#6 "thing about their flag" from what I've read about IS/Daesh, the very crude calligraphy used on their flag was done deliberately and is part of their recruiting campaign to emphasize the Caliphate's down-to-earth approach to JIHAD.
Many other Islamic nations have the equivalent on their flags, but done with excellent calligraphy.

#8 The outcry appeared to reflect anxiety and distrust of Muslims among some Americans An editorial comment by the news writer to emphasize that any American objecting to what happened is racis, Islamaphobic, mentally ill, backward, etc. I see the outcry as an explosive reaction from parents who, however dimly, see this as pushing the goodness / graciousness of Islam on their children in a crude attempt at brainwashing and as a attack on American traditions and culture. The only way the teacher/propagandist could have made that goal more obvious would be to have the students practice calligraphy for the Arabic and Farsi slogans of "Death to America".
By the way "almawt li'amrika" is on the Houthi flag in Yemen, in Arabic of course.
