Fauxahontas Pooh-Poohs Oprah 2020 Bid
At least we were spared the smug, condescending lecture, so there's that...
[RealClearPolitics] On CNN New Day Wednesday morning, possible 2020 Democratic contender Elizabeth Warren was asked about the prospect of Oprah Winfrey running for president.

"Senator Warren, last question. Oprah Winfrey for president, your thoughts?" co-host Alisyn Camerota asked.

"You know, wasn't that a fabulous speech?" Warren said. "And hearing Oprah's voice and her energy and passion and her determination, it's inspiring to all of us, and she shows great leadership. And I am delighted that she's doing it."

"I don't know" if America is ready for another celebrity billionaire president, she said. "Here's what I do know. We are right now in the middle of fights that will determine our future for generations to come."
She's fighting for me, and for you! Group hug, everybody!

Rep. Darrel Issa Calls It Quits
I'm not sure how I feel about this guy; less than enthusiastic is my current take. Yours (Frank G, Abu Uluque) will probably differ!
[ZeroHedge] In an ironic twist, just moments after Trump requested a "tough primary" for California Senator Dianne Feinstein for leaking the Fusion GPS interview transcript, he is losing California Republican Rep, and the richest member of Congress, Darrell Issa, who announced moments ago that he is retiring and won't seek re-election.

Issa, an influential republican in the House, has been in Congress since 2001, and his most high-profile role was as House Oversight Committee chairman during former President Obama’s presidency, a position he used to hold many hearings on what he viewed as govt misdeeds. Issa, considered the richest member of Congress worth up to $768 million, and his wife ran the nation’s largest manufacturer of vehicle anti-theft devices before selling the co. in 2000.

Below is Roll Call's wealth of congress index, putting Issa's wealth in context.

#4  A somewhat more reliable source, although 10 News San Diego is the local ABC/MSM affiliate. He's on the way out, though.

I was disappointed when he voted against the tax bill. He said it would hurt his constituents but those are the very wealthy constituents who could deduct more than $10,000 in state and local taxes so that was certainly not in my best interests. I would have preferred that he talk about why California has such incredibly high income and property taxes.

My lasting impression is that he usually said the right things but never got much done. I hope we can get a real conservative to replace him but, yeah, Pelosi will spend a lot on this district.

More than 100 women signed an open letter Tuesday arguing against the #MeToo movement.

The letter, signed by renowned French actress Catherine Deneuve as well as writers, historians, journalists and entertainers, was published in Le Monde to "we defend freedom to importune, indispensable to sexual freedom."

"Rape is a crime, but trying to seduce someone, even persistently or back-handedly, is not ‐ nor is men being gentlemanly a macho attack," the letter said.

"Men have been punished summarily, forced out of their jobs when all they did was touch someone’s knee or try to steal a kiss."

Europe
Hungary's PM: Migrants Aren't Refugees, but Muslim Invaders
[PJ] In an interview with German newspaper Bild, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that the "the migrant crisis" is, in effect, "an invasion."

When asked by Bild why Hungary hasn't deemed itself able to welcome two thousand refugees while Germany has let in two million of them, Orban answered: "[T]he difference is: you want those migrants. We do not. We do our job by closing the Schengen-border with Serbia. Doing so has cost us one billion euros since 2015 and Brussels pays us nothing for it."

"The solution to this problem isn't to divide people who are illegally in the EU among EU member states. We believe that we have to solve the root of the problem instead of bringing these immigrants here [Europe]," the prime minister continued.

"We do not consider these people as Muslim refugees. We consider them as Muslim invaders. To travel to Hungary from Syria they have to cross through four other countries that are, although not as rich as Germany, certainly stable. They don't flee for their lives. This proves that they are economic migrants seeking a better life," Orban concluded.

Bild then asked Orban whether this makes those migrants inferior in some way. "If someone wants to come to your home," the PM answered, "then he knocks on the door and asks: 'Can we come in, can we stay?' They did not do that. Instead, they broke through the border illegally. That was not a wave of refugees, that was an invasion."

Salahuddin-Diyala Border Clearances: new big turban, 2 turbans permanently unravelled

IS inaugurates Kurdish leader as emir on Salahuddin-Diyala borders

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State has inaugurated a Kurdish emir for the first time at the region between Diyala and Salahuddin provinces, a senior security source said on Tuesday.

Speaking to AlSumaria News, on condition of anonymity, the source said, “IS inaugurated for the first time one ots Kurdish leaders as an emir at Mutaibija region, on the borders between Diyala and Salahuddin.”

The Kurdish leader, according to the source, “was working at the so-called Kirkuk State.”

On Monday, Jabbar al-Maamouri, senior leader with al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said in remarks that the militant group executed some of its members in Salahuddin province for refusing to carry out suicide attacks.

Mutaibija has complicated terrain, with numerous hills that serve as a good hideout for militants. Occasional attacks have been witnessed there by Islamic State against government and paramilitary troops deployments since Iraqi forces, backed by a U.S.-led coalition and PMUs, launched a major offensive to retake areas occupied by IS since 2014.

Two Islamic State militants killed in Diyala security operation

Diyala (Iraqinews.com) – Two Islamic State militants were killed during a security operation in a border area between Diyala and Salahuddin provinces, a police command was quoted as saying Tuesday.

