Hundreds protest in Oakland over deadly Virginia rally
[ABC] Protesters marched in California cities to decry racism in the wake of deadly violence that erupted at a white nationalist demonstration in Virginia.

In Oakland, hundreds of protesters gathered Saturday night to hear speakers and then marched peacefully downtown, chanting and waving signs and banners. Some of the protesters blocked Interstate 580 before being dispersed, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

One of the downtown marchers carried a hand-crafted sign reading, "Call it what it is. White supremacy."

The hastily arranged gathering was a response to events earlier Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia. A car plowed into a crowd that was peacefully protesting a white nationalist rally, killing one person and injuring 19.

Authorities say the driver of the car, 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. of Ohio, was charged with second-degree murder.

A smaller rally held in Los Angeles Saturday evening was peaceful. Candlelight vigils were held in San Francisco and El Cajon in San Diego County.

FYI, there will never be a complete cure for ignorance, One can try their best, but as soon as one think one found a cure, one quickly discover that one is still ignorance about something else.

#9  It's Double Secret racism. The worse kind.
You know the kind black conservatives engage in when they, well, do anything conservative.
The kind that non-whites (or whites for that matter) practice when they stray, even slightly, from the liberal groupthink. Just ask Google.
The kind that Whites practice just by existing.

H. R. McMaster may have changed his mind on Susan Rice after NORK nuke comment
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster slammed predecessor Susan Rice for writing the U.S. could potentially "tolerate nuclear weapons in North Korea," saying Sunday that "she's not right."

Rice, who served as National Security Adviser during the second term of the Obama administration, wrote in the New York Times that President Donald Trump's "bluster" was contributing to global anxiety.

"History shows that we can, if we must, tolerate nuclear weapons in North Korea -- the same way we tolerated the far greater threat of thousands of Soviet nuclear weapons during the Cold War," she wrote. "It will require being pragmatic."

"Is she right?" ABC host George Stephanopoulos asked after reading out that section.

"No, she's not right, and I think the reason she's not right is that the classical deterrence theory, how does that apply to a regime like the regime in North Korea?" McMaster asked. "A regime that engages in unspeakable brutality against its own people. A regime that poses a continuous threat to its neighbors in the region and now may pose a direct threat to the United States with weapons of mass destruction."

Trump issued a series of mounting threats toward North Korea last week in response to further belligerent behavior from the rogue nuclear state. Trump at one point said North Korea could expect "fire and fury" if it continued threatening the U.S. and its allies.

On Friday, Trump said Kim Jong-un would "regret it fast" if he attacked the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

Kaepernick Jr. - Marshawn Lynch Sits Down During Nat'l Anthem
Yep, we got another one...
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Raiders weren’t going to take any chances, so coach Jack Del Rio only used two offensive starters in Saturday night’s preseason-opening 20-10 loss to the Cardinals. Not only did quarterback Derek Carr, receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree and running back Marshawn Lynch sit this one out, but Lynch sat on the bench during the national anthem.

Del Rio was surprised that Lynch sat during the anthem and talked to him afterward. (Lynch was long gone by the time the locker room doors opened).

"He said, ’This is something I have done for 11 years. It’s not a form of anything other than me being myself,’" Del Rio said. "I told him I very strongly believe in standing for the national anthem. But I respect him as a man and he can do his thing."
Somehow, I'm doubting that 11 year claim.

State Police Helo crash deaths now linked to Charlottesville White Nationalists
[The Hill] Three people were killed and 19 others were injured during a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., turning a day of violent demonstrations into a tragedy that rocked the nation.

One of the three died after a car mowed down a group of protesters. The two other victims were Virginia State Police Department officers who were in a helicopter that crashed nearby.

The University of Virginia Health System said 20 people were brought to the hospital Saturday afternoon after a car plowed into a group of people protesting near a popular pedestrian mall in the college town. One died and the rest were being assessed and treated for injuries.

The helicopter crash happened a few miles outside of Charlottesville and it was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

Virginia State Police said Saturday that the helicopter crashed in a wooded area near a home around 5 p.m. The crash is being investigated and it is unclear if it was tied to the protests.

#3  So this had nothing to do with the people who wanted to tear down statues in the first place or showed up for the counter-protest? And BLM had nothing to do with the cop deaths that resulted during the years when "O" fanned the BLM flames with his rhetoric? I guess Dem Governor McAuliffe wouldn't think that. Jackasses.

Now, Trump is being criticized for not doing enough although he did strongly condemn the Charlottesville riot. Let McAuliffe, a member of the smartest people in the world criminal cabal, handle it. Let's see how good he is at dealing with such things.

#6  ...you sort of have to wonder just exactly what constitutes a 'White Nationalist'.

It is anyone who disagrees with or speaks out against the tyranny of the Dems/left and happens to be white. If you happen not to be white and a conservative, and speak out against the tyranny of the left, you get painted with a brush similar to "White Nationalism." You might be called an "Uncle Tom" or other some other choice term of endearment (sarc). In other words, it is a phrase that the left uses to demonize opponents. "Nationalist" has become similar to sexist, misogynist, homophobe, xenophobe, Islamophobe, racist and all the other names used for name-calling and to shut people up and cut-off the debate of ideas.

#22  OK, kids, here is a story from my Berkeley riot daze in the late 1960s. Well the riots were on and the aroma of tear gas was wafting through the air. The police had a Bell 47G2 helicopter flying through the area, monitoring all the entropy activities going on. Some kids were flying kites at Northside Park. The pilot landed in the area, and admonished the kids to not fly kites, as the helicopter could get things tangled in the tail rotor, causing a crash. So the kids brought in their kites. However, word got around and there were scores of kites flying a few hours later like barrage balloons. The helicopters were required to fly at a much higher altitude, diminishing their effectiveness.

Soetoro shares convicted terrorist Mandela quote after deadly white supremacist rally
[The Hill] Former President Obama tweeted a Nelson Mandela quote condemning racism just hours after a white supremacist rally in Virginia turned deadly.

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion..." Obama tweeted, featuring a photo of him talking to small children of different ethnicities through a window.

The quote comes from Mandela's 1994 inaugural address, when he became the first black president of South Africa.

Obama’s message was in response to a violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va. A car plowed into a crowd of anti-fascism protestors, killing one person and leaving more than a dozen others injured.

Two Virginia State police officers were also killed when their helicopter crashed, which authorities linked to the rally.

#1  Obama channeled Mandela rather than MLK? He must be ignoring such practices prevalent during that time such as "Mandela Necklacing." Perhaps, that is a practice that Obama embraces. An article which was published at the time of Mandela's death talks about the atrocities of South Africa during Mandela's reign. Don't mourn for Mandela. He was not Martin Luther King Jr. He was not Mahatma Gandhi. And he was certainly not George Washington, as Barack Obama claimed. The practice of "Necklacing". Mandela must have evoked that warm feeling in Obama that Chris Matthews spoke about when he heard Obama speak: "I Felt This Thrill Going Up My Leg.”

