Man shot in Brussels after attacking soldiers
[Jpost] A man was shot in the center of Brussels on Friday evening after attacking two soldiers with a knife, Brussels prosecutors said.

The man was critically wounded but was still alive and in hospital, they said. The soldiers were lightly wounded in the attack, one in the face and the other in the hand.

"With the identity that we currently have, it is a 30-year-old man who is not known for terrorist activities," a spokeswoman for the prosecution service said.

In addition to regular police, Brussels streets are being patrolled by soldiers due to a heightened security threat level in the wake of militant attacks in Paris and the Belgian capital in 2015 and 2016.

In June, troops shot dead a suspected suicide bomber in Brussels' central train station but there were no other casualties, in what authorities treated a terrorist incident.

CIA wary of Pompeo's interest in agency tied to Russia investigation: report
[The Hill] Top CIA officials are reportedly wary of CIA Director Mike Pompeo's interest in the Counterintelligence Mission Center -- an agency closely tied to the ongoing probe of possible ties between President Trump's campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.

According to a report by The Washington Post, Pompeo issued a directive to the agency, which has worked closely with the FBI on its Russia investigation, requiring that it report directly to him.

Officials at the Counterintelligence Mission Center have in turn kept an eye on Pompeo, according to the Post. The report says there is currently no evidence to suggest Pompeo has hindered the ongoing investigation.

Ex Trump Adviser Roger Stone comments on Senator John McCain (Video)
[Stone Zone] Sen. John McCain is #2 in the eyes of former Trump adviser Roger Stone -- and no, he doesn't mean second place.

Stone was at Politicon Saturday in Pasadena when we asked if he thought President Trumpwould be able to get past McCain's skinny repeal 'no' vote. He says no way, and even further ... makes it clear he doesn't think the Prez should let it go.

Truth is ... Stone's been blasting Sen. McCain everywhere since the vote, but this time he's amping up the rhetoric. It's uncommon to see a senior senator/war hero spoken of this way.

Then again ... these are uncommon times, to say the least.

Blue-on-Blue: Bill Nye Hits Disney With $37 Million Fraud Suit Over ‘Science Guy' Profits
Bill Nye is suing the Walt Disney Company and a host of its subsidiaries today for more than $37 million, alleging he didn’t receive his fair share of the net profits generated by his long-running series Bill Nye the Science Guy.

"Plaintiff is informed and believes and thereon alleges that as a direct and proximate result of the Defendants’ breach of fiduciary duty, Plaintiff has suffered damages in the amount of not less than Nine Million Three Hundred Fifty Thousand Five Hundred Sixty dollars (USD$9,350,565.00), the final amount to be proven at trial," says the complaint, dropping some big bucks demands (read it here).

And then the big bucks get bigger, like three times bigger.

"Plaintiff is further informed and believes and thereon alleges that the Defendants, by breaching their fiduciary duties, enriched themselves, at the expense of the Plaintiff and the BNSG Owners, obtaining ill-gotten profits of not less than Twenty Eight Million Fifty One Thousand Six Hundred Ninety Five dollars (USD$28,051,695.00)," Nye does some math at Disney’s expense that alleges to be at his expense.

The 28-page suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court , says that Nye received a check in April 2008 for $585,000 as his share of the net profits. However, a few months later, Buena Vista Television sent a second letter retracting its prior calculations. According to the second letter, Nye instead owed BTV $496,111.

Deadline has reached out to Disney for comment but has not heard back.

Bill Nye the Science Guy ran on PBS from 1994 to 1999 and also was syndicated to local stations. The show aired for 100 half-hour episodes spanning five seasons and was nominated for 23 Emmy Awards, winning 19

The suit that Nye and his lawyers put before the court contends that "the disturbing size of the supposed ’accounting error,’ coupled with the seeming indifference of both BVT and WDC, left Nye suspicious of the veracity of the accounting."

Nye claims that he stopped receiving royalty or participation payments as of July 22, 2008, with the suit stating accountants insisting that he first repay the amount allegedly owed from the "overpayment."

Formally Nye’s action claims fraudulent concealment, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of the convenent of good faith and fair dealing, and various accounting issues.

On the attorney front, the much beloved Nye is represented by Burbank’s Hamrick & Evans LLP.

Roger Stone on the impacts of an Impeachment of President Trump (Video)
[Real Clear Politics] Roger Stone, a former Trump campaign advisor and personal friend of the president, says if Congress votes to impeach President Donald Trump, there will be all-out Civil War in the U.S.

"The people who are calling for impeachment are the people who didn't vote for him. They need to get over it," Stone said to TMZ in an airport baggage claim on Wednesday this week.

"They lost. Their candidate had every advantage: They spent two billion dollars, we spent $275 million. Sorry, we whipped their ass. It is over. You lost," he said.

He added, warning: "Try to impeach him. Just try it. You will have a spasm of violence --an insurrection-- in this country like you have never seen before... Both sides are heavily armed, my friend."

Thailand's ousted PM has fled the country: sources
Ousted Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has fled the country ahead of a verdict against her in a negligence trial brought by the junta that overthrew her, sources close to the Shinawatra family said on Friday.

Yingluck, 50, whose family has dominated Thai politics for more than 15 years, failed to show up at court for judgment in a case centered on the multi-billion dollar losses incurred by a rice subsidy scheme for farmers.

Overthrown in 2014, Yingluck had faced up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.

"She has definitely left Thailand," said one source, who is also a member of the Shinawatra's Puea Thai Party. The sources did not say where she was now.

The Supreme Court issued an arrest warrant after saying it did not believe her excuse that she could not attend the court hearing because of an ear problem, but there was no sign of police showing up at her house.

Lost at sea: The ten sailors who are missing presumed dead
[DailyMail]
Update from ABC News at 2:10 p.m. EDT:The U.S. Navy said Thursday night divers had recovered a second body from the USS John S. McCain, which struck a merchant ship near Singapore on Monday.

The sailor was identified as Electronics Technician 3rd Class Dustin Louis Doyon, 26, a native of Connecticut.

Divers found the body of a sailor in the ship's flooded compartments earlier in the day on Thursday. The Navy identified him as Electronic Technician 3rd Class Kenneth Aaron Smith, 22, of New Jersey.

Eight sailors remain missing following the collision. The Navy said more divers and equipment arrived overnight Thursday to help with the search.

Crews from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia spent more than 80 hours looking for the sailors, who went missing on Monday morning after the McCain, a guided-missile destroyer, collided with a Liberian-flagged tanker, the Alnic MC.

According to the Navy, the search area covered approximately 2,100 square miles east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. The McCain is now docked at Changi Naval Base in Singapore.

Millennials Say They'd Prefer Venezuela's Food Lines Over America's Income Inequality
[Daily Wire] In a new video, Ami Horowitz hits the streets to find out what’s rattling around in the younger generation’s collective mind on the hot button millennial topics of income inequality and socialism -- particularly, the socialist utopia Venezuela, which is experiencing economic collapse, prompting crisis-level food shortages and the eruption of violence on the streets.

Horowitz ended up finding what anyone paying any attention to the Democratic presidential primary last year will not be surprised to learn: the generation which adores "Democratic socialist" Bernie Sanders hates income inequality so much that they’d be glad to stand in Venezuelan-style food lines so others could have as little as them.

Horowitz begins with the general question of "how important is income equality for you?"

"It’s extremely important," says one girl.

"Pretty important -- I work for the working families," says a guy with a beard and a bandana.

"100%. I think that it’s really important and something that has to be taken care of," says another young lady.

