#6 IIRC, UAVs always have a higher crash rate than manned aircraft. It is expected. It is built into the system operational design. Single string systems with lots of possible point failures.

From the article, it sounds like they were caught out on this lack of system redundancy to get the apparent airframe unit cost down.

Then all it takes is a bad batch of , say motor generators to get thru QA/QC, and the wapo has this month's gloom & doom, They-Are-Wasting-Dollars-on-Defense Wimmins-and-Chilluns-Hardest-hit liberal cry fest.

#8 Without pilots on board, the requirement for redundant systems go away with cost savings. Now they have a $14 million dollar aircraft with no back up electrical system. Smart move air force....

#12 The MQ-1 and MQ-9 have well over 2,000,000 flying hours, approximately 90% in combat. Overall loss rates are comparable to most other military aircraft. Like most WP articles, this is old news and not particularly relevant to ongoing operations.