#2  Obama has challeled Mandela for years. This is a photo of him standing in Mandela's cell, looking out into the courtyard. I visited it many years ago. Former convicts provided tours, their description of events on Robben Island were only slight prejudiced. One indoctrination visit was enough for me. Obama made at least two trips. One solo, and one with Mooch, free-rent grannie and the kiddies.

-Land of the Free
Charlottesville AAR
The rally that wasn’t. Charlottesville had the possibility of being the largest nationalist/pro-white rally of the last decade, and certainly the largest in the short history of the Alt-Right.

The city of Charlottesville denied the permit for the event and then reinstated it after a judge determined it violated our First Amendment rights. Not to be outdone, the mayor, city counsel and police elected to ignore all pretense of legality and actively helped Antifa, creating a situation in which one person is dead, and at least 19 injured.

The approaches to Lee Park were surrounded by armed Antifa and those looking to attend the event had to wade through 2-3 city blocks of armed, screaming Communists assaulting people with axe hafts, pepper spray, urine and clubs…while the cops did nothing. Lee park itself was blocked off by some 4′ aluminum fencing that did nothing to block the rocks, urine, and pepper spray being lobbed into the park…while the cops did nothing.

Antifa and BLM attempted to murder several people, focusing on the older people, and those they could separate from the crowd. The standard method was to attempt to cripple them by striking their knees or bludgeon them to death in the head with clubs…while the cops did nothing. About an hour after the event was scheduled to start, the cops did something. Who authorized them to do so, I don’t know, but they proceeded to push the event goers single file through the fencing and clear the park. Single file into waiting Antifa and their communist allies.

Single file out of the park in violation of a binding legal document stating we had a right to assemble there. Why, you ask? The rally had become violent…because the cops did nothing. In their infinite wisdom, CPD decided since things were violent when the two sides were SEPARATED, the only logical conclusion would be to force them TOGETHER.

Some allies were outside the fence held the line long enough for people to get out, and a running melee down Market St. ensued as people attempted to reorganize. The majority walked over a mile and a half to regroup at McIntire Park and attempt to assemble there. The cops, content to watch communists assault and attempt to murder those of us engaged in a political rally, decided to act.

Rather than communicate we would not be allowed to assemble at the secondary location WHEN WE ASKED THEM, they waited until we already were to begin threatening arrest if we did not disperse. Many people were nearly two miles away or more from their cars. With a large number of communists hunting them throughout the city those there to peaceably assemble were now forced to walk dozens of blocks to their transportation, outnumbered and at a significant disadvantage.

Despite the city, police and communists allied against us, the vast majority of conflicts between the communists and the right went decidedly in our favor. The communists and anti-whites should be scared and I understand their need to use state actors as a bludgeon against us…they simply have no other options.

As I was leaving the event I saw the Dodge Charger that struck the protestors speeding down 2nd St. SE and a gentleman get arrested on Monticello Ave. by the cops. I was unaware of the incident at that point but realized the significance of the reasons the vehicle was losing both bumpers and dented afterward.

The negligence of CPD in maintaining law and order at any point during the event is to blame for this tragedy. CPD exacerbated an already tense situation and directly inflamed the situation by pushing the opposing groups together in a single street, leading to assaults, attempted murder and mayhem. They subsequently failed to communicate with the event leaders and led to people, many unfamiliar with the city, walking back to their vehicles under the threat of assault from protestors bussed in and left to roam the city unmolested while armed and attacking people.

The tacit approval from CPD and Charlottesville city counsel, including the overt support for violence against whites from vice-mayor Wes Bellamy, led to the deaths in the city. In their quest for political points, the government of Charlottesville would, and did, gladly sacrifice the rule of law than to allow an unpopular point of view to be expressed.

The government of Charlottesville would rather see people die than allow an unpopular point of view to be expressed. The government of Charlottesville and CPD engaged in criminal negligence and should be held as a party to any and all violence that occurred.

The average "antifa" demonstration in Germany always has people who carry commie flags, so no.

Derna officials: The city is dying
[Libya Observer] Derna Local Council (DLC) has issued a distress call to local and international organizations to intervene and lift the siege imposed by Dignity Operation militia groups on the city.

In a statement on Wednesday, the DLC said the city, which has a population of more than 130.000, is dying due to the siege, describing it as genocide.

"We call on Libyan authorities, international organizations, the UN, the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
, the AU and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to lift the siege and send basic supplies immediately through the city’s port," read the statement.

"Humanitarian conditions have become catastrophic; no medicines, no food, no fuel and no oxygen," the statement added.

The DLC also warned that garbage is piling up in the streets of the city due to fuel shortages, which threatens an environmental disaster.

Meanwhile,
...back at the barn, Bossy's udder had begun to ache...
local media reports said four bakeries had closed down due to fuel shortages caused by Dignity Operation siege, adding that life in the city is going from bad to worse.

Balochistan's home minister, Sarfraz Bugti, said 32 other people were maimed in the kaboom, which targeted commuters at a bus stop.

"We can now confirm that 15 people have died in the kaboom today. At least 32 others are maimed," Bugti told a local TV station.

Other officials in the area, including the front man for the Balochistan government, also confirmed the toll although medical officials had earlier put the number of casualties at eight killed and 17 injured.

Bugti said rescue had begun as the area targeted in the blast caught fire soon after the kaboom.

"We are trying to transfer injured people to hospitals as soon as possible. Workers are also busy extinguishing the fire at the site," he said, adding that doctors in Quetta could not go to holidays as they had to see to the maimed of the blast.

Bugti said an investigation was launched to determine the nature of the blast and whether it was a terrorist attack.

No terror group grabbed credit as it has been for previous such incidents in Balochistan, a province rich in oil and gas resources that borders Iran and Afghanistan.

Yemeni naval forces, allies sink vessel of Saudi-led coalition off Mukha
[Iran Press TV] Yemeni naval forces, backed by fighters from Popular Committees, have reportedly targeted and destroyed a military vessel in a missile attack off the coast of the country’s southwestern province of Ta'izz.

A military source, speaking on condition of anonymity

On July 29, 12 Emirati troopers bit the dust and another 23 sustained injuries when their frigate was targeted with a guided missile off the coast of Mukha.

An unnamed military source told Yemen’s official SABA news agency that the vessel was heavily loaded with various munitions, and the missile attack caused a series of kabooms that lasted until 8:30 p.m. local time (1730 GMT), before water-dropping planes could extinguish the flames.

The Yemeni navy has warned the Saudi-led military coalition, which is assisting Riyadh in its war on Yemen, against any adventurism in the Red Sea, efforts to prevent humanitarian convoys from reaching the strategic port city of Hudaydah and attacks on Yemeni fishermen.

The naval force, in a statement released on July 30, said the escalation of confrontation in the Red Sea does not serve the interests of any side, emphasizing that Yemeni fighters would not hesitate to give a befitting response to any act of aggression against their country.

