The Deep State Strikes
h/t Instapundit
In case anyone still doubts it, the deep state is real.

That doesn't mean people in public life still don't do dumb things. It also doesn't mean unqualified people don't, either by appointment or through election, get into positions of power and authority. But you don't have to be a raging paranoid to believe it exists, is active, and has more to say about what the government does than we do.

The federal government is unaccountably large. Whatever accountability people think exists is largely a fiction maintained not by the rule of law but by the actions of men. Friday's news that former White House national security adviser Mike Flynn has pleaded guilty to a single count from among the charges brought against him by former FBI Director Robert Mueller and his merry band of cutthroats should make that clear.

Perhaps Flynn did break the law. He's admitted as much ‐ but why? Did he do it because he was guilty (and agreed to say anything) in order to avoid having his life ruined by crushing legal expenses and in order to see his son remain at liberty?

...There are lots of powerful people in both political parties and around the globe who didn't want Trump to win the election. They were afraid, and rightly so, that he meant it when he said he would pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accords and the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.

...We're approaching a constitutional crisis that gets at the essence of self-government. Should "We, the people" be in charge of the U.S. government or should that role be ceded even further to the career bureaucrats, members of the Foreign Service, Capitol Hill staff, K Street lobbyists, media stars and others who make up the permanent government? The day of reckoning is coming, something the president could bring about sooner rather than later by ‐ now that he has pleaded guilty to something - pardoning Flynn in order to destroy Mueller's ability to put pressure on him. It would be something to see, watching the special prosecutor and his minions try to move ahead in their effort to construct a semblance of proof the Trump campaign coordinated activities with the Russian government to the detriment of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign without being able to squeeze a key player in this fantastic fantasy. It's not a matter of Flynn not being able to talk as much as it is liberating him to talk about the pressure applied to him by the prosecutor ‐ which, if past behavior is any indication, probably should itself constitute some kind of a crime.

US quits UN global compact on migration, says it'll set its own policy
Another good move against the Soros/EU/UN/Obama agenda
[CNN] The United States notified the United Nations that it will no longer take part in the global compact on migration, saying it undermines the nation's sovereignty.

The US has been a part of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants since it was formed last year. The declaration aims to ensure the rights of migrants, help them resettle and provide them with access to education and jobs.

It calls for the negotiation of a global compact on migration, which is expected to be adopted next year.
Yeah...NO
In explaining its withdrawal Saturday, the US said the pact contains provisions that are inconsistent with the nation's immigration policies. While the US is proud of its leadership on migration and refugee issues, the global approach is not compatible with the nation's sovereignty, according to Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN.

Haley said Trump made the decision, and emphasized that Americans should determine their own policies on immigration.

"Our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone," she said. "We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country."

The UN General Assembly president expressed regret at the US decision, saying no one nation can manage international migration alone.
We want manage our own, We are not subject to your rules
"The role of the United States in this process is critical as it has historically and generously welcomed people from all across the globe and remains home to the largest number of international migrants in the world," UN General Assembly president Miroslav Lajčák said in a statement.

"As such, it has the experience and expertise to help ensure that this process leads to a successful outcome."

The US participation in the process started last year "following the Obama Administration's decision to join the UN's New York Declaration on Migration," according to the United States Mission to the UN.

The withdrawal comes days before a global conference on migration that starts Monday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

US charter schools put growing numbers in racial isolation
MILWAUKEE (AP) ‐ Charter schools are among the nation’s most segregated, an Associated Press analysis finds ‐ an outcome at odds, critics say, with their goal of offering a better alternative to failing traditional public schools.

National enrollment data shows that charters are vastly over-represented among schools where minorities study in the most extreme racial isolation. As of school year 2014-2015, more than 1,000 of the nation’s 6,747 charter schools had minority enrollment of at least 99 percent, and the number has been rising steadily.

The problem: Those levels of segregation correspond with low achievement levels at schools of all kinds.

In the AP analysis of student achievement in the 42 states that have enacted charter school laws, along with the District of Columbia, the performance of students in charter schools varies widely. But schools that enroll 99 percent minorities ‐ both charters and traditional public schools ‐ on average have fewer students reaching state standards for proficiency in reading and math.

"Desegregation works. Nothing else does," said Daniel Shulman, a Minnesota civil rights attorney. "There is no amount of money you can put into a segregated school that is going to make it equal."

Shulman singled out charter schools for blame in a lawsuit that accuses the state of Minnesota of allowing racially segregated schools to proliferate, along with achievement gaps for minority students. Minority-owned charters have been allowed wrongly to recruit only minorities, he said, as others wrongly have focused on attracting whites.

Even some charter school officials acknowledge this is a concern. Nearly all the students at Milwaukee’s Bruce-Guadalupe Community School are Hispanic, and most speak little or no English when they begin elementary school. The school set out to serve Latinos, but it also decided against adding a high school in hopes that its students will go on to schools with more diversity.

"The beauty of our school is we’re 97 percent Latino," said Pascual Rodriguez, the school’s principal. "The drawback is we’re 97 percent Latino ... Well, what happens when they go off into the real world where you may be part of an institution that’s not 97 percent Latino?"

The charter school movement born a quarter of a century ago has thrived in large urban areas, where advocates say they often aim to serve students ‐ by and large, minorities ‐ who have been let down by their district schools. And on average, children in hyper-segregated charters do at least marginally better on tests than those in comparably segregated traditional schools.

Skipping down to the.... bottom line:

Howard Fuller, who was superintendent of Milwaukee schools from 1991 to 1995, rejects criticism of racially isolated charters. He says the imbalances reflect deep-rooted segregation, and it is unfair to put the burden on charters to pursue integration.

In a city where many black students live in poverty, and some reach high school not knowing how to read, he said there are other, more pressing problems.

“It’s a waste of time to talk about integration,” he said. “How do these kids get the best education possible?”

#1  He [Milwaukee Supt. Howard Fuller] says the imbalances reflect deep-rooted segregation, and it is unfair to put the burden on charters to pursue integration.

So additional 'segregation' is the answer? Just asking.

I know it sounds antiquated, but let us suppose for a moment that everyone regardless of race or ethnic background, performs to a single standard and sinks or swims accordingly.

#2  ...The real problem is that the way we run public school systems here has been badly broken for about sixty years now and that most systems now are welfare programs for 'administrators' that happen to run vaguely educational programs.

I mean, seriously - how does the constantly increasing cost of educating a constantly decreasing number of students make any possible sense?

#8  And on average, children in hyper-segregated charters do at least marginally better on tests than those in comparably segregated traditional schools.

That sentence matters. Those children are in charter schools because their parents are trying to get them a better education than the local public school provides — and more of them than not are getting it.

#9  Teachers will tell you what is wrong. There is a complete lack of support from the parent(s) for those kids that don't do well and it goes right along racial lines. You can put all the black/brown minority kids in the best schools and they won't do shit because there is no support at home and no one gives a shit. Why try to work hard when sugar daddy government pays your way?

I been earning a living as a substitute teacher/private tutor for the last three years Darth (and spent the preceding 35 in various academic institutions), and I'll tell you that is wrong - the fact that most of the professional teachers have the competence of cockroaches. I've met biology teachers who don't understand evolution*, Science teachers who are fervent believers in AGW. Math teachers who can't solve textbook problems. Hell, I even met one cunt delitfull young lady - Grom Jr. math teacher - who thinks distributive law can apply to a situation where there is only multiplication (I think she confuses distributive law with having brackets).

CIA chief Pompeo says he warned Iran's Soleimani over Iraq aggression
US Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo said on Saturday he sent a letter to Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani and Iranian leaders expressing concern regarding Iran's increasingly threatening behavior in Iraq. Speaking during a panel at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in Southern California, Pompeo said he sent the letter after the senior Iranian military commander had indicated that forces under his control might attack US forces in Iraq. He did not specify the date.

