethnic Tuareg-led rebel uprising.
While the Islamists were largely ousted by a French-led military operation, attacks have continued on UN and French forces, civilians and the Malian army.
Militias like the GATIA operate in areas where Mali's army is absent or has a very limited presence.

"Mr X’s" mother, daughter or sister, the headstone might read, rather than the name of the dear departed.
Openly using the names of women is regarded as inappropriate and even an insult in the conservative Moslem nation.
On a birth certificate there is no sign of the mother’s name. On a wedding invitation the bride’s name is not mentioned - only the names of her father and husband-to-be.
But a women-led campaign on social media is starting to challenge the old Afghan tradition.
#WhereIsMyName, recently launched by a small group of women’s rights activists, wants to bring women’s given names to official documents and to the lips of Afghan people.
"Our society is full of injustice for women, basically everything is taboo for women," activist Bahar Sohaili, a prominent member of the campaign, told the Thomson Rooters Foundation.
"With this campaign we aim to change many things for women and social media has opened a new window to Afghanistan’s young generation."
Popular Afghan singer Farhad Darya has supported the campaign, posting a picture of himself with his wife and the caption "Farhad and Sultana Darya".
Thousands of Afghans, including authors, journalists and musicians have backed the movement on Facebook and Twitter, aided by widening access to the internet in the country.
"I went to a private bank office to fill up the form, when the manager asked my mother’s name, I paused for few seconds, because I had actually forgotten my mother’s name. Nobody in all these years asked or called her by her name," said Batool Mohammadi, a member of the campaign.
’Unwanted chaos’
The practice of erasing women’s names is rooted in Afghan customs, rather than Islam, the dominant religion.
It is a symbol of women’s second-class status in society, where decisions about their education and marriage are left to the men of the family.
Since the ultra-conservative Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... was tossed in 2001, Afghan women have regained the right to go to school, to vote, and to work. But violence against women in the home is widespread, and often goes unpunished.
#WhereIsMyName aims to challenge attitudes that allow men to make all decisions and leave women invisible and powerless.
"Many times I meet wonderful women with bright thoughts and opinions during my work trips, but when I want to interview them or take pictures they say to me, ’Let me ask my husband, father or brother if they allow me to talk or be pictured,’" said Farzanah Wahidi, a female photojournalist from Kabul.
Bahar Sohaili and her friends are fighting for the day that a woman’s name and her identity will no longer be shameful.
"We aim to put pressure on the government to enact laws to protect women’s rights. Whenever we demand our rights before a court or in parliament they (officials) use the pretext of religion to put us down," she said.
According to Afghan law a mother’s name should not be recorded on a birth certificate. Abdullhah Atahi, a front man for the High Court in Kabul told the Thomson Rooters Foundation that Afghan society wasn’t ready for change.
"We don’t have a problem mentioning the mother’s name on the birth certificate or on other relevant documents, but in Afghanistan’s culture people aren’t ready for such a modern step," he said. "It may invite unwanted chaos."
South Koreans do something similar, though less intense. (I have no idea what North Koreans do.) A girl is known by her own name until she marries, when she becomes known to all as Mrs. Husband. Then when she has her first child, she becomes known as Child's Mommy. Thus, I would have been trailing to all and sundry as a girl, then Mrs. Wife, then trailing daughter #1's mommy. My South Korean friends introduced themselves to me as Hae Jong's Mommy and Boe Kynung's Mommy; it's only because I am a friendly, ignorant American that I could insist on knowing their own names -- which they had not shared with each other before, despite all being upper middle management Samsung wives together in a foreign land.

