Missouri Gov. Greitens demands ouster of Sen. Maria Chapelle-Nadal over assassination remark
[ABC] Missouri Governor Eric Greitens on Friday demanded the removal of a state senator who called for President Trump's assassination in a now-deleted Facebook post. Those remarks prompted an investigation by the U.S. Secret Service.

Sen. Maria Chapelle-Nadal, a Democrat, wrote on her personal Facebook page Thursday, "I hope Trump is assassinated!" She later deleted the post.

Chapelle-Nadal has balked at calls for her resignation.

"I am not resigning," she tweeted Thursday. "When POC [people of color] are respected by this WH & they are willing to do real work, I'll sit down with them. People are traumatized!"

Jeh Johnson: Removal of Confederate Statues a Matter of ‘Homeland Security'
[Free Beacon] Former Obama administration official Jeh Johnson said the removal of Confederate statues was a matter of "public safety and homeland security" on Sunday.

In the aftermath of deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va., when a man with white nationalist ties was arrested for ramming his car into a crowd of counter-protesters last week and killing a woman, Confederate monuments across the country have been taken down. The furor in Charlottesville began with a protest by white supremacists against the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee.

Johnson served as Secretary of Homeland Security under Obama, and he said on ABC's "This Week" that the monuments to Confederates were helping to rally white nationalists.

"What alarms so many of us from a security perspective is that so many of the statues, the Confederate monuments, are now, modern-day, becoming symbols and rallying points for white nationalism, for neo-Nazis, for the KKK, and this is most alarming," Johnson said. "We fought a world war against Naziism. The KKK reigned terror on African Americans for generations."

"I salute those in cities and states who are taking down a lot of these monuments for reasons of public safety and security," he added. "And that's not a a matter of political correctness. That's a matter of public safety and homeland security and doing what's right."

Host Martha Raddatz said she felt the Trump administration would call that a "slippery slope," referring to local Washington locations like Washington-Lee High School and Jefferson Davis Highway.

Good question. Some of those statues have been there for over 150 years and never caused any trouble. Now it's suddenly a matter of great urgency that they be removed. Might be they think they can blame the trouble of removing them on Trump.

I don't agree with any of those statements. It's another instance of this guy trying to insert DHS into one more thing. It is another instance of political correctness. It's like when he tried to declare the voting process a part of “critical infrastructure" and taking it over; thus making it easier to rig elections.

Dershowitz: Russia investigation 'endangers democracy'
[The Hill] Attorney Alan Dershowitz says special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia "endangers Democracy."

"The idea of trying to create crimes just because we disagree with [Trump] politically, and target him, really endangers democracy. [It] reminds me of what the head of the KGB said to Stalin: 'Show me the man, and I will find you the crime,'" Dershowitz told John Catsimatidis on New York's AM 970 in an interview that aired on Sunday.

"[This is] where things happen in darkness and secrecy. The American public doesn't learn about it," he said, accusing the investigators of not sharing information with the public. "This exactly the wrong way to approach the problem of Russia’s attempt to influence American election. We do not know what is going on. We get leaks, but the leaks are selective leaks."

The Harvard law scholar, who is an opinion contributor to The Hill, also criticized former FBI Director James Comey, whom he called one of the "worst offenders" of leaks that have encouraged other members of government to leak classified information.

"One of the worst offenders of leaks is the former head of the FBI, Comey," Dershowitz says. "[He] created a very very bad precedent for people in government, making it sound like it is okay to leak material. It is not okay to leak material."

Comey had a friend leak several memos of his conversations with President Trump to the New York Times shortly after he was dismissed from the FBI in May.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
IT staffers may have compromised sensitive data to foreign intelligence
BLUF:
[NY Post] Wasserman Schultz denies the DNC turned down the FBI’s assistance or that her congressional or DNC e-mails were compromised by Awan.
"This whole investigation pivots off Debbie Wasserman Schultz," the official said.
"It’s clear that large bytes of data were moved off the secure network," said another source close to the investigation, adding that Awan and the other four staffers under investigation had "full and complete access" to lawmakers’ e-mails, calendars, schedules, hearing notes, meeting notes and memos and other sensitive information.

Investigators are trying to determine if any classified information was compromised. Although the network that was breached is an unclassified system, it’s possible that members or staff cleared to handle classified information inadvertently sent such information in e-mails after getting classified briefings, sources believe.

"Logic dictates that sensitive data was compromised," the senior official speculated. "An accused criminal with close ties to Pakistan had full and complete control over data that went out over the network."

#1  Any competent counterintelligence (CI) damage assessment would immediately default to a compromise of data and recommend corrective actions. This is not rocket science.

We are now learning that USG data had been taken from the Congressional networks and placed on outside servers. And, since the IT staffers (Imran Awan and family members) also worked for members of the Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committee members, the probe is also looking into the compromise of classified information.

It is also reported the Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL) has hired legal counsel in the matter.

#10  Investigators now suspect that sensitive US government data — possibly including classified information — could have been compromised and may have been sold to hostile foreign governments that could use it to blackmail members of Congress or even put their lives at risk

Not inclined to agree with the 'blackmail' angle. Far easier to use it to determine US plans, policies and ops in various interest points like A-stan, Arabian peninsula, South China Sea, Indian subcontinent, et cetera. Might also be of use to various and sundry lobbyist outfits and interest groups (foreign and domestic) that deal with Congress.

#12  The amounts of money paid to people with no real experience or existing relevant business, even after they were no longer able to perform their job, points to blackmail IMO.

Although with material that predates access to the Congressional systems, which in turn indicates foreign intelligence involvement.

Barcelona attack: Spain terror cell had 120 gas canisters
[BBC] A 12-strong terror cell that carried out two attacks in Spain this week had collected 120 gas canisters and was planning to use them in vehicle attacks, Spanish police say.

Canisters were found at a house said to be used by the cell that blew up in the town of Alcanar on Wednesday night.

Police are still hunting for the driver of the van that hit dozens of people on Barcelona's Las Ramblas, killing 13.

On Sunday, a Mass was held in Barcelona to mourn the victims.

In addition to the 13 killed on Thursday afternoon on Las Ramblas, a woman died in a second vehicle attack early on Friday in the town of Cambrils. Five suspected jihadists were shot dead by police in the second attack.

The Catalan authorities have also confirmed that a British-Australian seven-year-old, Julian Cadman, was among those killed in Barcelona.

He had been missing since becoming separated from his injured mother in the attack and his family had put out appeals for news of his whereabouts.

Dick Gregory pegs out
[SHOWBIZ411] Dick Gregory has died at age 84. Incredibly important and influential as a civil rights activist who was also a humorist and stand up comic and author, Gregory was portrayed just last year off Broadway by Joe Morton in a one man play called “Turn Em Loose.” He came up at the same time as Bill Cosby (whose own role in similar capacities is not invalidated by his legal problems).

Dick Gregory came into my consciousness in 1968 (I was 11) because he made headlines for going on a hunger strike. This was after he was already famous as humorist and comic. This was shocking. He protested the lack of rights for Native Americans in Washington state. It would become the first of many hunger strikes Gregory would use as a method of protest from his early days right up til age 80.

He picketed, was arrested, over and over. He was a committed activist for the right causes, was passionate and persuasive. In light of what’s happened recently in politics, Dick Gregory should only be remembered with the highest regard.

On the other side, not legal, he wrote books, appeared in films, and toured incessantly. Read his bio at Wikipedia. A good movie has to be made about him.

Former health chiefs to POTUS: Avoid new 'Obamacare' crisis, send money and lots of it
[SF Chronical] 'Obamacare' crisis. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington. Don’t make things worse. That’s the advice of former U.S. health secretaries of both parties to President Donald Trump and the GOP-led Congress, now that "Obamacare" seems here for the foreseeable future. The 2018 sign-up season for subsidized private health plans starts Nov. 1, with about 10 million people currently being served through HealthCare.gov and its state counterparts.

That's the advice of former U.S. health secretaries of both parties to President Donald Trump and the GOP-led Congress, now that "Obamacare" seems here for the foreseeable future. The 2018 sign-up season for subsidized private health plans starts Nov. 1, with about 10 million people currently served through HealthCare.gov and its state counterparts.

Stability should be the immediate goal, said former Health and Human Services secretaries Kathleen Sebelius, Mike Leavitt and Tommy Thompson. At minimum: Dispel the political and legal uncertainty -- fueled by presidential tweets -- around billions in subsidies for consumers' insurance copays and deductibles. The three former officials shared their views with The Associated Press.

Beyond the urgent need to calm markets by providing clarity on subsidies, Democrat Sebelius and Republicans Leavitt and Thompson differ on the direction Trump and Congress should take. They agree that Republicans still have an opportunity to put their stamp on the Affordable Care Act, even if the drive to "repeal and replace" former President Barack Obama's legacy program appears to have hit a dead end.

"They can make changes that signal a new ideological direction without generating a logistical and political mess," said Leavitt, who led HHS during former President George W. Bush's second term. "They won the right to make changes. However, they should do it in a skillful way." Leavitt shepherded the Medicare prescription drug benefit through its rocky rollout in 2006.

Wreckage of WWII ship "USS Indianapolis" sunk after 'secret mission' found in Philippine Sea
Moved to Science & Technology, where the previously posted article on the subject is.

-- trailing wife at 11:49 EDT
[10News] Wreckage from a World War II cruiser has been found 72 years after it was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine during the final days of the war.

Research crews discovered remnants of the USS Indianapolis Friday in the Philippine Sea, sitting 5,500 meters below the ocean's surface.

The ship was sunk on July 30, 1945, while returning from a "secret mission" delivering components for the two nuclear bombs to the island Tinian. Those components were, of course, used for the weapons dropped on Japan.

Of the 1,196 service members on board, 317 survived. Twenty-two of those survivors are still alive today.

"To be able to honor the brave men of the USS Indianapolis and their families through the discovery of a ship that played such a significant role during World War II is truly humbling," Paul Allen, owner of the Research Vessel Petrel that found the wreckage, said. "...While our search for the rest of the wreckage will continue, I hope everyone connected to this historic ship will feel some measure of closure at this discovery so long in coming."

The research team searched 600 square miles of ocean in its latest attempt to locate the naval vessel. Previous attempts have been made, though without the technological developments employed today.
Quint: Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte, just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. Thirteen-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, Chief? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know... was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. Heh.
They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups. Y'know, it's... kinda like ol' squares in a battle like, uh, you see in a calendar, like the Battle of Waterloo, and the idea was, shark comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin', and sometimes the shark'd go away... sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. Y'know the thing about a shark, he's got... lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'... until he bites ya. And those black eyes roll over white, and then... oh, then you hear that terrible high-pitch screamin', the ocean turns red, and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces.

Australian PM urges developers to design protection from vehicle attacks
[Jpost] Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called on Sunday for developers to incorporate safety features into their projects to prevent militant attacks with vehicles and other weapons as he announced new plans to protect the public.

Turnbull unveiled Australia's first national strategy to protect crowded places, which he said was initiated after an Islamist militant drove a truck into crowds in the French city of Nice in last year, killing 84 people.

It comes days after a similar attack in the Spanish city of Barcelona killed 13 and injuring more than 100, and follows a string of similar vehicle attacks around the world.

BDS Catalonia made the accusation on Friday, a day after the Islamic State terrorist group said its militants killed in the Spanish region 14 people and wounded another 100 in two incidents in and near its capital, Barcelona.

