Hubby Continues to Give Wife with Dementia Valentine's Day Chocolates 39 Years Later
[Breitbart] A devoted husband has gifted his wife the same box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day since 1979.

Ron Kramer, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, told KOAT that the 39-year Valentine’s Day tradition began when he asked his then-girlfriend Donna if she would like him to get her chocolates for Valentine’s Day.

Donna said yes, telling Ron that she liked the dark chocolate cremes sold at Buffet’s Candy Store ‐ a gourmet candy shop in the Albuquerque area that had been around since the 1950s.

Ron, taking Donna’s request into account, went to Buffet’s to purchase the dark chocolate cremes. The store’s staff told him that if he returned to the store with the empty box, they would refill it on Valentine’s Day the following year.

The box of candy, which cost $13 when Ron first bought it in 1979, is now worth $41. But he insists the candy is worth every penny.

"It’s awful good candy," he said. "It’s worth every dime of it."

Gowdy Opens Congressional Probe of Former Trump Aide's Clearance
[Bloomberg] The chairman of the House’s main investigative committee ramped up pressure on White House chief of staff John Kelly with a letter seeking answers on who knew about spouse abuse allegations against a former top White House aide and when they knew it.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican, said he was launching an investigation of the White House’s handling of the security clearance for former Staff Secretary Rob Porter. It raises the prospect of extended public embarrassment for the administration as White House and FBI officials could face questioning in front of a hostile committee, led by the president’s own party.
Again, if POTUS wanted OJ Simpson and Nidal Hasan to have TS/SCI clearances and be 'read on' to every Special Access Program in the beltway, the INDOC's would begin tomorrow morning. This is much to do about absolutely nothing.

Rooshians Already Meddling in Midterm Elections
[ABCNews] Three of the nation's top intelligence officials confirmed Tuesday that they have seen evidence of Russian meddling in the upcoming midterm elections ‐ part of what they say is Moscow's escalating cyber assault on American and European democracies.
Facilitated by the donks.
"We have seen Russian activity and intentions to have an impact on the next election cycle," CIA Director Mike Pompeo told the Senate intelligence committee.
National Intelligence Director Dan Coats and Adm. Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency, agreed that Russia's interference is ongoing. "This is not going to change or stop," Rogers said.

They didn't describe the activity, other than to say it was related to information warfare.
"This is pervasive," Coats said. "The Russians have a strategy that goes well beyond what is happening in the United States. While they have historically tried to do these types of things, clearly in 2016 they upped their game. They took advantage, a sophisticated advantage of social media. They are doing that not only in the United States but doing it throughout Europe and perhaps elsewhere."

#1  I'd be upset with the Russians for doing this if the United States didn't go around the world perpetrating "regime change" on any government where the people look cross eyed at us. But the problem is that we do not have the moral high ground.

OTOH, I believe there are counter measures that could be implemented that would put a stop to some of their hacking and trolling. Baraq had eight years to come up with a plan along those lines and he didn't do squat. I hope Trump doesn't waste his time the way Obama did.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Shooting outside NSA at Fort Meade MD; suspect in custody
[FoxNews] Vehicle attempts to enter National Security Agency campus; several injured.

At least 3 people have been shot at the entrance of the NSA headquarters.

A man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after a black SUV attempted to enter the National Security Agency campus in Maryland without authorization, the incident ending with the bullet-riddled vehicle being stopped by barriers outside the gate, officials said.

Several people were taken to the hospital after the vehicle tried to enter the campus on Fort Meade just after 7 a.m., the NSA said in a statement. The conditions of the injured were unknown.

“Weapons were discharged in the course of the incident, which remains under investigation at this time,” the agency said in an updated statement. “Several individuals were transported to area hospitals; however, preliminary reports do not presently indicate that there are injuries attributable to gunfire.”

Federal law enforcement officials told Fox News there were three people in the vehicle. At least one person was taken into custody. The official also said preliminary information from the scene suggested that someone tried to ram the NSA gate with their vehicle.

The shooting occurred at the visitors gate off Route 32 at the U.S. military installation. The highway was quickly closed off in both directions as police responded to the incident. Video from the scene showed an SUV riddled with bullets, the vehicle's airbags were deployed and bloodied items were on the ground. The SUV also appeared to have crashed into a white barrier.

The FBI said the incident at the military installation “has been contained” nearly two hours after the initial reports.

“Baltimore has assumed the investigative lead in the Fort Meade incident this morning,” the agency added.

President Trump was briefed on the situation, White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Ralph Peters: Putin had to approve Russian attack on US troops
[NYP] It was inevitable. Russian "mercenaries" attacked a forward base in Syria where they knew American advisors were stationed. It was a test. And our military passed.

Let’s hope the administration passes, too.

The core of the attacking force came from the Wagner Group, Russia’s version of the American thugs who worked for the company formerly known as Blackwater. But while the media refers to the Russians as mercenaries, the Wagner Group functions as an auxiliary of the Russian military ‐ it previously gave command performances in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. It exists to give Moscow (barely) plausible deniability.

It also allows the Kremlin to avoid reporting formal military casualties. Putin remembers the popular disaffection in the 1980s because of the "zinky boys," the young Russian soldiers returning home in zinc coffins in large numbers.

But the bottom line is that these killers ‐ primarily ethnic Russians, but also recruited regionally ‐ work for Putin. Russian suggestions that this was a rogue operation are ludicrous: An armored task force including hundreds of Russian citizens doesn’t attack US troops and blindside Putin. Doesn’t work that way, comrade.

#3  Blackwater were thugs?

Weird thing for Peters to say about his fellow veterans, especially when they chose to continue serving in combat roles and he went on to the dangerous realms of op eds and green rooms.

Blackwater's mistake was not realizing State would hand them to the wolves the moment they were in a bind.
Posted by: Rob Crawford || 02/14/2018 8:32 Comments || Top||

#4  ...I don't always agree with COL Peters, but when the man's right, he's right.

I would also point out that there's been no ranting about this from Washington, which leads me to believe that Chaos Actual is out in front on this one. We sent a message, too: "Go for it. Otherwise, we're prepared to forget this unpleasant accident."

There's also two variables at work here, both on the Soviet Russian side: First, the desire to get even. But the other is a little more difficult to assess - the fact that there are now a lot of Soviet Russian soldiers who have just seen, far more up close and personal than they would have liked, what the US military can do when the gloves are off. The last time they got a good look at this was during Desert Storm, and the report the Soviet Defense Ministry gave to the Politburo afterwards pulled no punches - they no longer felt capable of defeating the Americans conventionally, and whatever edge they had in nuclear weapons was being eroded even faster. That report is considered to be an important cog in the process that led to the Soviets giving in.

Do they try to double down? If so, they will be risking an appreciable fraction of Russia's out-of-the-backyard deployable strength just to get to a level where they can safely take a shot at it again. And losing that - or even a fair amount of it, even if they could somehow claim a 'win' would be worse than just walking away and dropping the subject.

Interesting times.

Mike

Professor Uses 'N-Word,' Student Shouts 'F-You,' 'Free Speech' Class Canceled at Princeton
[WeeklyStandard] Students at Princeton learn a lesson about how free speech works at the modern university.

Anthropology 212, Cultural Freedoms; Speech, Blasphemy, and Pornography cancelled for the term.

Last week Prof. Rosen received national attention for using the N-word in this class on freedom of expression. Some students walked out and protested the term’s use. One report, cited in Princeton’s main campus newspaper, says that Rosen asked, "What is worse, a white man punching a black man, or a white man calling a black man a n****r?" And when Rosen was met with disagreement of his use of the N-word, and on his continued use of the term in the academic setting, he said, he would use it, "if I think it’s necessary."

The course’s objectives, as Carolyn Rouse, chair of Princeton’s Department of Anthropology explained in defense of Rosen, was to have students, "be able to argue why hate speech should or should not be protected using an argument other than ’because it made me feel bad.’" Now that Anthropology 212 has been cancelled, Princeton students have learned a powerful lesson about free speech, though perhaps not the one Rosen intended.

John Brennan, Political Espionage, By the Book
[American Spectator] John Brennan, Obama’s CIA director, gives himself this description on his Twitter account: "Nonpartisan American who is very concerned about our collective future." In other words, Brennan is still in the disinformation business.

