Blas drops out of race. Trump mocks
Warren Wilhelm Jr. may actually have to do his day job. NYers incredulous with fear
[NY Post] President Trump wasted no time mocking Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday after Hizzoner announced he was ending his far-fetched bid for the presidency.

"Oh no, really big political news, perhaps the biggest story in years! Part time Mayor of New York City, @BilldeBlasio, who was polling at a solid ZERO but had tremendous room for growth, has shocking dropped out of the Presidential race," Trump tweeted Friday morning.

"NYC is devastated, he's coming home!"
I'm sure he'll remain the time-tardy dilettante waste of oxygen
De Blasio announced on "Morning Joe" that he was finally pulling the plug on his sputtering campaign after failing to garner more than 1 percent of support in national polls.

The mayor and the president notably traded barbs throughout de Blasio's White House bid.

UNC-Duke program too positive on Islam, Trump officials say
[IsraelTimes] The Trump administration is threatening to cut funding for a Middle East studies program run by the University of North Carolina and Duke University, arguing that it’s misusing a federal grant to advance "ideological priorities" and unfairly promote "the positive aspects of Islam" but not Christianity or Judaism.

An August 29 letter from the US Education Department ordered the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies to revise its offerings by September 22 or risk losing future funding from a federal grant that’s awarded to dozens of universities to support foreign language instruction. The consortium received $235,000 from the grant last year, according to Education Department data.

Officials at Duke and at UNC-Chapel Hill, which houses the consortium, declined to comment. The Education Department declined to say if it’s examining similar programs at other schools.

Academic freedom advocates say the government could be setting a dangerous precedent if it injects politics into funding decisions. Some said they had never heard of the Education Department asserting control over such minute details of a program’s offerings.

"Is the government now going to judge funding programs based on the opinions of instructors or the approach of each course?" says Henry Reichman, chairman of a committee on academic freedom for the American Association of University Professors. "The odor of right wing political correctness that comes through this definitely could have a chilling effect."

More than a dozen universities receive National Resource Center grants for their Middle East programs, including Columbia, Georgetown, Yale and the University of Texas. The Duke-UNC consortium was founded in 2005 and first received the grant nearly a decade ago.

Damn right it should. Even the employability of the academics as instructors and administrators should be judged from their ideological leanings.

A State is obligated to not only de-fund an institution that preaches against it, but to regulate curriculum to acceptable standards of liberality within the confines of morality and loyalty to the nation.

Israeli army raids offices of Palestinian prisoners NGO
[IsraelTimes] Israel’s army raided the offices of a prominent Paleostinian NGO early Thursday, its director says, in an operation Amnesia Amnesty International said aimed to "crush peaceful activism."

Israeli soldiers forced their way into the offices of prisoner support group Addameer in the West Bank city of Ramallah at around 2:00 a.m., the organization’s director Sahar Francis says.

No staff were in the office at that time, she adds, but Israeli forces seized thousands of dollars worth of equipment, including five computers.

"They searched the whole office," Francis says.

Addameer works to support Paleostinian prisoners in both Israeli and Paleostinian prisons.

Israeli right-wing activists accuse it of links to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine, considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the Europe
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
an Union.

The Israeli army did not immediately respond to request for comment on the raid.

Trump Administration Planning to ‘End Catch and Release at the Southwest Border'
[EpochTimes] President Donald Trump and a top immigration official said the administration is working on ending so-called "catch and release" at the southern border of the United States, with the goal of shutting it down by early October.

Mark Morgan, commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, told reporters late on Sept. 18 that the administration is "confident that in a couple of weeks we’re going to be able to end catch and release at the southwest border."

He said it will be possible through a "network of initiatives and policies by this administration that’s really been supported by several different entities within" the Department of Homeland Security, including his agency, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

"There will be no more catch and release. Nobody coming into the country ... And that’s without the Democrats," Trump told reporters.

"It would’ve been easier, we could’ve done it the other way, but because it won’t be done through legislation and what we’re doing from Mexico, we won’t have catch within two weeks, we’ll be free of catch and release, releasing people."

Morgan said a new interim final rule would be coming out following the Supreme Court blocking a nationwide injunction from a federal judge.

Another 2020 Democrat admits we need ABORTION to combat overpopulation [VIDEO]
[Right Scoop] 2020 Democrat Tim Ryan
Who?
was asked today if he thinks overpopulation contributes to ’global warming’ and if we should be doing anything to combat it.

Tim Ryan literally says the United States should be involved in ’family planning’ efforts around the world to combat overpopulation, suggesting this is about resources. Wow. In other words, Ryan believes we need to use abortion as a tool all over the world to keep the population down, because CLIMATE CHANGE. Good grief.

This is very similar to what Bernie Sanders said just a few weeks ago, when he also starting pushing for more international abortions in poor areas to combat overpopulation.

Seriously, how are these Democrats any different from the Chinese who have used forced abortions for decades to control their population? Only in tactics.

Arranmore Island harnessing technology to help the elderly population
[Irish Times] Situated 5km off the coast of Donegal on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Arranmore Island has a rugged, unspoiled beauty that blends with its remote location. It’s an outlier both geographically and demographically; the island has a population of just 469 people, many of whom are elderly.

Yet residents and visitors alike can avail of new services like telemedicine from Arranmore’s General Practice thanks to improved broadband connectivity, while IoT technology is helping to deliver innovations in home care too. Arranmore island’s GP Dr Kevin Quinn explains more.

In some of the more remote parts of Ireland, ready access to hospitals and medical practitioners is not always a given. And as people are living longer, in greater numbers, this presents challenges for healthcare providers. This all adds up to a unique set of circumstances on the island of Arranmore, 5km off the coast of Donegal.

Dr Kevin Quinn has been the GP on the island for 35 years and together with support staff, a public health nurse and community nurse, his practice has seven surgeries a week. During the summertime, there’s an influx of tourists and students to the island’s Irish college. But for the entire year, the doctor and his staff spend most of their time taking care of Arranmore’s native population, many of whom are elderly.

Monster V8 engine to debut in Ford 2020 pickups in fall
[Detroit Free Press] Ford’s biggest trucks will get one of the world's biggest V8 engines starting this fall, as one aspect of the Truck Wars turns into an old-fashioned battle of engine size that's reminiscent of the muscle car era.

Exhibit A: A 7.3L gasoline-powered V8 coming to Ford’s Super Duty pickups and commercial vehicles, from ambulances and utility bucket trucks to just a step shy of massive highway semitrucks.

Most of the conversation about big trucks like these ‐ they’re officially called Class 2 through Class 7 vehicles, based on the massive weights they can haul and tow ‐ focuses on diesel engines. But gasoline engines play a role, too, accounting for up to 40% of sales of big Class 2-4 pickups like Ford’s F-250, 350 and 450 Super Duty trucks.

"Diesels are incredibly important for those trucks, but many customers don’t need their full towing capacity," IHS Markit senior analyst Stephanie Brinley said. "Those customers can get everything they need at a lower cost with a gasoline engine."

In addition to that, many fleet customers only keep trucks this size for three or four years, so diesel’s long-term, high-mileage durability isn’t worth those engines’ higher cost.

The new V8 produces 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque in Super Duty pickups, slightly less in some of Ford's other commercial trucks.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Cape fearless: SA surfer rides emotional rollercoaster to Olympics
[Israel News.net] Cape Town - Bianca Buitendag is one of those surfers who exudes zen-like calm and looks at one with the ocean, but qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics has left the South African completely "overwhelmed".

The graceful 25-year-old booked a provisional spot for next year's Olympics at the World Surfing Games in Miyazaki at the weekend, an emotional release after a difficult few years.

"It's going to take a while to really understand the magnitude of the opportunity," Buitendag told AFP in an interview.

"It's a bit overwhelming really, the whole idea of being in the Olympics," she added.

"It's so bizarre. We grew up watching it on TV. My family don't understand any result I have - but the Olympics is a universal word that everyone understands, so they understood that."

When surfing makes its first Olympic appearance at Tokyo 2020 Buitendag will not be short of support.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance," she said.

"My family have already decided they're going to fly over so I've got to cater for about 20 people - my mum is a big sports fan, she probably won't even watch the surfing, she'll just head to the track."