Following a paragraph that states that BDS Catalonia "wishes to condemn the attacks committed" and to "express solidarity with the victims and their relatives," the statement asserts that "we also condemn the responsibility of European governments in what they are doing with their foreign and domestic policies, and their complicity in human rights violations worldwide."

In the only reference to terrorism in the statement, the authors wrote: "We also do not forgot the victims of military occupations, of wars and terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestina, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Mali, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and many other places where what happened yesterday in Barcelona is a daily occurrence."

Finally, the authors added, "we emphasize our opposition to Islamophobia, Xenophobia and all forms of discrimination." Solidarity, the authors added, "is our most powerful weapon. #Barcelona."

#1  since europe welcomed the migrants without screening in some sense, europe is 'responsible' for the attack

of course, since Islamic terrorism is Islamic, that is more responsible --- most people in Spain know this but are afraid to say it

#2  Given that Spain's courts have repeatedly ruled that local and other governments adopting BDS principles is very illegal hate behaviour, I have to wonder how long it will be before the BDS movement itself is outlawed as a hate group.

Black Americans: The Organized Left's Expendable Shock Troops
[Juliette Ochieng's Baldilocks Blog] Black Americans are, for the most part, a tribe. Some will take offense to that opinion, but if we consider the specifics of our existence as Americans since the practice of enslaving imported Africans became widespread in this hemisphere, we see that there is nothing else that we can be called.

Remember, our ancestors, of various West African tribes, were brought here, sold, and forcibly stripped of their various names, languages, cultures, and religions. That conditioning created a new tribe: The Negro. And even after the abolition of slavery and the extension of legal citizenship to former slaves, Americans of African descent were confined under a societal barrier. A few managed to break through the barrier, but the clear majority remained in the legal, economic, educational social and tribal space into which the US Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson allowed state and local governments to pen them.

But along came the Civil Rights Era, really beginning in the 1940s and reaching its apex in the 1970s. The Civil Rights and the Voting Rights Acts heralded the end of our status as an insulated tribe within a nation and they harkened back to the objective ideals on which this nation was founded.

GOP senator: 'It feels like violence is coming'
[The Hill] A GOP senator on Friday evening warned that "it feels like violence is coming" and the president won't be able to calm the nation in the face of it.

In an extensive Facebook post, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) shared thoughts he said were prompted by the violence last weekend in Charlottesville, Va. that left three dead and multiple injured.

He unloaded on President Trump and his administration over the response to the incident, which Sasse called out as motivated by white supremacists. Sasse charged that some of Trump's closest advisers see racial division as an opportunity.

However, he also blamed misunderstandings - some deliberate - on both sides of the aisle and argued that the current national debate should not be "a fight about historical monuments." Many state and local governments are taking steps to remove Confederate statues in the wake of the Charlottesville violence, which was originally organized to oppose the removal of a Gen. Robert E. Lee statue there.

Trump has criticized the removal of Confederate monuments, citing their historic value.

Sasse also said that he doesn't believe Trump can bring the country together after the violence, both what was caused last weekend and what may come in the future.

Zimbabwe blocks flights amid Grace Mugabe scandal
[Al Jazeera] Zim-bob-we has blocked flights by South Africa's government-owned airline amid tensions over allegations that Zim-bob-we's first lady assaulted a young model in Johannesburg.

A South African Airways flight was not allowed to take off from Zim-bob-we's Harare airport for a trip to Johannesburg on Saturday.

Another flight from Johannesburg to Harare was also cancelled.

Authorities in Zim-bob-we said the planes were blocked for failing to comply with civil aviation rules.

The move follows the grounding of an Air Zim-bob-we flight at Johannesburg's main international airport on Friday.

Both countries said they imposed restrictions because the planes did not have a "foreign operator's permit".

A South African Airways front man said officials had asked to see certain documents that had not been requested in two decades.

Allegations against Grace Mugabe
The tit-for-tat between the two countries comes as Zim-bob-we's first lady, Grace Mugabe, faces allegations of assaulting a young South African female model at a luxury hotel in Johannesburg.

Twenty-year-old Gabriella Engels has accused Grace Mugabe of barging into a hotel room where Engels was waiting to meet one of Mugabe's sons on Sunday and whipping her with an extension cord.

South African police issued a "red alert" on Friday at the country's borders to prevent Mugabe from fleeing undetected.

Her whereabouts were not known on Friday, but South African police minister Fikile Mbalula said she remained in the country.

The 52-year-old, who has not yet been charged, has asked for diplomatic immunity in the case.

Lawyers for Engels have threatened to go to court if immunity is granted.

It is not clear whether Mugabe entered South Africa on a personal or diplomatic passport.

South Africa's government said it had not yet decided whether to grant the request for diplomatic immunity.

South Africa grants Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity

[Guardian] South Africa has granted diplomatic immunity to Zim-bob-we’s first lady, Grace Mugabe, allowing her to avoid prosecution for the alleged assault of a 20-year-old model, a security source has said.

Despite confusion about Mrs Mugabe’s whereabouts, South African police said she was still in the country.

Afghanistan
'Decisions made' on Afghanistan and beyond, says Trump
[DAWN] US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
tweeted early Saturday that "many decisions" had been made in a meeting with his top military advisers, including on the 16-year-old war in Afghanistan.

The Trump administration, wary of international involvements but eager for progress in the grueling Afghan war, has been weighing a range of options. It had originally promised a new plan by mid-July.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted about the meeting a day earlier at the presidential retreat in Maryland, saying: "Important day spent at Camp David with our very talented Generals and military leaders. Many decisions made, including on Afghanistan." It was unclear how far-ranging those decisions might be, or when they would be announced.

But Trump is said to be dissatisfied by initial proposals to add a few thousand more troops in the country, and advisers were studying an expanded strategy for the broader South Asian region, including Pakistain.

There are now about 8,400 US and 5,000 NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
troops supporting Afghanistan's security forces in the fight against Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and other bad boys. But the situation has remained as deadly as ever, with more than 2,500 Afghan police and troops killed from January 1 to May 8.

Thousands march against 'Free Speech' in Boston
[DAWN] Thousands of leftist counter-protesters marched peaceably through downtown Boston, United States on Saturday, chanting anti-Nazi slogans and waving signs condemning white nationalism ahead of a rally being staged by conservative activists a week after a Virginia demonstration turned deadly.

Police Commissioner William Evans said Friday that 500 officers some in uniform, others undercover were deployed to keep the two groups apart.

Boston's Democratic mayor, Marty Walsh, and Massachusetts' Republican governor, Charlie Baker, both warned that holy warrior unrest wouldn't be tolerated in this city famed as the cradle of American liberty.

Organisers of the midday event, billed as a "Free Speech Rally," have publicly distanced themselves from the neo-Nazis, white supremacists and others who fomented violence in Charlottesville on August 12.

A woman was killed at that Unite the Right rally, and scores of others were maimed, when a car plowed into counter-demonstrators.

But opponents feared that white nationalists might show up in Boston anyway, raising the specter of ugly confrontations in the first potentially large and racially charged gathering in a major US city since Charlottesville.

Events are planned around the country, in cities including Atlanta, Dallas and New Orleans.

The pro-government Latakia News Network Facebook page says the boom-mobile exploded at a checkpoint Saturday. The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the attack.

The government has sought to present the country as slowly returning to normality after six years of war. It held a premier trade fair in the capital, Damascus, last week for the first time since 2011.

But fighting is still underway in several parts of the country, and the attack in Latakia, which has been firmly under government control throughout the conflict, highlighted the lingering instability.

Lebanese army, Hezbollah launch separate military assaults against ISIS
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Lebanese army launched an offensive against an ISIS enclave on the northeast border with Syria, a Lebanese security source said on Saturday, as Hezbollah and the Syrian army announced an assault from the Syrian side of the border.

The Lebanese army was targeting ISIS positions near the town of Ras Baalbek with rockets, artillery and helicopters, the source said. The area is the last part of the Lebanese-Syrian frontier under murderous Moslem control. "We started advancing at 5 a.m. (0200 GMT)," the Lebanese source said.

The operation by the Syrian army and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Lebanese group, was targeting ISIS murderous Moslems in the western Qalamoun region of Syria, the Hezbollah-run al-Manar television station reported, an area across the frontier from Ras Baalbek.

Last month, Hezbollah forced Nusra Front murderous Moslems and Syrian rebels to leave nearby border strongholds in a joint operation with the Syrian army.

The Lebanese army, a major recipient of US military aid, did not take part in the July operation, but it has been gearing up to assault the ISIS pocket in the same mountainous region. A military source said around 500 ISIS fighters were holed up in the enclave.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun
...a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
was following the army operation, called "Jroud Dawn". "Jroud" refers to the barren, mountainous border area between Leb and Syria.

Lebanese security sources have previously said the army intends to fight ISIS in Lebanese territory on its own, in response to suggestions Hezbollah or the Syrian army may help it.

Spanish newspaper: Qatar financed extremism in Catalonia
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A Spanish newspaper revealed that Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
financed centers of Islamic worship and mosques in Spain, particularly in the province of Catalonia, where the terrorist attacks happened.

The newspaper said in its report that Doha supports the places of worship there through wealthy businessmen, which lead to the growth of the phenomenon of extremism in Spain.

The Barcelona attack, which was adopted by ISIS organization, recalls to mind earlier discussions related to the funding of mosques frequented by bandidos faceless myrmidons in Europe and its relation to terrorist attacks that claimed innocent lives.

A report published in the Spanish newspaper "La Razón" exposed the funds coming from abroad, especially from Doha to centers of worship in Spain in Catalonia, which became, according to the newspaper, a stronghold of extremism and terrorism.

Islamic centers and mosques have been under Spanish security control for years since it started receiving funding from Qatar through wealthy businessmen, the report said.

The data indicate that seven percent of Moslems in Spain, estimated at two and a half million people are based in Catalonia.

Spain has more than 1,260 Islamic worship centers, of which 256 are in Catalonia alone, where the highest numbers of immigrants colonists live.

TV actress allegedly raped by co-star
[Dhaka Tribune] A television actress and presenter has allegedly been raped by a co-star in Dhaka.

In a case filed with Kadamtali cop shoppe on Wednesday, the victim alleged that she was raped by Shariful, whom she had worked with in several television dramas, at her residence on August 2.

They became intimate during the shooting of a drama in India earlier in July and reached to an understanding there to marry each other very soon, she noted.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
after returning to the country, Shariful suddenly made a visit to the actress’ residence in Dhaka on August 2 and raped her.

The rapist also recorded the incident with a hidden camera and later spread the video among the victim’s relatives and acquaintances through fake Facebook and IMO accounts, according to the case statement.

Kadamtali cop shoppe Officer-in-Charge Kazi Wazed Ali said the victim had been admitted in the One Stop Crisis Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police is carrying out drives in different areas of the capital to arrest the accused rapist.

Tweet from the account of Charlottesville rally organizer insults slain protester Heather Heyer
[LATIMES] A tweet from the account of the far-right activist who organized the Charlottesville, Va., “Unite the Right” rally insulted the protester who was killed at the event, saying late Friday night that her death was “payback time.”

“Heather Heyer was a fat, disgusting Communist,” stated the tweet on an account belonging to Jason Kessler. “Communists have killed 94 million. Looks like it was payback time.”

The tweet linked to a story on neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer that also insulted Heyer in crude terms and appeared to take glee in her death.

Kessler did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Police say Heyer was killed when a rally attendee, James A. Fields, 20, drove his sports car into a crowd of counter-protesters at the event Aug. 12, which drew white nationalists, neo-Nazis and other far-right figures from around the nation.