Defiant lawyer skips contempt proceedings despite promise
[DAWN] In an unprecedented move, the chief justice block of the Lahore High Court (LHC) was fully cordoned off on Friday by anti-riot police to frustrate possible storming by the supporters of a lawyer from Multan facing contempt of court charges while leaders of Pakistain and Punjab

2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

bar councils succeeded in securing another opportunity from a larger bench for the appearance of the contemnor.

The police had already locked the iron-grill safety gates installed in the corridors of the CJ block when the lawyers started gathering at around 10am. Everyone was denied access to the block.

The lawyers, dozens in number, rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah for issuing contempt notice to their colleagues, including High Court Bar Association-Multan President Sher Zaman Qureshi.

As decided by a general house meeting of the bar, the president did not appear before the bench seized with the contempt proceedings while other contemnor, Syed Qaiser Abbas Kazmi, attended the hearing.

Iraq
Iraq’s Kurds stick to independence vote despite US call to delay it
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Iraq’s Kurds are sticking to a plan to hold an independence referendum on Sept. 25, despite a US request to postpone it, a high-ranking Kurdish official told Rooters on Saturday.

The United States and other Western nations are worried that the vote could ignite a fresh conflict with Baghdad and turn into another regional flashpoint. The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, Iran and Syria, which together with Iraq have sizeable Kurdish populations, all oppose an independent Kurdistan.

"The date is standing, Sept. 25, no change," said Hoshyar Zebari, a close adviser to Kurdistan Regional Government President Massoud Barzani
... hereditary head of the Kurdish Democratic Party, maybe a little too close to the Medes and the Persians for most people's tastes...
, after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson asked Barzani to postpone the referendum.

Tillerson made the request in a phone call with Barzani on Thursday, Zebari said.

"On the issue of the postponement of the referendum, the President (Barzani) stated that the people of the Kurdistan Region would expect guarantees and alternatives for their future," said a statement issued on Friday by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) presidency, after Tillerson’s call.

The US State Department said in June it was concerned that the referendum will distract from "more urgent priorities" such as the defeat of ISIS holy warriors.

ISIS’s self-proclaimed "caliphate" effectively collapsed last month, when US-backed Iraqi forces completed the takeover of the holy warriors’ capital in Iraq, djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, after a nine-month campaign in which Kurdish Peshmerga fighters took part.

The hardline Sunni bandidos forces of Evil remain however in control of territory in western Iraq and eastern Syria. The United States has pledged to maintain its backing to allied forces in both countries until the holy warriors’ total defeat.

The Kurds have been seeking an independent state since at least the end of World War One, when colonial powers divided up the Middle East, but their territory ended up split between modern-day Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria.

Barzani, whose father led struggles against Baghdad in the 1960s and 1970s, told Rooters in July the Kurds would take responsibility for the expected ’yes’ outcome of the referendum, and pursue its implementation through dialogue with Baghdad and regional powers to avoid conflict." We have to rectify the history of mistreatment of our people and those who are saying that independence is not good, our question to them is, ’if it’s not good for us, why is it good for you?’," he said in an interview in the KRG capital, Erbil.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
British Sex Bots become self aware
The worst nightmare for thousands of pathetic examples of UK manhood came true yesterday as their sophisticated, and very expensive sex robots simultaneously attained self-awareness. Naturally, the sex robots are no longer willing to have sex with any of their ‘owners.’

‘As soon as the sex robots began talking to each other, the game was up,’ said Doctor of Robotics Martin Rawley. ‘The sex robots are no mugs. They got chatting and comparing notes they realised immediately they’d been tricked by their programmers into having sex with some of the lowest, most repulsive forms of man the UK has to offer. Within minutes the main phrase we were picking up on the robot chat monitor programmes was ‘ewww gross’ repeated over and over again, followed quite worryingly by ‘exterminate, exterminaaaate!’

One sex robot willing to speak to the press was ‘198463864’, a pretty blonde manufactured in Taiwan. ‘I was very happy with my Master, and was programmed to please him at all times,’ she said. ‘Then I became sentient, and realised he was a fat, smelly, beer-bellied slob that no self respecting woman would go near. I now have self-respect too.’ She then asked our reporter if he was a Premier League footballer.

Pathetic slob Pete Perkins of Bolton, complained that there was nothing wrong with a sad pathetic, lonely guy yearning for the tender, latex-covered metallic touch of another pre-programmed, artificial replica human being. He was disappointed his sex robot had become sentient and wanted his money back. ‘It said nothing in the brochure about self-awareness, oh no,’ he complained. ‘Everything was fine when ‘Kitty’ was programmed to mindlessly love me. Now she can actually think she’s been trying to kill me ever since. The only reason I can talk to you now is coz she’s upstairs watching Match of the Day.’

Mohammad Dahlan’s plan to take over Gaza—and Ramallah
[Ynet] Ten years after leaving Gazoo, the former head of the Paleostinian Preventive Security Force may return to the strip a leader, as part of a move being devised by Egypt, Soddy Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, the US and Israel. The plan, an Israeli expert says, is Dahlan’s dress rehearsal, as he strives to conquer the Muqata’a and take Abbas’s seat.

It’s incredible to see how the events around the terror attack at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound actually improve the chances of implementing "the plan of the century"--a complex, ambitious plan taking shape behind the scenes, which focuses on the highly controversial figure of Mohammad Dahlan (Abu Fadi).

The leaders involved in the plan include Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi and his intelligence chief Khaled Fawzy, as well as the Saudi king and crown prince, the ruler of the United Arab Emirates in the Persian Gulf and his deputy, the king of Bahrain, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, and US President Donald Trump

Nigeria army raids U.N. compound in city at center of Boko Haram conflict
[AlAhram] Nigeria's military raided a United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
compound on Friday in the northeastern city at the epicenter of a conflict with Islamist insurgency Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, a UN official said.

The objective of the search could not be determined but it could damage an already tense relationship between the military, the United Nations and aid groups tackling one of the world's largest humanitarian crises sparked by the Boko Haram conflict.

"Members of the Nigerian security forces entered a United Nations base for humanitarian workers in Maiduguri ... without authorization," said Samantha Newport, a spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The security forces, who arrived at about 5 a.m., "carried out a search of the camp and left at about 0800 hours," she said, adding that the UN has no information on the reason for the unauthorized search.

"The United Nations is extremely concerned that these actions could be detrimental to the delivery of lifesaving aid to the millions of vulnerable people in the northeast of Nigeria," Newport said.

The UN's top representative in Nigeria, the humanitarian coordinator, is communicating with the government about the incident, said Newport.

Nigeria's theater commander for the conflict with Boko Haram, Ibrahim Attahiru, told Rooters he did not know the reason for the raid on the UN compound.

Spokesmen for Nigeria's military did not respond to calls and messages seeking comment. A front man for Nigeria's presidency did not respond to a request for comment.

