[Met.police] Officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command have arrested a man on suspicion of preparation of acts to commit terrorism.
The 49-year-old man was stopped by officers at Southend Airport under schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 on Tuesday 1 August. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of preparation of acts to commit terrorism, under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
The man, who was arrested under PACE, was taken to a south London police station, where he remains in police custody.
Officers also carried out a search at an address in Essex, which is now complete.

The announcement is the latest in a series of setbacks for patients who are facing rolling strikes by junior doctors that threaten to cripple the health service as winter approaches.

Control is why they refused to allow the parents to spend their own money -- raised by a Go Fund Me, as I recall -- to take their infant to America for an experimental treatment that would have benefitted future patients even if it did not cure their son. They refused even to allow the parents to take the baby home to die, insisting it be kept much greater expense in the hospital until the end.
Although BMI does accurately calculate the proportion of one’s weight in relation to one’s height, it falls flat on at least a few grounds. For one, it does not differentiate whatsoever between fat mass and muscle mass. For example, let us assume that we are a highly-muscular or fit person with a low body fat percentage. It is possible that, due to a high percentage of muscle mass, our BMI would place us in the overweight category, even though we actually have a lesser percentage of body fat than a non-athletic person in the normal category.
Likewise, BMI does not take into account bone density as existing separate from fat. As described by NPR’s Keith Devlin, bone is both denser than muscle as well twice as dense as fat. As a result, an athletic person with a lot of muscle, strong bones, and low fat would have a BMI index of overweight or even obese, even if his or her lifestyle and body were in fact, very healthy.

[SkyNews] Police found a "viable" pipe bomb in one of the defendant's cars - the gang claimed an undercover officer had planted the device.
A gang of men who styled themselves as the "musketeers" have been found guilty of plotting a bomb and knife attack in the UK.
Naweed Ali and Khobaib Hussain from Birmingham, and Mohibur Rahman and Tahir Aziz from Stoke-on-Trent, stood trial at the Old Bailey after counter-terror police found a pipe bomb described as "viable".
MI5 and undercover police officers had set up a fake firm in the city called Hero Couriers which employed both Hussain and Ali. The pair were being monitored after earlier terrorist-related convictions.
During Ali's first day working at the Birmingham firm last August, police searched his black Seat car and were surprised to find the bomb alongside ammunition, an imitation handgun and a meat cleaver with the word "kafir" - meaning non-believer - scratched into the blade.
It prompted a major security alert and the area around Florence Street close to the city centre went into lockdown, with the Army's bomb squad tasked with making sure the pipe bomb would not explode.
Latex gloves and industrial tape were also recovered.
Police immediately arrested all four men and seized a large sword which had been stashed in Aziz's car.
Aziz said the sword was for self-defence and claimed he was doing research when asked to explain what he was doing with pages from an al Qaeda pipe bomb-making article.
Jurors were told Hussain had previously handled the same type of pipes used for the bomb on his gas-fitter's course and his DNA was on the roll of tape.
The four men had denied plotting the attack and claimed in court an undercover MI5 officer known as Vincent had planted the bomb in the vehicle.
Ali's car had been parked at the "covert" courier firm while he went to Luton to deliver a parcel.
Vincent was cross-examined over 12 days and repeatedly rejected the allegations against him.
Stephen Kamlish QC suggested Vincent had put a bag of incriminating evidence in Ali's vehicle before MI5 turned up to bug it.
He alleged that was his only window of opportunity as MI5 had already bugged Hussain's car after he had begun working for Hero Couriers the month before.
Jurors agreed with Vincent and, after deliberating for 22 hours, convicted Ali, 29, Hussain, 25, and Rahman, 33, of preparing terrorist acts.
Aziz, 38, was found guilty of the same offence after the jury deliberated for another 20 minutes.
As they were led from the dock, Rahman shouted out: "I hope you're happy with your lies. Lying scumbags."
Next-door neighbours Ali and Hussain had previously been convicted after travelling to Pakistan to attend a terror training camp, although neither man went through with the training.
Rahman had earlier served a five-year sentence for possessing materials linked to terrorism.
The three men met inside HMP Belmarsh in southeast London and went on to plot the pipe bomb attack that was intercepted by the authorities.
West Midlands Police arrested the four men shortly after they discovered the bomb and have been unable to identify where the men had planned to detonate it.

WASHINGTON -- The Trump administration is preparing to redirect resources of the Justice Department’s civil rights division toward investigating and suing universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants, according to a document obtained by The New York Times.
The document, an internal announcement to the civil rights division, seeks current lawyers interested in working for a new project on "investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions."
The announcement suggests that the project will be run out of the division’s front office, where the Trump administration’s political appointees work, rather than its Educational Opportunities Section, which is run by career civil servants and normally handles work involving schools and universities.

Considering what passes for education in a lot of colleges today, affirmative action may actually be unfairly favoring whites - by keeping them out.
Late Wednesday, DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores issued a statement calling the press reports “inaccurate.”
“This Department of Justice has not received or issued any directive, memorandum, initiative, or policy related to university admissions in general,” she added. “The Department of Justice is committed to protecting all Americans from all forms of illegal race-based discriminations.”
Instead, Flores said the department was looking for lawyers to investigate a 2015 complaint filed with the Department of Education over Harvard University's race-based quota system. Racial minorities engage in "competitive victimhood" in a quest for recognition of past sufferings such as slavery and colonialism, according to a new research study published by Belgian professors.
Laura De Guissmé and Laurent Licata, professors at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, made the claim in a recent article in the European Journal of Social Psychology, further finding that the struggle for victimhood can "foster intergroup conflict" such as a desire for revenge, increased hostility, and racism against other minorities.
Consequences of competitive victimhood are especially dangerous, the professors note, because they can contribute to the escalation of conflict (for example, with regards to the Israel/Palestine conflict), reduce trust and empathy, and impede the resolution of conflicts by peaceful means (heightening the threat of violence).

The Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran reportedly provided aid to Paleostinian protesters demonstrating against new security measures at the Temple Mount last month.
The aid reportedly included boxes of food and drink, which came with a flyer attached depicting the Dome of the Rock and a quote attributed to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei reading, "With the help of God, Paleostine will be freed. Jerusalem is ours."
While Paleostinian media reported that the food packages were provided by an Iranian youth movement, a PA intelligence official said it was clear that the Iranian regime was behind the aid.
"It is clear to us that the regime in Tehran, by means of its long arms, is behind this catering operation," the official told the Israel Hayom daily in an article published Tuesday.
"The sums come to millions of shekels and the Iranians found an opening to reap the benefits and send a message to the Paleostinian public right under Israel’s nose that it is Iran that looks out for them. The flyer attached to all the food packages and the quotes of Khamenei make clear who is behind these food baskets."
The flyer also showed Khamenei’s hand, pointing toward the Dome of the Rock. The hand was shown in mirror-image -- appearing to be the Iranian leader’s right-hand, when it is in fact his left. (Khamenei’s right-arm was injured when he was badly hurt in a 1981 liquidation attempt.)

Orhan Sahin, the lawyer of the ISIS suspects in a deadly jihadist kaboom case, "wished mercy" on ISIS bully boy Ismail Gunes, who went kaboom! in a bomb-laden vehicle in front of the Gaziantep police headquarters on May 1, 2016, causing the deaths of three coppers.
"I pass on my condolences to the families of those killed in the attack and wish God’s mercy on the person described as the suicide bomber. In his testimony, Abdurrahman A. said that he was previously active in ISIS ranks in Aleppo and was repairing vehicles in Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa and Manbij. He also said that his father, only identified as Temir Abu Y., was a tank driver for ISIS.
The Tekirdag police’s anti-terror branch then notified police in the southern border province of Hatay on the issue and Temir Abu Y. was detained in Hatay.
The investigation into the jihadist father and son has been ongoing, while the police are trying to determine other bandidosmurderous Moslems who are linked to them.

Mosul (Iraqinews.com) A policeman was killed on Tuesday as a physically-challenged member and two women belonging to the Islamic State (IS) attacked a check point, Shafaaq News reported.
IS element attacked a check point in western Mosul along with two women, prompting police to open fire and kill the gunman, who was revealed later to be a disabled member.
The two women were arrested. A pistol and fake ID card were in possession of one of them. They were later handed over to the intelligence of the 9th brigade, the source added.
The Iraqi government declared victory over Islamic State militants in western Mosul earlier this month, saying it concluded more than eight months of battles to recapture the city which the militants held as the capital of their self-styled “caliphate” since 2014. The eastern side of the city was retaken late January.
Following the declaration of victory, Iraqi forces have been in efforts to comb the recaptured areas for remnant IS cells, countering occasional attacks by the group and arresting many hiding among civilian refugees.
IS lost more than 250.000 fighters in the Mosul campaign, according to Iraqi commanders.
The group still holds a few holdouts in Nineveh, Kirkuk, Salahuddin and Anbar, all the targets for future offensives by the Iraqi forces, the U.S.-led coalition and pro-government paramilitary troops.
Tal Afar (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State has imposed strict measures in Tal Afar town after a prominent female sniper was found slain, a local source was quoted saying.
“Um Azam, a woman from the Russian federation, is known as ‘the dove’ for her good eyesight and accurate shooting. The skilled sniper was found dead in a narrow alleyway in Tal Afar, west of Mosul. She was slain by unknown people,” the source told AlSumaria News.
“IS imposed strict measures and arrested many people,” the source, who asked to remain anonymous, said. “Many members and leaders of the group are killed in the town, which indicates an internal infighting among the group to take over positions in the regions.”
Earlier on Tuesday, news reports said IS prominent vocalist abu Talha al-Shami was killed in an airstrike in the town.
Tal Afar is one of the important strongholds still held by IS in Nineveh since August 2014. The town has been set as the next target of operations after victory was declared in Mosul on July 10.
Iraqi Defense Ministry said last week that a date has been set for the town invasion, however, it will not be declared to maintain the secrecy of the intended operations.

“IS member known as abu Talha al-Shami, a main vocalist in the group, was killed in an airstrike that targeted a group’s rest house in the eastern districts of Tal Afar town, located west of Mosul,” the source told AlSumaria News on Tuesday. “Several IS members were killed and injured as a result of the airstrike.”
“Shami, in his early thirties, has been famous within the group. He recorded many songs praising the group. He has been known as ‘nightingale of the levant’, being a Syrian from Hasaka,” the source added.
The group has depended on a group of vocalists to praise it through songs posted on its websites to attract more people.
On Monday, a U.S-led coalition drone fired two rockets at an IS residence in Alawliya, east of Tal Afar, killing 12 militants including the group’s commando chief, Abdul-Aziz Abdul-Qader al-Jeheishi.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have started using a new route across the Gulf to funnel covert arms shipments to their Houthi allies in Yemen’s civil war, sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters.
In March, regional and Western sources told Reuters that Iran was shipping weapons and military advisers to the Houthis either directly to Yemen or via Somalia. This route however risked contact with international naval vessels on patrol in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
For the last six months the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) has begun using waters further up the Gulf between Kuwait and Iran as it looks for new ways to beat an embargo on arms shipments to the Houthi movement, Western and Iranian sources say.

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) An Islamic State militant was killed and three rest houses were destroyed in several parts in Diyala, a police statement said on Tuesday.
“Based on intelligence information and coordination between al-Azeem police station, army and paramilitary troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi, an airstrike killed IS militant, who was near al-Bou’Awad village, in Azeem town, north of Diyala. The militant was killed, while his vehicle was destroyed,” the statement said.
Moreover, joint troops destroyed three IS rest houses in Rabei’a village, near al-Saadiya town, northeast of Baqubah.
Diyala police confiscated several rest houses over the past few months.
On Tuesday, the Dijlah Operations Command announced destroying three rest houses as a large-scale military operation was launched to track IS fighters across al-Saadiya town.
Attacks launched by Islamic State militants against security troops, the pro-government forces and civilians surged over the past few weeks in northeast of Diyala, which urge the Iraqi forces to prevent the militants infiltration between Salahuddin and Kirkuk provinces, especially the regions stretching along Hamreen mountains and Al-Azeem town.
Diyala (IraqiNews.com) A donkey was killed on Tuesday in an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion as it stepped on the bomb, saving many civilians in southeastern Diyala governorate, Alsumaria News reported.
A local source told Alsumaria that an IED, planted on the side of an agricultural road in a town southeast of Diyala, exploded early Tuesday, killing a donkey as it stepped on it.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added that the road is used by many civilians, especially farmers, on a daily basis, indicating that they were saved by the donkey.
Islamic State members have escalated their attacks against security and civilians over the past months as Iraqi forces were focusing most of their efforts to drive the group out of Mosul, the militants’ former capital which was declared free on July 10.
More than 25000 militants were killed in the Mosul campaign, according to Iraqi generals, including both foreign and local members, while a few thousands remain in other havens in Diyala, Salahuddin, Kirkuk and Anbar which the Iraqi government plans to target with future military offensives.

