Commissioner Suggests U.N. Send Troops To Fight ‘Quiet Genocide' Of Gun Violence In Chicago
HT SCC
Some politicians in the past have recommended deploying the National Guard to help Chicago quell gun violence, but Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin went even further on Thursday, suggesting the United Nations perhaps send in peacekeepers in the face of what he called a "quiet genocide."

Boykin was traveling to New York to meet with Oscar Fernandez-Taranco of Argentina, the U.N. Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Support, to seek international help with "horrific levels of shootings" and other violent crime in West Side and South Side communities.

"I'm hoping to appeal to the U.N. to actually come to Chicago and meet with victims of violence, and maybe even possibly help out in terms of peacekeeping efforts, because I think it’s so critical for us to make sure that these neighborhoods are safe," Boykin said at O'Hare International Airport on Thursday.

Boykin said leaders in Chicago and Cook County have failed to protect many communities from violent crime.

"There is a quiet genocide taking place in too many of our communities. Eighty percent of those who are being killed by gun violence are African American, and often killed at the hands of another African American," he said. "So we must protect these population groups, and that's what the United Nations does. They're a peacekeeping force. They know all about keeping the peace, and so we';re hopeful that they'll hear our appeal."

Boykin said Chicago must "utilize every avenue" available to protect its people from gun violence, possibly including U.N. peacekeepers.

"They've been able to help in places like Africa and abroad, where they've sent troops in and sent forces in to help protect minority and vulnerable populations, and so quite frankly I think the same can be said for here in Chicago," Boykin said. "I'm talking about physical security. I'm also talking about maybe suggestions for what we can do in Chicago to help protect our minority populations. We're being, again, decimated by the violence that we see here in Chicago. I mean this is really a genocide, and we have to do something to stop it."
He doesn't get out or read the Burg much. Idiot

#11  CrazyFool : the Liberia mission hasn't hurt anybody, and the trickle-down from the troop's pay helped boost the local economy.
I'm not saying that the deployment was necessary or well-implemented, or that the economic boost was an efficient use of money (hardly); just that it did help.
It helped that the UN troops weren't getting shot at, and that the locals had some stake in peace.

An exception that tests the rule...

In Chicago? They'd be hunkered down in bunkers. And the local gangs would be acquiring (probably from the UN troops) all sorts of fun equipment.

Putin thanks Trump for intelligence that prevented St Petersburg terror attack
Follow up to this story from yesterday.
[Telegraph] Russian President Vladimir Putin called US President Donald Trump on Sunday to thank the Central Intelligence Agency for relaying information that lead to the arrest of several individuals since Friday suspected of plotting terrorist attacks in St. Petersburg.

According to the Kremlin, the information shared by the CIA “helped to track, identify and detain a group of terrorists preparing to set off explosions in St. Petersburg’s Kazan Cathedral, as well as in other public areas,” Interfax news agency reported.

Mr Putin asked Mr Trump to relay his thanks to the director of the CIA and the intelligence officers who first received the information.

Over the past several days, authorities in St. Petersburg have detained five individuals as part of a terrorism investigation. On Friday, authorities arrested Yevgeny Yefimov, who told a court that he has illegally manufactured explosives and intended to detonate them in Kazan Cathedral on Dec. 17.

An associate of Yefimov’s was detained on Saturday in connection to the plot.

Three more were arrested on Sunday as part of the investigation. They have been identified in the Russian press as Shamil Omargadzhiyev of Russia’s Dagestan region, Alishkhan Esmurziyev of Russia’s Ingushetia region, and Firuz Kalavurov, a citizen of neighboring Tajikistan.

The Federal Security Service (FSB) on Friday also said it had arrested seven members of an Islamic State cell. The agency made a point in its statement of highlighting that the cell was being directed from abroad via Telegram, a popular encrypted messaging app — leading some to speculate the arrests could be used as a pretence to crack down on the application’s use.

Earlier this year, in April, a suicide bomber attacked the St. Petersburg metro. A second, unexploded device was found in a metro station in another part of the city. The attacks highlighted a growing threat of terrorism in Russia, as many Russian-speaking Islamic State fighters began to try to return home from the battlefields of Syria.

Mr Putin, according to the Kremlin, told Mr Trump that Russia’s security services would “undoubtedly and without delay” share information pertaining to terrorist threats against the U.S. and its citizens in the future.

#3  Purely speculation on my part, but:

I wonder if Putin is trolling the CIA here. Given the agency's focus on overthrowing Trump and their seeming ineffectiveness in other matters, I'm skeptical of their role in this.

#4  Putin knows this will enrage the Democrats here. He is their prime resource for money among many seeking to weaken this country. The Democrats have and are losing traditional revenue sources. Going further left to the people wanting and getting handouts are the poorest financial donors. Hillary turned to Putin for money and in turn she helped reduce the DNC revenue problems. Watch if a Democrat returns to power here the money stream will return and Russia will be in our good graces.

Talk about resistance. Putin has his hands full. He is not a Stalin. Russia has one of the most effective resistance moments of any country. He is not going to throw gas on a smoldering fire looking for fuel.

The M2 Carbine: America's First Assault Rifle?
[The National Interest] Germany is generally credited with developing the first assault rifle with the MP-43, which entered service with select units towards the end of 1943. Later renamed the Sturmgewehr 44‐literally "assault rifle 44"‐this used an intermediate-strength kurz cartridge that balanced the long-range accuracy of heavy, slow-firing bolt-action rifles then prevalent with the automatic-fire capability of submachine guns, which were deadlier at close quarters and capable of laying heavy suppressing fire for infantry assaults.

However, the United States was not very far behind. Late in 1944 it began issuing fully automatic M2 Carbines to Marines and U.S. Army soldiers. Therein, however, lies the controversy: can a fully-automatic "carbine" properly be described as an assault "rifle"?

Suicide bombers attack Pakistan church, killing at least 9, officials say
[FoxNews] Two suicide bombers attacked a church in Pakistan where hundreds of worshippers were attending service ahead of Christmas, killing at least nine people and injuring dozens of others, officials said.

One of the suicide bombers was shot dead outside Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in Quetta, but the other assailant made it to the church's entrance hall as Sunday services opened, said Sarfaraz Bugti, home minister for the southwestern Baluchistan province. The gunman — who didn’t gain access to the main building — opened fire at the churchgoers before detonating his explosive vest.

“There were nearly 400 people inside the church, but the attackers couldn’t get inside the services,” provincial police chief Moazzam Jah told Reuters. “We killed one of them, and the other one exploded himself after police wounded him,” he said.

The Islamic State group later claimed responsibility for the attack on their Aamaq news agency, saying two "plungers" from their group had stormed the church, without providing further details.

The death toll in the deadly attack rose to nine people, including two women, by Sunday afternoon. Five women and two children were among the 57 people hurt. Seven people were listed in critical condition, said Wasim Baig, a spokesman for Quetta's main hospital.

Entirety Of Congress To Preemptively Resign Over Sexual Improprieties
Babylon Bee, so it's satire...I think
WASHINGTON, D.C. - All 535 members of Congress announced Friday that they would resign from office, effective immediately, over a vast array of sexual improprieties yet to be named.

"In light of allegations that may come out about each of us at some point in the future; allegations which we simultaneously deny and deeply, sincerely apologize for; we have decided to resign from our offices at once," members of the Senate and House of Representatives said in a joint statement released to the public.

"We hope and trust that any foolish mistakes that might be revealed about us will not tarnish our individual legacies of being champions of women, steadfast defenders of moral values, and people who went to bed at night and woke up in the morning‐wherever we may have been at the time - ;thinking about how we could best serve our constituents."

With that, the government officials thanked the public for their support, and announced that they would be taking some time to rest at their lake houses and country clubs and spend some time with their families.

At publishing time, salacious and compromising information had been revealed about each member's chosen replacement, causing a total shutdown of the American legislature.

Special places
[DavidWarrenOnline] Hell, from what I hear, must be a paradise for interior designers, as there are so many special places in it. There is a special place for people who prey on children, according to the theologian, Ivanka Trump; and another special place for Republicans who didn’t support Roy Moore, according to Steve Bannon. I am more with Ivanka on this one; though I did want Moore to win, for reasons quite unrelated to his sex life in the 1970s, whatever that was. (I am partial to his sort of lunatic.)