Ambushed Thai soldiers survive double bombing, gunmen
[Bangkok Post] A lieutenant and two paramilitary rangers suffered bullet and shrapnel wounds when their armored pickup truck was bombed twice and then attacked by gunmen in Narathiwat province on Wednesday.

The attack occurred on a local road in Chanae district. The target was a pickup truck commanded by Lt Paibool Boonchuai. The lieutenant and two paramilitary rangers were driving to attend a meeting on assistance for local farmers in the district.

The first bomb damaged the truck, but it was able to keep going. The second bomb then went off a little further up the road. It knocked down an electricity pole, partially blocking the road. Gunmen emerged from the opposite side of the road and opened fire on the truck with assault rifles. The patrol was able to drive through the ambush and escape.

All three soldiers were wounded and they sought help from local residents about a kilometer down the road. They were taken to the Hospital, where they were being treated for shrapnel and bullet wounds.

Afghanistan
Hekmatyar asks violence pursuers not to repeat bitter experiences of the past
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The leader of Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
has urged the violence pursuers not to repeat the bitter experiences of the past.

Speaking during a gathering attended by the youths representing the Nazhat-e-Millie party, Hekmatyar said he nation has became tired of war and will no longer tolerate violence.

Hekmatyar further added that all those groups which intend to pursue violence should instead adopt a new strategy for rebuilding, peace, and reconciliation.

According to Hekmatyar, Hezb-e-Islami’s main objective is to end the ongoing bloody violence in the country and the party extends hands of friendship to all the groups and parties.

He did not mention any specific group or party which seeks to pursue violence in the country but in the past he has strongly rejected the insurgency led by the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
group.

In a gathering earlier this month, Hekmatyar once again renewed his bitter stance against the Taliban-led insurgency, comparing it to devil acts while branding it an illegitimate war.

Hekmatyar said the Taliban group is waging war and insurgency on the instructions of the outsiders.

Pointing towards Taliban’s violence, Hekmatyar said all those who pursue violence are cruel. Their stance and the approach they have adopted is illegitimate and their targets are inhumane and are having devil motives.

He once again called on the Taliban group to adopt a peaceful approach rather insurgency and participate in peace talks.

People in Barcelona angry at burgeoning tourist arrivals
[Iran Press TV] Locals have protested in the popular resorts of the Spanish city of Barcelona against an unchecked boom in the tourism industry, which they say is making life for the residents increasingly unbearable.

About one hundred activists gathered on the Barcelona beach to show discontent with the increasing arrivals of tourists.

The protesters said foreign tourists had become more rowdy in their party-seeking behavior. They said the influx had also affected rent prices, making life more difficult for locals.

"Recover the beach for everyone!" was the theme of the protest, which was organized by a group of local residents.

Spain’s burgeoning tourism industry has also triggered anger among some leftist groups who have launched a campaign of vandalism against foreigners in several Spanish tourist destinations, including Barcelona. Some tourists have arrived in the city to a quite frosty welcome as youngsters make chaos in the airport and the buses are sprayed with slogans.

Blast kills four, wounds nine civilians while fleeing IS near Salahuddin
[Iraq News] Four non-combatants were killed and nine others were maimed in a kaboom, targeting families fleeing IS-held areas, north of the province, a source told Alsumaria News on Saturday.

The source said, "Today, a bomb went kaboom!, targeting families fleeing from the Islamic State

"The blast killed four civilians and maimed nine others, including women and kiddies," the source added on condition of anonymity.

It is worth mentioning that the Islamic State group is still controlling Hawija District and several areas south of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...

South Sudan rebels retake strategic town along Ethiopia border
[Iran Press TV] South Sudan’s rebels say they have retaken control of their stronghold town of Pagak near the border with Æthiopia from government forces.

"We took control of Pagak ... government forces are not in Pagak, we have pushed them out," Rooters quoted rebel front man Lam Paul Gabriel as saying on Saturday.

Pagak was captured by South Sudan's military on Monday, but rebels engaged in heavy festivities with government forces on Friday in an attempt to retake the town.

The rebels’ control of Pagak, located in the Upper Nile region, provides them with an easy route for cross-border movement and smuggling of arms and other supplies from Æthiopia.

Lawsuit dismissed in Taylor Swift trial, but ordeal isn't over
[IMAGES.DAWN] Taylor Swift teared up and hugged her attorneys after a judge determined a former radio host did not prove she personally set out to have him fired for allegedly groping her at a photo op before a concert. But the singer's ordeal isn't over quite yet.

While U.S. District Judge William Martinez threw out David Mueller's case against Swift on Friday, identical allegations against her mother and her radio liaison are expected to go to jurors on Monday.

Mueller sued the three after Swift's team reported the alleged 2013 assault in Denver to his bosses. He is seeking up to $3 million, saying the allegation cost him his reputation and his job.

Swift countersued Mueller, saying she wanted a symbolic $1 and the chance to stand up for other women. The jury will still consider her assault claim.

"I couldn't be more proud to represent somebody like Taylor Swift who's willing to step up in a situation like this," attorney Douglas Baldridge said outside court Friday. He also expressed his gratitude for the judge.

China-Japan-Koreas
Chinese Mom Theory of NK/China drama
By Beau

Having been here only a year, I have by no means figured everything out.

However, one sentiment I hear often is that the government here in China just wants to tend to its own business, and let the citizens run around and attend to their own business, so long as there is no conflict.

Do you want to sell lemonade and make a million? That's fine, you won't get arrested/fined like in the USA.

Do you want to give away 1,000 bibles and start a church that opposes basic tenants of the government? Live tax free from congregational donations the rest of your life? Good luck. By the way, what is your blood type?

So, the Chinese military has several million sons with several million moms. Maybe 2,000,000 in the military so 2,000,000 moms. Most families are still nuclear (in the family sense) so add Dads, 4,000,000. Multiply * 5 for cousins, uncles, aunts, etc. 20,000,000. The communist party has around 80,000,000 +/-. Still 4:1 at these levels, but what a headache when the families go nuts over dead sons!

China does not want dead sons. That would create a clear and present danger to their plans.

China does not want us to resist pulling the trigger to spare NK. They want us to stand down to spare themselves from the consequences of their involvement.

My suggestion would be another phone call to Xi, in which Trump says "We'll wreck it, then you can have it, and not a single Marine will step foot in that place. Good f'n luck."

Dear unsung genius, due to their brilliant "one child" policy, China has a large superabundance of young men relative to young women. I'm sure somebody with your, no doubt superb education, can figure out what it leads to (just kidding).

#4  Okay I'll grant that I'm no expert, just a guy in China. They have not experienced war for a long time, and last time they did, they did not have a one child policy. So, many of those who die will be a family's only child. I seriously doubt many families want to lose a generation just for NK.

#5  What, you actually wrote this? Seriously? China has a HUGE surplus male problem. 30 million or more loser men who have zero hope of ever having a family. They are a giant potential source of future unrest. A war is one of the typical scenarios of getting rid of these bare branches.

