#1  Iran builds a secret underground complex

You misspelled Tomb again....

Someday Spelinkers(sp?) will be exploring the 'Tombs of the Mad Mullahs...'

#4 ROFL, lotp - you guys are a scream. :-D

Question: If the "underground complex" is so secret, how is it in the news?

And haven't the MM™ ever heard of bunker busters?

Just sayin', 's all.

#5 The MM's are eerily reminiscent of the Human enclave in "Beneath the Planet of the Apes." To them, the Bomb is God and the Ayatollah is his Prophet.

Glory be to the Bomb and to the Holy Fallout. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world with out end. Amen...

My dear everlasting bomb come down among us, to make heaven under earth like the hour of darkness. Oh instrument of god. Grant us thy truth. The truth to define in us. Feel that truth and through that flicker...

Let everyone go to his private shelter. Empty the streets. There to find the city of the dead. Let the blessing of the Bomb Almighty and the fellowship of the Holy Fallout descend on us all, this day and forever more...

#8 Most likely the important parts of these underground complexes are under significant mosques, holy sites, hospitals, etc. The expectation is that the West will at least hesitate before destroying such sites, and quite possibly forego attacking them at all. They are probably correct.

#9 Nope! 3 years ago I would agree. Now all the mosque's are to our pilots is a visual reference point. I've been ranting for the last 26 years we need to nuke these idiots. My fear, Glenmore, is the US will wait until they strike first with a WMD before any action is taken.

#11 "The opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) learnt about the complex from its contacts within the regime."

Condider the source!

The United States, which lists National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) as a terrorist organization, closed the NCRI's Washington office in 2003.

In 1986, to bring opposition to the Iranian regime under one umbrella group, the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI) formed the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). The Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK ) is the military wing of the NCRI.

The MEK was funded and assisted the Hussein regime in suppressing opposition within Iraq, and performed internal security for the Iraqi regime. In the early 1970s, MEK members killed several U.S. soldiers and civilians working on defense projects in Iran. They are also responsible for numerous terrorist attacks on western civilian construction projects. MEK members also were involved with the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Maryam Rajavi, MEK’s principal leader and her husband, Massoud Rajavi are often referred to as “Cult leaders”.

#12 Don't we have a bomb that penetrates the earth a bit then spills 2 chemicals together which produce millions of cubic meters of chloroform ?
Chloroform is an invisable fluid which flows down hill like water. One breath, fast death. Hiding underground is not smart, but then again, if they were smart, why would they embrace Islam ?

#13 The mosques will become target coordinates (Lat-Long) for the bunker busters. We have tried to be PC and respectful of mosques in our war actions. The enemy has not. They have used the mosques for ammon dumps, armories, observation posts, and sniping points. There will be a tipping point, just like Sammy put civilians on top of his C&C bunkers. When we work out the terrible equations of war, we are going to have to go through the mosques, baby milk factories, orphanages, baby duck petting zoos, ad nausium to get to the source of the evil. The M²s will eventually force us to by their actions. The longer we wait, the more horrendous it will become.

Frank G is right. Taking out the The M²s and their personal assets will send a message to these cowards. They will sing a different tune, just like G'Daffy did in 1986 when we attacked him with F-111s.

#17 If we really had a viable space program, we'd have the capability of going out to the asteroid belt, selecting one rather dense, half-mile diameter rock, and dropping it on Qom at about 55M/S. The resulting release of energy would destroy most if not all of Iran's above-ground structures, and collapse 2/3 to 3/4 of any underground structures. It would have the secondary effect of releasing any pressure on any fault line within 1500-2000 miles, and put the fear of whatever into anybody and everybody. A second one on Riyadh would have the effect of totally decapitating any Wahabbi manipulations forever. Sure, lots of people would die, but I doubt the numbers will reach the point they would exceed the numbers that are dying anyway while "the Religion of Peace" massacres people around the world. Of course, San Francisco might seceed from the United States, but that would only legitimize what is already taking place. I doubt many others would complain - at least, not openly.

Knowing my Muslims, the bunker is either under Teheran's principal hospital, or largest school complex.

In the course of such a strike you'd kill more than 100 million people throughout the region and downrange through secondary effects. The resultant earthquake/shockwave alone would be felt in this country on the other side of the world as air happens to be an excellent transmitter of pressure waves.