On the other hand, I should like to point to the special place in Hell reserved for women who falsely accuse men of "rape," or "sexual assault," or "sexual harassment" (terms now used almost interchangeably) ‐ even if the man were guilty of some drunk and blundering lubricious act. (That’s when you slap his face, to sober him.) And then another special place, for men and women alike, who fail to speak up when they know that the facts of some case are being misrepresented. And these in addition to the special places for actual rapists, and psychopathic goons ‐ accessible by noose under our auld arrangements.

...I’m prepared to believe almost anything said about the denizens of Hollywood, on the evidence of their movies. I haven’t watched one in a long time, but I’ve seen a few trailers. (They show them on the Internet, whether or not you ask.) These are stewing in sex and violence (have you noticed, gentle reader?) and when the makers affect to be prim, I cannot help chortling.

I have further noticed that a lot of movie stars are content to be packaged as tarts. I find it especially amusing when a woman who puts her "sexiness" on aggressive display ‐ in the absence of any other memorable quality ‐ whines for being taken as a "sex object." (It is an old adage that those who do not want lodgers should not advertise for them.) ... Or, for that matter, when an utter sleaze of a don-juan poses as upholder of women’s rights. (Surely hypocrisy could be better concealed.)

...Some of these special places must be here on Earth, for police departments in all the big towns are getting cloyed with sex investigations of the rich and famous. (Useful tip: avoid "success" and you will never be sued.) As the feminist rage swells, we will need prison camps, whole Gulags and Guantanamos, to house all the accused. And nine in ten of these will be the formerly self-adoring progressive types.

That’s the good news. The sexual revolution has now progressed to the stage when it eats its own. Thousands of scorpions in that "special place" bottle, but every day a few less.

Admitted Al Shabaab terrorist now facing ISIS charges in Beaumont
[TheExaminer] Just released from federal prison after serving the better part of a decade behind bars for allegiances made with jihadi fighters in Somalia in 2009, convicted terrorist Mohammed Ibrahim Ahmed is now alleged to be providing support to the terrorist organization typically referred to as ISIS while in Beaumont, prosecutors contend in new charges unsealed in court this past week.

Among the accusations made against the 43-year-old Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
n-born Ahmed ‐ also known under the aliases of Talha, Mohammed El Eritri and Abu Zakaria ‐ is that, between 2014 and May 2017, he attempted to provide "material support and resources" to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), aka the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), "to wit: personnel and services."

Ahmed was hit with this charge and others just days before he was set to be released from federal prison for terrorism charges he admitted to in New York in 2012, stemming from a 2009 arrest and deportation from Nigeria.

Ahmed offered no defense for the evidence the government presented at that time that showed the accused operative traveled to Somalia in April 2009 "for the purpose of receiving jihad training at an al-Shabaab
... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia...
paramilitary camp." While in Somalia, not only did Ahmed provide the holy warriors there with cash currency as a donation, he also spent loot for goods as well, purchasing a Kalashnikov rifle (commonly referred to as an AK-47), and two grenades.

Additionally, the government showed, Ahmed took lessons on bomb-making and bomb-detonation, learning tricks of the terrorism trade, "including instructions for the preparation and/or assembly of: silver fulminate; urea nitrate; ammonium nitrate; acetone peroxide; a TNT oxidation mechanism in a nitric-sulfuric acid mixture; a bomb detonator; and different types of bomb fuses."

Ahmed was found in possession of the instructions while in Nigeria later that same year.

However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
despite the evidence used to the secure the New York conviction, Ahmed still purported to Beaumont federal Sherlocks that he had no knowledge of bomb-making procedures ‐ which is why he faces additional charges of providing false statements involving national terrorism tacked on to the new terrorism charges sparked in Jefferson County. Investigators further claim that Ahmed not only knew how to make a bomb, but he also discussed "the construction of a bomb with another inmate" and then lied about that, too, to FBI agents in Beaumont.

Ahmed was released from federal custody on Monday, Dec. 11, according to the Bureau of Prisons inmate locator.

Also on Monday, Dec. 11, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas Christopher Tortorice requested that the local court hold Ahmed without bail for four counts of attempting to provide material support or resources to designated foreign terrorist organizations and making false statements involving international terrorism. Tortorice argued to the court that there is a "serious risk the defendant will flee" as well as noted added concerns that Ahmed’s detainment was necessary to assure his appearance in court and "the safety of the community."

A hearing was originally set for the following day, but Ahmed argued that he would need an interpreter to continue further court proceedings. Ahmed has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals until a new hearing, with an interpreter present, can be held Thursday, Dec. 14.

Should he be convicted of the charges currently pending against him in Beaumont, Ahmed could face up to eight years in prison for each of the three pending false statement charges, and 20 years in prison for the terroristic support allegation, on top of monetary penalties, special assessments, and supervised release.

Policy speeches vs policy
[Jpost] President Donald Trump is scheduled to release a new US national security strategy on Monday.

This past Tuesday Trump’s National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster gave a speech laying out some of its components in a speech in Washington.

McMaster’s speech was notable because in it he laid out a host of policies that McMaster himself has reportedly opposed since he was appointed to his position in February.

McMaster for instance has been open in his opposition to linking terrorism with Islam. He has also reportedly insisted on limiting US actions in Syria and Iraq to defeating Islamic State. McMaster reportedly fired his deputy for Middle East policy Derek Harvey last summer due to Harvey’s advocacy of combating Iran’s consolidation of control over Syria through its proxies President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah.

In his speech on Tuesday, McMaster embraced the policies he has reportedly opposed. He discussed at length the threat of what he referred to as "radical Islamist ideology."

That ideology, which the US had previously interpreted "myopically," constitutes "a grave threat to all civilized people," he said.

McMaster regretted US myopia noting, "We didn’t pay enough attention to how it’s being advanced through charities, madrassas and other social organizations."

McMaster fingered Turkey and Qatar, two ostensible US allies, as the main sponsors and sources of funding for Islamist ideology that targets Western interests.

He noted that in the past Saudi Arabia had served as a major sponsor of radical Islam. But Riyadh has been replaced by Qatar and by Turkey, he said.

...The problem with McMaster’s speech and the policy paper it set the stage for is that it is hard to know if they reflect an actual change in policy. Certainly his position and general drift haven’t been reflected in US actions in several key countries this week.

The day after McMaster’s speech the US Embassy in Beirut announced delivery of another $120 million in military assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces.

As Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has repeatedly stated, the LAF is a wholly owned subsidiary of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps controlled directly by Hezbollah, Iran’s Lebanese proxy army.

The Hezbollah-controlled LAF is the fifth-largest recipient of US military assistance worldwide.

According to Ambassador Elizabeth Richard, the LAF has received in excess of $1.5 billion in military aid over the past decade.

...It isn’t surprising, and to a degree it is reasonable, that the US is of two minds about its Middle East policy. For decades the US has both opposed and appeased its Middle Eastern enemies, and supported and turned on its allies.

Under Obama, the two-faced policy was driven by Obama’s ideological conviction that the US must align its Middle East policy with Iran and away from its traditional allies led by Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Under other presidents ‐ including Trump ‐ the US’s double-dealing has been more a testament to the US’s inability to tell its friends from its foes.

Over the years, the US has been unable to tell its allies from its enemies because they were fluid.

As McMaster rightly recalled, for years the Saudis behaved like the Qataris. And they also served as the anchor of the US alliance system with the Sunni Arab world.

Even today, as Crown Prince Muhammad and Saudi Arabia and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi in Egypt make unprecedented steps to fight both jihadist forces and the ideology of jihad, the US cannot know whether either leader will be alive tomorrow or if they will have a sudden change of heart and leave the US high and dry.

...The significant positions McMaster set out on Tuesday will in all likelihood be reflected in the document Trump will release on Monday. But as the arms transfer to Lebanon, Tillerson’s remarks in Paris, and the administration’s incoherent position on Qatar make clear, even the best national security strategies are not worth the paper they are written on unless they are translated into real policies implemented on the ground.
Me, the more time goes by, the more I become convinced that the Don read not just Rand, but Heinlein as well.

