#5 The insanity plea existed before 'modern' psychiatry. The juries could look and see something wasn't right. It took lawyers (and those in robes) to make stuff up to justify why families and the people couldn't seek justice.

#7 Throughout this case’s proceedings, Nolen’s professed adherence to Islam have come up numerous times. However, Robert Hunt, a professor at Perkins School of Theology at SMU, said comments Nolen made are outside of the “norm” for Islam.

“Based on court transcripts, Nolen doesn’t show that he understands crime, sin and punishment in the Quran,” Hunt said. “Throughout the proceedings, he has never offered a justification for what he did, which is not something Muslims teach.”

#9 The reason that memorizing the Koran is a big deal is because most Muslims have not done so. And given that all it takes to convert to Islam is to repeat the key statement a few times in front of witnesses, it's not surprising that any given Muslim lacks a scholar's knowledge of the faith.