"What we were communicating to him in that letter was that we will hold he and Iran accountable for any attacks on American interests in Iraq by forces that are under their control," Pompeo told the panel.

"We wanted to make sure he and the leadership in Iran understood that in a way that was crystal clear."

Soleimani, who is the commander of foreign operations for Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, refused to open the letter, according to Pompeo, who took over the CIA in January.

Don't eat or drink anything Betty Miller gives you at Wake Robin Senior Living
[Guardian] A resident of a retirement community made the deadly toxin ricin and tested it on her neighbours by putting it on their food or in drinks, investigators said.

Betty Miller told an FBI agent she wanted to "injure herself" and was testing the effectiveness of the poison on other residents at the Wake Robin senior living facility, according to a criminal complaint.

Miller, 70, made her first appearance in federal court on Friday. Judge John Conroy noted that she had a "lengthy mental health history" but did not elaborate. She was placed in custody and was scheduled to be in court again on Wednesday. Miller said she was working on getting a lawyer.

Police were called to the senior community in Shelburne on Tuesday after Miller told heathcare providers she had manufactured the ricin and placed it on other residents’ food and beverages, the agent said in the complaint.

The state health department said on Friday it became aware of one person who probably became ill with ricin poisoning but said no one was currently ill.

Miller said she harvested 30 to 40 castor beans from plants growing on Wake Robin’s property and made two to three tablespoons of ricin twice in her kitchen, the complaint said. She exposed other residents to the ricin on at least three occasions, the complaint said.

Nunes blows up, threatens contempt after FBI stonewalls House on Russia investigator demoted for anti-Trump bias
[Washington Examiner] House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes has issued an angry demand to the FBI and Department of Justice to explain why they kept the committee in the dark over the reason Special Counsel Robert Mueller kicked a key supervising FBI agent off the Trump-Russia investigation.
Hopefully "blows up" was used in a figurative sense.
Stories in both the Washington Post and New York Times on Saturday reported that Peter Strzok, who played a key role in the original FBI investigation into the Trump-Russia matter, and then a key role in Mueller's investigation, and who earlier had played an equally critical role in the FBI's Hillary Clinton email investigation, was reassigned out of the Mueller office because of anti-Trump texts he exchanged with a top FBI lawyer, Lisa Page, with whom Strzok was having an extramarital affair. Strzok was transferred to the FBI's human resources office ‐ an obvious demotion -- in July.

The Post reported that Strzok and Page exchanged text messages that "expressed anti-Trump sentiments and other comments that appeared to favor Clinton."

Word of the messages and the affair were news to Nunes, even though the committee had issued a subpoena that covered information about Strzok's demotion more than three months ago. The committee's broadly worded subpoena for information related to the so-called Trump dossier went to the FBI and FOJ on Aug. 24. In follow-up conversations on the scope of the subpoena, committee staff told the FBI and DOJ that it included information on the circumstances of Strzok's reassignment.

Some problems are not amenable to straightforward solutions, but call for a modicum of guile on the part of the incoming executive to discover those responsible for given problems.

Minor tremors have been detected at the site since the North carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test underground in September, damaging geological structures in the area.

An official of the Korea Meteorological Administration said: "Kilju is a rocky area where natural earthquakes normally do not occur.

LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
, officials said. An NIA team arrested the youth leader named Dhannu Raja, 23, from Patna, and an official close to the development said Raja was suspected of being in constant touch with a few LeT terrorists.

“He was arrested for his involvement in harbouring, providing logistics and other assistance to Shaikh Abdul Naeem, an LeT operative,” said the NIA official. Naeem, 37, was arrested from Lucknow on Tuesday and is being called ‘Headley-II’ for his reconnaissance skills. He is also skilled in planning terror attacks. Pakistani-American David Coleman Headley, who conspired with the LeT in plotting the 2008 Mumbai attack, is currently in jail in the US.

“Raja is a local student leader from Gopalganj, Bihar. He was arrested in Patna on December 1 and was produced before the NIA Special Court in Patna. It granted his transit remand till December 5,” the official said. Raja has been brought to New Delhi and will be produced before NIA Special Court here on or before December 5, the official added. The official also said that Raja was earlier associated with the Congress student wing, National Students Union of India.

What we know so far about the situation in Yemen
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Former Yemeni President former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...

said on Saturday he was ready for a "new page" in relations with the coalition fighting in Yemen. The call came as his supporters managed to control the majority of Sanaa.

So far, here are the recent developments:

-Three mediations between Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the Houthis have failed since yesterday.

-UAE said that Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
has attempted to mediate in order to save Houthis.

-On Saturday, Saleh called on the Arab coalition to halt its operations, promising to open a "new page" with them after two years of fighting, especially after being an ally to the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels.

- Saleh called upon the soldiers and officers who were excluded to return to their camps, in a clear message for escalation and confronting the Houthis.

- In a televised speech broadcast by al-Masirah channel, al-Houthi described the events in Sanaa as a coup and a betrayal.

- Every two or three hours, confrontations against Houthi militia resume in the neighborhoods controlled by Saleh and his followers in the political district and Al Jazaer-Algeria neighborhood.

- The festivities extend to other neighborhoods in the direction of Saleh’s house west of the Kamim market.

- Four hours ago, Saleh’s followers took control of a Houthi headquarter in the political district near Ibn Majid school.

- Since 1 am on Saturday, festivities between the followers of Saleh and al-Houthi have spread to important neighborhoods and they are still ongoing.

- The Houthis stationed four tanks in the streets to intimidate the people in Sanaa, and one of the tanks was headed to the political district but could not enter.

- The general situation in Sanaa is tragic amid fears of a war.

- The majority of the rescue guard and the military police rejected the orders of the Houthi leaders.

- Tribes began to move to bolster the position of Saleh and took control of the South Sanaa gate.

- The slogan of the marches is: ’No more Houthis after today.’

- A front man for al-Houthi militias said that killing former president Ali Abdullah Saleh is now justified

- Three Houthi leaders have been killed since yesterday, in addition to dozens of deaths of individuals. These Houthi leaders are Hamza Yahya al-Mukhtar, Ali Khraim and Abdullah bin Salem Sharif.

- Two Houthi leaders, Mutahar al-Kahlani and Ibrahim al-Wajih, were nabbed
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
during the liberation of two military institutions.

- Saleh’s supporters control the headquarters of the presidency, military sites and important Arab embassies.

- Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie ducked another tomato...
the Arab coalition forces are calling on Yemenis to circumvent the ’intifada’.

- Saleh's forces, with a help from tribes, control ministries of Interior , defense and the north entrance of Sanaa.

Consultations in Yemen to form military council headed by Saleh’s nephew
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] al-Arabiya has learnt from informed sources that the former Yemeni President former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
is holding consultations to form a military council headed by Colonel Tariq Mohammed Abdullah Saleh, the son of his brother, and that it would be announced very soon.

The Conference party which is led by Saleh issued a statement in which it referred to the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. militia attacks in Sana’a areas and called to confront the Houthis.

Saleh also condemned the attacks on the party leaders’ houses by the Houthis during the past days, despite the intervention of rustics to stop it.

He held the Houthis as fully responsible for igniting the war through what he called reckless elements.

He also called on the Yemeni people and rustics to defend themselves against what he called a conspiracy waged by the enemies against the Republic and carried out by members of the Ansar Allah movement.

Fifth Column
New York Times Glorifies Violent Antifa Rioters with Style Guide, Tactical Advice
[BREITBART] The New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

has glorified Antifa
...the armed wing of the Democratic Party...
and its more violent "black bloc" rioters with a style guide, complete with riot gear advice.