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) The son of Islamic State’s so-called war minister was killed in clashes with Iraqi troops in north of Salahuddin province, a security source said.
“A group of IS militants, headed by the son of the group’s so-called war minister, abu Omar al-Chichani, who was killed more than a year ago, attacked on Monday the Iraqi troops deployed in Hamreen mountains. Several militants, including Chichani’s son, were killed,” the source told AlSumaria News on Tuesday.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source added, “Chichani’s son used to lead the so-called ‘invasions brigade’ in Nineveh, before he fled, along with others, to Hawija in Kirkuk, after the province was liberated. He worked on forming the brigade again.”
The group, according to the source, “kept the news on his death as secret and buried him in Hawija.”
In 2016, the U.S.-led coalition confirmed the death of Chichani in Syria.

[ALMASDARNEWS] A fortnight after the two main jihadi groups controlling the southwestern Syrian province of Idlib have signed a ceasefire, an all-out infighting is looming following today’s showdown.
Local activists reported that Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham Death Eaters stationed at a checkpoint south of Saraqib have intercepted a convoy of four trucks for Faylah al-Sham.
HTS Death Eaters seized the vehicles which were laden with weapons and ammunitions, and detained Abu Adas; Faylaq’s commander who was leading the convoy.
In response, Faylaq al-Sham gave THS a time limit until midnight to release the convoy and the commander before acting accordingly.
The showdown comes two weeks after HTS and Ahrar al-Sham ...a Syria jihadi group made up of Islamists and salafists, not that there's that much difference, formed into a brigade. They make up the main element of the Islamic Front but they don't profess adoration of al-Qaeda and they've been fighting (mainly for survival) against the Islamic State. Their leadership was wiped out at a single blow by a suicide kaboom at a crowded basement meeting in September, 2014... (a close ally to Faylaq) signed a ceasefire following fierce festivities in north Idlib which killed up to 50 Death Eaters from all sides.

[AlAhram] A Ottoman Turkish military vehicle was hit by an improvised bomb in southeast Diyarbakir province, killing two soldiers, security sources said on Tuesday.
The device exploded by gunnies of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) as the vehicle was passing the road, the sources said. They said ground and air operations were under way to hunt down the myrmidons.
Separately, security sources said three PKK gunnies were killed in the southeastern province of Tunceli after being identified by a drone.

Led by their Jaish Assoud al-Sharqiyah and Liwaa Ahmad ’Abdo factions, the Free Syrian Army began shelling the Syrian Arab Army’s positions tonight, as they prepare to storm the latter’s defenses around the Badiya area.
According to a military source in Damascus, the army is prepared for the rebel offensive; however, they believe this may also be an attempt to show their supporters they are going to keep fighting the SAA, despite the U.S.’ refusal to support their battle.

[PTINEWS] A Delhi court today ordered framing of charges against Indian Mujahideen A locally recruited auxilliary of Pakistain's Lashkar-e-Taiba, designed to give a domestic patina to Pakistain's terror war against its bigger neighbor... (IM) operative Yasin Bhatkal and 10 others in the 2010 Jama Masjid blast case.
Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma, however, discharged three alleged members of the outfit, saying there was not enough evidence against them.
The court discharged Syed Ismail Affaque, Abdus Saboor and Riyaz Ahmad Sayeedi, who were named in the charge sheet by the police.
The case pertains to an kaboom near the historic Jama Masjid here on September 19, 2010 soon after two suspected IM operatives had fired at a bus from which foreign tourists were descending near a gate of the mosque. Today's order came on the blast incident.
The police had charge sheeted these suspected IM members, including its co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, in connection with the blast case and said these operatives had carried out the strike to dissuade foreign nations from participating in the the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
The police had also said IM operatives had planned that foreign tourists found near Jama Masjid would be randomly shot and a kaboom would be executed there for maximum casualty.
It had claimed that Bhatkal had prepared a pressure cooker IED, which was planted in the car parked outside Jama Masjid, and an kaboom had taken place.
The court had on July 18 reserved its order on whether to put Bhatkal on trial in four separate terror cases, including the Jama Masjid blast case, after concluding the hearing of arguments on charges in the cases.
Bhatkal was awarded the death penalty by a Special NIA Court in December last year in a case related to the 2013 Hyderabad kabooms, which had claimed 18 lives.

As part of its attempt to isolate the peninsula, a Saudi-led bloc including the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt has derided Qatar for hosting an office for the Afghan gang.
The office, which opened in June 2013, was part of a broader US-led effort to facilitate peace talks in Afghanistan - not to support their ideology or the group itself.
The New York Times reported on Monday that Otaiba, the Emirati ambassador to Washington, had received an "angry call" from UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, complaining that the Taliban had ended up in Qatar and not the UAE, according to messages in the ambassador's Hotmail account.
"I got an angry call from [Zayed] saying how come we weren't told," Otaiba wrote to an American official, referring to the decision on choosing Qatar to host the Taliban.
The newspaper obtained another email dated September 12, 2011, in which an Emirati official questioned the US position on the Taliban office's location

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) front man Najib Danish told news hounds that the attack was launched by two suicide bombers at around 11 am local time.
He said at least two local workers of the embassy were killed and two others belonging to the national police and police special forces were maimed in the attack.
Danish further added that the security forces arrived in the area immediately after the attack was launched and evacuated the Iraqi ambassador, his deputy, and diplomats of the embassy.
According to Danish the attack was ended after the Afghan cops eliminated all the remaining attackers during the shootout.
Yesterday’s attack on embassy of Iraq was the second attack carried out by the anti-government armed krazed killer groups in the past one week which followed the deadly boom-mobileing that left at least 24 dead and 42 others maimed last week.