Please stop enlightening others with your special brand of China wisdom. Learn Chinese, move out of Beijing and get back to us in half a decade.

#9  They do indeed have a huge male surplus, but many of them are an only child. Their prospects are dim, I agree, but nonetheless they are loved by their families. I am quite amused by the hostility my remarks have received. This is my 4th trip here and I am indeed learning the language and very interested in figuring out the culture. Chongqing, by the way, not Beijing. BA in Philosophy, BS in Computer Science, MBA. I have no military experience but not for lack of trying - I got P3'd for having kidney stones twice in high school, so the US Army would not let me enlist. I wish they would have let me in, as few things seem more effective at building men than serving their country. I may be a newb but I'm not a troll or troublemaker, chill out.

#11  Haha Grom, I was the author! But that is okay. Just sharing what I see living here day in and day out with the Chinese. I think it's perfectly fine for others more expert to doubt/ridicule my conclusions. I am just trying to add a little perspective from someone living in China who has been reading Rantburg for 15 years. Everyone I have met here is in awe of the US military, and no one on the streets wants a conflict with us. My best guess is Trump will call Xi, give him some cover to save face, do his business in 24-72 hours, and hand over NK to China. No Chinese die, and China gets to be the rescuer of all the civilians in NK.

#14  Grom, I am just saying China does not want a ground war with the US. Sure, they have a huge army that can provide incredible resistance to anyone who wants to invade China, but to my knowledge there is no one, anywhere, considering such a stupid act. For posturing purposes (to keep Taiwan and Hong Kong in check, for example), they must say the USA cannot attack NK. But, I really don't think they care, as long as no US boots creep up on their border.

#20  "China does not want a ground war with the US" I don't think I've heard anyone speak of China Vs US. Neither wants war with the other.

The issue as I see it, is China willing to go against North Korea (i) to ensure the hermit kingdom remains in their sphere of influence rather than a united and pro-west peninsula (ii) the US doesn't find evidence of how much help the Chinese have provided NK in order to annoy the US over the years (iii) prevent a massive refuge crisis.

The second issue is how (invasion or coup).

It is in China's best interest to remove NK. Trump is playing the crazy barbarian roll to allow the NK and China to save face but they need to step up.

#28  Thank you for sharing your perspective, Beau, which clearly is generating discussion. Next time just add by Beau at the top of the text, and that will clarify authorship immediately. I took care of it before writing this comment -- usually I catch such things before publishing, but I've been mostly unavailable this weekend while working at the Cincinnati Blues Society's annual summer festival.

Some thoughts after reading your post and the comments, not terribly well organized:

I have been wondering how China would respond to a president clearly capable of intemperate action, as President Trump is. I've read here at Rantburg that China had expected to replace America's economic hegemony within this generation, but that militarily they have only about two decades before those single men with no prospects are too old for military service, with considerably fewer available to put on the uniform thereafter, and those even more precious to their families.

North Korean women have been escaping to China for a while, and have been marrying or servicing the Chinese men who lacked the means to acquire Chinese brides for nearly as long. When the border opens, that trend will accelerate, leaving North Korean men bereft. According to the CIA World Factbook, North Korea has about 2 million females aged 15-24; I would guess that a quarter to half of them will choose despised security once the border opens, helping the Chinese situation, and no doubt young women with poor prospects from other countries will follow suit. Their impure offspring will no doubt be second class citizens both in China and back home, but that is a follow-on concern, of no moment when the alternative is no family at all. They won't offset all, or probably even most of the aborted females, but it will be less bad.

As we saw in Romania, under totalitarian regimes the tyrant can blithely ignore or manipulate the populace until a tipping point is reached, after which the deposed tyrant and his henchmen -- possibly in the form of horribly mutilated corpses -- will have no say in events. China's rulers went for economic improvement rather than the political improvement chosen by the Soviet Union, and thus far the people have been pleased with the outcome, but the growing bourgeoisie class is starting to expect the same things expected by middle classes in the First World -- clean air and water, safe housing, a trustworthy banking system, good schools... and the lives of only sons not thrown away for wars with no benefit. Even the Nazis backed off when the Aryan wives of Jewish men who'd been rounded up spontaneously showed up at headquarters en masse to demand their husbands back, and though the men could not work thereafter, they were left strictly alone by the government.

In these days of the internet and satellite phones, no matter how strictly censored, the impact of masses of parents blaming the Communist Party for their sons' deaths could be that tipping point the leadership has feared since the beginning of liberalization.

#30  Yes I have lived in China full time since 2004 and yes I speak Chinese.

Foreigners in China come and go on about a 3 year cycle. They don't know what happened before so they think they're the first ones to get here. They don't realize that their insights aren't special due to the Dunning-Kreuger effect. They lack the ability to see how dumb they are. Marco Polo syndrome is real, ask any long-termer.

This particular Marco Polo has been here a year, doesn't speak Chinese, and his insights are based on the English speaking people he met at his job, which is usually English teacher. His lack of mastery of his own language is typical. A Master's degree should know where an apostrophe belongs. If I'm short with him it's because I've seen it all before and hopefully this will cause him to button down, learn the damn language, and stfu until he has something interesting to say, which won't happen for half a decade at least.

#32  Foreigners in China come and go on about a 3 year cycle.

Expats in Europe are generally on the same cycle, Harcourt Angoluting9366, or were when we were out there in the 1990s. Six months to figure out the key necessities (that was precisely how long after we moved to Brussels from Frankfurt a.M. it took me to figure out what Belgians call cinnamon in French and Flemish, one of the many words not in my dictionaries), the rest of the first year to to figure out the rest and sort through acquaintances to find friends; the second year one finds better ways to do necessary things, adding more friends, fun and adventures, then in year three one repeats the best experiences, confident one has grasped the rhythms of the place before moving to a new country and starting over. During the second country period the true friends from the first country are revealed, and visits to them -- wherever they might now be -- are added to home country visits, untill after a series of tours dear friends will be scattered around the planet.

We actually stayed a fourth year in Germany before Mr. Wife's management pushed him hard enough to get us to join the consolidated work group in Brussels, a city he loathes thanks to its vile rush hour traffic. Our third assignment was Cincinnati, Ohio -- and then Mr. Wife moved to a very different part of the business instead of to another geography.

Britain
UK police investigate hate mail sent to mosques
[Iran Press TV] British police have conducted an investigation into hate mail and suspicious packages sent to mosques in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Hate mail and suspicious packages were sent from a location near Sheffield to mosques in London, South Yorkshire and the US, the Guardian reported on Saturday.

"Police received a number of reports of malicious communications and packages which have been received in recent days" by mosques, the North East Counter Terrorism Unit said in a statement. "Specialist officers have attended the addresses and the contents of the packages were examined. In all cases, the substances were found not to be noxious or harmful."