In their article, titled "What to Wear to Smash the State," the New York Times detailed the fashion of violent far-left rioters who enjoy "punching Nazis," before advising what to wear during violent protests and riots.

"This mass of solid black descending upon the park in Berkeley, hunting for fascist
...anybody not a leftist...
s, was an intimidating aesthetic. That’s by design," they declared, before quoting an anarchist who claimed that covering your face and dressing in uniform "makes it easier for saboteurs to take the offensive against storefronts, banks and any other material symbols and power centers of capitalism and the state."
“Black does not reveal glass shards as well as other colours, or even patterns,” xe said, “and also therefore does not need to be washed as often. It’s a great saving on time, energy, water and chemicals, and so is better for the environment.”
Despite quoting the anarchist, who openly admitted that the black clothing and covered faces were used to evade coppers while committing crimes, the New York Times attempted to claim that the style is a safety measure to prevent being identified by "white supremacist groups."
“White people in general have difficulty recognizing people wearing black, assuming we are all involved in the theater.”
"The creation of mass anonymity protects practitioners from the threat of post-action doxxing by white supremacist groups, a process by which their identities and contact information, including addresses and places of employment, are publicized," they claimed. "People at home can use this information to harass and threaten. Similarly, police and other agencies have staff devoted to documenting demonstrations, and they work to identify people on film and video. These are among the reasons that some anarchists and anti-fascists advocate smashing cameras at demonstrations." Apparently, the New York Times favors the "two x" spelling of "doxing" typically reserved for people new to the Internet.

In their article, the New York Times continued by giving "practical advice on how to dress for a riot."

"There is more practical advice on how to dress for a riot. One should decide on organic or synthetic gloves before participating in an action: Wool and cotton may allow chemical contaminants, like pepper spray, to absorb, while nylon can melt if you grab something hot, which historically has included some kinds of tear-gas canisters but can include various things on fire," they advised, before adding, "These defensive methods work only if there are enough black-clad others nearby. A single person in all black and multiple face masks is an eye grabber."

Finally, the Times claimed that dressing in black murderous Moslem gear and concealing your face forms an "emotional connection" with other rioters.

"Tactical considerations aside, it’s this emotional connection with other members of the bloc that many practitioners highlight the most in interviews," they proclaimed. "It’s why soldiers and police have uniforms."

Yemen’s rebel alliance appears to fracture as clashes leave dozens dead
[WASHINGTONPOST] Days of fierce festivities here in Yemen’s capital have opened a violent new front in the country’s multisided civil war, with an alliance of Yemeni forces battling a Saudi-led military coalition fracturing ‐ a potentially major shift in the conflict.

The latest festivities have pitted a Yemeni rebel group known as the Houthis against forces loyal to former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
, the former president of Yemen who was ousted five years ago but continues to wield outsized influence.

Dozens of people have been killed in the fighting, which started Wednesday. The festivities started with a standoff at a mosque in Sana, according to officials in the capital. But like most episodes in the war, the exact cause remained murky, and there was immediate suspicion that Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and its allies, including the United Arab Emirates, had played a role in turning Saleh against the Houthis.

In the days before the festivities, Saudi officials had referred obliquely to imminent developments in the war that would improve their fortunes. It was unclear, however, whether they were orchestrating the latest drama, or reacting to rumors from the ground.

Through the week, the fighting roared through southern neighborhoods of Sanaa as mediators tried in vain to defuse the crisis. By early Saturday morning, the battle had widened, and residents of the city were jolted awake by the sound of heavy artillery shelling.

Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
on Saturday as police launched an investigation into yesterday's terror attack on the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI).

Three holy warriors dressed in burqas stormed the ATI hostel situated near Peshawar's University Road, killing nine people and injuring 37 others.

The attack was claimed by the Tehrik-e-Taliban

Pakistain. Both police and military officials said the attackers had been coordinating with handlers based in Afghanistan.

The ATI today released a list of eight students and staff member who bit the dust in the attack. They were identified as: Bilal Ahmad, Amin Jan, Sarzamin, Muhammad Wasim, Abdus Sadiq, Qasim Ali Shah, Bilal Khairul Bashar, Bilal Mohammad Arif and Malik Abdul Waheed.

The list reveals that most of the slain students belonged to far-flung areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Fata and remained in the hostel despite it being a holiday on Friday.

The province mourned the deaths of the students and staff member, as the slain victims were laid to rest today. The funeral of the watchman, Hameed, was held in Peshawar’s Budni area and was attended by a large number of people.

Hamas threatens 'intifada' over US moves on Jerusalem
[DAWN] The Paleostinian movement Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, which controls Gazoo called on Saturday for a new "intifada" if Washington recognises Jerusalem as the capital of Israel or moves its embassy to the disputed city.
They’ve got two choices in terms of an intifada:

1) light off the rockets that now can reach Jerusalem, resulting in Israel smashing Gaza while they are still recovering from the last round, or

2) attack Jews using their personnel in the West Bank and Jerusalem, which means the arrests will come from both the Israelis and the PA police.

But as I recall, they tried both prongs and failed horribly last time. If they do it again, just when they are annoying Egypt greatly by failing to seal the reconciliation with the PA, it won't be just Israel and the PA going after them this time.
Reports in Washington have suggested US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
may on Monday fulfil a campaign pledge on the American embassy, which like all other foreign missions is currently located in the coastal city of Tel Aviv.

"We warn against such a move and call on the Paleostinian people to revive the intifada if these unjust decisions on Jerusalem are adopted," Hamas said in a statement.

Any decision to move its embassy there would be "a flagrant attack on the city by the American administration" and give Israel "a cover for continuing its crime of Judaising the city and emptying it of Paleostinians," it said.

The status of Jerusalem is a key issue in the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict. Both Israelis and Paleostinians claim the city as their capital and previous peace plans have stumbled over debates on whether, and how, to divide illusory sovereignty or oversee holy sites.

Attahullah Khogyani, front man for the provincial governor, said the two killed were intelligence service members and one was director of the Jalalabad intelligence department.

The attack began when a rocket was fired toward a private TV station in Jalalabad, and when security arrived at the scene a blast took place followed later by a third kaboom, said Khogyani.

The maimed include five police, two members of the intelligence service and three civilians.

An Islamic State group affiliate grabbed credit for the attack on a local TV and radio station in Jalalabad in a statement that was also posted on its Aamaq news agency website.

"Fighters of the Islamic State targeted with a rocket the building of Inekas radio station in Jalalabad city" the statement said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the argument, Livia grabbed for Jane's hair to make her point. Jane elbowed her in the face in rebuttal...
Basir Mujahid, front man for the Kabul police chief, said at least three people were maimed after a sticky bomb went off in the Afghan capital Kabul. He said the explosive was planted on a container belonging to security forces.

No group immediately grabbed credit for that attack.

In eastern Pashtun-infested Logar province, unknown button men shot and killed two people including a tribal elder, said Salim Saleh, front man for the provincial governor. The attack took place Friday evening in the Mohammad Agha district of Pashtun-infested Logar, he said.

He said both ware targeted as they exited a mosque and the attackers were able to flee.

The Grand Turk
A Plot of Gold for Erdogan
More on this story from yesterday.
[RUDAW.NET] This week Iranian-Ottoman Turkish gold trader Reza Zarrab went on trial in the United States for a scheme to help Iran evade U.S. sanctions between 2010 and 2015. Along with Ottoman Turkish Halk Bank president Mehmet Hakan Atilla, Mr. Zarrab allegedly used Iranian funds and oil to buy gold in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, then sold the gold in Dubai and forwarded the returns back to Tehran. As part of the operation, Mr. Zarrab bribed top Ottoman Turkish officials, including Turkey’s finance minister and other members of the government’s cabinet.

