#1 Update#3: I agree with this Business Insider analysis .... Russia is already exacting its revenge on Turkey for downing a Russian warplane (Natasha Bertrand, Business Insider). The one thing that I would add is Russian support for Kurdish groups .... do not be surprised in the next few weeks/months we hear reports of Kurdish forces having money, new and better weapons, good communications equipment, and excellent intelligence.

Something to monitor in the days ahead.

#11 I would expect the Bosporus to be closed to Russian shipping in the next few days. While it might hurt Russian commercial shipping, I doubt it will do much for Russian military forces, which can come from Kaliningrad, St. Petersburg, and the Kona Peninsula ports. If Turkey does manage to stop Russian imports, we might see more shipping through other European nations, bypassing Turkey and the Black Sea completely.

#12 OP, I thought there was a treaty that guarantees Russia free transit of the Bosporous. It includes warships. If Turkey closes it, it would probably be a causus belli.

Does NATO Article 5 apply if Turkey starts it and Russia retaliates?

#13 I believe the Treaty of Whatever gives Turkey the right to close the straits in time of war or whenever they feel like it. (I'm paraphrasing)

If the Turks do close the Bosporus, I'd call that a bold move for a one-eyed Ottoman. It would stay closed right up until the Russians need to move something thru it. Remember that business in the Crim? That was over the mere intimation the Russians might lose access.

Does NATO Article 5 apply if Turkey starts it and Russia retaliates?

#15 Bosporus only important to re supply Latakia in a smolder war. In the big shit the Black Sea Fleet is DOA and not much of a factor. The Turkd
S suck dead bunnies, but I would expect them to hold most of Anatolia proper and perhaps more along the Syrian and Bulgar border zones.

The Russ have never let their lines of communication run thru the Bosforus.