Buitendag's road to the Olympics is all the more remarkable after enduring a rollercoaster of emotions since 2015 when her surfer dad Colin passed away but she battled to a career-best fourth in the world rankings after runner-up finishes in Rio, Fiji and California.

She has struggled to replicate that form since, but Buitendag is daring to dream after claiming a continental berth for Tokyo 2020 alongside Japan's Shino Matsuda, Israeli Anat Lelior and Ella Williams of New Zealand.

"I just have no idea of what to expect," she said of the prospect of marching behind her country's flag at the opening ceremony.

"I'm doing my best to kind of formulate an idea in my head, but I know it's not going to come close to when it actually happens, my dear," added Buitendag.

"If you knew how special my country is to me, from what circumstance we've come and what realities we represent you'll start to understand how proud I'll be walking out there. I think I'll be in pieces."

Bootleggers and Catholics: The Politics of the Open-Borders Lobby
[LewRockwell.com] Economist Bruce Yandle is known for (among many other things) authoring the "Bootleggers and Baptists" theory of government regulation. The gist of the theory is that many forms of regulation (and other types of government intervention) persist because of the political clout of one group ‐ the "bootleggers"‐that is only interested in money, and another group ‐ the "Baptists" ‐ that has some religious or ideological interest in a particular form of government intervention. The bootlegger and Baptist language comes from his analysis of alcohol prohibition, where bootleggers supported it because it made the competition ‐ legal alcohol merchants ‐ illegal, whereas "Baptists" is symbolic language for those who supported prohibition for religious reasons.

In her new book, Open Borders Inc., Michelle Malkin documents chapter and verse of what has to be one of the biggest Bootleggers-and-Baptist operations ever ‐ the coalition of large corporations like Koch Industries and Apple Computer, along with arms of the Catholic Church, that seeks to abolish national sovereignty in the United States with open borders. The corporate interest is mainly in cheap labor, says Malkin, whereas the rhetoric of the Catholic Church is about compassion for "refugees."

There is a twist here in Professor Yandle’s theory, however, a twist that probably also exists in many of his other examples. The twist is that although the rhetoric of the Catholic Church is about compassion for the poor, it is not just coincidental that it rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars a year in government grants to administer its "refugee resettlement" and other illegal immigrant programs. The Church also views mass immigration from largely Catholic Latin America a solution to the catastrophic drop off in Sunday offerings (it lost some three million American Catholics between 2007 and 2015) in light of how it has handled its pedophile scandal. "Follow the money" is the main theme of Open Borders, Inc.

#1  Spot on. Virtue signaling CEOs are in on the game now.

They get cheap labor, the Chirch gets millions of docile, compliant new parishioners, and the Democrats get a lock on the border-state Latino vote. Win-win-win... and the US loses.

Steve Jobs' widow is spending her hubby's fortune on scholarships for illegals' kids, among other virtue-signaling beaux gestes. (Funny: her sociopath husband was notorious for thumbing his nose at the employment laws, colliding with other tech CEOs to try to prevent a talent market from developing, abusing the laws re H1Bs and re contractors, rampant age discrimination etc etc.)

Behind all the BS is rank opportunism. It's basically a modern version of the papal indulgences of the middle ages.

The Catholic Church hierarchy gets to distract the faithful and the media from their RICO-style international conspiracy to aid and abet pedophiles and shield them from the law.

Cynical CEOs and shit-wage small employers get a steady supply of cheap labor - and their SJW posture keeps boycotters off their backs, journalists off the scent and legislators and regulators distracted from their abuse of employment laws.

Chinese scientists develop handheld sonic weapon for crowd control
[South China Morning Post] China has developed the world’s first portable sonic gun for riot control, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said.

The rifle-shaped instrument, which was jointly developed with military and law enforcement, is designed to disperse crowds using focused waves of low frequency sound, the academy's Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry website said on Wednesday.

The device’s "biological effect" would cause extreme discomfort, with vibrations in the eardrums, eyeballs, stomach, liver, and brain, scientists said.

Studies dating to the 1940s found that low frequency sound energy could, depending upon intensity and exposure, cause dizziness, headaches, vomiting, bowel spasms, involuntary defecation, organ damage and heart attacks.

This weekend, my wife and I purchased Boy Scout popcorn outside a local Safeway. We were glad to contribute to a tradition in both our families: I had sold the popcorn, and so had her older brother. The money helps finance camping trips and other outdoor activities meant to build boys into men. The Boy Scouts of America has a very noble goal and I am proud to count myself an Eagle Scout, but in some ways the organization is already dead. The death of the name is already official.

Last year, the Boy Scouts of America opened its doors to girls and rebranded as Scouts BSA. This change was overdue, as the organization had already accepted girls ‐ who identify as transgender boys ‐ into the program. In an astounding move, the Boy Scouts of America surrendered its victory in a Supreme Court case. The Scouts had long fought against LGBT activists who demanded it open its ranks to openly homosexual boys and leaders. Despite winning the right to restrict its membership, the organization voluntarily surrendered to the LGBT movement.

It seems Scouts BSA may go bankrupt under the weight of more than 250 former members suing the Scouts, alleging inappropriate conduct by leaders and volunteers going back to the 1960s. The horrific crime of sexual abuse undercut the very purpose of the Boy Scouts of America ‐ to train boys into men, strong to live in the outdoors and prepared for the world ahead of them. Boys abused in scouting received psychological damage rather than character building.

The Boy Scouts Is Going Bankrupt, But It's Not for the Reason You Think

Finally, American culture has grown increasingly hostile to the mission of raising boys into men. Concerns about "toxic masculinity" have grown into an assault on masculinity itself, with the American Psychological Association demonizing traditional masculinity. Parents and teachers are scared to suggest boys and men might be different from girls and women, even though the differences are undeniable. Men and women are equal in worth and dignity, but males and females develop differently, and raising boys into men is a unique challenge.

As an Eagle Scout, it pains me to see an organization I truly believed in laid low in these ways. I firmly believe that the Boy Scouts of America was founded for a noble purpose, and that purpose remains extremely relevant today. In fact, the scandals that may have condemned the Boy Scouts only illustrate the deep need for a similar organization.

As Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS), explained on his podcast "The Briefing," the scouting movement emerged in Great Britain and in the United States at the end of the 19th century in response to cultural shifts, like men and boys living in cities and working in factories and offices rather than in fields. "There were grave concerns by the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries that boys and men in the United States were less masculin, that there was a boy crisis in particular."

#1  The founder of the Boy Scouts had seen the consequences of losing 'natural fieldcraft' by Englishmen in the Boer War and set about to do something about it. Those that war (by any means necessary) against those skills and principles will find themselves hard pressed by the real war they're bringing upon all of us.

#2  Sad end. Too easy a target. Even being sued by the Girl Scouts. I have said before that boys would be better off on their own than vilified by these losers. I enjoyed both worlds. Scouts and freedom to explore. I had many projects and adventures. Because of public school I learned not to expect any support. That included sports. I was always active but never trained. The blacks got all the attention. So oblivious to such bias I was unaffected. What interested me was when I would do better that caused a great deal of anger among the blacks.

State sending troopers to help fight St. Louis crime
ST. LOUIS (AP) ‐ Missouri Gov. Mike Parson is sending highway patrol troopers and other state workers to St. Louis as part of an effort to fight the surge of violent crime that has included the killings of more than a dozen children in the region so far this year.
Feral Youts hardest hit
The Republican governor on Thursday announced an action plan that takes effect Oct. 1. Parson said the total cost of the state’s commitment, including the 25 state employees who will work in the St. Louis region, is up to $4 million.

"This is about targeting violent criminals and getting them off the street," Parson said at a news conference in St. Louis.

Troopers will patrol interstate highways and assist with U.S. Marshals Service and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that focus on violent criminals. The state is also providing investigators to help with federal crime cases and social workers to assist crime victims. Parson said his plan also includes $2 million in state funds for services to help crime victims.

The plan does not include any change in gun laws, something St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson and other Democrats have called for. Parson said it would be up to the Missouri Legislature to change gun laws but reiterated his staunch support for citizens’ gun rights.

