#1 When 'all beef' guts, skin and tendons went to $7.65/lb for burger, this guy switched to pork steaks @$3.86/lb. Fresh free range, grass fed, unmedicated (wild) pork is less than that.

#2 I saw some serious slabs of pork tenderloin at the supermarket for about $3.50 / lb today; by way of comparison, freaking beef ribs that were half bone ran $4.95 / lb. I'll be cooking much more pork myself starting next week.

#6 OK, I give up. I had a cogent point to make about pork historically being favored in the US until after the Civil War, when cheap beef became available ...

#11 Why Is Beef So Expensive This Year?

"Cattle need considerable amounts of space, food, and, perhaps most importantly, water—both to drink, and to grow all the food they eat. And, with the drought settling in for the long haul over the West, that water is getting harder and harder for U.S. ranchers to come by."

#12 Deer farms sound like they could be a moderately good idea. Most white-tailed deer mate in their second year, though some females occasionally mate as young as seven months. Mating occurs between October and December and females are pregnant for 6 and 1/2 months. In her first pregnancy, a female will usually only have one fawn, but after that she may give birth to 2 or 3. Fawns are able to walk at birth. They are nursed several times a day until they are 8 weeks old, after which they begin to add vegetation to their diet. Fawns are weaned by 10 weeks old. A mature deer weighs about 100 to 150 pounds.

I think that would make them breed at about the same rate as sheep, but easier to feed, since they eat wood, and a bit bigger. But they don't produce wool.

#15 We had a drought in the west a couple of years ago. Hay prices soared and herds were culled. The resulting rise in the price of beef was predicted. It will subside over time as herds are replenished.

#16 Wetness in California is tied to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). When sea surface temperatures are anomalously cool in the interior North Pacific and warm along the Pacific Coast, and when sea level pressures are below average over the North Pacific, the PDO has a positive value. Positive PDO means wet in the southwest U.S. and northern Mexico. Negative PDO is tied to some of the worse droughts in California.

The PDO has switched back to positive values after a long negative spell so we shall see.

#17 Sven, is there any way we can blame this on global warming? Or Bush. That's almost as good.
Posted by Rambler in Virginia  2015-10-06 15:10||   2015-10-06 15:10|| Front Page Top

#18 Naw, the PDO and its sibling the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) are just facts.

One of the false assumptions underlying the claim of man-made global warming is that the climate would be stable if only man wasn't around. What a bunch of bunk. The climate changes. There is no such thing as a geostasis.

In 2,000 years the current interglacial will end and it will be back to ice age. Maybe scientist can bring back the Woolly Mammoth by then.

#21 I once had a friend who's wife was a vegetarian. Having the social graces of a bear, I proceeded to explain my belief in the philosophy of the social contract and therefore that eating meat was much more virtuous then eating vegetables.
She looked puzzled so I explained that the prohibition against murdering each other was due to a social contract. You respect my life and therefore I respect yours. (BTW, this is the justification for capital punishment). Every animal has killed something else in order to stay alive therefore my steak has forfeited its right to protection under the social contract.

Vegetables on the other hand take CO2 from the air and water and minerals from the earth and mix it with sunlight to live. They are the most virtuous creatures on earth and therefore we have to right to eat them.

My friend pulled me aside and asked me to stop pulling her leg or soon she wouldn't eat anything at all.
