#1 In the thirty or so years that I have been following EU affairs or is it nearer 35 years now since I studied in French literature in Paris, and German philosophy in Mainz I have never seen ties between Europes two great land states reduced so low.

#2 The only time German-French relations were REALLY excellent was when Helmut Schmidt and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing held power.

Chirac-Schröder was just because the both wanted to piss off the U.S.
Sarkozy-Merkel? Meh

Hollande is certainly worse because he's incompetent. And a Socialist., although that's redundant.

#4 It's kinda funny that Mitterand forced the Euro onto Kohl, and now the socialists are reaping the results.

You'll hear denials after denials but Germany does have a plan B should (or rather when) the Euro fail.
