Roger Stone defends himself to congressional Russia investigators, has 'frank exchange'
(CNN) President Donald Trump's longtime confidante Roger Stone accused lawmakers of making "falsehoods, misstatements, and misimpressions" with allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials during his appearance before a congressional panel on Tuesday.

Stone, a one-time adviser to Trump, issued a combative opening statement Monday evening ahead of his highly anticipated appearance before the House intelligence committee Tuesday morning in a closed session.

Following his meeting, Stone said he had a "frank exchange" and described the preceding as "an entirely political exercise."

Stone said he denied any Russian collusion or knowledge of the hacking of John Podesta's email during the roughly three-hour closed-door session.

In his testimony, Stone attacked the very lawmakers questioning him, calling out the statements of three Democrats on the panel, including ranking member Adam Schiff of California.

"Multiple members of this committee have made false allegations against me in public session in order to ensure that these bogus charges received maximum media coverage," Stone said in his statement. "Now, however, you deny me the opportunity to respond to these charges in the same open forum. This is cowardice."

A college basketball bribery scandal leads to arrests of 10 people ‐ including an Adidas executive
[Business Insider] The FBI arrested 10 people on charges of fraud and corruption in men's college basketball on Tuesday.

The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that assistant coaches at Arizona, Auburn, USC, and Oklahoma State had been arrested along with managers, financial advisers, and representatives of the international sportswear company Adidas.

Jim Gatto, the director of global sports marketing for basketball at Adidas, was among the defendants. Gatto is accused of conspiring with coaches to pay high-school athletes to play at universities sponsored by Adidas (referred to as "Company 1" in the case).

The investigation, which had been in progress since 2015, was led by the FBI and the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. Three separate complaints have been filed.

Gatto and four other defendants have been charged with "making and concealing bribe payments" to high-school student athletes and/or their families.

Air Force Rationale For Killing J-Stars Radar Plane Replacement Isn't Credible
[Forbes] The people who brought you "military transformation" 20 years ago have a new idea. It's called "multi-domain battle." It isn't a bad idea, but it isn't really new either -- it repackages some common-sense warfighting concepts for an era in which conflicts will be waged more on the electromagnetic spectrum and in cyberspace. So the armed forces need to synchronize their operations with the aim of achieving superiority across all the "domains" of warfare -- not just in the air, on land and at sea, but in space, on the EM spectrum, and in the cyber realm.

If this seems kind of obvious to you, then you haven't read the white papers circulating around the Pentagon. They make multi-domain battle sound like an intellectual breakthrough -- the same way military transformation supposedly was in the 1990s, or "airland battle" in the 1970s. In reality, multi-domain battle is just the latest plea for inter-service cooperation in fighting wars. The only thing that really changes over time with these various warfighting visions is the technology -- but the visions tend to be way out ahead of what is technologically do-able.

Which brings me to the Air Force's recently disclosed move to cancel replacement of one of its most unique warfighting assets. It's a radar plane called the Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System (J-Stars) that can track moving ground targets over a 20,000 square mile area, focusing in on items of particular interest and using its sensor to take pictures through clouds, dust or the dead of night that can be quickly shared with friendly forces. The information can reveal where enemy combat vehicles are, which direction they are headed, and at what speed.

It's an invaluable tool for U.S. Army commanders; the Marines have their own version of the same kind of radar on the Navy's new Poseidon maritime patrol plane (the radar can track ships too). But sometime later this week, the Air Force is likely to put out a position paper explaining why it doesn't want to buy a new manned aircraft that can replace the 16 aged J-Stars in the current fleet. It will claim manned radar planes can't survive in a world of multi-domain battles and near-peer adversaries equipped with the latest weapons.

British Labour Party Faction wants to expell Jews from Party
[GuidoFawkes] A fringe event at Labour conference has heard calls to expel Jewish activists from the party, while a speaker compared Israel to Nazis and the audience was banned from tweeting in an attempt to silence "hostile" coverage. The room echoed its agreement as a speaker protested that the Jewish Labour Movement was given a campaigning awarded yesterday, instead calling for the group and Labour Friends of Israel to be "kicked out" of the party. A speaker, Miko Peled, said Israel and Israelis should not be treated differently to white South Africans during Apartheid or Nazis. He claimed Israel was committing "genocide" in Gaza. He said those present should stop calling Israel by its name, a view taken up by other speakers who then referred to it only as "the Zionist state". The notorious Tony Greenstein, who was suspended by Labour for ranting about "Zionist scum" was applauded, and there were cheers for Ken Livingstone...
there are some in the US Democratic Party who have the same or slightly more nuanced idea
Too many of the rest think the same, but are not ready to give up all those lovely donations, organizing skills, and fat Rolodexes full of contacts.

Judge Roy Moore Displays Firearm During Rally in Support of Second Amendment
BLUF:
[Breitbart] He referenced ads that "were completely false," like the one that claimed he does not "believe in the Second Amendment." He then reached into his pocket, pulled out a concealed carry handgun, held it up high and said, "I believe in the Second Amendment." The crowd went wild.

Moore added, "You know, they say that guns are bad; that they kill people. Well I know a lot about guns‐I’m the one that used guns in combat. I know what guns do...[But] guns don’t kill, people kill. [You could say] cars kill, are we going to get rid of our cars? Are we going to get rid of our knives? No. We’ve got to bring morality back to our country."

The applause of the crowd hit a crescendo as Moore added, "We’ve got to uphold the Second Amendment."

A voice calling out in the wilderness
h/t Instapundit
...My argument about political correctness is not tendentious or partisan ‐ it's analytical. The core of the argument is that when groups care a lot about maintaining conformity of belief on some matter of critical interest to them, then the hunt for heretics is always ongoing. We're always looking for deviants. The willingness to speak in certain ways can be a sign of deviance, because if speakers know that punishment awaits them for speaking in particular ways, the only speakers willing to take the risks are indeed people who are not reliable on whatever the core belief or value is.

...Take affirmative action. We're not supposed to notice that Asians are being turned away in droves from the elite universities. We're not supposed to notice that blacks are included on the basis of some silly argument about diversity. At Brown, we call them "historically underrepresented groups," as if observing the historical underrepresentation constitutes in and of itself an indictment of the institution and not of the groups themselves.

We're 50 years past the civil rights movement and blacks, to get to Harvard or Princeton or Brown, still depend upon being judged by different standards than other people. And people are called "bigots" if they ask questions about this? This is trivial, and it's not engaging real arguments.

...My problem with the use of the term "structural racism" is not with the observation that there are struggles that are deeply embedded within the American political economy that have implications for racial inequality. My problem is with the claim that such structural differences are indicted as racist simply because there are racial disparities.

Laws are structurally racist in that respect. Is it structurally racist if I end up with more black people in prison because there are more black robbers? Is that structural racism? It's structure, to be sure, but whether it's racism is an argument that remains to be made.

...I think, ultimately, that we have to get out of the blame game and start getting practical about what interventions will change the facts on the ground. We can talk about housing policy. We can talk about education policy. We can talk about what kind of social safety nets we want in this country. There are big arguments to be had about those things. If we get concrete and specific about the interventions that we're going to get behind that would remedy some of these problems, that seems to me a productive conversation.

...So [Ta-Nehisi] Coates's historical account is a lie. It tells only one part of the story. It erases the responsibility that African Americans have for our own condition. I refuse to accept that we don’t have responsibility for our condition. I refuse to accept that we're not free-acting agents able to determine our own future.

Ironically, he imputes more agency and more capacity for judgments to white people in his argumentation than he does to black people. Black people are merely puppets at the end of the string that whites are pulling in his narrative.
Confused by the racist Algebra

#1  Glenn Loury gores many oxes of the left.

I'm referring to the welfare state here. I've often thought that by not working and having the State provide one with many of life's needs (and a few wants) leads to both a resentment towards the State as well as an even greater sense of entitlement. Such resentments and growing senses of entitlement will never be satisfied and because they will not, it often leads to crime and violence.

There are those who fan these flames of resentment and dissent for political gain--that is for votes and power. The result is that we all lose; we end up with a nation of pissed-off tribes at odds with each other. We end up with a Balkanization rather than a "United" States. I am still amazed at the selfishness of those who promote these divisions for their own gains.