[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] In a tragic incident in northern Morocco, a snake charmer was killed after being bitten by a poisonous snake in the middle of his show in front of passers-by.
The incident took place on Monday evening in the touristic city of Martil. The man who made his living out of playing music for the snakes and hypnotizing them was stung by one in his right hand. Despite attempts to rescue him, the man died.
Many Moroccans make ends meet with this profession, chiefly in touristic cities, most notably the city of Marrakech.
The death of the citizen, which was highly foregrounded on social media evoked a general feeling of sadness among citizens especially the inhabitants of the city and the by passers who witnessed the tragic event.
In addition, his death is one among many since an important number of snake charmers to die by lethal poison despite the experience they have in this area.

Police Inspector-General Muneer Ahmed Khan confirmed that the two were killed after troops cordoned off on a tip the southern village of Hakripora during the early hours of Tuesday.
The two trapped people fired at the Indian troops, triggering a shootout that lasted at least two hours, Khan said.
Dujana, who had orchestrated several attacks against Indian forces in southern Kashmire, had a cash reward of 1.5 million rupees (about $23,400) on his head.
A police statement described the killing as a great achievement for India. "LeT chief commander Abu Dujana of Pakistain along with his accomplice killed in Harkipora Pulwama, huge achievement for police and SF (security forces)," the statement read.
Witnesses said one of the two houses from where the Lions of Islam fired was set ablaze by Indian soldiers and another was blown up using heavy explosives.

[Iinquirer] Families of farmers and militiamen beheaded by the Abu Sayyaf are demanding justice just as the number of bodies recovered separately in the province of Basilan, believed to be Abu Sayyaf victims, had risen to seven.
"They treated my brothers like animals," said Lucia Constancia of her brother Renato Casiple, and half-brother Rene Sanson. “They cut their heads, they chopped their bodies,” she said.
The headless remains of Casiple and Sanson were found in the town of Maluso in Basilan on Saturday. They were among five bodies recovered in Maluso believed to have been killed by the Abu Sayyaf.
Military spokesman Andrew Bacala said the victims were farm workers and militiamen who had been actively supporting the government’s antiterrorism campaign in Basilan.
The five bodies found in Maluso on Saturday were recovered more than a kilometer from where local businessman Dodong Divinagracia and his son, Ily, were found dead on Friday. The Divinagracias were kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf members in Maluso on July 20.
The rebels took the five other men a few hours after taking the father and son.

The FBI jugged Into the paddy wagon wit' yez! Awan on bank fraud charges last week as he attempted to flee the country to Pakistain, where he had recently wired almost $300,000. Awan and several of his family members who worked for dozens of House Democrats are suspected of stealing computers and improperly accessing and transferring House members’ computer files.

I hope this is just a foot in the door, but I'm a practicing Optimist.
[SHABELLENEWS] At least five people were reported to have been killed, several others maimed in a huge kaboom at a busy tea shop in the southern port town of Kismayo ...a port city in the southern Lower Juba province of Somalia, at the extreme southern end of the country (assuming Somalia can be called a country). It is the commercial capital of the autonomous Jubaland region... on Tuesday afternoon.
Conflicting reports are emerging from the type of the blast, which has destroyed the cafe, popular with local elders, youngsters and Jubbaland security force members.
Witnesses at the scene say the kaboom has resulted from explosives-laden car parked at the tea-shop, while other sources reported that a bomber has carried out the attack.
The death is likely to rise, as many of the of the maimed are at death's doors.
No group has yet grabbed credit for the cafe bombing, but Police said they believe Al shabaab was responsible for the carnage.

[Hurriyet Daily News] A local peddler attacked a statue of Ataturk in the Siverek district of the southeastern province of Sanliurfa on July 30, saying that "idol worshipping had no place in Islam," Dogan News Agency has reported.
The peddler, identified as Mehmet Malbora, climbed onto the pedestal of the statue in Siverek’s Cumhuriyet Square in the afternoon hours and began to damage it with a wooden sickle.
"There is no idol worshipping in Islam. Are those who protect the idol worshipping descendants of the Prophet?" he reportedly shouted.
Witnesses around the scene informed the police of the incident, and nearby district gendarmerie units also intervened to move Malbora, who was wearing a turban-like head covering, away from the statue.
Police then arrived at the scene and detained him, taking him to the district police headquarters for questioning.

Qasioun News reported that the Islamic State group launched an attack, at noon today, on the locations of the Syrian army and allied militias, near al-Zamla village, southeast of Raqqa.
Meanwhile, media sources belonging to the extremist group informed destroying a military vehicle belonging to the Syrian Army on the outskirts of the village, after violent clashes between the two sides, which took place amid mutual artillery and rockets shelling.
It is noteworthy that the Islamic State lost large areas in the southern and eastern countryside of Raqqa, after battles with the Syrian army.

In mid-June, a remote area called the Dolam plateau in the Himalayas where China, India and Bhutan meet made headlines when Indian and Chinese troops began a standoff over a road construction project. China conducted a live-fire exercise in the area, and there have been false reports of deaths. Diplomatic efforts are underway to calm the situation, but still the risk of war has been on everyone's mind.
The terrain and weather in the area, located in a region called Doklam, are anathema to war. And yet, almost exactly 55 years ago, China and India fought briefly over this and other contested border areas. So what is the strategic value of this seemingly obscure plateau? And would India and China really go to war again over it?
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] A deadly kaboom has taken place in Herat ...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns... city in West of Afghanistan as there are fears that dozens of people have been killed or maimed.
The incident took place around 8:30 pm local time near Jawadia mosque in the city but the type of the kaboom has not been ascertained so far.
Preliminary reports indicate at least 20 people have been killed and around 30 others have been maimed in the kaboom.
No group or individual has so far grabbed credit behind the incident.
In the meantime, a security source said the incident took place after a jacket wallah detonated his explosives among the prayers in the mosque.
The source further added at least 25 have been killed and around 30 others have been maimed in the attack.
However, corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds... the head of the provincial hospital Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai said the dead bodies of at least 20 people have been shifted to the hospital so far.
He said at least 25 others who sustained injuries in the attack were also shifted to the hospital for the treatment.
A suicide kaboom on a Shi'ite mosque in the western Afghan city of Herat killed more than 29 people and maimed more than 64 on Tuesday, officials said.
Abdulhai Walizada, a local police front man, said there appeared to be more than one attacker on Tuesday, with witnesses describing a jacket wallah who detonated explosives and at least one other, a gunman who threw grenades at worshippers.
"Two attackers entered the mosque and started shooting and throwing grenades at people," said Mohammad Adi, a worshipper at the mosque who was injured in the attack and taken to hospital.