‘We Assume He Became Radicalized in New York’: NYC Subway Jihadist Attended Terror-Linked Mosque
The question was asked the other day. Now we have the answer.
[Breitbart] The failed New York City subway bomber reportedly attended a terrorist-linked mosque in Brooklyn that was once funded by the Saudi government.

In an unsealed "confidential" report on counterterrorism issued by the NYPD’s intelligence unit, the agency designated five individuals linked to the Masjid Nur al-Islam mosque attended by the NYC terrorist Akayed Ullah as "most dangerous."

Bangladeshi law enforcement learned from Ullah’s relatives that the 27-year-old terrorist "had shown no sign of being interested in extremism before [moving] to US [sic] with his family in 2011," reports the Dhaka Tribune.

A US officer, Brig. Gen. Jonathan Braga, said the IS fighters had slipped through an area controlled by Syrian regime forces. The Syrian government has fought against IS, but Braga said this is the second time in recent weeks that IS fighters fleeing a contested area further north have moved freely through Syrian-controlled territory.

A coalition blurb said that in addition to the 20-plus IS fighters killed on Wednesday by a US supported Syrian opposition force, an unspecified number were captured. A US official said the detainees numbered about 15. The official was not authorized to provide details and so spoke on condition of anonymity.

A-100 Makes Maiden Flight: Qualitative Leap in AWACS Capability
[StrategicCulture] November 18 was a historic date for the Russian Aerospace Forces. The A-100 Premier airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft, nicknamed "a flying mushroom" due to the distinctive rotating radar dome above the fuselage, completed its maiden flight. The test was conducted by the Taganrog Aviation Scientific and Technical Complex (TANTK), located near the Sea of Azov.

The aircraft is intended to replace Russian Aerospace Forces A-50 and A-50U Mainstay aircraft beginning in 2020 ‐ about the same time as the S-500 air defense system enters service. The A-100 will be another important component of Russia’s anti-access/area-denial arsenal monitoring potentially contested air space. "This is one of [the] priorities of the current arms procurement program," Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said in March 2017.

Based on the Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft, the new AWACS plane will feature completely new systems: avionics, mission systems, and work stations to help reduce the workload for the flight crew and systems operators.

Starting in about 1967 it was a career problem for any Air Force crews to report objects. We had a staff member (former SAC Bomber pilot) explained the UFO kiss of death in my office. As well as two off our friends who were former Duluth Air Force radar traffic operators saying the same thing. The do not report it was the hard mantra.

Now with fighter auto filming systems we have these videos coming out. Two clips, listen to the pilots freaking out. Enjoy.

Europe
European far-right leaders get together for anti-EU bid
[IsraelTimes] Heads of nationalist parties from La Belle France, the Netherlands, Italia, Austria, Britannia and other countries meet in Prague to discuss working together against bloc.

Far-right populists in Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
vowed Saturday to work together to create a new model of intercontinental cooperation that is far removed from the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
Leaders of parties from La Belle France, the Netherlands, Italia, Austria, Britannia and other countries met in Prague to discuss ideas for Europe’s future under the headline "For a Europe of Sovereign Nations."

They attacked the EU for its migrant policies, accused its leader of trying to create a super state run by Brussels and praised US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s approach to migration.

Marine Le Pen, leader of La Belle France’s far-right National Front, blamed the EU for getting "everything wrong."

"Because we love Europe, we accuse the EU of killing Europe," Le Pen told news hounds. She said parties like hers want to save Europe "by preserving nation-states."

"We are not xenophobes, we are opponents of the European Union," Le Pen said. "I think this is something we have in common, because the European Union is a disastrous organization which is leading our continent to destruction through dilution by drowning it in migrants colonists, by the negation of our respective countries, by the draining of our diversity."

Geert Wilders, founder of the Dutch anti-Islam Party for Freedom, followed suit.

"My party is convinced that the Netherlands would be better off outside the European Union, and it will be better for our economy, for our security," Wilders said.

Wilders singled out immigration and "Islamization" of Europe as the most pressing issues.

"We must have the courage, to introduce travel bans as President Trump has done in the United States," he said. "We must have the courage to restrict legal immigration instead of expanding it. We must have the courage to repatriate the illegal immigrants colonists."

Parties with anti-immigration platforms have been making gains at the polls in Europe, although Wilders and Le Pen both ran unsuccessfully this year for the top political posts in their countries.

More recently, Austria’s far-right Freedom Party became a partner in a new coalition government after receiving more than a quarter of the vote in a parliamentary election.

The meeting was hosted by the most anti-migrant, anti-Moslem, anti-EU party in the Czech Republic, Freedom and Direct Democracy. It finished fourth in October’s parliamentary election, winning 22 seats in the 200-seat lower house of Parliament.

The party wants to ban Islam, which it calls an ideology of hate. Its chairman, Tomio Okamura, is currently a deputy speaker of the house.

Hundreds of protesters joined a peaceful rally against the far-right gathering in Prague on Saturday.

#5  Wikipedia:

Tomio Okamura (岡村 富夫 Okamura Tomio, born 4 July 1972[1]) is a Czech–Japanese entrepreneur, writer and politician. He is the founder of the political parties Dawn of Direct Democracy and Freedom and Direct Democracy. Since October 2013, he has been a Member of the Chamber of Deputies (MP), initially for Dawn of Direct Democracy and then from May 2015 for Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), of which he is also leader. He previously served as an independent Senator for Zlín district from October 2012 until his election to the Chamber of Deputies a year later.

Born in Tokyo to a half-Japanese, half-Korean father, and a Moravian mother from the Zlín region,[2] Okamura came to Czechoslovakia for the first time when he was six years old. He spent 10 years in Japan in total. He spent part of his childhood in a children's home in Mašťov near Podbořany where he experienced bullying, causing him to have a stutter until he was 20 years old.[citation needed]

In his youth he worked as a waste collector and later a popcorn seller at a cinema in Japan.[3] Okamura is fluent in Czech and Japanese.

#6  it is useful to remember that National Socialism was considered far-right.

Post-WWII, yes. But back in the 1930s-1945, the national socialist Nazis considered themselves as legitimately socialist as the international socialist Soviets (“commies). And for that matter, Geert Wilders and all the rest are as definitely of the socialist left economically as the various respectable labour socialist parties of Britain and Europe. But really, the definition of fascists of all sorts as “right wing” comes from Stalin — and he was correct that from the Marxist-Leninist-Stalinist perspective, national socialism, which retains business owners so long as they do exactly as the government orders in every jot and tittle, is ever so slightly to the right of the Stalinist method, which directly replaced owners the owners with government functionaries.

Austrian far-right Freedom Party gets interior, defense, and foreign ministries
[IsraelTimes] New coalition government to block The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
from joining EU, crack down on illegal migrants colonists; Freedom Party's Strache supports moving embassy to Jerusalem but won't break EU consensus.

Austria’s Freedom Party has secured the interior, defense, and foreign ministries in the new coalition government with the conservatives, the far-right party’s leader and Austria’s incoming vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache said Saturday.

Future chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s People’s Party party will have the finance, economy, and justice ministries, Kurz said. "The president was clear that he wanted the justice and interior ministries to be held by different parties," Kurz said.

The government, finally assembled after elections two months ago, is due to be sworn in next week, and Kurz, at 31, will be the world’s youngest prime minister.

The Freedom Party’s control of the three key ministries is likely to cause concern in Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
and beyond, given its myrmidon and neo-Nazi past, although the incoming interior minister Herbert Kickl insisted that "nobody has anything to fear."

The last time the Freedom Party entered government, in 2000 under controversial then-leader Joerg Haider, now dead, Austria was briefly ostracized within the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and by Israel.

This time, though, the reaction is likely to be much more muted, with the Freedom Party, which was created by ex-Nazis, seen as having mellowed and with Europe more inured to right-wing parties.

Strache flirted with neo-Nazism in his youth but now, aged 48, besuited and with severe new glasses, portrays himself as a mature statesman rejecting extremism.