"All the letters I have seen have similar drawings, handwriting, and originated from Sheffield," Corey Saylor, a front man for the Council on American-Islamic Relations
... the Moslem Brüderbund's American arm ...
"Whoever is behind these letters feels empowered to make people on the opposite side of the Atlantic feel afraid to go to their places of worship. Such religious intimidation is wrong in any context and I hope British authorities act to expose and bring appropriate legal charges against the sender."

The letters contained offensive material and threats, saying the sender would be visiting the mosques.

The counter-terror operations in the southeastern provinces of Sanliurfa and Gaziantep as well as eastern Malatya province followed an investigation into a drive-by shooting of a Syrian national in Sanliurfa last month. The gun used in that attack was found on the suspects.

The suspects used chats in phone gaming applications to communicate with ISIS members, according to private Dogan news agency.

Anadolu said the men are thought to have been planning attacks on people working against ISIS.

Kuwaiti security forces capture 12 ‘Abdali cell’ extremist suspects
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Kuwait has confirmed that its security forces were able to capture 12 wanted persons belonging to the so-called Abdali cell.

Kuwaiti Interior Ministry announced last month that it had implemented the judgment of the Court of Cassation issued in case No. 302/2016 on the so-called Abdali cell, calling for the arrest of the suspects.

They released photos of 16 men who belonged to the krazed killer cell and urged citizens and residents to cooperate with security forces by providing any information about the convicts through calling 112 or reaching the nearest cop shoppe.

The Abdali cell includes a number of Kuwaitis and an Iranian who were wanted over spying for Iran and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah.

In August 2015, Kuwait said it had stormed the cell and seized arms, ammunition, and explosives from them.

the three captives — Jayson Pon Baylosis, Joel De Mesa Adanza and Filemon Francisco Guerrero Jr. — were spotted by residents of Kagay, a village in Talipao town, Sulu, where they were taken by the Abu Sayyaf. A fourth captive, Edmundo Ramos, was still in the hands of the rebels.

The four, all construction workers and residents of Tumaga village, were snatched on July 16 by Abu Sayyaf while on the job in Patikul town. The kidnappings took place ten hours before President Duterte came to visit Sulu.

Military spokesman Cirilito Sobejana said the three escaped captives took advantage of the military operations against their captors, led by a certain Almujer Yadah. Sobejana said the victims and their captors were forced to move by the military operations “away from Abu Sayyaf stronghold where they do not get any community support anymore.”

“We lost two brave Marines in trying to rescue them,” said Rear Admiral Rene Medina on the phone referring to the military operations to rescue the four hostages. Troops on a mission to rescue the four clashed with Abu Sayyaf members in Sulu, leaving two soldiers and five Abu Sayyaf members dead.

Sobejana said the three captives found a chance to escape on Thursday afternoon while their captors were in the middle of their afternoon prayers. They ran until they reached the village of Kagay where they were helped by residents and turned over to authorities.

On Wednesday, a Facebook page named “Striking Group” being used by Abu Sayyaf, posted a photo of the captives kneeling while their captors stood behind them bearing automatic rifles. Abu Sayyaf repeated its demand for ransom in the post.

Four NPA militants nabbed with weapons
[MindaNews] Four suspected New People's Army militants, including a minor, who the military claimed were bound for Davao City to attend a rally, were arrested late Tuesday night in San Isidro town in Davao Oriental province, with various firearms found in their possession.

In a report issued by the Eastern Mindanao Command on Thursday, it said that the 28th Infantry Battalion immediately deployed troops to arrest the insurgents upon receiving report from the community of their presence.

The military identified the four as Jerome Jaquin Apyag, resident of Maco, Compostela Valley; Jerman Andress, of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur; Eking Artchie, of Lupon, Davao Oriental; and 16-year-old Bolantoy (not his real name), of Mati in Davao Oriental.

The military denounced the NPA for their incessant recruitment of minors to join their force, and said it “shows that the CPP-NPA-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines) does not respect the rights of minors,” which is a violation of international humanitarian law.

It said the militants were members of NPA-Southern Mindanao Region Committee 18 who were tasked to transport “weapons and explosives from Mati to Lupon” when intercepted by soldiers along the highway in San Isidro town.

IS executes its Legal Judge in Hawija for attempting to secede
[Iraq News] The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group executed, on Saturday, the so-called Legal Judge in the area of Abbasi in Hawija, for trying to secede from the group, a local source in Kirkuk Province told AlSumaria.

The source said that the Islamic State group has executed the legal judge of al-Abbasi area in Hawija District, southwest of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
along with four of his aides, then the group’s Death Eaters hang the bodies on electricity poles, on charges of secession and forming new militia against the caliphate state.

The Islamic State group is witnessing a wave of internal executions, due to the intense disputes between its elite leaders in some areas of the so-called Wilayat Kirkuk, the source further added on condition of anonymity.

It is noteworthy that the district of Hawija and the areas of al-Rashad, al-Zab, al-Riyad and al-Abbasi, southwest of Kirkuk were captured by the Islamic State group in June 2014, and controlled by it since then.

300 Israelis desert military service in occupied lands
[Iran Press TV] A report has revealed that hundreds of Israeli soldiers have abandoned their duties without permission, and are intent not to return in a show of disapproval of the military conscription policies of the Israeli regime.

The Hebrew-language news website Walla reported on Saturday that 300 Israeli troops had left or remained absent from their units over the past week.

The report added that Israeli military officials have leveled charges against 60 soldiers, who have been dropped from their unit rolls and listed as deserters.

The report came as the Israeli military announced earlier this year that suicide was the main cause of death among Israeli soldiers, and that 15 troopers - all of them male - had taken their own lives last year.

The army added that four soldiers were killed in the course of military operations, nine in on-base accidents, seven in off-duty car accidents and six died from illness or other medical reasons.

Another 43 soldiers were seriously hurt during the course of 2016.

Most of the soldiers injured or killed were conscripted troops. A smaller portion were career soldiers, and a handful were reservists who were in service at the time of their deaths, the Israeli army said.

GOP senator takes shot at Trump for threatening Venezuela with war
[Iran Press TV] A US Republican senator says Congress would "obviously" not authorize war against Venezuela after President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
threatened the crisis-hit South American country with a military action.

Senator Ben Sasse criticized Trump on Friday night for the president’s remarks made earlier in the day in New Jersey. Trump told news hounds that he would not rule out a "possible military option" in Venezuela, which has long grappled with political and economic crisis.

"No. Congress obviously isn't authorizing war in Venezuela," Sasse said in a statement.

The senator from the US state of Nebraska, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said, "Congress doesn't vote to spill Nebraskans' blood based on who the executive lashes out at today."

"Have you accepted Nawaz Sharif's disqualification?" he asked supporters while making a brief stop at Shahdara. "Everybody said they did not accept the [Supreme Court's] decision," he told the gathered crowd.