Islamic State group has grabbed credit for a suicide kaboom on a Shia mosque in Afghanistan that killed and maimed dozens of people on Tuesday, the group's official agency AMAQ said on Wednesday.

[Dhaka Tribune] The Pak Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... on Tuesday released the first edition of a magazine for women, apparently aiming to convince its target readership to join the krazed killer group and take up jihad.
The first edition of "Sunnat E Khaula" ‐ which translates as ’The Way of Khaula’, referring to an early female follower of the Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) ‐ published by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) features a picture of a women veiled from head to toe on its front cover.
Inside is an interview with the TTP’s leader’s wife, who is not named, in which she talks about being married to the head of the krazed killer group, Fazlullah Khorasani, at the age of 14.
"I ask you why now everywhere there is hue and cry about underage marriages... We have to understand that mature boys and girls if left unmarried for too long can become a source of moral destruction of the society," the krazed killer leader’s wife tells the interviewer.
"We want to provoke women of Islam to come forward and join the ranks of mujahideen e (holy warriors of) Islam," reads the opening editorial of the magazine, which includes an advice column for would-be lady jihadists.
"Organise secret gatherings at home and invite like-minded jihadi sisters," the column suggests.
"Distribute literature reflecting on the obligation of jihad, arrange physical training classes for sisters. Learn how to operate simple weapons. Learn the use of grenades."
The English-language magazine also includes an article written by a Pak female doctor describing her decision to shun her western education and embrace Islam, titled "My journey from ignorance to guidance".
At the height of the Taliban’s influence in Pakistain, the krazed killer group regularly put out publications in Urdu and English, hoping to attract recruits to its ranks.
The krazed killer group was also active on Facebook and Twitter, but most of its social media pages have now been closed.
Pakistain’s military launched an offensive against turban groups in the country’s northwest in late 2014 after the Taliban attacked a military-run school killing more than 150 people, mostly children.
Security has since improved, though the Taliban continues to sporadically launch attacks, including one last month on a market in Lahore that killed 26 people.

Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) An army soldier was killed on Tuesday by sniper north of Baghdad, a security source told Alsumaria News.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, added that a sniper targeted an army checkpoint in northern Baghdad and killed a soldier, noting that a security force surrounded the area to track the sniper.
Earlier on the day, the Baghdad Operations Command has killed a suicide bomber while attempting to attack troops west of the capital, according to a statement.
Bombings and armed attacks are seen on almost a daily basis against security members, paramilitary groups and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake IS-occupied areas in 2016.
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi troops have rescued two kidnapped foreigners on Tuesday, the Baghdad Operations Command announced.
“After diligent work, the command has managed to free two Bangladeshi nationals and arrest their abductors,” Maj. Gen. Jalil al-Rubaie, commander of the Baghdad Operations said in a statement.
Earlier today, the Baghdad Operations Command said that troops killed a suicide bomber while attempting to attack security personnel west of the capital Baghdad.
Last week, the command have freed a kidnapped child from Mosul and arrested the abductor, who was the wife of an Islamic State (IS) leader in northern Baghdad.
[Dhaka Tribune] Pakistain’s parliament elected ex-oil minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as prime minister on Tuesday, days after three-times premier Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... was ousted by the Supreme Court.
Abbasi is seen by the ruling party as a placeholder for Sharif’s designated successor, his younger brother Shahbaz, who must first secure election to the 342-member National Assembly.
Abbasi, nominated by Sharif’s ruling Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz (PML-N), secured 221 votes, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq announced on live television. He will be sworn in later Tuesday.
"I give the floor to the new prime minister of Pakistain," Sadiq said as Abbasi took his place in the premier’s seat.
"I am thankful to all those who took part in this democratic process," Abbasi said. "Those who were in favour, those who opposed me. This is the procedure in democracy. And I am also thankful to PML-N who nominated me for this post. Of all these, I am most thankful to Nawaz Sharif."

Nawaz Sharif was the 15th prime minister in Pakistain’s 70-year history, roughly half of which was spent under military rule, to be ousted before completing a full term.
The top court sacked him Friday after an investigation into corruption allegations against him and his family, bringing his historic third term in power to an unceremonious end and briefly plunging the nuclear-armed nation into political instability.
Abbasi is the former federal minister for petroleum and natural resources, and a businessman who launched the country’s most successful private airline, Air Blue.

[DAWN] Nearly 500 people arrested in the crackdown following the failed July 15, 2016 coup in Turkey will go on trial today. They are accused of conspiring to oust the government from an air base seen as the plotters' hub.
A total of 486 suspects will go on trial in a purpose-built courtroom outside Ankara, charged with crimes ranging from murder, violating the constitution and attempting to kill the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu reported.
They are accused of running the coup bid from the Akinci air base northwest of the capital, which the authorities regard as the headquarters of the plotters where orders were sent out for fighter jets to bomb parliament.
Almost all the suspects — a total of 461 individuals — are held in custody while seven are still on the run and the remainder charged but not in jail.

[AlAhram] A total of 2,531 Afghan cops were killed and 4,238 maimed in the first four months of the year, according to figures released in a report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan, a U.S. Congressional watchdog.
The figures, from Jan. 1-May 8, were provided to U.S. military authorities by the Afghan government and were consistent with figures from the same period last year, the report said.
In an earlier report released in February, SIGAR said at least 6,785 Afghan soldiers and police had been killed in the first 10 months of 2016.
The figures, showing around 20 soldiers and police being killed every day, underline the challenge for Resolute Support, the NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all.... -led training and advisory mission trying to build up Afghan cops. The United States is expected to send around 4,000 troops to boost the mission but has yet to announce its long-awaited new strategy for the region.
U.S. commanders and officials have warned repeatedly that Afghan forces have been suffering unsustainably high casualties against the Taliban ...Arabic for students... , partly because of tactics that include a heavy reliance on vulnerable static checkpoints.
Just last week, around 30 Afghan soldiers were killed in the southern province of Kandahar when their checkpoint was overrun by Taliban fighters.
U.S. officers say that troops defending checkpoints suffer as much as 10 times the level of casualties as they do when conducting offensive operations. But they have struggled to persuade Afghan commanders to cut their use, partly because local politicians say the checkpoints are needed as a visible sign of government presence in isolated areas.
The SIGAR report also quoted U.S. commanders who assess the fighting between government and bully boy forces as a "stalemate", with government forces in control of 59.7 percent of the country's 407 districts, the same as last quarter.
It said bandidos bully boys control 11 districts and influence another 34, equivalent to 11.1 percent of the total with another 29.2 percent contested, although it was unclear if they were actively contested or simply left alone by both sides.
The main centres of bully boy strength were in the southern provinces of Helmand ...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan... , Kandahar, Uruzgan and Zabul as well as Kunduz in the north.
Around 3 million people, or about a tenth of the population, were living in areas controlled or influenced by bully boys, with some 21 million living in areas under government control or influence.