A quote that exemplifies the marriage between the Welfare State and the political power of the State is often attributed to LBJ:

Lyndon Baines Johnson 1963... "These Negroes, they're getting pretty uppity these days and that's a problem for us since they've got something now they never had before, the political pull to back up their uppityness. Now we've got to do something about this, we've got to give them a little something, just enough to quiet them down, not enough to make a difference... I'll have them n*****s voting Democratic for the next two hundred years".

Barbra Streisand writes SF & Sarah Hoyt gives her a professional review
h/t Instapundit
Look, we live in strange times. It seems that every time I turn around I hear of another science fiction magazine being in trouble, and yet, wouldn’t you know it, the Puffington Host has decided to publish some and picked Barbra Streisand to write it.

It’s not very good, of course. No one really expects this "celebrity written fiction" to be wonderful. Normally the done thing is to pair the "name in another field" and an experienced writer, like what is happening with Clinton and Patterson. But Barbra has decided to go it on her one and the result.... Well, it’s funny. We just don’t think it’s entirely intentionally funny. Also, we won’t lie: some of the funny had us crying a little, because, well... you know...

Props for her beginning, which establishes clearly that we are in a parallel world with the following:

May our country learn a lesson from this tragic mistake of 2016.

I don't know why some people do this instead of something useful. If you start considering all the diverse victimhood groups and stringing them together as above, what has one achieved? Nada. The sun will burn out before you accomplish anything.

Hurricane Maria Has Transformed Puerto Rico Into A 'Cash Only' Economy

[Zero Hedge] Electricity, internet access and cell phone service have been offline in parts of Puerto Rico for a whole week. And with the island still struggling to rescue people stranded in remote villages, those managing the emergency recovery effort have yet to focus their attentions on the monumental task that looms ahead: Rebuilding the island’s devastated infrastructure, from communications to sewers and water treatment plants that have been damaged by flash flooding and 155 mph winds that Hurricane Maria visited upon the island.

#7  A damn good argument against large infrastructure.

It's too expensive now but imagine this... Nice solid solar cell collectors like the Tesla Solar tiles and a power wall instead of power lines.

Well a storm like that comes through. Some people would loose roofs and power. Some would not. So the whole island would not be without power. It would limp but it would be functional.

Now the same for other infrastructure. Large low earth sat nets like the ones close to implementation. Thousands of sats are not taken down by a hurricane. If the flat phased array antenna on your roof or car survives to provide WiFi (typical way they will be used as wifi routers) Then enabling wifi on your cellphone and will enable you to communicate near your home. Downed phone lines and cell towers will not matter. If the wifi operates with carrier enable (like say Xfinitiy) then you could have mobility with your wifi cell all over the disaster area.

Perhaps the hardest would be sewer and water in built up regions.

Three Israelis murdered in terror attack outside Jerusalem
Three Israelis were murdered Tuesday morning in a suspected terror attack in the town of Har Adar outside Jerusalem. Another Israeli was badly wounded.

According to the Border Police, the Palestinian assailant approached the town's gate posing as a laborer. When the people manning the gate grew suspicious of him, he pulled out his weapon and opened fire.

After an exchange of gunfire, the assailant was shot dead, but not before fatally injuring three people and severely wounding one more.

Israel's Channel 10 news identified the attacker as 37-year-old Namer Mahmoud Ahmed Jabbar, a father of four from the Palestinian village of Beit Surik. The man is said to have a valid work permit allowing him to enter Israel.

Rush mocks NFL national anthem protests: ‘There's no way Trump loses this'
[Wash Times] Radio host Rush Limbaugh ‐ also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan ‐ has a message for President Trump after a weekend of national-anthem protests in the NFL: owners are "scared to death."

Dozens of pro football players ‐ at least some in every game Sunday ‐ refused to stand during "The Star-Spangled Banner" in reaction to Mr. Trump’s recent statement that protesters should be fired.

Mr. Limbaugh told millions of listeners that conservatives should cheer because the decision by players to politicize the sport is backfiring.

"The left is attempting to publicly damage, take hold, whatever, of the NFL," Mr. Limbaughsaid. "And people who are not political ‐ and there are a lot of those in this country, more than you would think ‐ are seeing it. And they don’t like it, and now there’s a president speaking out against it. In public, it is Democrats who are now showing up to be the party supporting actions against the flag. The Democrats are being seen as the party that encourages protest against the anthem and the country itself. I’m telling you, sports media guys and gals, there’s no way Donald Trump loses this, the way you’ve got it going."

Mr. Limbaugh also acknowledged during the broadcast that Sunday’s protests prompted him to actively avoid a Steelers game for the first time in over four decades.

#9  Does the NFL Require Players to Stand for the National Anthem?

"...
The league’s Game Operations Department uses the manual to govern the conduct of home clubs, to ensure they protect players and provide the conditions for a fair and fan-friendly contest," reads the NFL's website. "Clubs face warnings and other penalties for noncompliance."

The NFL rulebook makes no mention of the national anthem. But the game operations manual does.

Here's what the game operations manual says regarding the national anthem, according to an NFL spokesperson:

The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.

During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking.

The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition.

It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.

It's important to note the use of the word "may" here. The NFL is not considering punishing fines on players or teams who choose to kneel or stay in the locker room during the national anthem, the spokesperson says."

#14  Like Procopius2k said.

I see the NFL, in aggregate, seeing the Brinks truck somewhat lighter on the tires, will come up with some kind of weak-kneed palliative to quiet the storm. Morlocks, PC's and idjits will buy into it, but those who have decided against feeding the beast will know better.

"How many teams can Canadian and European demographics handle?" may very well be a topic of discussion for the "New" NFL.

Virtue Signaling McCain gives '60 minutes' self-eulogy
[Breitbart] Sunday on CBS’s "60 Minutes," Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said he and President Donald Trump were very different people, explaining they had "different upbringing" and "different life experiences."

McCain said, "He is in the business of making money. And he has been successful both in television as well as Miss America and others. I was raised in a military family. I was raised in the concept and belief that duty, honor, country is the lodestar for the behavior that we have to exhibit every single day."

World War II vet goes viral for taking a knee in solidarity with NFL players
As controversy surrounding President Trump's comments on NFL players protesting during the National Anthem embroiled the country this weekend, one 97-year-old veteran spoke out.

The president on Friday said of professional football players taking a knee or showing a symbol of protest -- most in reaction to American police brutality -- during the singing of the National Anthem that he would "love" to see NFL owners "get that son of a b***h off the field." His comment sparked a wave of backlash, including statements from league commissioner Roger Goodell and team owners alike."Courageous Patriots have fought and died for our great American Flag --- we MUST honor and respect it! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Trump tweeted on Sunday, and one veteran is speaking out -- but not in agreement with the president.

"My grandpa is a 97 year-old WWII vet & Missouri farmer who wanted to join w/ those who #TakeaKnee: 'those kids have every right to protest,'" The tweet from grandson Brennan Gilmore reads. The veteran is John Middlemas of Willard, MO., and his original taking a knee post has since been retweeted some 123,000 times and liked 324,000 times.

"I wanted to communicate what I always told to my grand-kids and everybody else," Middlemas said to The Springfield News-Leader on Sunday. "When they'd go to bed at night, we'd tell the kids we wanted to be like Jesus."While Middlemas' action was bold, grandson Brennan says it is nothing new to the military man.

"My Grandpa has been an ally to the civil rights movement for many years," Gilmore said in a follow-up tweet on Sunday. "He's an amazing man always on the side of justice."

Director of Hollywood Bomb Blames Americans Rejecting ‘Science’ for Flop
[NEWSBUSTERS.ORG] The director of a film reviled by the American people highlighted rejecting science as an explanation for why the movie bombed. In an interview with The Frame on Thursday, Mother! Director Darren Aronofsky responded to the movie’s highly unusual F-grade Cinemascore this way: "... You have other people who basically believe in the power of a iPhone that they can communicate to 35 million people in a blink of an eye, yet they don't believe in science in other ways."

He continued, "It has as many people believe in it as believe in gravity. And it scares me and it's time to start screaming. So I wanted to howl. And this was my howl. And some people are not going to want to listen to it. That's cool."

The movie website Dark Horizons noted that the Jennifer Lawerence film "has earned the dubious honor of being one of only nineteen films in history to receive an F-grade CinemaScore ‐ a marker more of failed expectation than a bash of its quality."

Carlos Danger gets 21 Months
[NYPost] It's hard time for Anthony Weiner.