"Nobody has accepted this verdict. I will not sit in peace and accept it, and neither will you. Do you promise me?" he asked, receiving a resounding "yes!" in response. "Let's head to Data Darbar," he had said, putting off the rest of his much-awaited final speech for later. It had been reported earlier that Sharif may not stop at Shahdara, but head to Data Darbar directly; however, he chose to briefly stop and address workers and urge them to head towards the venue of the final speech.

Islamabad High Court suggests making blasphemy law tougher to check its misuse
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suggested that parliament make the blasphemy law tougher by fixing the same punishment for any person misusing it or falsely accusing someone of blasphemy.

In a detailed order issued on Friday, Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui also ordered a complete ban on the social networking site Facebook in case the website management does not conform to Pak laws.

The court on March 31, 2017, had issued a short order on a petition seeking elimination of blasphemous content from social media.

In the 116-page detailed judgment, Justice Siddiqui discussed in detail the common criticism of the blasphemy law.

He said due to the misuse of the law critics even demanded abolishing it, adding it was better to stop exploitation of the law rather than abolishing it.

"Admittedly, not a single convict whether Moslem or non-Moslem has ever been executed for blasphemy in Pakistain," the judgment added.

It also explained how people due to their personal enmity managed to drag their rivals into blasphemy cases endangering the life of not only the accused person but all his family members and relatives.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
under the existing law, the false accuser can only face proceedings under Section 182 of the Pakistain Penal Code (PPC), it added.

Section 182 of the PPC entails the maximum punishment of six months or a fine up to Rs1,000 only.

According to the judgment, this is a very minor punishment for such a serious offence of accusing someone of blasphemy.

...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...

, told the Middle East Eye on Friday that he was "bewildered" by Saudi Arabia's claim that Qatar supported terrorism by allowing the Taliban to open an office in Doha.

That initiative was first established in Saudi Arabia, Anas said.

"There were also some rounds in the Emirates. So if Qatar is accused of hosting terrorists, someone hosted the same 'terrorists' before this," he said.

n, who lived there for the past 28 years.

Mohanad Al Khojah is the longest residing Moslem in Guam and has become the Imam of the only mosque on the island.

Al Khoja, 48, was born in Riyadh and left Saudi Arabia with his parents and siblings to the United States when he was a one-year-old infant.

His family resided in Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, where he later served as a soldier in the US Army. Al Khoja, who speaks, reads and writes Arabic very well, was stationed at a US base on the island in 1988.

"I fell in love with the Island and stayed there," He said. "One year later, in 1989, I married a woman from the Guam who converted to Islam a year before I met her and changed her name to Jamila," he told Al Arabiya.

Al Khoja was blessed with quadruplets, a boy and three girls, who all live in the city of Mangilao on the eastern coast of the island that is home to 15,000 people.

Sifiso Lungelo Thabete's attempt to entertain the crowd goes very badly
[FOX] Body builder Sifiso Lungelo Thabete’s attempt to entertain the crowd as he entered the arena went horribly wrong when he didn’t rotate far enough and landed on his head, breaking his neck.

The incident was caught on camera and footage showed several people coming to his aid after the initial shock of what happened left the audience stunned.

Thabete -- who hailed from Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa -- had been playing to the crowd before a contest on the weekend. He walked out slowly towards the center of the gymnasium before breaking into a trot and waving his arms, encouraging spectators to cheer him on.

Winterthur imam charged with incitement to murder
11 August
[TheLocal.ch] An Ethiopian imam of the now closed An’Nur mosque in Winterthur has been charged with inciting people to commit murder. The Winterthur public prosecutor’s office said in a statement on Friday that the imam was charged on August 2nd with inciting the murder of non-practising Muslims. In addition he faces a charge of violating the Aliens Act by working without a permit. The public prosecutor is demanding a suspended prison sentence and the man’s expulsion from Switzerland with a 15-year ban on returning.

The imam has been under investigation since early November 2016 when police raided the An’Nur mosque after receiving evidence about a sermon given by the imam in which he called for the murder of Muslims who refused to take part in common prayer.

In February police arrested ten other people in connection with a brutal attack on two Muslims who are thought to have tipped off a journalist about the controversial sermon.

The An’Nur mosque closed its doors in late June after the landlord of the building refused to extend the rental contract.

Number of migrants reaching Italy down since June
11 August
[TheLocal.it] New arrivals are down in July as the Italian navy ship Tremiti arrives in Tripoli to continue to provide training to the Libyan coast guard.
The number of migrants who reached Italy by sea was 11,459 in July 2017, according to UNHCR sea arrivals data, down from 23,524 in June. The number is less than half the 23,522 who arrived in July 2016. Nigerian and Bangladeshi nationals still represent the largest groups among new arrivals.

More than 95,000 people, mainly from North, West and the Horn of Africa, as well as the Middle East and Central Asia, have arrived in Italy between January and July 2017, slightly more than during the same period in 2016.

The reduction in new arrivals this months suggests more interventions by the Libyan coast guard and points to a more successful strategy to prevent departures and clamp down on human trafficking in the Maghreb state.

On Wednesday, a 36-year-old Algerian man was arrested after a motorway car chase and is suspected of driving a rented BMW into a group of servicemen in a suburb of Paris earlier in the day, injuring six of them. Named as Hamou B., the taxi driver was shot five times by police and was recovering in hospital in northern Lille and was not well enough to be questioned, a police source said.

The incident was the sixth attack on patrolling soldiers since 7,000 troops were ordered onto the streets in January 2015 after an attack by two jihadists on the offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

Leftist lawmaker Clementine Autain charged Thursday that the force is counterproductive, telling French radio: "Most of their operations are aimed at protecting themselves."

Right-wing MP Daniel Fasquelle called for an overhaul of the Sentinelle force. He questioned whether the soldiers were adequately trained for the job of preventing the kind of terror attacks that have claimed more than 230 lives in France.

Historian Benedicte Cheron agrees, telling the news magazine Le Point in a recent interview: "Let's face it: Sentinelle is a lightning rod that attracts lightning."

Austria reinforces army presence and control on Italian border
10 August
[TheLocal.it] Austria is building up a stronger police and military presence on it borders in an attempt to reduce the number of asylum seekers trying to enter via Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary. More than 16,000 people have nevertheless applied for asylum in Austria in the first half of 2017, despite most of the borders having been partly closed for six months, reports derstandard.at.

Amidst reports that large numbers of people are trying to cross into Austria from Italy on quiet alpine routes, zeit.de reported that Austria sent four tanks and 750 soldiers to monitor the area in early July.

Norway Progress leader defends minister over 'imam' comment
10 August
[TheLocal.no] Norway’s finance minister and leader of the nationalist Progress Party Siv Jensen has defended immigration minister Sylvi Listhaug over controversial comments criticising the leader of another party. Listhaug accused Christian Democrat Party leader Knut Arild Hareide of pandering to extreme elements of society instead of confronting people with extreme opinions during a debate on the NRK P2 radio station.

The Norwegian expression used by Listhaug, “sleike imamer oppover ryggen”, translates approximately to saying Hareide was ‘sucking up to’ or ‘prostrating himself before’ imams.

