Cleared for publication: Iranian intelligence operating in Judea & Samaria
[IsraelNationalNews] The Israel Security Agency (ISA), with the assistance of the IDF, uncovered and foiled an espionage and recruiting infrastructure operated by Iranian intelligence in Judea and Samaria, which was developed and funded by an Iranian operative living in South Africa.

#5  From the article:

The main terrorist arrested was Muhammad Makharmeh, 29, a computer engineering student residing in Hevron.

Makharmeh was recruited for Iranian intelligence by his relative Bakhar Makharmeh, who stems from the Hevron area but has lived in South Africa in recent years. Bakhar took advantage of Mahramah's trip to South Africa in 2015, and recruited him for Iranian activity.

Muhammad Makharmeh recruited two terrorists from Hevron in order to establish a terror cell: Nur Makharmeh and Dia Serahna, both 22 years old. Interrogations revealed that the two had agreed, together with Muhammad Maharma, to operate in a terror squad under Iranian direction, and received $8,000 in exchange for their activities for the Iranians.

Despite all sorts of grand plans laid out in the article for building the organization, it doesn’t sound like they’d actually got very far. Though perhaps there is more that Shin Bet chose not to reveal to reporters.

Mark Steyn: Welcome to the New Year, Same as the Old
h/t Tim Blair
Happy New Year to you. On the Eighth Day of Christmas the multiculti fetishists gave to us:

An eight o'clock curfew:

...Seven sexual assailants:

...Six stabbers arrested:

...Five homes raided:

...Four women gang-raped:

...Three pubs attacked:

...Two police officers lynched:

...and a canceled New Year in Sydney:

..."Diversity" is where once functioning societies go to die. But who ya gonna believe - the official happy-talk or your acid-scarred eyes?

Identity Politics Works Until You Run Out of Other People
[SultanKnish] Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher famously observed that socialism works until you run out of other people’s money. Identity politics also works until you run out of other people.

And then #MeToo becomes #NotMeToo.

Other people’s money can be borrowed against. That’s why we have the national debt that we do. But identity politics has multiplied too abruptly and explosively to postpone the reckoning much longer. What were once simple categories of three races and two genders has mutated into an infinite alphabet of sexual identities, a Big Bang of ethnicities, national, cultural, racial and religious, each with its own microaggressions, that easily tops two hundred and shows no signs of slowing down its expansion.

Intersectionality, the Das Kapital of identity politics economics, tries to manage the complex network of interactions even as it purges Jews and white people. And now it’s even starting to purge men.

The left is running out of other people.

#MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter, the campus purges of ’whiteness’ and ’toxic masculinity’, the civil wars within the LGBT alphabet soup all point to the ’other people’ crisis of the left. The latest social justice wave has made men, white people and even white gay men into hate objects. The resentment coalition of identity politics is fracturing into a tribal war of identity microgroups against everyone else.

The economics of socialism and the political economics of identity politics both come down to the core leftist creed of redistributing the wealth and privilege supposedly hoarded by a minority. Seize all the wealth from the rich and fund free health care. Take away white privilege and open up society. Open the borders of the United States to the Third World. Shut down factories and end all pollution. Destroy capitalism, the patriarchy, heteronormativity, whiteness and every other strawman raised up by the left.

That is the engine of the three radical R’s of the left: Resentment, Revolution and Redistribution.

It’s a scam. Like every scam, it relies on using the greed of the mark against him. Con artists are in the easy money business. They promise the men and women they scam that they can have easy money. But it’s only the con artist who ends up easily making money out of the deal. That’s the scam the left pulls.

It’s why leftist politics is the greatest and deadliest scam ever perpetrated in human history.

The Russian peasants who were promised their own land were instead chained to feudal collectivist farms. They were reduced to sharecroppers who were unable to leave the lands of their masters. The workers who were promised bread starved in the cities. The soldiers who were promised peace died in a more horrifying war. When Stalin told his mother that he was the new czar, the scam was complete.

It was the same story from the Soviet Union to Communist China, from Cuba to Cambodia, from the ghettoes of blue states to the rusting factories of union shops, from the decaying farmlands of Europe to the blighted working class of Britain. The scam ends with mass misery for everyone except the leftist scammers. The revolutionaries get rich and powerful while everyone else loses everything.

Mueller Grand Jury Looks Like A Bernie Sanders Rally
BLUF:
[Hot Air] "The grand jury room looks like a Bernie Sanders rally," my source said. "Maybe they found these jurors in central casting, or at a Black Lives Matter rally in Berkeley [Calif.]"

Of the 20 jurors, 11 are African-Americans and two were wearing "peace T-shirts," the witness said. "There was only one white male in the room, and he was a prosecutor." Mueller was not present...

Sol Wachtler, the former chief judge in New York, once called for abolishing grand juries because they are so easily manipulated that they would "indict a ham sandwich."

My source said, "That room isn’t a room where POTUS gets a fair shake."

#1  My source said, “That room isn’t a room where POTUS gets a fair shake.”

I think we can be reasonably certain a "fair shake" was never the intent.

I know it sounds outlandish and totally off-the-wall, but now that things have quieted down a bit, perhaps Mr. Mueller could spare a couple of his legal sleuths to have a look into the unsolved Seth Rich murder.

#2  It's nice, but anyone semi-competent prosecutor can pack a grand jury for an indictment. Getting a conviction is another matter particularly when its all predicated upon tainted materials. So, its all show. Dragged into 2018 to be released but not resolved just in time for the mid-terms. Like Alabama, its to suppress Trunk turnout. Trunks had better learn, its all about POWER never about principle.

#5  For some reason I'm reminded of an old joke.
CIA agent been training for 10 years for a mission in Russia. Well, he arrives in Moscow, walks into a bar, sits at the counter and orders. After the third vodka the bartender comes over and says "You're a CIA agent, right?", "No. I'm an ordinary Russian Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov - do I look like a CIA agent?" Bartender: "Well, you're dressed like a Russian, you walk like a Russian, you speak like a Russian, and you drink like a Russian.". Agent: "so what's the problem?". Bartender: "You're black!"

#6  And that reminds me of a Polish joke. A Polish linguistics student was doing research in the deep South on the local accents & language variations. He was trying to see if he could pass himself off as a true Southerner. He went into a store and asked for some "'taters, 'nanas, and 'maters". The storekeeper replied, "You're Polish, aren't you?" The crestfallen student said, "How did you know?" Storekeeper: "This is a hardware store."

Freed Canadian hostage Joshua Boyle faces assault charges
[Reuters] A Canadian man freed in 2017 nearly five years after being abducted in Afghanistan has been arrested in Ottawa and faces several charges, including assault and forcible confinement, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

Joshua Boyle, his wife Caitlin Coleman and three children arrived back in Canada last October. At the time he said one of his children had been murdered and spouse was raped after their capture by the Taliban-allied Haqqani network.

Police have laid 15 charges against Boyle, 34, including eight counts of assault, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of forcible confinement and one count of uttering death threats.
I hope he has been detained in order to prevent anything dreadful from happening to the victims and witnesses.
A publication ban has been imposed, preventing the alleged victims from being identified. "Mr. Boyle is presumed innocent. He’s never been in trouble before ... We look forward to receiving the evidence and defending him against these charges," Boyle’s lawyer, Eric Granger, said in an email.

Ottawa police laid the charges on Dec. 30, since when Boyle has been in jail. He is due to make a brief court appearance on Wednesday. Ottawa police declined to comment and referred questions to the attorney general of Ontario, which was not immediately able to comment.

Boyle, his wife and their three children met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his Parliament Hill office last month. Photos that Boyle released at the time on Twitter showed Trudeau holding the youngest child in his lap.

Trudeau had said in September he could not imagine what the family were going through. The Taliban denied the accusations of rape and murder.

Boyle and Coleman were kidnapped in 2012 while backpacking in Afghanistan and their children were born in captivity. U.S. officials say the family spent almost all their confinement in neighboring Pakistan, which is where they were freed by Pakistani troops.

#1  I see he's lost the mustache and gone traditional Salafist Muslim with the facial hair.

My guess (but not a wild guess) is the victims are the 'surviving' family members. Could of course be more to come regarding the murdered child.

Reuters mentions the "presumption of innocence." A legal term recently fallen out of vogue in the media, but apparently resurrected here for some odd reason.

