The current narrative isn't simply that we exploited them while we were there, it's also that we impoverished them for eternity before leaving. In their world view, the bottom line is that Western colonial policies were uniquely destructive in ways that no African conqueror had ever been or could ever be. Why do so many hold these beliefs? Because the alternative explanation involves culprits who stare them in the mirror every single day.