Liberal partisan who is very concerned about our collectivist future ‐ that would be a more apt description for one of the most politicized CIA directors ever, whose ascent to the top of the CIA began with a lie-detector test in which he revealed that he was a supporter of the Soviet-controlled American Communist party.

Brennan was the fox guarding the henhouse ‐ a role he played to the hilt for Hillary Clinton in 2016 as he set in motion a sham investigation into the Trump campaign. NBC recently signed Brennan up as a "national security" correspondent. So the fox will now get to comment on the henhouse he raided.

Where are the successors to the Kalb brothers to tsk-tsk news programs for using as "correspondents" on a story figures who have a vested interest in its outcome? Brennan is under Congressional investigation for possible perjury. But instead of challenging his yarn-spinning about the Steele dossier, NBC gives him a platform to continue it. How much longer before the media adds Sally Yates, Susan Rice, and (if they could get him) Christopher Steele as "correspondents"? What a farce.

Last week, in keeping with the media’s ho-hum atmosphere of normalized political espionage, Jonathan Winer blandly outed himself as a State Department cog in Obamagate. He made his role in it ‐ briefing John Kerry and company on the Hillary-financed Steele dossier in the heat of the campaign, then passing material from Cody Shearer, another dirt-diver for Hillary, to Steele (who then gave it to the FBI) ‐ sound like just another day at the State Department.

Part of Kerry’s retinue of conspiracy-minded radicals ‐ Winer once tried to write a film treatment for Oliver Stone (see Eric Hamburg’s JFK, Nixon, Oliver Stone, and Me) ‐ Winer works hard to affect a nonchalance about it all, casting his friendship with Steele and Sidney Blumenthal in a nonpartisan light (he met Blumenthal, he hastens to tell us in a laughable virtue-signaling aside, during the righteous days of Iran-Contra when Blumenthal "was a reporter at The Post"). Winer plays dumb about Shearer, calling him absurdly a "journalist" whose work "I did not know." But once apprised of his Trump-Russian notes by Blumenthal, Winer decided ‐ "on his own," he guiltily emphasizes ‐ to share them with Steele in order to get his "professional reaction." You know, just one professional talking to another.

He then primly informs us that he didn’t dare tell his colleagues about Shearer’s notes: "Given that I had not worked with Shearer and knew that he was not a professional intelligence officer, I did not mention or share his notes with anyone at the State Department. I did not expect them to be shared with anyone in the government." Oh, but they were ‐ by his trusted "professional" colleague Steele who just so happened to be an opposition researcher for Hillary. Winer writes the piece in a comically innocent and blameless tone ‐ "I am in no position to judge the accuracy of the information generated by Steele or Shearer" ‐ but then with considerable cheek (given that he is a blatant example of how the U.S. government interfered in the election) wraps up with a lecture about the Russian government and Trump: "I believe all Americans should be alarmed ‐ and united in the search for the truth about Russian interference in our democracy, and whether Trump and his campaign had any part in it."

Yes, "united." In other words, nailing Trump is a "nonpartisan" cause anyone worried about "our collective future" should undertake. Perhaps this media-created climate of utter fraudulence explains another exceedingly peculiar confession note that has come to light: Susan Rice emailing herself what wags call an "I am not guilty" note.

On her last day in office, she suddenly remembered a pearl of wisdom from Obama that she wanted to jot down. Musing on a previous meeting, in prose that couldn’t be more stilted if written by her defense attorney...

The Hypocrisy of the NeverTrumpers
h/t Instapundit
[OmbreOlivier] As the regular reader of this blog (Hi Sarah) knows, I’m not an American. When it came to the 2016 election I was a NeverHillary who had low expectations for a Trump presidency. It wasn’t that I didn’t like some of the things Trump said, but I was intensely skeptical that he would try to do any of them, let alone succeed. Over the last year I’m very happy to say that my skepticism has been proven wrong. Not that he’s perfect by any means and yes in part as far as I’m concerned he benefits from the bigotry of low expectations, but he’s so far exceeding those initial low expectations that I now judge him as a president in his own right as opposed to being #NotHillary.

...It is the acts that will be his real legacy and an honest NeverTrumper should take a look at them and admit that he (or she ‐ coff Jennifer Rubin coff) was wrong. But sadly (and Ms Rubin is a great example) they don’t. Instead they twist themselves into a pretzl and claim that policies that they were once in favor of are now bad because they are implemented by Trump or worse they point out that Trump’s actions in a particular policy area are not the ideal ones they would prefer in a perfect world and use that as a cudgel to assail the fact that Trump has made a change which was previously unthinkable.

...Trump, on the other hand, is combining the "art of the possible" with his "art of the deal" and getting results that are moving the goalposts ‐ the Overton Window ‐ of potential policy options back from the progressive/statist side that Obama moved them. Indeed in some areas he seems to be moving them back to the same sort of area that they were last seen under President Reagan (PBUH). Moreover, some of the areas that he’s moving back are surprising.

Contrary to all the lefty cries about "Dictator" and "Tyranny", Trump is actually trying to get congress to do its job. Witness the whole DACA thing, or earlier the way that he enabled congress to roll back most of Obama’s last minute regulations. If you are a conservative NeverTrumper it is pretty much guaranteed that you are in favor of the US Constitution as originally written ‐ three branches of government, federalism, states rights etc. ‐ so maybe you ought to look at how Trump is devolving power, reining in the unelected 4th branch ‐ the administrative state ‐ and so on. In much the same way, indeed as a continuation, Trump wants to reform the civil service hiring practices:

...He may fail but I wouldn’t count on it. And any conservative NeverTrumper who isn’t a total hypocrite should look at this and consider whether they should continue to stand in front of the Trump train shouting STOP. If they do, I trust the train will do what real trains do and squash them into paste

#1  Never Trumpers were never classical conservatives. They were con people running a racket in a niche political environment. The emperor has no clothes.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 02/14/2018 7:44 Comments || Top||

#2  There were, at the time, many good reasons to be NeverTrump. Among the good ones - he had never run a campaign or won political office, he had spent most of his life as a New York liberal Democrat, he was good friends with the Clintons, he had supported assault weapons bans, etc. It was entirely reasonable to decide, as I did, that Trump would govern as a Democrat.

As a conscientious conservative, I opposed Trump for these reasons.

There were also many bad reasons to oppose Trump. I generally lump these in with the Establishment, GOPe, "Tame" Republican sitzpinkler types. He was not one of them, hadn't put in his time and could not be relied on with regard to immigration, climate change, etc. It's OK to promise these things to people, because that's a great way to get votes. But under no circumstances can you actually deliver them.

I would think that those of us in the first category have largely changed their minds. I have. Trump is proving to be the most conservative president in at least a generation. For those in the second group, Trump is fulfilling all their worst nightmares, and it makes sense that they would continue to oppose him.

"We will strike the place where these launches are made or where they are organised," he told reporters.

But Mr Macron said French intelligence had so far found no evidence that banned chemical weapons had been used. His comments follow numerous reports of suspected chlorine attacks in Syria since early January.

Nine people were treated for breathing difficulties after a bomb believed to be filled with the chemical was dropped on a rebel-held town earlier this month.

The Syrian opposition said a government helicopter dropped the bomb on Saraqeb, in the north-western province of Idlib.

The Syrian government strongly denies using chemical weapons and says it does not target civilians.

Self-Deprecating Humor Linked to Greater Psychological Wellness, Study Finds
[Independent] Frequent use of self-deprecating humour has been linked to a better overall psychological wellbeing, a study has discovered.

When you hear someone making fun of themselves, you would usually assume that they’re doing so to conceal their insecurities.

However, a recent study has found that the opposite may be the case; that making yourself the butt of your jokes actually demonstrates greater levels of happiness and self-assurance.

University of Granada researchers from the Mind, Brain and Behaviour Research Centre (CIMCYC) decided to explore different kinds of humour to determine whether a person’s comedic streak is connected to the way in which they cope with anger.

Palestinian Diplomat: 'We Are Very Proud That We Are Stone Throwers'
[PJ] A Palestinian diplomat, speaking to Canadian college students visiting the United Nations headquarters in New York, said that Palestinians are proud of their history of throwing stones at Israeli forces.

Further, they will continue teaching their children to do just that:

Israeli news outlet Ynet obtained the recording of Abdallah Abushawesh, a member of the Palestinian delegation to the UN, making the comments to international relations students from McGill University. Abushawesh serves as a senior adviser to the UN's Development Group, Ynet reports.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg Talks About Her Own 'MeToo' Moment
Excerpt:
[Townhall] Ginsburg also recounted her own story of harassment that she experienced when she was a student at Cornell.