In a plea bargain to reduce his sentence, Mr. Zarrab agreed to cooperate with American prosecutors, and his resulting testimony is producing interesting revelations. On Thursday, November 30, Mr. Zarrab testified that Ottoman Turkish President Erdogan (who was Prime Minister at the time) personally ordered the scheme to help Iran evade American sanctions and enrich the coffers of Turkey and its officials in the process.

According to the BBC, Mr. Zarrab "said that he was told in 2012 by the then economy minister that Mr Erdogan...had instructed Ottoman Turkish banks to participate in the multi-million dollar scheme" and that "...he paid Zafer Caglayan, then Turkey's economy minister, bribes amounting to more than 50m euros ($59m; £44m) to facilitate deals with Iran."

President Erdogan and other Ottoman Turkish government officials, including former finance minister Caglayan and former Halk Bank president Atilla (who is pleading "not guilty" in the trial) denied the allegations.
No, no! Certainly not!
The Ottoman Turkish government and its controlled media even went further than denying the allegations, accusing the American judge in the case of having links with Fethullah Gülen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
(the reclusive Pennsylvania-based Ottoman Turkish holy man that the Erdogan government insists was behind the July 2016 coup attempt).

Government controlled newspapers in Turkey either sidestepped the substance of the trial in New York, choosing instead to focus on things such as Mr. Zarrab’s fashion preferences for the court room ("casual chic" on Thursday, apparently), or they carried reports such as this one from Daily Sabah:

Officials in Turkey have argued that the case has been turned into a political move against Ankara. Turkey's claims were proved after the judge overseeing the Zarrab case was linked to the Gulenist Terror Group (FETÖ), led by runaway preacher Fetullah Gulen, who has lived in a self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999. The Ottoman Turkish government has accused the group of exploiting the case by illegally obtaining and fabricating evidence, including wiretap records done by now-sacked FETÖ-linked coppers. Ankara says the so-called "evidence" was illegal for a court to use under U.S. law, which requires that any piece of evidence must be obtained through legal means.

Perhaps in another attempt to distract the Ottoman Turkish public from serious allegations of bribery amongst Turkey’s top government officials, prosecutors in Ankara this week also put out an arrest warrant for Graham Fuller, a former vice chairman of the CIA’s National Intelligence Council, for "attempting to overthrow the government of the Republic of Turkey" and "obtaining state information that must be kept secret for political and military espionage purposes," among other charges. Mr. Fuller now joins fellow American academic Henry Barkey, who had an arrest warrant put out for him on similar charges a few months ago.

Home Front: Culture Wars
This Week in Books, December 3, 2017
'Tis the season of gift giving, so I am going to mix this up a little bit, and cover a series of coffee table books.

But first, wife is getting into the season and asked me the other day, "What is your favorite Christmas story?"

Being me, and as quick as a cat knocks over your favorite coffee mug, I replied (George) Washington crossing the Delaware (River). The good news is that extra piece of coal goes towards the next BBQ.

If you read anything written by David Hackett Fischer:

Washington's Crossing
Oxford Press, 2004

Paul Revere's Ride is fantastic, and I am about two-thirds of the way through Albion's Seed and pleasantly surprised by its easy reading about what some would consider a very dry subject. Mr. Fischer is just a fantastic writer and a dedicated researcher, a rare combination.

But for the coffee table:

The Book of Five Rings
Miyamoto Musashi
translated by William Scott Wilson
Shambhala, 2012

This book was recommended to me by a friend I respect; he took an old file, forged it into a blade, and hilted it with a deer antler. Scabbard is hand made from tanned deer hide. Gift to my wife, which I adore both of them for. Let me categorize this as a philosophy book where the topic is martial arts. Miyamoto was a very successful samurai who lived in the 1600s and after retiring, chronicled his thoughts. A person should be into both subjects to really get the most out of Miyamoto's work.

Page 34: (concerning use of the sword)

Use of the Feet: In the carriage of the feet, you should float your toenails a little and step strongly with your heels. In the use of the feet, you should walk as usual, whether the case calls for large, small, quick, or slow strides. Feet that seem to fly, float, or be immobile are, all three, undesirable.
There is something important in this Way called the Yin-Yang Foot, and it is considered essential. The Yin-Yang Foot means never moving just one foot. With Yin-Yang, you step right and left, right and left, whether striking, pulling back, or parrying a blow. I repeat: you should never step with just one foot. You should investigate this thoroughly.

Before you go, "Hey Kansas, swords are Florida Man stories." Consider an improvised sword in self defense, such as a billiard cue. At any rate, it is interesting to be privy to the thoughts of a master.

Samuel Johnson's Insults
Edited by Jack Lynch
Walker Books, 2004

For the most part, a collection of insults during the age of Samuel Johnson, born in 1709, a professional commentator in England. Some words are recognizable, some I wish still were. Mr. Lynch does discreet yet effective work on the etymology of selected words.

Page 58

Nidget [corrupted from nithing or niding. The opprobrious term with which the man was anciently branded who refused to come to the royal standard in times of exigency.] A coward, a dastard.

There was one true English word of greater force than them all, now out of all use; it signifieth no more than abject, baseminded, false-hearted, coward, or nidget. Camden.

The word actually comes from an idiot. In the sixteenth century, speakers detached the n from an and moved it to the beginning of the next word, so an idiot became a nidiot and then a nidget

Rounding out, this Thoughts of Masters in their Trade:

The Lawdog Files
'D. Lawdog'
Castalia House, 2017

This is a collection of yarns by a LEO in the Texas Panhandle. Being in the region, I get the sense of humor and had an absolutely great time reading this book, even the tough recollections. Some stories had me chuckling so loud the kids stopped over to ask me what was so funny. Other stories, well they are real. Lawdog has a very soft and fluid way of writing and the pages seemed to turn themselves; in fact I had to pace myself to not finish the book in one setting.

Page 83

Mesquites have very long thorns, and they grow very low to the ground and very close together. In addition, mesquite thickets are the favored lairs of ticks, no-see-ums, wheel bugs, tarantulas, fire ants, red ants, spiders, and pasty-faced men with chainsaws. Not to mention cactus, jumping-getcha, devil's claw, and other antisocial plants also like thickets.

The wind doesn't ever seem to get into the mesquite thickets, but the humidity does. And the heat. And here's our critter, in his black no-dye tissue-thin batik cotton drawstring drawers and his politically correct black hemp guayabera shirt and his black cordura sandals.

Anyhoo, Bubba and I sat there juggling a can of Deep Woods Off for about twenty minutes before hearing this blood-curdling yodel, and we saw Todd the Revolutionary, black bandanna pulled up bandit-style over his lower face, burst forth from the mesquite in a buzzing gray cloud and sprint for the open driver's door of the Mustang, ululating every step of the way.

We watched him cover the hundred or so feet at a dead sprint, and then Bubba casually reached over and pushed the door closed, causing Young Toddy to ricochet off the closed door and into the dust, much to the delight of the mosquitos.

I waved the car keys at him. I supposed I needed to read the Anarchist Handbook because this was apparently a gross violation of the rules of the game. All five foot, six inches, 130 pounds of halitosis and macrobiotic methane jumped to his feet, struck a bee-yoo-ti-ful tai chi stance, and proclaimed, "It took six LAPD pigs to take me to jail. I'm not afraid of you!"

*snort*

He went to jail.

The book is a great read, like watching a fantastic knuckleball pitcher having the game of his life.

This Week in Emergency Preparedness

Take a commercial break today, or right now, and go make sure your water pipe valves close, are closed, and open back up. Add it to the Daylight Savings Day house-check of smoke detectors and battery check of electronic safes and such, especially if you have water that is tough on the plumbing. I shit you not, water out here from a drippy faucet will make a stalactite. Those working valves have saved my ass many a time.