California hit with ‘Sanctuary State' highway sign prank: ‘Democrats Need The Votes!'
[Wash Times] Pranksters in California with a knack for making highway signs welcomed in the new year with an invitation to "felons, illegals" and members of the MS13 gang.

The Golden State’s reputation for undermining federal immigration laws to shield illegal immigrants prompted the creation of a highway sign in 2017 touting Malibu as a sanctuary city for "cheap nannies and gardeners." A new installment mocks Gov. Jerry Brown’s "sanctuary state" legislation, which went into effect Monday.

"Official Sanctuary State: Felons, Illegals and MS13 welcome. Democrats Need The Votes!" a sign shared by travelers on social media reads.

"OMG! Look at this sign someone put up on the 15 Freeway between LA and Las Vegas!" Twitter user Kambree Kawahine Koa wrote Monday, Fox News reported.

Mr. Brown said in October that new laws were needed to bring "a measure of comfort" to millions of illegal immigrants living in the state.

#2  Off topic perhaps, and I'm certainly not a lawyer, but I'm wondering about old Moonbeam and California's taxation of the newly legalized marijuana. If the state knowingly receives money from a state tax on a substance which it is still a federal felony to possess, does that make him complicit in the commission of a federal felony? Could he not then be prosecuted? I'd love to see that.

Abedin Forwarded State Passwords To Yahoo Before It Was Hacked By Foreign Agents
[Daily Caller] Huma Abedin forwarded sensitive State Department emails, including passwords to government systems, to her personal Yahoo email account before every single Yahoo account was hacked, a Daily Caller News Foundation analysis of emails released as part of a lawsuit brought by Judicial Watch shows.

Abedin, the top aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, used her insecure personal email provider to conduct sensitive work. This guarantees that an account with high-level correspondence in Clinton’s State Department was impacted by one or more of a series of breaches ‐ at least one of which was perpetrated by a "state-sponsored actor."

The U.S. later charged Russian intelligence agent Igor Sushchin with hacking 500 million Yahoo email accounts. The initial hack occurred in 2014 and allowed his associates to access accounts into 2015 and 2016 by using forged cookies. Sushchin also worked for the Russian investment bank Renaissance Capital, which paid former President Bill Clinton $500,000 for a June 2010 speech in Moscow.

A separate hack in 2013 compromised three billion accounts across multiple Yahoo properties, and the culprit is still unclear. "All Yahoo user accounts were affected by the August 2013 theft," the company said in a statement.

Abedin, Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, regularly forwarded work emails to her personal humamabedin@yahoo.com address. "She would use these accounts if her (State) account was down or if she needed to print an email or document. Abedin further explained that it was difficult to print from the DoS system so she routinely forwarded emails to her non-DoS accounts so she could more easily print," an FBI report says.
Yes, much easier to 'print' from your residence and avoid the unsightly carrying of classified documents out of Foggy Bottom, random bag checks, that sort of thing.
Abedin sent passwords for her government laptop to her Yahoo account on Aug. 24, 2009, an email released by the State Department in September 2017 shows.
Still begs the question of how sensitive and classified documents from a secure Gov't computer were migrated to Abedin's UNCLAS email account and non-secure box.

'Ayelet Shaked is the most dangerous minister'
[IsraelNationalNews] Former Labor MK Uzi Baram published in Haaretz an article harshly attacking Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home).

In his article, Baram called Shaked a "walking provocation" and claimed she "supports Hebrew discrimination" and "is trampling the Supreme Court."

According to Baram, Shaked is "truly dangerous, because she wants to replace the expression that 'everything can be judged' with 'everything is political.' In her quest to reach the hearts of her voters, the Justice Minister has abandoned her first duty: to be faithful to the judicial and court systems, which she is supposed to represent."
Actually, she represents Israeli public who are sick and tired of Judicial (EU style) activism

Lancaster Mennonites pack it in.
[Daily Caller] The largest conference of Mennonite churches in the U.S. split from the Mennonite community Monday in a dispute over the denomination’s stance on homosexuality.

The Lancaster Mennonite Conference’s (LMC) 2015 vote to officially leave the U.S. Mennonite Church took effect on New Year’s day as the culmination of dispute over the definition of marriage and whether homosexuality is a sin, according to Religion News. The LMC’s split from the denomination tore the U.S. Mennonite church in two, as it was the largest conference of Mennonite churches in the U.S., comprising 179 church congregations in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

"We are in a sense not really leaving," Steve Olivieri, pastor of Cornerstone Fellowship of Mill Run in Altoona, Penn., told NPR. "They are the ones that essentially have left true biblical Christianity in this respect."

Donald Kraybill, a professor who studies Mennonites and the Amish, told NPR that the LMC’s relatively quick decision to leave the U.S. Mennonite Church in the wake of the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling on gay marriage posed a serious threat to the health of the Mennonite community at large.

Britain
Sadiq's London: Knife Crime, Gun Crime, Theft, Burglary, Rape, Homicide all MASSIVELY Up
[Breitbart] Britain’s media celebrated in droves when London elected its first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, in May 2016. Now the cacophony caused by the "we’re not racist" backslapping has ended, the true implications of a Khan mayoralty are being realised.

In Britain’s capital over the past year, Khan presided over rises in knife crime, gun crime, theft, burglary, rape, homicide, and more. And not just by a little bit, either.

Some in the media ‐ by which I mean basically just me ‐ predicted Khan might be a disaster for London, but the extent to which this is true was beyond even our worst nightmares.

Parking the anecdotal evidence of Khan giving preference to genital mutilation-linked groups, and using his platform to agitate against the U.S. President, the statistics reveal a terrifying incompetence in keeping London safe ‐ one of the mayor’s core areas of responsibility.

Data from the Mayor of London’s Police and Crime Office ‐ led by former lobbyist-turned-Deputy Mayor Sophie Linden ‐ reveals a sharp uptick in violent crime in Khan’s first year.

From the years 2015/16 to 2016/17, homicides in London rose by 27.1 per cent. Youth homicide jumped 70 per cent. Serious youth violence was up 19 per cent. Robbery was up 33.4 per cent, while home burglaries rose by 18.7 per cent.

Theft went up by over 10,000 incidents in a year, up 33.9 per cent, and there were more than 4,000 additional knife crime incidents under Khan than under his predecessor, a rise of 31.3 per cent.

Rape in the capital rose by 18.3 per cent, while there were 2,551 incidents of gun crime, representing a rise of 16.3 per cent on the previous year.

The Mayor has continuously blamed central government "police cuts" for the problems faced, but statistics reveal London only lost around 1,000 police officers (3 per cent) in the past year, reducing the workforce from 31,343 to 30,379.

What No One... the Left is Not Telling You About Iran
BLUF:
[Townhall] But there’s something else going on in Iran that could well be playing an important role in the rising Iranian discontent.

It’s something that has been building and growing under the surface and behind closed doors. And it remains one of the best kept secrets in the world, despite occasional media reports in the last few years: Iranian Muslims are converting to Christianity at an unprecedented pace.

I’ve heard this firsthand from Iranian converts. I’ve heard it firsthand from Christian leaders who have worked with these converts inside and outside of Iran. And I’ve heard it from missiologists whose job it is to track such things.

And it’s reminiscent of the conversion of tens of millions of Chinese behind the cover of the Bamboo Curtain. Missiologists were reporting it for years before the rest of the world found out about it. Now, it is an open secret, leading to headlines like this, from April 14, 2014, in the UK Telegraph: "China on course to become 'world's most Christian nation' within 15 years. The number of Christians in Communist China is growing so steadily that it by 2030 it could have more churchgoers than America."

#1  We’ve discussed that off and on here at Rantburg, though never with such concrete numbers for Iran. There was the interview on Al Jazeera where a sheikh claimed six million Muslims convert to Christianity a year in Africa alone. The original video disappeared long ago. Fortunately, it was cached in a number of places and republished. See here for the key five minutes.

Trump launches 2018 with tweet tornado on Huma, DACA, Kim, NYT and more
[FoxNews] Now we know what President Trump's New Year's resolution was – to tweet more.

The president kicked off his first full day back at the White House since the holidays with a tweet storm, taking aim at Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin and The New York Times, weighing in on the threat posed by North Korea and the upcoming fight over the Obama-era DACA program, amid other topics.