The disgraced ex-congressman was sentenced to 21 months in prison Monday for convincing a high school student to undress and touch herself via Skype in 2016.

Weiner, 53, had faced as much as 10 years in the slammer after pleading guilty in May to one count of transferring obscene material to a minor. The feds said Weiner, a former Congressman from Brooklyn, began a two-month sexting session with the North Carolina teen shortly after she messaged him on Twitter in January 2016.

He pleaded for probation on the grounds that his online dalliance with the 15-year-old was due to his sick obsession with sexting strangers rather than an obsession with underage girls. The government had asked for two years in prison.

It’s just the latest chapter in Democratic politician’s very public downfall, which started in 2011 when he was forced to resign from Congress following his first sexting scandal.

His 2013 run for NYC mayor also went up in flames when it emerged that he was still sexting under the alias "Carlos Danger."

The feds said the latest and most insidious chapter of Weiner’s sexting problem began on the evening of Jan. 23, 2016, when a high-school student messaged him on Twitter, prompting a flurry of "provocative" responses from the former public servant, who knew the teen was in high school, court papers show.

"As January turned to February, their intermittent exchanges grew more lascivious," Manhattan federal prosecutors told the judge in court filings.

By the end of February, Weiner ‐ who by this time knew the girl was only 15 ‐ was video-chatting with her via Skype and using "graphics and obscene language" to ask her to "display her naked body and touch herself, the feds said.

He also sent her "obscene material" on self-destructing messaging apps like Kik and Confide, including adult porn and a message "describing what he would do to her, if she were 18," according to court filings.

In September 2016, the girl sold her story to British publication Daily Mail, and in May he cried as he pleaded guilty to one count of sending obscene material to a minor.

His wife ‐ Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin ‐ finally filed for divorce on the same day he pleaded guilty.

Iran nuclear crisis: France orders Tehran to stop missile tests
FRANCE has ordered Iran to stop testing missiles after Tehran announced on Saturday it had successfully launched a new ballistic missile with a range of 2,000km despite being told by the US to stop all nuclear-related activities.

France said it was extremely "concerned" by Iran’s ballistic missile test and urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to launch an investigation into the controversial launch.

French foreign ministry spokeswoman Agnès Romatet-Espagne said in a statement: "France asks Iran to cease all destabilising activity in the region.

"France has asked Mr Guterres to carry out a full report on the launch .... and will consider with its partners, notably European, the means to obtain from Iran the cessation of its destabilising ballistic activities."

Mrs Romatet-Espagne added Iran was in "clear violation" of UN resolution 2231 and urged Iran to "respect" the terms laid out in the 2015 nuclear deal.

province of Afghanistan.

The Office of the Former President in a statement said a former intelligence staff and Nangarhar customs department worker are also among those killed.

Karzai accused the American forces for the killing of the three people in Jalalabad city, the historic provincial capital of Nangarhar.

"The former Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Karzai expressed his deep grief regarding the killing of three people, including the ex-presidential security staff, intelligence staff, and Nangarhar customs department staff," the statement says.

It also added that the former President calls on the government of Afghanistan to take immediate actions to prevent the violations of the foreign forces.

The government and security officials have not commented regarding the report and Karzai’s statement so far.

But the provincial government earlier in a statement said at least three Talibs including one of their local leaders were killed in a special forces raid in this province.

The statement further added that the raid was conducted by the Afghan special forces in Bati Kot district and at least nine suspects were also taken to custody during the operation.

NBC guest calls National Anthem 'white supremacist'
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] This week's Mainstream Media Scream features the Trump-inspired debate over the National Anthem and NFL players taking a knee to protest it.

It came Sunday on Meet the Press during an exchange over President Trump's comments between National Review editor Rich Lowry and Detroit Free Press editorial page editor Stephen Henderson:

Rich Lowry of National Review: "He's not randomly attacking these players. He is attacking them because they're kneeling during the national anthem. And the national anthem is not a white supremacist symbol. And the President has become-"

Stephen Henderson, Detroit Free Press: "Some of the words of the national anthem are white supremacist."

Lowry: "You think the national anthem is racist?"

Henderson: "I think this is a country whose history is racist, whose history is steeped in white supremacy, and the anthem reflects that in its very words, in verses we don't sing anymore."

Media Research Center Vice President of Research Brent Baker explains our weekly pick: "Henderson well reflects the racial obsession of those given such prominence in the media, who see the bad in America before the good, and see everything through a racial prism. They have disdain for the millions, for whom Trump speaks, who are angry millionaire players would disrespect the national anthem of a nation which has provided such opportunities."

Facebook Russia Ads Derail Collusion Narrative
Zero Hedge

That was quick.

Less than a week after Facebook agreed to turn over to Congressional investigators copies of the 3,000-odd political advertisements that the company said it had inadvertently sold to a Russia-linked group intent on meddling in the 2016 presidential election, the contents of the ads have – unsurprisingly – leaked, just as we had expected them to.

Congressional investigators shared the information with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, which has repeatedly allowed information about its investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign actively colluded with Russian operatives to leak to the press. Once this happened, we knew it was only a matter of time before the ads became part of the public record.

And, shockingly, descriptions of the ads provided to the Washington Post hardly fit the narrative that Democratic lawmakers have spun in recent weeks, claiming the ads – which didn’t advocate on behalf of a specific candidate, but rather hewed to political issues like abortion rights – were instrumental in securing Trump’s victory.

After initially denying the story this spring, Facebook came clean earlier this month, saying its investigators had discovered that the company sold at least $100,000 worth of ads – and possibly as much as $150,000 – to Russia-linked group that bought the ads through 470 phony Facebook pages and accounts.

WaPo reports that the ads represented issues on both sides of the ideological spectrum, which would suggest that the buyers didn’t intend to support a specific candidate, but rather their own unique agenda.

And from Anomalous Sources:

Russian operatives used Facebook ads to exploit America's racial and religious divisions

[WashingtonPost] The batch of more than 3,000 Russian-bought ads that Facebook is preparing to turn over to Congress shows a deep understanding of social divides in American society, with some ads promoting African American rights groups, including Black Lives Matter, and others suggesting that these same groups pose a rising political threat, say people familiar with the covert influence campaign.

The Russian campaign ‐ taking advantage of Facebook’s ability to send contrary messages to different groups of users based on their political and demographic characteristics ‐ also sought to sow discord among religious groups. Other ads highlighted support for Democrat Hillary Clinton among Muslim women.

These targeted messages, along with others that have surfaced in recent days, highlight the sophistication of an influence campaign slickly crafted to mimic and infiltrate U.S. political discourse while also seeking to heighten tensions between groups already wary of one another.
Sooooo, it appears the magic Facebook bullet the Libs were so pining for turns out to be the Ruskies sowing chaos instead of simply being tools for Mr. Trump.

Iraqi forces mass for new operation in Anbar

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi forces are clearing the road to a second Islamic State haven in western Anbar preparing for a military offensive to recapture it, a local official was quoted saying.

Rageh al-Eissawi, a member of Anbar province council’s security commission, said in a statement that security forces launched wide-scale combing operations at roads leading to the town of Rawa preparing for an invasion against Islamic State militants.

He said the operations coincided with intensive air raids on the area by Iraqi warplanes.

Bomb squads are also clearing roadside bombs planted by the militants at those areas, Eissawi added.

Iraqi army forces on Thursday completely took over the town of Annah, just two days after operations launched to free western Anbar from IS.

ISIS holds 65K civilians in Anbar
That's a lotta recruits

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants are holding 65000 civilians inside their last two remaining havens in western Anbar, a human rights monitor said as military operations managed to reclaim a third bastion.

Those are trapped inside the cities of al-Qaim and Rawa, and are prevented from leaving by mobile militant patrols, according to the Iraqi Observatory for Human Rights. It predicted thousands of civilians to flee to Baghdad and security-held areas in Anbar, voicing fears that the militants were possibly going to use the civilians as hina shields.

In the name of honour
[DAWN] IN recent days, following a tip from a discreet informant, two bodies were exhumed from a graveyard in Sherpao Colony, Karachi. A post-mortem examination conducted thereafter revealed that the two individuals had been subjected to intense torture in their final hours: they had been beaten, tied to a charpai and electrocuted until they died, and then promptly buried under the cover of the night.