#4  First they decided to "Professionalize" the police by requiring them to have college degrees. Pause for a second and ask why, why a diploma would make you any more qualified to be policeman than someone that passed Boot Camp in the Army, Navy or Marines? Result too few officers to "police", instead they "patrol" in their cars and only respond to crime like firemen respond to house fires -- after the damage is done.

Then they decided to hire by Profiling, destroying any advantage the "credentials of college" might have given. Nepotism is bad, but hiring by "ethnic quota" is an insidious rot.

Then the icing on the cake: ROE. The politicians demand the impossible so the few policemen still trying just give up...

Upbeat data suggest U.S. economy still on moderate growth path
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing applications for unemployment benefits increased less than expected last week, pointing to strong labor market conditions that should continue to support an economy growing at a moderate pace.

The steady economic growth pace was also underscored by other data on Thursday showing home resales rising in August to a 17-month high. While factory activity in the mid-Atlantic region slowed in September, orders remained solid, leading manufacturers in the region to increase employment and boost hours for workers.

The reports suggested that housing and manufacturing, the two weak spots in the economy, were stabilizing. The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by another 25 basis points on Wednesday, citing risks to the longest economic expansion in history from a year-long U.S.-China trade war and slowing economic growth overseas.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said he expected the economy, now in its 11th year of expansion, to continue to "expand at a moderate rate," but noted trade tensions were "weighing on U.S. investment and exports.

CA Senate Passes Resolution Telling Pastors to Embrace LGBTQ Beliefs
[CBN] California Senate passed a resolution telling Christian clergy to accept and support LGBTQ ideology, even if doing so violates their Christian beliefs.

Assembly Concurrent Resolution 99 (ACR-99) was introduced by Democratic state Assemblyman Evan Low of San Jose on June 4 as a way to gather support for LGBTQ identity and behaviors.

CBN News previously reported that more than two dozen doctors, counselors, former homosexuals, and other Christian leaders signed a letter condemning the resolution, which they said violates religious freedom.

Seattle Brings 'Jesus' To Make Their Green New Deal A Reality Or Something
[The Stranger] The Seattle City Council unanimously passed legislation that would establish a Green New Deal Oversight Board.

Establishing the board is a crucial step in making the Seattle Green New Deal (GND), a resolution the council passed in August, a reality.

The board will lay out how to follow and implement a GND, which is an extensive list of environmentally conscious goals. The board will advise all city departments and make sure that they are following the tenets of the GND and the overarching goal of reducing the city's greenhouse gas emissions and, ultimately, eliminating climate pollution by 2030.

A point of discussion among the city council was how many people and who would make up the board.

The board as it stands, including a new amendment proposed by Council Member Lisa Herbold to add two more labor representatives, will be made up of 19 people. There will be 11 representatives of environmental justice organizations and communities impacted directly by climate change. Additionally, "three people with professional backgrounds in climate pollution reduction strategies, two labor union representatives, and a workforce development specialist," according to 350 Seattle, one of the groups responsible for putting forward the GND proposal.

Council Member Abel Pacheco proposed an informal amendment to add four more positions that would give "philanthropy and tech" seats on the board. It was received poorly.

Pete Buttigieg: Here's a better way to do Medicare-for-all
[WAPO] Pete Buttigieg is mayor of South Bend, Ind., and is a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.
BINASH
Earlier this year, I lost my father to cancer. I make decisions for a living, but nothing could have prepared me for the kind of decisions our family faced as his illness grew more serious. But as challenging as that time was for my family, one thing we did not have to worry about was whether his illness would bankrupt our family. Because he was covered by Medicare, we were free to focus on what mattered most.

I want every family to have that same freedom. But as anyone who has ever visited a doctor knows, health care in the United States remains too expensive, too complicated and too frustrating. The system seems almost designed to leave us feeling powerless and confused.

As president, I will put Americans in charge of their own health care with affordable choices for all. I’ll ensure that every American has access to affordable coverage either through private insurance or a public alternative. If a private insurance plan through your employer or the marketplace isn’t affordable, you can get a plan that is. It’s what I call "Medicare for All Who Want It."

Many Democrats have proposed a Medicare-for-all plan, and while each of us would achieve universal coverage, there’s a real difference between the plan I’m announcing on Thursday and the ones offered by candidates such as Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.). Rather than flipping a switch and kicking almost 160 million Americans off their private insurance, including 20 million seniors already choosing private plans within Medicare, my plan lets Americans keep a private plan if they want to. If private insurers are unable or unwilling to offer better plans than they do today, competition from this public alternative will naturally lead to Medicare-for-all.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
For the sake of life on Earth, we must put a limit on wealth
[Guardian] It is not quite true that behind every great fortune lies a great crime. Musicians and novelists, for example, can become extremely rich by giving other people pleasure. But it does appear to be universally true that in front of every great fortune lies a great crime. Immense wealth translates automatically into immense environmental impacts, regardless of the intentions of those who possess it. The very wealthy, almost as a matter of definition, are committing ecocide.

A few weeks ago, I received a letter from a worker at a British private airport. "I see things that really shouldn’t be happening in 2019," he wrote. Every day he sees Global 7000 jets, Gulfstream G650s and even Boeing 737s take off from the airport carrying a single passenger, mostly flying to Russia and the US. The private Boeing 737s, built to take 174 passengers, are filled at the airport with around 25,000 litres of fuel. That’s as much fossil energy as a small African town might use in a year.

Where are these single passengers going? Perhaps to visit one of their superhomes, constructed and run at vast environmental cost, or to take a trip on their superyacht, which might burn 500 litres of diesel an hour just ticking over, and which is built and furnished with rare materials extracted at the expense of beautiful places.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised to learn that when Google convened a meeting of the rich and famous at the Verdura resort in Sicily in July to discuss climate breakdown, its delegates arrived in 114 private jets and a fleet of megayachts, and drove around the island in supercars. Even when they mean well, the ultrarich cannot help trashing the living world.

[Guardian] As they set national policy on important issues such as climate change, tech monopolies, medical debt and income inequality, US senators have glaring conflicts of interest, an investigation by news website Sludge and the Guardian can reveal.

An analysis of personal financial disclosure data as of 16 August has found that 51 senators and their spouses have as much as $96m personally invested in corporate stocks in five key sectors: communications/electronics; defense; energy and natural resources; finance, insurance and real estate; and health.

The majority of these stocks come from public companies, and some are private.

Overall, the senators are invested in 338 companies ‐ including tech firms such as Apple and Microsoft, oil and gas giants including ExxonMobil and Antero Midstream, telecom companies including Verizon, and major defense contractors such as Boeing ‐ in the five sectors as categorized by Sludge.

#7  Crony capitalists such as Warren Buffet make out quite well, too. Quite well.

His dad was a congress-critter. Junior learned early on how important government regulation can be for a company's competitive position.

His concept of a "moat" was almost always applied to companies that benefited from near-monopoly status, or favorable regulatory treatment: insurance companies and local newspapers were early favorites, including the Government Employees Insurance Company. His recent wins came from arbitraging the government bailout of Wall Street.

But his biggest scam of all has been to use Congress's favorable tax treatment of debt to borrow against his holding companies and thereby juice up his equity returns.

The man who rails against hedge funds is himself running a gigantic hedge fund. According to academics who've studied his returns, about 60% of his fund's performance can be attributed to financial leverage.

And he's our folk hero investor. We are living through the most corrupt period in over 100 years.

Yang: Climate Change May Require Elimination of Car Ownership
[Free Beacon] Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang said the United States may have to eliminate private car ownership to combat climate change during MSNBC's climate forum at Georgetown University Thursday morning.

He told MSNBC host Ali Velshi that "we might not own our own cars" by 2050 to wean the United States economy off of fossil fuels, describing private car ownership as "really inefficient and bad for the environment." Privately owned cars would be replaced by a "constant roving fleet of electric cars."

A video posted by the GOP War Room shows Velshi asking Yang what measures he sees the world taking to fight climate change by 2050.

"You have this ability to envision the future, right, with your proposals on universal basic income. You've played the whole chess game out and you see what it looks like on the other end. Play the chess game out on climate change," Velshi said. "What does the world look like to you in 2050? What physically do you think we will do differently than we do today that will result in us fighting climate change?"