FBI Arrest Chinese National Linked to OPM Data Breach Malware
[GIZ] A 36-year-old Chinese national was arrested in Los Angeles this week in connection with a computer hacking conspiracy involving malware linked to the 2014 US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) data breach.

Yu Pingan of Shanghai, China, was arrested on Wednesday while traveling at Los Angeles International Airport. Also identified by the hacker pseudonym "GoldSun," Yu has been charged under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and is further accused of conspiracy to commit offense or defraud the United States.

According to an August 21 indictment , filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of California, Yu collaborated with others, including two unnamed individuals who have not been charged, to acquire and use malware to facilitate cyberattacks against at least four unnamed US companies. The incitement was accompanied by an affidavit signed by an agent assigned to a cybercrime squad at the FBI San Diego Field Office.

The FBI has identified Yu's co-conspirators as living in the People's Republic of China. A spokesperson for the agency could not be immediately reached for a comment.

In a timeline laid out in the indictment, Yu is accused of discussing the installation of a remote access trojan, or RAT, on an unidentified company in June 2011. Roughly a year later, a conspirator allegedly installed malicious files on the network of a San Diego-based company. The same company was allegedly attacked again on or before December 3, 2013.

The Real Reason the Democrats Want to Be Rid of Confederate Monuments
[American Thinker] George Orwell’s dictum, "Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past," is often quoted, and for good reason. But it is usually quoted out of context. The passage begins:

"And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed -- if all records told the same tale -- then the lie passed into history and became truth. "

Then comes the aphorism, and Orwell continues:

"And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory."

"Reality control" they called it; in Newspeak, "doublethink." Taken in its entirety, Orwell’s 1984, published in 1949, presciently described the scenario we now see unfolding in the Democratic Party, the party of the American Left. They intend to erase their own racist past by removing statues and maligning anyone, especially President Trump, who voices an objection. As Dennis Prager has often asserted, "Truth is not a leftist value." It most certainly is not a value of the mainstream media, print or electronic. Our media are part and parcel of the leftist apparatus that seeks to control how our history is remembered. They mean to rewrite it, start to finish, and impose their revisionist version on the rest of us.

#1  Revisionist History is nothing new. Pharoahs erasing the names of past rulers and replacing it with their own. If a decision is made to remove the statue of a truely vicous racist SOB I don't have much problem with that. Just don't throw the baby out with the bath water. We need to remember the past. All of it, good and bad.

Actually you were right the first time. This is a tactic started by Lenin. He intentionally recruited the people most alienated from society and saying they were fighting capitalism. Stalin was recruited in this way.

The article is overthinking it since these people are just out to hurt people and destroy things.

As for the statues, they memorialize the honor and courage of a major subculture of the US. That subculture is a major enemy of the Progressives and therefore it is the SUBCULTURE, not the statues that must be destroyed.

Poll: Majority of Voters Think Trump Keeping Promises, Blame Washington Elites for Delays
[Breitbart] The George Washington University battleground poll found that 51 percent of voters agreed with the statement "Donald Trump had been keeping his campaign promises" with 44 percent disagreeing.

But when asked about the reasons for the delay in getting some of his promises enacted, 52 percent of respondents agreed that "Washington elites are to blame for the delay in passing some of these reforms."

The poll comes at a time when Trump has been increasingly locking horns with top Republican leaders over priorities in Congress. Trump said at a rally in Phoenix, Arizona Tuesday that he was prepared to shut down the government if Congress would not fund a wall at the southern border.

This wall seems to work despite what the Pope preaches. Some countries in Europe have erected barriers to keep from being over-run. The WH has a fence and barriers around it. So yes, a wall should be built across our Southern border to keep illegals out and to control drugs from coming in from Mexico.

Egyptian police kill two Hasm militants in shootout in Beheira
[AlAhram] Egyptian police have killed two members of the Hasm myrmidon group in a shootout in uninhabited areas of Wadi El-Natroun in Beheira governorate, a statement by the interior ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry said the two suspects, identified as Mohammed Younis and El-Sayed Mostafa, shot at police as they tried to apprehend them at their hideout.

They were involved in a range of "violent incidents" recently, the statement said, without specifying further.

Younis was responsible for mobilising and storing explosives within the group, according to the statement.

Hasm has grabbed credit for a number of attacks on security personnel in recent months, mostly targeting police checkpoints.

Security forces have nabbed
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
and killed dozens of suspected Hasm members in the past few months.

Officials have said the group is linked to the banned Moslem Brüderbund.

Arabia
Houthis call Yemeni ally evil
And trust us, if anyone knows evil, it's us!
DUBAI: Fighters loyal to the armed Houthi movement on Wednesday decried as “evil” the group’s main ally in Yemen’s civil war, ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, widening an unusual public rift.

The “Popular Committees,” a body of rank and file pro-Houthi combatants, condemned Saleh’s description of them in a speech as a “militia,” criticizing the former leader who remains one of Yemen’s most powerful politicians and military figures.

“What (Saleh) said transgressed a red line and he could have only fallen into this because he’s evil and void of every good, patriotic or religious characteristic,” the collection of tribal and volunteer fighters said in a statement.

The tactical alliance between Saleh and the Houthis has often appeared fragile, with both groups suspicious of each other’s ultimate motives and sharing little ideological ground.

While president, Saleh waged six wars against the Houthis from 2002 to 2009 and was for many years an ally of Saudi Arabia.

Big switches of loyalty are a feature of Yemen’s byzantine political landscape, particularly since 2011 “Arab Spring” unrest which led to Saleh’s fall in 2012.

A war of words has escalated in recent days between the Iran-allied Houthis and Saleh, who together run northern Yemen.

The two factions have traded barbs on responsibility for challenges such as unemployment and mounting hunger after 2-1/2 years of fighting the internationally recognized government, based in the south and backed by the Saudi-led coalition.

The alliance intervened in the civil war in 2015 to restore the government to power in the capital Sanaa. But the conflict, which has killed at least 10,000 people, is in a stalemate.

The Saudi-led coalition has controlled Yemeni air space since the war began.

Based in the southern port city of Aden, the government struggles to impose its writ over militias and armed groups there, but strife now looms for its northern foes.

In a speech on Sunday, Saleh summoned party supporters to hold a mass rally in Sanaa on Aug. 24, a planned show of force that has deeply irritated the Houthis.

Their leadership convened on Wednesday and recommended the announcement of a state of emergency and suspension of all “party activity,” telling Saleh’s supporters any mass gatherings should be made on battlefronts, not in public squares.

In comments that may deepen Houthi suspicions, the United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Anwar Gargash, spoke approvingly of the rift, saying it “may represent an opportunity to break (Yemen’s) political deadlock.”

India-Pakistan
‘Triple talaq’ outlawed
[DAWN] MUSLIM women in India have reason to rejoice, for they have won the battle against the regressive practice of the ’triple talaq’ which the country’s Supreme Court has ruled as being ’unconstitutional’. According to this custom, a man could divorce his wife by merely repeating the word ’talaq’ (divorce) three times. In a digital age, even text messages and Whatsapp have been used to effect such an ’instant’ divorce. This licence to capriciousness has been the cause of untold misery and financial hardship for women, a sword of Damocles hanging over their heads in the marital relationship. Women divorced in this way have often had to contend with straitened circumstances overnight, sometimes even with the loss of their children’s custody. It was a particularly cruel way of allowing men to control women and keep them constantly in fear of losing the security that marriage provides in a conservative society.