She said she asked a chemistry professor for additional help and he gave her what he called "practice exam." Ginsburg learned the next day that the practice exam he had given her was the real exam. She said she was outraged.
"I knew just what he expected in return," she said, saying she went back to him and asked "how dare you?"

"There were many incidents like that," she added, "but in those days the attitude was, 'what can we do about it? Nothing. Boys will be boys.'"

China-Japan-Koreas
The director of the FBI says the whole of Chinese society is a threat to the US ‐ and Americans must step up as a society to defend themselves
[Business Insider] FBI director Christopher Wray reiterated a commonly held view on Tuesday that China is seeking to become a global superpower through unconventional means ‐ but framed the threat China poses to the US as not just a governmental one, but as a societal one, too.

Speaking before the Senate Intelligence Committee alongside the heads of other US intelligence agencies, Wray told Senators that China is using a host of methods to undermine American military, economic, cultural, and informational power across the globe that rely on more than just China's state institutions.

"One of the things we're trying to do is view the China threat as not just a whole of government threat, but a whole of society threat on their end," Wray said, "and I think it's going to take a whole-of-society response by us."

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats expressed a similar sentiment after Sen. Marco Rubio asked him about China's plans to overtake the US as the world's supreme world power.

"There is no question that what you have just articulated is what's happening with China," Coats said. "They're doing it in a very smart way; they're doing it in a very effective way; they are looking beyond their own region."

Coats said multiple agencies are conducting "intensive studies" to understand the ways China is looking to carry out its global agenda.

Iraqi militia vows to back Hezbollah in war with Israel
[IsraelTimes] Head of Iran-sponsored Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba says his organization will stand in a 'single front' with terror group against Jewish state

The head of the powerful Iraqi Shiite militia Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba pledged on Tuesday to stand alongside its Lebanese ally Hezbollah if a new war breaks out with Israel.

Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba and Hezbollah have fought side-by-side to bolster Syrian government troops since 2013, most prominently against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. terror group in eastern Syria.

On Tuesday, the movement’s secretary general Akram al-Kaabi visited the tomb of top Hezbollah terror commander Imad Mughniyeh to commemorate the 10 years since his death.

"We in the Iraqi resistance stand with Hezbollah, and we will stand with Hezbollah in any Israeli attack or action against it," Kaabi said.

He pledged to fight "with Hezbollah in a single row, on a single front, just as we stood with them on a single front in Iraq or Syria."

Kaabi spoke in Beirut’s southern suburbs, where Hezbollah has a strong support base.

Both Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba and Hezbollah are backed by Iran. They fought alongside Syrian government troops and other allied groups to oust IS from key cities in eastern Syria last year, including Albu Kamal.

Hezbollah has also dispatched top commanders and advisers to Iraq to help the paramilitary Hashed al-Shaabi force.

In June, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah warned that hundreds of thousands of Arab and Moslem fighters would be ready to fight against Israel in a future war.

It "would open the door for hundreds of thousands of fighters from all around the Arab and Islamic world to participate in this fight ‐ from Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistain," he said.

Kaabi is the second top Iraqi militia leader in recent months to come to Leb in a show of support to Hezbollah.

Senior Hashed commander Qais al-Khazali, who heads the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia, visited southern Leb in December.

Palestinian diplomat: We'll continue teaching our kids to throw stones
[Ynet] Abdallah Abushawesh, member of the Paleostinian delegation to the UN, tells visiting Canadian students 'We're experts at throwing stones, we are very proud to do that,' adding he 'never missed an opportunity to throw stones' during the first intifada.

A Paleostinian diplomat speaking to students at the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
headquarters in New York told them the Paleostinians were proud to be throwing stones at Israeli forces and will continue teaching their children to do so.

In a recording obtained by Ynet, Abdallah Abushawesh, who serves as a senior adviser to the UN's Development Group and as a member of the Paleostinian UN mission, is heard saying in broken English, "We are very clever and very expert at throwing the stones. We are very proud to do that. We will not stop to learn our kids (to do that)."

To the sound of sniggering from his listeners, Abushawesh went on to say that every Paleostinian caught throwing stones by Israel gets sent to jail. "We are very proud that we are stone throwers. I'm one of them. Now I became a little bit older, but I stay resistant in the name of my kids," he continued.

The Paleostinian diplomat later told the students about his own past as a stone-thrower during the first intifada. "I was in high school. I never missed an opportunity to throw stones. This is our life. We develop our resistance every day. We're proud of it," he said.

Abushawesh was speaking to a group of international relations students from McGill University who were at the UN for a tour and a series of meetings as part of their program.

The students also met with Paleostinian envoy to the UN, Riyad Mansour, who told them about Paleostinian efforts to be recognized as a state by the UN.

"There's a country in the Security Council, the US, which won't allow us to realize what's ours, and it is blocking us for political and ideological reasons, and not for legal reasons," Mansour said.

Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, slammed Abushawesh's comments, saying, "The Paleostinians are no longer trying to hide the truth. The Paleostinian leadership and its representatives are inciting against Israel and openly encouraging terrorism. The international community must not allow it."

"It cannot be that inside the UN, which is supposed to make peace and protect human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
, a diplomat will incite to violence and terrorism, which wound and even kill innocent Israelis," Danon added.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
CIA Ex-Director Brennan's Perjury Peril
[Real Clear Investigations] House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes next plans to investigate the role former CIA Director John Brennan and other Obama intelligence officials played in promoting the salacious and unverified Steele dossier on Donald Trump -- including whether Brennan perjured himself in public testimony about it.

In his May 2017 testimony before the intelligence panel, Brennan emphatically denied the dossier factored into the intelligence community’s publicly released conclusion last year that Russia meddled in the 2016 election "to help Trump’s chances of victory."

Brennan also swore that he did not know who commissioned the anti-Trump research document (excerpt here), even though senior national security and counterintelligence officials at the Justice Department and FBI knew the previous year that the dossier was funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Last week, Nunes (R-Calif.) released a declassified memo exposing surveillance "abuses" by the Obama DOJ and FBI in their investigation of Trump’s ties to Russia. It said the agencies relied heavily on the uncorroborated dossier to take out a warrant to secretly surveil a Trump adviser in the heat of the 2016 presidential election, even though they were aware the underlying "intelligence" supporting the wiretap order was political opposition research funded by Clinton allies ‐ a material fact they concealed from FISA court judges in four separate applications.

Court orders full restoration of DACA program
[WASHINGTONTIMES] A federal judge in New York ruled Tuesday that the government must fully restart the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals deportation amnesty and accept brand new applicants as well as renewals, throwing a potential wrench in the ongoing debate over the fate of "Dreamers" on Capitol Hill.

Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis said the administration does have the power to revoke DACA, but it must give a sound reason for doing so ‐ and the Homeland Security Department’s September 2017 rationale fell far short of what is required in that regard.
Appointed by Bill Clinton in 2000! Nuff said.
He even used Mr. Trump’s own tweets as evidence that the DACA program was ended precipitously, pointing to President Trump’s claims that he could "revisit this issue" as proof the program could have been continued.

Judge Garaufis is the second federal judge to rule Mr. Trump’s aides bungled the phaseout ‐ but his decision is the most wide-ranging, ordering the government to not only allow those already in the program to renew their applications but also ordering the government to accept new applications.

Once again take the issue straight to the Supreme Court, get a ruling that supports the president, and move on. Or get a ruling that supports the judge, rewrite the rationale that the judge objected to, and move on. President Trump has made it clear he does not object to the principle embodied in DACA, but that it was illegally done by his predecessor, and needs to result from the passage of Congressional legislation in the customary fashion, not by presidential phone and pen.

India-Pakistan
Pakistain bans Hafiz Saeed. Really. Honest.
[Al Ahram] Pakistain has quietly amended its anti-terror laws to ban those listed as forces of Evil by the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
, a move which paves the way for Islamabad to proceed against suspected criminal masterminds of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The change was made by President Mamnoon Hussain on Friday, and published by the law ministry late Monday.

"The amendment means that all individuals and entities listed by the United Nations also stand banned under Pak laws now," a senior government official told AFP.

He declined to say what actions were being taken after the change, and analysts said it was unclear why it was needed when Pakistain is already a member of the UN.