What would happen to the oil fields in the region is beyond comprehension. Essentially - they're all gone. Oil fields, terminals, refineries, any shipping in the gulf at the time of the strike (and possibly in the Arabian Sea and beyond) - all gone.

Devastation would be massive, unprecendented, and ghastly. Even Israel would feel the effects for a loooonnnngggg time.

You would likely plunge the world into a years-long decrease in temperatures as the dust blown into the upper atmosphere dissipated (remember - you're talking about a kilometer wide dense, so likely nickle-iron, chunk of rock travelling at a significant velocity when it impacts (and it will impact - not explode in the upper atmosphere) - when it impacts, it has the energy to blow a significantly larger portion of whathever it strikes into the atmosphere as well, will liberate all of its energy, and will transfer that energy into the ground and atmosphere at the target point - that then radiates outwards very quickly). The US and the rest of the world would suffer, evetually, almost as much as the Middle East would.

As much as I dislike the Moslem culture and the idiocy of the "religion of peace", dropping a kilometer wide rock (roughly 1/2-mile as cited above) on them is like killing the patient to cure the disease.

Thanks,
Greg

#23 FYI:

Atmospheric Entry:

The projectile begins to breakup at an altitude of 7220 meters = 23700 ft
The projectile reaches the ground in a broken condition. The mass of projectile strikes the surface at velocity 11 km/s = 6.82 miles/s
The impact energy is 2.52 x 1020 Joules = 6.03 x 104MegaTons.
The broken projectile fragments strike the ground in an ellipse of dimension 1.43 km by 1.01 km

Major Global Changes:

he Earth is not strongly disturbed by the impact and loses negligible mass.
The impact does not make a noticeable change in the Earth's rotation period or the tilt of its axis.
The impact does not shift the Earth's orbit noticeably.

Crater Dimensions:

Crater shape is normal in spite of atmospheric crushing; fragments are not significantly dispersed.

Transient Crater Diameter: 12.1 km = 7.52 miles
Transient Crater Depth: 4.28 km = 2.66 miles

Final Crater Diameter: 16.8 km = 10.5 miles
Final Crater Depth: 0.692 km = 0.43 miles

The crater formed is a complex crater.
At this impact velocity ( < 12 km/s), little shock melting of the target occurs.

Thermal Radiation:

At this impact velocity ( < 15 km/s), little vaporization occurs; no fireball is created, therefore, there is no thermal radiation damage.

Seismic:

At a range of 1200 km from impact of a 1-km (0.6 mi.) diameter asteroid, you can expect the following (minimum impact velocity BTW is 11 km/sec),

The major seismic shaking will arrive at approximately 240 seconds.
Richter Scale Magnitude: 7.8
Mercalli Scale Intensity at a distance of 1200 km:

I. Not felt except by a very few under especially favorable conditions.

II. Felt only by a few persons at rest, especially on upper floors of buildings.

Ejecta:

The ejecta will arrive approximately 551 seconds after the impact.
At your position there is a fine dusting of ejecta with occasional larger fragments
Average Ejecta Thickness: 111 micrometers = 4.37 1/1000 of an inch
Mean Fragment Diameter: 149 micrometers = 5.87 1/1000 of an inch

Air Blast:

The air blast will arrive at approximately 3640 seconds.
Peak Overpressure: 2030 Pa = 0.0203 bars = 0.288 psi
Max wind velocity: 4.73 m/s = 10.6 mph
Sound Intensity: 66 dB (Loud as heavy traffic)

Remember, all of this (except the cratering) is what you'd experience 1200 km away from the target (Qom).

Thanks,
Greg

#26 Favorably?

Actually, the size of the asteroid being discussed and its' impact velocity is similar for the amount of debris a typical major volcanic eruption blows into the atmosphere. The asteroid and the volcano both have massive energy and delivers that energy almost directly into its target (the whole planet for the asteroid and the upper atmosphere for the volcano).

Volcanoes blow a considerable amount of energy into the atmosphere, but their blast footprints are considerably different from what an asteroid would have.

The asteroid has to blow through several tens of km of atmosphere before it strikes the earth. All that energy goes directly into the target. There are orders of magnitude difference between a volcanic explosion and an asteroid hit is quite different (hundreds of megatons of energy compared to thousands or millions for asteroid hits).

Look at the data. St. Helens blew what, about 3-9cu km of rock into the atmosphere? An asteroid hit does the same, roughly, but transfers a far greater amount of energy into the atmopshere and the shock wave as it's coming in.

Thanks,
Greg