More Mosul Moslem Mayhem: another mass grave found

Relics of 20 tortured women, executed by IS, found in mass grave in Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) A mass grave with relics of tortured women was found in west of Mosul city, Nineveh, a police source was quoted saying on Monday.

“Relics of 20 women were found inside a mass grave while removing debris in western Mosul,” Col. Omar al-Hajjar told DPA.

The victims, according to Hajjar, “were executed by Islamic State as they were trying to escape toward the eastern side of the city during the liberation offensives last year.”

“Security troops recovered all the bodies along with their identity cards. They were transferred to forensic medicine department in Mosul to extradite them to their relatives,” he added.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria.

Last week, MP Farah al-Siraj said 4,000 bodies are still under the debris in the Old City of Mosul.

Nineveh province denies concluding 50 percent of reconstruction in western Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Nineveh provincial council has denied finishing 50 percent of the rehabilitation works in the western side of Mosul, saying that reconstruction had not started yet, but just removal of the rubble.

In remarks on Tuesday, Mohamed Ibrahim, member of the council, said, “talks about reconstructing 50 percent the western flank of the city are totally untrue.”

“Only 40 percent of electricity distribution and water networks are rehabilitated in western Mosul, in addition to opening of some schools,” he added. “The reconstruction works have not started yet, but only removal of debris.”

Ibrahim noted that “the reconstruction of Mosul requires a lot of money as well as long time.”

On Monday, Federal Police Chief Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat said police forces finished 50 percent of their works to rehabilitate war-scarred areas of western Mosul. Refugees have been repatriated from camps to their living areas in addition to reopening of schools and bridges.

Iraqi forces arrest more IS members, make ground gains in Kirkuk purge

Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi forces on Tuesday advanced further and made more arrests as a recent operation continues to clear areas in Kirkuk province from remnant Islamic State militants.

The Popular Mobilization Forces said through their media that troops, backed by Iraqi army divisions completed the clearing of five villages northeast of the town of Hawija, Islamic State’s former stronghold in Kirkuk.

It said it seized munitions belonging to the group, and continue to chase fleeing militants at areas surrounding Hawija.

Hussein Ali Najm, commander of the PMF’s 56th birgade, said in a statement that troops had managed to arrest a large number of IS members at the eastern Hawija regions.

Europe
Switzerland Rejects Citizenship Bids of Residents Who Have Been on Welfare
[Breitbart] A new civil rights act has come into force in Switzerland that prevents residents who have been on welfare in the past three years from becoming citizens unless they pay back the money they received to the state.

The new regulations will make it impossible for asylum seekers and migrants who have lived off state handouts in the last three years to become citizens even if they have lived in Switzerland as permanent residents for the required time to make a citizenship application, Kronen Zeitung reports.

The previous law allowed migrants to apply for citizenship as long as they were not on state benefits at the time of their application.

Along with the welfare stipulation, the new act requires migrants to demonstrate a greater level of integration than before including making them prove they have a certain number of Swiss friends and acquaintances.

Language requirements vary by canton with most expecting an intermediate level of language proficiency judged on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at the B1 or B2 level.

While Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, asylum seekers have attempted to flood into the country through the southern Italian border. While many have used Switzerland as a transit country to reach Germany, others have remained in the Alpine state.

Various cantons and cities in Switzerland have attempted to push back against the tide of migrants by making it less appealing for them to come to the country. Late last year, the city of Zurich voted to dramatically cut benefits to failed asylum seekers who were in so-called "F-status" in which they cannot be deported.

Former Idaho Rep. Brandon Hixon dies by suicide
[Spokesman Review] BOISE, Idaho ‐ An Idaho Republican state lawmaker who was under investigation for possible sexual abuse, died in an apparent suicide, according to authorities on Tuesday.

Canyon County Coroner Vicki DeGeus-Morris said Brandon Hixon was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in his Caldwell home early Tuesday morning. A family member discovered his remains.

Hixon, 36, was elected to the Idaho Legislature in 2012. At the time, Hixon was one of the youngest lawmakers elected to the Idaho House of Representatives.

He flew relatively under the radar during his time in the Statehouse until October, when he abruptly resigned from office after reports broke he was the subject of a criminal investigation for possible sexual abuse.

The Attorney General’s office was overseeing the investigation, but declined to comment Tuesday when contacted by The Associated Press.

"I hope that my efforts have helped improve the lives of my constituents in District 10, as well as all Idahoans," Hixon wrote in his resignation letter. "I will never forget all of my colleagues that I very much enjoyed working side by side with to make Idaho a better place for all."

US oil output to hit record over 11M bpd by end of 2019, EIA
h/t Instapundit
U.S. crude oil production is expected to climb to more than 10 million barrels per day (bpd) early in 2018, reaching that milestone for the first time since 1970, and to continue to surge into 2019 to a record high, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said Tuesday.

Production was expected to hit 10.04 million bpd during the first quarter of this year, the agency said in a monthly report. The 10 million-bpd milestone previously had not been expected to be reached until the fourth quarter.

The EIA revised its production growth forecast for 2018 sharply higher to 970,000 bpd from 780,000 bpd in its previous outlook.

U.S. output will be at an all-time high in 2019, surpassing 11 million bpd by the end of that year, a new high for national output, the EIA said in the report. The average production in 2019 will rise 580,000 bpd to 10.85 million bpd, the agency said in its first outlook for next year.