The move comes after Washington piled pressure on Pakistain last November to take action against Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
, the alleged criminal mastermind of the Mumbai attacks which killed 166 people, after he was released from house arrest in the eastern city of Lahore.

Pakistain says there is not enough evidence to charge him, and denies harbouring krazed killers.

However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the White House has said that freeing him "belies Pak claims that it will not provide sanctuary for terrorists".

Security analyst Amir Rana said the Pak move may have been in anticipation of the meeting in Gay Paree next week of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an inter-governmental organization to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.

Observers say Pakistain fears being put on money laundering and terrorist financing lists.

Saeed heads the charity Jamaat-ud-Dawa
...the front organization of Lashkar-e-Taiba...
(JuD), believed to be a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
(LeT), a krazed killer group that battles Indian troops in disputed Kashmire and was blamed for the Mumbai attacks.

Six Americans were among those killed during the three-day siege in Mumbai, when button men who arrived by sea sparked battles with Indian commandos.

The drama brought nuclear-armed India and Pakistain to the brink of war.

Saeed, who has a $10 million US bounty on his head, has denied involvement. He was listed by the UN in December 2008 for being associated with LeT, as well as having links to the al-Qaeda terror network and Talibs.

JuD is similarly listed by the UN as a terrorist group. No officials from the charity were immediately available for comment.

He said the boom-mobile exploded shortly after it was captured and around 250 kgs of explosives, 8 rockets, some hand grenades, and some other explosives were also discovered from the vehicle.

The anti-government armed bad boy groups including the Taliban

[DAWN] A masked man threw acid at a young woman at her residence in Punjab's Sialkot district on Tuesday, police told DawnNews.

According to the local security officials, scores of Taliban Lions of Islam launched a coordinated attack from four different angles in Nish district, sparking heavy shootout with the security forces.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
How Iran is Learning from Russia in Syria
[Institute for the Study of War] Iranian military cooperation with Russia in Syria is dramatically increasing Tehran's ability to plan and conduct complex conventional operations. Iranians are learning by seeing and by doing, and are consciously trying to capture lessons-learned in Syria for use throughout their military and para-military forces. Iran is fielding a conventional force capability to complement and in some cases supplant its reliance on asymmetric means of combat. Russia is assisting Iran's military leadership conduct this effort. It is introducing Iran and its proxies to signature Russian campaign-design concepts such as cauldron battles, multiple simultaneous and successive operations, and frontal aviation in Syria. These concepts are the fruit of almost a century of advanced Soviet and Russian thought and hard-won experience in conventional military operations. This knowledge-transfer can help the Iranian military advance its understanding of conventional war far more rapidly than it might otherwise be able to do. It can help Iran become a formidable conventional military power in the Middle East in relatively short order, permanently changing the balance of power and the security environment in the region. ...

Kuwait condemns Philippine president's call to evacuate workers
[Al Ahram] A top Kuwaiti official condemned on Tuesday a call by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte to evacuate his country's workers from Kuwait, suggesting Duterte could damage ties between the two countries.
It ain't like all Filipino servants are murdered and their bodies stored in refrigerators...
Duterte said last week that his government would ask private airlines to evacuate Filipino nationals from Kuwait within 72 hours, after the discovery of the dead body of a Filipino migrant worker in a freezer.

Two planes full of workers arrived in Manila from Kuwait on Monday on flights provided for free by commercial airlines at the president's request. On Sunday, the Philippine labor minister said more than 2,200 Filipinos were ready to take up Duterte’s offer.

"We are surprised and we condemn statements from the Philippine president, especially as we are in contact with the Philippines on a high level to explain the workers' conditions in Kuwait," said Kuwait's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah.

He was speaking at a joint news conference with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during a meeting in Kuwait of the global coalition against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
"Escalation does not serve the ties between Kuwait and the Philippines," Sheikh Sabah said, adding that 170,000 Filipinos "live a decent life in Kuwait ... but separate accidents unfortunately happen, and we are providing our Filipino counterparts with the results of the investigations."

Africa Subsaharan
South Africa: President Zuma Enters His Last Days in Office
[All Africa] President Jacob Zuma faces a vote of no confidence tabled in Parliament by his own party within days if he does not resign his office.

Leaders of the ANC are still hoping to avoid his and the party's "humiliation" by having further talks with him.

But the party wants its new leader, Cyril Ramaphosa, to deliver the annual "State of the Nation" address at the formal opening of this year's session of Parliament.

This became clear on Tuesday when the party's secretary-general, Ace Magashule, announced that Zuma had been "recalled" as a public representative, and the ANC caucus in Parliament was summoned to an urgent meeting on Wednesday.

In South Africa, members of Parliament are not directly elected by voters but are chosen by their parties on the basis of the proportion of votes a party wins. The ANC's practice is to "deploy" and "recall" MPs at the discretion of party leaders.

Once a parliament is constituted, it elects the president of the country ‐ inevitably until now the leader of the ruling party.

Magashule and his deputy, Jessie Duarte ‐ both among the last of the top leaders of the party to support Zuma ‐ delivered a letter to the president on Tuesday informing him that the ANC's national executive committee had decided to recall him.

The decision, reached in debate beginning after lunch on Monday and lasting until the early hours of Tuesday, had not been easy, Magashule told an interviewer on the ANC's Twitter feed. "Indeed, President Zuma does have support," he said.

Zuma asked the party that he remains as president of the country for another three to six months in order to fulfil his roles as a regional leader in the Southern African Development Community and in the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) group of nations.

US, allies pushing to place Pakistan on terror-financing watchlist: report
[DAWN] The United States and its European allies have tabled a motion with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) with a view to placing Pakistain on a watchlist of countries considered non-compliant with global anti-terror financing measures, an exclusive Rooters report said on Tuesday.

Miftah Ismail, Pakistain's de facto finance minister, told the news agency that the US and UK had nominated Pakistain to be put on the watchdog’s international money-laundering and terror-financing ’grey list’ a few weeks ago, before La Belle France and Germany joined them as co-sponsors.

"We are now working with the US, UK, Germany and La Belle France for the nomination to be withdrawn," Ismail, who is the adviser to the prime minister on finance, revenue and economic affairs, told Rooters. "We are also quite hopeful that even if the US did not withdraw the nomination that we will prevail and not be put on the watchlist."

The motion against Pakistain could be adopted at the FATF meeting scheduled to take place in Gay Paree from February 18 to 23.

The FATF maintains grey and black lists for identifying countries with weak measures to combat money laundering and terror financing. The watchdog does not have the powers to impose sanctions on a country found not meeting the required standards. However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
its listing can affect international transactions from the country concerned as those would then become subject to greater scrutiny.

province.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in a statement said the incident took place late on Monday night after armed individuals hurled hand grenade on the residence of Hamid Hassan in the city.

The statement further added that Hassan has survived the attack unhurt but the attack has caused some damages to his property.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) ruled out the involvement of the terror groups in the attack and said the criminal gangs had earlier demanded money from the family of Hassan.

The criminal gangs had also warned the family of Hassan of attacks in case they did not receive the money, ACB said, adding that the family of Hassan had also informed the security authorities regarding the threats.

According to ACB, the attack on Monday night was carried out almost two weeks after the family of Hassan had received threats from the criminal gangs.

The Cricket Board of Afghanistan strongly condemned the attack and called a raid on a major source of happiness of the Afghan people.

Dem AGs press Trump officials not to include citizenship question in census
[THEHILL] State Attorneys General Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), Eric Schneiderman (D-N.Y.) and Maura Healey (D-Mass.), joined by 16 others sent a blistering letter Monday warning Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross against approving a question about citizenship status in the 2020 Census.

Doing so, they said, would be unconstitutional.
The nation has no need to know how many non-citizens are inhabiting it.
Also, adding a citizenship question this late in the planning for the 2020 Census, they argued, “would significantly depress participation, causing a population undercount that would disproportionately harm states and cities with large immigrant communities.”

“This undercount would frustrate the Census Bureau’s obligation under the Constitution to determine ‘the whole number of persons in each state,’ threaten our states’ fair representation in Congress, dilute our states’ role in the Electoral College, and deprive our states of their fair share of hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funds that are allocated in part on decennial Census data,” they wrote.

N.Korea warms to S.Korea after visit, volume down on border propaganda
[Al Ahram] North Korea's leader said he wants to boost the "warm climate of reconciliation and dialogue" with South Korea after his high-level delegation returned from a visit to the South, as his foes reiterated the need to keep up maximum pressure and sanctions.

Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
gave instructions for measures aimed at more inter-Korean engagement after his younger sister Kim Yo Jong led a three-day visit to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, North Korea's state media reported on Tuesday.

It did not specify what those instructions were.

The United States has appeared to endorse deeper post-Olympics engagement between the two Koreas that could lead to talks between Pyongyang and Washington. South's President Moon Jae-in said on Tuesday the United States is open to talking with North Korea, Moon's front man told a briefing.

"The United States sees inter-Korean dialogue in a positive light and has expressed its openness for talks with the North," Moon told Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis, according to the front man.

US officials also want tough international sanctions to be ramped up to push North Korea to give up its nuclear programme.

-War on Police-
Off-duty police officer shot and killed in downtown Chicago
[CBSNEWS] An off-duty police officer was shot and killed at the James R. Thompson Center in downtown reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. The officer was later identified as 53-year-old Cmdr. Paul Bauer of the city's 18th District.

Tactical officers were on routine patrol Tuesday and observed an "individual" acting suspiciously around 2:30 p.m. When they tried speak with the individual, a physical struggle ensued and the person escaped, Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson said during a news conference.

Bauer, a 31-year veteran, was in the area, overheard police radio transmission and confronted the individual, Johnson said. An armed physical confrontation ensued and Bauer was shot multiple times, he added.

Johnson said the suspect is in jug and police have recovered the weapon.

"I ask the citizens of this city keep the Bauer family in their prayers," Johnson said, adding that he would meet with his wife and daughter. "It's a difficult day for us. We will get through it. I ask the city for their thoughts and prayers -- any loss of life is tragic."

Witnesses told CBS Chicago that coppers warned residents to get off the streets shortly after shots were fired, and began blocking off the streets and entrances to the Thompson Center.

"They actually had us locked in Walgreens," one person in the area said. "They taped it off, so we couldn't get out. Just for a minute, and then they all hopped in their cop cars, and they all went south on Clark."

'Time-traveller' claiming to be from 2030 PASSES a lie detector test after claiming that Donald Trump will be re-elected
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] A 'time-traveller' who says he is from the future has passed a lie detector test after claiming Donald Trump will be re-elected and Artificial Intelligence will take over.

In a startling YouTube video posted by Apex TV the man, whose face and voice have been distorted to hide his identity, claims he has risked his life to travel back in time.

Apex TV says it is 'one of the biggest voices of paranormal content on YouTube', with over 56 million views and 100,000 subscribers.

His mission, he says, is to tell those alive now what the world has in store.

Among his predictions is the claim that Google Glass-style robotics will spread across the globe.

Technology will also have developed to the point where it will be able to independently run a home.

Bitcoin will be increasingly popular but pennies and cents will still be in use.

In 2030 he says the US president is a mysterious figure called Ilana Remikee.

He also suggests global warming has caused temperatures in North America to increase while Europe has cooled.

Telegram app was targeted by crypto mining malware, Kaspersky Lab says
[AlAhram] Previously undetected malware directed at users of the desktop version of the messaging app Telegram has been discovered by the Russian security firm Kaspersky Lab, Kaspersky said on Tuesday.

The malicious software has been used to target Russian users since March 2017, Kaspersky said in a statement. It was designed to trick users of Telegram's desktop computer software into enlisting their machines to mine cryptocurrencies like Monero and Zcash.

Telegram ranks as the world's ninth most popular mobile messaging app and expects to hit 200 million users during the first quarter of 2018, according to a recent white paper by the company. Only its desktop computer version was targeted.

The malware exploited a feature that allows its messaging software to recognise Arabic and Hebrew language text, which is read right to left.

By using a hidden character in the feature that reversed the order of the characters, the attackers could rename a file, triggering the installation of the malware. Examples of the malicious software were only found in Russia, Kaspersky said.

Kaspersky Lab said clues found in the code indicate connections to Russian cybercriminals. It said such messaging app vulnerabilities are not unique to Telegram, noting that last month it had found a way for hackers to steal WhatsApp messages.

Kaspersky said it had reported the vulnerability to Telegram in October and the issue appears to have been fixed.

In a statement posted on an a Telegram technical channel, the company said the attack was a form of social engineering that only worked if a user was tricked into downloading an image file. It was fixed by Telegram in November, the post said.

"This is not a real vulnerability on Telegram Desktop, no one can remotely take control of your computer or Telegram unless you open a (malicious) file," Telegram said.

Telegram is preparing the biggest initial coin offering, in a private sale of tokens, which could be traded as an alternative currency, similar to Bitcoin or Ethereum, an investment proposal seen by Rooters showed. The offering could raise up to $2 billion, according to media reports.

US drone destroys Russian-made tank in Syria
[Ynet] A US military drone aircraft destroyed a Russian-made T-72 tank in Syria over the weekend, US officials said on Tuesday, in the second defensive strike against pro-Syrian government forces in less than a week.

No US-led coalition or coalition-backed local forces were killed in the strike by a US MQ-9 Reaper drone, which took place near Al Tabiyeh, Syria, on Sunday.

Lieutenant General Jeffrey Harrigian, top US Air Force general in the Middle East, declined in a briefing with news hounds to speculate on who was driving the tank. One US official, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said at least two pro-Syrian government forces were killed.

The US military said it destroyed the tank after it moved within firing range of the US-backed forces while being supported by artillery fire.

Erdogan warns foreign companies over gas drilling near Cyprus
[Al Ahram] President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...
on Tuesday warned foreign energy companies not to "overstep the mark" in the Mediterranean, after The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
's warships blocked an Italian drilling vessel seeking to begin exploration for gas off Cyprus.
Watch out for the Ottoman Slap®!
The growing standoff between Turkey and Cyprus over exploiting energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean risks further complicating stalled efforts to reunify the island following the collapse of peace talks last year.

"Don't think that we have ignored the opportunistic attempts to search for natural gas in Cyprus waters and Aegean coast," Erdogan said in a televised speech to his party in parliament.

"We warn those overstepping the mark with miscalculations in Cyprus and the Aegean," Erdogan added.

Italia's energy giant ENI said its ship had been ordered to stop by Ottoman Turkish ships last week over "military activities in the destination area" as it was on course to start exploring in block 3 of Cyprus's exclusive economic zone.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Ottoman Turkish troops invaded and occupied the northern third of the island in response to a Greek military junta-sponsored coup.

Pakistan will have to pay for attack in held Kashmir: India
[DAWN] Pakistain will have to pay for Saturday’s bad boy attack on an Indian army camp in Sunjuwan in Jammu, Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman warned on Monday, a day after Islamabad urged New Delhi not to whip up war hysteria.

Ms Sitharaman alleged that the attack in Sunjuwan was carried out by Jaish-e-Mohammed bad boys. She added that the perpetrators were assisted by Pakistain.

Addressing a presser over the security situation in Jammu, she said JeM chief Masood Azhar was the criminal mastermind of the attack while there was also local support to the assault.

On Sunday, Pakistain’s foreign ministry strongly rejected similar allegations voiced by the Indian media.

"A particular section in the Indian media runs with their innuendos to malign Pakistain and whips up public frenzy. We are confident that the world community would take due cognisance of India’s smear campaign against Pakistain, and the deliberate creation of war hysteria," the foreign ministry statement said.

Bach dismisses ‘hijack’ fears as unified Korean team thrashed again
[DAWN] Olympic chief Thomas Bach dismissed concerns North Korea had tried to "hijack" the Pyeongchang Winter Games on Monday as the unified Korean ice hockey team saw their hopes dashed after another heavy defeat.
"Curses! Foiled again!"
On a day when strong winds caused a series of falls in the women’s slopestyle snowboarding final and forced the women’s giant slalom to be postponed, Bach said he hoped the Games had paved the way for greater peace on the Korean peninsula.

Bach, who will visit Pyongyang after the Olympics, said the North’s high-profile participation was a strictly sporting matter, playing down fears that the isolated country was manipulating the Games to suit its political agenda.

"This is about sport and this the IOC made very clear," Bach said in an interview. "This is about the role of sport to build bridges, to open doors and nothing more.