"Well I mentioned before that we might not own our own cars. Our current car ownership and usage model is really inefficient and bad for the environment," Yang said.

"You guys all probably agree with this because you're quite young," he told the Georgetown University crowd, adding an anecdote about driving a 1985 Honda Accord as a young man.

Yang then proposed an alternative to individuals owning their own cars.

Desperate Dems turning to fatally flawed Warren
[American Thinker] Okay, so Joe Biden is proving such an embarrassment that he can't be trusted to remain plausibly coherent for the 14 long months until the election. And Kamala Harris, the Great Intersectional Hope, is so transparently phony that voters are abandoning her. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders is no longer the anti-Hillary alternative that he was in 2016, and his cranky persona is wearing thin.

So what's a member of the Democrats' gentry ‐ the educated professional classes ‐ to do? Steven Hayward of Powerline, an astute observer, thinks Elizabeth Warren is the next candidate who will take the lead.

The walls finally may be closing in on Ilhan Omar
[American Thinker] There is ample reason to suspect that Rep. Ilhan Omar has committed multiple frauds. Scott Johnson of Powerline, a retired attorney, has been covering the freshman House member ever since her run for the Minnesota state Legislature, and has been among the most active investigators of suspicions that she committed immigration fraud by legally marrying her brother in order to get him into the United States. Yesterday, he wrote about the genesis of his suspicions:
A few days after I started writing about Ilhan Omar on Power Line in August 2016 ‐ after she had won the primary for the DFL state legislative endorsement ‐ I was contacted by a source who agreed to discuss his knowledge of Omar's family with me. At our meeting he told me that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi ‐ Omar's legal husband, so to speak, as of that date ‐ was Omar's brother and that she had married him for fraudulent purposes.
And Omar herself entered the United States under an assumed identity:
My source told me that Omar and another member or two of the Elmi family had entered the United States as fraudulent members of the Omar family. That would go some way to explain why Omar lacks any acknowledged relative with the name Omar.

Now a tweet that she deleted two days ago is providing corroboration for those suspicions. Shaikh Tawhidi, the Imam of Peace, called attention to the deletion:

Britain
Brexit Boost as Leave-backing Billionaire to Build New 4×4 at UK Plant
[Breitbart] British manufacturing has received a boost as Brexit-backing billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe confirmed his brand new 4×4 will be built at a plant in Wales.

Sir Jim, a joiner’s son who grew up in a council house but now leads INEOS ‐ Britain’s biggest private company ‐ is best known as a petrochemicals tycoon, but expressed a desire to get into the carmaking business after Jaguar Land Rover announced it would be ceasing production of its iconic Defender due to European Union emissions regulations.

Jaguar Land Rover opted to take advantage of the EU’s free movement regime to build its new version of the Defender in low-wage Slovakia, with the move out of Britain assisted by £110 million in state aid from the Slovakian government which the EU approved ‐ much to the chagrin of British taxpayers, who transfer significant sums of money to Slovakia through their loss-making contributions to the EU budget each year.

Sir Jim’s new Grenadier 4×4 was mooted as something of a tribute to the Defender, with his INEOS Automotive subsidiary now developing a new production site at Bridgend, Wales, for a planned launch in 2021.

US-sanctioned Lebanese bank tied to Hezbollah self-liquidates
[IsraelTimes] Leb’s Central Bank announces it had agreed to the self-liquidation request it received from a bank hit by US sanctions last month over ties with Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah.

"Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh announced today he approved the request made by Jammal Trust Bank SAL," the Lebanese state-run National News Agency reports.

On August 29, Washington slapped heavy financial sanctions on JTB, which was accused of acting as a key financial institution for Hezbollah.

The US Treasury said the bank was used for enabling several of the Shiite holy warrior group’s financial activities, "including sending payments to families of jacket wallahs."

The news agency quotes Salameh as stressing that the value of the bank’s assets and of its contribution to the national deposit guarantee body were sufficient "in principle" to pay back all deposits and fulfill obligations.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has been a US-designated terrorist group since 1997 and fights alongside the regime of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

in the neighboring country’s civil war.

It is Tehran’s most potent proxy on the regional scene and also wields significant influence in Lebanese politics.

One of a handful of Shiite-owned Lebanese banks, JTB had specialized in micro-credit in remote areas of the country’s Shiite-majority south, which is also Hezbollah’s heartland.

Home Front: WoT
NJ man charged with scouting landmarks for Hezbollah, trying to kill Israeli spy
[IsraelTimes] Alexei Saab allegedly recorded video of US sites including Statue of Liberty, White House and Boston’s Fenway Park as potential terrorism targets in the early 2000s.

A New Jersey man who allegedly photographed or recorded video of landmarks including the Statue of Liberty, the White House and Boston’s Fenway Park as potential terrorism targets in the early to mid-2000s has been charged with terror offenses by authorities who say he was working on behalf of Hezbollah’s Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
Organization.

Alexei Saab, 42, of Morristown, was arrested July 9 after being questioned during 11 separate sessions with FBI agents since the spring. Besides terror charges in a nine-count indictment returned Thursday, he was also charged with marriage fraud. A message for comment was left with Saab’s attorney.

During interviews, Saab told agents he took photographs of buildings and locations including Quincy Market and the Prudential Center in Boston and the Capitol Building, Congress and the White House in Washington, D.C., according to a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan federal court. A video of Fenway Park that authorities say was recovered from one of Saab’s electronic devices was included in the complaint.

Authorities say Saab took surveillance at dozens of locations in New York City, including the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Empire State Building and airports, tunnels and bridges and provided information on those locations to the Islamic Jihad Organization (IJO, distinct from the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad).

Besides surveillance activities in the United States, authorities said he also operated abroad, including trying to murder a man he later understood to be a suspected Israeli spy and gathering intelligence for Hezbollah in Istanbul, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
. The complaint said he pointed a weapon at the individual at close range and pulled the trigger twice, but the firearm did not fire.

Authorities said Saab joined Hezbollah in 1996 and attended training in 1999, where he learned about firearms, including how to handle military assault rifles and grenades. In 2004 and 2005, he was trained in explosives in Leb, they said.

Saab entered the US legally in November 2000 and became a citizen in 2008.

Saab was charged with marriage fraud for allegedly marrying a co-conspirator in 2012 under false pretenses.

"As a member of the Hizballah component that coordinates external terrorist attack planning, Alexei Saab allegedly used his training to scout possible targets throughout the U.S. Even though Saab was a naturalized American citizen, his true allegiance was to Hizballah, the terrorist organization responsible for decades of terrorist attacks that have killed hundreds, including U.S. citizens and military personnel," U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a release. Hizballah is an alternate spelling for Hezbollah.

William F. Sweeney Jr., head of New York’s FBI office, said the charges against Saab highlight "the persistent efforts of a sophisticated international terrorist organization to scout targets at home and abroad, identifying vulnerabilities, and gathering essential details useful for a future attack."

He said what law enforcement authorities can do to prevent terrorism has its limits.

"We cannot do this work alone. I would like to thank the countless private security professionals who protect many of these sites, remind them to remain vigilant in order to make the enemy’s job more difficult, and I would ask the general public to continue to report suspicious activity to law enforcement like you have so many times in the past," Sweeney said.

Charges lodged against Saab include providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, conspiracy, receiving military-type training from a foreign terrorist organization, unlawful procurement of citizenship to facilitate international terrorism and citizenship application fraud. The most serious charge carries a maximum potential penalty of 25 years in prison, though the charges collectively carry potential penalties of over 100 years in prison.
Update from Hot Air at 12:55 p.m. EDT, quoting the Justice Department on the subject:
In 2000, Saab transitioned to membership in Hizballah’s unit responsible for external operations, the IJO, and he then received extensive training in IJO tradecraft, weapons, and military tactics, including how to construct bombs and other explosive devices.