That annualizes to 7500 a year. Not nothing, but lower than average South Vietnamese losses (11K) during the Vietnam War. Not great though, because South Vietnam was battling regular troops equipped with heavy artillery and tanks, as well as an insurgency.

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) More than 4,000 families are besieged by Islamic State in western Anbar to be used as human shields, a member of the provincial council said on Tuesday.
“More than 4,000 families, most of whom are elderly, women and children, are besieged by IS members in Qaim town, located on borders with Syria. They are denied access out of their houses,” Hamid al-Dulaimi told BasNews.
“Tens of civilians were shot dead, beheaded and burnt to death in Qaim over spying for Iraqi troops or collaboration with tribal fighters,” Dulaimi added.
According to Dulaimi, “the liberation offensives at the western regions are so late as the battle in Mosul was ongoing. However, military troops had not moved yet to the upstream regions of Euphrates River.”
A military source was quoted earlier this week as saying that Lt.Gen Abdul-Amir Yarallah, commander of the Nineveh Operation, ordered to besiege IS havens in western Anbar preparing to invade them.
Iraqi fighter jets reportedly dropped last week millions of leaflets informing locals that liberation offensives for the province were nearing.
Iraqi troops were able to return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them. However, Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Qaim and Rawa are still held by the extremist group since 2014, when it emerged to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate.

(Reuters) The U.S-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are on the verge of seizing full control of the southern neighborhoods of Islamic State-held Raqqa, a Kurdish official said on Tuesday.
The U.S.-led coalition said SDF fighters advancing from the east were within 300 meters (330 yards) of meeting up with those advancing from the west. The SDF was making “consistent gains” every day, the coalition spokesman said.
On Monday, the World Health Organization said there were critical shortages of medical supplies in Raqqa, where it estimated up to 50,000 civilians remained. Separately, Medecins Sans Frontieres said many sick and wounded people were trapped.
The SDF launched its U.S.-backed campaign to seize Raqqa in early June. The assault on Islamic State’s de facto capital in Syria overlapped with the campaign to drive IS from the Iraqi city of Mosul, where IS was defeated last month.
The Kurdish official told Reuters SDF fighters advancing from the east and the west remain separated by a few streets where fighting continued.
Full control of the southern districts would sever Islamic State’s last remaining path to the Euphrates River which is to the south of the city.
“There is a fierce resistance from Daesh, so we can’t determine when exactly we’ll take (full control),” said the official, referring to Islamic State. “Around 90 percent of the southern neighborhoods are liberated,” the official added.
The spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition said SDF fighters had also captured around 10 square km (4 sq miles) of territory from Islamic State north of Raqqa in the last two days.
“We’ve seen a less coherent ISIS defense in Raqqa compared to Mosul. ISIS is still using car bombs, booby traps, and civilians to hide behind, but their inability to address the multiple advances from the SDF is apparent,” coalition spokesman Col. Ryan Dillon said in response to emailed questions from Reuters.
In an appeal for $20 million to respond to the crisis in northeastern Syria, the World Health Organization on Monday described the situation in Raqqa as “particularly worrying”.
“Raqqa’s main hospital and many other health care facilities have closed due to airstrikes,” it said. “The facilities that are still functioning face critical shortages of medicines, supplies and equipment.”
“Water and electricity are available only intermittently,” it said, adding that civilians were unable to move freely due to travel and security restrictions imposed by IS.
Medecins Sans Frontieres relayed patient reports of large numbers of sick and wounded people trapped inside Raqqa “with little or no access to medical care and scant chance of escaping the city.”
Last week, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the SDF has captured half of Raqqa.
The SDF is dominated by the Kurdish YPG militia, and is the main partner for the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State in Syria.
Islamic State has lost large expanses of territory in Syria over the last year to separate campaigns waged by the SDF, the Russian-backed Syrian military, and Turkey-backed Syrian rebels.
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] US-backed forces battling to oust ISIS from its Syrian bastion Raqqa have advanced in the city’s south, seizing a new neighborhood, a front man and monitor said Tuesday.
The Kurdish-Arab Syrian Democratic Forces militia (SDF) began a campaign to capture Raqqa from ISIS last year, slowly encircling the city before breaking into it for the first time in June.
Backed by US-led coalition air strikes, the alliance now controls more than 50 percent of the city, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based monitor.
"Overnight, the SDF advanced in the south of the city, after taking control of the Nazlet Shahada neighborhood," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.
He said SDF fighters also controlled large parts of the adjacent neighborhood of Hisham Bin Abdel Malik, after advancing in the south from both the eastern and western fronts.
"ISIS (ISIS) effectively no longer has a presence in the southern neighborhoods of Raqqa, after SDF forces coming from the eastern front met with those advancing from the western front," he added.

Taliban insurgents are embroiled in clashes with security forces after launching an attack along the Kabul-Kandahar Highway on Tuesday, officials confirmed.
According to them the highway is closed to traffic.
The attack was launched at about 5am local time and “currently the clashes are ongoing,” according to officials.
However, the officials did not provide further details nor information on casualties.
In the meantime, trucks carrying commercial goods and cars were forced to return to Kabul.
The drivers said that they have returned "due to heavy clashes.”