Liberals Furious That Trump Wants To Replace Food Stamps With Actual Food
[DAILYWIRE] In his big budget proposal on Monday, President Trump offered a novel idea: Instead of giving people in need government stamps they can redeem for food, why not just give them actual food?
Ah, the good old days...
As you might guess, liberals were enraged by the notion. How dare Trump try to take away food stamps from hungry people and give them — of all things — food!
Yep. Used to actually have to go down to the firehouse to pick the stuff up. We didn't have a car, so we had to walk the whole way there and back. Musta been six, seven blocks!
Here's how the liberal HuffPost saw it: "Facing a trillion-dollar deficit because of his just-passed tax cuts, President Donald Trump has an idea for how to get some of that money back: making poor people eat beans and rice."
It wuz terrible! No potato chips! No Fritos. Instead we got flour, powdered eggs, lard, butter, Spam. canned pork and gravy. You can't eat that stuff right outa the container!
Oh the humanity!
Mom had to spend time unwrapping stuff and cooking!
Currently, food stamps — known officially as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — are provided for some 42 million people, 80% of whom get food vouchers each month worth at least $90 per person. They can be redeemed at many stores for food, but the program is rife with abuse.
You could eat on a block of cheese for six months. But it just wudn't Cheetos. I did trade one once for a baseball bat. We had a half dozen of them, couldn't eat 'em fast enough. We didn't have indoor plumbing, but with that much cheese, did it matter?

Apart from my misgivings about EBT cards in general I wouldn't have a particular problem except for one thing. The gas station is in the same strip mall as a big super market. Now you know that people will use their EBT cards for junk food in the convenience store because that's pretty much all the convenience store has to offer. What's worse is that the same junk food will cost a lot more in the convenience store than it would in the super market. To put it mildly, this is wasteful.

Trump proposes eliminating federal funding for PBS, NPR
[THEHILL] President Trump's newly proposed budget includes a proposal to end federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), part of a package that includes $300 billion in new spending overall.
If it was "Public" it would be neutral in outlook. It ain't, so it ain't.
CPB provides federal funding for PBS and National Public Radio stations.

"The Budget proposes to eliminate Federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) over a two year period," according to the proposal.

"CPB grants represent a small share of the total funding for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR), which primarily rely on private donations to fund their operations," it continues.

"To conduct an orderly transition away from Federal funding, the Budget requests $15.5 million in 2019 and $15 million in 2020, which would include funding for personnel costs of $16.2 million, rental costs of $8.9 million; and other costs totaling $5.4 million."
Because Dems feel the nation needs to continue funding 80 year old dinosaurs like Mark Shields to lecture and talk down to us? Also, "immigrant journalist" to constantly berate us as illiterate racists while they are paid with our tax dollars?

Afghanistan
Ashraf Ghani is not an ethnonationalist
[Al Jazeera] On February 5, in an article published in the opinion section of Al Jazeera English, author Eisa Khan Ayoobi classified Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
as an "ethnonationalist", surprising many people who have been following Ghani's political career and tenure as president closely.

I have known Ghani personally for several years - I served as the senior policy adviser at the Afghanistan Security Transition Commission which he chaired, I was a member of his electoral campaign team on behalf of the Afghanistan Social Democratic Party, and for the past year, I have been serving as a deputy minister in his National Unity Government. I can confidently say that the president I know and work closely with is not an ethnonationalist.

Health minister forms committee to probe Hafizabad 'spinal tap' gang
[DAWN] Health Minister Saira Afzal Tarar on Tuesday ordered the formation of a committee to investigate five tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
people accused of tapping 'spinal fluid' from at least 15 women in Hafizabad and Gujranwala after tricking them into believing that it was a requirement for participation in a government welfare project.

The committee, headed by the area's deputy commissioner, has been given three days to submit its report on the matter.

Hafizabad District Police Officer (DPO) Dr Sardar Ghias Gull earlier told Dawn that the five suspects, including one woman, had told their victims that they would help them acquire financial assistance through the prime minister’s dowry fund.

The suspects ‐ identified as Nadeem, Muhammad Aslam, his wife Amna Bibi, and Irfan ‐ would allegedly sell the fluid they had tapped to Sajid Masih, who worked as a sweeper at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital’s kidney ward.

The DPO said that Sajid had asked the suspects to provide him with spinal fluid from at least 15 women, which he would then sell abroad. They were promised a sum of Rs40,000 for their efforts.

DPO Ghias added that Nadeem, the prime suspect, would pretend to be a DHQ Hospital employee and use that as a cover to tap 'spinal fluid' from women, mostly from financially distressed backgrounds. He said that Nadeem had confessed to conducting a spinal tap on more than 15 women.

He said that at least 16 victims of the horrendous scam had so far recorded their statements with the police regarding the extraction of fluid from their spinal cords. All of them said they had been medically examined at the Hafizabad DHQ Hospital.

Coal Company Inked Deal With Chinese Company While Pressing Trump For Bailout
[FreeBeacon] A major coal-mining company that has pushed the Trump administration for a bailout of the industry quietly signed a deal last fall with a Chinese manufacturer to produce mining equipment and did not disclose it to the White House or other government agencies.

The deal with China is setting off alarm bells for free-market advocates and others who support President Trump's "America First" policies, as well as the administration's efforts to punish China for its unfair trade practices of "dumping" cheap goods in the United States, including aluminum and steel, as well as washing machines and solar panels.
"Alarm bells" is a rather light description.
A spokesman for Murray Energy, whose CEO Robert Murray is a major Trump backer, confirmed the deal with Zhengzhou Coal Mining Machinery Group, Co., or ZMJ, to make mine shields. The spokesman said it was necessary to meet a sudden time crunch to keep a mine in Utah running.

Mine shields are hydraulic roof supports that keep the walls and ceilings of mines from collapsing and are partly composed of steel.

A Facebook post first tipped off critics to the Chinese business deal. During a mid-January trip to China, Murray Energy executive Eric Lipinski marveled at the technology and height of the 28-foot tall mine shields made by the Chinese company.

"Spent the morning touring the ZMJ Factory in China," Lipinski wrote on Facebook in a post he later deleted. "We are building equipment here for our mine in Utah. For my mining buddies...check out these shields that they are building here in China and Mongolia."
Ah, death by Facebook.
"They are over 28′ high. Unbelievable how big these are and the fact that they are used underground," he wrote in the post.
We used to engineer and build awe-inspiring stuff also, Mr. Murray. Remember?

More at link including some interesting background.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran military official: West used lizards for nuclear spying
First it was American spy squirrels in Iran, then Egypt suffered from Israeli spy dolphins or sharks (I don’t remember which) in the Red Sea, then Israeli spy herons were shot down in Jordan or Lebanon... Clearly Allah has chosen to permit his believers to be harassed for reasons of his own.
[Al Ahram] The former chief-of-staff of Iran's armed forces said Tuesday that Western spies had used lizards which could "attract atomic waves" to spy on the country's nuclear programme.
"Unh! Godzirra! Let's run!"
Hassan Firuzabadi, senior military advisor to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was responding to questions from local media on the recent arrest of environmentalists.

He said he did not know the details of the cases, but that the West had often used tourists, scientists and environmentalists to spy on Iran.

"Several years ago, some individuals came to Iran to collect aid for Paleostine... We were suspicious of the route they chose," he told the reformist ILNA news agency.

"In their possessions were a variety of reptile desert species like lizards, chameleons... We found out that their skin attracts atomic waves and that they were nuclear spies who wanted to find out where inside the Islamic republic of Iran we have uranium mines and where we are engaged in atomic activities," he said.

His comments came after news that a leading Iranian-Canadian environmentalist, Kavous Seyed Emami, had died in prison after he was incarcerated
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
along with other members of his wildlife NGO last month.

The deputy head of the Environmental Protection Organisation, Kaveh Madani, was also reportedly detained temporarily over the weekend.

Military spy agencies did not cooperate in tracing caller, IHC told
[DAWN] Inter-Services Intelligence
...the Pak military intelligence agency that controls the military -- heads of ISI typically get promoted into the Chief of Army Staff position. It serves as a general command center for favored turban groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, tries to influence the politix of neighboring countries, and carries out a (usually) low-level war against India in Kashmir...
(ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) did not cooperate with the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to trace the origin of a leaked call that disclosed the disbursement of certain amounts to the participants of the Faizabad sit-in, an IB official told the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday.

Speaking before Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, IB Joint Director General Anwar Ali said civil agencies had expressed their inability to identify the caller, whereas ISI and MI did not respond to IB’s request seeking identification of the caller.