Not surprisingly, the practice of triple talaq -- which many Islamic scholars say is not mentioned in the Holy Koran and is banned in most Moslem countries, including Pakistain --has many champions among Moslem men in India. While maintaining that the practice is ’evil’, they nonetheless want to retain it based on spurious arguments about the fundamental right to practise religion. Curiously, such men have no qualms in embracing modern technology like smartphones -- whereby they sometimes pronounce instant divorce -- even as they cling to outmoded traditions where it suits them. The Moslem religious lobby in India has responded with fury to the court’s ruling, declaring that as far as they are concerned the status quo remains. To counter this defiance, there must be an extensive awareness campaign to spread the word that the triple talaq stands outlawed. We in Pakistain could also do with a similar campaign, for in some backward areas here, this mode of divorce continues to be seen as valid. In fact, women in this country generally have little awareness of the fine print in their nikahnama. It is about time that changed.

Second suspect arrested in probe into Spanish terror attacks is released
[DailyMail]
  • Court heard there is not enough evidence to detain internet cafe owner Salh El Karib, 34

  • El Karib will have to hand over his passport and check in to court every week

  • He is the second of four suspects to be freed, following Mohamed Aallaa

  • They were arrested in aftermath of attacks, alongside Mohammed Houli Chemlal, 21, and Driss Oukabir, 28, the only living members of the 12-strong terror cell

Spanish police identify remains of last terror cell suspect

[IsraelTimes] Police say they identified the remains of the last suspected member of a cell which carried out terror attacks in northeastern Spain.

“Youssef Aalla is the last corpse identified in the Alcanar explosion,” Catalan regional police says, referring to an accidental blast at the jihadists’ bomb factory on the eve of the August 17 assault in Barcelona.

“That is the last known member of the cell” whose remains had not been formally identified, they say.

The explosion also killed an imam, Abdelbaki Es Satty, who is believed to have radicalized the young men in the cell.

It was so strong that “the mushroom cloud that was generated was visible several kilometers (miles) around,” according to court documents.

Afghanistan
Taliban driven back in Baghlan
A coordinated attack by the Taliban was repelled in Doshi district in Baghlan province on Thursday, local officials said.

The fighting started on Wednesday morning when a group of militants attacked the center of the district. The Baghlan-Kunduz Highway was closed to traffic for a couple of hours following the clash which ended on Thursday morning.

TOLOnews reporter Hamid Shirzai said dozens of civilians were caught up in the battle between government forces and the Taliban but many managed to flee.
Footage from a battle line close to Baghlan-Kunduz Highway shows civilians – mostly women and children – running from the area while military tanks and soldiers are firing at the Taliban.

“It was 3pm when people shouted that the Taliban has come to the street. We ran and I narrowly escaped two bullets,” said Abdul Wahid, a resident of Doshi district, who was fleeing with his family.

“No we left everything at home. We were washing the carpets when we heard the fight. I took my baby son when he was sleeping and we left our house,” said Hajira, another resident of Doshi, who was cleaning their house ahead of Eid-ul-Aha.

Reports indicate that civilians were also hurt in the clash but no details have yet been released.

The militants were pushed back after the arrival of the Army’s Special Forces, deputy minister of defense Shour Gul said.

“According to intelligence, Taliban had gathered from all districts of Baghlan and even from Badakhshan and Kunduz (provinces) to close the highway to traffic and seize Doshi district but the enemy was defeated and suffered a heavy casualty toll,” he told TOLOnews.

Local officials said seven Taliban fighters were killed and 15 others were wounded in the fighting.

Baghlan governor Abdulhai Nemati said the defeat of the Taliban was a big achievement for the government forces.

“All the forces from all units were well prepared (for a counterattack). They pushed back the Taliban attack. They (Taliban) suffered heavy losses in the clash,” the governor told TOLOnews.

Swamp Creatures masquerading as GOP taken aback by President's verbal bombs
[The Hill] President Trump’s public fights with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and other Republicans are just making it tougher to move his agenda, say GOP aides, strategists and former senators.

Republicans say the hard feelings between the White House and Senate leader will only complicate the task of passing tax reform, keeping the government funded and raising the debt ceiling -- three top items on the fall agenda.

"It makes it much more difficult obviously. It’s much easier when you got everyone on the same page, in the same boat and pulling in the same direction," said former Sen. Judd Gregg (R-N.H.), who was a counselor to McConnell when he served in the Senate.

A former Senate Republican leadership aide said Trump is only alienating allies by lashing out at them over Twitter.
"Every time the president goes on a Twitter rant he either alienates people whose votes he needs, wastes time that should be spent building a public case for his policies or gives Democrats something to hammer," said the source.

#6  The Pubs don't seem to know what to do with power once they have it. If they are not careful, it will slip away. Seldom does the opportunity come along when a party has the House, Senate, Presidency and the possibility of shifting the balance of SCOTUS. This window of opportunity is narrow. The American voters gave the Pubs this opportunity because the Dems were not representing the people; it was not because they have some great love for Pubs but because they thought the Pubs would hurt the country the least. They were looking for the swamp to be drained.

#11  If this isn't an argument for a small federal government, I don't know what is. Seems like it would be something that Dems and Pubs alike (the voters, at least) could agree on: both sides are f&*king it up, so let's strip it down and move government closer to the people, where we the people can better keep an eye on things. The problems with this are myriad: 1.) Dems think the answer to broken government is more broken government; 2.) the Pubs also think the answer to broken government is more broken government; 3.) eligible voters don't vote, don't know anything about the issues anyway and don't really give a shit until there's a crisis - and then they want to blame someone (typically the other party); 4.) state government is not much (any?) better, suffering from the same problems, just on a smaller scale. 5.) local governments aren't used to thinking beyond basic services, like water, building permits, cops, firemen and skimming a little of the top for themselves (at least, that's the way it is here in Dekalb County).

One might be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that our grand experiment in democracy has failed.

Saving the Bacon
A British farmer thanked firefighters who rescued a litter of piglets and two sows from a barn fire in February by giving them sausages made out of the animals, according to local reports.
MMMM, Bacon!!!
Farmer Rachel Rivers thanked the Pewsey fire station with sausages from the pigs they rescued six months ago when a barn on her farm in England caught fire, the BBC reported.
Very nearly had roast suckling pig.
Rivers told the BBC she promised the firefighters she would bring them some sausage from the pigs, which were reared for meat.
Why else would you raise pigs?
"I gave those animals the best quality of life I could ever give until the time they go to slaughter, and they go into the food chain," she said.
My food pyramid. Pork, Alcohol, Salt, Sugar.
The Pewsey fire station shared photos of the sausages, which have since been deleted, and thanked Rivers for the meat, according to the BBC.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

1 dead in bombing attack in Bakriya

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One civilian was killed and three others were wounded on Thursday when a bomb blast hit an area in western Baghdad, a security source was quoted saying.

Baghdad Today quoted the source saying that the explosive device was placed near commercial shops in Bakriya, west of the capital.

Violence and armed conflicts left more than 500 Iraqis dead and wounded during the month of July, according to a monthly count by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq which excludes security members deaths.

“A total of 241 Iraqi civilians were killed and another 277 injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in Iraq in July,” the UNAMI report said, noting that the security personnel casualties were excluded from the figures.

Baghdad was the second most affected province with 38 killed and 85 injured.

Baghdad has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary groups and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake IS-occupied areas in 2016. While most of of the explosions attacks went without a claim of responsibility, Islamic State has claimed several incidents.

Some security observers believe that even after IS’s main havens across Iraqi provinces are conquered, the group may still constitute a security threat through sleeper cells and lone wolf attacks.

state soldiers have recaptured key town in central Galgaduud region during an offensive on Wednesday.