Strache visited Israel in 2010, as a guest of the Likud Party, Hadashot news reported, on a trip during which he toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and laid a wreath. He visited again in 2016.

Remaining fiercely nationalist, however, Strache in 2016 dubbed German Chancellor Angela Merkel
...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems ..
"the most dangerous woman in Europe" and he says Islam "has no place in Austria."

Nicknamed "HC," he forged a partnership with Russia’s ruling party, wants EU sanctions on Moscow lifted, and seeks closer ties with the eastern European Visegrad group. He said last week that, in principle, he backs moving the Austrian embassy to Jerusalem but would respect the EU consensus against such a move.

Karin Kneissl, 52, a respected and multi-talented career diplomat who speaks Arabic, Hebrew and Hungarian, was tapped to head the Foreign Ministry. While not a member of the Freedom Party, Kneissl, who studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, shares many of its views, talking tough on immigration and the European Union.

Pakistan reacts at Tillerson’s remarks regarding Haqqani network threats
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The government of Pakistain has reacted at the remarks of the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson regarding the threats posed to Pak government by Haqqani terrorist network and other terror groups.

A front man for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistain Dr. Mohammad Faisal said "We do not agree with the comments and perception of Secretary Tillerson. Pakistain has undertaken large scale operations against holy warriors and their safe havens across the length and breadth of the country with notable success."

He said "These operations are being carried out in our own national interest and Pakistain is determined to rid it’s soil of the scourge of terrorism and extremism."

Secretary Tillerson has reportedly said Pakistain could lose control of its territory if it does not sever ties with the Haqqanis and other terrorists, according to the local Dawn News.

"Pakistain has allowed so many terrorist organizations to find safe haven within its territories, and these organizations are growing in size and influence, that at some point I have said to the leadership of Pakistain, you may be the target, and they turn their attention from Kabul and decide they like Islamabad as a target better," he has warned.

HR McMaster condemns Turkey and Qatar as prime sponsors of Islamist ideology.

[ATimes] On Monday, US National Security Advisor HR McMaster added to tensions in the Middle East when he condemned Turkey and Qatar as prime sponsors of extremist Islamist ideology.

He tore into the Turkish leadership, saying the country’s growing problems with the West are largely due to the rise of the Justice and Development Party in Ankara.

McMaster now rounds on Turkey and Qatar for mentoring a radical Islamist ideology that "is obviously a grave threat to all civilized people." The stunning part is that Turkey is a NATO ally, while the US Central Command is headquartered in Qatar.

Arguably, Turkey no longer qualifies to be a NATO member. McMaster spoke at a rare public policy platform with his British counterpart Mark Sedwill, at an event hosted by the Policy Exchange think tank in Washington. How any of this transmutes into Anglo-American policy will bear watching. (Interestingly, on a visit to Greece last week, Erdogan publicly sought a revision of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne, which was negotiated under the tutelage of Britain and the US and ceded, amongst other things, all Turkish claims on the Dodecanese Islands and Cyprus.

Significantly, McMaster’s outburst came within hours of a meeting in Ankara between Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, their eighth this year, during a combined day-long trip by the Russian leader which included stops in Egypt, Turkey and the Hmeimim airbase in Syria.

Argentine navy head sacked over submarine disappearance

...a country located on the other side of the Deep South. It is covered with Pampers and inhabited by Grouchos, who dance the Tangle. They used to have some islands called the Malvinas located where the Falklands are now. They're not supposed to cry for Evita...
has dismissed the head of its navy a month after the disappearance of a submarine with 44 crew members on board.

The sacking of Navy Admiral Marcelo Srur came as relatives of the missing crew demonstrated on Saturday outside the presidential palace in the capital, Buenos Aires.

Carrying posters and banners, they urged authorities to continue the search until the ARA San Juan is found.

"They promised us that they would keep looking for them, exhausting all the resources," Luis Tagliapietra, father of missing crew member Damian Tagliapietra, told news hounds.

"They told me the saying 'a sailor does not leave another sailor behind'. Well, here we are, we're reminding them of that," he added.

Contact was lost with the ARA San Juan on November 15, shortly after the vessel reported an electrical problem.

Argentina officially ended its rescue mission for the vessel two weeks ago, after a noise, thought to be the submarine imploding, was detected near its last known location.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
the Argentina's search for the vessel continues, supported by aircraft and ships from 18 countries, including the United Kingdom, Russia and the United States.

[FoxNews] Two Navy SEALs being investigated in the strangulation death of Army Sgt. Logan Melgar in Mali in June allegedly offered the Green Beret a cut of the military money they pocketed, but he refused, according to a report.

Melgar confronted the two Navy SEALs after discovering their alleged scheme, where they reportedly took money for themselves from a fund used to pay informants, the Daily Beast reported.

The two men tried to get Melgar to join the racket, but he declined the offer, the report said. Melgar later ended up dead in what appeared to be a strangulation.

Whether the SEALs were involved in the death remained unclear as the investigation continued. The commandos were initially described as “witnesses,” but authorities later changed that to “persons of interest.” Officials said Melgar’s cause of death was “homicide by asphyxiation.”

Melgar, 34, was found dead June 4 at the U.S. Embassy housing he shared in Mali with several other special operations personnel working in West Africa on training and counterterrorism missions, the New York Times reported.

There have been no charges so far in connection with the homicide, but two member of SEAL Team 6 – the famous counterterror unit that killed Usama Bin Laden in 2011 – were placed on administrative leave, pending investigation, according to the Times.

The SEALs reportedly told their military leaders that they found Melgar and tried to save him, according to the Daily Beast. They also said Melgar was intoxicated that night as he was taking hand-to-hand fighting exercises.

The autopsy, however, showed no signs of drug or alcohol usage, according to the report.

Law of the Jungle: US soldiers learning new skills for new threats
[FoxNews] They are scenes reminiscent of the Vietnam War and the Pacific Theater during World War II: U.S. soldiers, caked with mud and dripping wet from monsoon rains, quietly traversing thick jungle brush.

But instead of southeast Asia, these are the Hawaiian jungles northwest of Honolulu, where the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division is training some of our military’s bravest men and women to fight and survive in this unique terrain. It’s a less familiar sight for this generation’s soldiers, who have spent years patrolling the desert, mountain and urban landscapes of Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Understanding how to fight in the jungles is invaluable training to us right now," says First Sergeant George Feghali of the 25th Infantry Division, who is training at the 25th ID's Lighting Academy in Wahiawa on the island of Oahu.

"The way the army’s been focused for the past 16 years has been in desert urban environments," Feghali continues. "We’ve kind of gotten away from our roots."

The academy is the U.S. Army’s first jungle training school since the last one, based in Panama, closed in 1999. While no one here can talk military strategy or policy, Lightning Academy was established at a time when ISIS, Al Qaeda and other extremist groups are gaining traction in the Pacific region, specifically in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

And while there are no jungles in North Korea, heightened tension created by Kim Jong Un’s nuclear ambitions is another reason why preparing soldiers for deployment outside of Iraq and Afghanistan is vital training.

While 70 percent of Lightning Academy's participants are from the 25th Infantry Divison, other military branches will train here also, as well as some in law enforcement agencies like the FBI.

Feghali and Ruiz are among a class of 75 soldiers who began the grueling three-week course in November. By Friday's graduation, they were two of just 33 to make it until the end.

"The goal is to be able to teach the skills so students survive, fight, [and] win in a jungle environment," says Geis. "Our job is to be ready to fight the next fight."

Speaking as a survivor of that horror of a training program, all I can say about the Darien is that literally everything that walks, crawls, creeps, grows or swims in that region is either poisonous or it want to eat you. We slept in trees and ate snakes and grubs. We killed an Ocelot for dinner one day and found out that those big hairy tree spiders taste like crab.

Hafiz Saeed says creation of Bangladesh will be avenged by liberating Kashmir
[PAKISTANTODAY.PK] Jammat-ud-Dawah (JUD) chief Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
on Saturday vowed to take Dire Revenge for the creation of East Pakistain, now Bangladesh.

Speaking in Lahore, Saeed assured that the roads leading to Dire Revenge are in progress in Jammu and Kashmire, and this movement would intensify in the near future as it has to go a long way. "Defeat of Pakistain in 1971 will be avenged, and this will be done by liberating Kashmire from India," he said.