The unknown caller spoke about the Faizabad sit-in staged in November last year with someone on phone.

He commented on different aspects of the sit-in and the flawed policy to handle the protesters.

He also named certain personalities that disbursed money among the protesters.

In the written reply submitted to the IHC, the IB stated: "Contact was made to the [ISI] at responsible level, but no response was received." The response of MI was also the same.

The IB said the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

Forensic Science Agency and the National Forensic Science Agency lacked facilities to trace the caller while the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) also showed its incapability to handle such a matter.

Chelsea bomber gets multiple life prison sentences for New York blast that injured 30
[FOXNEWS] The convicted terrorist who planted two pressure-cooker bombs on New York City streets -- including one that injured 30 people with a rain of shrapnel when it detonated -- was sentenced Tuesday to multiple life terms in prison.

Ahmad Khan Rahimi
...the naturalized Afghan known wolf (another who came as a result of chain migration, after his father received asylum) who didn’t get to die a martyr in a hail of bullets as planned after planting bombs in Manhattan and New Jersey. He was inspired by ISIS and Al Qaeda, and trained in a Taliban feeder madrassa in Pakistan. After his second stay there, his father reported him to the FBI, who were not suffciently impressed. In the early days of the investigation his name was given as Ahmad Khan Rahami and Ahmad Khan Rahmani...
, 29, was convicted in October of planting pressure-cooker bombs in New York and New Jersey on Sept. 17, 2016.

The blast in New York City happened hours after a small pipe bomb went off during a Marine Corps 5K run in Seaside Heights, N.J. No one was injured in that kaboom because the race had been delayed. A subsequent two-day manhunt ended in a shootout with police in New Jersey, where Rahimi was shot several times. No police were maimed.

Federal prosecutors said Rahimi has not shown remorse since his arrest, and has tried to radicalize fellow prisoners at the federal jail in New York.

"He is proud of what he did, scornful of the American justice system, and as dedicated as ever to his terrorist ideology," they wrote.

When asked to speak at his sentencing Tuesday, Rahimi said he doesn't "harbor hate for anyone."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Aly Raisman poses unclothed for Sports Illustrated: 'Women do not have to be modest to be respected'
[YAHOO] Olympic great Aly Raisman has returned to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, and this time, she brought along a message.

The 23-year-old, who led the U.S. gymnastics team to gold medals in 2012 and 2016, posed with inspiring words scrawled on her body, such as "survivor" across her chest, "live 4 you" and "every voice matters" down one arm, and "fierce" on the other. "Women do not have to be modest to be respected" ran down one side of her body. There was no swimsuit, no clothing at all, just those words, which Raisman ‐ not the photographer or stylists ‐ chose, as did all the women featured in the what the magazine called its "In Her Own Words" project.
Women do not have to be modest to be respected.

That's a bald statement without any backup documentation. She's a really pretty girl, with a really nice birthday suit, but I can't think of many religions that don't at least encourage women to be modest. Tantrism, maybe. The rest of it is just standard blah crap. Labeling yourself a "survivor" just means you're not dead. Life's full of things you survive, child abuse by an athletic director sometimes among them. Calling yourself "fierce" doesn't mean much. One moment you're fierce, another you might be cringing in horror. It depends on the circumstances: the accuracy of the enemy's artillery, whether the wing's gonna fall off your plane because there's a big hole in it, whether you can outrun the mudslide. I'll betcha the Herculaneum Volunteer Fire Department was "fierce" until the volcano blew.

The time when women were taught to be ashamed of their bodies might be over, but why's it so absolutely necessary to flaunt? Spend a day on the internet and you can find thousands of pictures of women, from prepubescents to granny ladies, nekkid as eggs, in positions that would make a gynecologist blush and sometimes doing things that would gag a goat. "Respectability" sounds so trite and corny, but it has advantages, among them a degree of social stability and personal comfort. I'm guessing, though I don't know, that Aly Raisman was raised in a stable home. Her mother put her in gymnastics when she was two years old, which bespeaks parental interest and encouragement, a decent family income (lessons ain't free), and considerable application on her part. She is to be admired for her accomplishments; we don't need to see her titties.

But nobody listens to me. I'm just an old crank.

Venezuela oil production is plummeting
[MONEY.CNN] Venezuela's main source of cash is dwindling at a breathtaking pace.
Obviously not doing socialism right.
The country's oil output in January fell to its lowest level in nearly 30 years, not including a brief oil strike in 2003, according to S&P Global Platts.

A monthly OPEC report published Monday revealed Venezuela pumped 1.6 million barrels of oil per day last month. Production in January was down 20% from a year ago.

The staggering decline is another sign of Venezuela's economic and political crisis. The country is heading toward a presidential election in April that international critics are already labeling fraudulent.

Venezuela has more crude oil than any other country in the world and it heavily depends on the commodity to power its economy. Crude oil makes up about 95% of Venezuela's exports. The country has no other source of foreign income.

Called an Arch (pronounced 'Ark'), this tiny storage device is built for long-term data archiving, holding libraries of information encoded on a small disc of quartz crystal, not much larger than a coin.

The Arch looks like a shrunk-down DVD or Blu-ray, but its potential for data storage goes way beyond any optical discs you have in your home.

The technology, developed by physicist Peter Kazansky from the University of Southampton in the UK, can theoretically hold up to 360 terabytes of data, about the same amount as 7,000 Blu-Ray discs.

But even more impressive than the data capacity is the physical longevity of the medium ‐ the first two discs, called Arch 1.1 and Arch 1.2, are said to be two of the longest-lasting storage objects ever created by humans, theoretically stable for up to 14 billion years, thanks to '5D data storage' inscribed by laser nanostructuring in quartz silica glass.
To infinity and beyond!

Day 5: Egypt army says killed 10 terrorists, arrested 400 as Operation Sinai 2018 continues
[AlAhram] Egyptian security forces killed 10 turbans in an exchange of fire and tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
400 suspects, including foreigners, as part of an ongoing anti-terrorism campaign focused on Sinai that was launched last week, the army said in a statement on Tuesday.

This was the sixth communiqué released by the Egyptian Armed Forces since Operation Sinai 2018 was launched on Friday morning.

The announcement brings to 39 the number of turbans the army said were killed over the past five days of its massive operation.

Egypt launched Operation Sinai 2018 on Friday, involving land, naval and air forces, as well as the police and border guards, targeting "terrorist and criminal elements and organizations" in northern and central Sinai, as well as parts of the Nile Delta and the Western Desert.

Police and army units have "eliminated an extremely dangerous terrorist cell consisting of 10 takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
s hiding in a house in the city of Arish after an exchange of fire with the raiding forces, and seized quantities of weapons, ammunition and bombs that were in their possession," the communiqué said.

Four hundred criminals and suspects, including foreigners, have been arrested, it added.

The communiqué said security forces destroyed vehicles, cycle of violences and dozens of hideouts and arms depots used by the terrorists. Dozens of bombs planted in several areas targeted by the turbans as well as an underground depot containing 10 anti-tank mines have also been destroyed, it added.

Border guards and military engineers uncovered and destroyed two tunnel openings believed to be used by holy warriors and 15 holes connected to trenches along the border area of the North Sinai governorate.

Forces involved in the operation also uncovered and destroyed nine farms used to grow illegal narcotics and seized tons of drugs, the communiqué said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch clutched at his shoulder. Ow! he exclaimed, with feeling......
naval units launched four land-to-sea and surface-to-sea missiles as they carried out a series of military exercises in the Mediterranean, while air forces and border guards continue to secure the country's western and southern borders.

Joint army and police forces have set up around 500 checkpoints and security patrols on main roads and desert areas nationwide as part of Operation Sinai 2018.

Over the past four years, Egypt has been battling a terror campaign, led by Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, based in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula that has carried out deadly attacks against security forces and civilians. The army said it has killed hundreds of suspected holy warriors in military operations.

A strange way to mummify: The mystery of Egypt's 'screaming mummy'
[Al Ahram] Although the Grand Egyptian Museum overlooking Giza Plateau will celebrate a soft opening in December, it is the Egyptian Museum which will remain one of Egypt’s archaeological icons.

To highlight some of its distinguished treasured collections, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir overlooking Giza Plateau is to exhibit at its foyer and on a weekly basis, three of its artefacts that were located in a hidden display area, repatriated from abroad and stored in the basement.

