Home Front: Culture Wars
Curse of the Woke Conservatives
Moved to Page 4

h/t Instapundit
So what does the GOP establishment do in 2018 when it comes before us dirty, nasty normals and tries to make the case that its members deserve being reelected to Congress instead of being tarred and feathered? After seven years of solemn assurances, it couldn’t even get its act together and keep its promise to put a stake through the heart of the abomination that is Obamacare. But hey ‐ when Donald Trump kept his promise to undo DACA, that sure spurred the True Conservatives to action. The deductibles my employees pay just went up two grand a year because if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor or something, yet that sort of real world pain for real world people doesn’t spur our righteous Conservative, Inc., stalwarts to action. But threaten to actually enforce a law Congress passed and cut the monocle-and-top-hat set off from cheap foreign serfs who will vote hard left if given the chance? Now that’s an emergency. All hands on deck!

#4  Not truly conservative by any srtetch of the imagination - McConnell and his beltway cronies have trashed every conservative effort to replace those squishes, starting back with Thad Cochran, and continuing thru today with the jackass crony Strange getting all the wieght those fakers can throw against first Mo Brooks, and now Judge Moore. Same thing going on in Arizona for Flake.

As long as people like McConnel, Cronyn, Ryan, etc are "leadership", the GOP will not act at all, because they want a big government that they control, not one thats smaller and answerable to anyone other than them and their cronies (Including Schumer and pelosi in the cronies)

#9  That's a problem with a two-party system - if you're not happy with your party, the worst you could do to them is stay at home on the election day.
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 09/07/2017 18:23 Comments || Top||

#10  grom, we have third parties. They don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of ever getting anybody elected but they serve one purpose. You can cast your vote for them as a protest against the two main parties. Mostly it's a symbolic gesture but if you have a Dem against a RINO in a really tight race in a conservative district the RINO might be able to see where he went wrong if there are enough votes cast for third parties. Might even smarten him up a bit. Like when Carly Fiorina ran against Barbara Boxer. No way in hell was I gonna vote for Fiorina but Boxer was obviously out of the question too. So I voted third party. Don't think Fiorina got the message though because two years later she was running for president. She might have been CEO of Hewlett-Packard but I never accused her of being smart.
Posted by: Abu Uluque || 09/07/2017 19:42 Comments || Top||

#11  Vote the Third Party, unless this would give the seat to the "wrong" party (contested district).
C-SPAN program pollster/operatives seminar: 25% will always vote for Party A and 25% will always vote for Party B. The battleground is getting 51%+ of the Undecided and if you stay at home and never vote Nobody Cares What You Think! So a Third Party Vote is important because it adds another person to the target group that they have to win over.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Cleveland, Ohio: Taco Bell Employees Fatally Shoot Armed Robber
[AP] ‐ Police say three employees of a Cleveland Taco Bell opened fire on two armed robbers, killing one.

Police have said two masked robbers entered the restaurant early Wednesday and ordered three employees to lie on the floor. Police say three other employees pulled out handguns and opened fire, shooting one of the suspects six times. The other suspect ran off.

The Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday said the man killed was 24-year-old De’Carlo Jackson.

Investigators say Jackson was found with a loaded gun in his hand. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. No one has been arrested. The employees who opened fire are said to be two 19-year-old men and a 23-year-old man.

A Taco Bell spokeswoman told Cleveland.com the company is "shocked" by the shooting and is offering counseling to employees.

China-Japan-Koreas
What War With North Korea Would Look Like
h/t Instapundit
...The "horror" would set in as thousands were killed or wounded. In some estimates, North Korea would inflict 20,000 casualties a day just in Seoul during for the first few days. The herculean effort to limit collateral damage witnessed in our Middle Eastern wars will be impossible to repeat. We will operate within the laws of armed conflict, but significant loss of innocent life would be unavoidable due to the locations North Korea chooses to base or hide its weapons.

We will use cluster weapons that spread bomblets over areas the size of football fields. We will return artillery fire wherever enemy batteries are firing. When optimum for military conditions, we will hit targets in the middle of urban areas; it would be impossible to prevent civilian casualties. To fight effectively, we will have to bomb command facilities in the heart of neighborhoods. We will destroy missiles on mobile launchers even if they are placed in sensitive areas. Our ground forces will pour fire into the enemy without an excessive regard for damage. And, yes, we will bomb targets more widely than in recent decades.
In short, a real war - not a f*cking PC exercise. However, far as I'm concerned,
UN observers are welcome to stay in Seoul's best hotels.

Rodman Offers to 'Straighten Things Out' With Kim Jong Un
[Townhall] Dennis Rodman offered to "straighten things out" between North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un and the United States as tensions mount over the rogue regime’s nuclear tests.

Rodman, who has gone to North Korea several times as a sports ambassador and spent a lot of time with Kim Jong Un, told a British television show he might be able to help.

"For me to go over there and see (Kim) as much as I have, I basically hang out with him all the time. We laugh, we sing karaoke, we do a lot of cool things together. We ride horses, we hang out, we go skiing, we hardly ever talk politics and that’s the good thing," Rodman said, Reuters reports.

India-Pakistan
India army chief: we must prepare for simultaneous war with China and Pakistan
[Guardian] India’s army chief said on Wednesday the country should be prepared for a potential two-front war given China is flexing its muscles and there is little hope for reconciliation with Pakistan.

General Bipin Rawat referred to a recent 10-week standoff with the Chinese army in the Himalayas that ended last week. He said the situation could gradually snowball into a larger conflict on India’s northern border. Rawat said Pakistan on the western front could take advantage of such a situation.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted Rawat’s remarks at a seminar organised by the Center for Land Warfare Studies, a thinktank in New Delhi.

India fought a war with China in 1962 and three wars with Pakistan, two of them over control of Kashmir, since securing independence from Britain in 1947. All three countries are nuclear powers.

Rawat said credible deterrence did not take away the threat of war. "Nuclear weapons are weapons of deterrence. Yes, they are. But to say that they can deter war or they will not allow nations to go to war, in our context that may also not be true," the news agency quoted him as saying.

India last week agreed to pull troops from the disputed Doklam plateau high in the Himalayas, where Chinese troops had started building a road. The 10-week standoff was the two nations’ most protracted in decades, and added to their longstanding strategic rivalry.

Look for Large Auroras
Early this morning (Sept. 6), the sun released two powerful solar flares ‐ the second was the most powerful in more than a decade.

At 5:10 a.m. EDT (0910 GMT), an X-class solar flare ‐ the most powerful sun-storm category ‐ blasted from a large sunspot on the sun's surface. That flare was the strongest since 2015, at X2.2, but it was dwarfed just 3 hours later, at 8:02 a.m. EDT (1202 GMT), by an X9.3 flare, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). The last X9 flare occurred in 2006 (coming in at X9.0).
According to SWPC, the flares resulted in radio blackouts: high-frequency radio experienced a "wide area of blackouts, loss of contact for up to an hour over [the] sunlit side of Earth," and low frequency communication, used in navigation, was degraded for an hour.