For those of you who get cold, vehicles should be winterized at this point. Wiper fluid filled, emergency kit has a blanket, battery inspected and terminals cleaned, de-icer and scraper, all that good stuff. Anyone know of something to drink that has a very low freezing point which I can throw in the car? Other than schnapps. Which I absolutely do not have in the car next to the jumper cables.

Links to books are in the book title and go to Amazon. Title link also goes to Amazon, but to re-usable heat pads. After use, throw them in a pot of boiling water to re-charge them, very handy.

#2  25 years ago I read similar about checking home water shutoff valves. I tested my main valve, it failed immediately. It wouldn't shut off the supply and started leaking a fair amount around the handle that nothing could stop. I did this on a weekday at 0900, so I had the time to track down a plumber, contact the city water service & do all necessary to get the bad valve out and a good valve in. Additional advice: Everytime you leave your house overnight or longer, shut the main valve off. That way makes it less likely you will, say, return home and find your basement turned into a swimming pool while you were away. That actually happened to several families I knew.

I'm not talking some random pipe on Dungeon Level III requiring a saving throw, it was easily inspected and look fine, other than the baby kraken nested inside. #4  I tested my main valve, it failed immediately. It wouldn't shut off the supply and started leaking a fair amount around the handle that nothing could stop.

The way they build houses in SoCal, everybody should check for this. The handle on my valve was so rusty it was about to fall off. Cheap, third rate parts. The builder cut corners in every legal way and some that probably weren't. The main water valve still worked though. I learned that when the valve on the pipe that leads into the toilet broke the first time I tried it. But I had them both fixed.

#5  Still enjoying 'Horse Soldiers'. Thank you.

Anyone know of something to drink that has a very low freezing point which I can throw in the car?

In my early Chicago sub-arctic winter years I carried fortified wines and/or Orange Vodka. Either of which would work well in the windshield washer to breakup ice spray or make slushies with a cup full of snow.
Now it's more 'near beer' which may turn to a slushie but does not freeze and burst, yet.

#6  I once accidentally left a carton of Bud out in the car on a subzero night. Brought it in, beer appeared to be liquid somehow. I popped one open & was delighted to see the beer flash freeze on the sudden change in pressure in the bottle. The icy slush slowly oozed out of the bottle. While the bottle didn't break, I don't know. The rest of the beer I carefully set down on the kitchen floor to slowly warm it. No bottles broke.

#7  --- My car emergency kit includes a polyester filled sleeping bag rather than a blanket, works better to keep you warm.
--- I always carry a small bottle of propane, one of those cheap screw-on camping propane burners, a metal camping pot with lid and several cheap butane lighters -- all this stuff is lightweight, cheap and not bulky and will not freeze above about -45 deg F. You can melt snow or ice this way, and even heat up the inside of your vehicle if you take great care to allow the fumes to exhaust & new O2 to get in - otherwise fumes and low O2 can kill in confined spaces.
I once used this equipment to brew a desperately needed cup of real coffee on the shoulder of a Texas highway in the middle of nowhere. Just dumped the ground coffee in the pot of boiling water & drank the "supernatant" as we used to say in chemistry class. Best coffee I ever had!

#8  Cheap, third rate parts. Years ago my electric service panel caught on fire when I reset a tripped circuit breaker. Turned out corrosion accumulated over decades had built up on the aluminum buss bar to which the ends of the circuit breakers are attached. This was hardly visible. Somehow a spark created by resetting the circuit breaker ignited either/or the plastic of the circuit breaker or the aluminum tabs of the buss bar -- all hidden under the other parts. Fortunately I stopped the fire by quickly switching off the main breakers at the top of the panel. Discussed this later with an electrician. He said this only happens with aluminum buss bars & not with copper ones. Sometimes fires would start spontaneously in the panels. Copper costs $5 or $10 more for the average home service panel.

#9  Favorite Christmas book, below review from Amazon

Using glowing, hypnotic images and a funny, provocative text, the narrator relives his father's most amazing childhood Christmas. A moody young boy living with his aunt on an island, "Red" Breathed sees himself as the "Red Ranger from Mars", his hero from the movie serials, and cannot picture life without the gift of a Red Ranger bicycle. Red is far too "swanky a human being" to believe in Santa Claus, but nevertheless he pays a visit to the aged island hermit, Lord Sander Clos, rumored to be the legendary man himself, now living in lonely, joyless retirement. This meeting triggers an emotional response within the self-absorbed Red and leads to the most remarkable bicycle ever delivered on Christmas morning. This book represents Berkeley Breathed at the top of his form.

Zim president calls for tech-savvy graduates
[HERALD.CO.ZW] President Emmerson Mnangagwa says his Government is preparing for a massive industrialisation and modernisation of the economy underpinned by a new thinking in wealth creation.

The Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zim-bob-we Defence Forces said this in an acceptance speech at his installation as Second Chancellor of Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) in Chinhoyi yesterday.

He said Zim-bob-we, with an empowered young population armed with critical skills in innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity, should compete in the global village.

The market, he said, yearned for finished products as technological advancement now anchors economic development.

"Globalisation has increased competition in the world and Zim-bob-we has to continue to produce quality graduates in the education sector if we are to keep pace and remain relevant in the economic development race," said President Mnangagwa.

"The need to provide the market with finished products cannot be overemphasised as the world has grown fiercely competitive since technological advancement has become synonymous with economic development."

Cde Mnangagwa said there was need to keep up with global developments and prepare young people to face the challenges and jealously guard natural resources.

"Chinhoyi University of Technology indeed is a young and vibrant institution favoured with a special mandate to lead industrial development and the nurturing of entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity," he said.

"These objectives are in tandem with our new thrust as Government to empower our young people with critical skills that will drive industrialisation and modernisation of the economy and inculcate a new thinking in wealth creation, innovation and entrepreneurship."

#2  Feed well the parents of the next generation, and their children might be able to absorb the education needed to become tech savvy. The current generation has been busy hunting beetles and grubs to feed their families, and will not be able to make the transition. But the odds are that their children, harmed as their development has been by malnutrition and outright starvation in the critical early stages of brain development, will be considerably less than their genetic potential, as demonstrated by the North Koreans. So we are talking the granchild generation.

On the other hand, feed the current generation well while teaching them to farm and herd, providing them with land, tools, fertilizers, pesticides, seeds, and breeding stock... and by harvest time it will all have been eaten by a population that has learnt the hardest way not to trust the government.

So good luck with that, guys.

Quebec court suspends part of contentious face veil ban
[Al Jazeera] A Canadian court has suspended part of a controversial law that bans face coverings in the province of Quebec.

The Superior Court of Quebec issued a stay on Friday against Bill 62, a law passed in the Quebec legislature in October that bars individuals from covering their faces when they receive or give public services.

The court suspended Section 10 of the law, which forces individuals to uncover their faces to receive a range of services, including riding a public bus or seeing a doctor.

The ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed last month by the National Council of Canadian Moslems, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) and Warda Naili, a Moslem woman who wears a full-face veil, also known as a niqab.

The legal challenge argued that Bill 62 violates the constitutional rights of Moslem women, who will now have to remove their religious coverings to receive basic services.

The groups also said the law will encourage xenophobia, harassment and discrimination.

"We're delighted that the Quebec Superior Court has suspended the Niqab ban - a law that tries to dictate to women what they can and cannot wear," the CCLA said in a statement on its website.

"This is a huge victory but there's still work to be done," the group added.

"The case will move forward on the merits and we need your support."

Quebec government 'not unsatisfied'
The Quebec government has justified Bill 62, formally known as "an act to foster adherence to state religious neutrality", as part of an effort to ensure equal rights between citizens.

Speaking to news hounds, Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said he was "not unsatisfied" with the court's ruling.

"I'm not unsatisfied with the judgment because there's no mention of a violation of the charters [of rights] or any major constitutional problem," he said, according to CBC News.