[DAWN] History was repeated on Friday morning. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... was sent home after the Supreme Court disqualified him under the Constitution’s Article 62(1)(f) for misdeclaring his assets when he was just 10 months away from completing his five-year tenure in office. He became the 15th prime minister of the country who got sacked without completing the term. He also became the first prime minister who was elected thrice but couldn’t complete even a single term.
The PML-N leader was first booted out of the office by his close ally in the presidency, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, in 1993. Although the apex court reinstated him, he agreed to quit along with the president under pressure from the military command.
His second term was terminated prematurely when Gen Pervez Perv Musharraf ... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ... and generals close to him ousted him in a bloodless coup in 1999.
This time the burden of sending him packing was borne by the country’s top court, which used the infamous Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution, which, political leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi recently said, were inserted by dictator Gen Zia ul Haq ...the creepy-looking former dictator of Pakistain. Zia was an Islamic nutball who imposed his nutballery on the rest of the country with the enthusiastic assistance of the nation's religious parties, which are populated by other nutballs. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976 by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, whom he hanged when he seized power. His time in office was a period of repression, with hundreds of thousands of political rivals, minorities, and journalists executed or tortured, including senior general officers convicted in coup-d'état plots, who would normally be above the law. As part of his alliance with the religious parties, his government helped run the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, providing safe havens, American equipiment, Saudi money, and Pak handlers to selected mujaheddin. Zia died along with several of his top generals and admirals and the then United States Ambassador to Pakistain Arnold Lewis Raphel when he was assassinated in a suspicious air crash near Bahawalpur in 1988... to use them as a stick against politicians.
The PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani ... Pakistain's former prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics could be awe-inspiring ... was the first premier to vacate the Prime Minister House on the court’s orders. He was also the first chief executive of the country to have been disqualified in 2012 under the Article 63(f)(1) after the judges found him ’guilty’ of having committed contempt of court because he did not write to the Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against then president Asif Ali Zardari under their order.

[IsraelTimes] Troops seize documents, equipment ’used for incitement,’ army says; PA ministry of information condemns operation
IDF soldiers raided early on Saturday the offices of a Paleostinian media group in the West Bank city of Ramallah, seizing equipment and documents.
The Palmedia group headquarters were raided on suspicion of incitement to terror in its broadcasts and other news content, the Israeli military indicated.
The Paleostinian news agency Wafa reported that several offices working with Palmedia, a media production company that provides broadcast services to other media outlets, were also broken into by Israeli forces.
Wafa said the offices were "ransacked," and some damage was caused to the property.
It also reported that residents hurled stones at the soldiers as they left the area.
Paleostinian news agency Ma’an said at least 10 IDF vehicles had surrounded the Ramallah headquarters of the company before the raid, according to witnesses.
An IDF spokesperson told Ma’an that the soldiers "seized media equipment and documents used for incitement" from the offices, adding that the raid was part of "ongoing efforts against incitement."
The Paleostinian Ministry of Information condemned the raid, saying in a statement that it "proves Israel’s intentions to prevent the guardians of truth from continuing their media, national, and ethical role of transferring the message of our people’s desired freedom."

The man, named as Joseph A.R., was detained in the Aegean holiday resort town of Didim in Aydin province and then remanded in jug by a court ahead of trial, the state-run Anadolu news agency said late Friday.
A Bulgarian citizen was detained with him but she was later allowed by the court to go free under judicial control. Her mother was also detained but freed without charge.
Anadolu said Joseph A.R. was arrested after posting pictures on social media allegedly showing himself in camouflage gear taking part in Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) operations in Syria.
Ankara considers the YPG a terrorist group and the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged an insurgency inside The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire.... since 1984.
But Washington considers the YPG as the main fighting force on the ground in Syria against the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. The United States is now openly arming the YPG and the group is heavily involved in the US-backed operation to oust IS jihadists from their stronghold of Raqa.
The YPG has also attracted the services of foreigners -- many with no Kurdish family origin -- to fight against IS in Syria and Iraq. Several have bit the dust.
According to the Hurriyet daily, the Briton said in his statement to police Sherlocks that he spent three months in Syria providing medical assistance to the YPG.
He said was trained on the use of weapons by the YPG but never took part in any festivities, Hurriyet reported.
The BBC said the man is ex-soldier Joe Robinson, 24, from the northern English city of Leeds and the Bulgarian his fiancee Mira Rojkan.
Robinson had previously described his experiences with the YPG in media interviews, including with the Guardian.
Anadolu said that Ottoman Turkish police launched the raid to arrest him after receiving a tip-of by email.
"They arrested us on the beach while we were vacationing with my mother," Rojkan told the Guardian in a message.
The British newspaper said Robinson served with British forces in Afghanistan in 2012 and travelled to Syria in 2015 to work as as a combat medic in the YPG.
It said he had been arrested on suspicion of terror offences after arriving back in Britannia but the charges were dropped after 10 months.