Amazon plans $5 billion second headquarters in North America
[Reuters] Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) said on Thursday it plans to open another headquarters in North America and spend more than $5 billion for its construction and operation.

The e-commerce company, currently based in Seattle, said it was yet to zero in on a location, but expects to expand the new headquarters to include up to 50,000 high-paying jobs.

Amazon said it was seeking proposals from local and state government leaders for the new headquarters.

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) had reportedly spent about $5 billion on its spaceship-shaped headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Amazon said its new headquarters should ideally be located in a metropolitan area with more than one million people and one that can attract and retain technical talent.

The company’s Seattle headquarters is spread across 8.1 million square feet in 33 buildings and employs more than 40,000 people.

Amazon expects the new headquarters to be a "full equal" to its Seattle office, Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

One of the Major Logistics hubs for the US Air Force is Tinker Air Force Base, OKC, OK has...more than 26,000 military and civilian employees and is the largest single-site employer in the state of Oklahoma. Israeli air raid on Syrian military position kills 2
BEIRUT (AP) ‐ Israeli warplanes struck a military position near the Mediterranean coast in western Syria early Thursday, killing two soldiers and causing material damage, the Syrian army said.

The airstrike targeted a facility near the town of Masyaf that some said was tied to Syria’s chemical weapons program, in a stronghold of President Bashar Assad that is also heavily protected by the Russians.

In a statement, the Syrian army said the Israeli warplanes fired several missiles while in Lebanese air space, and warned of the "dangerous repercussions of such hostile acts on the security and stability of the region."

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which has rarely confirmed or commented on such strikes.

While largely staying out of the Syrian civil war, Israel has carried out a number of airstrikes against suspected arms shipments believed to be bound for Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, which is fighting alongside President Bashar Assad’s forces. Israel has also struck several Syrian military facilities since the conflict began, mostly near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Assad, not wanting to draw Israel into his country’s war, has never responded.

Hurricane Irma spawns Home Depot plywood wars
[ABC] NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - A fight broke out Tuesday night at a Home Depot store in North Miami as customers sparred about plywood during Hurricane Irma preparations.

There were long lines and limited materials at the store as South Florida residents scrambled to stock up on hurricane supplies.

Local 10 News was there as tensions boiled over between two customers.

"He just hit me," Joshua Shempko told a Home Depot employee, pointing to another customer near the exit.

Shempko said the man hit him during a dispute about plywood.

Texas Voter ID Law Upheld on Appeal
h/t Instapundit
A panel from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, in a split decision, stayed the district court’s granting a permanent injunction against enforcement of certain sections of the Texas Voter ID law. Those protesting the law, claimed it was unconstitutional because it would prevent, or at least deter, voters without a "valid form of ID" from voting. The Fifth Circuit, in a surprising turn, not only applied the law to the issue before it but they also applied common sense.

Former CIA Analyst: NORKS Won't Stop Until They Can Attack Anywhere in US With Nuke
[Townhall] Dr. Sue Mi Terry, a Columbia Univeristy professor and former senior CIA analyst on North Korea, said that Pyongyang will never give up its nuclear weapons. Their aim, she said, is to be able to strike anywhere in the United States with a nuclear weapon.

"What they said is they are going to complete their nuclear program. Perfect their nuclear arsenal," she said Sunday on Fox News. "They are not going to stop until they get there, get to the point where they can attack anywhere in the United States with a nuclear test. They are not going to give up nuclear weapons. Talking is fine but we have to be realistic. They are not going to give up nuclear weapons ever."

Terry’s assessment comes after the rogue regime claims to have successfully tested a hydrogen bomb Sunday that could be mounted to an intercontinental ballistic missile. The test triggered an initial magnitude 6.3 earthquake, and nuclear weapons experts estimated the weapon was up to seven times more powerful than the bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945.

CNN throws in the towel on fake Russian news
[American Thinker] CNN has dismantled its vaunted Trump-colluded-with-the-Russians investigative unit in a wretched concession to reality. The only thing the unit found was an empty well for stories, surrounded by a crust of fake news. The whole caper damaged the network's credibility, and the public just wasn't buying it anymore. So the whole unit had to go.

What a shabby end to what the network had put so much stock in in the heady days of trying to oust President Trump just as he had taken office.

The New York Times attributes the unit's sorry end to confusion in the fact-checking process ‐ which is baloney for anyone who has ever worked in a newsroom ‐ claiming that on one bad story, a lawyer's concerns were ignored. That's not the way it works in most newsrooms ‐ normally, the lawyer has the loudest voice about what goes to press, given the potential for lawsuits, much to the resentment of the reporters. Well, the CNN editors ignored it and paid for it with their jobs when it came back to bite them.

Wife of Dem Paki IT staffer who fled the country strikes deal to return, face charges
[Wash Examiner] A former House Democrat tech staffer who fled the country to Pakistan while under criminal investigation has struck a deal with federal officials to return to the U.S. and appear at an arraignment, according to court documents.

Hina Alvi is the wife of Imran Awan, and both face charges of conspiracy and bank fraud. Both worked for Democrats for several years, and Awan worked directly for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., when she was chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

A document filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia indicates that federal prosecutors have struck a deal with Alvi that would allow her to return to the U.S., but would also require her to surrender her passport and afterwards not book any international travel. The deal only surrounds how Alvi will turn herself in, and is structured so that she can avoid being arrested in front of her children when she returns to the U.S., "during the last week of September 2017."

Alvi, and Awan in particular, are the focus of investigations by the FBI and Capitol Police regarding irregularities for purchases of some computers and other equipment which was later discovered to be missing. The pair, and their associates, could have had access to sensitive government information over the years.

In July, the Daily Caller reported that the FBI seized smashed hard drives from Awan's home.

Despite the computer-related interests, Awan and Alvi are facing charges in which federal officials claim that they used false information to obtain home equity lines of credit, and intended to send the money overseas.

Florida preps for mass evacuations, braces for possible gridlock (Opens to Video)
[CNN] (CNN)Florida Gov. Rick Scott says to expect more evacuations across the state ahead of Hurricane Irma, the powerful Category 5 storm plowing through the Caribbean.

"If you're told to evacuate, get out quickly," Scott said Wednesday. "We can expect additional evacuations as this storm continues to come near our state."

Based on Irma's projected path, which includes Florida's heavily populated eastern coast, the enormous storm could create one of the largest mass evacuations in US history, CNN senior meteorologist Dave Hennen said. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties combined have about 6 million people.
Monroe County, home to the Florida Keys, has already ordered mandatory evacuations. Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, issued a mandatory evacuation Wednesday for areas east of Federal Highway.

Other eastern Florida population centers could also see similar evacuations soon, depending on the path of the hurricane, which is expected to near Miami on Sunday.

Clinton book: Not going after Comey 'was a mistake'
[The Hill] Hillary Clinton believes that it "was a mistake" for her to not go after FBI Director James Comey during the 2016 election, according to a newly released excerpt from her upcoming book "What Happened."