The bodies, it later transpired, belonged to two star-crossed lovers, both of them teenagers. As the police investigated further, it ended up unthreading the grisly details of a macabre tragedy. The young couple, it appears, had planned to elope, but before they could do so, their families found out. Initially, they decided to settle the matter amongst themselves, but a local jirga intervened, dismissed the settlement and ordered that the couple be killed instead. The parents dutifully obeyed. And all honour lost, was apparently regained.

If this sounds all too familiar, it is. This tragedy is as modern as it is ancient, as old as it is new. It is a story that we have heard countless times before, only rephrased, restructured and reordered: characters come and go, but the plot remains unchanged.

"Suspicious movements?" Heh heh. Good one.
The man was carrying 904.77g of gold worth 4.5m rupees (£22,000), but was freed after a payment of 100,000 rupees, he said. Such methods of smuggling were not unusual, he said.

"The gold was wrapped in plastic bags inserted in to his rectum," Jayarathne said, adding that there were four bags.

"This is not the first such detection and this is a common method of smuggling."

N.Korean top official arrives in Russia
A top North Korean official in charge of US affairs has arrived in Russia for diplomatic talks.

Choe Son Hui, director-general of the foreign ministry's North American affairs bureau, landed at an airport in Vladivostok, in Russia's Far East, on Monday.

Her itinerary and the purpose of the trip have not been announced. But diplomatic sources say she is expected to meet a Russian senior official to discuss the situation in the Korean Peninsula.

Choe exchanged views on the issue with the Russian ambassador in Pyongyang last Monday. North Korea's state-run media also reported last week that the ambassador and embassy officials visited Mount Paektu, which is regarded as sacred in the North.

The Russian government is critical of North Korea's nuclear and missile development, but also insists that dialogue is important in solving the issue.

North Korea is apparently trying to approach Russia as the administration of US President Donald Trump is ratcheting up pressure on the North.

Three passengers removed from Egyptair plane in Paris after bomb alert
There have been several such false alarms in recent days. Fun with kaffirs, or someone testing the system?
[AlAhram] French authorities have removed three passengers from an EgyptAir plane in Paris prior to its departure for Cairo, following claims that one of the passengers was overheard talking on the phone about a bomb on board, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported on Monday.

An official source at EgyptAir said that flight MS800 arrived safely at Cairo International Airport early on Monday morning, having been delayed by seven-and-a-half hours due to the incident.

Prior to takeoff from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, two passengers reported to the captain that they had overheard another passenger mention a bomb while speaking on the phone.

The captain informed French authorities who took the plane to the cargo area for an inspection of the luggage.

The three passengers involved were taken into custody and the aircraft was finally allowed to depart after a delay of several hours.

The Airbus A330-300 was scheduled to depart from at 4 pm on Sunday afternoon, but its departure was delayed until 11:30 pm, arriving in Cairo at 3:40 am on Monday.

French authorities have not provided a detailed account of the incident.

Iraqi militia drives back ISIS attack in Hamdaniya
Hamdaniyah (IraqiNews.com) The pro-government paramilitary troops have foiled an attack by Islamic State militants on the borders between Iraq and Syria.

A statement by the media service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said on Monday that “the first brigade troops repulsed a wide-scale attack by IS militants on the Iraqi-Syrian borders in al-Muthalath region, which links the borders to Hamdaniya.”

“Militants who were on board of a vehicle were killed,” it added.

The Shia-led PMFs were formed in 2014 as per an edict by Iraq’s top Shia clergy to combat the militant group.

IS has increasingly targeted security forces and civilians across Iraq over the past months coinciding with operations by the U.S.-backed Iraqi government forces which sought to retake areas occupied by the group since 2014.

Launched last week, an operation managed to take over al-Zab river region, the northern part of Makhoul mountains and several villages west of Tigris River. Joint Operations Command announced on Sunday completing the first phase of operations to recapture Hawija, the group’s holdout in southwestern Kirkuk.

The government hopes to eradicate a self-styled “Islamic Caliphate” IS declared from Mosul after it had taken over large areas of the country and of neighboring Syria.

Sabratha residents flee fighting
Tripoli, 25 September 2017:

Sabratha hospital has issued an urgent call for trauma kits and blood as the fighting in the town continued for a tenth day, with at least 17 dead and 48 wounded since the violence began.

So pressed is the hospital that casualties are being sent elsewhere. A woman hit by shrapnel today in her kitchen was transferred to Zuwara for treatment

Thus far all mediation attempts by local elders have failed, with two uneasy truces quickly breaking down. The Libya Red Crescent has reportedly evacuated almost all the population from the old part of two where the fighting has become fiercest.

There are international concerns for the safety of the outstanding ruins of Sabratha’s ancient city. Pictures last week showed a shell hole in the monumental masonry of the theatre. Today UNESCO called for a ceasefire and appealed for this precious part of Libya’s archaeolgical heritage to be protected.

However a halt to the fighting has been rejected by the Anti-ISIS Operations Room (AIOR) which says it is battling jihadists in the form of the Amu Brigade, also known as the Brigade of the Martyr Anas Al-Dabashi. This militia is effectively the same as the 48th Battalion, which the Presidency Council’ has said is part of its armed forces.

A normally reliable social media source said today that three migrant detention camps under the control of the Amu Brigade could not be reached. The source also said that while rivals fought in Sabratha, people-smugglers in Zuwara had stepped up their operations.

Suspected Al Shabaab Gunmen Carry Out Separate Killings In Somalia
[RADIOSHABELLE] A senior Somali military officer was bumped off in Mogadishu Sunday evening, security sources told the media.

Gunmen armed with pistols fatally shot General Abdullahi Mohammed Sheikh Qururuh and a bodyguard as the two men were walking home from a mosque in the Somali capital, witnesses said.

The attackers walked past General Qururuh and the bodyguard, then turned and shot them from behind, the sources quoted the witnesses as saying.

Both victims was struck down in his prime.

Qururuh was a senior army officer at Somalia’s command and control headquarters in Mogadishu. He served previously as deputy commander of logistics for the Somali army.

The attackers in that case were in a vehicle that fired on Mohamud Moallim Hassan Qoley and his bodyguard in the capital’s Dharkaynlay district. al-Shabaab grabbed credit for those killings.

How Did Marriage Become a Mark of Privilege?
[NYTIMES] Marriage, which used to be the default way to form a family in the United States, regardless of income or education, has become yet another part of American life reserved for those who are most privileged.
Because a marriage license is really, really expensive.
Fewer Americans are marrying over all, and whether they do so is more tied to socioeconomic status than ever before. In recent years, marriage has sharply declined among people without college degrees, while staying steady among college graduates with higher incomes.

Currently, 26 percent of poor adults, 39 percent of working-class adults and 56 percent of middle- and upper-class adults ages 18 to 55 are married, according to a research brief published today from two think tanks, the American Enterprise Institute and Opportunity America.

In 1990, more than half of adults were married, with much less difference based on class and education: 51 percent of poor adults, 57 percent of working-class adults and 65 percent of middle- and upper-class adults were married.

A big reason for the decline: Unemployed men are less likely to be seen as marriage material.
But they're good material for shacking, having children, buying cars, and taking out mortgages on houses.
“Women don’t want to take a risk on somebody who’s not going to be able to provide anything,” said Sharon Sassler, a sociologist at Cornell who published “Cohabitation Nation: Gender, Class, and the Remaking of Relationships” with Amanda Jayne Miller last month.

Erdogan accuses Myanmar of 'Buddhist terror' against Rohingya

on Monday accused the security forces in Myanmar of waging a "Buddhist terror" against the Rohingya Moslem minority in the country, hundreds of thousands of whom have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh.

Erdogan, who has repeatedly highlighted the plight of the Rohingya, again accused the Yangon government of carrying out a "genocide" against the people in Rakhine state.

In a speech in Istanbul, Erdogan lamented the failure of the international community to lay sanctions against the Myanmar government over its campaign.

"There is a very clear genocide over there," Erdogan said.

Erdogan, who has held talks by phone with Myanmar's key leader, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, added: "Buddhists always get represented as envoys of goodwill."

Hostile foreign agencies trying to destabilise country, warns COAS
[DAWN] Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Monday warned that "hostile agencies from abroad are trying to destabilise our country", days after a cross-border attack on a checkpost near the Rajgal Valley border martyred one soldier, the army's media wing said in a blurb.