Just a guess, but this whole unmasking thing had more to do with team-manship than anything else.
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways said on Tuesday it was helping Australian Federal Police with an investigation that police began into an "ISIS-inspired" plot to bring down a plane and resulted in stricter security screening at Australian airports.
Four men were placed in durance vile Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try! in raids in several suburbs in Sydney, Australia's largest city, at the weekend and are being held without charge under special terror-related powers.
"The Etihad Airways aviation security team is assisting the Australian Federal Police with its investigation and the matter is ongoing," Etihad said in a statement.
"Etihad is complying fully with the enhanced security measures at airports in Australia and monitoring the situation closely," it said.
Police have not identified the airline that was allegedly targeted in the plot, nor the specific means that were to be used to bring it down, other than to say it involved an "improvised device".
US officials, who spoke to Rooters on condition of anonymity, said a foreign intelligence service had intercepted communications between the plotters in Sydney and members of ISIS in Syria. The officials declined to identify the foreign intelligence service.
Another two US officials familiar with the Australian arrests said a developing plot had been detected. One of them, also speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... , said the alleged plot was "fairly well along" when it was disrupted by Australian authorities.
The other official said the target appeared to have been a commercial flight from Sydney to the Gulf.
The arrests have disrupted air travel in Australia, where authorities and airlines have asked travelers to arrive earlier than usual for additional screening.
The houses of the detained men were still being searched on Monday evening, two days after the arrests. A single black police four-wheel-drive vehicle was parked at one of the raided homes in the inner Sydney suburb of Surry Hills.
Forensics officers had also set up a tent for objects taken from the house, according to a Rooters witness. A police officer at the scene declined to comment.
A group of men accused of plotting to bring down an international flight may have been building a bomb with 'mother of satan' gas, which was used in the Manchester Arena attack, a terror expert has claimed.
The new 'details' of the alleged plot come as one of the suspects, Abdul Merhi, 50, was released without charge on Tuesday night. Abdul Merhi was one of four men taken into custody on Saturday when five Sydney properties were raided by NSW and federal police.
The remaining three suspects will stay in detention under special powers which allow police to hold them for up to a week.

In literature, an overly complex plot is the sign of amateurish thinking. I imagine this also holds true for terrorists.
I thought TATP was a liquid, not a gas, and simple enough to mix up in the bathtub of one's mother. But I've never been good at chemistry, so I could be wrong.
[Hurriyet Daily News] A young Ottoman Turkish man who was registered twice separately by his divorced parents has been facing the possibility of doing his compulsory military service twice.
Yusuf Yildiz has already applied to the military service with his first ID, which was registered by his father with the birth year of 1997, only to find out that he had a second ID card belonging to him, in which his birth year is 1998.
Yildiz’s parents divorced when he was two years old. He lived with his father until the age of 12.
"My dad had me registered when I was about to start school," Yildiz said.
"My mother’s name is Melek, but he had it registered differently and my birth year as 1998. I have used this ID for years. But this year I received an official document for my military service, which says my name is Yusuf Demirel, my mother’s name is Melek and my birth year is 1997. When I applied to the civil registry office, I found out that I actually have a second ID, which was registered by my mother," he added.
Yildiz wants the identity card registered by his mother to be annulled. He applied to a court in an attempt to solve the problem.
"But it was not annulled since I could not take my parents to the courthouse," Yildiz said.
"This year, I suspended my military service because my birthdate appears to be 1997 on this ID. The second call [to military service] is also approaching. Will I serve in the army twice? I do not know how this will end," he added.

Same thing happens to people with two passports from two different countries. I remember there being a big brouhaha a few years back about some kid who was Korean but also had American citizenship. He showed up in Korea with his Korean passport and the authorities were there to meet him at the airport: "You're in the Army now." His parents freaked, naturally, and called lawyers and tried to weasel out of it because having a US passport means a get out of jail free card.

One of my professors in college had the same problem. He had both Greek and U.S. citizenship. He couldn't go back to Greece because he would be inducted into the army.

The latest ISIS asset to find itself a priority for the receiving of RuAF munitions is the jihadist group’s fuel trucks. The idea is to starve Islamic State motorized and mechanized forces of their core means to keep mobile.
In doing this, the RuAF will limit the ability of ISIS to conduct a mobile defense of the region under its control, reducing its operational options and creating a scenario where jihadist group’s losses will be increased at less effort for pro-government forces.

About 120 people have been killed in the unrest, including at least 10 during Sunday’s vote.
Both Lopez and Ledezma had been urging protests against Sunday’s vote, which they charged was rigged and a naked power grab by Maduro.

[DAWN] Jordan's parliament scrapped a controversial article in the penal code that allowed a rapist to escape punishment if he married his victim, on Tuesday.
"Lawmakers agreed to remove the controversial Article 308, which stops the punishment of a perpetrator of sexual crimes if he marries his victim," the official Petra news agency reported.
The article was scrapped as parliament passed amendments to the penal law.
Activists have been campaigning for years to abolish the article, which allows rape charges to be dropped if the rapist marries his victim and does not divorce her for five years.

[UPI] An elephant on an Indian road was filmed pulling a tarp from the top of a truck and stealing some of its load of potatoes.
The video, filmed on a road through the Garhbeta forest in West Midnapore, West Bengal, shows the elephant pulling the tarp at the top of a produce truck to the side.
The elephant then pilfers potatoes from inside the truck while ignoring calls for it to get away from the truck.
The pachyderm is unperturbed even when the truck driver and others stopped on the road attempt to use firecrackers to chase it away.

[Bangkok Post] Two village security volunteers were killed and four wounded when a bomb exploded at a shelter where they went to rest after providing security for teachers in Pattani province on Tuesday morning. The blast left a hole 1.5 meter wide hole and a meter deep. Investigators collected metal fragments and electronic parts from the scene.
Police believed the explosive was stuffed in a steel pipe which was ignited remotely when the volunteers retired to the shelter. The shelter is used by local residents as well as security forces.
One volunteer was killed instantly by the blast. Another died later at the hospital. Both lost their legs.
Prior to the attack, a bomb disposal team was deployed about 7am to check a suspicious box found at a market in Mayo municipality. It turned out to be just an empty box.

When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face... Ottoman Turkish state media said that the Ottoman Turkish frigate TCG Gokova had docked in Doha earlier this week carrying 214 soldiers who would take part in the exercises.
The exercises got underway on Tuesday and would initially involve ground forces with naval forces later on, NTV television said. An observation day involving top commanders would take place on August 7-8, it added.
A total of 250 Ottoman Turkish soldiers and 30 armored vehicles will take part, it added.
On June 5, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt cut ties with Qatar accusing it of backing extremism and fostering ties with their Shiite rival Iran.
Doha denies the claims and has been strongly backed by Ankara throughout the standoff.
The crisis has put Turkey in a delicate position as it seeks to balance its strategic alliance with Qatar with preserving its own relations with regional kingpin Saudi Arabia.
Turkey is setting up a military base in Qatar, its only such outpost in the region. It has sped up the process since the crisis began and reportedly now has 150 troops at the base.