Clinton wrote that she wanted to "hit back hard" at Comey for calling her "extremely careless" for using a private email server as Secretary of State but that her campaign advised her against it, according to excerpts of the book published by The Daily Beast Wednesday.

"My first instinct was that my campaign should hit back hard and explain to the public that Comey had badly overstepped his bounds ‐ the same argument [Deputy Attorney General] Rod Rosenstein would make months after the election," Clinton wrote.

"That might have blunted the political damage and made Comey think twice before breaking protocol again a few months later. My team raised concerns with that kind of confrontational approach."

"In the end, we decided it would be better to just let it go and try to move on. Looking back, that was a mistake."

Comey later reopened the investigation into Clinton’s use of private server weeks before the election as part of the investigation into Anthony Weiner's underage sexting scandal, which Clinton wrote caused longtime aide and Weiner's then-wife Huma Abedin to "burst into tears," in a previously released excerpt.

"What Happened" is set to be released on Sept. 12.

What remains are Clintonian insiders, sycophants, and bottom-feeders (aka the ruling class), many of whom will probably receive a free copy for their years of loyal service.

Gutierrez Unhinged After DACA Repeal: WH Chief Kelly ‘Disgrace to Uniform,'
[Breitbart] Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL), one of the most vocal pro-amnesty voices in Congress, claimed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s administration is essentially endorsing "white supremacy" by winding down former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive amnesty.

He also blasted White House Chief of Staff John Kelly as a "hypocrite who is a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear" who "should be drummed out of the White House along with the white supremacists."

"This Administration is on a very dangerous trajectory towards the full-throated endorsement of white supremacy‐the likes of which we haven’t seen in the open from a sitting President for a century," Gutierrez said in his typically understated manner.

Gutierrez blasted Trump for pardoning former Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio, praising "those who marched at the University of Virginia with torches shouting ’Jews will not replace us,’" and launching his campaign for the White House by taking a strong stance against illegal immigrant criminals from Mexico.

Iraqi warbirds destroy ISIS convoy in Diyala
Baqubah (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army warplanes destroyed on Wednesday a convoy of Islamic State militants in northeastern Diyala, a security commander was quoted saying.

Maher al-Ezzawi, commander of Dijlah Operations, told Alsumaria News that army fighter jets bombarded the convoy at Wadi Thallab (80 km northeast of Baqubah), killing al militants in it.

Ezzawi said the strike was carried out based on “accurate intelligence information”.

Islamic State militants have launched occasional attacks against security forces and civilians in Diyala over the past few months, coinciding with government operations that managed to recapture the city of Mosul, Islamic State’s largest bastion in Iraq, and the town of Tal Afar, their last holdout in Nineveh province.

The government and its military commanders intend to wage further offensives at other Islamic State havens across the country, including Diyala, seeking to mark an end to the self-proclaimed “caliphate” the group declared back in 2014. Commanders have marked Kirkuk’s town of Hawija as the next target of anti-Islamic State operations.

Sweden arrests person suspected of preparing terror offense
[Ynet] Swedish prosecutors say a person has been jugged
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
in southern Sweden on suspicion of preparing a terror offense.

Prosecutor Ewamari Haggkvist says the person was arrested Tuesday, adding the suspicion "is reasonable."

She said Wednesday she could not give further details but "the reason for the person being arrested is that the suspect could damage the investigation."

The Aftonbladet tabloid said the man was in his late 30s and his crime was committed after Aug. 21.

Haggkvist said a Swedish court would have to decide before Friday whether to hold the person in pre-trial detention.

17 ISIS Turbans die in Tal Afar

Tal Afar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces killed 17 Islamic State members in Nineveh on Wednesday as they continue efforts to purge areas recaptured from the militant group, military media said.

The Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said the army’s 15th division killed 17 militants while combing the Ayyadiah region, northwest of Tal Afar, Islamic State’s last bastion in Nineveh which joint forces took over late August.

Six of the killed militants, who attacked the army force during the combing patrols, wore explosive belts, according to the media service.

Troops also managed to set free three women who were held by the militants, the statement added.

Iraq government forces recaptured Mosul, Islamic State’s former capital in Iraq, early July, and later headed west to Tal Afar, regaining control there late August. Militants had lost up to 30.000 fighters during both campaigns, according to military officials.

The Joint Operations Command has marked the IS-held town of Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk, as its next target of operations. Islamic State militants are still holding a few remaining havens in Anbar and Salahuddin-Diyala borders.

India's top court tells government to stop cow vigilantes
[DAWN] India's top court proposed measures on Wednesday to stop what it called "growing violence by vigilantes" who claim to be protecting cows, revered as holy by Hindus.

India is reeling from a spate of horrific lynchings by Hindu murderous Moslems mostly targeting the country's Moslem minority, who have historically eaten beef.

Critics say that murderous Moslems emboldened by the current Hindu nationalist government's tough stance on cow slaughter are using beef as a pretext to target the community.

The Supreme Court was responding to a private petition from Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of India's independence hero Mahatma Gandhi.

The "anti-Islam" scandal behind Godiva's liquor-filled sweets
[Jpost] Godiva announced it will no longer produce liquor-filled desserts, leading some to claim the company is bowing down to Islamic law.

Godiva, the fabled Belgian chocolates producer, has recently come under the fire of the critics after it announced in April of this year that it would discontinue the production of its alcohol-filled pralines in order to appeal to a "wide universal audience."

This week, Belgian media announced that the liquor-filled pralines have been taken of the shelves in all 80 countries the company sells sweets in.

Critics were also quick to point out that a decade ago, the company changed hands and had been transferred to the ownership of the Turkish company Yildiz Holding.
Soon thereafter, social media was abuzz with speculation that the sweets conglomerate made the change in order to increase its sales in the the Islamic and Arab world ‐ seeing as the consumption of alcohol is forbidden (haram) in Islam.

Critics were also quick to point out that a decade ago, the company changed hands and had been transferred to the ownership of the
Ottoman Turkish company Yildiz Holding.

Outraged lovers of Godiva's liquor-filled sweets took to social media to express their dismay, going so far as to discuss the option of boycotting the company. They even took to calling the sweets "Halal chocolates," referencing what they believe is the real reason behind the company's decision to stop manufacturing the chocolates in question.

"They are no longer Belgians," claimed some offended former-clients.

This is not the first time Belgians have been complaining about traditional foods are being tweaked to match the changing demographics of a pluralistic Europe. In 2015, the makers of Sirop de Liège, a Belgian favorite since 1902, announced they will seek a Halal certificate to gain access to the Islamic markets of Indonesia and Egypt.

Just like in the Godiva case, clients felt the change is an unwelcome one, leading some to post angry comments on Facebook stating they will throw away their syrups and that it's outrageous to "force" non-Moslems to eat Halal foods.

Lycian-era mausoleum destroyed in Turkey’s Antalya
[Hurriyet Daily News] A 2,500-year-old mausoleum in the southern province of Antalya has become the victim of vandalism.

Considered one of the symbolic mausoleums of the Lycian era, the mausoleum, located in the Gölova neighborhood, 12 kilometers away from the Elmali district, had classical-age paintings and Byzantine-era decorations. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
the inside and outside walls of the structure have been scraped off and painted with colored paints.