Coming as Congress returned to the Capitol, Trump's ten tweets on Tuesday served as a reminder that the famously prolific tweeter-in-chief has no intention of curbing his frequent Twitter use – despite the desires of some Republicans in the White House and on Capitol Hill.

Scholars Call For Somalia To Be Protected From Foreign Interference
[RADIOSHABELLE] The Commission of Somali Scholars called on Sunday for politicians to protect their country from "foreign interference" and to respect its illusory sovereignty, Anadolu reported on Sunday.

In a statement issued in response to the latest upheaval, the scholars expressed their concerns about the "unstable political situation" in Somalia over many months.

They called for efforts to adopt the "rule of reason and a constructive policy" instead of one driven by tribal interests. The latter, they said, has taken the country into chaos.

Insisting that the Somali government should aim for justice and equality in society, they stressed that it should also respect individual rights. The Moslem scholars added a warning about the use of "extrajudicial forces" leading to "sedition and unnecessary consequences."

In conclusion, the group reiterated the importance of unity and warned the government about the consequences of division in society.

Pervnado's Latest Victim - U of AZ Head Coach Rich Rodriguez
Did I say head coach? Sorry, I meant former head coach!
[BleacherReport] Arizona fired head football coach Rich Rodriguez on Tuesday after the Wildcats finished a 7-6 season.

According to Dan Wolken of USA Today, the school made the official announcement regarding Rodriguez's firing Tuesday evening. Brett McMurphy reported "Arizona has fired Rich Rodriguez in part after sexual harassment allegations against him that the school says could not be substantiated."

Wolken previously reported Tuesday the school was "weighing whether to fire" him and noted "the school also has been dealing with a troubling allegation behind the scenes that led school officials last fall to hire an outside law firm to investigate Rodriguez for potential workplace misconduct."
While he's not a Rick Pitino level dirtbag, the last three places he's left (West Virginia - broke a contract; Michigan - verbally abused his players, and now Arizona) have all been less than on exemplary terms. He's done as a big-time football coach, which means he'll be coaching at my alma mater ( Univ. of New Hampshire) next year...

Europe
Refugees in Greece reflect on another year of waiting
[Al Jazeera] Closed borders, racism, xenophobic attacks, rejected asylum applications, poverty and lengthy waits.

These experiences are what many refugees and migrants colonists in Greece say defined 2017 for them.

More than 60,000 refugees and migrants colonists are trapped in Greece due to sealed borders across the so-called Balkan route and the March 2016 deal between The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
, which was sculpted to stem the flow of displaced people to Europe.

That deal has been roundly condemned by rights groups and watchdogs.

More than 15,000 refugees and migrants colonists have been confined to Greek islands by a government policy that bars them from moving to the mainland until their asylum procedures have been completed.

Although arrivals sharply decreased after the EU-Turkey deal, the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
refugee agency (UNHCR) statistics say that more than 170,317 people made the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean Sea in 2017.

At least 3,081 died or went missing along the way.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, some refugees in Greece explained that they no longer feel welcome, while others said they have started to build their lives from scratch.

Fearless Leader: Enemies deploying various tools to hurt Islamic establishment
[PRESSTV] Fearless Leader of the Islamic Revolution
...Iran's doddering head theocrat...
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
...the successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the actual dictator of Iran...
says enemies have been using various tools to deal blows to the land of the Medes and the Persians and the Islamic establishment in the course of the latest developments in the country.

"During the events of the past several days, Iran’s enemies, using the various tools at their disposal, including money, weapons, politics, and security apparatus, have allied [with one another] to create problems for the Islamic establishment," the Leader said on Tuesday.

Ayatollah Khamenei, however, described "the spirit of courage, sacrifice and faith" in the land of the Medes and the Persians as an obstacle in the way of the enemy.

The Leader made the remarks during an address to a weekly meeting with a number of deaders' families.

Ayatollah Khamenei referred to the woeful situation besetting certain West Asian and North African countries, which have been the target of foreign invasion.

The Leader commemorated the sacrifices made by Iranian soldiers who fought and bit the dust during the 1980-88 war with Iraq.

Had the enemy found its way into Iran during the eight-year war, "they would have had no mercy and a situation considerably worse than that of Libya and Syria would have been created for Iran," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Commandos eliminated seven members of the Taliban "Red Unit" defending the compound and detained an additional four fighters. The Afghan special operators also seized IED components, explosives, and a large cache of ammunition.

This is the third high-profile rescue by a Commando unit in the past two months. On Dec. 18, a team of Afghan Special Security Forces and local police rescued an imprisoned village elder who refused to collect illegal taxes imposed by the Taliban in Sharana district, Paktika

US soldier killed and four wounded on Afghanistan border
[BBC] A US service member was killed and four US troops were maimed during a "combat engagement" in Afghanistan on New Year's Day, the Pentagon has said.

The soldier died in Achin, Nangarhar

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS).

The Pentagon did not release additional details or identify the US soldier who was killed.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our own," an official said.

"At this very difficult time our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of our fallen and maimed brothers," said Army Gen John Nicholson, commander of US forces in Afghanistan.

At least 15 Americans died in Afghanistan in 2017, according to icasulties.org, which tracks US deaths in foreign conflicts.

The Pentagon, which did not describe how the death occurred, said that two of the maimed soldiers are still recovering "in a nearby medical treatment facility and are in stable, pH balanced condition".

The other two injured soldiers have been returned to active duty, the statement said.

issued a stern warning to North Korea on Tuesday, saying the US "will never accept a nuclear North Korea."

"As we hear reports that North Korea might be preparing for another missile test -- I hope that does not happen, but if it does -- we must bring even more measures to bear on the North Korea regime," she said. "The civilized world must remain united and vigilant against the rogue state's nuclear arsenal. We will never accept a nuclear North Korea."

Michele Bachmann eyeing run for Franken's Senate seat
[CNN] Former GOP congresswoman and presidential candidate Michele Bachmann says she is considering running for Democratic former Sen. Al Franken's Minnesota seat.

Bachmann, who was a member of Congress representing Minnesota until 2015, told "The Jim Bakker Show" in an interview that aired last week that she's mulling over whether she should run. Franken announced he would leave the Senate following accusations that he had groped several women, and his final day as a senator is Tuesday.

"I've had people contact me and urge me to run for that Senate seat," Bachmann said. "The only reason I would run is for the ability to take these principles into the United States Senate," she said, later adding, "The question is should it be me? Should it be now? But there's also a price you pay. And the price is bigger than ever because the swamp is so toxic."

"We're trying to be wise," Bachmann continued, suggesting that Franken was dropped by Democrats because the party wants to be able to hurl false accusations against Republicans in coming elections.

"I'm not saying that he didn't do some bad boy things. I think he did. But he didn't do what Harvey Weinstein did. ... But the Democrat party, they even admit they threw Al Franken under the bus because they wanted to look pure," she said.

Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch to retire, clearing way for Mitt Romney
[CNN] Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch
...Republican Senator-for-Life from Utah. The state does have two senators but nobody can remember who the other guy is...
announced Tuesday that he won't seek re-election this year, clearing the way for Willard Mitt Romney
...former governor of Massachussetts, the Publican nominee for president in 2012. He is the son of the former governor of Michigan, George Romney, who himself ran for president after saving American Motors from failure, though not permanently. Romney has a record as a successful businessman, heading Bain Capital, and he rescued the 2002 Winter Olympics from the midst of bribery and mismanagement scandals....
to return to the national stage by running for his seat.

He said in a social media message, "after much prayer and discussion with family and friends I've decided to retire at the end of this term."

Hatch, the Senate's longest serving Republican, has wrestled with the decision for months, emboldened by the entreaties of President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

Iraq
Nearly 37,000 people killed in Iraq in 2017, U.S. website claims
Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) ‐ A U.S. website has claimed that at least 36,898 people were killed, and another 8,753 were maimed in Iraq during 2017.

According to a report published by the Antiwar.com on Tuesday, at least 9,036 non-combatants were killed, and another 6,607 were maimed in Iraq last year.

Speaking about casualties among coppers, the U.S. website reported that at least 1,696 security personnel were killed and 1,827 were maimed.

"In September, Coalition forces revealed that over 1,200 Iraqi soldiers were killed during the djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
campaign alone, nearly doubling the number of dead," the report read.

The website quoted Kurdish intelligence as reporting in July a belief that at least 40,000 non-combatants were killed in Mosul alone.