Fields has been charged with her murder. Kessler had blamed city officials for not providing sufficient security for the rally, which originally was organized to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a Charlottesville park.

Kessler’s tweet sparked denunciations from other far-right rally attendees, who quickly distanced themselves, accelerating a spiral of recriminations that have been brewing among far-right leaders over who was to blame for the chaos behind last weekend’s violent “Unite the Right” rally.

On Saturday morning, the tweet had been deleted from Kessler’s account, which initially claimed he’d been hacked but then backtracked and said he’d been on a mixture of drugs.

“I repudiate the heinous tweet that was sent from my account last night. I’ve been under a crushing amount of stress & death threats,” the tweet stated. “I’m taking ambien, xanax and I had been drinking last night. I sometimes wake up having done strange things I can’t remember.”

Kessler’s tweets then were switched to “private” mode before his account was deleted entirely.

US-South Korean war games will begin on Monday: Pentagon
[Iran Press TV] The Pentagon has announced that US-South Korean war games will begin next week amid rising military tensions between Pyongyang, Seoul and Washington.

The Pentagon said in a blurb that the command post maneuvers known as Ulchi-Freedom Guardian will begin Monday and run through August 31.

The Pentagon said about 17,500 American service members will participate in the drills. Last year, about 25,000 US service members joined the maneuvers.

The announcement came amid concerns that the annual military drills could spark a new crisis with North Korea which has threatened to attack the American Pacific territory of Guam.

Last week, President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
said the US would rain "fire and fury" on North Korea, which some interpreted as threatening the country with a preemptive nuclear attack. A day later, he doubled down on his threat saying a military option against North Korea is "locked and loaded."

In response to Trump’s dire warnings, North Korea said it was "carefully examining" a plan to strike Guam with missiles.

The North Korean military said it could carry out a pre-emptive strike if there were signs of an American provocation.

Afghanistan
Taliban militants kill 5 Afghan police in Helmand overnight raid
[Iran Press TV] At least five Afghan coppers have been killed after the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Lion of Islam group launched an attack against their checkpoint in the southern province of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
, local police say.

General Abdul Ghafar Safi, the provincial police chief, said the incident occurred in Nawa district late on Friday, where fierce festivities between the two sides were still underway early Saturday.

He added that six other coppers sustained injuries in the overnight attack.

In a statement released in the early hours of Saturday, Taliban grabbed credit for the deadly raid.

Back on July 18, the terror group killed five other coppers in the northern province of Baghlan after its heavily-armed hard boyz raided a police checkpoint in Jaded district.

On Friday, Captain Farid, commander of the 3rd Battalion of 3rd Company of 209 Shaheen Military Corps in the northern province of Faryab, announced that at least 80 members of the Afghan National Army had been under siege by Talibs for the previous 20 days.

He also warned that the encircled troops, trapped in Chinaee Camp in Ghormach district, had not received ammunition since the siege began, and if they do not receive any support, they would soon be taken captive by the terror group.

Daesh losses in Mideast increasing UK terror threat: Minister
[Iran Press TV] Britannia’s security minister has warned that terror threat is still on the rise in the United Kingdom despite recent losses of the ISIS Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
group in Iraq and Syria.

Security Minister Ben Wallace said Europe has come under "constant attack" from terror groups, because ISIS is "collapsing in Syria and people are either unable to get out there to fight for ISIS (ISIS) and so they look to do something at home."

"I think those two things mean that the threat is to some extent increasing," he added.

ISIS has already been pushed out the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul

-- its main Iraqi stronghold -- which was liberated on July 10. The group has also lost large swathes of its occupied lands in Syria, and is now subject to intensive counter-terrorism operations in the city of Raqqah, which is yet to be declared free from the bad boy group.

Israeli forces kill Palestinian teenager over alleged stabbing
[Iran Press TV] Israeli forces have shot and fatally maimed a Paleostinian teenager in the northern part of the occupied West Bank over an alleged stabbing attack, police and medics say.

Israeli police alleged in a statement that the 17-year-old, whose identity was not disclosed, approached a group of border guards at Israel's Zaatara military checkpoint, located at Tapuah Junction, south of the city of Nablus, on Saturday and made an "apparent stabbing attempt" against one of the soldiers.

It added that another guard shot up him and critically injured the Paleostinian teen, who succumbed to his wounds shortly afterwards. According to the statement, he was from the West Bank city of Tul Karem.

Israeli medics initially announced that one of the guards also sustained light stabbing injuries but later said it appeared that the 21-year-old trooper had been maimed by shrapnel from the shots fired. Israel's public radio also said the border guard was the victim of "friendly fire."

On July 14, three Paleostinians opened fire on Israeli forces at the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, killing two of them before being rubbed out.

Isis claim responsibility for knife rampage in Surgut
[THESUN.CO.UK] A KNIFEMAN wearing a fake suicide belt has been rubbed out by police after stabbing seven people in Russia ‐ with Isis claiming responsibility for the attack.

The man, named locally as 19-year-old Artur Gadzhiev, was bumped off by cops after going on a horrific stabbing spree in Surgut on Saturday.

Claims have since emerged that the teen's father, Lametulakh, was registered with Russian police as an "extremist" and was a "supporter" of radical Islam.

The suspect had previously been named locally as a 23-year-old, but news outlet media since claimed his real name was Artur, a teen from Dagestan
...a formerly inoffensive Caucasus republic currently bedevilled by low-level Islamic insurgency, occasional outbreaks of separatism, ethnic tensions and terrorism, primarily due to its proximity to Chechnya. While Russers form less than five percent of the population, Russian remains the primary official language and the lingua franca...
, a strongly Moslem region of Russia in the Caucasus.

Footage showing the suspect trying to flee the scene has also been caught on CCTV, with the man appearing to throw something away before being shot.

Russia's Investigations Committee have said they launched a probe into the horror that unfolded about 11.20am local time - with ISIS since having claimed that it was responsible for the attack.

They said: "An unidentified man armed with a knife, moving along the central streets of the city, attacked passers-by, causing 7 citizens to be stabbed, according to clarified data.

"All the victims were hospitalised with wounds of varying severity."

Egyptian authorities foil attempt by 47 people to migrate to Europe
[AlAhram] Egyptian authorities in the Delta governorate of Kafr El-Sheikh foiled on Saturday an attempt by 47 people to illegally migrate to Europe via the Mediterranean, state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
MENA reported.

Police have incarcerated
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
two suspected human traffickers believed to have organised the migration attempt.

The traffickers reportedly collected money from each of the migrants colonists, both foreign and Egyptian, before they were to board a fishing boat for Europe.

The would-be migrants colonists comprised 21 foreigners and 26 Egyptians.

In November, Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi ratified a law aimed at curbing irregular migration and cracking down on human trafficking along the country's northern Mediterranean coast, where thousands of migrants colonists embark on dangerous boat journeys to Europe.

While the legislation does not punish the migrants colonists themselves, it imposes jail terms on those convicted of human trafficking or acting as brokers or controllers.

Don grew up along the northern Great Lakes & was familiar with stories of ships sinking in cold water. He asked the ship's doctor how cold the sea water was & how long a man could live in the water with a life jacket. The answer was, just above freezing, and a man would live 5 minutes or so. Don ignored the night time drills after that & got a great deal more sleep. I was surprised he wasn't disciplined for not showing up.

1 officer killed, 1 in 'grave critical condition' in Kissimmee shooting
[NEWS4JAX] Two Kissimmee police officers were shot Friday night, one of them fatally, while they were responding to a suspicious person call in an area known for drug activity, according to Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell.
I'm sure that if Obama had a son he'd look like the guys who shot them.
Sgt. Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter responded to Palmway and Cypress streets in Kissimmee at 9:27 p.m. and came into contact with four people, police said.

At 9:32 p.m., both men were shot, O'Dell said.

“It looked like they were surprised,” O'Dell said, adding that the officers did not return fire.

One of the officers was shot in the head at close range, a source told News 6. Both men were wearing their Kissimmee Police Department uniforms and body armor.

Suspected Florida Cop Killer Claimed To Be Member Of Black Extremist Group

[Daily Caller] The Florida man who allegedly ambushed and killed two Kissimmee coppers Friday night is a self-professed member of a black murderous Moslem group who appears to have been upset by last week’s events in Charlottesville, Va.

Everett Glenn Miller, 45, was locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
and charged with first degree murder in the killing of Officers Sam Howard and Matthew Baxter.

Miller, who goes by the name Malik Mohammad Ali on Facebook, allegedly ambushed and shot the officers as they were responding to a disturbance call.
Heavy.com adds five fast facts, but these are the key ones:
Mike DeForest, of News 5, reported that Miller was recently committed on a mental health evaluation. “Miller is a Marine veteran who was recently placed under the Baker Act by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office,” reported WFTV. That act allows for involuntary commitments of the mentally ill.

Miller served in the Marines from 1989 to 2010, according to The Orlando Sentinel.

Darren Hightower, a retired Army soldier and former Marine said that Miller served in Afghanistan and worked in military security.

#7  If this is genuine mental illness, I want to know how he got out. Involuntary commitment to this does not compute.

It's not like the old days, Charles, where once one was committed he stayed until he was deemed cured. After the asylums were closed and the laws changed to reflect civil rights concerns during the One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest era, a person can only be involuntarily committed if he is deemed an imminent threat to himself or others, which as a practical matter means he is in the process of attacking someone else or has just attempted suicide, and then only until he is stabilized -- a period generally defined by the states in the U.S. as 72 hours, though it can be as short as 24. In the case of the son of a friend of mine, who had florid paranoid schizophrenia (he thought the archangel Michael was communicating with him through his laptop, that his grandmother was a zombie who was poisoning his mother, and that as he was clearly sane there was no reason to take his meds), they were not able to get him committed for longer than 72 hours until he actually stuck a knife in Grandma's back and killed her. Upon which he was promptly arrested, sat in jail for four years awaiting trial, and finally was sentenced to 10-20 years less time served -- both the pleas "innocent by reason of insanity" and "guilty but insane" leading to the same sentence in the great state of Pennsylvania.

So the retired master sergeant was no doubt given a strong antipsychotic for a few days to treat his paranoia, given a prescription to hand to his local pharmacist and direction to follow up with his therapist, and sent on his way, because that's all the law allows and anyway there are half a dozen others who urgently need each of the thirty beds in the psychiatric ward of the regular hospital.

Al Shabaab Carries Out Second Attack In Kenya Within A Week
[RADIOSHABELLE] Four people were hacked to death and their houses torched in an attack claimed by Shabaab snuffies in Kenya’s coastal Lamu county, police said.

"The attackers dragged people from their houses and killed them. We have launched investigations to establish the motive of the attack," said coastal police chief Larry Kieng.

"The number of people killed are four," he said, adding that three suspects had been taken into custody.

Kieng denied Shabaab was behind the attack Thursday night, saying it was linked to local conflict between herders and farmers.

But another senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity

Somalia’s al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab snuffies later claimed they had killed "five Kenyan Christians" and destroyed a number of homes in Lamu county, according to the SITE intelligence agency.

Turku terror rampage: teen suspect is Moroccan -- just like Barcelona jihadis
[THESUN.CO.UK] A BRIT who rushed to help a women stabbed in a bloody terror attack in Finland has said he is “not a hero” – as police reveal teen suspect is Moroccan.