His next task, however, was naming his political successor to lead the party.
The party has been functioning as family dynasty over the last two decades, as is the case with other mainstream political parties in the country like Pakistain People’s Party [PPP] led by the widower of the late Benazir Bhutto ... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in... . This fact is truly suggested by PML-N party’s name, Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz.
Sharif acted swiftly to address such challenges in the 12 hours after the decision to sideline him by nominating Shahbaz Sharif ...Pak dynastic politician, brother of PM Nawaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab... , his younger brother and chief minister of Pakistain’s largest province, Punjab, as the next prime minister for the remaining term of his government.
Besides, Nawaz’s old ally Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was nominated to succeed him as interim prime minster for the mandatory period of 45 days, during which Shahbaz will contest elections of the parliament to succeed his deposed brother. Abbasi is considered as one the most trusted friends of Sharif and is the minister of petroleum and natural resources. He also owns Pakistain’s largest private airline, the main competitor of country’s national flag carrier.
All eyes on Maryam
Still, these measures seem insufficient for party stalwarts to enable Sharif to maintain his complete grip over his political party, for the fear of cracks and formation of a king’s party, as it happened with the party following his ouster in 1999 in a military coup.
"All eyes are focused on Nawaz’s eldest daughter Maryam Nawaz, who has been unusually active in the frontline of party leadership during the last four years, to succeed her father as party chief," said a senior party leader. "She is the only child of Nawaz Sharif showing the flair of political acumen and diplomacy, since her two younger brothers lacked such skills," he added.
But, the political fate of Maryam hangs in the balance after the recent decision of the apex court where it was directed to register criminal cases against her husband, father, two brothers and the father-in-law of her youngest sister Asma Nawaz.
The joint investigating team (JIT) established on the directives of Pakistain’s Supreme Court in its final report and concluded that Maryam Nawaz is the real and ultimate beneficial owner of the Avenfield controversial apartments. She never declared the ownership of these overseas properties, submitted fake documents and misled the Supreme Court.

Two father and son duos are reportedly the four men accused of planning to blow up a plane with a homemade bomb in an 'Islamic-inspired' terror plot in Australia.
It is understood the men planned to detonate the device on a flight from Sydney to the Middle East, possibly Dubai, Seven News reported.

"It's clear that the attack wasn't for abduction. They (Boko Haram) attacked just to kill."
[AlAhram] Boko Haram Islamists have published a video showing three kidnapped members of an oil exploration team, after an ambush in northeast Nigeria ... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border... earlier this week that killed at least 50.
In the four-minute video, the trio identify themselves as being from the University of Maiduguri and call on the government to meet the jihadists' demands in exchange for their safe return. The men were part of a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) team on a mission to find commercial quantities of oil in the Lake Chad basin when they came under attack on Tuesday.
"I want to call on the acting president professor Yemi Osinbajo to come to our rescue to meet the demand," one of the men says in the video, which he said was shot on Friday.
He attributed the attack to the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems.... -supported Boko Haram faction headed by Abu Mus'ab al-Barnawi, which has promised to hit military and government targets.
There was no indication of where the video was shot but the convoy came under attack near Magumeri, some 50 kilometres (31 miles) by road northwest of Maiduguri.
Most of the victims were soldiers and civilian militia members providing security. Five members of staff from the university -- two lecturers, two technologists and a driver -- were also killed, vice-chancellor Ibrahim Njodi said on Friday.
University of Maiduguri front man Danjuma Gambo confirmed the identities of the three kidnapped men in the video.
"They are our staff but one more is yet to be accounted for," he told AFP.
"It's a confirmation of the boldness and reassurance that Boko Haram has managed to gain over the last six weeks," Yan St-Pierre, from the Modern Security Consulting Group in Berlin, told AFP. "They have been attacking more and more military outposts and more military convoys. For them to go after NNPC personnel just shows they don't fear any military reprisal.
"Basically they have managed to gain enough resources, enough material, to plan ambushes targeted towards high value targets."
The al-Barnawi faction differs from fighters loyal to Boko Haram's long-time leader Abubakar Shekau ... the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who has been reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down ... in that it disagrees with the indiscriminate targeting of civilians in suicide and kabooms.
Nigeria is searching for oil in the northeast to try to reduce its reliance on supplies from the Niger delta, where Lion of Islam attacks have slashed production and deepened the country's worst recession in decades.
The military gave the NNPC the green light to continue exploration in November 2016, according to Nigeria's junior oil minister Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu.
The University of Maiduguri's vice-chancellor told news hounds on Friday the university had been hesitant to send staff with the NNPC team but had been assured about security.