The feds claim that Saab applied for naturalized citizenship in the U.S. in 2005 in order to facilitate his real mission, which was scouting American landmarks for security and structural weaknesses he could transmit back to Hezbollah:

In 2005, Saab applied for naturalized citizenship and falsely affirmed, under penalty of perjury, that he had never been “a member of or in any way associated with . . . a terrorist organization.” In August 2008, Saab became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

While living in the United States, Saab remained an IJO operative, continued to receive military training in Lebanon, and conducted numerous operations for the IJO. For example, Saab surveilled dozens of locations in New York City—including the United Nations headquarters, the Statue of Liberty, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Empire State Building, and local airports, tunnels, and bridges—and provided detailed information on these locations, including photographs, to the IJO. In particular, Saab focused on the structural weaknesses of locations he surveilled in order to determine how a future attack could cause the most destruction. Saab’s reporting to the IJO included the materials used to construct a particular target, how close in proximity one could get to a target, and site weaknesses or “soft spots” that the IJO could exploit if it attacked a target in the future. Saab conducted similar intelligence gathering in a variety of American cities.

Update from An Nahar at 3:45 p.m. EDT:
Saab faces nine indictments, including a charge related to supporting a terrorist organization, for which he could face 20 years in prison if convicted.

Saab could face 25 years in prison if convicted of offenses related to the fraudulent marriage charges.

In May, another American of Lebanese origin, Ali Kourani, was found guilty of supporting Hizbullah attacks and collecting information about the security operations of US airports, including John F. Kennedy in New York.

His sentencing is set for later this month.

#8  Some people can be coerced by the threat of military strikes and some can't.
Bombing to Win: Air Power and Coercion in War(1986) by Robert Pape argued that once coercion loses most of its effect when the bombs fall because the other side thinks "So what more can you do to me?"

But more importantly: some regimes just can't be seen to back down. Losing a war usually causes the ruling faction to be replaced. In many nations they do this more or less gracefully because they know that in a decade or so they will be back on top again. In some regimes feel that there is no tomorrow and they have every incentive to fight to the last.

Can the Ayatollahs be coerced, and if so to what extent?

Caribbean-Latin America
Pompeo expels two Cuban diplomats for conducting 'influence operations'
[Washington Examiner] Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has ordered two people stationed in New York at Cuba’s mission to the United Nations to leave the country.

"This is due to their attempts to conduct influence operations against the United States," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said Thursday.

The announcement came just days before world leaders descend on New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly. Foreign officials detailed to the United Nations generally have the right to work in New York under the agreement that established the international institution’s headquarters in the U.S., but Ortagus faulted the two Cubans for "abusing their privileges of residence," triggering the exception that allows diplomats to be kicked out.

"In addition to the required departures, travel within the U.S. by all members of Cuba’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations will now essentially be restricted to the island of Manhattan," Ortagus said.

The U.S. and Cuba have had an adversarial relationship dating back to Communist dictator Fidel Castro’s rise to power in 1959, the ensuing U.S. economic embargo of the regime, and the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. President Barack Obama moved to restore diplomatic relations with the regime in 2014, but the fragile relationship cratered again after a series of mysterious attacks in 2017 that left more than two dozen Americans and Canadians stationed in Havana with various brain injuries. The attacks prompted the expulsion of 15 Cuban diplomats from the U.S., as well as a reduction of the American presence in Havana.

Pompeo regards Cuban security services as the chief reason Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro has been able to resist international pressure to relinquish power to Juan Guaidó, the opposition lawmaker Trump and other world leaders have acknowledged as the legitimate interim president of the country. U.S. intelligence officials under Obama and Trump have identified Cuba repeatedly as one of the top spy threats against the U.S. along with China, Russia, and Iran.

"We take any and all attempts against the National Security of the United States seriously, and will continue to investigate any additional personnel who may be manipulating their privileges of residence," Ortagus said.

, according to a Sada-e Azadi report.

The detained teenage murderous Moslem has also confessed that they were also cooperating with Talibs in planting improvised bombs, spying and providing logistics support to the group.

Reacting to the report, the 209th Shaheen Corps said in a statement that the recruitment of young men and subjecting them to sexual abuse by Talibs is not a new practice.

The statement further added that the Talibs recruit young men into their ranks by taking advantage of the ignorance of the young men or coercing them.

Furthermore, the 209th Shaheen Corps said thousands of documents exist which confirm that the Talibs recruit, sexually abuse and coerce young men to conduct terrorist related activities.

US State Dept: Funds Withheld Because of Corruption
[ToloNews] US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released a statement on Thursday with some teeth.

The opening line reads: "Afghan government institutions and leaders must be transparent and accountable to the Afghan people. We stand against those who exploit their positions of power and influence to deprive the Afghan people of the benefits of foreign assistance."

Then Pompeo goes on to say that the US will be withdrawing $100 million from a planned infrastructure program, withholding $60 million in planned assistance funds, and by the end of the calendar year the US will no longer pay for Afghanistan’s Monitoring and Evaluation Committee.

Pompeo is direct about his reasons: "Due to identified Afghan government corruption and financial mismanagement, the US government is returning approximately $100 million to the US Treasury that was intended for a large energy infrastructure project," which involved "transmission infrastructure" between Ghazni and Kandahar and Kajaki and Kandahar.

Significantly, Pompeo says the US will fulfill its commitment to the project, but it will have to use an "off-budget" mechanism, given "the Afghan government’s inability to transparently manage US Government resources."

The withholding of $60 million is due to a "lack of transparency surrounding procurement decisions" by the National Procurement Authority, which is "a great cause for concern." This may not come as surprise to many Afghans, who, in the midst of a nationwide power outage, read US Ambassador John Bass’ September 18 tweet (which was reported on by Afghan media) :

"Hearing reports the National Procurement Authority won’t authorize fuel purchases for the power plant providing the only electricity in Kabul‐even while the US & Resolute Support [US/NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
military mission] help Afghan cops enable repairs to transmission lines. Could this be true?"

Then, The Monitoring and Evaluation Committee lost its funding because it is "incapable of being a partner in the international effort to build a better future for the Afghan people."

And a final pledge: "The American taxpayers and the Afghan people can count on the United States to act when we see assistance funds misused."

#1  A lot of people have already got rich from American largesse without oversight since the Obama years. Good move to reduce involvement in Afghanistan, forcing them to man up and clean their own house.

Most of the pro-democracy contenders in Afghanistan are not the virtuous altruists fighting for a State free from the taliban, or against islamic madness. For them 'self-determination' and 'democracy' are just the jargon of a proposed paradise of corrupt bureaucracy and sycophancy to the highest bidder, against the interests of the common citizen, who shall continue to be screwed.

These are people who wish to become a lot like the Indian state, ravagers of their own land. They plan to build a state where they can legally exploit the masses - pimping out their own people to mega-corporations, living off the exchequer and tying up generations of Afghans in a bureaucratic net of servitude. They'll gladly sell out to the Chinese if America ever does stabilize them. They'll send a prize asshole to the UN table and pretend to be a nation, while the common man in Afghanistan will imagine his new democratic state mostly in his own mind.

joined the alliance aimed at protecting maritime interests amid heightened tensions with Iran.

The UAE said on Thursday that it would join the coalition, officially named the International Maritime Security Construct, to guarantee the security of oil shipments in the region in order to maintain the global economy.

"UAE will be part of the US-led coalition to protect the navigation of oil shipments," said Salim al-Zuubi, the Director of the Security Cooperation Department at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement. "UAE and the coalition both aim to provide protection for the oil movement in the region in order to sustain the global economy."

Iraq will not join US-led Gulf navigation coalition after call with Iranian foreign minister

[Rudaw] The Iraqi foreign ministry front man says Iraq will not join any coalition to protect the Gulf navigation on Thursday.

The US is currently trying to get regional states to join the International Maritime Security Construct, which it formed in August following heightened tensions with Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan, the abbreviation IRGC is a cognate form of Stürmabteilung (or SA), the term Supreme Guide is a cognate form of either Shah or Führer or maybe both, and they hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
in the Persian Gulf. The front man Ahmed Sahaaf said that Iraq has no intention to join any coalition and rejects possibly Israeli participation in the alliance after the Jewish state expressed interest in joining.

"Iraq will not be part of any coalition which aims to provide protection for Gulf navigation," Sahaaf told Rudaw English. "Iraq also refuses any Israeli participation in any coalition to protect Gulf navigation."