Two women were stabbed to death in the streets of Turku, with police revealing six others were injured, including several men who came to the aid of the victims, including a woman with a pram.

The British man suffered minor injuries after being caught up in the rampage, with police saying the 18-year-old suspect – from Morocco, like those involved in the Barcelona terror attacks – had appeared to target women.

Both women killed in the attack were Finnish, with others injured including an Italian national and two Swedes.

Superintendent Christa Granroth of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation said: “We think that the attacker especially targeted women, and the men were wounded after coming to the defence of the women.

“One man was injured trying to help a victim and one man tried to stop the attacker.”

Eight people were injured, ranging in age from 15 to 67, with three victims still in intensive care.

Finnish police said in a statement: “The act had been investigated as murder, but during the night we received additional information which indicates that the criminal offences are now terrorist killings.”
Ynet adds:
The police placed in durance vile
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
a number of people during the night as part of their investigation.

Local media said the police raided an apartment in the eastern Turku suburb of Varissuo, which is home to a large immigrant population and located about 7 kilometers from the market square where the attack took place.

The arrested suspect had been in Finland for only a short time before the attack, Helsingin Sanomat newspaper reported. The police will hold a news conference at 1100 GMT.

Four of the maimed were still in hospital, three of them in intensive care, while the other injured persons would be sent home on Saturday, the hospital said.

The SIS has said anti-immigration groups have been on the rise in the country after it received about 32,500 asylum seekers during the migration crisis in 2015.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
'Maarik al-Tawaiha was no murderer' family say
[Al Jazeera] Relatives of a Jordanian soldier convicted of killing three American military trainers last year are vouching for his innocence, demanding that his murder conviction be overturned.

Members of the Huwaitat tribe accuse the Jordanian government of "covering up the truth" and say officials are hiding details that should exonerate Maarik al-Tawaiha.

The 39-year-old was convicted in June of killing of three American Special Forces officers - Matthew C Lewellen, 27, Kevin J McEnroe, 30, and James F Moriarty, 27.

The three were part of a CIA programme training members of Syrian opposition groups in Jordan when they were killed at King Faisal Airbase at al-Jafr, in southern Jordan, on November 4.

Sayel Abu Tayeh, a leader of the Huwaitat tribe and a royal court adviser on tribal affairs, said in a statement early this week that Tawaiha followed the rules of engagement as he believed the base was under attack by unknown assailants.

The CIA used the King Faisal Airbase to train Syrian fighters battling the Syrian government of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Terror of Aleppo ...
The Tawaiha family's version of events that led to the shooting of the Americans is sharply in contrast with the official account of the incident.

Abu Tayeh, a close relative of Tawaiha, accused key figures in the Jordanian government of a "cover-up" and of using his relative as a "scapegoat" in order to deflect American pressure and cover their own security failure.

"What happened on that day was a mix-up that led to the tragic shooting," he said.

"We are saddened that Americans were killed in that incident, but Maarik was no murderer."

Al Jazeera could not confirm many of Abu Tayeh's claims regarding the current or former Jordanian government officials.

But Al Jazeera has obtained several Jordanian court documents, including Tawaiha's own statement and those of witnesses.

Those witnesses said they heard a gun shot being fired, without specifying by who or from where, which triggered the chain of events that later followed.

They also described a shootout between the soldiers defending the base's gate and "unknown assailants" riding in cars approaching the base and shooting at it.

Spanish Police Arrests a Turkish Writer Dealing with Armenia
The link is to a paid pro Putin website, but the article itself is a translation of a Neue Zürcher Zeitung news account
[Fort-Russ.com] The Turkish-born Cologne-based writer Dogan Akhanli has been arrested, following an arrested warrant, issued by the Turkey and a Red Notice from Interpol.

Exact details are not yet know, although it has been announced that consular assistance was sought.

Akhanli has lived in Germany since his departure from Turkey in 1991 and only has a German citizenship.

What is he accused of is not exactly known either. His lawyer Ilias Uyar told the DPA that the arrest warrant had come from Turkey. This was also confirmed by the Spanish police.

Uyar told the Cologne paper Stadt-Anzeiger that the Spanish police arrested Akhanli on the grounds of a Red Notice from Interpol. Akhanli was therefore arrested on Saturday morning while being on holiday in Granada, Spain.

In his works, the 1957-born writer born also deals with the persecution of Armenians in Turkey. According to der Spiegel, Akhanli’s arrest will likely increase tensions between Berlin and Ankara.

Green Party MEP Volker Beck said that the Turkish approach was “clearly wrong.” He called on the German Foreign Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, to take immediate action for Akhanli's release.

Gabriel had traveled to Spain the previous day in the wake of terror attack that devastated Barcelona the day earlier.

“How far do we want to let Erdogan get in Europe?”, asked Katja Kipping, the head of the left-wing party, on Twitter.

The PEN writers association said the trial against Akhanli was clearly politically motivated. Its vice-president Sascha Feuchert urged the Spanish authorities not to extradit Akhanli to Turkey.

Akhanli was initially accused of having been involved in a robbery in Istanbul back in 1989. He has lived in Germany since his escape from Turkey in 1991 and is a German citizen.

In October 2011, however, he was acquitted of charges of robbery and manslaughter, although the acquittal was later lifted.

In 2010, he was arrested at an Istanbul International Airport when he wanted to enter Turkey to visit his terminally ill father. He was arrested and placed in custody, although he was pardoned on the very first day. Few days later he returned to Germany.

According to Akhanli's lawyer, the so-called Red Notice was issued against the author by Interpol.

A Red Notice is a request to locate and provisionally arrest an individual pending extradition. It is issued by the General Secretariat at the request of a member country or an international tribunal based on a valid national arrest warrant. It is, however, not an international arrest warrant.

Six dead as Philippine militants battle pro-IS splinter group
[Dhaka Tribune] The Philippines’ largest Moslem krazed killer group has launched a deadly offensive against a splinter faction that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, police said Saturday.

The fighting between the two groups began about two weeks ago in the marshy farmlands around the southern town of Datu Salibo on Mindanao island, regional police spokeswoman Tara Leah Cuyco said.

Clashes between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and its offshoot, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters
...a MILF splinter group aligned with the Islamic State...
(BIFF), took place on Friday and Saturday, with six fighters from the original group killed.

"The MILF is trying to force the BIFF out of the area. They do not want any trouble," Chief Inspector Cuyco told AFP.

A MILF guerrilla leader told a video journalist working for AFP on Saturday: "We do not want them here. It’s an order from the higher-ups."

The MILF, which has more than 10,000 fighters, has waged a decades-long guerrilla war, first for independence and later autonomy for the large Islamic minority in the south of the largely Catholic Asian nation.

It signed a peace treaty with the Philippine government in 2014 and is observing a ceasefire with the Philippine government while waiting for the passage of a proposed law that would grant self-rule to the Moslem areas of the Mindanao region.

Senior MILF leaders have warned President Rodrigo Duterte to deliver on government commitments under the peace accord, chiefly the autonomy law, or risk frustrating MILF members and causing them to defect to the BIFF and other pro-IS groups.

The BIFF, said by the military to have a few hundred armed fighters, has been among several small gangs in Mindanao that have pledged alliance to the IS.

The fighting comes as the military fought a near three-month battle in Marawi, a Moslem city 100 kilometres (62 miles) to the north.

The fighting in Marawi is being led by two other Moslem rebel factions, the Maute group and the Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
The Marawi battle has left 573 bully boyz and 128 soldiers and police dead, along with at least 45 civilians, according to an official tally.

Among a handful of IS fighters who have surrendered in the Old City, where some 2,500 militants remain, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have found track marks indicating the use of amphetamines.

Leaders of the US-led coalition to defeat IS in Iraq and Syria say the condition of IS fighters shows the increasing desperation of militants to keep themselves awake and in the fight.

“As the central services, as water turns off, it makes it very difficult to sustain oneself,” said Col. Ryan Dillon, spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, in response to a question from Al-Monitor. “This was a relatively new report of some of these fighters using some sort of drugs to keep them alert and keep them going. As far as I know, this is the first time for me seeing and getting reports on the use of track marks or some kind of intravenous way of keeping yourself above order.”

Dillon’s comments come 73 days into the fight in Raqqa, as coalition forces have cleared about 55% of the city. Detainees captured by US-backed forces in Syria are sent to local judiciary councils for trial, but American troops may have a chance to interrogate them before they are sent to confinement if the fighters are found on the front lines.

US officials declined to assess how long IS might be able to hold their increasingly tenuous position in the Old City.

IS fighters have used an extensive network of underground tunnels to stay resupplied, and they have also used improvised explosive devices in the past two days to launch failed counterattacks. As the group is confined to smaller sections of the Old City, the United States is training more local volunteers to hold the city.

On Wednesday, Dillon told reporters at the Pentagon via video link from Baghdad that the Raqqa Internal Security Force, tasked with holding the city once it is liberated, had trained 180 more officers.

Coalition officials say the force will eventually resemble the demographic composition of Raqqa itself, with about 80% Arab fighters and 20% Kurds.

“The SDF continues to pressure the enemy,” Dillon said. “They plan to make those fighting them bleed for every inch.”

Arabia
Saudi-led war on Yemen totally failed to achieve objectives: Ansarullah leader
But Ansarullah has totally failed in their objective of conquering and skimming the relative wealth from a pacified Yemen. All either side has accomplished is to get their people killed and their things broken by the other side.
[Iran Press TV] The leader of Yemen's Ansarullah movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, says the Saudi-led aggressors have failed to achieve any of their political objectives in the war on Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
due to the unity and steadfastness of the nation.

During a live televised speech for a group of Yemeni commanders and tribal leaders in the capital Sana’a on Saturday, Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
underlined Ansarullah’s support for an "honorable peace" in Yemen that would guarantee the illusory sovereignty of the country, stressing that surrendering to the enemy pressures is no option for the nation.

The Ansarullah leader warned that the enemy seeks to change the result of the failed war in its favor through a new plot aimed at sowing discord among the Yemeni political factions.

Houthi said enemies seek to infiltrate the Yemeni government and buy loyalty of some officials.

He rejected speculation about efforts by Ansarullah to take control over government institutions and called on all Yemeni political factions to assume an active role in running the country’s affairs.

The Ansarullah leader underscored the need for fighting corruption and implementing reforms in Yemen’s judiciary system to "hold back traitors."

Antifa Protester Yvette Felarca Says Violence Against The Far-Right Is ‘Not A Crime’
[DAILYCALLER] Yvette Felarca, the Berkeley area school teacher and myrmidon left-wing protester responsible for organizing the riot at the University of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, Berkeley in February 2017, claims that violence against the far-right is "not a crime."

Felarca, who belongs to "By Any Means Necessary," a far-left group, is currently facing assault charges after she was caught on video assaulting a white supremacist during a July 2016 rally in Sacramento, Cali.

The school teacher and her compatriots engaged in violent festivities against members of the far-right Traditional Worker’s Party, which had a permit to march in the city. The violence between the two groups resulted in a number of assaults and multiple stabbings. In July 2017, police charged Felarca with "assault by means of force likely to inflict great bodily injury, participating in a riot, and inciting a riot."

As reported by Huffington Post on Wednesday during her arraignment, Felarca described her actions as a form of self-defense, and therefore "not a crime."

"Standing up against fascism
...a political system developed in Italy symbolized by the Roman fasces -- thin reeds, each flimsy in itself but unbreakable when bound into a bundle. The word is nowadays thrown around by all sorts of people who have no idea what they're talking about...
and the rise of Nazism and fascism in this country is not a crime," she said. "We have the right to defend ourselves."