The allied troops seized Mareer Gur area from Ahlu Sunna fighters following shootout, according to local residents. Situation remains tense as a counter-offensive is imminent.

Back to school ceasefire begins in Ukraine

Both sides in the ongoing conflict between Russian backed militants and Ukrainian soldiers have agreed to a "Back to School" ceasefire, set to begin at midnight Friday, August 25th, according to Russian language news accounts.

The ceasefire is expected to last for a week, to August 31st.

The region was supposed to have a Harvest Time ceasefire July 31st, but that broke down quickly.

Both sides have been party to numerous ceasefires since the first one in the fall of 2014, when the war in southeastern Ukraine went hot; but both sides have done very little maintain the ceasefires.

As with most modern ceasefires, both sides have been getting their licks in before the deadline.

The Ukrainian ministry of defense said in a news report posted on lb.ua that rebel mortar fire was reported in Lugansk, near Novoaleksandrovka and Katerinovka.

Rebel mortar fire was reported at Avdievka and further south, at Chermalyk.

According to rebel media, Ukrainian medium and heavy mortar fire were reported at Gorlovka, and near Mariupol.

A separate report posted on Colonel Igor Gikin's V Kontackte page, quoting unidentified militant spokesmen, said that Ukrainian artillery hit Yasinovataya and the airport. Small arms fighting was reported in Spartak, which is directly adjacent to the Donetsk airport and in Lugansk at Kalinovo.

A later rebel news release on the website of the Donetsk ministry of defense noted that Ukrainian heavy guns have been silent since midnight.

Maj Raza said that Mohammed Yusuf, alias Thelewala, of MQM-L Unit 125 in Qasbah Aligarh was, according to the party, kidnapped allegedly by the Rangers on July 17. Subsequently, Yusuf's body was allegedly found mutilated in Orangi Town's Hawa Goth the same day, according to the party.

The party alleged that Rangers personnel had tortured, extra-judicially killed, and later dumped Yusuf's body there. According to an MQM-L blurb, the Edhi centre buried his body on July 30 after it remained unclaimed, and the family had later identified him via a picture.

Maj Raza said: "The truth is that the law enforcers had conducted a raid on a construction firm in Gulshan-e-Zia of Orangi Town on July 17 for Mohammed Yusuf's arrest but he was not there."

Qatar restores diplomatic ties with Iran amid regional crisis
[DAWN] Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
restored full diplomatic relations with Iran on Thursday, disregarding the demands of Arab nations now locked in a regional dispute with the energy-rich country that it lessen its ties to Tehran.

In announcing its decision, Qatar did not mention the diplomatic crisis roiling Gulf Arab nations since June, when it found its land, sea and air routes cut off by its neighbors over Doha's policies across the Mideast.

The move comes just days after Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

"Qatar has shown it is going to go in a different direction," said Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, a research fellow at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University who lives in Seattle. "It could very well be calculated toward reinforcing the point that Qatar will not bow to this regional pressure placed upon it."

Indian cities on lockdown ahead of verdict in rape trial involving spiritual guru
[DAWN] Several cities in northern India are under a security lockdown ahead of tomorrow's verdict in a rape trial involving controversial and hugely popular spiritual leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim, who has been accused of sexual harassment by two of his female followers.

Tens of thousands of followers of the flamboyant guru and leader of the quasi-religious sect Dera Sacha Sauda have gathered in the town of Panchkula where a Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) special court is set to announce the verdict on Friday.

The guru, who calls himself Saint Dr Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Ji Insan, has denied the charges of raping two of his female followers. The case was investigated by CBI, India's top agency.

The self-styled guru was also under investigation in 2015 for allegedly encouraging 400 followers to undergo castrations at his ashram so they could get closer to God.

Men and women, some with children and babies, have spread out blankets and bed sheets, and settled down around the court complex, which is surrounded by security, to wait for the verdict.

Nearly 6,000 police and paramilitary soldiers have spread out in Panchkula alone and thousands more have fanned out in nearby areas fearing violence in the event of a guilty verdict. More troops have been kept on standby.

Britain
Three Somalis Convicted Of Rape Jailed For Total of 61 Years In UK
[RADIOSHABELLE] Three members of an Exeter street gang who kidnapped and raped a woman they believed was working for a rival gang have been sentenced to a total of 61 years in jug on 22nd August.

Abdiraman Kadir, Abdiraman Abukar and Mohammed Ibrahim were also sentenced for wounding with intent in a knife attack carried out on the same day as the rapes.

Exeter Crown Court heard the men, who were all of Somali heritage, were members of the ’Chyna Crew’ gang, which regularly travelled from Birmingham to Exeter to sell drugs. They were involved in an ongoing dispute with a rival group over the supply of Class A drugs in Exeter.

On 23 February 2017, the three men targeted a woman who acted as a ’runner’ for a rival gang and set about humiliating and assaulting her.

They made her drink water from a toilet and kiss the bottom of their feet. The trio threatened to set her on fire and stab her before taking her to a second address in Exeter where she was raped by all three men.

The court heard that during this time, the three defendants left the flat where they repeatedly stabbed a man they believed was linked to a rival drugs gang. Their victim suffered serious injuries to his legs and lower body.

A fourth defendant, Amber Olivia, who acted as a ’runner’ for the group to deliver drugs, was convicted of possessing a Class A drug with intent to supply and conspiracy to cause GBH.

"Kadir, Abukar and Ibrahim launched a chilling day of violence in two assassinations in Exeter, carefully organised to protect their gang’s reputation. All three defendants denied the offences but prosecutors were able to demonstrate their individual roles in the kidnap, false imprisonment and rape and the knife attack."

Syrian forces encircle ISIS troops in Badiya
BEIRUT: Syrian troops backed by Russian warplanes completely surrounded fighters of the Daesh group in a vast central desert region on Thursday, a monitoring group said.

Advancing overnight, troops north and south of the Badiya desert area met up and seized Jabal Dahek, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
By encircling them, the government forces dealt a “strategic” blow to the Daesh jihadists, said the Britain-based Observatory.

They have been battling for months to retake the Badiya, which stretches from the country’s center to the Iraqi and Jordanian borders and has been held by Daesh since 2014.

Fighting was still raging between the two sides near Sukhnah, one of the main towns in the desert area.

Victory over Daesh in the region is seen as key to the army’s hopes of retaking Deir Ezzor, the last Syrian province that remains nearly completely under Daesh control.

The jihadists have long surrounded government forces in the province’s capital city, also named Deir Ezzor.

Analysts say the Syrian army needs to completely eliminate Daesh from the central part of the desert before it can attack Deir Ezzor, otherwise its troops would be exposed.

According to Fabrice Balanche, an expert on Syrian geography, the regime would have more than half of the country’s territory under its control if it can drive Daesh out of the Badiya.

More than 330,000 people have been killed since Syria’s conflict erupted in March 2011 with protests against President Bashar Assad.

The Beatings Will Continue: Iraqi Edition

ISIS executes 8 in Hawija

Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants burned to death eight civilians, including an infant, for attempting to flee the group’s stronghold in southwestern Kirkuk.

A security source told Alsumaria News on Thursday that the militants had arrested the eight civilians, including two parents and their enfant, before the execution.

The victims were heading to al-Alam region in neighboring Salahuddin province, according to the source.

The militants caged the victims and poured tar on them before setting them on fire, the source added.

