#1 I heard, from friends son who served at checkpoints, that this happens regularly - they come to checkpoint, stop a few meters off and say "I have a knife". Thereby they are detained overnight, get 3 meals, and sent back.

I consider them useful data points, regardless of the outcome. Sort of like taking the temperature of a swamp to determine the how active the inhabitants are.