Ongoing Clash In Balkh Leaves Two Dead
[Tolo News] Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
is ongoing in Chamtal district in Balkh province, officials said, adding that two people have been killed and 12 others maimed in the clash.

Deputy head of Balkh provincial council, Sayed Abdullah Masroor, said that six of his bodyguards were maimed when a rocket shelled by the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
landed near their house in Taraki village in Chamtal district at around 9pm local time on Saturday.

According to Masroor, six public uprising forces were also maimed in the fight between security forces and the Taliban in the district.

Two public uprising forces were killed in the clash, he told TOLOnews.

Balkh hospital officials confirmed that one dead and four maimed have been taken to the facility so far.

Balkh police department front man, Shirjan Durani, said the fight was started on Saturday morning and that Taliban has suffered heavy losses.

Talking to TOLOnews, he said the clash is still ongoing in the area.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the congregants were being herded into the paddy wagon...
the 707 Pamir Police Headquarters said in a statement that four Taliban fighters, including their designated district governor for Shortepa district in Jawzjan province, Abdul Rahim also known as Allah Murad, was killed in a military operation by security forces.

According to the statement, more than 10 Talibs including their designated district governor for Magnjak district of Jawzjan, Mullah Qadir, were maimed in the fighting.

The statement said Taliban has been pushed back from the area after they attacked on a security outpost in Magnjak district in northern Jawzjan province.

Chhatra Dal leader expelled for paying tribute to Bangabandhu on FB
[Dhaka Tribune] The Central Committee of the Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, has expelled its Liberation War and Research Affairs Secretary Sardar Amirul Islam Sagar after he paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a Facebook post.

The status was posted on August 15 remembering the day when Bangabandhu and most of his family members were assassinated in 1975.

"Chhatra Dal President Rajib Ahsan and General Secretary Akramul Hasan took the decision as Sagar breached organization discipline," Abdus Sattar Patwari, office secretary of the BNP front wing, confirmed on Thursday (August 17).

In his Facebook, Sagar wrote: "Humble tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one of the valiant soldiers of Bangladesh’s freedom fight, on his 42nd death anniversary."

The Chhatra Dal leader faced stiff criticism from fellow party leaders and activists, prior to being expelled for the social media post paying respect to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

China-Japan-Koreas
Report Provides Potential Insights on North Korean Online Behavior
Emphasis here on "Potential". It's an online akin to Cold War era Kremlin-watching, or seeing who shows up (or not) on the May Day parade review stand.
[38North] A new report offers fascinating insight into Internet activity from North Korea, suggesting that average North Koreans and the upper echelons of the Workers’ Party and military aren’t nearly as cut off as commonly portrayed. However, no definitive conclusions can be drawn from the report about the source, frequency and range of this access because it doesn’t provide hard numbers for many of its conclusions and the raw data isn’t available. That is unfortunate because the findings are counter-intuitive to what we have assumed about North Korean online behavior. Opening the data to peer review may help us better understand the nature and scale of this activity and, if confirmed, could change the way the world deals with North Korea.

An important caveat to many of the findings in the report is that it’s unclear how many people were covered and who they are. The report refers to those with Internet access as a “limited number,” but it didn’t acknowledge that several hundred foreigners might be present in Pyongyang at any one time, accessing the Internet and connecting to overseas sites. For them, using VPNs, accessing Facebook and Google and checking 163.com email accounts would be expected.

Just like almost everywhere else, Facebook is king for the people inside North Korea that have Internet access, and they also spend a fair amount of time on Google, Baidu and other major sites. If the traffic is really coming from North Koreans rather than resident or visiting foreigners, then they really are very much like us—more than we ever imagined. However, while the report adds insight into the largely opaque area of access to the Internet from inside North Korea, it’s far from clear exactly what was captured and whether all of it was really from North Koreans.

I’ve spoken to several North Korea and Internet experts about the report and they all draw the same conclusion: that something is not quite right with the numbers. Perhaps a lot more of it is from foreigners than estimated or perhaps there’s an unknown Internet connection that wasn’t taken into account.

Or, perhaps we are all wrong and North Koreans really are going online and checking Amazon and Alibaba. Without more information, it’s impossible to know and that’s unfortunate because of the surprising nature of some of the findings.

Rush Limbaugh: ‘We Are on the Cusp of a Second Civil War'
[Breitbart] Friday on his nationally syndicated radio show, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh said given the state of affairs in the country, particularly in the wake of last week’s events in Charlottesville, VA, it could be said the country was on the cusp of a second civil war.

Limbaugh insisted much of the angst was being driven by forces from the outside wanting to see the United States cease being a "super powerful nation."

Partial transcript as follows (courtesy of RushLimbaugh.com):

America is under attack from within. Our culture, our history, our founding are under the most direct assault I have seen in my life. And I’m sure it’s the same with you. We haven’t seen anything like this. You might even get away with saying that we are on the cusp of a second civil war. Some of you might say that we are already into it, that it has already begun. However you characterize it, though, we are under attack from within. And it’s being bought and paid for by people from outside America, in addition to inside.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
1 dead, 5 wounded in shelling in SE Ukraine

One Ukrainian soldier was killed and another five were wounded in Russian backed rebel shelling in Donetsk and Lugansk, according to Russian language news accounts.

According to a news article posted on the website of lb.ua, one Ukrainian soldier died in a rebel mortar attack in the town of Avdievka late Wednesday night. He was identified as Sergei Ruchka, part of the Ukrainian 72 Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade.

The following day, the rebels hit Avdievka and Zaitsevo with artillery in the early evening, but no casualties were reported by the Ukrainians.

Rebel artillery fire was reported in the south near the coast of the Sea of Azov, at Bogdanovka and further north at Marinka.

Thursday evening toward midnight rebel shelling resumed, again hitting Avdievka. Ukrainian artillery units fired counterbattery fire in return, reportedly suppressing rebel artillery.

One Ukrainian soldier was wounded in the fire exchanges.

In Krimskovo, in Lugansk, one Ukrainian soldier was wounded in rebel mortar attacks.

Rebel 82mm mortar and heavy machine gun fire was directed in the south near Mariupol, at Chermalyk, Pavlopol, Lebedinsky and Shirokino.

One Ukrainian soldier was wounded in the attacks.

The Donetsk ministry of defense posted a news release that said overnight artillery attacks Thursday in Zaitsevo hit power lines, casting the village into darkness. One unidentified woman was wounded in the attacks. Rebel media said the Ukrainian artillery attacks lasted for several hours.

One Friday, Ukrainian shelling continued near Gorlovka and near Mariupol.

According to news reports compiled at novorosinform.org, separate unofficial militia reports claimed that the Ukrainians were firing on the Donetsk airport and at nearby Spartak on Friday.

Further south, rebel and Ukrainian mortar crews exchanged fire near Dokuchaevsk. In the south near the Mariupul region, rebel forces at Sakhanka and Kominternovo were were hit with Ukrainian heavy artillery and tank gun fire.

Lugansk
A spokesman for the Lugansk ministry of defense, Colonel Andrei Marochko, reported that on Friday Ukrainian artillery struck rebel positions at Frunze, Kalinovo village and the village of Kalinovo-Borshchevatoy.

According to Colonel Marochko, rebel front line troops in Lugansk have been experiencing additional pressure in the form of patrols from the Ukrainian 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, and the 53rd and 58th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigades.

Some of the patrols were characterized as probes, small tactical attacks used to test an enemy's defenses and reactions to fire.

Civil Rights Icon Andrew Young Argues for Confederate Monuments to Remain in Place
[PJ] The Left has made the removal of monuments to the Confederacy their cause du jour. The alt-right, white-nationalist rally and its ensuing violence in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend stemmed from the planned removal of a statue of General Robert E. Lee, and in the wake of the horrific events in that town, more monuments have come down while others are sure to follow.

Stacey Abrams, a Democratic candidate for Georgia's governor, has called for the removal of the iconic Confederate memorial carving on Stone Mountain, just outside of Atlanta. A little further east, in my hometown of Covington, the county Board of Commissioners heard from a handful of citizens who want the Confederate monument at the center of the town square removed or relocated; for what it's worth, our first African-American county commission chair has said that he doesn't want our town to become another Charlottesville.

One voice from the civil rights movement has chimed in on the new trend of erasing the history of the Confederacy. Former Atlanta mayor and United Nations ambassador Andrew Young told reporters on Tuesday that the fight to remove Confederate monuments is not worth having. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted Young:
"I think it’s too costly to refight the Civil War," Young said Wednesday at a press conference in which he and fellow civil rights icon C.T. Vivian endorsed Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell to succeed Kasim Reed as the city’s next mayor. "We have paid too great a price in trying to bring people together."

Young said that he believes that civil rights movements of the past and present have been mistaken in targeting the symbols of even ugly history and should have concentrated more on fighting for issues like economic progress and education. He also reiterated the tried-and-true adage that nonviolent protests are the way to bring about genuine change.

#1  The Dallas Police had to remove from the cemetery today who were there to desecrate the graves of our ancestors.

I agree with the Reverend Andrew Young, as he speaks in the same manner as the late Reverend Martin Luther King and I will now repost a comment I posted last week:

***

Abraham Lincoln in the Gettysburg address where thousands of fresh graves were being dug for the dead of that battle proclaimed that the United States was "One Nation".

To heal the wounds via honor to one another after the civil war, the monuments were built. Indeed, still One Nation. Only this time all men were free and inclusive. Including the Americans these statues are of who accepted defeat and afterwards lived honorably.

In Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech he dreamed that people of all colors will come together in peace. That would include all Americans past and present.

Tearing down these statues of Americans is the tearing down of the United States of America through the gross divisiveness that rules the hearts of the so called "political class" seen for the first time in the most divisive history of this nation.

You know nothing about healing and being one, you only know violence, all you know to do is to tear people down.

***

An added point. Because of the honor, respect and dignity our fore fathers of the South were shown, their sons and daughters fought along side all Americans in all the wars since and knew how to honor the defeated.

General McAuthor left the defeated Hirohito in power because he knew that respect of the leaders of the defeated as only Americans of that time uniquely knew how to do, they would helped him heal the nation and Hirohito's son Akihito succeeded him and continued to build Japan into a great, free nation again.

The true understanding of "Love your enemies" has been erased from this nation. Perhaps it is because we truly are no longer an exceptional Christian nation but have become just another nation of hate.

This Week in Books - 8/20/17
The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise
Dario Fernandez-Morera
ISI Books, Intercollegiate Studies Institute, 2016

Within the official introduction:
Page 11, Introduction

This book gives special attention to primary sources (medieval Christian, Muslim, and Jewish chronicles; literary works; religious and legal texts; and biographies), and usually quotes them verbatim so that nonscholars can read these materials (which in modern publications on Islamic Spain frequently are not part of the narrative and often not even part of the notes) and decide for themselves whether the widespread hagiographic interpretations of Islamic Spain are warranted or not. Unless otherwise indicated, assertions in this book are abundantly supported by these medieval Christian, Muslim, and Jewish primary sources, which are either quoted in the text or cited in the notes.

There is extensive notation, and every premise is backed up. So when a subject is approached, the reader can find the source of information.
Page 60

Despite the bubonic plague, locusts, drought, and the civil wars that ravaged Spain in the years before the Muslim conquest, the Catholic kingdom of the Visigoths still presented itself as a wonderland to the uncultured eighth-century Berber invaders. Medieval Muslim chronicles tell of the astonishment the Islamic warriors experienced at the splendor of Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Merida, and other Visigoth cities. They also tell us that the Muslim armies' sacking of Spain was stupendous. Christian chronicles corroborate these accounts, as does the archaeological evidence of the treasures Christians buried before fleeing the invaders.