"Among the Death Eaters, at least 24,276 were killed, and 309 were maimed. Unlike the civilian and security casualties, the number of Death Eater dead could be an exaggeration, or it could also be a low number," the report explained.

"These figures should be considered lowball estimates, especially considering that the number of casualties being reported publicly was reduced," the report read.

"The Iraqi government chose to censor information about security casualties and perhaps even civilian ones. Consequently, at the end of 2016, the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
was hectored into limiting the number of casualties it was allowed to compile on the ground," it concluded.

Science
Scientists Find Alzheimer's Treatment While Trying To Cure Diabetes
[NYCBSlocal] Although their goal was to cure diabetes, scientists may have stumbled onto a new medication to help treat the devastating effects of Alzheimer's disease.

According to a press release from researchers at Lancaster University, a new drug being tested for diabetes patients was found to have "significantly reversed memory loss" in test subjects and is now being examined as possible treatment for neurodegenerative disorders.

The medication, known as a triple receptor drug ‐ or "triple agonist" ‐ reportedly works in multiple ways to protect the brain against degeneration and promote growth. Researchers say that a study of mice being given the drug found that the animals had an increased ability to learn and retain memories.

"These very promising outcomes demonstrate the efficacy of these novel multiple receptor drugs that originally were developed to treat type 2 diabetes," Professor Christian Holscher said in the release.

The scientists added that the mice showed a decrease in chronic inflammation and amyloid plaques in the brain, which have been linked to the development of Alzheimer's in people.

"With no new treatments in nearly 15 years, we need to find new ways of tackling Alzheimer's," Dr. Doug Brown of the Alzheimer's Society said. "It's imperative that we explore whether drugs developed to treat other conditions can benefit people with Alzheimer's."

The discovery of the diabetes drug's side-effect is not a complete coincidence to the researchers. The findings, published in the journal Brain Research, point to the link between some of the symptoms of diabetes and their link to Alzheimer's. Insulin desensitisation is not only one of the key effects suffered by diabetes patients, the hormone's lack of production has also reportedly been observed in the brains of people affected by the memory-stealing disorder.

the brain evolved out of genes for the immune system and genes involved with inflammation in the body are involved with removing memories in the brain. The brain has it's own separate immune system.

#3  isn't this treatment the premise for the story, "Flowers for Algernon" and then the movie "Charlie"

Charlie was mentally retarded in Flowers for Algernon, functioning at the trainable level. The treatment gave him new abilities rather than restoring what had been lost. That book particularly resonated for me because my mother pioneered training programs for mentally retarded children and adults, and created a sheltered workshop for those capable of being trained to do simple assembly work. So I spent quite a few of my days off from school among them, and was keenly aware of how much they yearned to be smart like everyone else.

#4  Victoza is one of the 3 things they were looking at. Its been researched by itself not only for diabetes, but as an appetite suppression drug, and as of 5 years ago, it was seen in humans to have reduced ro reversed the plaques of Alzheimers. Basically they were doing alzeimers brain studies post-mortem on a group, and found a subset of the deceased who had dramatic reductions in brain plaques and Alzheimers. The only thing they all had in common was that they were part of a clinical trial of Victoza and had used it for several years.

So this is good news. If accurate this may not only prevent it, but might reverse Alzheimers to some extent.

Godhana said rising crime has led to residents in Lamu, Tana River and Garissa living in fear, which has hurt development.

The governor issued a New Year’s speech during celebrations at the county headquarters in Hola yesterday. Godhana said terrorist attacks have increased, despite the heavy presence of security personnel.

He said if men, youth, and women are given guns, they would go into the forest and wipe out al-Shabaab.

"If the government has failed let it give us the permission to work as Tana River, Ijara, and Lamu and come up with a solution,’’ he said. The governor spoke two days after a Police land-cruiser was stolen and a section of Ijara AP station in Garissa burnt by al-Shabaab on Friday night.

Death toll in Iran protests rises to 20
[ANINEWS.IN] As anti-government protests continued in Iran for the fifth consecutive day between the Iranian security forces and protestors, the official corpse count has risen to 20.

At least 17 protestors and three security personnel have died in the ongoing protests so far, as reported by al-Arabiya.

A policeman was killed and three others were maimed by a bullet fired by a demonstrator in the city of Najafabad in Isfahan province of central Iran.

Around five protestors were killed in the city of Qahdregan, also located in Isfahan province.

According to few unconfirmed sources, the protestors tried to break into the city hall's building. Also, two more men from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were reported to be killed.

On Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the people of Iran were free to protest peacefully, but rejected protesting by violence. The authorities have also blocked two popular social media apps - Telegram and Instagram - as a security measure.

Iran is still witnessing a wave of demonstrations, being held in many cities across the country as people took to raising anti-government slogans, over alleged corruption and rising prices that have plagued the people of the country earlier in this week.

Formerly detained minister joins Saudi cabinet meeting
[Al Jazeera] A Saudi minister, who was recently detained in the Kingdom's alleged anti-corruption crackdown, has attended a weekly cabinet meeting, according to state media.

Ibrahim al-Assaf, a state minister and former finance minister, was among dozens of bigwigs, businessmen and members of the royal family who were held in November.

The sweeping crackdown was seen by some as an attempt to strengthen the power of Mohammed bin Salman, crown prince and heir to the Saudi throne.

On Tuesday, the official SPA news agency shared images of al-Assaf at the meeting, which is also attended by Mohammed bin Salman.

Assaf was reportedly released last month.

He has been in office as state minister since November 2016

The 68-year-old PhD holder in economics is also a board member of national oil giant, Saudi Aramco.

He has also held positions at the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

"Set course for Pitcairne Island!"
"Aye, sir! If we can make it that far!"

In a briefing on the matter, the committee was told that Karachi receives around 500 million gallons of water every day and subsequently, an equal quantity of polluted water is dumped into the sea on a daily basis.

The Senate body was further told that the toxic waste of industries was also released into the sea without being treated.

The committee was informed that the rising amount of pollution would cause massive problems for the country and the health and well-being of its citizens if instant measures are not taken to fix the issue.

According to a survey conducted by United Nations

Last year, the National Assembly's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had been informed that around 472 million gallons of sewerage were being released into the sea on a daily basis.

Trump's 'incomprehensible' accusations contradict facts, negate Pakistani sacrifices: NSC
[DAWN] Participants of the seventeenth meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) on Tuesday expressed "deep disappointment" at the allegations levelled against Pakistain by US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, saying the accusations strike at the trust between the two countries and negate the sacrifices rendered by the Pak nation.

Chaired by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and attended by high-level civil-military leadership, the meeting observed that Pakistain has fought the war against terrorism primarily using its own resources and at a great cost to its economy.

"... even more importantly the huge sacrifices made by Pakistain, including the loss of tens of thousands of lives ... could not be trivialised so heartlessly by pushing all of it behind a monetary value ‐ and that too an imagined one," a blurb issued after the meeting in Islamabad said, in a reference to Trump's claim that the US has "foolishly" given Pakistain over $33 billion in aid over the last 15 years.

Trump threatens to cut off US aid to Palestinian Authority
Ay-Pee. Abu Mazen's bluff is called
Acknowledging his push to broker peace in the Middle East has stalled, President Donald Trump on Tuesday appeared to threaten to cut off U.S. aid money to the Palestinian Authority, saying they were no longer willing to negotiate.

Trump, in a pair of tweets, said the U.S. pays "the Palestinians HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect. They don't even want to negotiate a long overdue ... peace treaty with Israel."

"We have taken Jerusalem, the toughest part of the negotiation, off the table, but Israel, for that, would have had to pay more. But with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?" he wrote.

Trump infuriated many in the Middle East when he announced late last year that the U.S. would consider Jerusalem the capital of Israel and move its embassy there.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said the announcement destroyed Trump's credibility as a Mideast peace broker, calling the decision "a declaration of withdrawal from the role it has played in the peace process."

Tuesday's tweets mark a tacit admission by Trump that his decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has thrown a wrench into his administration's plans to restart the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians. Trump tasked son-in-law Jared Kushner to restart the effort, and brought his former attorney, Jason Greenblatt, into the White House to lead the negotiations ‐ which he had dubbed "the ultimate deal."

On Twitter, Trump also issued a threat to cut off foreign aid dollars to an unspecified list of countries that don't reciprocate.