"They [hostile agencies] fear the Army being a hurdle to achieving their nefarious designs," Gen Bajwa said during a visit to the family of Lt Arsalan Alam, the 22-year-old martyred soldier, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) handout.

The army chief said the armed forces would continue to perform in the country's best interests and stand by the nation against all challenges, the handout read.

"Pakistain's enemy is our enemy. Use of force is the prerogative of the state alone," he said, according to ISPR.

The army chief vowed to restore peace and rule of law "whatever sacrifices it may cost."

During his visit to Lt Alam's family home in Murree, the army chief paid tribute to the soldier and offered prayers for him, the ISPR said.

He also interacted with his family and said that the army and nation are proud of their deaders for their sacrifices, ISPR said.

"No power can harm us... [as long as] we have such valiant sons of the soil and their brave parents in Pakistain," he added.

The Pakistain Army recently concluded Operation Khyber IV in the Rajgal valley and declared that the area was cleared off terrorists.

Houthis fingered for gigging LNG customers
Jeddah- The manipulation of liquefied natural gas prices by Houthi rebels has led to a drastic rise in the prices of gas canisters, 60 percent of which are sent to areas under insurgent control.

This has led the prices to rise more than 400 percent from 1,200 Yemeni riyals ($4.8) to 5,000 riyals ($20).

Undersecretary of Oil and Minerals Ministry Eng. Shawqi al-Mekhlafi told Asharq Al-Awsat that the legitimate government has been taking care of all the Yemenis.

Based on this responsibility, the Yemen Gas Company (YGC) provided the entire country with domestic gas, but the Houthi militias have systematically destroyed the institutions and practiced illegal bill collection and competition in the black market, leading to unreasonable prices.

Mekhlafi pointed out that the official prices are still the same and have not been modified by the Ministry of Oil, which is currently producing about 75 gas tank trucks, each loaded with 25 tons of gas. One ton is used to fill 86 canisters, distributed according to the density of the population in each governorate and city.

He said that the official price of the gas cylinder is 1,200 Yemeni riyals ($4.8), and this price goes to all Yemeni provinces, including areas that fall under the control of Houthis and Saleh’s forces.

Those areas receive more than 60 percent of the volume of production, Mekhlafi added.

In the worst case scenario, the price of each gas canister in the liberated areas amounts to 1,500 riyals ($6), Mekhlafi explained, noting that in areas under the control of the militias the prices have amounted to 5,000 Yemeni riyals ($20) in recent weeks.

He stressed that the legitimate government, in cooperation with the Saudi-led Arab coalition and the United Nations, allows vessels carrying petroleum products to dock at the port of Hodeidah, but the Houthi militias sell the shipments double the price.

Army foils attack on Kalgai camp; kills 1 more militant
[Daily Excelsior] Army today said that they foiled a major attack on Army’s Kalgai camp near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri area of Baramulla district and recovered body of another holy warrior , taking the number of holy warriors killed in the operation to four.

Deputy Commander of 12-Brigade of Army based in Uri town, Colonel Harpreet Singh, told a news conference that holy warriors were well equipped and intended to carry out a major attack on Army’s Kalgai camp in Uri.

"These Death Eaters had infiltrated well equipped with explosives and intended to carry out a major attack on the army camp at Kalgai. The alertness and resilience of Army troops who engaged and neutralized the Death Eaters resulted in foiling another devastating terror strike in Uri sector", said Col Singh.

The Army officer said that they were trying to carry out last year’s Uri Brigade Headquarter type of attack. "Absolutely the way they have attacked and the warlike stores including IEDs suggested that they were likely to carry out the attack of the same magnitude", he said.

Army today said that they recovered body of another holy warrior from Kalgai area of Uri taking the number of holy warriors killed in the operation to four. The operation was launched yesterday and it was resumed this morning following reports that more holy warriors were hiding in the area.

Col Singh said that the search operation is still underway and we planned to clear the whole sector. He said operation is still underway and "we are trying, to sanitize the whole area. We had inputs especially regarding these four".

While giving details of the operation Col Singh said: "specific information was received by the Army from the sources about the presence of suspected terrorist in the adjoining areas of Kalgai camp. Late in the night of 23 September army established a cordon in the area by midnight and intercepted the Death Eaters while they were moving.

After an exchange of fire the terrorist took shelter in inhabited house wherein civilians were also present and they took the residents as the hostages. The civilians were rescued and taken out safely in a deliberate operation. After the daylong fire fight, four likely foreign Death Eaters were eliminated and a lot of warlike stores was recovered from them including IEDs".

The Army officer said: "While one terrorist was killed in the early morning, the remaining three kept the troops engaged by moving from one house to another taking the advantage of thick foliage and maze fields there. The houses were cleared by the Army in a deliberate operation during which the remaining three Death Eaters were also eliminated. The local mosque in the close vicinity was cleared by the police keeping the sensitivities in mind".

Lebanon's president says Syrian refugees must return home
[Ynet] The Lebanese president says he wants some 1.5 million Syrian refugees living in his country to henceforth start returning to their homes, voluntarily or not.

President Michel Aoun
...a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
, in a state visit to La Belle France, said Monday that UN assistance given to aid Syrian refugees in "camps of misery" in Leb would be better used to return them to their country "from now on."

"We don't want to wait for their voluntary return," Aoun insisted, speaking at the Elysee Palace alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.

Aoun said that most of the Syrian regions from which the refugees hail are "now secure."

Iran closes border with Iraqi Kurdistan, Iraq army starts major maneuvers with Turkish army
[DAWN] Iran has shut its border with Iraqi Kurdistan in response to its independence referendum, the foreign ministry said on Monday.

"At the request of the Iraqi government, we have closed our land and air borders" with Iraqi Kurdistan, foreign ministry front man Bahram Ghasemi said at a presser.

The referendum is "illegal and illegitimate," he added.

Iran had already announced on Sunday that it was stopping all flights to and from Iraqi Kurdistan in response to the vote.

President Hassan Rouhani spoke overnight with Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi, saying: "The Islamic republic of Iran fully supports the central government of Iraq."

Iraq army starts major maneuvers with Turkish army at the border

[Ynet] The Iraqi army started "major maneuvers" with the Turkish army at the border, the Iraqi defense ministry said on Monday.

The two countries are coordinating measures against the autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq in retaliation for a non-binding independence referendum organized there on Monday.

Pakistan slams India for using photograph gaffe to 'divert attention' from held Kashmir
[DAWN] Pakistan's Mission to the United Nations (UN), responding on Monday to a photograph mix-up made earlier by Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN Maleeha Lodhi, accused India of hiding behind a picture to divert the world's attention from the situation on the ground in India-held Kashmir (IHK).

Lodhi, during a fiery speech in the UN General Assembly on Saturday, had shared photographs of victims of pellet gun attacks ─ infamous for depriving victims of their sight ─ purportedly taken in held Kashmir.

One of the photographs shown by Lodhi, however, stirred controversy when observers pointed out it was a picture of a Palestinian girl injured by strikes in Gaza, taken by photographer Heidi Levine in 2014.

Indian media outlets were quick to point out that Lodhi had erred, and the diplomat came under fire on social media for the blunder.

The Indian mission to the UN, exercising its right of reply, lambasted Lodhi for "callously holding a picture of an injured girl", and accused her of seeking to divert attention from "Pakistan's role as the hub of global terrorism".

Lodhi "misled this assembly by displaying this picture to spread falsehoods about India, a fake picture to push a completely false narrative," an Indian diplomat alleged. She went onto share a photograph of an Indian soldier allegedly killed by militants in held Kashmir's Shopian district.

Pakistan's mission, in its latest rejoinder to India, asserted: "No matter how many times you repeat a lie, it does not and cannot hide the truth."

The Pakistani representative claimed the Indian representative had "once again chosen to divert the attention of the international community from the real issue ─ the real issue of human life, of human eyes, of children and infants blinded forever, of women raped and elderly killed every day by the reign of brutality unleashed by occupation forces in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir."

"The real issue is of Security Council resolutions, which India refuses to implement," the Pakistani representative said.

"No matter how many times you repeat a lie, it does not and cannot hide the truth. Raking up debate on pictures has backfired," he maintained.

"India, who kills and tortures innocent Kashmiris, is seeking to hide behind a photograph," he claimed, adding: "Indian state terrorism has been amply documented by successive human rights reports from various international organisations. There are thousands of those pictures for everyone to see."