Islamic State militants have held areas in southwestern Kirkuk since 2014, when they declared a “caliphate” rule on a third of Iraq and Syria. Since then, militants have executed hundreds of security agents and civilians collaborating with security troops, besides executing civilians attempting to flee the enclave.

Local tribal leaders and politicians from Kirkuk have mounted pressure on the Iraqi government to hasten with invading Hawija, the group’s largest stronghold in the southwest of the province, suggesting that its people were experiencing a humanitarian crisis under the group’s rule as the group continues to massacre civilians attempting to flee the town. The Iraqi government and paramilitary troops are currently focused on recapturing Nineveh’s town of Tal Afar.

ISIS kidnaps civilians in western Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State kidnapped five families over attempting to flee from a region to another in western Anbar, a security source was quoted saying.

Speaking to Alghad Press, the source said, “IS militants kidnapped five families in the middle of desert as they were trying to escape from Qaim town toward Rutba and took them to unknown destination.”

“Most of the abducted people were elderly and children with only three youth,” the source added.

Earlier on the day, more than 17 families reportedly fled IS havens in the towns of Annah, Rawa and Qaim, near the western borders with Syria, towards security deployments in Rutba.

Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition regularly pound IS locations in the province.

Anbar’s western towns of Anah, Qaim and Rawa are still held by the extremist group since 2014, when it occupied one third of Iraq to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate. Iraqi troops were able to return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them.

In late July, a military source was quoted saying that Lt.Gen Abdul-Amir Yarallah, commander of the Nineveh Operations, ordered to besiege IS havens in western Anbar preparing to invade them.

Uganda Court Jails Muslim Leader For Life Over Al Shabaab Links
[RADIOSHABELLE] A Ugandan court has sentenced a Moslem group leader and three associates to life in prison after their conviction on terrorism charges related to threats to harm rivals, a judicial official said.

Over the last few years more than a dozen senior Moslem figures in Uganda have been killed, in most cases bumped off by unknown assailants riding on cycle of violence taxis.

Sheikh Mohammad Yunus Kamoga, who heads Tabliqs, a radical Moslem faction, and 13 others were enjugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
and charged with terrorism and the murder of some other Islamic group leaders.

On Monday six of them were convicted on the terrorism charges but all were cleared of murder.

In a high court session on Tuesday, Kamoga and three others were sentenced to life while two associates were given 30 years each, according to judiciary front man Solomon Muyita.

The court acquitted the group of murder because prosecutors failed to place any of them at the scenes of crime, he said.

Local media quoted defence lawyers as saying they would appeal against the convictions.

About 13 percent of Uganda’s 35 million population is Moslem. The east African state’s Moslem community has various factions that often feud over issues ranging from differing interpretations of Islam to rows over property and leadership.

White House Fingers Mitch McConnell As Media Leak; Believes GOP Leader Divulged Sensitive Intelligence on Trump
[TruePundit] The White House is accusing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of waging a clandestine smear campaign against President Donald Trump, leaking sensitive internal communications shared with the President to the New York Times and possibly other media, according to administration officials.

The honeymoon -- if you can call it that -- appears to be officially over for the GOP leaders. And that might be a very bad thing for McConnell whose popularity is sliding in his home state of Kentucky.

Army won’t act against Haqqani network, says Samiul Haq
[DAWN] Defence of Pakistain Council (DPC) chief Maulana Samiul Haq
...the Godfather of the Taliban, leader of his own faction of the JUI. Known as Mullah Sandwich for his habit of having two young boys at a time...
said on Wednesday that the Pakistain Army would not take any action against the Haqqani network.

Addressing a presser at the National Press Club, where he lambasted US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s recent remarks about Pakistain, he said that those he was affiliated with "were still fighting the Americans in Afghanistan".

In the most dire warning ever issued by a US president to Pakistain, Mr Trump accused Pakistain of "shelter[ing] the same organizations that try every single day to kill our people", despite being paid billions and billions of dollars.

Maulana Samiul Haq, who is the chief of his own faction of the Jamaat Ulema Islam (JUI-S), also issued a call for ’jihad’ to every section of society.

When asked about terrorist attacks being carried out in Pakistain by local actors affiliated with religious groups, the Maulana claimed that no Pak was involved in killing innocent people.

"We should hang Kulbushan [Jadhav] and other spies at once," he said, adding: "The West has been defaming jihad, [equating it] with terrorism, but we need to raise a call to jihad and ask each prayer leader in every mosque to preach the importance of jihad, so that our youth is prepared all the time."

He said: "We are fighting the Americans in Afghanistan and those who cannot fight are waging jihad with their words and pens; the whole nation needs to rise up to defeat the West."

At his presser, the DPC leader took aim at the recent US policy statement on Afghanistan, Pakistain and India.

He alleged that the US was defaming Pakistain for the ills of the Afghan government which, he said, had connived with the CIA and Indian intelligence, killing civilians and security personnel in Pakistain.

He praised China for its prompt reaction to the US president’s speech and said that the leaders of Pakistain should learn how to stand against US designs from North Korea and Iran.

Yemenis pour out in support for former president Saleh
[DAWN] Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis descended on Sanaa on Thursday in a major show of force for former president President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...

...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels has been shaken by mutual distrust.

Tensions have been rising between Saleh and his one-time foe, rebel chief Abdul Malik al-Houthi, who joined ranks in 2014 in a shock alliance that drove the Saudi-backed government of Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi out of the capital and into the southern province of Aden.

The rally marking 35 years since the founding of Saleh's Arab nationalist General People's Congress (GPC) sends out a signal that the strongman remains a force to be reckoned with.

Crowds filled the four-square-kilometre square and poured into the streets of the capital, waving the blue flag of the GPC and carrying pictures of the 75-year-old Saleh.

Saleh ruled Yemen

with an iron fist for more than three decades before stepping down in 2012 after a bloody year-long uprising.

But the strongman retained the loyalty of some of the best-equipped units in the military and later joined forces with the Houthis, after they overran the capital in 2014.

Newly Discovered Ancient Babylonian Base 60 Trigonometry Tablet More Advanced Than Modern Base 10 Trigonometry
[Telegraph] A 3,700-year-old clay tablet has proven that the Babylonians developed trigonometry 1,500 years before the Greeks and were using a sophisticated method of mathematics which could change how we calculate today.

The tablet, known as Plimpton 332, was discovered in the early 1900s in Southern Iraq by the American archaeologist and diplomat Edgar Banks, who was the inspiration for Indiana Jones.

The true meaning of the tablet has eluded experts until now but new research by the University of New South Wales, Australia, has shown it is the world’s oldest and most accurate trigonometric table, which was probably used by ancient architects to construct temples, palaces and canals.

However unlike today’s trigonometry, Babylonian mathematics used a base 60, or sexagesimal system, rather than the 10 which is used today. Because 60 is far easier to divide by three, experts studying the tablet, found that the calculations are far more accurate.

"Our research reveals that Plimpton 322 describes the shapes of right-angle triangles using a novel kind of trigonometry based on ratios, not angles and circles," said Dr Daniel Mansfield of the School of Mathematics and Statistics in the UNSW Faculty of Science.

"It is a fascinating mathematical work that demonstrates undoubted genius. The tablet not only contains the world’s oldest trigonometric table; it is also the only completely accurate trigonometric table, because of the very different Babylonian approach to arithmetic and geometry.

"This means it has great relevance for our modern world. Babylonian mathematics may have been out of fashion for more than 3000 years, but it has possible practical applications in surveying, computer graphics and education.

"This is a rare example of the ancient world teaching us something new."

The Greek astronomer Hipparchus, who lived around 120BC, has long been regarded as the father of trigonometry, with his ’table of chords’ on a circle considered the oldest trigonometric table.