Egypt executes four Islamist extremists over 2015 bomb attack
[AlAhram] Egypt has executed four Islamist snuffies convicted of killing three military-academy students in a kaboom almost three years ago.

The four men were executed at the Borg al-Arab prison in Alexandria early on Tuesday.

The bombing took place in April 2015 outside a stadium in the Nile Delta city of Kafr El-Sheikh as the students were waiting for a bus to take them to the academy. Six people were also maimed in the attack.

In June, a military court in Alexandria upheld death sentences against seven defendants convicted of the killings. Three were sentenced in absentia and are still being sought by police.

Tuesday's executions bring the number of snuffies executed over the past week to 19.
Ynet adds:
The four were hanged for their role in a bombing in the Nile Delta town of Kafr al-Sheikh that took place during violence that followed the ouster of President Mohammed Mursi of the Moslem Brüderbund. Sisi, then the military chief, removed Mursi in mid-2013 after mass protests against Mursi's rule.
And An Nahar makes it explicit:
The four had been accused of having links with the Moslem Brüderbund movement of former president Mohammed Morsi whom the army toppled in 2013 following protests against his single year in office.

Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – Fifteen Islamic State militants were killed during a security campaign on the Iraqi-Syrian border, a police spokesman said.

“The security operation was launched after tracking down the Islamic State cell for a few days,” he said, adding that the troops seized medium arms and explosive belts.

Iran Reopens All Border Posts with Iraqi Kurdistan
[AnNahar] Iran on Tuesday reopened the last two border posts with Iraqi Kurdistan that it closed in response to an independence vote rejected by Baghdad and neighbouring countries, officials said.

The Iranian consulate in the Kurdish autonomous region's capital Arbil announced the Parwezkhan and Haji Omran posts were beginning work again "from Tuesday".

A Kurdish front man at Parwezkhan confirmed the post had "reopened officially at 0900 (0600 GMT)" after notification was received from the Iranian side.

The opening of the two posts means that all crossings on the border between Iran and Iraqi Kurdistan are now up and running after a third post at Bashmaq started working again in October.

Iran first announced on December 18 the reopening of all its border posts with Iraqi Kurdistan, without setting a specific date.

Iraq's Kurds voted overwhelmingly in a controversial non-binding referendum in September to establish their own country, but the vote was deemed illegal by the central government.

Neighbouring Iran and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
also condemned the poll over concerns that it could stir up their own Kurdish minorities.

In the wake of the vote Baghdad moved to isolate the region by imposing an international flight ban -- recently extended through February -- and urging neighbouring nations to sever links.

Federal forces then retook swathes of disputed territory from the Kurds, wrestling back control of key oil-rich regions that were a major source of income for the region.

The calamitous fallout from the independence vote has sparked an economic and political crisis in Iraqi Kurdistan that has seen angry protests in a string of towns.

Kurdish govt: no handover of borders to Iraq, joint management instead
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Kurdistan government has rejected handing over the autonomous region’s border management to the Iraqi federal cabinet, saying that the law instead provides for joint administration.

"Instructions and laws emphasize on joint administration and oversight on border crossings, and the region is prepared to discuss matters related to airports and border crossings,"Safeen Dizayee, a spokesperson of the Kurdish government, told Iraqi website Alghad Press.

"There is no phrase in the law or the instructions that provide for handing over crossings and airports, but instead for a joint administration", Dizayee said, adding that "Kurdistan Region was, from the beginning, for resolving the problem through dialogue, and certainly technical issues require dialogue more than anything else".

Dizayee added that no talks have been held between Baghdad and Erbil to that end. ’We can see a desire (to hold talks) from our brothers in Baghdad according to statements by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

A crisis erupted between Baghdad and Erbil following Kurdistan Region’s vote in September to secede from Iraq, a measure which Baghdad deemed unconstitutional, consequently taking penal economic measures that included an air embargo and a withholding of employee payments.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ihsan al-Shamri, an adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, said the government adopted a number of decisions towards dialogue with Erbil, which involve "(Baghdad’s) taking over of Kurdistan’s border crossings with Iran and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
, and forming a high committee to regulate land ports, customs and airports".

Speaking to the Iraqi independent New Sabah newspaper on Monday, cabinet front man Saad al-Hadithi said technical talks with Kurdistan were "necessary" to resolve pending issues including "border crossings, airports, oil fields and their exports, water resources and the Region’s employee salaries".

Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) announced on Tuesday.

The worst affected province, according to UNAMI, was Baghdad with 122 civilian casualties (24 killed, 98 injured). Salahuddin ranked the second place, with 7 killed and 25 injured, then Kirkuk came third with 15 killed and 6 injured.

"Casualty figures for the month of December 2017 have remained at a similar level to November, which is disappointing," Ján Kubiš, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq, said. "I very much hope that, as we move in the new year, these figures will fall rapidly as much-needed peace and stability return to Iraq."

The figures saw a significant decline from November’s which reached a total of 117 Iraqi civilians killed and another 264 injured.

According to the UNAMI report, 3298 non-combatants were killed and 4781 others were maimed in 2017, excluding Anbar civilian casualty figures for November and December, which are not available.

Hamas demands formal end to peace process
[ISRAELNATIONALNEWS] Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", leader Ismail Haniya called today for the formulation of a new overall strategy aimed at thwarting US and Israeli decisions on Jerusalem and re-positioning the Paleostinian issue as a national liberation struggle centered on "popular intifada".

Speaking at a presser Haniya stressed the importance of formulating "a united Arab-Islamic plan in coordination with international bodies that support Paleostinian rights" and feel wronged by US policy in the region.

In order to preempt the "American blockade", Haniya suggested working on two political levels: One - declaring the end of the grinding of the peace processor, and the other - a demand to cease all aspects of normalization with Israel.

He accused Israel of seeking to ignite religious wars in the region in order to exhaust the Arab states and involve them in their internal problems. Haniyeh said that the "war for Al Quds" would be decided "in the streets, hills, and houses of Jerusalem and the rest of the Paleostinian areas through struggle and determination".

Hamas continues to incite the Arab public into confrontations with Israel, in addition to attempting numerous terror attacks from Judea and Samaria and persuading the Paleostinian Authority to renounce the Oslo Accords, stop security coordination, and return to confrontation with Israel as a policy instrument.

“Ten Islamic State militants were arrested while trying to infiltrate into Sumer area in eastern Mosul,” the source told Baghdad Today.

“The arrest was made during the troops’ combing of the area,” the source said, adding that the IS terrorists were carrying fake IDs when arrested.

Egypt extends state of emergency for three months starting Jan 13: official gazette
Unexpectedly.
[AlAhram] Egypt has extended a nationwide state of emergency for a further three months, starting 13 January, state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
MENA said on Tuesday.

The decree authorizes the army and police to undertake the necessary procedures to combat terrorism in order to preserve the safety of citizens and public properties across the nation.

The state of emergency was first imposed in April 2017 after two church bombings killed 47 people. It was then extended in July.

A new decree further lengthening it was issued in October. According the Egyptian constitution, a state of emergency cannot exceed six months from its date of declaration and decrees imposing or extending it should be approved by the parliament.

The new decree by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi was published in the official state gazette on Tuesday.

Palestinian terror chief in Lebanon camp says he's moved to Syria
[Ynet] A prominent Paleostinian terrorist whose followers have fought other factions in a refugee camp in Leb has travelled to Syria, he said, removing one of the main combatants in one of Leb's most volatile settlements.

A statement by Bilal Badr, who led a hard-line Sunni Islamist faction against mainstream Paleostinian groups in the Ein el-Hellhole refugee camp at Sidon, did not say when or how he had travelled to Syria.

The rebellion against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

has drawn krazed killer Sunnis from across the region. After fighting in Ein el-Hellhole in August, Paleostinian groups urged wanted security suspects to leave the camp.

Badr's statement addressed his supporters "from the land of jihad and glory, from Assad's lair in Syria, to which we migrated to support the religion of God."

Police probe Berlin U-Bahn knife attacker for Islamist motive
[TheLocal.de] Berlin police said on Tuesday they were unable to rule out an Islamist background after a "deranged" Syrian knifeman was locked away

over an attack in one of the German capital's underground stations.

Witnesses said the 23-year-old, identified as Ahmad al-H., attacked several people with a knife "for no apparent reason" at the Bayerischer Platz station in southwestern Berlin on New Year's Eve, according to a police report.