"India’s diversionary tactics will not change the situation on ground. It is the situation on ground that India has to answer for. It is its war crimes that India has to answer for. It is the call for legality, morality and conscience that it has to answer for," he asserted.

The Pakistani representative went on to accuse Indian leaders of "pursuing a policy of state sponsorship of terrorism, funding and arming terrorist organisations like the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Jamaatul Ahrar to launch terror attacks inside Pakistan" as part of its strategy to become "a regional hegemon".

"India is churning out operatives of mayhem from its factories of terror," he said. "Operatives like Commander Jadhav, who are spreading terror and violence across Pakistan. We caught Jadhav red-handed, we will catch others as well and bring them to justice," he said.

Although the photograph shown by Ambassador Lodhi does appear to be an old photograph of a girl in Gaza, the use of pellet guns by Indian forces against Kashmiris has been criticised on the record by rights organisations such as Amnesty International.

Ben Roethlisberger Regrets Steelers Boycotting Anthem
[HOLLYWOODREPORTER] Ben Roethlisberger on Monday afternoon released a statement saying he regretted his Pittsburgh Steelers boycotting the national anthem on Sunday.

The NFL team was the first of three to not come out for the pregame ritual.

"I was unable to sleep last night and want to share my thoughts and feelings on our team’s decision to remain in the tunnel for the National Anthem yesterday," the Super Bowl-winning QB said in a statement. "The idea was to be unified as a team when so much attention is paid to things dividing our country, but I wish we approached it differently. We did not want to appear divided on the sideline with some standing and some kneeling or sitting.

He continued, "As a team, it was not a protest of the flag or the Anthem. I personally don’t believe the Anthem is ever the time to make any type of protest. For me, and many others on my team and around the league, it is a tribute to those who commit to serve and protect our country, current and past, especially the ones that made the ultimate sacrifice."

Steelers' lineman Alejandro Villanueva, a former Army Ranger, stood an the entrance of the tunnel for the anthem. His jersey has been the top seller since that moment, according to Fanatics. The NFL shop also moved his jersey to the top spot on the team store page.

The other two teams to not come out for the anthem were the Tennessee Titans and Seattle Seahawks.

On National People's Radio yesterday, Tennessee and Seattle were described as being no-shows for the anthem but there was no mention of the Steelers and Alejandro Villanueva at all. Curious, eh?

Personally, I'd be more impressed with the 'protests' if all these highly-paid children were doing something that actually made a difference rather than yelling "Hey, look at me!". President to disclose some details of his tax reform plan Wednesday in Indianapolis
[IndyStar] WASHINGTON ‐ President Trump will announce in Indianapolis Wednesday details of his plan to overhaul the federal tax code, the White House announced Monday.

While the tax plan is still being developed, Trump will talk at the Indiana State Fairgrounds about elements that have been finalized, said White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Those elements include the reductions in corporate and individual tax rates Trump wants to see, as well as how he would eliminate "loopholes that have rigged the current tax code in favor of the wealthy and well-connected."

If the plan becomes law, Sanders said the result will be "massive job creation and economic growth."

"We are confident the American people will be very excited about what we are proposing," she said.

The event in the Farm Bureau Building will be Trump’s first visit to the state since his inauguration. Trump is scheduled to speak at 5 p.m. Details about public admission have not been released.

Syrian rebel groups attacks ISIS position in Deir Ezzor
Deir Ezzor (Syria News) The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), on Monday, launched an attack on the headquarters of the Islamic State group, northeast of Deir Ezzor.

Qasioun News reported that The Syrian Democratic Forces militia launched an attack on the headquarters of the Islamic State group, near al-Soor City, northeast of Deir Ezzor.

Clashes broke out between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Islamic State militants; meanwhile, the international coalition warplanes bombarded the headquarters of the Islamic State group in the villages of Hassan Gomaa and Garya, which are located on the banks of Khabour River.

The attack was launched after the SDF seized the industrial City, north of Deir Ezzor, then moved towards the northeast areas, after seizing Koniko oil field.

It is noteworthy that the Islamic State lost large areas in the countryside of Deir Ezzor, while the Russian Ministry of Defense posted photos showing coordination between the U.S. troops and the Islamic State militants in the area.

General Mattis Is Too Busy Defending The Country To Care About The NFL
[Daily Caller] Secretary of Defense James Mattis steered clear of passing any type of judgement on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem during a press gaggle on a flight to India Monday.

"I’m the secretary of defense. We defend the country," is all Mattis would give on the subject. Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Rob Manning went a bit further in a briefing with reporters Monday with respect to service academy players, expressing his "hope" that they would stand.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly denounced the NFL and players who kneel during the anthem in recent days.

The provincial police commandment in a statement said the Arclight airstrike was carried out on Sunday in the vicinity of Haska Mina district.

The statement further added that a Toyota Corolla type vehicle of the holy warriors was targeted in the Arclight airstrike, leaving at least five turbans dead.

Several weapons, ammunition, and explosives loaded on the vehicle were also destroyed, the statement added

In the meantime, the Taliban

According to the police commandment, at least two Taliban murderous Moslems were killed after the Afghan forces responded to the enemy fire.

The local security officials are saying that the local residents and security personnel have not suffered any casualties during the Arclight airstrike and festivities.

The US forces conduct Arclight airstrikes, mainly using unmanned aerial vehicles, almost on daily basis in a bid to eliminate the terrorist safe havens and prevent them from expanding their foothold in the country.

The Arclight airstrikes resumed last year and after a broader role was granted to the US forces by the former US administration.

Egypt court jails prominent opposition figure expected to run for president
[Iran Press TV] In a likely bid to block his candidacy, an Egyptian court has handed down a jail term to a major opposition leader widely expected to challenge President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in next year's polls for offending public morals.

During his trial on Monday at the misdemeanor court of Cairo’s Dokki neighborhood, Khaled Ali, who did not appear in the court, was sentenced to three months in prison and ordered to pay 1,000 Egyptian pounds (about $57) on bail for publicly making an indecent finger gesture.

The alleged offense took place back in January outside an Egyptian courthouse in the capital Cairo, where Ali and other attorneys had just won a major case against Sisi’s government, obstructing its efforts to hand over the possession of the country’s two strategic islands in the Red Sea to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Despite the ruling, the Egyptian president approved the transfer of the two islands to the Saudi regime, which finances Cairo with massive supplies of oil.

The Monday’s verdict against the prominent opposition figure can be appealed but if it stands, it will prevent him from running for president.

This is while London-based rights group Amnesia Amnesty International censured Ali’s sentencing as a "politically-motivated" in a statement issued on Monday.

"Khaled Ali’s politically-motivated conviction today is a clear signal that the Egyptian authorities are intent on eliminating any rival who could stand in the way of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s victory in next year’s elections. It also illustrates the government’s ruthless determination to crush dissent to consolidate its power," said Amnesia Amnesty International’s Head of North Africa Campaigns, Najia Bounaim.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Umm al-Fahm holds service in memory of Muslim Brotherhood leader
[Ynet] While Arab countries barred supporters of the Islamist movement from holding events honoring Mohammed Mahdi Akef, tossed in the calaboose in Egypt for his involvement in killing of protesters in 2012, public ceremonies were held in only three places: Turkey, Gazoo... and Israel.

A religious ceremony in memory of former Moslem Brüderbund leader Mohammed Mahdi Akef was held in Umm al-Fahm
...home of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement, the sons of the community have been in the news a number of times during the current effort...
on Saturday.

The Moslem Brüderbund is a patron of both Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", and the outlawed northern branch of the Islamic Movement.

Akef was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted, along with the rest of the leaders of the Moslem Brüderbund, for his involvement in the killing of demonstrators outside the organization's offices in Cairo during the wave of mass protests against the regime of Mohammed Morsi in 2012.

His health deteriorated while in prison, and he was transferred to a hospital, where he died last week at age 89.

The ceremony in his memory was held at a mosque in the Israeli Arab city of Umm al-Fahm, with several dozens of people in attendance.

Dr. Mashoor Fuaz, a prominent religious leader in the city, led the ceremony. "The Islamic nation lost one of its great preachers, who stood firm in the face of tyrants and refused to serve as a tool for oppression," Fuaz said in his eulogy. "He preferred to live behind bars than give up his religious and political principles."