Other indicators are noted, including the shadow of the coin showing the value of slaves.
Pages 154-155

Elsewhere Avila observes, "In spite of the existence of sporadic instances of women whose activities seem to indicate a certain independence and freedom - the most famous example being that of the well-born poetess Wallada - all indications are that freedom of activity for Andalusi (free) women was limited to the domestic sphere." Wallanda was the daughter of a sexual slave of foreign origin, from whom she may have inherited her mores, and she was never married, so she never became a muhsan.

At the very least, this book is a fine counterweight to the perceived multi-culturism of Andalusia, the book quotes very precise slave prices and the Muslim view of the black African. To continue:
Page 237

As Robert M. Haddan, Aptin Khanbaghi, Louis Milliot, and other scholars have noticed, the Christian dhimmis served as an intermediary between the more primitive society of the Islamic invaders and the superior civilizations of the Christian Greek Roman Empire and the Zoroastrian Persian Empire. The Persian Muslim chronicler Ibn al-Nadim testified that "in tenth-century Iran, the majority of philosophers were still Christian."

In all, the book is a damning counterpoint to the Muslim occupation of Spain. The author does a fantastic job of remaining relatively neutral while laying out the evidence. Of course a decent understanding of history and dates will help the reader, but the text can stand on its own.

This Week in Emergency Preparedness

Ah, the boogie bag. Nothing around our campfire can start a conversation or confrontation quite like this topic. So no shit, there I was About six months ago I looked west and saw a wall of fire moving towards us at 50+mph. It was the very explanation of why to have a boogie bag - the decision to move or shelter had to happen quickly, and there was no telling for how long.

As the emergency preparedness planner for the family, and as a volunteer firefighter, I had identified an out of control prairie fire as threat number one, so I had a boogie bag tailored for such a threat.

I give myself a C, perhaps a C- on packing.

The easy part: what I got right. Food, though not tasty. Water, though not enough. A Mick Dundee for when the creepy truck driver was walking about the family car at the refugee post. Basic medicines and first aid. That I had one. That last point was probably the best part (puts on Jack Burton voice) because when the ash flakes of hell are falling and the air is crackling one thing for sure is Dad had thought of this, and you hit the road and find safety.

Huge morale boost. Nobody was blindsided or froze. Life is not fun when you can't see one block and the temperature goes up 15 degrees in fifteen minutes.

What I got wrong. To start with, all my vehicles had less than half a tank of gas, one less than a quarter tank. Not enough food and water for three, for three days. What I had was not fun to eat - more on that later. No spare clothing which cost about fifteen minutes. In my defense on that one, the season was winter to spring transition and my children had outgrown their previous spring clothing; the difference between the C and C- viewer's discretion.

Clothing, what a hassle. You desert people can relate; 90 in the day, 20 at night. Fortunately we had a second pack handy and were able to pack current clothing for the affair. Not enough for three days, but extra undies and socks are nice to have, if not necessary. My first chance off the line I changed socks and it was like peeling duct tape off of wall paper, an actual health and safety issue. I have two packs now, tools and textiles. Textiles has socks and undies pre-packed.

What else I missed? Charging cords, or rather, had old ones which didn't fit new things. Some of those port-a-battery-chargers would have been nice. Also missing was the DC/AC power inverter, probably located next to my three missing tape measurers.

Point of order - cell phone reliability was totally squashed. I have good walkie-talkies which are no good if left on the charger. A pre-flight checklist would be good to have; I would have had the walkies, among other things, which would have pushed me into B or even B+ range.

What else would have been nice? Pack of playing cards. Coloring books and crayons. Actual physical stuff to keep minds occupied during lulls, and lulls in this circumstance were long and often. Comfort food would have been nice. Marine emergency rations will get a person by, but some cherry or sour apple hard candies would have been fun. I had nicotine gum, but not nearly enough for a three day odyssey. Whatever habits a person has, smoking, drinking, chewing pencils, is going to explode in a high stress situation. Take that into account.

And my wife, whoa was she hard on herself. She had a total firearm failure when creepy trucker dude started creeping. In short, she grabbed what was convenient instead of what was hers. She must have done that while I was getting gasoline.

Ah, gasoline. The time I saved with having a boogie bag allowed me to beat the crowd to the pumps. Internet was sporadic; took me about eight attempts for the transaction to occur. Lucky there was still power. I do have a mechanical pump in inventory, but it would have done me no good in this instance. It was not yet spring, so I had not filled my lawn mower gas cans yet. Almost a very costly mistake - family could have made it out of the way, but not to the planned destination and would have had to fill up. Because scared people suck and attract predators, it is in my playbook to avoid filling stations especially.

All in all, having a boogie bag and route of escape (go to x's house via a-town and b-town) proved to be very handy, if anything it is having a starting point during an emergency. I was assisting the town's evac and it was apparent who had and had not pre-planned an emergency. It could have cost lives.

I am sure I will think of other things, and questions/comments are certainly encouraged, especially as you all in cities get ready to consider widespread civil disobediences. If I lived back where I have, in a city, I would plan to be stuck in my neighborhood or even residence for up to five days without power or even water. Just me. I lived next to a major interstate intersection; evacuation would have been near impossible. Shoot, it was tough getting anywhere on regular traffic days, and was too close to the intersection to take back roads, they would cram up way too quickly. I'll leave it at that. Urban shelter in place is about exact opposite of my considerations.

Again, I am just sharing a story, not an instruction manual. If anything, I hope I am showing there is no right way to pack, only good and better. Keep up to date as well - bandage technology has progressed bounds since I put together my basic first aid kit some ten years ago. Tourniquets were not even a consideration then, now they are being built into clothing expressly designed to be applied by the patient operating solo. There is some very neat stuff out there if it has been a while since packing your boogie bag. I mean flashlights, are you kidding me? Remember when a mag-lite was holy crap bright? I have a dang nick-nack key deal with a light brighter than they were and for $5. Multi-tools, there are some very cute ones out there, probably some which look rustic and have beard trimmers. Basically, if it can't disconnect/reconnect a car battery it is worthless.

#1  It's time for me to review our situation. What we have is what I assembled when the trailing daughters were young, and I organized it for sheltering in place for a few days after a tornado. For clothing I used two of each of the girls' previous seasons soccer uniforms -- they have names across the back, so useful for identification if separated -- a hoodie and sweatpants for warmth, and lots of crayons, coloured pencils, and paper for writing and drawing.

#2  Everyone with a car should already have their DC/AC voltage inverters installed and ready to use at a moment's notice. I'm a ham operator & once took a poll at a club meeting, only about 10% of those present had their inverters installed & ready. Of all people, they should have known better.
I have a small power strip in the car, which allows me to charge 4 or 5 AC devices simultaneously. I have also pre-wired a 12VDC power strip with 4 sockets, keep that tucked under the front seat.
If you get walkie-talkies, some will operate while being charged, and some will not. Buy what works for you.
Besides a multi-tool, have multiple tools stashed all over the car. No reason why you can't conceal tools allowing you to remove your car's battery - right next to the battery.
? spray strong enough to repel a grizzly bear, along with a Mick Dundee ?
A checklist is essential, not just good to have.

#3  Tornadoes. Very dangerous, quickly occurring, yet very localized event. Wind is your enemy here: blocked roads, slow emergency response, no power or phone. What I like about the soccer uniforms is that they are usually brightly colored, and with the names on them, quickly identifiable. Laceration then trauma from flying debris, so maybe bonus points if a cache of clothes has blood type/important information permanently on the clothing?

Our cache has work gloves, old shoes, in case of getting caught off-guard and have to self extricate. Bandages, flashlight, all that is good, probably my most important piece of equipment is a simple whistle. I consider if we are trapped, the whistle can identify our location. Practicing a cadence can locate a rally point for those who know the tune.

Again, just plan on roads and cell phones being out for at least 48 hours. Local effective responders may have to come from 15-30 miles out, and if each road has a block of trees and/or power lines, there will be some lag, especially as priorities and the too distressed are addressed.

If you have walkie-talkies, remember your radio etiquette. At the least.
-Who you are, who are you asking for-. Over.
(wait for response)
-Give communication-. Over.
(wait for confirmation, preferably with 24 hour local time)

Stay calm; enough going on without panic blurts. Be right with your maker, the morning calm may get grabbed by the Jolly Green Giant and shook like a snow globe before the evening sets.

*Just talked with my wife; she said she also grabbed photo albums, our emergency currency, and what extra essentials we had. Filling up with gas longer than I thought, and she is that good.

#5  Totally agree AH9418.
We (fire department) have inverters and cigarette to USB Charger units in all our vehicles. Cell communication was sketchy but very effective. Stories of people using their cell phone travel locator to show when a turn is coming while visibility was next to nothing.

If my math is right, I can run my inverter to a extension cord to my refrigerator. Not certain I can run the freezer at the same time, so random bags of ice are in there already. In a pinch, bowls of ice in the fridge. S'Why I was so mad at myself for the gasoline levels being so low.

#6  A Technician license for operating amateur radios has a test fee of about $15. I mastered the questions using online teaching aids in a couple of afternoons. It's not rocket surgery. I can routinely reach out & hit a repeater 50 miles away using a homemade 5/8 wave magnetic mount car antenna, cost about $5, and a 50 watt 2M amateur transceiver costing about $125, which runs off a car battery. 2M walkie-talkies can be had for $25-35 new.

#7  Stories of people using their cell phone travel locator to show when a turn is coming while visibility was next to nothing. GPS route finding on cell phones usually requires an internet cell connection. An almost unknown feature of Google Maps is that one can download - ahead of time - local maps anywhere & save them on your smartphone. Then, even if there is no cell data connection, you can still use your phone's GPS & downloaded maps to find your way.

#8  I can run my inverter to a extension cord to my refrigerator. Your inverter better be a honking huge one &/or your fridge extremely low powered. I once bought a 2000W inverter to conceivably run a refrigerator off a car battery, then learned that properly sized cables from the battery to the inverter had to handle 200A or so of 12VDC to supply 15 A 120VAC to the fridge when it powers up. I would also need to buy several extra deep discharge batteries for my car to deliver all this power. It was far cheaper to buy a small generator. It just might be possible to power one of those very small ice making machines off a much smaller inverter. I still have that humungous 2000W inverter on the shelf.

#9  Great idea, especially for identification/medical reasons. I would think saving it in a format easily accessible.

Actually looked into a document scanner recently, about $60. Claimed searchable, usable formats.

A lot of what my wife grabbed is not scannable, and dated about that time.

#10  While I'm thinking of it, a Prius or similar hybrid vehicle has the capability to supply a lot of power to an voltage inverter. It will automatically start its engine to keep its main battery charged, and also has a 12VDC system. People in hurricane affected areas have reported running their entire house off of their Prius type vehicles parked outside, for days at a time. This also requires advance planning.