"A 2,500 year old mausoleum is the victim of graffiti. It is disappearing in front of us," said Ertugrul Gun, a local, who reacted against the situation.

"We are sad about this vandalism against historical values. We have sent photos to various directorates to clean the structure and protect it. I hope it will be protected before it sees more damage," said Gölova Mayor Ali Kucuk.

"I was very sorry when I saw the structure. It was completely destroyed. We have ordered for the writing to be cleaned using a nutshell. We do not use the sanding method because it may cause scratches," said Antalya Relievos and Monuments Director Cemil Karabayram.

The structure, dating back to the fifth and sixth century B.C., was examined by U.S. Professor Machteld J. Mellink. The structure had previously been damaged by treasure hunters.

Baghdad Bomb and Bullet Bulletin

1 dead in double bombing attack

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) One civilian was killed, seven others were wounded in two bomb blasts that occurred in north and south of Baghdad, a security source said.

“One person was killed, while two others were injured as an IED, placed near a wholesale store in al-Hamamiyat village in Taji region, north Baghdad, went off,” the source told Baghdad Today on Wednesday.

“Five others were injured due to a blast caused by a bomb, placed near a market in al-Mahmoudiya region, south of Baghdad,” the source added.

On Tuesday, six people were reportedly killed and injured in two blasts in north and west of Baghdad.

Baghdad has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary groups and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake IS-occupied areas in 2016.

10 ISIS Turbans smoked in airstrikes in Qaim

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Fighter jets have shelled a store for Islamic State militants in western Anbar, leaving ten members killed, a security source said.

“Warplanes bombarded an IS store in Qaim town, Anbar, leaving it completely destroyed with ten members killed,” the source told Alghad Press on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, coalition jets pounded house of IS leader Hilal Ismail al-Salmani in the town of al-Qaim, killing him and seven of his companions in Qaim.

Last week, the Defense Ministry’s War Media Cell said the air force bombarded six IS locations in Qaim, killing 94 members, including a senior security commander and a close aide to the group’s supreme leader abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Anbar’s western towns of Anah, Qaim and Rawa are still held by the extremist group since 2014, when it occupied one third of Iraq to proclaim a self-styled Islamic Caliphate. Iraqi troops were able to return life back to normal in the biggest cities of Anbar including Fallujah, Ramadi and others after recapturing them.

Fighter jets from the Iraqi army and the international coalition regularly pound IS locations in the province.

Late July, Iraqi army jets reportedly dropped millions of leaflets on western Anbar telling locals that liberation offensives for the province were nearing.

Iraqi Kurdish leader Barzani vows to hold independence referendum despite objections
[Hurriyet Daily News] Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government’s (KRG) President Masoud Barzani has once again said the referendum on independence scheduled to be held on Sept. 25 will not be delayed if no better alternative emerges, as the Ottoman Turkish, Iraqi and regional authorities, as well as the United States and Britannia, vocally oppose the vote.

Speaking to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
’s al-Arabiya on Sept. 5, Barzani said his objective is "to achieve independence for the nation" and once again vowed that his own duties "will finish after independence is achieved," adding that he "was born for the independence of Kurdistan."

Barzani previously said he will not stand in presidential elections scheduled to be held on Nov. 1, nor will he support his family members running.

During the interview, Barzani said those calling for the referendum to be delayed should "provide an alternative."

Also on Sept. 5, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim reiterated The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
’s strong opposition against the referendum, describing the move as a "grave mistake."

India-Pakistan
BRICS declaration
[DAWN] The message is uniform from friend and foe alike: Pakistain’s tolerance for externally oriented krazed killer groups is no longer acceptable and a serious national effort needs to be made if the country is to remain on the right side of international opinion.

The significance of the BRICS declaration that included a condemnation of violence in Afghanistan and a specific mention of the Afghan Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
and Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
should not be underestimated.

The presence of India in the five-nation bloc clearly influenced the language of the declaration in implicitly pointing towards Pakistain, but China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa will only have added their voices to the growing chorus of concern because of genuine considerations of their own.

Pakistain must not make the mistake of dismissing the signal from the world’s leading emerging economies. It does not appear to be an aberration and cannot simply be ascribed to overwrought allegations and concerns of India, Afghanistan and the US.

In truth, while Pakistain has made significant strides in the domestic fight against militancy, there is a contradiction at the heart of the country’s efforts to fight militancy, terrorism and extremism: an unwillingness to acknowledge that past policies, and an ongoing selective approach to fighting militancy, have contributed to the problem.

Without an honest reckoning with the past, the reorientation of the state from one that supported jihad under the umbrella of the Cold War to one that recognises the great cost that it inflicted on Pakistain’s economy, society and standing in the global community cannot be complete. And without recognising that Pakistain’s record in fighting militancy, terrorism and extremism at home has been patchy and inadequate, greater success is likely to prove elusive.

The bewildering aspect of the state’s anti-militancy strategy is that it continues to pursue perfunctory measures such as banning krazed killer groups without any real determination to shut down the operations of those groups in various guises. The only real attempt at drawing up a comprehensive anti-militancy strategy is the flawed National Action Plan, which has been implemented poorly and without uniformity.

Certainly, some outside allegations by India, Afghanistan and the US either seek to place excessive blame on Pakistain or are meant to try and dissuade the latter from pursuing its legitimate security interests. It is also the case that the important gains Pakistain has made in its fight against militancy often go unacknowledged and unappreciated.

But on this there must be clarity: Pakistain’s fight against militancy is its own fight for its own long-term peace and prosperity. Too often external criticism has been used by the state to deflect and deny legitimate critiques of its anti-militancy policy.

The BRICS declaration suggests an international trend that Pakistain cannot afford to ignore. The domestic fight against militancy must be made smarter, harder and more purposeful.

#2  Welcome to the real world of 4000 years+ of human slavery. The turn around started in earnest among Protestant British colonies in North America around the early 18 Century, not that you would ever recognize such an event in human history as the Left needs to destroy real history. Where's the guilt grafting in that? /rhet question

#3  Slavery enabled societal advances - the labor of slaves freed time and generated resources for a few critical minds to create significant things. In Egypt and Rome in the distant past, and significantly, in the creation of the United States - men like Washington and Jefferson would not have been available to lead the Revolutionary army or write the Declaration of Independence, for instance, and independence was a very close victory. Black Americans should be given credit for, and take pride in, their role in creating this country - even if their role was not voluntary.

#4  My impression was that: (1) By the 1800's there were already more than enough slaves (breeding stock excess to plantation workforce, to be brutally clear) in the New World -- mass slavetrading was not cost effective; (2) There was money to be made selling Opium in the Far East (Chinese Products for Opium); and (3) the Old Merchant Families could feel righteous about not doing what they had effectively already stopped doing.

Erasing the Obama legacy: US Holocaust museum pulls study on Obama inaction in Syria
[IsraelTimes] Official memorial rethinking research after being criticized for saying ex-president was correct in doing little to prevent slaughter

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum will re-evaluate a study that said there was little the B.O. regime could do to prevent genocide in Syria after removing the document from its website.

