#4 Many Europeans did. According to wiki, nearly 1/5 citizens of Philidelphia were Indentured Servants prior to the Revolutionary War, and a tidbit about how Indentured Servants were treated worse than slaves, as they were short term investments vs. long term investments. I would hazard to guess that the release of an intured servant could also potentially create an economic competitor as the skills gained would be directly from the (former) master's trade.

#5 For an example of labor as short term investment, it's hard to beat the Irishmen who dug the New Basin Canal. Not that that'll be news to many here.