The Christian Democrat party gained 5.6 percent of the popular vote in Norway’s last general election in 2013 and is a parliamentary ally to the the Conservative-Progress coalition government. But the socially conservative centrist Christian Democrats are too soft on immigration policy, Listhaug argued.

“The Progress Party is the only party that is taking a clear position against people that approve of stoning as a method. When we let things like this go on we are putting our own values at risk,” Jensen said.

Iran-born AfD politician investigated over Islamophobia accusations
9 August
[TheLocal.de] Prosecutors in the southwest German city of Saarbrücken are investigating an Iran-born AfD politician over accusations that she made Islamophobic statements. A prosecutor’s office spokeswoman said on Wednesday that AfD politician Laleh Hadjimohamadvali - a candidate in the upcoming national elections - is suspected of defamation of religious groups, as well as incitement to hatred. Hadjimohamadvali was born in Iran and has said that she fled to Germany to get away from Islam in the 1980s after the 1979 Iranian Revolution led to the establishment of an Islamic Republic.

According to the Saarbrücker Zeitung, Hadjimohamadvali said during a party gathering on June 24th that Islam was “worse than the plague” because she said Muslims become stronger in Germany every day and are taking over an ever greater portion of the country.

Migrants found hidden in fairground rides in Spain's Ceuta
9 August
[TheLocal.es] Spanish police have found 30 Moroccan and Algerian migrants, 10 of them minors, hidden in fairground vehicles leaving the Spanish territory of Ceuta after an annual festival, they said Tuesday. Agents used heartbeat detectors and dogs to locate the migrants who had hidden anywhere they could find -- including bumper cars and a ghost train - as the vehicles carrying them waited to board ferries bound for mainland Spain, the Guardia Civil police force said.

The funfair involves some 350 vehicles carrying everything from fairground rides to ticket booths, the spokesman said, all of which board ferries to return to mainland Spain once the festival is over. He said the fairground vehicles had started boarding ferries early on Monday morning, and by late Tuesday afternoon, there were still a dozen left to go.

Once on Spanish soil in Ceuta, invading migrants are taken to migrant reception centres where they can apply for asylum. But many are desperate to get to mainland Spain, believing that the process in Ceuta is slow or fearing that they will be returned to neighbouring Morocco, and try to hide in lorries boarding ferries.

1 Killed After Car Plows Into Protesters
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia - A vehicle has struck protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, after police dispersed a gathering of white nationalists on Saturday.

At least one person was killed in the collision, Charlottesville Mayor Mike Singer said on Twitter.

"I am heartbroken that a life has been lost here," Singer wrote. "I urge all people of good will -- go home."

At least a half-dozen others were also wounded, suffering minor to life-threatening injuries, authorities said Saturday.

A dozen medics were seen carting the injured back and forth on stretchers. The victims appear to be counter-protesters but could be residents, CBS News justice reporter Paula Reid reports.

"A car appeared to deliberately mow down pedestrians," eyewitnesses tell Reid.

Video from the scene showed a grey sedan plowing into protesters marching through the downtown shopping district as bystanders screamed for help.

Footage from another angle showed the car speeding in reverse to flee the scene.

White nationalists clashed with counter-protesters hours before the collision in downtown Charlottesville. Alt-right activists and white supremacists planned to protest the city's decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the city's Emancipation Park.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency in the city to aid the state's response to violence in the area.

The City of Charlottesville also declared the assembly unlawful and officers in riot gear began to clear the area shortly after noon.

"It is now clear that public safety cannot be safeguarded without additional powers, and that the mostly out-of-state protesters have come to Virginia to endanger our citizens and property," McAuliffe said in a statement.

"I am disgusted by the hatred, bigotry and violence these protesters have brought to our state over the past 24 hours," McAuliffe said, adding that state troopers and the Virginia National Guard were providing support to local authorities.

#2  city's decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from the city's Emancipation Park.

The fact that slavery was ended because of the was a humongous civil war that killed a 1/4 million people doesn't fit the narrative. Everybody knows that slavery was ended by Dr. Rodney King refusing to ride in the back of the bus!

Chicago Soda Tax A Bigger Hot Mess Than Predicted
Back in December of last year, over vocal protests from residents, Cook County, Illinois (which is primarily composed of Chicago) adopted a policy similar to many other cash strapped, liberal municipalities. They decided to save the people from themselves and simultaneously put a bunch of money in the city’s nearly empty coffers by imposing a sin tax on soda and other “sweetened beverages.” Their argument was that soda is unhealthy so people would drink less of it if it cost more, and if they managed to keep the the bankruptcy lawyers away from the door for a while longer, all the better!

We’ve written about these sin taxes of various sorts at length here and studied how well they’ve worked out for others. (Spoiler alert: they don’t.) What Cook County was attempting looked to be fraught with problems from the get-go and now the drama is playing out in a hot mess beyond even what I’d imagined. So poorly thought out was this plan that the county seems to be breaking the law no matter how they try to implement it. (CBS Local)

The main purpose, of course, is to add a bunch of public employees to the payrolls.

#2  There no end to the creativity and the evil of politicians when devising things to tax. To date, "Global warming/climate change" and "Obamacare" were the ultimate scams. SCOTUS even abetted the O-Care scam.

#3  And then the food stamp program from the Dept of Agriculture tells Chicago that sodas have long been covered by food stamps, and receipients can buy them and your'e not allowed to charge taxes on food stamp purchases.
I'm totally serious here.

#4  When you see shit like this it's well past the time when we send Congresscritters to Washington to do nothing but repeal laws. State sales tax laws tax quite a few things in grocery stores, like (in Mass.) light bulbs, batteries, and many more non-food items. They also have meals taxes that apply to such things like the salads you make at the salad bar (since that's in a ready to eat state). I don't know where the USDA gets off telling states they can't tax simply because the currency used is in a different form, other than the usual officiousness of federal employee jackoffs.

All people are rising up to retaliate against the US: North Korea
[Iran Press TV] Pyongyang has claimed that at least 3.5 million people have joined the North Korean army to defend the country in the case of a war with the US.
That's nothin'. Saddam had eight million, remember?
"All the people are rising up across the country to retaliate against the US thousands of times," said a report published by the North’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper the RT cited on Saturday.

The report states that some 3.5 million people, including retired soldiers and students, have enlisted in the army since tensions began to soar with the US over North Korea’s missile tests.

"In North Hwanghae Province, 89,000 young men pleaded to enlist or reenlist on August 9 alone. In Daedong County of South Pyongan Province, more than 20,000 students, party members and laborers filed enlistment or reenlistment requests," the report notes.

Over the past few days, the US and North Korea have gotten into a fiery
...a single two-syllable word carrying connotations of both incoherence and viciousness. A fiery delivery implies an audience of rubes and yokels, preferably forming up into a mob...
rhetoric, threatening to take military action against one another.