The Tablet online magazine, which obtained portions of the study, reported that it was met with "shock and harsh criticism by prominent Jewish communal leaders and thinkers."

The paper, which was to be released officially on September 11,
...an interesting choice of date...
argued that "a variety of factors, which were more or less fixed, made it very difficult from the beginning for the US government to take effective action to prevent atrocities in Syria, even compared with other challenging policy contexts."
"It wasn't his fault. Stop picking on the Lightbringer!"
A message on the museum’s website said: "Last week the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide released a research study that examined several decision points during the Syrian conflict. Since its release, a number of people with whom we have worked closely on Syria since the conflict’s outbreak have expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
s with the study. The Museum has decided to remove the study from its website as we evaluate this feedback."

The report used computational modeling and game theory methods, as well as interviews with experts and policymakers, to determine that US involvement in the wake of the 2013 chemical weapons attack in Ghouta would not have reduced atrocities in the country and may have contributed to them, according to Tablet.

Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
has attacked with poison gas and sent to prison camps tens of thousands of Syrians since his country’s civil war began six years ago.

Abraham Foxman, the director of the Center of the Study of Anti-Semitism at the Museum of Jewish Heritage-A Living Memorial to the History, told Tablet that the museum leadership must have determined it "made a misstep" in undertaking the report, pointing out that the genocide has not yet ended and that such a judgment is beyond the museum’s mandate.
Yes.
Foxman, who noted that he served three times on the Holocaust Commission, also said, "I believe that it’s appropriate ‐ indeed, it’s imperative ‐ for the museum to deal with questions of genocide in contemporary current events."

Longstanding critics of B.O. regime foreign policy noted on social media that at the end of his term, Barack Obama
I mean, I do think at a certain point you've made enough money...
appointed to the Holocaust museum board a slew of White House staffers, including some involved in the Syria decisions, and questioned whether this influenced the study.
Given the habitual behaviours of that lot, it seems very highly likely.
Tablet pointed out that the study was launched before the appointments.
Yes, but they knew who was doing the appointing.
Some of the board members who had formerly worked for the B.O. regime said they were not aware of details of the report until its completion.
And the others?
Holocaust museum board members are not typically involved in its day-to-day activities.
No doubt that's true, but these were not typical board appointees.

Obama Made Dreamers Eligible For Federal Giveaways and Large Tax Refunds
Liberals claim that so-called "Dreamers" are not a burden on the economy or the budget, but that’s not quite true. It is true they are not eligible for food stamps or welfare, but they definitely are eligible for major benefits, especially huge tax refunds ‐ even though they may have paid no taxes.

The reason is that Obama made them eligible for Social Security numbers that allows them to collect disability and SSI benefits. But maybe the most valuable benefit they get is tax refunds. Let’s say a Dreamer has four children. The Dreamer would get $1,000 dollars apiece for each child and an Earned Income Credit that could amount to $6,269. That means the Dreamer could add up to $10,629 a year, every year.

According to the Daily Caller, which performed a fact-check on the subject:

Illegal immigrants are ineligible for most public benefits according to federal law, including means-tested programs like Medicaid, food stamps and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Notable exceptions include emergency medical care and federal disaster relief.

But DACA allows recipients to apply for social security numbers, which are required to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a major tax benefit for lower-income earners. The program allows recipients to participate in Social Security and Medicare as well, but they generally cannot receive benefits until retirement age.

Generally speaking, DACA recipients are still ineligible for many forms of public assistance. Nonetheless, the program does expand access to some federal benefits.

There is another major problem with Dreamers inasmuch as they can get a driver’s license using their Social Security card and can register to vote using just their SS card. It is also almost impossible to catch them if they vote illegally. There are at least 800,000 Dreamers. You do the math.

In New York state, they grant benefits to eligible Dreamers:

What public benefits are non-citizens with deferred action eligible for in New York?

Non-citizens granted deferred action are considered "permanently residing under color of law" (PRUCOL) and are eligible for all state funded benefits, including Medicaid, Family Health Plus, the Family Planning Program and for cash assistance (welfare) through the Safety Net program.

Once an individual can provide proof that a request for deferred action has been filed, (s)he is eligible to apply for New York’s medical health insurance benefits even before a decision is made by USCIS. To be eligible for cash assistance, however, the person must wait until USCIS actually approves the request for deferred action. It should be kept in mind, though, that the receipt of cash assistance, unlike medical assistance, can raise public charge concerns if the individual at some later date becomes eligible to apply for permanent resident status.

Non-citizens with deferred action are not eligible for any federal public benefit, including federal financial aid, food stamps, housing subsidies, and the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan Program. They will not be eligible to purchase health insurance through the federal Healthcare Exchange when that becomes operational in 2014.

No wonder so many illegals come into the country. It’s like waking up in the morning with a money tree in the front yard.

SC reprimands NAB's performance in Balochistan, calls it a 'facilitator of corruption'
[DAWN] Referring to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as a "controller of corruption", the Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed its dissatisfaction with the institution's performance in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
.

A three-member bench of the apex court was hearing a petition seeking bail of former Balochistan food minister Asfandyar Kakar who was tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
by NAB earlier this year on charges of embezzlement.

"Important cases in Balochistan have seen long delays," Justice Dost Mohammad, who was presiding over the apex bench, said during the hearing.

Justice Faiz Essa remarked that Director General (DG) NAB Balochistan, Irfan Naeem Mangi ─ who was a member of the Joint Investigation Team that investigated allegations of money laundering against the Sharif family ─ should be made a co-accused in the case against Kakar due to the poor performance of the NAB.

The judge added that NAB authorities were misusing the law and matters could only be improved by opening cases against them.

Justice Mohammad, however, said that due to Mangi's involvement in the Panamagate JIT, he could not be included in the case against the former provincial minister.

"Those caught red-handed in Balochistan are released by NAB. The bureau has made a joke of all corruption cases," Justice Essa remarked, adding that the trials due to be completed within 30 days do not get wrapped up even in 30 months.

"To this day, NAB has not completed any trial within 30 days," the justice said. "Rs701 million have been stolen, but NAB is sleeping."

"Those who draw a salary from the taxpayer's money are abusing the law," Justice Essa said.

Raped woman had to ‘bribe’ police for filing case
[DAWN] RAHIM YAR KHAN: A married woman who was allegedly raped and blackmailed because of a video clip of the rape made by her tormentors, had to bribe lower police staff to get a case registered against the suspects after a senior officer declined to help her in getting justice.

Narrating her ordeal at the local press club where she had come with her husband on Tuesday, ’N’, a resident of Mauza Bhuta Kot of Sheikh Wahan area, said she worked as a match-maker and was lured to Rahim Yar Khan by a relative on the pretext of visiting a family in Multan for the purpose in May this year.

Instead of taking her to Multan, she said the prime suspect ’H’ and his friend ’J’ took her to a house here in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, that was owned by one of their acquaintances. She said at the house, both ’H’ and ’J’ raped her in the presence of their friend and the suspects made a video clip of the crime.