A trigonometric table allows a user to determine two unknown ratios of a right-angled triangle using just one known ratio. But the tablet is far older than Hipparchus, demonstrating that the Babylonians were already well advanced in complex mathematics far earlier.

#10  Neat story. I would like to see a Babylonian spherical trig tablet. Heh.

Dividing by 60 is handy for navigation. One degree of latitude equals 60 nautical miles. One nautical mile equals about 6000 feet. Or one minute of latitude. It makes navigating on paper charts (aeronautical or nautical) easy. Paper charts don't wink out.

#11  Old story. The advance of the Greeks wasn't simple computation, no matter how clever such aids were. It was in the idea of axioms, formal definitions, and proofs. That's what math is ... the rest is application.

Babylonians used the base 60 stuff for their endlessly ornate astrology, and carried it over to land calculations. It was a specialized skill but not one of education, just training.

It's the opium, stupid: ‘Afghan surge guarantees CIA black-ops budget boost'
Russia Today opines.
[RT] The CIA is also overjoyed because its black-ops budget - which is tied to the exponential growth of opium production in Afghanistan - is now secured possibly for another 20-50 years, claims Mike Raddie, co-editor of online site BSNews.

The announcement on US strategy in Afghanistan comes as Donald Trump shakes up his inner circle: chief strategist, Steve Bannon, has become the latest to head for the exit.

The US military said that in a matter of days additional US troops could be deployed to Afghanistan, following President Trump’s speech on a new strategy for the region.

The first new deployments of American military personnel will happen "pretty quickly," Gen. Joseph Votel told reporters on Tuesday, as quoted by AP.

Iraq
Anbar Antix

Iraqi air forces smokes ISIS Bad Guys near Qaim

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Tens of Islamic State militants were killed in airstrikes that occurred in Anbar, according to the Defense Ministry.

In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said, “the air force carried out several successful airstrikes destroying five headquarters and killing tens of militants, who were possessing weapons, in Qaim in western Anbar.”

On Wednesday, the U.S.-led Coalition jets reportedly shelled IS convoy, coming from Baaj desert heading toward al-Rommana region in Qaim town.

Earlier this week, the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said jets dropped hundreds of thousands of leaflets after midnight on Hawija as well as Qaim, Rawa, Annah and Okashat regions with news on victories by troops as well as IS defeats and threatened IS militants that they either have to surrender or die.

25 ISIS Turbans now pining for the fjords

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces killed 25 Islamic State militants in western Anbar on Thursday, while 17 civilian families managed to flee militants-held areas, military media and security sources in the province was quoted saying.

The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said army warplanes, depending on intelligence tips, bombarded IS locations west of the province, killing 25. The statement did not name the targeted location, though.

Aljournal News website quoted a security source in the province saying that more than 17 families fled Islamic State havens in the towns of Annah, Rawa and Qaim, near the western borders with Syria, towards security deployments in the city of Rutba.

The source said the civilians seized the opportunity of chaos which struck the group there as many leaders fled those pockets. He added that they were thoroughly vetted to make sure no militants had hidden among them.

The families were transferred to a camp at the Kilo 18 area, according to the source.

Islamic State militants have held the three towns since 2014, when they occupied a third of Iraq to proclaim their self-styled “caliphate”. So far, there has not been a wide-scale campaign to retake those regions, but occasional offensives by government forces and allied Popular Mobilization Forces have managed to take over several surrounding villages.

IS has been notorious for executing civilians trying to flee its strongholds.

The Iraqi government declared victory over Islamic State in Mosul, the group’s former capital in Iraq, in July, and said it was going to proceed towards other group holdouts, including Anbar. Government troops are currently battling Is out of Tal Afar, west of Nineveh.

Late July, Iraqi army warplanes reportedly dropped millions of messages on western Anbar telling locals that liberation offensives for the province were nearing, and advising them to stay away from militants’ deployments.

Anbar’s borders with Syria had seen occasional encounters between security forces and Islamic State militants.

ISIS HQs near Qaim and Rawa hit with rocket artillery

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Seven rockets were fired targeting Islamic State militants in western Anbar, a security source was quoted saying.

Speaking to Alghad Press on Thursday, the source said, “seven rockets were fired from al-Assad base, the second biggest airbase in Iraq, against IS members in Qaim and Rawa towns.”

No further details were provided.

Defense Ministry said earlier in a statement that tens of IS members were killed in airstrikes that targeted Qaim town in Western Anbar. Meanwhile, the War Media Cell said 25 militants were killed by army warplanes in western Anbar, without naming the targeted location.

ISIS fires mortar rounds near Rutba

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants have fired mortar missiles on western Anbar, a security source from Anbar was quoted saying.

Speaking to AlSumaria News on Thursday, the source said “IS fired six mortar missiles, which fell on different areas in Rutba, 310 kilometers west of Ramadi.”

“No casualties occurred among civilians or security personnel,” the source, who preferred anonymity, added.

Iraqi warbirds destroy bridges in western Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) U.S.-led coalition jets have shelled two bridges in western Anbar to cut off Islamic State’s supplies, a security source has said.

Speaking to Alghad Press on Thursday, the source said, “coalition jets targeted al-Rommana and Hawija bridges in Qaim town, located in western Anbar, to cut off IS supply between al-Jazeera and al-Shamiya regions.”

More Mosul Moslem Mayhem

50 ISIS Turbans die fighting Iraqi kops

Tal Afar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi Federal Police service said Thursday its troops killed 50 Islamic State members during operations to recapture one district in the town of Tal Afar, the group’s last bastion in Nineveh province.

The service’s chief, Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat, said the militants were killed while the forces cleared the Kefah al-Shamali (northern) district west of Tal Afar. He said five booby-trapped vehicles and 40 explosive devices belonging to the group were also destroyed in the operations. Other weaponry were also seized, he added.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared early Sunday the launch of operations to recapture the enclave where military commanders believe up to 2000 fighters are deployed.

Over the past few days, Iraqi field commanders reported progress on the ground, saying government and paramilitary troops had reached the center of the town. Military media said Wednesday that forces told militants through loudspeakers to either surrender or face death.

The United Nations says 40.000 civilians had fled the town while 30.000 are believed to be stranded inside.

The Iraqi government plans to wage further offensives at other IS holdouts in Anbar, Kirkuk and Salahuddin once it is done with the recapture of Tal Afar, which commanders predict to be achieved soon.

Iraqi troops continue advance in Tal Afar

Tal Afar (IraqiNews.com) Several districts have been liberated as Iraqi joint troops resumed their advance in Tal Afar, the last Islamic State’s biggest enclave in Nineveh.

Joint troops of army and pro-government al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) liberated al-Nour al-Oula district, Lt.Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah, commander of Tal Afar Operations, said in a statement by the War Media Cell on Thursday.

Another statement by the media service of the PMUs said, “joint troops liberated on Thursday al-Khadraa district in east of Tal Afar following clashes that lasted for two days.”

The troops also indicated “removing explosives and landmines planted by IS to hinder the troops advance.”

Moreover, joint forces freed al-Jazeera region in east of the town.

“Paramilitary troops are 250 kilometers away from the center of the town,” the statement added.

Several regions and villages were freed in Tal Afar since operations started earlier this week after Iraqi PM Haidar al-Abadi announced on Sunday in a televised speech the beginning of offensive to recapture Tal Afar, which has been held by the militants since 2014, when the extremist group first emerged to proclaim its self-styled ‘caliphate’. This came after 40 days of declaring victory in Mosul, the group’s former capital, where operations lasted between October to July.