Saeed’s remark comes as India and Bangladesh are celebrating December 16 as ’Vijay Diwas’ and ’Victory Day’, respectively.

He discarded the allegations levelled against him by India for spreading terrorism. Terming himself as an activist of independence in Jammu and Kashmire, Hafiz said that Kashmiris dying in the valley are sacrificing for Pakistain first and Kashmire later.

Saeed confirmed that his organization will contest the 2018 general elections in Pakistain under the banner of the Milli Moslem League, which is yet to be registered with the Election Commission of Pakistain. The banned JuD is believed to be the front organization for the Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT). "The Milli Moslem League (MML) is planning to contest next year’s general elections," said Saeed.

Street crime & terrorism
[DAWN] THE DG Sindh Rangers, Maj Gen Muhammad Saeed, has executed an almost perfect illustration of the saying ’to crack a nut with a sledgehammer’. Addressing a news conference in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
on Wednesday, the head of the paramilitary force said that robbers and street criminals should be tried as turbans under the Anti Terrorism Act and suggested that the home department was considering such a step. He went on to dilate upon the success of the Rangers-led operation in the city that he said had resulted in a steep decline in crimes such as assassination, kidnapping for ransom and extortion. Street crime, however, remained a concern, one that neither the Rangers nor the police had been able to curb.

When a law-enforcement agency drafted in ostensibly to tackle the most serious crimes is tacitly given licence to use unbridled force ‐ including torture and extra judicial killings ‐ to achieve its objectives, it leaves both the law-enforcement apparatus and society brutalised. All nuance is lost: the ends justify the means. The DG Rangers’ statement is certain to have struck a chord with many people, especially those who have fallen prey to street crime. However,
you can observe a lot just by watching...
it is for good reason that vigilante ’justice’ lies outside the pale of the law; crime must be prosecuted according to a dispassionate rationale. Every act of criminality does not rise to the level of terrorism, which does not mean that certain types of crime should be condoned, but that perspective is important. Equating someone who, for instance, steals mobile phones, with a button man is overstating matters, particularly when there are several privileged individuals in our society who get away with actions that seem to constitute the legal definition of terrorism. Conflating street crime with terrorism also trivialises the crimes that attract the application of the ATA. Moreover, the DG Rangers is surely aware of how the ATCs are already clogged with cases. Adding to the bottleneck is hardly the answer.

Mass Arrests Paralyzes Venezuelas Energy Sector
CARACAS/HOUSTON (Reuters) - Decisions at some joint ventures with foreign firms are delayed. A growing number of oil tankers sit idle because no one authorizes payments. Employees struggle to get approval for routine expenses, from taxis to training.

An alleged crackdown on graft in Venezuela, seen by critics as an effort by President Nicolas Maduro to consolidate power, has sown panic across the country’s energy industry and all but paralyzed state-run Petroleos de Venezuela SA, or PDVSA, according to people at the company and across the sector.

The ongoing purge, in which prosecutors have arrested at least 67 executives including two recently ousted oil ministers, now threatens to further harm operations for the OPEC country, which is already producing at near 30-year-lows and struggling to run PDVSA units including Citgo Petroleum, its U.S. refiner.

Govt told to implement anti-blasphemy measures online
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has given the federal government a week to implement its order in a case related to the uploading of sacrilegious content on social media.

IHC Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui warned on Friday that in case of non-compliance, the prime minister and other cabinet ministers could be summoned at the next hearing.

"If the same attitude continues [to be] exhibited by the executive, this court [will] issue directions for personal appearance of the worthy prime minister of Pakistain, ministers for law, religious affairs and information technology, to face contempt of court proceedings," read Justice Siddiqui’s order.

The judge added that the "respondents may realise this aspect that in contempt matters, no protection under Article 248 of the Constitution of Islamic Theocratic Republic of Pakistain is available".

He recalled that former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani had been sent packing over contempt of court.

Pakistan-born woman tried to use bitcoin to aid IS, say prosecutors
[DAWN] A suburban New York hospital technician accused of using bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to launder money meant for the murderous Moslem Islamic State

(IS) group was nabbed
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
on charges of money laundering in support of a foreign terrorist organization and bank fraud, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Federal prosecutors in New York’s Suffolk County claimed in court papers that Zoobia Shahnaz, 27, used fraudulent credit cards and loans to accumulate $85,000, which she attempted to transfer to IS before attempting to go to Syria to join it.

Prosecutors said that after travelling to Jordan to work with the Syrian American Medical Society, Ms Shahnaz returned to the United States and applied for six credit cards, which she used to buy bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The resident of the hamlet of Brentwood in Islip on Long Island appeared before a federal judge late on Thursday and was ordered to be detained, prosecutors said.

Her lawyer, Steve Zissou, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the case.

"After borrowing about $85,000 with fraudulently obtained credit cards and loans and withdrawing another $22,000 from bank accounts in her own name, Ms Shahnaz sent funds to recipients in Pakistain, China and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
," prosecutors said.
The Times of Israel adds:
The former lab technician worked in Manhattan and had no known criminal history, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Shahnaz quit her job in June without telling her family and was stopped by authorities at John F. Kennedy International Airport in July while attempting to board a flight to Islamabad, Pakistain. Her flight included a layover in Istanbul, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey, a common point of entry for individuals trying to join the Islamic State group in Syria, prosecutors said.

Her lawyer, Steve Zissou, said she was sending money overseas to help Syrian refugees.
And from NPR:
Shahnaz is a U.S. citizen born in Pakistain.

If convicted of bank fraud, Shahnaz faces up to 30 years in prison. The other charges each carry possible penalties of up to 20 years.

Court filings suggest that part of the government's case will focus on the defendant's Internet search history. In May and June of this year, according to the documents, she read articles about women joining and fighting ISIS, accessed maps of locations along the The Sick Man of Europe Turkey-Syria border and cities inside ISIS-controlled territory, Googled phrases such as "medical students ISIS" and "how much overdraft can I get," and watched videos of ISIS members urging Moslems to carry out attacks in Western countries.

German ‘Islamic State’ bride regrets joining terror group in Iraq

" (IS) turban told German television Thursday that she had ruined her life by joining the terror organization.
Life is harder when you’re stupid.
The case of Linda W. has sparked a discussion in Germany on whether she should be tried in her native country or in Iraq, where she could face a death sentence for joining the turban group.

Life ’ruined’ by terror group
During the interview conducted by multiple German news outlets, Linda W. said:

"In Germany, everyone knows me, everyone knows how I look. I cannot go anywhere without being recognized, and I probably won’t find a job anymore."

"I don’t know how I came up with such a dumb idea. I’ve completely ruined my life."

"I was only in houses, so I’ve never really had anything to do with guns, nothing at all."

Hans-Georg Maaßen, the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, said earlier this month: "Women who have lived in IS-held areas in recent years are often so radicalized and tied to IS’ ideology that they can justifiably be called jihadists."

Suggesting that charges could be leveled against Linda W. and others like her, federal public prosecutor Peter Frank said: "We are of the opinion these women are guilty of membership in a foreign terrorist organization because they helped to strengthen the internal structure of the so-called ’Islamic State.'"

Why this is important: Until now, German women who were not in combat but married to IS holy warriors were rarely prosecuted. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
Linda W.’s case means that could all change.

How did she get to Iraq: At the age of 15, she forged her mother’s signature to catch a flight from Dresden to Istanbul. She met up with a Chechen turban in the Ottoman Turkish city, who she then married. They both crossed into Iraq, where her husband died in a battle shortly afterwards.

What happens next: If German prosecutors file charges against Linda W., they can make an extradition request to Iraqi authorities. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
without that, her fate lies in the hands of the Iraqi judicial system.

Zimbabwe: Mugabe Family Struggles to Adjust
[All Africa] GOVERNMENT has made drastic cuts to former president Bob Muggsy Mugabe

Dumped in November 2017 when the Missus decided she wanted to be president, and opposed heer might against Crocodile Mnangawa Important safety tip: If your opponent goes by the name Crocodile andf your title is Shopper in Chief let him win....
's travel expenditure after the ousted long-time leader and his family flew out of Harare to Singapore this week, nearly a month after his 37-year term came to a dramatic end following a soft military coup.