The firms revealed last year that they planned a US joint venture, with production scheduled to begin in 2021. At the time, President Donald Trump said the decision was "a great investment" in US manufacturing.

The choice for the factory location had reportedly been narrowed down to either Alabama or North Carolina. One US media outlet reported that North Carolina missed out because it did not offer the supply-chain logistics the two firms required.

The factory is expected to eventually produce 300,000 vehicles a year and employ about 4,000 people.

When contacted by the BBC, Toyota refused to confirm that Alabama had been selected, saying an announcement would be made "in early 2018". However US media was widely reporting a formal announcement would be made on Wednesday.

The auto industry is one area where President Trump has been pressuring overseas companies to do even more manufacturing in the US.

Ford never owned more than 33.4% of Mazda (in the 1990s) and now has no interest in Mazda today since September 30, 2015, when Ford's shares had sunk to a little over 2% due to stock dilution, Ford sold its remaining shares in Mazda.

China-Japan-Koreas
Another 'Oops' from the Intelligence Community
[PJ] The Achilles' heel of the American government is the intelligence community, known as the IC to its intimates. Not that it doesn't have first-rate people, many of whom have worked in its nooks and crannies around the world for decades. Our information-gathering capability remains first rate, our field agents largely superb in their savvy and bravery. The problem, however, comes when that information gets transmitted back to the home offices in and around Washington, D.C. And there, depending in part on who's in power at the time, lies the rub.

The intelligence business has two sides: raw information, and analysis. One hundred percent accuracy in the first is one hundred percent useless should the latter be deficient. As it happens, the primus inter pares of the IC, the Central Intelligence Agency, is expressly designed to do both. As events from the fall of the Shah, the Iranian hostage crisis, the fall of the Soviet Union, and the events of 9/11 have shown, its track record is very spotty, and its failures attributable to analysis, not information. Seeing only what you want to see in information gathered by your colleagues, and then tailoring it for superiors who make political calculations first and informed judgments only second, is a recipe for disaster.

Comes now the news that -- surprise! -- the U.S. seriously underestimated the speed at which the rogue Communist state of North Korea has ramped up its nuclear program; a nuclear program that, let us not forget, was made possible by the Clinton administration:

Tsunami warnings issued for the Caribbean!
[DailyMail] Massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake strikes in the Caribbean: Tsunami warnings issued for Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands and more

  • The 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred on Tuesday night at about 9.51pm

  • It struck in the Caribbean Sea just over 25 miles from the coast of Great Swan Island belonging to Honduras

  • The earthquake had a depth of 6.2 miles

  • A tsunami advisory was in effect for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands

  • The wave could also potentially impact the coasts of Central American nations, including Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami advisory was in effect for hurricane-hit Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands after the earthquake and warned of possible waves up to 3 feet above tide level.

The wave could also potentially impact the coasts of Central American nations, including Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands.

Meanwhile the US National Weather Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned 'hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 1,000 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter'. It later said this threat had passed.

The quake rattled windows in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, which is roughly 323 miles to the east, but no damage was immediately reported.

It was also lightly felt in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, north of Honduras, according to Mexico's civil protection director.

Judge rules against Trump administration on rescinding DACA
[FoxNews] A federal judge in San Francisco on Tuesday barred the Trump administration from turning back the Obama-era DACA program, which shielded more than 700,000 people from deportation, Reuters reported, citing the judge's ruling.

Trump last year ended the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. He gave Congress until March to find a fix.

Starting in March, young people protected under DACA were to lose their protections under the program.

As I made very clear today, our country needs the security of the Wall on the Southern Border, which must be part of any DACA approval.
‐ Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 10, 2018

Trump said he was willing to be flexible in finding an agreement as Democrats warned that the lives of hundreds of thousands of immigrants hung in the balance.

"I think my positions are going to be what the people in this room come up with," Trump said during a Cabinet Room meeting with a bipartisan group of nearly two dozen lawmakers.

The Reuters report said U.S. District Judge William Alsup ruled that the program must stay intact during litigation.

The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Trump appeared optimistic that Congress could reach a decision on the program.

Trump ended DACA in September. Immigration advocates estimate that more than 100 people a day lose the protected status because they did not renew their permits before the deadline, The Journal reported.

Trump is using border security‐including a border wall-- as a bargaining chip and Democrats want to use their sway on the spending bill to protect immigrants under DACA.

The plaintiffs in the suit included, among others, attorneys general from California, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and the University of California

Xavier Becerra, California's attorney general, filed a motion seeking the preliminary injunction in November, saying that the move is in violation of the U.S. Constitution and causes "irreparable" harm to DACA recipients.

Becerra said in a statement late Tuesday that the ruling is a "huge step in the right direction."

"America is and has been home to Dreamers who courageously came forward, applied for DACA and did everything the federal government asked of them," he said. "They followed DACA's rules, they succeeded in school, at work and in business, and they have contributed in building a better America."

#13  This asshole, Alsup, has been slapped down before:

Five lawsuits were filed in U.S. District Court for Northern California to reinstate DACA, with the lead case brought ironically by none other than Napolitano, who is now the president of the University of California. The cases were assigned to Judge William Alsup, a liberal Clinton-appointed judge who formerly clerked for the Supreme Court and served in the Clinton-era DOJ.