But the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported that he had asked one 50-year-old German man his nationality and called him an "infidel" before stabbing him.

The man suffered a light injury but declined medical treatment, police said.

Other people attacked by the knife wielder including a mother with a young child escaped unharmed, according to Tagesspiegel.

Police said only that the attacker - who the paper reported was known to officers after being involved in several brawls - "seemed deranged" when they arrested him in response to emergency calls.

Following the arrest, officers brought the knifeman to a clinic and had him examined by a psychiatrist.

"We can't confirm or deny (the reports), we are checking whether there may be an Islamist background," a police front man told AFP.

The investigation has been passed to a unit which deals with politically motivated crimes, according to the police report.

Knesset's al-Quds vote is an end to peace process: Palestine's Abbas
[PRESSTV] Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
has said that Knesset’s passing of a law that requires two-thirds of its members to approve any ceding land in Jerusalem al-Quds is a "declaration of war."

"The Israeli Knesset’s vote on the united Jerusalem law is equivalent to a declaration of war on the Paleostinian people and its political and religious identity," said Nabil Abu Rudeinah, Abbas' front man, on Tuesday.

He added that the Tel Aviv regime has already begun to impose its dictatorial rule on Paleostinians living in the occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds.

"This vote clearly indicates that the Israeli side has officially declared the end of what is called the political process and has begun imposing a policy of dictates," he added.

Abbas also stressed that Israel was not capable of such actions without the full support of the US government.

Israeli politicians on Tuesday approved the amendment to an existing legislation, raising the number of required votes from 61 to 80 in the 120-seat parliament (Knesset) before the regime can relinquish control over any portion of the holy city to a "foreign party."

Pakistan summons US ambassador over Trump tweet
[ARABNEWS] Pakistain has summoned the US ambassador to protest against a tweet by President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
that accused Islamabad of providing "safe haven to terrorists" and deceiving Washington in the war on terror.

Ambassador David Hale visited the Foreign Office late Monday to discuss the tweet, US Embassy front man Richard Snelsire said Tuesday.

This latest diplomatic row broke out when Trump, in his first tweet of the year, said the US had "foolishly given Pakistain more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years," and had not received anything in return "but lies & deceits."

This elicited a swift response from Pakistain’s Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, who said: "Trump’s ’no more’ does not hold any importance."

Asif said US financial assistance was reimbursement of expenses that Pakistain incurred in operations against Lion of Islams, and compensation for logistical facilities made available to coalition forces fighting in Afghanistan.

"We are ready to account for all the financial assistance that Pakistain has received from the US," he said. "All the monetary assistance was properly audited."

Indonesia introduces new Internet censorship system

[ARABNEWS] Indonesia’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Ministry is set to implement a new $14 million Internet censorship system from Wednesday. The new system will automatically block pornography and other content deemed to be unsuitable by the government, following years of manual monitoring which has failed to adequately police the abundance of illicit online content.

The ministry’s Information Applications Director General Semuel Pangerapan said the machine is equipped with artificial intelligence that will crawl websites and use keywords to detect inappropriate content.

"After the content is crawled, our team will evaluate and verify the data," Pangerapan told Arab News. "We will then block sites that are validated as carrying negative content. This machine will make our

jobs a lot faster." The new system will enable the ministry to identify a range of negative content referencing topics from gambling, terrorism, fraud and drugs, to hoaxes and fake news, he added.

The ministry cooperates with related government agencies including the national counterterrorism agency (BNPT) to examine Death Eater material, and the national anti-narcotics agency (BNN) to detect content related to narcotics.

'Islamic State' seeks new foothold in Africa
[DW] French President Emmanuel Macron found clear words on terrorism in Africa during his recent visit to Niger.

"The fight is not won today," Macron said. Within the next few months, one thing was needed above all: "Clear victories for our armed forces against the terrorists."

In Niger, as with most other countries in the region, few such successes can be claimed.

Jihadi forces have established footholds across the Sahel, in Chad, Mali, and indeed Niger. And the prospects of defeating them and neutralizing their ideology are far from good. At the very least, considerable efforts are required from French and other western troops, together with local forces, to rein in jihadism in the region.

Alternative territory in Africa
Macron's urgent focus on the next six months was no accident. That's because the so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (IS) has recently lost large areas that it used to control in Iraq and Syria. Now it's trying to make up for that lost ground elsewhere, including western Africa. IS fighters in Niger recently showed just how dangerous and combative they can be. Early in October, soldiers from the US and Niger clashed with gunnies associated with IS on the border with Mali. The battle claimed the lives of four US and five Nigerien troops.

IS "has aspirations to establish a larger presence" in Africa, according to US General Joseph Dunford. He said after the October attack that the US military would make recommendations to President Donald Trump

... the endangered South Carolina RINO, fellow maverick of Honest John McCain...
found more blunt words: "The war is morphing. We're going to see more actions in Africa, not less."

At the rally, Saeed said: "The entire Pakistain and Moslems are very angry with him [Trump]. We condemn the thought [tweet] Trump has said. We are not jealous of the American Government."

He also added that although the US had provided aid to them for the past many years, he rejected Trump's claims of the aid used for providing safe havens to terror camps in the country.

Saeed also said the JuD would teach him a lesson.

Trump, in a strongly-worded tweet, had earlier said the US had been 'foolishly' providing military aid to Pakistain for 15 years, but in return, it has only received 'lies and deceit.'

"The United States has foolishly given Pakistain more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the holy warriors we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!" Trump posted on the micro-blogging site, on Monday.

The tweet came in the wake of the JuD chief looking to contest the 2018 general elections in Pakistain and thereby, forming a party by the name of Milli Moslem League (MML).

Europe
France vows crackdown after New Year attack on police
[AlAhram] The French government vowed a crackdown on urban violence Tuesday after shocking video footage emerged of a policewoman being beaten on New Year's Eve.

She was one of two officers attacked by a crowd of youths after police were called to a party in the Gay Paree suburb of Champigny-sur-Marne, in an assault President Emmanuel Macron called "a cowardly and criminal lynching".

A third officer was beaten up Monday while trying to inspect a stolen scooter inside a sprawling housing estate in the suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois.

More than a thousand cars were burned across La Belle France on New Year's Eve, a ritual for youths living in deprived high-rise suburbs.

"This violent society cannot continue in the years to come. It must be stopped," Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
1 radio on Tuesday, calling the attacks against police "unacceptable".

Officers had been called to clear a crowd of three or four hundred people attempting to see in 2018 at a warehouse party in Champigny-sur-Marne.

They fired tear gas after "a group of particularly violent individuals laid into the police," local security chief Jean-Yves Oses said, with revellers beating and kicking two officers.

Videos of the policewoman writhing on the floor as she is kicked by the crowd, as well as revellers flipping over a car, have gone viral on social media.

Two people were detained on suspicion of vandalism, but no one has been jugged
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
for attacking the police. Macron vowed that the culprits would be "found and punished".

A total of 1,031 cars were torched across La Belle France as the country welcomed the New Year -- up from 935 a year ago -- while arrests rose from 456 to 510, according to the interior ministry.

Collomb said reforms were needed to improve lives in "pauperised, ghettoised" French suburbs, which have long suffered a reputation for violence and poverty.

"These are neighbourhoods that must change," Collomb said, ahead of new pilot schemes in local policing set to begin next month following a large-scale consultation with security forces.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen urged reforms to laws governing coppers' right to self-defence, blasting "insecurity that sometimes comes close to that of urban guerillas" in tough neighbourhoods.

Macron set out a raft of policies to fight poverty in downtrodden districts in November after critics labelled him a "president of the rich" due to his generous tax cuts for high earners.

He reached out to the poor again in his New Year's message, promising a "grand social project" in 2018.

French police have long suffered testy relations with youths in poor immigrant-heavy suburbs, not least since the nationwide riots in 2005 sparked by the death of two teenagers who were electrocuted while hiding from officers.

The assault of a young man by police in Aulnay-sous-Bois -- which led to officers being charged, including for rape after a truncheon was shoved up the youth's anus -- sparked fresh unrest last year.

An attack on two officers who were badly burned when Molotov cocktails were thrown into their car in the southern Gay Paree suburbs in October 2016 prompted weeks of protests by police demanding safer working conditions.