The suspects threatened her that they would post the clip on social media if she informed anybody about the rape, she said. She said later the suspects started blackmailing her and threatened her they would sell the video clip if she did not pay them money.

She claimed that she had been giving the suspects money on different occasions by selling her cattle and even jewellery and so far they had extracted around Rs300,000 from her. Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch shot Black Bart's gun out of his hand......
she said the suspects sold the video clip to many persons against Rs1,000 each despite taking money from her.

Being unable to arrange more money, she said she approached the Saddar deputy superintendent of police (DSP) with a complaint but he did not listen to her.

Later, she lodged an FIR (No 250/17) on Aug 31, 2017, against the suspects under Section 376 of the Pakistain Penal Code after paying Rs15,000 bribe to a sub-inspector Ehsan and the moharrar of Saddar cop shoppe.

After that the police incarcerated
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
’H’ while ’J’ and the house owner got interim bails. She said now the suspects were forcing her for a "reconciliation" and threatening her with dire consequences if she pursued the case.

She said she did not get a case registered under cyber crime law because she was illiterate and did not know about it.

The district police public relations officer denied all the allegations levelled by ’N’ against police officials, saying the police would act according to the law in the light of the medical report of ’N’ that was still awaited.

Arabia
Houthis prepare dialog among coalition members
Riyadh- Contradictory statements of Houthi and Saleh militias have reflected the deep dispute between the coup parties in Yemen.

Yemen’s former president Ali Abdullah Saleh denied on Monday any tension between his party (General People’s Congress) and Houthis. Muhammad Ali al-Houthi, the head of the Revolutionary Committee, however, put a condition of forming a committee of wise men in case Saleh wishes to settle the disputes between the coup parties.

Further, humanitarian organizations monitored Houthi militias arresting of pro-Saleh supporters – some were seen removing Saleh posters following orders of Houthi leaders.

Vice Premier and Minister of Civil Service Abdulaziz al-Jabari stated that the Yemeni developments unveil deep disputes among insurgents no matter how much they endeavor to conceal them – he added that both parties adopt different programs: one dreams to return to authority and the other executes the Iranian regime approach and practices a sectarian program in the country.

“Implementing wilayat al-faqih in Yemen is against the will of Yemeni people who believe in coexistence, peace and removing discrimination, and see that reaching the authority occurs via democracy and elections,” Jabari told Asharq Al-Awsat.

He added that Houthi militias want to control Yemeni territory while the ousted president wants to maintain his condition and popularity to guarantee his position in any potential political settlement.

Journalist Waddah al-Jaleel said that, “Houthis are aware that Saleh is fully ready to sell them out in any political deal with the other parties. Therefore, they want to besiege him and eradicate his force, if not get rid him of him before he sells them out. In this way they become representatives of the Zaidiyyah geography being fought over.”

Europe
Two arrested after 'bomb factory' discovered near Paris
[TheLocal.fr] Two people have been arrested after police found components that can be used to make bombs in an apartment in a Paris suburb.

Two men have been arrested after police found components that can be used to make explosives in an apartment in a Paris suburb which media reports describe as a "bomb factory."

Security forces rushed to the scene after a plumber working in the building in the southern suburb of Villejuif saw what he thought resembled detonators and called the police.

The building was evacuated and work ordered to be stopped on a building site next to the apartment block while bomb disposal experts examined the material.

The flat was empty at the time of the discovery of the suspect devices and the two men were arrested in a car in the nearby suburb of Le Kremlin-Bicetre, media reports said.

One of them was reportedly the tenant of the apartment.

France Info radio said that the flat was like a "laboratory" and contained sulphuric acid, acetone, oxygenated water - ingredients that can be used to make explosives such as the TATP favoured by jihadists - as well as electric components, batteries and basins.

Other media reported that gas canisters were also found.

Traces of TATP -- known as the "mother of Satan" -- were found in a house where the alleged attackers in the twin jihadist assaults in Spain last month that killed 16 people were believed to have been trying to build bombs. TATP is a homemade explosive created by mixing precise quantities of acetone, oxygenated water and sulphuric, hydrochloric or nitric acid -- all of which are easily available in high street stores.

Nail polish remover is essentially acetone, while oxygenated water is a commonly used disinfectant.

The mixture creates a coarse powder of white crystals that requires only a basic detonator to explode, triggering a huge blast of burning gas.

The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed that "elements that may be part of the composition of explosives" were found in the flat in Villejuif.

Its counter-terrorism section has opened an investigation under potential charges of "criminal terrorist association" and "possession, transportation and production of explosive substances in relation with a terrorist action by an organized gang."

France is still under a state of emergency after November 2015 terror attacks killed 130 people.
The Times of Israel adds:
One of the locked away
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
pair, aged 36 and 47, is the owner of the flat, they said.

Poland's stance on migrants unchanged despite EU court ruling
6 September
[Ynet] Poland will continue to refuse to accept migrants under a European Union relocation scheme despite a ruling by EU's highest court that Brussels had the right to force member states to take in asylum seekers, Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said on Wednesday.

"I was convinced that such a decision would be made (by the court), but this absolutely does not change the stance of the Polish government with respect to migration policy," Szydlo told reporters on the sidelines of a business conference.

Earlier on Wednesday, the European Union's highest court dismissed complaints by Slovakia and Hungary about EU migration policy.

Hungary Says EU Migrant Quotas Ruling 'Irresponsible'
6 September
[AnNahar] Hungary on Wednesday slammed as "irresponsible" a rejection by the EU's top court of its challenge to a scheme to relocate thousands of migrants around the bloc via mandatory quotas.

"The decision by the court... is irresponsible and we believe that this decision threatens the security of all of Europe," Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said after the ruling by the European Court of Justice.

He vowed to use "all legal means" against the "absolutely unacceptable" judgment, calling it "the result of a political decision not the result of a legal or expert decision".

"Politics has raped European law and European values. This decision practically and openly legitimates the power of the EU above the member states," he said.

EU orders Sweden to shut down border checks
6 September
[TheLocal.se] The EU has ordered Sweden to end its border controls by mid-November, saying they are not needed anymore.

The measures in the passport-free Schengen zone were only supposed to be temporary and originally designed to last six months, but they were extended by a further half a year in May 2016, then three months more the following November. According to EU rules, the extension can only be granted three times, and the last one is due to expire on November 12th.

The controls have been unpopular among commuters in the south of Sweden and in the Copenhagen region in Denmark, who have complained that they make journeys across the Öresund Bridge more time consuming.

Report: Swedes born in Asia, Africa vote less, more left-wing
File under: Not seeing the forest while meticulously counting the trees
6 September
[TheLocal.se] Swedish nationals born in Africa and Asia tend to vote significantly less than other Swedes, and are more prone to vote for left-wing parties, a new government-commissioned report shows. The report showed that not only is the voting participation among people born in Africa and Asia significantly lower than among other Swedes, but warned that due to current migration trends, this gap is at risk of widening, at the cost of a balanced and well-functioned democracy.