Alsup originally issued extraordinarily broad and invasive discovery orders to force the federal government—even the White House—to disclose a broad range of sensitive documents on DACA discussions, possibly including communications with President Trump that would be protected by executive privilege.

When the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco did not rein in Alsup, Sessions’ top Supreme Court lawyer, Solicitor General Noel Francisco, went straight to the Supreme Court, which rejected Alsup’s order in a unanimous opinion.

Back in the federal trial court, Alsup’s latest decision rejected DOJ’s motion to dismiss the five lawsuits. Instead, he issued a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration, ordering the Trump administration, “pending final judgment herein or other order, to maintain the DACA program on a nationwide basis on the same terms and conditions that were in effect before the rescission on September 5, 2017.” The San Francisco-based district court further ordered the federal government to begin renewing work permits for DACA recipients.

DOJ can now take these cases back to the Ninth Circuit on an expedited basis, and request a stay of the district court’s reinstatement order while the appeal is ongoing. If the Ninth Circuit declines again to do so, then DOJ can immediately return to the Supreme Court and ask Justice Anthony Kennedy—who has jurisdiction over the Ninth Circuit—to issue a stay that will last until a final decision is rendered in the appeal.

State Dept Waited a Year to Set Up Panel Into Unexplained Attacks on U.S. Diplomats in Cuba
[Free Beacon] The State Department waited nearly one year before standing up an independent investigative panel, known as an Accountability Review Board, to probe the unexplained attacks on U.S. personnel working in Cuba and their family members.

U.S. law requires the secretary of state to convene an ARB within 60 days after an incident of "serious injury" occurs to U.S. personnel serving abroad, which can be extended to 120 days if the secretary of state deems more time is needed.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson convened the board Dec. 11 and will formally notify Congress about its creation soon, Francisco Palmieri, the acting assistant secretary of state for western hemisphere affairs, told senators Tuesday during a Foreign Relations Committee oversight hearing on the attacks that on diplomats and other U.S. personnel in Cuba.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R., Fla.), who led the hearing, repeatedly criticized the State Department for failing to form the ARB until December when the first symptoms that diplomats had been harmed in Cuba occurred in late 2016.

President Trump's TV-Show Exposes Dem Weakness, GOP Unity, in Amnesty Fight
[Breitbart] President Donald Trump’s riveting spectacle of televised bipartisanship exposed the Democrats’ political weakness in the amnesty debate ‐ and also revealed remarkable GOP unity on the goal of ending the nation’s chain-migration system.

Time after time, Democrats pleaded for a quick passage of unpopular ’dreamer’ amnesty while also promising a later-meaning-never debate over popular immigration reforms, such as the elimination of the visa-lottery and the chain-migration system, which doubles the annual inflow of legal immigrants.

Time after time, in contrast, GOP leaders wrapped themselves in sympathy for the 670,000 DACA illegals while insisting that Congress must implement Trump’s popular policies by ending the huge visa-lottery and chain-migration programs which are slowly but steadily freezing Americans’ wages while turning Republican states blue.

A key moment came when Trump invited GOP Majority leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy to shut down the Democrats’ demand for a quick amnesty by touting the president’s immigration priorities as a must-do item:

DHS OIG Finds ICE's Screening Protocol of Aliens Who May Be Known or Suspected Terrorists is Limited and Risks National Security
[Office of the Inspector General - Homeland Security] A new report by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) finds that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to face significant challenges with its screening of aliens who may have ties to terrorism. Auditors warn ICE may have missed opportunities to identify, apprehend, and adjudicate the status of aliens posing the highest risk to public safety and national security.

The report, "ICE Faces Challenges to Screen Aliens Who May Be Known or Suspected Terrorists (REDACTED)," concluded that ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) faces significant limitations in implementing its Known or Suspected Terrorist Encounter Protocol (KSTEP). ICE established KSTEP to streamline the screening protocol of all aliens and to coordinate and exchange information with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Despite its implementation, the agency’s KSTEP policy fails to require continued screening of the majority of nearly 2.4 million aliens no longer in ICE custody but under ICE supervision.
Continues.

Some 3,700 Iranians arrested during protests, unrest, lawmaker says
[IsraelTimes] An Iranian reformist politician says some 3,700 people were incarcerated
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
in the days of protests and unrest that roiled Iran over the past two weeks, offering a far higher number than authorities previously released.

The protests, which vented anger at high unemployment and official corruption, were the largest seen in Iran since the disputed 2009 presidential election, and some demonstrators called for the overthrow of the government. At least 21 people have been killed in the unrest surrounding the protests.

The official news website of the Iranian parliament, icana.ir, quotes Mahmoud Sadeghi of Tehran as saying that different security and intelligence forces detained the protesters, making it difficult to know the exact number of detainees. He did not elaborate, nor did he say where he got the figure.

Previously, authorities have said "hundreds" were arrested in Tehran alone, not offering a total figure for arrests as the demonstrations spread into the Iranian countryside, including small towns.

Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli has said about 42,000 people at most took part in the anti-government protests. Sadeghi’s figure of arrested offered Tuesday would mean nearly nine percent of those who demonstrated were arrested.