This comes as it emerged that Mugabe spent US$32,1 million on foreign trips between January and September this year against an annual budget of US$20,6 million. The Office of the President and Cabinet also spent US$1,1 million on domestic travel as of September against a budget of US$650 000.

Officials close to this situation also revealed the former leader's security team at his Borrowdale "Blue Roof" mansion was also reduced from 85 to 20.

Sources familiar with developments at Mugabe's mansion told the Zim-bob-we Independent this week that the nonagenarian was granted the presidential Air Zim-bob-we aircraft (AZW1) when his family and security team left the country on Monday evening. Former first lady Grace Mugabe, the sources said, took six security personnel after resisting efforts to reduce her security details to three.

It is also understood the Police Protection Unit, which provides VIP protection, withdrew its team from Mugabe's motorcade last Friday. Following last month's military intervention, which brought a crashing end to Mugabe's authoritarian rule, his family had been scattered across different countries before reuniting last week. It has also got together in Singapore.

According to figures obtained from the 2018 National Budget, the Office of the President and Cabinet spent US$32,1 million on foreign trips, although the trips have yielded little in tangible results for Zim-bob-weans. The expenditure came at a time Treasury is struggling to pay civil servants as well as finance capital projects and social service delivery.

In a massive decline from the previous years, Treasury allocated US$17 million to the Office of the President and Cabinet for foreign travel and US$700 000 for domestic travel in the 2018 budget.

Treasury figures show that the public sector wage bill currently accounts for 90% of government income, starving other critical sectors of funding.

Mugabe flew to Singapore, where his daughter Bona, son-in-law Simba Chikore and grandson Simbanashe have been stationed since the military take-over.

Bona is expecting her second child.

Mugabe's fun-loving sons Robert Junior and Bellarmine Chatunga were staying at their affluent Sandhurst mansion in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, until they came back last week to face reality.

"AZW1 departed at 2100hrs with 18 crew and 23 passengers on Monday night. Mugabe had to compromise by allowing a smaller contingency, as well as a smaller security team, so that Grace could be allowed to travel with a six-member security team for herself. He also reduced the security team accompanying him, although Grace refused to take three security people with her. In the past he would have taken over 80 people," a source said.

Seized weapons in Marawi not from military
[NEWS.MB.PH] None of the weapons seized from Marawi City and destroyed this week showed any sign that they came from military stocks, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero said Friday.

"As for the (seized Maute Group) firearms inventoried so far, we are still to see any weapon (serial numbers) matching those in the inventory of the AFP," Guerrero said in Filipino when asked during a press briefing in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City whether AFP weapons were found among the terrorists’ arms cache.

More than 1,000 firearms of various calibers and types were seized by government forces in the battle to liberate Marawi City.

The battle began when government troops tried to arrest Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...
leader and ISIS "emir" in Southeast Asia, IsnilonHapilon, last May 23.

Fighting was declared after authorities confirmed the death of Hapilon and Maute Group co-founder, Omar Maute, last October 23.

Some 652 weapons were taken to the Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, to be destroyed ceremonially early this week.

The remaining 400 are still being processed as of this posting.

The Saudi General Directorate of Traffic gave details of the new regulations that will follow the lifting of the ban on the official Saudi Press Agency late on Friday.

"Yes, we will authorise women to drive cycle of violences" as well as trucks, it said, adding that the royal decree stipulates that the law on driving will be "equal" for both men and women.

There will be no special licence plate numbers for female-driven cars, it said. But women involved in road accidents or who commit traffic violations will be dealt with at special centres that will be established and run by women.

Decree against Afghan Taliban
[DAWN] THE strength of the Afghan Taliban
...Arabic for students...
mainly rests with their territorial control in Afghanistan and a ’religious’ narrative of the struggle against the ’foreign occupation’ of Afghanistan. Kabul believes they can be delegitimised if Pak religious scholars issue a fatwa, or religious decree, against the Taliban’s armed resistance.

Former president Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
...A product, probably the sole product, of the Southern Alliance...

Deobandi holy man, known as Mullah Diesel during the war against the Soviets, his sympathies for the Taliban have never been tempered by honesty ...
and Maulana Samiul Haq
...the Godfather of the Taliban, leader of his own faction of the JUI. Known as Mullah Sandwich for his habit of having two young boys at a time...
, but all attempts proved futile. However,
corruption finds a dozen alibis for its evil deeds...
Kabul is still confident as army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa reportedly promised the Afghan government in October that he would try to obtain a fatwa from Pak religious scholars.

To what extent a fatwa can affect a resistance movement such as that of the Afghan Taliban is debatable; it is not certain who will issue and support such a decree, as Pak religious scholars have in many instances declared the Afghan Taliban’s resistance a jihad. It is no secret that most leaders of the Afghan Taliban studied in Pakistain’s madressahs and that sectarian affinity still exists between the two. Nevertheless, as part of a Pak media delegation that recently visited Kabul, this writer felt that Afghan officials were hopeful that an anti-Taliban fatwa would come from Pakistain soon.

As Pakistain’s media is busy covering internal political crisis, Afghanistan is rarely discussed at public forums; the Foreign Office and ISPR have also not issued any substantive statement on the issue of Afghans anticipating a fatwa. In connection with the army chief’s visit to Kabul in October, the media only reported on the establishment of high-level contacts between the two countries and formation of working groups to increase military, intelligence and economic cooperation, apart from evolving a joint mechanism for the return of Afghan refugees from Pakistain. These were positive developments and will, indeed, help reduce the trust deficit between the two countries. Nevertheless, the reported fatwa component has not been highlighted in the media.

Billionaire Sabih al-Masri detained in Saudi Arabia
[PAKISTANTODAY.PK] Paleostinian billionaire businessman Sabih al-Masri has been detained in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
on a business trip to Riyadh, his family confirmed to Rooters news agency.

The 80-year-old founder of Zara Investment Holding and chairman of Arab Bank was held in the Saudi capital for questioning last week about "information related to corruption", according to Rai al-Youm.

The Arab news website reported on Saturday that no formal charges were made against al-Masri, who reportedly also holds Saudi and Jordanian citizenship.

Al-Masri, one of Jordan’s most prominent businessman, is the cousin of the billionaire Munib al-Masri, the wealthiest person in Paleostine.

He also founded the Paleostine Securities Exchange, and has managed investment companies and financial economic institutions across the Middle East and beyond, including Arab Bank.

Headquartered in Amman, Arab Bank is Jordan’s largest lender and functions as a major economic engine throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

Masri’s detention sent shockwaves across Jordan where Masri’s multibillion-dollar investments are a cornerstone of the economy and employ thousands.

Rooters reported that Masri had cancelled a dinner for friends and business associates that was planned for Tuesday upon his return to Jordan.

Saudi Arabia initiated an anti-corruption purge at the beginning of November, which has implicated some of the country’s brass hats, businessmen and members of the royal family.
Ynet adds:
Reasons for Masri's detention were not clear but political sources said the Saudis might have used him to put pressure on Jordan's King Abdullah not to attend a Moslem summit last week to discuss US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The Jordanian monarch attended the Istanbul summit, however. He is a custodian of Moslem holy sites in Jerusalem and has been vocal in criticizing Trump over his decision on Jerusalem.

Soddy Arabia, whose relations with the United States have warmed with Trump taking a harder line against its arch-rival Iran than his predecessor, appears to have taken a softer line on the decision on Jerusalem, according to analysts. Riyadh sent a junior minister to the Istanbul meeting.

China now stalls red corner notice against Zakir Naik at the Interpol

In 1999, he was freed by the Indian government in exchange for passengers on hijacked Indian Airlines Flight 814 that had been diverted to Kandahar. The hijackers were led by Masood Azhar's brother, Ibrahim Athar. Once he was handed over to the hijackers, they fled to Pak territory despite the fact that Islamabad had earlier stated that any of the hijackers would be jugged at the border. The Pak government had also previously indicated that Azhar would be allowed to return home since he did not face any charges there. Shortly after his release, he made a public address to an estimated 10,000 people in Karachi, firing up the rubes against America and India...