Sahaaf also said that the protection of the Persian Gulf is the "responsibility of the surrounding countries."

Iraq’s declaration of not joining the US-led coalition follows a call the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs received from its Iranian counterpart on Thursday, in which both sides agreed to maintain the security in the region and develop the positive relations between the two countries.

Iran yields considerable influence in Iraq. Iran is one of Iraq’s main energy providers, and Iraq has had to get exemptions from US sanctions on Iran to continue receiving energy from the Islamic Theocratic Republic.

Iran also backs the powerful Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, in Iraq. The militias, which were formed to fight ISIS
...embracing their inner Islamic Brute...
, now have some of their leaders in the Iraqi parliament. The head of the Fatih Coalition in the parliament and PMF leader Hadi al-Ameri fought with Iran in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, for example.

There were a series of attacks on oil vessels in the Persian Gulf in May and June this year, creating fears for the freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway of the Strait of Hormuz, prompting the US to start the coalition in August.

The situation prompted the US to start its maritime security coalition in the Gulf. So far, the UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE have joined. Saudi Arabia and the UAE joined shortly after Saturday;s attacks on the oil installations.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Yoots Yootin...
[AJC] They struck in a neighborhood just south of College Park. The scope of their violence didn't sink in, however. A day later, they were at it again just a few blocks away: There was another pizza order and another robbery, with Weaver again as gunman and young Cleveland punching a 29-year-old woman in the face before stealing her car.

Thankfully, the three budding criminals (only Weaver appears to have a blemish on his record before this) gave their scheme perhaps two minutes of planning and were almost immediately caught after the second robbery. They are now headed to Big Boy (and Big Girl) Prison after pleading guilty last week.

Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard, who’s been in that job for 23 years, says these crimes indicate increasing gang activity. He said there are about twice as many gangs in Atlanta as there were in 2007. The three teens featured in this column belonged to a street gang. (Incidentally, however, crime is down about a third in the past decade in Atlanta.)

Afghanistan
U.S. drone strike kills 30 pine nut farm workers in Afghanistan
JALALABAD, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike intended to hit an Islamic State (IS) hideout in Afghanistan killed at least 30 civilians resting after a day’s labor in the fields, officials said on Thursday.
Uh huh. Their weapons were a few feet away so they were "Civilians", huh, Herb?
The attack on Wednesday night also injured 40 people after accidentally targeting farmers and laborers who had just finished collecting pine nuts at mountainous Wazir Tangi in eastern Nangarhar province, three Afghan officials told Reuters.
“Hey, Abdulullah, I heard that if you tell the Americans they killed civilians, they’ll pay good money to apologize.”
“Ya know what, Omarullah, I heard the same thing. Let’s tell them they killed 13 civilians including three wimmin and a goat — we’ll be rich!”
“I have a better idea, Abdulullah: we’ll tell them it was thirty, including seventeen helpless wimmin, five kiddies, and 3 goats — we’ll be even richer!”

"The workers had lit a bonfire and were sitting together when a drone targeted them," tribal elder Malik Rahat Gul told Reuters by telephone from Wazir Tangi.
Any gathering of men is automatically assumed as a terrorist camp and is eligible for targeting. It's how they keep bombing wedding parties.
Haidar Khan, who owns the pine nut fields, said about 150 workers were there for harvesting, with some still missing as well as the confirmed dead and injured.

A survivor of the drone strike said about 200 laborers were sleeping in five tents pitched near the farm when the attack happened.

"Such mistakes cannot be justified. American forces must realize (they) will never win the war by killing innocent civilians," said Javed Mansur, a resident of Jalalabad city.
An ignorant, uneducated man, but he speaks the truth.
Scores of local men joined a protest against the attack on Thursday morning as they helped carry the victims’ bodies to Jalalabad city and then to the burial site.
We just created hundreds of new recruits for the jihadis.
They can’t afford to go a-jihading. They have families to support. Jihad is a young man’s game, if one aims to be a jacket wallah or cannon fodder, or one must be a trained professional with useful skills able to work one’s way up to a #2, #3, or #4.

Members of the Provincial Council said the number was 35 killed.

The strike took place in the Wazir Tangi area of the district, police officials said, "while farmers were harvesting peanuts."

#3  One does wonder how the war casualty numbers compare to normal Afghan-on-Afghan violence. These are a people known for shooting up everyone in the vicinity because someone looked at them the wrong way, after all. Not to mention tribal warfare; multi-generational feuds; kidnapping raids; warlords enforcing their lordship; gangsters justifying their targets paying for protection; takfiris enforcing religious compliance on the Hazeras, Buddhists (not that there are many of the latter left, poor things), and insufficiently pious Muslim neighbours; and various jihadi groups, mostly foreign, fighting against the local authorities and everyone else.

#4  Assuming there really were innocent civilians killed in a US drone strike, that would be a tragedy but it has happened before.

Compare Operation Freedom's Sentinel with previous conflicts, even with Operation Enduring Freedom. We have become better at reducing collateral damage but we are not close to reaching zero. No honest person should expect that we will reach it soon.

Interestingly, even some of the terrorist groups have been trying to reduce collateral damage (e.g., Hezbollah, AlQ) because of the bad feelings in the general population after such damage. On the other hand, Syrian Assad forces and ISIS don't seem worried about this.

Pompeo favours 'peaceful resolution' to crisis after Saudi attack
[DAWN] The US wants a peaceful solution to the crisis sparked by attacks on Saudi oil facilities, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday, after Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
raised the prospect of "all-out war".

Pompeo has blamed Iran for the dramatic weekend assault on two facilities, condemning an "act of war" which knocked out half the kingdom's oil production.

The rhetoric has raised the risk of an unpredictable escalation in a tinderbox region where Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Iran are locked in a decades-old struggle for dominance.

After meeting with allies in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, Pompeo said there was an "enormous consensus in the region" that Iran carried out the attacks, despite its denials.

But he said the US was intent on finding a way out of the confrontation.

"We'd like a peaceful resolution. I think we've demonstrated that," he told news hounds. "I hope the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran sees it the same way."

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif earlier warned any US or Saudi military strike on Iran could cause "all-out war".

"We don't want war, we don't want to engage in a military confrontation," he told CNN in an interview aired Thursday.

"But we won't blink to defend our territory."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Netanyahu urges rival Gantz to form unity government with him
[DAWN] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Thursday on his main rival, former general Benny Gantz, to join him in a broad, governing coalition after Israel's election ended with no clear winner.

A spokeswoman for Gantz, leader of the centrist Blue and White party, had no immediate response to the surprise offer from Netanyahu, head of the right-wing Likud party.

The change of strategy reflected Netanyahu's weakened position after he failed again in Tuesday's election, which followed an inconclusive ballot in April, to secure a parliamentary majority.

"During the election campaign, I called for the establishment of a right-wing government but to my regret, the election results show that this is impossible," Netanyahu said.

"Benny, we must set up a broad unity government, as soon as today. The nation expects us, both of us, to demonstrate responsibility and that we pursue cooperation."

On Wednesday, Gantz said he hoped for a "good, desirable unity government". But he has also ruled out forming one with a Netanyahu-led Likud, citing looming corruption charges against the prime minister. Netanyahu denies any wrongdoing.

All right-wing, religious parties finish signing pledge of allegiance to Netanyahu in effort to foil secular unity government

[IsraelTimes] The leaders of all the parties in the right-wing religious bloc have signed a document pledging to recommend Benjamin Netanyahu as the next prime minister and vowing to enter a coalition only as a single unit, as the premier called on Blue and White chief Benny Gantz to join a “unity government” that includes those parties.

Gantz during the election spoke of his interest in forming a “secular unity government” ostensibly void of the Haredi parties Shas and United Torah Judaism as well as the more hardline members of the Yamina party.

Pompeo downplays failure of US patriot missiles in Saudi Arabia
It really helps if you turn them on beforehand, guys. To be fair, the Syrians have the same problem with their S-300 system, a gift from their fraternal friends, the USSR Russia.
[ALMASDARNEWS] Missile defense systems all over the world sometimes fail to demonstrate the intended result, US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said, when asked by a news hound why Saudi troops, armed with US-made Patriot missile defense systems, failed to repel the recent drone attack on the kingdom’s oil facilities.