Bus-torching rebels confess in southern Thailand
[Bangkok Post] Three people detained in connection with the arson attack on a passenger bus in Yala province on December 17 have confessed to carrying out the strike on the orders of two insurgents leading a group in Yala, a security source said Monday. The two insurgents are Abdulloh Tapohto and Ahama Luebaesa, both of whom remain at large in the area, the source added.

Four suspects were initially detained a few days after the attack, which resulted in no casualties or major injuries as the passengers were ordered off the bus before it was set on fire. When the bus stopped, 10-15 armed men dressed like soldiers emerged from roadside bushes and ordered everybody off the vehicle. They then doused the vehicle with gasoline and set it alight before leaving the scene.

Another 20 suspects were apprehended in a series of raids carried out late last week, the source said. The raids were carried out by police, military rangers and local administrative officials in Bannang Sata district. The raids and subsequent detentions were kept secret.

Several suspects told investigators the attack was meant to undermine public confidence in the government's economic zone which is being implemented in the southern border provinces.

The event was slated to take place Tuesday, but officers arrive at the scene and prevent it from taking place, according to Hebrew media reports.

NY Assemblywoman Stole Sandy Money from FEMA, Tried to Cover it Up: Prosecutors
[NBCNewYork] A New York state assemblywoman from Brooklyn who claims to be an advocate for Sandy victims has been accused of bilking FEMA and New York City's's Build it Back fund out of thousands of dollars following the monster 2012 storm.

Rep. Pamela Harris was named in an 11-count indictment charging her with cheating the two storm relief agencies out of thousands of dollars before and after she was elected to the State Assembly in 2017. The indictment also accuses the Coney Island
Sorry, you have to hit the link to figure out her party affiliation. Or maybe not.
of stealing from New York City Council coffers while running a nonprofit and lying about her schemes during bankruptcy proceedings in 2013.

As part of the scheme, prosecutors and FBI agents said she claimed the storm forced her out of her home by Sandy and into a rental on Staten Island, only to pocket $24,800 in housing payments from FEMA while living in her Brooklyn home, from 2012 to 2014. She also lied on a NYC Build it Back assistance application about living at the first-floor Staten Island apartment and submitted a forged lease and rental receipts, according to the indictment.

"Both before and during her tenure as a public servant, as alleged, Assemblywoman Pamela Harris went to great lengths to defraud local and federal agencies out of thousands of dollars," said William Sweeney, the FBI's assistant director-in-charge.

He added, "In fact, at a time when many residents in her district were dealing with the horrific aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Harris was busy brewing a storm of her own, one that resulted in her receiving significant payouts by the very federal agency charged with helping those truly in need."

The indictment states that she also lied about the payments and claimed the landlord at the Staten Island apartment was giving her $1,200 in monthly rental assistance while under oath during a bankruptcy hearing in 2013.

The 57-year-old is also accused of stealing more than $30,000 from New York City council between 2013 and 2015 while serving as the executive director of Coney Island Generation Gap, a nonprofit also known as CIGG that aimed at mentoring low- and moderate-income children interested in media arts.

According to the indictment, Harris funneled money given to the nonprofit meant to rent a studio space to her own personal bank accounts. And in 2015, she withdrew $22,800 directly from CIGG's bank account and deposited into her personal checking account. Then, authorities said, she used the money to buy plane and cruise tickets for her and her spouse, pay her mortgage and make online purchases at Kohl's and Victoria's Secret.

According to the indictment, when Harris found out she was being investigated, she asked witnesses in the alleged schemes to lie for her.

"When she learned that law enforcement was investigating her various fraud schemes, she pressured witnesses to lie to the FBI and cover them up," said Richard Donoghue, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, which is investigating the case. "This Office and our law enforcement partners are committed to ensuring that those who serve the public are held accountable under the law to the same extent as the people they are privileged to serve."

Harris -- who represents Bay Ridge, Coney Island, Dyker Heights and parts of other nearby neighborhoods -- faces up to 30 years behind bars if convicted of the top charge, related to making false statements to FEMA.

A representative for the state representative wasn't immediately available for comment on Tuesday.

According to her biography on the Assembly's website, Harris is described as a "vocal advocate for (Sandy) relief efforts and previously helped by personally delivering food, clothes and blankets for her displaced neighbors." She's also spoken about the storm and rebuilding efforts in open and recorded State Assembly hearings.

IDF troops search for rabbi’s killers, set up roadblocks outside Nablus
[IsraelTimes] Victim of deadly drive-by shooting attack named as Rabbi Raziel Shevach, a father of six who lived in a nearby settlement.

Israeli troops launched a manhunt in the northern West Bank on Tuesday night, after a fatal terror attack in which an Israeli rabbi was rubbed out while driving down a highway outside Nablus, the army said.

Paleostinian media reported that Israeli troops had closed down roads in the area and had begun entering nearby Paleostinian villages in a search for the Death Eaters behind the shooting.

The military confirmed that it had set up road closures around the Nablus area, following a "situational assessment" by the head of the army’s Central Command, Maj. Gen. Roni Numa, the head of the Judea and Samaria Division, Brig. Gen. Eran Niv, and the head of the Samaria Brigade, Col. Gilad Amit.

"A number of actions were decided upon in order to locate the Death Eaters who committed the shooting attack, including security checks upon entrances and exits to and from the city of Nablus and placing forces and security crossings across the city," the army said.