Sisi criticised over 'brute force' strategy in Sinai
No doubt.
[Al Jazeera] Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi gave his security forces a three-month deadline to restore "security and stability" to the country's northern Sinai province, but experts say his strategy has already caused more damage to the region and its residents.

After the latest string of attacks, Sisi on Wednesday reiterated his pledge to restore security in a televised appearance, saying his government would use "brute force" against gangs in the area.

On November 24, more than 305 people were killed in a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Bir al-Abed, a small town in Sinai, shortly after Friday prayers. According to local media reports, 120 others were maimed in the attack, which took place about 40km west of El Arish, the province's capital.

In response, the Egyptian military launched air attacks on targets in mountainous areas surrounding Bir al-Abed hours after the attack.

Sinai researcher and writer Mohannad Sabry said that signs of Sisi's "brute force" strategy already began to appear last week, when police and military forces began raiding the villages and residential clusters near the site of the attack.

"Locals have estimated that such raids detained dozens of people, mainly displaced over the past years from the areas of Sheikh Zuwayyed and Rafah," he told Al Jazeera.

According to Sabry, the detainees included several people who were leading a community effort to collect donations for the victims of the latest attack.

The Sinai Peninsula, a volatile desert region, is split into two governorates - north and south - and has been a hotbed for various gangs.

North Korea's new ICBM likely broke up upon re-entry, US official says
[CNN] An intercontinental ballistic missile that North Korea said could reach the "whole" mainland of the United States likely broke up upon re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, a US official said Saturday.

North Korea on Tuesday broke a two-month lull in weapons testing. It launched an advanced intercontinental ballistic missile, the Hwasong-15, that state-controlled media described as the "most powerful ICBM" carrying a "super-large heavy warhead" to unprecedented heights of almost 4,500 kilometers (2,800 miles).

Technical analysis of the missile flight is still ongoing but the US official said "the North Koreans had problems with re-entry. "

Coupled with the rogue regime's need to master missile guidance and targeting, the re-entry failure underscores the challenges facing the country's weapons program, according to the official.

Still, the ability of the new missile to fly higher and longer than others in the past signals the program's intent to develop weapons capable of attacking the US.

While some US military officials have referred to the missile launched Tuesday as a "KN 22" -- a designation signaling the launch involves a new type of ICBM -- other officials urge caution in categorizing the missile.

#1  1) Call it a rumor, but someone* said the Nork missiles contained explosives designed to break them up to keep the Japanese from recovering them.

2) An EMP weapon doesn't need to do much in the way of re-entry and is less fussy about guidance.

ZNA boss unpacks Operation Restore Legacy
[HERALD.CO.ZW] Zim-bob-we National Army (ZNA) Commander Lieutenant-General Philip Valerio Sibanda says corrupt Government officials are partly to blame for the socio-economic problems facing the country.

Speaking at a passing out parade for 590 recruits at 53 Infantry Battalion in Kwekwe yesterday, Lt-Gen Sibanda said the recent military action that ushered in a new political dispensation was meant to weed out corrupt elements who had captured the State.

He said while Zim-bob-we had endured the impact of illegal sanctions imposed by the West and America, corruption had worsened the situation.

"Some corrupt members of our Government had digressed from their core mandate of serving the people to robbing the people through corruption and fiscal indiscipline, taking advantage of their proximity to the former Head of State, Cde Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case. ," said Lt-Gen Sibanda.

"These acts of indiscipline aimed at enriching individuals were causing a lot of social and economic problems in the country and the defence forces had to intervene in order to restore normality in the country," Lt-Gen Sibanda said.

As a result of the ZDF intervention, he said, the country was going through a political transition following the resignation of the former President.

The new President, Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa, was sworn-in as Head of State and and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zim-bob-we Defence Forces last week.

President Mnangagwa has already declared zero tolerance on corruption and warned that tough measures will be taken on those who indulge in the vice.

Disbelievers want to sabotage peace of Muslim Ummah by hatching anti-Islam conspiracies: Iqbal
[DAWN] Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Saturday claimed that Pakistain successfully foiled an "international conspiracy" to ignite sectarian violence in the country.

While addressing a conference in Narowal Iqbal said that "disbelievers" want to sabotage peace of the Moslem Ummah by hatching anti-Islam conspiracies.

He was of the view that international lobbies, including India, never want to see Pakistain as a politically and economically stable country, for which they keep hatching conspiracies to ignite religious and sectarian violence in Pakistain.

"Pakistain has successfully launched China-Pakistain Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, prompting India to hatch conspiracies to spoil the project and the ongoing development," the minister said.

Ahsan Iqbal stressed the need for unity in the Moslem Ummah to foil the international anti-Islam conspiracies, saying it was high time for the "Moslem world to forge unity among its ranks and shun their differences for the glory of Islam".

He expressed complete solidarity with the oppressed people of occupied Jammu and Kashmire, Myanmar, and Paleostine.

Iqbal said Islam presents a global system of foolproof security and peace, adding that forces of Evil had no religion, as every religion of the world gives the lessons of love, peace and respect for humanity. "The present wave of terrorism was a conspiracy against the Moslem Ummah."

The interior minister also urged the religious scholars to play their role in promoting religious and sectarian harmony, brotherhood, unity, faith, and peace in society.

Twin suicide bombings kill at least 13 in Nigeria
[DAWN] At least 13 people were killed and more than 50 maimed in a dual suicide kaboom at a busy morning market in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
on Saturday, local sources said.

The attacks occurred in the town of Biu, about 185 kilometres (115 miles) south of the Borno State capital, Maiduguri, which has been at the epicentre of Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
's insurgency.

"Twojacket wallah'> exploding trollop female suicide bombers infiltrated and gained entry into Biu," a local police front man said.

"One of the bombers detonated an improvised bomb (IED) strapped to her body within Biu's main market, while the other one detonated outside the market square," the front man said.

The police said 13 people were killed, while a front man for a local civilian militia Ibrahim Saidu Maniya said the corpse count was as high as 18.

No one has grabbed credit for the attack, but the Boko Haram group, led by Abubakar Shekau
... the lunatic leader of Boko Haram who has been reported dead at least eleven times, pledged his body and soul to ISIS, told his fighters to hang it up once or twice, and been fired by the Caliph and refused to step down ...
, has previously used women and adolescent suicide bombers to carry out attacks in the area.

"They were powerful blasts which were heard all over the town," Biu resident Ahmad Babagana, who lost a friend in the attack, told AFP.

"I heard huge blasts that came in succession and saw plumes of black smoke coming from the direction of the market," said another resident, Zakari Tiko. "I instantly knew the market had been attacked," Tiko said.

Biu and neighbouring villages have been repeatedly hit by suicide and kabooms blamed on Boko Haram over the last eight years. In August 2015, a suicide bomber killed at least 50 people at a market in a nearby village.

Lebanese TV: Israel used Jericho missiles in Syria, one was downed by Russians
[IsraelTimes] Network affiliated with Hezbollah cites Russian sources in claiming Pantsir-S1 air defense system shot down warhead in alleged Israeli strike

A Lebanese news network affiliated with the Hezbollah terror group claimed Israel fired Jericho 1 surface-to-surface missiles to strike a military target in Syria on Friday night, and that one of the missiles was downed by Russian air defense systems.

Al-Mayadeen television, citing unnamed Russian sources, said Israel launched two missiles in the attack. One was reportedly downed by a Russian Pantsir-S1, which had been deployed to neutralize any possible threats to Russian forces operating throughout Syria.

Israel has not commented on the alleged strike in Syria, which multiple Arab media outlets have claimed targeted an Iranian military base near the Syrian city of al-Qiswa, southwest of Damascus.