HRW to Iran: Investigate Killings of Protesters, Halt Use of Excessive Force Against Demonstrators
[ARABNEWS] Iranian authorities should refrain from using excessive force, investigate the deaths during the current protests across the country, and remove arbitrary restrictions on Internet access, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

So far, the official news channels of the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) have confirmed the deaths of at least 21 people including two security officers during the protests and festivities with security forces over the past five days. The protests began on December 29, 2017, in the city of Mashhad and have spread to more than a dozen cities in Iran.

"The rising corpse count bodes ill for Iranians who are daring to take their grievances to the streets," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. "Rather than issue barely veiled threats against protesters, the authorities should investigate these deaths, ensure the rights of all detainees, and guarantee that people can protest freely and peacefully."

On January 2, the IRIB news channel confirmed the death of nine people including two security forces in protests and festivities that took place the day before in Isfahan province. Earlier, the IRIB confirmed the death of 10 individuals on December 31. Authorities had also confirmed the death of two people in Dorood, Lorestan province on December 30.

Police have confirmed the arrests of more than 550 people in the Tehran, Razavi Khorasan, and Markazi provinces.

Intelligence authorities have also placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
a number of activists during the past few days.

Social media footage and state media reports indicate that in certain cities, festivities between protesters and police forces occurred and public properties being damaged. A number of videos circulating widely on Persian-language social media channels also purport to show authorities using potentially lethal force against protesters, but Human Rights Watch has been unable to verify this footage.

On January 1, Mashahalh Nemati, governor of Dorood, a city in Lorestan province, confirmed the deaths of four residents during festivities there on December 29 and 30. He also described an incident on December 30 in which he claimed a 12-year-old boy and his father were killed when a fire engine taken over by rioters hit their car. He said the rioters later abandoned the fire engine.

On the same day, Hedayatollah Khademi, a member of parliament from the city of Izeh in Khuzistan province, told ILNA news agency, the Iranian Labor News Agency, that two people had died in "unrest" in the city on December 31, but that he could not confirm their causes of death. Khademi also denied allegation on social media that people had occupied government buildings.

Social media accounts said that the police shot and killed Masoud Kiani Ghale Sardi, a protester in the city of Izeh. Human Rights Watch has not been able to confirm those accounts.

Saeed Shahrokhi, the political deputy to the governor of Hamedan province, told IRIB that three protesters were killedin the city of Tuyserkan.

On December 29, Hassan Heidari, deputy prosecutor of the city of Mashhad, announced that 52 people had been arrested for "damaging public property." Shargh newspaper, close to reformists in Iran, reported that authorities had arrested 200 people in Tehran and 100 people in the city of Arak in Marakzai province on December 30. On January 2, Ali Asghar Naserbakht, the political deputy to the Tehran’s governor’s office, confirmed the arrest of 200 people in Tehran on December 30, adding that 150 were arrested on December 31 and 100 more on January 1

NBC names Hoda Kotb as Lauer replacement on ‘Today’
[ARABNEWS] NBC News opened the new year Tuesday by appointing Hoda Kotb as co-anchor of the "Today" show’s first two hours with Savannah Guthrie, replacing Matt Lauer following his firing on sexual misconduct charges in late November. Kotb, 53, will continue to co-host the show’s fourth hour with Kathie Lee Gifford.

It will be the first all-female team headlining "Today" in the show’s 65-year history. Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts blazed that path for ABC’s "Good Morning America" in the 2000s, but morning shows have traditionally paired a man and a woman as host. With an audience dominated by women in an era where news of badly behaving men is frequent, the Guthrie-Kotb pairing may be particularly timely.

"Today" won’t be an all-female zone in its first half, however, with longtime weather forecaster Al Roker and correspondent Carson Daly as regulars. Megyn Kelly hosts the show’s third hour.

"This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made and I am so thrilled," Guthrie said on Tuesday, announcing the appointment on the air.

"I am pinching myself," said a beaming Kotb, sitting beside her. "I think we should send some medics to Alexandria, Virginia, where my mom has likely fainted."

Lauer’s eventual replacement had long been the subject of internal angst but with a sudden decision forced upon the network, Kotb’s performance made it easier. She’s subbed for Lauer since the day he was fired and "Today" has won four straight weeks in the ratings, after having spent much of the past few years in second behind ABC.

"Hoda has seamlessly stepped into the co-anchor role alongside Savannah, and the two have quickly hit the ground running," NBC News Chairman Andy Lack said in a memo to staff on Tuesday. "They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of ’Today’."

Lack said Kotb "has the rare ability to share authentic and heartfelt moments in even the most difficult news circumstances. It’s a tribute to her wide range and her innate curiosity."

India-Pakistan
These three men will continue to fund Lashkar-e-Taiba
[IBTIMES.CO.IN] Pakistain on Monday dealt a decisive blow to Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
boss Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
after it decided to ban the charities that he was receiving. Pakistain further indicated that they would take over the institutions that he runs to bring in the charity.

Saeed used outfits such as Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
and Falah-e-Insaniyat
...the current false nose and mustache of Jamaat ud-Dawa, which was the false nose and mustache of Lashkar e-Taiba...
to receive charity. This money was in turn to nurture cadres of Lashkar-e-Taiba which carried out attacks in India. It had been found that the same funds were used to sponsor the Mumbai 26/11 attack.

While Saeed would rely on funds from Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, there were three key persons who managed the entire show. The three men -- Muhammad Ijaz Safarash, Alexander McLintock and Abdul Aziz Nuristani -- would arrange for the funds and then send it to Saeed's organizations through various channels, the main one being hawala.

The question is will this new action by Pakistain dry up funds for Saeed? Indian officials tracking the Lashkar-e-Taiba say that Saeed has faced such situations in the past. He, however, beat the system by coming up with news organizations. For instance, when the JuD was banned he came up with the FeI. He would do something similar now.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
to ensure that Saeed's funds dry up considerably, the establishment needs to act on the above-mentioned persons. Each of them plays a key role in ensuring that the funds reach Saeed without any problem. Indian officials also point to the fact that the new action by Pakistain may not be linked to its war on terror. It is also a way of ensuring that he does not have funds to fight the elections. Saeed had recently launched the Milli Moslem League and said that he would be fighting the 2018 elections in Pakistain.

Can Pakistain act against these three men?

Muhammad Ijaz Safarash: He is the key player when it comes to bringing in funds for Saeed. Based out of Saudi Arabia, he has been providing financial assistance to the Lashkar-e-Taiba since the past decade. The Indian agencies got wind of him when in 2003, a conversation between him and the commander in chief of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, was intercepted.

Safarash played the lead role in setting up charity boxes in Saudi Arabia. A huge amount of funds would be collected which would later be transferred to Pakistain. Apart from this, he would also tap wealthy businessmen and seek donations. Safarash also ensures that several operatives of the Lashkar-e-Taiba who were on the run got adequate protection in Saudi Arabia.

Alexander McLintock: He is a key player not just for the Lashkar-e-Taiba, but also the al-Qaeda and Taliban
...Arabic for students...
. Today, he is more connected with the Lashkar-e-Taiba and has played the lead in channelising funds for the outfit.

A Scottish by birth, this 52-year-old embraced Islam when he was 20 years old. He decided to support the cause of these terror groups by opening the al-Ramah Welfare Organisation. The primary role of this organization was to raise funds through donations. A Financial Intelligence Unit note mentions that Alexander over the past 15 years has channelised at least 25 million dollars for these terror groups.

Abdul Aziz Nuristani: He is the local point man for Hafiz Saeed. He plays one of the most important roles in the channelising of funds. He is based out of Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
and it is his Jamia Asariya Madrasa which has played the frontal role in collecting funds for the Jamaat-ud-Dawa. This Madrasa ironically falls under the sanctions list, but Pakistain is yet to act against it.

Through this Madrasa, Nuristani gives a legitimate face to the funds that are coming in. Both McLintock and Safarash have often sent money directly to the Madrasa. Apart from this donations are collected in the Gulf in the name of this Madrasa. Prior to be being placed on the sanctions list, a probe by the international agencies showed that the Madrasa had been collecting money under the garb of relief work and routing them into the coffers of the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

SHC CJ orders police protection for Hindu rape victim, her family
[DAWN] The Sindh High Court chief justice directed the police on Monday to provide protection to a rape victim and her family in Kunri, Umerkot district.

Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M. Sheikh had taken a suo motu
...a legal term, from the Latin. Roughly translated it means I saw what you did, you bastard...
notice of the alleged rape of the woman, belonging to the Hindu community, by a man from an influential family last month, and ordered action against the culprit and sought a report from the police.