More than 1400 Islamic State militants with Arab and foreign nationalities are estimated to be in the town, according to military commanders.

Iraqi forces eject ISIS from 5 villages

Iraqi forces made further gains in their offensive to dislodge ISIS from Tal Afar, seizing five more villages on the eastern and southern outskirts of the city, the military said on Thursday.

In the fifth day of their onslaught, Iraqi forces continued to encircle militants holding out in the city in far northwestern Iraq close to the Syrian border, according to statements from the Iraqi joint operations command.

Within the city limits, Iraqi forces captured three more neighborhoods – al-Nour and al-Mo’allameen in the east and al-Wahda in the west, taking over several strategic buildings in the process.

The advances were the latest in the campaign to rout the militants from one of their last remaining strongholds in Iraq, three years after they seized wide swathes of the north and west in a shock offensive. On Tuesday, the army and counter-terrorism units broke into Tal Afar from the east and south.

The main forces taking part in the offensive are the Iraqi army, air force, Federal Police, the elite US-trained Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) and some units from the Shi’ite Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) that began encircling the city on Sunday.

About three quarters of Tal Afar remains under militant control including the Ottoman-era citadel at its center, according to an operational map published by the Iraqi military.

Located 80 km (50 miles) west of Mosul, Tal Afar lies along the supply route between that city – which Iraqi forces retook from IS in July after nine months of fighting – and Syria.

Tal Afar has produced some of IS’s most senior commanders and was cut off from the rest of ISIS-held territory in June.

Up to 2,000 battle-hardened militants remain in Tal Afar, according to US and Iraqi military commanders. Between 10,000 and 40,000 civilians are estimated to remain in the city and its surrounding villages.

India-Pakistan
Minus-Pakistan formula?
[DAWN] AN uncharacteristically stern response by the National Security Committee to US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s so-called South Asia strategy is a worrying indication of the strategic chasm between Pakistain and the US. With words and phrases such as "outrightly rejected", "scapegoat", "grave challenge", "Afghan war cannot be fought in Pakistain" and "India cannot be a net provider of security" sprinkled across the statement, the NSC has conveyed its unhappiness, perhaps even alarm, at the Trump strategy. Nominally headed by the prime minister, the overwhelming military presence at yesterday’s meeting suggests that the statement is a true reflection of the national security apparatus’s grave concerns. Pakistain’s concerns over the Trump strategy are unsurprising; the strategy has almost universally been declared to be unrealistic and flawed.

From the NSC response, two key concerns of Pakistain can be gleaned. First, the Trump strategy appears to be an endorsement of perpetual war in Afghanistan, when it has long been clear that only "a politically negotiated outcome", in the NSC’s words, can work. Second, the so-called South Asia strategy puts the onus on Pakistain to act without offering to address any of this country’s regional security concerns. Specifically, the Trump administration’s silence on anti-Pakistain Lion of Islam sanctuaries in eastern Afghanistan and its encouragement of India to play a greater role in Afghanistan amount to a puzzling disregard of Pakistain’s concerns. Why is Pakistain expected to act first to advance other powers’ interests and only then its own? Merely labelling something a South Asia strategy does not automatically make it so. Indeed, it is Pakistain that appears to be seeking a true regional solution with its articulation of specific concerns, while the US approach amounts to something akin to a minus-Pakistain formula for peace. Because the US approach is wildly unrealistic, it is also dangerous.

Nevertheless, Pakistain must strive to avoid a strategic collision with the world’s only superpower. The US president’s obvious discomfort with a U-turn from his campaign pledge to extricate the US from Afghanistan presents an opportunity. A true regional approach to the Afghan question necessarily includes Iran, China and Russia, countries that Mr Trump all but ignored in his strategy. For Pakistain, the challenge will be to pull together the diplomatic heft of those countries to cobble together a reasonable alternative to America’s latest approach. Regional ought to mean regional -- a path to peace that allows Afghanistan peace and stability and balances the interests of outside powers in the immediate vicinity. Surely, helping develop a regional consensus and encouraging the US to reconsider its own flawed approach is a better alternative than the dismal possibility of endless war in Afghanistan and the severing of even a transactional relationship between Pakistain and the US.

Angered Marine Goes Public On Awans
[DailyCaller] A Marine who provided key evidence in the FBI case against Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s former IT employee said he is appalled by her claim that Islamophobia led U.S. Capitol Police to frame the former staffer.

Also Wednesday, two of Imran Awan’s relatives went on the record to say they think he would do anything for money.

Andre Taggart alerted the FBI to damaged harddrives and a cache of electronics tied to Imran Awan, a former IT specialist for dozens of House Democrats. Awan is the central figure in a criminal investigation of suspected procurement fraud and violations of the congressional IT network, including diverting data to an off-site server.

Taggart told The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Investigative Group Wednesday that “it was amazing” that Wasserman Schultz, a Florida Democrat, describes Imran as a victim of religious discrimination by law enforcement. Taggart rented the Northern Virginia home of Awan, who had frantically moved out after learning authorities were onto him.

“It pisses me off,” said Taggart, a black Marine who says he votes Democrat. He believes Wasserman Schultz is crying wolf and devaluing the meaning of genuine discrimination, while also exposing herself and the nation to risks.

“I just want to get these [guys] locked up and exposed and now,” Taggart told TheDCNF. “The people who facilitated them should also be locked up, as far as I’m concerned.”

Taggart said he made the decision to no longer be anonymous because he is concerned that his fellow Democrats are making a grave mistake by ignoring a scandal with serious criminal and national security implications.

“I’m absolutely disgusted with everything going on in the country right now, mostly because of right-wing conservatives, but with respect to this situation, political affiliation is irrelevant,” Taggart said.

“Him, his wife, his brother, all working down there — there’s no way they could do this without help. If we can drag Trump and his wingnuts through the mud for the Russia influence that they are having, then it’s only fair that we also expose this s–t,” Taggart said.

After Imran Awan realized the hard drives and electronics had been left in the house he rented to Taggart, Awan threatened to sue him to get the equipment back. Awan also listed the house for sale shortly after signing a multi-year lease with Taggart, the latter said.

“They took advantage of us,” Taggart said, describing a series of financially aggressive and dishonest interactions he said he had with Imran.

Also on Wednesday, an Awan relative, Syed Ahmed, told The Daily Mail that “for the sake of money they would have done anything… [Imran] might have been selling this information.”

Evidence suggests that the Awans were running a ghost employee scheme, collecting $6 million in salaries from taxpayers even though only a few of the six people on the House payroll actually performed IT work. Congressional offices signed off on those time-sheets for unknown reasons.

Wall Street Journal Editor Admonishes Reporters Over Trump Coverage
[NYT]
...whose shrinking newsroom is uneasy for other reasons...
Gerard Baker, the editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, has faced unease and frustration in his newsroom over his stewardship of the newspaper’s coverage of President Trump, which some journalists there say has lacked toughness and verve.

Some staff members expressed similar concerns on Wednesday after Mr. Baker, in a series of blunt late-night emails, criticized his staff over their coverage of Mr. Trump’s Tuesday rally in Phoenix, describing their reporting as overly opinionated.
Really? Expressed to who?
"Sorry. This is commentary dressed up as news reporting," Mr. Baker wrote at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday morning to a group of Journal news hounds and editors, in response to a draft of the rally article that was intended for the newspaper’s final edition.