With all our troops there we can occupy the government, declare all people present to be citizens, and institute democracy.
Perhaps all those semi-slaves that are present will vote for the emir.

[DAWN] Over half of 9,000 Paks imprisoned across the globe were tossed in the slammer ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... on charges of drug smuggling, officials of the Ministry of Overseas Paks informed the Senate Committee on Overseas Paks on Tuesday.
A Pak citizen, Zulfiqar, who is facing execution in Indonesia on charges of drug smuggling, is not well and is receiving treatment, the foreign ministry said, adding that his execution had been halted last week because of the ministry's efforts.
"A new date for the execution has not yet been announced," foreign ministry official said.
Appalled at the finding, the members of the committee asked why the ministry was not making sure that travellers were aware of the menace and why it was so easy to take smuggle drugs from Pakistain.

Tuesday’s report comes as the US-backed forces are battling in northern Syria to retake the city of Raqqa, IS’ de facto capital of the bad boys’ self-proclaimed caliphate.
The Ekot news program says jihadi fighters from other countries are also being held by the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, the Kurdish militia that forms the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces.
Ekot didn’t provide details on how many jihadi fighters from Sweden are being held.
Sweden’s security service, known by its initials SAPO, has said that up to 300 people from Sweden have joined radical Moslems in the past six years.
There was no immediate comment from the Swedish Foreign Ministry.
Government forces are making progress in the ongoing military operation in Janikhail district in the far east of Paktia province, military officials confirmed.
The officials said the military operation was launched on Tuesday.
Janikhail, a strategic district close to the Durand Line, was captured by the Taliban eight days ago.
“Key areas of Janikhail including Reshpakai Pass (towards the center of the district) were retaken by government forces early on Tuesday morning at 5am local time. So far, 101 Taliban fighters including foreign fighters have been killed and 87 others wounded and two vehicles belonging to the Taliban were destroyed during the operation,” said Major Gen. Abdul Wase Milad, Commander of 203 Atal Military Corps.
According to Paktia officials, Taliban has suffered heavy losses in offensives by security forces.
“Security forces are advancing by adapting special tactics against the Taliban. Taliban has suffered heavy losses in the battle. Key check posts were retaken,” Paktia Police Chief Colonel Nisar Ahmad Abdul Rahimzai said.
A Border Police commander meanwhile suggested that the local check posts in various parts of the district must be strengthened – in order to prevent a comeback by the Taliban.
“Same as last year, this year too, check posts fell to the enemy. These check posts must be reinforced and empowered. The check posts near the Durand Line must be strengthened,” said Raz Mohammad Mandozai, commander of Second Regiment of Afghan Border Police in Paktia.
Paktia governor meanwhile raised another issue, which according to him, fuels and continues the war in Janikhail.
Governor Shamim Khan Katawazai told TOLOnews that “the Pakistani military supports the Taliban in the fight against Afghan security forces in the district”.
“At least 600 Taliban fighters entered this side of the Durand Line. These fighters receive direct command from Punjabi commanders,” Katawazai said.
“Almost 50 Punjabi nationals were among them (Taliban fighters), to command (the fighters) and we have arrested a number of them and they have confessed (about their nationality and their role in the war). Janikhail is a key district. Their goal is to destabilize Paktia and Khost provinces' districts from Janikhail,” Katawazai stated.
This comes amidst a series of Taliban attacks in many districts across the country including Kohistan in Faryab, Taywara in Ghor and Janikhail in Paktia province in the past two weeks.
However, security forces managed to retake Taywara, Kohistan and Baghlan-e-Markazi district in the north and western parts of war-ravaged Afghanistan.
The Defense Ministry assured the public earlier this week that it will retake Janikhail in the near future.
The Janikhail district is located 150 kilometers to the west of Gardez City. It shares a border with Kurram Agency and Parachinar regions across the Durand Line – the disputed border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
[DAWN] There is the letter of the law and there is good politics. There is recovering from a legal blow and there is doubling down on mistakes. There are the Sharifs and there is good sense.
In the days since Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... ’s judicial ouster, the PML-N has hunkered down and devised a new political strategy: the rule of the Sharifs as far as the eye can see and potentially beyond. Or, as Saad Rafique has boasted, remove one Sharif and the party will bring a second, third and fourth Sharif to replace him.
It is a political party’s right to choose its leader and in the controversial circumstances of Mr Sharif’s dismissal, it was inevitable that the ousted prime minister’s preferences would dominate the succession question. But the utter myopia of the Sharifs is dismaying and politically worrying.
Three decisions the PML-N has had to make since Mr Sharif’s ouster and not one of them has been necessary or wise. The first is to instal Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as a stopgap prime minister. Why? Mr Abbasi and many of his colleagues in the erstwhile federal cabinet are perfectly capable of running the government until the general election scheduled for next year.
After all, the PML-N never ceases to remind the nation of its governance credentials and experienced team. The only, and obvious, disqualification of Mr Abbasi and his colleagues for being a PML-N prime minister for a day longer than necessary is that their surnames are not Sharif.
In the 70th year of the country’s existence, the party that usurped the name of the party of Mohammad Ali Jinnah is a nepotistic disgrace. The decision to summarily elevate the younger Sharif brother from Punjab 1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots.... to the centre is also politically problematic.
Shahbaz Sharif ...Pak dynastic politician, brother of PM Nawaz Sharif, chief minister of Punjab... ’s desire to play a role at the federal level has been well known in political circles for many years. But he was thwarted -- and denied federal executive experience that could have proved useful today -- because of his brother’s determination to remain prime minister and not have the distraction of a potential rival power centre in the federal capital.
He has been an MNA before, in 1990, but when he is likely sworn in as one again two months from now, it will be to a vastly different parliament and power structure in Islamabad. In truth, Shahbaz Sharif as prime minister is a political experiment that could spectacularly backfire.
Finally, there is the truly unsettling possibility of Hamza Sharif discarding his MNA robes and returning to the Punjab Assembly to take over from his father. Like the House of Saud, the House of Sharifs appears to be preparing for an intergenerational transfer of power.
Perhaps the only temporary grace is that Maryam Nawaz is not part of the immediate succession plans, though that may change. Truly, the Sharifs have morphed into something worse than the Bhuttos.