This week the mummy of Unknown Man E and a gilded cartonnage mask with a shroud are the selected objects going on special display.
Ummm...
We seen dis movie!

Elham Salah, head of the Museums Sector at the Ministry of Antiquities, said the gilded cartonnage mask with a shroud was repatriated from the United States in 2017. The shroud looks like a net with beads used since the 21st Dynasty as a mummy cover.

Meanwhile, Unknown Man E is wrapped in sheepskin with trimmed toe nails dyed with henna and an open mouth which makes the mummy look as though he had been poisoned. The mummy possibly belongs to Prince Pentewere, a son of the 20th Dynasty King Ramses III, who had been involved in a conspiracy against his father.
It ain't him! It's Imhotep! He's lookin' for his girlfriend and you're all gonna die!
“The gruesome mummy of Unknown Man E, also known as the ‘Screaming Mummy’, has long puzzled scholars,” renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass told Al-Ahram Weekly, adding that this particular mummy is surrounded in mystery. Although he was re-buried in the royal mummy cache of Deir Al-Bahari, he was not wrapped in the usual fine linen bandages like the rest of the mummies. Instead, he was wrapped in sheepskin, which was considered impure by the ancient Egyptians. His hands and feet were tied with leather thongs. He was not even mummified, but was merely left to dry in natron and then had some resin poured into his open mouth.
They put bugs in the coffin with him!
“Such unusual mummification has perplexed Egyptologists and no one has succeeded in knowing the story behind such a mummy until the launch of the Egyptian Mummy Project several years ago under my direction to create a complete database of forensic information related to the mummy collection at the Egyptian Museum,” Hawass said.

Britain
Former British Soldier Charged With Terrorism By England For Fighting Against ISIS
[Telegraph] A former British Army soldier who joined Kurdish forces to fight Islamic State group extremists is to be charged with terrorism offences in the first case of its kind.

James Matthews will appear in court to face a charge of attending a terrorist training camp, Scotland Yard said.

The 43-year-old had returned to Britain to attend the funeral last week of Jac Holmes, a fellow British volunteer fighting with the Kurds who was killed in Raqqa in late 2017.

Counter terrorism sources said the charges against Matthews were the first of their kind, but denied they heralded a change in policy towards those fighting against Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (Isil).

While there has been public sympathy for the ragtag band of volunteers who have joined the Kurdish YPG militia fighting Isil, the UK authorities say the battle-hardened volunteers may still be vulnerable to radicalisation and potentially pose a security risk.

Turkey also says the YPG is linked to the PKK separatist group which is proscribed n the UK.

Sources said returning volunteers were being investigated on a case-by-case basis. Several have been arrested and questioned on their return.

Matthews is believed to have served several years with the British Army in the 1990s and deployed to Bosnia. He joined the YPG in 2015 and has since served three tours with the militia group, specialising in clearing mines and booby-traps, Kurdish sources told the Telegraph.
No charges for the 400 who returned to England after fighting for ISIS.

India-Pakistan
More attacks in IHK
[DAWN] TWO attacks in India-held Kashmire have sent tensions in the region soaring and prompted an extraordinary verbal attack by Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, against Pakistain. Before Ms Sitharaman’s bellicose statement, the Pakistain Foreign Office had already issued a statement suggesting that India should not presumptively blame Pakistain for violence in IHK, as in the past such accusations have been created as an excuse for India to attack across the LoC and Working Boundary. The attack on an army camp in Jammu on Saturday and another on a Central Reserve Police Force camp in Srinagar yesterday have so ratcheted up tensions between the two countries that IHK Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, has been forced to speak out. Ms Mufti has said on Twitter, "Dialogue with Pakistain is necessary if we are to end bloodshed. I know I will be labelled anti-national by news anchors tonight but that doesn’t matter. The people of J&K are suffering. We have to talk because war is not an option."

Her words should be heeded by the Indian government. The strident response of Ms Sitharaman may satisfy anti-Pakistain hawks in India, but such sentiments can only pave the way to greater conflict, not less. The events of September 2016 should serve as a reminder of unrestrained rhetoric leading to unmanageable consequences. An attack on a military brigade headquarters in Uri that India blamed on Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. In 2002 the government of Pervez Musharraf banned the group, which changed its name to Khaddam ul-Islam and continued doing what it had been doing before without missing a beat...
led to a clamour for action against Pakistain. Less than two weeks later, the Modi government, which itself appeared to fan the flames of war, launched so-called surgical strikes across the LoC. While the details have been disputed by Pakistain, the propaganda unleashed by India dangerously increased the possibility of conflict between the two states. The claim of surgical strikes was clearly meant to placate the Indian public, which had been whipped up into a nationalist frenzy, but it also threatened a cycle of violence, propaganda and counter-propaganda that could have spun out of control.

Interventions by IHK politicians such as Ms Mufti may help calm tensions in the short term, but the chief minister’s advice squarely addresses the underlying problem. Dialogue is essential between India and Pakistain because in its absence, hardliners will hijack the discourse and push agendas of self-interest that could have disastrous consequences for the people of both countries. The past five years have proven that waiting for the right time to attempt dialogue is futile. Elections in one country or the other, change of governments and the ebb and flow of violence will always be an excuse to delay dialogue when neither side is sincere. But without dialogue, the threat of violence can only grow. The Indian and Pak states owe it to their people to find peaceful solutions to seemingly intractable disputes.

Malaysia further downgrading ties with N.Korea a year after airport assassination
[Al Ahram] One year after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's half-brother was assassinated at Kuala Lumpur's airport, Malaysia is further downgrading once-close ties with Pyongyang, sources familiar with the government's plans said.

Kim Jong Nam was assassinated on Feb. 13, 2017 when two women smeared his face with VX nerve agent - which the U.N. lists as a weapon of mass destruction. The women claim they were tricked into believing they were part of a reality show, but U.S. and South Korea say the murder was orchestrated by Pyongyang.

The brazen killing came as North Korea was starting to accelerate its missile tests and countries around the world came under mounting pressure to enforce ever-tightening U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang.

The repercussions from the killing are still being felt.

Malaysia is considering reducing the staff size of the North Korean mission in Kuala Lumpur to four by not renewing requests to replace diplomats when their terms end, according to a diplomatic source and an advisor to the government. Both declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Malaysia is also turning down invitations to participate in North Korean events. A diplomatic source with direct knowledge of the situation said Malaysia declined an invitation to send an envoy to attend last week's military parade in Pyongyang.

Department Of Education: We're Done Being Involved With Transgender Students And Bathrooms
[DAILYWIRE] The Department of Education has decided it will not investigate or interfere if transgender students complain they are barred from bathrooms that match their chosen gender, according to Buzzfeed News.

On Thursday, Buzzfeed asked Liz Hill, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, if restroom complaints from transgender students are not covered by a 1972 federal civil rights law called Title IX. Hill answered, "Yes, that’s what the law says," adding on Friday, "Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, not gender identity."

Hill made it clear that some complaints by transgender students will indeed be investigated, but bathroom complaints will not be among them. She stated, "Where students, including transgender students, are penalized or harassed for failing to conform to sex-based stereotypes, that is sex discrimination prohibited by Title IX. In the case of bathrooms, however, long-standing regulations provide that separating facilities on the basis of sex is not a form of discrimination prohibited by Title IX."

That’ll get anxiety in most of its forms, no doubt, including anorexia, bulimia, and possibly OCD and PTSD. Those with gender dysphoria as a rule have a number of the other expressions of anxiety as well, on top of depression. It is highly likely that any medication that acts on GD will be developed and tested for other anxiety problems — because the populations available for clinical testing are so much larger, the impact on GD only being realized when that tiny subpopulation gradually stops playing at being something they’re not. Much like it was finally noticed after many decades that severely depressed people who took scopolamine for motion sickness inexplicably stopped being depressed for weeks before reverting.

Trump donates his fourth quarter salary
[BIZPACREVIEW] White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders announced the president’s doling of the salary on Tuesday.

"Today, the president is proud to donate his fourth-quarter 2017 salary to the Department of Transportation to support their programs to rebuild and modernize our crumbling infrastructure," Sanders said at the press briefing.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao accepted the president’s salary, which symbolically represents the White House’s emphasis on infrastructure.

Also on Tuesday, it came out in Politico that former White House aide Omarosa’s firing may have been transportation-related. It was reported that she had been using the presidential car service known as CARPET as a personal limo service.