Some media outlets affiliated with the Assad regime and Hezbollah initially reported that Israeli warplanes targeted an ammunition bunker belonging to the Syrian army. But other media outlets, widely quoted in Hebrew media on Saturday evening, reported that the target was a military base that Iran is building in the area, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Israeli border, and that loud kabooms were heard after the attack.

Some reports said Israel fired five missiles. Syrian state media said its air defenses intercepted at least two Israeli missiles fired at a government "military position" in Damascus province, but that the attack still caused damage.

According to reports on Leb’s al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
TV and the Saudi-owned al-Arabiya network, accounts on the Telegram messaging app tied to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps have reported 12 Iranian fatalities in the strike.

There has been no official confirmation of fatalities by either Syrian or Iranian authorities.

Israel has long warned that Iran is trying to establish a permanent presence in Syria as part of its efforts to control a land corridor from Iran through to the Mediterranean Sea as it attempts to expand its influence across the Middle East.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said often that Israel will not allow Iran to establish a permanent presence in Syria, and was reported last week to have sent a warning to this effect via a third party to Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
CNN adds:
The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Syria. In November, the Israeli military accused Syria of violating the 1974 ceasefire agreement by "conducting construction work" in the northern part of the Golan Demilitarized Zone. Israel also shot down a reconnaissance drone it believed was operated by Syria.

Hours after the reported strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a warning to Iran about troops in Syria.

In a video tweet published Saturday night, Netanyahu said, "I will reiterate the policy of Israel: We will not allow a regime that is determined to destroy the Jewish nation to acquire a nuclear weapon. We will not allow this regime to establish a military presence in Syria, as its declared purpose, for destroying our state."
And from Ynet:
According to foreign sources, the Jericho 1 missile has been in Israel's arsenal for decades, since the 1960s, but there have so far been no reports of such a missile being used in operational settings.
According to the Jerusalem Post’s sources, it wasn’t surface-to-surface missiles:
According to foreign media reports, the Israeli fire was carried out from Lebanese airspace. The reports said that in response anti aircraft missiles were fired on the plane.
Fog o’war added to fog o’Arab imaginations. And Israel, as usual, isn’t telling.

Houthis: Saleh's overture to Saudi 'a coup'
[Al Jazeera] Yemen's former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...

rebels, in what the fighters called "a coup" against their fragile alliance with the ousted president.

Saleh made the comments on Saturday, as deadly infighting between forces loyal to him and Houthi rebels continued for a fourth day.

The former allies have been fighting the Saudi-led coalition for control of the country since March 2015, when Riyadh and several other Arab Sunni states intervened to reinstate the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

In October, the Saudi-led coalition bombing Yemen imposed a total blockade on the impoverished country after a rebel missile was shot down near Riyadh.

Last week, amid international pressure over the suffering of millions of Yemenis, some humanitarian aid was allowed to enter Yemen.

"I call on our brothers in neighbouring countries ... to stop their aggression and lift the blockade ... and we will turn the page," Saleh said in a televised speech on Saturday.

"We vow to our brothers and neighbours that, after a ceasefire is in place and the blockade is lifted ... we will hold dialogue directly through the legitimate authority represented by our parliament," added Saleh.

A Houthi front man was quick to denounce Saleh's comments, accusing the former president of staging a "coup".

"Saleh's speech is a coup against our alliance and partnership ... and exposed the deception of those who claim to stand against aggression," the front man said in a statement, carried by the rebels' Al Masirah TV.

Also responding to Saleh's speech, Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi stressed the need for dialogue and called on the former president to "be more mature".

However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
in a statement, Saleh's General People's Congress (GPC) ordered their supporters to "defend their homeland, their revolution, and their unity".

Iraq
We are in new era, referendum is behind us, says Iraqi Kurdish PM
[PRESSTV] Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s prime minister says the issue of a unilateral independence referendum is over, adding that the region respects a recent top court ruling that bans any secession from the mainland.

"With regards to the referendum, we are in a new era, and this issue is over and we have made our position in the Kurdistan Regional Government clear," Nechirvan Barzani said in a joint presser with French President Emmanuel Macron in Gay Paree on Saturday.

He further reaffirmed the region’s "respect for Iraqi federal court ruling" that declared a secession referendum unconstitutional.

On November 20, Iraq’s Supreme Federal Court, which is responsible for settling disputes between the central government in Baghdad and the country’s regions, announced it had made a "decision to consider the Kurdish region’s referendum unconstitutional and this ruling is final."

It also decided to annul "all the consequences and results" of the plebiscite that was held on September 25 in defiance of strong objection from both Baghdad and Iraq’s neighbors, particularly Iran and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
The plebiscite sparked tensions between the KRG and Baghdad, with the Iraqi army conducting a military campaign to retake the areas overrun by Kurdish snuffies in the course of the fight against the ISIS terrorist group.

Following the vote, Baghdad imposed a ban on direct international flights to the Kurdish region and called for a halt to its independent crude oil sales.

UAE: Qatar tried to mediate in Yemen to save Houthis

He continued: "The Sanaa and Yemen

uprising is an awakening from the nightmare of drifting behind the shady sectarian callings that are against the interests of the Yemeni people."

A dangerous document recently re-circulated revealing the truth of the Qatari connection and support to the Houthis, through a letter by Badr al-Din al-Houthi, the father of Hussein and Abdul Malik, addressed to Qatar's former Emir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, praising his generous support alongside that of Iran, which enabled them, according to him, to claim victory.

The Houthi leader promised the Emir of Qatar to continue the battle.

Qatar is the only country to have rescued the Houthi militias after the government forces were about to crush them. The former Emir of Qatar, under the guidance of Iran, was the first mediator to settle the conflict after the death of Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi in the third war in June 2006.

[PRESSTV] A senior Iranian official says enemies' divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
plots can only be thwarted through unity and coherence in the Moslem world.

Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
, Shiaphobia and Iranophobia are top on the agenda of a Western media campaign seeking to depict a violent image of Islam and Moslems to the world, Ali Akbar Velayati, senior advisor to Fearless Leader of the Islamic Revolution
...Iran's doddering head theocrat...
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
...the successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the actual dictator of Iran...
on international affairs, said on Saturday.

He added that the West has waged proxy wars, supported terrorist, myrmidon and Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
groups such as ISIS and hatched plots to sow discord among, weaken and break up Moslem countries and spread instability.

ISIS murderous Moslems have committed every type of crime against Moslems in the region and carried out measures in the name of Islam to serve the interests of arrogant powers and enemies of Moslems, the senior Iranian official emphasized.
Velayati said enemies' efforts to "turn the Zionist-Islamic battle into Islamic-Islamic confrontation" in order to guarantee the Israeli regime's security have so far failed through unity in the Moslem world and efforts by the anti-Israeli resistance front.

He added that the enemies' vicious plots would be foiled in the future and Moslem countries would stand up to any move aimed at creating discord and division.

Velayati noted the Islamic Theocratic Republic's core policy has always been to attach importance to safeguarding unity and reconciliation among religions and countering any divisive plans.

Yemen’s Saleh says ‘citizens have revolted against Houthi aggression’
ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Yemen's former President Ali Abdallah Saleh spoke on Saturday in a live TV address to slam the Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
militia amid fierce battles between Saleh loyalists and the Iran-backed militia in the capital Sanaa.

Saleh called for a joint ceasefire to be agreed on by his loyalists and the Houthi militia, after festivities entered their fourth day and hae resulted in the deaths of at least 80 people.

"The people have revolted against Houthi aggression," he said.

Saleh urged an end to "militia rule on Yemeni land," adding that Houthis had continued their "provactive acts against Yemeni citizens."

He also demanded that armed Yemeni forces refrain from taking any orders from the Houthi militia, and called for "opening a new page with neighboring countries."

