#2 When I first heard the story of St. Maximilian Kolbe's sacrifice, I thought "Wow. He sacrificed his life so the other guy could live what - another week? Maybe a month?". Turns out that the man that St. Maximilian died for was present when St. Maximilian was canonized by St John Paul II.

Interesting forum, though. Perish the thought that the folks who took such excellent care of Poland's architecture and infrastructure might not have been equally gentle toward her people.

#7 Just to set the record straight, from the article: "Gajowniczek was a Polish political prisoner who had been arrested because he was aiding the Jewish resistance in Poland, although he was not a Jew himself."

Franciszek Gajowniczek was not a Jew. I am sure that St. Maximilian would have done the same for anyone who begged for mercy because of his family.