#13  I've been scanning photos for years & already have most of my old family stuff on chips & hard drives. A digital camera skillfully used can make very good copies of old photos as long as they are visible. Drawback of using a camera is the resulting image tends to be skewed. Then the digital result can be edited to improve on the original, & occasionally to reduce the skew. I once located a family photo of mother & child taken in 1909 - not known to exist before 2006 & absolutely precious to their descendants. It was a hand colored large format photo, way too big for a scanner. I took it out of the frame, took it to someplace like Kinko's where they have giant color scanners, and made full size color copies of the original. Rolled up the copies & mailed them in tubes to the descendants to frame. Put the photo back into the frame. All this cost very little.
In 2006 I examined an old trunk passed down in the family since the Civil War. Found a folded, blackened document on heavy grade paper which appeared to have printing on it - illegible due to the darkening caused by moisture & age. I scanned this with a regular photo scanner, 24 bits of color & 1200 or 2400 dots per inch. Result was a very dark color image. Then I fiddled with it, every setting on the photo editing software, gamma, contrast, brightness, remove red, remove blue, etc. I didn't keep notes, but suddenly a very clear image popped out of the darkness - an original honorable discharge from the US Army dated July 1865. Had I not attempted this, the existence of this document would still be unknown.

#14  I have gotten fairly good results with my smart phone, just copying family photos under glass & inside frames, hanging on living room walls. A regular digital camera with a polarizing lens would work much better for this. You need to know about lighting, reflections and contrast to do this properly, practice will teach you. On summer afternoons I have taken framed photos outdoors, propped them up on a kitchen chair under open shade, copied them with a digital camera on a tripod with very good results. I visit relatives all over the country & have a large selection of photos I got this way.

#15  Dog tags for everyone. McMaster-Carr sells bulk quantities of s.s. ball chain & fasteners, enough to make dozens of necklaces & lanyards for whatever, far cheaper than regular retail outlets. I've gone through more than a 100 feet of ball chain over the years. My small LED flashlights all have s.s. ball chain lanyards, very easy to keep track of this way.
Many companies sell s.s. tags with whatever you want engraved on them.
There might be flash drives that can be worn indefinitely on these chains, containing one's medical history, maps, photos, whatever. I have tried a couple which stopped working correctly after being worn & showered for a year or so.

#17  Got to keep plenty of non perishable food and water available. Have enough buckets on hand to grab and go toot sweet. Bug out bags to keep you surviving in your car. I keep one in my truck for me. If I get stuck at work, like an earthquake happened, I will walk home. Be prepared to batch it outside for a while. Have paper maps of the area, esp topo. Water resistant if possible or at least in zip lock bags. First aid, etc.

You have to think through the scenarios to kit up appropriately. GPS may work, but cellular may be worthless. Know the basics: survival, navigation, appropriate self defense in your situation, morale stuff. Work through it with your family. Situational and self awareness. Get cracking. Tempus Fugit.

Buhari returns after lengthy UK medical treatment
[Al Jazeera] Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has returned to the country on Saturday after more than three months in the United Kingdom for medical treatment for an undisclosed "health challenge".

The 74-year-old left for London on May 7.

His prolonged absence caused tensions back home where calls have grown for him to either return or resign.

"President Buhari is expected to speak to Nigerians in a broadcast by 7am on Monday," his office said.

In recent weeks, the office has been releasing photos of officials meeting with the rail-thin but smiling president in the hope of reassuring people back home.

This was Buhari's second break for medical leave in London this year after a first that began in January and lasted nearly two months.

He reduced his working day to a few hours after returning to Nigeria from his first stint of medical leave on March 10, diplomats and government sources said.

His main opponents in the 2015 election that brought him to power claimed he had prostate cancer. He has denied that claim.

Buhari's four-year term ends in 2019.

Possible Bomb Found During St. Paul Traffic Stop, 2 in Custody
[KSTP] Police and bomb squads are investigating a possible explosive that was discovered in a vehicle in St. Paul Saturday morning, according to police spokesman Steve Linders.

According to the department, the device was found during a traffic stop at Maryland Avenue East and Lane Place at about 5 a.m. Linders said the device appears to be a type of pipe bomb, but authorities are still working to determine exactly what it is.

Linders said the incident began with an argument between a man and a woman in the area, and the woman gave a description of a suspect's car.

When police located the car, they found two men inside, along with two handguns and the device.

Florida man kicked out of school for saluting Lee statue
[PNJ] A Pensacola student who sparked controversy Tuesday by wearing a Confederate uniform to the site of a violent clash between white nationalists and counterprotesters has been kicked out of Pensacola Christian College, according to a North Carolina media outlet.
Sounds like what we used to call a "dipshit." There's a difference between a dipshit and a knucklehead. I don't know what it is.
WXII News 12 reported that Allen Armentrout, who reportedly splits time living in Pensacola and North Carolina, learned Thursday that PCC staff had decided to terminate his enrollment.

"I have been released from my school and will be unable to return to college to finish my senior year," Armentrout told the TV station. "I'm processing this and making adjustments to my life to compensate for this scrutiny."

Armentrout could not be reached for comment Friday.

In a statement to the News Journal on Friday, Pensacola Christian College wrote that to protect student privacy, the institution would not provide any specific information related to any student's enrollment or history at the college.

The statement continued, "Pensacola Christian College recognizes the dignity and value of all people, and we respect the history of America. We encourage individuals to exercise discernment and seek to build reconciliation, especially during a time of mourning like Charlottesville is experiencing."

Video from Tuesday showed Armentrout — wearing a Confederate uniform and carrying a Confederate flag — standing and saluting a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee at Charlottesville's Emancipation Park. He was surrounded by a crowd that chanted "terrorist go home." Armentrout stood in a motionless salute until he was peaceably escorted away from the scene by police.

Armentrout later told the News Journal he made the trip to Virginia because the KKK, Neo-Nazis and other groups are destroying the history of his ancestors and he wants to share "the true history" of the American South. He said Neo-Nazis have wrongly "latched on" to Confederate history.

"I went up there to represent what I believe is right," he said.

Hundreds of white nationalists gathered in Charlottesville over the weekend to protest the removal of Lee's statue and were met by counterprotesters who condemned their cause. Heather Heyer, a Charlottesville paralegal, was killed when James Alex Fields Jr. allegedly drove a car into a crowd of counter protesters.

#2  A lot of people through out the South wear the Confederate Uniform at certain events. The Confederate flag is displayed over the bars along the Ouichita River, while young black men on the other side of the river sling crack in the housing projects. Lake City Florida, near Pensacola has decedents of the confederates host the annual festival of the battle of Olustee.

I have seen them in central Texas.

And one thing I know of these people, if you cross them, you have created for yourself a no-go zone. A white college kid was assaulted by a group of African American students. A few weekends later a black rodeo clown did a great act duaring an intermission and when it was over, instead of the expected applause, there was defining silence from the thousands of the all white crowd in the arena stands. He went out the back of the arena and never came back. This is not going to end well for this nation.

#5  ...When I attended the funeral services for the crew of the H.L. Hunley in Charleston in 2004, there were several hundred reenactors there, and as they left, most left marching in formation - and a lot of people were saluting the Confederate flag as it went by. I couldn't; it simply wasn't right. I had no problem standing respectfully for these men - they were behaving honorably and in a military fashion. But rendering honors? No.

Sounds like what we used to call a "dipshit." There's a difference between a dipshit and a knucklehead. I don't know what it is.

And clearly neither does this guy.

Mike

PS - FWIW, I've known a bunch of people who have attended PCC, and I am not surprised by the school's reaction. They demand good behavior, and honor to one's country. This clown spit in their face and apparently expected no ill effects.

He could have disbursed his army telling them to continue the fight by other means. By other means, one only has to look at the West and Bleeding Kansas and the Lawrence massacre. It would be Iraq, but over a hundred years earlier, raids and retribution. Quantrill's company included the James brothers, who'd use the lingering animosity of the locals to hide among in the post-Civil War endeavors. We avoided a really nasty large scale guerrilla war by his actions.

Italy expels 2 Moroccans, Syrian as terror fears mount; Greece arrests jihadi-linked Belgian-Moroccan woman
[IsraelTimes] Italia said Saturday it had deported two Moroccans and a Syrian on security grounds, lifting to 202 the number of potentially dangerous Islamists expelled since January 2015.

The announcement came as security was raised after vehicle attacks in Barcelona and elsewhere, and a widely-reported warning from the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group that Italia is next on its hit list.

Administrative expulsions, which are not subject to any appeal, are one of the main planks of Italia’s strategy for preventing the kind of jihadist attacks suffered by other European countries.

Sicily decided Saturday to introduce barriers preventing vehicular access to six pedestrianized areas of the island’s capital Palermo, reflecting fears of truck attacks.

Additional barriers are to be placed on potentially vulnerable locations in Milan, a meeting of regional security officials decided.

The prefecture for the Rome region approved an increase in the number of guards for its major tourist sports and said it would step up monitoring of trucks moving around the capital.

The latest individuals deported included a 38-year-old Moroccan said to have been radicalized while in prison for minor crimes. His status was bumped from medium to high risk after he and other prisoners were seen enthusiastically celebrating the Stockholm truck attack in April which killed five people.

The Syrian, who also operated under a false Tunisian identity, was tossed in the calaboose
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in 2015 for involvement in illegal immigration and sent to his room at a center for asylum seekers in southern Italia. There, he was caught celebrating the attack in May that killed 22 people, many of them children, at a concert in the British city of Manchester. The suspect, whose age was not released, had managed to avoid the fate of two previous expulsion orders issued in 2011.

The third man expelled was a 31-year-old Moroccan whose expressions of support for IS were thought to be linked to a psychiatric disorder for which he received compulsory treatment after being arrested for theft.

The interior ministry said all three had been flown back to their respective countries of origin.

Security scare in southern French town after Barcelona attack

[IsraelTimes] Police in the southern French city of Nimes on Saturday briefly closed the local railway station and arrested a man with a fake gun, amid heightened security following a twin terror attack in Spain. The station was sealed off while police detained a man with a replica gun which fires blanks, the local prefecture told AFP.

Spanish media reported earlier that shots had been fired and social media users bombarded Twitter with worried messages, but the prefecture denied there had been any violence.

Greece Arrests Belgian Woman Wanted for Terror Ties

[AnNahar] A 22-year-old Belgian woman has been incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Greece on charges of extremism under a Europol arrest warrant, the coastguard and reports said Saturday. Authorities declined to identify the suspect's nationality but state agency ANA said she was a Belgian apparently of Moroccan origin. The woman had travelled by ferry from Italia to the Greek port of Igoumenitsa, ANA said. She was arrested late Friday on Corfu after Italian authorities alerted their Greek counterparts, the agency said.

"A 22-year-old foreign national has been arrested over suspected links to terrorist activity," a coastguard spokeswoman told AFP. "She is being held on the island of Corfu."

It was not immediately clear when the warrant was issued or whether it was linked to any particular incident.

Spain, France press manhunt for ringleader in dual Barcelona attacks
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Authorities in Spain and La Belle France pressed the search Saturday for the supposed ringleader of an Islamic bully boy cell that carried out vehicle attacks in Barcelona and a seaside resort, as the investigation focused on links among the Moroccan members and the house where they plotted the carnage.

Early Saturday, police searched two buses in northwest Catalonia in the hunt for any remaining members of the cell. Nothing was found in the searches in Girona and Garrigas, police tweeted.

Across the Pyrenees, French police carried out extra border checks on people coming from Spain - a routine beefing-up of patrols anytime a neighboring country flags a potential risk, a French security official said, speaking on condition of anonymity

. No arrests were made.

Police also announced a series of controlled kabooms Saturday in the town of Alcanar, south of Barcelona, where the attacks were planned in a rental house destroyed Wednesday by an apparently accidental blast. Authorities had initially written off the incident as a household gas accident, but took another look on Friday and returned on Saturday.