"We’ve seen air defense systems all around the world have mixed success," the Department of State press service quoted Pompeo as saying upon his arrival to Jeddah. "Some of the finest in the world don’t always pick things up. We want to work to make sure that infrastructure and resources are put in place such that attacks like this would be less successful than this one appears to have been."

The US top diplomat lashed at rumors that the attack on Saudi Aramco oil facilities was a result of US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program.

The facilities of the Saudi Aramco oil company in the east of Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. were attacked by ten drones in the early hours of September 14. In particular, the world’s biggest oil refinery near the city of Abqaiq and a refinery near Khurais, where Saudi’s second largest oil field is located, came under the attack. The attacks sparked fires at 13 facilities.

Yemen

...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
rebels from the Ansar Allah movement grabbed credit for the incident. Washington claimed that the Iranian government had played a role in the attack. Tehran strongly dismissed those accusations as baseless.

#1  The infamous last SCUD strike that took out a NG unit in the First Gulf War occurred when the Patriot battery was beyond its reset limit. The Patriot system was designed to take out aircraft not missiles but an initiative by someone in the Senate funded the program. It was basically the first mark 1 fielding of the system in the anti-missile role with software that hadn't been 'proofed'.

Like the Periwinkle Master said, doesn't help if you don't turn it on.

US continues to arm Syrian Kurds despite Turkey’s objections
[ALMASDARNEWS] The U.S. military is still arming the Syrian Kurds in northeastern Syria, despite the Ottoman Turkish regime’s objections and demands that they discontinue their support for the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Citing a U.S. defense official on Wednesday, the AFP News Agency reported that the American military was still providing weapons and military equipment to the Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria.

According to the AFP report, the weapons and military equipment are being supplied to the Syrian Democratic Forces so that they can continue their fight against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....

/ISIS/IS/ISIS).

"We continue to provide very tailored arms and vehicles to the SDF" for use against IS, said Chris Maier, the director of the working group on the fight against the jihadists at the Department of Defense.

"We’re very transparent about what those supplies are," Maier said, adding "We provide monthly to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund...
a report of what those arms and vehicles are."

Earlier this week, local sources in the al-Hasakah Governorate reported that a U.S. military convoy consisting of 150 supply vehicles entered the northeastern Syria city of al-Malikiyah.

These reports come just a week after the U.S. and Ottoman Turkish armed forces implemented a safe zone in northern Syria; they have already begun joint patrols.

#1  China is propping up Iran. This is supposed to improve Iran's oil infrastructure. Iran is one of the few countries that has sufficient internal oil field and refinery equipment manufacturing shops which means they do not have to worry about embargos on oil sector equipment manufactured outside of Iran. Sanctions on equipment has crippled Venezuela's oil production and refining capabilities but will not harm Iran.

Therefore, that oil sector revitalization revenue will go into the Iranian economy.

Another note, while most oil producing countries around the world have up to 60 years of oil reserves, Iran is the only one that has 100 years of oil reserves.

However, their currency valuation is like Venezuela's, extremely crippled.

US-backed SDC demands Syrian gov’t recognize their autonomy in northern Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian government recently sent a letter to the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Security-General criticizing the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as a "separatist terrorist militia" that is destabilizing the country.

The letter accused the Syrian Democratic Forces of working with the U.S. and Israel to undermine the government , while "committing crimes for the International Coalition against the Syrian people," accusing the SDF of now "kidnapping, torturing, killing and displacing civilians."

However,
alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk...
in response to the government’s letter, the co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (political wing of the SDF), Ilham Ahmed, told Asharq al-Awsat that Damascus’ accusations were baseless and false, adding that they are attempting to please The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
with these claims.

"This approach will not serve the political solution and the grinding of the peace processor‐threatening with wars and battles to impose control over the entirety of Syrian territory only prolongs the conflict," she said.

Ahmed said the Syrian Democratic Council is relentlessly working to reopen talks with Damascus in order to reach a political settlement.

The SDF co-chair also demanded that the Syrian government recognize the autonomous administration in northern and eastern Syria.

"We have consistently indicated through our statements, and we have repeatedly called on the Syrian government to begin engaging in a comprehensive political process to resolve the Syrian crisis, recognize the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria," the co-chair said.

Nearly half of the U.S.'s homeless people live in one state: California
h/t Instapundit
More than half a million people are homeless each night in the United States, a new White House report has found. And nearly half of them are concentrated in one state: California.

All told, 47% of all unsheltered homeless people nationwide ‐ meaning those who sleep in areas not meant for habitation, such as sidewalks, parks, cars and abandoned buildings, rather than in shelters ‐ live in the Golden State, according to a new report on homelessness from the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Unsheltered homeless people represent just over a third (35%) of the overall homeless population nationwide.

At the city level, four of the five cities with the highest rate of unsheltered homelessness are in California: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Rosa and San Jose. Seattle joins the California municipalities in the top five.

In recent weeks, reports have suggested that the Trump administration may stage a federal intervention in California to address homelessness in the state.

Malaysia, Indonesia shut thousands of schools over forest fires haze
[DAWN] Thousands of schools were shuttered across Malaysia and Indonesia on Thursday, affecting at least 1.7 million pupils, officials said, as toxic haze from rampant forest fires sent air quality plummeting.

Nearly 2,500 schools were ordered to shut their doors in Malaysia — including nearly 300 in the smog-hit capital Kuala Lumpur — over soaring health concerns sparked by toxic haze from out-of-control blazes in Indonesia's Sumatra and Borneo islands.

Indonesia said hundreds of schools in hard-hit Riau province on Sumatra would also be shut on Thursday, with 800 closed in one district alone, while about 1,300 were shut in its Central Kalimantan province on Borneo.

The closures affected at least 1.7 million students in Malaysia. It was not clear how many pupils were forced to stay home in neighbouring Indonesia.

Jakarta is deploying thousands of security forces and water-bombing aircraft to tackle the blazes, mostly started by illegal fires set to clear land for plantations.

The fires belch smog across Southeast Asia annually, but this year's are the worst since 2015 and have added to concerns about wildfire outbreaks worldwide exacerbating global warming.

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. Backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF), the Syrian Arab Army reportedly began the operation against ISIS in the Hamimah area east of Palmyra (var. Tadmur).

According to a military source in the area, the Syrian Arab Army and their allies engaged the enemy forces in the Hamimah area; this would result in a number of Islamic State hard boyz killed.

At the same time, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) carried out fresh Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s over this desert region, hitting several sites belonging to the Islamic State hard boyz in the area.

This location in the Badiya al-Sham region was specifically chosen because of the Islamic State’s recent attacks that killed and maimed several Syrian Arab Army soldiers.

The source said this new Syrian Army operation against the Islamic State will be limited to the Hamimah area, but it could expand if more terrorist pockets are found.

Saudi jets allegedly bombed Iranian forces in Syria
[ALMASDARNEWS] Warplanes of the Royal Saudi Air Forces took part in targeting pro-Iranian militia in eastern Syria, a western source told Independent Arabia.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Saudi jet fighters, among others, were spotted bombing facilities and locations of Iranian militia in Albukamal city along the Iraqi borders.

"The aerial bombardment has destroyed repositories, rocket launchers and UAV bases, which Soddy Arabia

Earlier, media reports spoke of unidentified drones hovering over Al Bukamal and nearby areas controlled by Iranian forces and its proxies in eastern Syria.

The same source confirmed that the international coalition against ISIS

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
a senior Saudi official denied all reports about his country’s involvement in launching Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s against Iranian forces in Syria.

On Wednesday, the Saudi Defence Ministry organized a news conference to show journalists what it describes as an Iranian cruise missile and Delta Wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

"The investigation has shown that the drone’s type is Delta Wing, and the information obtained by the ministry indicates the drone’s technology is Iranian," the department’s front man Col. Turki al-Maliki said.

"The attack was launched from the north and unquestionably sponsored by Iran," he told a news conference. "We are working to know the exact launch point," the official added.

On Tuesday, a US official cited by AFP has claimed that cruise missiles were used in Saturday’s attacks on Saudi oil facilities, and the attack came from Iran.