“Among Swedish citizens with origins in the Nordics, North America, Oceania and Latin America, voting participation was at around 80 percent, while the share of Swedes who voted and were born in Africa and Asia was below 70 percent,” the report said. “If democracy loses its legitimacy among large groups in society, there’s a risk it will shake to its core.”

Commenting on the findings in an opinion piece in Dagens Nyheter, authors and researchers Pieter Bevelander and Mikael Spång wrote that: “The fact that most of those who immigrate to Sweden today come from these regions indicates that voter participation could fall further in the future.”

'Good time to take in your share of refugees': UN to Denmark
6 September
[TheLocal.dk] Low numbers of refugee arrivals mean that Denmark should be able to accept its quota of transferable refugees, says the UN. But the country’s two biggest political parties, the Venstre (Liberal) Party, which is the senior partner in the coalition government, and the opposition Social Democrats say that it is too early for Denmark to accept refugees relocated to it by the UN, writes Politiken.

“Since 2015, the number of asylum seekers in Denmark has fallen dramatically. This year only approximately 2,000 new asylum seekers have come to Denmark. This would be a very good time for Denmark to resume accepting quota refugees,” Melissa Fleming, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, told Politiken.

The quota system enables the UN to relocate refugees whose needs cannot be met in countries that neighbour the conflicts they have fled from. The UN is currently able to relocate one percent of its registered refugees, although as many as ten percent actually need to be relocated, according to Politiken’s report.

Denmark has accepted 500 of the UN’s quota refugees annually since 1989 – until last year, when it suspended its participation in the programme. Several other countries have also stopped accepting or reduced quota refugees.

Marcus Knuth, immigration spokesperson with Venstre, told Politiken that Denmark could resume taking in quota refugees in future.

“But we need to look further ahead. We have big integration problems with the large number that came in 2015,” he said.

The Social Democrats also dismissed immediate recommencement of quota refugee arrivals.

“We are not against taking in quota refugees. On the contrary, all refugees should come to Denmark via that system,” MP Dan Jørgensen told Politiken, adding, “We would prefer the EU to control its outer borders, so we can stop the terrible trafficking by people smugglers over the Mediterranean. Then we would be about to take in a number from the UN system."

French police clash with migrants in Calais
3 September
[TheLocal.fr] Police fired tear gas and three officers were injured on Saturday in clashes with migrants near the French port of Calais who took advantage of a traffic jam to sneak onto trucks, authorities said.

"Our British colleagues had opened only nine out of 14 lanes this weekend though we expected 9,000 vehicles in the Eurotunnel and 7,500 at the port," local deputy police chief Jean-Philippe Vennin told AFP.

He said the lane shortages considerably slowed down traffic on the main A16 motorway and at about 4:30pm, around 50 migrants "took advantage of the bottleneck to board a few trucks".

An AFP correspondent on the scene said there were about 60 migrants waiting near the motorway. Police engaged "in a game of cat and mouse" and used tear gas to disperse the migrants, said Vennin. Migrants who successfully climbed onto a truck were then chased away by the driver after being alerted by nearby motorists, the source added.

Syrian army fights to secure corridor into Deir Al-Zor

BEIRUT: The Syrian army and its allies are fighting to secure a corridor to troops in Deir Al-Zor, a day after they smashed through Daesh lines to break the jihadist siege.

The army reached Deir Al-Zor city on Tuesday in a days-long thrust that followed months of steady advances east across the desert, breaking a siege that had lasted three years.

Daesh counter-attacks lasted through the day, trying to repel the army, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Fierce battles raged around the city, as troops sought to expand the route and allow aid in, the British-based war monitor added.

“Work is progressing to secure the route and widen the flanks so as not to be cut or targeted by (Daesh),” said a commander in the military alliance backing Syrian President Bashar Assad.

“The next step is to liberate the city,” the non-Syrian commander said.
It points to a tough battle ahead as the army aims to move from breaching the siege to driving Daesh militants from their half of the city, the sort of street-by-street warfare in which they excel.

Syrian state news agency SANA said the army had made gains expanding its control near the corridor after heavy artillery and air strikes.

Assad and his allies — Russia, Iran and Shiite militias including Hezbollah — will follow the relief of Deir Al-Zor with an offensive along the Euphrates valley, the commander said.

The Euphrates valley cuts a lush, populous swathe of green about 260 km (160 miles) long and 10 km (6 miles) wide through the Syrian desert from Raqqa to the Iraqi border at Al-Bukamal.

The area has been an Islamic State stronghold in Syria but came under attack this year when a US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias besieged and assaulted Raqqa.

Rapidly losing territory in Syria and Iraq, Daesh is falling back on the Euphrates towns downstream of Deir Al-Zor, including Al-Mayadin and Al-Bukamal, where many expect it to make a last stand.

Still, the jihadist group specializes in urban combat, using car bombs, mines, tunnels and drones, and has held out against full-scale attack for months in some towns and cities.

Daesh has 6,000-8,000 fighters left in Syria, despite losing most of its territory across both Iraq and Syria since September 2014, the United States-led coalition said.

Food convoys
Parallel with their thrust toward Deir Al-Zor, the Syrian military and its allies have been fighting Daesh in its last pocket of ground in central Syria, near the town of Al-Salamiya on the Homs-Aleppo highway.

On Wednesday, army advances gained control of four villages there, further tightening the pocket, a military media unit run by Lebanon’s Hezbollah said.

In Raqqa, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces alliance says it has taken about 65 percent of Daesh’s former self-declared Syrian capital.

Deir Al-Zor lies along the southwest bank of the Euphrates. The government enclave includes the northern half of the city and the Brigade 137 military base to the west.

The army also holds an air base and nearby streets, separated from the rest of the enclave by hundreds of meters of Daesh-held ground and still cut off from the advancing army.

Government forces will push toward the besieged air base, the pro-Assad commander said.

Instead of breaking the siege along the main road from Palmyra, stretches of which remain in Daesh hands, the army reached the Brigade 137 along a narrow salient from the northwest.

The corridor from the west into Brigade 137 was only about 500 meters wide, the commander said.

The United Nations has estimated that 93,000 civilians were living under Daesh siege in Deir Al-Zor in “extremely difficult” conditions, with some high-altitude air drops supplying them.

Deir Al-Zor’s provincial governor told state-run television that convoys loaded with food and medicine were on the way, along with ambulances and a mobile clinic. Residents in the enclave had gone years without vegetables, fuel, and other necessities, Mohammed Ibrahim Samra said.

“Despite all this, the schools kept running,” he said. “Our people in Deir Al-Zor have suffered a lot ... and they still held on to their land.”

More from al-Manar
The Syrian Arab Army units expanded their control around Regiment 137 in the southwestern side of Deir Ezzor and inflicted heavy losses on ISIL terrorists, at a time when fierce infighting erupted between the terror organization’s mercenaries due to the state of collapse it is suffering under the continuous victories of the Syrian army.