He added in a follow-up, "Could we please just stick to reporting what he said rather than packaging it in exegesis and selective criticism?"
No wonder the New York Times is shocked. But I suspect Mr. Baker is delighted by the publicity about his position on the subject -- I certainly am.
A copy of Mr. Baker’s emails was reviewed by The New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
Contacted about the emails on Wednesday, a Wall Street Journal spokeswoman wrote in a statement: "The Wall Street Journal has a clear separation between news and opinion. As always, the key priority is to focus reporting on facts and avoid opinion seeping into news coverage."

In February, Mr. Baker fielded tough questions at an all-hands staff meeting about whether the newspaper’s reporting on Mr. Trump was too soft. Mr. Baker denied that notion, and he suggested that other newspapers had abandoned their objectivity about the president; he also encouraged journalists unhappy with the Journal’s coverage to seek employment elsewhere.
It's a top newspaper that employs top 1% reporters, and pays them accordingly. They'll have no trouble finding replacements, while the typically liberal news staff will become somewhat more conservative, a happy differentiator during these competitive times.

#1  Happy and Profitable differentiator.

Imagine what happened without journolist spin. a return to reporting, a news source without a narrative.

Where will journos be able to morally preen in front of their far-left peers? They should resign en-masse to show how irreplaceable they are.

#2  Gerard Baker, the editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, has faced unease and frustration in his newsroom over his stewardship of the newspaper’s coverage of President Trump

That's because he doesn't grasp the fundamentals. He wants to produce a news paper. His staff wants to produce a political broadsheet, but advertize it as a news paper.

#3  Mr. Baker has a a degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics with honors from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, UK. Not a J-school graduate and thus obviously 'unqualified' to the NYT.

Average (whatever that is) Transgender Soldier Unable to Deploy for 238 days
[Free Beacon] The average transgender soldier will spend 238 days recovering from sex change surgeries and unavailable to deploy, according to an Obama administration study.

The Trump administration's transgender ban places deployability as a determining factor into whether to admit transgender individuals into the military. The White House outlined guidelines to implement the ban within six months in a memo to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, the Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

The ability to be deployed to war zones or bases around the world is an issue for transgender soldiers who undergo taxpayer-funded sex change operations, according to a study by the RAND Corporation.

#1  They have no business getting cosmetic surgery on taxpayer's dime. Heck, unless it's reconstruction after an injury, NO ONE should get cosmetic surgery while they're in the military.

#2  They have no business getting cosmetic surgery on taxpayer's dime.

If they're not sure about their gender, can one count on them to be sure about more complicated things like duty & honor?

#3  those with sex organ dysmorphia should not get taxpayer-funded sex change ops.

If you want it done, resign and pay for it.

#4  And if you are transgendered you should be put in non-deployable status anyway.

They require lots of medical attention and meds after. Hard enough to get supplies to a war zone anyway without taking up room for hormone replacement therapy.

Govt bars 65 proscribed outfits from collecting hides during Eidul Azha
[DAWN] The federal government on Thursday placed a ban on the collection of hides of sacrificial animals by proscribed outfits on the eve of Eidul Azha, a list of such organizations has been issued by the Interior Ministry.

The list, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, has been issued by the Ministry of Interior and carries the names of 65 proscribed outfits, including Lashkar-e-Jhangvi

It has been decided that the organizations interested in collecting hides will have to procure NOCs from the area's Deputy Commissioner.

The government also announced that the process of collection of hides will be closely monitored and FIRs against anyone collecting hides by force will be registered under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

It was also announced that the government is going to work on strictly enforcing the National Action Plan in terms of dealing with people who facilitate proscribed outfits economically.

Islamic Krazed Killers shell Syrian Army HQ in Latakia
Latakia (Syria News) Ahrar al-Sharm militia announced, on Thursday, shelling the headquarters of the Syrian Army forces in the countryside of Latakia.

The Spokesman of Ahrar al-Sham militia Ahmed Mohamed said that the artillery brigade shelled the headquarters of the Syrian regime forces in Kinsabba Town and Shalaf castle area, in the countryside of Latakia.

The shelling came as a response on the Syrian army and allied militias shelling that was carried out, at dawn today, on al-Najiya area, west of Idlib, Mohamed explained.

Furthermore, Mohamed added that the Syrian army forces are frequently shelling the areas of al-Hadada Town, Tardin, al-Khedr and al-Tofaheya in the countryside of Latakia.

It is noteworthy that the countryside of Latakia joined the areas that follow the de-escalation agreement signed in Astana peace talks 4; however, the government forces are usually violating the agreement.

Strange, very strange. All appear to be stalwart democracies which have enthusiastically supported the U.S. in the past.

Longtime ESPN Host Shares Name with Infamous Nazi Who Supervised Slave Labor
Alinsky the heck out of the idiots -- make them live up to their own standards.
[JammieWearingFool] After a full day of the left beclowning themselves over pulling Robert Lee off a University of Virginia game so as not to offend anyone, how is it an original host who shares a name with an actual Nazi has survived 38 years at ESPN?

ESPN refused to acknowledge whether or not it had plans to pull pundit Robert Ley off of the air, despite the fact that he has the same name as an infamous Nazi official.

In an e-mail to ESPN, The Daily Caller asked if the sports broadcasting giant had a plan for dealing with Ley, considering the network had already pulled ESPN college football commentator Robert Lee from broadcasting a Virginia football game because he shares a name with a Confederate general.

Robert Ley was a Nazi official who "was made head of the German workers’ front after Hitler’s accession to power."

He "supervised the mobilization of foreign as well as German labour for war work" during World War II and committed suicide during the Nuremberg Trials.

We just hope there weren’t any Nazis named Smith or Jones, otherwise a lot of Americans face increased scrutiny.

Here’s a look at the Nazi Ley:

Robert Ley, (born Feb. 15, 1890, Niederbreidenbach, Ger.--died Oct. 25, 1945, Nurnberg), Nazi politician and head of German labour, who helped supervise the recruitment of slave labour during World War II.

The son of a small landowner, Ley studied at the universities of Jena and Bonn, received a Ph.D. in chemistry, and worked for IG Farbenindustrie, before he was discharged in 1928 for "political activity." He was elected as Nazi member to the Prussian Diet in 1929 and to the Reichstag in 1932.

Ley was made head of the German workers’ front after Hitler’s accession to power. To weld German labour into a solid organization backing Hitler, Ley abolished the democratic trade unions and built up a powerful labour organization designed to facilitate German militarization and war preparations. He was also head of the Bund der Auslanddeutsche (Union of Germans Living Abroad).

With that record, he’s almost worse than Trump!

[DAWN] An official of Sindh Police was among the five suspected kidnappers killed in a shootout in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...

On Thursday, Malir SSP Rao Anwar Ahmed confirmed that Mukhtiar Ali, a policeman from Shikarpur, was among the five killed.

According to the SSP, Ali had come to Karachi earlier this year while the census was underway and had since been involved in cases of kidnapping for ransom.

Iraq
ISIS attacks Kurds in Kirkuk
Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants have attacked the Kurdish Peshmerga troops in Kirkuk, a commander was quoted saying.

“IS launched an attack at al-Bou Mohamed village,” deputy commander of the troops, Firhad Kakai, told the Kurdish Rudaw network on Thursday. The attack was launched from four directions against troops deployed in Daquq.

“Clashes have been ongoing for half an hour,” Kakai said adding that “troops are in efforts to repel the attack without allowing the militants to advance.”

Peshmerga repulsed two attacks by IS earlier this month, which left three personnel killed and eight others wounded.

Peshmerga fighters have been part of the U.S.-backed military campaign to retake IS-held areas which launched in October.