[All Africa] An unknown number of gunnies have attacked the rural home of Kenya's Deputy President William Ruto in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu County.
The armed attackers are said to have forced their way into the home shortly before 1pm (local time) on Saturday.
Officer Injured
They are said to have approached a police officer manning the gate with some wares they said they were selling before grabbing his gun and butting him with it and then entered the home.
The officer was left unconscious.
Gunshots
A series of gunshots could be heard inside the home at about 2pm to 3pm.
A dozen of elite officers from Recce unit arrived at the home at 2.45 pm and have taken over the operation to fight the attackers.
The attack happened three hours after Mr Ruto left the home to attend a campaign rally in Kitale, North Rift, where he joined President Uhuru Kenyatta.

[DAWN] A judicial magistrate in Lahore on Saturday sentenced the primary suspect in Khadija Siddiqui stabbing case to seven years in prison.
Magistrate Mubashir Awan at Cantonment Courts announced the verdict after finding suspect Shah Husain guilty of attempted murder. The court ordered police to immediately arrest Husain.
Khadija, a law student, was attacked by her class fellow, Shah Husain, on May 3, 2016, near Shimla Hill where she along with her driver had gone to pick her younger sister from school.
Both sisters were about to get into their car when the helmet-wearing suspect attacked Khadija with a knife and stabbed her 23 times leaving her critically injured.
Civil Lines police had started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Husain on charges of attempted murder. Police had also recovered the cycle of violence and knife he used in the attack.
The convict happens to be son of a lawyer, Tanvir Hashmi.
Talking to news hounds after the verdict was announced, Khadija thanked TV anchors and lawyers for supporting her throughout the case proceedings.
Khadija's fight for justice
Khadija, who attends a private law college, has been fighting a legal battle to seek justice in her case for over a year.
After a sessions court granted Husain bail after he had spent two months behind the bars, Khadija's had suspected that the attacker was released because he belonged to an influential family.
"The judges get scared, the lawyers have so much influence the judges are forced to give an incorrect verdict," she had said on Geo TV's 'Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada Kay Saath'.
In May this year, Khadija sat an examination under the police protection as Husain also was in the same centre.
"Sitting the examination in such circumstances was nothing short of an ordeal and I kept praying and trying to remember the course material," she said at the time.
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah had on May 23 taken an administrative notice of the delay in the trial and directed the court to conclude it within 30 days by holding a day-to-day hearing.
Magistrate Awan seized with the trial took over two months to wind up the proceedings.
During the trial proceedings, the prosecution presented 11 witnesses to establish the accused guilty of having attempted murder. The defence had requested the court to delete the offence of attempted murder from the FIR, however, its plea was turned down by the judge.

[An Nahar] Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Saturday that the US Navy had approached their patrol vessels in the Gulf and fired flares in what it called a provocative move.
"At 4 pm (1130 GMT) on Friday, the supercarrier USS Nimitz and its accompanying warship, while being monitored by the Guards' frigates, flew a helicopter near the Resalat oil and gas platform and approached the force's ships," the Guards said.

[SHABELLENEWS] Suspected al-Shabaab ... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda... murderous Moslems have hijacked a branded Jubilee Party campaign vehicle in Mandera county.
Sources said the murderous Moslems ambushed the vehicle belonging to an MCA aspirant in Kotulo ward, at Falama area near the Kenya-Somalia border on Friday, July 28.
Mandera South Police boss Charles Chacha confirmed the incident and said the driver and passenger are missing after the ambush.
"We received a report of hijacking of a vehicle that was returning to Bore Hole 11 town after dropping party supporters at Falama area near Kenya-Somalia border and the rescue operation is underway," he said.
Chacha said a rescue operation by the Kenya Defence Force (KDF) is underway.
"The issue has been taken over by our military inside Somalia where we believe it was commandeered to but the driver and another passenger are yet to be found," Chacha said.
According to the police, the vehicle had dropped several supporters of Mandera Governor Ali Roba who had attended a political rally in Kotulo town the previous day.
The latest incident is the second time al-Shabaab murderous Moslems have hijacked a Jubilee Party vehicle in Mandera.