SANA reporter in Deir Ezzor said the army units operating in the southwestern countryside of Deir Ezzor are working to expand their control in the vicinity of the Regiment 137 after breaking the siege imposed on the city yesterday for more than 3 years.

The reporter pointed out that the Air Force has directed intensive strikes on the hideouts and fortified points of ISIL in the areas of al-Malha, al-Thardah and near al-Taim oil field and the villages of Shula and Ayyash and Bugheiliyeh, which resulted in the destruction of some of the targets and the elimination of many terrorists.

The Syrian Arab Army units controlled on Tuesday a number of strategic hills around the town of Kabajib, 50 km southwest of Deir Ezzor.

Meanwhile, local sources from the western countryside of Deir Ezzor reported that some ISIL terrorists were killed and injured as infighting erupted between Iraqi mercenaries and others of the French nationality in the town of Granij.

Spain and Morocco break up 'jihadist cell' preparing 'large-scale' attack
[TheLocal.es] Spanish and Moroccan authorities have jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
six jihadists who were preparing "large-scale attacks", Spain's interior ministry said Wednesday.

Spanish police and security authorities in Morocco "have dismantled a jihadist terrorist cell composed of six people", a ministry statement said, indicating that five of them were arrested in Morocco and one in Melilla, a Spanish enclave in North Africa.

The arrests came nearly three weeks after a group of jihadists, many of them of Moroccan origin, killed 16 people in two deadly attacks using vehicles and knives in Barcelona and another seaside resort in northeastern Spain.

"An investigation by the Moroccan security services found evidence that this group was planning large-scale terror attacks, holding discreet nighttime meetings during which they carried out physical training and simulated murder by decapitation," the ministry said.

A similar statement issued by the Moroccan interior ministry and quoted by MAP news agency, referred to group members "training how to slit throats with knives."

The agency said the cell became active in Beni Chiker, a town in the northeastern province of Nador, with its members "planning to carry out a range of execution operations in Morocco and Spain."

Five of the suspects are Moroccan nationals, one of whom had residency in Spain, while the sixth was a Spanish national of Moroccan origin, it said.

Police in Spain said the leader of the cell was a 39-year-old Spaniard of Moroccan origin living in Melilla. He was arrested by the security forces while visiting Morocco.

"He used his position as an assistant teacher in a centre for reeducating minors to carry out recruitment activities and to radicalise young people in a vulnerable situation," the interior ministry said.

It said such activity was "in line with the global strategy" of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group.

Since mid-2015, Spain has arrested 199 people accused of links to extremism, the ministry said.

The Grand Turk
Erdoğan compares CHP to terror organizations, main opposition reacts
[Hurriyet Daily News] President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
has accused the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) of carrying out an aggressive stance against the ruling government, likening it to behavior "in line with terrorist aims," with CHP spokesperson Bulent Tezcan reacting by saying the president’s discourse is polarizing.

"The main opposition party acts with the understanding of seizing the administration, the ruling Justice and Development Party [AKP] and myself, at the expense of the loss of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, instead of coming to power by winning the hearts and minds of the nation with their efforts and programs. Their language is not the normal language of an opposition party, it is almost the language of a terrorist organization," Erdogan said on Sept. 6, speaking to the AKP’s provincial heads.

"Whatever they [terrorist organizations] do, they [the CHP] does the same," Erdogan added.

"We will not hand our country over at the mercy of an understanding, which gives the impression they are in line with a terrorist organization and Turkey’s enemies with every step they take, every word they say and every policy they implement," he said.

The CHP’s spokesperson Tezcan reacted to Erdogan’s claims, arguing Erdogan excessively uses a discourse over "terror" to polarize society.

"Everyone knows the discourse of AKP leader Erdogan’s language. I don’t need to define it. We say ’justice,’ he says ’terror.’ Our nation can tell the difference," Tezcan said, after his party’s Central Executive Board meeting on Sept. 6.

"Our nation knows our language contains nothing but justice, peace, democracy, brotherhood and reconciliation. We will continue to use this language," he said.

"If you look at who is using the word ’terror’ most frequently, who is using ’conflict’ and ’polarization’ in politics, then the person who divides this society will be revealed," he added.

Nominee’s Religious Faith Dominates Senate Judicial Confirmation Hearing
[DAILYCALLER] “Stunningly, Barrett has asserted that judges should not follow the law or the Constitution when it conflicts with their personal religious beliefs,” AFJ claims. Legal academics have strongly disputed this characterization of her position.

Feinstein signaled sympathy with those concerns, and referenced a law review article that Barrett wrote in 1998 entitled “Catholic Judges in Capital Cases,” which appeared in the Marquette Law Review. Barrett concluded that a Catholic trial judge who is a conscientious objector to the death penalty should recuse himself if asked to enter an order of execution against a convict. She emphasized that the set of circumstances considered in the article were narrow, and that she participated in death penalty cases as a law clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court.

“When you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the ranking Democrat on the panel, of Barrett’s writings regarding the professional obligations of Catholic practitioners.

Europe
Top EU court rules eastern states must take refugees
[Hurriyet Daily News] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's highest court ruled on Sept. 6 that the European Union states must take in a share of refugees who reach Europe, dismissing complaints by Slovakia and Hungary and reigniting an angry row between east and west.

The government of Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Victor Orban was characteristically blunt about the European Court of Justice, calling its decision to uphold an EU policy drafted in the heat of the 2015 migrant crisis as "appalling" and denouncing a political "rape of European law and values."

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
Germany, which took in the bulk of over a million people who landed in Greece two years ago, said it expected the formerly communist states, including Poland, which supported the complaint, to now fall in line and accept the ruling that the Union is entitled to impose quotas of asylum-seekers on states.

The Luxembourg-based ECJ rejected the Hungarian and Slovak claims that it was illegal for Brussels to order them to take in hundreds of mainly Moslem refugees from Syria, which they said threatened the security and stability of their societies.

"The mechanism actually contributes to enabling Greece and Italia to deal with the impact of the 2015 migration crisis and is proportionate," the court said in statement.

Syria gov’t behind sarin gas attack in April: UN probe
[Hurriyet Daily News] United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
war crimes Sherlocks on Sept. 6 said they had evidence that Syrian government forces were behind a chemical attack that killed dozens of people in Khan Sheikhun in April.

In the first U.N. report to officially blame Damascus, the U.N. Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Syria said it had gathered an "extensive body of information" showing the Syrian airforce was behind the horrific sarin gas attack on April 4.

"All evidence available leads the Commission to conclude that there are reasonable grounds to believe Syrian forces dropped an aerial bomb dispersing sarin in Khan Sheikhun," the report said.

At least 83 people, a third of them children, were killed and nearly 300 maimed in the attack on Khan Sheikhun, a town in the opposition-held northern province of Idlib, it said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based monitor, has previously given a corpse count of at least 87.

Syria's government has denied involvement and claims it no longer possesses chemical weapons after a 2013 agreement under which it pledged to surrender its chemical arsenal.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on Monday reiterated guidelines that "everyone older than six months" should receive vaccinations after Australia witnessed a severe flu season.