"Additional forces were called to the scene in order to complete missions in the area," the military said in a statement.

Following the shooting attack outside the Havat Gilad outpost, settlers from the nearby Yitzhar community entered the adjacent Paleostinian village of Burin and began throwing rocks at Paleostinian residents, the Israel Defense Forces said. IDF soldiers who arrived at the scene dispersed the rock-throwing settlers, an army spokesperson said. There were no reports of serious injuries.

In a rare move, the Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terrorist group’s military wing released a statement praising the attack, calling it "heroic" and a sign of future attacks to come, though the organization did not take responsibility for the shooting.

"The attack outside Nablus is the first real response to show the leaders of the enemies and those that are behind them (the United States), that things that you fear ‐ are coming," Hamas said in a statement, according to the Ynet news site.

Israeli defense officials have repeatedly warned that Hamas is looking to carry out terror attacks in the West Bank.

Shortly before 8:00 p.m., 35-year-old father of six Rabbi Raziel Shevach was driving in his car on the highway near his home in the Havat Gilad outpost when shots were fired at him from a passing car. Shevach was shot in the neck, but managed to call his wife and tell her to call an ambulance.

Civilian and military medics rushed to the scene and tried to stop the bleeding as they took him to Kfar Saba’s Meir Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
He's dead, Jim!
Soldiers immediately began searching the area for the shooters.

Shevach’s funeral will be held at the Havat Gilad outpost at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The head of the local settler council, Yossi Dagan, harshly criticized the government for failing to install security cameras in the area.

"If they had been (installed), these vile murderers would have been caught. Raziel was killed near the community of Gilad Farms, where there are no security apparatuses, despite repeated requests from my regional council," Dagan said in a statement.

"This terrible attack should be a tremendous warning sign," he added.

In November, Dagan launched a hunger strike along with representatives of bereaved families calling on the government to immediately transfer funds to improve West Bank’s security infrastructure. The campaign ended with an agreement signed by Netanyahu which puts in writing a pledge to include NIS 800 million ($228 million) in the 2018 budget to be used for West Bank roads and infrastructure development.

In December, the government approved an additional NIS 40 million ($11.5 million) grant for Israeli local and regional councils in the West Bank. Yesha settlement umbrella council front man Yigal Dilmoni told The Times of Israel then that the allocation is merely an allocation that the settlements receive annually.
Update from The Times of Israel at 11:40a.m. ET:
Clashes reportedly broke out between Paleostinians and Israeli settlers in the West Bank following the funeral of Rabbi Raziel Shevach who was murdered in a terror attack last night.

Reports in Hebrew-language media say no one was injured in the incident near the Paleostinian village of Farata, close to where the funeral for the Israeli victim was held.

Rabbis for Human Rights, an Israeli NGO, says the scuffles broke out when a group of 20 settlers returning home from the funeral broke windows at the houses of several Paleostinian residents.

Canada: Trudeau's Support for Islamists a Warning to America

Canada will not be able to plead ignorance or inability while facing accusations of complicity from any future American terrorist victims.

8 terrorists killed in police raid on North Sinai training camp: Egypt's interior ministry
[AlAhram] Egyptian police potted eight gunnies on Tuesday after a shootout broke out while security forces conducted a raid on a terrorist training camp in North Sinai’s El-Arish, the interior ministry said in a statement.

The raid was carried out based on intelligence obtained by the National Security agency, which indicated that the suspects were involved in several terrorist attacks in the governorate.

A number of weapons as well as improvised bombs (IEDs) were found at the site.

The suspects’ identities or affiliations have not yet been determined.

Most of the terrorist attacks that have taken place in North Sinai in recent years, which have mostly targeted security forces, have been claimed by the ISIS-affiliated North Sinai-based group Ansar Beit al-Maqdis.

Germany protests to Iran for spying on targets with ties to Israel
[IsraelTimes] Iranian ambassador reprimanded after Revolutionary Guard agent convicted and sentenced for targeting pro-Israel official

The German government has protested to the Iranian ambassador in the country following the conviction of an Iranian agent for spying on targets including a former German politician who headed a German-Israeli friendship group.

The Pak man was convicted in Berlin last year of espionage and sentenced to more than four years in prison. His targets included Reinhold Robbe, who headed the German-Israeli Association, and a French-Israeli economics professor.

Iranian Ambassador Ali Majedi was summoned to the Foreign Ministry just before Christmas. After German media reported on the meeting, the ministry said Tuesday he was told that "spying on people and institutions with a particular relationship to the State of Israel on German soil is a blatant violation of German law."

The ambassador was told that such activities would not be tolerated.

In March 2017, 31-year-old Mustufa Haidar Syed-Naqfi was sentenced to four years and three months in prison "for working for a foreign intelligence service."

German media reported during the trial that local security agencies believe Robbe was being eyed by Tehran as a possible liquidation target in retaliation for an Israeli operation against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The court found he spied "against Germany and another NATO

member," La Belle France, for the al-Quds Force, the foreign operations wing of the elite Revolutionary Guards.

Syed-Naqfi compiled dossiers on possible attack targets with ties to Israel. Investigators found detailed files on the men and their daily routines, with hundreds of photos and video clips.

The court heard they detailed the targets’ homes and work places, various access routes to them, as well as information on security guards, surveillance cameras and nearby cop shoppes.