Most Arab states barred religious services in Akef's memory, and ceremonies that were held were mostly done in secret. In Egypt, the family had to bury him in a small ceremony late at night to prevent the Moslem Brüderbund from taking advantage of the funeral to hold a rally.

The only places where public ceremonies were held in Akef's memory were The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and the Gazoo Strip, two countries with strong affiliation to the Moslem Brüderbund and its worldviews.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), Maj. Gen. Yoav Mordechai, slammed Hamas for holding a memory for Akef, saying "It appears Hamas can erase from its flag the empty words and leave only its true symbol: the two swords of the Moslem Brüderbund, their real leaders."

Mordechai's comments were made before the memorial service in Umm al-Fahm.

One of the participants at the Umm al-Fahm ceremony told Ynet, "It doesn't matter if we're attacked for holding a prayer in memory of the former Moslem Brüderbund leader. He deserves more than this. We don't care about any objections, only about doing what we believe. The Moslem Brüderbund is always portrayed as a group of terrorists, but the truth is they want to make life good and safe."
Their end goal is no different than ISIS, it's only on methods and timing that they disagree.
Another participant insisted that "All we can do is hold prayer in his memory. A person like this contributed a lot. We will never forget him."

Umm al-Fahm has been in the spotlight in recent months as the home of three Israeli Arab bully boyz who carried out a shooting attack on the Temple Mount, killing two Israeli Border Policemen.

The attack led to a temporary closure of the Temple Mount complex, followed by the addition of security measures, which caused violent rioting in east Jerusalem and in the West Bank and to a crisis in Israel's relations with Jordan and with the Paleostinian Authority.

Thousands took part in the funerals of the three attackers in Umm al-Fahm, calling them "heroes" and "deaders."

The Guy Who Recreated Seth Rich's Murder Wants Robert Mueller to Get Involved in the Case
[Washingtonian] Jack Burkman popped back up Monday to tout the latest milestone in his obsessive interest in the case of Seth Rich: an ad seeking tips on the murdered Democratic National Committee staffer that Burkman says will air on cable news in the 22 largest television markets, including on Tuesday morning on Washington.

In the spot, the lawyer and lobbyist identifies himself as the leader of an "independent commission" investigating the Rich case. That’s a reference to the Profiling Project, a group of George Washington University forensic students he says he’s been funding to review Rich’s death, which has been the subject of several unfounded conspiracy theories, including one pushed by Burkman himself, which likely explains his decision to produce the ad with Russian subtitles.

Rich died early in the morning of July 10, 2016, after being shot outside his home in Northeast DC after walking home from Columbia Heights, where he had spent the evening at a bar. Rich was found with bruises on his legs and hands, and his watchband was torn, suggesting signs of a physical altercation. DC’s Metropolitan Police Department has been investigating Rich’s death as the result of an attempted armed robbery gone awry. But Burkman believes that Rich was killed by a Russian hit squad after finding out the DNC’s email servers had been hacked by the Kremlin, a narrative that exists as a kind of odd cousin to the more popular‐and equally unfounded‐conspiracy theory that Rich was the victim of a revenge killing after supposedly furnishing Wikileaks with Democratic Party emails.

I thought the Russian hack theory put forth by CrowdStrike had been discredited. The proof for the latter theory seems to be far stronger.

#6  I don't think Mueller wants to get involved in Seth Rich's murder investigation. After all, most of the people on the kangaroo court on his staff are Hillary supporters. Mueller's purpose is to go after Trump and to get him neutered/impeached. Mueller is yet another backstop of the shadow government to prevent Hillary, WJC, Lynch, Holder, and Obama from getting prosecuted for their crimes.

Government
VDH: Beware of Narratives and Misinformation
Narratives surrounding the DNC hack & Antifa reveal media bias and government bureaucracy at their worst.

U.S. intelligence agencies said Russia was responsible for hacking Democratic National Committee e-mail accounts, leading to the publication of about 20,000 stolen e-mails on WikiLeaks.

But that finding was reportedly based largely on the DNC’s strange outsourcing of the investigation to a private cybersecurity firm. Rarely does the victim of a crime first hire a private investigator whose findings later form the basis of government conclusions.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is many things. But so far he has not been caught lying about the origin of the leaked documents that came into his hands. He has insisted for well over a year that the Russians did not provide him with the DNC e-mails.

When it was discovered that the e-mails had been compromised, then‐DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz weirdly refused to allow forensic detectives from the FBI to examine the DNC server to probe the evidence of the theft. Why did the FBI accept that refusal?

That strange behavior was not as bizarre as Wasserman Schultz’s later frenzied efforts to protect her information-technology specialist, Imran Awan, from Capitol Police and FBI investigations. Both agencies were hot on Awan’s trail for unlawfully transferring secure data from government computers, and also for bank and federal-procurement fraud.

So far, the story of the DNC hack is not fully known, but it may eventually be revealed that it involves other actors beyond just the Russians.

There is not much left to the media myth of James Comey as dutiful FBI director, unjustly fired by a partisan and vindictive President Donald Trump. A closer look suggests that Comey may have been the most politicized, duplicitous, and out-of-control FBI director since J. Edgar Hoover.

During the 2016 election, Comey, quite improperly, was put into the role of prosecutor, judge, and jury in the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private e-mail server while she was secretary of state. That proved a disaster. Comey has admitted under oath to deliberately leaking his own notes ‐ which were likely government property ‐ to the media to prompt the appointment of a special counsel. That ploy worked like clockwork, and by a strange coincidence it soon resulted in the selection of his friend, former FBI director Robert Mueller.

When or if ever revealed it will most likely be far stranger than we can imagine.

Re Assange. I tend to believe him. He seems to have a kind of ethic where protecting sources and truth-telling is valued. Many argue about how he obtains the info which he publishes. They also question his lack of a filter when revealing State and Deep State secrets. There is an argument to be made about his lack of a filter which could be dangerous to those who practice spy craft and those who carry out government policy. He has short-circuited the usual machinery of government. Some things need the light of day on them whereas others require discretion--how to balance these is a problem.

I think the term dereliction of duty is being too charitable. Collusion is more like it.

Syrian regulars launch operation in Rif Dimashq
Rif Dimashq (Syria News) Syrian army, backed by the 4th brigade, carried out two military operations, on Monday, on the outskirts of Eastern Ghouta area, in Rif Dimashq Province.

A source told Qasioun News informed that the Syrian army, backed by the 4th brigade, carried out two military operations on the outskirts of Eastern Ghouta area from Ain Tarma towns and Hosh Dawahra area in Rif Dimashq Province. However, Syrian rebels managed to foil the attacks and shelled several villages and towns in Eastern Ghouta.

Meanwhile, Syrian army troops bombed the villages and towns of Douma, Arbin, Kafrbatna, Madira, Nashabya, Beit Lahm, Jasrin, Hamorya, Hazze, Raihan and Shayfonya.

Furthermore, dozens of rockets fell on the residential neighborhoods in Ain Tarma, causing only material damage to the property.

It is noteworthy that the Syrian army failed in the past few months to achieve any progress in Eastern Ghouta area, while deployed troops in the area.

US officials reportedly claim Iran’s latest missile test a fake
[IsraelTimes] Tehran hailed Saturday's launch of 1,250-mile range Khoramshahr that could reach Israel, but sources now say video was recycled footage.

US officials have reportedly said that Iran’s claim it tested a ballistic missile over the weekend that could reach Israel was a lie, and a video of the launch was in fact recycled footage of a previous missile test.

Iran said on Saturday that it had successfully tested a new medium-range missile, in defiance of warnings from Washington that it is ready to ditch a landmark nuclear deal over the issue.

State television carried footage of the launch of the Khoramshahr missile, which was first displayed at a high-profile military parade in Tehran on Friday. It also carried in-flight video from the nose cone.

But according to a Fox News report, two US officials claim that the video was more than seven months old and dated back to a failed launch in late January, which resulted in the missile exploding shortly after lift off.

The Iranian broadcaster gave no date for Saturday’s apparent test, although Tehran officials had said on Friday that it would be tested "soon."

Previous Iranian missile launches have triggered US sanctions and accusations that they violate the spirit of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers.
The Mad Mullahs are clearly not bound by the letter of the agreement. It seems a bit silly, therefore, to expect them to pay any attention to the spirit of the thing.
Trump has threatened to scrap and/or amend the agreement over the issue, saying that Iran’s missile program could give it the technical know-how for a delivery system for a nuclear warhead when a sunset clause in the deal expires in 2025.

