#2 Tax day is only bad news for the "wealthy and well connected". Everyone else [50+/- percent] gets a free check in the mail.

#3 If it was a tax terrorism, the perp would not be bombing the Boston Marathon. Jeeze Louise.

#5 Paul, the thing is, I can't think of anyone who has a serious hate on for marathoners. It's even kind of odd for a jihadist attack. You would have thought they'd have timed it for the front-runners if they were going for a classic terrorist attack. Also, it isn't exactly a symbol of America or anything like that. Also, somebody would have claimed responsibility by now if it was an organized terror group.

It doesn't seem right for bigots - the Boston Marathon is pretty solidly "Stuff White People Like", and you'd think they'd attack a more... ethnic sporting event. And again, somebody would have claimed responsibility by now.

The event has little to do with government, tax or otherwise.

The marathon has little to do with any of the hot-button issues of the day. Unless you count the awkwardness of the Sandy-NYC Marathon conflict last fall. And somehow I can't see a pissed-off Staten Islander bombing another city over what was an unpleasant but passing slight five months afterwards.

This is feeling more and more like your classic mad bomber. Which suggests to me that he may strike again. What's the next big event in the Northeast?

#6 Mitch, the Marathon is perfect for a terrorist bombing. Potential high body count, easy to plant multiple bombs without people noticing, lots of locations that will serve as bomb points, and responders strung out all along a 26 mile route.

Why aim at front runners? Someone pointed out yesterday that there's a BIG clump of finishers right around the 4 hour mark of a good marathon. You could set the bombs off then and be sure of quite a reaction, and it would be even more unexpected -- hence the 'terror' part of terrorism.

Oh, and Axelrod is an asshole. But we all know that.

#7 I was thinking about the timing. Your front runners would be the professionals with a number of internationals especially at a big'un like Boston. At this point, would it not be mostly US citizens? The aspiring pros, those who peaked but love it, charity runners?

"It was tax day...he was too busy counting the money and sipping champaign at the 19th hole. In fact, by the time he realized this would kick off both Korea and Kermit, he had already had someone write a sea chanty for him"

#8 Think about it: a terrorist does not have to have a specific target, but he terrorizes the population to disrupt a society and to spread fear. Think of the assets that had to be mobilized to respond to this. Think of all the other cities that felt that they had to step up vigilance and security to deal with the perceived threats.

All over a few pots of ball bearings fashioned into an explosive device. Where will the next one strike, sez the public? Let one's imagination run wild. The potential victims bring fear to the table.

One nutcase has a lot of leverage.

#9 Tax day, but also the day of the marathon. So if you want to bomb the marathon, then tax day is a coincidence--not a reason.

#10 So far, it's simply a Rorschach picture for people to project their psyches/bias on.