, China has now blocked issuance of a Red Corner Notice against Salafi preacher Zakir Naik who is wanted in India for terrorist activities.

The current President of Interpol is Meng Hongwei, a Chinese and a trusted bureaucrat of Chinese President Xi Jinping who could have been instrumental in blocking the Indian request to the global police body to issue a Red Corner Notice against Naik, top sources in the Interpol said.

The current President is also said to be instrumental in the arrest of nearly three dozen Uyghurs wanted in China by the Egyptian authorities. The RCNs against the Uyghurs were issued at the behest of Chinese Government request and Hongwei had also pursued the matter with the Egypt Government for the execution of the RCNs, the sources said.

'We have defeated terrorism and today our schools are safe,' says PM on APS anniversary
[DAWN] Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Saturday paid his respects to the deaders of the devastating attack on the Army Public School (APS) that took place three years ago in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Women's University in Kohat, Abbasi said, "When the APS Peshawar attack took place three years ago, all political parties and all our armed forces came together to fight terrorism in the country."

"As a result of this fight, we have defeated terrorism and today, our schools and mosques our safe," he added. "Everyone is free to visit markets and live freely in this country."

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa also shared a message on the third anniversary of the APS attack.

Dem Rep. Kihuen won't seek re-election amid sexual harassment claims
[FoxNews] Rep. Ruben Kihuen, D-Nev., announced Saturday that he would not seek re-election in the wake of multiple sexual harassment allegations against him.

"I want to state clearly again that I deny the allegations in question," Kihuen said in a statement. "However," the freshman congressman added, "the allegations that have surfaced would be a distraction from a fair and thorough discussion of the issues in a reelection campaign."

"Therefore," Kihuen went on, "it is in the best interests of my family and my constituents to complete my term in Congress and not seek re-election."

The announcement by Kihuen, 37, came one day after the House Ethics Committee announced it had opened an investigation into the harassment claims against him.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
HARDBALLS: Tingles Chris Matthews Nailed By Sexual Harassment Scandal
[TruePundit] An MSNBC spokesman confirmed Saturday the company made a separation-related payment to one of Chris Matthews employees after the woman complained about sexual harassment.

Two sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Caller that Matthews paid $40,000 to settle with an assistant producer on his show, "Hardball with Chris Matthews," in 1999 after she accused him of harassment. An MSNBC spokesperson contested that claim to the Caller, saying the company instead paid significantly less as part of a severance package.

The woman complained to CNBC executives about Matthews making inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company of others.

The MSNBC spokesman said that they thoroughly reviewed the situation at the time and that Matthews received a formal reprimand. Based on people who were involved in matter, the network concluded that the comments were inappropriate and juvenile but were not intended to be taken as propositions.

The woman received separation-related compensation when she left MSNBC and has gone on to work in a number of high-profile media positions. MSNBC declined to comment on whether the employee left because of Matthews or whether this was the only claim in Matthews’ history at the company.

Two officials in dock for aiding jailed terrorists

jails to contact their handlers in the country and Pakistain on the phone. The state government has ordered a probe.

On December 10, a court in Jaipur awarded life imprisonment to eight LeT terrorists, two of whom are lodged in Punjab jails. They were held guilty of criminal conspiracy, recruiting persons for terror activities and printing counterfeit notes. Among them Asgar Ali was lodged in a Bikaner jail, Shakkar Ulla in Nabha and Mohammad Iqbal in an Amritsar jail when they contacted their handlers in Pakistain and continued recruitment using phones from jails.

these men in 2010, following inputs from central agencies, which had intercepted telephone conversations between them and the Lashkar commander.

In its order, the court slammed the jail officials for giving a "free hand" to the accused to use mobile phones and make contacts. The court asked the Home Departments of Rajasthan and Punjab to take action against the officials concerned.

"There were serious lapses on part of the jail superintendents and other officials posted in these jails as they allowed the Lions of Islam to use mobiles phones to make contacts outside," the court observed.

DGP (Prisons) IPS Sahota said: "We received the court orders two days ago and a probe has been marked to the IG (Prisons) to establish the role of jail officials, who were then posted as superintendents in the two jails."

Sources said while jammers in these two jails were not working, the jail officials allowed mobile phones to be smuggled inside the jails. Whether money was exchanged and who all accepted the money to allow these Lions of Islam use mobile phones was under scrutiny, they added.

IG (Prisons) Roop Kumar Arora said he had summoned the case file along with the record of the two jails to establish the role of the officials posted there. "We need to ascertain how the mobile phones reached inside jails and who were involved in it," he said, adding that the nexus would be probed and the guilty punished.

Taliban, Haqqani network members roam free in Pakistan: Pentagon
[PAKISTANTODAY.PK] In its first report submitted to the United States (US) Congress since Washington adopted a new strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia, the US Defence Department said that the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
and the Haqqani network are roaming free in Pakistain.

"Although Pak military operations have disrupted some Death Eater sanctuaries, certain Death Eater groups such as the Taliban and the Haqqani network retains freedom of movement in Pakistain. The US continues to convey to all levels of Pak leadership the importance of taking action against all terrorist and Death Eater groups," Tolo News quoted the report as saying.

The Pentagon also said that terrorist safe havens along the Durand Line and the presence of hard boyz in Afghanistan are threatening the stability of the region.

"The Afghanistan-Pakistain border region remains a sanctuary for various groups, including al-Qaeda, al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba

, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP), ISIS-K, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. Sanctuary on the Pak side and presence on the Afghan side remain security challenges for both countries and pose a threat to regional security and stability," the report added.

The report said that Afghanistan was fighting Lions of Islam who were being empowered from outside the country.

"Afghanistan continues to face an externally enabled and resilient insurgency. As Afghanistan completes its third year of full responsibility for the security of the country, Afghan forces have shown determination and growing capability in their fight against the Taliban-led insurgency," the Pentagon report said.

Home Front: Culture Wars
This Week in Books, December 17, 2017
Continuing the theme of gift books, let us not forget the kiddos.

For the very young:

The Adventures of Frog and Toad
Arnold Lobel
Barnes and Nobel, 2009

Short, whimsical stories about two friends, Frog and Toad. My children just adore these stories; even today my oldest will stop what she is doing to hear me read to my youngest. Sometimes she will even read the dialogue of one of the characters while I do the other.

Other than one part where Toad says, 'Shutup!' during the story “The Dream”, the dialogue is totally kid safe, and the stories teach good moral lessons.

This edition is a collection of three different books, sort of a Lord of the Rings for entry readers: Frog and Toad are Friends, Frog and Toad Together, and Days with Frog and Toad.

Page 14 of Frog and Toad Together:

"Hurry!" said Frog.
"We will run and catch it."
"No!" shouted Toad.
"I cannot do that."
"Why not?" asked Frog.
"Because," wailed Toad,
"running after my list
is not one of the things
that I wrote
on my list of things to do!"

The print is large and easy to read, and the picture whimsical and well done.

For those who are comfortable readers:

The Story of the World
Volume 1: Ancient Times - From the Earliest Nomads to the Last Roman Emperor

Susan Wise Bauer
Peach Hill Press, 2006

I am usually skeptical of the History of Everything genre. They tend to be sweeping, skipping some events and over-slanting others. This 4 Volume set pleasantly surprised me. With the youngster in mind, there are simple maps, excellent pencil drawings and plenty of examples concerning the current topic, such as stories about Anansi the Spider, and excerpt from The Epic of Gilgamesh, introduction to Greek and Chinese letters, Ganga and Shiva, and much more.

What also impressed me was the scope Mrs. Bauer attains. From Meso-America to China and Japan, and from pre-agriculture through Rome, the flow is neat, concise, well organized, and fair. There is a Judeo-Christian lean to the content, but Mrs. Bauer is completely fair to every culture and epoch discussed.

Page 124-125, Babylon, Assyria, and Persia, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon:

Nebuchadnezzar, the great king of Babylon, sat on his throne and worried. He had a great empire - but what if another country attacked him? He wasn't sure that his army could defend Babylon from invaders. And he was very worried about Persia, a country to the east of Babylon. The Persians were expanding their own country. Their army was strong. He had heard frightening stories about Persian soldiers!

