#1 The shooter, identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, of California, died hours after being admitted to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said. They had no motive for the shooting.

#4 If, say, 5,000 suicide bombers in a row are invariably Islamic fundamentalists well, OK, weve got a problem with the belief system, not just with the individuals. Yet I dont see a pattern in these going postal violent outbursts which seem to happen perhaps three or four times per year, every year, no matter whos in power or whos president: it seems that the philosophy (if you can even call it that) of each of the attackers is unique, idiosyncratic and just plain illogical. Even so, if he starts shooting or killing when a Republican is president, he is deemed a left-wing psycho (see: Charles Manson); if he starts shooting or killing when a Democrat is president, he is deemed a right-wing psycho (see: Joseph Stack). Excellent point. The Daily Beast's headline was 'Was the Pentagon Shooter a Wingnut?', posted with a pic of Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.
It is human nature to blame someone else,& not just paranoid people do it. I am not excusing bad behavior, just explaining it, btw. Scapegoating of those in power goes with the turf--maybe why all the Dems are dropping out? I wouldn't want to be a Congresscritter that passes this health care bill.

#5 Lots more from Ay Pee:

The gunman is now dead, of head wounds. The two Pentagon police officers received one each superficial wounds to the thigh and shoulder.

He apparently took the sight-seeing route from California to DC, leaving his car in a DC parking garage along with some ammunition. He was carrying two 9 millimeter semiautomatic weapons and "many magazines" of ammunition.

Apparently he had garnered police attention several times in the past, despite being well-educated and having a comfortably middle class background. He has a LinkedIn page that connects to some of his rants.

Credit where due: the AP reporters did a good job on this one.

#9 there is actually a high statistical correlation between high intelligence and some classes of psychosis. something like %70 of schizophrenics have an IQ more than 2 std deviations above the mean. (stat from old memory area... YMMV)

More Ay Pee -- his parents say he's bipolar, and four times spent time in in-patient mental institutions. To their credit, the parents did report to the local sheriff that he had a gun and might be on his way to do something dangerous.

AP is not claiming he's a right-wing nutjob.