Umerkot superintendent of police Usman Ijaz Bajwa submitted a report before the SHC on Monday saying that the deputy inspector general of police (Mirpurkhas) had constituted a committee under his supervision. The committee included the sub-divisional police officer of Kunri and the Nabisar SHO to conduct fair and impartial investigations into the incident.

The report said the FIR of the incident was registered at the Nabisar cop shoppe under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the Pakistain Penal Code and the suspect was jugged
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
It further said that the medical examination of the victim, daughter of a farmer, was conducted at the Kunri taluka hospital and samples for a DNA test were also collected. It added that medical reports confirmed that the victim was subjected to a sexual assault and the investigation was under way.

The SP also informed the SHC that a show-cause notice had also been issued to the SHO concerned.

The chief justice directed the Mirpurkhas DIG and the Umerkot SP to provide security to the victim and her family.

Israel arrests ex-Palestinian police officer for incitement
[IsraelTimes] Filmed carrying swastika banner, man in his 60s to be indicted for organizing demonstrations in al-Ayda refugee camp.

Border Police placed in durance vile
You have the right to remain silent...
a former senior officer in the Paleostinian Authority police on suspicion of incitement and organizing protest rallies, police said Tuesday.

The suspect, who was not named by police, allegedly organized a demonstration on Friday in al-Ayda refugee camp, on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Bethlehem, and was seen carrying a banner with a swastika on it.

Israeli security forces were forced to break up the protest and arrested several rock throwers.

The man, in his 60s, served as a senior officer in the PA security forces until a few months ago. He was arrested Sunday at a checkpoint.

He is expected to be indicted Tuesday for incitement and organizing protests.

"This is one of he main instigators who we have been investigating for a number of months," a Border Police officer said.

Separately, in East Jerusalem two teens were arrested on suspicion of attacking two ultra-Orthodox Jews on Saturday.

The two, aged 18 and 19, were arrested and brought for questioning, and are accused of carrying out a racially motivated attack.

They are accused of confronting the two men who were walking early in the morning toward the Silwan pool just outside the Old City. The teens allegedly blocked their path, cursed at them in Arabic and Hebrew and eventually hit them before fleeing. The men did not require medical attention and were able to continue on their way.
Ynet names the miscreant:
Yusef a-Sharqawi, a retired major-general in the Paleostinian Security Forces, will be charged with incitement and orchestrating violent rioting, Ynet has learned, after he organized and participated in a rally while holding a sign bearing a swastika.

A-Sharqawi previously served in the Paleostinian National Security Forces. He was living in Leb prior to the Oslo Accords and then moved the West Bank after the agreements were signed. He was initially recruited into the Paleostinian Security Forces as a junior officer and moved up the ranks. He retired last year.

Uganda enacts law ending presidential age limits
[Al Jazeera] Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni, one of Africa's longest-serving leaders, has signed a bill into law that removes a presidential age limit of 75 from the country's constitution.

The move allows the 73-year-old president to run for a sixth term in 2021.

Don Wanyama, senior presidential spokesperson, told news hounds on Tuesday that Museveni had signed the bill on December 27.

The Ugandan parliament had passed the bill on December 20, with 317 politicians voting in favour and 97 against.

Museveni addressed the bill in his end-of-year address on Sunday, saying he saluted the members of parliament who had supported it.

Afghanistan
Trump is now one of us: Afghan's ex-intelligence chief to Pak
[ANINEWS.IN] Afghanistan's former intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh has said that United States President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
had become one of his countrymen in view of the phrases he used to describe Pakistain in his recent strongly-worded tweet.

"Remember every time we spoke of your deception and support for mass murder of Afghans you would mention one of the above names. It is over now. Trump has had enough of your lies and deceptions and he has openly and rightly acknowledged the truth, the reality and by virtue of being truthful, he has become one of us. He has even borrowed our phrases to describe you," Amrullah Saleh said, in a statement.

"Dear Pak Establishment it gives me such a feeling of achievement to remind you that Trump is not a member of the Northern Alliance, (your fictional structure and imagination) he is not an agent of the NDS, he is not on the payroll of R&AW, he is not from Panjshir valley and has never had any affiliation and connection with late commander Masoud, the iconic national hero of Afghanistan who earned his fame fighting you with meagre resources and bare hands," the statement added.

Five Security Officers Killed In Mandera Shabaab Attack
[RADIOSHABELLE] Five security officers were killed on Tuesday in an attack by suspected al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
holy warriors on the Elwak-Kotulo road in Mandera.

The attackers also burnt a police lorry while several officers were maimed in the evening ambush.

Mandera South deputy county commissioner Daniel Bundotich said three police reservists and two Administration Police officers died in the attack.

"We lost five security officers in the attack while on patrol on Elwak-Kotulo road," he said.

The second contingent of GSU personnel that was responding to the first attack was also ambushed, Mr Bundotich added.

Lorry Burnt
Nation established that the lorry that was burnt was the one the GSU officers were in.

The holy warriors are said to have attacked the first security group of APs, police reservists and regular coppers as they patrolled the notorious Elwak-Kotulo stretch.

"Combined forces were on patrol before being ambushed by suspected al-Shabaab turbans at Dubacity around midday. A team responding to the attack was also attacked and their lorry burnt,’’ said Mr Bundotich. He added that another team was being assembled to respond to the two attacks.

In November, two police vehicles were burnt to ashes in the same area, compelling police to stop escorting buses.

Safer Road
Buses on the Mandera-Nairobi route have since switched to Marsabit-Moyale road, which is considered safer.

According to Mr Bundotich, a gun fight ensued before the suspected turbans retreated.

"We are sure of more casualties on their side, considering the ground evidence," he said

On Sunday, KDF killed five suspected al-Shabaab holy warriors believed to have been involved in an attack on Ijara Police Station in Garissa.

KDF front man David Obonyo said a vehicle that had been taken away by the holy warriors during the attack on the cop shoppe was destroyed after explosives it was carrying went kaboom! during a gun fight that ensued between the soldiers and the murderous Moslems.

(DRC) are calling for sustained pressure on the country's president, after protests demanding Joseph Kabila step down turned deadly this week.

At least seven people were killed across the country on Sunday, after security forces reportedly fired tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition at demonstrators in the capital, Kinshasa, and other cities.

Organised by the Catholic church, the protests called for Kabila to step aside and allow for new elections to be held in the Congo - a demand at the centre of an agreement signed by the president and opposition politicians in 2016.

NYC to install 1,500 barriers to stop ramming attacks
Good.
[IsraelTimes] Hundreds of new protective barriers will be permanently installed in Times Square and other locations around New York in an effort to block vehicles from hitting pedestrians after deadly attacks last year on crowds.

The city is spending $50 million on protective measures including the installation of 1,500 metal barriers, or bollards, in key locations around the city, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday.

In May, a man said by police to be high on drugs drove through crowds for more than three blocks, killing an 18-year-old tourist from Michigan. The vehicle was eventually stopped by one of the squat metal barriers.

Temporary concrete blocks were put up along the Seventh Avenue sidewalk while city officials weighed a long-term solution and considered banning vehicle traffic from the area all together.

Then, on Halloween, an Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
-inspired attacker drove down a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center, authorities said. He killed eight people before he wrecked his rented truck and was shot by police.

Barriers were also placed there to keep cars out of the bike path.

"In 2017, New Yorkers witnessed the horrible capacity of people willing to do us harm, whether it was in our subways, on our bike paths or in Times Square," the Democratic mayor said. "We know we have to do even more to keep people safe and that’s why we conducted a review on how best to secure our streets and public spaces, and we formulated a plan of action."

The rollout will begin in March. Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, the partisans of Honorius went for their knives and the partisans of Stilicho went for the doors...
the temporary blocks already set up will remain in place.

City officials didn’t specify what other locations will be fortified, beyond the bike path and Times Square, but said there would be barriers set up in all five boroughs.

The only barriers that used to be needed were at our borders, ports and around anything being used as jihad HQs. Very sad it has come to this.

#4  Very mixed feelings.

Agreed, Woodrow, but as things are now, such measures are necessary. One of the reasons we elected Donald Trump was so that he could work toward making such measures unnecessary again, given that Mrs. Clinton would have made the situation even more dangerous.