"I know what I'll do," he thought to himself. "I will ask the king of Persia if I can marry his daughter. Then he will be my father-in-law, and he won't attack me!"

Nebuchadnezzar had never seen the daughter of the Persian king. But that didn't matter to him. He was willing to marry a stranger to keep Babylon safe. So he sent messages to the king of Persia, offering to marry the princess.

There a map on page 125 to help locate the subjects of this chapter. Also available are work books for each volume which have questions and crafts concerning each chapter. Great intro to history.

Finally, for our older readers:

Starship Troopers
Robert A. Heinlein
Ace, 1987

I really think a person could spend a lot of time considering the content in this book, and it will get its own post later. Besides the content, it is an excellent reminder that movies do not always match books, and usually are not even close to being better. For those of you who have read Starship Troopers, you can imagine my surprise at how much not like the movie this book is. I could see where the movie got some its parts and then totally missed the point, intentionally, as I understand the movie was supposed to be a parody of sorts.

Page 117-118

"If you can't listen, perhaps you can tell the class whether 'value' is a relative, or an absolute?"

I had been listening; I just didn't see any reason not to listen with eyes closed and spine relaxed. But his question caught me out; I hadn't read that day's assignment. "An absolute," I answered, guessing.

"Wrong," he said coldly. "'Value' has no meaning other than in relation to living beings. The value of a thing is always relative to a particular person, is completely personal and different in quantity for each living human - 'market value' is a fiction, merely a rough guess at the average of personal values, all of which must be quantitatively different or trade would be impossible." (I had wondered what Father would have said if he had heard "market value" called a "fiction" - snort in disgust, probably.)

"This very personal relationship, 'value,' has two factors for a human being: first, what can he do with a thing, its use to him...and second, what he must do to get it, its cost to him. There is an old song which asserts 'the best things in life are free.' Not true! Utterly false! This was the tragic fallacy which brought on the decadence and collapse of the democracies of the twentieth century; those noble experiments failed because the people had been led to believe that they could simply vote for whatever they wanted...and get it, without toil, without sweat, without tears.

"Nothing of value is free. Even the breath of life is purchased at birth only through gasping effort and pain." He had been still looking at me and added, "If you boys and girls had to sweat for your toys the way a newly born baby has to struggle to live you would be happier...and much richer. As it is, with some of you, I pity the poverty of your wealth. You! I've just awarded you the prize for the hundred-meter dash. Does it make you happy?"

The whole book is like this, other than the action parts. The reader is invited to go as deep as one wants or can; a young me would have thought 'bad-ass dialogue'; me today could take this short passage to the campfire and discuss it until dawn. That said, a younger me talking about this passage with an older me would have allowed myself to be led to the deeper end of the pool, learning to swim where I could not touch.

This Week in Emergency Preparedness

Looking at the next couple of weekends, and my availability, this is my last post for 2017 so let's talk travel.

Regionally, there is a story about a traveler whose routing devices failed and he ended up in Kansas instead of New Mexico. Someone asked me, "Why didn't he just look at his map?" I replied, "Probably because nobody carries maps anymore, especially the youngers. When was the last time you went into a gas station and saw a rotary of maps?" I have a Road Atlas which has all 50 states and major metros. Used it a couple times when a routine trip hit closed roads. The electronic stuff is nice, and becoming ever more reliable, but out in the middle of bumbug Kansas, or which ramp St. Louis, always seem to be when electronics fail and we have to switch to manual.

Have you checked to see if your Kidd fire extinguisher is a dud, and if so replaced it yet? Good time to check.

See you all sometime in 2018. If you are traveling, travel safe. If you are hosting, enjoy the gathering. Going to be by yourself, rock it.

#1  I need to stop by Barnes & Noble to pick up the Frog and Toad collection. I remember liking it when I was young, and the trailing daughters did in their turn. Startship Troopers needs no comment — I grew up reading him, and that one is in my re-read cycle.

The comments about the history book (and series) on Amazon are interesting. Apparently Mrs. Bauer wrote them to be a home schooling series, which explains additional workbooks. But volume 1 is intended for first grade, volume 2 for second grade and so forth, to build a solid foundation of historical knowledge before going into depth on individual periods in the higher grades. Unlike swksvolFF I do like broad sweep of history books, as they put more particulate knowledge into perspective. I wish I’d had these or something like it when the trailing daughters were young — I would have added it to our bedtime story list, to be read a chapter at a time.

#2  Cutthroat game of Sorry! with the kids.

There was a book which just ruined that genre for me called 'A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. Maybe it is good, and if so I hope someone urges me to give it another try, but I didn't match with the tone, I already knew the content, and it was a thing so the people who thought I should read it kept hounding me until I set the book down and told them no more.

The problem I had with 'Shutup!' in The Dream was not that it is inappropriate, but very appropriate as, my take on it, Toad was telling his ego to take a hike, as his ego was becoming so self absorbed his best friend was being chased away. I just switched to 'Be Quiet!' or 'Go Away!' as my prudish self did not want my pre-teen going around the classroom telling people to shutup.

Wife and I had a hard talk about education and we decided we would at least supplement the kids' education. Among other subjects, I was handed History. We would read a chapter or two each night, and hit the workbooks, which are fun.

#3  Good for you guys!

My parents were academics, so supplementation was a way of life when I was growing up. Questions they didn’t have answers to merited an immediate exploration of the Encyclopedia Britannica or my mother’s college textbooks. Nowadays my cell phone gets more exercise looking things up on the internet than making phone calls. ;-)

I continued the family tradition — and drove trailing daughter #2 a bit crazy because I insisted she work to meet my standards rather than the lower standard required by her teachers to get an A. Td #1 strove always for mastery, so it wasn’t an issue.

Danish nationals knifed in Gabon over Trump Jerusalem recognition
Sudden Jihad Syndrome doesn’t just happen in the colonized West.
[IsraelTimes] One man at death's door after attack in popular tourist area of Libreville by Nigerien who also wanted retribution for US attacks on Moslems.

Two Danish nationals were maimed Saturday in a knife attack in Gabon’s capital apparently committed in retribution for "US attacks against Moslems," a minister said.

The two men, who were working for the National Geographic channel, were stabbed while shopping in a market popular with tourists, said defense minister Etienne Massard, adding that the attack appeared to be politically motivated.

"According to the first testimonies at the scene, the assailant, a 53-year-old Nigerien man, shouted ’Allahu Akbar’ ("God is Greatest") during the attack. He was placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
on the spot," said Massard.

The man, who has lived in Gabon for 19 years, "in his first statements said he acted in retaliation for US attacks against Moslems and America’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital."

The two victims were sent to a hospital in the capital Libreville, one in a serious condition, government front man Alain-Claude Bilie By Nze told AFP.

The Danish foreign ministry confirmed two nationals had been "maimed in Gabon" without giving any further details.

Massard said the government was treating the attack as "an isolated act" and said an investigation had been launched.

"Following this cowardly and despicable act, the government wishes to assure the people that Gabon will not become a theatre for attacks against our way of life," he said in a televised address.

"Everything will be done to ensure that the perpetrator and any accomplices are punished to the full extent of the law."

Gabon, a small French-speaking former colony with 1.8 million inhabitants, has so far been spared the Islamist-inspired attacks that have taken place in some neighboring countries.

Nine more women say judge subjected them to inappropriate behavior
[WASHINGTONPOST] Nine more women say that Alex Kozinski ‐ a high-profile judge who sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ‐ subjected them to sexual comments or other conduct, including four who say he touched them inappropriately.

Kozinski, known for his libertarian views and colorful written opinions, already had been accused of subjecting several women to a range of inappropriate sexual conduct or comments, and the circuit’s chief judge on Thursday took the first step in launching an investigation into his behavior. The matter was assigned Friday to the 2nd Circuit judicial council.

The new allegations ‐ which span decades and include not just those who worked for Kozinski but also those who encountered him at events ‐ bring the total number of women accusing the judge of inappropriate behavior to at least 15.