He is due to report to Congress on October 15 on whether or not he believes Iran is in compliance with the nuclear deal. If he decides that it is not, it could open the way for renewed US sanctions and perhaps the collapse of the agreement. Trump said on Wednesday he had made his decision, but was not yet ready to reveal it.

Iran says Trump’s claims it works with N. Korea on missiles are ‘nonsense’

[IsraelTimes] Newly tested Khoramshahr rocket, capable of reaching Israel, is entirely homegrown, officials insist.

There has been speculation, particularly from Iran critics in Washington, that the Khoramshahr was based on North Korea’s intermediate-range Musudan missile.

In 2010, a diplomatic cable released by Wikileaks showed that US intelligence officers believed North Korea had shipped Musudan missiles to Iran.

But some analysts say the differing ranges cast doubt on those concerns.

A detailed report earlier this year by the US-Korea Institute at John Hopkins University in the United States found: “The available evidence cannot verify speculation that the Iranian missile is similar to North Korea’s Musudan.”

Iran and North Korea have cooperated on military technology in the past.

During Iran’s war with Iraq in the 1980s, it turned to North Korea as one of the only sources of military assistance, importing a stockpile of Nodong missiles.

Iran used the Nodong to develop its own medium-range Shahab-3 missile, first tested in 1998, and it has continued to improve on the design since.

But there has been scant evidence of direct cooperation between the two countries in recent years, with Iran seemingly keen to distance itself from the East Asian pariah state.

Instead, Iran has emphasized its home-grown missile program, and denied that this breaches any international laws, though it has drawn repeated UN resolutions demanding an end to missile development by Tehran.

“Since the criticism of American officials, the speed of missile development has increased several times,” said General Amir Ali Hadjizadeh, head of aerospace forces for Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, according to state television on Monday.

“All the materiel and pieces for our missiles are manufactured locally and do not come from abroad,” he said.

He said the Khoramshahr missile was 13 meters (43 feet) long and could carry an 1,800 kilogram (almost 4,000-pound) payload.

Iraq
Iraqi Kurds count referendum votes
[Al Jazeera] Voting stations set up for the Iraqi Kurdish referendum have closed their doors and counting of ballots has begun, according to the official supervising body.

Voting closed at 6pm local time (16:00 GMT) on Monday, and the final results were expected to be announced within 72 hours.

Erbil-based Rudaw TV, citing the Independent High Elections and Referendum Commission, said 78 percent of the more than five million eligible voters turned out to vote.

In Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
authorities declared a curfew an hour and a half before polls closed as jubilant Kurds started to celebrate.

Kurds in the northern Iraqi city flocked to polling stations, but there has been lingering opposition of the vote among the Arabs and Turkmen who live alongside them.

Voters were asked to tick either Yes or No on the ballot asking them just one question in Kurdish, Ottoman Turkish, Arabic and Assyrian: "Do you want the Kurdistan Region and Kurdistani areas outside the (Kurdistan) Region to become an independent country?"

The referendum is opposed by the Iraqi central government in Baghdad as well as the neighbouring countries of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Iran, besides major international powers.

Kurdish referendum ‘declaration of war on Iraq's unity’ - Maliki

[Iran Press TV] Iraq’s Vice President Nouri al-Maliki has called for a referendum on the unity of the entire Iraq, stressing that the Israeli-backed plot to partition Iraq had failed.

"All confirm the unconstitutionality of the referendum [for independence of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region], because it is clearly aimed at [undermining] the unity of Iraq. This vote would have serious repercussions for the future of Iraq in general and Kurdish region in particular," Maliki said in the capital Baghdad on Monday.

The Iraqi vice president also called on the central government in Baghdad to take legal actions against all those who support the Kurdish separation vote, stating that the policies adopted by Massoud Barzani
... hereditary head of the Kurdish Democratic Party, maybe a little too close to the Medes and the Persians for most people's tastes...
, the president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, were meant to tear Iraq apart.

"The positions of Iraq's neighboring countries have been firm and clear concerning this illegal action," Maliki said, urging those countries "to boycott the Kurdistan region politically and economically and stop security cooperation with it."

Maliki had already denounced the Kurdish independence referendum in a meeting with US Ambassador to Iraq, Douglas Silliman, on September 17, warning that Baghdad would not tolerate the establishment of "a second Israel,"

Iraqi parliament demands troops be deployed to areas disputed with Kurds

[Iran Press TV] Iraqi politicians have demanded deployment of government troops to areas disputed with Kurds amid rising tensions between the central government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government over a controversial independence referendum.

Hakim Abbas Mousa Abbas al-Zamili, a politician from the Sadrist Movement, said on Monday that the parliament had approved several tough measures in response to the contentious Kurdish independence vote.

He added that in line with these measures, Baghdad would have to act to "protect Iraq's unity and to deploy troops in all [disputed] areas."

Zamili further stated that the measures also called for the closure of all border crossings with the Kurdish region.

The Iraqi parliament considers the Kurdish independence referendum as "unconstitutional" and has called for punitive measures against all Kurdish officials and civil servants involved in it, the Iraqi politician pointed out.

Kurdish Independence may have regional destabilizing effects: UN

[Iran Press TV] United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced his worries over the "potentially destabilizing effects" of a controversial referendum on the independence of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region from Iraq’s central government.

"The Secretary-General respects the illusory sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity of Iraq and considers that all outstanding issues between the federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government should be resolved through structured dialogue and constructive compromise," said Guterres’ front man, Stéphane Dujarric, on Monday.

He added that Guterres also voiced hopes that following the referendum United Nations-mandated activities throughout Iraq, including in the Kurdistan region, will be permitted to continue unhindered.

Syria rejects controversial referendum
Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the pastor had finally been wrestled from the pulpit.
Y'got the wrong guy! he yelled just before Sergeant Malone's billy club landed...

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has rejected the independence referendum by Iraq’s Kurds as "unacceptable," stressing that Damascus only recognizes a unified Iraq.

"We reject any action that leads to the fragmentation of Iraq...This step is unacceptable and we do not recognize it," he added.

Another Syrian foreign ministerial official, Ayman Soussan, also slammed the vote noting that it was the result of the US’ regional policies.

"This is the result of American policies that seek to break apart the countries of the region and create conflicts between their parts," he said, adding that the referendum "harms Iraq and the Kurdish brothers."
"Destabilizing effect".... how would we know ?

Southeast Asia
Mass grave of Hindus found, claims Myanmar army
[DAWN] Myanmar’s army said on Sunday it had discovered a mass grave containing the bodies of 28 Hindus, including women and kiddies, in Rakhine state, blaming the killings on Moslem Rohingya bully boys.

Thousands of Hindus have fled villages where they once lived alongside Moslems, alleging that they were targeted by bandidos forces of Evil whose Aug 25 raids plunged Rakhine into communal violence.

The announcement could not be independently verified in an region where access has been tightly controlled by Myanmar’s army.

"Security members found and dug up 28 dead bodies of Hindus who were cruelly and violently killed by ARSA hard boy Bengali murderous Moslems in Rakhine State," a statement posted on the army chief’s website said. The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) is the group whose attacks on police posts triggered an army backlash so brutal that the UN believes it amounts to ethnic cleansing of the Moslem minority.

More than 430,000 Rohingya have fled the region to Bangladesh in under a month. Around 30,000 Hindus and Buddhists based in the area have also been displaced by the violence. Both communities have told AFP they were terrorised by Rohingya bully boys.

The army said that security officers found a total of 20 dead women and eight men in two graves, including six boys under the age of ten. A strong smell led security officers to the burial site outside of Ye Baw Kya village, the army said.

Unverifiable photos published by the government’s Information Committee showed corpses laid out in rows on grass near two mud pits where they were found.

Myanmar government front man Zaw Htay confirmed the grim discovery to AFP, as did a police brass hat in Rakhine who requested anonymity. The village where the bodies were found, Ye Baw Kya, lies near a cluster of Hindu and Moslem communities in northern Rakhine called Kha Maung Seik.

Last week Hindus from the area told AFP that bandidos forces of Evil swept into their villages on Aug 25 with sticks and knives, attacking people who stood in their way, killing many and taking others into the forest. Hindu women are believed to have been kidnapped by the bully boys.

The grim discovery of the graves will further fuel already white-hot hatred between ethnic groups in Myanmar.