The service suspected the al-Quds Force was preparing for a possible future conflict with the United States and Israel, when it would hit targets in Europe

[AlAhram] A Cairo criminal court issued a preliminary death sentence on Tuesday against four people convicted of forming a terrorist cell in Giza in a 2014 case.

The court, which has set a 19 February session to issue its final verdict, has referred the sentence to the Grand Mufti, the country’s top religious authority, whose opinion is legally required in death penalty
cases but is not binding.

The defendants were charged with forming a cell that aimed to carry out attacks on members of the judiciary, attacks on public and private property, and protesting without consent.

The February court session will include verdicts for all 30 defendants in the case, which will be subject to be appeal.

Germany indicts Syrian on charges of promoting Islamic State

group, obtaining bomb-making instructions and other crimes, prosecutors said Tuesday.

The man, who wasn't identified, is alleged to have posted videos on social media between July and December 2016 in which he urged support for IS and attempted to solicit new recruits for the group.

German prosecutors said they considered another post, in which the suspect praised the killing of Jordanian author Nahed Hattar , a prominent critic of IS, to constitute incitement.

Pakistan has suspended military and intelligence cooperation with US: defence minister
[DAWN] Pakistain has suspended military and intelligence cooperation with the United States in the wake of US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's allegation that Pakistain has given the US "nothing but lies and deceit" and suspension of security aid for Pakistain, Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said while addressing a gathering at Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Speaking during a seminar titled 'Contours of Security Environment of Pakistain', Khan said the US is facing defeat in Afghanistan despite spending billions of dollars. He alleged that the US is using Pakistain as a 'scapegoat' for its failures in Afghanistan.

"Pakistain does not want to put a price on its sacrifices but wants them to be recognised," the defence minister said, adding that Pakistain will not allow Afghanistan's war to be fought on Pak territory.

Khan also said that the US is busy in a blame game against Pakistain rather than providing it with assistance to secure the Pak-Afghan border.

The US Embassy in Islamabad said it had not been informed about the suspension of military cooperation by Pakistain.

"We have not received any formal communication regarding a suspension," Embassy front man Richard Snelsire said, according to VOA news.

Answering a question during the seminar, the defence minister said that Pakistain took the right steps by blocking NATO

North Korea to attend Olympics in rival South
[DAWN] North Korea will send its athletes to the Winter Olympics in the South, the rivals said on Tuesday after their first formal talks in more than two years following high tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons programme.

The two sides also decided to hold military talks and to restore a military hotline closed since February, 2016.

Seoul and Olympic organisers have been keen for Pyongyang ‐ which boycotted the 1988 Summer Games in the South Korean capital ‐ to take part in what they repeatedly proclaimed a "peace Olympics" in Pyeongchang next month. But the North had given no indication it would do so until leader Kim Jong-Un's New Year address last week, instead pursuing its banned weapons programmes in defiance of United Nations

#1  The stage is being set for South Korea to send danegeld aid to North Korea once again, thus rendering obsolete the nominally tightened sanctions.

The new US administration declared an end to strategic patience.

Kim Jong Un made the strategic decision to ignore the Trump administration's rhetoric and respond with provocative missile tests and a hydrogen bomb detonation.

Now it looks like KJU made the right decision and will we rewarded generously. This will have global consequences, all of them bad for the West.

Maybe the election of Trump was nothing more than Western civilization's final dead cat bounce.

Israeli air strikes, rockets hit Syria: Syrian army
More on this story from yesterday.
[DAWN] The Israeli army carried out air strikes and fired rockets at targets in Syria overnight, causing damage near a military position, the Syrian army said on Tuesday.

Israel's military has carried out several attacks on the Syrian army and its ally Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah since the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011.

The Israeli air force conducted strikes on the Qutayfeh area northeast of Damascus, causing the Syrian army to retaliate and "hit one of its planes", the Syrian army said in a statement.

Syrian air defences intercepted one rocket, but several more hit "near a military position, causing material damage," it added.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based war monitor, said the air strikes targeted Syrian army and Hezbollah weapon depots. The strikes sparked "successive kabooms and fires, causing material damage" in the depots, where land-to-land missiles have been stored among other weapons, the Observatory said.

Russian ministry of defense to change over to Linux
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Ministry of Defense has decided to transfer all office computers to the operating system Linux-based Astra Linux of the Moscow-based company RusBITEkh, the Izvestia newspaper reported, citing sources in the ministry.

The expanded version, Astra Linux Special Edition, with a built-in office suite will be used on the ministry's working computers, and on the next stage it will be used on smartphones and tablets, the newspaper said. If the new operating system meets military requirements, it will be installed on all computers in the ministry and will be the main one for automated control systems and workplaces, servers and on-board military equipment.

Dmitry Donskoy, Deputy CEO of RusBITEkh, confirmed the information to the newspaper. "A key feature of Astra Linux Special Edition is the unique system of information protection. The operation system is fully compatible with modern Russian-made computers. It works with high-tech domestic processors Elbrus, Baikal-T1 and Komdiv. They are the 'heart' of the last-generation supercomputers," he said.

As the publication notes, the Astra Linux system has been used by the Russian Armed Forces for several years, in particular, the information system of the Russian National Defense Control Center (NDCC). In addition, it is already used today in existing models of weapons and military equipment and in a number of promising projects.