Earlier, Saleh's General People's Congress (GPC) party, accused the Houthis of failing to honor the truce and said in a statement on its website that the Houthis bear responsibility for dragging the country into a civil war.

It also called on supporters, including tribal fighters, to "defend themselves, their country, their revolution and their republic..."

The GPC appealed to the army and security forces to remain neutral in the conflict.

The Houthis' Ansarullah group, in a statement issued on its Twitter account, described the festivities as "regrettable."
"It is happening in coordination with it," referring to the Saudi-led coalition.

The fighting began on Wednesday when Saleh's GPC party accused the Houthis of breaking into the city's main mosque complex and firing RPGs and grenades.

Is Mali France's Afghanistan?
[War on the Rocks] In a recent editorial in Le Monde, French journalist Christophe Ayad draws disturbing parallels between the French military operations in Mali — which will reach their five-year mark in January — and America’s involvement in Afghanistan. At first glance the comparison is compelling, and in some important ways, accurate. Yet these two interventions present some fundamental differences that make the Afghanistan case likely more intractable than Mali’s, and give reason for optimism in France.

Ayad’s argument relates to the course of the wars and the apparent bind in which the American and French militaries now find themselves. Ayad observes that in both cases a lightning offensive gave way to a grinding counter-insurgency. In neither case can one now discern an alternative to continuing indefinitely to pay in blood and treasure to prop up governments that frequently act in ways contrary to good sense or good strategy. One can, in fact, blame those governments, as many critics do, but Ayad insists on Western militaries’ fundamental inability to do what they’re being asked to do in countries like Afghanistan and Mali.

They have, he argues, neither “the mandate, the vocation, nor, finally, the qualifications for reconstructing the States in which they are intervening.” They “no longer know what to do” and have to choose between hunkering down in bunkers to prevent useless losses while becoming an army of occupation, or conducting raids to intimidate the enemy but risk accidents and ambushes like that which took the life lives of four American soldiers in Niger in October. Winning “hearts and minds” through civil-military engagements is supposed to be a third option, but, Ayad asserts, this is not really the job of soldiers, “as we saw in Afghanistan, where dozens of billions of dollars were spent for nothing.”

Ex-VP Mphoko in dramatic return
[HERALD.CO.ZW] Former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko who returned to Zim-bob-we from Botswana yesterday caused a dramatic 45-minute spectacle at the Plumtree Border Post as he tried to evade the media.

Mr Mphoko had been holed up in Botswana since the Zim-bob-we Defence Forces (ZDF) launched Operation Restore Legacy targeting criminal elements around former President Cde Bob Muggsy Mugabe
Nonagenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case. Dumped in November 2017 when the Missus decided she wanted to be president, and opposed heer might against Crocodile Mnangawa Important safety tip: If your opponent goes by the name Crocodile andf your title is Shopper in Chief let him win....
, who are largely accused of causing instability in both Government and ZANU-PF.

A key member of the G40 cabal, Mr Mphoko left Zim-bob-we on an official visit to Japan on November 14, a day before the army launched the operation.

He did not return to Zim-bob-we but instead flew to Botswana, where he has been a guest of the government.

Highly placed sources said the Botswana government had given him up to December 1 to leave their country and return to Zim-bob-we, but the former VP had been reluctant to do so fearing arrest for corruption-related crimes.

The former VP had been living in a State residence in Gaborone and returned home after reaching out to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and getting the necessary assurances that he was free to come back to Zim-bob-we.

Clad in a white shirt, Mr Mphoko and his family arrived at the Zim-bob-wean side of the border at 1:15pm aboard a Zim-bob-we Department of Immigration minibus accompanied by Botswana immigration officials.

Iraq
VP Maliki slams call from French President Macron on Baghdad to disband Hashd al-Shaabi
[RUDAW.NET] Iraq’s Vice President Nouri al-Maliki strongly criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s call on Baghdad for disbanding Shiite militia groups, chief among them Iran-backed Hashd al-Shaabi, saying Macron should not "meddle" in internal affairs of Iraq.

Maliki, who still wields immense power in Iraq, slammed Macron saying "La Belle France’s constitution enshrines that they should not meddle in the world countries’ affairs. But Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly meddled in Iraq’s internal affairs calling for the dismantling of a formal legal institution, the Hashd al-Shabai."

In a joint presser with Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani, French President Macron said that he had told the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on October 5 that Hashd al-Shaabi and other militias in Iraq must be disbanded.

"When Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi visited Gay Paree, we declared that all the militias of the Iraqi government must be disbanded and that no militia must stay including the Hashd al-Shaabi," Macron said, making reference to PM Abadi’s visit to La Belle France, according to the official Kurdish translation.

Maliki, who is also head of the State of Law bloc in the Iraqi parliament, said "we do not want any country to impose its will on the Iraqi government and the brave Iraqi nation."

The former Iraqi premier also urged all the political parties of Iraq to be united and share a common stance in the face of any external "meddling".

In October, remarks by the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that called on Iranian militia within the Hashd al-Shaabi to "go home" sparked outrage among Iraqi officials.

Iraqi forces supported by the Hashd al-Shaabi entered deadly festivities against the Kurdish Peshmerga for over a week in October when they advanced on Kurdish-held territories in the disputed or Kurdistani areas claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad including the oil-rich Kirkuk and Tuz Khurmatu.

The Iraqi parliament in November 2016 recognized the Hashd al-Shaabi as an official force with similar rights as the regular army.

50 percent of Yezidis abducted by ISIS still remain under captivity
[RUDAW.NET] Nearly half of Yezidis kidnapped by ISIS in August 2014 from Shingal and its surrounding areas are still being held captive or their fates remain unknown, according to the latest data released by the Kurdish ministry of religious affairs.

From August 3, 2014 until December 1, 2017, of 6,417 Yezidis kidnapped by ISIS, only 3,207 of them have been rescued or have escaped, Khairi Bozani, General Manager of Yezidis Affairs in the KRG’s Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs told Rudaw, explaining that 3,210 are still under the group’s captivity, of which 1,377 are women, 335 men, 904 female children and 831 male children.

According to the latest figures, an estimated 1,293 Yezidis have been killed since August 3, 2014, the first day of ISIS’s brutal attacks on the Shingal region.

The number of children who lost a parent is 2,745, of which 1,759 have lost their fathers, 407 lost mothers and 389 lost both parents.

Some 47 mass graves containing the bodies of Yezidis were discovered and 68 religious shrines were blown up.

An investigation into mass graves conducted by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named and announced in August 2016 concluded that between 5,200 and 15,000 people are buried in 72 mass graves in territory the murderous Moslems formerly controlled.

Last month, Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council announced it would open a "special judicial body to investigate the terrorist crimes committed against Yezidis."

The totality of the atrocities committed against Yezidis by ISIS is not yet completely quantifiable. Many mass graves in and near Shingal have yet to be exhumed, however, Kurdish authorities in Duhok use satellite imagery to identify many believed sites.

As many as 100,000 Yezidis have migrated abroad since August 2014, according to the figure.

Arab Coalition announces support for Yemeni uprising against Houthis
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Arab coalition has made a statement on Saturday amidst the ongoing fierce festivities in Sanaa.

The coalition said it is determined that it has maintained its position on all Yemeni ground.

The coalition also said that it recognizes the noble members of the the Yemeni General People’s Congress (GPC), the GPC’s leadership and the Yemeni people who were forced to remain under Houthi-Iranian control.

Also, the coalition recognizes that these noble individuals have endured numerous murder threats, torture, bombings and seizure of public and private property.

Similarly, the coalition noted that their brothers in the alliance towards restoring legitimacy in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
was keen that the restoration of their initiative and their allegiance to the Yemeni people ‐ and the Yemeni people’s stand in the circumstances ‐ would rid Yemen of the Iranian sectarian terrorist militia's evils.