Police believe the Wednesday night blast, which killed at least one person and injured one of the people currently in jug, actually prevented a far deadlier attack using explosives, forcing the turbans to use more "rudimentary" vehicles instead.

In a tweet Saturday, Catalan police urged Alcanar residents not to be alarmed by the controlled kabooms.

Police also said tests were underway to determine if human remains found at the house on Friday were from a second victim.

In the carnage claimed by the ISIS group, a white van swerved onto Barcelona’s historic Las Ramblas pedestrian promenade Thursday afternoon, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100 as it plowed down unsuspecting tourists and locals. A few hours later, five turbans began mowing down people along the boardwalk in the seaside resort of Cambrils.

One woman died and five others were maimed before police shot and killed all five attackers. They were armed with an axe, knives and fake boom belts.

Authorities said the two attacks were related and the work of a large terrorist cell that had been plotting for a long time from the house in Alcanar, 200 kilometers (125 miles) down the coast from Barcelona.

One of the main suspects in the attacks, Younes Abouyaaquoub, a 22-year-old Moroccan, was believed to be on the lam. His name figures on a police list of four main suspects sought in the attacks. All the suspects on the list hail from Ripoll, a quiet, upscale town of 10,000 about 100 kilometers north of Barcelona.

On Friday, police searched the apartment of Ripoll’s imam, neighbors said. An apparent search warrant seen by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named authorized police to extract any terrorism-related "weapons, ammunition, explosives, instruments, documents or papers" found in the apartment.

The suspect list was issued throughout Spain and into La Belle France, according to a Spanish official and a French police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the document.

The French official said Spain had flagged a rented Kangoo utility vehicle that was believed to have been rented in Spain by a suspect in Thursday’s attacks that might have crossed the border.

Also named on the list is 17-year-old Moussa Oukabir, whose brother Driss reported his documents stolen to police in Ripoll. Ripoll’s mayor confirmed the documents were found in one of the vehicles used in the attacks.

The brothers were born and raised in Ripoll, where the family’s first-floor apartment was searched Friday. No one was home.

Neighbors said they were shocked by the news of Moussa Oukabir’s alleged involvement. One teenager, who identified himself only by his first name, Pau, said they played together when they were younger and he was "a good boy."

In addition to the five people killed in Cambrils, police said they placed in durance vile
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
two people Friday, after the two arrests a day earlier. In custody are three Moroccans and one Spaniard, none with terrorism-related records.

"We are not talking about a group of one or two people, but rather a numerous group," regional Interior Ministry chief Joaquim Forn told Onda Cero radio.

The sheer size of the cell recalled the November 2015 attacks in Gay Paree, in which trained ISIS attackers struck the national stadium, a concert hall and bars and restaurants nearly simultaneously. Since then, the bully boy group has steadily lost ground in its self-declared caliphate in Iraq and Syria, most recently with its defeat in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
"This shows there is no correlation between what is happening over there with ISIS and the operational capacity of the group," said Jean-Charles Brisard, a French security analyst, using another name for the group.

Spanish authorities had not yet drawn any direct links between ISIS turbans and the suspects in the Spanish attacks, but the possibility that members of the Spanish group could still be on the lam was chilling. Those who have survived prior attacks nearly always ended their lives with new bloodshed and a hail of police bullets.

"There is the danger they will not let themselves get caught and will do something dramatic," said Alain Chouet, a former French intelligence official.
Ynet adds:
The faceless myrmidons who carried out the dual vehicular attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils on Friday were apparently out to cause an even greater attack, which was seemingly scrapped due to an explosives malfunction at their lair in the town of Alcanar on Wednesday night: according to Spanish news sites, the faceless myrmidons planned on taking three trucks loaded with explosives and combustible gas and use it to destroy one of Barcelona's most recognizable symbols--the Sagrada Família church, designed by Antoni Gaudi.

Members of the terror cell planned on detonating one truck in La Rambla Boulevard, a second at Gaudi's church and a third at the city's port. To set off the trucks, they planned on using acetone peroxide--a highly-combustible kaboom also known as "the Mother of Satan." The same substance was used during the multi-site terror attack that hit London in July, 2005.

The gas kaboom in Alcanar was initially misconstrued as a domestic accident. Only later did authorities realize that the building was packed with butane canisters and including over 20 drums of gas and TATP explosives.

Initially, only one person was believed to have been killed in Wednesday's blast. But officials said DNA tests were underway to determine if human remains found there Friday were from a second victim. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said Sherlocks believed a Morocca holy man, Abdelbaki Es Satty, might have been the second victim of the house kaboom.

Police are now focusing on links with his Moroccan collaborators and the missing imam believed to have radicalized them. Es Satty has yet to be found, and the president of the mosque where he preached said he had not seen him since June, when he announced he was returning to Morocco for three months.

Pregnant Senegalese women allegedly beaten by two men on Italian bus
18 August
[TheLocal.it] A woman in her sixth month of pregnancy was attacked and repeatedly abused on a bus in Rimini, according to reports in Italy's largest dailies on Friday. The woman, who was of West African origin, said she was attacked and racially insulted on a bus in Rimini by two young Italian men. Several witnesses saw two suspects, one 19-year-old and one 22-year-old, both Italian, push the woman off the bus, reported Repubblica. Italy's largest daily said police were called to the scene soon after the two men were arrested.

Attitudes towards race and ethnic background in Italy are some of the most prejudiced in Europe, according to research. Italy had the highest per cent of survey respondents admit to having "unfavourable views" about the Roma – 82 per cent in 2016 study of attitudes in 10 EU countries by the Pew Research Centre. At least 69 per cent of people said they had 'unfavourable views' of Muslims, second only to Hungary out of the ten EU countries polled.

Far-right AfD set to become third largest party in German parliament, poll finds
15 August 2017
[TheLocal.de] The Alternative for Germany (AfD) have their nose ahead of the other minor parties in Germany, putting them on course to become the third largest party in the Bundestag after September’s election, a new poll has found. The poll published by INSA and Bild on Tuesday found that the far-right AfD are on course to win 10 percent of the vote at the September 24th vote. That would put them in third place behind the Social Democrats (SPD) on 25 percent and Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) on 37 percent.

The far-right party, who were set up in 2013 and have recently built popularity on their staunch criticism of Merkel’s refugee policies, are only just ahead of the competition, though. The pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) are set to win 9 percent of the vote, as are Die Linke (The Left Party), INSA predicts. The Green party meanwhile lags behind on 7 percent.

Record number of foreigners registered with Sweden's public employment service
14 August
[TheLocal.se] As of July there were a record 76,561 people registered in the agency's Introduction Programme (Etableringsuppdraget) for unemployed foreigners compared to 59,362 a year before. The programme involves creating a plan tailored to each individual newcomer to the country according to their work experience and education in order to equip them for further education or work.

"Many lack an education that is viable in the Swedish labour market. At the same time, too few are choosing to study during their time in the Introduction Programme," Arbetsförmedlingen head analyst Annika Sundén said in a statement.

The increase in people registered with the Introduction Programme this year can be explained by Sweden’s Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) managing to work through much of the backlog of asylum applications from the record 163,000 people who sought asylum in the country in 2015.

At the same time as the number of people it deals with increases, Arbetsförmedlingen will need 600 million kronor ($74 million) more from the government in 2018 than currently allocated, and 900 million kronor more in 2019.

Latest Nørrebro shooting sends man to hospital after police make arrest
14 August 2017
[TheLocal.dk] Another shooting in Copenhagen’s gang crime-infested Nørrebro neighbourhood left one man hospitalised, two days after a suspected gang leader was arrested for threatening police. Sunday night’s shooting took place near the neighbourhood’s Mimersgade street, reports the Ritzau news agency.

On Saturday, a 30-year-old suspected gang leader from the Danish organised crime group known as ‘Loyal to Familia’ (LTF) was arrested for making threats against a police officer, reports the Politiken newspaper. The group is heavily involved in the series of gang-crime related shootings that have taken place in the Danish capital throughout the summer, which now number well into the twenties.
Finally, the key fact we need to understand the situation, dear Reader:
The accused gang leader, Shuaib Khan, was remanded in custody for 17 days at a preliminary hearing at Copenhagen City Court. Khan is reported to have threatened police during a search of around ten members of the group on July 31st.

A power struggle between the Loyal to Familia group and another gang located in the Mjølnerparken and Nørrebro neighbourhoods is reported to be the cause of the persistent shooting incidents.

Denmark’s government was recently reported to be considering using the army for tasks currently carried out by police – such as checks on the southern border with Germany – in order to make more police available to fight the now months-long gang conflicts in both Copenhagen and Aarhus.

The main suspect in the case, a Syrian national in Turkey, was charged with organizing the dangerous boat trips. The boatman was himself a refugee and was offered free travel in return for piloting the dinghy while the third liaised with the family members of the refugees in Germany. The three defendants had come to Germany as refugees themselves.

Turkey kills IS suspect, detains 4 more ‘planning attack'
[IsraelTimes] Ottoman Turkish forces stop vehicle coming into the country from Syria, occupants believed on way to carry out bombing

Ottoman Turkish security forces on Saturday killed one suspected member of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and detained four more said to have been planning a kaboom in the country, local authorities said.

Ottoman Turkish forces in the southern Hatay region bordering Syria stopped a vehicle carrying five suspected IS members after receiving intelligence "they had come to our country to carry out a kaboom", the regional governor’s office said.

It said that four of the suspects gave themselves up but security forces opened fire on the fifth individual after he failed to heed warnings to surrender and attempted to attack them.

Identified as a Syrian national, he later died in hospital despite efforts to save his life, the statement said.

The nationalities of the four detained suspects were not made clear.

The statement said intense investigations were continuing into the incident but did not say if any explosives were found in the vehicle.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Fierce clashes rock Palestinian camp in Lebanon
[IsraelTimes] Islamist gunnies clash with Paleostinian forces for a third day in Ain al-Hilweh camp

Paleostinian forces on Saturday battled radical Islamist gunnies in Leb’s largest Paleostinian refugee camp near the southern port of Sidon, for the third consecutive day.

The festivities first broke out Thursday when gunnies from the small Islamist Badr group opened fire on a position of a Paleostinian force inside Ain al-Hilweh camp, a Paleostinian source said.

Two people were killed in that fighting.

An AFP news hound said the festivities eased on Friday before intensifying again on Saturday, forcing dozens of families to flee the camp and seek shelter in Sidon mosques.

The sound of fierce gunfire and rocket fire could be heard outside the camp as black smoke billowed over Ain al-Hilweh, said the news hound.

The fighting shook the al-Tiri district a few metres (yards) away from a Lebanese army position.

By longstanding convention, the Lebanese army does not enter Paleostinian refugee camps in Leb, leaving the factions themselves to handle security.

The Islamist group is linked to Bilal Badr, wanted in connection with terrorism, who has refused to surrender, according to a Lebanese security official.

In April, his supporters also clashed intermittently for a week with Paleostinian security forces, in violence that left nine dead and more than 50 maimed.

A joint Paleostinian security force, comprising members of the key Fatah and Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", factions, has for months strived to rein in Badr fighters.

Ain al-Hilweh -- the most densely populated Paleostinian camp in Leb -- is home to some 61,000 Paleostinians, including 6,000 who have fled the war in neighbouring Syria.

Several armed factions including bully boy groups have a foothold in the camp which has been plagued for years by intermittent festivities.