The 28-year-old tells German media his SUV came under fire from a black van on the A4 motorway near the western town of Dueren, leaving two bullets lodged in his car.

"I was afraid for my life," says German-born Naki, who plays for the third-tier club Amedspor in the majority-Kurdish city of Diyarbakir. "I am a walking target in Turkey because of my pro-Kurdish stance," he is quoted as saying.

German prosecutors have opened an investigation into attempted murder, and coppers have since taken Naki to "a hidden location" as a precaution, his lawyer Soran Haldi Mizrak tells the DPA news agency.

'Somebody's already been killed' because of Trump dossier, Fusion GPS rep revealed
[FOX] An attorney for the co-founder of opposition research firm Fusion GPS revealed during a closed-door interview this summer with congressional investigators that "somebody's already been killed" as a result of the publication of the anti-Trump dossier.

The statement was contained in a 312-page transcript of Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson's August interview with committee investigators, released unilaterally Tuesday by Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

The release itself provoked controversy, with an aide to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, calling it "confounding" for Feinstein to drop the transcript in the "middle of an ongoing investigation."

Among the many revelations in the document, though, is the claim from Simpson's attorney that someone died because the dossier -- which was commissioned by Fusion GPS -- was publicly released.

"He wants to be very careful to protect his sources," attorney Josh Levy said during the Aug. 22 Senate Judiciary Committee interview of his client. "Somebody's already been killed as a result of the publication of this dossier and no harm should come to anybody related to this honest work."

Related? Oleg Erovinkin, a former general in the KGB and its successor the FSB, was found dead in the back of his car in Moscow on Boxing Day in mysterious circumstances. A few others have passed on as well.

7 killed as suicide bomber targets police truck in Quetta
[DAWN] At least seven people were killed on Quetta's Zarghoon Road when a jacket wallah rammed into a parked police truck on Tuesday, injuring 16 people, police said.

Five coppers and two passers-by were among those killed, Inspector General of Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
Police Moazzam Jah Ansari told news hounds. He said eight coppers were maimed in the attack.

According to News Agency that Dare Not be Named, the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain (TTP) grabbed credit for the attack, saying a suicide bomber targeted a police contingent returning from duty at the provincial assembly building.

IG Ansari said the suicide bomber had walked up to the scene and went kaboom! near the back of the police truck. He said the earlier impression that the attacker could have travelled to the truck on a cycle of violence was not correct.

Bomb Disposal Squad officials said 10 kilograms of explosives had been used in the attack. Most deaths occurred due to the impact from ball bearings and pellets stored in the bomber's suicide jacket, said the IG.

IG Ansari while talking to news hounds said he could "tell in advance" that the suicide bomber must have come from across the Afghan border, as DNA tests showed suicide bombers involved in previous attacks in Quetta were foreign nationals too.

He said the Lions of Islam had targeted police in the attack and not the Balochistan Assembly, which is in the same area, as the blast occurred an hour after the assembly session had ended.

The injured, which include security personnel and civilians, were shifted to Quetta Civil Hospital's trauma centre after being administered first aid, the hospital's front man told DawnNews.

Feds: Indicted Baltimore state senator confessed to taking cash payments
[BaltimoreSun] Federal prosecutors revealed in new court documents that indicted state Sen. Nathaniel T. Oaks confessed to taking cash payments in exchange for official business before becoming an FBI cooperator and upending another bribery investigation.

The allegations come as Oaks prepares to begin his 30th legislative session in the General Assembly, which begins Wednesday. While the U.S. attorney’s office says Oaks confessed both to taking cash payments and to interfering with an investigation, he has pleaded not guilty and has a trial scheduled for mid-April, right after the legislative session concludes.

Neither Oaks nor his defense attorney could be reached for comment Friday evening.

Oaks, a Baltimore Democrat, is accused of taking $15,300 in cash from someone he thought was a “wealthy Texas businessman” but who was working for the FBI, prosecutors said in the new filing. After agreeing to cooperate with investigators, Oaks recorded himself accepting a $2,600 cash payment from an FBI target under a table at an Annapolis restaurant in March 2017 and told the target he would talk to legislators about a bill favorable to the bail-bond industry, federal prosecutors wrote.

But in subsequent encounters, at a St. Patrick’s Day party at an Annapolis bar and separately before a caucus meeting, Oaks told the FBI target: “I’m going to ask you for something. Just say no,” according to court documents.

The person who gave the $2,600 to Oaks, identified in court papers only as “Person #1,” was confronted by the FBI, and prosecutors say he admitted paying Oaks and another undisclosed elected official thousands of dollars over the years. The person paid for parties hosted by Oaks, as well as round-trip flights and hotel rooms in Las Vegas, according to documents.

Oaks was convicted in 1989 of stealing thousands of dollars out of his campaign account while serving in the House of Delegates. He regained his seat in 1994 and was appointed to the state Senate last year to replace a legislator who stepped down because of ill health. His salary as a state senator is $50,330 a year.

The person targeted by the FBI using Oaks told authorities that he needed the senator to support legislation favorable to the bail-bond industry, according to court documents. The documents say the person had ownership interests in a bail bond business as well as a company that provided home health care services.

The role of cash bail in pretrial release was one of the most heavily debated and aggressively lobbied issues of the 2017 session.