New reports of airstrikes on Syrian border city of Albukamal

[ALMASDARNEWS] Several reports released Thursday morning said that the Iranian-backed forces in the city of Albukamal were targeted by unknown drones on Wednesday.

According to the reports, the drones were flying low over Albukamal around 8 P.M. (local time), when they began bombing the forces inside the city.

Some claims allege it was the U.S. Armed Forces that carried out the strikes over Albukamal. In particular, the claims said U.S. drones flying out of the Tanf Base in southeastern Homs were behind this attack.

No casualties have been reported.

This latest attack marked the second time in the last 48 hours that there have been reports of Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
s over the city of Albukamal in the Deir Ezzor Governorate.

Albukamal is a city located along the Syrian-Iraqi border; it has been under the control of the Syrian Armed Forces since their successful rural Deir Ezzor offensive in 2017.

Once Albukamal and al-Mayadeen were captured, the Iranian military began moving their bases to these cities, which was in compliance with a request from the Russian Armed Forces to move operations from Daraa.

Oil prices edge up after turbulent week as Saudi Arabia reassures on output
[DAWN] Oil prices edged higher in Asian trade on Thursday after days of turbulence, with markets soothed by Saudi Arabia’s pledge to restore full production by end-September at facilities knocked out in drone and missile attacks last weekend.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 rose 24 cents to $63.84 a barrel by 0634 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude CLc1 was up 21 cents to $58.32 a barrel.

The steadying of nerves came after Saudi Arabia set out the timeline to resume full operations, and also said it had managed to restore supplies to customers at levels prior to the attacks by drawing from its oil inventories.

Brent prices had jumped 14.6% on Monday, the contract’s biggest one-day percentage gain since at least 1988.

Britain
Fury at al-Guardian's editorial on David Cameron's son
Disgusting. Surprised that the Guardian would publish such a thing. Having your child die is painful no matter one’s social standing.
[Standard] The Guardian newspaper has apologised for an editorial which said David Cameron had only felt "privileged pain" over the death of his disabled son.

In extracts of his autobiography, For The Record, the former prime minister praised the NHS care given to his son Ivan before he died in 2009 aged six.

But the newspaper faced a backlash after writing that he "might have understood the damage his policies have done" if he had sought care for a dying parent rather than a dying child.

Its editorial read: "Mr Cameron has known pain and failure in his life but it has always been limited failure and privileged pain."
Intersectionality at its very best, if you are privileged and your 6 year old son dies its privileged pain. Absolute moron and the fact that it was an editorial shows that people in the paper actually thought this was justified at first.
The Guardian removed the remarks and has now published an apology on its website. It said: "The original version of this editorial posted online fell far short of our standards. It has now been amended, and we apologise completely."
No one can hate as hard as The Guardian. It is not enough to disagree with someone. You must destroy them in every way.
A screenshot of the offending paragraph was shared on social media, including by Tory minister Zac Goldsmith.

He said: "These aren’t just the ugly thoughts of a maverick columnist. These are the words of the actual Guardian editorial. It is their corporate view."

Mr Goldsmith’s criticism was retweeted by the prime minister’s girlfriend Carrie Symonds. Ivan had cerebral palsy and a severe form of epilepsy.

Baltimore officials pitched on putting three surveillance planes in the sky at once, covering most of city
[BALTIMORESUN] The head of an aerial surveillance company is pitching Baltimore officials on flying not one but three camera-laden planes above the city simultaneously, covering most of the city and its violent crime, he said in emails obtained by The Baltimore Sun.

A pair of Texas donors have stepped forward to help fund three planes and extra police, 40 local analysts and oversight personnel if there is city buy-in, the records and interviews show. The effort aims to "demonstrate the effectiveness" of such an all-seeing surveillance system in fighting crime in the city.

The enlarged scope of the three-year, $6.6 million surveillance pitch was welcomed by supporters and denounced by detractors contacted by The Sun.

Ross McNutt of Ohio-based Persistent Surveillance Systems said in emails to officials in Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young’s office that most City Council members had expressed their support for the surveillance planes, though several council members denied it. No decision has been made.

Each plane would be capable of recording up to 32 square miles at a time, and each would fly 45 to 50 hours a week, McNutt said.

"With these three coverage areas, we would be able to cover areas that include 80 to 90 percent of the murders and shootings in Baltimore," McNutt wrote in an email last month to Sheryl Goldstein, Young’s deputy chief of staff.

[DAWN] Britannia's Supreme Court will hear a third and final day of legal arguments on Thursday over whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson
...pro-Brexit British prime minister, succeeding no-Brexit Theresa May. BoJo is noted as much for his sparkling personality and his hair as for his Conservative policies....
acted unlawfully when he suspended parliament in the run-up to Brexit.

If Johnson loses, he may be compelled to recall parliament earlier than scheduled, giving additional time for politicians to scrutinise and oppose his plans to lead Britannia out of the Europe

The court's ruling could come late on Thursday at the earliest, but is more likely to be delivered in the following days. The 11 justices have given no indication of how long they would take.

Before the suspension, Johnson suffered one defeat after another in parliament, where he has no majority. Most members of the House of Commons are opposed to a so-called "no-deal Brexit" scenario, predicting that it would cause economic damage and severe disruption, including to food and medicine supply chains.

Syrian air defenses intercept enemy drone over Damascus
[ALMASDARNEWS] A number of explosions were heard in the eastern suburbs of Damascus, prompting many to believe a new Israeli attack was taking place.

According to an Al-Masdar field correspondent, the Syrian air defenses were activated this evening when an ‘enemy’ aircraft was spotted over Damascus city.

The field correspondent said at least one enemy drone was shot down during the exchange over the eastern suburbs of Damascus.

He would add that the downing of the enemy drone occurred in the Aqraba area, which was the site of Israel’s last attack on rural Damascus.

#1  I predict, by the end of the day, this will become a "teaching moment" requiring mandatory sensitivity training for all Canadians

He's trying to be cute, but he's missing the point. As the Jordan Peterson affair shows, Canada now compels speech.

There won't be a "teaching moment"; there will be government compulsion.

This reality is what caused Peterson to step forth and stop being an obscure Canadian academic and be a champion for a simple but absolutely fundamental principle of democracy: except for oaths in extremely rare and tightly circumscribed formal situations, the state cannot compel any form of expression.

Libya's Tabu tribe rejects settlement offer by UAE on Murzuq massacre
[Libya Observer] The Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar reported that the Tabu rustics in Libya have rejected a financial offer from the UAE in exchange for closing the file of the aerial bombing of Murzuq town, which resulted in the killing of scores of civilians last August.

The UAE's offer, which was rejected by the Tabu, was part of a five-item agreement presented to them in Abu Dhabi, in the presence of Haftar's front man, Ahmed al-Mismari, according to the newspaper.

The agreement required the Tabu to recognize Haftar's leadership and to withdraw the international lawsuit filed for the investigation of the August massacre carried out by Haftar drones.

Tunisia's ousted president Ben Ali dies in Saudi exile: lawyer
[DAWN] Tunisia's ousted autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali died in exile in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
on Thursday, days after a free presidential election in his homeland, his family lawyer said.

"Ben Ali just died in Saudi Arabia," the lawyer, Mounir Ben Salha, told Rooters by phone.

Ben Ali fled Tunisia in January 2011 as his compatriots rose up against his oppressive rule in a revolution that inspired other Arab Spring uprisings abroad and led to a democratic transition at home.

On Sunday, Tunisians voted in an election that featured candidates from across the political spectrum, sending two political outsiders through to a second round vote unthinkable during Ben Ali's own era of power.

However,
the hip bone's connected to the leg bone...
while Tunisians have enjoyed a much smoother march to democracy than citizens of the other Arab states that also rose up in 2011, many of them are economically worse off than they were under Ben Ali.

While almost all the candidates in Sunday's election were vocal champions of the revolution, one of them, Abir Moussi, campaigned as a supporter of Ben Ali's ousted government, receiving 4 per cent of the votes.

A former security chief, Ben Ali had run Tunisia for 23 years, taking power when, as prime minister in 1987, he declared president-for-life Habib Bourguiba medically unfit to rule.
